Hannah Jo and her ‘village’

The African proverb explains that “it takes a village to raise a child.”

Oh, do I know this quote all too well.

Being a working mother, I need all hands on deck.

I cannot, I will not, raise my daughter by myself.

It would be impossible to play all the roles that Hannah Jo would need in order to thrive physically, mentally and socially.

Frankly, my health would suffer as well.

Because of differing perspectives, some of her main “villagers” are not a part of her life right now.

Hopefully, this can be rectified before she understands.

We all have family issues. I just wish my family would work through them instead of always putting a kibosh on communication.

People are people and will not see eye to eye on everything all the time. We need to put aside our differences to help the future generations.

Instead of going on about the unknown villagers, I am here to celebrate the wonderful village Hannah Jo knows and loves.

Daddy will always be her No. 1 dude. She just lights up when he reads books with her.

His passion for softball is already rubbing off on her. She likes to wear his baseball cap and throw the ball all the time, even in the house. He already looked into coaching Hannah Jo on her T-ball team.

I think what I cherish the most is how he treats me. Having our daughter see her dad treat her mama well is so important. Daddy never leaves without kissing mama. Daddy tries to keep mama happy in any way he possibly can. Hannah Jo will learn what it is like to be treated like a lady, because her father does just that for her mother.

Our baby sitter, Tracy, plays an integral part in my daughter’s development. She is amazing.

Playing music along with drawing is a daily routine. My being a first-time mother, Tracy also reassures me what is “normal” behav-

Now that Hannah Jo is 21/2, we are going to start the journey of potty training. I couldn’t do this without Tracy’s knowledge and skills. Having a caregiver that I trust allows me to give my all to teaching.

We live in the most amazing court. The neighbors have kids around the same age, and while the kids play, we do too. Enjoying the sunshine and random bonfires builds a sense of social community that cannot be bought.

Laughing and helping each other care for our pets establishes responsibility while providing positive role models that are close to home.

Finally, I want to rejoice for the villagers who have watched Hannah Jo while we have been on vacation. Last year we went to Punta Cana, and her aunt was just wonderful. Being carefree for five days brought life back into my husband and me.

Hannah Jo’s grandma and grandpa also will be watching her for us while we renew ourselves in Las Vegas. While we are away, I am so thankful our daughter has learned to find comfort in both her aunt and grandparents.

Being a parent is very rewarding. However, we might go crazy if we didn’t have our “village” to rely on. Hannah Jo is so lucky to have the family and friends that love her so much. I cannot thank them enough.

Hundreds attend D-428 meeting after email critical of teachers union

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – More than 200 people attended Tuesday’s District 428 school board meeting, with many indignant at a recent email district officials sent to parents last week criticizing the teachers union for its demands as part of collective bargaining.

Several people at the meeting wore T-shirts supporting the teachers union, which is known as the DeKalb Community Teachers Association, or DCTA. Parents and former students who spoke characterized the district’s teachers as “heroes” who spend more time thinking about and working for their students than the school board gives them credit for.

“The image that you painted for me [about teachers] in that email is that all they want is money and they don’t want to spend time with my children.

And that’s beyond what I have witnessed,” said Carie Schultz, who has a fourth-grader at Founders Elementary School and a seventh-grader at Huntley Middle School.

The meeting was moved from its

regular location at the school district’s Education Center to the DeKalb High School auditorium. District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller said he got wind late last week that a crowd of teachers, parents and others who support the teachers and the union, would be at the meeting. So the venue was changed. He said the new, larger location was more accommodating for the crowd.

Several members of the crowd spoke publicly.

Tempers have flared between the board and the teachers union, which represents more than 430 school district teachers, counselors, nurses and other professionals.

Reportedly, contract negotiations have reached an impasse. According to a fiery email school district officials sent to parents July 25, there has been no movement on bargaining after eight meetings and four mediation sessions between the two groups.

Pay and benefits appear to be the main issues. In their letter to parents, school officials said: “... The teachers union has made a deliberate decision to not yield in their

views that they deserve unreasonable raises, while simultaneously refusing to negotiate the length of the school day for the benefit of our students. At the same time, they do not dispute any of the facts that highlight the irrefutable conclusion that their proposals would harm the district now and in the years to come.”

No one from the union addressed the board. Most of the board members and other school officials seated at the long tables that were set up on the stage gazed stone-faced in the direction of each of the speakers.

School board President Victoria Newport gave instructions at the start of the meeting that audience members could not applaud, outburst or give other audible reactions to comments. Several times her directives were ignored, but the meeting remained orderly.

People like resident and former District 428 teacher and administrator Joe Locascio said he could see the issue from both sides. He began his comments by praising the elected, unpaid school board members for their time and service. Then he lit into them for distributing last week’s letter.

“Like many others in this community, we found this email to be unwarranted and provocative in its castigation of our teachers. The sentiments expressed should never have been uttered,” said Locascio, a former humanities teacher at DeKalb High School and assistant superintendent of schools.

Tom Burski said the four-page letter was tantamount to union-bashing.

“I am hoping this wasn’t your intent. If this letter was the board’s creation, shame on you,” said Burski, who said he was a former principal of several district elementary schools. “If this letter was the efforts of our district attorney or administration, you should consider replacing them.”

Others in the crowd voiced support for the board’s perspective that the district can’t afford to offer teachers much more in salaries.

“The problem is, we’re bankrupt,” said Jim Mason, whose rental property company, Mason Properties, is one of the largest property taxpayers in the city of DeKalb.

DeKalb resident Charles Hillier also voiced his view that currently “the taxpayers are squeezed to death.”

Kids practice safety skills on National Night Out

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Law enforcement and fire officials gathered Tuesday at National Night Out to shake hands with local children and offer them a seat in a siren-blaring police car.

People across the country joined their respective police and fire officials Tuesday at National Night Out, an evening designed to foster friendly relationships between community members and their local law enforcement. With stations set up throughout the Target parking lot on Sycamore Road, families were offered insight into the duties of their neighborhood police officers and firefighters, Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault said.

“The nice thing about an event like this is you can go from department to department and see what each department brings to the table and realize what law enforcement is and public safety in general,” Theriault said. “Law enforcement and fire work together to solve different problems in different ways.”

As kids such as 11-year-old Morgan Hadley ascended the ladder from the Sycamore Fire Department’s educational “smoke house,” they returned to their parents with important information about fire safety.

JACK C. MORSCH Born: Jan. 14, 1953 Died: July 31, 2016

Jack C. Morsch, age 63, of Hinckley, IL, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, July 31, 2016. He was born Jan. 14, 1953, in DeKalb, IL, the son of Elmer John Jr. and Elizabeth (Swanson) Morsch.

Jack was united in marriage Nov. 28, 1981, to Teresa Buckner, and they spent the next 35 years of their lives together. He was a longtime dairy farmer in Hinckley, IL, and member of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau.

