Flag-burning continues to happen, despite being unconstitutional

By DAVID MERCER The Associated Press URBANA – Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz had just finished walking in a July 4th parade when her assistant told her a central Illinois man had been arrested on suspicion of burning an American flag.

Rietz said she knew “immediately” that the Urbana Police Department needed to release Bryton Mellott, who posted a video of the act on Facebook and whom police initially said they arrested to protect from threats. The state law used to jail him, although clear in its prohibition of desecrating either the U.S. or state flags, is unconstitutional.

An Associated Press analysis shows at least 40 states still have flag-desecration laws, punishing those who burn or otherwise damage U.S. and – in most cases – state flags with fines or even jail time. A handful of Southern states extend that protection to Confederate flags. Yet, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in separate cases in 1989 and 1990 that flag burning and other forms of damage are constitutionally protected free speech.

Most people who burn flags in protest, such as those outside of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this month, are not arrested.

But at least eight people have been arrested since 2007 for acts such as burning a flag while walking in traffic and hanging a torn flag from a tree. And there appears to be little political motivation to change or do away with the flag desecration laws, an act for which some voters might punish them.

Arkansas, Connecticut, Missouri, New Hampshire and Rhode Island are the only states to have

taken any kind of action to get rid of their flag desecration laws; Alaska, Wyoming and Wisconsin have no such laws.

Maryland State Delegate Eric Bromwell recently sponsored and pushed through legislation amending state law to allow flag-themed commercial products and events, something that his fellow lawmakers were nervous about because they thought it might affect its prohibition on flag desecration.

Flags regularly are burned around the country as parts of protests, such as in Cleveland.

Although there were some arrests, no one was charged under Ohio’s flag desecration law.

This July 4th, there were two arrests for alleged flag desecration half a country apart.

An 18-year-old New Orleans woman was jailed overnight for a number of alleged offenses, among them taking a Confederate flag from a home; Louisiana’s flag desecration law includes Confederate flags. Court records indicate she has not yet been charged, a decision that won’t be made until her scheduled court appearance Aug. 18.

Meanwhile, Mellott was taken into custody after posting a video to Facebook of him burning an American flag. He wrote that he was ashamed of his country because of its treatment of the poor, minorities and homosexuals. Some of the responses to his post included threats, and Urbana police initially said they took Mellott into custody to protect him.

Neither Mellott nor Urbana police responded to requests for comment from The Associated Press, but Rietz believes police arrested him with “the best of intentions.”

More than 1,000 vehicles turn out for Sycamore car show

By AIMEE BARROWS Shaw Media correspondent Thousands of car and motorcycle fanatics from all over the Midwest descended upon downtown Sycamore on a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon to take a step back in time at the 17th Annual Fizz Ehrler Memorial Turning Back Time Car Show.

Everything from street rods, muscle cars, race cars and vintage cars to radical custom cars and motorcycles were on display for visitors to admire. Participants voted for their favorite cars and motorcycles, and hundreds of awards and trophies were given away in several categories.

Brian Taylor of Sycamore was showing his 1959 Ford. He says he displays it at a few shows a year but the Sycamore show is always one of his favorites.

“There are a lot of people and cars here. I like talking to people and showing it off,” he said. “I’m very proud of it.

A lot of work went into getting it to this finished state.”

Bryan Quick of Elburn wanted an inexpensive American car he could fix up, so he bought his 1968 Chevy Impala about 10 years ago. He arrived in Sycamore at 6:30 Sunday morning and was having a great time mingling with other car fans.

“This is my first car show. It’s now nice enough to where it’s fixed up so people can appreciate it,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of people tell me stories about how they can relate to that car. You don’t see too many four-doors at car shows.”

Sam Caputo, 10, said he had a great time at the show because all the cars were “cool.”

“I got to see a lot of cars, but my favorite was a red and black Corvette.

It looked futuristic,” said Sam, a fifthgrader at North Grove Elementary School in Sycamore.

This was the first time Leanne Brand of Malta had been to this show.

“I love [the show]. It’s awesome. You can see every car under the sun, and that makes it fun,” she said.

Lou Faivre of Malta brought his 1964 Plymouth convertible. He said he is the third owner of the car, and it was sold new in Sycamore.

“I graduated from high school in ’64.

My first new car was a 1964 Plymouth convertible,” he said. “I did some refurbishing on the interior, but it’s all orig-

inal. This is a wonderful show; you see so many cars that you don’t see at other shows. This draws cars from so far away.

It’s built up a good reputation. People know they’ll see some quality cars here.”

This year’s show was probably the biggest one yet, with more than a thousand cars, said Mike Tritle, director of the car show. The event is sponsored by the Turning Back Time Car Club based in Sycamore. The club donates all proceeds from the show to local nonprofit organizations. In the past, the club has donated to the Sycamore School District, the Salvation Army and Kishwaukee Cancer Center. The show was the brainchild of the late Chuck Criswell, who recently died of cancer. It has grown significantly since the inaugural show in 1999, and is now the biggest event in Sycamore – after Pumpkin Fest.

“We had just shy of 1,100 in 2013, but I’m guessing we have more than that today,” Tritle said. “The weather this year is really good, and everyone’s just having fun.”

Cary Singer of Sycamore, a member of the Turning Back Time Car Club, said one reason this show is so popular is because it’s a family-friendly event.

