Residents opened wallets for Bernie POLL YESTERDAY’S Bernie Sanders’ populist campaign for the Democratic nomination for president clearly stirred the enthusiasm of DeKalb County residents.

No candidate or committee, federal or local, raised more money from local donors in the past year than Sanders.

An analysis of data on fundraising from OpenSecrets.org, a nonpartisan research group that tracks money in U.S. politics, shows that Sanders pulled the most money of any candidate, either Republican or Democrat, from donors living in ZIP codes that include DeKalb County from July 2015 to July 17 of this year.

A total of 90 local donors made contributions to Sanders campaign, in amounts that totaled $26,320. It was far more than the highest state committee total (Illinois Federation of Teachers, $16,363), or the highest local politician’s total (state Rep. Bob Pritchard, $13,425), and it dwarfed the highest Republican presidential total (Ted Cruz, $9,213) during the same period.

Sanders also had the broadest donor base of any candidate or political action committee in the county. The donations ranged from installment payments as small as $2, to a donation of $2,700.

In DeKalb alone, 56 people donated to the Sanders campaign, with donations totaling $18,029. In Sycamore, 13 people donated a total of more than $3,000.

But people gave to the Sanders’ campaign from all corners of the county. Multiple donors contributed in Cortland ($963), Somonauk ($957), Genoa ($565), Clare ($308) and Sandwich ($172). Single donors chipped in in Maple Park ($1,057), Malta ($690), Kingston ($340) and Shabbona ($160).

The only DeKalb County ZIP codes where no one contributed to the Sanders campaign were Hinckley and Waterman.

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson didn’t do terribly – her campaign received $6,266 from 25 donors. Her support mainly came from DeKalb and Sycamore, although she also picked up contributions from Genoa, Maple Park and Sandwich. Clinton’s local fundraising total was less than that of Cruz, who failed to carry DeKalb County among Republicans.

Unlike in the Republican race, the primary election returns on the Democratic side resembled the fundraising totals. Sanders won 66 percent of the county vote in the Democratic primary in March, to 33 percent for Clinton.

In the fundraising race, Sanders raised 78 percent of all money given directly to Democratic candidates. Clinton raised 19 percent. Martin O’Malley had one supporter who donated $1,245, for the remaining 4 percent. (The figures are rounded.)

We’ll have to check and see if the people who believed in Sanders and backed him with their money are now willing to get behind Clinton in the same way this fall.

TODAY’S TALKER Elliot Tiber, helped enable staging of Woodstock, dead at 81

NEW YORK – Elliot Tiber, an artist, screenplay writer and designer best known as the businessman who helped enable the staging of the landmark 1969 Woodstock music festival, has died. He was 81.

Tiber died Wednesday in a hospice in Boca Raton, Florida, after suffering a stroke, according to his art agent, Elisa Ball.

A New York City native and Hunter College gradu-

ate born Elliot Teichberg, his Woodstock experience coincided with his coming of age as a gay man. The festival took place just after Tiber had been present at the Stonewall uprising in Greenwich Village.

As he recalled in his memoir “Taking Woodstock,” Tiber had been leading a double life, managing his parents’ motel in Bethel and heading the town’s chamber of commerce, while spending his free time in the gay community in Manhattan.

Parent lands jobs through association with Camp Power program

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Kimberlin Carter doesn’t have to travel far to her job every morning, but the full-time, steady work she has now is a long way from the employment situation she previously faced.

Carter is one of several parents involved with Camp Power who were able to use their experience with the program as a tool to gain employment. Organizers said they have heard that a number of parents have been able to use their association with the camp to find work. The special summer camp is offered free to youth who live in the University Village housing complex.

“It’s a blessing that I was able to use them as stepping stone to get where I need to be, to gain employment,” Carter said.

Camp Power was founded in 2014 as an outlet for youth in the mostly low-income, 534-unit housing community. Organizers said it was designed to address child hunger, quell youth violence in the area and engage youth with community stakeholders in an effort to foster positive relationships with such groups as the DeKalb police.

Although Carter said she had previous work and some higher education experience, she said the connections she made through Camp Power were key to her landing a job as an activity aide at the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center.

Lisa Cumings, one of the founders of Camp Power, said that it’s not surprising that some adults also would reap benefit from the program that was particularly designed to, among other things, promote healthy eating habits and physical activity among children at University Village. She said that parents are often engaged with the camp experience – as onlookers, volunteers or employees.

“It really helped to instill some self-confidence. It gave them an opportunity to connect with key people in the community. It gave them a sense of purpose,” Cumings said. “I think it just kind of jump-started some parents to really want to keep moving forward.”

Carter, a mother of three, came to DeKalb about three years ago, in part because she has family here, but also seeking refuge from the gun violence and other struggles in her native Chicago.

She had been on a path to becoming a pharmacy tech when she made the move here.

Kimberlin Carter works in the residents activities department July 29 at DeKalb County Nursing and Rehab Center in DeKalb. Carter worked as a mentor in University Village’s Camp Power last summer and used that job on her résumé that got her this full-time job with DeKalb County.

Her new home initially offered her only temporary work opportunities, such as being a bell-ringer for the Salvation Army during the Christmas season.

Now, she works five days a week, in a job with benefits and a collectively bargained contract.

“It’s a relief that I got something permanent and stable,” Carter said.

She signed up to volunteer with Camp Power during the program’s inaugural year. Although she had experience working in child care centers and nursing homes, Carter signed on to help pick up trash after the campers ate lunch each day.

“When you volunteer at any job, it sets the pace for you to have doors open for you, especially if you’re a good worker, come on time, are willing to help and willing to learn,” Carter said.

Her work ethic didn’t go unnoticed, and last year she was hired as staff for the camp. She spent the summer as a mentor, engaging with the youngsters in various activities and – she would later discover – setting the stage for the camp

to catapult her employment situation.

“Clearly, Camp Power has made some highly positive impacts on the children in University Village and the neighborhood,” said Debbie Madeley, development director for Kishwaukee YMCA. “And the fact that parents hired to work the program were able to leverage the skills they learned to find local employment truly adds to the importance of the program.”

The YMCA has been involved with Camp Power since its inception and this year took control of the camp as its administrator. The camp is now part of the Y’s roster of programs, with support from a number of other community stakeholders – including the DeKalb Police Department.

“Camp Power staff are not only trained in running a program, CPR and first aid, but also learn customer service and other transferable skills, as well,” Madeley said.

Carter said she applied for the county nursing home job in April and listed her work with the camp on her résumé. Also,

she said, she was able to list some of the program administrators as references.

Carter said she was asked several questions about her work with Camp Power during her interview.

This year, enrollment is down a bit in Camp Power. At first, the slight decrease puzzled administrators. But Cumings said that a deeper look into the issue revealed that some parents had started working, making them eligible for the state subsidy for child care.

With the subsidy – which requires parents to be employed or in school – parents are able to have child care for longer hours than what the camp operates. The additional hours of care are more accommodating to parents’ work schedules.

Cumings said some former Camp Power families were able to enroll in the Y’s traditional day camp program because of employment and receiving the state aid.

“I’ll take that problem any day,” Cumings said. “It shows that this is what we want. We want parents to be sustainable on their own.”

Moody’s downgrades DeKalb’s credit rating

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Concerned about the city’s growing unfunded pension liabilities and declining tax base, rating agency Moody’s Investors Service has lowered DeKalb’s credit rating.

