County gave Trump votes, not cash POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

There are reasons why many experienced political analysts couldn’t see the Trump Train barreling down the tracks to the Republican nomination for president.

Donald Trump’s celebrity and social media savvy – coupled with his showman’s ability to say things that others found inspiring, outrageous or validating – helped him to grab headlines and cultivate a fiercely loyal following (and many fierce detractors).

Through primary elections crowded with candidates – 11 were on the Illinois ballot – Trump’s believers carried him to plurality victories in one state after another.

Those advantages meant Trump didn’t have to do much fundraising, telling people that he was self-financing his campaign. (He’s actively fundraising for the general election.)

When people don’t make an effort to ask for money, most of us don’t feel particularly inclined to give them any. Hence, of the eight Republican candidates who received campaign donations from people in DeKalb County ZIP codes from July 2015 to July 16 of this year, Trump raised the least – only $558 from two donors, one each from DeKalb and Sycamore.

That’s according to my analysis of data from OpenSecrets.org, a nonpartisan research group that tracks money in U.S. politics.

Among the Republican presidential candidates this year, the No. 1 fundraiser among local donors during the period was Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. He raised $9,213 from 15 donors, the data show. He also finished second in the local vote tally, with 31 percent of the vote (4,279 votes) to Trump’s 37 percent (5,139).

It’s remarkable that Trump carried a county in which seven other candidates raised more

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Police said a group of men with semi-automatic weapons and body armor went to Wal-Mart to prepare for doomsday.

Lexington Police Lt. Jackie Newman told the Lexington Herald-Leader that officers were called to the Wal-Mart on Saturday night after people reported seeing men inside a car wearing body armor and

money. Ben Carson raised $3,605 from local residents, with the last contribution reported on Feb. 29, just two days before Carson announced he would drop out of the race March 2.

Locally, Carly Fiorina received a $2,700 contribution. John Kasich had two donors who contributed a total of $1,250. Jeb Bush received a contribution of $1,000, Scott Walker garnered $650 combined from two donors (but not a single vote), and Marco Rubio booked two contributions totaling $600.

Democrat Martin O’Malley’s campaign raised more money ($1,245) in DeKalb County than Trump, and O’Malley received only 11 votes.

Trump trounced all of them and took control of the Republican Party, with DeKalb County voters supporting him, and one of them, Denny Sands, going to Cleveland as a delegate for him.

(Sands was not the listed donor, incidentally.)

It goes to show that you don’t need to raise a lot of money to run for office – at least, not if you’re already a billionaire with a high public profile.

Police found marijuana in the car and cited the men for the drugs, but did not charge them with any other violations. Police said a license is not required to have a semi-automatic weapon in a car.

1st responders, recovered family celebrate at Sycamore council meeting

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A crowd gathered Monday at the Sycamore Fire Station to watch 3-year-old Alaya Ochoa, with a wide, toothy smile on her face, climb into the driver’s seat of an ambulance – a sight that was especially gratifying since just last month, the young girl was being whisked away in the back of one of the very same vehicles.

Sycamore Fire Chief Pete Polarek on Monday honored the nine responding sheriff’s deputies and Sycamore firefighters, and one bystander, who helped free Ochoa from a car submerged in 4 feet of water July 6.

Ochoa was in her car seat in the back seat of a 2013 Hyundai sedan that drove off the side of a bridge and landed upside down in a creek, triggering a frantic effort to free her. Sycamore resident John DeNapoli, who witnessed the accident, attempted to flip over the car, then called 911 shortly after to report that a vehicle had gone off the road and was underwater near 25086 N. First St., west of Sycamore.

Recognized at Monday’s City Council meeting were: DeKalb County Sheriff’s detective Sgt. Brad Carls, Sgt. Ryan Pettengell, Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan, Lt. Jim Burgh, detective Jeremy Grubbs, Sycamore Fire Lt. Jim Ward, firefighters Bob Maciejewski and Pat Dulzo, paid on-call firefighter Mike Tomsovic, and DeNapoli.

“They got there, they quickly assessed the scene. They confirmed what John had found and attempted what they could with what they had at hand, which was basically arm strength and some rope,” Polarek said.

Ochoa’s mother, Quaesha Johnson, was two months pregnant at the time.

She managed to free herself from the car, but Ochoa remained submerged in the water for nearly 10 minutes.

But on Monday, Ochoa was with her mother and Johnson’s boyfriend, Robert Riley, looking healthy as ever in her yellow dress, white hair bows and matching shoes that swung happily throughout the meeting.

“Everything happens for a reason, and if there was a reason that this had to happen then I’m blessed that this happened,” Johnson said. “And I’m blessed that [Alaya] got out of it and was a strong little 3-year-old to get through this. It was hard. Too hard.

every day. And to come this close to it, I can’t stomach it. Not one bit. I don’t think anybody needs to lose a child.”

Standing no more than 3 feet tall, Ochoa was all smiles and high-pitched giggles Monday at the fire station, where the family met with the first responders for cake and ice cream. The girl packed a lot of punch for someone

who officers and family were afraid might not survive such a damaging crash. On July 6, Ochoa was flown from Kishwaukee Hospital to Central DuPage Hospital and put in a medically induced coma.

“A lot of people don’t come back from it, or they don’t come back to their normal selves,” Johnson said. “Alaya’s

just like she was – like nothing ever happened, and that’s what I’m so happy about. I stare at her all day after this. I stared at her before – but to know that I have her all safe, she’s right here in my face playing and talking, and she says, ‘Mommy, I love you.’ ” Johnson isn’t the only person for whom Ochoa has expressed her love.

On the car ride from the City Council meeting to the fire station Monday, the toddler let out an emphatic “Mommy, I love them,” in appreciation of the officers and firefighters who saved her life, Johnson said.

“It just makes us so happy,” Ward said. “I think when we took her to the hospital, we didn’t know. She was unconscious. We performed CPR. It couldn’t make us any happier to see her here tonight, walking around.”

Fully recovered, Ochoa has a lot of life ahead of her, including becoming a big sister, Johnson said.

“I’ll watch her grow. I’ll watch her get married, and have children and get educated – all of that. I’m able to get that back,” Johnson said. “I almost lost it, and I’m just blessed that I am getting it back.”

County Board committees resume meetings

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After a monthlong hiatus, DeKalb County Board committees and boards are set to begin meeting again – starting this week.

Typically, the county’s 24 board members elect to not meet in July. In addition to being on the full County Board, members each serve on one or more of eight standing committees.

Only three had a July meeting scheduled: Planning and Zoning, Law and Justice and Forest Preserve.

