Man’s first swing in a year pays off big EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson Some people fail to see the attraction of golf.

I get it: The game is hard. You can go out and spend $30 to $100 for the opportunity to slice golf balls into the water, or hook them into the woods, and curse those putts that lip out of the cup, all while you get a sunburn for your trouble.

But it’s those few shots that you make that go exactly the way you planned that keep you coming back. The drive that flies 200, 300 yards and lands in the fairway, the iron shot that flies high and flops onto the green just a few feet from the hole, or the 15-foot putt that drops – there’s nothing like it.

Even better is when you make a shot like that and they give you a car afterward.

That’s what happened to Bryan Jack on Thursday at the Sycamore Chamber Golf Outing. Jack and the other members of his group – John and Ed Kuhn of Banner Up Signs and Tom Bartnett of Greenacre Cleaners – started their round on the 14th hole at the Sycamore Golf Club.

The 14th is a 166-yard par-3. Jack took a 5-wood out of his bag, aimed slightly left to compensate for his slice and swung away. Yes, he acknowledges that a 5-wood is a lot of club for that distance. But ...

“It took one bounce behind the cup and came back, hit the pin and dropped straight in,” Jack said.

His reaction was total disbelief. That makes sense, considering it was not only his first swing of the day, it was also his first swing in about a year. Jack, 50, of Lily Lake, said the last time he’d played golf was at last year’s

The shot won him a Chevy Malibu from DeKalb-Sycamore Chevrolet. He called his wife, Elizabeth, after he learned he was a winner. She didn’t believe him.

“She called me back twice to make sure I wasn’t joking,” he said.

After the outing was over Thursday, Jack said he was trying to figure out how he’d pay the taxes on the vehicle. Jack said he’s more of a pickup truck man, but his wife would love the new vehicle – and so would his 11-year-old daughter in about five years.

It’s a funny game, golf. Those once-in-a-lifetime shots can happen to anybody – but only if you keep playing, no matter how many balls you hook into the woods.

RIO WELCOMES WORLD Olympics open with celebration and serious message

By MAURICIO SAVARESE and JOHN LEICESTER The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO – With fireworks forming the word “Rio” in the sky and supermodel Gisele Bundchen shimmering to the tune of “The Girl from Ipanema,” Rio de Janiero jubilantly welcomed the world Friday to the first Olympic Games in South America.

After one of the roughest-ever rides from vote to games by an Olympic host, the city of beaches, carnival, grinding poverty and sun-kissed wealth opened the two-week games of the 31st Olympiad with a high-energy gala celebration of Brazil’s can-do spirit, biodiversity and melting pot history.

The low-tech, cut-price opening ceremony, a moment of levity for a nation beset by economic and political woes, featured performers as slaves, gravity-defying climbers hanging from buildings in Brazil’s teeming megacities and – of course – dancers, all hips and wobble, grooving to thumping funk and sultry samba.

But Brazil also packaged its party with solemnity, lacing the fun and frivolous show with sobering messages about global warming and conservation.

Images of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, swirling in the Earth’s atmosphere were followed by projections of world cities and regions – Amsterdam, Florida, Shanghai, Dubai – being swamped by rising seas. The peace symbol, tweaked into the shape of a tree, was projected onto the floor of the Maracana Stadium that filed with thousands of athletes from the 207 teams.

“The heat is melting the icecap,” a voice intoned. “It’s disappearing very quickly.”

The crowd roared when Bundchen sashayed from one side of the 78,000seat arena to the other, as Tom Jobim’s grandson, Daniel, played his grandfather’s famous song about the Ipanema girl “tall and tan and young and lovely.”

In a video preceding the show, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the games “celebrate the best of humanity” and appealed for an Olympic truce, calling on “all warring parties to lay down their weapons” during the two weeks of sporting achievement.

There were times after the International Olympic Committee selected Rio ahead of Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid in 2009 when it seemed that the city of 6.5

The spreading health crisis of the mosquito-born Zika virus kept some athletes away. Promises to clean up Rio’s filthy waters remained unfulfilled. The heavy bill for the games, at least $12 billion, made them unpopular with many. Heavily armed security stopped a small group of protesters from getting close to the stadium ahead of the ceremony.

But with more than a dash of “gambiarra,” the Brazilian art of quick-fixes and making do, Rio is ready.

Just.

“Our admiration is even greater because you managed this at a very difficult time in Brazilian history. We have always believed in you,” IOC President Thomas Bach said.

The honor of officially declaring the games open fell to Michel Temer, Brazil’s unpopular interim president, who was loudly jeered and faced shouts of “out with Temer.” He was standing in for suspended President Dilma Rousseff. Her ouster less than four months

ahead of the games for alleged budget violations was one of many spanners in the works of Brazil’s Olympic preparations and impacted the opening ceremony itself. Fewer than 25 foreign heads of state were listed as attending, with others seemingly staying away to avoid giving the impression of taking sides amid Brazil’s leadership uncertainty.

The cannonball-shaped cauldron was lit by Brazilian marathoner Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima. At the 2004 games, an Irish spectator wearing a kilt, knee-socks and a beret tackled de Lima while he was leading the Olympic marathon. Instead of gold, he fell back to take bronze.

Greece, the historical and spiritual home of the games, led the march by athletes into the stadium. They were joined by a first-ever Refugee Olympic Team of 10 athletes, displaced from Syria, South Sudan, Congo and Ethiopia. Their flag-bearer, Rose Nathike Lokonyen, fled war in South Sudan and ran her first race in a refugee camp in northern Kenya. Only Brazil’s team, which marched last, drew a louder roar from the crowd than the refugees.

The athletes were given tree seeds, plus cartridges of soil. When they sprout, they will be planted in a Rio park.

With “USA” emblazoned on the back of his jacket, Michael Phelps carried the flag for the U.S. team, the largest with 549 competitors. At his fifth and last Olympics, it was the first time the record holder of 22 medals had marched in an opening ceremony, having skipped previous ones to save energy for competition.

On behalf of all 11,288 competitors (6,182 men; 5,106 women), Brazilian two-time Olympic champion sailor Robert Scheidt pledged that they won’t take banned drugs – an oath likely to ring false to fans after the scandal of government-orchestrated cheating in Russia. As a consequence, Russia’s team was whittled down from a hopedfor 389 athletes to around 270.

Iran picked a woman, archer Zahra Nemati, as flag-bearer for its team made up overwhelmingly of men. Another woman pushed Nemati’s wheelchair. She was paralyzed in a car accident as a teenager.