Moody’s lowered DeKalb’s credit rating one notch from Aa2 to Aa3. The downgrade could mean the city will have to pay more to borrow money in the future.

“The city’s moderate-sized $1.4 billion property tax base has declined in each of the past five years. From 2009 to 2015, the tax base declined a cumulative 28 percent, to $1.4 billion from $1.9 billion,” Moody’s wrote in a report that details the reasoning behind the decision.

Moody’s said that property tax values had started to rise again in 2016, but noted that the 1.6 percent increase was “modest.”

The rating agency gave the city credit for growing its reserves, something city officials also touted at last week’s State of the City breakfast.

“We expect the city’s financial position to continue to improve as management pursues its goal of reaching an available operating fund balance equal to 25 percent of revenues,” the report said.

Moody’s took action Monday on the city’s $30.7 million of outstanding General Obligation Unlimited Tax debt.

Along with the downgrade, it removed the negative outlook it had issued when it last reviewed the city’s creditworthiness in October 2015.

The city borrowed money that paid for part of the DeKalb library expansion project, the new police station and tax increment financing district obligations.

“The city acknowledges the downgrade and has been proactively working toward not only improving the

rating, but to strengthen the city’s fiscal health,” Mayor John Rey said in a statement.

Moody’s also noted “the city’s pension liabilities are elevated and growing.”

“On a reported basis, the combined unfunded liabilities for all three plans grew to $72.6 million in fiscal 2015 from $63.2 million in fiscal 2013,” the report said.

The report characterized DeKalb’s fixed costs as “significant.”

“The city’s fixed costs inclusive of debt service, pension contributions and other post-employment benefits was a significant 24.8 percent of operating revenues,” it said.

The rating agency listed the city’s “credit strengths” as the “institutional presence of Northern Illinois University” and its “home-rule government with considerable revenue raising flexibility.” Later on, the report noted “DeKalb’s home-rule status provides

significant financial flexibility as it is not subject to property tax levy limits, has no statutory debt ceiling, and has the power to impose a variety of taxes without voter approval.”

However, Moody’s said it would consider further lowering the city’s credit rating if the city’s reserves decline, it takes on more debt or pension obligations, and if taxable values continue to decline.

City officials are working to contribute more toward pensions. The city’s levy was raised in December 2015 to bring in $824,156 more to the pension funds to increase funding levels, officials said in a statement.

“To ensure long-term financial sustainability and strength, the city is committed to continue to try to increase the pension funding percentages and look at methods to expand and diversify the city’s tax base,” Finance Director Cathy Haley said in a statement.

Sycamore scout donates 20 bikes to Safe Passage

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Clients at Safe Passage in DeKalb will gain a new mode of transportation for their commutes to work and counseling sessions, thanks to a donation from a local teenager.

Ryan Loitz, 16, donated 20 bikes to the domestic violence, sexual assault prevention and counseling organization, as part of a project to help him climb the ranks and become an Eagle Scout. At a bicycle drive he organized in April, Loitz collected more than twice his target goal.

“The original goal for this project was to collect about 50 bikes,” Loitz said in a news release. “I’m excited to say we collected probably 113 bikes total. With the expertise of [Assistant Scoutmaster Jason] Cowan; my dad, Jeff Loitz; and other volunteers, we’ve had numerous repair days and probably spent over a combined 40 hours repairing the bikes to safe and working condition.”

Ryan has spent more than 250 hours on the project, and enlisted the help of more than 50 volunteers, including fellow Troop 16 Scouts, friends, family, local businesses and community members.

With money left over from a spring spaghetti dinner fundraiser,

“We’ve been working on this project since January and it’s very satisfying to have these bicycles ready to donate,” Loitz said. “I’m glad my project and the Axletree organization are able to help provide an inexpensive, safe and healthy way of transportation for clients at Safe Passage.”

Stephen Paul Bock, 64, of Waterman, IL, passed away on Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.

Steve was born on April 7, 1952, to Carroll and Norma (Bird) Bock in Mason City, Iowa.

He married his high school sweetheart, Kathy Askelson, on Sept. 1, 1973, in Waterman.

Steve and his wife, Kathy, owned and operated Honey Hill Orchard in Waterman. Steve was also a very skilled carpenter. He enjoyed fishing, farming, and sharing his knowledge of all things “apple.” “Pa,” as his grandkids called him, gave the best gator rides. But his greatest joy in life was spending time with his family.

Steve was an active member of the Shabbona United Church of Christ, Waterman Lions Club, Illinois Specialty Growers Association and the American Legion. He also served his country in the National Guard.

Steve is survived by his wife, Kathy, of 42 years; three daughters, Lindsay (Berk) Boehne of Shabbona, Stephanie (Nate) Lamoreux of Lanark, and Brittany (Shane) Richey of Waterman; two granddaughters, Avery and Madison Boehne; two grandsons, Lleyton and Hawken Lamoreux; mother, Norma Bock; six siblings, Linda (Brad) Estock, Karen (Ivan) Brake, Kirk (Maggie) Bock, John (Edena) Bock, Kevin (Jane) Bock, and Wanda Bock; and many nieces and nephews. He also will be

missed by his three dogs and six cats.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carroll Bock, and his sister, Melissa Bock.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Monday, Aug. 8, 2016, at Honey Hill Orchard in Waterman. Reverend James Allen of the Shabbona United Church of Christ will be officiating. Interment will follow at North Clinton Cemetery, Waterman.

Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at the Shabbona United Church of Christ, 104 E. Navaho Avenue, Shabbona.

A memorial is being established.

Funeral arrangements were completed by Jacobson Funeral Home in Shabbona.

Larry W. (Butts) Miller, age 72, of Mansfield, MO, formally of Sycamore passed away Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Rocky Ridge Manor.

Born April 21, 1944, in Sycamore. Larry was pressman for many years at Duplex Products in Sycamore. He served in the Army in 1962.

He is survived by a daughter, Julie (Jr. Mancillas) Miller DeKalb; son, Larry W. (Judy) Miller Jr., Streamwood; grandchildren, Justin (Maddie) Spangler, Michael (Blanca Ruiz) Spangler, Amanda (Jovani) Comacho and Ashley Miller; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Kendra, and Aaron Spangler, Elizabeth and Juliann Comacho; two stepsons, James (Jennifer) Boddy and Michael (Nicole) Boddy; one brother, Ronald (Cindy) Butts, Aurora, Co; two sisters, Cheryl Keller of Sycamore, and JoAnne (Greg) Miller, Kalamazoo, MT; and many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Florence Butts.

A graveside service is planned at 11 a.m.

DeKalb County Health Department to host healthy school event DeKALB – The DeKalb County Health Department will host a Healthy Start to School event today and Aug. 11.

Hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the DeKalb County Health Campus, 2550 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb.

School and sports physicals and immunizations will be available. Call 815-748-2460 to make an appointment or for information.

The health department will try to accommodate walk-ins.

Medical cards (Meridian, Harmony and Illinois Health Connect) and most

private insurance will be accepted.

On-site dental services also will be available.

SYCAMORE – A Cortland man accused of sexually abusing a young relative posted $500 bail Wednesday and was released from the DeKalb County Jail.

Jacob E. Shrader, 21, of the 100 block of South West Street, Cortland, is charged with criminal sexual abuse, a misdemeanor typically punishable by one to three years in jail.