He also served on the Oak Mound Cemetery Board. Jack was a loving husband, father, son, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Terry Morsch of Hinckley, IL; his children, Laura (Rajesh) Morsch-Babu of Denver, Amanda Morsch of Chicago, Hannah Morsch of Urbana, IL, and Jacob Morsch of Hinckley; his mother, Betty Morsch of Rockford, IL; two sisters, Pam (Greg) Parsons of Rockford and Debbie (Greg) Castle of Birmingham, MI; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer John Morsch on June 11, 2001, and his daughter, Kelly Morsch on Oct. 27, 2013.

WATERMAN – The village of Waterman has notified residents that they may get rusty, discolored water with arsenic levels above federal standards for drinking water.

The village’s backup well is being used as repairs are being made to the village’s main well, according to a public notice from the village.

“During this time, you may experience rusty, discolored water and arsenic levels in excess of 10 [parts per billion],” the notice said.

In October 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency established a new maximum level 10 parts per billion for arsenic in public water supplies, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Drinking water containing arsenic can be harmful. Long-term exposure to arsenic at levels above health standards may increase the risk of several types of cancer, according to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

2 charged in DeKalb after cops seize 3,500 MDMA pills

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A DeKalb woman and a Chicago man face felony charges after federal agents seized about 3,500 suspected MDMA tablets destined for DeKalb.

Keyon S. Bell, 22, of the 2600 block of North First Street, DeKalb, was charged with controlled substance trafficking, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance.

If convicted of the most serious charge, controlled substance trafficking, she could be sentenced to up to 60 years in prison. Given the amount of MDMA involved, the minimum sentence could be 30 years, DeKalb County Judge Robbin Stuckert said Tuesday.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection discovered four packages containing the pills at JFK Airport in New York.

The packages, which were shipped from

Germany, were to be delivered to Bell’s apartment in DeKalb, according to police reports and court records.

On Monday, a task force including officers from Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Postal Inspectors, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Illinois University police department, Sycamore Police Department and the DeKalb PoCory May lice Department conducted a controlled delivery of one of the packages, which contained 1,000 tablets, according to court records.

Bell accepted the package and took it into her Keyon Bell apartment.

Police obtained a search warrant for Bell’s apartment and found that Bell had opened the package.

Monroe Street, Chicago, was charged with controlled substance trafficking, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, and possession of a controlled substance. Police arrested May on Monday when he came to Bell’s apartment to pick up the package. They also arrested Bell.

Bell told police that she made an agreement with May to allow him to send the drugs to her apartment in exchange for money, according to court records.

Police also overheard conversations between Bell and May during which Bell said he was going to Bell’s apartment to pick up the package. When police approached him, he broke the phone he used to communicate with Bell. Bell also told police that May had sent the packages, according to court records. MDMA also is commonly known as Ecstasy.

DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said he believed the drugs would have been sold in the Chicago area had they not be seized. The street value of the pills was

estimated at $70,000, or about $20 a pill, Redel said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Timothy Mandel asked that May’s bond be set at $1 million. He cited the seriousness of othe ffense and May’s criminal record.

Robert P. Carlson, an attorney with the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office, asked for a “reasonable bond” because the charge was for a nonviolent offense.

Stuckert set May’s bond at $300,000.

He remained at the DeKalb County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.

Mandel asked that Bell’s bond be set at $500,000 given the seriousness of the charges. Carlson again asked for a “reasonable bond” noting that Bell had only one previous misdemeanor conviction and that she was “appropriate” for pretrial release.

Stuckert set Bell’s bond at $75,000.

She remained at the DeKalb County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.

The investigation into the drugs is ongoing, Redel said.

Obama’s library a choice between 2 parks

The Associated Press CHICAGO – The two sites Barack Obama considered for his presidential library are only a mile apart in Chicago’s South Side. But the decision to build the museum in a lakefront park rather than a nearby impoverished neighborhood has left some residents worried it was a missed opportunity.

The Obama Foundation will hold a ceremony Wednesday to unveil Barack details of the president’s Obama choice of Jackson Park instead of Washington Park. For the city’s residents, there are key differences between the two historic parks, which are both near the University of Chicago.

CHICAGO – Consumer advocates encouraged Illinoisans to make their voices heard Tuesday, one day after proposed insurance rate increases as high as 45 percent were made public for health plans sold in the state under the federal health care law.

Illinois released insurance companies’ rate increase requests for 2017 late Monday, making it one of the last states in the nation to reveal what insurers have requested.

As in many parts of the country, Illinois insurers want higher premiums for next year because they have taken significant financial losses under the health law.

OAK BROOK – McDonald’s said Chief Administrative Officer Pete Bensen is retiring after 20 years with the company, marking yet another change for the world’s biggest burger maker as it seeks to transform its business.

The Oak Brook-based company said Bensen’s last day will be Sept. 2 and it will announce additional changes resulting from his retirement soon. Bensen formerly served as chief financial officer.

Obama says Trump is ‘unfit’ for presidency

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – In a searing denouncement, President Barack Obama castigated Donald Trump as “unfit” and “woefully unprepared” to serve in the White House.

He challenged Republicans to withdraw their support for their party’s nominee, declaring, “There has to come a point at which you say ‘enough.’ ” While Obama has long been critical of Trump, his blistering condemnation Tuesday was a notable escalation of his involvement in the presidential race. Obama questioned whether Trump would “observe basic decency” as president, argued he lacks elementary knowledge about domestic and international affairs, and condemned his disparagement of an American Muslim couple whose son was killed while serving the U.S. Army in Iraq.

A chorus of Republicans has disavowed Trump’s criticism of Khizr and Ghazala Khan and the Republican nominee’s calls to temporarily ban Muslims from coming to the U.S. But Obama argued that isn’t enough.

“If you are repeatedly having to say, in very strong terms, that what he has said is unacceptable, why are you still endorsing him?” Obama asked during a White House news conference. “What does this say about your party that this is your standard-bearer?” No prominent Republican lawmaker responded to Obama’s challenge.

Instead, it was Trump stunningly withholding his support from top GOP lawmakers, including House Speaker Paul Ryan. In an affront to his party’s top elected official, Trump told The Washington Post he wasn’t “quite there yet” on an endorsement for Ryan in his primary next week.

week’s Democratic convention in Philadelphia.

The Khans also appeared at the convention, with Khizr Khan telling the story of his son, U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart after his death in 2004. Khan criticized Trump’s position on Muslims and asked whether the real estate mogul had read the Constitution.

For most politicians, tangling with a bereaved military family would be out of bounds. But Trump dove in, questioning why Ghazala Khan did not speak, implying her religion prevented her from doing so, and saying he was “viciously attacked” by Khizr Khan.

Trump’s criticism was part of a familiar pattern: He can’t let go of a perceived slight, no matter the potential damage to his presidential campaign or political reputation.

Those who have worked with him say that in private meetings he can often appear amenable to putting a controversy aside. But the businessman can quickly be drawn back in by an interview, especially if he believes he’s already answered a question, or if he grows irritated by commentary on cable television.

Gov. Rauner speaks Greek to lawmakers

Remember how Hercules’ fifth task was to clean the stables of King Augeas in a single day? The home to 3,000 oxen hadn’t been cleaned in 30 years.