“The car community has seen what happens here. There’s something here for everyone, and it brings people to Sycamore so we can show it off,” he said.

Ellen Engstrom of Elburn said this show is the biggest one of the year for her family, who brought a 1958 red Chevrolet Impala.

“All the people we meet are so friendly,” she said. “Everyone loves talking about their cars, and I love to see the younger kids here with parents and grandparents.”

Festival staple makes its comeback after year hiatus Voice your opinion

By KEITH HERNANDEZ Shaw Media correspondent BaconPalooza returned to DeKalb from a one-year hiatus this weekend.

Bacon-wrapped pineapple and cherry-bacon flavored shaved ice were a couple of the hot items during the annual bacon celebration that marked the end of Kishwaukee Fest on Saturday in Van Buer Plaza. All food vendors in the festival were required to have one bacon item on their menus, and all festival-goers were required to come with an open mind.

“It’s a bacon phenomenon,” said event creator and organizer Micheal Embrey about the popularity of the food item. “You wake up in the morning smelling bacon cooking; there’s an aroma about it.”

Fest to bring something unique to DeKalb County, which is a large producer of pork. “Chicago has pizza and hot dogs, but what does DeKalb taste like?” Embrey said.

Kishwaukee Fest was canceled last year because Embrey was not available to oversee it, but the annual week-long celebration will continue. Bacon will still be a mainstay of the festival next year, as Embrey said he does not foresee the craze going away.

“It idealizes food,” said Troop 33 Scoutmaster Cliff Golden, whose organization took part in the festival. “You put bacon on anything, it makes it so much better.”

DeKalb Library hosts Harry Potter Party

By AIMEE BARROWS Shaw Media correspondent Amanda Elliott loves Harry Potter and couldn’t wait for the new play, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” to be released Sunday, so she and many other excited fans celebrated the new release at the DeKalb Public Library’s Harry Potter Party on Saturday.

“I’ve always loved fantasy and spells and magic,” said the 10-yearold student at St. Mary’s of Sycamore, who was dressed as Harry Potter. “I love the adventures in the books and I’ve read all of them.

I’m having so much fun today.”

The second annual Harry Potter Party featured games and activities that are related to the popular series

by British author J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter fanatics were sorted into houses, got free magic wands, met the popular character Hermione, met NIU’s Quidditch Team, took a magic potions class and searched the Forbidden Forest to hunt for Horcruxes.

Darcy Tatlock, DeKalb Public Library’s tween coordinator, said the day was about the “magic of Harry Potter,” and to get kids excited for the release of the new book, which takes place years in the future and the story focuses on Harry’s child. Tatlock said the children’s department will have four copies of the new book, and thought the adult department would have a few more. She said the release date, July 31, is Harry’s birthday.

“Harry is a relatable character; he’s an underdog who’s thrown into crazy situations and makes the best of it,” she said. “This party is just to share our geekiness about a literary character.

We’re a library and we’re concerned with literacy and community, and this is a great way to combine the two.”

Stacy McCall came from Campton Hills with her sons, ages 5 and 8, to celebrate Harry Potter. She said they came to last year ’s party and they had a blast, so they wanted to come back.

“We’re big Harry Potter fans,” she said. “They like the wands and dressing up. They had fun meeting the Quidditch Team.”

Rachael Feldacker, 8, of DeKalb was having fun at the potions table. She said she enjoyed making ogre snot and chromatic potions.

“I like magic because it’s really awesome. I loved meeting Hermione too,” said the third-grader at Little John Elementary School.

Sam Hunt of NIU STEM Outreach was assisting with the potions class and said he enjoyed seeing the excited looks on the kids’ faces as they were creating their potions.

reach with literature in a fun and engaging way. If kids are engaged with one, then maybe that passion can spread to other subjects,” he said.

Kellsa Jontz of DeKalb brought her 9-year-old daughter, Ava, because she said Ava is “obsessed” with the series.

“She just started getting into Harry Potter books, and all she does is read,” she said. “The books transport her to a magical place and she loses track of time, so I support it. [The party] is wonderful. We love all the activities the library has to offer.”

Roman Pfeifer, 11, volunteered to play a dragon in one of the Tri-Wizard Challenge games.

“I love Harry Potter Day, and I love being able to do all these fun things.

The movies are really cool. They have a great story,” said the Huntley Middle School student.

Alyssa Leston, 16, was volunteering at the Forbidden Forest because she was excited to make a Harry Potter world come to life.

“Harry Potter is awesome and I’m having loads of fun,” she said. “Harry Potter is creative and there are a lot of truths hidden underneath the story, like loyalty, sacrifice, friendship and right vs. wrong. [J.K. Rowling] is an incredible writer.”

Library employee Spencer Tritt was playing the role of Harry Potter as he greeted patrons at the library’s entrance and took photos with the kids.

“This event brings in a ton of kids and we like getting people in here. It’s great to show off our new building,” he

said. “It’s important to get kids interested in the library during the summer. So

it’s good to have programs like this to keep them thinking about books.

It has been estimated that more than 27% of a child’s daily calories are coming from snacks, so providing the right kind of snacks is not only important but necessary in helping meet a child’s daily nutrition requirements.

