Confessions of the electronically dumb POLL YESTERDAY’S

Have you ever said something that you shouldn’t have? Something that made you feel icky and want to purge? I have.

I have something to confess to my husband. He is not going to be happy nor will I be exactly vindicated, but at least I can get it off my chest.

May my husband and readers remember, I am only human.

Here we go. I, Rebecca Hirst, was the one who screwed up the computer monitor. I then lied. I blamed it on my daughter, Hannah Jo. I can’t tell you why I did it. I have no excuse.

The only viable reason I have for lying is the fact that I am electronically dumb.

I will now explain what really happened.

My reminiscing mind wandered to our family vacation to Punta Cana last summer. I looked on Facebook to recapture the moments.

There were no photos to reminisce. So I riffled through all the crap on our desk and found the flash drive with the photos.

Being the ding dong I am, I couldn’t figure out where in the world to stick this flash drive in my husband’s computer. I just start sticking the drive in anything that remotely looked like a port.

It didn’t work. Along the way I ended up making the one screen start flashing like a bar code. I was super freaked out. Reluctant to tell my husband what happened, I kept my mouth shut.

In the meantime, I hoped and prayed the monitor would magically fix itself. This way I had no explaining to do about another dumb thing I did to the computer. Waiting didn’t

help for anything, it only started flashing more rapidly.

I cringed, as my husband walked through the door returning from work. We headed to the park with Hannah Jo before dinner. After dinner the crime was discovered.

Getting Hannah Jo ready for bed, I heard some grumbling from my husband. I came downstairs to find him fiddling with the mess I created.

He said, “Did Hannah Jo play with the computer today? Why is the screen messed up?”

I replied, “I was only in the bathroom for a moment and I noticed the screen was flashing.” And that was the end of the conversation.

Just to save face, I threw my own daughter under the bus. Shame on me! Bad mama. I know it seems unjustifiable but I am hoping I can reconcile my indiscretion with this article.

I am sorry I lied to my dear husband. Also, I am apologizing to my innocent daughter for blaming the mess on you. Years from now, I hope I can be forgiven.

PARIS – Experts who’ve followed the leak of Democratic National Committee documents said they believe the party’s claim that Moscow had a hand in the hack, lending weight to the extraordinary allegation that the Kremlin is trying to tamper with the U.S. presidential contest.

“You’re left with all the signs pointing to Moscow,” said Matt Tait, a U.K.-based cybersecurity consultant who has put in about 20 hours combing through the leaked DNC documents.

Tait and others invoke several categories of evidence. The first was provided by threat intelligence firm CrowdStrike, an Irvine, California, company that was hired by the Democrats to clean out the party’s network.

It delivered a report last month identifying Russia’s intelligence services as being behind two separate electronic break-ins at the DNC. The second category of evidence was provided by electronic fingerprints on some of the documents suggesting the files had been run through Russian language-configured machines.

Most convincing for Tait was evidence that the internet infrastructure tied the DNC hackers to a separate campaign that targeted Germany’s parliament last year.

In May, Germany’s domestic intelligence chief took the unusual step of publicly blaming that attack on Moscow, saying the Kremlin wasn’t just spying – it was gearing up for sabotage.

Community flocks to annual Fourth Street Fun Fest in DeKalb

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Whether it was climbing aboard a city fire truck, perusing informational booths, playing games for prizes or snacking on some summertime treats, the annual Fourth Street Family Fun Fest offered something for everyone in the families who attended.

“We try to do something to provide a fun family event – as the name says – in the South Fourth Street area,” said Matt Duffy, executive director of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. “The idea is to try to bring people down to the area to show what’s down here.”

It was held in the DeKalb School District 428 education center parking lot on Fourth Street.

The two-hour event was packed with games and prizes for kids, but also information booths for parents to learn about some of the area businesses and nonprofit organizations. It was sponsored by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the city, Duffy said.