“A lot people travel and are on vacation in the summer, so it’s harder to get a quorum. So it makes for a good break [time],” County Administrator Gary Hanson said.

He said the brief respite saves the county money but also allows for the elected officials to have family time.

County Board members got back into the swing of things Monday with the Health and Human Services meeting.

The night’s agenda included discussion of the public health tax levy referendum.

BRIEF NIU to host volunteer fair

DeKALB – Local nonprofit organizations are invited to have a table at Northern Illinois University’s upcoming volunteer fair.

The organizations will be joined by other service-oriented student organizations in participating in the event, scheduled for Aug. 21. The annual volunteer fair gives the student body an introduction to organizations that may be looking for volunteers.

“Local organizations are provided a table at the fair and are encouraged to

showcase their organization’s services and needs, as well as provide students with information and the ability to sign up for follow-up information,” reads a written statement NIU issued about the event.

There are no costs associated with the fair, according to NIU’s Student Involvement and Leadership Development, which is hosting the fair.

The deadline to sign up is Aug. 17. For information, email communityservice@ niu.edu.

The full County Board decided at its last meeting, June 15, that voters may – or may not – get to weigh in on that hot-button issue in the April 2017 election instead of the upcoming presidential election Nov. 8.

Other county government meetings this week include the Economic Development Committee meeting Tuesday night and Wednesday’s Finance Committee meeting.

The county opened its first-ever business incubator in July, welcoming its first tenants into the rented workspaces inside the Community

Outreach Building. Also, as of July 1, Lisa Gonzalez took over as head of the public health department. She replaced Jane Lux, who exited after 35 years with the health department.

Hanson said the various county department heads had until Monday to submit their respective budget information. County staff will work on the information throughout August.

In September, County Board members and committees tackle the comprehensive annual budget – ahead of an expect November vote on it by the full board.

Mosquitoes found near Genoa test positive for West Nile virus DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The DeKalb County Health Department recently collected a batch of mosquitoes in a trap near Genoa that tested positive for West Nile virus, the first time this year a mosquito trap has yielded a positive test.

“Although people usually notice mosquitoes during rainy conditions, those mosquitoes are commonly called floodwater or nuisance mosquitoes and typically do not carry West Nile virus,” the health department said in a news release Monday. “In hot, dry weather, mosquitoes that do carry West Nile virus breed in stagnant water, like street

catch basins and ditches, and multiply rapidly.”

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Most people with the virus have no symptoms of illness, but some may become ill three to 14 days after the bite. Illness from West Nile usually is mild and includes fever, headache and body aches – but serious illness, such as encephalitis and meningitis, and death are possible, according to the news release. Those older than 50 have the highest risk of severe disease.

The department provided recommendations to prevent mosquito breeding and to prevent mosquito bites.

• Wear light-colored clothing that minimizes exposed skin and provides some protection from mosquito bites.

• Make sure door and window screens fit tightly and that all holes are repaired.

• Apply insect repellent that includes DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535 according to label instructions. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

• Keep roof gutters and downspouts clear of debris.

• Keep trash containers covered.

• Fill in tree rot holes and hollow stumps that hold water.

• Change the water in bird baths and plant urns at least once a week.

BRIEF Harbor Freight Tools eyes DeKalb store

DeKALB – Harbor Freight Tools, a discount tool retailer, may be opening a new store in DeKalb.

But officials remain mum about where the store could be located and when it might open.

“At this time, we do not have a fully executed lease in DeKalb, Illinois, so we are unable to comment,” marketing manager Collin Ozar said in an emailed response Monday to

questions from the Daily Chronicle.

A recent job post said the company was looking for a retail store manager for “a new store in DeKalb.” No similar post could be found on the company’s website.

DeKalb Community Development Director Ellen Divita couldn’t be reached Monday afternoon for comment about the retailer.

MALTA – The Kishwaukee College Board of Trustees was joined by college faculty and staff as well as some special guests to dedicate the Founders Board Room at a June meeting, in memory and recognition of the first trustees, who began meeting nearly 50 years ago.

The board of trustees has met every month since before the college opened in the fall of 1968. The current board has met in Room C2175, in the Student Center, since the building opened in 2012. That room was specially designed for trustee meetings, with plenty of space for public attendance. The movement to name the room was spearheaded by current board Chairman Bob Johnson, whose father, LaVerne Johnson, was part of the original board of trustees.

After the Kishwaukee College Foundation instituted a new policy for naming opportunities at the college, Johnson thought about the original board.

“A couple of years ago, it seemed to me that it would be appropriate to memorialize the efforts of the founding board members, which included my father,” Johnson said in a news release. “I had several discussions with [then President] Tom Choice about the possibility of reaching out to heirs of the founders for donations to an endowment honoring the founders.”

One of Johnson’s first calls was to Bill Mul-

lins, son of another original board member, Howard Mullins. Like Johnson, the younger Mullins had followed in his father’s footsteps and supported the college as a board trustee.

The original board was composed of Howard Andres, Robert Caukin, LaVerne Johnson, Howard Mullins, Barbara Schaffer, Kenneth Smith and Fred Willrett. Elected to guide the newly created community college, the group represented a cross-section of the district and included several members from the agricultural community, forging a link between the farm fields where the college was built and the generations of students who would benefit from its academic offerings.

Present at the Founders Boardroom dedication were descendants of several of the original board members. Besides the newly named board room, the donated funds will be used in other ways to continue to benefit the college and students, perhaps including scholarships.

During the dedication ceremony, college President Laurie Borowicz introduced Johnson and Mullins, who addressed the history of the college and the role of the original trustees. After the Founders Boardroom dedication, Borowicz unveiled three brass etched plaques honoring board members who had served more than 20 years: John C. Roberts (1971-1997), Don Photo provided Huftalin (1975-2005) and Lois Purdy (1979-2001).

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Health insurance premiums for Illinois residents who buy coverage through the Affordable Care Act’s marketplace could increase by as much as 45 percent, according to proposals submitted by insurers and made public Monday.

The leading insurer on Illinois’ exchange, Blue Cross Blue Shield, is proposing increases for 2017 ranging from 23 percent to 45 percent for individual health care plans, according to proposals posted by Healthcare.gov. Another insurer, Coventry Health Care of Illinois, proposed rate increases as high as 21 percent.

Harken Health Insurance Company has proposed a nearly 29 percent hike in individual premiums and Health Alliance Medical Plans Inc. a more than 28 percent increase.

Naperville girl is youngest to hit 48 states’ highest peaks

NAPERVILLE – A 12-year-old Naperville resident is the youngest girl to climb to the highest point in each of the lower 48 states.