Judge denies special prosecutor in Ridulph case Victim’s brother says he won’t appeal decision

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A judge put an end Friday to a victim’s family’s push to have a special prosecutor review the evidence that DeKalb County prosecutors used to free the man convicted of Sycamore’s most sensational crime.

DeKalb County Circuit Court Judge William Brady ruled that State’s Attorney Richard Schmack had no conflict of interest when Schmack concluded Jack McCullough was innocent of the 1957 murder of 7-year-old Sycamore girl Maria Ridulph.

Brady denied a request from Charles Ridulph, Maria’s older brother, to have a special prosecutor review how Schmack handled the case. Charles Ridulph had claimed Schmack had a conflict of interest in the case. However, the judge found there was no conflict.

Brady said that despite his personal feelings, he had to follow the law and dismiss the case.

“This is a case where, if it was to be for personal favoritism, it would certainly fall on the side of the Ridulphs, people who have suffered through a lifetime of immeasurable tragedy. People who have conducted themselves in a fashion that would make their parents proud. It would not be hard for me to say they’ve earned this right,” Brady said. “But, I can’t run from my responsibilities because of my personal animus, my personal feelings. I have to consider the case based on the law.”

The law, he said, didn’t call for the appointment of a special prosecutor.

His decision ends the case’s six-year journey through the court system.

McCullough, 76, of Seattle, was convicted of the crime in 2012, but was released from prison in April when Brady granted Schmack’s request to vacate the 76-year-old man’s murder conviction. Schmack said that after an exhaustive review of the evidence in the case he concluded that McCullough was in Rockford at the time of Maria’s

Charles Ridulph claimed in May that Schmack promised during his 2012 campaign for DeKalb County state’s attorney to drop murder charges against Jack McCullough. Ridulph’s attorney, Bruce Brandwein, argued that the promise created a conflict of interest that required a special prosecutor to be appointed. Schmack denied he had a conflict of interest in the case. Brady agreed.

At Friday’s hearing, Brandwein had planned to call witnesses to try to prove Schmack’s involvement in the 59-yearold cold case was undermined by a campaign promise. Those plans were scrapped when Brandwein’s key witness, former DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Julie Trevarthen, said she was too sick to make it to court.

Brandwein initially asked for a continuance so Trevarthen could be present to testify. However, Brady said the matter could proceed. He said he would consider Trevarthen’s affidavit and other court documents in making his decision. After a short recess, the judge spoke at length about the constitution and how he arrived at his conclusion.

After Friday’s hearing, Schmack said “the judge ruled correctly.”

Ridulph said he was disappointed by the ruling, but saw no reason to appeal the decision given the limited circumstances under the law for appointing a special prosecutor. He also said the state’s laws regarding special prosecutors should be broadened.

Even if Schmack, a Democrat, loses his position to Republican challenger Rick Amato in the November election, Ridulph said the case against Jack Mc-

Cullough was unlikely to be retried.

McCullough lived near Maria Ridulph when the 7-year-old girl disappeared from the corner of Archie Place and Center Cross Street on Dec. 3, 1957.

McCullough was 18 and known as John Tessier at the time of the crime.

He has long maintained he was visiting Air Force recruiters in Rockford at the time Maria disappeared, and that FBI reports from the time prove this.

Schmack said phone records from the time verified McCullough’s claim that he placed a collect call from the downtown Rockford Post Office at 6:57 p.m. that night, making it impossible for McCullough to have been in Sycamore at the time witnesses told police Maria was abducted.

After he was released from prison, McCullough returned to his home in Washington.

Sheryl A. Montavon, age 79, died Thursday Aug. 4, 2016, in Kishwaukee Hospital, DeKalb. Sheryl was born May 6, 1937, in DeKalb the daughter of Anthony & Elvira (Klemm) Umbdenstock.

Sheryl graduated from Maple Park Community High School, and then received a degree from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI. Sheryl married John Montavon on Aug. 12, 1967, in DeKalb, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 2005.

Sheryl worked a legal secretary for Klein Stoddard Buck Attorneys. Sheryl was a private pilot, where she was part of the Civil Air Patrol. She ran a family farm market stand on Sycamore Road. Sheryl enjoyed reading, spending her time with family and most of all her grandchildren.

DeKALB – Officials from DeKalbbased School District 428 used social media Friday to distribute their latest message addressing the stalled contract negotiations with the teachers union.

The five-page missive, titled “A Message From the DeKalb Board of Education,” is a follow-up to the rebuke stakeholders offered the board during public comments at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

Those comments were in response to a four-page letter the district emailed to parents July 25 regarding the collective bargaining process.

“Earlier this week, parents, former teachers, students and community residents offered their commentary on the current contract negotiations,” read the first sentence of Friday’s note from the school board. “The board appreciated the speakers’ opinions and candor.”

District officials said the new communiqué, which is posted on Facebook and includes several charts and graphs

to convey financial information, was designed to give more information. It starts off stating the district has not received full state funding in years and expects a $1.6 million deficit this upcoming school year.

The district said the teachers’ proposal for a new three-year labor deal would cost an additional $5.2 million, while the district’s offer would increase labor costs by $1.5 million.

“The teachers’ financial demands would further erode the district’s reserves to dangerous levels in the years to come,” officials wrote. “If this were to happen and a downgrade resulted, our taxpayers could owe an additional $4.6 million in interest on the debt and a potential refinancing would be jeopardized.”

The “refinancing” the district referred to is for $110 million in building bonds, payments on which are set to balloon starting in 2017. If the district does not refinance those bonds and stretch the repayment out over a longer period, district property taxpayers could see jarring property tax increases.

“We’re just trying to get the facts

out there,” said Jim Bormann, the district’s human resources manager.

He spoke on behalf of Superintendent Doug Moeller, who was out of the office until Monday, according to a message on the superintendent’s voicemail.

School Board President Victoria Newport did not return phone calls Friday seeking comment.

Representatives from the DeKalb Classroom Teachers’ Association did not immediately return calls and emails requesting comment. The union represents more than 430 teachers and other education professionals.

But at least one school board member said the board took note of how people perceived the tone of the first message. Some students at Tuesday’s meeting called it a bullying tactic, while parents said it characterized teachers as “monsters.”

“If it appeared that way, we needed to take a different tone,” said Howard Solomon, a school board member and former educator.

The school board scheduled two special early morning meetings after the one Tuesday. The first one was held Friday. According to the agenda, after commencing and allowing for public comments, the rest of the meeting was reserved for closed session.