This was the second year that Seville Spearman attended with her five children, who ranged in age from infant to 9 years old. The fest was held right outside the doorsteps where she picks two of her little ones up from day care.

This time around, Spearman said, it was interesting to learn about one of the construction trucks on display that the DeKalb Public Works department uses. “[The fest] is beneficial because it lets people know what’s out there. It brings interaction between the police department and the community and the fire department,” Spearman said.

“It brings everybody together. It’s pretty cool.”

Community awareness is one of the reasons that Safe Passage had a booth at the event, said Taylor Lupo, who works at the shelter for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. She said often people who live in town don’t know about all of the social services that may be available to them – many of them free of charge.

“We like to come to these events mainly because we want to get our name out there,” said Lupo, who is a prevention specialist with the nonprofit organization. “We want people to know that we’re there and be able to receive our services if they’re needed. Even if it’s not a survivor that specifically needs us, we want family and

The festival also gave the DeKalb Park District an opportunity for the public to preview some of the new and revised programs that are upcoming this fall. Rachel Schmit, the park district’s recreation supervisor, said that brochures aren’t ready for distribution yet, but representatives were on hand to spread the word about what’s new – and pass out bubbles, sunglasses, water, water bottles and more.

The DeKalb police and fire departments also were present, along with representatives from neighborhood day care centers and more.

Tuesday’s event is part of a string of entertainment on tap for Kishwaukee Fest. The nine days of festivities kicked off last Saturday with an outdoor movie night. It will culminate this weekend with a wine tasting and baconpalooza event Saturday. D-428 official hears residents’ questions Community seeks answers with spike in taxes looming

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Residents still have questions about District 428’s plans to restructure its debt ahead of a potential property tax spike.

Superintendent of Business and Finance Andrea Gorla addressed some of those questions at a public DeKalb Kiwanis Club meeting Monday as part of a wider effort to bring clarity to issues surrounding the topic.

Bonds totaling $110 million were approved by referendum between 2008 and 2011 to finance, repurpose and renovate the district’s schools. Debt payments for the bonds, which were approved by voters before the 2008 housing market crash, were based on projected home assessment values and were set to increase with those values.

However, many housing development projects have since stalled or gone bankrupt and home values have fallen, leaving property owners facing a possible tax spike unless the district restructures its bonds. The district will have the option to extend debt payments starting in 2018 so homeowners will face minimal property tax increases, but stretching the payments could

mean millions more in interest payments for the district and taxpayers over the long haul, Gorla said.

Property owner Jim Mason said he thinks the school district borrowed the money too soon, an idea echoed by others in attendance.

“Why did you borrow $110 million when there was no concrete in the ground?” Mason said.

Gorla said the decision to borrow the funds was community driven.

“It was the groundswell from the community that said we need a high school and we need another elementary building,” Gorla said. “That came from the community. That didn’t come from any one person saying, ‘We want this.’ ” A proposed 1 percent countywide sales tax is another option that could abate debt payments and minimize property tax increases, but the district is unsure exactly how much money it would receive, Gorla said. Estimates show the proposed tax could bring DeKalb School District 428 about $5.9 million annually.

Five DeKalb County school districts, representing the majority of public school children, want to put a referendum before voters to add 1 percentage point to the county’s sales tax rate in an effort to raise millions of dollars for capital projects and bond payments.

However, the DeKalb County Board has opposed the idea and county officials are concerned that the special sales tax increase could jeopardize airline fuel sales and mean a loss of up

District 428 superintendent of business and finance to $3 million in county revenue.

Both American and United have subsidiary offices in Sycamore and threatened to leave the county if the school facility tax makes it on the ballot, county officials have said. By buying their jet fuel in DeKalb County rather than Cook County, they pay a lower sales tax rate and also receive tens of millions in sales tax rebates through an agreement with Sycamore.

In return, the city receives hundreds of thousands in revenue each year.

