Partying in a way only a mother can POLL YESTERDAY’S The most entertaining island I have ever been to is Mykonos, Greece. My bestie, Annie, and I had a blast there, footloose and fancy free four wheeling around the island. We danced the day and night away on the white sandy beach and shopped till we dropped.

Our next destination would have been Ibiza, Spain but that may never come to fruition.

This is because of being married with children and Annie is in a serious relationship.

Needless to say the bucket list has changed, unless both of us outlive our significant others and we hit the scene as old ladies with huge hats.

I certainly am not going to complain however. So far the second-most entertaining city I have ever been to is Las Vegas, with Nashville, Tennessee, third.

My pocketbook may tell another story, but I have been lucky enough to travel the world and back several times.

The world has been my playground and I have treasured every moment. I have learned so much. After a while, the world seems so small. Basic human needs are the same all over the world, and funny enough, money doesn’t even make the top five. I put love, truth, faith, health and fun among the most sought-after.

Last weekend, my husband, some friends and I decided to go to the ultimate party destination ... Las Vegas! Quickly, I realized I didn’t want to party like an animal because I am a couple days shy of being 37, and I am a mother. A mother that just wanted to sleep and lounge. Plus, occasionally, my nerves started to get the best of me. Wondering what Hannah Jo was doing. Being aware of the distance between us and not being able to hug her.

Sin City is certainly an adult playground, which is why I didn’t bring my daughter. The first night I was having a little anxiety about leaving her. I was reassured when Grandma used Face Time to contact me. My daughter’s smile lit up the screen.

Then I even felt a little guilty that I was trying to be footloose and fancy-free like I was before I had kids.

My husband urged me to stop evaluating the vacation. Vegas is not a kids playground.

Frankly, there is little to nothing for them to do. I would have felt more shame if I went to Munich, Germany, or Wisconsin Dells that is reasonably priced.

Now don’t get me wrong; it wasn’t a snoozefest We warmed our bones at the pool, visited the Hoover Dam and danced the night away at Cirque du Soleil’s “One” show.

Eventually, I got with the program. I realized that my holidays are going to be vastly different. My values have changed, and frankly, I like partying like a mother.

Sure, my before-kids days were a blast.

However, nothing beats playtime with my daughter and the love that I have for her.

ON THE COVER CRIME STOPPERS Police seek information about car burglaries in Sycamore

SYCAMORE – Sycamore police are investigating a series of car burglaries that happened at an impound lot and are seeking the public’s help.

Numerous vehicles were burglarized while parked inside the fenced impound lot in the 500 block of East Sycamore St. between midnight and 1 a.m. July 23, according to a news release from DeKalb County Crime Stoppers. Investigators believe more than one person committed the burglaries.

DeKalb police are also seeking information about a car burglary Aug. 27 at Suburban Apartments. The burglary happened between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day. Items stolen include a speaker box with two Kenwood subwoofer speakers, an amplifier and capacitor.

Anyone with information is asked to contact DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 8015-895-3272 or crimestoppers@dekalbcounty.org. Tipsters can remain anonymous and might be eligible for a cash reward of as much as $1,000.

Local groups work to cut back-to-school shopping costs

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – As summer winds down, DeKalb County workers are offering ways to cut the cost of back-to-school shopping and provide local students with a healthy start to the new school year.

Already, DeKalb County Health Department solid waste specialist Michelle Gibson has helped give away 50 backpacks and entire wardrobes of free clothing for families looking to save money. With shoppers expecting to spend about $700 on back-to-school needs alone, DeKalb County has more systems in place to ease the cost of the new school year for families.

“When you look at the cost of going back to school, if you were to go to, say, a walk-in clinic – to do your physicals there you may pay $30 or $40 as a copay per kid,” Gibson said. “Here, there’s no copay being charged. It’s just billed to the insurance.”

From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, families can stop by the DeKalb County Health Campus, 2550 N. Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb, for school and sports physicals and immunizations. Patients should call 815-748-2460 to make an appointment. The health department also will try to accommodate walk-ins.

Medical cards (Meridian, Harmony and Illinois Health Connect) and most private insurance will be accepted. Onsite dental services also will be available.

Back-to-school spending this year is expected to reach $75.8 billion nationwide, according to National Retail Federation projections. Shoppers are approaching the school year with plans to stock up on goods, rather than just buying enough items to get them through the first part of the year.

Back-to-school spending per family also is expected to increase, with shoppers expecting to spend $674 compared with $630 last year, according to a retail federation survey. Shoppers will spend most of that money on clothes and electronics. Parents said they will spend an average of $235 on clothing, $204 on electronics, $126 on shoes and $108 on school supplies.

To help ease some of those costs, retailer Target donated new infant and kids clothing to the health department as free items for the Shoe Share distribution Aug. 4. Families were allotted a pair of shoes and five clothing items per child.

A collaboration of community organizations, including the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in DeKalb,

will host a Back to School Bash from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 20 in DeKalb’s Welsh Park. Last year, volunteers gave away 600 backpacks to the more than 100 families who attended, coordinator Treveda Redmond said.

Organizers currently are asking for school supplies including: notebooks, folders, glue sticks, crayons, pencils and more to fill 1,000 backpacks. They also are accepting food, paper products for the giveaway event and monetary donations.

The event will feature live music, food, haircuts and games for children.

A shuttle bus will run to the park from Littlejohn Elementary School, Huntley Middle School and DeKalb High School from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day.

DeKalb teachers union to file intent to strike

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – With a new school year scheduled to begin in 13 days, the DeKalb School District 428 Board and teachers union are making last-ditch efforts to reach an agreement and avoid a strike.

However, officials with the union representing the district’s 430 teachers and other professionals plan to file necessary paperwork that would allow them to go on strike before classes start, said T.J. Fontana of the DeKalb Classroom Teachers’ Association.

“We continue to use our negotiating time to put forth creative solutions that will bring us closer to a deal that is fair to our community, our teachers and our students,” Fontana said.

Fontana said that on Friday, a 10day notice to strike will be filed.

If negotiations set for Friday, and three sessions planned for next week, don’t yield a deal, there’s a chance teachers could be on the picket line before the first bell of the new school year.

District 428 officials said Wednesday that they didn’t know about the union’s plans. State law requires union representatives to provide a copy of the intent-to-strike notice to the district, the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board, and the Regional Superintendent of Schools.

“We weren’t aware of it until it hit the media,” said Jim Bormann, head of human resources for the district. “But it’s the process. I expected it, because it is the process. What they’re doing is just meeting their statutory obligation.

It doesn’t mean that they have to go out on strike.”

Contract negotiations between the district and the union began earlier this year and have yet to yield an agreement. Tensions have increased in the past two weeks as the two sides have released statements blasting the other’s contract offers.

Earlier this week, another milestone on the path to a work stoppage was passed: The Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board on Tuesday posted both sides’ “final offer” after at least 12 negotiation and mediation sessions. Under state law, the offer information must be posted for 14 days before a work stoppage.

The offer postings revealed more context and detail than either side has offered so far. Fontana and Bormann said other offers have been made since the filings – but they declined to provide any details.

“The [salary] system proposed adequately and fairly compensates teachers at the beginning of their careers, while also rewarding longevity and encouraging teachers to remain in the district,” union officials said in the filing about keeping the current salary structure.

