And now it’s Comcast vs. the wait for the cable guy

NEW YORK – Did you hear the one about the cable company that’s actually improving customer service? The punchline: Comcast and its rivals say it’s no joke.

These companies have poured hundreds of millions into new tools and staff to de-agonize the process of getting cable TV, Internet or phone service. It’s part of a yearslong effort to assuage customers as the specter of “cord-cutting” – dumping cable for Netflix and the like – haunts the industry. More than 2 million customers have fled from cable and satellite over the past three years, according to research firm SNL Kagan, and the pace has been accelerating.

Comcast, for instance, is trying to demystify the wait for the cable guy via a new mapbased app customers can use to track its techs in real time.

Trapped customers

It’s difficult, however, to tell if the tracking app – along with other improvements such as shorter waits, more responsive reps, and doit-yourself installations – can shake the widespread sense that cable companies charge too much while inflicting lousy service on hapless customers.

After all, while internet-based TV options – Netflix, PlayStation Vue, Hulu – and satellite alternatives like Dish have mushroomed, most Americans have no choice but their local cable company for home broadband. And cable bills typically only go one direction – up – as the companies look to cover their own rising costs for TV programming.

All of which can become infuriating when things just don’t work well.

Cable’s listening tour

The industry is eager to confess its sins.

“We got this thing wrong historically,” says

John Keib, formerly Time Warner Cable’s executive vice president for residential services.

“I think some of that image was definitely earned.”

The economics of cord-cutting are certainly one big motivation. Another one: Bad customer experiences can easily devolve into public-relations nightmares, thanks to social media. A round-up of these embarrassments makes for fun reading, including one customer’s herculean effort to quit Comcast and others who got cursed at in their bills.

Unhappy customers also cost more. “They call more, take more time on the phone, say really nasty things,” says Scott Broetzmann, a customer-service consultant.

Putting the cable guy out to pasture

Efforts to improve service reach back several years. Comcast, for instance, is in the process of hiring an additional 5,500 customer-service reps over three years. Charter also plans to hire 20,000 in-house employees to replace contractors who worked in customer service and elsewhere.

The companies say they’re making it easier to get in touch. You can leave a number for a call back instead of waiting on hold. They’ve shrunk appointment windows from four hours to one hour at Time Warner Cable – one to two hours at Comcast – and Time Warner had said it was making more night and weekend appointments available as well. Comcast has rolled out the app feature that tracks techs, though it hasn’t advertised it yet.

And the consumer says ...

Are customers happier? The number of complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau didn’t change significantly in 2014 or 2015, but those represent just a tiny fraction of all cable customers. A well-known customer-service index shows that bottom-of-the-barrel scores at Time Warner Cable and Comcast have gotten modestly better this year.

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Bruce Rangel might be 41, but he has the spirit of a 16-year-old boy out past curfew.

Skateboarding started as a hobby for Rangel in 1986, but on Wednesday he was outside keeping up with today’s crop of young skaters at Kishwaukee Fest’s Skate Street. DeKalb business Fargo Skate Company shut down a portion of Locust Street on Wednesday to provide local skaters with a make-shift outdoor skate park.

“The whole concept of Kishwaukee Fest is to have something every night, of either a different genre or different activities,” said the festival’s executive director, Michael Embrey. “When we first started Kishwaukee Fest, we tried to do a concert for the kids, but we couldn’t find the right music. Who knows what music kids really want?

So we created the skateboarding event.”

Most of Fargo Skate’s 15-to-20member sponsored team came out to represent the company, but it wasn’t just young skaters who showed up Wednesday. A lot has changed since 1986, but the skateboarding scene has only become stronger and more innovative, Rangel said.

“Hopefully it goes to the Olympics. That’s what I’m waiting for – to see this progress that far, that’s an achievement beyond me. I didn’t even know it was going to go this far,” he said. “It’s still the same. Everybody of all nationalities, it doesn’t matter who you are, if you’re white or Mexican, it brings everybody together and everybody has a good time. There’s no downside to it.”

Newer skater, Aiden Perez-Cano, however, could think of at least one downside. The 6-year-old broke his foot skating last year, and spent an hour Wednesday trying to teach himself to Ollie, all while overcoming his nerves.

“It’s really hard,” he said. “You have to jump and hold on to something, and then you have to land on the board.”

Owner of Fargo Skate Company, Ariel Ries, helped the pint-sized skater maneuver himself in Wednesday in full elbow-, hand- and knee-pads and a mohawk-adorned helmet.

It’s the same sense of adrenaline, however, that keeps Rangel skating, he said. Seeing a younger person invent a complicated trick is less of a challenge and more of an invitation for him to try to keep up, he said.

“It can be boring and then once I get on the board everything just comes to life,” he said. “I love it a lot.”

DeKalb Panda Express closes permanently

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Lincoln Highway’s Panda Express has closed for good. The company decided to cut back on the number of restaurants in the area, DeKalb Community Development Director Ellen Divita said.

A Wingstop in the same strip also has closed and is expected to re-open, although the building’s owner, InSite Real Estate, could not say when.

The DeKalb Fire Department is investigating a suspicious fire at the Wingstop building, 1015 W. Lincoln Highway, Fire Chief Eric Hicks said.

Officials believe the small fire might have been set maliciously inside the restaurant.

A sign on the door states the city’s administrative hearing officer revoked Wing Stop’s fire life safety license May 18. Although the popular chicken restaurant potentially could re-open, the Panda Express just next door is closed for good, Divita said.

Kane allegedly wrote 24 bad checks totaling $48,241.41. Most of the checks were to car and motorcycle dealerships, including at least two in DeKalb County, police have said.

Kane told the judge that he would be unable to post $100 bail.

Judge Montgomery said he wouldn’t release Kane on a recognizance bond, or at all, unless he post a reasonable amount of money.

David T. Wildey, age 71, of Naperville, IL, and longtime resident of Lombard, IL, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2016.

He was born May 11, 1945 in DeKalb.

He was a highly decorated platoon Sergeant in the United States Army, and served his country during the Vietnam War. David is survived by his loving wife, Janelle (nee Carpenter) Wildey; his children, Sman Soh, Ken Kennedy, Michael (Jamie) Browning, Kurt (Catina) Browning and Stacey (Michael) Veseling; grandchildren, Brittiney, Courtney, Rachel, Douglas, Danielle, Aidan and David; great-grandchildren, Ajna and Arijah; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department has welcomed a new furry friend it hopes will aid in further developing good community relations.

Gee Gee, a golden retriever, made her debut at the police station Wednesday, as officers led a group of children on a building tour. She is not part of the K-9 unit.

Instead, the 7-year-old therapy dog belongs to DeKalb resident and police department volunteer Dave Ball. The police plan to use her to quell the anxiety people – especially youngsters – may have when it comes to interacting with officers.