Shrader turned himself in about 11 a.m. Wednesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. The warrant came after a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office investigation into the

alleged abuse, according to a news release.

Shrader is accused of having sexual contact with a family member between 13 and 16 years old. Police believe the incident happened April 27, 2015, in the 15000 block of South Memory Lane, Sandwich, court records Jacob E. show.

Shrader posted the Shrader $500 bail on his $5,000 bond and was released Wednesday from the DeKalb County Jail.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 26.

LOCAL BRIEFS IRS warns taxpayers of scammers Commissioner John Koskinen said in the DeKALB – The IRS is calling for taxpayers to beware of automated calls from scammers demanding tax payments on various gift cards. The federal agency said it has seen an increase in what are considered “robocalls” where scammers offer to help taxpayers settle their tax bill.

The “urgent” calls instruct taxpayers that the contact is their final warning before legal action is taken against them, and tells the taxpayer they must call back to discuss, according to a statement from the IRS about the scam.

Once taxpayers return the fake call, some are threatened with arrest, deportation or even having their driver’s license revoked, the IRS stated.

“It used to be that most of these bogus calls would come from a live person,” IRS

statement. “Scammers are evolving and using more and more automated calls in an effort to reach the largest number of victims possible.”

Payment has been demanded on iTunes and other gift cards, according to the IRS. It warns that a request to settle a tax debt in that manner is a “clear indication of a scam.”

The IRS recommends not giving out any information. Instead, report such calls to the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration online at www. treasury.gov/tigta or by calling 800-3664484.

Many artists don’t create just pictures or sculptures. They make furniture, jewelry, dinnerware or even kitchen tools and toys.

In the 1920s and ‘30s, there was a new title for these multi-talented artists: industrial designer. They redesigned existing large machines like trains or trucks, and small household goods like telephones and clocks. The result was better-looking objects that were less expensive to make. Collectors today may not have space in their homes for the largest industrial machines, but they can find examples of smaller decorative items by these famous men. A few designers to look for are Russel Wright (dinnerware, furniture, aluminum); Henry Teague (Kodak camera); Henry Dreyfuss (telephone); Lurelle Guild, (aluminumware, vacuum cleaner); Viktor Schreckengost (Cowan pottery, pedal cars, dinnerware); and Bjorn Wiinblad (posters, furniture, dinnerware, tapestries, an animated film). At a summer Rago auction, in Lambertville, N.J., a 1970s Wiinblad table and six matching chairs sold for $1,875. The black lacquered pieces had a different colorful modern design on each chair back and table top. They are large examples of Wiinblad’s talent. But his ashtrays and dishes, decorated with drawings of round-faced people in pseudo 19th-century clothes and often surrounded by vines, floral wreaths and trees, can be found online and in shops for less than $50.

Pieces were often decorated by one company on blanks bought from other companies.

CHICAGO – Illinois officials posted new forms this week for doctors and patients in the state’s medical marijuana program to reflect changes in the law, and announced Wednesday that July retail sales reached a new high at $2.9 million.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation last month extending the pilot program until July 2020 and adding two qualifying health conditions – post-traumatic stress disorder and terminal illnesses. Those changes are expected to further drive growth in the program, but won’t be reflected in retail sales until next month.

The department also posted updated information for current patients on renewing their marijuana cards and will mail renewal information to registered cardholders 90 days before their cards expire.

Dead toddler found after fire in abandoned house

CHICAGO – Authorities said firefighters found the body of a dead toddler after extinguishing a small garbage fire in the basement of an abandoned home on Chicago’s South Side.

The fire department said firefighters smelled lighter fluid in a gangway late Tuesday before finding the small blaze in the basement of the two-story house in the Englewood neighborhood.

Department spokesman Larry Langford said the fire had been intentionally set.

He said after extinguishing the fire,

Carbondale officer injured in shooting out of hospital

CARBONDALE – A Carbondale police officer has been released from the hospital after he was shot during a pursuit over the weekend.

Carbondale police said Tuesday that 26-year-old officer Trey Harris was released from the St. Louis-area hospital where he was treated after the Sunday shooting. Details of his injuries weren’t provided but police said they were serious.

Officials said he has been with the department for three years and three months.

The Southern Illinois reported Harris will require further medical treatment but can recover at home.

Harris was shot when someone opened fire from a vehicle speeding away from a shooting scene. Police said they’re looking for two suspects and the shooting is under investigation.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Their party in crisis, Republicans’ frustration with Donald Trump reached new heights on Wednesday as party leaders on Capitol Hill and inside New York’s Trump Tower scrambled to persuade their presidential nominee to abandon divisive tactics that have triggered sinking poll numbers and low morale.

Party chairman Reince Priebus appealed to the New York billionaire’s adult children to help amid new signs of a campaign in trouble.

Trump’s operation has been beset by internal discord, including growing concern about general election preparedness and a lack of support from Republican leaders, according to two people familiar with the organization’s inner workings.

One of the people said Trump privately blames his own staff for failing to quiet the backlash from his own party after he criticized an American Muslim family whose son, a U.S. Army captain, was killed in Iraq.

The inner tension comes as Priebus and handful of high-profile Trump allies consider whether to confront the candidate directly to encourage a new approach after a series of startling stances and statements. In the midst of the uproar over his continued criticism of the Khan family, Trump infuriated Priebus and other party leaders by refusing to endorse GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan’s re-election.

The officials, including one with direct knowledge of Priebus’ thinking, were granted anonymity to discuss internal strategy after one of the most tumultuous weeks of Trump’s presidential campaign.

The most powerful Republicans in Washington and New York’s Trump Tower concede things will not change unless Trump wants them to.

“The candidate is in control of his campaign,” campaign chairman Paul Manafort told Fox News Channel, highlighting his inability to control the nominee. “And I’m in control of doing the things that he wants me to do in the campaign.”

Clinton, meanwhile, kept up her assault on Trump’s business practices, holding up a Trump-branded tie as

she spoke at the Knotty Tie Company in battleground Colorado.

“I really would like him to explain why he paid Chinese workers to make Trump ties,” she told employees in Denver, “instead of deciding to make those ties right here in Colorado.”

Trump blamed the media – “so dishonest” – for growing criticism of his recent statements and his unwillingness to accept guidance from senior advisers.

Privately, however, Trump has concerns about his own team.

He was deeply upset when GOP leaders “took the other side” during his ongoing quarrel with the Khan family, one person said, and blames his campaign staff for not keeping top Republicans in line. Another person said Trump is irritated that general election planning in battleground states isn’t further along with less than 100 days until Election Day. The internal tension is complicated by Trump’s frequent travels without his senior advisers and his adult children, who wield significant influence in the campaign, the people close to the campaign said.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Sycamore council discourages public participation?

To the Editor:

The DeKalb County Board voiced concern over voter turnout and political involvement. Here, find some observations about Sycamore: At City Council meetings, citizen presentations are restricted to three minutes. Once after the former police chief ignored my appointment request, I informed the council about unenforced laws – namely the speed limits and noise ordinance – and asked the city attorney if the city was obligated to enforce its laws. He declined, giving reasons.

The council wasn’t interested and remained silent. My 1st Ward aldermen offered no support.

Three minutes elapsed. Mayor Ken Mundy cut me off. The question remains unanswered and the laws unenforced.

The mayor’s espoused re-election tenets were: Access, service and communication. Promises, promises! The mayor’s elections were unopposed.

