Clinton promises steady hand in dangerous world

PHILADELPHIA – Promising Americans a steady hand, Hillary Clinton cast herself Thursday night as a unifier for divided times, an experienced leader steeled for a volatile world.

She aggressively challenged Republican Donald Trump’s ability to do the same.

“Imagine him in the Oval Office facing a real crisis,” Clinton said as she accepted the Democratic nomination for president. “A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons.”

Clinton took the stage to roaring applause from flag-waving delegates on the final night of the Democratic convention, relishing her nomination as the first woman to lead a major U.S. political party. But her real audience was the millions of voters watching at home, many of whom may welcome her experience as secretary of state, senator and first lady, but question her character.

She acknowledged those concerns briefly, saying “I get it that some people just don’t know what to make of me.” But her primary focus was persuading Americans to not be seduced by Trump’s vague promises to restore economic

security and fend off threats from abroad.

Clinton’s four-day convention began with efforts to shore up liberals who backed Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary and it ended with an outstretched hand to Republicans and independents unnerved by Trump. A parade of military leaders, law enforcement officials and Republicans took the stage ahead of Clinton to endorse her in the general election contest with Trump.

“This is the moment, this is the opportunity for our future,” said retired Marine Gen. John R. Allen, a former commander in Afghanistan.

“We must seize this moment to elect Hillary Clinton as president of the United States of America.”

American flags waved in the stands of the packed convention hall. There were persistent but scattered calls of “No more war,” but the crowd drowned them out with chants of “Hill-ary” and “U-S-A!” The Democratic nomination now officially hers, Clinton has just more than three months to persuade Americans that Trump is unfit for the Oval Office and overcome the visceral connection he has with some voters in a way the Democratic nominee does not.

DeKalb leaders tout development, volunteerism at State of City event

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Crime is down in DeKalb, the city’s reserve fund continues to grow and business is still developing – and redeveloping – here, city officials said Thursday at the annual State of the City breakfast.

Matt Duffy, head of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the event, said it is an annual report, of sorts, that takes a look back over the previous fiscal year and offers a review of how things went for the city and Northern Illinois University.

NIU’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. That is changing for DeKalb, as the city is switching the July though June fiscal year to a Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 fiscal year starting in 2017.

“It’s a chance to give a status update. A lot of times you only hear about what’s at [City] Council [meetings] or what’s in certain forms of media,” Duffy said. “This is a chance to hear direct reports from the leaders of the community.”

Mayor John Rey, City Manager Anne Marie Gaura and NIU President Doug Baker addressed the crowd, which included chamber members, city employees, elected officials and NIU staff.

Rey and Gaura signaled that businesses continued to break ground, and partnerships were either newly created or continued to forge ahead. Among the economic development highlights touted were the 3M consolidation and expansion project and big-box retailer Target’s decision to turn its Macon Street facility into an upstream distribution center.

With that, the Minneapolis-based retailer added new equipment and product lines to get products to customers faster. It also resulted in a sizable hiring opportunity. Gaura said that of the 450 people Target was looking to hire at the facility, 300 have been put on the payroll.

“One of the biggest developments in the city has been the 3M project,” Gaura said. “The 987,000-square-foot 3M building was one of the year’s major retention and expansion efforts.”

It was a $40 million investment that called for the city being able to fast track the construction process to allow it to be completed in one year. The city competed with Atlanta for the project, and having 3M do the expansion here

Gaura said 3M will take occupancy of the building Monday, adhering to the timeline. She added that the cooperation between the city and that business was a indicator to others that the city “will work with you.”

Several other projects mentioned at last year’s meeting as getting underway or planned were announced as completed Thursday. Those included the completion in January of the new public library building and the May sale of University Village to Security Properties.

Small business also saw bright spots, city leaders pointed out.

Brian Bemis Toyota was one of the first to take advantage of the enterprise zone incentives available in DeKalb.

Those are made possible from the special economic development designation that the county received from the state. The enterprise zone was awarded last summer, but took effect Jan. 1.

His address centered mostly on his plans to increase volunteerism in DeKalb this year. The mayor said he

would be restructuring the current Economic Development Commission and looking to fill a vacancy on the Human Relations Commission.

Senior Fair highlights local services

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Annette Derra is new to the area, so the Genoa resident wanted to come to the 13th annual Senior Fair, sponsored by state Rep. Bob Pritchard and state Sen. Dave Syverson along with the Voluntary Action Center and Family Service Agency, to learn about all the services that are available to seniors in DeKalb County.

“I wanted to get established with doctors and see the activities for seniors,” she said. “This has been so beneficial and I’m very glad I came. I got a lot out of this fair. I found a podiatrist that I’m going to check out.”

DeKalb High School hosted the Thursday event, which brought together local organizations and businesses that serve seniors. Vendors included representatives from various medical providers, legal services, local libraries and the Kishwaukee YMCA, among many others.

More than 350 people attended the event, which Pritchard has been sponsoring since he came into office. He believes it’s a great opportunity to bring public and private service providers to the community, so seniors can get important information.

“There’s real value to this because providers share information and people can ask questions,” he said. “We have screenings and often people find out that they might have a condition, so this can help identify issues they might not have known about.”

Amy Shanks, community analyst for Pritchard, said the fair gets bigger and more popular every year.

“There are so many great services for seniors that they don’t know about,” she said. “Bob has a big district so this

This was Connie Rader’s first time attending the fair. The Sycamore resident said she didn’t know about a lot of the services that are available.

“I like to know about health benefits and issues, so this was very informative,” she said. “I met a wellness doctor today, and I’ve always wanted to see one to learn about more natural medications.”

Carolyn Camp of Malta, a retired nurse, said she enjoyed seeing all the new services because a lot has changed since she left the field.

“I knew a lot about some of these places, but they’ve added more providers,” she said. “There are a lot more services available to seniors now. And it’s

easy to compare providers here. Everyone’s been very helpful and I got some good advice.”

Barb Schlomann, vision rehabilitation therapist at the Center for Sight and Hearing, was informing seniors about new products that are available to help those with low vision. She said a lot of people had been very interested in her information.

“Our goal is to keep them independent for as long as possible,” she said.

“We go to people’s homes and help them label appliances and things like that, and just talk about the resources that could be beneficial to them.”

Jeni Hardin, community outreach and volunteer coordinator at Unity Hospice, said she had been able to make a lot of connections with people at the

fair. She said this fair is one of her favorite events to participate in.

