Summertime, and the living isn’t easy

American workers have been taking less and less vacation over the past 15 years. A study by Project: Time Off found that in 2015, more than half of American workers left vacation time unused.

If you are among this unlucky group, consider some tips on why you should take a break and how to do it.

• RECOGNIZE THE PERKS: Vacation is a chance to rest your mind and your body from the demands of work.

Doug Walker, manager of HR Services at Insperity, said these psychological and physiological perks can help an employee feel refreshed and more inspired at work and at home.

However, he is quick to point out that a stressful vacation – such as one filled with work emails – may end up leaving a worker depleted.

He suggests taking a real break that has no work duties or very limited ones, and allows for some tranquility.

“It’s in stillness that life’s sediment settles and the murkiness becomes clear,” Walker said.

• CONSIDER THE HURDLE: The United States is the only developed country that does not require employers to provide vacation time, according to the Center for Economic and Policy Research. But workers often are en-

titled to days off that they simply aren’t taking.

Project: Time Off found 658 million days went unused last year among those surveyed, the highest ever since the travel industry group began measuring it. Of those, 222 million days are simply lost – they are days that cannot be rolled over, paid out or banked for any other benefit.

Employees cite a variety of reasons for forgoing vacation time – they worry about returning to a mountain of work or feel no one else can do their job. Some cannot afford it, and others simply want to show their complete dedication.

But Walker points out there that are very few true emergencies at work and that, in most cases, someone else can handle it, or a problem that arises can wait till you return.

And taking a break can make you a better worker.

“It’s important to remind yourself of that,” Walker said.

• WALK THE WALK: If you are the boss, the pressure is on you to take a break.

By actually taking vacation, you signal to employees that it’s OK to do so, too. Communicate with them about vacation policies and encourage them to take time off as needed.

“A company’s success is all about the degree to which your employees are engaged and effective,” Walker said. “If they aren’t engaged because they are burnt out or they aren’t effective because they are burnt out, they need a break.”

Ellwood House mixes ice cream social with art fair

By AIMEE BARROWS news@dailychroncile.com DeKALB – It’s been an August tradition in DeKalb for 47 years. The Ellwood House Museum hosted its annual ice cream social Sunday, and hundreds of folks descended on the lawn to enjoy art, music and, of course, ice cream.

Culver’s Restaurant provided the ice cream, the Kishwaukee Valley Art League provided the art and artists, and Patchouli Ballet Folklorico Monarcas and the DeKalb Municipal Band provided the entertainment on the summer day.

Brian Reis, executive director of the Ellwood House Museum, said the ice cream social is a historic event and has been a community tradition for decades.

This year, the event featured more kids’ art activities, which he said made it more family-friendly.

“People really like this event, and it’s good for families,” he said. “This is a way to get them involved with the museum.

We want to engage visitors with authentic examples of ingenuity and architecture by showing the Ellwood mansion, gardens and museum campus.”

More than 20 KVAL artists from set up booths to showcase jewelry, wood work, glass art, photography, pottery and paintings. KVAL President Larry Bond said this is the first year the group has sponsored projects for kids. Visitors were able to paint rocks, do a painting or make a butterfly.

“This is part of our give-back program. We’re trying to instill art in the community,” he said. “Art is important for everybody. Our motto is, ‘Art feeds the soul.’ ” This is the third year the ice cream social and Ellwood House Art Fair have been combined and held on the same day. Rachel Xidis, Ellwood House board member, said it gives people the opportunity to take advantage of both events.

“Having the artists here generates more interest and makes it more vibrant,” she said. “The art fair used to be on the July 4th weekend, and that is a rough weekend because there are so many events going on. So by combining, we’re pulling a bigger audience. We have a smaller number of vendors, but very high-quality art.”

Marjorie Baie was selling her upcycled jewelry. She said she loves coming to this show each year and thinks combining the two events was a good idea because it “adds an extra element” to the

“This is a nice gathering that people come to, with the music and the ice cream,” the Sycamore artist said. “I get to see a lot of familiar faces every year, and this show is always so much fun.

People know the vendors that will be here and come specifically for them.”

Sarah Douglas of DeKalb said she comes to the show every year for the art.

She was enjoying a wood kaleidoscope made by artist David Smith of Sycamore.

“This is just exquisitely done. It’s absolutely beautiful,” she said. “This show has some of the finest art selection around.”

Michelle Helgeson and her daughter Holly, 12, came from Kingston for the

crafts and the ice cream.

“I just like to do anything outside.

We’re checking out the vendors, listening to music – it’s all fun. We might tour the house this time. It’s such a nice day,” she said.

Brandy Himmelmann of DeKalb and her son, Tyler Mrozek, 10, originally came to the museum to hunt for Pokemon, but they were pleasantly surprised to find the ice cream social. The two were making flower pots in the Ellwood House Visitor’s Center.

“We’re having a blast. I’m glad we stumbled upon this. We already had some ice cream, and this is just a wonderful day,” she said.

The event also drew visitors from outside of DeKalb County. Denise and Marc

Donatelle of Bartlett were celebrating their seventh wedding anniversary at the ice cream social. Denise is a Northern Illinois University alum and wanted to bring her husband, who never had seen the Ellwood House, to the event.

“I love the Ellwood House – it’s part of my youth. It reminds me of my 20s,” she said. “This is a nice way to spend our anniversary, and we’re having a ball.”

Dee Martin of Orland Park came with her daughter and grandsons. This was their first time at the Ellwood House, and Martin said they were having a great time.

“This is just a nice area, with lots of activities for the kids,” she said. “This is a good thing to do on a beautiful Sunday.”

Yellow-flowered plant’s sap can irritate skin; undisturbed, it’s harmless

By BEN DRAPER bdraper@shawmedia.com Photos of a yellow-flowered plant that can cause severe burns have circulated social media this summer.

The offending plant – the potentially invasive wild parsnip – can be found in every county in Illinois, including DeKalb County.

Richard Hentschel, the University of Illinois Extension Service horticulture educator for DuPage, Kane and Kendall counties, said that wild parsnip has been around a long time, and most likely was brought over by early settlers coming to North America as a food plant. The root of the wild parsnip plant is edible, just like the domestic variety.

“We seem to see a greater presence of wild parsnip than we have had in the past, and that can be attributed to our weather pattern – years where we have had hot and dry weather with excessive rains in the spring,” Hentschel said. “It has been able to flourish where other competitive weeds have not been, so it’s had a greater chance to establish itself.”

Hentschel said wild parsnip is most likely to be found in areas that are less maintained on a regular basis.