The union proposal in the filing could mean teacher salary increases of 4.29 percent for the 2016-17 school year; a 1.05 percent increase in the 2017-18 school year; and 3.29 percent raise the 2018-19 year.

Allen F. Burdick, 76, of Libby, Montana, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, at Libby Care Center.

Born July 23, 1940, in DeKalb, the son of Roy and Emma (Hess ) Burdick, Allen married Peggy Barnes.

Allen was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne.

He was employed by the DeKalb County Highway Department retiring in 2002 and moving to Libby, Montana, in 2003.

He is survived by his children, Beth Gahlbeck and Steven Burdick; grandchildren, Miriah, Robert, Thomas, Vanessa, Aryelle, Calice and Devan; 15 great-grandchildren who will miss their popop; and uncle, Frank “Pike” Burdick.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; daughter, Lissa; brother, Francis; sister, Joyce; and his parents.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with the Rev. Robert Vaughn of the Malta Congregational Church officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb, with full military honors

by DeKalb American Legion, AmVets and VFW Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services, Saturday, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.

He was born March 31, 1947, in Blue Island, the son of Lionel and Florence (Callahan) Eubanks.

He was a 1965 graduate of Tinley Park High School, was an Army veteran and enjoyed fishing and following NASCAR. He married Diane Haack on Sept. 28, 1968, in Oak Forest.

He retired in 2014, after 50 years of employment, from Panduit Corp.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; daughters, Cynthia Eubanks of Davis Junction, and Teresa Eubanks of Byron; grandson, Abram Craig Eubanks of Byron; and sisters, Pamela Kormiak of Mokena and Tamara Trock of Crete.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Christian funeral Mass will be held Monday Aug. 15, 2016, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation from 9:30 a.m. until Mass time, in St. Mary Catholic Church, 220 E. 2nd St., Byron with the Rev. Howard Barch officiating.

Sycamore predicts slightly higher enrollment soon D-427 to re-hire some staff; superintendent says no new staffing positions planned

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – With enrollment expected to increase at Sycamore School District 427 this school year, officials are planning to re-hire some employees who were laid off in the spring, Superintendent Kathy Countryman said.

Countryman said the district will re-hire some of the 21 full-time and 12 part-time employees laid off in the spring to fill vacancies, but said no new positions will be added.

“This is super unofficial ... right now, we’re looking to be up a little bit,” she said.

Projections show district enroll-

ment growing from 3,735 students at the end of fiscal 2016 to 3,763.

The increase of 28 students didn’t include preschool enrollment, and is considered unofficial until the sixth day of school, Countryman said.

The superintendent also went over staffing plans for the new year.

“When we are able to recall people, it’s not because we’re adding positions,” she said. “We are staying tight with our budget deficit reduction plan.”

She said the district was able to call back some of the employees who got reduction-in-force notices.

“We’re really happy to invite them back to join us,” Countryman said.

“Of course some people have taken jobs in other places – that was to be expected – but we have been able to invite some people back based on vacancies created by openings.”

The layoffs were part of a $3.8 million budget reduction plan approved in 2015. The reductions came after several years of deficit spending, in which the district used reserves to cover shortfalls.

The arms and back of this chair are made from carefully placed cow horns creating a Victorian chair. It sold for $1,400 a few years ago and would sell for less today.. on the bottom is “NR-208, Sep. 6, 1919” and “(c) 1979 S.E.P.” Can you tell me anything about it and what its value is?

A: Your figurine is called “Lazybones” and is a miniature reproduction of a reproduction. It was made by Dave Grossman Designs Inc., a company that sold limited-edition figurines, snow globes, ornaments and other memorabilia based on movie, television and book characters from the 1970s to the 1990s. The company introduced the “Norman Rockwell, The Saturday Evening Post Cover Collection” for the magazine in 1973. The bigger porcelain Lazybones figurine, NR-08 from 1973, pictured Rockwell’s cover illustration from Sept. 6, 1919. Your two- by three-inch figurine is a miniature version of that one, made in 1979. Hence the markings on your figurine. Collector figurines and plates made in limited numbers were a huge collecting niche in the 1970s and ‘80s. It was a new idea that became a fad and most of the pieces are now worth less than half their original “issue” prices.

Animal horns have been used to make furniture for centuries. Chairs, chandeliers and storage racks made in the 15th century exist in some museums. But the popularity of antlers and horns for chairs came about in the 19th century. At first they were made for hunting lodges and castles for nobility, but almost all of the furniture is now known only through pictures and reports. In 1851, chairs, chests of drawers and even a sofa made of horns were exhibited at the London World Exhibition. The Tobey furniture Co. of Chicago displayed the first American horn furniture at the 1876 Exposition. The idea lost favor by 1920. Around 1990, the horn chairs were rediscovered by Western collectors.

The most famous horn-furniture maker in the U.S., and also the most expensive today, is Wenzel Friedrich of San Antonio who started in 1880. All of the furniture is made from cattle horns, available from the slaughter houses. The horns require little care. Some owners like to oil the parts, but most prefer to just dust and wipe with a damp cloth. Chairs are rarely marked and often misattributed, because the makers often copied each other. A Victorian upholstered oak armchair with four cow horns as the arms and back sold in Asheville, N.C. at a Brunk auction a few years ago for $1,400.

Chairs by identified makers sell for much more. The National Texas Longhorn Museum pictures many chairs and describes the unique shapes used by the makers. *** Q: I have a bust of Madonna holding baby Jesus, which is marked “Goldscheider” over a large letter “G,” with “U.S.A.” underneath the letter. Below that, it has the copyright symbol and “American Goldscheider Corp.”

What’s it worth?

A: Frederick Goldscheider started a porcelain factory in Vienna in 1885. When Germany annexed Austria in 1938, the factory was taken over by the Nazi regime. Frederick’s son, Walter, immigrated to the United States in 1940 and founded GoldscheiderU.S.A. in Trenton, New Jersey. The company became Goldscheider-Everlast Corp. in

1941. From 1947 to 1953, it was Goldcrest Ceramics Corp. The Goldscheider factory in Vienna was returned to the family in 1950.

The business in America, now called Goldscheider of Vienna, is a wholesaler of religious statuary, including Madonnas that are imported from Italy. Your bust probably was made in 1940, before the company changed its name. Value depends on the size. Medium-size busts of Madonna sell for about $125. *** Q: My chrome bowl is marked with the words “Krome Kraft, Farber Bros. New York, N.Y.” and three symbols in an arch. When was it made?

A: You have a piece made by Farber Brothers, who started working in New York about 1915. They made silver-plated, nickel-plated, brass, copper or pewter pieces.

Chromium-plated wares were first made in the 1920s. They were popular because of the modern designs and the dishes did not need polishing. The mark on your bowl indicates that it was not made with a china or glass insert that was used with a patented holder. The company went out of business in 1965. *** Q: I have an iron shoe last that is 9 3/4 inches long and 3 1/4 inches wide at the ball of the foot. It weighs 8 1/2 lbs. It has an orange color and some little pieces have crumbled and fallen off. It’s been sitting on the floor next to my fireplace for 30 years.

How old is it? Does it have any value?