SYCAMORE – A former Northern Illinois University police officer accused of sexually assaulting a student in 2011 could go to trial in December.

Andrew Rifkin, 28, is charged with sexually assaulting a woman who was a freshman at NIU in October 2011 while he was employed by the NIU Police Department.

Judge William Brady denied Rifkin’s motion to have the case dismissed Friday and set a trial date for Dec. 12.

Rifkin’s attorney, Bruce Brandwein, had asked for the case to be tossed out because police misconduct had violated Rifkin’s due process rights and made it impossible for him to get a fair trial.

“I think it’s a true statement to say that each judge that has touched this case has found flaws, perhaps, arguably, illegality,” Brady said Friday. “There’s sanctions already imposed by one judge, another judge has denied the sanctions ... I’m not really sure what sanctions are available to me that haven’t already been imposed.”

DeKALB – In an effort to spur construction of new homes in DeKalb, the city might look to offer builder incentives, according to an impact fee discussion that is scheduled for Monday’s City Council meeting.

There are about 250 lots in the city that are ready to be developed, city leaders have said.

The DeKalb Sanitary District stands as one of the first entities wanting to waive impact fees to attract new homeowners to DeKalb. The head of the district first made mention of the plan at a past City Council meeting. The city of DeKalb could follow suit.

The topic is expected to be discussed by aldermen and the mayor during the Committee of the Whole meeting, which is set for 5 p.m. Monday in the council chambers at the municipal building, 200 S. Fourth St.

The council meets as a Committee of the Whole before the regular City Council meeting at 6 p.m.

The agenda for the regular meeting includes a proposal to allow the mayor, city manager and finance director to be able to sign off on financial transactions for the city.

According to city staff in a memo addressed to the City Council on the issue, the current ordinance related to whose signature is acceptable leaves some questions. Staff is recommending a resolution that would explicitly name signatories.

Aldermen also are scheduled to have their first hearing on a plan to establish an economic development commission.

The mayor announced during his July 28 State of the City address that he wanted to start the volunteer citizen commission.

The address was made at the Chamber of Commerce breakfast.

Hopkins pool to reopen Saturday Police seek information about DeKALB – The Hopkins Park pool will car burglaries near Kirkland reopen Saturday after an emergency closure.

Park district officials said they closed the pool Thursday after a fecal contamination issue. The pool remained closed Friday for a super chlorination to follow health and safety protocols.

“We apologize for the inconvenience of being closed,” the DeKalb Park District said in a news release Friday.

The pool will be open for lap swim at 10 a.m. today with public swim beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The kiddie pool also will be open at 10 a.m., the district said.

They have 2 daughters, 2 sons-in-laws, six grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. Their daughter Barbara is married to Bruce Barber, and lives in Decatur, daughter Brenda is married to Ed Forster, they live in Janesville, Wisconsin. The grandchildren all live within driving distance and visit often.

During their marriage they moved 9 times, mostly with DeKalb Seed Corn Company. They have lived in Tuscola, Illinois, DeKalb, Illinois, Augusta, Georgia, Sierra Vista, AZ, DeKalb, Illinois (again) Deshler, Ohio, Marshall, Missouri, Fort Dodge, Iowa, and have been back in DeKalb since 1977. They enjoy golf, friends, travel, and family.

The McDonald video sparked protests and led to the ouster of the former police superintendent. The officer who shot him is now awaiting trial on murder charges.

The latest recording catches the stolen car being pursued by officers as it blows through a stop sign. Before gunfire breaks out, the suspect sideswipes one squad car and then smashes into another as officers open fire.

An officer can be heard explaining that the suspect “almost hit my partner. I [expletive] shot at him.” Another officer who apparently fired his weapon laments that he was going to be on “desk duty for 30 [expletive] days now.”

lice Superintendent Eddie Johnson stripped three of the officers of their police powers after a preliminary investigation concluded they had violated department policy. On Friday, he promised that if the officers acted improperly, they would “be held accountable for their actions.”

Authorities have not said specifically what policy the officers broke.

In February 2015, former Superintendent Garry McCarthy revised the department’s policy on the use of deadly force to prohibit officers from “firing at or into a moving vehicle when the vehicle is the only force used against the sworn member or another person.”

But the policy also says that officers “will not unreasonably endanger themselves or another person to conform to the restrictions of this directive,” meaning they have the right to defend themselves if they or someone else are in imminent danger of being struck.

The head of the Independent Police Review Authority, the agency that investigates Chicago police misconduct, called the footage “shocking and disturbing.” She did not elaborate.

The officer who killed O’Neal said he believed O’Neal had fired at him and he returned fire with three to five rounds.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Video released Friday shows Chicago police firing repeatedly at a stolen car as it careens down the street away from them, then handcuffing the mortally wounded black 18-yearold who was at the wheel after a chaotic foot chase through a residential neighborhood.

None of the footage from last month shows the moment the suspected car thief was shot in the back. Shortly after the shots are fired, Paul O’Neal can be seen lying face-down on the ground in a backyard, blood soaking through the back of his T-shirt.

An officer is heard angrily accusing the suspect of firing at police. Another officer asks, “They shot at us too, right?” suggesting police believed they had been fired upon and that they did not know how many suspects were present.

No gun was recovered from the scene.

Attorney Michael Oppenheimer, who represents O’Neal’s family, said the video showed officers taking “street justice into their own hands.”

Department officials said five pregnant women are awaiting test results from the Centers for Disease Control to determine if they have the virus. Zika, which is spread to people through mosquito bites, can cause severe birth defects.

CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools will lay off about 1,000 employees, nearly half of whom are teachers.

Officials with the nation’s third-largest school district characterized the layoffs Friday as part of the “normal” yearly staff movement between schools and that they expect most people will be hired for other jobs. CPS has about 1,000 teaching vacancies.

The teacher layoffs include 302 at high schools and 192 at elementary schools.

WHEATON – A former student at a suburban Chicago Christian college has been sentenced to 180 days in jail for secretly filming female classmates in their campus apartment bathroom.

Alexander Lim of Singapore apologized to his victims during a nearly four-hour sentencing hearing over two days, ending Thursday. Prosecutors showed excerpts of the videos, showing 40 female Wheaton College students using the toilet and showering.

FAIRFAX, Va. – A three-term northern Virginia mayor was arrested on drug charges after he tried to trade two grams of methamphetamine for sex acts in what turned out to be an undercover sting operation, police said Friday.

City of Fairfax Mayor R. Scott Silverthorne was arrested Thursday night after meeting at a Tysons Corner hotel just outside the Capital Beltway with undercover detectives he approached through a website used to arrange casual sexual encounters between men, Fairfax County police said at a press conference.