The first thing the child may need when he or she gets home is a small source of fuel. The best way to get that is by snacking on carbohydrates. Our brains’ preferred source of fuel is sugar and, luckily, all carbohydrates break down into sugar. So having different sources of carbohydrates available for kids to snack on when they get home is a great way to give them a burst of energy so they can be active and alert before their next meal. But there are different sources of carbohydrates, so it is important to choose the right ones. Look for whole grains such as whole-grain crackers and bread to give them energy but also provide vitamins, minerals and fiber. Of course you can never go wrong with a piece of cut-up fresh fruit. Leave the skin on for the added fiber bonus!

One important nutrient to always have on hand for after-school snacks is different sources of protein. Protein builds, maintains and repairs the

tissues in your body such as muscles, which is important for active kids.

Protein also requires a longer time to digest than carbohydrates, so putting a protein in your snack can give you just enough energy to get to the next meal, without overeating and spoiling dinner. A child’s protein needs vary by his or her weight: an average of 1 gram of protein for every 2 pounds the child weighs. So simply take your child’s weight and divide by 2 to find his or her protein needs. With snacking on the rise, it is important to fit protein sources into those in-between-meals snacks to help kids meet their needs. Quick sources of protein can be a cheese stick (about 7 grams), a glass of milk (8 grams), turkey slices (2 oz. about 10 grams) a hard-boiled egg (6 grams) or 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (7 grams.) Pairing carbohydrates and protein together in a snack is a perfect combination of providing enough energy without overdoing it.

It is always important to factor in your child’s hydration when he or she gets home from school. Children require 5 to 11 glasses a day of total water (coming from liquids and food) to meet their needs. With this in mind, stock your refrigerator with water flavored with fresh lemon or other fresh fruit for your children to grab when they get home. It will help meet those needs and avoid the calories and sugar that come from juice or other sugar-sweetened beverages.

A new state law will make it expensive for local governments that choose not to comply with orders to turn over documents ruled public under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. Gov. Bruce Rauner in July signed House Bill 4715 into law, which significantly increases fines that can be levied against local governments if they violate court orders or binding attorney general’s opinions that a FOIA request denied by the body must be made public. The law is one of two signed by Rauner that collectively are called “Molly’s Law,” named in honor of a family that encountered roadblocks trying to investigate their young daughter’s death.

House Bill 4715 allows the court to fine a government up to $1,000 a day if it does not comply with an order to comply with a FOIA request and turn over disputed records. It also gives people the ability to sue should a government fail to comply after 35 days with a binding opinion from the attorney general that a record must be released.

Their efforts were stymied to the point that a wrongful-death lawsuit they filed in 2015 was tossed out due to the two-year statute of limitations. No one was ever charged over Young’s death.

The companion bill to Molly’s Law that Rauner also signed, House Bill 6083, extends the statute of limitations for wrongful death cases to five years after the date of death or one year after the criminal case against the perpetrator concludes.

“This bill provides families a longer timeframe to bring wrongful death actions against perpetrators of intentional violent crimes, and gives families access to the necessary public information to find closure in a loved one’s death,” Rauner said in a statement.

State lawmakers in 2009, after the arrest and impeachment of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, significantly strengthened the state FOIA, which media and good-government groups had long complained was far too weak, too easy to abuse and contained no punishments for violating it.

Molly’s Law takes effect Jan. 1.

Bruce Rauner or the Republican gains traction with his ideas to “shake up” the state.

Each side has millions of dollars to devote to the battles, which could define the remaining two years of Rauner’s first term.

Rauner blames House Speaker Michael Madigan and the Democrats for the state’s long-running financial predicament, and Republicans are asking voters to punish them for it in the November election. No opening delay seen from halt of dunes pavilion work

CHESTERTON, Ind. – Work to refurbish and privatize a pavilion at Indiana Dunes State Park to bring restaurants, a rooftop bar and a banquet center along Lake Michigan is temporarily on hold until the state Department of Natural Resources gets permission from the National Park Service to move ahead.

NPS and DNR officials said the main obstacle is a technical matter of determining whether the pavilion and adjacent banquet center will be designated

as a public facility or whether the state will need to find replacement land of the same or higher value to replace it. The replacement land does not have to be at the same location.

Trump backers claim shift in his immigration rhetoric

By JILL COLVIN and LUIS ALONSO LUGO The Associated Press CLEVELAND – As he turns his attention to the general election, Donald Trump is signaling that he is ready to tone down his fiery rhetoric on illegal immigration – at least behind closed doors.

At the same time, Republican officials appear eager to push him in a more moderate direction, telling Hispanics that he has abandoned his divisive primary pledge to deport the estimated 11 million people living in the country illegally – even if Trump hasn’t said so publicly himself.

“Trump has already said that he will not do massive deportations,” Helen Aguirre Ferre, the Republican National Committee’s director of Hispanic communications, told reporters at a Spanish-language briefing at the party’s convention two weeks ago. Instead, she said, “He will focus on removing the violent undocumented who have criminal records and live in the country.”

It’s a statement that may come as a surprise to Trump’s legion of loyal followers, many of whom were first drawn to Trump because of his hard-line views on immigration and border security. Trump has vowed to build a wall along the length of the southern border and use a “deportation force” to track down and deport anyone in the country illegally.

“You’re going to have a deportation force, and you’re going to do it humanely,” Trump said in a TV interview last fall. He estimated in a separate interview that the process would take between 18 months to two years.