The Highpointers Club, a membership organization for hikers climbing the highest peaks in each state, confirmed Lucy Westlake’s record, the Daily Herald reported. The club said the previous record was set by a 17-year-old Kristen Kelliher of Vermont in 2011.

Club member and Highpointers Foundation Lead Director Dave Covill said achieving this goal at an early age is an amazing feat.

“That’s extremely impressive when you consider that the previous record-holder was 17 and the third place was 18,” he said.

Lucy’s first climb was on a more than 1,300-foot mountain in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula near her family’s cabin. She ran, climbed and explored on the 6-kilometer route.

Trampoline park injuries jump as the trend spreads

CHICAGO – Trampoline park injuries have soared as the indoor jumping trend has spread.

That’s according to a study that shows annual U.S. emergency room visits jumped 12-fold for park-related injuries from over five years. Injuries included broken legs, neck sprains and concussions, but 90 percent of the injured children and adults were treated and released.

The study by researchers at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford was published Monday in Pediatrics. They analyzed a national injury database.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against children using trampolines at home or parks and said injury rates at trampoline parks should be monitored.

CHICAGO – Chicago police said the 65 murders recorded in the city during July are the most seen during the month since 2006.

Chicago has recorded 381 homicides so far in 2016, compared with 264 murders through July 31, 2015.

Police said 2,394 people have been shot so far this year. In the same time period last year, 1,564 people had been shot.

There were 71 homicides in the city

in June and 66 in the previous month.

However, Chicago is still on pace to see more people killed this year than in last.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Monday that most of the violence is coming from two or three of the city’s 25 police districts.

He also said nearly 85 percent of the shooting victims had prior contact with law enforcement.

Carbondale officer shot, wounded during chase

CARBONDALE – Authorities said someone speeding away from a shooting scene in southern Illinois opened fire on pursuing officers, seriously wounding one before getting away.

The Carbondale Police Department said in a news release that the shooting occurred late Sunday after officers on patrol heard shots fired and drove toward the gunfire.

The officers tried to stop a tan, fourdoor vehicle as it sped from the scene, but the driver didn’t pull over.

Someone in the vehicle fired at the officers, hitting one. The officer was in serious condition Monday at a St. Louis hospital.

Authorities said the officers didn’t return fire and the vehicle got away.

The Illinois State Police are leading the investigation. Multiple law enforcement agencies are assisting.

Military families want apology from Trump

Their sons were killed in Iraq about a week apart.

So when Karen Meredith heard the grieving parents of a decorated Muslim Army officer being belittled by Donald Trump, she cried.

Meredith said she hadn’t wept over her son’s death for a long time, but the Republican presidential nominee “ripped the wounds right open again.”

“You don’t attack one Gold Star family, because if you do, you’re attacking a lot of us,” Meredith, 62, of Mountain View, California, said Monday.

Trump has been engaged in an emotionally charged feud with Khizr and Ghazala Khan, whose son, Capt. Humayun Khan, was killed in Iraq by a suicide bomber June 8, 2004. Trump stoked outrage by implying that Ghazala Khan did not speak while standing alongside her husband at last week’s Democratic convention because of their Muslim faith.

And he disputed their right to question his grasp of the Constitution.

Some of America’s Gold Star families, or those who lost loved ones in war, have demanded that Trump apologize.

Meredith organized a letter to Trump that has been signed by 23 families so far. She said she did so after seeing so much “hurt and anger” among Gold Star families on social media.

Trump refused to back down Monday, complaining anew that he has been “viciously attacked” by the Khans.

Meredith’s son and only child, Army 1st Lt. Kenneth Michael Ballard, was killed during a firefight in Iraq on May 30, 2004, at age 26.

“Most people in this country, before this, did not know what a Gold Star family was, let alone what our sacrifice was,” Meredith said. “For

The letter was released publicly Monday by VoteVets.org, a left-leaning group dedicated to electing liberal veterans to Congress. Meredith is a Democrat but said this is a nonpartisan issue.

Celeste Zappala, who also signed the letter, said the grief that Gold Star families suffer earns them the right to say whatever they want. Zappala’s son, Army Sgt. Sherwood R. Baker, was also killed in Iraq in 2004. She said she cried after hearing Trump’s comments, too.

“Mr. Trump has made a firestorm happen that didn’t need to happen and that insults everybody who served,” said Zappala, of Philadelphia.

“Nobody should say anything other than ‘Thank you for your service.’ ” Both Zappala and Meredith stressed that they aren’t speaking on behalf of all Gold Star families, and that there are others who back Trump.

Gold Star families represent such a small fraction of the population, “it’s super important that the people making the decision to send men and women off to war understand what that means,” said Borek, who hasn’t decided which candidate she will vote for.

Prominent Republicans spoke out Monday against Trump. Arizona Sen. John McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam, said that while the party has bestowed upon Trump the nomination, “it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us.”

The Veterans of Foreign Wars said it won’t tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising his or her right to free speech.

President Barack Obama addressed the Disabled American Veterans’ annual conference in Atlanta on Monday.

He didn’t mention Trump by name but implicitly rebuked him for criticizing the Khan family.

McDonald’s says it’s nixing some unpalatable ingredients

The Associated Press NEW YORK – McDonald’s, which is trying to shake its image for serving processed junk food, said Monday it is eliminating some unpalatable ingredients from its most popular menu items.

That includes making Chicken McNuggets and other items without artificial preservatives, and removing high-fructose corn syrup from its burger buns. McDonald’s did not immediately respond when asked about which specific preservatives are being removed.

The changes come as the world’s biggest burger chain fights to win back customers after three straight years of declining guest counts at its established U.S. locations. Major restaurant chains are scrambling to step up the image of their food as they face more

competition from smaller rivals promising wholesome alternatives.

“Why go to the position of trying to defend them, if the consumer is saying, ‘I prefer not to have that particular ingredient in my food’ ?” Mike Andres, president of McDonald’s U.S., said during an event at the company’s headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois, about its “food journey.”

How meaningful the changes are to customers remains to be seen.

Michael Jacobson, executive director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said the moves by McDonald’s don’t seem to address the big-picture problem with restaurant food – the overabundance of calories.

For instance, he said, swapping out high-fructose for sugar doesn’t make burger buns any healthier.

In the past year and a half, McDonald’s also has switched to butter from

margarine for its Egg McMuffins and added kale and spinach to its salads. Its rivals have made changes as well.