Police Capt. Jack Hardin said they received a tip that Silverthorne had been arranging drugs-for-sex encounters. Police then set up an online profile on the website, and within two days Silverthorne made contact online with the detective who set up the profile, Hardin said.

Trump ends standoff with Ryan, strains to fix split The ASSOCIATED PRESS GREEN BAY, Wis. – Donald Trump endorsed House Speaker Paul Ryan late Friday, ending a four-day standoff between the GOP’s most powerful men that exposed deepening concerns about the New York billionaire’s presidential candidacy.

Ryan, like other top Wisconsin Republicans, did not attend Trump’s evening appearance in their state.

Having refused to endorse the speaker earlier in the week, Trump said, “We have to unite” as he vowed to support Ryan in next week’s primary contest.

It was a stunning reversal for Trump, a candidate who is known for his refusal to admit mistakes and whose general election campaign has been defined by his constant attacks on fellow Republicans. His timing was a bit curious, competing with the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Trump also threw his support behind Arizona Sen. John McCain and New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte, with whom he has sparred.

“We will have disagreements,” Trump said.

“But we will disagree as friends and never stop working together toward victory.”

An aide to Ryan said Friday, “He appreciates the gesture and is going to continue to focus on earning the endorsement of the voters in southern Wisconsin.”

Ryan reiterated his support for Trump hours before the endorsement, but the Wis-

consin Republican noted his support wasn’t a “blank check” and pledged to speak out against the businessman’s divisive positions if necessary.

Party divisions were easy to find Friday in Wisconsin, a state that Trump’s team insists he can win in November.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker skipped the evening rally, preferring to attend an all-youcan-eat spaghetti dinner instead of appearing with his party’s standard bearer. Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos offered a blunt message ahead of the presidential nominee’s arrival.

“Welcome to Wisconsin, Mr. Trump, but let’s get something straight,” Vos wrote in an open letter to his GOP colleagues. “We are Ryan Republicans here in Wisconsin, not Trump Republicans.”

The Midwest mayhem underscored Trump’s mounting challenges during one of the most tumultuous weeks of his unorthodox campaign. WASHINGTON – Years of steady job gains finally have begun to benefit a wider range of Americans, including those with less education and in lower-paying jobs.

A second straight month of robust hiring – 255,000 jobs added in July – pointed to employer confidence that suggested that the economy is powering through a slump that struck early this year.

The unemployment rate remained a low 4.9 percent, the Labor Department said Friday.

Hiring has been solid for six years, but for most of that time it had caveats: Average hourly pay was stagnant.

And millions no longer were either working or looking for work, leaving a smaller proportion of adults in the labor force.

Evidence is emerging that those long-running weak spots finally are improving.

Many businesses are offering higher pay to attract workers as competition to fill jobs heats up. Average pay is up 2.6 percent from a year ago –

matching the best 12-month gain since the Great Recession ended in 2009 and comfortably above inflation of just 1 percent.

The resilient job market is encouraging more Americans to begin looking for a job – a key trend that helps offset a drag from the growing retirements of aging baby boomers.

Taken together, the two trends suggest that the economic recovery, now seven years old, is finally benefiting a broad spectrum of the population.

Economists at Goldman Sachs have found that pay for workers earning less than $12.50 an hour has risen 4 percent in the past year, more than for any other income group.

Those earning from $12.50 to $20 an hour have received the next-biggest increase, at just above 3 percent. Higher minimum wages may be bumping up pay for workers further above the federal minimum of $7.25.

“Wage growth figures indicate that the tide is turning,” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former director of the Congressional Budget Office and president of the conservative American Action Forum.

Protesters block road leading to UK airport The ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON – Activists linked to the U.S.-based group Black Lives Matter blocked a road Friday leading to London’s Heathrow Airport and held protests in other British cities.

Organizer Joshua Virasami told the BBC that the movement – founded to protest the killings of black people by American police – was needed “in Britain and all over the world.”

U.K. Black Lives Matter said in a statement it was holding a “shutdown” of roads in London and other cities to “mourn those who have died in custody and to protest the ongoing racist violence of the police, border enforcement, structural inequalities and the everyday indignity of street racism.”

London’s Metropolitan Police said officers arrested 10 people blocking a road leading from a main highway to Heathrow on Friday morning, including six who were “locked” to one another.

across the road beside a banner saying “this is a crisis.”

Police said one lane of the road was open but traffic was backed up getting into one of the world’s busiest airports.

Heathrow said it was not aware of passengers missing flights because of the protest.

In other protests, a small group of demonstrators in the central England city of Nottingham disrupted public transport by lying down on tram tracks, and police removed protesters from a road near Birmingham Airport, 100 miles north of London.

The protesters said they were marking the fifth anniversary of the death of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old black man shot by London police under disputed circumstances on Aug. 4, 2011. The killing sparked Britain’s worst civil disorder in decades, several nights of rioting that spread from London to cities around the country.

Activists say black men in Britain are unfairly targeted by law enforcement and disproportionately represented among prison inmates.

Good news on employment Thumbs-up: To good news on the employment front. The U.S. Department of Labor reported this week that employers added 255,000 jobs in July, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.9 percent because more Americans are seeking and finding work.

Average hourly pay was up 2.6 percent over a year ago as well, a sign that wages might finally be growing some as the labor market gets tighter. More jobs, higher wages – let’s keep this trend going.

Thumbs-down: To the Zika virus in Illinois. This week, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported there were 46 cases of Zika in the state, including eight pregnant women. The disease, which is mosquito-borne but also has been shown to be transmitted through sexual contact, poses a particular health threat to pregnant women because it can cause birth defects. It is time for Congress to stop the partisan finger-pointing and take this public health threat seriously by appropriating funds to spray for mosquitoes and most importantly, research a vaccine.

Thumbs-up: To rehabbing and donating bicycles. Ryan Loitz, 16, of Sycamore this week donated 20 refurbished bicycles to Safe Passage in DeKalb as part of a project to help him climb the ranks toward becoming an Eagle Scout. Loitz organized a bicycle drive in April with a goal of collecting 50 bicycles, and said he collected more than 100. He spent more than 250 hours on the project and enlisted the help of more than 50 volunteers including

fellow Troop 16 Scouts, to repair and donate the bicycles, as well as provide locks and helmets. Congratulations to Loitz and those who helped him for making the community a better place and helping those in need reuse unwanted items.