“We will bring her out to events in the community that the DeKalb police plan on attending,” said Kelly Sullivan, community relations officer for the police department. “ [Her presence] at times can make the police more approachable to members in the community – whether it be children or adults.”

Sullivan said Gee Gee could be around for events such as the upcoming Corn Fest. The dog also volunteers with the Healing Paws Program at Kishwaukee Hospital and at Northern Illinois University, according to

Therapy dogs such as Gee Gee are increasingly being used for affection and comfort to humans in a variety of situations.

The dogs usually aren’t assistance or service animals, but are specially trained.

According to the American Kennel Club, the dogs and their owners work as a team to help improve a person’s life.

“Everybody loves a cute, furry dog,” Sullivan said. “We hope she can work with our department as long as she’s willing and able.”

DeKALB – The commemorative armored vehicle in Memorial Park will get a touch-up this weekend, as veterans plan to give it a new paint job.

American Legion Post 66 Cmdr. Dan Gallagher said, with the help of generous donations from residents and local business owners, about a half dozen volunteers will work to paint “Donna the Tank.” It’s located in the park on Lincoln Highway (Route 38) at First Street.

He said it’s been about 70 years since the vehicle was last painted. Gallagher

said, the effort has included help from retailers such as Farm and Fleet, which offered the paint at a “huge” discount.

Lovette’s Body Shop will be providing hardener for the paint to help it last longer. And Walt Machine and Tool will be doing some welding work to close up some holes on the memorial vehicle.

“A lot of debris was getting inside the tank, which was causing corrosion,” Gallagher said.

Six or seven people, including members from the American Legion and Northern Illinois University veterans club, are expected to do the painting Saturday and Sunday, Gallagher said.

Ruby Tuesday in DeKalb closes

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The city’s Ruby Tuesday was among the rest of Ruby Tuesday Inc.’s franchise-operated locations throughout the state to close unexpectedly Wednesday.

A sign on the doors at Ruby Tuesday, 2370 Sycamore Road, DeKalb, read “closed today – thank you.” Ruby Tuesday has 14 Illinois locations, three of which – Decatur, Champaign and Quincy – are listed online as being permanently closed. Non-franchise-owned locations including Fairview Heights, Collinsville and Litchfield will remain open, employees from each location said Wednesday.

Phone lines to the remaining eight franchise-owned restaurants throughout the state were either unanswered or out of order Wednesday evening.

“Our Illinois Ruby Tuesday restaurants were owned and operated by an independent franchisee. As the franchiser of this concept, we went to great lengths in assisting the franchisee to remain

open, but he has made the decision to close his restaurants,” the company said in a statement Wednesday. “We appreciate the patronage of the many residents and guests that have dined at the Illinois Ruby Tuesday restaurants over the years along with the dedicated employees of the franchisee and will evaluate opportunities to return to the market in the future.”

DeKalb city management analyst Jared Heyn was not aware of the closure Wednesday. The city sent a DeKalb fire inspector, who handles some of the restaurant’s licensing, to check on the restaurant Wednesday afternoon, but could not make contact with workers.

A class action lawsuit was filed against Ruby Tuesday Inc. earlier this year, accusing the company of violating the Fair Labor Standards Act. According to the lawsuit, the company encouraged employees to work off-the-clock by limiting the hours they are allowed to be clocked in and pays its employees less than minimum wage for non-tipped work.

A: Arcoroc was the name used

by Arc International Food Service, a company in Arques, Pas-de-Calais, France. The company was founded in 1825. The name became Verrerie Cristallerie d’Arques in 1892. The name “Arcoroc” was first used in 1958 for the company’s tempered glass. The glassware was sold in U.S. department stores after a sales subsidiary was opened in the U.S. in 1966. Depression glass was popular in the 1980s and ‘90s, and Arcoroc’s Rosaline was a popular pattern. The tempered glassware could be used in the microwave or freezer. The name of the company became Arc International in 2000. It currently makes dinnerware, glassware and stainless-steel flatware for restaurants, bars, and hotels. A cup and saucer sells for $3 to $6. *** Q: When I married in 1954, my husband and I purchased 12 place settings of Eberthal china with serving pieces. We have dinner and salad plates, cups and saucers and bowls. It was used infrequently, well stored, and is in excellent condition. Could you give us a value?

Christian left to form his own factory in 1909. Johann died in 1921, leaving his business to his sons, Robert and Christian. During World War II, the company made items for the war effort like insulators, but factory buildings were damaged and the company closed, rebuilt, reopened and operated until about 2000. The Eberthal brand was introduced after the war in the early 1950s as a less-expensive line of dishes and was made until the 1970s.

It was similar to the regular Seltmann products, but the decorations were slightly different, ranging from traditional flowers and scrolls to more abstract designs. Eberthal sets the size of yours have sold at auction from $75 to $360. It is difficult to sell a large set of dishes online because of the work and cost of packing and shipping.

The most popular patterns today are different from those of the 1950s. If your set has an abstract design, it might sell for about $150 to $200. *** Tip: If you collect the decorated glasses from fast-food restaurants, never wash them in the dishwasher.

Dolls have been favored toys for centuries. Long before there were manufactured china, metal or plastic headed dolls, there were wooden, rag and even dried-apple heads. And often, where there was no available doll material, folk-art dolls were made with leather and beads, silk stockings, felt, carved stone and fur, knit socks, clothes pins, wishbones, corn cobs, acorns and pinecones - even old broomsticks. A 2016 doll auction sold a German carved wooden folk-art doll, made in about 1850 from a hollow wooden tube and other wood pieces, for $1,600. It is 20 inches tall and is decorated with a painted geometric design. There are no arms or legs, but the paint suggests a bunting blanket used on babies. The auction catalog called it the “bed post doll” because the head looked like the top of a bed post and was, perhaps, made from a recycled bedpost. The original painted finish, age, size and originality all added to the value. *** Q: What can you tell me about furniture made by H. Sachs & Sons?

They were in Brookline, Mass., in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

A: Almost no information is available on the company. A 1922 ad for the company included antique furniture, brass, and antique restoring. The company is known for its furniture designed by Paul McCobb in the early 1950s, and for its reproductions of antique furniture. It still was in business in 1983. *** Q: We have an old cast-iron stove that reads “Wooddale Belknap Hdw. & Mfg. Co. Louisville, KY” on the front.

Kennedy blasts Rauner at Democrats’ convention

CHICAGO – Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan said Chris Kennedy, the son of the late Robert F. Kennedy, would be an “excellent candidate” for governor in 2018.

Madigan made the comments in Philadelphia on Tuesday after Kennedy spoke to Illinois delegation at the Democratic convention. Madigan also praised U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin as a potential gubernatorial candidate, saying he would be “uniquely qualified for the job.”