Dunkin’ Donuts, for instance, has promised to put more egg in its egg patty. Currently, the patty looks like a fried egg but is a composite of ingredients including egg whites, water, egg yolks and modified corn starch.

As part of its own push to remove artificial ingredients, Taco Bell has said it would switch to actual black pepper rather than “black pepper flavor.” That’s even as it continues trying to lure new diners with indulgent concoctions and neon-colored drinks.

Subway has introduced a “rotisserie chicken” and “carved turkey” that have more texture and look more natural than its regular chicken strips and turkey. It is offering both versions to avoid alienating fans who might not want any changes.

But convincing people it serves wholesome food is particularly important for McDonald’s, which long has courted families with its Happy Meals.

The company’s sales in its flagship U.S. market have showed improvement, helped by the fanfare over the introduction of an all-day breakfast menu in October. In the most recent quarter, however, McDonald’s said sales edged up just 1.8 percent at established locations. That signaled that any excitement from all-day Egg McMuffins already could be losing steam.

McDonald’s had signaled that tweaks to its menu were in store, telling investors during a presentation in late 2014 it was evaluating its cooking procedures and ingredients as part of its push to fix its struggling businesses.

“We need to think about our ingredient labels as being much smaller,” Andres said at the time.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Just days ahead of the Olympic Games the waterways of Rio de Janeiro are as filthy as ever, contaminated with raw human sewage teeming with dangerous viruses and bacteria, according to a 16-month-long study commissioned by The Associated Press.

Not only are some 1,400 athletes at risk of getting violently ill in water competitions, but the AP’s tests indicate that tourists also face potentially serious health risks on the golden beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana.

The AP’s survey of the aquatic Olympic and Paralympic venues has revealed consistent and dangerously high levels of viruses from the pollution, a major black eye on Rio’s Olympic project that set off alarm bells among sailors, rowers and open-water swimmers.

Since the AP released the initial results last July, athletes have been taking elaborate precautions to prevent illnesses that could potentially knock them out of the competition, including preventively taking antibiotics, bleaching oars and donning plastic suits and gloves in a bid to limit contact with the water.

But antibiotics combat bacterial infections, not viruses. And the AP investigation found that infectious adenovirus readings – tested with cell cultures and verified with molecular biology protocols – turned up at nearly 90 percent of the test sites over 16 months of testing.

“We would never, ever risk the health or the condition of any athlete for a competition,” said Mario Andrada, chief spokesman for the local organizing committee. “So the health of the athletes is our first priority. And the athletes don’t run a risk sailing in Guanabara Bay.” The committee previously said bacterial testing conducted by Rio state authorities has shown the aquatic venues to be within state guidelines.

The crux of the issue lies in the different types of testing used to determine the health and safety of recreational waters.

Bacterial tests measure levels of coliforms – different types of bacteria that tend not to cause illnesses themselves but are indicators of the presence of other, potentially harmful sewage-borne pathogens such as other bacteria, viruses and protozoa that can cause cholera, dysentery, hepatitis A and typhoid, among other diseases.

Bacterial tests are the worldwide standard because they’re cheap and easy.

But there’s a growing consensus that they’re not ideal for all climates, as bacteria break down quickly in tropical weather and salty marine waters.

In contrast, viruses have been shown to survive for weeks, months or even years – meaning that in tropical Rio, low bacterial markers can be completely out of step with high virus levels.

Operations at the airport include the DeKalb Flight Center, a full-service fixed-base operator providing fuel, de-icing, and aircraft handling and storage. Fly America offers flight training, aircraft maintenance and pilot services. Win Aviation provides aircraft sales, parts and maintenance at its new hangar. Additionally, the Kishwaukee Education Consortium hosts flight simulation training for students from five participating high schools.

The airport’s two runways handle about 30,000 flights a year, Airport Manager Tom Cleveland said.

Purposes include corporate business, cargo transportation and general aviation or recreation. At 7,025 feet in length, the main runway is longer than any at Midway Airport.

As a result, the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport is one of the major economic assets of DeKalb County. The ability for corporate officials to fly directly to DeKalb is a significant advantage for site selection and facility operation.

The store, at 9560 Route 23 in Waterman, will have the grand opening at 8 a.m., and it will include free prizes and special deals, according to a news release from the Goodlettsville, Tennessee-based retailer.

The first 50 adult shoppers at the store will get a $10 Dollar General gift card, and the first 200 shoppers will receive a Dollar General tote bag, among other giveaways, the release said.

Dollar General had more than 12,400 stores in 43 states as of January. It builds 7,300-square-foot stores that stock between 10,000 and 12,000 items, according to its website.

The Waterman location will operate between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. every day. The publicly traded company, which had $20.4 billion in sales in fiscal 2015, has more than 114,000 employee; locally, Dollar General still is seeking new hires.

A snappier way to use food stamps

On July 1, the Agriculture Department was supposed to announce the results of a pilot program that could help the poorest Americans eat healthier, The Washington Post’s Rachel Premack reported. The only problem? The program had not even begun. Instead, the long-overdue initiative to accept food stamps in some online grocery services will launch in the fall.

If all goes well, the department should implement it nationwide.

Online grocery delivery services are becoming more popular among Americans who want to skip the hassle of trekking to a brick-and-mortar supermarket.

But they’re not an option for the 1 in 7 Americans paying for food through the department’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Those are the people who need online grocery delivery services most.

Low-income shoppers struggle to find affordable, high-quality food: About 11.5 million poor Americans – many without a car – live at least one mile from the nearest supermarket in “food deserts” home to some of the highest levels of obesity in the country. That can prevent some shoppers from getting out of the house to grocery stores. The closest stores often stock their shelves with a limited – and often unhealthy – slate of items. Low-income people already are at an above-average risk for chronic health problems. The challenge to eat well and affordably at the same time does not help.

Online shopping would give food stamp recipients access to a better selection of better food at better prices. But companies cannot make the option widely available until SNAP beneficiaries can use their electronic benefits cards online. That technology, the USDA said, is the reason the pilot program has been delayed: Until recently, no card provider could allow users to enter their PINs online without risks to security.

Now, one provider has found a solution, opening the door for the pilot program. There is more to figure out along the way: Many low-income Americans do not have at-home internet access, which could prevent them from accessing delivery websites from computers. Poorer shoppers also search for different products based on how long food will keep in the fridge or what can feed all members of their family.

As companies apply to participate in the USDA’s program – and they should – they might consider developing smartphone-based ordering platforms that provide advice to customers on how to get foods that are both nutritious and economical. They also should minimize delivery fees to the poor. This experiment is overdue. When it does get done, it should be done right.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A tale of two parties

To the Editor: In Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities,” a novel depicting the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy, we can see many parallels to the recent political nominating conventions in Cleveland and Philadelphia substituting for London and Paris.

