Aniston essay inspires actresses to address sexist standards

LOS ANGELES – When one of Hollywood’s most objectified women talks about tabloid culture, people listen. But while actresses are cheering Jennifer Aniston’s recent essay connecting the media’s obsession with her looks to the overall objectification of women, most are resigned that reality will be slow to catch up with the conversation.

“Entrenched ways take a while to change,” said Marisa Tomei, “but having the conversations and opening it up, objecting to it or seeing different points of view about it is really helpful.”

Aniston wrote in her Huffington Post essay earlier this month that constant tabloid speculation over whether she’s pregnant contributes to sexist cultural standards that equate a woman’s worth with her appearance and maternal status.

“We use celebrity ‘news’ to perpetuate this dehumanizing view of females,” Aniston wrote.

“More scrutiny has always been leveled at women, no matter the context,” said Ella Ceron, digital entertainment editor for Teen Vogue magazine. “Women are held to different standards than men, and are taught from a young age to value their looks and their grooming and their weight very seriously.”

While tabloids have long seen women through an appearance-focused lens, other recent media coverage unduly aimed at actresses’ looks has inspired vocal criticism online.

Other actresses have been speaking out against sexist beauty standards for years. Barbra Streisand said it’s “backward” for our culture to consider actresses in their 40s as somehow “too old.”

BRIEFS 2 sent to hospital after Route 64 crash

SYCAMORE – Two women were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital after a crash Wednesday on Route 64.

About 6:45 p.m., Nicki Morningstar, 36, of the 9200 block of Route 64, Sycamore, was driving a 2010 Chevy Malibu. Morningstar was turning into her driveway when Bianca Gruns, 22, of the 10500 block of South 83rd Court, Palos Hills, rear-ended her in a 2000 Chevy Tracker, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

The DeKalb and Sycamore fire departments took the women to Kishwaukee Hospital. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, according to the release.

Gruns was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Crash first responders to be honored

SYCAMORE – A mother and daughter who found themselves upside down in a car in 3 feet of water will make an appearance at Monday’s Sycamore City Council meeting, along with the responding officers who rescued them.

A brief celebration at the beginning the meeting will recognize the first responders, including DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies, Sycamore firefighters and paramedics, and a passer-by who called 911 that day.

Quaesha Johnson, 24, of the 300 block of Moseley Street, Elgin, who was driving, was able to escape the vehicle, but her daughter, Alaya Ochoa,

was trapped inside, strapped in her car seat.

First responders went into the water and lifted the vehicle to free the girl, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said.

Ochoa and her mother initially were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital.

Ochoa later was taken to Central DuPage Hospital. At the time, police reported the 3-year-old was in serious condition.

Local National Night Out event Tuesday

DeKALB – Local public safety agencies are teaming up to offer National Night Out, a free community awareness fair, on Tuesday in the Target parking lot, 2555 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

From 5 to 8 p.m., the parking lot will be the site of information and vendor booths, demonstrations and activities. Visitors can watch self-defense and police K-9 demonstrations and meet police officers from the Northern Illinois University, DeKalb and Sycamore police departments and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, and firefighters with the DeKalb and Sycamore fire departments.

There will be free snacks and games, and booths staffed by such community agencies as the Kishwaukee Family YMCA, Family Service Agency, Adventure Works and more.

Children can learn valuable skills in the fire department smoke house and in the 911 simulation center, where they can safely practice dialing 911 so they are ready in a real emergency.

Local woman organizes book donation in sheriff sergeant’s memory

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – If the pen is, in fact, mightier than the sword, DeKalb County Sheriff’s officers are armed to the teeth.

Pat Overton, the wife of former DeKalb County Sheriff’s Sgt. Harold Overton, who died last year, started in her husband’s memory DeKalb County Cares, a nonprofit that partners with the sheriff’s office. The organization recently supplied each patrol car with a duffel bag flush with books and drawstring bags to give children at the scene of potentially traumatizing Harold calls. Each duffel bag Overton contains 15 books ranging in difficulty from early childhood to high school-level reading.

Harold Overton, a champion for children’s safety, would be beaming to learn local kids were provided comfort in his memory, his wife said.

“A book is a wonderful thing, and to give any kind of comfort to any child is just a good scenario,” Pat Overton said.

“And I want all children to look at a man in a uniform and have a very positive [reaction]. My kids did. They grew up with police officers.

Despite Harold Overton’s sometimes intimidating demeanor, he seemed to possess a natural ability to diffuse tense situations, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said.

“He would love this program,” he said. “He would be so excited about it, and it’s a great way to remember what he did at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, because he is part of a lot of the foundation here.”

Harold Overton began working with the sheriff’s office Sept. 1, 1966, and was the first officer in the department’s history to work there more than 20 years.

Exactly 49 years later, on Sept. 1, 2015, Harold Overton died of heart failure.

“His father was a dispatcher here years ago and tried for a long time to get him to become a deputy,” Pat Overton said. “[Harold] started out at $325 a month, but we had a wonderful time. It was all family. We all worked together.

We knew each other’s wives and husbands. It was a wonderful experience for my family, so all I’m doing is expanding it.”

On Saturday mornings, the roughand-tumble sergeant could be seen cozying up with his two kids – each of them glued to an episode of “Rapid T. Rabbit,” while a police scanner hummed white noise in the background.

As an adult, you weren’t likely to catch much sympathy from Harold Overton. But as a young kid in the wrong place at the wrong time, he

Kish Fest Parade storms back into DeKalb

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Although storms thundered through DeKalb early Friday and the skies remained gray, it did not put a damper on Kishwaukee Fest Parade.

After a hiatus in 2015, the Kish Fest Parade returned to the streets of DeKalb and was well-received by those who attended.