Some might see parallels in Springfield and Gov. Bruce Rauner. Thirty years of muck accumulated in the capital, and someone quickly needs to clean it out.

How? Term limits. The Independent Map Amendment.

Voters via petition repeatedly tried to make both of these changes, but state House Speaker Michael Madigan and Co. continue to block them in the courts using the same argument: Amendments to the Illinois Constitution through voter petitions can only change the structure and procedures of the General Assembly. Madigan’s lawyer has successfully argued that because the map amendment proposal adds duties to two other branches of state government – the executive branch’s auditor and the courts’ Illinois Supreme Court justices – that it is unconstitutional.

So Rauner is passing out shovels and hoping he can get the oxen to help him clean up. He picked a Shiloh farm and went elsewhere around the state pushing for both term limits and an independent commission, but asking state lawmakers to make those changes.

Now, those would be the same state lawmakers led for 30 years by a Chicago Democrat and who are the nation’s fifth-highest paid. Illinois lawmakers average $100,000 each when all their pay and benefits are added and hit Illinois taxpayers with a $32 million bill each year that they’ve legislated must be paid regardless of anyone else’s suffering.

They would also be the same state lawmakers who are in their second fiscal year without a state budget, have spent $7.8 billion more than we have at present and have allowed a pension deficit to pass $111 billion. Their concern about the details of the Illinois Constitution seems to vanish when it comes to that mandate that they balance the state budget.

Imagine if everyone got more pay for less work, and the work they did was incompetent. Grounds for firing?

Rauner’s pushing the right ideals, but you better hope the Illinois Supreme Court decides the people should have a say in November on at least an independent commission drawing legislative maps. At present the state lawmakers, two-thirds of whom face no election opposition, draw their districts to create safe havens for re-election rather than making compact districts of people with common interests.

Convincing the bull-headed that their time at the trough should be limited will happen about the same time that pigs fly.

To the Editor: Last year, I pointed out that the mayor of DeKalb is required to present the State of the City address to the City Council in a public meeting. I brought it up because Mayor John Rey was not giving the State of the City address to the council in a public meeting before. (For two years, he thought that merely giving this address to the Chamber of Commerce in a private breakfast for members was sufficient).

Last year, after I pointed out that the mayor was not fulfilling his obligations, then and only then did he finally give his first State of the City address to the council in a public setting on July 21, 2015. Last week, Rey gave his State of the City address to the Chamber of Commerce at a private breakfast.

It is Aug. 3 and he has still not given his required State of the City address to council and the public.

Don’t the residents who elected you, Mayor Rey, deserve to be the first to hear your State of the City address?

D-428 board has damage control ahead

Drive by the schools, and you’ll see staff cars parked outside on weekends.

The board of District 428 has my sympathy, too. How wretched that they see so little value in those that serve the students. That they demonstrate minimal esteem for their employees and send out a sad little missive to parents is almost tragic.

As long as I’m extending sympathies, I might as well include real estate agents, community members and businesses in District 428. No wonder there isn’t much interest in moving to DeKalb or community development.

It is known that the quality of a school system is important to the community as a whole, and a school district that publicly declares that its educational community has little value doesn’t seem to encourage growth and development.

I acknowledge the novelty of the board’s comparison of the teachers’ salaries to the household income. (The income figure they quoted may actually refer to the household MEDIAN income, which is an entirely different statistic than the MEAN income.) Whether or not it was the intended message, the implication was that the teachers’ salaries be set closer to the median income.

Perhaps the board members’ employers should be given the figure next time any of them seeks a raise. However, the school board in Kenilworth may not want to use this ploy since the median household income in Kenilworth is $321,808 and the average teacher’s salary is nowhere near that figure.

I think the District 428 board has some serious damage control ahead.

I see nothing positive coming out of this tactic. I would hope that they would find a way to show support for the group that is in charge of the community’s most precious commodity: its future.

To the Editor: The parents and students in DeKalb School District 428 have my sympathy. How unfortunate that they live in a district with a board that shows little respect for the educators that they, the board, employ.

How sad that the board publicly declares animosity toward the staff during contract negotiations.

The administrators in District 428 have my sympathy as well. I wouldn’t want to face a staff that has been undermined by the board of education. I don’t know how I would stir them to perform at top levels and maintain their dedication with so little appreciation. Anyone that thinks a Peg Rozhon teacher works only 180 days a year is sorely uninformed. DeKalb

VIEWS Leonard Pitts movement in North Carolina. Even Hillary Clinton, whose oratorical skills are not formidable, rose to the occasion. The history-making first woman to win a major party presidential nomination issued a stinging rebuke of her thin-skinned opponent, Donald Trump.

“A man you can bait with a tweet,” she observed acidly, “is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons.”

For all that, however, the emotional center of the convention might have been someone who wasn’t much of an orator at all, whose first language isn’t even English. With his wife at his side, Khizr Khan, a Pakistan-born immigrant, addressed the crowd. “Tonight,” he said, “we are honored to stand here as parents of Capt. Humayun Khan and as patriotic American Muslims with undivided loyalty to our country.”

Humayun, a soldier, was killed in Iraq in 2004, running toward a suicide bomber to save his men. Yet, as his father noted, if it were up to Trump, he of the hateful rhetoric, the Mexican wall and the Muslim ban, Humayun would never even have been in this country.

“Donald Trump,” Khan said, engaging the bully directly, “you are asking Americans to trust you with their future. Let me ask you: have you even read the United States Constitution?” In the thunderous ovation that followed, he produced a booklet from his pocket and held it up, saying, “I will gladly lend you my copy. In this document, look for the words liberty and equal protection of law.

“Have you ever been to Arlington Cemetery?” the grieving father demanded. “Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending United States of America. You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing, and no one!” he cried, voice rising with barely suppressed outrage. “We cannot solve our problems by build-

ing walls, sowing division.”

And one is reminded that no one believes in America’s promises – liberty and justice for all – quite as fiercely as the immigrant does.

Trump’s thesis is that we can no longer afford to strive for those promises in a world he says is more threatening and scary than ever before.

The Democrats’ response was to remind us of us. “America is great,” Clinton quoted, “because America is good.”

November, then, is not just an election, but a moment of truth. We are called to decide whether to affirm our nation’s promises, and thus validate the faith and sacrifice of families like the Khans, or whether to burn it all to ash in the fire of our own anger and fear.

And that’s something else that shouldn’t even be close.

Sex assault awareness campaign has effect

The nurse who ran the sexual assault awareness campaign at the Country Thunder music festival is reluctant to claim the credit for no sexual assaults being reported at the four-day event this year, but perhaps she and her colleagues should take the credit.

A year ago, 10 sexual assaults were reported during the festival.

There are a lot of factors that might have been responsible for the difference, but it was a remarkable difference, and we’re quite certain that the nurses and nursing students

who worked at the sexual assault awareness tent had a lot to do with it.

The festival includes camping, and there is lots of partying and alcohol consumption.

About 200 tickets for underage drinking were issued by Kenosha County Sheriff’s deputies this year.