Thumbs-up: To sprucing up a local landmark. “Donna” the 1940s-era M5 Stuart tank on display in DeKalb’s Memorial Park near the intersection of First Street and Lincoln Highway got a new coat of paint on Sunday thanks to volunteers from the Northern Illinois University Veterans’ Association and American Legion Post 66. The tank was repainted at least once in 1981 by Boy Scouts, but it had been years since its last painting. We’re pleased to see people volunteering to preserve this local piece of history.

Thumbs-up: To the community members, police officers, firefighters and others who participated in National Night Out on Tuesday in DeKalb. National Night Out is an annual event that encourages law enforcement officers to gather with community members to build neighborhood camaraderie and a better understanding of each other. Representatives from DeKalb and Sycamore agencies were on hand at the event Tuesday in the parking lot near the Target store on Sycamore Road. With the recent spate of shootings involving police officers, a gathering such as this helps to build bridges between law enforcement officers and the communities they help keep safe.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Fiscal discipline lacking in government

To the Editor: The company I work for is a large multinational firm, with more than 100,000 employees worldwide.

Part of the business is in a slump; as a result, 35,000 families have been affected negatively.

Several executives have decided to leave for other pursuits, senior staff people have been offered buyouts, and the flexible workforce has been reduced.

The financial health of the organization remains strong. When it comes to our customers, we serve and supply them with the superior level of products and service they have come to expect.

When I hear the comments of many of our local government officials speaking of needing to raise taxes, or fees, or anything else that further charges the public, I begin to ask some basic questions. Who among the paid staff has been let go, fired, given the opportunity to pursue other venues, given early retirement? None I fear.

We read in the paper of raising the price of ambulance service (only for those that can pay), of wanting to provide a sales tax to pay for declining assessments, to replace a referendum with another (so it won’t raise your

taxes) all in order to continue to pay who? The misinformation, disinformation, spin, or just plain old lies continue.

I would like for us to recall that the federal income tax was to stop after the Depression, the state of Illinois was supposed to stop collecting tolls when construction of the interstates were paid for, the state needed to bring in gambling to support schools (then remove support from the general fund), Rockford would increase the sales tax in order to fix the roads (the money was diverted), local street and road funds were used to finance a jail.

Notice that no elected official nor publicly paid staffer has been fired or sent to jail for telling us the money is needed for one thing ... only to use it someplace else. They have over promised, overdeveloped and overspent; now they cannot deliver, and they come crying to the public to bail them out.

The time has come for the duly elected boards to exercise their fiduciary responsibility. Like big business, they need to cut underperforming executives, they need to allow for normal attrition, they need to retire some folks, and get their financial house in order, while still providing the high quality services we have come to expect.

We should see libertarians as neither of two evils Many people dislike both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton – for good reason: Both are power-hungry threats to democracy and rule of law.

But what can we do? What’s the alternative?

Fortunately, one political party wants government to have a little less power. Former governors Gary Johnson and William Weld, the Libertarian Party’s presidential and vice presidential nominees, don’t have to be smarter or more moral than Clinton and Trump (although they are) because they want to reduce the power that government has over your life.

“I want government out of your pocketbook and out of your bedroom,” Weld said in a recent Johnson/Weld campaign ad.

Sadly, the betting sites give the Johnson/Weld ticket practically no chance of winning.

Why? Most conservatives fear libertarians will weaken our defense and legalize drugs.

But Johnson/Weld don’t want to destroy our military; they just want to spend a little less. We already spend more on defense than the next seven countries combined.

Libertarians want to legalize some drugs, but drug prohibition hasn’t

worked. Kids find it easier to get marijuana than alcohol. And prohibition creates vicious criminal gangs.

The left fears that libertarians will destroy the welfare state and allow rich people to get even richer.

We would. But so what if some rich people get richer? Private charity will help the needy far better than clumsy government has. Since people hate politicians, why not elect ones who promise to leave you alone?

Clinton wants to raise taxes and increase regulations. Trump wants to start a trade war and give loyalty tests to Muslim-Americans who are already citizens.

Clinton and Trump are so eager to do bad things that they even steal bad ideas from the other party.

Hillary Clinton wants to criminalize flag-burning. Donald Trump wants to increase the minimum wage.

Democrats and Republicans each talk as if they want to protect your freedom – from the other party. They don’t show much interest in protecting you from their own parties’ failed schemes.

Johnson will get a chance to tell Americans more about the libertarian option – if he can make it into the televised presidential debates that start in

Cummings returns to pitch after 16-week stint with NASA

Northern Illinois senior midfielder Haley Cummings is the latter, and she is preparing for the 2016 women’s soccer season after recently finishing up her second internship with the famed space agency that included a 16-week stint at Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California.

She also interned at Ames Research Center for 10 weeks during the summer of her freshman year.

“There’s no words for how scary it was (on the first day),” she said. “I mean, it’s NASA. They’re the smartest people in the U.S. It was very intimidating.

According to Cummings, NASA is planning to send a helicopter to Mars in 2020 that will take pictures of the red planet and allow scientists to see the best path that the Mars rover should take. She worked on designing a test

stand for the rotor that could simulate the conditions on Mars.

She’s already earned her bachelor’s degree and is in the first semester of grad school for mechanical engineering – a path that was unexpected when she was a child.

“All the way through until I got into high school, I hated math,” she said. “I struggled with it, and I hated it, and it was hard. My sophomore year of high school, I took some classes at the community college to get credit and took a math class and it just clicked. It made sense, and I loved it. Then I took physics, and I loved that. So what can you do with math and physics? Engineering.”

It didn’t take NIU soccer coach John Ross long to realize he had a brilliant mind on his hands, calling her highly motivated, coachable and – big surprise – a quick learner.

Larsen gives O-line more than vinegar

aarkush@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS – One of the more physical Bears camps in recent memory has gone two practices without any fights.

The reason just might be that new interior lineman Ted Larsen got tired.

Larsen, a central figure in multiple scuffles over the past week, said players weren’t allowed to fight in Arizona, where he spent the past two seasons.

After making up for lost time early in his first Bears camp by engaging with Lamarr Houston and Christian Jones in heated exchanges, perhaps the novelty is wearing off. That, or he’s conserving energy in the dog days of camp.

“Yeah, then you get those fights out of your system,” said Larsen, “and then you’re exhausted and then you’re like, ‘OK maybe we’re good fighting for a couple days.’ ” Don’t worry. The Bears acquired Larsen for more than his vinegar.

“He’s a veteran guy that can execute,” offensive line coach Dave Magazu said Friday.

