Just more than four years ago, I was named editor of the Daily Chronicle.

Landing this job was and remains a source of pride for me – newspapers are institutions that serve their communities, and it’s a privilege to edit one.

The work anniversary inspired me to research my predecessors in this job. Here’s what I learned after spending some time searching the Daily Chronicle archives: • I am the 15th editor in the 137-year history of the Daily Chronicle. At four years and counting, my tenure already has been longer than eight of those before me.

• The longest-serving editor in Chronicle history was Frank W. Greenaway, who bought the Chronicle with a partner in 1909 at age 31 and remained editor for 45 years until his death in 1953 at age 76.

Just as no baseball pitcher ever will win more games than Cy Young’s 511, it is unlikely any journalist ever will be editor longer than Mr. Greenaway. (Although he’s been dead 63 years, it seems appropriate to call him “Mr. Greenaway.”)

Clinton Rosette, the newspaper’s first editor, was the second-longest tenured. He was editor for almost 30 years, starting in 1879; he left the newspaper in 1909 and died later that year.

• Greenaway was one of two editors to die while holding the position. Editor Frank J. Crouse died one evening in May 1976 of a heart attack at age 43, leaving behind a wife and six children.

The Chronicle was an afternoon paper at the time, so the next day’s edition included an Opinion page he had worked on the day before, along with an editorial dedicating that day’s page to him.

• The 1970s saw a lot of leadership turnover at the Chronicle – five different men were editor during the decade, beginning with DeKalb resident Barry Schrader from 1969 to 1972. Schrader also is the only former editor who still contributes to the Daily Chronicle.

He led the newspaper for almost exactly 14 years, from February 1981 to February 1995. The newspaper did nothing to note his resignation except to remove his name from the newsroom directory. He deserved better.

• The only woman to work as editor was my former colleague and fellow University of Illinois graduate Kristen Schmidt, who held the job from July 2008 to October 2009.

• John Kelleher, editor of the Daily Chronicle from Dec. 6, 1999, to Jan. 30, 2007, announced his retirement from journalism only last week in a column at the Havre (Montana) Daily News. (Havre is in north-central Montana, less than 50 miles from the Canadian border.)

Although I know three of my predecessors (Schrader, Schmidt and Jason Schaumburg, 2009 to 2012), I’m fairly certain that all of them would want the Daily Chronicle to keep serving the people of DeKalb County by telling them about what’s going on in their communities.

That is what my colleagues and I plan to do.

Family fun, fitness showcased at Sycamore’s Tuesdays on the Town

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Family fun and fitness activities took center stage Tuesday evening in downtown Sycamore as part of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce’s Tuesdays on the Town, a family-friendly event held on the second Tuesday from May through September.

Kids were able to hula-hoop, play games and throw footballs while their parents mingled with representatives from several local businesses, Northern Illinois University Athletics and the Kishwaukee YMCA. Darcy Eggleson, events and marketing coordinator for the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, said Tuesday’s fitness theme was new this year, and she thinks it is important to bring new ideas to the community.

“This event gets people out and about and gets them active,” she said. “We want to keep people coming downtown, and this is a nice event in the middle of the week to get people downtown to shop and eat local, and to support these businesses.”

Lesley Feyerherm, YMCA youth development director, was helping kids with nutrition and fitness-related crafts. She said the evening was important to remind families about the importance of physical activity.

“The YMCA is a community organization that’s right in between DeKalb and Sycamore, and we think of both towns as our home and the residents as our family,”she said.

“Fitness is something that busy people don’t get a lot of. It’s hard to balance fitness with other things.

And they need a night of fun and activity.”

Qiana Hardy of Sycamore and her 8-year-old son, Imtihaan, wanted to get outside and check out the games and activities.

“I wanted to see our friends and go to the farmers market,”she said.

“We like to be active. Too many people aren’t anymore, and I’m glad Sycamore does this. He’s having a lot of fun playing games.”

Cryssida Green of Cortland was chasing her 4-year-old son, Quentin, around as he ran from game to game. She said she loves to attend events such as Tuesdays on the

Town because they are fun, free and keep her connected to the community.

“I want my son to know how to be a part of his community. These are the people who see him at the YMCA and who will teach him in school,” she said. “He’s just having a great time. I want him to be outside running, jumping, playing and smelling the fresh air.”

Morris White, assistant athletic director for marketing and game experience at NIU, said being a part of community events is very important to NIU athletics.

“The university relies on the community for support by coming to games and other campus events,” he said. “This is part of our town and own efforts to enhance the relationship between the community and NIU.”

Conor Wickness, 7, of Sycamore won an NIU T-shirt, and his sister, Aislinn, 5, won an NIU pillowcase.

Their mother, Brigid, said her family comes to all of the Tuesdays on the Town events.

“This is a nice family treat, and it’s nice to get out before school starts next week,” she said.

Pam Rogers of DeKalb was enjoying the evening with her grandson. This was the first time she has attended a Tuesdays on the Town event.

“This is nice, and the theme sends a very important message,” she said.

“Kids need to stay physically active.

They’re always on computers, and they need to keep their bodies busy.”

Tyler Scott, head instructor at Hero Martial Arts in DeKalb, was helping to promote Hero’s health, wellness and safety programs to

visitors. He said there are many more programs available to families, such as children’s safety seminars, in addition to traditional martial arts classes.

“I was raised around martial arts, so this is very important to me,”he said. “It promotes health and wellness of the mind and the body. It’s important that people have both. And now, more than ever, it’s important for kids to know how to be safe.”

Rachel Rapp, an instructor at Sycamore’s Performing Arts Academy, was hoping to get more visitors involved with its programs because of the fitness benefits dancing can provide.

“Our classes are fun for any age group,” she said. “Dancing is a lot of work – there’s a lot of strength training. It’s just very fun.”

NO LENIENCY FOR BLAGOJEVICH Judge denies former governor’s bid to lighten 14-year sentence

CHICAGO – A federal judge on Tuesday refused to lighten Rod Blagojevich’s original 14-year prison sentence for corruption, rejecting pleas for leniency by the now-white-haired former Illinois governor who attended the resentencing hearing by video from a Colorado prison a thousand miles away.

Blagojevich, 59, was eligible for resentencing after an appeals court last year threw out several convictions related to his alleged attempt to sell or trade an appointment to President Barack Obama’s old U.S. Senate seat.

A somber, contrite Blagojevich spoke for 20 minutes in a sometimes apologetic, sometimes rambling statement before U.S. District Judge James Zagel announced the sentence, telling the court he understood he made mistakes.

“I wish I could turn back the clock and make different choices,” said Blagojevich, who didn’t use notes. “These have been hard years.”

Zagel said that even though the appeals court threw out five of the 18 counts against the former governor, the remaining ones still justified the original sentence. The appeals court said in its ruling last year that Blagojevich wasn’t necessarily entitled to a lower sentence, adding that the 14-year term fell below what federal guidelines recommended.

As the judge announced his decision, Blagojevich could be seen on screen bowing his head. In the courtroom, his two daughters sobbed, the younger one placing her head on her mother, Patti’s, shoulder.

The one-time contestant on Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” reality show wanted Zagel to sharply reduce his sentence to just five years, which would have meant him going free within months. Instead, with the 14-year term reaffirmed, his projected release date remains 2024, which includes two years’ credit for good behavior.

Zagel said he went through more than 100 letters from fellow prisoners.

Many portrayed Blagojevich – known as brash in his days as governor – as humble and self-effacing, as well as an insightful life coach and lecturer on everything from the Civil War to Richard Nixon.