Thumbs-down: How are citizens supposed to participate in their government when they are locked out? Where are forensics and interlocution with the council? When no members confer with or defer to the constituents? Democracy prescribes citizen participation.

Ward 1 Alderman Curt Lang was appointed to a vacated council seat and later elected, without opposition, without saying a word. What is he about?

Totalitarian leaders use that stratagem.

Campaigning is negligible. “Vote for me because – !” Four inveterate council members (Alan Bauer, Pete Paulsen, Janice Tripp and Chuck Stowe) have occupied their seats for more than a decade, rarely with opposition. The citizens can only vote for the same “lifers,” again and again.

Thumbs-up: Fortunately, other members comprehend the Founding Fathers’ precept of time in office. Patriotic fervor of a once new nation and political system has waned. Independence Day is ignored in favor of a more lucrative pumpkin parade, where citizens no longer bother to honor the passing “Grand Old Flag.”

Who, or what will, or has excited the citizens to participate? Not the council, mayor and certainly not the four members of the “establishment.”

Citizens largely accept the prevailing climate, but one day we may all regret their mindless languor and poor role models and citizenship.

Complacency and apathy are pernicious and detrimental to a representative republic. Citizens appear indifferent to the consequences. I always vote, it is my right and duty, knowing nothing will change. Help!

The board might examine its own validity and if found wanting, heed the Biblical adage, “physician, heal thyself.”

Thumbs-down: I must conclude, the Chronicle also restricts the First Amendment with its 400word limit on letters. Rebuttal?

Recognizing realities in D-428 These are hard times for property taxpayers in DeKalb School District 428, a reality that must be acknowledged by everyone.

The past five years have been a time of falling property values, almost no housing growth, and a property tax burden that has continued to grow.

School report card data from 2015, the most recent year available, shows the average teacher’s salary is $65,393, about $3,000 above the state average, while the average administrator salary is $95,606, about $5,000 less than average. District 428 officials say that average salaries since have increased to more than $70,000 a year for teachers.

The district retained about 90 percent of its teachers over a three-year average, according to the most recent Illinois School Report Card data. That’s not surprising. Teachers here make good money, and have a shorter required workday than their peers in most other local districts.

While the district has run budget deficits, teacher salaries have grown. A teacher with a master’s degree who had seven years of experience at the start of the most recent contract, which took effect in 2013, saw their pay increase 6.8 percent over the three-year life of the contract, earning $53,325 in the first year and $56,925 in the third. If they are single, they paid nothing for health insurance. For family coverage, they covered half the premiums.

During that same period, property values in the city of DeKalb have fallen 13 percent. People are leaving the area and the state altogether because of the tax liability that comes with owning a home here. While teachers’ salaries are growing faster

than the rate of inflation, private-sector wages have stagnated. School board members who are negotiating with the teachers union must stand their ground when it comes to what the school district can afford, and what parents and students should expect in terms of the length of their school day and other provided services. Property taxpayers are tapped out.

However, in their 1,100-word, July 25 email to District 428 parents, district officials seem to have overplayed their hand. The email said teachers were being unreasonable, with proposals that would harm the school district, but gave no specifics.

Most school board members, including the board’s designated spokesperson, President Victoria Newport, made no comments, just as they made no comments at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

(Board member Howard Solomon did speak out after the email was sent, and shared his thoughts with the public he was elected to serve.)

Why give the community the impression that the school board is eager for a confrontation? This makes it easier to portray them as not valuing teachers, whether that is a fair characterization or not. Our hope is that teachers and school board negotiators will recognize the realities of the area’s financial situation, just as private-sector employees must. Until there is growth in DeKalb, in terms of property value and population, how can there be salary growth?

Our fear is that the email sent by the school board last week will create public pressure to make a bad deal that will make owning property in DeKalb more expensive.

There are the three female Rangers who graduated from the toughest leadership school in the Army.

Not only did the women who earned the Ranger tab fully compete with their male counterparts throughout the course, but their actions and willingness to help their male counterparts during the most physically arduous training events also earned the respect of their peers.

These women are warriors in every sense of the word, and their physical and mental capabilities clearly demonstrate that military women are capable of competing with men when they are trained and challenged by good leaders with high standards and high expectations for their performance.

And don’t forget the 135 women who successfully graduated from the Marine Corps enlisted infantry training course in 2015, or Marine Corps 2nd Lts. Virginia Brodie and Katherine Boy, who recently grad-

uated from the Basic Officer Leader Artillery Course. Both officers graduated at the top of their class of 137 students, and both cited having leaders who supported their early aspirations to become artillery officers as the key to their success.

Unfortunately, once they leave the service, many female veterans report that their service is not valued or respected by the public.

If they show their identification cards or wear clothing with military logos, people assume that they are simply spouses or girlfriends of servicemen.

These women are indeed wives, daughters, mothers and sisters.

But they are also military leaders, warriors, academics and mentors in their own right.

As the military has evolved to develop an appreciation for the potential of women to serve in the most challenging of positions, it is also time for the American public to see these women for what they bring to the fight: brains, strength and courage. They are not victims and they are not to be sheltered from the grim realities of war because of the myth of female frailty. Their service matters.

So much for bold vows by Republican lawmakers that they had the maturity and resolve to demonstrate leadership when they assumed control of both houses of Congress in January 2015. Examples abound

where they’ve failed miserably, but this latest example should embarrass anyone who claims the Republican Party is a pro-life party.

Reports indicate a baby was born with microcephaly in Harris County last month and thus became the first Zika-infected infant in Texas.

And while the mother was apparently bitten in South America, other reports in Florida indicate that more than a dozen people have now been bitten by homegrown mosquitoes also carrying the feared Zika virus.

Should any of us be concerned?

Medical experts say different folks react different ways to the virus, with some showing few if any symptoms. The real danger is to pregnant women who, once bitten, can give birth to deformed, brain-damaged

babies. For any pro-life lawmaker, this should be a call to arms in terms of commitment to public welfare above all else.

So how did the Republican-led Congress handle it? Somewhere in the sausage-making process of forging legislation to fund not only state efforts to battle the mosquitoes but also to fund a vaccine, Democrats and Republicans got into a battle over such things as whether to restrict display of the Confederate battle flag in federal cemeteries.

This is an example of why more and more people distrust Congress: a bipartisan bill crafted in the spirit of compromise and clearly benefiting all Americans is undone by controversial riders that promptly render an entire bill unacceptable.

Yes, one can blame shortsighted

Democrats for derailing this bill, given provisions such as the Stars and Bars rider and yet another wounding of Obamacare.

But the Republicans hammering the bill into final form also decided to insert just enough “poison pills” into the process to compel Democrats to refuse it.

Surely mature party leaders on both sides could have agreed to stand-alone bills regarding controversial matters unrelated to the Zika virus – especially given the high risk to the unborn.

The irony of this from a cynically political perspective: Those most likely to suffer from the Zika virus live throughout the South – the very heart of the Republican Party’s constituency.

When it comes to the Rio Olympics, what could possibly go right?

Severson: Well, we’re finally here.

The long anticipated – and long feared – 2016 Summer Olympics begin Friday in Rio de Janeiro with the opening ceremony. I know there was a lot of pessimism leading up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, but man, Eddie, there has been so much dreadful sounding warnings coming out of Rio. There’s been body parts washing up on the beaches on which the volleyball tournament will be held, water that apparently is about the same as

If so, would you feel excited? Or would you kind of dread it?