The county government also receives about $2.5 million to $3 million a year in proceeds from sales tax on the jet fuel. The airlines’ tax rebate agreement with Sycamore is being challenged in court by the Regional Transportation Authority, which accused the airlines of setting up “sham offices” in Sycamore to dodge taxes.

The school district has been study-

ing options to restructure its debt service for several years, Gorla said.

Debt service payments have been fairly level, but are set to jump in 2017.

The average homeowner paid about $339 in property taxes toward debt payments for the school in 2014, but that could jump to $515 in 2017 and be up to $653 in 2028 if the bonds aren’t restructured.

Bonds were originally structured anticipating climbing home assessment values, which hasn’t been the reality. If things stayed the same, debt payments would drop off after 2028, but recommended options include stretching the debt for more than a decade, which could keep property taxes level for homeowners but could cost the district millions in the long term.

Both options on the table include extending debt payments to stabilize increases in property taxes.

John Smith, who helps arrange speakers for the DeKalb Kiwanis Club and serves as the group’s media liaison, said the topic is important to the community.

“The Kiwanis Club is a community service club and one of our precepts is the education of members to benefit the community,” Smith said.

Gorla has spoken on the topic in front of other groups, as well. She said the presentations help clear up misconceptions about the district’s debt and its path forward. The school board has yet to make a final decision on the debt restructuring issue, she said.

DeKalb council raises video gambling terminal fees

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Aldermen had a slight change of heart this week, deciding to charge more for video gambling terminal fees yet sparing local nonprofit organizations a bit.

The permit fee for an initial video gambling terminal is now $500 a device, up from $25. Machine owners will now pay $250 for each one to renew the permit each year. City officials expect that increased fees will generate more than $30,000 in additional revenue.

Dan Gallagher told aldermen during public comments Monday that the money the nonprofit veterans organization gets from its terminal are used for charitable work.

“Everything that we earn, we give back to the community,” Gallagher said.

He explained that the organization donates to local youth sports, helps veterans in distress and buys 2,000 flags to pass out on Veterans Day, among other benevolence.

“If you raise [the fee], we’re going to have to make some cuts,” Gallagher said. “Without these machines, we’d close up and have our meetings in the library.”

His comments seemed to sway aldermen, since there was a motion made to change the proposed fees to give a break to organizations that register with the state attorney general’s office as a charitable organization, are organized as a nonprofit and are tax-exempt through the IRS. The final decision allows nonprofits to pay $500 a terminal for the initial fee, but only $25 each to renew.

City officials pointed out that, to date, only four organizations – including the American Legion – qualify for that status. The city attorney advised that, should there be an influx in organizations that meet the criteria for a discount, aldermen could revisit the issue and make changes.

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Five-year-old Olivia Benson made a new friend Tuesday: Her name is Esther, and she has four legs, a soft belly and prickly quills – just to name a few of her best qualities.

Lake Villa-based company Animal Quest stopped by the DeKalb Public Library on Tuesday to introduce 10 animals, including Esther, a 4-yearold African pygmy hedgehog, to kids participating in a summer reading program. Some got to pet the more docile animals throughout the afternoon. “[Esther] felt like a toothpick,” Benson said after the show Tuesday.

Since married couple Steve and Jessica Reedy founded Animal Quest in 2011, they have bought and rescued more than 80 animals, which they show at venues throughout Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana.

Youth Services Director Theresa Winterbauer knows animals draw a big crowd, and uses the show to get kids into the library and excited about reading, she said.

“They get introduced to things that they might not see otherwise. Especially the younger ones. It takes a while to get them into the zoo,” Winterbauer said. “It’s educational as well as fun.”

As kids rattled off questions about when an animal might bite them, and what each one eats for dinner, Steve Reedy had all the answers ready to go.

“Every animal that has a mouth can bite,” he warned.

The children learned that hens also are chickens, and to stay away from hissing snakes. As they left, animal books upstairs were on display and ready to satisfy their new curiosities.