But Zagel said they had not seen the same evidence jurors saw of Blagojev-

Defense lawyers said Blagojevich has been a model prisoner, noting in one filing how the Elvis Presley fan formed a prison band called “The Jailhouse Rockers.” The group, which had a 21-song play list, dissolved after another inmate, the lead guitarist, was released.

Zagel told Tuesday’s hearing that Blagojevich’s exemplary behavior behind bars wasn’t relevant to deciding on an appropriate punishment.

The resentencing, where attendees could see Blagojevich on several screens around the courtroom, marked Blagojevich’s first appearance in a public forum since entering prison.

Blagojevich was famously fastidious about his dark hair as governor, but it went all white because hair dyes are banned in prison. He sat in a chair during the two-hour hearing in bluegreen prison garb with a nametag with his Inmate No. 40892-424 on his shirt.

Other than his hair, the avid runner who has continued to exercise behind bars looked fit.

Subdued for much of the hearing, Blagojevich wiped tears from his eyes

when his daughters, 13-year-old Annie and 20-year-old Amy, made statements in court. Annie, an aspiring pianist, described how much her father had missed of her childhood, saying she could only play “Mary Had a Little Lamb” when she last saw him at home, but has since begun playing Beethoven.

“I don’t want to grow up, because I want to wait for him to come home,” she said.

Prosecutors urged Zagel to impose the same 14-year prison term – one of the stiffest sentences for corruption in Illinois history, arguing that would send a message to would-be corrupt politicians in a state where four of the last 10 governors have ended up in prison.

Speaking at the hearing Tuesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Debra Bonamici countered the notion that Blagojevich is a fundamentally changed man, noting how he has expressed remorse for having made “mistakes” rather than for “committing crimes.”

“He really is the same man who appeared before you in 2011,” she said.

Bonamici conceded that seeing Blagojevich’s kids in court was “heartbreaking,” but added, “we can’t forget

the people of Illinois. They were the victims of his crimes.”

Blagojevich’s wife told reporters outside court that the resentencing was “cruel and heartless and unfair.”

“I’m dumbfounded and flabbergasted at the inability for the judge to see that things are different than they were 4½ years ago and his unwillingness to bestow even the smallest amount of leniency or mercy or kindness,” Patti Blagojevich said.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last year tossed convictions tied to Blagojevich’s bid to win a White House appointment for appointing someone to Obama’s U.S. Senate seat. It upheld his convictions on allegations that he tried to swap the Senate appointment for campaign cash, finding that trading one job appointment for another does not break the law.

After the appellate court’s finding, Blagojevich appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to toss his remaining convictions, including one for trying to extort a children’s hospital for a campaign contribution and lying to the FBI. But the high court refused to hear the longshot appeal.

Gary Lee Berg, age 66, of Malta, IL, died Monday Aug. 8, 2016, at home.

Gary was born April 20, 1950, in DeKalb, the son of Vern and Florence (Stahl) Berg. He graduated from Shabbona High School in 1968 and went on to receive an associate degree in accounting from Kishwaukee College in Malta. He married Margaret Ihssen on June 19, 1998, in Sycamore.

Gary was co-owner of Shabbona Lakeside Bait & Tackle for 14 years, retiring 5 years ago. He loved to go fishing and hunting with his sons. Gary liked woodworking, and created many items for family and friends, always enjoying the challenge of making something new.

He dearly loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Malta; his mother, Florence Berg of Shabbona; three sons, Tom (Jodie) Hjelmberg of Omro,WI, Shane (Janesse) Hjelmberg of Belvidere, IL, and Kyle (Bobbi) Hjelmberg of Oshkosh, WI; two daughters, Tammie Allen of San Antonio and Kimberly (Dave) Bradford of Davis Junction, IL; two brothers, Dennis (Joyce) Berg of Dixon, IL, and Kevin (Sharon) Berg of Waterman, IL; a sister, Julie (Leon) Tuestad of Shabbona; and eight grandchildren, Braisia, Kora, Brooke, Kristen, Greg, Cory, Nicole, and Helen.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father.

3 charged when police find prescription pills, stolen handgun in vehicle

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man remained in jail Tuesday and two others face charges after police said they found a stolen handgun, cash and prescription painkillers in a vehicle.

Charged in connection with the Friday incident are Jermaine Malloy, 20, of the 100 block of East Taylor Street, DeKalb; Blake Fisher, 20, of the 900 block of Seamen Street, DeKalb; and Anjulisa Alvarado-Rosario, 19, of the 500 block of Georjean Court, Sycamore.

Officers said they stopped a car driven by Alvarado-Rosario and found 60 hydrocodone pills, about $300 cash and a .38-caliber handgun.

At the time, police identified Malloy as a known gang member, court records show. Police said they later learned the gun was reported stolen in DeKalb.

Malloy is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a felony offense typically punishable by one to three years in prison. He was out on bail at the time and had been court-ordered to have no contact with Fisher, court records show. He is due back in court Aug. 29.

Alvarado-Rosario is charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. If she is convicted of the charge, she could be Jermaine sentenced to three to Malloy seven years in prison. She posted $300 bail Monday and was released from the DeKalb County Jail.

Her next court date is scheduled for Sept. 6.

Fisher is charged Blake with possession of a Fisher stolen firearm and unlawful use of a weapon. The most serious charge against him, possession of a stolen firearm, typically is punishable by three to seven years in prison.

The groups talked about some of the college’s challenges – including declining enrollment and unpredictable state funding – as well as some of the discord on the board, of late. A major point was the ongoing disconnect between the foundation and the college’s board.

But the leaders of each group plan to work more closely going forward to bring money and pride to the college, they said. One goal is to lessen Kishwaukee College’s reliance on state aid.

MALTA – It’s been a challenging year so far, members of the Kishwaukee College Foundation pointed out Tuesday, but the fundraising arm of the two-year college and the board of trustees are forging an alliance going forward.

“It’s kind of a reset,” said Bob Johnson, chairman of the Kishwaukee College Board of Trustees. “We’re going to have to figure out more creative ways to do the things that are necessary here to help our students.”

He and other board members, along with college President Laurie Borowicz, convened with foundation members in a special joint meeting held in the college’s

cafeteria.

The rare meeting came after the departure this summer of Marshall Hayes, who had been head of the foundation since 2007. His exodus was preceded by that of associate director Diane Johnson, who resigned as of June 21, and other members have left, too.

The foundation, which controls assets of more than $6 million, helps provide student scholarships and raise funds for the college. Last school year, the foundation awarded $265,172 in scholarships to 231 students, according to college data.

Johnson said the college and foundation should work more closely to fundraise, in an effort to avoid increasing tuition and fees to help balance the college’s budget. But one foundation member said

STATE Champaign man recalls Vietnam War experiences

The News-Gazette via The Associated Press CHAMPAIGN – Robin Counce, who carried a grenade launcher in Vietnam, nearly was killed by “friendly fire” and still sees a therapist to talk about his PTSD. Counce, 68, grew up in Danville a minister’s son. He still leans on his faith and his moral compass – “I believe in right” – in dealing with his dangerous service during the seven months he spent in that country.

Among the medals he received, almost one for every month, were the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal and First Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Medal.

Counce had been drafted. He served in the Army from 1968 to 1970.

After training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and Fort Lewis, Washington, he got orders to report to Vietnam via Fort Ord, California.

Counce was assigned a grenade launcher, which he said was about the size of a sawed-off shotgun.