Carifio: I’m always up for an adventure, and death trap or not, covering the Olympics – even just attending it – is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

It is fascinating all the different elements that are conspiring to make this Olympiad a potential disaster – you didn’t even mention the shoddily built stadiums and venues, not to mention an Opening Ceremonies that was to feature Giselle Bundchen being mugged, until for whatever reason they decided to scrap that idea on Thursday. There’s always something that seemingly turns the event into a disaster, just look at the last two times this country hosted. You had a bomb in 1996 and massive, massive corruption on an unthinkable scale in 2002.

But this year seems to have the makings of a one-of-a-kind fiasco.

Severson: Yeah, there’s something about arriving to the airport and seeing a banner that says “Welcome to hell. Police and firefighters don’t get paid, whoever comes to Rio de Janeiro

will not be safe.” I probably would just turn back around and return to the States. We already had that New Zealand mixed martial arts fighter get kidnapped by two guys dressed as cops. I mean, when you can’t even feel safe with what appear to be cops around, I don’t know how you sleep.

With all the red flags going around, one thing that is scary to think about is a potential ISIS-related incident.

The terror group wasn’t around for the 2012 London Olympics. I’d lean toward it not happening, but you can’t rule it out, I think. And if there was some sort of horrible incident, would you have a “show must go on” attitude? Or cut the games short?

Carifio: It would have to be a pretty terrible event to postpone or even cancel the event. Even in 1996 after the

You brought up Sochi, and as you said that went off relatively without a hitch. But security wasn’t really a concern there as it is in Rio. I think the bigger question is if something terrible were to happen, would NBC actually cover it live?

Severson: The biggest question is, does NBC ever actually cover the Olympics live?

Many Brazilians feel frustrated that the expectations are overwhelmingly negative, especially when the country has pulled off big events such as the 2014 World Cup. They argue that such accounts don’t take into account Brazilian “jeito,” or way of doing things, which includes an easy-going nature and a penchant for successfully pulling things off at the last moment. And the doomsday scenarios all but ignore samba dancing and capoeira martial arts, beautiful coastlines contrasted by mountains covered with lush jungle, stunning sunrises and sunsets, caipirinha cocktails and culinary options that range from meat-eaters’

Carifio: While they steadfastly refuse to cover the Opening Ceremonies live, they are going to broadcast all the U.S. basketball games live. However, only the gold medal game is on NBC. All the others are on NBC Sports Network, which rivals our HuskieWire HuskieTalk podcast in total viewership.

But the decision to not broadcast the Opening Ceremonies live is weird.

They start at 8 p.m. in Rio, which is 7 p.m. on the East Coast. So hurrah, we can have them live for the first time since 2010, and the first time live in the summer since 1996.

“No one throws parties like Brazil,” said Denis Eduardo, a 34-year-old travel agent from Sao Paulo traveling to Rio for the games. “People might be bashing Brazil now, as if all previous Olympics had been perfect, but it won’t be long until they are all enjoying it here.”

Brazil’s problems, however, go beyond what other recent countries hosting the Olympics have faced. Latin America’s largest economy and most populous nation is suffering its worst recession in decades. A political crisis has paralyzed the country and brought out deep polarization – which could very well translate into large protests during the competitions.

But of course we can’t. And not only are they not showing it live, they are showing three different feeds – so people on the West Coast have to wait until three hours after it airs in the East.

It was a dumb decision 16 years ago, and is even dumber now in the social media age.

Severson: I should feel more excited about the men’s basketball team – Dream Team Lite – but looking around the landscape of the other countries, it feels like the gap between America and the rest of the world is widening again. The other top teams have players that aren’t only on the back nine

of their career, they’re about to be in the clubhouse (Tony Parker and Boris Diaw for France, Manu Ginobili for Argentina.)

I can’t picture a situation that doesn’t end with the United States running the other countries out of the gym. Back in 1992, the blowout wins were fun because it was the first Dream Team and likely the best team ever assembled.

So now there are two things that I’m hoping for – that everybody comes home unscathed and that the Russian athletes that can participate end the Olympics empty-handed.

RIO DE JANEIRO – For months, fears about the Rio de Janeiro Olympics have been hogging the spotlight.

There are concerns about safety amid a surge of murders in Rio and extremist attacks in Europe and the United States. Polluted beaches and other waterways could make athletes and visitors ill, and the Zika virus has scared some competitors away.

If all that wasn’t enough, the state of Rio is so broke that months ago it stopped paying thousands of public employees; angry police have periodically been greeting tourists in the international airport with signs that say, “Welcome to hell!”

If history is a guide, however, a focus on the problems is all part of the script in the run up to the games.

Once the competitions start, most if not all of the problems fade into the background – at least for the athletes, tourists and millions watching around the world.

Such negative coverage has a “very simple explanation,” said Michael Heine, director of the Center for Olympic Studies at Western University.

“The event is about sports, but you can’t find sporting material because the whistle hasn’t gone yet,” Heine said.

“So what else do you write about?”

Coverage ahead of the 2012 Olympics in London included stories about terrorism fears and concerns about civil liberties in light of increased military and police presence. The run up to 2008 Games in Beijing put a spotlight on authoritarianism and extreme air pollution in China. In Athens 2004, there

Baseball/softball, 4 other sports make Tokyo cut: At Rio de Janeiro, baseball and softball are returning to the Olympics in 2020, while skateboarding, surfing, karate and sport climbing are joining the games for the first time.

The IOC approved the addition of the sports Wednesday for the Tokyo Games, calling it an “innovative” mix of traditional and youth-oriented events that will attract Japanese and global fans.

The five, including a combined baseball-softball bid, were put forward for inclusion last year by Tokyo organizers.

Under new IOC rules, host cities can propose additional sports for their own games. IOC members voted unanimously to accept the five sports as a package. The approval was for the Tokyo Games only.

The new sports will add 18 events and 474 athletes to the program. The Tokyo Games will now feature 33 sports and about 11,000 athletes, compared with the usual number of 28 sports and 10,500 athletes.

While men’s baseball and women’s softball – both highly popular in Japan –will be returning after a 12-year absence, the other sports will be making their Olympic debuts.

Cubs sweep Marlins on walk-off

CHICAGO – Anybody looking for a Cub to offer deep thoughts on his team’s season before the “big boy games” start in the fall probably should talk to somebody besides John Lackey.

The greater meaning of the Cubs’ strong start to the second half? The fair expectations for this team after a 7-1 homestand, with 55 games left on the schedule?

“Fair expectations?”

Lackey asked increduJohn Lackey lously. “We’re trying to win a World Series. I didn’t come here for a haircut.”

Lackey’s personal grooming schedule notwithstanding, the Cubs’ second-half resurgence is starting to take on a look of that 25-6 start to the season – if not the 45-18 finish to last season.

When an unlikely ninth-inning comeback Wednesday ended on a wild pitch that sent home the winning run in a 5-4 victory over the Miami Marlins, the Cubs had their second walk-off win in four days, a series sweep of a potential playoff opponent and a 91/2–game lead in the Central Division, pending the Cardinals’ night game.

It was just the third walk-off win of the season for the Cubs, who improved to 15-16 in one-run games with their third during this four-game winning streak.