“It used to be in out-of-the-way, undisturbed areas away from mankind,” Hentschel said. “Now that I know what it looks like, I see it everywhere: roadsides, edges of woods – it’ll colonize an area of a field. So folks are going to likely run into it.”

Hentschel said the plant poses a risk at any stage of its development.

Being able to identify wild parsnip as a young plant is as important as identifying an adult plant.

According to the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission, the young plant forms a basal rosette, and its leaves are alternate, pinnately compound – or arranged on either side of the stem – and branched with saw-toothed edges. The mature plant’s large yellow flowers make it more easily identifiable.

“If you’re mowing the ditch bank at the farm, or clearing an area in your back lot, you could easily get into it without knowing it if you didn’t recognize it as a younger plant. It’s very readily identifiable as a mature plant because it’s 4 to 5 feet tall,” Hentschel said.

Standing next to the plant will not give an individual burning blisters.

A mature wild parsnip plant can be easily identified by its yellow flowers. University of Illinois Extension Service horticulture educator Richard Hentschel suggested that being able to identify what the wild parsnip looks like as a young plant is important, because the sap in a juvenile plant still can cause a painful reaction.

But the combination of the sap on one’s skin combined with UV light exposure causes phytophotodermatitis, a condition with symptoms akin to a severe sunburn, according to an article by Christopher Enroth on the University of Illinois Extension website.

Wild parsnip plants do not seem any more prevalent along local roadways this year, said Nathan Schwartz, DeKalb County highway engineer.

“We see it every year,” Schwartz said. “We have not noticed that this year is particularly bad or any worse than any other year. Most of the roadsides have the nice white flowers, the Queen Anne’s lace, that’s noticeable.”

Schwartz said social media attention of late had made people more aware about the plant. He said the county highway department, which is responsible for mowing the right of way along county highways, does mow down wild parsnip and other weeds.

Those who mow are advised to wear long pants, Schwartz said.

Schwartz said the county also has

a noxious-weed spraying program, where workers apply herbicide along guardrails and in other areas to keep down the population of thistles and other nuisance plants.

“We don’t see a lot of people walking around in the ditches anyway,” Schwartz said, “ but if you’re walking around in nature, you should know which weeds to avoid.”

In Kendall County, Northern Illinois University student Nick Gillette is working as an intern with the highway department, documenting locations of invasive species along county roadways.

Gillette said he’s run into a lot of wild parsnip patches.

“It is very prolific in the area – in Kendall County and other counties.

It’s all over the place ...,” he said. “It’s [more prevalent] in areas it can get sunlight.”

Awareness, Hentschel said, is the key for those looking to avoid the plants’ burn.

“Over the years, a large percentage

of the population can now recognize poison ivy, because we were taught [how to identify it], and exposed to it,” Hentschel said. “We have not been taught about wild parsnip yet, so we don’t recognize it as troublesome. There hasn’t been enough of it to cause a level of concern until now.”

Hentschel said that if someone has identified wild parsnip, they should take a shovel or long-handled pruners and push them in just beneath the soil at the base of the plant. Cut there, and let it lie and dry off naturally, and be sure to clean the tools carefully. Someone who knows they will be dealing with wild parsnip during the day should wear rubber gloves and a long-sleeve shirt.

Because the reaction occurs in relation to sunlight, he also recommended working on the plant at dusk or dark.

“Don’t mow it; don’t weed-whack it,” he said. “Don’t break tissue [on the plant].”

OBITUARIES JEAN MARIE ADAMS Born: Aug. 29, 1926 Died: July 28, 2016

Jean Marie (Derrick) Adams, 89, passed away Thursday, July 28, at the Silverado Memory Care Community in Lake Zurich.

She was born in Oswestry, Wales, in the United Kingdom, on Aug. 29, 1926; the youngest of four children to parents, Jonathan and Harriet Derrick. During World War II, she met the love of her life, Robert Adams, while he was stationed near her village of Chirk, Wales. About 18 months after the war ended, she was able to gain passage on a shipping vessel to come to the U.S. and begin her new life with Bob. They were married Aug. 23, 1947, and remained together until his death in April 2000. Jean worked for the Monsanto Corporation in the U.K. during and shortly after the war.

Once in the U.S., she began her married life as a homemaker, later working for Illinois Bell, and eventually spending 12 years as a librarian at McHenry West High School, retiring in 1991. She and Bob lived in Elgin and New Orleans, before ultimately settling in McHenry. Jean was a very proud woman; the epitome of a “proper British lady.” She was always impeccably dressed, usually with a purse to match. She never had a hair out of place, even while driving with the top down on her 1967 Mustang, “Old Bess.”

She loved to hunt for bargains while shopping, and always got a real thrill when she found one.

She enjoyed singing, reading, doing crossword puzzles, watching British television shows, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her three children, Cynthia (David) Karls of McHenry, Jill (Mark) Voboril of Huntington Beach, CA, and Brian (Amanda) Adams of DeKalb, IL; her seven grandchildren, Meredith (Jim) Tuttle, Jonathan Frett, Alyson, Melissa, and A.J. Voboril, and Maximilian and Cindy Rose Adams; her two great-grandchildren, Courtney (Brett) MacDonald and James (Jaci) Tuttle, and three great-great-grandchildren, Kylie, Mason and Emma.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings; her husband, Robert; and her sonin-law, Ted Frett.

Friends and neighbors may gather from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10,

2016, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 3500 W. Washington, McHenry, IL 60050. A Mass celebrating her life will take place at 11 a.m.

Burial will be private for the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, The Alzheimer’s Association or The Dementia Society of America.

Soon after they moved to Sitka, Alaska, where Charles served as commissioned officer for the Department of Public Health, supporting United States government care of veterans, active duty soldiers and their respective families. It was there that they adopted their first child, Ann Janet, in 1962. Their travels would take them to New Hampshire and Maryland before settling in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was in Ann Arbor, where they adopted Richard Allan in 1972. Marian was a kindergarten school teacher in the Ann Arbor school system where she worked in the years between 1966 and 1974. Marian loved dance figure skating, she and Charles enjoyed many hours as a couple dancing on ice. A lifelong devoted lover of music, Marian attended symphony and classical concerts. She was a board member of the Volunteer Council of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and later volunteered for the Traverse City Symphony.

She resided in Dearborn, Michigan, Traverse City, Michigan, and West Lake, Ohio, before moving to her residence in DeKalb.

Marian is survived by her children, Ann Klevgard Olender (Andy Olender) of Dexter, Michigan, and Richard Allan Klevgard (Diane Cleary Klevgard); and her grandsons, Charles Maxwell and Samuel James of Oak Park, Illinois.