“The main thing is to bring people to the library and to celebrate summer reading,” Winterbauer said.

This summer, more than 1,000 kids signed up for the youth summer reading program, and Animal Quest’s visit packed the room with kids buzzing about both their reading logs and the giant rabbit on stage.

“I’m trying to make a difference,” Reedy said. “A lot of kids don’t really know much about animals, just a lot of weird assumptions, myths and legends.”

CHICAGO – Prosecutors and attorneys for Rod Blagojevich sharply disagree in new court filings about whether the imprisoned former Illinois governor has taken enough responsibility for his crimes to justify a reduced sentence when he’s resentenced next month.

Additional arguments filed around midnight Monday come two weeks after the defense asked U.S. District Judge James Zagel to slash the original 14-year sentence to five years, meaning the 59-year-old Blagojevich could theoretically go free in months with the four-plus years he’s already served.

Prosecutors, who want the same 14year term Zagel imposed in 2011, said in their new filing that Blagojevich has never accepted he broke the law, including by trying to trade an appointment to the U.S. Senate seat once occupied by President Barack Obama for campaign cash.

Resentencing on Aug. 9 was mandated after a 2015 appeals court decision tossed five of Blagojevich’s 18 corruption convictions on the grounds his attempts to trade an appointment to the Senate seat for an appointment in the Obama administration did not break the law.

Dozens of gang members indicted in Chicago area, Ind.

CHICAGO – Dozens of members of the Latin Kings street gang in the Chicago area and northern Indiana have been arrested on charges of a federal racketeering conspiracy that included arson, beatings, extortion, witness tampering and the attempted murder of a police officer, according to indictments unsealed Tuesday.

Those indicted included leaders, treasurers and enforcers of lucrative Latin Kings chapters. Law enforcement officials told reporters at a news conference in Chicago that the arrests are a blow to the “Almighty Latin King Nation,” whose membership extends nationwide.

6-year-old Chicago girl home after being shot in stomach

CHICAGO – A 6-year-old girl who was shot in the stomach while sitting on her front porch last week has been welcomed home from the hospital.

Tacarra Morgan received cake and a new bicycle Monday when she arrived in her West Englewood neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. There also were dozens of balloons and boxes of gifts.

Tacarra was with her mother and grandmother July 19 when someone stepped out of a car and fired about two dozen shots. A bullet struck the girl as she tried to get inside the house. She is one of several children struck by bullets in Chicago this year.

She was released from Comer Children’s Hospital on Monday. Chicago police officers and relatives decorated the front of her house with pink ribbons and a “Welcome Home Tacarra” sign.

Last charges dropped in case over Planned Parenthood videos

HOUSTON – Texas prosecutors on Tuesday dropped the last remaining charges against two California anti-abortion activists who made undercover videos of themselves trying to buy fetal tissue from Planned Parenthood, agreeing with the defense’s argument that the grand jury exceeded its authority by investigating the activists after clearing Planned Parenthood of wrongdoing.

District Judge Brock Thomas dismissed the tampering with government records charges against David Daleiden, 27, and Sandra Merritt, 63, at the request of the Harris County prosecutor’s office.

“The grand jury took the investigation where the facts led it; however, Texas law limits what can be investigated after a grand jury extension order is issued,” District Attorney Devon Anderson said in a statement. “In light of this and after careful research and review, this office dismissed the indictments.”

Two suicide car bombs near U.N. offices kill 13 in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Two suicide bombers detonated explosives-laden cars Tuesday outside the office of the U.N.’s mine-clearing agency and a Somali army checkpoint in Mogadishu, killing 13 people, including seven guards, Somali police officials said.

The blasts occurred near the African Union base in the area of the Mogadishu airport, Somali police chief Gen. Mohamed Sheikh Hassan said.

Clinton, Dems put gun control at center of convention stage

PHILADELPHIA – With mothers of police violence victims on the stage and anti-gun protesters in the streets, Hillary Clinton and Democrats are giving gun control and efforts to curb police violence a starring role at their summer convention.