He joined a unit that targeted Viet Cong guerrillas using guerrilla tactics of their own.

“We were supposed to search for them, find them and kill them,” he recalled.

10-year-old Chicago boy shot in back, in critical condition

CHICAGO – The mother of a 10-year-old boy who was shot in Chicago said he is in critical condition after undergoing surgery.

Mellanie Washington said her son, Tavon Tanner, started yelling, “I can’t breathe” and vomited blood after being shot in the back about 10:15 p.m.

Monday. He was sitting on the porch of his family’s West Side home. Washington said the bullet damaged her son’s pancreas, intestines, kidneys and spleen, which was removed.

Illinois dedicates monument to Purple Heart recipients

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois has established a monument in Springfield to honor those who were wounded in combat.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency said it has dedicated the monument, at the Springfield cemetery where Abraham Lincoln is buried, to Purple Heart medal recipients.

“The Cobra helicopters were firing (hundreds of) rounds a minute, and it sounded like a giant meat grinder. I could see the tracers and bullets hitting all around us, knocking dirt and water into the air. I heard God, I heard Jesus, and I heard the Lord all in harmony,” he said.

To prevent the men from being fired on, Hackworth told Counce’s company commander to put a strobe light on his helmet so he could see exactly where they were.

Hackworth then held his own helicopter directly above Counce’s company so the Cobras would break off. And they did, although the Viet Cong still fired at the helicopter.

He also helped save another soldier by lobbing grenades in the enemy’s tree line.

After the war, Counce returned to Danville, where he first worked in a bookstore.

Friends helped him a get a job at the GM foundry in Tilton, where he spent 25 years. He spent another dozen working for Wal-Mart.

Counce moved to Champaign when he got married to Shirley, whom he called his rock. He has a daughter in Danville named Robin.

Long after the war, a friend asked Counce whether he got angry easily, and whether he had nightmares. That’s when he began to seek therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder at the VA Illiana Health Care System in Danville.

It’s helped, he said, though he hasn’t stopped treatment.

Michigan City teen drowns in Lake Michigan

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. – Indiana conservation police said a 14-year-old northwest Indiana teenager has drowned in Lake Michigan.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said late Monday that Travis Mensha of Michigan City died about 7 p.m. Monday at a Michigan City hospital. Officials said Travis disappeared about 175 feet from shore at Washington Park in Michigan City a little after 6 p.m.

Divers started searching for Travis shortly afterward, and his body was recovered.

Officials said another teen was with Travis at the time.

That teen was able to rescue himself at a nearby breakwall.

If Trump can’t get along with GOP, how could he govern?

WASHINGTON – Beyond the immediate fallout from his rocky relationship with party elders, there’s a longer-term reality for Donald Trump: Should he win the presidency, he would have to work closely with the same GOP leaders he has vilified on the campaign trail.

He has taken modest steps in recent days to ease tensions, yet a growing chorus of experienced Republicans is warning that the billionaire businessman’s brash and divisive approach will make it difficult for him to govern effectively.

“He hasn’t been able to get along with his own party as the nominee. How is he going to get along with them when he has to govern?” asked Rick Tyler, a former aide to Ted Cruz’s presidential bid. “If Trump can’t get along with the sitting speaker, and has poor relationships with sitting members of the Legislature, the idea of fashioning a conservative legislative agenda seems to me virtually nonexistent.”

Tyler may not be an impartial observer.

But it seems clear that Trump’s turbulent relationships with Republican leaders could take on greater significance after Election Day. A President Trump may need Cruz – or “Lyin’ Ted,” as Trump calls him – to help confirm his Supreme Court picks. He may need Florida Sen. Marco Rubio – or “Little Marco” – to help implement his immigration priorities.

And President Trump’s broader governing agenda surely would require the cooperation of House Speaker Paul Ryan, whom Trump thrust into a political firestorm a week ago by refusing to endorse him.

Trump ended that feud by endorsing Ryan late Friday – along with Arizona Sen. John McCain and New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte – after four days of manufactured chaos, but the episode left bad blood.

A steady stream of defections has continued, with longtime Republican officials and policy experts vowing not to vote for the GOP nominee. They include Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a four-term Republican senator, who announced Monday that she could not support Trump and “his constant stream of cruel comments.”

“Donald Trump does not reflect historical Republican values nor the inclusive approach to governing that is critical to healing the divisions in our country,” Collins wrote in The Washington Post.

She is not alone.

Several Republican senators, including Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Mark Kirk of Illinois, have said they won’t vote for Trump.

Others, such as Jeff Flake of Arizona and Mike Lee of Utah, have refused to endorse him so far.

Trump’s team said it’s not for lack of effort by the candidate.

One early backer, Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., notes that Trump has made multiple trips to Capitol Hill to talk to his critics. He said there’s only a handful of holdouts.

“Once Mr. Trump is the president of the United States and shows that willingness to reach out, and not be dictatorial, but rather collaborative, I think they may just disappear automatically,” Collins said of the Republican critics. “I think it’s going to be a very collaborative effort.”

Yet Trump has shown little ability to moderate his approach for any significant period of time.

After pummeling Cruz with personal insults during the primary season, Trump resurrected a conspiracy theory linking Cruz’s father to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy the day after the Republican National Convention.

A demonstrated expert in parliamentary obstruction tactics, the Texas senator sits on the powerful Judiciary Committee, which has the power to endorse or reject Supreme Court nominees before they are reviewed by the full Senate. The next president may well need to fill more than one court vacancy.

Beyond Cruz, the committee features several other GOP critics: Lee, Flake and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham.

“Donald Trump shows no sign of being able to reach out to people who have been his adversaries,” said Vin Weber, a former Minnesota Republican congressman who is refusing to vote for Trump.

It’s unclear to what extent a frustrated Trump might turn to executive actions should Congress reject his wishes.

Better stimulus to spur new development

Developers have gone from overbuilding bogeymen to would-be charity cases.

Where once city officials worried about limiting growth and making it pay for itself, now there is talk of eliminating the fees designed to accomplish that goal in hopes of spurring development.

In DeKalb, City Council members are considering eliminating fees designed to support improvements to the local roads, and the water system, as well as a $1,000 sales tax rebate for homebuyers who buy appliances and other qualifying items at DeKalb retailers.

In Sycamore, there is a push for the city to suspend all impact fees as well. Genoa already has a policy that waives all impact fees for the first 20 houses built each year.

The snail-paced housing growth in our area is having negative effects, including deflating property values, empty schools and lost jobs.

In response, DeKalb officials have met with the DeKalb County Builders and Developers Association and DeKalb Chamber of Commerce representatives to devise a proposal that would knock more than $5,000 off the cost to build a 2,000-square-foot single-family home in the city.

We agree that DeKalb has fallen below what would be considered a healthy level of growth, but like City Council members, we question how effective the incentive proposals would be in attracting new residents.

In the world of real estate, location is far more important than a moderate rebate, especially if the homebuilder pockets part of that savings to boost their bottom line.

We believe people will – and should – move to DeKalb County because of the quality of life our area offers.

While not insignificant, $5,000 to $10,000 in savings are less enticing to a homebuyer who plans to finance their purchase over 15 or 30 years.

(Property taxes, on the other hand, are a different story. A prospective annual tax bill of $7,000 a year or more, which will never be paid off, can give homebuyers pause.)

If there are fees that were imposed during the time of fast-paced growth that are not needed now, by all means, suspend them or replace them with those that make sense. There’s no point in collecting fees for the sake of collecting them.