People began to gather along the sides of Lincoln Highway in downtown DeKalb around 6 p.m., with nearly 200 people lining the streets in anticipation of the parade. The event began with a small car show, where six cars lined up in the middle of the street in a display.

DeKalb resident Nick Misitano brought out his car to the show at the invitation of his neighbor. Misitano said it is a great event to get the town excited about being out here and about it being summer.

Many families attended the event with excited children in tow. Emily Ziegler and her husband, Dustin, of DeKalb brought 4-year-old Brigg and 2-year-old Sawyer after reading about the parade on Facebook.

“We are here for the candy and to support friends who are in the parade ... ,” Ziegler said.

As the clock passed seven, the cars moved out of the way, and “The StarSpangled Banner” was performed as police cars from the DeKalb Police Department and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office approached. A team from the sheriff’s office gave a K-9 demonstration while two people dressed as pieces of bacon carried a banner announcing the beginning of the parade. A color guard comprised of Boy Scouts from also came out with supporters, rang- judgeship.

The DeKalb educational community also had a large presence in the parade. The DeKalb Classroom Teachers Association had a large contingent that marched with its own band, while the DeKalb High School Marching Barbs performed to advertise the band’s fundraising efforts for a trip to Ireland.

The parade ended with Santa riding along on a float, exciting many of the children there. Jacob Huff, 5, of Waterman said his favorite part was “when all the candy was coming” and that his favorite float was “Santa.”

Events for Kishwaukee Fest continue over the weekend, with the BaconPalooza Swine & Wine Fest on Saturday at VanBuer Plaza in DeKalb and the Turning Back Time Car Show on Sunday in Sycamore.

LARRY A. DUNLAP Born: Feb. 22, 1971 Died: July 16, 2016

Larry A. Dunlap, 45, of DeKalb, IL, passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2016, at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL. Born Feb. 22, 1971, to Elmer A. and Carol Jean Dunlap. Larry was the youngest of six children and lived in his hometown of Newark until 2003 when he moved to DeKalb, IL, to be closer to his sister Pam, her husband Martin and their children.

Larry’s love of sports (especially the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns) was only outmatched by the love and dedication he had to his family. Larry was a loving son, a caring brother and an amazing uncle. Larry’s kindness and big heart provided nothing but wonderful memories to his family and friends. His sense of humor and love of life were a gift to all who knew him. Including his friends and colleagues at Wal-Mart, where he worked for 12 years. The love and beauty that Larry brought to the world will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who was lucky enough to meet him.

Larry is survived by his mother, Carol Jean Dunlap; sister, Pamela Hansen of Plano, IL; brothers, Denny Dunlap of Texas City, Texas, Joe Dunlap of Dover, Delaware, Rodney Rose of Newark, Ohio, and Tim Dunlap of Newark, Ohio.

He is preceded in death by his father, Elmer A. Dunlap Jr. Private burial and funeral services will be held graveside in Hanover, Ohio, for family members.

Born: Sept. 23, 1957; in Rochelle, IL Died: July 28, 2016; in Sycamore, IL Ricky D. Hurst Sr., 58, passed away surrounded by his loving family Thursday, July 28, 2016, in Sycamore, IL. Ricky was born Sept. 23, 1957, to Harry and Maggie (Harris) Hurst in Rochelle, IL. He married Debbie R. Rewerts. Ricky worked for Silgan for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, camping and Craig’s Listing.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Judy Finley; and niece, Stephanie Finley.

Margery J. Lyman (nee Weber) of DeKalb, Illinois, died on, Friday, July 29, 2016, at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center, at the age of 101½.

Beloved wife of the late Dean W. Lyman for 73½ years (married Oct. 24, 1936, in St. Louis, MO); loving mother of William D. (Ann) Lyman, Fripp Island, SC, Susan E. (Charles) Vitel, Wheaton, IL, and Kathryn J. (Gregory) Kelly, Coralville, IA. Cherished grandmother of 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, aunt and friend to many.

Born on Dec. 27, 1914, in Litchfield, IL, Margery had been a resident of DeKalb since 1957. She was a longtime active member of the DeKalb United Methodist Church. She was also involved in the DeKalb Woman’s Club, DeKalb Drama Club, P.E.O. and Ellwood House for many years. She enjoyed reading and traveling with Dean and worked for Dean at the Dean Lyman Insurance Agency.

Margery, who cherished her family greatly, was known as a gracious and grateful woman who believed in being nice and kind to everyone.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Lillian Weber; her husband, Dean (May 1, 2010); brother Maynard Weber; and sister Mary Ellen Todd.

Interment will be at Fairview Park Cemetery, South First Street in DeKalb. Memorial service to be held at the Oak Crest Retirement Center on Monday, Aug. 1, at 1:30 p.m.

DeKALB – After the School District 428 Board sent a letter critical of teacher contract negotiations to parents this week, the location for the board’s meeting Tuesday has been moved to a larger venue.

The school board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the DeKalb High School Auditorium at 501 W. Dresser Road in DeKalb.

Superintendent Doug Moeller said the meeting was moved after the board learned that district teachers, represented by union DeKalb Classroom Teachers Association, plan to show up in force.

“Nobody from the DeKalb teachers association has said anything to us, but people in the community have called and said, ‘Hey, there’s going to be a lot of teachers at the board meeting, and we heard that Sycamore teachers might show up,’ ” Moeller said.

He said the change of venue would better accommodate the anticipated

attendance. He added, however, that no request for additional security had been made as of Friday afternoon.

Moeller said he has “no idea” why teachers might be coming to the meeting. He said the agenda does not include discussion of collective bargaining.