“It’s a good way to finish the homestand,” said first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who was intentionally walked in the ninth to load the bases just ahead of Ben Zobrist’s game-tying walk with two out against Marlins closer A.J. Ramos. “We haven’t really done this much all year.

We did it a lot last year, but not this year.

“I hope this is a sign of things to come.”

If it is, it could look a lot like what came during last year’s big finish, which started at the same point in the season as this 7-1 surge did.

“It’s August, and we know that we only have pretty much a sprint left instead of the marathon to get to the play-

offs,” said Rizzo, whose club finished July by coming back from a 6-0 deficit Sunday to score three in the ninth to tie the score – that run scoring on a wild pitch – then win in the 12th on a walk-off bunt by pinch-hitting pitcher Jon Lester.

“Those kind of crazy games can roll over into some positive energy,” said Lackey, who allowed three runs in seven innings Wednesday – just one run until former teammate Jeff Mathis’ two-run, go-ahead homer in the seventh.

Miguel Montero, who has shown recent signs of stirring from his struggles this season, opened the ninth with a double, followed by a Javy Baez single and walk by pinch-hitter Matt Szczur to load

the bases.

Dexter Fowler made it a one-run game with a sacrifice fly – both runners moving up as right fielder Giancarlo Stanton dropped the ball after the catch.

After Kris Bryant was called out on a 3-2 pitch that looked suspiciously like a ball, Rizzo was intentionally walked to set the stage for Zobrist’s walk and Ramos’ wild outside pitch to rookie Willson Contreras.

“All good teams have to believe that when they’re down late in the game they can come back and win games,” said Zobrist, whose ill-advised sacrifice bunt with two on and nobody out in the eighth (trailing 4-2) wound up lost in the celebration of the ninth-inning finish. “And this series was huge for us to be able to believe that for ourselves and see it play out a little bit. “ Especially when the Cubs failed to add on to the run they scored in the eighth after Zobrist’s bunt on a 3-2 pitch, which he said he felt more comfortable doing than taking his chances on hitting a Fernando Rodney change-up he had trouble seeing. Contreras struck out, and Jason Heyward grounded out to end that threat.

Not that it mattered by the time the Cubs boarded their charter Wednesday night for this weekend’s series in Oakland – with nobody in apparent need of a haircut.

“I came here for jewelry,” Lackey said.

Sale gives up homer to returning Martinez, Sox lose

The Associated Press DETROIT – Chris Sale knew he couldn’t let up against J.D. Martinez on Wednesday night, no matter how long the Detroit Tigers slugger had been sidelined.

As it turned out, it didn’t matter.

Sale started the eighth-inning matchup with his best fastball, and Martinez drove it an estimated 434 feet into the shrubs above the centerfield fence. It was the first major league pitch Martinez had faced since fracturing his elbow June 16.

Sale said he approached Martinez the same way he would had he been playing every day.

“Nothing different at all,” he said. “I haven’t looked at it again, but I thought it was a good pitch, but he’s a great hitter

and they do things to win games. That’s what J.D. did to me.”

The homer put the Tigers up 2-1, but the White Sox still had a great chance to keep the game alive against Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth.

The Sox put their first two runners on, and Melky Cabrera moved to third on Justin Morneau’s fly out. Rodriguez struck out Todd Frazier, but walked Avisail Garcia to load the bases. Dioner Navarro grounded out to second to end the game.

“I knew he was going to be throwing changeups, and I wanted to get a good pitch to hit,” Navarro said. “I was just too anxious and got ahead of it.”

Sale (14-5) took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in an eight-inning complete game. He walked one and struck out 10.

“That’s about as sharp as he’s looked

all season,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “They got one run with a slice down the line, and the other one, you just tip your hat to J.D.” A crowd of 32,526 had done more than that, giving Martinez a standing ovation as he made his way to the plate and continuing to cheer until he took a curtain call after the inning.

“That was probably the coolest moment of my career,” he said. “I tried to go up there with a plan, but it was so crazy that I just decided to see the ball and hit the ball.”

The homer turned out to be the winning run, as Detroit won its eighth straight and moved within two games of first-place Cleveland in the AL Central.

“That was like a movie,” Ian Kinsler said. “That was something I’ve never seen before. It is certainly good to have him back.”

Quarterback Jay Cutler echoed their point, saying, “Every camp is different. This camp, you’ve got a lot of turnover on the roster, you’ve got a lot of young guys, a lot of guys that are out to prove themselves, a lot of competition in select groups where guys are really trying to earn a spot, so I think it’s good that we see that.”

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS – Danny Trevathan’s presence in the middle of the Bears’ defense will have its benefits, but his talent level might have caused offensive guard Kyle Long to miss some practice time.

“Trying to chase Danny Trevathan for like the dozenth time at a practice,” Long said of the calf injury he suffered July 28.

“Just a combination of first-day stuff, everybody’s fired up, your body’s fired up and you know you’re out there working hard, and I have to be more careful warming up and

getting myself ready,” Long added.

“I have to be ready as a professional.”

Long returned to practice Wednesday after the team’s off day and was limited.

The three-time Pro Bowler has been able to get a different vantage point of watching rookie Cody Whitehair work at left guard.

“He’s smart. He’s making progress every day,” Long said. “And he’s somebody who wants to know how to do it. And you see him working hard. And that’s half the battle.”

Jeffery dinged up: Receiver Alshon Jeffery didn’t finish practice Wednesday because of muscle tight-

ness, coach John Fox said.

“It just got tight and we’re going to be cautious with that type of stuff, especially in the hot weather,” Fox said.

Cutler said Jeffery has “done great” in camp practices after missing the OTAs in the spring.

“I think the conditioning kind of caught up with [Jeffery] a little bit today. The off day usually throws guys off a little bit,” he said. “But he started off fast today.”

QB and OC think alike: New offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains joked that he and Cutler are “probably a little more similar than maybe I’d like to be. But I do appreciate his

work ethic, his professionalism and I love the way the guy competes.”

Cutler has seen Loggains evolve into his play-caller role.

“I think he’s getting more comfortable with his role and what the team has and kind of how to use it,” he said.

The two share a competitive nature, as we’ve observed watching the fiery Loggains at practice, and Long said the intellect also is a shared quality.

“Both really smart guys from a cerebral standpoint. They’re on a similar frequency,” Long said. “... It’s like Jay and Mini-Jay in the building.”

BOURBONNAIS – Practice and training camp fights have been happening for as long as men and boys have been playing tackle football.

When there are fans in attendance, the scuffles definitely energize the crowd, and when one breaks out, it never fails to send the media scurrying to identify the combatants and parse the significance.

At their core, these camp kerfuffles are occasionally helpful, almost always dumb and always dangerous.

But according to a number of folks who actually played the game and even ended up in a couple of training camp battles of their own, they are necessary.

The reason any of this is a topic of discussion in this space right now is, six practices (four of them in pads) into the Bears’ training camp, this team already has had as many skirmishes as many have in an entire camp, and at Wednesday’s practice it appeared things might be starting to get out of hand, but coach John Fox begged to differ.

“I don’t know if it’s good or bad,” Fox said, “it’s just part of it.

“Guys lost it a little bit. I think it’ll tone down as we go. It’s like establishing your spot. It’s part of what, these

“Definitely, you could see in OTAs, it was headed in that direction,” he said. “So it’s really no surprise that we’re getting into a few scuffles out here.