For instance, Dickens’ story took place just before and during the early years of the French Revolution. This election season, we too often have heard the pundits and candidates themselves describe this election as “a political revolution.” If I were a modern-day aristocrat, I’d be keeping my eye on the oft-ignored guillotine stocks.

It’s clear that voters in this country feel demoralized and angry. It has been a constant theme throughout both campaigns. The rise of anti-establishment populist candidates on both sides, the calls for imprisonment, and even one Donald Trump adviser calling for a firing squad eerily allude to the brutality of the revolutionaries depicted in Dickens’ novel.

Nothing was chanted more loudly and advocated for more often by various speakers at the Republican convention than “Lock her up!” One prominent GOP speaker even held a mock trial from the podium,

mirroring trials hovered over by bloodthirsty crowds.

Dickens’ novel begins by contrasting prevailing attitudes of the day, writing, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, and it was the age of foolishness,” and it goes on to say it was “it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness.”

What perfect characterizations of Hillary Clinton’s optimistic message of hope and Trump’s dark vision of our future.

Whether Philadelphia is an apt city to compare 18th-century London to is up for debate. However, if the extreme rhetoric, vitriol and vision put forth during the Cleveland convention ever come to pass through the successful candidacy of Trump, our tale of two parties will end much like Dickens’ novel, with mobs intoxicated by the illusion of power that violence often elicits, extremes of barbarism, and indiscriminate “justice” reaping untold tragic consequences.

In 1993, a newly elected President Bill Clinton said in his inaugural address under a bright midday sky, “There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured with what is right in America.”

Let’s not turn this November into Dickens’ winter of despair by electing a demagogue.

Sheriff: Officers fortunate to have local support

To the Editor: Throughout my career, I rarely have written – but often have read – letters to the editor.

However, I feel compelled to write this because, over the last weeks, since the tragic deaths of police officers and deputy sheriffs in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the words of encouragement and support that I personally, my deputies and, I’m sure,

thought it would be 52 percent or higher – more than Barack Obama’s 51 percent in 2012. Acting national chairman Donna Brazile guessed that Clinton would win 303 electoral votes, which she would if she carried every Obama 2012 state except Florida.

It may be natural for Republicans to consider more permutations and combinations than Democrats. Republicans have just been through a primary cycle in which conventional wisdom has been disrupted over and over.

The Democrats’ result was the one they expected all along.

As is the result they seem to expect in November.

They’ve internalized the analyses that claim that demographic change – increasing percentages of nonwhites, millennials, single women in the electorate – have propelled them to something like permanent majority status.

They understand that Donald Trump is running stronger than previous Republican nominees among non-college-educated white men, and their speakers made ritual obeisance to the meme that Democrats are better for the little guy.

But the more prevalent appeal, delivered especially by Michael Bloomberg, is to whites with higher education who already are repelled

by Trump.

This amounts to augmenting their initial strategy of reassembling the 2012 Obama 51 percent majority with what FiveThirtyEight proprietor Nate Silver calls a “1964 strategy,” arguing that the Republican nominee is unacceptable.

The numbers look as if they might add up – or not. But there are some imponderables. One is that the incumbent party is at a disadvantage when two-thirds of voters believe things are moving in the wrong direction.

The Clinton Convention was forced to claim that things are better than you think and even to take on the trappings of optimistic nationalism and, at some risk of boos from Bernie bros, add flags and generals in its third and fourth days. That risks being at odds with the middle of the electorate and its own left wing at the same time.

The second is that the candidate promises economic growth with policies that have over the past seven years produced only sluggish growth – more sluggish than economists thought, it turns out, from GDP statistics released July 29.

Law enforcement officers in DeKalb County have been fortunate in the past and even more so now to have so many citizens and organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus, who take the time to sincerely say, “Thank you,” both by words and actions.

Policing in this country is a difficult balance between freedom and security, and when police fall short, they are

favored splinter groups. There’s also a claim that higher taxes will stimulate growth and a promise of more infrastructure spending.

But as Barack Obama grinningly observed, there are no shovel-ready projects. And if you want someone who will sweep aside environmental barriers and regulatory delays, you might well prefer Donald Trump.

The third imponderable is something pollsters can’t reliably gauge: turnout. Even with Barack Obama’s endorsement, Clinton is unlikely to equal the black turnout and Democratic percentages of 2008 and 2012.

Hispanics have shown less enthusiasm for repudiating Trump than Democrats expected.

Young voters, who dislike Trump but voted heavily for Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primaries, may be hard to rally.

Polling shows many under-35s who choose Clinton in a two-way race prefer Libertarian Johnson or the Green Party’s Stein when given the option. That could swell the minor party vote above the 1.0 to 1.8 percent they received in the past three elections.

So which party has a winning strategy? Not clear.

What is the campaign strategy for the two political parties? Clues can be had from the responses to a question I asked about a dozen dignitaries of each party at their conventions in Cleveland and Philadelphia.

What’s your best guess, I asked – emphasizing guess – of your nominee’s percentage of the popular vote in November 2016?

I understood the responses, being on the record, were not entirely frank.

Only two Republicans guessed Donald Trump would lose; only one Democrat said he was uncertain about the result. It would be churlish to hurl the responses of those who turned out to be less than prescient back at them in scorn.

One thing the responses had in common is that they reflected pre-convention polling, which showed Clinton 3 to 5 points ahead.

Democrats did not seem to be taking into account post-Republican Convention polling that showed the race essentially even.

But, otherwise, they differed.

Only two Republicans guessed that Trump would get more than 50 percent of the vote. Several made a point of saying that minor party candidates – Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Jill Stein – would get a significant number of votes.

Most Democrats did not take this prospect very seriously. Only two guessed that Clinton’s percentage would be under 49 percent. Most

Frazier has experience playing home games away from campus

CHICAGO – Looking for a way to combat low attendance at football games late in the season, Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier knew he could get some heat for taking a game out of Huskie Stadium and moving it to U.S. Cellular Field in what is being dubbed the “Chi-town Showdown.”

Although the Huskies will need to take a bus to their Nov. 9 home game against Toledo in the first game at the home of the White Sox, that’s something Frazier has plenty of Cell coverage experience with as a player.