But those who would like to see Trump move in a more inclusive direction said Trump has indicated that he no longer advocates that plan. As evidence, they point to several vague sentences from an interview Trump gave earlier this summer to Bloomberg News during a whirlwind trip to Scotland to visit his golf courses.

“President Obama has mass deported vast numbers of people – the most ever, and it’s never reported. I think people are going to find that I have not only the best policies, but I will have the biggest heart of anybody,” Trump told the outlet. Pressed on whether he would issue “mass deportations,” Trump responded: “No, I would not call it mass deportations.”

“We are going to get rid of a lot of bad dudes who are here,” he was quoted as saying.

It remains unclear whether Trump was taking rhetorical or ideological issue with the phrase, and Trump has not made similar comments at any point since. Asked how he would manage the deportations at a press conference in Florida Wednesday, Trump said only, “We’re going to have a whole policy on that over the next three weeks.”

This kind of ambiguity is not unusual for Trump, whose vague statements often leave room for numerous, sometimes conflicting interpretations.

But for some who are supporting Trump and want to see him moderate, the meaning is clear.

“Two or three weeks ago, [Trump] conceded in an interview in Bloomberg in which he said the term ‘massive deportation’ is not used by him, and it was planted by a journalist,” said the head of Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, Alfonso Aguilar, who recently signed a letter along with several other Latino conservatives endorsing Trump.

Aguilar said that he had seen in Trump’s comments “something very interesting, which can be the beginning of an openness toward the center on immigration. He said he wants to remove only people with criminal record, not people without criminal record. It could be the openness toward a legalization.”

A similar interpretation has also developed among Hispanic and religious leaders who have met with Trump privately in recent months.

Clinton speech was sprawling, but historic If Hillary Clinton wants to make even more history, then she is off to a good start.

Her forceful acceptance speech was well-focused on its target, Donald Trump, but occasionally rambling in the elaboration of its theme: “stronger together.” The sprawl is partly a result of the expanding reach of Clinton’s campaign.

Recent presidential elections have been “base” elections, in which each party seeks to maximize turnout by its core supporters.

That’s not what Clinton, the first woman to be the presidential nominee of a major U.S. political party, has in mind. Her campaign seeks to encompass everyone from socialist supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders to Republicans disillusioned by the erratic ways and juvenile insults of Trump.

Sanders supporters – some of whom continued to be disruptive in the arena – were offered higher taxes on “Wall Street, corporations and the super rich” and a throwaway line about “unfair trade deals.”

Moderate Republicans, meanwhile, were offered a life raft away from the moral and political Titanic that is Trump.

At its core, Clinton’s speech, like the Democratic convention that it brought to a close, was about what it means to be American – and what it doesn’t.

A policy of crude religious exclusion was no more popular in Philadelphia this week than it was in the same city in 1787. When Khizr Khan, the father of a Muslim-American soldier who gave his life for his country, offered to lend Trump his personal copy of the U.S. Constitution, American politics gained an iconic moment.

“There are no guarantees,” Clinton said, that political contests turn out for the best.

(The one between Clinton and Trump is currently close.) “A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man you can trust with nuclear weapons,” she said, homing in on the extraordinary danger Trump represents.

Clinton’s positive message never attained such clarity or directness.

She has trouble translating her policy expertise into digestible ideas, her plans into a vision. But she accurately portrayed the stakes of this election, and thus advanced her cause.

There’s no Bernie revolution without Bernie One hesitates to discuss the small group of Bernie Sanders followers throwing tantrums at the Democratic convention. Some 90 percent of Sanders backers say they’ve already moved their support to Hillary Clinton.

But when a tiny number – some with duct tape on their mouths saying “silenced” – marched out of the hall and straight into the media tent, the “journalists” pounded prose on “sharp divisions” in the party.

The unhappy few already had booed at Sanders himself. They heckled the progressive warrior Elizabeth Warren.

Sanders’ other supporters rolled their eyes at the histrionics, but what could they do?

When Sanders finally offered total support for Clinton, he showed himself to be a giant political leader. That he did so after an email leak confirming that the Democratic National Committee had tilted against his candidacy made him taller still.

Sanders already had pushed the Democratic Party to adopt much of his program, demonstrating a skill at

In sum, Sanders deserved the adulation that friends and former rivals poured on him at the convention.

So this was a heck of a time for a handful of acolytes to grab at his spotlight, some parroting the imbecilities of the Trump campaign.

To borrow from Dante’s “Inferno,” one should not reflect on such people but take a look and pass them by.

A good restaurant knows that there are certain customers it has to throw out. They’re too disruptive. They give the place a bad reputation and scare off others.

Sanders himself gets some blame for having fed his following a constant diet of grievance and belief that the electoral process had been “rigged” against them. The nominating race was lumpy all around. The DNC may have put a

thumb on the scale for Clinton, but she was subject to unfairness, as well, in the coverage of the campaigns and the undemocratic nature of the caucuses that Sanders won.

I wasn’t a great fan of Sanders. He had a reputation for not working well with others, and I distrust populist campaigns centered on a charismatic figure. But I always admired Sanders for his consistency, his obvious love for country and many of his ideas.

So it was painful to watch Sanders being treated so disrespectfully by people he had led to the portals of power.

And at his finest hour, too.

A few fancied out loud that they could run the Bernie revolution without Bernie, which is kind of laughable.