He did say, however, that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if the school board letter sent to parents “motivated” teachers’ plans to be at the meeting.

The DCTA is distributing a flier rebutting the letter the school board sent.

The flier also urged teachers and supporters to attend the Aug. 2 and Aug. 28 school board meetings.

“The DCTA encourages all our citizens and taxpayers to get involved in the process of local government, and to attend Tuesday’s school board meeting to let their elected officials know where they stand,” union leaders said Friday in a written statement to the Daily Chronicle.

District parent Jennifer Taylor said she was appalled by the letter the school board sent to parents this week regarding ongoing contract negotiations with the teachers association. She said she planned to attend Tuesday’s meeting.

Land for proposed Irongate subdivision in DeKalb for sale

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – More than two years after the City Council approved development plans for what would have been the Irongate subdivision, the 458 acres of land is for sale.

Shodeen, a Geneva-based developer, owns the property and wrangled with city leaders and disapproving residents for an extended period to get approval in October 2013 to develop the land, which is adjacent to DeKalb High School on Dresser Road, and runs along nearby First Street and down Bethany Road.

“It doesn’t really surprise me,” said 1st Ward Alderman Dave Jacobson, whose ward includes the property. “I think it is indicative of the fact that, again, Shodeen has been in this community now for almost 10 years, and they’ve continually made promises and have not made good on any of those

promises.”

David Peltzelt, Shodeen’s president, did not return Daily Chronicle calls or emails seeking comment on the sale. The listing agents at commercial real-estate company C.B. Richard Ellis, which is the selling agent for the property, also did not immediately respond to phone calls.

The season’s crop of corn stands tall on the land right now. The city approved annexing the farmland and rezoning it so more than 1,000 housing units could be built on it. A CBRE listing indicated the land was being sold for $19,000 an acre, or a total of more than $9 million, as of Friday afternoon.

DeKalb officials said they can only speculate as to why, years later, instead of selling single-family houses, townhomes or senior units – as planned – Shodeen has decided to put the property up for sale.

Second Ward Alderman Bill Finucane said he just happened

to see the for-sale sign last weekend.

“It’s not a surprise to see a sign up there, with the start of the construction of the church, because that’s really the kickoff project,” said Finucane, who favored the development. “Now that some of the infrastructure is going to be in place, it would be easier for them to move forward.”

Finucane said the city already was aware that it would take decades to build the subdivision to approved capacity.

Voting in favor of annexing the land and giving a thumbsup to building the subdivision was one of the first issues presented to then-newly elected Mayor John Rey. But the mayor told the Daily Chronicle after the City Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting Monday that he was not aware the land was now for sale.

“Certainly to begin development of that subdivision would be helpful,” Rey said.

Gar a potential weapon in fight with Asian carp

CHICAGO – It’s a toothy giant that can grow longer than a horse and heavier than a refrigerator, a fearsome-looking prehistoric fish that plied U.S. waters from the Gulf of Mexico to Illinois until it disappeared from many states a half-century ago.

Persecuted by anglers and deprived of places to spawn, the alligator gar – with a head that resembles an alligator and two rows of needlelike teeth – survived primarily in Southern states in the tributaries of the Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico after being declared extinct in several states farther north. To many, it was a freak, a “trash fish” that threatened sportfish, something to be exterminated.

But the once-reviled predator is now being seen as a valuable fish in its own right, and as a potential weapon against a more threatening intruder: the invasive Asian carp, which have swum almost unchecked toward the Great Lakes, with little more than an electric barrier to keep them at bay.

CHICAGO – Chicago police have “quite a few questions” after officers fatally shot a man driving a stolen car, and investigators have retrieved body cameras and cameras on squad car dashboards to determine whether officers followed the department’s deadlyforce policy when they opened fire on the fleeing vehicle.

“At this moment the department has, unfortunately, more questions than we do answers,” department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Friday.

AbbVie beats Street second-quarter forecasts

NORTH CHICAGO – AbbVie Inc. on Friday reported second-quarter profit of $1.61 billion.

On a per-share basis, the North Chicago-based company said it had net income of 98 cents. Earnings, adjusted for costs related to mergers and acquisitions and amortization costs, were $1.26 per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.20 per share.

Cook County guard charged with punching jail inmate

CHICAGO – A Cook County correctional officer has been charged with felony misconduct after video surveillance cameras captured him allegedly punching a jail inmate.

In a news release, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office said 44-yearold Miguel Ortiz appeared in court Thursday, where a judge allowed him to be released from custody on his written promise to appear in court.

Ortiz was working the night of January 17, 2014, when an inmate being transferred from one wing of the jail to another started arguing with other officers.

Prosecutors allege that when the inmate fell to the ground as Ortiz tried to grab

But the extent to which gar could control carp now is not well understood, and some people are skeptical.

“I don’t think alligator gar are going to be the silver bullet that is going to control carp, by any stretch of the imagination,” said Rob Hilsabeck, an Illinois biologist who said the best hope is that carp will sustain an alligator gar fishery to draw trophy hunters.

Springfield police introduce body cameras

SPRINGFIELD – Eight Springfield police officers are now wearing body cameras.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reported the cameras were unveiled this week. They have high-definition video, a 142-degree field of view, work in low light, have Wi-Fi, a 12-hour battery and a magnet that keeps them affixed to the front of uniforms.

Police Chief Kenny Winslow said police studied the idea for two years. They tested several models, including one mounted on a pair of glasses.

The department will spend $137,000 this year and $127,000 annually for the cameras and operations.

Campaign spokesman Nick Merrill said the newly disclosed breach affected a Democratic National Committee data analytics program used by the campaign and other organizations.