A: Shoemakers or cobblers made shoes by forming leather around a wooden or iron last shaped like a foot. Usually a pair of lasts would be used, one for each foot. Shoes began to be mass-produced in the early 1900s and polythylene plastic shoe lasts were made. The orange color and crumbling pieces are caused by rust. It may be beyond repair, but you can try removing the rust.

There are commercial products you can use, or you can try soaking it in white vinegar for 2 hours and then using a stiff wire brush to remove the rust. Kirk, Dold break with Trump on immigration

CHICAGO – Two Illinois Republicans considered among the nation’s most vulnerable congressional incumbents are breaking from their party and its outspoken presidential nominee, Donald Trump, to push laws that would include a path to citizenship for people living in the country illegally.

Rep. Bob Dold and Sen. Mark Kirk joined GOP Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida and business leaders at an event Wednesday in Chicago. They argued comprehensive immigration reform would help the economy, ensure companies have the workers they need and is the right thing to do.

“It’s about people before politics,” said Dold, whose district north of Chicago is home to large numbers of Hispanic voters and Fortune 500 companies. “We need to fix a broken system.”

Immigration has been a tricky issue for Republicans, particularly as the electorate has grown more and more diverse. After a dismal showing at the polls in 2012, leaders said the party must become more inclusive if it is to win back the White House. The follow-

News from across the state Police: 4 people, dog found stabbed in suburban home

BUFFALO GROVE – Four people and a dog were stabbed during a breakin at their Buffalo Grove home early Wednesday and three suspects are in custody, police said.

A 47-year-old man remains hospitalized, but the other three victims – a 16-year-old girl and two males – have been treated and released, Buffalo Grove police said. A fifth person in the home wasn’t harmed, authorities said.

Police believe the incident was not random and are investigating the motive and relationships between the victims and the suspects, Buffalo Grove Police Chief Steven Casstevens said during a Wednesday morning news conference.

said she opposes any “religious-based test for our immigration standards.”

Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio blasted Trump for saying a federal judge of Mexican descent couldn’t be impartial because of Trump’s proposal to build the wall.

The pushback has been particularly strong in left-leaning places such as Illinois, where in recent years lawmakers have approved driver’s licenses and extended Mark Kirk health care for some immigrants who are in the country without legal permission.

Even Bill Kunkler, an executive vice president at a Chicago company who has faithfully voted for Republicans for president his entire adult life, called Trump’s comments about immigrants “ugly and hateful” and predicted it will hurt Republicans in November.

“I hope Trump and his supporters are humiliated at the polls,” said Kunkler, who attributes his success in business to the Mexican immigrants who worked beside him in his early years supervising an Illinois quarry.

cratic former U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider, has said he won’t support Trump. Kirk, facing a difficult challenge from Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, first said he would support the GOP nominee but withdrew his backing in June.

Kirk peppered his remarks at Wednesday’s event with Spanish, talking up a program he started to reunite Mexican families by providing visas for people in Mexico to come to the U.S. But Democratic U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, one of the staunchest pro-immigrant members of Congress, accused Kirk of flip-flopping on the issue and supporting immigration reform only “when it’s politically convenient.”

Kirk and Duckworth have repeatedly clashed over whether the U.S. should admit refugees from Syria. Duckworth wants the U.S. to accept 200,000 refugees, including 100,000 from Syria. Kirk wants to ban them, saying they pose a national security threat.

He said Wednesday that position doesn’t contradict his support for immigrants because “there’s a difference between Mexican immigrants and Syrian refugees.”

Judge: Van Dyke attorney can’t see records of teen

CHICAGO – Lawyers for the Chicago police officer charged in the 2014 shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald will not have access to the victim’s juvenile records, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Jason Van Dyke has no legal right to the confidential files simply because he is charged criminally with the teen’s death, Cook County Juvenile Court Judge Patricia Martin ruled.

“I don’t find you have a special interest in these files,” Martin said, citing the state’s Juvenile Court Act.

Surgeon general’s visit highlights opioid crisis

CHICAGO – The U.S. surgeon general’s campaign against prescription painkiller addiction came to Chicago, where he toured a substance abuse treatment facility.

During a visit Wednesday to the Haymarket Center on Chicago’s West Side, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said the nation can end the opioid epidemic only if there is a change in the way addiction is viewed.

Metra calls a halt on its new rail car plan

CHICAGO – The Metra commuter rail agency serving the Chicago area is no longer looking for a vendor to build nearly 370 new cars because of a shortfall in state funds.

Metra officials said Illinois officials have put on hold more than $300 million in funding previously budgeted for the agency’s capital program. In addition the state doesn’t have a capital plan that would spell out how much money the agency would get in the coming years.

The agency has made modernizing its rolling stock a priority because some cars are about 60 years old.

Metra officials have said they need $11.7 billion in capital funding over the next 10 years to install a federally mandated computerized system to prevent train collisions and other improvements in addition to new rail cars.

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – A police “shoot/don’t shoot” demonstration in Florida went shockingly awry when an officer shot and killed a 73-year-old former librarian with what police said was real ammunition used by mistake at an event designed to bring police and the public together.

Authorities didn’t immediately say how a gun with a live round came to be used at Tuesday evening’s demonstration, noting blank rounds are typically used in such classes. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.

Mary Knowlton, a well-known community volunteer, was shot after being randomly selected to take part in the role-playing scenario illustrating the split-second decisions an officer must make about firing. It was part of a popular citizens academy attended by 35 people, including her 75-year-old husband, and the police chief.

The fighters said that they had seized control of the sprawling convention center that was used as IS’s headquarters in the coastal city. The fighters, who are mainly from the nearby city of Misrata, launched their offensive against IS in June. They also said that they had seized the city’s main hospital of Ibn Sina from IS militants.

Trump’s primary playbook leading him out of bounds The ASSOCIATED PRESS ABINGDON, Va. – In the 2016 presidential campaign, it’s long been an article of faith: The rules of political gravity don’t apply to Donald Trump.

Maybe now they do.

After winning state after state while bouncing between controversies in the GOP primaries, Trump still is stumbling on the stump. His latest unforced mishap: an off-hand remark that critics quickly slammed as a suggestion that gun-rights backers should take a literal shot at Hillary Clinton should she win the White House.

But rather than continuing to float above the criticism, Trump is losing ground in preference polls and alienating prominent Republicans by the day. Even some of his supporters worry Trump’s lack of a filter is hurting his White House chances, a concern they said has only grown in recent weeks.

“You’d think it would be pretty simple for a grown man to keep his mouth shut sometimes,” said Seth Walls, 18, a landscaper from Whitetop, Virginia, who attended his first Trump rally Wednesday. “These Twitter rants and things he does in the media, I definitely think it’s hurting him.”

With early voting set to begin next month in several states, time is running short for Trump to make a major change in his approach. As he did in the primaries, the billionaire continues to dismiss guidance from senior Republicans, in and out of his campaign. He has yet to return to running TV ads even as Clinton fills the airwaves, and leads a campaign team that remains badly understaffed.

But it’s not a surprise the latest flap springs from a Trump rally, the centerpiece of his campaign. Trump revels in the energy provided by the crowd, made up mostly of

“He tries to amp up the crowd, which he’s very good at,” said former Trump adviser Barry Bennett, who said the rallies may be large, but don’t represent the broader coalition of voters who typically decide general elections. “The problem is there’s a television audience watching at home as well.