With Sanders would go the cameras and the attention, leaving behind a skeleton crew of exhibitionists.

That said, a lasting Sanders revolution may be in the making by others.

Sophisticated backers are now recruiting like-minded candidates for lower office, building a progressive power base and expanded leadership. (A slip

in the suggestion box reads, Call this a “movement” rather than a “revolution.”)

As Sanders faced hostile members of his California delegation, he laid down the stakes in no uncertain terms. “It is easy to boo, but it is harder to look your kids in the face who would be living under a Donald Trump presidency,” he said. “Trump is the worst candidate for president in the modern history of this country.”

A California Democratic Party official wisely advised against self-pity.

“You fought, and you won a seat at the table,” Daraka Larimore-Hall said. “We have to act like we have that seat ... and stop acting like we’ve been shut out.”

Just a gentle reminder here: Clinton won the California primary by more than 400,000 votes, and Sanders got these followers excellent seats at the table. The revolution, for the time being, is still his.

By JOSHUA KENDALL Special to The Washington Post When Chelsea Clinton took the stage Thursday night to introduce her mother, she faced a tall order. The once and perhaps future first daughter was in direct competition with longtime friend Ivanka Trump, who emerged as the star of last week’s Republican convention.

Even die-hard Democrats were impressed by the performance of the glamorous and well-spoken businesswoman often referred to as “Trump’s better half.” Tweeted Mia Farrow, “When is Ivanka running for President?”

Clinton, who has long been one of her mother’s closest political advisers, is unlikely to give the Democratic nominee as big a boost. But fortunately for her, Hillary Clinton is far less dependent on the next generation than Donald Trump. Since the combative Trump has so few political allies, he had little choice but to turn the Republic National Convention into a family affair in which his four adult children all held coveted prime-time speaking slots.

Although Donald Jr., Eric and Tiffany were also effective character witnesses, Ivanka, who typically speaks to her father several times a day, was perhaps most effective in countering her father’s perceived flaws. But even if Hillary Clinton is not relying on her

daughter to restore her image, Chelsea probably would play a significant role in her mother’s presidency, a departure from most first daughters.

Whoever wins the election in November, America is poised to have its most consequential first daughter since Anna Roosevelt. In 1943, the 37-year-old eldest child of Franklin Roosevelt, who had worked as a journalist for a decade, moved into the White House to serve as her father’s special assistant. She soon became FDR’s “expediter,” as Washington insiders put it, the aide who both got people in to see the president and got the president to do things. Many White House watchers were convinced that FDR’s decision to put Harry Truman on the ticket in the summer of 1944 was entirely hers. As Life put it in early 1945, “Daddy’s girl is running Daddy.”

None of the first daughters since 1945 have been too intimately involved in affairs of state.

Chelsea and Ivanka are major figures in the 2016 campaign. While Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, were the ones who forced out Trump’s longtime campaign manager, Corey Lewandoski, Chelsea helped formulate the response to some of Bernie Sanders’s attacks last winter – such as those that touched on her mother’s support of the Affordable Care Act. Both daughters also are likely to

be enlisted as part-time first ladies: Chelsea because the nation’s first gentleman would want to pursue other interests and Ivanka because her stepmother seems to like her privacy.

While Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton promise to take the country in vastly different directions, the two daughters have much in common. Both Chelsea and Ivanka grew up as children of privilege in families shaken by severe marital discord and infidelity. And just as the young Ivanka was constructing towers with Legos in her father’s office, Chelsea has been accompanying her mother to campaign rallies since age 2.

As girls, each one turned serious early in part because neither enjoyed much unstructured playtime with her parents. Although she may well become America’s first first mom, Clinton the parent has resembled the vast majority of the 43 men who have served as president. Like Trump, she, too, has held extraordinarily demanding jobs, and work has been one of the primary ways in which she has bonded with her daughter. Today, just as Ivanka serves as an executive vice president of the Trump Organization, Chelsea serves as vice chair of the Clinton Foundation.

Politically, Ivanka Trump, who last week described herself as neither “Republican or Democrat,” and Chelsea Clinton are not all that far

apart. Ivanka’s allusion in Cleveland to the importance of equal pay for equal work seems lifted not from anything her father has ever said, but from one of Hillary Clinton’s stump speeches.

The major difference between the two is that Chelsea, who holds a trio of advance degrees, is more wonkish – she’s an expert on health policy, for example – and seems a bit more uncomfortable in the media spotlight.

But both women are dutiful daughters who will keep doing whatever they can to help their parents achieve their professional dreams. In the run-up to the election, while Ivanka Trump is expected to focus on shoring up her father’s support among women, Chelsea Clinton is likely to work on humanizing her mother. After January, it’s hard to imagine that either daughter would turn down whatever assignment dropped on her lap.

At the end of this scorched-earth campaign, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will no doubt want to avoid each other. But their daughters, who can readily identify with each other’s predicament, may well be able to pick back up their friendship.

DeKalb County Barn Tour scheduled DAILY CHRONICLE Modern livestock and grain farms, centennial farms, an archaeological dig site and repurposed barns are all included in the 2016 DeKalb County Barn Tour taking place in northern Illinois from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13.

This unique opportunity to tour local historic barns is sponsored jointly by the J.F. Glidden Homestead and Historical Center and the DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association of DeKalb. The self-driving tour of the South Grove and Mayfield township areas includes a guided tour at each of eight barns with demonstrations, displays and children’s activities along the way.