A group of women who have lost children to gun violence or after contact with police took the stage to applause and chants of “black lives matter” on Tuesday at the Democratic National Convention. Known as the Mothers of the Movement, the group includes Sybrina Fulton, whose 17-year-old son, Trayvon Martin, was killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer in 2012.

“Hillary Clinton has the compassion and understanding to support grieving mothers,” Fulton said. “She has the courage to lead the fight for common sense gun legislation.”

Also taking the stage Tuesday were former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Pittsburgh Chief of Police Cameron McLay, who said it is possible “to respect and support our police while at the same time pushing for these important criminal justice reforms.”

Clinton has made gun safety one of the foundations of her presidential campaign, vowing to overcome the legendary resistance of gun-rights advocates and their GOP allies to push for expanded criminal background checks and a renewal of a ban on assault weapons.

Her search for a breakthrough comes as Donald Trump has repeatedly touted the benefits of access to firearms as a way to counter acts of violence. The Republican nominee

promoted a law-and-order message at his convention, where speakers routinely expressed solidarity with police officers and decried the recent slayings of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Yet Democrats view the recent spate of mass shootings and police-involved killings as turning the tide in favor of new restrictions on firearms and a catalyst for criminal justice reform.

“This is the moment,” said Melissa Mark-Viverito, the speaker of the city council in New York.

Indeed, Americans increasingly favor tougher gun laws by margins that have grown after the spate of recent mass shootings, according to a recent Associated Press-GfK poll.

Almost two-thirds say they support stricter laws, with majorities favoring nationwide bans on the sale of semi-automatic assault weapons such as the AR-15 and on the sale of high-capacity magazines holding 10 or more bullets.

Both conventions have coincided with a wrenching period of violence and unrest, both in the United States and around the world.

Last month, a gunman opened fire in a crowded gay dance club in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people and wounding dozens more in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

Still, despite a spate of high-profile shootings in recent years, including the 2012 slaying of 20 first-graders and six adults at a Connecticut school and the murder of nine African-American church members at a Charleston church last year, Democrats have largely failed in their efforts to change federal gun laws.

In the recent AP-GfK poll, less than half of Americans said they believe gun laws will get tougher in the coming year.

Politicians OK with status quo A judge’s ruling last Wednesday placed another hurdle in the way of Illinois voters electing their representatives, instead of politicians picking their constituents.

The battle now moves to the Illinois Supreme Court, which is being asked to rule quickly so the issue still may be placed on the November ballot.

Although there are legal issues, the real message here is a lot of politicians are perfectly happy with the status quo.

The Legislature basically draws the political maps, meaning Democrats who control the Statehouse are guaranteed to maintain their majority.

Despite complaining about the system and judge’s ruling, many Republicans are in comfortable districts and have little or no election competition. They scream but take little real action. The legal challenge that was successful was brought by an ally of House Speaker Michael Madigan.

The result of this gerrymandering has been most elections for the House and Senate this year are uncontested. That’s not because everyone is happy with the job our politicians are doing. As a group, they have overseen the sinking of our state into a financial laughingstock.

Cook County Circuit Judge Diane Larsen ruled that citizens clearly have a right to try to amend the constitution to change this situation. But then she ruled that the proposed amendment couldn’t be placed on the ballot because it also involves changing the roles of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and the Supreme Court justices. The duties of those offices, she ruled, cannot be changed by amendment.

But it’s a catch-22. Those offices already are involved in legislative elections, so to change the redistricting process, the roles of those offices have to change. The decision illustrates how difficult it is for Illinois voters to change the constitution.

Strike difficult; it’s virtually impossible.

Collecting the necessary signatures and having them verified is one obstacle, but the legal interpretations of the constitution have turned into an insurmountable wall.