Marian’s life journey was one of joy and celebration, she will be remembered for her smile and laughter.

She also very much enjoyed baking, gardening, crafts and entertaining.

Veronica is survived by four sons, Charles (Karen) Hart of Shabbona, Thomas (Jane) Hart of Creston, Loras (Bev) Hart of LeClaire, Iowa, and Dale (Rebecca) Hart of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Anita (Tracy) Emrich of Chillicothe, IL; a brother-in-law, Bob Hart of DeKalb; sisterin-law, Sherri Gavin of Plano; 17 grandchildren,     15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, –   nephews and cousins.

Hello, my name is Annie. I was one of the only dogs not to be adopted at the Clear the Shelter event and I’m very sad about it. I was really hoping it would be my lucky day. I’m a sweet, smart girl. I already know some basic commands such as sit, stay, down and come and I’d like to learn more. I do need to go into a home with no other animals as I’m not a fan of everyone I meet. I’m sure you’re not a fan of everyone you meet either! And I have a bit of separation anxiety so would like a home where someone isn’t gone too much. I still have an occasional accident in the house from time to time and could use some training and a good set schedule to help with that. And I can be talkative at times too. LOCAL BRIEFS Rollover crash near Virgil leaves 1 dead

VIRGIL – A St. Charles man was killed and a Maple Park man was seriously injured in a crash early Saturday on Route 64 in Kane County, just east of the DeKalb County line.

According to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, David Drewes, 35, of St. Charles, was killed when the Volkswagen Tiguan SUV he was riding in went off the road and rolled over along Route 64 near Fabris Road.

The crash, which took place around 2:10 a.m., occurred when the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve on Route 64, police said.

Police said Drewes and the driver, Sean Tardy, 39, of Maple Park, were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicle in the crash. Paramedics from the Maple Park Fire Department took Tardy to Kishwaukee Hospital, and he later was flown to Rockford Memorial Hospital, according to the news release.

A passenger in the backseat, Kristie Drewes, 36, of Maple Park, was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Police said Kristie Drewes and Sean Tardy are a recently married couple, and David Drewes, the person killed, is Kristie’s brother.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the crash, and police said they have not ruled out whether alcohol played a role. No citations have been issued in connection

with the incident.

1 killed when motorcycle collides with truck near Sycamore

SYCAMORE – A motorcyclist from Kingston was killed and his passenger was seriously injured when their bike collided with a pickup truck Saturday.

According to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Nathan T. Pasholk, 32, of the 300 block of south First Street, was killed in the crash, which occurred about 5 p.m. in the 8800 block of Old State Road west of Sycamore.

A passenger on the motorcycle, Kathleen M. Brust, 29, of the 300 block of south Fourth Street in Kirkland, was flown by helicopter from the scene to OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford, police said.

Police said Pasholk and Brust were headed east on Old State Road when a westbound Chevrolet pickup driven by Elena M. Halverson, 17, of the 13000 block of Harter Road, DeKalb, began to turn into a driveway. The motorcycle hit the front of the truck as it turned, according to the release.

Halverson suffered minor injuries in the crash and was treated at and released from Kishwaukee Hospital, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office; no citations have been issued.

Admission to Aug. 11’s preview night is $5 – half the normal admission – and fair officials have gussied it up with grandstand entertainment and a free concert by some of the 1985 champion Chicago Bears.

The gate cost for Aug. 12-20 is $10, up from $7 last year. But seniors pay the same $3 fee, and children to age 12 are free. Previously, kids had to be five or younger to get in without charge.

“In today’s fiscal climate, it’s very difficult to give something away for free,” state fair manager Kevin Gordon said of the new preview-night charge. Admission also will be $5 on the last day of the fair, Aug. 21.

Man is accused of taking video of sleeping woman

PEORIA – A judge has ordered a South Peoria man held on $100,000 bond for allegedly breaking into a woman’s house, videotaping her while she slept and then posting the video on her Facebook page.

The Peoria Journal Star reported that prosecutors sought a bond less than half that high for 25-year-old Olive Ochoa, but Peoria County

Circuit Judge Kevin Lyons set the higher amount Friday after Ochoa told him he wanted to return to Chicago.

Ochoa faces one count of residential burglary in the July 30 incident.

Prosecutor Steve Pattelli told Lyons that the victim recognized Ochoa on the video because, at some point, the camera on the phone he was using switched from taking video of her to showing him inside her bedroom.

Online court records showed Ochoa had no attorney.

Couple charged with helping relative get away after shooting

QUINCY – The father and stepmother of a man convicted in the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy face obstruction of justice charges after a decision by prosecutors in western Illinois.

Adams County State’s Attorney Jon Barnard refiled charges Friday against 42-year-old Stefan K. Crider Jr. and 40-yearold Julia A. Crider. Barnard had dropped similar charges last year to focus on the trial of Steson L. Crider.

A jury found Steson Crider guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Ray Humphrey Jr. Steson Crider was sentenced to 65 years in prison.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reported that Stefan and Julia Crider have a court hearing Aug. 25.

Prosecutors said the Criders provided money and a vehicle to help Steson Crider leave the state after the March 2015 shooting on Quincy’s northwest side.

Former East Peoria football coach convicted of theft

PEKIN – A former East Peoria

Community High School football coach is to be sentenced next month after a judge found him guilty of stealing thousands of dollars meant for the students and the team.

The Pekin Daily Times reported that Tazewell County Judge Paul Gilfillan on Friday found 38-year-old Doug Martin guilty of four counts of felony theft.

Martin testified that he spent all of the money on team expenses and only put it in a private bank account because it was more convenient than putting it into the team’s student activity fund.

Tazewell County Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Holly said he didn’t believe that Martin spent the money on the team – and added that even if Martin did, he didn’t have the right to decide where to spend school money.

But even as his allies speak of lessons the political newcomer has learned, two of his staunchest Republican critics warn that he could be heading for losses in a pair of battleground states.

Trump is set to deliver an economic speech Monday to the prestigious Detroit Economic Club in his effort to step past his spats over the past 10 days with the Muslim-American parents of a slain Army captain and the leaders of a Republican Party he has promised to unite.

IS claims Belgium machete attack that wounded 2 policewomen

By JOHN–THOR DAHLBURG and MAAMOUN YOUSSEF The Associated Press BRUSSELS – The Islamic State group Sunday claimed responsibility for a weekend machete attack that wounded two policewomen in the Belgian city of Charleroi, calling it an act of reprisal carried out by one of its “soldiers.”