Merrill said outside experts found no evidence that the campaign’s “internal systems have been compromised” but gave no detail on the program or nature of the attacks. President Barack Obama and cybersecurity experts have said Russia was almost certainly responsible for the DNC hack, and the House Democratic campaign committee reported Friday that its information had been accessed.

The developments came after the leaking of DNC emails earlier in the week that pointed to a pro-Clinton bias by party officials during her primary contest against Bernie Sanders.

“I’ve been saying let’s just beat her on Nov. 8,” he said, “but you know what? I’m starting to agree with you.”

speech and her first events afterward, her priority was to go after Trump, not ask for trust.

“We don’t resent success in America, but we do resent people who take advantage of others in order to line their own pockets,” said Clinton, addressing local officials and employees on the factory floor.

Trump also is focusing on Ohio and Pennsylvania, as states where he might make headway with blue-collar white men. That group of voters has eluded Clinton and was perhaps a hard sell after a Democratic convention that heavily celebrated racial and gender diversity.

Clinton is playing up economic opportunity, diversity and national security. Democrats hammered home those themes this week with an array of politicians, celebrities, gun-violence victims, law enforcement officers and activists of all races and sexual orientation.

PHILADELPHIA – Donald Trump’s flurry of offhand remarks and abrupt zingers on Russia – praising Vladimir Putin, dismissing NATO – have jolted the world, not to mention the U.S. presidential campaign.

With Russia’s behavior rattling nerves in the U.S. and abroad, the Republican presidential nominee is accused of cozying up to a “dictator.” Of threatening the very underpinnings of America’s relationship with Europe. And of naivete.

For all that, some of Trump’s goals are consistent with long-held U.S. views, many experts say. The idea of fostering U.S.-Russian cooperation isn’t outlandish – after all, Hillary Clinton tried to “reset” relations with Russia as secretary of state. And past U.S. administrations of both parties have quietly complained that other NATO mem-

Thumbs-up to city-NIU effort Thumbs-up: To the town-grown relations on display at Thursday’s State of the City event. Northern Illinois University President Doug Baker joined DeKalb Mayor John Rey and DeKalb City Manager Anne Marie Gaura to talk about what’s happened over the past year and what’s ahead for the next year. Baker used his address to highlight some of the ways the city and the university work together. He further noted the economic impact – in terms of jobs and spending – that the university has on DeKalb and the wider region. He also encouraged residents to visit a new website that showcases what’s happening at the university and an initiative to get more residents to take advantage of the cultural opportunities on campus. We applaud these efforts and hope to see more in the future.

Thumbs-down: To the recent spate of restaurant closings. Panda Express has closed its Lincoln Highway location and Ruby Tuesday was shuttered with little warning this week. While Panda Express still has two locations in the area, we don’t like seeing businesses and jobs leave. We hope to see new tax-generating retailers take over these spots soon.

Thumbs-up: To Gov. Bruce Rauner for signing House Bill 4715 into law. The law significantly increases fines that can be levied against local governments if they violate court orders or binding attorney general’s opinions that a Freedom of Information Act request that has been denied must be made public. The fine could be as high as $1,000 a day, and we applaud the law to encourage a more open and transparent government.

Thumbs-up: To American Legion Post 66 and the volunteers and businesses that are helping to give Donna, the tank in DeKalb’s Memorial Park, a fresh coat of paint this weekend. American Legion Post 66 Cmdr.

Dan Gallagher said it has been about 70 years since the vehicle was last painted.

Donna is an icon for many in DeKalb and an important part of Memorial Park. We appreciate the work of Post 66, Northern Illinois University’s veterans club and the businesses that made this possible.

Thumbs-up: To state Rep. David McSweeney’s legislation that should curtail extravagant expenses by government agencies. The new law signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner requires local governments to draft ordinances that define acceptable expenses and set maximum limits. Governments also must create a standardized form to document travel, meal and lodging expenses, and the forms can be obtained by the public under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.

Lessons from Dem chair’s departure

Debbie Wassermann Schultz had no choice but to resign as head of the Democratic National Committee on Sunday, given the distraction she’d become over leaked emails showing the DNC’s animus toward the unending campaign of Bernie Sanders and the chairwoman’s sense of entitlement.

Still, the release of these emails by the whistleblowing website Wikileaks is disturbing, and not simply because someone hacked the private accounts of a major American political party in a high-tech version of the Watergate break-in. It’s also disturbing because the website plans to dribble out the emails over time, keeping them in the news, stirring things up, demonstrating a “dirty tricks” political agenda.

If Wikileaks truly believed in telling people what it knows, when it knows it, it would have released the emails all at once. Instead, the first release is called “Part One of our new Hillary Leaks series.” Previously, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has promised to publish enough evidence to put Hillary Clinton in prison.

The Democrats claim Russian hackers are behind the email

breach, presumably because President Vladimir Putin prefers Republican nominee Donald Trump over Clinton. Even absent the suggestion that Russia is meddling in our presidential election, it is appropriate that the FBI investigate, as it said Monday that it would.

But for now, there is the truth revealed in the 19,000 emails released late Friday, which led Wasserman Schultz to resign as DNC chairwoman on the eve of the Democratic National Convention, which she helped put together.

The emails reveal that Wasserman Schultz, who lives in Weston, Florida, had a contemptuous attitude toward Sanders’ campaign manager, Jeff Weaver.

When Weaver said Sanders should continue his campaign to the convention, she wrote: “He is an ASS.” In another, she calls him a “damn liar” for how he characterized the protests and threats of violence around Nevada’s primary.

The emails also show Wasserman Schultz’s frustration with not getting enough on-air time on MSNBC. And she wanted something done about Mika Brzezinski, a co-host of “Morning Joe,” who suggested the chairwoman should

resign for having taken sides during the primary.