However, we should not go back to a time when the members of the community had to pay more to accommodate demands of newcomers.

When it comes to incentivizing new development, the best prescription is good schools, lower property taxes, and jobs.

If our communities continue to make progress in these areas, growth will follow.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Supporting Hillary best alternative to D.T.

To the Editor: Boy, oh boy, is it tempting to say, “I told you so!”

Or, better, “Don’t blame me, I voted for Bernie!” Alas, there is vapid satisfaction in this declaration in the face of the scary threat of a Donald Trump (speaking of “vapid”) win in November’s presidential election. I’ll just call this threat “The D.T.s.”

The D.T.s have shocked most of us into the realization that bad things can and do happen to good people. “He” is really happening, unless we are actually living in an episode of “The Twilight Zone.”

One contributor to the Daily Chronicle is local proof that D.T. supporters actually do exist. Amazing. And that’s only the third one I am aware of, outside of two yard signs for Trump.

Let’s hope that these three times are not the charm.

Most of the Republicans I know have either left the party or are aching with serious cases of buyer’s remorse in the wake of the many personality reveals Trump has shown. Pick any one – each enough to sink anyone else’s political ship.

My own fear – a thoroughly puzzling one, for sure – is of the supposed Bernie Sanders supporters who would whiplash his message into a 180 conversion to The D.T.s side. This is more than a disappointment; it is proof these folks never really got the Sanders message to begin with. The amount of sense that defection makes has to be in the negative numbers for what is at stake.

Spite is a terrible thing. Spite along with narcissism actually has driven “The Donald” to do and say most of what has aghast the nation.

I don’t want to argue that Hillary Clinton doesn’t have plenty of puzzling traits of her own. Of course, she does.

But her experience can’t be matched on any side, especially in the guise of D.T. And, sadly, Jill Stein of the Green Party – while intelligent and progressive – cannot win.

So, I lament the same lament I have for two years: Ber-

nie should have run as an independent. With what we’ve learned about The D.T.s and the trouble(s) with Hillary, Sanders could have won easily, still making history – breaking through the perverse, bloated mockery that is our two-party system.

The D.T.s? No, thanks. That prospect is too crippling and sad. In this belief, I know that I am not alone.

Use more sense in choosing Sycamore car show exhibits

To the Editor: The restored autos at the annual Fizz Ehrler Memorial Turning Back Time Car Show brought warm feelings for many of us who also recalled the time when those cars were showroom new and then likely priced out of reach.

Alas, all was not so cheerful. It was disturbing to find many motorcycles of the loud variety, some intent on waking the dead with racket-blasting straight-pipe exhausts.

For some, mufflers must interfere with their sense of individuality or open road freedom, and be darned with assaulting the public.

But of most concern was the motorcycle dyno tester mounted on a trailer. It allowed for a race bike to be mounted upon it and its power measured at full throttle.

The racket was awful, presenting risk to hearing and mechanical failure. That children and tots who roamed nearby mattered not.

I prevail on organizers for better sense next show.

Ideas like this don’t meet safety or the common good for a public event. Let engine testing be done at a machine shop.

Muslims, women and homosexuals as freely as they once did. But for all the (sometimes justified) criticism it receives, so-called political correctness has at heart an important goal: language that is more inclusive, respectful and reflective of marginalized lives.

And who is more marginalized than women?

As a feminist, I was appalled at first to find myself guilty of sexist language. Now, I’m amused. I suspect the three months till November and the (please, God!) four to eight years of a Clinton presidency are going to provide numerous refresher courses for men like me, men perhaps a little too sanguine, a little too smugly assured of their own enlightenment.

Language is about to become a minefield for us.

I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

How employers broke unions by creating a culture of fear

By KIM PHILLIPS–FEIN Why are there no labor unions in America? This is, of course, an overstatement – millions of Americans still belong to unions. But the size of the unionized workforce has declined every year for 40 years. And even at its mid-20th-century peak, it was lower than in most European countries.

Many explanations for low union density turn on the distinctiveness of American culture. Americans are deemed individualists, with self-interest trumping any sense of the common good. They are driven wild with consumer longings, willing to do anything for low prices. They are entrepreneurial, identifying with their employers and always dreaming of upward mobility or striking it rich rather than claiming solidarity via working-class identity.

One might question whether this is really an apt description of American culture. But to the degree that it is accurate, it may have grown out of our history of employer intransigence and hostility to labor.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, American workers literally fought battles – in Homestead, Penn-

sylvania; Ludlow, Colorado; the hills of West Virginia – as they struggled to gain the right to organize unions.

Until the Great Depression, employers were under no obligation legally to recognize or bargain with unions, and few did so voluntarily, instead provoking strikes that often turned bloody.

Even after Congress passed the Wagner Act in 1935, which created an institutional mechanism whereby workers could vote to join unions, major employers sought to subvert the law by spying on their workers, planning strategies to dissuade their employees from voting to unionize and, in some cases, even stockpiling weapons.

After the Supreme Court upheld the Wagner Act in 1937, companies worked together through such organizations as the National Association of Manufacturers to disseminate strategies for fighting unions. Employers staged elaborate propaganda campaigns intended to persuade workers to vote against unionization, sometimes even firing workers deemed to be pro-union in direct violation of the law.

Such tactics were one reason union density remained low outside

of the core manufacturing industries that had been organized during the 1930s. It also remained low in the South and Southwest. In the South, segregationists and businessmen worked together to resist unions. In the Southwest, civic boosters sold their cities as alternatives to the high-wage Northeast and Midwest.

Over time, manufacturers closed their plants in such union strongholds as Detroit and Philadelphia, Camden and Trenton, relocating first to the American South and then eventually beyond U.S. borders – to Mexico, the Caribbean and farther overseas. The most successful companies in the burgeoning service sector – companies such as Wal-Mart – built a fierce resistance against unionization into their business models from the start. At the same time, conservative politicians from the 1970s onward portrayed unions as inherently coercive, while liberals grew wary of passing legislation that could shift the playing field and make it easier for workers to unionize.

History has shaped the landscape for any workers who might want to organize unions today. Because of the intensity of employer opposition,

workers who seek to unionize risk polarizing their communities. They may be blamed for taking actions that could lead to their towns losing the company altogether; they even might be fired themselves in retaliation. Is it any wonder that many conclude unionization is not worth the effort? Is it surprising that, despite unionized workers earning higher wages than nonunion workers and enjoying a measure of protection on the job, many consider it easier to find some way to make do and get by rather than take a leap of faith and organize?

When employers have been able to wield such political power, and when there are so many examples of collective defeat, it can seem as though acting alone is the only real way to improve your life. Over time, this comes to appear as a culture of individualism. But it might be more precisely described as a culture of fear.

Let me tell you how I got in trouble with ladies.

No, not “the” ladies. Not, in fact, female human beings, period. Rather, I’m talking about the word itself, “ladies.”

Years ago, my editor was a female human being named Emily to whom I filed a piece that used the L-word as a synonym for women. Em hit the roof. It took me awhile to understand why.

For me, “ladies” connoted nothing more sinister than genteel women, the feminine counterpoint to “gentlemen.” Used in conjunction with that word, I suspect it wouldn’t have bothered Emily. But used on its own it had, for her, a whiff of paternalistic condescension, i.e., “You ladies ought not trouble your pretty little heads with politics.” I made the change.

I’ve always considered that moment a master class in sexist language and how the words we choose can say things beyond what we (consciously) intend. But I never thought I’d take a refresher course.