Belgian prosecutors identified the machete-wielding assailant as a 33-yearold Algerian known to police for criminal offenses, but not for extremist acts.

Belgian media reported that he was in the country illegally, despite two separate orders being issued for him to leave.

The government didn’t immediately confirm the reports.

The attack on Saturday afternoon is being treated as a terrorist incident, notably because the man shouted “Allahu akbar!” – Arabic for “God is great” – as he slashed at the officers outside Charleroi’s main police station, Prime Minister Charles Michel said.

The assailant, shot by a third officer, died later in a hospital. A statement by the IS-affiliated Aamaq News Agency, posted Sunday on an IS-linked Twitter

account, said the attack on the policewomen was in response to the “Crusader coalition’s” military campaign against IS and its self-declared caliphate in Iraq and Syria.

Belgium, a longtime U.S. ally, is a member of the American-led coalition combating IS, and has supplied warplanes to participate in anti-IS operations.

The Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office said the attacker, who it identified only as K.B., had lived in Belgium since 2012.

The office said two police searches were carried out overnight in the southern Belgian city, but that no further information about the investigation would be made public.

Both policewomen were “severely injured in the face and neck” in the attack, the federal prosecutors’ statement said.

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran executed a nuclear scientist convicted of spying for the United States, an official said Sunday, acknowledging for the first time that the nation secretly detained and tried a man who was once heralded as a hero.

He was hanged the same week that Tehran executed a group of militants, a year after Iran agreed to a landmark accord to limit uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Amiri first vanished in 2009 while on a religious pilgrimage to Muslim holy sites in Saudi Arabia. A year later, he reappeared in a series of contradictory online videos filmed in the U.S. He then walked into the Iranian-interests section at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington and demanded to be sent home.

In interviews, he described being kidnapped and held against his will by Saudi and American spies. U.S. officials

said he was to receive millions of dollars for his help in understanding Iran’s nuclear program.

Iranian judiciary spokesman Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejehi said Amiri “had access to the country’s secret and classified information” and “had been linked to our hostile and No. 1 enemy, America, the Great Satan.”

The spokesman told journalists that Amiri had been tried in a death-penalty case that was upheld by an appeals court.

He did not explain why authorities never announced the conviction, though he said Amiri had access to lawyers.

News about Amiri, born in 1977, has been scant since his return to Iran. Last year, his father told the BBC’s Farsi-language service that his son had been held at a secret site. Ejehi said Amiri’s family mistakenly believed he received a 10-year prison sentence.

On Tuesday, Iran announced it had executed a number of criminals, describing them mainly as militants from the country’s Kurdish minority. Then an obituary notice for Amiri circulated in his hometown of Kermanshah, a city some 310 miles southwest of Tehran, according to the Iranian pro-reform daily newspaper Shargh.

Put right to vote in Constitution There will not be a national election this fall – not really. Instead, we will have 50 state elections where officials in more than 3,000 counties administer a patchwork of different rules and ballots.

And if applying those rules keeps citizens from casting their votes, they will have very little recourse with the federal government. That’s because there is no constitutional right to vote.

That comes as a surprise to most Americans, but a careful look at the Constitution reveals that it is the states that are charged with selecting electors for the Electoral College, and there is no direction on how those selections are made. It’s a matter of states’ rights, not citizens’ rights and states for the most part get to decide what’s fair. Amendments prohibit people being denied the ability to vote based on their race (the 15th), sex (20th) and age (28th) but there is no established right to vote for all citizens that can be protected by federal oversight.

It’s time to pass a constitutional amendment that would establish such a right, to protect individuals and ensure the integrity of our elections.

A bill to start the process is now before Congress.

House Joint Resolution 25, sponsored by Reps. Keith Ellison, D-Minnesota, and Mark Pocan, D-Wisconsin, would do two things: Establish a fundamental right for every citizen who is of age to participate in every election in the jurisdiction where they live, and give Congress the authority to pass legislation that would enforce that right.

Local control is good for some things, but not for elections. Every year we hear about some jurisdiction where voters wait in outrageous lines, find their names purged from lists or are otherwise prevented from casting a ballot.

There are discrepancies among the states. Some states require voters to have a photo ID before they can vote. Some states require registration months in advance. Some states allow early voting with mail-in ballots.

Felons can be banned from voting for life in 10 states; while on probation or parole in 24 states; and while incarcerated in 14 others. In Maine and Vermont there are no restrictions at all and felons can vote even while they are still in prison. Civil rights activist Jesse Jackson called it “a separate but unequal system” in a July 28 letter to the editor published in The New York Times.

In the landmark case Bush v. Gore, which decided the 2000 presidential election, the majority found that “The individual citizen has no federal constitutional right to vote for electors for the President of the United States unless and until the state legislature chooses a statewide election as the means to implement its power to appoint members of the Electoral College.”

It’s time that individual citizen acquired that right.

We urge Maine’s congressional delegation to move this amendment forward and send it back to the states for ratification.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker lowed qualified citizens to register and vote on the same day. And, most notoriously, they instigated a requirement for certain kinds of photo IDs, usually a driver’s license. As many researchers have noted, black Americans are less likely to own cars and, therefore, less likely to possess a driver’s license.

Happily, though, this long and un-American campaign against the universal franchise may finally be losing steam. In the last month, federal courts have ruled against restrictive voting laws in five states. While the Republican Party has long insisted its crusade for stringent voting laws is intended to protect against voter fraud, federal courts are beginning to see restrictions for what they are: an effort to turn back the clock to a time when few black or brown citizens were able to vote.

In North Carolina, for example, a federal court ruling stated that the GOP-led legislature’s new voting restrictions “target African-Americans with almost surgical precision.” Republican leaders looked at data in order to ferret out which demographic groups

were more likely to be represented in certain voting patterns. When their research showed, for example, that black voters were more likely to use the two convenient Sunday voting days, they cut one of those out.

As the court noted, the state said so in its own testimony: “The State then elaborated on its justification, explaining that “counties with Sunday voting in 2014 were disproportionately black” and “disproportionately Democratic.”

But, then, that wasn’t the first time that Republicans have let slip their actual intent.

Back in April, a Wisconsin GOP congressman was refreshingly honest when asked whether he thought the Republican presidential nominee could carry his state, which has voted Democratic in presidential elections since 1984.

“Now we have photo ID, and I think photo ID is gonna make a little bit of a difference,” replied Rep. Glenn Grothman.

As it turns out, a federal court recognized that possibility as well and struck down portions of Wisconsin’s law (though the voter ID requirement remains largely intact). “The Wisconsin experience demonstrates that a preoccupation with mostly phantom election fraud leads to real incidents

of disenfranchisement. ... To put it bluntly, Wisconsin’s strict version of voter ID law is a cure worse than the disease,” wrote U.S. District Judge James Peterson.