It’s a potentially dangerous atmosphere.

Rebecca Rodriguez, a forensic nurse examiner at the Aurora Medical Center in Kenosha, who treats victims of sexual assault,

approached music festival organizers with the idea of having a sexual awareness campaign. She and other Aurora personnel were joined by volunteers from Women and Children’s Horizons and nursing students from Carthage College and Gateway Technical College in staffing the tent during the festival.

Their campaign was modeled after the “It’s On Us” sexual assault awareness campaign sponsored by the White House. The campaign at Country Thunder included a 30-second video that was shown between

musical acts. The volunteers also asked people who visited their tent to sign a pledge that they would try to do something if they saw a sexual assault occurring.

That might not seem like a lot, but those volunteers making people aware of the potential for sexual assaults did something to change the culture at the music festival. They made it safer.

We hope the sexual assault awareness campaign continues at future festivals.

In the end, it wasn’t even close.

After a GOP gathering in Cleveland that had all the incandescent joy of a biblical plague, the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia was as bracing as snow down your back on the most scalding day in August. In terms of star power (Meryl Streep versus Chachi from “Happy Days”), production value and substance, there was no contest. One was a sixth-grade talent show, the other a matinee of “Hamilton.”

If you doubt the difference could have been that stark, perhaps you’ll take the word of disaffected Republicans such as former Jeb Bush strategist Tim Miller, who asked on Twitter “why an 18-year-old watching the conventions would want to be a Republican?” Or conservative blogger Erick Erickson, who tweeted: “I’m so angry at my own party right now.”

With the first practices of training camp scheduled to kick off Sunday, the players are getting ready and enjoying the final days of relaxation before the grind of the preseason preparation gets underway.

“More training, more rehab – basically a little more training and a lot more rehab to get your body ready for more training,” senior defensive end Ladell Fleming said with a laugh Monday.

Senior linebacker Sean Folliard joked that the wear and tear of several seasons has left his body a little more sore than his younger days, but he has a better idea of how to mentally and

“This is a week just to get your body back and get yourself mentally focused,” he said. “You’re going to uncheck for a couple of days, but then you’ve got to lock in and get yourself ready for camp.”

While the players have time to relax, coach Rod Carey said the coaching staff is busy in the lead up to Sunday’s practice.

“A lot of meetings, getting ready,” Carey said. “The players will be off. ...

The Huskies open the 2016 season at 9:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at Wyoming in a game that will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network. For Fleming, the start of practice means they’re that much closer to finally getting to play in a game again.

“It’s a ton of conditioning, and when you do so much conditioning, it’s like, ‘All right, let’s put on the pads. Let’s hit each other,’ ” he said. “Then you know when you get the pads on and start hitting each other, you’re going to want to hit somebody else. It comes really fast.”

New social media rules: On Sunday, the NCAA passed new rules in regard to coaches’ interaction with recruits on social media.

In relationship to Twitter, the new rule allows coaches to retweet or favorite a tweet from a recruit who has not signed a letter of intent with the school, but the coach is not allowed to respond or comment to the recruit.

“I think it’s the NCAA catching up with how social media has expanded and grown and is right now and understanding that you have to keep some control on it, but you have to understand that you can’t pretend it’s not there,” he said.

On Monday, Carey’s account retweeted several recruits – including DeKalb star receiver and NIU commit Cole Tucker – who had received scholarship offers from the Huskies. Carey said Twitter is a good source for recruiting, but far from the most important part, and an efficient way to reach

out to fans and current players.

“It’s a tool, not just in recruiting but in engaging our alumnis, engaging our players, at times,” he said. “It’s a tool.

I’ll say this, it’s a tool, but it’s not the tool. I think that’s what people have to understand and what we try to educate people on. As soon as you think it’s the only thing, I think you’re wrong. It has to be part of what you do.”

Beebe out for season: The Huskies received bad news before the season even started, with Carey confirming Monday that receiver Chad Beebe would be out for the year with a knee injury.

Carey said Beebe, who came into the year as a true senior, will redshirt and likely return for the 2017 season.

Beebe had 13 catches for 193 yards in 13 games last season.

Melvin signs with Dolphins: Former NIU defensive back Rashaan Melvin signed with the Miami Dolphins, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Saturday.

Melvin, 26, played for the Huskies from 2008 to 2012 and split time with the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens last year. He had been on the Dolphins’ practice squad in 2014 before the Ravens signed him.

“They’re really proud of me,” he said. “They have no idea what’s going on. They went to the game for the experience. They didn’t care about the game. They didn’t know what was going on.”

In rugby, Lasike played the inside center position, the player with the No. 12 jersey.

“You’re in the back line.

It’s similar to what a fullback

and running back does,” he explained. “You’ve got to be agile with the ball in hand.”

Now, Lasike wears No. 47. He’s about 30 to 40 pounds heavier than he was as a rugby player – which is why, he explained, it’d be hard for him to transition back to playing like Patriots safety Nate Ebner, who is a member of the USA rugby sevens team for the Olympics.

While Ebner is getting ready for Rio, Lasike is focused on his new path. New Bears offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains told Lasike to expect more “21 personnel” this season – two backs, one tight end. When the Bears’ starters have been in “21” during camp, Lasike has been in the backfield.

The Associated Press DETROIT – An offensive lineman who played in the 1950s, Dick Stanfel didn’t have a lot of stats floating around to help his Hall of Fame case.

What he had was people such as Marv Levy, who were willing to stand up on his behalf.

“I realize he played so long ago that a lot of the people that are voting now don’t even remember the time, but this guy is so deserving,” said Levy, the Hall of Fame former coach of the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs. “I remember going back to Hall of Fame meetings where guys like Gino Marchetti and Artie Donovan would tell me he was

the best offensive lineman that ever played.”

Nearly six decades after the end of his playing career, Stanfel is being enshrined posthumously into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this week.

In a class of inductees headlined by more recent luminaries Brett Favre and Tony Dungy, Stanfel offers a history Dick Stanfel lesson – a chance for fans to learn about and appreciate one of the game’s standouts from the pre-Super Bowl era.

Stanfel played seven seasons with Detroit and Washington, leading the Lions to NFL championships in 1952 and 1953.

He earned All-Pro honors five times in his relatively short playing career.

“You hate to use the word technician, but he was,” Hall of Famer Mike Ditka said. “Dick was a [heck] of a football player.”

Stanfel eventually worked for Ditka, serving on his staff with the Bears and New Orleans Saints as part of a coaching career that spanned 40 years.

Stanfel died last year at age 87. He had come close to making the hall in 1993 and 2012, falling short as a finalist.

“After dad’s death, we pretty much had resigned ourselves that he would just be forgotten,” Stanfel’s son Rich said.

Instead, Stanfel was selected as a finalist again last August by the seniors

committee, a couple of months after his death. He was voted in last February and will be enshrined Saturday in Canton, Ohio, with the rest of his class.

Rich Stanfel said the family has been “ecstatic” that Dick finally made it in.