The Chicago Tribune reported that Kennedy used his address Tuesday to criticize Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner for trying to curb the power of unions and for the

state’s lack of a complete budget.

“The suffering and chaos that he has unleashed on the people of Illinois needs to end,” Kennedy said.

But after his speech, Kennedy declined to address speculation that he’s interested in the state’s top office.

“I said what I was going to say inside today,” he said.

Rauner’s office did not address Kennedy’s comments, saying in a statement that the governor is focused on Illinois.

Elections board: Mautino misses filing deadline

CHICAGO – Illinois Board of Elections officials said Auditor General Frank Mautino didn’t file amended campaign disclosure reports and could face a public hearing.

Election board Executive Director Steve Sandvoss told The (Springfield) State Journal-Register that Mautino didn’t file the amended reports by Monday’s deadline. The hearing would look into Mautino’s use of campaign money while serving in the Illinois House.

The investigations cover the Spring Valley Democrat’s time as a legislator, including more than $200,000 spent at an alderman-owned service station. Republicans are pushing him to step aside and earlier this month filed a resolution aimed at removing him from office.

Mautino has acknowledged cooperation with federal prosecutors. His spokesman said Tuesday that Mautino

Police union to officers: Don’t request overtime

CHICAGO – Chicago’s police union is asking officers to not volunteer to work overtime during the Labor Day weekend to protest the “continued disrespect” toward officers and the killings of law enforcement personnel nationwide.

The Chicago Police Department typically deploys thousands of officers on overtime to counteract the spike in shootings that usually occurs during long holiday weekends. But in a recent flier sent to rank-and-file officers, the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 advises against officers volunteering for duty.

“There is a new level of concern that families now have when their loved ones leave for work in law enforcement that they didn’t have a month ago,” Chicago FOP President Dean Angelo said, referring to the recent fatal shootings in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “And we are saying, put your kids at ease, don’t take that extra day at risk if you don’t have to.”

The flier said taking a stand would also “show unity and ... protest the continued disrespect of Chicago Police Officers.”

Obama boosts Clinton; Kaine mocks Trump The ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA – His own legacy on the line, President Barack Obama implored Americans to elect Hillary Clinton to the White House, casting her as a candidate who believes in the optimism that drives the nation’s democracy and warning against the “deeply pessimistic vision” of Republican Donald Trump.

“America is already great.

America is already strong,” he declared to cheering delegates Wednesday night at the Democratic convention. “And I promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on Donald Trump.”

For Democrats, the night was steeped in symbolism, the passing of the baton from a barrier-breaking president to a candidate trying to make history herself. It culminated with Clinton making a surprise appearance on stage to greet Obama with a long embrace, an almost unimaginable image eight years ago when they battled for the Democratic nomination.

Obama urged Americans to summon the hopefulness of that White House campaign, before recession deepened and new terror threats shook voters’ sense of security. He robustly vouched for Clinton’s readiness to finish the job he started, saying “no matter how daunting the odds, no matter how much people try to knock her down, she never, ever quits.”

Earlier Wednesday, Clinton’s running mate, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, introduced himself to the nation as a formidable foil to Trump in his own right. With folksy charm, he ridiculed Trump’s list of promises and imitated one of the GOP candidate’s favorite phrases.

He warned repeatedly Wednesday that the billionaire businessman is unprepared for the challenges that would await him in the Oval Office.

Trump fueled more controversy Wednesday when he encouraged Russia to meddle in the presidential campaign. On the heels of reports that Russia might have hacked Democratic Party emails, Trump said, “Russia, if you’re listening,” it would be desirable to see Moscow find and publish the thousands of emails Clinton said she deleted during her years as secretary of state.

Wednesday night’s Democratic lineup was aimed at emphasizing Clinton’s own national security credentials.

It was a significant shift in tone after two nights spent reintroducing Clinton to voters as a champion for children and families, and relishing in her historic nomination as the first woman to lead a major political party into the general election.

The convention’s third night also was a time for Democrats to celebrate Obama’s legacy. Vice President Joe Biden, who decided against running for president this year after the death of his son, called it a “bit-

tersweet moment.”

A son of Scranton, Pennsylvania, Biden appealed directly to the working class white voters who have been drawn to Trump’s populism, warning them against falling for false promises and exploitation of Americans’ anxieties.

“This guy doesn’t have a clue about the middle class,” he declared.

Kaine also picked up the traditional attacking role of the presidential ticket’s No. 2. He tore into Trump, mocking his pledges to build a wall along the Mexican border, asking why he has not released his tax returns and slamming his business record, including the now-defunct Trump University.

“Folks, you cannot believe one word that comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth,” Kaine said. “Our nation is too great to put it in the hands of a slick-talking, empty-promising, self-promoting, one-man wrecking crew.”

Liberals, particularly those who supported Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, have grumbled about Kaine being on the ticket, particularly because of his support for “fast track” approval of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact. Several delegates held up anti-TPP signs as he spoke.

Vladimir Putin is his economy’s worst enemy Russian President Vladimir Putin urgently needs to revive his country’s economy. His greatest obstacle will be himself.

While Americans argue about the extent of Russia’s intervention in the U.S. presidential election, Putin is battling a recession at home. To that end, he has recently focused on the ruble’s exchange rate: A weaker currency could boost the competitiveness of Russian exports, and also help balance a budget that depends heavily for revenues on the ruble value of hard-currency oil and gas exports.

Some forecasters expect the Russian central bank to do its part by lowering interest rates later this week.

Such tinkering at the margin, however, serves only to obscure an economic weakness more fundamental than the exchange rate, the price of oil or Western sanctions: Putin’s oppressive governance. His regime’s grasp on power depends too much on subverting the rule of law to enrich allies and punish opponents – an approach that has undermined a long list of businesses, from Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s Yukos oil company to, earlier this year, the RBC media group, which had the temerity to investigate Putin’s friends and family.

This attitude toward private property sets the tone for all of officialdom. Any entrepreneur can become the target of authorities, from fire inspectors to criminal investigators, who demand payment on the threat of fines or even imprisonment – or simply shut businesses down on behalf of better-connected competitors.

The disincentive to business is extreme: Why invest in the future if whatever you build can be taken away?

It’s thus no surprise that Russia’s economy is struggling.

Companies are sitting on cash, investment is down, and local producers have failed to expand despite the help of a ruble devalu-

ation and a ban on many Western imports. Output of food items that compete with imports was up only 1.8 percent in the first five months of 2016 compared with a year earlier. Economic growth is expected to remain below 2 percent for years to come, far short of the 5 percent-plus pace that prevailed for much of the 2000s.