The Founding Fathers, national myths notwithstanding, didn’t actually embrace the concept of a broad franchise. They had a more restrictive construction in mind. But over generations, the nation has lived up to its ideals, expanding the right to vote to include all citizens over the age of 18.

That hasn’t been an easy journey. It has taken a civil war, several amendments to the U.S. Constitution and a half-century civil rights struggle. The mighty and privileged don’t share power easily. They understood that a universal franchise would upend the status quo.

And so it has. Barack Obama’s victories were powered by a coalition that included record numbers of voters of color, African-American, Latino, Asian-American. That’s what makes the universal franchise such a powerful weapon – and so dangerous to those who don’t really believe in democracy.

Democrats see Trump sinking other Republicans in wave election

By ALBERT HUNT Bloomberg View In 1980, Democratic pollster Peter Hart warned Gaylord Nelson, Wisconsin’s champion vote-getter as governor and senator, that he was going to lose. Hart saw a Republican wave coming. Ronald Reagan would defeat President Jimmy Carter and carry other GOP candidates to victory as well.

The opposite of the wave effect in elections is the so-called Eisenhower jacket, a term coined by Democrats predicting that the immensely popular Ike wouldn’t have the coat-tails to help other Republicans down the ballot.

With three months to go in the 2016 race, there is a presumption among most Democrats and more than a few Republicans that Hillary Clinton is headed to a decisive victory. Democrats are talking about a possible wave, while Republicans see a no-coattails election, particularly since Clinton herself remains unpopular.

Of course, the race could change.

Trump could get his act together, or there could be a crisis or a Clinton contretemps.

Most wave elections, such as the Democrats’ victories in 2006 and Republican gains in 2010 are in non-presidential years. Exceptions were in 1964, when Lyndon Johnson trounced Barry Goldwater, and in 1980.

An encouraging note for Republicans: The only time in the modern era that an incumbent party ran successfully for a third presidential term, 1988, the makeup of Congress remained virtually the same.

But even a mini-wave could affect the Senate, where 24 of the 34 seats up for election are held by Republicans.

The Democrats need a net gain of at least four seats to take control.

It might take a tsunami to capture 30 seats and win the House. All 435 seats may be in play, but with redistricting and population patterns, Democrats have to win the overall vote by seven percentage points to take it back, David Wasserman of the Cook Political Report estimates. The

latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll showed Democrats with a four-point advantage in the general matchup.

Some Republicans say that differentiating their congressional candidates from the nominee may not be hard. “One great thing for many Republican candidates is that Donald Trump is unusual – he’s not a generic Republican,” says Kristen Soltis Anderson, a Republican pollster. “In a state like Ohio, voters will be able to distinguish between Trump and Rob Portman.” Sen. Portman is locked in a tight race.

Some endangered Senate incumbents like Mark Kirk of Illinois have flatly declared they won’t vote for Trump. Most others, however, are trying to straddle to avoid offending the fervent Trump followers, while not alienating more independent-minded centrists. New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte said she’s supporting Trump but isn’t endorsing him. If he comes to her state, she’ll be AWOL. Few Republicans are suffering as much as Arizona’s John McCain.

Privately he has contempt for Trump.

But the senator faces a right-wing primary challenge this month when many Trump supporters will turn out. Thus even when Trump took a shot at him too last week, McCain held his fire and reiterated that he always supports the party nominee.

Several recent polls, however, might widen cracks in this delicate façade. Clinton has opened up huge leads in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania amid signs Trump was dragging down incumbent senators.

Republican strategists say a fivepoint Clinton victory in these states is survivable for down-ballot candidates. Anything more, particularly if her margin hits double digits, might mean curtains.

Democrats today are more optimistic that these wider margins are possible, noting that in this polarized environment, ticket-splitting is less prevalent. And waves, as Gaylord Nelson discovered in 1980, usually break late.

The universal franchise is a radical idea – and a relatively new one in human history. The proposition that each man or woman is given equal footing at the ballot box, whether rich or poor, brilliant or simple, black, white or brown, broke with a sturdy convention in human affairs: that the rich and powerful should rule or, at the very least, choose the rulers.

That idea of a universal franchise still chafes some in power, though; it still troubles those who believe their proper role among the chosen is threatened when all people are allowed to cast a vote. It has clearly bothered some Republican politicians, who have spent the last decade trying to reverse one of the most significant accomplishments of the civil rights era: the expanded franchise.

Around the country, GOP-led legislatures have found inventive ways to make it more difficult to vote, in some cases reversing innovations they had approved one or two years before.

They were immeasurably assisted by a 2013 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, which, dominated by its right wing, tore the heart out of the Voting Rights Act. With that assist, legislatures cut back on days for early voting. They ended convenient regulations that al-

The cast is made up of mostly newcomers to Stage Coach, but all bring great experience and talent to the stage. The Narrator, who ties all of the action together, is played by Steve Becker, who recently moved from Indiana and brings years of experience in musical theater with him.

The Witch is played by Elenia Dokos, who is appearing in her first show since college. The Baker and his Wife are portrayed by Jun Espiritu and Nika Morton.

Huskies open up training camp practicing without pads

By JESSE SEVERSON jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The sound of coaches yelling out instructions, quarterbacks barking out their cadences and music blasting from the PA system filled the air in Huskie Stadium.

Football is back at Northern Illinois.

The Huskies opened up their twoweek training camp on a muggy Sunday afternoon without pads – the real football will have to wait until the first full-pads practice Thursday.

“It’s always exciting when football season starts and camp starts,” junior safety Brandon Mayes said. “Everybody’s excited because we’ve been waiting since last season to get back on the field. It’s good to come out here and be around the team and play football.”

NIU coach Rod Carey said he was

happy with the energy and effort of the team in the first practice of the fall, but that there were “a lot of mistakes we have to clean up.”

Mayes said a major part about the high-speed, nonpad practices is getting in as many repetitions as possible and perfecting little things. Senior offensive lineman Levon Myers echoed Carey, saying the energy was high in the first day – although he’s looking forward to Thursday’s full-pads practice.

“I hate not being able to hit, especially in the last period there (team drills), we just had to take ‘two steps’ and stop our feet,” Myers said. “You really want to tee off on the D-linemen.”

The first practice also featured a new drill for the defensive linemen.