“We’re really happy to be a part of this,” he said. “It’s been pretty much an amazing ride for us right now.”

After being drafted by the Lions in 1951, Stanfel missed that season with a knee injury. He recovered from that setback and played the next four years with Detroit.

After three seasons with Washington, he ended his playing career at age 31; Redskins coach Joe Kuharich left to go to Notre Dame, and Stanfel went with him as an assistant coach.

BOURBONNAIS – The player trying to bring the fullback position back to Chicago didn’t know anything about football until five years ago. To him, football was referred to as “gridiron.”

Paul Lasike grew up in New Zealand with aspirations of being a professional rugby player.

Then, as he explains, his path changed, and now he’s in line to be the Bears’ fullback in 2016.

“We called it gridiron in New Zealand. I came over (to BYU) and I didn’t even go to a football game my first year while playing rugby,” he said.

“It wasn’t interesting until I got to Alabama.”

Lasike discovered football after his freshman year during a Mormon mission to Alabama, where football obviously is king. He returned to BYU and joined the football team, where he played three seasons for the Cougars. He rushed for seven touchdowns and caught two other scores as a senior.

As an undrafted rookie, Lasike spent last preseason with the Cardinals before joining the Bears’ practice squad for the 2015 campaign. He hasn’t played in a game yet, but he did bring his parents to Chicago from New Zealand to experience a game.

“Twenty out of the 32 teams actually use a fullback,” he said. “I didn’t know (about the history of fullbacks), but I know that you’ve just got to go out there and create push and a hole for the tailback. Seems like an easy enough job for me.”

Also an easy enough job for his relatives from New Zealand and Australia to understand when they watch Lasike play “gridiron.”

The 26-year-old has a wife and two kids who are in Sacramento, California, as Lasike makes his way through camp, where he works on fullback drills with undrafted rookie Joe Sommers. For someone without a football background or any knowledge of the game before a few years ago, Lasike certainly has gained the appreciation of what it means to be in the huddle with the starters.

“Honestly, it’s such a privilege. When they call, ‘21, the firsts are up,’ it’s just a privilege,” he said. “It’s so awesome to look around the circle and think, these are great athletes.

I would’ve never imagined in my entire life even being in that situation.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com To be college-ready, Savannah Long said she needed to finally get below the 1-minute, 2-second mark in the 400-meter hurdles.

After the prelims and finals of the AAU National Championships in Humble, Texas, the DeKalb grad and soon-to-be Southern Illinois University sprinter has done it twice.

Long set another personal record with a 1:01.54 on Tuesday in the finals of the race, taking fourth and making her an All-American. Destiny Ward of Chesapeake, Virginia, Savannah won in 59.02.

Long “I’m pretty happy I was able to get a PR [Monday in the prelims] and today,” Long said. “It’s down

about a second, so it’s pretty good.”

Long was able to travel to Texas to compete by raising money on GoFundMe, and said she was very thankful for all who donated, and said she would not have been able to compete otherwise.

She said the meet was a little intimidating but a good prep for her college career.

“It’s bigger competition, and a lot of who I went against today are going to be competing at the college level,”

said Long, who won the Class 3A state championship in the 300 hurdles this past season for the Barbs. “Plus, I’ve been trying to break the 1:02 barrier for a long time and I finally did that before college. My time needs to be a lot faster than 1:02 to be ready for college.”

Long still has the 100 hurdles to compete – with the prelims today and finals Thursday – and the 400, which has its prelims Friday and finals Saturday.

The Associated Press DETROIT – Miguel Cabrera hit his third home run in two games, Victor Martinez also went deep and the Detroit Tigers won their seventh straight by beating the White Sox, 11-5, Tuesday night.

Andrew Romine and Cameron Maybin tripled in a six-run fifth inning for the Tigers. Cabrera had three RBIs, and Anibal Sanchez (5-12) won for the first time as a starter since April 28 – a span of 11 starts. He allowed one run and six hits in six innings.

Avisail Garcia homered twice and Todd Frazier hit his 30th for the Sox. James Shields (3-6) held the Tigers scoreless for the first four innings, then got hit hard in the fifth. He had allowed only five runs in his previous four starts combined.

The Sox broke a scoreless tie on Dioner Navarro’s RBI single in the fourth. Sanchez, however, retired Charlie Tilson with runners at the corners to end the inning.

The Sox put its first two batters on in the fifth, but Sanchez picked off Tyler Saladino and worked out of the jam.

The Tigers took advantage in the bottom of the inning.

Romine, getting a rare start at third base in place of Nick Castellanos, led off with a triple and scored on Jose Iglesias’ sacrifice fly. Ian Kinsler singled and Maybin tripled into the left-field corner to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

Cabrera’s double gave Detroit a tworun advantage, and Martinez followed with Detroit’s fourth extra-base hit of the inning, an RBI double.

RIO DE JANEIRO– IOC President Thomas Bach lashed out Tuesday against those calling for the “nuclear option” – a complete ban on Russian athletes from the Rio de Janeiro Games – as he and other members blamed global anti-doping officials for a scandal that has rattled the Olympic movement.

Bach opened the International Olympic Committee’s three-day general assembly by seeking formal backing of the members for the executive board’s handling of the Russian doping scandal. After a debate lasting more than two hours, Bach asked for a show of hands, and only Thomas Bach one of the 85 members – Britain’s Adam Pengilly – voted against his position.

Despite evidence of a state-run doping program in Russia, the IOC board rejected calls for a total ban and left it to international sports federations to decide on the entry of individual Russian athletes for the games, which open Friday.

Bach again blamed the World Anti-Doping Agency for failing to act sooner on evidence of state-backed doping in Russia and releasing its findings so close to the start of the games. He said it would be wrong to make individual Russian athletes “collateral damage” for the wrongdoing of their government.

“Leaving aside that such a comparison is completely out of any proportion when it comes to the rules of sport, let us just for a moment consider the consequences of a ‘nuclear option,’ ” Bach said. “The result is death and devastation. This is not what the Olympic Movement stands for. The cynical ‘collateral damage’ approach is not what the Olympic movement stands for.”

“What is therefore not acceptable is the insinuation by some proponents of this ‘nuclear option’ that anyone who does not share their opinion is not fighting against doping,” he added.

The IOC has been roundly criticized by many anti-doping bodies, athletes’ groups and Western media for not applying a complete ban on the Russian team. Pressure for a full ban grew after WADA investigator Richard McLaren issued a report accusing Russia’s sports ministry of orchestrating a vast

doping conspiracy involving athletes across more than two dozen summer and winter Olympic sports.

“Natural justice does not allow us to deprive a human being of the right to prove their innocence,” Bach said.

Underlying the deep split between Olympic leaders and anti-doping officials, Bach said it was WADA – not the IOC – that was responsible for the doping crisis.

“It is not the IOC that is responsible for the accreditation and supervision of anti-doping laboratories,” he said. “The IOC has no authority over the testing program of athletes outside the Olympic Games. The IOC has no authority to follow up on information about the failings of the testing system.”

Israeli member Alex Gilady echoed that view.