“We’ll do some thing and he’ll pull something out of his hat, and I just kind of look and laugh

and say, ‘There’s a guy that been around the block a little bit.’ So it’s nice to have that veteran leadership, and he’s still competing for a starting job and we’ll put the five best guys out there.”

The only member of Magazu’s unit with at least 10 starts at each of three interior positions, Larsen’s exTed Larsen perience and versatility are welcome qualities for a line expected to have five guys in different spots from Week 1 last year.

Along with Amini Silatolu, the former Panther who was activated off the PUP list Thursday, and second-rounder Cody Whitehair, Larsen gives the Bears enviable interior O-line depth – a stark contrast from the tenuous backup tackle situation.

Just don’t expect Larsen, who’s back with the second team after filling in as the starting right guard while Kyle Long recovered from a calf injury, to cede a starting position without a fight.

Larsen admitted his final season in Arizona, when he

started the first three games at left guard before Mike Iupati returned, then had to wait until Jonathan Cooper struggled to get another starting opportunity, in Week 11 on the right side, was challenging.

“As a guy who enjoys playing the game, that screws with your head. ... You just got to be ready to go whenever you’re thrown into that starting lineup,” he said, adding that he didn’t even dress between Weeks 4 and 10.

If Larsen doesn’t supplant Whitehair at left guard, he almost assuredly will be one of the seven active linemen on game days because of his positional flexibility. Ultimately, he said, leaving a team that went 25-10, including consecutive postseason appearances and a division title, along with Bobby Massie means instilling a winning pedigree and heightened expectations in Chicago.

“That’s what we’re trying to bring here is, get to where we can win 10, 11, 12 games and go the playoffs, because that makes it a lot more fun,” said Larsen. “I think (general manager Ryan) Pace has done a really good job getting the roster stocked full of guys, and I think it’s just waitAP file photo ing. “College rules are a little bit different than NFL rules. Decision making comes into play as it relates to the way the ball’s being punted at this level.

Those are all learning curves those guys got to go through. And try and put them in as many game-like situations as we can in practice. But until the lights come on, you never really know.”

Braverman returned punts at Western Michigan, and he already has had an impressive camp as a receiver. Rodgers has seen similar qualities as the offensive coaches have when it comes to Braverman’s return abilities.

“He’s got really good quickness.

He’s a tough kid,” Rodgers said, adding that Braverman’s college coach, P.J. Fleck, was with Rodgers in San Francisco a decade ago.

“He reminds me a lot of [Fleck],”

Rodgers said. “Effort’s always going to be there. The ability to make the first guy miss is something that he’s good at.

We’ll see if he can make several guys miss when we start getting to more coverage situations.”

Rodgers also has rookie draft picks to help with the coverage teams – Deiondre’ Hall, Nick Kwiatkoski, Deon Bush and DeAndre Houston-Carson.

Those four are competing with several special-teamers the Bears re-signed, such as Jacquizz Rodgers, Sherrick McManis, Josh Bellamy, Chris Prosinski and Sam Acho. Rodgers hopes the rookies can buy in to being core special-teamers the way his veterans have.

“Those guys came in the league in the same situation all those young guys did at one point. We’ve got to do a good job of coaching those young guys up so they can play at that level,” he said.

CHICAGO – Pedro Alvarez hit two solo shots to extend his homer streak and the Baltimore Orioles had 16 hits to overpower the White Sox 7-5 on Friday night and keep pace with Toronto for first place in the AL East.

Alvarez has five homers in his last three games. Manny Machado doubled in two runs and scored in the third in a three-hit night, and Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy also had three hits each to help the Orioles win for the fourth time in five games.

Yovani Gallardo (4-3) pitched six innings of two-run ball for his first victory since June 29.

The Sox’s Jose Abreu went deep for the second straight game after 32 contests without a homer, and Avisail Garcia had two RBIs. The Sox have lost seven of nine.

The Sox touched up Gallardo for two runs in the fourth, but that was it as he scattered seven hits and walked only one.

In his previous six starts, the right-hander was 0-2 with four no-de-

cisions, allowing 20 runs in 32 innings.

Zach Britton struck out three in the ninth for his 34th save in 34 chances. Abreu reached first with two outs after swinging at a low pitch that got away, then Justin Morneau grounded out to first to end the game.

Miguel Gonzalez (2-6) allowed four runs – three earned – on 10 hits in six innings in his first start against the Orioles, his former team.

Alvarez, who homered twice against the Rangers on Tuesday and once Thursday, upped his total to 18.

He has three multihomer games this season and 13 in his career. Alvarez’s drive to center in the second to put Baltimore ahead 1-0.

The Orioles extended it to 4-0 in the third. Machado lined a double to the right-center gap to drive in two runs, then he came home on Tyler Saladino’s wild throw after Mark Trumbo’s infield single.

The Sox cut it to 4-2 in the fourth on Abreu’s solo shot and Garcia’s RBI double.

Rondon just glad he’s still pitching Elbow injury in 2011 could have ended his career

OAKLAND – Just when it looked like he was on his way to full recovery from Tommy John surgery, Hector Rondon’s right elbow literally broke apart early in the 2011 season.

And his baseball career was over.

“I wanted to quit,” the Cubs reliever said. “I told the guys with the Indians, ‘I’m ready to go home. I don’t want to play baseball anymore.’ “ A starting pitcher ranked as the No. 7 prospect in Cleveland’s system

Those close to him in the Cleveland organization, including current Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins, told Rondon they still believed in him and wanted him to try one more time.

Obviously, Rondon didn’t quit. He has a 97 mph fastball and 77 career saves to prove it.

As much as anything, that part of his life and career informs this part of it.

For the past 25 months, Rondon has been one of the best closers in baseball – his 1.46 ERA and 6.5 strikeout-to-walk rate since the 2014 AllStar break even better than those of the hard-throwing All-Star the Cubs acquired early last week to take his job.

Aroldis Chapman in that span: 1.78 ERA, 3.9 strikeouts for every walk.

They have the same number of save chances, 75, in that span. Rondon converted 66; Chapman, 70.

But if Rondon, 29, wasn’t going to quit five years ago when his broken elbow told him to, he wasn’t about to flinch at this point.

“I’m not a selfish person,” he said.

“I think it’s more important for our team to win games.”

While Rondon might not be in line for the same kind of glory as Chapman, he’s in position to have as much – possibly more – influence on whether the Cubs finish October the way they plan to.