The emails also show a sense of entitlement, as when she sought a donor’s help securing seven tickets to the Broadway blockbuster, Hamilton. “Let me know if there is anyone I need to speak with directly,” she wrote.

That said, from what has been revealed so far, there’s no evidence Wasserman Schultz personally sought to undermine Sanders’ candidacy, although her team appeared to show favoritism.

One staffer suggested, for example, the party should “get someone to ask”’ Sanders about his faith because it could be used against him. “I think I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps.

My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist,” wrote Brad Marshall, the DNC’s chief financial officer.

Party leaders have no business picking favorites in primaries.

Rather, they should trust party voters to pick the candidates they believe will best represent them at the local, state and national levels.

At this point, further rate cuts or more bond-buying would only be on the margins of his actions thus far. And those haven’t gotten the BOJ very far.

By one key measure, the economy sunk deeper into deflation in June.

Earlier this month, the International Monetary Fund reduced its growth forecast for 2016 to an anemic 0.3 percent.

The fact is that BOJ can pump out as much cash as it wants, but unless companies and consumers use it to invest and spend, Kuroda’s “bazooka” can only fire blanks. The government simply hasn’t advanced the critical reforms – from deregulation to labor market repair – that would unleash new opportunities and convince investors to borrow, build and create.

Arguably, the case could be made that Japan would be much worse off without Kuroda’s experiments. But with so much largesse creating so little positive effect, we at least need to question if further easing could achieve that much more. In fact, greater action could have a damaging effect, by further straining banks and punishing savers. And those concerns are only going to grow over time. Kuroda may

need to pretend he has unlimited room to maneuver in order not to spook markets. But he’s running a high risk of underwhelming them again, given the very real constraints on action.

There are uncomfortable lessons here for other central bankers. Mario Draghi, president of the European Central Bank, is, like Kuroda, under constant pressure to take more drastic steps to stoke inflation and growth.

But Kuroda’s experience should act as a warning that his bank may eventually hit a ceiling as well. In China, where policymakers are easing money to spur growth, the BOJ’s traumas are clear proof that expanding cash without implementing true structural reforms only goes so far.

Kuroda’s only hope may be to tinker further with his unorthodox policies and take even more radical decisions – such as lending to banks at negative rates. Perhaps Japan will continue to be a laboratory of economic innovation. The results, though, are likely to be sobering.

‘Clinton Cash’ raises questions about speaking fees This week, as Democrats fawn over Hillary Clinton, I’m struck by how both Clintons continue to thrive despite their remarkable record of sleazy dealings.

The just released documentary “Clinton Cash,” based on a book by Peter Schweizer, tells how they make big money by selling access to themselves.

In a conversation, Schweizer told me how the Clintons use “speaking fees” to get around bribery laws.

“If somebody gave a politician or family member money for a favor, that’s breaking the law. But if you say it’s a speaking fee, and you pay double or triple the normal rate, that seems to be legal.”

Since Bill Clinton left office, he’s earned more than $126 million giving speeches. Nothing wrong with that.

Bill likes to talk, and if people want to pay big bucks to hear him or just to say they were near him, so be it. It’s their own money.

But what suggests influence peddling, said Schweizer, is that before Hillary became secretary of state, Bill’s usual fee was less than $200,000.

After she became secretary of state, he made as much as $750,000 a speech.

That’s “evidence that people paying him expect to get something in

Those are just two of many examples cited in “Clinton Cash.”

Sometimes the Clintons launder the money through the Clinton Foundation. It’s collected more than $2 billion to “improve global health and wellness.”

But Sean Davis of The Federalist examined Clinton Foundation records and concluded only about 15 percent of the money goes to actual charity work to help people in need.

Most is spent paying Clinton cronies and other well-connected people to schmooze with governments and charities, which supposedly helps those governments and charities help people. I doubt it helps much.

came a moneymaking opportunity for the Clintons.

After the earthquake, the Clinton Foundation announced that it would work with governments and businesses to help rebuild Haiti. Actual rebuilding has been meager.

A Clinton Foundation news release promised an industrial park that would create “up to 60,000 jobs.” Just 7,000 jobs have been created.

What the foundation has managed to do is help Clinton “friends.” One, Irish billionaire Denis O’Brien, runs Digicel, a firm that wanted a grant to build Haiti’s cellphone network.

“Four weeks after their application,” said Schweizer, Digicel sponsored a speech for Bill Clinton in Jamaica and “paid him $225,000. Within four months of that speech, Digicel would receive the first installment of that grant money.”

Hillary Clinton’s brother, Tony Rodham, even managed to cash in. The Haitian government awarded an exclusive gold mining contract to a firm called VCS mining. VCS, said Schweizer, “has no experience in mining, very little experience in Haiti, and it raises the question, of all the companies out there, why did the Haitian government pick this one company?”

The Clintons will tell you that it had nothing to do with the facts that Hillary’s brother got a job with VCS and the chairman happens to be a Democratic donor.

The worst example in “Clinton Cash,” said Schweizer, is the Ericsson telecom deal. The Swedish company Ericsson was in trouble with the State Department because it sold telecom equipment to repressive regimes.

Said Schweizer, “WikiLeaks cables show the State Department sort of busting up the Swedish foreign minister, saying you need to get Ericsson into line. Ericsson decides that this would be a great time to sponsor a speech by Bill Clinton. They had never done so before. They decided to go big, $750,000 for a 20-minute speech.

Bill gives the speech and literally seven days later, the State Department comes out with a statement saying we’re not going to take further action against Ericsson. We’re going to ask them to police themselves.”

I hope “Clinton Cash” gets the attention it deserves.