When she decided that she wanted to continue to play, Marcinkowski said she uploaded her highlights to a recruiting website and got word from three different schools – however, two of them weren’t a right fit. With only one team left – Waldorf – she finally signed with the Warriors on Tuesday.

“I feel like I went out on a good note with Kishwaukee,” she said. “It’s not what I had planned, as far as the catching, but if that would have been my last season ever, I would have been happy with it.”

While the players still worked out in the summer, there was another dynamic to having an actual practice.

Myers said that he’s working on technique, especially since practices come with something different from the workouts.

“We’ve been working as a group all summer on things, but everything changes when we put our knee braces on, our helmets on, our pads on, you just have to adjust yourself a little bit because you’re 15 pounds heavier with all your gear and stuff,” Myers said. “There’s a little bit of an adjustment.”

Carey said there still are positional battles all over the field – except for emphatically stating at the Huskies’ media day Aug. 1 in Chicago that Drew Hare is the starting quarterback.

Former Sycamore and Kishwaukee College softball player McKenna Marcinkowski figured she was hanging up the cleats.

Then she started coaching youth softball.

The renewed passion has now got her heading to Waldorf University to continue her playing days this upcoming season.

“I started coaching third- and fourth-graders just in the park district league, and they made me realize how

much that I missed it,” Marcinkowski said. “It was just good to be around the game.”

She joins a Warriors team that went 18-29 overall and 10-14 in conference in coach Lexy Determan’s first year with the program. Waldorf University is an NAIA school located in Forest Park, Iowa.

Because of injuries last year for the Kougars, Marcinkowski had to play both pitcher and catcher during the season despite not catching since she was in eighth grade.

Ichiro joins 3,000-hit club The ASSOCIATED PRESS DENVER –Ichiro Suzuki tripled off the wall for his 3,000th career hit in the major leagues Sunday, becoming the 30th player to reach the milestone.

The 42-year-old Marlins outfielder did it in the seventh inning against Colorado at Coors Field. He joined Paul Molitor as the only players whose 3,000th hit was a triple.

Miami players came out of the dugout to congratulate Suzuki, and he waved his helmet to acknowledge the cheers.

Hitting coach Barry Bonds gave him a hug as the celebration at third base ended, and Suzuki got another round of applause when he scored on Jeff Mathis’ single, as well as a hug from manager Don Mattingly.

CHICAGO – The White Sox have had a roller-coaster season, and James Shields has experienced as many sudden drops as anyone.

Shields allowed four home runs Sunday before being pulled in the second inning, and the Sox lost to the Baltimore Orioles, 10-2. Baltimore’s Manny Machado became the second player in major league history to homer in the first, second and third innings, driving in a career-high seven runs.

“Today I was pretty much bad all around,” Shields said. “I wasn’t hitting my spots. I was leaving the ball over the plate, and they were capitalizing on it. You can’t do that against this team.”

Machado hit a two-run homer in the first and a three-run shot in the second off Shields, who got only four outs.

NEW YORK – Ready or not, Alex Rodriguez will play his final game in pinstripes this week.

One of the most prolific hitters and polarizing figures in baseball history, the slumping slugger plans to take his final turn at-bat with the New York Yankees on Friday night and then become a special adviser and instructor with the team next year.

A-Rod and the club made the announcement before Sunday’s 3-2 victory over Cleveland.

“This is a tough day. I love this game and I love this team,” he said, often choking up. “And today Alex I’m saying goodbye Rodriguez to both.”

The 41-year-old Rodriguez, who sat out the 2014 season while serving a performance-enhancing drug suspension, will play against Tampa Bay at Yankee Stadium and then be released after Friday’s game.

New York will pay him the remainder of the approximately $27 million he’s owed as part of his $275 million, 10-year contract.

Rodriguez said the agreement arose out of conversations over the past few days with Yankees Managing General Partner Hal Steinbrenner.

The two met face-to-face more than once, and A-Rod said he asked for one more chance to play in front of a New York crowd.

Relegated to little more than a spare part lately, the three-time AL MVP acknowledged “the last four weeks have not been fun.”

“It’s been very painful and embarrassing to sit on the bench. It’s been awkward,” Rodriguez explained. “So from that sense I’m very happy that we found this solution.”

But he made it clear he still thinks he could contribute on the field.

“Of course, I think I can play baseball. You always think you have one more hit in you, or help the team win one more game, for sure,” said Rodriguez, who is four home runs shy of 700. “That wasn’t in the cards. That was the Yankees’ decision and I’m at peace with it.”

Furyk was the most recent PGA Tour player with a 59 at Conway Farms.

Grasu leaves practice with injury that looked ‘fairly serious’

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@profootballweekly.com CHICAGO – Hroniss Grasu suffered a noncontact injury to his right knee that John Fox referred to as appearing to look “fairly serious” during Saturday’s practice at Soldier Field.

“He was changing direction and it didn’t go well, so we’ll see the extent of it as we go,” Fox said.

The injury occurred right in front of Fox at the end of a play during team drills. Grasu was helped off the field and eventually carted to the locker room.

Jay Cutler spent time talking to the second-year center before Grasu was taken in.

The Soldier Field surface did not appear to be in ideal condition.

“You can’t really blame everything on the field,” said Akiem Hicks, who added that it seemed in the “same condition” as his previous experiences playing in Chicago.

The No. 2 center during camp has been Cornelius Edison, an undrafted player who spent most of 2015 with the practice squad.

Another scuffle: Larsen was in the middle of yet another scrum, this one in front of the fans during Family Fest and with linebacker Lamin Barrow. Several players ran onto the field to join the fracas.

“It was disappointing today,” Fox said. “We’re getting too close to games.

You’ve got to be able to control that and not lose control of your emotions.”

Injury update: Alshon Jeffery (hamstring), Eddie Royal (concussion) and Zach Miller (concussion) were present at practice but did not participate. Kevin White did practice after taking Friday off.

CROMWELL, Conn. – Jim Furyk has a place in PGA Tour history all to himself with a new magic number in golf.

Three years after Furyk became the sixth player on tour with a 59, he took it even lower Sunday in the Travelers Championship with a 12-under 58.

The 46-year-old American bounced in an eagle from 135 yards on his third hole, ran off seven straight birdies around the turn and picked up his final birdie on the 16th hole with a putt from just inside 24 feet. He rolled in a short par putt on the final hole at TPC River Highlands, thrust his arms in the air and waved his cap to salute thousands of fans who had rushed to the amphitheater around the 18th green to catch a stunning slice of history.

“There’s a lot of rounds by a lot of great players ahead of me that have never reached 58, so to hold that record alone right now, on the PGA Tour at least ... is phenomenal,” Furyk said. “To have a little, small place in history is something you dream of.”