They have a hard time understanding what he’s doing.”

Among that more diverse and moderate general electorate, polls find Trump trailing Clinton nationally and in most battleground states. The Democratic nominee’s emerging advantage comes at a key moment after both political conventions are over, when the state of a presidential race tends to stabilize and leads are difficult to surmount.

“He can’t seem to put himself in a general election mindset,” said Stephan Thompson, an aide to Republican Gov.

After the Democratic convention, Trump sparked days of outrage across the political spectrum by repeatedly criticizing a Muslim family whose son died fighting the war in Iraq. He further alarmed Republican leaders when he declared he wasn’t ready to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan – a stance he later reversed.

Frustrated GOP officials responded by calling financier Carl Icahn to help persuade Trump to shift his approach.

Some were pleased with the results, pointing to Trump’s economic address Monday in Detroit and the restraint he showed in the face of repeated interruptions by protesters.

The next day, however, Trump inflamed matters anew – and overshadowed a negative report about Clinton’s use of a private email account as secretary of state – by going off script at a rally in North Carolina. Trump said that if Clinton were elected president, there would be “nothing you can do” to stop her from stacking the Supreme Court with anti-gun justices.

He added ambiguously: “Although, the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know. But I’ll tell you what: that will be a horrible day.”

Trump’s reckless call to ‘Second Amendment people’ “Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish, the Second Amendment,” Donald Trump said Tuesday.

“By the way, and if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know.”

The day after Trump delivered a relatively restrained speech on economic policy, the candidate once again trampled on Republican hopes that he would suddenly disguise himself as an acceptable politician.

“You aren’t just responsible for what you say,” Gen. Michael Hayden, a former CIA director, said in response to Trump’s remark. “You’re responsible for what people hear.”

What did people hear? Many no doubt assumed Trump to be recycling ugly tea party rhetoric that contemplates “Second Amendment remedies,” a term former Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle used in her 2010 campaign to suggest armed resistance to government “tyranny.”

The voters rightly rejected Angle at the ballot box, and she receded from public view. But Trump’s flirtation with such rhetoric poses a greater threat. By seeming to encourage armed insurrection against a Hillary Clinton administration, Trump has recklessly magnified the danger of his previous claim that the election is being “rigged” against him.

And encouraging armed resistance against the federal government is not the most worrisome of possible meanings. Other listeners assumed that Trump was encouraging supporters to train their weapons on Clinton herself.

As is often the case, Trump was incoherent enough to permit more than one plausible interpretation of his words. If he had not so often celebrated violence and wielded dark innuendo against political opponents, minority groups, journalists and others, it would be easier to give him the benefit of the doubt in this case.

Unfortunately, a spokesman’s after-the-fact explanation did not clear the bar of plausibility. “Donald Trump was obviously talking about American voters who are passionate about their Second Amendment rights and advocating they use that power at the ballot box,” the spokesman said. No; Trump was talking about what would happen if Clinton were elected.

If Trump were not a major-party presidential nominee, his comment Tuesday might have earned him a stern visit from the Secret Service. Instead, it will simply be added to the ever-growing list of Trump’s disqualifiers – and to the ever-growing burden of Republican leaders who continue to insist that their candidate is suitable to serve.

School taxes are driving people out of DeKalb

To the Editor: I couldn’t help but notice the number of signs going up in DeKalb supporting the DeKalb Classroom Teachers’ Association – the DeKalb School District 428 teachers union.

They were the second-highest number of signs I noticed. The highest number of signs I noticed were the signs in front of houses for sale everywhere in our community. I was struck by the connection between those two signs.

I wonder if we DeKalb residents only have two choices: to continue to have our taxes increased in order to support the teachers union or to leave the community. As a longtime resident, I believe we have a third choice: to stay here and to not continue to pay higher and higher taxes.

Illinois has 25 percent of the total of number of teachers union strikes of all states in the nation combined, yet the average salary of kindergarten though 12th-grade teachers in Illinois are next to the highest in the nation. District 428 has the highest average salaries of any of the districts in DeKalb County, while having the shortest school day of any of those districts.

We recently had family visiting from out of

state. They were astonished at what we paid in real estate taxes. The portion of our sky-high taxes that goes to pay for the school district alone is equal to what they pay in total real estate taxes for houses twice the value of ours. It is no wonder that people are fleeing our area for relief!

Maybe the teachers should take a lesson from their own ads explaining how much they want to reduce bullying in schools. Not negotiating in good faith, packing school board meetings, admonitions that if you don’t want to pay more for teachers you must hate children and their education, phone trees and ultimately striking every time they don’t get what they want, makes for a hostile and threatening community environment. I, for one, am tired of being bullied out of my lunch money.

The bottom line here is that we do have a choice. We can elect members to the District 428 board to bring school-day hours and teachers’ salaries in line with the rest of the districts in the county, or we can capitulate to the DCTA and tax ourselves into departure.

But with these extortionate taxes, who will be there to buy our homes when we leave?

At the same time, most millennials never have been the sexual players portrayed in the media, nor were the Gen-Xers. Still, they face an unprecedented romantic and sexual challenge. Never before have young people reached sexual maturity so early, had so much freedom to explore their sexual desires and identities, and yet had such strong incentives to postpone making long-term romantic commitments.

As an AARP-card-carrying member of the older generation, I am more impressed by the positive changes we see in the sexual behavior of teens and young adults today than by the negative behaviors that persist.

Young people are initiating sex later than their peers did in the aftermath of the sexual revolution of the 1970s.

They are taking more precautions, whether by having fewer partners or practicing safer sex. The ever-widening acceptance of consensual sex has been accompanied by a much more definitive rejection of nonconsensual contact. The incidence of rape and sexual assault has fallen dramatically since the 1970s.

True, in recent decades, sexual frequency among couples has declined in several countries.

Distraction by computers, smartphones or work pressures may be part of the story. But another part may be the fact that women today enjoy more equal status in their relations with men and feel more comfortable saying no.

One group of Gen-Xers and millennials, moreover, seems to have discovered a new secret to sexual happiness.

Among heterosexual couples married since the early 1990s, those reporting the highest marital satisfaction – and the most sex – are couples who share housework and child care. In fact, these egalitarian couples are the only couples having more sex than their counterparts in the past.

So perhaps we should spend less time worrying about millennials’ sex lives and more time following the models they seem to be pioneering.

Trump’s recent Supreme Court vow is meaningless Conservative journalist Hugh Hewitt calls it Donald Trump’s “trump card” against the conservatives who oppose him: The Supreme Court is on the line.

Trump sees it the same way.

“If you really like Donald Trump, that’s great, but if you don’t, you have to vote for me anyway,” the candidate said at a recent rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “You know why? Supreme Court judges, Supreme Court judges.”

The court is, as they say, the strongest argument for Trump – but it’s still a weak argument.

It’s true that the winner of the presidential election will nominate a successor to Antonin Scalia, the late conservative justice. It’s also true that Hillary Clinton would nominate someone who is sure to appall conservatives.

Every Democratic nominee since the Johnson administration has been a lockstep liberal.