“We want to educate people about hospice,” she said. “People are usually very appreciative of what we do and they always have a story to tell us.

We’re happy to get our name out to the community.”

Anaris Danak, a staff attorney at Prairie State Legal Services, said there are many legal situations that are unique to seniors, and she thinks it’s important they are aware Prairie State’s services are free to them.

“Many things can affect their lives when they need legal advice. For example, if they’re denied public benefits, we can help appeal those denials,” Danak said. “We also offer guardianship assistance, power of attorney and document preparation.”

The DeKalb County Veterans Assistance Commission also was at the fair.

Linda Drake, veterans service officer, was hoping to not only make veterans aware of their services, but also recruit drivers to help take veterans to doctor’s appointments at veterans hospitals.

“It’s a good idea to be here, because we can give veterans information about health care, filing claims and disability forms,” she said. “We also have a mobile medical unit that comes to DeKalb, and we offer counseling. I don’t know where else they would get this information.”

Pritchard said that while the fair offers seniors a lot of important information, it’s also a fun event where they can socialize and meet other seniors.

“This is a continuation of my philosophy that state representatives should be helping people and sharing information,” he said. “It’s a good community service and anytime we can bring providers and people together, it’s a winwin.”

DeKalb County jobless rate down from last June DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – DeKalb County’s unemployment rate stood at 5.2 percent last month, down from 5.5 percent in June 2015, according to preliminary figures released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The jobless rate in the city of DeKalb was 5.7 percent in June, down from 6 percent in June 2015. The unemployment rate identifies those who are out

of work and looking for work. It is not tied to collecting unemployment insurance benefits.

Statewide, eight of Illinois’ 14 metro areas saw decreases in over-the-year unemployment rate, according to a news release from IDES. “One metropolitan area losing jobs is one too many,” IDES Director Jeff Mays said in a statement. “While we boost our efforts to help employers connect with qualified candidates, we also need effective policies in place to realize robust job growth in Illinois.”

Illinois businesses added jobs in eight metro areas, in which the largest increases were seen in: Lake-Kenosha (+2.4 percent, +10,000), Rockford (+2.0 percent, +3,100), and Springfield (+1.8 percent, +2,000). Total nonfarm jobs in the Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights Metro Division increased (+1.2 percent or +43,700).

Illinois businesses lost jobs in six metro areas including the Quad Cities (-2.9 percent, -5,500), Bloomington (-1.6 percent, -1,500) and Peoria (-1.3 percent, -2,400). The industry sectors recording

job growth in the majority of metro areas were: education and health Services (11 of 14), leisure and hospitality (11 of 14), retail trade (10 of 14), and professional and business services (nine of 14).

Statewide, the unemployment rate was 6 percent in June and stood at 12.2 percent at its peak in this economic cycle in January 2010, according to IDES. Nationally, the unemployment rate was 5.1 percent last month and 10.6 percent in January 2010 at its peak.

Firm hired for park district project

Plan to build recreation campus moves forward

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Park District’s plan to build a new recreation campus is well on its way, now that the Park District Board of Commissioners has picked a construction management company.

Commissioners signed the contract with Ringland-Johnson Construction at a Sycamore Park District meeting this week. Throughout the next few months, Ringland-Johnson will work with architecture and engineering firm The Farnsworth Group to put the project out to bid early next year, according to a news release.

“This is a big and diverse project.

Our goal now is to find the best fit between contractors and the unique elements of the recreation campus’ facilities,” Park District Executive Director Dan Gibble said.

The new campus will include a community center, splash pad, dog park and sled hill.

Eight construction companies submitted bids to work on the project, and the district’s professional services committee chose three for interviews, according to a news release. But Ringland-Johnson’s contemporary ap-

proach means taxpayer dollars will be spent efficiently, commissioner Bill Kroeger said.

“Virtual models of the construction details allow for all planning and problem-solving to be done before the shov-

els are even in the ground,” he said.

“This reduces the likelihood of major change orders and costly construction errors.”

The construction company has worked on other projects in the area, including the Sycamore Public Safety Building, District 427 field house, Nestlé, St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church and Oak Crest Retirement Center.

The recreation campus will be located on 25 acres across Airport Road from the existing sports complex.

The Action 2020 plans will cost about $13 million. Voters approved a property tax referendum in November 2014 that will allow the park district to borrow about $9 million. Officials also have identified $3 million in potential grant funding. The Leaf a Legacy campaign’s goal is to raise the final $1 million from community donors.

An anonymous donor has pledged up to $300,000 to match all donations and commitments made this year by 50 percent. The project received a $25,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Sycamore in May.

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Police hope an outfit worn by an armed bank robber on one of the hottest days of the year will jog the memories of potential witnesses.

A man entered the Fifth Third Bank at 2707 Sycamore Road in DeKalb armed with a gun about 4 p.m. July 22.

On a day when the heat index reached nearly 100 degrees, the man wore a red hat on top of a wolf mask, blue jeans and a blue long-sleeve shirt, DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said. Judging by photos from the incident, it appears the suspect might have been wearing additional padding beneath the long-sleeve shirt.

“In that area, which is a lot of residential, the way he was running – he was wearing jeans and a long shirt. He would have stood out. It was so hot out that day,” Redel said.

The man was black, more than 6 feet tall, and possibly taller than 6 feet 2 inches, Redel said. He wore a dark-colored shirt and light-blue

Authorities are asking anyone who

recognizes the mask to contact the DeKalb Police Department or DeKalb County CrimeStoppers.

At least two witnesses said the man was inside the bank with them and ran past them as he exited the bank.

Witnesses told police the man displayed a black handgun, according to a Northern Illinois University Safety Bulletin.

It is unclear if the suspect lived in the area or if he could be connected to other robberies.

Illinois seeking private manager for lottery

CHICAGO – Aiming to avoid past troubles, Gov. Bruce Rauner announced Thursday that the state is seeking bids for a new private manager to run the Illinois Lottery after moving to terminate Northstar Lottery Group’s contract last year.

State officials released a request for proposal on a new 10-year, $300 million contract with revamped terms geared at a wider swath of companies.

Under former Gov. Pat Quinn, Illinois became the first state to privatize management and marketing of its roughly $2 billion-a-year lottery games when it awarded a 2010 contract to Northstar. The Chicago-based group did initially report record sales, but fell far short of its goals and was criticized for its performance and marketing.