As the kind of high-velocity, command-pitching weapon manager Joe Maddon didn’t have in his bullpen before the Chapman trade, Rondon could wind up in more key, hot spots down the stretch than even the new closer – especially now that Maddon has backed off the four-out save situation that Chapman doesn’t like.

Rondon, who has five scoreless setup appearances since the trade (with four holds and a win), appears ready.

“My confidence is really good,” said Rondon, whose strong performance during his first playoff run last year seemed to carry over into

this season. “I learned from that moment. To breathe. And put my mind on pitch by pitch.”

Rondon said he’s “blessed” to have been drafted by the Cubs just after he’d begun to pitch competitively again in winter ball in 2012, after that second surgery to repair the bone that broke at the spot where the hole had been drilled from the Tommy John surgery.

He still has the large scar from the twice-opened spot on his elbow, and a screw in the bone.

All the pain from that second rehab, the months of throwing when he didn’t want to see a radar number – all the uncertainty was worth landing in this spot, he said, with the potential to help finish some of the most important games this franchise might ever play.

Whether it’s in the eighth or ninth innings.

Rondon finds it hard to imagine where he might be if he’d quit in 2011.

“Working in Venezuela,” he said.

“I don’t know.

“Sometimes life tricks you a little bit on those moments.”

bright student as soon as we got in contact with her. We knew there could be some great possibilities for her in the future,” Ross said.

One downside to the 16 weeks spent working with NASA this spring is that it limited her off season training – with her only able to run and lift weights.

“We’ll make adjustments,” said Ross, who said Cummings will likely have to do some work by herself to catch up. “When she brought this to us, there was no hesitation. It’s like, ‘You’re going to do it and we’ll figure out the details from there.’ ”As a junior last season, Cummings played

in 18 games – including 12 starts – and had a pair of assists as a midfielder.

As a sophomore, both of her goals were equalizers, one at Toledo and the other against Kent State.

Despite missing the 16 weeks this spring, Ross said he is anticipating big things from her when the Huskies open the season with a pair of exhibitions – at Drake (Wednesday) and at home against Iowa State (Aug. 15) – before officially starting the 2016 campaign against UIC on Aug. 19 in DeKalb.

“Expect a lot from her,” he said.

“Fourth-year senior, she’s a leader.

She’s learned how to be successful in Division I soccer and we’re looking for that next level that she’s going to reach.”

RIO DE JANEIRO – You can see what a triumph the Rio Olympics might be, as you laze beneath a jucara palm and stare sleepified across the city’s opal-tinted beaches, or traverse the ruined old streets that still show the faint facades of empire. There is a great world capital and host city lurking here under the tired brown fronds, if Brazil only could dig out of this economy and survive this albatross. The Olympics should build Rio up, not drive it down.

The Games have stressed a city already under stress; you can see that in the stoic faces waiting for the groaning city buses that aren’t permitted in the dedicated lanes, and the angry protests that followed the torch. But by the eve of the opening ceremonies, it was also plain what a grand if teetering metropolis this is, with its eras stacked one on top of another: imperial, colonial, belle epoch and modern.

The possibility that Rio de Janeiro bought into nine years ago is epitomized by the new shimmering winged Museu do Amanha, the “museum of Tomorrow” at the Porto Maravilha, where an old vice-ridden dock has become a splendid signature waterfront akin to Sydney or San Francisco, and where boys jump into murky Guanabara Bay heedless of the viral count.

The potential cost is in those wedged favelas, the corrugated tin and brick walls stained with the flared colors of graffiti, and the shouts of people wondering why $12 billion has been spent on white winged extensions into the future, and stadiums an hour outside of town, instead of jobs, sewers and water.

The International Olympic Committee has a responsibility to Rio de Janeiro now. Brazilians have invested heavily in these Games, despite the fact Rio has a $6 billion deficit and even toilet paper is hard to come by.

Under the best circumstances, the Olympics are a risky megaproject of questionable value to the locals. It demands massive infrastructure, and perpetual cost overruns have left a string of ghost stadiums and economic casualties from Athens to Beijing to Sochi to Rio. The right thing is for the IOC to come back to these cities some day, and give them a chance to use these stadiums again and pay it down.

Bringing the Olympics here was

not a mistake, despite the unfinished buildings and exposed pipes, and sewer water. There have been reports the IOC is unhappy, and tension is palpable between Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes, and IOC President Thomas Bach. The other day Paes commented, “Brazil cannot pay caviar bills for others.” It was obviously directed at the IOC’s affinity for five-star luxury. When asked about the remark at a news conference, Bach dropped his usual bureaucratic drone and snapped, “I know the mayor from time to time likes the kind of remarks that he considers to be a joke. ... This is ridiculous.”

But the truly ridiculous remark came from Bach. Questioned as to whether IOC’s financial model is too unwieldy and unsustainable, his reply set a new standard for arrogance. “You can say clearly that the financial model of the Olympic Games has really stood a stress test, that we hope not to stand again in the future,” he said.

Look here: The IOC has not been stressed. The people of Rio de Janeiro, amid the worst economy since the 1930s, have broken their spines and devoted every available resource to meeting Olympian demands, and somehow raised stadiums despite the lack of basic necessities in their own homes.

This fact gives the Rio Games an atmosphere unlike any before: There is a mixed undercurrent here, a skeptical pride, a political roil, and above all a juxtaposition of gorgeousness and want, existing side by side. These are an especially striated, bifurcated Olympics.

The IOC must stop draining local populaces that host the Games. The Games have become too large and costly.

There is no reason the Olympics should not go back to the cities that have taken on these massive obligations. Create a regular rotation, so that structures can be reused and the local merchants and residents have a chance to see some profit from them.

Bach clearly hinted that coming here was a mistake. But that was not the mistake. Rio’s economy was fragile and developing, with little capacity to absorb escalating costs.

Now that Rio has bought and paid for these Olympics, the IOC can help pay down the debt. It should award Rio de Janeiro another Games in the near future, when its economy is better. The only mistake would be to leave here having done nothing but take, without ever giving back.

Anthony unlikely leader

U.S. teammates listen to 2-time gold medalist

The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO – Carmelo Anthony was the last one to take the practice floor Friday, joining his U.S. teammates after wrapping up interviews where he was asked about everything from the opening ceremony to his diet.

He was in heavy demand.

With two Olympic gold medals and a chance to be the first men’s player to win three, Anthony has become the unlikely face of USA Basketball, a rise that couldn’t have been imagined 12 years ago.

This star-studded American squad, missing some big names but still ferocious, needed someone to show the way.