The Independent Maps movement argues in their appeal to the Supreme Court the framers of the state’s constitution clearly intended for voters to be able to change the way legislators are elected. It’s the courts that have turned that intent on its head.

Of course, the General Assembly could pay heed to its constituents and place redistricting reform on the ballot. Instead, our politicians play games. During the last session, both the House and Senate approved different measures disguised at redistricting reform. Since the same wording wasn’t approved by both chambers, nothing gets on the ballot. It’s now up to the seven justices on the Supreme Court to right this wrong. They should hear the expedited appeal and their ruling should be on the side of voters, instead of protecting the jobs of elected officials.

A vacuum of leadership on trade

The liberal economic order created in the second half of the 20th century has rarely seemed in such danger. The U.S. and Europe led the way in building that system but are no longer its champions.

The next U.S. president, it seems, will be either a timid, wavering defender of trade or an outright protectionist. Meanwhile, Britain’s decision to leave the European Union brings the prospect of new trade barriers within the EU, threatening wider disruption to what’s been up to now a model of economic integration.

The threat is not so much that there will be a headlong retreat from globalization. The forces pushing the other way – advancing technology, not least – are probably too powerful. Rather, it’s that dithering and incompetent governments will prevent a liberal economic order from realizing its full potential. Unless something changes, excellent opportunities for spreading prosperity farther and faster will be lost.

To seize those chances, leaders need to understand why globalization works, be willing to make the case to skeptical voters, and

do more to support those workers whom international trade – or any other kind of economic disruption – threatens to leave behind.

Globalization is simply competition writ large. One of the few things economists know for sure – maybe the only thing – is that competition spurs innovation and efficiency, making products better and cheaper, and raising living standards in the aggregate. The wider the scope of this competition, the better. If barriers to trade and competition worked, living standards in the former Soviet empire would have vaulted past those in the U.S., leaving American consumers to gaze enviously on the good life, Cuban-style.

What about the rallying cry of the new protectionists – the idea that trade should be fair rather than free? Some rules are needed, of course, to avoid labor and environmental abuses, and to guard against predatory subsidies and exchange-rate policies. Past and prospective free-trade pacts aren’t lacking in such rules.

Yet the claim that trade with low-wage countries is unfair in and of itself is both economically

specious and morally bankrupt.

When goods are made at lowest cost, it’s a win-win for trading partners. And make no mistake: Free trade is anti-poverty. Denying countries such as China the right to sell Americans cheaper products makes both countries poorer – with the least well-off losing most.

It’s vital that political leaders make this case. When they bow to demands for trade barriers rather than propose help for workers whose jobs are displaced by competition, they abdicate their responsibility. The right approach is to provide effective safety nets, better vocational education, help with moving and retraining to find new jobs, employment subsidies for low-wage workers, and fairer, simpler taxes.

Get those things right, and you spread the benefits of domestic and foreign competition widely.

Get those things wrong, and you only compound the problem by restricting trade – adding slower growth to a rigid labor market and systemic lack of economic opportunity.

Did Ben Carson really link Hillary Clinton to Satan? Did the crowd really chant, repeatedly and vociferously, for her to be jailed? Did at least two Republicans actually call for her execution?

No, you weren’t dreaming. The answer is yes on all counts.

Then there was the party’s nominee. Donald Trump’s “acceptance speech” was a 75-minute scream as incoherent as everything that preceded it. He vowed to protect the LGBTQ community from “a hateful foreign ideology,” as if his party’s platform did not commit it to support so-called “conversion therapy,” an offensive bit of quackery that purports to “cure” homosexuality.

He accused President Obama of dividing the nation, as if he were not the

one recycling Richard Nixon’s racist Southern strategy with unsubtle cries of “law and order,” and George H.W. Bush’s infamous Willie Horton ad with tales of “illegals” out to kill us.