Quinn first took steps to fire Northstar in 2014, but Rauner’s administration renegotiated the termination agreement the following year, a move they said im-

Lottery officials said it took nearly a year to start the search for a new manager because of complexities in crafting the contract. New terms include a push to expand technology, paying up front licensing fees, complying with the Freedom of Information Act and not allowing the private manager to act as both a manager and supplier. Northstar won’t be able to bid, under the termination agreement.

Lottery proceeds go to public schools and capital projects. Privatization, with the state retaining ownership and regulatory oversight, was pushed by

state legislators as a way to help boost revenues. However, the 2010 selection process for a 10-year contract raised questions about transparency. Northstar was made up of two lottery vendors running machines and instant tickets.

Rauner said it would take around six months to hire a new manager following the process set in state law. But he said if a suitable replacement can’t be found through bids, he’d consider trying to change the management model.

The Republican floated the potential of a “public benefit corporation” similar to how some states, including Georgia and Tennessee, run lotteries.

Any changes would require approval from the Democrat-controlled Legislature.

Debt collectors could face new regulations

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Consumers could no longer receive multiple calls a day from debt collectors and would have more ability to dispute their bills under proposals released Thursday to overhaul the multibillion-dollar debt collection industry.

The new rules from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau would also require collectors to have more documentation to prove a debt is owed, and initiate a 30-day waiting period for loans tied to someone who has recently died – halting all collection attempts from a spouse or child during that time.

Regulators estimate roughly 70 million Americans are contacted by debt collectors each year, and more Americans submit complaints to state and federal agencies about unfair or deceptive practices than any other part of the consumer financial system. These would be the biggest changes to the industry since Congress passed the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act nearly 40 years ago.

“This is about bringing better accuracy and accountability to a market that desperately needs it,” said CFPB Director Richard Cordray.

The changes, likely to face strong resistance from the industry and its allies in Washington, would affect only third-party debt collectors.

The agency has yet to propose rules that would

affect first-party debt collection practices, such as credit card companies and payday lenders.

Third-party collectors typically buy large databases of past-due loans and credit cards for pennies on the dollar, but those files can include loans discharged in bankruptcy or some too old to legally collect. Under the new rules, they would first have to more substantially show a debt is valid before starting collection.

Collectors would also have to provide clearer and easier ways for someone to dispute the debt. That would include a proposed “tear off” portion of a collection notice where someone can specify why the amount is wrong or why the debt is invalid, or allowing consumers to start disputing the debt over the phone. Right now, most disputes must be handled in writing.

If a consumer disputes a debt, collectors would be required to pause until they collect enough evidence to substantiate it. If the debt is sold, the new collector would inherit the dispute and would still have to provide validation, the CFPB says. This would solve a major source of complaints by consumers that collectors can harass them over debts that are in dispute already.

Once a debt is proven valid, a collector would be limited to no more than six communication attempts per week. If someone wants a collector to stop calling a certain number, such as a workplace, the new rules would make it easier to request that.

‘Bernie or Bust’ frustrates minority Dem delegates

PHILADELPHIA – As most Democrats rally around Hillary Clinton, the lingering “Bernie or Bust” movement is stirring frustration at the party’s convention among delegates of color, who say they’re upset at the refusal of Vermont senator Bernie Sanders’ most fervent backers to fall in line.

“I am so exhausted by it,” said Danielle Adams, a black Clinton delegate from North Carolina. “I think there are undercurrents of privilege that concern me.”

Adams is among those who say the “Never Hillary” crowd, a group that is largely younger and white, isn’t considering the struggles black Americans still face every day. And, they argue, how the nation’s ethnic and racial minorities may be affected by a Donald Trump presidency.

Rep. Cheryl Brown, a California delegate from San Bernardino who is black, condemned what she called the “aggressive” behavior of some Sanders delegates, saying they jumped on tables and shoved people at the state’s hotel the night that Sanders moved that the convention nominate Clinton by acclamation.

“I think here at the convention, it’s been exacerbated by the way they are treating people,” she said. “I haven’t had that happen with any of the African-American Bernie supporters.”

To be sure, many black delegates at the convention said they Elijah don’t view the “BerCummings nie or Bust” movement through a racial lens.

Count Cummings among them. He said that as a veteran of many civil rights protests, he understands the passions that drove the mostly young delegates to shout over his speech.

“The optics were not pretty, but I couldn’t be upset with them. Two or three years ago, they would have been outside politics,” he said, adding that more than 100 people have since apologized for the outbursts. “I am so glad these people are under our tent.”

Others, meanwhile, are frustrated

by Sanders backers who contend the nomination was stolen from the Vermont senator. They say those delegates are ignoring the fact Sanders lost the nomination to Clinton, in part, because he didn’t appeal strongly enough to African-American voters.

“They haven’t considered the perspective of minorities,” said Kenneth Williams, a black Clinton delegate from Texas. “I don’t think there was enough there to bridge to that community.”

Clinton undoubtedly has far more appeal than Sanders among black voters, a critical voting bloc in Democratic primaries. The former secretary of state won more than three out of four black votes in 25 primary states where exit polling was conducted and, by the end of the primary season, she had swept the 15 states with the largest black populations.

A shadow over the Rio Games According to a recently released report from the World Anti-Doping Agency, Russia’s government ran a “systematic scheme” to infuse the Russian team with performance-enhancing drugs and to cover up that cheating, before, during and after the 2014 Winter Olympics, which Russia hosted. This follows a previous report by the same agency documenting rampant doping among Russia’s track and field athletes.

And now, with about a week to go before the 2016 Summer Olympics get underway in Rio de Janeiro, the International Olympic Committee has announced Russia’s punishment: an ever-so-gentle slap on the wrist.

Instead of an outright ban on Russian participation, as the World Anti-Doping Agency had urged, the IOC will impose a convoluted case-by-case review of Russian athletes, carried out by the 28 international federations that govern each Olympic sport. Athletes will have to overcome a presumption of guilt, but given the limited time left before the Games, and the influence Moscow can bring to bear – overtly and otherwise – on the various federations, this is a dragnet through which many Russians will slip. Here’s all you need to know about what a cop-out the IOC has committed: Moscow’s minister of sport reacted positively to the ruling, proclaiming that most Russian athletes will indeed qualify to participate – and march into Rio under the Russian flag.

To be sure, officials have barred the vast majority of applicants from Russia’s tainted track and field team. Yet the banned athletes include Yulia Stepanova, who blew the whistle on her country’s cheating. Stepanova had asked to compete not on Russia’s behalf, but as a neutral, stateless athlete; officials said no because she had a past drug violation. No matter that this resulted from a system that put pressure on her to dope, and that she had the courage to speak out against it later, at tremendous risk to her career – and, in Vladimir Putin’s police state, her life.