During his playToledo vs. NIU, 7 p.m. (Wednes- ing days at the University of Alabama day) Nov. 9 at U.S. Cellular from 1987-91, Frazier saw the CrimField, son Tide play more ESPN2/ESPNU than half their home games away from the campus site in Tuscaloosa – instead, playing 15 of their 26 scheduled home games more than 50 miles away at Legion Field in Birmingham.

“They adopted Birmingham as home games, they would split the home games in two,” Frazier said at NIU’s Chicago media day Monday afternoon. “I see this as something similar. We need to have some presence in Chicagoland, and, obviously, in DeKalb.

“It was different. We get into the bus and go out, it was different. But I also understood that it was 51 miles away and we needed to do that. We had to go to Legion Field, that’s what we did. It’s the same type of mentality. We have to appeal to Chicagoland.

We are Chicagoland. ... If we don’t appeal to them, we get ourselves in trouble.”

Alabama, which stopped playing games at Legion Field in 2003, had strong showings in those home-awayfrom-home contests in Birmingham, going 13-2 in the seasons Frazier was with the team. When construction began on an expansion of the Crimson Tide’s Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa during the 1987 season, they played all five home games at Legion Field.

“I have lots of reasons we moved this game here and I want to respect our season-ticket base, but they have to understand that we need to think on a regional, national level,” Frazier said. “We are no longer the school off in the corner that we can just dismiss the presence of Chicagoland. We must cater to that exposure.”

One person who is happy about the game being played in Chicago is

senior defensive end Ladell Fleming, who grew up on the South Side of the city and went to Chicago Julian.

The decision to play at U.S. Cellular Field was good news for his family, he said.

“They’re mostly excited because they don’t have to travel,” he said. “Of course my family wants to go to every game, but when you have a game in the heart of Chicago close to all of my family – I mean, I’m born and raised in Chicago. They’re all going to be there and they’re excited about it, and I’m

excited about it.”

Frazier was adamant that he stands by the decision to pull the game from DeKalb, citing poor attendance the Huskies have had during the weeknight games later in the season. However, he is quick to point out that he isn’t the one to come up with the idea of playing a game in Chicago, because NIU had a history of playing at Soldier Field before he came to the school in 2013.

Frazier, who was working for Wisconsin when the Badgers played the Huskies at Soldier Field in 2011, said there still is plenty of marketing preparation to do before the game, but remains optimistic it will be a success.

“I hope it turns out tremendously,” Frazier said. “Our alumni deserve it, our program deserves it. I’m fully aware that this is a pro town. I’m passionate about that. Miller, Royal in the concussion protocol

Tight end Zach Miller did not practice Monday, as he is in the concussion protocol, having experienced delayed symptoms Sunday.

“I think he felt a little funny last night, didn’t feel as good this morning,” coach John Fox said. “So we just shut it down and he’ll go through the protocol.”

Receiver Eddie Royal left practice early and also is in the concussion protocol. The other players who did not finish practice because of injuries included receivers Derek Keaton (leg) and Josh Bellamy (ankle), tight end Ben Braunecker (ankle) and defensive

lineman Marquis Jackson (hamstring strain). Braunecker was seen in a walking boot later in practice.

Tight end Khari Lee (shoulder), defensive lineman Terry Williams (shoulder), cornerback Kyle Fuller (ankle sprain) and linebacker Leonard Floyd (shoulder) were limited.

Floyd, the team’s top pick, has been at full-go for only one practice Zach Miller during training camp, but Fox was pleased with what he saw in the spring to be confident about what the outside linebacker eventually can bring.

“I think it was kind of an untimely illness was part of that coming into camp. It happens; guys get sick,” he said. “... He did a lot of good stuff in the offseason, and he’ll continue to im-

A few dust-ups: For the fifth practice in a row, tempers flared three times at Monday’s session. Late in practice, tight end Gannon Sinclair shoved Harold Jones-Quartey after the safety was physical with Sinclair near the sideline. Each of the battles ended quickly.

“It’s part of football,” Fox said. “I mean, it’s a waste of energy sometimes.

It’s a long practice, it’s grueling by design, but they are aggressive people.”

Hoyer to Carey: The top offensive play of the day came when quarterback Brian Hoyer dropped a pretty pass in the

bucket to running back Ka’Deem Carey down the sideline on a wheel route.

“Been practicing on that over-theshoulder catch all day and all year,” Carey said.

The third-year back has only eight career receptions, so it certainly is good to get him more opportunities as a receiver to help his competition for reps against Jacquizz Rodgers and Jordan Howard, as Jeremy Langford is probably the most polished pass catcher of the group.

Quick hits: Defensive lineman Akiem Hicks drew the most cheers for the defense when he stopped Langford at the line of scrimmage. … Receiver Daniel Braverman continued his strong camp with a diving catch. … The Bears return to Bourbonnais on Wednesday for three consecutive practices before Saturday’s practice at Soldier Field for Family Fest.

CHICAGO – For a brief, two-pitch window in the seventh inning Monday night, it was about history.

The Marlins’ Ichiro Suzuki, an MVP on two continents, stepping to the plate as a pinch-hitter two hits shy of 3,000 in his major league career. Then he lined Kyle Hendricks’ second pitch to third baseman Kris Bryant, who threw to first for an inning-ending double play.

And then it was back to the Kyle Hendricks Show.

The right-hander most call the Cubs’ fifth starter pitched like their ace again to beat the Marlins, 5-0, with his second career shutout as the Cubs won for the fifth time in six games.

Hendricks (10-7) allowed only three runs in July – all in his last start – and opened August with his sixth scoreless performance in eight outings, including a two-inning relief appearance just before the All-Star break.

Fast-forward to the two biggest everyday reasons the Cubs are in position to take a shot at history this fall, and it looks as if Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant could make a run at the Kent-Bonds feat.

“I remember that. They fought in

the dugout, right?” said Bryant, who was 8 when Kent and Bonds went 1-2 in MVP voting – two seasons before their caught-on-camera moment in the dugout in San Diego.

Although many seem to remember Bonds as the villain in that moment, it was Kent who was upset, screaming and cursing at teammate David Bell over a play that wasn’t made moments earlier on the field – with dozens of fans at the dugout listening to it all.

“All I told Jeff was, ‘Hey, dude, chill,’ because the people were right there,” Bonds said. “Jeff was already heated at that moment and refused to calm down, and he ‘MF’d’ the wrong person.”

If there’s a lesson in the story – other than don’t cuss out Barry Bonds in a confined space – it might be that MVP-caliber competition among teammates doesn’t require the feel-good, social-media-partner bromance that the Cubs’ MVP candidates share.