DeKALB – Iron sharpens iron for the Northern Illinois football team.

A year after they each had a breakout season that gave them national attention, receiver Kenny Golladay and cornerback Shawun Lurry frequently find themselves battling in practice as the Huskies have kicked off training camp this week with the first practice with shoulder pads Tuesday.

“Going up against Kenny is crazy – big, tall receiver, strong hands, runs routes good,” Lurry said. “Going up against Kenny helps me out when I go against other top receivers that are tall and fast and have strong hands like Kenny.”

Golladay also was quick to offer up praise for Lurry.

“His instincts (make him a great corner),” Golladay said. “Coming out of high school, he played corner and receiver, so he already has the hands. And just film and footwork and putting in the extra work. In 1-on-1s, it’s about getting each other better. No slacking off.

We want to give each other a great look every time we go against each other.”

The two shared the same story last year, going from unknowns to becoming faces of the program – not to mention, they both wear No. 19. Under-recruited out of high school and in his two seasons at North Dakota, Golladay burst onto the scene with 73 catches for 1,129 and 10 touchdowns. In his first two games, he had 17 receptions for 357 yards – nine catches for 213 yards in the season opener against UNLV and eight catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns in an easy win over Murray State.

Lurry quickly became a fan favorite, as well. He got the first of his FBS-leading nine interceptions against UNLV and started an impressive stretch in which he got a pick in five consecutive games – including two against Ohio State.

He also led the nation with 273 interception return yards, capped by a 64-yard return for a score in the Mid-American Conference Championship against Bowling Green.

“It feels a little different because I wasn’t a starter the first game of the season,” Lurry said. “I came off the bench. Then the rest of the year I start-

Lurry, who comes from West Palm Beach, Florida, said he doesn’t go on social media much, but hears various things through the grapevine – whether it’s from relatives or teammates. His season last year garnered him plenty of national attention – including being named a first-team All-American by Phil Steele and the Football Writers Association of America in 2015 and making the watchlist for a bevy of awards heading into the preseason this year.

Golladay, a Chicago native, also got his name on the map, being named

second-team all-MAC and making the preseason watchlist for the Biletnikoff Award.

“They’re competing hard against each other,” NIU coach Rod Carey said.

“They both had great summers, and that’s a starting point and they’re both looking to take that next step in their games. From what I can tell, they’re locked in and doing all the details right, and when you do, the big things usually come.”

Carey said the dynamic pair is not handled any differently coming off their breakout seasons – they still get plenty of reps with the starters, saying, “they want the work.” While teams had trouble simply avoiding Lurry’s side of

the field, Carey said that by the end of the year, Golladay was getting plenty of attention from opposing defenses.

Instead of taking the foot off the gas pedal and simply coasting off the big year last season, however, Golladay said he wants to make an even bigger splash in his final year with the Huskies.

“It feels like I set the bar,” he said.

“That just gives me more room for improvement to keep pushing myself and set the bar even higher. The determination is just making it to the next level. A season like last year, a season like that won’t get you to the next level.

I need to have an even better season than last year. That’s what drives me.

There’s no room to slow down now.”

ecarifio@shawmedia.com A lot of teams are rolling along with two-a-days as football practice began Monday.

Genoa-Kingston had two practices Monday, but Tuesday switched to only one, while Hiawatha has elected to go with one long practice each day.

Cogs coach Bill McCarty said the school’s early schedule – which included freshman orientation Tuesday and teachers reporting back Wednesday ahead of students’ first day Monday – necessitated the one daily practice routine.

Still, the second-year coach said he was impressed with the first two days of practice.

“It’s kind of like every other year,” said McCarty, who also coached the Cogs from 2005 to 2010. “I’m happy with the way the kids have been working so far.”

McCarty said participation during the summer was limited – right now there are only 24 players on the varsity roster, and he said about eight of those players showed up consistently in the weight room all summer.

“I’m just optimistic about the fact the kids are working hard,” McCarty said. “That’s about all you could ask at this time. We’re in helmets but not pads, so we’re not really hitting. We don’t want injuries – really no one does this time of year, but it’s really multiplied when your numbers are this low.

So we’re working on conditioning. We

need to be in shape.”

Hiawatha also is rolling with one practice, although first-year coach Jason Keneway said it logistically is easier to keep the players in one spot for the three hours permitted by IHSA rules instead of splitting it into two.

Keneway said the enthusiasm he felt over the summer has carried over for the Hawks, who went 4-5 for the second straight year last season and is looking for its first winning season since 2009 and first playoff berth since 1987.

“The kids see the potential they have and see how they can now access that potential,” said Keneway, who played for the Hawks until he graduated in 2010. “They can get to the level they should have been playing at for many years.”

Game a shot in the arm for St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – Before the Rams left town in January, the St. Louis Blues already were in line to get an outdoor NHL stadium series game – just not the Winter Classic.

Team Chairman Tom Stillman credits the NHL for recognizing the city sorely needed a shot in the arm and scheduling the Blues against the rival Blackhawks on Jan. 2 at Busch Stadium.

“It’s something that St. Louis could use right about now,” Stillman said.

“They’re all great, but this is the big one.”

Commissioner Gary Bettman, executives from both NHL teams plus the Cardinals and former players attended a news conference at home plate in the first public forum since the announcement. As a centerpiece, goalie helmets from both teams flanked the mask of Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina.

“This is a major league city, and, unfortunately, the NFL has not deemed us worthy, which I think is ridiculous,” Blues Hall of Famer Bernie Federko said. “It’s a soothing moment for sports fans because for our sport, this is the big hurrah.”

The Blues-Cardinals partnership no doubt was a major selling point. The teams are friendly competitors and illustrated that point not long after the

Rams’ decision to leave for Los Angeles when Stillman and Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III dropped a ceremonial puck before a game.

DeWitt said the Cardinals had been “bugging” the commissioner “for a number of years in ways subtle and not so subtle” to bring the Classic to St. Louis. Bettman said there was “no hesitation” choosing St. Louis as site of the eighth Winter Classic.

“It was clear that both teams were

coming together on behalf of the city and their fan bases,” Bettman said. “Anybody watching would have appreciated that.”

The Cardinals have had a number of international soccer friendlies at Busch Stadium as well as major concerts, such as U2 a few years ago and Paul McCartney this weekend. The stadium still retains faint evidence of lines marking the pitch for a game between Liverpool and Roma on Aug. 1.

Now this will be the first experience of outdoor hockey for the city. In the days after the announcement in March, the Blues received more than 40,000 ticket inquiries.

For young Blues defenseman Colton Parayko, the lone current player in attendance, it’ll be his first outdoor game since he was with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons in juniors in 2010 or 2011.

“You come to Cardinals games and they’re pretty loud,” Parayko said.

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS – The Bears held their final open practice of training camp Tuesday at Olivet Nazarene University while they get set for Thursday’s preseason opener at Soldier Field against the Broncos.

“It’s all about that ‘exam.’ Those exams are those preseason games, and I can’t think of a better test than the defending world champs Thursday night,” Bears coach John Fox said.

Fox expects the starters to play the first quarter, the backups in the second quarter and then the third-stringers in the second half. The reps will increase for the top units the next two games before starters likely sit in the preseason finale.

Two players will be under the spot-

light for their first game in a Bears uniform – receiver Kevin White and linebacker Leonard Floyd. Without live tackling in minicamp or training camp – aside from Saturday’s practice at Soldier Field – the preseason allows for a better sense of how players react to being hit and tackling the opponent.