This ethically warped performance by the panjandrums of the international Olympic “movement” casts a dark shadow indeed over the Rio proceedings. We say that not so much out of concern for the results of the Games themselves, which are bound to provide the usual portion of thrills, chills – and accusations of various transgressions by participants and officials.

Rather, Moscow’s evasion of meaningful accountability makes a mockery of the high ideals for which the Olympics purportedly stand and can only reinforce the sense of impunity with which the Putin regime approaches international norms in areas far more consequential than sports.

Congress not taking Zika seriously

Since we last wrote about the Zika virus, about a month ago, much has changed – for the worse: • The number of cases of Zika, a mosquito-borne disease that can cause severe and sometimes fatal birth defects in newborns, continues to climb. Florida leads the nation in reported Zika cases, with 358 as of Monday – about a quarter of all U.S. cases.

• Zika cases in Miami-Dade and Broward were being investigated as potentially the first infections transmitted directly by mosquito bites in the continental U.S. So far, all U.S. cases have been travel-related – meaning they were contracted by people who visited or lived in other countries.

What hasn’t changed is Congress’ shameful failure to provide funding critical to combating Zika.

On July 14, Congress adjourned for its seven-week, Labor Day recess without providing the emergency funding that President Obama, at the urging of the Centers for Disease Control and Pre-

vention, requested in February.

Instead of acting to fight this serious threat to public health, Congress has dithered over the funding level, attached unrelated, politically charged riders, and engaged in partisan finger-pointing.

This impasse, which threatens to continue into Congress’ recess for the fall campaign, is totally irresponsible.

With mosquito season here, any locally acquired infection could spread quickly. The mosquito that carries the virus, the Aedes aegypti, is common in Florida and other Southern states. It breeds easily in any standing water and can bite four to five times – making it especially dangerous for spreading Zika. The virus also can be sexually transmitted.

One Florida congressman, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, called congressional leaders’ decision to adjourn without providing the Zika funding “a national disgrace.”

He is right, of course. The emergency funding would be used to expand mosquito control and

surveillance, support testing and development of a vaccine, improve diagnostics and testing, and enhance education and prevention efforts.

Before adjournment, Senate Democrats blocked a $1.1 billion, take-it-or-leave-it Zika measure drafted by Republican leaders.

Democrats protested unrelated riders attached to the bill, including one blocking Planned Parenthood clinics in Puerto Rico from receiving money to fight the virus.

There’s doubt that Congress will approve Zika funding when members return after Labor Day. Lawmakers will take up a stopgap funding bill needed to prevent a government shutdown before they recess again for campaigns.

Buchanan is right. Congress needs to pass a clean bill to fund the federal government’s anti-Zika efforts. How many cases of tragic birth defects are necessary before Congress takes this emergency seriously?

‘That Hillary ... She’s got bigger plans’ Six times now, I’ve revised the beginning of this column to avoid starting with the word “I,” my mother’s long-ago voice ringing in my ear.

Not talking about oneself is a cornerstone of my upbringing. This is not uncommon for women of my generation. We came of age in the 1970s, at the height of the feminist movement. Many mothers like mine worried we might be getting a little full of ourselves as we mapped out our big new lives.

“All this ‘I, I, I,’” my mother said one afternoon, her final nerve frayed with all my talk about what I wanted to do – who I wanted to be – in the weeks before I left for college.

“Nobody likes a girl who talks about herself,” my mother warned.

When she chastised me for dreaming out loud, I heard the voice of a mother who couldn’t understand what it was like to be me. Too many years later, I heard what she was really saying: “What about me?”

Kent State University was as foreign to my mother as every country she had never visited – which was every one but Canada. She was a nurse’s aide who would spend all of her years in the same small county in which she was born. Like so many mothers before her, she wanted more for her daughter than a life that nobody

Three days before she died, at age 62, my mother motioned for me to lean in close and whispered through her oxygen mask. “Get all of my journals out of the house,” she said. “I want you to have them.”

“Where are they?” I asked.

“Everywhere.”

I found them tucked in drawers and in the back of closets. Two were hidden behind cookbooks in a kitchen cabinet. One was in a chest of drawers in my old bedroom.

I found nearly two dozen in all, each one filled cover to cover with my mother’s loopy handwriting. When she asked me to gather them up, I thought she wanted to protect my father’s feelings from her occasional venting. But once I began reading them, I realized my mother wanted at least one person to know the story of her life.

My mother was no different from so many women you think you know

just because they’re a part of your life. They’re full of dreams and other secrets they keep to themselves out of modesty and a certainty that no one would care anyway.

But this week, their stories are seeping out. For that, we can thank Hillary Clinton.

On Tuesday night, I stood on the floor of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia and watched the roll call before Bernie Sanders stepped up to the microphone surrounded by fellow Vermonters and made the call for party unity.

“I move that Hillary Clinton be selected as the nominee of the Democratic Party for president of the United States,” he said.

The arena erupted. Overcome with emotion, I squeezed my husband’s arm and said, “I have lived to see the day.”

In the hours since, I have heard and read on social media so many stories from women who feel the need to share a little about themselves. They are doing this almost as a public service, as if to help others explain why Clinton’s nomination matters to them.

Facebook threads, in particular, read like entries from personal journals, as rich and varied as the women who are writing them. To my delight, they are using the word “I.”

“When I was 12, my grandmother told me...”

“All of my life, I wanted to be...”

“I worked for that company for 24 years, but they...”

Many of us yearn to share this moment with women long gone. “My mother ... my grandmother ... my sister ... my friend...”

One of my friends texted me: “I swear I felt her tap on my shoulder,” she wrote. “My mother, she knows.”

My first attempt at this column began, “I wish my mother were alive to see this.” She loved first lady Hillary Clinton, who – like every strong, opinionated woman she ever saw on TV – reminded her of me. “That Hillary,” she called her, always with a smile.

“She’s got bigger plans.”

I am waiting for that tap on my shoulder. At the very least, I sure hope she knows.

The other pro-Russia thing Trump said Donald Trump is very bad at making the case that he’s not Russia’s favored candidate in the 2016 U.S. election.

It’s not just the fact that he publicly called for Russia to hack into and obtain the emails Hillary Clinton deleted from her private email server. No, Trump actually said something else at his bizarre, fact-challenged press conference Wednesday that could bring a smile to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s face.