For the past 70 years, Japan has been a crucible of experimentation in economic policy. During its go-go years, Tokyo’s unusual practices to spur rapid growth became a model for much of the rest of Asia, while its unconventional attempts to revive its post-bubble economy have helped economists understand what should and could be done to recover from financial crises.

Now Japan may be offering the world yet another lesson in economics – on the outer limits and ultimate effectiveness of monetary policy itself.

Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda disappointed investors on Friday when he offered only a minor boost in his asset-buying program as his latest effort to beat deflation and raise growth. With talk of “helicopter money” and other exotic strategies, many had convinced themselves that the BOJ would try to surprise markets with a much more dramatic decision.

Voices immediately called for greater action. “We still expect the Bank to do more,” wrote economist Marcel

Thieliant of Capital Economics in a Friday note.

In his press conference, Kuroda insisted that he wasn’t done yet – there were more bonds to buy, more rate cuts to try. But the truth is, at this stage, three years into his radical program to restart Japan, the BOJ might just be a spent force. As HSBC economist Frederic Neumann put it in a Friday report: “Today’s decision suggests that the BOJ has reached the limits of its current policy framework.”

Kuroda has already thrown everything into his fight to save Japan. Through his extensive program of quantitative easing, his bank now holds a third of all outstanding government bonds, and some experts believe there are limits to his ability to buy more and more of them. Yields on many of these bonds are already negative, which means the investors who are lending their money to the government are paying for the privilege. The total assets of the BOJ have more than doubled in the just the past three years.

Even if Kuroda could expand the easing program, there’s little reason to think it will make a big difference.

DETROIT – The question comes relentlessly at Northern Illinois quarterback Drew Hare as would an opposing defensive end.

Yes, his Achilles is feeling just fine.

“I do get the question about 2-3 times a day, but it’s OK,” Hare said Thursday at the Mid-American Conference Media Day. “People care and I’m glad people care. I’m glad that it feels good.”

After solidifying his hold on the Huskies’ starting quarterback spot with a strong sophomore season, Hare spent the past offseason recovering from surgery for a ruptured Achilles he suffered last season at Toledo.

The injury bug hit Huskies quarterbacks last season – to the point where walk-on, fifth-string quarterback Tommy Fiedler started the MAC Championship game against Bowling Green – and while Hare ended the season in a cast, it allowed him to focus on the mental side of the game this offseason.

“This offseason, obviously, a lot of it was recovering,” Hare said. “After that was trying to go deeper into the game and learn a few more things about the game that I maybe wouldn’t have learned. I already knew the whole offense, but knowing the tinier details and the more interesting intricacies of our offense, I think I picked up.”

Hare played in nine of 2015’s 14 games, throwing for 1,962 yards and 14 touchdowns with only four interceptions.

He had a relatively up-and-down season, struggling in three straight losses early in the season that were capped by a fumble-plagued loss at Central Michigan before responding with a record-setting 29-for-32 performance with 363 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Ball State.

The game before the injury at Toledo, he threw for 267 yards and four touchdowns in an easy win over Eastern Michigan.

MINNEAPOLIS – Pinch-hitter Joe Mauer drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 2-1 win over the White Sox on Friday night.

Dan Jennings (4-3) hit Eddie Rosario with a full-count pitch to lead off the 12th. One out later Byron Buxton walked. Reliever Tommy Kahnle then came on and walked Brian Dozier and Mauer to push across the winning run.

Adam Eaton put the Sox on the board early when he led off the game with a long home run to right-center field. After that, however, only one Sox runner reached second base against Ricky Nolasco.

However, Miguel Sano, who had doubled, ran through a stop sign at third base and Eaton’s throw easily beat him to the plate.

Sox starter Jose Quintana allowed one run on seven hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. Buxton’s two-out double in the seventh inning ended his night after 112 pitches, but Matt Albers came on to retire Dozier and strand Buxton.

Yet in the midst of all the offense, it may have been Heyward’s 1-for-4 afternoon that attracted the most praise.

“The guy just works so hard,” right fielder Ben Zobrist said. “He’s had so much bad luck this year ... so when you see him hit a ball like that into the wind, you’re just so happy that finally one went over the fence that he hit well.”

The Cubs’ offensive explosion was more than enough for Lester, who allowed only four hits and struck out seven and walked only two over six innings. Lester (11-4) twice struck out the side, including in the first inning when he gave up a leadoff single and yielded a walk that gave the Mariners runners

on first and second with only one out.

But Lester struck out Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager to end the threat before being given some breathing room by a three-run third inning when Chris Coghlan delivered a two-run single and Kris Bryant added an RBI single.

Justin Grimm and Mike Montgomery finished off the win – which was delayed by a 74-minute rain delay in the middle of the seventh inning. But despite Mother Nature’s best efforts, nothing could drown out the Cubs’ offense.

“I try to always tell them, ‘12 runs and air-tight defense usually makes a pitcher’s job a lot easier,’ ” Lester joked.

“So that was good today and they delivered on that. So that was big.”

Justin Morneau was a visiting player for the first time in the city he called home for a decade. The Twins traded their former first baseman and 2006 AL MVP late in the 2013 season.

After stints with Pittsburgh and Colorado, Morneau signed with the Sox in June.

I think I came back maybe not better physically – this is me, I think he’s better physically than he was last year – but me, I was smarter and more in tune to the game and more determined because of that 10,000-foot view that I had. It made me hungry to get back down in there. I think that has definitely happened with Drew.”

Hare is emphatic that while he had to take it easy early in the summer, he’s feeling 100 percent and going full speed after having surgery Nov. 5 –

two days after being injured at Toledo.

“They said the way the surgery went and the way recovery went, it’s probably stronger than it was before, so there’s really no precautions – just don’t do it again,” Hare said. “It was just a freak injury, so there’s nothing to look out for.”