With popular dissatisfaction growing and parliamentary elections coming in September, Putin recognizes the need for action. To generate ideas, he has created a council of economists including the respected former finance minister Alexei Kudrin. For all their differences, the economists agree on one thing: Russia cannot prosper without reforms aimed at strengthening property rights and easing the bureaucratic burdens on business.

This would require, for example, creating a truly independent judiciary and sharply reducing the number of entities that have the power to inspect and fine.

Sensible as that recommendation may be, acting on it would have far-reaching consequences for Putin’s regime. If Russia is to have an impartial justice system, then the Kremlin elite can’t trump up charges against perceived enemies or take assets away from businesspeople who support the opposition.

And if the opposition can’t so easily be silenced, Putin may have to submit to more competitive elections. In other words, reforming the economy requires fixing the political system as well.

It’s extremely hard to imagine that Putin, even with his still-high personal approval rating, would consider such a change – let alone mount the effort needed to transform a bureaucracy and justice system that have long since adapted to the abuse of power. Yet if he wants to address an economic malaise that could ultimately threaten to topple him, that is precisely what he must do.

Too much thinking might be a bad thing for Ill. voters Here’s a thank-you going out to Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan.

ISIS, police shootings, Hillary and Pokemon Go assaults just crowd brains so much and are so overwhelming that the people of Illinois just don’t need something else to concern themselves about.

Madigan won a round in ensuring the worries of state government continue to rest on his tiny shoulders.

Madigan’s lawyers, at least temporarily, stopped the Independent Map Amendment from going before voters in November. A Cook County judge on Wednesday accepted the Madigan argument that the Illinois Constitution only allows petition-driven amendments that affect “structural” or “procedural” changes to the Legislature.

Thanks to Mike, one less issue to ponder in November but a whole lot fewer choices at the polls in the future.

Here’s Gov. Bruce Rauner’s take on the matter: “A stunning two-thirds of incumbents will be running unopposed in November. That’s certainly not because the politicians in charge are doing such a good job in Springfield. It means the system is broken.”

Broken? How can he say that about such a well-oiled Chicago machine?

The map amendment people think voters should have a say in whether Madigan & Co. draw the state legislative districts to protect incumbents, or whether an independent panel should draw maps based on demographics and common interests.

They collected 564,000 Illinois voters’ signatures to get the amendment on the ballot and now are pledging to quickly put the issue before the Illinois Supreme Court, where they always expected the issue to be settled.

“Redistricting reform was specifically addressed by the framers of our constitution as a ‘critical’ area for citizen petition initiatives. We believe that the Illinois Supreme Court will side with Illinois voters and not deny citizens the opportunity to vote on this amendment,” Independent Maps Chairman Dennis FitzSimons said.

Bruce, Dennis, stop fighting Mike.

He knows what’s best for the people of Illinois.

But I don’t think he met the admittedly formidable challenge before him. He talked at great length about their relationship, but omitted the key fact about it that everyone knows: that he has been unfaithful to her.

He could have said, just once, that Hillary had put up with him more than he deserved. It would have been a powerful moment that lent credibility to everything else he said. He would have sounded like someone telling the truth, even the painful parts, instead of someone making a political sale.

But for whatever reason – pride?

– he didn’t do it. Instead, he skipped entirely over 1998, a year of American politics dominated by his affair with

Monica Lewinsky and his lies about it.

And even if Bill Clinton’s speech had been successful on its own terms, they may not have been the right terms for Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

The Democrats in Philadelphia are giving the impression that they don’t quite know how Donald Trump has gotten ahead of Clinton in the polls, or how to take him on. Should they say that America is doing much better than Trump says? Or that the state of the union is parlous and Clinton is the one who can make the necessary changes? The problem with the first strategy is that Americans are already deeply dissatisfied. The problem with the second, quite apart from Hillary Clinton’s own image as the establishment personified, is that she is obviously and inescapably running as a candidate of continuity with a twoterm incumbent.

But public opinion also presents Clinton with an opportunity. Most Americans dislike her, and most

Americans dislike Trump, leaving a lot of voters in the middle who dislike both.

But most Americans think she is qualified to be president, and he isn’t.

So instead of trying to get Americans to like her or the status quo better, Democrats can try to get voters to act on their pre-existing view of the candidates’ qualifications. Instead of trying to make voters happy, that is, they could try to make them scared: scared of the consequences of a Trump presidency.

That’s the case Hillary Clinton needs this convention to make. With the Democrats having spent the first half of it flailing, it’s increasingly clear she’ll have to do it herself.

A new normal for the U.S. economy – slow and steady

For the first time since 2009, all sectors of the economy are chugging along at normal rates: The housing industry pulled out of its nosedive, the government sector ended its downturn, and as of this quarter, the industrial recession is over.

Policy makers face a new challenge, building on an economy in which no major sector is in contraction. But first, the U.S. deserves some recognition for the feat it just accomplished.

The downturn from 2014 to 2016 was the first time in history when the U.S. had an industrial recession that didn’t turn into a broad-based recession.

This month showed that the industrial recession’s threat has passed. A key indicator for manufacturing industry sentiment, the ISM Manufacturing Index, is at its highest level in 16 months.

Job losses in the “mining and logging” industry, which includes energy, improved for the fourth straight month, indicating that the big job cuts in energy are probably behind us. Capacity utilization in the mining sector, after falling to its lowest level in history, has bounced sharply two months in a row.

United Rentals, an industrial equipment rental company, said in its quarterly earnings call this week that rental rates increased sequentially in June for the first time in 16 months.

While it’s unlikely that energy investment will boom any time soon, from a growth standpoint, going from negative to flat has just as big an impact on overall GDP growth as going from flat to positive.

A flat, or perhaps slightly growing, industrial sector in the second half of 2016 will be the strongest nudge to growth that the sector has contributed since early 2014.

One of the reasons the economic expansion has been frustratingly slow is that since 2009, there has almost always been some part of the economy either deleveraging or in recession. Households were deleveraging until 2012; their efforts to reduce debt were a drag on spending and growth, and made easy monetary policy less effective because households weren’t looking for credit.

Housing’s impact on GDP was volatile and contributed nothing through the beginning of 2011.

As the housing sector finally bottomed and households were finishing their deleveraging, the government recession began as stimulus turned to austerity in 2010. Government

retrenching persisted until 2014, another drag on growth. Finally, as austerity was abating, the economy got an energy shock as oil fell over the course of 18 months from $100 a barrel to $25 a barrel. The knock-on effects chilled the industrial sector and exports, another drag on growth just as it looked like the economy had some positive momentum.

Throughout all this tumult, the economy has continued to grow, labor market slack has fallen, wage growth has improved, and core inflation has gradually firmed.

The good news is for the time being there are no obvious candidates for another external shock to the U.S. economy.