Here’s the exchange, via a transcript: Q: “I would like to know if you became president, would you recognize (inaudible) Crimea as Russian territory? And also if the U.S. would lift sanctions that are (inaudible)?”

A: “We’ll be looking at that. Yeah, we’ll be looking.”

To Trump, “We’ll be looking at that” is his go-to, throwaway answer when he’s asked about something he hasn’t thought about, as The Washington Post cataloged earlier this month.

He does this a lot.

VIEWS Aaron Blake But recognizing Crimea as Russian territory is not something that basically anybody inside the American foreign policy mainstream is “looking at.” And were Trump to actually consider it, you can bet it would make Russia very happy indeed.

A little history: Back in March 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, an autonomous republic of Ukraine. After the ouster of the Ukrainian president, Russian troops moved in and held an unauthorized referendum in which Crimeans voted to rejoin Russia, of which it had previously been a part.

As The Post reported back then, it was “the first time that one European nation has seized territory from another since the end of World War II.” As such, U.S. and European allies roundly rejected the annexation.

Since then, Vice President Biden has

declared it an “illegal” occupation.

“The United States stands firmly with the people of Ukraine in the face of continued – and I emphasize continued – aggression from Russia and Russian-backed separatists,” Biden said in November.

So the official position of the U.S. government is that the Russian annexation of Crimea is illegal and dangerous. Trump, though, left open the possibility Wednesday of simply recognizing Crimea as a Russian territory and even perhaps lifting related sanctions.

And not only that, but a top Trump foreign policy adviser has previously said, in an interview with Bloomberg, that Russian business interests have expressed excitement to him about the prospect of a President Trump easing sanctions: “A globe-trotting American investment banker who’s built a career on deals with Russia and its state-run gas company, Carter Page says his business has suffered directly from the U.S. economic sanctions imposed

after Russia’s escalating involvement in the Ukraine. When Donald Trump named him last week as one of his foreign-policy advisers, Page says his email inbox filled up with positive notes from Russian contacts. ‘So many people who I know and have worked with have been so adversely affected by the sanctions policy,’ Page said in a two-hour interview last week.

‘There’s a lot of excitement in terms of the possibilities for creating a better situation.’ “ As I’ve said, Democrats may be a bit ahead of the intelligence community in their level of confidence that Russia is actively working to elect Trump as president, but there is plenty of circumstantial evidence lending credence to that idea.

And if Trump wants to shake off that allegation, comments like today’s won’t help.

St. Mary’s Church of Sycamore Youth Ministry program sent 21 teens and five adults to Memphis to take part in the Catholic Heart Workcamp June 5-10. The group joined 200 other teens and adults for the week to help local residents and social agencies with building repairs, clean-up, construction, yard work, painting, food pantry help, and distributing donated goods. In addition to spreading God’s love throughout the community, they also participated in daily Mass, Reconciliation and evening programs designed to enrich their service experiences and faith. In preparation for their week of service, the team hosted several fundraisers and spent a day of service in Sycamore by collecting food for the Sycamore Food Pantry, doing chores at St. Mary’s and participating in team building and poverty simulation activities.

BRIEFS Hinckley church sets barbecue supper

The public is invited to the annual Bar-B-Q Pork Roast and Sweet Corn Boil Supper on Aug. 3, hosted by St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 324 W. McKinley St. in Hinckley.

The pork roasts are cooked outdoors with a secret sauce, and the corn is picked that morning. Side dishes include German potato salad, American potato salad, applesauce, rolls and desserts. Dinner will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Diners can eat at the church in the air-conditioned Fellowship Hall or take carry-out from the View Street entrance.

Advance tickets are not required.

Meals are offered for a $12 donation for adults and $6 for children.

Big Rock church hosts community picnic

The public is invited to a Community Picnic on Aug. 7, sponsored by the English Congregational United Church of Christ in Big Rock.

The picnic will be at Plowman’s Park in Big Rock.

The worship service will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Biblical ancestor portrayal. At noon, a roast pork lunch will be served, complete with potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, applesauce, rolls, drinks and dessert.

A hot dog lunch also will be available for a donation of $2.

In addition, there will be games, raffles and prize.

Tickets are available at the event for a $10 donation a person.

Inspiring teenagers as part of history DAILY CHRONICLE As part of the Sycamore History Museum’s “Faces of Sycamore” related programming, several young adults shared their stories during a program on July 13. There were four presentations that all captured the spirit of making a difference.

The first group featured the Penguin Project. Director Tracey Busby shared some background information about Penguin Project. Since 2010, CCT’s Penguin Project has given children and adults between the ages of 10 and 22 with disabilities the opportunity to perform in Broadway-style musical productions. Each production’s success is based on a partnership between the artists and mentor who work together for months. To provide a sample of their work two actresses and a mentor performed a few songs from last year’s production “Fiddler on the Roof.” This year’s performance will be “Shrek Jr.” from Sept. 8-11.

The second speaker was April McKay, an ambassador Girl Scout who earned her Silver Award. She talked about how she created craft boxes that are used at the Ella Johnson Memori-

She died in 2013. As a way to continue her legacy and her love for reading, Bunge’s project included organizing a book drive and building a special book shelf for her in West’s Library. The goal was to collect 300 books. By the end of his project he collected more than 3,000.

Finally, Elizabeth Fritz and Nathan Flaherty talked about a video project taken on by the Sycamore History Club.

They have been collecting information about the story of Robert Varty, a WWII veteran from Sycamore who received the Purple Heart. The club’s goal is to present this amazing story as a Youtube video describing one of Sycamore’s heroes during the Sycamore High School’s Veterans Day program.

On July 10, the Rev. Dean Russell of St. Mary Parish in DeKalb blessed the new Memorial Garden and statue in St. Mary Cemetery located on Sycamore Road in DeKalb. The garden is a memorial for all children who died before they were born, a place for healing and peace for all who have lost children through stillbirth, miscarriage or abortion.

Target’s Upstream Distribution Center in DeKalb recently donated thousands of new clothing items for children and adults to local organizations.

The items had been used for testing for the new, expanded facility.

Several local organizations – including DeKalb County Youth Service Bureau, Children’s Learning Center, Elder Care Services, Love INC and Permancy Action Team of DeKalb County – were invited to participate in a free “shopping spree” on June 4 at Target’s center on Macom Drive.

Each invited organization was able to select up to 4,000 different items of Target brand clothing ranging from baby and toddlers (mostly for girls) to children and adults. Also included was underwear and socks and some bedding. Target volunteers were on hand with bags for packing and loading up.