“I think it’s not the reputation of the IOC that has to be restored, it’s the reputation of WADA,” he said.

Argentine member Gerardo Werthein also laid into WADA, saying “the failure to investigate serious and credible allegations more swiftly has left the sports movement ... in a very difficult position facing incredibly difficult decisions in an impossible timeframe.”

“At times WADA has seemed to be more interested in publicity and self-promotion rather than doing its job as a regulator,” Werthein said.

WADA President Craig Reedie of Britain, who also is an IOC vice president, spoke only at the end of debate to say he would respond today in his report about his agency’s activities.

Russian Olympic Committee President Alexander Zhukov claimed there was a political campaign against Russia and cited “discrimination” against clean athletes not connected to doping.

“I urge you to resist this unprecedented pressure that is now on the entire Olympic movement and not to let this pressure to split the entire Olympic family,” he said.

Zhukov also took a swipe at WADA. “Why should WADA not be responsible for the violations made by the anti-doping labs it has accredited?” he said.

U.S. member Larry Probst said it was wrong to attribute the problem to “international politics.”

“We have a doping problem,” the U.S. Olympic Committee chairman said. “And it’s not just Russia, it’s global. The current system is broken and we need to fix the problem.”

LeBron tells SI he’s motivated by ‘ghost’ of MJ

The Associated Press CLEVELAND – LeBron James often has avoided talking about trying to match Michael Jordan’s accomplishments. Now he’s chasing “the ghost” of arguably the greatest player in NBA history.

Fresh off leading the Cavaliers to an NBA championship and bringing Cleveland its first title since 1964, James, in a story posted online by Sports Illustrated, recently told young players at a camp in Los Angeles that his motivation “is this ghost I’m chasing. The ghost played in Chicago.”

The ghost, of course, is Jordan, who led the Bulls to six titles. James has admired Jordan since he was a kid and reveres him to this day. James typically has sidestepped questions

about being in Jordan’s elite company, and the 31-year-old tells SI he’s hoping to build on his sterling résumé.

“My career is totally different than Michael Jordan’s,” James told SI’s Lee Jenkins.

“What I’ve gone through is totally different than what he went through.

What he did was unbelievable, Michael Jordan and I watched it unfold. I looked up to him so much. I think it’s cool to put myself in position to be one of those great players, but if I can ever put myself in position to be the greatest player, that would be something extraordinary.”

Although James is only halfway to matching Jordan’s number of titles, ending Cleveland’s

drought in historic fashion – the Cavs overcame a 3-1 deficit to beat Golden State – will always separate him from other players.

“This was bigger for me than the first and the second,” James told SI, “because of everything it represents.”

James chose not to play on a fourth U.S. Olympic basketball team this summer and has spent his offseason in L.A., where he owns a home and has numerous business connections.

Woman to ask NCAA to ban sexually violent athletes

INDIANAPOLIS – A woman who said she was raped by college football players nearly 20 years ago is asking the NCAA to ban sexually violent athletes.

Brenda Tracy and her son will present a petition to the NCAA’s Board of Governors at its meeting today in Indianapolis.

Current guidelines generally allow schools or conferences to hand down such punishments.

Tracy’s son Darius said he started the petition after hearing about multiple sexual assault allegations involving Baylor football players. The petition contains more than 157,000 signatures.

As college football has evolved, the poll’s role has changed. The Bowl Championship Series led to the College Football Playoff, and at this point college football’s champion is sort of settled on the field. The AP still crowns a champion.

But it’s not just about who’s No. 1.

That’s easy to figure out these days. It’s about who’s better. This team or that team? My team or your team? My conference or your conference? The media members who vote in the Top 25 also are charged with figuring out who’s No. 2. And No. 6. And No. 12 and 14 and 21 and so on and so forth. Just because we all can agree on a champion now doesn’t mean everything is settled.

The one constant in college football

over the past 80 years has been the AP poll. It has helped link the past with the present and provided perspective.

With that in mind, the AP is using 80 years of poll data and a simple formula to bring you the top 100 college football programs of the poll era.

To determine an all-time Top 100 for the first time, the AP counted poll appearances (one point) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (two points) to acknowledge elite programs and gave a bonus for championships won (10 points).

The top five teams using those criteria: Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Alabama and Southern California.

Surely that will settle all the arguing. Right?

The Associated Press’ all-time Top 100 poll The Associated Press has been ranking the best teams in college football for the Past 80 seasons. Since the first Top 20 in 1936, 1,103 polls have been taken and 164 schools have been ranked. Minnesota was the first No. 1 in 1936. Western Kentucky was the last team to make its poll debut (in the final poll of the 2015 season). In between, Muhlenburg, NYU and Colorado College have made appearances.

NO. 2 OKLAHOMA (1,055) Total appearances: 784, 71.08 percent of all polls First appearance: 1938 No. 1 rankings: 100½ Championships: Seven (last 2000) Best full decade: 1950s appeared in 94.83 percent of polls Worst full decade: 1960s appeared in 28.57 percent of polls Poll points: The Sooners have been top-five in percentage of poll appearances in five decades (1950s, ’70s, ’80s, 2000, ’10), most of any program.

Mexican salads? Hold the tortilla shell

The Washington Post So, you run into a salad story written by a Mexican – me – and expect to see a taco salad? Not likely to happen.

There are no taco salads in Mexican kitchens. At least I have never, ever seen or heard of a taco salad either in Mexico or served in a Mexican’s home, wherever that may be in the world. I could attest to the same thing for the entire universe if it weren’t for the fact I haven’t left this Earth.

To be blunt, I do hope for a world without taco salads – and the cold and soggy taco shells of their aftermath.

Would you care for a burger-and-french fries salad with ketchup and mustard squeezed on top of dressed greens? Not I, although I would devour a bacon cheeseburger with fries any day, hot off the pan, with or without a plate.

There are fabulous tacos of all different sorts for every mood and every occasion, and there are salads, just as extraordinary and with just as many options. Mexican kitchens are a brimming source for both. Sadly, not many people are aware of the latter.

Maybe that’s because in Mexico, “ensaladas” are likely to be served more often at home than in restaurants. Typically, they’re not even referred to as salads; their names or titles tend to be based on a main ingredient – often with endearment (a sign of how much we love them), followed by the way it is cooked. A chayote squash salad with a vinaigrette might be called “chayotitos en vinagre,” while a green bean salad with tarragon dressing could be “ejotitos al estragon.”

Come to think of it, the term ensalada has been used in Mexico for any salad with some kind of lettuce, although that has started to change in the past decade or so. Nonetheless, the main point here is tacos are tacos; salads, whatever we call them in Spanish, are salads.

The taco salad must have been a fun and welcome addition to American menus when it made its first appearance in the 1960s. According to “Taco USA” author Gustavo Arellano’s authoritative research, it was the man behind Doritos, Elmer Doolin, who had the idea of making a Doritos bowl with what, in that era, was considered the contents of a taco: ground meat, sour cream and cheddar cheese. Some undressed pieces of tomato and shredded lettuce might have shown up soon after. As a very early Tex-Mex creation, it has its place in history. But luckily, we have come so much further than that hard-shell version of a taco and a salad mixed together.