Auto sales may have plateaued, multifamily residential construction may experience some mild contraction, and venture capital funding may dry up, causing a recession in Silicon Valley, but none of these factors is likely to cause a growth shock the way housing, government austerity and the industrial sector have.

Pessimists have called this current post-recession economy “the new normal.” They’re bemoaning an economy with less credit growth, lower economic growth, lower wage growth and lower inflation, as new financial regulation, slower popu-

lation growth, an aging society and risk aversion take their toll. But there are positives to this new normal as well.

The over-reliance on debt and financial leverage during the 1990s and 2000s created dependencies that set the economy up for contagion.

That excess leverage, and many of those dependencies, are largely gone, yet the fear of them remains. The “new normal” of the 2010s has so far entailed slower growth, but it has also meant that a bust in one industry need not take down the entire economy.

As we look ahead the latter part of 2016 and soon enough to 2017, simultaneous growth in the housing, government and industrial sectors may finally create enough momentum to bring back comparisons to the “old normal” of the booming 1990s.

Bill Clinton took on a daunting task on the Democratic convention’s second night: convincing Americans who have been watching his wife for a quarter-century that their picture of her is mistaken, that she is not the candidate of the status quo but “the best darn change-maker” he has ever known.

He told us about Hillary Clinton’s parents and her old friends from Illinois. He told us about how she put liner paper in all the drawers in Chelsea’s Stanford dorm room. He even told us about when her water broke.

He wanted to get Americans to see her as a human being, and an admirable one at that, and to erase the negative caricature that Republicans and many of Bernie Sanders’s supporters have drawn over and over.

That’s the speech he had to give.

He could hardly give a policy-heavy speech like the one he delivered at the 2012 Democratic convention, because this time he was talking about his

What to expect from MAC Media Day / 15

Daily Chronicle Sports Editor Eddie Carifio and sports reporter Jesse Severson spend their days covering the area’s sports scene. Occasionally, they give their viewpoints on those local sports.

In this installment of their Take 2 column, they talk about Huskie football as MAC Media Day is set for Thursday.

Carifio: If the column you wrote on Tuesday is any indication, it looks like you should familiarize yourself with the route to Detroit, as it looks like you may be making the trip to MAC Media Days for a long while.

If internet buzz can be trusted – and honestly, when can’t it – Northern Illinois should be in the Big 12.

More reasonable internet chatter – as if it needs to be more reasonable – thinks the Huskies should slide on into the American Athletic Conference if it looks to replace any teams it loses to the Big 12. Now, your view on the matter was pretty clear that the Huskies should stay put in the MAC until the other athletic programs can catch up and share the success that the football program has experienced the past decade or so. I am very inclined to agree with that.

But there’s a part of me that would really like to see the Huskies in a major conference. Sometimes, though, you gotta let the rational side of your brain win out.

Severson: Well, it’s going to be my third trip to Detroit in just less than a year – one day short of a full year, to be exact. But yeah, as a fan of certain sports teams, it’s hard not to fall victim of the echo chamber of other fans of that team. Listen, there is zero percent chance that NIU should or will be in the Big 12 anytime soon.

The move to the AAC is a little more interesting, but I just felt like NIU hasn’t proven itself in all of the athletic programs. The teams are consistently either middle of the pack or worse in the conference. There’s nobody that likes winning more than NIU athletic director Sean Frazier, and if they moved to the AAC, they wouldn’t be doing much winning for several years.

Also, I just feel like economically, with how NIU is doing dollars-wise as a university, it just doesn’t seem like a good fit with the conference.

Carifio: Where they are now, however, is a perfect fit. Or at least as close to perfect as you’re going to find. Good geography and competitive schools make a great conference, and #MACtion has that now.

So as the Huskies settle into the MAC, presumably, for a while longer, we get to gear up for MAC Media Day

for football. I may not have been here forever, but I know two things – Western Michigan and its golden boy coach will be picked to win the MAC West, and NIU won’t be any higher than third in the poll.

Severson: You know, everybody likes to make fun, but I’ve always enjoyed my experiences talking with Fleck. He’s a very charismatic guy and is really good to work with. But how would you view where the Huskies should be picked to finish? On one

hand, they have won the MAC West six times in a row, so it makes sense to keep betting on them to win it until they don’t. However, winning it seven times in a row is absolutely crazy.

Huskie fans won’t like to hear it, but eventually, they aren’t going to win the MAC West.

Carifio: The streak may not last forever, but the Huskies will be better than last year. A healthy (?) Drew Hare, the return of Shawun Lurry on the defense and an exciting running

back corps should more than make up for losing both coordinators.

Without knowing what Toledo, WMU, or anyone else is bringing back to the table, I’m not comfortable making a pick – that’s why you vote in the poll and not me. But from what I know at this moment, I would pick the Huskies to win the division.

Severson: Yeah, the coordinators are new, but I don’t think many Huskie fans are shedding any tears about not bringing back offensive coordinator Bob Cole, he didn’t appear to be well-liked, to put it nicely. I’m actually really excited to see what the young new coordinators – Kevin Kane on defense and Mike Uremovich on offense – can do.

But with MAC Media Day upon us now, it means two things: we’re getting closer to the start of the season finally getting here and, most importantly, I get to ask Hare and Lurry absolutely stupid, absurd questions.

It’s time to find out if anybody on the team believes in aliens.

CHICAGO – Javier Baez hit a tiebreaking two-run homer deep into Wrigley’s Field’s left bleachers in the seventh, Addison Russell added a grand slam in a five-run eighth and the Chicago Cubs beat the White Sox 8-1 on Wednesday night.

Jason Hammel (10-5) allowed one run and five hits while striking out seven in seven innings. Hector Rondon pitched a perfect eighth, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a 1-2-3 ninth – striking out Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia – in his Cubs debut.

Baez went deep on a full-count pitch against Anthony Ranaudo (1-1) to chase the right-hander in his White Sox debut.

Ranaudo didn’t allow a hit until Kris Bryant’s solo homer with one out in the sixth tie the score 1-1. Bryant’s 26th homer matched his total last season when he was NL Rookie of the Year.

After Ben Zobrist’s RBI double in the eighth, Russell followed two hitters later with his 12th homer to help the Cubs end a two-game slide and snap the White Sox’s four-game winning streak.

Ranaudo allowed three runs and two hits – both homers – in 62/3 innings and smacked an opposite-field homer in the fifth for his first major league hit to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead.

Chapman had 20 saves in 21 chances this season with the Yankees before the Cubs acquired the hard-throwing lefty on Monday for a package of prospects.

The 6-foot-7 Ranaudo, acquired from Texas on May 12, was 5-3 with 3.20 ERA at Triple-A Charlotte in 13 starts. In two games with the Rangers this season, the 26-year-old righty was 1-0, but had a 17.18 ERA and walked eight – including five in a May 10 game against the White Sox. He was better than that in his 10th major league start and 14th appearance.