And it could have been even lower.

It might not have happened if Furyk had not gone this road before. He shot a 59 at Conway Farms in the second round of the 2013 BMW Championship with a bogey on his card.

“I guess had I never shot 59 before, I probably would have been thinking 59, the barrier,” he said. “But the fact that I did it three years ago, you know, in the back of my mind I’ve got 11-under through 12; I’ve got six holes to play. If I play them under par, I’m going to break another barrier.”

Ryo Ishikawa shot a 58 in The Crowns on the Japan Golf Tour in 2010. Shigeki Maruyama shot a 58 in U.S. Open sectional qualifying in 2000. And just last week, Stephan Jaeger posted a 58 on the Web.com Tour in the Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae.

Furyk is the only player with sub60 rounds twice. And both times, he had to settle for history, not a trophy.

He was third at the 2013 BMW Championship and finished in a tie for fifth place Sunday, three shots behind champion Russell Knox.

CANTON, Ohio – An emotional and invigorating Hall of Fame weekend came to a grinding halt Sunday night when the Packers-Colts game was canceled because of poor field conditions.

One day after Brett Favre led the eight-member class of 2016 into the hall, its president, David Baker, announced the cancellation after discussing problems with the turf with both teams. He said it was a safety issue and that all fans would be fully refunded for ticket purchases, which will cost the hall several million dollars.

“This is a hard decision, but we know it is the right decision,” Baker said. “In some respects a hard decision because of the impact it has. This is an important game to the people in Canton.”

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Denny Hamlin wasn’t about to get shoved aside again.

Ignoring what he described as the worst pain he has ever felt in a race, Hamlin prevailed in a four-lap dash to the checkered flag Sunday to win the wreck-filled Sprint Cup race at newly paved Watkins Glen International.

It’s the first road course win of Hamlin’s Cup career and atoned for his stunning loss on the road course at Sonoma in June, when he was beaten by Tony Stewart with a bang on the last turn.

Hamlin was virtually flawless at The Glen and was able to conserve enough fuel at the end, thanks to eight cautions for 20 laps.

The race also had two red flag stoppages for 30 minutes.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Serena and Venus Williams never had lost an Olympic doubles match until Sunday night, going 15-0 and earning three gold medals together.

Their first-round opponents at the Rio de Janeiro Games, the Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova, never had won any sort of match as a pair, at any event. And they had zero wins between them in Olympic doubles competition, going a combined 0-3 with other partners.

So it was rather stunning, to say the least, when the Williams sisters were beaten, 6-3, 6-4, by Safarova and Strycova in the first round in Rio. “We played terrible,” Serena said, “and it showed in the results.”

The American duo was seeded No. 1 and coming off a 14th Grand Slam championship together at Wimbledon a month ago.

The Czechs, meanwhile, are unseeded. And get this: They weren’t even supposed to be playing together at the

Olympics. Strycova was a late replacement for Karolina Pliskova, who withdrew from the tournament.

Indeed, Strycova and Safarova only had played one match as a team before Sunday – and they lost that, in a Fed Cup match last year.

“That’s true, but we are really good friends. We know each other’s games,” said Strycova, never better than a doubles semifinalist at a Grand Slam tournament. “I know what I have to do on the court, and she knows what she has to do.”

Safarova is a strong doubles player, and she won two major titles in 2015 with Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States.

When the Czechs found out who they’d be facing to start things off in Brazil, Safarova said their reaction was: “The draw could be better.”

And then she and Strycova started laughing.

“But it was a challenge,” Safarova AP photos continued, “and we love challenges.

Phelps gets 19th gold, Ledecky sets world record

Time to make room for gold No. 19.

With yet another dazzling performance, the most decorated athlete in Olympic history added to his staggering haul Sunday night in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay, giving the United States a lead it never relinquished.

Defending Olympic champion France was leading when Phelps dove into the water on the second leg, taking over for leadoff swimmer Caeleb Dressel. Even though the 100 free isn’t one of his specialties – he’s never swam it at the Olympics – he blazed down and back in a stunning 47.12 seconds, a time that was faster than all but the three anchors on the medal-winning teams, three of the best in the world at that distance.

Ryan Held protected the lead before giving way for Nathan Adrian, America’s best sprinter.

At that point, it wasn’t really in doubt. But Phelps wasn’t taking any chances, pounding the starting block and shouting toward Adrian as the anchor made the turn for home.

When Adrian touched the wall first, posting a winning time of 3 minutes, 9.92 seconds, Phelps thrust his right arm in the air and looked toward his infant son Boomer, nuzzling in the arms of his mother Nicole Johnson, the roaring crowd blocked out by noise-canceling headphones.

The top eight teams in qualifying move on to Tuesday’s team final, where the U.S. is expected to repeat the gold it won easily in London and give it to Karolyi as a retirement present. Karolyi is stepping away after the games, though she’s hardly in a hurry to get there. There are still a few more lessons to teach.

“My expectations are higher for you than anyone else’s,” she said. “What I’m trying to do is get the most out of every single person.”

No wonder Russian gymnastics star Aliya Mustafina figures everybody is playing for silver.

“It’s going to be really difficult to compete against the American team,” Mustafina said through a translator after the Russians survived a sometimes shaky qualifying session. “They are unbeatable at the moment.”

China and Russia both struggled at times on Sunday, beset by mistakes they can’t afford to make if they want to make the team finals anything more than a coronation. While each have their strengths, the truth is the U.S. has few weaknesses.

The margin for error will be thinner in the three-up, three-count final. Yet after the U.S. went 16 for 16 during an occasionally showstopping 90 minutes, they hardly seem overburdened by the stakes.

“I think all of our hard work was just to show the world,” said Madison Kocian, who put up the top score on uneven bars.

“I mean we’re 10 points ahead.”

Good luck world. It’s up to China, Russia, Great Britain, Brazil, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands to knock the Americans off their throne. How difficult will it be? Consider this: the margin between the U.S. and the Chinese on Sunday was greater than the margin between China and 12th-place Belgium.

Romania failed to qualify for the Olympics as a team for the first time in more than 40 years but will have an event finalist after Catalina Ponor finished in the top eight on beam. Uzbekistan’s Oksana Chusovitina, competing in her record seventh Olympics, reached the vault final after finishing fifth in qualifying.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Juan Martin del Potro is back, and Novak Djokovic is gone.

The top-ranked Djokovic was swept out of the singles tournament at the Olympics in the first round Sunday by the 2009 U.S. Open champion 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) in a result that left both players sobbing.