At media day Thursday, Carey laughed about the absurdity of the Huskies losing their top four quarterbacks at one point in the season – Hare, Anthony Maddie (back surgery),

Ryan Graham (knee) and Daniel Santacaterina (elbow). During the spring season, Hare was out with the team, but was limited to throwing drills.

When it came to full-contact team drills, Hare went back to the sidelines.

“I didn’t let him go a lot,” Carey said of the cautious approach. “I was born at night, I wasn’t born last night.

I wasn’t going to do that. I probably was a little more conservative than the doctors might have been and that’s OK.”

Jon Lester can speak from experience when it comes to the expectations that come with a big contract.

So if anyone can relate to the struggles Jason Heyward has endured after signing an eight-year, $184 million contract and then becoming bombarded with outside scrutiny in a year when he hasn’t produced offensively, it’s Lester, who signed a six-year, $155 million deal only to finish his first year with the Cubs with an 11-12 record.

And as much as the Cubs preach that they are a band of brothers who unconditionally have each other’s backs, Lester may have been at the front of the reception line after Heyward delivered a two-run homer in the Cubs’ 12-1 win over the Mariners on Friday at Wrigley Field.

“This year has been tough on him I’m sure,” Lester said. “I’m sure people check the box score – they don’t watch the game – but he’s squared a lot of balls for us this year and he hasn’t had a lot to show for it.

“I know that’s hard because this game is built around results.”

Manager Joe Maddon points to Heyward’s bad luck and the number of hard hit balls that have either been hit directly at someone or were impacted by Wrigley’s unpredictable winds. But on Friday, Heyward’s two-run shot into the right field bleachers was hit into the teeth of the wind, unaffected by any string of bad luck that may have previously cursed Heyward.

The homer – Heyward’s fifth of the year and his first since June 11 – was one of 14 Cubs’ hits and came before the Cubs broke the game open with a sixrun sixth inning.

Cutler now one of Bears’ clear-cut leaders BOURBONNAIS – So here we are on Day 3 in Bourbonnais with the Bears, two practices under our belts, the pads going on and the leashes coming off Saturday, and I’m trying to figure out exactly what alternate universe I’ve landed in?

How did I miss it when Jay Cutler became the accepted and unquestioned quarterback and leader of the Bears?

When Ryan Pace and John Fox arrived in Chicago 18 months ago, it appeared the new regime would release the veteran signal-caller and get out from underneath the remaining “guaranteed” dollars in what was believed to be the ludicrous contract given to him after the 2013 season by Phil Emery.

After three separate meetings with the media over the past 48 hours, Fox hasn’t been asked a single question about Cutler’s future, how he feels about him at quarterback, whether he can be trusted to protect the football or how he feels about going into the season with him.

Even more startling – I’ve hosted close to 100 hours of sports talk radio on 670 the SCORE since the end of the season and I can count on one hand the calls I’ve had to complain

Chicago loves Jay? No. But has “Bears Nation” suddenly accepted the former lightning rod of the franchise?

How did it happen?

Cutler is a career 86.0-rated passer who’s averaged 3,140 yards passing, 20.4 touchdowns, 14.1 interceptions, 62.0 completion percentage and 7.21 yards per pass with 162 yards per season rushing.

In 2015 he was 92.3, 3,659 yards, 21 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 64.4 percent completion rate, 7.58 yards per pass and 201 rushing yards.

Cutler was better in every category last year, but he was also the NFL’s 16th-rated quarterback in efficiency, 17th in touchdowns and 19th in yards.

Yes, he definitely took better care of the ball last year, but, perhaps most interestingly, the Bears were

21st in total offense,15th in passing and 23rd in points scored under Marc Trestman, and still only 21st, 23rd, and 23rd in those categories last season respectively.

Those numbers got Marc Trestman fired, got Gase promoted to an NFL head-coaching job and made Cutler the man after years of being public enemy No. 1.

Cutler had an interesting take on the situation the first day of camp.

“I was looking at the roster a couple of weeks ago, and I feel like there’s been a major shift in experience – especially on the offensive side. I’m at 11 [years experience] and then you look down, there’s a couple of nines, a couple of eights and mostly five and under, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

“I think new talent and new guys in the building, there’s new energy and new attitude. I’ve embraced it.

I’ve enjoyed it.”

Cool. But why are we more comfortable with you Jay? “I am 10 years, 11 years older than some of these guys, you know,” he said. “Kyle (Long) has his computer setup. People watch him play video games, which blows my mind that people just tune in to see someone

play video games.

“It’s definitely different. But you’ve got to embrace it. You kind of have to step into that world with those guys and know what they’re talking about just to be able to relate to them, because you are going to need them out there on the field, they need me.”

That is not the same guy who was shoving his offensive linemen around on the sidelines and flipping off Mike Martz just a few years ago.

The biggest difference in Jay is that somewhere along his pothole-filled road to our hearts, along with $56 million guaranteed dollars, Cutler has grown up.

Will he ever win Mr. Congeniality?

Definitely not, and there are no guarantees he’ll never again kick a teammate in the butt or drop a few F-bombs.

But has he matured into a quarterback you can win with and short of that, at least live with?

That just may be so.

Jones-Quartey’s physical play big plus in safety competition

fishbain@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS – In the Bears’ final practice without pads, there was a big hit. Well, as much of a collision as one will see without pads.

Safety Harold Jones-Quartey shot his gap and met running back Jeremy Langford in the backfield. The second-year safety out of Division III Findlay College was fired up after making the run stop, and it’s that physicality and active play that has given Jones-Quartey the first shot to win the starting safety job opposite Adrian Amos.