Toledo’s Candle one of 3 new coaches in the MAC

jseverson@shawmedia.com DETROIT – Taking the reins as the new Toledo football coach, Jason Candle said his Rockets don’t necessarily have a rivalry with Northern Illinois.

He said the Rockets will have to beat the Huskies one of these years for it to be a rivalry.

“Rivalry to me is when the other team wins once in a while,” Candle laughed. “I have a lot of respect for Rod Carey. I have a lot of respect for the Northern Illinois program. There’s a culture there that understands winning and a culture that expects to win.”

The Huskies have won six straight over the Rockets, who last won a meeting in 2009.

Candle is one of three new head coaches in the Mid-American Conference this season, with Mike Jinks taking over at Bowling Green and Mike

Neu in charge at Ball State.

Candle and the Rockets will be a part of a historic game during the season when they are hosted by NIU at U.S. Cellular Field in the first game played at the home of the White Sox. He said he is happy with the game being played at U.S. Cellular Field – especially if it means taking the game away from Huskie Stadium.

“I’d rather it be there than at Huskie Stadium, and I’m glad they didn’t take our home game,” he laughed. “You see that happening in college football, and I think it’ll be really cool for our players, 40-50 years from now to say, ‘Yeah, we played at a baseball stadium.’ I think that’s really neat.”

While Neu takes over a Ball State program that went 3-9 overall and 2-6 in the MAC in 2015, both Candle and Jinks are inheriting a 10-win team from last season. Candle was the offensive coordinator for the Rockets be-

fore Matt Campbell left for Iowa State, and Jinks was a running backs coach at Texas Tech and comes to Bowling Green after Dino Babers left for Syracuse.

Jinks now controls the reigning MAC championships, and inherits a high-powered offense that scored 42.2 points a game and went 10-4 overall – although they are losing star quarterback Matt Johnson and other key members of the offense.

The Red Raiders averaged 46.6 points a game last year (second most in FBS), and Jinks said it’s a balancing act to put his fingerprints on the program without changing too much of a team that’s been to three straight MAC Championship games. “(Texas Tech) Coach (Kliff) Kingsbury is one of my better friends and when we got together, that’s one of the last things he told me was to understand these guys have been very suc-

cessful, especially on the offensive end, don’t come in and try to force what we do down their throat,” Jinks said. “Be smart. Merge it. Study what they do, and we’ve tried to do that.”

Candle also inherits a high-powered Toledo offense that averaged 35 points a game and returns two star running backs in Kareem Hunt and Terry Swanson.

“There’s a fine line of trying to put your stamp on a program but not disrupting a culture,” Candle said. “Even though our culture is really good, some of our players need some adjusting from time to time. We’re a constant in motion program, just like every program in the country.”

Déjà vu: Huskies aren’t picked to capture MAC West

Q&A with Huskies At the 2016 Mid-American Media Day, Daily Chronicle sports reporter Jesse Severson decided to have a little fun and ask Northern Illinois quarterback Drew Hare and cornerback Shawun Lurry some nonfootball questions.

Severson: So Drew, who’s the biggest “Game of Thrones” fan on the team?

Hare: Either Sean Folliard or Anthonie Maddie.

Severson: Who’s the best dancer on the team?

Lurry: Renard Cheren. He’s big, but he can move.

Hare: Renard Cheren.

Severson: What’s the most exotic or weirdest food you’ve ever had?

Lurry: When I went on a visit to Bowling Green, it was some type of squid or something. I forgot what it was. It was horrible.

Hare: Not a big exotic food guy.

I stick to what I know. Big buffalo chicken guy and pizza.

Severson: Shawun, how often do people call you, “Shawn”?

Lurry: (laughs) A lot. They call me Shawn a lot, even back in elementary school they call me Shawn. Teachers would call me that, Shawn. I say “Shawun” and they still just say “Shawn.”

Severson: If you had to place yourself in a weightlifting competition of guys your own size, what lift would you enter yourself in?

Hare: I wouldn’t even put myself in a lifting competition. Uh, let’s do some tricep extensions. I can match up with the best in those.

Severson: Who’s the strongest guy on the team?

Lurry: Between Anthony Maddie, Jawaun Johnson or Jamaal Payton.

Hare: Nate Veloz.

Severson: Which guy on the team would be most likely to believe in aliens?

Lurry: (laughs) Probably Levon Myers.

Hare: I’d imagine Joel Bouagnon.

Despite coming off their sixth consecutive MAC West title, the Huskies were selected to finish third in the division by the media – behind Western Michigan and Toledo.

“At this point, it is what it is, I’m not going to look into it too much,” NIU quarterback Drew Hare said. “I’m not going to let it affect my day, it happens every year.”

Central Michigan was picked to finish fourth, ahead of Ball State and Eastern Michigan.

Bowling Green, which won the MAC Championship game last season over NIU, was selected to win the MAC East – ahead of Ohio, Akron, Buffalo, Miami and Kent State.

In the MAC West, the Broncos got 19 first-place vote for 144 points, and while the Huskies had more first-place votes (three) than Toledo (two), the Rockets edged them out with 113 points – one more than NIU. “We have a team in the West that has won six straight championships and they don’t get picked,” Western Michigan coach PJ Fleck said about being the preseason favorites. “You gotta be kidding me. They won six straight. I don’t understand that. ... Northern Illinois has been the top dog in this conference for a very long time.”

Central Michigan also got two firstplace votes. Bowling Green (12 first-place votes, 136 points) edged out Ohio (10 firstplace votes, 134 points) as the favorite in the MAC East.

The MAC Championship is Dec. 2 at Ford Field in Detroit.

He said there was discussion about limiting third-party influence and forcing the camps to be held at four-year universities.

“That’s me throwing an idea out there,” Steinbrecher said. “One of my concerns are where camps are and how they got there and how are they paid for and who’s being paid. I want to eliminate third-party influence on this.”

Steinbrecher said the struggle is finding the sweet spot of providing some control to the situation with not forcing too many regulations. NIU holds an annual camp at Gately Stadium, which is controlled by the Chicago Public Schools.

Carey said that the idea of holding them at four-year universities comes from Steinbrecher, not from all of the coaches.

“I voiced to him yesterday, and we all had a chance, and I voiced that I’m not necessarily in favor of that,” Carey said.

“I do hear his concern with third-party entities because that’s a big deal for us.

It’s murky waters and somehow we have to get through this.”