Here’s what I can say about Mexican salads: They often are unique, with an exotic element in them, with playful textures and multiple layers of flavor in the vinaigrettes or dressings. Those vinaigrettes or dressings tend to be so full of sazón – which can be loosely defined as having the knack for matching and mixing ingredients and flavors – they could be eaten on their own.

Mexican salads also are surprising. You are likely to see Mexican ingredients you might expect, paired with ingredients you wouldn’t necessarily think of as belonging to Mexican cuisine.

chayote squash paired with tart Granny Smith apple and wet jicama sticks enveloped in a rich, velvety avocado dressing with a pepita (pumpkin seed) base and laced with dill. You’ll find cucumber, radish and jumbo lump crabmeat in a creamy dressing packed with mint, basil and jalapeño.

Mexican salads are so eye-opening they really help take “Mexicanness” out of the box that seems to equate Mexican food only with tacos. They also prove the point that tacos are exquisite and can shine on their own – just like our ensaladas.

Jicama, Apple and Chayote Salad With Pepita-Avocado Dressing 4 servings

1/4 cup olive oil 1/2 cup water 7 tablespoons fresh lime juice (from 3 or 4 limes) 1 clove garlic 1/4 packed cup coarsely chopped cilantro leaves and upper parts of stems, plus 1 tablespoon for optional garnish 1 packed tablespoon fresh dill, coarsely chopped, plus 1 teaspoon for optional garnish Flesh of 1 large, ripe avocado, cut into chunks 1¼ teaspoons kosher or sea salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon whole-grain mustard 1/4 cup raw, hulled pumpkin seeds (pepitas), plus 1 tablespoon for garnish 1 pound jicama, peeled and cut into julienne (matchsticks) 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored and cut into julienne 1 pound firm chayote squash, peeled and cut into julienne Combine the oil, water, lime juice, garlic, cilantro, dill, avocado, salt, pepper, mustard and pepitas in a blender; puree to form a smooth dressing.

Combine the jicama, apple and chayote in a mixing bowl; add the dressing and toss until well coated.

Just before serving, garnish with the remaining tablespoon of

pepitas, plus the tablespoon of cilantro and teaspoon of dill, if using.

Nutrition per serving: 320 calories, 5 g protein, 28 g carbohydrates, 24 g fat, 4 g saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 370 mg sodium, 12 g dietary fiber, 9 g sugar.

Crab, Radish and Cucumber Salad 4 servings

1/2 cup packed finely chopped basil leaves and tender stems 1/4 cup packed finely chopped mint leaves 1/2 cup packed finely chopped parsley leaves and upper parts of stems 1/2 cup packed finely chopped chives 2 scallions, white and light-green parts, finely sliced 1 jalapeño pepper, stemmed and finely chopped (seeded, if desired, for less heat) 1/3 cup unseasoned rice vinegar 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 3/4 cup regular or low-fat mayonnaise (do not use nonfat) 1/2 teaspoon salt, or more as needed 1 pound jumbo lump crabmeat, cartilage removed 5 ounces or about 2 mini cucumbers, quartered lengthwise and sliced into 1/4-inch pieces 4 ounces radishes or about 3 to 4 radishes, rinsed, quartered and sliced into 1/4-inch pieces Whisk together the basil, mint, parsley, chives, scallions, jalapeño, rice vinegar, lime juice, mayonnaise and salt in a mixing bowl.

Fold in the crab, cucumber and radishes just until coated; let sit for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Taste, and add salt, as needed.

Nutrition per serving: 400 calories, 21 g protein, 4 g carbohydrates, 33 g fat, 5 g saturated fat, 105 mg cholesterol, 920 mg sodium, 2 g dietary fiber, 2 g sugar.

interest of keeping the kitchen cool, I chose to use store-bought pita chips here. When they’re tossed with the salad, the dressing makes them soften just a bit while still retaining some crunch.

On its own, this salad makes for a satisfying lunch or light dinner. It’s also nice as part of a mezze spread, with hummus, roasted vegetables, olives and stuffed grape leaves. Either way, it is a tasty and healthful way to satisfy your appetite and make the

most of prime seasonal vegetables on a hot summer’s day.

Greek Salad With Crispy Pita 4 servings

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon finely grated zest and 2 tablespoons juice from 1 lemon 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon salt

Whisk together the oil, the lemon zest and juice, oregano, salt and pepper in a medium bowl to form a dressing.

Toss together the lettuce, spinach, cucumber, tomatoes, parsley and scallion in a large serving bowl. Add the feta, the toasted pita chips and the dressing. Toss well to coat and incorporate; serve right away.

Tender Green Salad With Strawberries, Cucumber, Pistachio and Basil

The Washington Post Last spring, I had a salad at the restaurant NoMad in New York I couldn’t stop thinking about. It was a light and lovely arrangement of strawberries, cucumber, basil and toasted nuts. Nothing on the plate was pickled or marinated. The salad wasn’t aggressively seasoned or complicated in any way. Yet it was absolutely enchanting.

Something so simple and so thrilling: That has been my “deep thought” as I worked through how to translate the salad to my home kitchen.

The secret, I have come to realize, is threefold: the quality of the ingredients, the way they innately complement and elevate one another, and how they are presented on the plate. The ingredient that drives this salad is the very best strawberries: the ones we wait for all year, plump with juice, deeply ruby-colored, and whose perfume greets you from across the room. Thin slices of English cucumber offer a cool, crisp contrast, and basil leaves provide a soft, fragrant accent.

painstakingly arranged, most likely with chefs’-tweezers precision. For my composed but fuss-free home-style version, no special tools are needed.

Just scatter several strawberry pieces and cucumber slices over a small pile of tender lettuce leaves that have been dressed in a honey-sweetened white wine vinaigrette. Drizzle more dressing over that, then finish with the pistachios and basil. The result is a spring salad that is as simple as it is delightful.

Tender Green Salad With Strawberries, Cucumber, Pistachio and Basil 4 servings

2 tablespoons walnut oil or extra-virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon honey 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/2 head butter, Boston or bibb lettuce, leaves torn (about 5 cups, lightly packed) 6 large or 12 small hulled strawberries, quartered if large, halved if small 1/4 English (seedless) cucumber, cut into thin half-moons 2 tablespoons shelled, unsalted pistachios, toasted and coarsely chopped 4 large or 8 medium fresh basil leaves, torn Whisk together the oil, vinegar, honey, salt and pepper in a medium bowl to form a dressing.

Toast the pistachios in a small, dry skillet over medium-low heat for a few minutes, until fragrant and lightly browned. Cool completely before using.

Place the lettuce in a large bowl. Drizzle in about half of the dressing, and toss to coat.

Divide the dressed lettuce among individual salad plates. Arrange the strawberries and cucumber slices on top, then drizzle with the remaining dressing.

Top each portion with 1/2 tablespoon of pistachios and some basil.