“That’s my personality,” Jones-Quartey said about the way he plays. “You guys know my background and that all comes with it, and I want this job more than I want anything. So I’m going to go out there and be myself and try to help this team and make plays.”

Since the start of OTAs, Jones-Quartey has been running with the first team.

During the offseason, Jones-Quartey got his weight from 220 pounds to 205 so he “could cover better, and get in and out of

my breaks and not just be able to cover tight ends. Hopefully, I can cover slots, and things like that, so I’m moving better out there.”

Jones-Quartey showed off a knack for playing the ball in the team’s Week 16 win over Tampa Bay, when he had two passes defensed, an interception and a forced fumble. He regained his starting job that game after playing only special teams from Weeks 11 through 15 – he did start in Weeks 5 and 6.

“The Tampa game was definitely huge,” he said. “I’ve been busting my butt the whole year, and I finally got an opportunity and made some plays in Tampa. That helped me a lot.”

There’s certainly still a competition at safety, with rookie Deon Bush and veteran Chris Prosinski trying to make positive impressions, but Jones-Quartey is in good position. He knows there’s more work to do, but he also wants to confirm the coaches’ belief in him.

“It shows that the coaches have a lot of faith in me, and a lot of trust, and they feel comfortable with me being out there with the 1s,” he said.

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. –Robert Streb became the latest player to shoot 63 in a major, and hardly anyone noticed in a PGA Championship with endless action across Baltusrol on Friday.

Streb was on the far end of the rainsoaked course when he holed a 20-foot birdie putt on his last hole, the par-3 ninth, to become the 28th player with a 63 in a major. It was the fourth 63 at Baltusrol, following Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf in the opening round of the 1980 U.S. Open and Thomas Bjorn in the third round at 2005 PGA. It gave Streb a share of the lead with Jimmy Walker (66), and they tied the 36hole record at the PGA Championship at 131.

Most of the crowd was at the par-5 closing holes at Baltusrol, and there was no shortage of entertainment.

Defending champion Jason Day went on a tear after taking a double bogey on No. 7 by making seven birdies over his next eight holes and having a chance at 63. He needed birdies on the final two holes, but instead drove left next to the hospitality tents, and then hit an iron into right rough off the tee at No. 18. He had to settle for two pars and a 65.

Even so, the world’s No. 1 player was in solid shape to try to join Tiger Woods as the only back-to-back PGA champions in the stroke-play era. Day was at 7-under 133 with Emiliano Grillo, who sent the tone for an afternoon of birdies on his way to a 67.

By the end of the day, it was easy to overlook a familiar figure – Henrik Stenson, the British Open champion who made eagle on the 18th at the turn and polished off another 67. He was only four shots behind in his bid to match Ben Hogan as the only players to win two straight majors at age 40.

Phil Mickelson made the cut, and that might have been the most entertaining of all.

He began his round with a tee shot so far left that it sailed off the property, bounced along Shunpike Road and caromed to the left down Baltusrol Way. Wherever it finished, it was out-ofbounds, and Mickelson had to scramble for a triple bogey. He spent the rest of the day battling to get back, and he delivered on the 18th with a birdie to post a 70.

A dozen players were separated by five shots going into the weekend, a group that included Martin Kaymer and Patrick Reed, and even Rickie Fowler, who salvaged his round with a birdie-eagle finish.

Long-term use of SSRIS safe Dear Dr. K: I’m nearing 60, and I’ve been on SSRI medicines for nearly 30 years, for depression. They work for me, but should I be worried about side effects from using them for so long?

Dear Reader: You’ve asked an important question – one that should be asked of any medicine used for many months or years.

All medicines can have side effects, and SSRIs are no exception. And some medicines can have side effects that become apparent only after long-term use.

Fortunately, SSRIs have been used by so many people, for so long, we can say that they do more good than harm.

SSRIs (the full name is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) were created to treat depression. They also have been a first-choice treatment for anxiety disorders since the 1990s. Popular SSRIs include escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil) and sertraline (Zoloft).

SSRIs target the natural brain chemical called serotonin, a neurotransmitter that affects anxiety and mood. A neurotransmitter is a chemical that travels from one nerve cell to another. Basically, neurotransmitters are the way nerve cells talk to each other.

Between one nerve cell and another there is a small space. One cell releases a neurotransmitter into that space; it travels like a boat across a pond and locks onto a structure on the other cell. The structure is called a receptor. When serotonin released by one cell travels to another cell and locks onto its receptor, one cell has “talked” to another.

SSRIs cause more serotonin signals to travel from one brain cell to another. As a result, SSRIs amplify the beneficial effects of serotonin on mood and anxiety.

SSRIs can have dangerous interactions with some other medicines. The most important is an increased risk of bleeding in people who also are using blood-thinning medicines. Blood thinners include aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and warfarin.

Very rarely, people taking SSRIs can develop a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. The symptoms include fever, rapid heartbeat, dilated pupils, agitation, confusion and even coma. I’ve never seen this rare but serious side effect.

Finally, the Food and Drug Administration warns that in children, teens and young adults, SSRIs may increase thoughts of suicide and suicidal attempts.

But if you’ve already been taking an SSRI for many years and have not had such thoughts, then you probably are at no higher risk of having them in the future.

SSRIs do not relieve depression in everyone, so you are fortunate they work for you. And you also are fortunate they haven’t caused side effects. The fact you’ve been taking them for nearly 30 years is no reason to consider stopping them.

He could throw the club four, but it is better to signal with a high, encouraging card in the suit he would like partner to lead.

If West shifts to a diamond at trick four, the contract fails. If, though, he leads a club, declarer loses that trick, but gets his diamond loser away on the dummy’s club king.