Half of the 12 receivers that were named all-MAC in 2015 return from last season, including Western Michigan’s Corey Davis (first team), NIU’s Kenny Golladay (second team), Central Michigan’s Jesse Kroll (third team), Bowling Green’s Ronnie Moore (third team), Ohio’s Sebastian Smith (Ohio) and Ball State’s KeVonn Mabon (third team).

After saying wide receivers were the top position, Carey was quick to clarify his stance.

“That’s off the top of my head, you can’t hold me to that,” he laughed.

But behind the scenes, we were winning every day in recruiting and developing.

We knew the process was way more important than the result, but it’s hard for people to understand – with the media and the world we live in today of immediate gratification – you got to be careful saying, ‘OK, I’m going to sacrifice this, this and this, in order for us to be win this year so I look good.’ “

Maybe it was only fitting that the culmination of this bizarre week of Cubs and Sox nonbaseball would come down to the two left-handers who seemed at the center of every subplot of the week.

White Sox ace Chris Sale returning from jersey-shredding suspension to start the last of four games between the teams Thursday.

And Aroldis Chapman, the controversial closer acquired by the Cubs Monday in a trade with the Yankees finishing the four-game set with his first save as a Cub. The Cubs earned a 3-1 victory at Wrigley Field to earn a split in the fourgame season Crosstown Series – with Chapman entering in the eighth to face Melky Cabrera with two out and the tying run at third in a 2-1 game.

Chapman struck out Cabrera swinging at a 102-mph fastball to the gasps of a full-house crowd still getting used to triple-digit scoreboard velocity read-

ings.

Then he finished the game with a scoreless ninth for a four-out save – his 21st of the season overall.

For the second night in a row, former Cubs closer Hector Rondon started the eighth to set up the Chapman finish – pushing Pedro Strop down the pecking order into Thursday’s scoreless seventh.

“It just shortens the game for the other team, and they know they only have so much time before the game is over, mentally,” Zobrist said. “That’s what [Chapman] does with our bullpen, is just takes it to that next level, where the game is at least an inning shorter.”

Sale didn’t have his All-Star sharpness after nine days between starts, but he pitched out of enough trouble to get through six innings, allowing just two runs. He struck out four and walked three.

Zobrist scored an eighth-inning insurance run, hitting a leadoff triple into the right-field corner off Nate Jones and scoring on a one-out grounder to short by Addison Russell.

Cubs starter John Lackey (8-7) also pitched six innings, allowing just a first-inning run, earning his first win since June 8 – nine starts ago.

A 60-foot single by Tim Anderson turned into the only run against Lackey. Anderson topped a weak grounder down the third base line that died on the grass just fair for a one-out hit.

Melky Cabrera followed with a run-scoring double – before Lackey retired 16 of the next 19 batters he faced, allowing only a second-inning walk (followed by a double play) and a pair of singled in the sixth the rest of the way.

Royal ready to join Jeffery, White to help reach potential

Royal was productive at camp in 2015 before injuries limited season

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS – Reporters and cameras crowded around Kevin White following his first training camp practice as a Bear. A few minutes later, the media surrounded Alshon Jeffery, the team’s franchise-tagged player.

On a bench nearby sat Eddie Royal, who laughed at the idea that he’s the forgotten man in the Bears’ receiver conversations.

“Those guys are getting attention and they deserve it,” he said Thursday. “They’re great players. I’ve been around long enough to know that it’s all about winning games, and those guys know that, too. We all have the same mindset and same attitude.

What’s being written doesn’t matter.

It’s about winning, and we all know that.”

At this time last summer, White and Jeffery certainly were the talk of camp – for different reasons – but it was Royal who lit it up on the field, showing off an impressive rapport with Jay Cutler. The summer positives didn’t carry on into the season, though, as injuries limited Royal to nine games in his first season with the Bears. He had 37 catches for 238 yards and one touchdown, a year af-

ter he had 778 yards and seven scores in San Diego.

“I busted my butt [this offseason], I’ll tell you that. I do that every offseason,” he said. “You play long enough, you realize injuries happen, and that’s part of the game. There’s not anything I could have done to prevent those injuries. Sometimes, you get tackled the wrong way, it’s football.”

In his ninth training camp, Royal, 30, is the second-oldest skill player on the Bears – one year younger than Zach Miller. The summer is about honing his craft, allowing him to be the receiver he’s been in the NFL and the one Bears fans certainly saw last camp. At Thursday’s first practice of 2016, he went up to make a very impressive catch of a pass down the sideline over cornerback Jacoby Glenn.

“I try to break it down to the little things – yeah, I made the catch, but what else could I have done different to get better separation?” Royal said.

“I try to break it down to that to when I get to the season, I can just play. Iron out all the details now and then play ball during the season.”

If everyone gets to where Royal is with his details, there is a lot of intrigue about what this receiving group can do – Jeffery, White and Royal.

“You always see the potential, everybody sees it,” Royal said. “Potential means nothing. You’ve got to put in the work. It’s the work that matters. We all know how good we can be. It’s about putting the work in now so we can be even better than we thought we could be.”

Long wearing walking boot following first camp practice

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS – Kyle Long didn’t finish practice Thursday when the Bears opened training camp.

John Fox said he thought it was a calf injury, and Long was spotted later in the afternoon with a walking boot on his left leg.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, it’s a calf strain that “doesn’t seem severe.”

Long, a three-time Pro Bowler, is the team’s starter at right guard. If he misses time, it’s likely that Ted Larsen and Cody Whitehair will line up as the guards with the first team.

Floyd exits camp practice with illness

By PRO FOOTBALL WEEKLY STAFF Bears top pick Leonard Floyd exited the first training camp practice Thursday on a cart because of an illness.

John Fox indicated after practice Floyd has been sick for several days and that’s the reason for his departure, but it’s “nothing to worry about.” Floyd tried to battle through it for his first NFL camp practice, Fox said, but was unable to finish.

“I’m feeling good right now,” Floyd said. “What happened today was I’ve been a little under the weather the past couple of days and the trainers knew that. They told me to go out and give it a shot today and then they shut me down. I really was begging them to let me go back out there. They told me to shut it down and try again tomorrow. I’m basically just trying to get back healthy and get back out there.”

Floyd, whom the Bears traded up to No. 9 overall to select, is expected to rev up Chicago’s pass rush, which managed just 35 sacks, tied for 22nd in the NFL. Floyd is aware of the buzz surrounding his first training camp in the NFL, which is why he “begged” the trainers to stay on the field.