“When you start talking about stuff like that, it’s almost like a joint effort between us to get to that point,” said Bryant, who finished July with a .931 OPS and was one off the league home run lead. He also has played all three outfield spots and first base in addition to third, underscoring his value in his second season.

“And he’s only going to get better,” said Rizzo, who has a .955 OPS and is one off the league RBI lead. “That’s the best part.”

Oh, geez.

“We’ll feign a fight in the dugout,” Maddon joked.

A little friction is not always a bad thing among teammate stars.

Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, who finished 1-2 in the MVP voting for the Yankees’ pennant winners in 1960 and ’61 weren’t exactly drinking buddies. And Kent and Bonds didn’t need to be Myspace pals to lead the Giants to the 2002 World Series.

“He had his way about him that was just a little bit different, and I had a way about myself that was different,” Bonds said. “But when it came to both of us on that baseball field, there was one thing: We were never out of sync on that.

“I don’t need to like Jeff Kent to say that he’s a great baseball player. But I don’t dislike him either. We had our differences, but I never disliked him.”

So what are the chances of that fight, Kris Bryant?

“Not at all,” Bryant said. “We’re the best of friends.”

Rizzo? You finished fourth last year; you don’t want the kid encroaching on your MVP race.

“If I’m in it, of course,” Rizzo said.

“I’ll welcome anyone.”

Maybe it’s up to Maddon, like Baker 16 years ago, to spice up this MVP race.

“Bryzzo,” he said. “Absolutely. It’ll be the first time ever it’s going to end in a tie.”

Smith, who has closer experience, acquired from Angels

CHICAGO – A week after landing their big acquisition of the summer trade season, the Cubs added another relief pitcher with closing experience, acquiring right-hander Joe Smith from the Angels for a Single-A pitcher.

Smith, 32, has a 3.82 ERA with six saves in 38 relief appearances this season. He earned 15 saves with the Angels in 2014, before the Angels acquired Houston Street in late July to take over the closer role.

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer called the side-arming Smith a “right-handed specialist,” capable of producing a lot of ground balls.

“We don’t have that look in our bullpen,” said Hoyer, who expects Smith to join the club Tuesday. “It’s nice to add that different look.”

The Cubs sent right-hander Jesus Castillo, 20, to the Angels. Castillo was 2-3 with a 3.27 ERA in seven starts for

short-season Eugene.

The move comes a week after the Cubs acquired All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees in a fourfor-one trade and less than two weeks after adding left-hander Mike Montgomery in a trade with Seattle.

Hoyer, who said the Cubs pursued controllable starting pitching and a left-handed bat, said one of the speed bumps in the market was the fact that two of the sellers (Cincinnati and Milwaukee) were teams in Joe Smith their division and another was the White Sox. “It’s really hard to do deals with those teams,” he said.

Another speed bump: The weak freeagent pitching market anticipated after the season drove up prices as teams held on to a lot of the more valuable pitchers, looking ahead at a potentially more robust pool of buyers in the offseason.

“I think you saw the first impact of the weak free-agent market in the winter,” Hoyer said.

Among the players the Cubs pursued who went to other teams during the trading period were starters Drew Pomeranz (San Diego to Boston two weeks ago) and Matt Moore (from Tampa Bay to San Francisco on Monday), outfielder Josh Reddick (from Oakland to the Dodgers on Monday) and reliever Andrew Miller (Yankees to Cleveland on Sunday).

Hoyer said the Cubs will continue to seek roster tweaks during the August waiver period before playoff-eligible rosters lock in at the end of the month.

“Things definitely don’t stop,” Hoyer said.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Smith, left-hander Brian Matusz was designated for assignment.

The Cubs recalled pitcher Spencer Patton before Monday’s game to join a bullpen forced to cover nine innings during Sunday’s 12-inning victory over Seattle.

CHICAGO – In the final weeks of the 2000 season, with the Giants closing in on a division title, manager Dusty Baker was asked by reporters about his two MVP candidates, Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent.

Who would get his vote? In one of the more unusual moments in major league managerial history, Baker picked one: Kent.

That was said to ruffle the team’s superstar, although 16 years later Bonds said he doesn’t Chris Bryant remember and was more concerned about winning, anyway.

Kent received 22 first-place votes and won the National League MVP that year; Bonds received six Anthony Rizzo first-place votes and finished second – then won the next four MVPs. “He may have (said that); he may not have,” said Bonds, who’s in town this week as the hitting coach for the Miami Marlins. “That’s Dusty’s opinion. But I don’t even remember that. …

But all eyes will remain on Sale, even after the nonwaiver deadline for trades passed at 3 p.m. Monday with the White Sox holding firm to their position of “blow us away or go away” when it came to the All-Star Game starting pitcher and top American League Cy Young candidate.

Although the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers were known to be in discussions with general manager Rick Hahn, the Sox were not offered the package of four or five players it would have taken to land their ace, or their other prized lefty, Jose Quintana.

They could use a burst of young talent, major league-ready players and prospects combined, those pitchers would fetch into the a thin system.

But no one came close enough with anything Hahn would even bounce off chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. We know the Sox asked for a lot.

“The Sox will not budge off their huge asking price,” an AL Central source said, not expecting a trade Monday morning. “Could [a trade] happen?

Sure. Is it likely? No.” One has to wonder now how Sale, 27, who has been to five All-Star Games but no playoff games, feels about all this. He said winning means everything, and his uniform cut-up caper last week demonstrated his growing frustration. It came a couple of days after Hahn, admitting that his team was “mired in mediocrity,” wasn’t ruling out trading anyone.

How much patience does Sale have?

By not trading Sale, Sox avoid inevitable bad deal The White Sox have a terminal case of dull. If you hold to that idea, as I do, then it didn’t really matter what they did or didn’t do at the trade deadline.

For the record, they didn’t do doo-doo.

Those of you who wanted the Sox to trade ace Chris Sale for young players and prospects are profoundly disappointed, judging by social media. Those of us who wanted them to keep their star pitcher can go back to sleep until his next start.

From the vantage point of today, the 2005 World Series title looks like a combination of flukiness and favorable planet alignment. It’s not only that the Sox have been to the playoffs only once since the championship season, though that’s bad enough. It’s that everywhere you turn with this franchise, you run into a wall of mind-numbing ordinariness. It’s like being sentenced to watch the local high school perform ‘‘Grease” year after year.

That’s why I didn’t want the Sox to trade Sale. Every five days, I get to watch a great pitcher. He is dull-proof.

Every analytical bone in my body understands that this is no way to build a winner, that by saying no to a

VIEWS Rick Morrissey deal involving prospects and players, the Sox are doomed to a future in the middle of the standings or below. In the middle of nowhere.