The White Sox beat the Cubs 5-4 and 3-0 in the first two games of the crosstown series. The fourth game is Thursday night.

Ranaudo’s homer was the first by a White Sox pitcher since Mark Buehrle went deep on June 14, 2009, at Milwaukee.

Offense aims to improve

aarkush@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS – Rather than focusing on the large offensive void created by the departures of former Pro Bowlers Matt Forte and Martellus Bennett, and offensive line stalwarts Matt Slauson and Jermon Bushrod, the Bears reported to camp Wednesday excited about a youth movement ahead.

After all, they finished 23rd in scoring a season ago, largely due to attrition, and the Bears are unsurprisingly selling the jarring changes as a potential positive.

Sure, Jay Cutler conceded Forte, the Bears’ No. 2 all-time leading rusher, is irreplaceable – “you can’t [replace him],” said Cutler candidly. “Not in a year anyway,” – but it likely wasn’t by accident he started the next sentence by referencing a “young” running back corps, led by 24-year-old Jeremy Langford.

“I was looking at the roster a couple of weeks ago and I feel like there’s been a major shift in experience – especially on the offensive side,” said Cutler. “I’m at 11 [years in the league] and then you look down, there’s a couple of nines, a couple of eights and mostly five and under, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

“I think a new talent and new guys in the building, there’s new energy and new attitude. I’ve em-

braced it. I’ve enjoyed it. I think the coaching staff’s done a great job of getting all these young guys up to speed. It’s a good group right now.”

Chicago has gotten younger up front, the first area Ryan Pace cited when asked why the Bears’ offense can improve despite the myriad production lost, where it needed six different O-line combinations in 2015, and eight the year prior, after being one of three NFL clubs to start the same five for 16 games in 2013.

Kyle Long admitted there will undoubtedly be some growing pains, but he’ll attempt to spread the wisdom he learned as a rookie starter with guys like Cody Whitehair and Hroniss Grasu.

“Yeah, it’s something I’ve had to deal with, said Long. “Everybody’s been a rookie at one point if you’ve been in the league, so to have a guy in his shoes come in, highly drafted guy who understands the pressure on him, he wants to make sure that everything’s taken care of on his end prior to getting to camp, so he’s done a good job of staying on top of workouts and everything.”

The Bears could have five new Week One starters, but for all the changes, from Whitehair to Jordan Howard to undrafted tight end Ben Braunecker, it’s the guys who remain that could help this offense ascend.

“I think it will be good hav-

ing Kevin White back healthy and Alshon stay healthy this season,” Pace said. “Those are going to be important things – the health of our receivers.”

Pace, Cutler and Tracy Porter didn’t bother holding back their excitement with White, who they say is healthy, hungry and just started flashing his dazzling ability this offseason after a redshirt rookie campaign.

Indeed, a run-first offense will be maximized if Jeffery and White are healthy and creating mismatches, favorable fronts and, most importantly, explosive plays.

“I thought that was pretty seamless,” Cutler said of the transition from Adam Gase to Dowell Loggains.

“We had some new guys out there, especially up front, kind of getting those guys caught up a little bit.

“Getting Alshon back for the minicamp I thought was big for us.

He had a great attitude, he was happy to be out there with us and Kevin made some steps coming off that year of injuries, getting him back into the offense, you know the normal guys were making plays. So it wasn’t that much different than the year before.”

The offensive recipe might not change under Loggains, but the ingredients are definitely different.

We’ll find out soon whether different is better.

BOURBONNAIS – Training camp is an opportunity to see change and progress. It’s a time for that magic word that all 32 teams have, ‘hope.’ For the Bears, the most noticeable change that can inspire optimism for improvement that will be observed is in the front seven on defense.

Enter Danny Trevathan, Jerrell Freeman, Akiem Hicks, Leonard Floyd and Jonathan Bullard. Welcome back Eddie Goldman, Pernell McPhee, Lamarr Houston and Willie Young.

Just ask Jay Cutler about the revamped group. He noticed the difference without pads on in OTAs. “I felt it was night and day. A lot more speed over there,” he said Wednesday as the Bears reported to training camp at Olivet Nazarene University. “A different attitude. A different swagger to them, if you will, especially the two inside guys. I mean those guys are flying around, they’re making the football team better.”

Trevathan has impressed his teammates not only with his play on the field, but with his mentality. He doesn’t talk like someone who got a new contract after winning a Super Bowl, so get used to it, as he explains the type of leadership he brings.

“I’m all about attitude and hustle and just playing ball,” Trevathan said.

“I don’t care what happened before.

You can always make up for it, just go 100 miles per hour and have fun. This game is short. Your attitude carries over to the team. There’s a lot of time when a team’s down you put your head down. I hate that. Even if we’re down we’re going to fight until the end.”

The worst-kept secret in Bourbonnais the next two weeks will be the Bears’ need to improve on last year’s takeaway total of only 17, and that’s where the front seven can help.

“We’re all excited about that group and we all know pressure on the quarterback can equate to turnovers and help the secondary,” said Ryan Pace.

“I’m fired up about that going forward.

We’ve got all different types of rushers, which is exciting now with the power rushers and the speed rushers. We can get some push inside with those big defensive linemen, so that is good to see.”

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. – Henrik Stenson took his silver claret jug and headed straight for Switzerland to play in a charity event organized by Sergio Garcia. It turned out to be the perfect occasion to deliver an important message to the host.

Stenson was 40 when he won the British Open at Royal Troon. He had paid his dues with a trio of close calls in the majors. It was his time.

Garcia has paid even more.

It started when he was a 19-year-old trying to chase down Tiger Woods at Medinah. He played in the final group with Woods at Bethpage Black and Royal Liverpool. He twice was beaten in the final holes by Padraig Harrington at Carnoustie and Oakland Hills.

“Henrik, when I saw him Monday at my event in Switzerland, he said: ‘You know, I’m 40, you’re 36. You still have probably 16 more before you get there,’” Garcia said Wednesday on the eve of the PGA Championship.

“So at the end of the day, if you stay healthy, you still can give yourself a lot of chances here and there. That’s my goal, to keep giving myself chances and hopefully take as many as possible in the coming years.”

Stenson’s victory has shifted the focus to Garcia, perhaps more than any other player in the final major of the year, particularly in a season of firsttime major champions – Danny Willet at the Masters, Dustin Johnson at the U.S. Open and Stenson.

“It just shows that you’ve got to keep on trying,” Stenson said. “It was nice to see Dustin win at the U.S. Open.

He’s had some close calls and some heartbreaking calls in the last four years, five years. You’ve got to keep putting yourself in position. And the more times you do that, that’s what gives you chances for it to happen.”