A Clinton appointee to the Supreme Court would almost certainly vote to make it impossible to use democratic means to enact school choice, to end racial preferences in college admissions, or to protect unborn children. At the same time that appointee would allow regulations that impinge on rights actu-

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru ally mentioned in the Constitution, such as free political speech and the right to bear arms. The Constitution Americans actually ratified would recede even further into the rear-view mirror.

The fact that the Supreme Court is such an important issue in the election – one that Trump can use to appeal to people who but for that issue would recognize his unfitness for the presidency – is itself a sign of how much distance we have put between ourselves and the Constitution. The court never was meant to be the arbiter of so many policy issues. It is the third branch of government, the one Alexander Hamilton assured us we had little reason to fear since it can neither start wars nor spend money.

Trump has offered a list of judges whom he might nominate to the court if he is elected. Conservatives have praised that list, saying the judges on it would move the court back toward a

more appropriate role.

But conservatives can have no confidence that Trump would both nominate and win confirmation for someone on the list.

Trump’s word is meaningless. He stiffs creditors and contractors. He lies about matters small and large: about having told Republicans to hold their convention in Ohio , about letters he supposedly received from the NFL and about having opposed the Iraq war from the start.

Why would he keep his word on the courts? He doesn’t care about the Constitution or the proper role of judges.

When he talks about the Constitution, it’s glibly and dismissively. When it’s suggested that the Constitution might pose an obstacle to his plans, he says it “doesn’t give us the right to commit suicide.” He knows almost nothing about the law: He can’t tell the difference between a judicial opinion and a bill.

The few times he has taken an interest in constitutional issues, he has been on the other side from most conservatives. He thinks the government should have broad power to take people’s property and give it to developers; they don’t. He has used courts as a weapon

to silence critics, and thinks it should be easier to use them that way. Most conservatives find that record and that idea appalling. If President Trump asks his aides to find him a judge who agrees with him on these issues, they will start by scrapping his list.

To get a conservative on the Supreme Court would require a President Trump to wage an ideological war with Senate Democrats, even though he says he would prefer to be a dealmaker, and even though that war would turn on issues for which he has never in his life shown the slightest concern.

Instead of making good on his promise, he could cut a deal with the Democrats. His nominee could then win confirmation with the support of most Democrats, moderate Republicans, and some conservative Republicans who will want to be on the same side as Trump. Then he could turn to issues that excite him, like the precise design of the “big beautiful door” he is going to put in his wall with Mexico.

Older generations always seem to fret about the sexual behavior and romantic lives of the younger crowd.

In the 1920s, there was alarm when boys stopped visiting in the parlor and started driving girls around in what one newspaper called “a house of prostitution on wheels.” This worry paled in comparison to the panic evoked by the rowdy sexual revolution that began in the late 1960s.

In the 1980s, observers were rightly alarmed by the growing prevalence of early teen sex, AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases. In the first two decades of this century, anxiety shifted to the college hookup scene and the emergence of dating apps to facilitate casual sex.

Recently, however, a new concern has surfaced, with the finding that young adults, those age 20 to 24, are now having less sex than Gen-Xers or baby boomers born in the 1960s did at the same age. Indeed, 15 percent of 20- to 24-year-olds today report having had no sexual partner since they turned 18. (This is more than double the percentage for those born the

1960s; only 6 percent of them reported being sexually inactive at that age.)

Explanations abound. Some experts posit that porn and virtual sex are replacing the intimacy of actual sex.

Others blame the distraction of social media, unrealistic expectations of beauty and sexual prowess perpetuated by the mass media, the pressure of preparing for careers, or the inhibiting effect of so many young adults living with parents.

Many worry about the emergence of a generation that fears the physical and emotional risks of sexual entanglements. Could we be headed for the world once described by science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, where people have become so accustomed to interacting with other humans only over their devices that robots must arrange reproduction to avoid extinction?

My own sense is that the changes in the sexual behavior of millennials are less dramatic and more positive. This generation is hardly embracing celibacy in significant numbers. Most of the increase in sexually inactive 20- to 24-year-olds occurred among women; much of this is probably because of

Practices start for fall sports

ecarifio@shawmedia.com Although football practice were able to begin on Monday, practices for eight IHSA fall sports began Friday, with teams battling near 90-degree heat.

For the DeKalb soccer team, the first couple of practices are tryouts, as coach Brent McIntosh said a lot of the heavy lifting of tactics are taken care of in the summer.

“When you get the numbers we’ve gotten out here today, obviously it’s a bigger talent pool,” McIntosh said. “In general we’re pleased with the work the kids put in today and looking forward to a good tryout session tomorrow.”

Despite taking fourth in the Northern Illinois Big 12 and losing in the first round of the playoffs, the Barbs return nine starters from last year.

“We’re cautiously optimistic,” McIntosh said. “We have a lot of players coming back from last year’s squad. ... We have close to 14, 15 kids coming back from last year’s team.”

The player said it was easy to tell who worked out in the summer and who didn’t, thanks to the heat – heat index readings were in the mid-90s most of the day.

“We expect a lot of kids to not be able to complete it because it’s so hot out there,” senior midfielder Leo Marquez said. “A lot of these kids haven’t touched a ball in a while, so they’ve fallen out of a lot of their habits.”

“A lot of people put in hard work in the offseason,” said senior forward Alonzo Jones. “We had some people put off that hard work and weren’t ready for the heat.”

Like McIntosh, junior midfielder Arben Redzepi was optimistic heading into

the season, which starts with the Barbs hosting the Barb Cup. The open with Belvidere North at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 24.

“We have a lot of players coming back so I think we’ll be pretty good,” Redzepi said.

North Regional last year, just 26 points behind a trip to state. Six of the top seven runners return from last year, with four or five new runners looking to crack the top seven.

As practice began Wednesday for the Spartans, Lambdin said he saw a very motivated team show up. The team took seventh at the Class 2A Woodstock

Creek school year coincides with the start of practice. Not this year.

With school not starting for students until Tuesday, coach Stephanie Crutcher decided to use the opportunity to have two-a-days for the first time since 2009.

“Its been exciting,” Crutcher said after the first day Wednesday. “It’s re-invigorating to me to see that much hard work being put in by the girls.”

But the time it’s late October you’re worried about the cold.”

The Knights lost two state-qualifying runners from last year, but bring in a freshman, Rachel Richtman, who won the Class 3A IESA Championship last year. She’ll join her sister, Becca Richtman, on the girls team, plus Matt Richtman, their bother, runs for the boys.

Hammel dominates as Cubs win 9th straight over Angels

CHICAGO – Jason Hammel won his career-best fifth straight start, pitching four-hit ball over six scoreless innings, and the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Angels, 3-1, Wednesday night for their season-high ninth straight win.

The major league-leading Cubs matched their longest streak since Aug. 6-15 of last year and moved a season-best 30 games over .500 (71-41).

They go into a four-game set against St. Louis at Wrigley Field with three straight series sweeps after consecutive victories over the Angels.

Hammel (12-5) struck out six, walked two and helped himself at the plate when he singled and scored in the fifth against Ricky Nolasco to make it 2-0.

Addison Russell made it 3-1 with a solo homer off JC Ramirez in the eighth.