That microscope also will be on receiv- Kevin White er Alshon Jeffery, who caught passes during drills Tuesday but still was limited with his hamstring injury. Quarterback Jay Cutler said it’s important for Jeffery to get those live reps, and Fox echoed the importance for all players to get the preseason experience.

“Every player’s different, and

you’re trying to get ready for the ultimate test, and that’s Houston (in Week 1),” Fox said. “But those practice games, getting used to finishing, because we don’t finish on each other here at practice, so I think that little edge it takes to play live football against an opponent, everybody needs some of it as long as the body can do it.”

Jeffery told reportLeonard Floyd ers that no decision has been made yet as to his availability for the game, but he agrees it’d be worthwhile to get some work in.

“It’s always good to get on the same page in the preseason, so it can carry over to the regular season,” he said.

BOURBONNAIS – The focus of the Bears’ deep-passing game in 2016 will be Kevin White, and understandably so, but they have another deep threat fighting to make the roster who can stretch the defense.

Deonte Thompson had two catches last season – for 81 yards. He showed his ability to fly both as a receiver and as a kickoff returner, and with injuries to Alshon Jeffery and Eddie Royal, he has received plenty of reps with quarterback Jay Cutler in training camp.

“I definitely can run, getting behind DBs won’t be too hard,” Thompson said Tuesday, “and we have a quarterback who can throw it, and he likes throwing it deep.”

The 6-foot, 205-pound receiver appeared in one game in 2014 and never has played in more than seven contests in a season. He spent time early last season on the practice squad before playing in the final seven games as the top kickoff returner, but Thompson has made big plays this summer as a

Thompson also gets coaching from new Bears receivers coach Curtis Johnson, who recruited Thompson to play at Miami (Fla.) before Johnson went to Tulane, so Thompson went to Gainesville.

“I’ve learned a lot from him,” Thompson said about the vocal position coach. “… He’s a character. When he isn’t talking to you, that’s a problem. You want him to be talking to you.”

Thompson is in a competition at receiver with other holdovers such as Marc Mariani, Josh Bellamy and Cameron Meredith, plus seventh-round pick Daniel Braverman. Thompson, Mariani and Braverman also return kicks.

“To be honest, we know we’re competing for these spots, but we’re friends,” Thompson said. “We know the best man wins, whoever that may be. We just come out here and compete. We encourage each other, we give each other pointers. It’s not like we’re hating on each other. It’s just a great, friendly competition.”

When the preseason begins Thursday, Thompson will have chances to continue his strong summer as a receiver, and potentially separate himself in the return game, where he has big aspirations for 2016.

“I think this kickoff return unit will be very special this year,” he said.

Tebow will try to play pro baseball The ASSOCIATED PRESS

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – With professional football not working out, Tim Tebow is going to give baseball a try.

The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL first-round draft pick plans to hold a workout for Major League Baseball teams this month. Tebow last played organized baseball in high school.

ESPN first reported the news.

Agent Brodie Van Wagenen, the cohead of CAA Baseball, said in a statement that the workout is not a publicity stunt.

“His work ethic is unprecedented, and

his passion for the game is infectious. He knows the challenges that lie ahead of him given his age and experience, but he is determined to achieve his goal of playing in the Major Leagues,” Van Wagenen said in a statement.

Tebow, who turns 29 Sunday, has been training in Scottsdale with Tim Tebow former major league catcher Chad Moeller.

“I am beyond impressed with Tim’s athleticism and swing, and it goes without saying that he has shown a high level of discipline and strong work

ethic,” Moeller said in a statement released by CAA. “I see bat speed and power and real baseball talent. I truly believe Tim has the skill set and potential to achieve his goal of playing in the Major Leagues, and based on what I have seen over the past two months, it could happen relatively quickly.”

Former All-Star slugger Gary Sheffield came to bat for Tebow on twitter.

“I spent time with Tim Tebow in the cages,” Sheffield wrote, “he’s a NATURAL. Tim has IT.” Tebow won the Heisman and two national championships with the University of Florida and was drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos in 2010. He

AP source: Fielder done playing after 2nd surgery

A person with direct knowledge of the medical decision said Texas Rangers slugger Prince Fielder will have to quit playing baseball after his second neck surgery.

That person told The Associated Press that Fielder isn’t formally retiring, but that doctors won’t give him medical clearance to play. That person spoke on the condition of anonymity Tuesday because there was no official announcement from the Rangers or Fielder about his future.

Fielder had a cervical fusion July 29 to repair a herniation between two disks in his neck. That was done just above the area where the 32-year-old Fielder had a similar surgery in May 2014, only 26 months earlier.

A-Rod to start Thursday for Yankees at Fenway Park

BOSTON – Alex Rodriguez’s memories of Fenway Park are as textured as the complicated story of his 22-year career.

This week, A-Rod will wear pinstripes in Boston as a player for the final time.

He will start in the finale of the Yankees’ three-game series Thursday night before playing his final game with New York at home the next night.

Manager Joe Girardi announced the plans for A-Rod in Boston before Tuesday night’s series opener. After Friday’s game against the Rays, Rodriguez will be released and shift into a role as a special adviser.

Urban Meyer has a bevy of talented reinforcements ready to step to the fore after the NFL plucked a record number of players from Ohio State.

J.T. Barrett has the quarterback’s job all to himself, finally, and can hurt defenses in a variety of ways, and redshirt freshman Mike Weber is ready to step in at running back. The receiving corps and offensive line are retooling. The strength of the defense is at linebacker, where Raekwon McMillan made a team-high 119 tackles.

Michigan continues is rise under Jim Harbaugh, and the Wolverines are contenders to win the Big Ten and figure in the playoff picture if they can end their four-game losing skid to Ohio State. The offensive line and receivers are set. All the Wolverines need to do is settle on a quarterback. New defensive coordinator Don Brown inherits key pieces to what was one of the nation’s best units.

Michigan State won the East and went to the playoff after ending Ohio State’s 30-game conference winning streak in Columbus. The inclination would be to expect the Spartans to take a step back because of key departures on offense. Don’t count them out, however. The defense is loaded, and the Ohio State and Michigan games are at home.

CHICAGO – Cubs infielder Tommy La Stella has refused to report to Triple-A Iowa after being optioned to the minors nearly two weeks ago, and the Cubs placed him on the temporary inactive list Tuesday.

La Stella started at third base for the Cubs in last year’s wild-card victory over Pittsburgh. He was optioned to the minors on July 29 when they activated outfielder Chris Coghlan off the disabled list.

The left-handed hitting La Stella is batting .295 with a .388 on-base percentage in 105 at-bats with the Cubs and didn’t take the demotion well.

“He’s a 27-year-old kid working through some stuff and we’re trying to give him time to work through those things,” Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said. “We’ve had a lot of contact with him and we’ll continue to do that.”

Manager Joe Maddon said he’s communicated by text message with La Stella, who was back home in New Jersey working out.

“He’s not angry. He’s not upset,” Maddon said. “He’s just at that point where he doesn’t know exactly what he wants to do. That’s it.”

CHICAGO – The Cubs activated righthander Jason Hammel off the bereavement list and optioned right-hander Justin Grimm to Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs made the move Tuesday, a day before Hammel is scheduled to start against the Los Angeles Angels.

Hammel didn’t travel to the Cubs’ weekend series at Oakland because of a family matter. He’s 11-5 with a 3.07 ERA in 21 starts.