“We’re trying to run the ball physically. Coaches in meetings, we’re challenging offensive guys and defensive guys. Sometimes it’s going to spill over. I think coach Fox does a good job of kind of navigating when’s too much and when to kind of push.”

Offensive lineman Kyle Long has been forced to watch from the sideline for the most part with his strained calf, but he echoed his buddy Cutler’s thoughts.

“Yeah, no doubt about it,” Long said. “You look across the ball from us, Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman, Willie Young, the linebackers, the secondary; these guys are flying around and making it tough on the offense.

“I’m excited to get out there and compete with these guys. I think we’ve responded well, but on the other side of the token, that defense is playing their butt off.”

At the end of the day, football is a violent game, and guys practicing being violent are going to occasionally begin to push and shove.

I’m not saying Fox and his team are wrong to encourage it, but it does seem off what we saw Wednesday, they might be wise to do a little more to control it.

RALEIGH, N.C. – The attorney for a former North Carolina women’s basketball academic counselor and faculty member who is accused of wrongdoing by the NCAA is pushing back against the charge – and the investigative process itself.

Randall Roden, who represents Jan Boxill, filed a 54-page response this week to an NCAA charge that she provided improper academic assistance to athletes. That was one of five charges against UNC tied to its long-running academic fraud scandal, although Roden’s response included a letter to the NCAA complaining of an “impossibly burdensome and fundamentally unfair” process for gathering and reviewing evidence in the case.

Always splashy affairs, the parade of athletes this time around will take place Friday night at Maracana Stadium with a country-by-country show of fashion, along with speeches, flag-raising and the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.

First there was the green of the English countryside, then along came the queen.

Queen Elizabeth II “parachuted” into the stadium with James Bond, the one that’s Daniel Craig. Craig played himself after a fictional trip from Buckingham Palace to the stadium in a helicopter. The queen and 007 did not actually take flight, FYI. Oh, and who lit the cauldron? Not David Beckham. He bowed out after failing to make the soccer squad.

on’t expect the opening ceremony at the Rio Olympics to match the grandeur of some in the past.

But do look for plenty of smiles, scenic depictions of the rainforest and a celebration of Brazil’s ethnic diversity.

Marco Balich, the Italian executive producer, would not disclose finer details ahead of Friday’s opener, but offered broad strokes on how the host country’s heritage will be honored.

“This is not the most grand show,” he said Monday from Rio, though he wouldn’t disclose how much money he had to spend. “This is not an opulent show compared to London or compared to Beijing, but it will be a very emotional ceremony, full of heart and very graceful.”

Balich is an experienced Olympic hand. He created, directed and produced the opening for the Torino Winter Games and served as executive producer of the closing ceremony in Sochi

and the Paralympics there in 2014.

In all, 4,800 performers and volunteers will be involved in the show built on three basic “pillars” touching on sustainability, particularly re-forestation, “smile” and the idea of “gambiarra,” the quirky Brazilian art of improvising repairs using whatever parts are available.

“Smile is the approach the Brazilians have toward life,” Balich said. “Brazil is not a grand nation. They’re saying in this ceremony, we are who we are, with a lot of social problems, a lot of crises in the political system etcetera.”

He promises a “contemporary and cool” approach, one especially inspired by native son and renowned photographer Sebastiao Salgado and his work with his Instituto Terra on property once owned by his family. Today, the land is a nature preserve, and the nonprofit raises millions of seedlings and trains ecologists.

“The message is Brazil has the last garden in the world, which is the Amazon, and we need

First, more than 2,000 drummers played the Fou, a traditional Chinese instrument. They were followed by 10,000 highly rehearsed performers after giant Olympic rings sprang from the floor of the stadium.

There were fireworks, and more fireworks, and still more fireworks, including some that were computer simulated.

Lots of openers have fireworks, but they were invented in China some 2,000 years ago, so there’s that.

SYDNEY 2000

Well, the Man from Snowy River scared the bejesus out of his horse with the crack of a whip to open this opening ceremony, followed by a little girl who conked out in the middle of the stadium to introduce a dream sequence.

But the best part was the last torchbearer, who waded into water and seemingly lit a soggy, spaceship-like cauldron on fire as she stood in the center. It was then airlifted up and up on a set of tracks amid waterfalls and fireworks.

When you’re not watching the games, why not hold your own?

Another human construction came in yellow, with mad respect for the performers in the middle who had to lean out and hang upside down as the shape of the bodies fanned out.

A “children’s show” featured legions of other humans dressed as brown bears dancing and prancing before even more legions of humans in white shorts danced and pranced on white-headed hobbyhorses.

WNIJ 89.5 FM is now presenting new local and national programs as part of its continuing effort to bring a variety of quality and relevant radio to northern Illinois.

Beginning Aug. 1, the station will launch a new schedule of programming designed in accordance with its mission to share ideas, encourage thought, give pleasure and create community.

TED Radio Hour features a voice familiar to listeners of National Public Radio. Hosted by Guy Raz, an award-winning reporter, this program is a journey through ideas based on talks given by riveting speakers on the world-renowned TED stage, the annual conference by the nonprofit organization that invites the world’s leading thinkers to discuss world-changing ideas.

Co-produced by TED and NPR, each show is centered on a common theme and injects soundscapes and conversations that bring these ideas to life.

Ask Me Another is an hour-long puzzle gameshow produced by WNYC and National Public Radio. With a rotating cast of funny people, puzzle writers and VIP guests, it features

With the addition of new programs comes an end to others: The World will be removed from the weekday schedule to bring listeners something new every weeknight at 7 p.m.

The Best of Car Talk has been a public radio mainstay but, with the passing of co-host Tom Magliozzi and a shift into syndication, stations are now making room for the next wave of iconic programs.

Bullseye and Free Range Radio will be replaced with regularly scheduled programming that will reshape the station’s Sunday evening sound.

The traditional Olympic cauldron will be a small affair. There will not be a large volume of fire as an intentional show of small and low emission, organizers said. To frame the small flame, a large sculpture by the artist Anthony Howe will appear behind it, symbolizing the sun. It will

be set in motion with spirals representing life.

The idea of the opening, always, is to showcase the host country’s culture, something that has earned oohs and aahs through time, usually also accompanied by some head-scratching as traditions and history play out.

“We are going back to humanity. We’re going back to people. The audience here, as soon as they hear the music, you stand up and dance,” Balich said.

The DeKalb Municipal Band, directed by Kirk Lundbeck, will present “A Tribute to Broadway and the Movies” at the next concert in Hopkins Park.

The performance will feature soloist Zachary Harris and take place at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Dee Palmer Band Shell in Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

Harris is a singer, songwriter and veteran soloist on the Hopkins Park stage. For the more than 10 years he has been performing in northern Illinois at restaurants, and for charity, retirement homes, churches and private events.

Harris has been featured in many

Stage Coach Players productions and performed on the Egyptian Theatre stage. He often performs at Tapa Luna in DeKalb, where he provides dinner entertainment.

On Tuesday he will sing “It’s Almost Like Being in Love” from “Brigadoon,” Jerome Kern’s “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and “On the Street Where You Live” from “My Fair Zachary Lady.”

Stage Coach Players set to present ‘Into the Woods’ DAILY CHRONICLE Opening Aug. 11 at Stage Coach Theater will be the Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine classic “Into the Woods.”

The cast of 20 has been rehearsing tirelessly to bring this modern retelling of fairy tales alive with familiar characters: Little Red and the Wolf, Cinderella and her cruel stepfamily, the Baker and his Wife, Rapunzel and her Witch mother, and Jack with his Giant.