Dexter Fowler chipped in with two hits, including an RBI double. Anthony Rizzo drove in a run with a single, and the Cubs won for the 12th time in 13 games.

The Angels, last in the AL West, matched a season high with their sixth straight loss. And with their next four games at AL Central leader Cleveland,

the schedule doesn’t get much easier.

Nolasco (4-9) was a tough-luck loser, allowing two runs and six hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked one in his second start since the Angels acquired him in a trade from Minnesota on Aug. 1.

Four questions Bears can try to answer in preseason opener

1. How will Kevin White and Leonard Floyd fare in their first NFL game?

The Bears’ past two first-round picks will have their first experience of an NFL game. For White, it’ll be yet another hurdle to overcome in his return from last year’s stress fracture in his left shin. He has looked the part in camp, showing off his speed and strength while becoming a top target for quarterback Jay Cutler. If fellow receivers Alshon Jeffery and Eddie Royal are sidelined, that will allow for White to get even more opportunities. From a mental standpoint, it would be important for White to get the reps with live tackling as he continues to build confidence heading into the regular season.

Floyd has started to come on in training camp after an illness and then a shoulder injury limited him in a few practices. Fellow linebacker Pernell McPhee remains out and the Bears might not need to see a ton from Willie Young and Lamarr Houston, so Floyd can show what he can do against NFL tackles. How can he translate his speed and athleticism to the field? Can he use his length to offset his slender physique to get into the backfield? Floyd will get important snaps Thursday that can tell the coaching staff what is next in his development.

2. How will the new-look offensive line work together against an impressive Broncos pass rush?

3. Will Harold Jones-Quartey keep a firm grasp on a starting safety job, or will a rookie step up?

Jones-Quartey has manned the No. 1 safety spot throughout the offseason next to Adrian Amos. His aggressive and physical play should be on display in a preseason game where he can continue his push to be the Week 1 starter.

Thursday also will be the first NFL game for draft picks Deon Bush and DeAndre Houston-Carson, and they’ll want to show there still is a competition at safety. The Bears are comfortable going young here, now it’s a question of which young safety is most ready to be the starter.

The Bears open the 2016 preseason Thursday night against the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos. With a host of new faces on both sides of the ball, this is a key part of the evaluation process for general manager Ryan Pace, coach John Fox and the rest of the staff.

Here are four questions for the Bears to answer at Soldier Field in the preseason opener:

We’re not expecting a busy night for the first-team offense, but any game reps will be important for the group of five that has three new players – Bobby Massie, Cody Whitehair and Ted Larsen. Cohesion needs to be built, and the coaches will want to see what they have on the interior with Whitehair and Larsen.

Maybe a bigger storyline, however, will be the second-team offensive line. The Bears are dangerously thin at tackle after waiving Nick Becton on Wednesday. Nate Chandler retired, and now they are hoping former Steeler Mike Adams will be healthy enough to contribute, or former Panther Garry Williams can be a reliable backup. Neither played in 2015.

Kazakhstan wins 1st swim medal

RIO DE JANEIRO – Kazakhstan has its first Olympic swimming medal.

A gold one, at that.

Dmitriy Balandin pulled off a stunning upset in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke Wednesday night, winning from the eighth lane to put his central Asian country on the swimming medal stand for the first time.

Yosuhiro Koseki of Japan went out fast and was more than a second under world-record pace at the final turn. But Balandin was right with him in the outside lane, and Koseki couldn’t keep up the pace.

Balandin touched in 2 minutes, 7.46 seconds. Josh Prenot of the United States rallied to claim silver in 2:07.53, while Russia’s Anton Chupkov landed the bronze in 2:07.70.

Kevin Cordes, of the U.S. and whose grandparents, Pat and Gary Cordes, live in DeKalb, finished eighth in the race with a time of 2:08.34.

Also Wednesday, Katie Ledecky was the fastest swimmer in the pool, and she brought her American teammates along for the ride.

The 19-year-old turned in another overpowering performance to carry

the U.S. to victory in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay, capturing her third gold and fourth medal overall at the Rio Olympics.

The U.S. trailed through the first three legs of the race, as Sweden, China and then Australia swapped the top spot.

Then, it was Ledecky’s turn on the anchor leg.

She blew everyone away.

The U.S. finished in 7 minutes, 43.03 seconds, with Ledecky a full body length ahead of Tamsin Cook, who touched in 7:44.87 to give Australia the silver. Canada took the bronze in 7:45.39.

Coming off the 20th and 21st gold medals of his career, Michael Phelps wasn’t up for any hardware. But he did cruise through the semifinals of the 200 individual medley with the fastest time, besting longtime rival and countryman Ryan Lochte.

Swimming next to Lochte, Phelps put up an effortless-looking time of 1:55.78 to claim the prime middle lane in Thursday night’s final.

Lochte will be right next to him again, ranking second in 1:56.28.

Phelps will be seeking his fourth straight 200 IM title at the Olympics.

He’s also got a chance to pull off that feat in the 100 butterfly.

U.S. men’s basketball team gets tested, beats Australia

Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross have finished the Olympic group stage unbeaten, but not before losing their first set of the Summer Games.

The U.S. women beat Switzerland, 21-13, 22-24, 15-12, on Wednesday night to win their pool with a 3-0 record. They now await news on an opponent for the round-of-16, which begins Friday.

Walsh Jennings is going for her fourth straight Olympic gold medal.

Ross won silver in London.

American fencer Homer earns silver

Third-ranked Aron Szilagyi of Hungary beat upstart American fencer Daryl Homer to win gold in men’s sabre.

Despite the Wednesay loss, Homer earned the second silver medal for the U.S. men’s fencing team in Rio. Homer’s final touch gave him a thrilling 15-14 victory over Iran’s Mojtaba Abedini in the semifinals and put him within a win of the first gold for the U.S. men in the modern era. But Szilagyi proved to be too much for the 10th-ranked American, who fell 15-8.

In a reflection of how viewing habits are changing, NBC said that by the end of Tuesday, people had already streamed more minutes of live Olympics coverage through the network’s website and app than for the entirety of the London Games. Through Tuesday, NBC said 883 million minutes of Olympic action had been streamed, compared to 818 million for all of London.

RIO DE JANEIRO – The blowouts are over. The Olympics are underway.

After nothing but pushovers this summer, the U.S. men’s basketball team faced someone who pushed back.

“This is the real world now, and that’s good for us,” coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Finally tested, Carmelo Anthony and Kyrie Irving had the answers.

Anthony scored 31 points on the night he became the U.S. men’s Olympic career scoring leader, combining with Irving for all the Americans’ baskets in the fourth quarter of a 98-88 victory over Australia on Wednesday night.

Irving – born in Australia – added 19 points, including a 3-pointer with 1:35 left after Australia had closed within four.

A team that won its first two games by a combined 101 points could never get a comfortable lead – and for a while couldn’t get one at all. The Australians, with big bodies inside, quality point guards to counter the American pressure and a wealth of NBA championship experience, stood toe to toe with the team that had blown them out of the past two Olympics in the quarterfinals.

But Anthony, the first male to play in four Olympics, steadied the Americans in the first competitive game most of this new team had ever experienced.