Lee Westwood is another player on the dubious list of “best to have never won a major.” The 43-year-old Englishman had a chance at the U.S. Open, British Open and Masters in successive years and he is among two players – Luke Donald is the other – to reach No. 1 in the world without ever having won a major. Rickie Fowler at No. 7 in the world and Garcia (No. 10) are the only players in the top 10 who have not won a major.

Garcia is different, because he has

been at a high level for so long.

Just not high enough.

The Spaniard is no longer as temperamental, at times petulant, as he was earlier in his career Sergio Garcia when he accomplished so much at early age that he expected so much more. He complained about the breaks Woods got from the weather in the 2002 U.S. Open. His worst moment was in the 2007 British Open at Carnoustie, when he suggested he was playing “more than the field” because he couldn’t catch a break.

He has thrown clubs. He has kicked shoes.

Now, it almost seems as though Garcia is resigned that his career could end without a major, even though he has such a long road ahead of him. Yes, he is surprised to have not won a major as he approaches two decades playing them.

He said it would have bothered him five or 10 years ago, but no longer.

“I understand how difficult it is to win every week,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a major. It doesn’t matter where it is. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the U.S., in Asia, in Europe, in Africa.

It is tough to win. So that’s great for the game of golf, and the only thing I can do is just keep giving myself chances and just wait for it.

“Hopefully, it will happen,” he said.

“If it doesn’t happen, it’s not going to change my life. I’m not going to go in a cave and stay there until I die.”

Golf goes in cycle, and maybe this one favors Garcia.

In only three years dating to 1960 have the four Grand Slam events been won by players who previously didn’t have a major, most recently in 2011 and 2003. The last four major champions dating to Jason Day last year at the PGA Championship had never won a major.

“I would love to make it five in a row,” Garcia said.

Also, all but one of the last 12 winners of the PGA Championship had won earlier in the year. Garcia won the AT&T Byron Nelson.

The tiniest smile appeared on Garcia’s face when he was introduced Wednesday as playing in his 18th PGA Championship. Was it really that long ago when he closed his eyes and hit that shot out of the tree in 1999 at Medinah to finish one shot behind Woods?

Damon’s company is taking steps to address diversity crisis

att Damon is taking steps to address the diversity crisis in Hollywood through his and Ben Affleck’s production company, Pearl Street Films, and collaboration with the people behind the Media, Diversity and Social Change Initiative at USC’s Annenberg School. They’re the latest high-profile names in the industry who are throwing their weight behind the goal of inclusion, including J.J. Abrams and Ryan Murphy.

Damon got a wakeup call with the latest season of HBO’s “Project Greenlight,” a reality show about the production of an independent movie that Damon and Affleck launched in 2001. What had always been a somewhat under-the-radar look at the trials of making an indie hit a cultural nerve last year with its focus on a film from a white male director, Jason Mann, about mainly white, wealthy characters. It was even called “The Leisure Class.”

On top of that, Damon got some heat for a conversation with producer Effie Brown that was perceived to be racially insensitive. He apologized, but it was clear that the show had become, intentionally or not, representative of an old-guard mentality in a year when diverse representation in film was dominating the conversation.

In response, the team went back to look at who entered the “Project Greenlight” Facebook contest, which allowed filmmakers to submit a three-minute short film for consideration as an upcoming project on the show. In order to enter, contestants were required to have a valid Facebook ID, be over 18 years old, and not be a “professional director.”

There would then be a public Facebook vote on the entries, but a panel made the final decision.

Damon assumed their system had cast the widest net possible for submission but was surprised at the results: only 2 percent of entries came from people of color and 8 percent from women, he said.

“That shocked us, because that wasn’t the spirit with which we put it out there. It was like ‘come one, come all.’ But it was predominantly white men who showed up and entered,” Damon said in an interview. “That was a real lesson for us.”

So the Pearl Street team decided it was time to get together with the folks responsible for the Annenberg study, which has detailed the extent of the crisis of representation in the entertainment industry both in front of and behind the camera, to figure out how they could change things.

“They were like, ‘it’s crazy that you reached out to us because we identified you as two of the five people in this business who could actually move the needle if you change this stuff in writing,’” Damon said. “We were looking for real ideas – practical things that could help.”

One idea that took hold was putting clauses in contracts to make it a priority to look at all the roles on a film and hire with an eye toward equity.

“I’d rather be judged on our actions. It’s a cool opportunity and we’ll see where it goes.”

“If you actually codify that, there can be demonstrable changes,” Damon said.

As opposed to merely reacting to outside influences, Pearl Street and several other production companies in Hollywood are trying to change things at the very core of the creative process.

At his Bad Robot production company, J.J. Abrams earlier this year implemented a policy to ensure that people are submitted for film jobs proportionally to their U.S. representation.

“It’s important to us that the people who are telling the stories and the people who are in front of the camera, wherever possible, are representative of what the country looks like. It doesn’t mean that there’s a quota or that there are rules we have to abide by,” Abrams said recently. “We’ll make mistakes, we’ll screw up and we’ll keep trying things.

There’s no one right way to do this. But to me, the benefit is to the audience, the people who will start to see stories that won’t just feel like the same old, same old.”

As for “Project Greenlight,” while not getting a fifth season on HBO, the idea of assisting emerging filmmakers has evolved into the digital space. Project Greenlight Digital Studios has hosted a number of contests since launching seven months ago aimed at helping more diverse voices get a start.

For his part, Damon doesn’t want to put the cart before the horse. The initiative is still in the very early stages as they craft language to use in contracts.

“I’d rather be judged on our actions,” he said.

“It’s a cool opportunity and we’ll see where it goes.”

The band, directed by Kirk Lundbeck, will perform at 8 p.m. in the Dee Palmer Band Shell in Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

Goodman is a graduate of Sycamore High School and Northern Illinois University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in both music and music education.

She has taught choir and general music in the Mt. Morris, Oregon and Sycamore school districts. An accomplished pianist, she also has served as a private voice teacher, musical theater camp instructor, and accompanist.

Goodman is active in theater, having both directed and held starring roles in numerous plays and musicals.

She has appeared most recently with the Stage Coach Players in

their productions of “9-5,” “Urinetown,” “Annie” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

She will direct their upcoming music production of “Do Black Terri Crain Patent Leather Shoes Goodman Really Reflect Up?” in August.

Goodman will sing Gershwin’s “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “The Way We Were” by Marvin Hamlisch and Barbara Roger Streisand’s signature Ackert song “People.”

Ackert earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from the Oberlin Conservatory, a master’s degree in performance and composition from Northern Illinois University, and a music degree from the U.S. Navy School of Music.