At each location, visitors can take a guided tour of the historic barn and then enjoy other activities at the site.

Explore agriculture in DAAHA’s hands-on activity tent at site 1. For an additional fee (suggested donation $10), drive a modern tractor and learn about today’s tractor computer technology.

At site 2, see a demonstration of the old-time barn pegging construction method. At site 3, learn about the barn quilt craze, those amazing wooden quilt-block designs seen on the outside of many barns today; and don’t miss the model A on display.

Fresh produce also will be available for purchase at site 3, as well as fresh-roasted corn at site 7.

The DeKalb-Kane Cattlemen’s Association will offer a steak or hot dog lunch at site 5. The Monsanto employee volunteer group will perform grain bin safety demonstrations at site 4. Learn some local history when you stop by the Kirkland Historical Society tent at stop 6. At stop 8, take advantage of the rare opportunity to see an archaeological dig, which is taking place at the historic Joseph Glidden barn.

Culver’s of Sycamore fundraiser will support Special Olympics DAILY CHRONICLE Culver’s in Sycamore is partnering with Special Olympics Illinois this month with several in-store activities planned, most notably the second annual ButterBurgers & Badges fundraising event scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9.

ButterBurgers & Badges will feature local law enforcement officers providing table service for guests dining inside, and also delivering burgers and frozen custard desserts to those visiting the drive-thru at the 1200 DeKalb Ave. location.

The officers will collect tips for their service, which, along with $1 for every purchase of any size concrete mixer, will benefit Special Olympics. In addition, local Special Olympics athletes will be on hand to greet guests and sign autographs.

Funds raised will help Special Olympics Illinois continue its programs that provide year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Culver’s will support Special Olympics throughout the month of August by displaying “Change for Champions” canisters near its registers where guests will have the opportunity to offer their support.

BRIEFS Children can get a healthy start to school

The DeKalb County Health Department will hold a Healthy Start to School event Thursday, Aug. 4, and Aug. 11.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the DeKalb County Health Campus, 2550 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb.

School and sports physicals and immunizations will be available. Call 815-748-2460 to make an appointment or for information. The health department will try to accommodate walk-ins. Medical card (Meridian, Harmony and Illinois Health Connect) and most private insurance will be accepted.

Children are welcome to join their parents in any of the five 20-minute green living workshops. Otherwise they can participate in the ongoing games, crafts and tours of the Community Gardens.

Veterans coffee meet-and-greets planned

The DeKalb County Forty and Eight is coordinating a veterans coffee meet-and-greet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10.

The hope is to have a veterans meet-and-greet on the second Wednesday of each month at various locations.

The events are open to all veterans or anyone interested in attending and should last about one hour.

The first veteran coffee meet-and-greet will be hosted by the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center, 2600 N. Annie Glidden Road, and will be held in the multi-purpose room.

Bears rookie WR Braverman maintaining focus on grind of camp

By JOHN LAVACCARE jlavaccare@shawmedia.com BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Bears seventh-round draft pick Daniel Braverman has drawn cheers from fans at training camp in Bourbonnais for his play as a kick returner and slot receiver. The 5-7, 175-pound Western Michigan alum said he likes to keep his newfound popularity out of his mind when he’s on the practice field.

“You can’t focus on the outside influences,” Braverman said following Sunday’s practice. “You’ve got to focus on the play, focus on your job, because if you don’t do your job, then you’re not going to be playing in front of nobody.”

Braverman does allow in his father’s influence; the two talk to each other on the phone every night, even during training camp. Braverman said his father, who raised him as a single parent, is one of the main reasons for his confidence on the field.

“He talks to me every day on the phone,” Braverman said. “There’ll never be a night when he’s not trying to pump me up, even though I don’t need it. Still, every day, he’s all over it, he’s all about this stuff.”

The rookie wideout said another big influence this offseason has been Bears receivers coach Curtis Johnson, who he called one of his favorite coaches.

“I’ve been blessed with a lot of great

coaches, but this guy, I mean, he’s had so much experience, being at University of Miami and the New Orleans Saints, he’s got so much experience, but he also makes it fun and very competitive,” Braverman said. “He’s a great coach. If you guys hear him, he’s always getting on us, but it’s always positive. He makes you want to keep practicing harder. He’s really a great guy.”

Braverman returned punts and some kickoffs during his time at Western Michigan, and will compete for the Bears’ returning job this offseason.

Braverman said he “wouldn’t be mad” if he won a role on the return team, but said he would be willing to accept any role.

“It’s not up to me,” Braverman said.

“I’m just trying to do everything I can with the opportunities I get. If coaches put me there or they don’t put me there. If they put me at gunner, then I have to be the gunner. Just trying to do whatever they tell me to do.”

The Bears’ preseason games will be important for Braverman, as he fights for a spot on the roster in a special teams or receiving capacity. However, he said he’s not yet looking forward to the preseason, preferring instead to take a one-day-at-a-time approach.

“I’m just worried about practice tomorrow and my meetings tonight,” Braverman said. “Critiquing on what I need to get better at today, then focusing on tomorrow, and when that comes, that’ll come.”

Small world: Rivals run into each other at Columbia University

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com Jake Peloquin’s ears perked up when he heard the name Derek Kyler called by a coach.