White Sox put Garcia on DL with knee injury

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The White Sox put outfielder-designated hitter Avisail Garcia on the disabled list with a right knee sprain before Tuesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

Garcia is hitting .240 with 11 doubles, nine home runs and 36 RBIs in 86 games.

The Sox recalled outfielder Jason Coats, who is hitting .329 with a .390 on-base percentage in 65 games with Triple-A Charlotte. Coats went 2 for 22 with one double in 12 games in two previous stints this season with the Sox. – Wire reports

Iowa turned into the darling of college football with its 12-0 regular season, and the Hawkeyes have the schedule and returning personnel to win the division again. Quarterback C.J. Beathard, most of the top running backs and several key receivers are back, and All-America cornerback Desmond King is among eight returning starters on defense.

Nebraska had five losses by five points or fewer, but a bowl win over UCLA left the Cornhuskers with a positive vibe coming out of a 6-7 first season under Mike Riley. If the Huskers can split back-to-back road games against Wisconsin and Ohio State, their Nov. 25 game at Iowa might decide the West.

Northwestern returns workhorse running back Justin Jackson from a team that won 10 games despite averaging fewer than 20 points. Wisconsin gets running back Corey Clement back from injury, but the Badgers are unsettled at quarterback and play one of the most brutal schedules in the country.

The big change in the Big Ten is the move to the nine-game conference schedule. What doesn’t figure to change is the dominance of the East Division.

Ohio State, Michigan and defending champion Michigan State all are positioned to make runs at being national top 10 teams, if not College Football Playoff contenders.

Iowa’s amazing 12-0 regular season in 2015 notwithstanding, this looks like another year when the West will play in the East’s considerable shadow.

The Big Ten tried to create balance when it split into divisions with Nebraska’s entry in Jim Harbaugh 2011. The Legends and Leaders monikers went by the wayside after three years, replaced by the geographical East-West alignment.

Last season, Michigan State went to the playoff and was joined by fellow East members Ohio State and Michigan among the top 12 teams in the final Top 25. Iowa, at No. 9, was the only West team among the top dozen.

The year before, Ohio State won the national championship and Michigan State was No. 6 in the final AP poll, with Wisconsin the highest West team at No. 13. The East won the past two Big Ten championship games, with the folks in Wisconsin still smarting from the 59-0 beat-down administered by Ohio State in 2014.

Commissioner Jim Delany said shuffling the divisions is not in the plans.

“Things are a little cyclical,” he said. “I mean, if you look at other conferences who have experimented much longer than we have, you had a 10- or 12-year run by the eastern group in the SEC and then a 15- , 10-, 12-year run by the West. It looks like the (SEC) East is getting stronger.

“We have some great programs in the West who have won national championships, that have won big bowls, that have found themselves in the top five and 10 rankings in the country, have great coaches, great resources, great brands. So I suspect over time there would be parity.”

The Big Ten will join the Pac-12 and Big 12 in playing nine-game conference schedules. SEC and ACC teams each play eight league games.

Phelps wins 21st gold medal Ledecky wins her 2nd gold medal in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO – This is the one Michael Phelps really wanted, and it showed.

With challengers all around, he simply wouldn’t be denied.

After touching the wall first – barely – he held up one finger.

Then he sat on a lane rope, egging on the roaring crowd at the Olympic Aquatics Center with both hands, be- Katie Ledecky fore emphatically pumping his fist in the direction of his fiancée and their infant son.

Once again, the gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly belongs to Phelps.

The United States won the 4x200-meter freestyle relay later, giving Phelps his 21st Olympic gold medal.

Being the 21th gold of his career only added to the satisfaction.

Making up for one of the few losses in his staggering career, Phelps held off Japan’s Masato Sakai by a mere four-hun-

dredths of a second. The winning time was 1 minute, 53.36 seconds, but that was of little concern. The only thing that mattered was getting to the wall first.

Four years ago, Phelps mistimed his finish in the swooping stroke he does better than anyone, gliding to the wall a little too long after his final stroke.

That allowed Chad le Clos of South Africa to stunningly win gold in an event that Phelps had dominated for the better part of a decade.

In what was shaping up to be another very good night for the Americans, Katie Ledecky took the most challenging step toward a feat that’s only been done one other time.

Ledecky held off Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom to win the 200 freestyle and give the American star her second gold of the Rio Games.

Debbie Meyer is the only female swimmer to capture the three longest freestyle events at a single Olympics, winning the 200, 400 and 800 at Mexico City in 1968. Ledecky looks like a lock to match Meyer, having already won the 200 and 400 titles and an overwhelming favorite in the 800.

Karolyi’s ‘Final Five’ wins gold

The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO – Just call them the Final Five.

Dominant. Peerless. Golden.

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team gave retiring national team coordinator Martha Karolyi a fitting sendoff in the Olympic finals Tuesday night, putting on a two-hour display of precision and class. Their score of 184.897 was more than eight points clear of silver medalist Russia, a blowout that Michael Jordan’s “Dream Team” should envy.

The Americans’ second straight Olympic team triumph – and third overall – was never in doubt. From the second Laurie Hernandez drilled her opening vault to Simone Biles’ boundary-pushing floor exercise to end it, the U.S. put on an exhibition that showed how far the divide between themselves and everyone else has become.

It’s a gap Karolyi created from scratch since taking over for husband Bela in 2001. She’s molded the U.S. program into a ponytailed juggernaut. The 73-year-old is stepping down after the games. Watching from the front row of the Rio Olym-

pic Arena in a red jumpsuit, Karolyi watched perhaps her greatest team seem totally immune to the pressure.

Maybe that’s because for Hernandez, Biles, Gabby Douglas, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman, the meets are the fun part of their jobs. The toughest competitions happen in quiet at the regular training camps Karolyi carefully oversees. When the lights come on, it’s time to let loose.

Biles admitted there were nerves before Sunday’s preliminaries, but it hardly looked like it while the Americans posted the highest score by more than nine points. The only moment of tension Tuesday came early. When Hernandez was introduced to the crowd, Raisman nudged her and told her to wave, which the 16-year-old did with a toothy smile.

Barely five minutes later, the youngest member of Team USA was all business. Her double-twisting Yurchenko – basically a roundoff into a pair of twists – put the machine in motion. Raisman, who won three medals in London four years ago and seemed to be on the outside looking in as recently as this spring, followed with perhaps the finest vault of her long career. When Biles drilled her

Amanar and put up a 15.933 – the highest of the night – the U.S. already was on top of the leaderboard.

Yet it’s not just enough for Karolyi for her team to win. She stopped measuring the Americans against everyone else long ago. Karolyi wants there to be no doubt. And there wasn’t.

The U.S. went through 28 rotations over two days, just as the other seven teams that made the team final. Unlike the other seven, the Americans didn’t slip off uneven bars. They didn’t hop off balance beams. It’s that ability to avoid mistakes when it counts that’s as much a testament to Karolyi’s meticulous preparation as their dynamic and unparalleled gymnastics.

Although the gold never was in doubt, you wouldn’t have known about it by watching Karolyi. She clutched the white railing in front of her during Biles’ floor routine, nodding with approval with each gravity-escaping tumbling pass.

Russia, which wasn’t sure it would even be included in the games until just days before the opening ceremonies as the IOC and sport federations sorted out punishments for a national doping scandal, won silver. China took bronze.

Defending champion Serena Williams is out of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics after a stunning loss in the third round of singles.

The No. 1-seeded American was beaten, 6-4, 6-3, on Tuesday night by Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.