But I don’t trust the Sox to make the right moves. Or, given their history, even if they traded for what seemed like the right players, those players would hit the ground running, only to sink in quicksand. That’s what happens to everybody and everything that rubs up against the Sox. So I’ll selfishly take Sale and Jose Quintana for entertainment purposes.

Hey, maybe chairman Jerry Reinsdorf is waiting until the offseason to trade Sale – after he fires vice president Ken Williams and general manager Rick Hahn. I know: That’ll be the day.

Ever seen a pig fly? I haven’t, either.

But none of the offers, for Sale, Quintana, closer David Robertson or James Shields to name a few, was worth a move.

“We had a number of conversations with just about every team in baseball at one point or another over the last week plus,’’ Hahn said Monday. “But, ultimately, no other deals presented themselves that made sense for the White Sox from a long-term competitiveness standpoint.”

Hahn said having a limited number of players, Justin Morneau and catchers Alex Avila and Dioner Navarro included, as active players not under under contract control at the end of the year limited his urgency to trade now.

And the Sox certainly were not pressing to trade Sale now – his recent dustups with management notwithstanding – knowing the market could improve during an offseason when the free-agent market for pitching will be thin. Although they didn’t make a deal before the deadline, the Sox “established their market for him,” the source said. “So they set the bar for a winter deal. Teams that want an elite pitcher know what this one will cost.

“Waiting until the winter allows for more teams to plan, regroup, enter the sweepstakes.”

Yes it does. Maybe then, the Red Sox, Dodgers, Rangers, etc. will sweeten the pot.

“We expect a different (market) dynamic at that point,” Hahn said. “And given there was nothing at this point that led to us wanting to move, we felt better about continuing to keep our valuable, premium talent that is controllable and could help us conceivably win over the next several years.”

swing tackle at the moment appears to be Nick Becton. No offense to the Becton family, but ...

So the long and short of it is this: If Massie, Grasu, Whitehair and Leno are at the front end of solid NFL careers, the offense should be at least somewhat improved.

But if any one or two of them prove to be less than the real deal, the Bears have a real problem.

LONG POND, Pa. – Chris Buescher sat in his Ford, hoping the fog would stick over Pocono and the cloud over the rookie’s middling season would start to lift.

Buescher idled in his car, then stood with his arms folded on pit road.

“I tried not to get my hopes up,” he said.

Buescher emerged from the fog to become a surprising winner in Monday’s shortened Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway. He now is on the verge of being in the mix for NASCAR’s championship after not finishing better than 14th all season before Monday.

Imagine a title push that kicks off with Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson and little-known Buescher in the field.

Buescher is on the brink of becoming the first Chase bracket buster. Led by four-time winners Busch and Keselowski, there are 11 slots seemingly set for race winners, and Buescher would make 12. Jamie McMurray, Chase Elliott, Austin Dillon, Ryan Newman and Kyle Larson are among the four winless drivers battling for the final four spots.

“This is going to change our whole year right here,” Buescher said.

Drivers with a Chase spot secured enjoyed Buescher’s feel-good victory that broke up the recent Toyota hot streak.

“I told him, ‘If I couldn’t win, it was cool to see him win,’ ” Keselowski said.

NASCAR defended dragging out the decision to call the race, even as severe storms hit a track where a fan was killed by a lightning strike in 2012.

“We never lost the track,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR’s chief racing development officer. “I think most NASCAR fans want to see a complete race.”

He’s not there yet. Buescher is six points behind David Ragan for 30th to reach the cutoff needed to become eligible for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Buescher, who drives for underfunded Front Row Motorsports, was the beneficiary on a rare Monday race postponed a day by rain. With nasty weather punishing the track, NASCAR called the red flag with 22 laps left and parked the cars on pit road. Buescher was as much a spectator in the No. 34 Ford as the few fans left in the stands, although NASCAR let drivers get out of their cars after about 10 minutes as they waited out gloomy conditions.

“I’m a little scared to get out,” Buescher said.

No need. He was declared the winner after about an 80-minute delay. He was doused with beer and water in a makeshift victory lane celebration inside a garage stall, his Ford covered on rainy pit road instead of bathed in confetti.

ADHD medication shown to be safe lived problems with sleep and appetite. These issues may improve as a child adjusts to the medication. And knowing these issues might be a problem can help parents anticipate possible solutions. For example, if appetite becomes a problem, you can give your child a big breakfast before taking the medication.

Or work with your child’s doctor to lower his or her dose if sleep is an issue.

In addition, parents should be aware medication isn’t the only treatment option.

For example, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) also can help children with ADHD. Relaxation training and social skills training are other treatment options.

Because I’m not a pediatrician, I haven’t seen kids with ADHD in my practice. But I sure have seen their parents. And one common misconception parents have about ADHD – and about other “psychological” problems – is they represent a character disorder. They think the kids have a weakness, one they should be able to overcome with willpower and discipline.

In my opinion, that’s the wrong way to think about it. I believe ADHD is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. While CBT, relaxation training and social skills training help kids function, they probably don’t change brain chemistry.

The bottom line? Find a doctor who understands and commonly treats ADHD. When medication is prescribed correctly by a knowledgeable physician, the positives outweigh the negatives.

Dear Dr. K: My daughter has ADHD. I have heard conflicting reports about ADHD medication for kids. Is it safe and does it work?

Dear Reader: ADHD stands for “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.” Children with ADHD have trouble paying attention and are impulsive and hyperactive. These symptoms can get in their way and make it harder for them to function at school and at home. ADHD also interferes with a child’s ability to form and keep friendships.

Methylphenidate is the most commonly prescribed drug for ADHD. It’s known by many brand names, including Ritalin, Concerta and Quillivant. It has been used for more than 50 years to treat ADHD, and studies have found it to be effective in decreasing symptoms.

Despite its long history, the first comprehensive, systematic review of the benefits and risks of this drug was not published until 2015.

The researchers reviewed hundreds of studies that examined the effects of methylphenidate for ADHD. They found the drug did improve children’s performance in the classroom. And parents reported a better quality of life for the family when their children were taking medication. On the other hand, there was some evidence it increased the risk of sleep problems and decreased appetite.

So what does this mean for parents trying to decide whether their child should take ADHD medication?

First, parents can take comfort in the fact these medications often work. They reduce problems with attention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. This often improves a family’s quality of life at home and leads to better overall behavior at school.

Parents also can rest assured methylphenidate is unlikely to cause serious, long-term problems. About one in four children who take the drug may have minor and short-