The Sycamore linebacker didn’t expect to hear any mention of the DeKalb quarterback – or really anyone else for that matter – at Columbia University football camp in New York City.

Unbeknownst to the other, both were at the Ivy League school’s football camp last month.

“I was walking back from a drink break and I heard his name called off,” said Peloquin, entering his senior year at Sycamore. “I looked around and was like, ‘What?’ Then I went over there and talked to him for a little bit.”

Kyler, whose been to almost half a dozen camps this summer, is sporting a 3.82 GPA, and like Peloquin, is eyeballing an IVY League school to continue to his career academically and

athletically.

“I was very surprised,” Kyler said. “I thought I saw him when we were taking a knee and the coach was talking, then he came up to me later and started talking to me. It was pretty cool.”

Kyler said Columbia is in his top couple schools right now. He said Colgate has offered already and he’s also interested in Harvard, Princeton and the Air Force Academy.

Peloquin – currently No. 1 in his graduating class – said he was invited to a Harvard camp as a sophomore, and that in turn opened a lot of doors for him. Cornell, Carnegie Melon, Penn and Princeton are among the schools he’s looking at right now.

“I know I want to be an engineer, so I’m a little more focused on that than playing football, but I’ll use that to get into a college if I can,” Peloquin said.

“Columbia is my favorite so far both for football and academically.”

MINNEAPOLIS – The White Sox made their first move before the trade deadline Sunday morning, dealing veteran left-handed reliever Zach Duke to the St. Louis Cardinals for Triple-A center field prospect Charlie Tilson.

Then they lost to the Minnesota Twins, 6-4, dropping a series to the American League Central’s last place team and falling to 17-23 against the division. The trade, while not unexpected, was the first tangible evidence of a selling mode before the Monday trade deadline. The game’s result was just the latest proof it’s the right choice.

Just how much more trading is done by 3 p.m. will depend on what general manager Rick Hahn can get in return.

Everything is on the table, including All-Star lefties Chris Sale and Jose Quintana, although there is a growing sense that the Duke trade is more in line with what the Sox, who are under no pressure to deal now, will do now.

The 23-year-old Tilson, who bats left and throws left, is a fast, high-contact, low-power hitter who is expected to be wearing a Sox uniform this season, perhaps soon. The former second-round draft pick out of New Trier (Hahn’s alma mater) is batting .282 with four homers, eight triples, 16 doubles, 34 RBIs and 15

Jose Abreu, at one time the centerpiece of the offense, was given a day off – he had failed to hit a home run and drove in only eight runs since June 23.

Carson Fulmer, the No. 8 overall pick a year ago, issued his fifth walk and allowed his eighth run in his fifth appearance. Shortstop Tim Anderson, the first-round pick from 2013 batting .276 with a .284 on-base percentage, collected two hits but struck out for the 57th time in 197 plate appearances to go with two walks all season. Anderson also was thrown out when he strayed too far off second base.

Growing pains for all.

“It’s tough,” said Todd Frazier, who walked twice and struck out twice playing with a virus that kept him out of the first two games of the series. “I didn’t think we’d be in this position right now.

I thought we’d be right in the thick of things but it kind of spiraled a little bit.”

Frazier destroyed a bat in the dugout after taking a good pitch for a third strike on one of his strikeouts. But it’s kind of past the point of frustration for Sox players, who await to see who follows Duke out the door Monday.

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. – The stars never aligned this magnificently for Jimmy Walker.

In the longest final day at the PGA Championship in 64 years, Walker produced three big birdies on the back nine at Baltusrol and held his nerve against the No. 1 player in the world to close with a 3-under 67 for a one-shot victory over defending champion Jason Day. Walker provided a little too much drama at the end. After watching Day make a 15-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th to close the gap to one shot, Walker went for the green when a par would win it. He missed to the right in deep rough, safely pitched on some 35 feet away and had to hole a 3-foot putt for the victory.

Bach defends IOC handling of Russian doping scandal

RIO DE JANEIRO – IOC President Thomas Bach defended the decision not to ban Russia’s entire team from the Rio Games, declaring Sunday that the doping crisis won’t damage the Olympic body’s credibility and taking a swipe at global anti-doping officials for failing to act sooner against state-sponsored cheating in Russia.

Speaking at a news conference five days before the opening of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Bach said a total ban on Russia for systematic doping “would not be justifiable” on either moral or legal grounds. Bach was peppered with questions about the International Olympic Committee’s handling of the Russian scandal, including the decision to give international sports federations the authority to decide which Russian athletes should be cleared to compete in Rio. Asked whether the ruling represented a failure by the IOC, Bach said: “No. This is for very obvious reasons.”

World Serious: Indians acquire Miller, Lucroy vetoes deal

CLEVELAND – Serious about winning the World Series, the Indians batted .500 in making a pair of major trades on Sunday.

Call it an All-Star split doubleheader.

Going all in for October, the AL Central leader acquired All-Star left-handed reliever Andrew Miller from the New York Yankees for four minor leaguers.

The deal came less than 12 hours after the Indians had reached agreement on the parameters of a swap with Milwaukee for Brewers All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy. However, that trade was stopped

by Lucroy, who refused to waive his notrade clause and turned down a chance to join a contender.

“There were some circumstances that came up that made me void it, obviously,” Lucroy said in Milwaukee. “I think when it eventually comes out, everyone will understand why. I’m not going to comment on any specifics.”