“We kind of expected a game like this, a physical game, a grind-out game from playing against Australia over the past couple years,” Anthony said, “and going into tonight we knew it was going to come down to the end of the game where we were really going to have to buckle down and focus in and make plays down the stretch.”

Kevin Durant capped off the scoring with two free throws, making him the only player other than Irving or Anthony to score in the period.

The Americans, who had barely broken a sweat in Brazil, trailed early in the fourth quarter before Anthony hit a flurry of 3-pointers to put the Americans on top.

Patty Mills, the tournament scoring leader, had 30 points for Australia.

Fielder emotional as he ends career after surgeries

ARLINGTON, Texas – Prince Fielder wiped away tears, pointed to his two sons sitting next to him and talked about being in big league clubhouses since he was their age.

Still wearing a neck brace 12 days after a second cervical fusion, the burly 32-year-old Fielder wept Wednesday as he said health issues were forcing him to end his 12-season career.

“To not be able to play, it’s going to be tough,” said Fielder, once one of the most durable players in the majors.

His sons – one who turns 12 next week

and the other 10 – sat with him at the podium, mostly with their heads down and also shedding tears. They have been regulars at the ballpark with their dad, much like he often was with his father, Cecil, a slugger who played 13 seasons for five teams.

“The kids actually love baseball more than Prince Fielder Prince. It was a sad moment,” teammate Elvis Andrus said.

“You rarely see him like that.”

All of Fielder’s teammates, along with Rangers coaches and staff, filled the interview room to support him.

When the Rangers acquired him in November 2013 for second baseman Ian Kinsler, the first baseman had played at least 157 games every year since 2006, and appeared in 809 of 810 possible games the five seasons. But Fielder was limited to 289 games in Texas because of two neck surgeries in just more than two years.

“Even though I know I struggled personally this year, this was actually the most fun I’ve ever had and the best I’ve ever felt mentally about baseball,” Fielder said. “That’s the only thing that really hurts about not being able to play is that my brain was really good, with my body, just, you know, it

Backup quarterback Fitzgerald leaving Illinois

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois coach Lovie Smith said redshirt freshman quarterback Jimmy Fitzgerald is leaving the team.

Smith said Wednesday that he and Fitzgerald met Tuesday to discuss the move. Smith said the quarterback is leaving to “get a fresh start” at another school. The release did not say where Fitzgerald plans to go.

Fitzgerald said in the release that he plans to “consider other opportunities for my collegiate career.” The Champaign

Brazil tops Denmark 4-0 to avoid elimination in men’s soccer

SALVADOR, Brazil – Brazil finally found its scoring touch in the men’s soccer tournament at the Olympics.

The host country advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Denmark 4-0 Wednesday, avoiding another embarrassing elimination in front of the home fans.

Those Olympic athlete videos that make you cry?

NBC started on them more than a year ago

he Olympics, perhaps more than any other sporting spectacle, are all about emotion.

How else do you get viewers to remain glued to a screen and root wholeheartedly for a shot-putter from New Zealand? (Be real, you are not a die-hard put fan.)

And nothing gets a viewer invested in an obscure Olympic sport quite like having their heartstrings tugged. Training montages and epic synthesizer tracks can help.

Enter NBC’s athlete profiles. These videos, produced by NBC Sports and aired during competitions and Opening Ceremonies, give an athlete’s backstory. Maybe it’s the years of ungodly wake-up calls to train. Or the financial hardship that had to be overcome to reach the world’s greatest stage. Or an athlete’s incredibly moving relationship with his brother. (Warning, tears ahead.)

These mini-bios, which last anywhere from 90 seconds to three minutes, have become such an integral part of NBC’s Olympic television programming that maybe you didn’t realize they were there.

The aim is to introduce, or reintroduce, viewers to athletes and “give them a reason to care prior to competition,” said Mark Levy, NBC Sports Group senior vice president of original productions.

The profiles put a boxer’s softer side on display.

Or provide context for the intense competitive spirit of a badminton player. And Levy insists the goal isn’t to make us cry: “Any time we can associate a part of someone’s story or journey that resonates with one of our viewers, that is what we consider a success.”

NBC first produced these profiles when the network resumed broadcasting the Olympics in 1988, as a way to inform viewers about global athletes, Levy said. During the 1992 Summer Games, the profiles “became a staple of who we are as a network.”

“This was a very important part of our presentation, to supplement the live and taped coverage of an Olympic Games: to tell compelling stories of the athletes and their perseverance and training, and what they put forth to become Olympians,” Levy said.

The casual viewer who watches these profiles in between high dives and pole vaults may not realize the amount of work and forethought put into production. Work begins in earnest 14 to 18 months before Opening Ceremonies, with 25 staff members working on the profiles. Video shoots for the Rio Games required travel to Cuba, Japan and Ukraine.

Exposure to music fundamentals such as scales, chords, rhythm, melody, harmony and playing technique allows students to begin building their own toolbox of musical skills, promoting confident and comfortable playing.

No previous guitar experience is required, and students should bring a guitar to class. Class meets from 6 to 6:55 p.m. Wednesdays starting Sept. 7.

Northern Illinois University Community School of the Arts offers music lessons and classes for children and adults of all ages. Registration is underway for the fall semester.

Financial aid is available for students age 18 or younger who want to pursue their study of the arts and need tuition assistance. Applications are available online and by calling the office. The deadline to submit an application for need-based scholarships for fall 2016 is Aug. 18.

Music ensembles

Musicians share a love of music with others through the ensemble experience. The community school offers several music ensembles, some for young musicians and some for older children and adults. Every ensemble performs in concert in the NIU music building at the end of each semester.

CSA Symphonette is a string orchestra for ages 8 to 16 that rehearses on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Directed by Linc Smelser, this group plays lively and challenging music, and performs in concert twice during the year. The first rehearsal is Sept. 20.

CSA Sinfonia is directed by Smelser. This full youth orchestra meets on Wednesdays beginning Sept. 7 from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m., for musicians age 14 to 20. CSA Sinfonia plays a wide variety of music and performs two concerts during the year. Call to ask about openings; this is an audition-only ensemble.

NIUkulele Ensemble is fun for beginning and intermediate ukulele players ages 9 to adult, directed

by CSA teacher Eric Schroeder.

Beginners receive instruction and intermediate players are given more complicated parts to play. All types of ukuleles are welcome, and everyone must have an instrument. The group meets from 7:30 to 8:25 p.m. Mondays beginning Sept. 12.

CSA Guitar Ensemble meets Thursdays from 8 to 8:55 p.m. Directed by Quentin Dover, beginning and intermediate guitar players age 14 to adult work on ensemble skills, build confidence and skill on the guitar, and perform two concerts during the year.

The first rehearsal is Sept. 15.

CSA Steelband is a way for people to experience the unique sound of the steelpan. Directed by Yuko Asada, CSA Steelband welcomes members age 12 to adult. No previous experience on the instrument is needed, but it is recommended that students be able to read music.

The steelpan family ranges from soprano to bass and each student chooses an instrument. The group rehearses from 6:30 to 7:25 p.m. Mondays beginning Sept. 12, playing many types of music including calypso, classical, rock and rhythm and blues, and performing in concert several times during the year.