These are not the lighthearted Disney characterizations, but a creative merging of the original stories. All of the people have deep desires for a

change in their lives and set about achieving their wishes in Act 1.

Each faces challenges and setbacks, but when Act 1 draws to a close, everyone is happy.

Complications arise in Act 2, however, and all must come to terms with the consequences and realities of what they have created. They must finally band together to save their world and in the process they learn contentment and joy.

The cast is made up of mostly newcomers to Stage Coach, but all bring great experience and talent to the stage. The Narrator, who ties all of the action together, is played by Steve Becker, who recently moved from In-

diana and brings years of experience in musical theater with him.

The Witch is played by Elenia Dokos, who is appearing in her first show since college. The Baker and his Wife are portrayed by Jun Espiritu and Nika Morton.

Maggie Madziarczyk, who last appeared as Annie on the Stage Coach stage, is playing Little Red; Emma Carpenter as Cinderella and Isiah Panke as Jack are sophomores at DeKalb High School.

Director Ryan Morton has long admired Sondheim’s challenging music and last directed his “Company” at Stage Coach in 2013. Sarah Morton, his sister, is the stage manager and John

Feken is the music director. There is a very large crew needed to create the library from which everyone emerges to tell their stories. Multiple bookcases, which morph into other scenery, must be moved around the stage all the time.

This musical sweeps the audience through many ups and downs to arrive at a “fairytale ending” that everyone will enjoy.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m.

DeKalb Municipal Band to perform at ice cream social DAILY CHRONICLE The DeKalb Municipal Band, directed by Kirk Lundbeck, will present a special concert during the annual Ellwood House Ice Cream Social on Sunday.

Soprano Christine Monteiro will be the featured soloist for the performance, which takes place at

2:30 p.m.

Monteiro is the director of the Celebration Chorale and the female vocalist and lead trumpet for Jazz in Progress. She holds a bachelor’s degree in vocal music performance from Northern Illinois University, and has been a featured vocalist with the DeKalb Municipal Band, Kishwaukee

Symphony Orchestra, the Kishwaukee Concert Band, the Stateline Music Foundation Festival Chorus, Chicago Sinfonietta and the DeKalb Festival Chorus, along with several area church choirs.

The Municipal Band will play a variety of music Sunday, including “Barber of Seville,” “Holiday for Winds,” “Chit Chat Polka,”

“Blue Danube Waltz,” “The Syncopated Clock” and old-time tunes and patriotic melodies.

Dietary guidelines need tweaking Dear Dr. K: I’m at an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Will the new dietary guidelines help keep my heart healthy?

Dear Reader: In late 2015, the U.S. government issued a new edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This report helps Americans make healthy food choices. But if you’re concerned about having a heart attack or stroke, the advice in the latest update doesn’t entirely agree with what many nutrition experts – as well as the American Heart Association – recommend.

I spoke with my colleague Dr. Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He shared his thoughts about where the new guidelines might not be aggressive enough for people at risk for heart disease. Here’s our advice on four dietary components: • Red meat. The guidelines say: A healthy eating pattern includes a variety of protein foods, including seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, legumes (beans and peas), nuts, seeds and soy products.

We say: Grouping lean red meat with other types of protein is wrong. The health implications from these foods are very different. Many people assume the saturated fat in beef, lamb and pork is the main problem. That’s certainly one problem. But lean red meat also contains cholesterol, heme iron and other components that likely contribute to heart disease risk. If you like red meat, enjoy it only occasionally as a special treat.

• Sugar. The guidelines say: Consume less than 10 percent of calories a day from added sugars.

But the upper limit suggested by the AHA – about 5 percent of calories – is better than the 10 percent recommended by the guidelines. That translates to about 6 teaspoons of sugar a day for women and 9 teaspoons a day for men.

• Salt. The guidelines say: Consume less than 2,300 milligrams a day of sodium.

We say: Excess sodium is closely tied to high blood pressure – a major risk factor for heart disease. You’re better off aiming for the 1,500 mg of sodium a day recommended by the AHA. • Cholesterol (and eggs). The guidelines say: No specific limit on cholesterol. (Earlier guidelines recommended a limit of 300 mg a day.)

We say: For your heart’s sake, limit eggs to no more than three a week – especially if you have diabetes.

Remember, this advice applies to people at increased risk for a heart attack or a stroke – not to everyone. The factors that increase a person’s risk include age, gender, close relatives with heart disease or stroke, high blood pressure, high total cholesterol or LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, diabetes or prediabetes, or metabolic syndrome. DEAR ABBY visit my grandmother out of Jeanne state once a year.

Phillips After our visits, I usually leave feeling defeated. A few reasons why: She leaves multiple notes around “reminding” us to clean up after ourselves. There’s a note in the shower that says, “Please wipe down shower walls after use.” She asks me to change the sheets or launder our towels before I leave. Although she has decorative paper hand towels in the bathrooms, she asks us not to use them because they are “too expensive.”

She complains about my son’s handprints on her windows (he’s 2). She badmouths nearly everyone she knows, has unsolicited advice on everything and generally is highly judgmental.

When we return home, she gushes about our visit for months, saying how “lonely” she is now we’re gone and how much she enjoyed our visit. I don’t understand. Is this normal grandmother behavior, or does she take it too far?

Must we continue spending big bucks to go out there every year, or can we just send pictures and call often? – Granddaughter In A Quandary Dear Granddaughter: It’s not unheard of for a hostess to leave a note asking that the shower be wiped down, or the sheets and towels be laundered before a guest leaves – particularly if the guests are family members. A gracious guest wouldn’t mind doing those things.

Rather than stew when she complained about your 2-year-old’s handprints on her windows, the appropriate response would have been: “You know, you’re right. I’ll get the Windex.” And when she made a negative comment about someone, you should have found something nice to say about the person in response.

If these visits cause financial hardship, visit your grandmother every other year or consider inviting her to visit you, but don’t cut her off completely. After all, she’s family, and not all family members are “perfect.”

Dear Abby: I’m a newly retired woman living alone. Today I received a phone call on my landline asking me to participate in a survey.

The first question asked was how many people are in my household.

In the past, I didn’t live alone and I didn’t mind participating in surveys. But calling on my landline makes me worry the person has access to my physical address. And being asked by some stranger for information such as my age, the number of people in my household, whether I have guns in the house, etc. makes me feel very vulnerable.

I told the caller I was not interested in participating and wouldn’t give a reason why. There has got to be a better way to conduct surveys.

South is in three no-trump, and West leads his fourth-highest spade four.

When declarer covers West’s spade four with dummy’s five, East may play third hand high because he has a doubleton in that suit. He starts an echo, a high-low.

A clever South will take that trick with his jack, not with the eight.

From East’s play, South knows that West started with the spade ace and queen. As long as East does not win a trick, declarer still has a spade stopper.

South then leads his low heart to dummy’s king and runs the club queen.

After taking the trick with his king, what should West do next?

West will be tempted not to believe his partner and to cash the spade ace, thinking it will drop South’s king. Here, though, that lets the contract make. Instead, West should trust East, not South. If South still has two spades left, East must be put on lead. West should shift to the diamond nine, top of nothing.

Then East should win with his ace and return the spade two. This allows the defenders to take one club, one diamond and four spades for down two.