He is skilled in the entire woodwinds family, with emphasis on the clarinet and saxophone. He studied with clarinet professionals Ben Stoller, George Waln, Thomas

Thompson, Jerome Stowell, Wilbur Smith and Leon Russianoff.

His big band performance experience includes the Eddie Peabody USO show, Johnny Kay Orchestra, Shannanigans II, Shannanigans Show Band and the Glen Gould Orchestra Premiere, and as member in the backup bands at Rockford’s Metro Center for Bob Hope, George Burns, Linda Carter, Dion Warwick and the Pointer Sisters.

Ackert’s first performance in the DeKalb Municipal Band was the summer of 1963. He will solo on “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” and “Let It Go” from the 2013 animated film “Frozen.”

The band concert will open with an unusual work, “650 East Concert March.”

Composers Wayne Oldham and Jack Hale titled this contemporary piece in honor of the Christian Brothers Band of Christian Brothers College in Memphis, which at that time was located at 650 E. Parkway.

“Ballyhoo March” by Paul La Valle will be a premiere performance in Hopkins Park. The band’s principal

trombonist, Gene Vanden Bosch, created this arrangement of the 2002 Royal Airs version originally done

by Col. Truman Crawford of the Marine Corps drum and bugle corps.

The nationalistic tune “Finlandia,” by Jean Sibelius, became a symbol of the Finnish nation. It is a sound display of the characteristically rugged Finnish people in the face of Russian oppression.

Former conductor of the Municipal Band Dee Palmer once said, “As long there have been concerts in Hopkins Park, audiences have enjoyed the thrilling and majestic sounds of Finlandia.”

Sounds of the Big Bands, Chabrier’s “Espana Rhapsody” and Leroy Anderson’s “Fiddle Faddle” and more music are all part of Tuesday’s program.

This is the seventh year that CCT has produced a Penguin Project show. The show is directed by Busby, assisted by two assistant directors, Lynnae Ihm and Jeff Hall, and music director Diana Johnson.

“It’s an incredible feat of teamwork,” Joe King, Penguin Project coordinator, said in a news release. “Over the course of every show we see amazing things as the patience, support and encouragement of our mentors brings out skills in our artists that many would never dream existed. It is magical to see it all come to life on stage.”

The Kishwaukee Valley Art League will feature members’ art creations using upcycled materials at its Aug. 4 meeting. KVAL presents a challenge to member artisans throughout the year, alternating with an artist demonstration at each monthly meeting. Indian Valley Theatre will hold auditions for its upcoming production, “Over the River and Through the Woods,” by Joe DiPietro, from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8.

Auditions will be at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich.

The adult cast consists of three men and three women. Auditions will be cold reads from the script. No appointment is necessary and IVT membership is not required to audition.

The show is directed by Rich Bryan. He directed this same show several years ago.

Children’s Community Theatre’s Penguin Project, which puts children and young adults at center stage, will present “Shrek Jr. The Musical,” Sept. 8 through 11 at DeKalb High School.

“Shrek Jr.” is based on the Oscarwinning DreamWorks Animation film. “Shrek, The Musical,” is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there’s more to the story than meets the ears. The show tells the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue.

This musical features songs such as “I’m a Believer,” “Big, Bright Beautiful World,” and “Freak Flag.”

What makes this production unique is that every role in the show is performed by a child or young adult who has some sort of disability (autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, etc.).

Nearly all of those individuals are assisted by a peer mentor. Those artist-mentor pairs have been working together since May preparing for the show, with each learning every song, dance and line, so that during the show the mentor can step in and assist their artist as needed.

Headlining the show as Shrek is Jacob Morton, mentored by Merri Bork.

Morton has previously wowed crowds playing The Beast in the Penguin Project production of “Beauty and the Beast” and Jafar in “Aladdin.” Shrek’s sidekick, Donkey, will be played by Jacob Ihm, whose past Penguin roles include Tevia in “Fiddler on the Roof” and Sebastian in “The Little Mermaid.”

Princess Fiona is portrayed by another perennial Penguin headliner, Jenny Busby, who has appeared as Ariel in the “Little Mermaid.” Lord Farquadd is played by Cody Marbutt, mentored

by Megan Meyer. Members of Shrek’s family are: Mama Ogre, Sadie Ihm (Olivia Saucedo); Papa Ogre, Matt Slade (Gabby Selenis); and Little Shrek, Zachary McGinnis (Reese Gall). Little Fiona, played by Grace Turk (Amelia Simone), and Teen Fiona, played by Erin Steele, (Noelle Simone,) dream about the future as Fiona grows up.

Sclerotherapy is better for larger veins, but it involves needles and injections. Laser therapy can be as effective for smaller veins, but it may result in loss of skin pigment. In studies comparing the treatments, sclerotherapy is more likely to be successful.

Dear Reader: Superficial leg veins, sometimes called “spider veins,” occur when tiny veins appear just below the surface of the skin, causing red, blue or purple discolorations. Spider veins get their name from the shape of the discolorations. Some cases of spider veins can be quite small; others are more noticeable. They might make you feel self-conscious, but they are harmless.

Spider veins are a sign there are abnormalities in the deeper veins of the legs.

Those deep veins have little valves in them.

Blood in the veins of the legs is returning from the legs to the heart. When we are sitting or standing, gravity is pulling the blood downward, away from the heart. The valves prevent gravity from doing that.

As we get older, the valves become less effective. The extra blood gravity pulls down into the leg veins causes the pressure in the veins to rise. Ultimately, that increased pressure swells the tiny veins beneath the skin – leading to spider veins.

Spider veins are most common on the thighs, ankles and calves. They are more common in women than men, and they can run in families. Some cases are related to pregnancy, use of birth control pills or weight gain. Spider veins may be permanent, or they may disappear on their own, especially if they are caused by pregnancy or certain medications.

Spider veins do not require treatment for any medical reason. Treatment usually is done for cosmetic reasons only.

A bridge player never knows everything. But to defend well, it helps to have the full arsenal under control: leads, signals, discards, and counting of winners, losers and highcard points.

In this deal, how can the defenders defeat two spades?

West, since his opponents had stopped in an eight-card fit at the two-level, might have made a second takeout double. This would have risked ending in three hearts in a 4-3 fit, but here it would have worked well because three diamonds was makable.

West leads the club ace. East drops the seven, starting a high-low with a doubleton. West cashes his club king and continues with the club queen. What should East discard?

East is making an attitude signal, and it is preferable to throw an encouraging card. Here, East signals with the heart seven.

West, who knows this is high, shifts to his heart three (low from an honor). East wins with his ace and returns the heart two. Even if South cleverly plays his queen smoothly, West should win and lead his last heart, which East ruffs to defeat the contract.

Now for the tough question: How does West know East is out of hearts?

Because if he had begun with A-7-52, he would have led back the five at trick five, the higher of his remaining cards.