And like Jason Kidd, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James before him, Anthony has emerged as the ring leader inside the five rings.

“Carmelo is the veteran and a super-likable guy,” said Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan. “We got 12 Alphas in here. But he’s the leader of this team, and we follow him.”

Probably to the top tier on the medal platform.

The Americans’ journey to a probable gold begins Saturday against China, a team the U.S. drubbed by 49 and 50 points in two recent exhibitions. The matchup likely will dissolve into another lengthy layup drill, but it will give Brazil’s passionate basketball fans inside Barra Carioca Arena the chance to snap selfies and scream for every thunderous dunk and 3-pointer by players they’ve only seen on TV. Anthony, however, has warned his teammates not to take any opponent lightly. It’s a lesson he learned in his first Olympics at Athens in 2004, when the U.S. was stunned by Puerto Rico in the opener and then fell to Lithuania and Argentina while stumbling to a bronze – and worldwide embarrassment.

“He’s very open about what happened there,” forward Draymond Green said, “and he’s very open about how that pushed them into wanting to get back to the top.”

Tune in Men’s basketball: United States vs. China, 5 p.m. Saturday, NBCSN While close friends James and Chris Paul skipped Rio and a chance at winning their third golds, Anthony, the New York Knicks All-Star often criticized for not winning more and not making his teammates better, embraced the chance to take a leading role in this blockbuster.

This is an Anthony those outside his inner circle have rarely seen, a player unafraid to raise his voice on and off the floor, one who demands with compassion. After the recent police shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota and the ambush on officers in Dallas, Anthony was moved to take social action.

During the pre-Olympic tour, he organized a community event in Los Angeles to help curb gun violence, and it’s possible he and his U.S. teammates could use these games to promote causes to a global audience.

The 32-year-old Anthony said he hasn’t changed, but his actions say otherwise. Bryant and James may have been more extroverted as Olympians, but Anthony said he’s always been willing to express his opinion, provide advice or steer a straying teammate back on track.

He’s just doing it more.

“Even with those guys around, I’m

still the same and so my role hasn’t changed since 2007 when we first started creating what we wanted to create,” said Anthony, who along with Kevin Durant are the only holdovers from 2012. “Even though guys lead in their own way, that Olympic experience and the type of player that I am and the type of person that I am, it’s been easier and it’s been more genuine.”

It’s nothing Jim Boeheim hasn’t seen before. He coached Anthony for one year at Syracuse, and the U.S. assistant sees his elevated status as an extension of his personality.

“He’s the most vocal,” Boeheim said.

“They all look at him as the senior guy, and this team has a lot of guys that qualify as leaders because they all play hard, they all do the right things. That’s what leadership does, anyway.”

Although coach Mike Krzyzewski has not officially named a captain, Anthony is the one he meets with to discuss scheduling practices, team meetings and anything else that might pop up.

Krzyzewski, who served as a U.S. Army captain, believes leadership is earned.

“First of all, a leader has to lead by example,” he said. “A leader always has to have courage, and whatever the leader says, he has to back up. And by doing that, he’s trustworthy.

“I’ve always said that if your best player is a leader, he’ll be a better best player.”

And, in Anthony’s case, a third-time gold medalist.

Brief Rio police arrest Moroccan boxer on sex assault allegation

RIO DE JANEIRO – A Moroccan Olympic boxer was arrested Friday on allegations he sexually assaulted two Brazilian housekeepers in the Olympic Village.

Police said the possible attacks by Hassan Saada happened Wednesday.

The women filed a report this week, saying the 22-year-old boxer asked them to go to his room, then restrained and fondled them, chief investigator Carolina Salomao said.

It also helps people who suffer from Raynaud’s phenomenon, tension headaches and fibromyalgia.

Permit me to digress a bit about the body sensor technology, such as that used in biofeedback. Body sensors, and the machines they talk to, are electronic devices.

Like all electronics – from computers to smartphones – devices keep getting smaller and more powerful. Already there are sensors that attach to the skin and are so small you barely notice them.

They send messages about your body through wireless signals to machines that interpret them.

Some experts predict body sensors soon will have implications way beyond biofeedback. In particular, people with certain chronic illnesses may soon be constantly monitored, day and night. Examples of illnesses that may be constantly monitored include irregular heart rhythms and epilepsy. The monitoring will spot early warning signs and collect information that affects treatment.

It may sound a little like Big Brother, but it could become a valuable aid in diagnosing and treating disease. For some people, I think it will be lifesaving.

Dear Dr. K: Sometimes you recommend biofeedback as treatment. What exactly is it? What is it like to go through it?

Dear Reader: Biofeedback is a technique that helps you monitor and control how your body responds to external stimuli.

By learning to control certain functions, you can improve your medical condition, relieve chronic pain, reduce stress, or improve your physical or mental performance.

During biofeedback training, a therapist attaches sensors to your body. The type and placement of sensors varies according to what is being measured. Sensors can detect changes in everything from your heart rate, skin temperature or muscle tension to your brain-wave patterns.

The machine then translates its measurements into a form of immediate “feedback.” You might see the feedback as a blinking light, a beeping sound or a graph.

Let’s say your goal is to reduce neck, shoulder and upper back pain. Biofeedback can help you recognize when you are increasing the tension in the muscles in your back, neck, shoulders or head. Tension can increase without your knowing it. By learning that it is, you can take steps to relax your muscles before you experience pain.

Or say you are learning to control your breathing when you are in pain. Many biofeedback machines show an image of a balloon on their screens. As you breathe in and out, the balloon inflates and deflates.

The screen displays your target rate, so you can tell if you are breathing too fast. As you gain control over the target body function, you’ll be weaned off the machine.

After each session, you’ll get an assignment to practice at home. As with most skills, regular practice is essential to success.

If you would like to experience something out of the ordinary, look only at the West and North hands.

West leads the club queen against four spades. When East encourages with the nine, West continues with his second club. East takes that trick with his king and cashes the club ace, South following with the jack. How should West plan the defense?

Over East’s raise to three diamonds, South might have rebid three hearts, since it was possible that North had more hearts than spades.

But South, judging that he would do better not to spill his hand to the defenders, jumped to four spades.

Sitting West was Harry Fishbein, a colorful character who always wore a beret. If South had a diamond, a shift to that suit would work.

However, what if South were void in diamonds? A fourth round of clubs from East would promote West’s spade queen as the setting trick. But how could West get East to lead a club, not a diamond?

Fishbein discarded his diamond ace!

East also got an assist award because over two spades, he bid three clubs, not three diamonds -- clever.