Williams made 37 unforced errors, including eight double-faults – five in one game.

She and sister Venus lost in the first round of doubles.

Got pie problems?

Expert Piechiatrist Kate McDermott is in Two pies – 1 cream, 1 fruit – are all summer

The Washington Post Kate McDermott, the Piechiatrist, once spent 2½ years testing just crust recipes and owns 98 pie pans.

She conducts workshops in her Port Angeles, Washington, home, which she has dubbed “Pie Cottage,” and holds frequent therapy sessions on Facebook Live. So, who better to turn to for piemaking advice – especially after pulling a somewhat soupy, seasonal-fruit mess from the oven?

Ever positive, the master says she prefers to think of such technical glitches as “challenges” rather than mistakes. Challenge accepted. We recently caught up with McDermott by phone; edited excerpts follow.

What is the most common mistake people make when baking pies?

8 to 10 servings (makes one 9-inch pie)

They overwork their dough. And in doing that, the fats melt. [More on that below.] Also, pay attention to that little voice in you that says, “I think I need to go look at the pie now,” because that may be the time when the pie is going to boil over and you’re going to save it.

What are your key techniques for making crust?

Especially in hot weather, it’s important to keep everything chilled.

Keep your flour chilled, keep the mixing bowl chilled; remember that butter starts melting at 59 degrees. If the fat is melting, stop and put the mixture back in the freezer or refrigerator. You never want the fats to get too hot while you’re making the dough. And chill the filled pie before you put it in the oven.

What is your favorite dough?

My favorite uses a combination of leaf lard and butter. But there are a lot of good pie dough recipes out there.

Use the one that works for you.

How do you avoid the dreaded soggy bottom?

Put a baking sheet or cookie sheet – some people even use a pizza stone – in the oven as it preheats, and place the filled pie directly on it. You want to give the well-chilled dough a blast of heat for at least 20 minutes to set the bottom crust. If you put it in at a moderate temperature, the crust will

just feel like it’s at the beach and start to relax and melt. My general rule is to bake for 20 minutes at 475 degrees F. and then 40 minutes at 375 degrees F.

How do you make sure your filling is set? What do you do if a fruit pie isn’t bubbling at the end of baking?

I have 98 pie pans. I use them all. I think the standard old glass ones are just fine – plus you can see if your pie is done on the bottom.

I love all the French [ceramic] dishes: Le Creuset, Staub, Emile Henry.

They tend to bake evenly and retain heat well. If you’re using a metal pan, make sure it’s not a bright, shiny one, because shiny deflects heat. If you’re

The tradition of pinning healthcare graduates originates with the nursing profession in 1860 when Florence Nightingale presented a lapel pin to her best students.

At the Kishwaukee College Radiologic Technology Pinning, each graduate was called by Jerry Fox, pinned individually by Marie Meadors and congratulated by Lori Damask, clinical instructor.

Each graduate then publicly recognized family and friends who had been

supportive of their efforts while a student and gave each a gerbera daisy in gratitude.

Graduates, family and friends then enjoyed a PowerPoint presentation created by the Class of 2016 followed by light refreshments in the KC Conference Center Dining Rooms.

The Sycamore Music Boosters Summer Music Camp Scholarship is awarded to students who attend a selected music camp over the summer.

The Kishwaukee College Continuing Education Department is offering online courses to help area high school students prepare for the SAT and ACT college entrance exams.

The course, offered through partnership with nationally recognized Ed2Go, will begin Aug. 17. The course also will be available later in the semester with start dates of Sept. 14 and Oct. 12.

The online SAT/ACT Test Preparation course will include two parts: Part 1 covers reading, writing, English and science and Part 2 covers math. The SAT – which is the entrance exam that will be administered at Illinois high schools this year – had a change in both the verbal and math questions in March 2016.

The online course is designed to prepare students for those changes.

The online course is an excellent option for students who want to get the best preparation for the SAT exam but also are involved in extracurricular activities or hold part-time jobs in addition to their studies. An online course allows students to log in and complete the course work at their own pace and on a day and time that is convenient for their busy schedules. The cost for the entire course is $174; the cost for students opting to register for only one of the available parts is $109.

28 Drug combination may lower cholesterol Dear Dr. K: Despite taking statins, my cholesterol hasn’t dropped as low as my doctor would like. I figured he’d put me on the new PCSK9 inhibitors. Instead, he suggested I stay on my statin, but also take another drug called ezetimibe. What can you tell me about this combination?

Dear Reader: From what you say, I assume your doctor has used the highest dose of the most potent statins before giving up on those drugs. There are very few people whose cholesterol does not drop substantially on statins alone.

However, if your cholesterol still is not low enough despite maximizing statin treatment, then you do need something else. The cholesterol-lowering drugs known as PCSK9 inhibitors roared onto the market last year. Thanks to their impressive performance in clinical trials – in one year, they lowered LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels by 40 to 60 percent – doctors and patients alike greeted them with excitement. But these drugs aren’t for everyone.

Why? One big reason is cost. PCSK9 inhibitors cost an estimated $14,600 a year. Did I just hear you gulp? I thought so. By contrast, most statins are available as generics. They can cost as little as $4 a month through discount programs at large chain stores.

Moreover, the statins have been proven to decrease actual heart attacks and strokes. Doctors do not know yet whether the PCSK9 inhibitors ultimately will do the same. Finally, PCSK9 inhibitors are given by injection every two to four weeks, whereas statins are pills.

But when statins alone do not lower LDL cholesterol adequately, there are other options than the PCSK9 inhibitors.

One alternative is ezetimibe (Zetia).

This drug blocks cholesterol in food from crossing the intestinal wall and getting into

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the bloodstream. It can lower LDL levels by roughly 15 to 20 percent when used alone. And when added to statins, it can lower cholesterol further. Ezetimibe has an excellent safety record and generally is well tolerated.

One large study compared adding ezetimibe to the statin simvastatin (the combination found in the drug Vytorin) to using one of the statin drugs (simvastatin) alone. The combination was more effective in preventing heart attacks and strokes.

The study included more than 18,000 people who were recovering from heart attacks. After six years, LDL levels in the ezetimibe-plus-simvastatin group dropped considerably lower than in the group taking just simvastatin. More important, comparing a theoretical group of 100,000 people taking the combined drugs to a group of the same size taking just the simvastatin, 2,000 more people taking just simvastatin would have had another heart attack or a stroke.

Ezetimibe works when added to any statin. If the combination of a statin plus ezetimibe doesn’t work for you, then your doctor may consider a PCSK9 inhibitor.

Not all insurance companies pay for PCSK9 inhibitors. Those that do need proof from your doctor that every other way to lower your cholesterol has not produced adequate results. Hopefully, adding ezetimibe will do the trick. I’ll bet it will.

South had a minimum two-heart response, but he was right not to make a negative double with a singleton spade, and he was too strong to pass.

North, knowing his partner had at least five hearts, jumped to game.

First, East should check the points -- a theme of all deals. Dummy has 19, East holds 11, and South promised 10. So, West’s main job is to avoid reneging!

Second, East can see only two defensive tricks: his aces. He must hope partner has led a singleton.

Third, East wins with his club ace and carefully returns the jack, his highest-remaining club being a suit-preference signal for spades, the higher-ranking of the other two side suits. West ruffs the trick and shifts to a spade. Now East must complete his job by winning with the ace and leading a low club. When West ruffs with his second heart, it uppercuts the dummy and promotes a trump trick for East’s queen -- the fourth defensive trick.