After three left wrist surgeries that had him contemplating retirement from tennis, del Potro is ranked just 145th in the world.

But when the big Argentine is healthy and smacking his signature forehand around the court, his play is worthy of the gold-medal match.

It would be a forehand off the net cord, however, that clinched victory on his second match point. The two shared a long embrace at the net, with Djokovic’s legacy still missing an Olympic gold medal. He’ll be 33 in 2020.

Corey Cogdell-Unrein, wife of Bears defensive lineman Mitch Unrein, won the bronze medal Sunday in Rio for trap shooting.

Cogdell-Unrein, in her third Olympics, defeated Spain’s Fatima Galvez in the bronze medal match in a shoot-off after both shooters hit 13 of 15 targets. Cogdell-Unrein also won a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games.

“Missing my first target out was definitely not a good feeling,” Cogdell-Unrein said, per the AP. “But I knew if I smoothed out and do what I normally do, I could still continue to shoot a good final and that’s what I did.”

During Saturday’s Bears practice at Soldier Field, Unrein’s teammates wore “Team Unrein” Olympics shirts, and Kyle Long showed his support for Unrein’s Olympian wife on social media.

Standing in the darkened tunnel before entering Rio Olympic Arena on Sunday night, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team felt the pressure that comes not from outside expectations but those held within.

Then the lights came on.

And just like that, the young women in the glittery red-and-blue leotards national team coordinator Martha Karolyi has molded into a global force relaxed.

And dominated.

On bars. On beam. On vault and floor too. Their not-a-typo score of 185.238 was nearly 10 points better than second-place China through four of the five subdivisions, a preposterous gap in a sport where the difference between first and second is measured in fractions.

“It’s never 100 percent perfect but I think we showed that our gymnastics is of the highest level,” Karolyi said.

One no opponent is close to reaching.

If the U.S. had swapped out its highest score on each event with its lowest, it would still be up by six points.

Three-time world champion Simone Biles led the way. Her score of 62.366 was well clear of teammate Aly Raisman. So much for the butterflies in her stomach.

“I do a very good job at hiding it,” Biles said. “The team, we just calm it down.”

Consider it a luxury of being so far beyond the rest of the planet. All five women earned a spot in either the all-around or event finals, or in the case of Biles and Raisman, both.

Raisman, a three-time Olympic medalist four years ago, grabbed the second spot in the individual all-around for the Americans by edging reigning Olympic champion Gabby Douglas thanks in part to what Raisman called “the best bar routine of my life.”

Rules limit each country to two gymnasts per event in the all-around and event finals, meaning even though Douglas was third overall, she’ll miss out on a chance to defend the crown she won in London. Not that she was moping. When Raisman drilled her dismount on beam, Douglas rose from her chair and gave her a hug.

Memory research promising Dear Dr. K: How do we make memories, where do our brains store them, and when we lose them, do we lose them forever?

Dear Reader: I used to think of memories as single entities, like books on a shelf.

Instead, memories are more like a cloth that weaves together visual images, sounds, other sensations and emotions.

Different areas of the brain process and store different aspects of a memory. For example, when you learned a song – “The Star-Spangled Banner,” say – you stored the words in a different region of your brain from where you stored the song’s melody.

The memory of the words and melody might also be connected to an image of the American flag, stored in another location. Your memories are thus intricately broken down into pieces, stored in different places, but “cross-referenced” and thereby connected.

But how does a memory get made and filed away?

Stage 1: Acquisition. When you learn new information, it first gets stored in shortterm memory. This occurs primarily in a part of the brain called the hippocampus, deep inside the brain. Most short-term memories quickly fade.

Stage 2: Consolidation. For short-term memory to become long-term memory, the initial neuronal pathways must be strengthened.

When an event is emotionally charged, it is more likely to become part of long-term memory. Once a memory is established (consolidated), it is stored in areas of the cerebral cortex. That’s the large, domed outer layer of the brain.

The memories that endure are those that were encoded most completely in the first place – the information that you paid the closest attention to when you learned it. Memories that involve multiple senses as well as emotions are more likely to be retained.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff For example, like me, you probably remember exactly what you were doing when you heard about the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

You probably remember who else was with you, where you were, and the first picture you saw of the twin towers. That’s because the emotional charge of learning that our country had been attacked caused you to store everything about that moment in your memory.

But, like me, you probably have no idea what you were doing exactly 24 hours before and 24 hours after you heard about the 9/11 attacks.

Stage 3: Retrieval. Memories are stored in the brain inside certain small groups of nerve cells (neurons). Each cell has little projections that, microscopically, look like tiny trees with branches and twigs. Connections between the “trees” of two cells are called synapses. Two nerve cells talk to each other through the synapse. When you’re not thinking about a memory, the synapses are inactive. When you want to recall a memory, your brain must reactivate the synapses.

You asked if a person who loses memories loses them forever. Until recently, we thought that probably was the case.

However, exciting new research indicates that “lost” memories may not have been destroyed. They may just have been made inaccessible – and potentially recoverable.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have been with my boyfriend, Jeanne “Jake,” for a Phillips year and a half.

To put it mildly, his dad does not like me. He has never thought I was good enough for his son, and he doesn’t like the fact I have a daughter from an earlier relationship. He thinks I’m interested in Jake only for his money, even though I work a full-time job and Jake and I share everything equally, except my daughter’s expenses. I pay for those myself.

When Jake and I attend family gatherings for holidays or birthdays, his dad refuses to say hello to me. He does, however, make derogatory or negative remarks about me to Jake. It’s incredibly hurtful and demeaning.

I have tried bringing it up to Jake, and he agrees. But he will not address it with his dad because “Dad won’t change.” Can you help? – Disliked In Massachusetts Dear Disliked: I don’t know how serious Jake is about you, but if he was in love with you and planned on marrying you, he would insist that, at the very least, his father treat you with respect. Dad won’t change because his son isn’t assertive enough to make plain if he doesn’t, he will be seeing less of the both of you. I can only hope your child isn’t on the receiving end of this kind of treatment, because if that’s happening – for both of your sakes – I’m advising you to end the romance with Jake.

Dear Abby: I have been married to the love of my life for 21 years. He has helped me raise my two children to adulthood. Both have now moved away and have their own lives.

My problem started a year and a half ago, when my grandson was born. I live 750 miles from my daughter and her little boy, and have a standing invitation to see them as often as I want (every three to four months).

It makes more sense for me to travel to see them than the reverse.

I always have invited my husband to come with me, but he refuses. He has now given me an ultimatum: I can see them no more than twice a year or he will divorce me. What do you say, Abby? – Dumbstruck