Boykin has plenty to prove after a coach said injury may end career

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Brandon Boykin has played in every game over his four NFL seasons. He has eight interceptions and 37 passes defensed in his career.

Having joined the Bears on Wednesday, Boykin had to wait until Sunday to get his chance with the second team at nickel corner. He has a long way to go, but he points to his experience helping him in the upcoming roster battle.

“I think [Chicago’s defense] fits well. Still learning everything, learning people, learning coaches, learning this whole environment,” he said. “But I know I can play. I’ve played in this league, about to be five years. I know can contribute a lot, bringing athleticism and takeaways to the defense.”

After three productive seasons in Philadelphia, Boykin was traded last summer to Pittsburgh. That’s where things got strange for Boykin, who didn’t get as many snaps as many expected, considering he was one of the better-graded nickel corners in the league.

In early June, Steelers defensive backs coach Carnell Lake said at a fantasy football camp that Boykin had a potentially career-ending hip injury.

“They put out a report that I wasn’t healthy and had some career-ending injury, but yet, I’m here, playing,” Boykin said.

The Panthers signed Boykin in late March before releasing him in mid-May. He worked out for the Bears and said he had a choice to go back to Philadelphia, but signed with Chicago.

“A lot of things have happened in the span of a year for me, coming from being the top of my position to being traded to not even being on a team for a minute and a coach saying I have some career-ending injury,” he said. “It’s been some adversity for me, but it’s definitely taught me to just take things one day at a time and just be appreciative for everything.”

Callahan, who impressed the coaches last season, but is a second-year, undrafted player out of Rice. The Bears are thin behind Callahan at the inside position, where Boykin is experienced.

“I’m really comfortable in the slot,” he said. “Only been out there a few days, got out there with the [second-team players] today and was able to keep up and get a pass breakup in 1-on-1’s. Just taking it one day at a time.”

Boykin said he thinks about the 2013 season “a lot”, when he had six interceptions (including a picksix of Jay Cutler) and 16 passes defensed, and wants to prove to the Bears – and the rest of the NFL – he can return to that production level.

“That was one of my greatest years of football. It was about the opportunity,” he said. “Unfortunately, the past couple of years I haven’t had that great of it, especially in Pittsburgh. Opportunity is all you need, and then you have to take care of the rest. I know I’m confident that I can still play at that level. I’ve just got to get that opportunity.”

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Pitcher Jon Lester drove in Jason Heyward with a two-strike squeeze bunt in the 12th inning, and the Cubs overcame a sixrun deficit to beat the Seattle Mariners, 7-6, on Sunday night.

Heyward sparked the winning rally with a leadoff double off the wall in right-center. He advanced on Willson Contreras’ fly ball to center against Cody Martin (1-1) before Lester managed to get a bunt down right in front

of the plate.

Heyward made it home with a headfirst slide, sparking a frenzied celebration at Wrigley Field. Hector Rondon (2-2) pitched two innings for the win.

The Cubs trailed 6-3 before they pushed across three runs in the ninth against Steve Cishek, handing the sidewinding right-hander his sixth blown save in 31 opportunities. Addison Russell hit an RBI single and Contreras drove in another run when he hustled down the line to beat out a potential double-play grounder.

Dear Reader: You definitely should talk to your doctor about that. Home blood pressure monitors are easy and inexpensive, and provide you and your doctor with the information you need to protect your health.

About one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure, or hypertension. And about half of those with high blood pressure don’t have it under control.

Hypertension increases the risk for heart disease and stroke. In my opinion, hypertension is one of the most important public health problems in the United States, as it affects so many people. Recognizing and treating it brings enormous health benefits.

You always have a blood pressure, every minute of the night and day, and it can change a lot from one moment to the next.

What matters most to your health is where your blood pressure is on average. Before we had home blood pressure monitoring machines, the way a doctor determined whether your blood pressure was controlled was to have you make a trip to his or her office.

If you think about it, that’s pretty silly.

The doctor is supposed to estimate what your average blood pressure is all day and all night based on one visit to the doctor’s office every several months. Furthermore, many people get nervous when they visit the doctor – yes, even my patients. So their blood pressure temporarily goes up, and is higher than it normally is. Home blood pressure machines make it easy to get a much better estimate of what your average blood pressure really is.

Some bridge players are too busy thinking about their hand and do not consider partner’s plays and problems. In this deal, how can the defenders defeat three spades after West leads the heart king?

West was just about worth his nudge to two hearts. At least he had good trumps, even if the rest of his hand was waste paper. North’s three hearts was a cue-bid raise, showing at least game-invitational values with three or more trumps. South had no interest in going higher.

If West, after winning the first trick, has his head in the clouds, he will immediately continue with the heart queen. Then the contract cannot be beaten.

At trick one, it is East’s job to send an attitude signal, to tell partner whether or not he would like another round of hearts played. Here, East knows that South has at most two hearts. East is also aware that his side needs five tricks. From where may they come?

The defenders surely have to take two hearts and three clubs. But that will almost certainly require West to lead twice through dummy’s club king.

There isn’t a moment to lose. East must discourage with his heart three at trick one. Then, if West is watching and trusting, he will shift to a club. East will win that trick with his jack, play a low heart to his partner’s queen, and take two more club tricks when West leads that suit again.