CSA Children’s Choir, directed by Mary Lynn Doherty, rehearses from

4:45 to 6:15 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Sept. 7. Welcoming children age 7 to 15, the choir learns a challenging and varied repertoire from all over the world and performs in concert in fall and spring. Children develop sight-reading and musicianship skills and learn to work together in a fun and dynamic atmosphere.

Prelude is a group music class with singing, dancing and rhythm and music games for toddlers ages 1 to 3.

Taught by Laurie Rodriguez, Prelude class meets Saturdays from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Development, a group music class for children ages 3 to 5, builds upon the activities of the Prelude class with more music activities and some demonstrations of music instruments.

Development class meets on Saturdays from 10:35 to 11:05 a.m. Classes begin Sept. 3 and meet for 12 weeks.

Piano Starter for Children meets on Tuesdays from 4 to 4:40 p.m. This small group class is limited to four children ages 5 to 7 and is ideal as a beginning class for children to prepare for private music lessons. Taught by piano and harp teacher Jaina Krueger, this class meets for 12 weeks. Once the fall class has filled, registration for the spring section will be open.

Art Express is for ages 4 to 12 and meets from 1 to 3 p.m. on six Saturdays beginning Sept. 17. Students learn about art and the world as they create original arts and crafts.

Traditional private music lessons are taught on a weekly basis and are available on all instruments. Music lessons using the Suzuki approach (combining private and group lessons) for young children are taught on violin, cello, piano and guitar.

Students have lessons weekly in the NIU Music Building and are invited to participate in recitals at the end of each semester. Registration for private lessons is due Aug. 22, and lessons begin the week of Aug. 29.

Guitar Basics and Intermediate Guitar is taught by guitarist and longtime teacher Quentin Dover on Thursday evenings. Guitar Basics meets from 6 to 6:55 p.m. and Intermediate Guitar meets from 7 to 7:55 p.m. Both classes are for ages 13 to adult, begin on Sept. 8 and meet for 12 weeks.

Jaina Krueger teaches group piano classes for ages 13 to adult on Monday evenings starting Aug. 29. Square One Piano: Group Basics Class meets from 6:15 to 7 p.m. and is for beginners. Piano Forte: Building Piano Skills meets from 7 to 7:45 p.m. and is for intermediate players.

Qi Gong (or Chi-Kung) is a precursor of Tai Chi. Students learn 24 postures divided into three sets. These exercises can be done at one time during the day, or interspersed amid music practice sessions or rehearsals, to renew energy, release tension, enable relaxation and concentration.

Class meets from 5 to 6 p.m. on six Thursdays starting Sept. 1.

Three soloists featured at Municipal Band concert DAILY CHRONICLE

The DeKalb Municipal Band, directed by Kirk Lundbeck, will feature vocalist Denny Vaupel and instrumentalists and brothers Brian and Brett Balika at its next concert on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

The performance will take place at 8 p.m. at the Dee Palmer Band Shell in Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

Vaupel, a wellknown musician in the DeKalb County area, is multi-talented. Not only is he a vocalist, but he also plays piano and a variety of instruments.

Denny After 48 years of teachVaupel ing music and band in public and Catholic schools, Vaupel retired at the close of the 2016 school year. His first performance as guest vocalist with the DeKalb Municipal Band was in July 2015.

Vaupel performs on piano and vocals for Black Tie Jazz Trio, Jazz in Progress, Class Act and Shananigans Big Band and plays bass clarinet in the Kishwaukee Concert Band and keyboard parts when needed.

Vaupel will sing “Wonderful Day,” “Moon River” from the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and Frank Sinatra’s hit “Witchcraft.”

In a Hopkins Park premiere performance of their duo, DeKalb brothers Brian and Brett Balika will perform a cornet and trombone duet by cornet virtuoso Herbert L. Clarke.

Brian Balika has been involved in the music scene in DeKalb from an early age. He attended DeKalb High School, continued his music studies at NIU, and now teaches in the DeKalb School District. He directs three grade-level bands, jazz band, and marching band at Clinton Rosette Middle School, and assists with the

Brett Balika has been performing with the Municipal Band on a regular basis for five years but has been coming to concerts his whole life. A recent graduate of DePaul University, Balika is now a band and music teacher at JFK Elementary in Spring Valley. He began playing trombone when he was 10 years old, and studied with Kirk Lundbeck.

Other music on Tuesday’s program will include the contemporary concert march “Burst of Flame,” one of Karl King’s most distinctive marches with a Spanish flavor, “Pan American March,” Henry Fillmore’s circus screamer “Rolling Thunder” and the ever popular “Semper Fidelis,” by John Philip Sousa.

Music from the 1966 musical “Cabaret,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Slava!,” “Thunder and Lightning Polka” and “Bandolero” will provide a variety of sounds to delight the audience.

• To decrease the amount of arsenic in rice, cook it as you would cook pasta: Cook one part rice in 6 to 10 parts water and drain off the excess. Cooking it this way can decrease the arsenic content by 40 to 60 percent.

Finally, be mindful brown rice has more arsenic than white. That’s because arsenic accumulates in the “germ” that is removed from brown rice to make white rice. Cereals and other products made from brown rice are particularly likely to be high in arsenic.

Please understand I’m not saying most of us should avoid rice. I eat rice a good deal, and brown rice preferentially.

That’s because it has a better glycemic index and also tastes great.

What the FDA and the AAP are saying is infants and pregnant women should minimize rice intake. The risk to the developing brain of a child from arsenic in rice is not great. After all, billions of living babies and their pregnant mothers have had rice meals and are doing just fine. However, there are better alternatives for pregnant women and infants than rice.

Dear Dr. K: You recently wrote about the dangers of feeding rice cereal to babies. Can you tell me more about this?

What should I give my baby instead?

Dear Reader: For years, rice cereal has been a go-to food for parents when they start their babies on solid foods. My Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Claire McCarthy, a primary care pediatrician at Boston Children’s Hospital, says it’s time to change that.

In 2012, the Consumer Products Safety Commission issued a report warning about high levels of inorganic arsenic in rice and rice products. Inorganic arsenic is a common ingredient in pesticides and other products used in farming. It can linger in the soil for a long time after it is used – and rice plants are particularly good at absorbing arsenic from the soil.

In high doses, inorganic arsenic is lethal. Even small amounts can damage the brain, nerves, blood vessels or skin – and increase the risk of birth defects and cancer. Babies who eat two servings of rice cereal a day could double their lifetime cancer risk. In addition, studies show babies exposed to inorganic arsenic, including exposure before they are born, have a higher risk of learning problems.

The FDA has decided to propose a new upper limit for inorganic arsenic in infant rice cereal of 100 parts per billion (ppb).

The FDA and the American Academy of Pediatrics suggest the following for young children and pregnant women: • Iron-fortified cereals still are a recommended first food for babies. But rice cereal isn’t the only choice. Oat, barley and mixed-grain cereals can provide iron, too.

• Toddlers should eat varied grains as well.

However, on the second round, East can discard a discouraging diamond two. Then, when South leads his second club toward dummy’s jack, West should find it easy to take that trick and shift to the heart 10.

Declarer does much better to lead his club six at trick two, before East has had a chance to signal. However, an experienced partnership will know the answer. At trick two, East plays his club nine, his highest club being a suit-preference signal for hearts.