Nutrition per serving (using walnut oil): 110 calories, 2 g protein, 7 g carbohydrates, 9 g fat, 1 g saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 150 mg sodium, 2 g dietary fiber, 4 g sugar.

This big, beautiful bowl of goodness is a mash-up of two traditional Mediterranean salads. It gets its primary flavors from a Greek salad, with feta, scallion, dried oregano and plenty of cucumber and tomato in a lemon-olive oil dressing. And it owes its hearty crunch to a Middle Eastern fattoush, a salad that originated as a way to use up day-old pita and involves tossing shards of the toasted flatbread with dressed crisp greens, vegetables and herbs.

One of the delightful things about the accompanying recipe is there is a lot of play in terms of ingredients, so feel free to add or substitute whatever inspires you at the market or is begging to be picked from your garden.

Instead of the dried oregano, you could use fresh dill or mint, for example. Substitute red onion for the scallions, or use another variety of lettuce instead of romaine. Bell peppers and/or radishes also would be a welcome addition.

For the pita, you could use rounds of the bread, day-old or not, brushed with oil, toasted in a 375-degree oven until crisp and broken into pieces. But in the

Kingston woman gets association scholarship DAILY CHRONICLE The DeKalb County Retired Teachers Association recently awarded the 2016 IRTA Foundation Scholarship of $1,500 to Katelyn Thurlby of Kingston. The foundation awards scholarships to incoming junior and senior students who are pursuing a degree in education as well as financial aid to members in need.

Thurlby will be a junior at Augustana College and is pursuing a degree in music education. She is part of the Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble, the Cantilena Choir, the Ascension Ringers and the Augustana Concert Band. Thurlby is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, a music sorority, the Illinois Music Education Association, and the National Association of Music Education. In addition she is on the Augustana golf team.

Genoa student awarded $1.5K DAILY CHRONICLE Sycamore High School student Chase Clausen has been awarded a $1,500 scholarship from America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. In the fall, Clausen will study animal science at Iowa State University.

The future of agriculture relies on talented young people like Clausen to fill thousands of jobs in a variety of fields, such as plant science, engineering, communications, finance and more. Grow Ag Leaders raises awareness of diverse career opportunities in the agriculture industry and provides 352 scholarships nationwide to support students’ post high school ag education.

Grow Ag Leaders scholarships, administered by the National FFA Organization, are available to high school seniors and college students pursuing degrees in ag-related fields. To be considered, each applicant is required to receive endorsements from at least three local farmers.

Both FFA members and non-FFA members are eligible to apply.

With support from the Monsanto Fund, more than $1.1 million in scholarships has been awarded to students since Grow Ag Leaders piloted in 2014.

Kishwaukee College registration for the fall semester, which begins Aug. 29, is in progress.

Online registration is open to current students through the KishSOS system available in the college portal, myKC. Online registration can be completed at any time.

In-person registration can be completed in the Admissions, Registration and Records Office, Room C2100 in the Student Center at Kishwaukee College. Students should come with a list of the courses they are requesting and alternates in case first choice classes and sections are full or closed. Students registering in-person must also present a photo ID before registering.

The Admissions, Registration and Records Office is open Monday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. ARR also will host a special Saturday registration on Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tuition is due Aug. 9. Students must have fully paid their tuition bill or enrolled in the Kishwaukee College Payment Plan or signed up for the Deferred Financial Aid Payment Plan indicating that they are eligible for financial aid. Students who register after Aug. 9 must pay tuition or enroll in KIPP or DFAPP by midnight of the day they register.

New students must have filled out a Student Information Form before they can register. The New Student Information form is available on the college website and can be filled out online.

28 Perimenopause can last several years Dear Dr. K: I am in my early 40s. Over the past several months, my periods have become less regular. Sometimes my flow is lighter than normal; other times it’s heavier. Is this perimenopause?

Dear Reader: It could be, though you’re a bit young. As a woman approaches menopause, periods often become irregular. A woman is said to be in menopause after she has gone for one full year without periods.

The transition into menopause is called perimenopause. This phase begins when a woman notices changes in her cycle, usually in her mid-40s. It ends with menopause.

Perimenopause usually lasts three to five years – but it can take as few as two years or as many as eight years for some women.

A woman’s ovaries produce eggs and the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones control a woman’s periods and other processes in her body. As a woman approaches menopause, her ovaries make less and less of these hormones.

As hormone levels fall, a woman’s pattern of menstrual bleeding usually becomes irregular. A woman can have irregular periods for several months to years before her periods finally stop. Many women experience light, skipped or late periods during perimenopause. However, there also can be heavier and more prolonged bleeding during perimenopause. This may be caused by progesterone levels that drop faster than estrogen levels.

Another common symptom of perimenopause is hot flashes. A hot flash is a feeling of suddenly being hot, flushed and uncomfortable. Hot flashes come in bursts or flushes that usually last a few seconds to a few minutes. They are caused by changes in the way blood vessels relax and contract, and are thought to be related to the changes in a woman’s estrogen levels. They also might be related to brain hormone levels

As estrogen levels fall, the vagina’s natural lubricants also decrease. In some women, this causes vaginal dryness. The lining of the vagina gradually becomes thinner and less able to stretch. These changes can cause sex to be uncomfortable or painful. They also can lead to inflammation in the vagina.

Depression also may occur at a higher rate in perimenopausal women than in premenopausal women. And women with a history of depression are prone to flare-ups during perimenopause. (Though non-hormonal events such as career challenges and children leaving home may affect depression as much or more than hormone changes.) Weight gain also is common around perimenopause.

Some of the symptoms and complications of perimenopause improve with time – particularly the irregular bleeding. Other symptoms persist into menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness and depression.

We’ve discussed in this space before the belief that menopausal symptoms tend to last no more than five to 10 years might be wrong. In some women, the symptoms may last much longer.

There are some simple blood tests your doctor can perform to determine if you are entering perimenopause. I’d suggest you discuss that possibility with your doctor.

Chief among them is having sex with someone because you have been coerced. Because you feel you are “obsessed,” you might have a sex addiction.

For most players, bridge is a leisure-time activity; it is work only for the pros. However, both sometimes face a tempting play that is wrong.

Those who can resist that temptation will, in theory at least, do better.

In today’s deal, what is the tempting play that East must resist? South is in three no-trump, and West leads a fourth-highest spade four.

It was normal for North to employ Stayman to try to find a 4-4 heart fit; but when South denied a major, all North had done was give the defenders extra information about declarer’s hand.

At trick one, many an East would cover dummy’s spade five with the seven. However, when third hand’s highest card is below a nine, he should resist the temptation to play third hand high; he should give count. So, with a tripleton, he should play his lowest: here, the two. Even if dummy’s five wins the trick (declarer having started with, say, K-J-3), it will not matter.

In this deal, though, when West learns that his partner has three spades (it cannot be one, because South denied four spades in the auction), he knows South began with king-jack-doubleton. So, when in with the club king, he cashes his spade ace to drop the king and runs the suit to defeat the contract.

Note that this give-count play applies to both no-trump and suit contracts. Play low with an odd number or high with an even number.