“Because I knew everybody was excited about me being out there today and I didn’t want to let anybody down,” he said. “I was really mad at the trainers for not letting me go back out there. I’m looking forward to going back out there tomorrow and attacking the day.”

With that memory still fresh for the Bears, seeing Floyd on a cart understandably concerned Bears fans, but it appears he’ll be ready to practice on Friday and he’s already looking forward to getting in pads on Saturday.

“With the pads on I pretty much can do what I want to,” he said. “Without the pads, you’ve got to hold it back a little bit. Be able to cut it loose a little bit more with the pads on.”

Johnson, the U.S. Open champion with a chance to go to No. 1 in the world, was in the trees, in the water and couldn’t get out of a bunker. He managed only one birdie in a round of 77 that wasn’t enough to beat 15 of the club pros at Baltusrol.

He wasn’t alone in his misery. McIlroy took 35 putts and didn’t make a birdie in his round of 74 that left him so frustrated that he returned to Baltusrol late in the day with only his putter.

Walker’s year has been so mediocre that he has finished within five shots of the winner only once this year, at Torrey Pines. He is on the verge of falling out of the top 50 in the world ranking and hasn’t given as much thought to Ryder Cup with qualifying a month away from ending.

“I feel like all year it’s just been real stale and stagnant,” Walker said. “It’s just ebbs and flows of golf. Just haven’t been scoring. ... It’s frustrating. I would have loved to have had a better year than I’ve had so far to this point, but I know there’s always time to play well at the end of the year.”

SPRINGFIELD – A drab year for Jimmy Walker took a turn for the worse two weeks ago at the British Open, when he stayed in what was dubbed the “frat house” at Royal Troon with Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas, Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson. Walker was the only one to miss the cut.

He still stayed the weekend. He just stayed away from the golf course, and his clubs. How does one kill time in such a small Scottish town?

“When the first guy comes back and he’s ready for a cocktail, you have one,” Walker said.

Thursday in the PGA Championship, the drinks were on Walker.

In the final major of the year, Walker finally saw enough putts to fall at Baltusrol that he matched his low score in a major with a 5-under 65 and wound up leading a major for the first time in his career.

Just like that, a stale year came to life. Walker had a one-shot lead over two-time major champion Martin Kaymer, Emiliano Grillo and Ross Fisher.

For Henrik Stenson, a great year might get even better. Coming off his record performance at the British Open, the Swede had three birdies on the back nine as the sweltering heat gave way to dark clouds and 20 mph gusts. That gave him a 67, leaving him two shots behind. Stenson is trying to join Ben Hogan in 1953 as the only players to win back-to-back majors at age 40.

“It’s going to be a great season for me,” Stenson said. “But at the same time, I want to give myself a chance to try to make it the best season.”

Exercise good for brain and heart Dear Dr. K: You say physical exercise helps to improve brain health, but it’s not obvious to me how that could be. Do researchers understand exactly how exercise helps the brain?

Dear Reader: I understand why that’s puzzling. It’s easier to see how regular moderate exercise could protect against heart disease, for example. The heart is a muscle, and exercise makes the heart exercise.

But the brain? We don’t think of exercise as requiring a lot of brainpower. In fact, some people like exercise because it’s a time when they can turn off their brain.

First, what’s the evidence regular exercise does protect the brain? There are many studies. As an example, a study published in February 2016 in the journal Neurology links better cardiovascular fitness to improved thinking skills in older adults.

The study included 877 adults with an average age of 65 years. Researchers used a measure called “VO2 max” to assess their fitness. This is the maximum amount of oxygen your body uses while you’re exercising as hard as you can.

Study participants also took a variety of tests to gauge their thinking skills, memory and executive function. (Executive function is a term for mental skills used to manage time, plan and organize, and remember details.)

The researchers divided the participants into four groups based on their VO2 max values. They found striking differences in executive function between those with the highest and lowest VO2 max levels. In fact, those with the lowest VO2 max scores tested about seven years older than those with the highest VO2 max scores.

The trends were similar for memory and overall thinking ability. These corresponded to age differences of six and four years,

How does exercise contribute to brain health? We know of several ways, and there surely are more we haven’t discovered yet.

One possible way is by improving the blood supply to the brain.

For the brain to get an optimal blood supply, it needs two things. First, a healthy heart to pump blood to the brain efficiently.

Second, brain arteries that haven’t been narrowed by atherosclerosis, and therefore deliver blood to the brain efficiently.

Regular exercise strengthens the heart and reduces the risk of developing atherosclerosis.

Exercise also stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the brain and fuels the growth and survival of new brain cells. It does this by stimulating the production in the brain of natural chemicals that encourage new brain cells to develop and keep older brain cells healthy. Brain-imaging studies suggest key brain areas responsible for thinking and memory are larger in people who exercise than in those who don’t.

How much exercise do you need to keep body and mind working well? Two hours and 30 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity help keep your heart fit. And your brain fit, too.

For the past 10 years, I have been living with mounting guilt over the fact he doesn’t have a sibling. It’s not because my husband and I haven’t tried, we have. But fertility issues took us down an empty road, and adoption discussions were just that – discussions.

I can’t tell you how many times our son has said he wishes he had a sibling. Every time, it’s like a knife in my heart, and the guilt surges back. I think about the future and how he will have no sibling to share life with or lean on when something happens to my husband or me.

Sometimes I feel like I have failed him horribly.

It’s worth noting my son is a happy, well-adjusted child. He has good peer relationships in school, is close to me and my husband and has hobbies and friends he enjoys. What happens after that?

Over South’s one-spade opening bid, West might have made a takeout double. It would have risked East’s advancing in clubs with only a fourcard suit. Here, though, the double would have worked fine because East would have bid hearts. Note that four hearts is laydown for East-West.

When West passed, North correctly upgraded his hand to a game-force, first showing his excellent club suit, then jumping to four spades. (Note that the auction is the same in twoover-one, North’s four-spade rebid indicating a minimum game-force.)

When West sees the dummy, it should be clear to him that his side must immediately take two hearts and two diamonds -- but how?

East’s job at trick one is to say whether he does or does not hold the heart queen, the honor touching those promised by West’s ace lead.

If East does not, he plays his lowest heart. If he does, he plays the highest heart he can afford, which here is the queen. This shows the queen and the jack. (It cannot be a singleton queen, because that would give South six hearts.)

This should give West the key: At trick two, he leads a low heart to put his partner on lead for the fatal diamond-queen shift.