Trump painted a bleak picture of a nation in decline and under siege, and he offered a range of responses: fear or fright, fury or rage. But glory be, he promised to fix everything that ails us, down to and including long lines at the airport. Trump gave few specifics, mind you, beyond a guarantee that he can do all this “quickly.” Any resemblance to a guy hawking magical elixir from the back of a wagon was surely unintentional.

This gathering made one thing clear, if it had not been already. The battle between left and right is no longer a contest of ideas, no longer about low taxes versus higher ones, small government versus big government, intervention versus isolation. No, the defining clash of our time is reason versus unreason, reason versus an inchoate fear and fury growing like weeds on the cultural, class, religious and racial resentments of people who cling to an idealized 1954 and wonder

why the country is passing them by.

The Republicans, as presently constituted, have no ideas beyond fear and fury. And Lord help us, the only thing standing between us and that is a grandmother in pantsuits.

The Democrats have their gathering this week in Philadelphia. Ordinarily, you’d call on them to present a competing vision, but the GOP has set the bar so low you’d be happy to see the Democrats just present a vision, period, just appeal to something beyond our basest selves, just remind us that we can be better and our politics higher than what we saw last week.

This has to happen. Because, you see, the Republicans were right on at least one point: The nation does face a clear and present danger, a menace to our values, our hopes and our future.

If the GOP wants to see this threat, there’s no need to look outward.

Any good mirror will do.

Its reasoning was highly formalistic.

It held that because the public records act only requires disclosure of existing records, and there was no existing metadata list, there was no obligation to disclose it. Given that the e-mails exist and are preserved, and that the metadata can be generated electronically in seconds, the argument was pretty clearly intended to solve the confidentiality problem.

The court admitted that public officials could redact the metadata to avoid disclosing any confidential information.

But it said that the redaction process would be too burdensome.

The reality in the information age is that disclosing metadata can give a smart interpreter almost all the information needed to figure out what’s being said. That’s exactly why the National Security Agency was so eager to gather metadata in the first place.

Properly analyzed, metadata reveals a network or web of relationships.

Frequency and duration of messages deepen the picture. The actual content of what people have to say becomes almost unimportant, because it can be inferred from the circumstances and the information.

For these reasons, the public almost certainly shouldn’t be able to get access to the metadata of police communications. The patterns and networks of police communication would be of tremendous use to enterprising criminals. Redaction might appear to solve the problem of a particular individual’s privacy interests. But that’s not the real problem with mass disclosure of police metadata. The true danger lies in compromising the effectiveness of law enforcement.

In other words, the police have something like the same privacy interests in their communications metadata that you and I should have in ours.

Although the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit vindicated Snowden in 2015 by holding that the metadata collection program was unlawful in going beyond statutory authorization, courts have been slow to recognize a fundamental privacy interest in metadata. The New Jersey case gives the state Supreme Court a chance to send the message that metadata deserves to be private.

What would be perverse would be to give government communications greater protection than those we should rightfully enjoy as individuals. The constitutional right to privacy under the Fourth Amendment applies to “the people,” not the government.

Last week’s Republican conclave in Cleveland came across less as a nominating convention than as a fourday nervous breakdown, a moment of fracture and bipolarity from a party that no longer has any clear idea what it stands for or what it is. Everywhere you turned there was something that made you embarrassed for them, something so disconnected from fact, logic or decency as to suggest those things no longer have much meaning for the party faithful.

Did the convention really earn rave reviews from white supremacists, with one tweeting approvingly that the GOP “is becoming the de facto white party?”

Did Florida Gov. Rick Scott really say he could remember “when terrorism was something that happened in foreign countries” – as if four little girls were never blown to pieces in a Birmingham church, and an NAACP lawyer and his wife were never killed by a bomb in Scott’s own state?

Did Silicon Valley entrepreneur Peter Thiel really say, “It’s time to end the era of stupid wars,” as if it were

Huskies not ready for jump to AAC VIEWS Jesse Severson Don’t expect Northern Illinois to be leaving the Mid-American Conference anytime soon.

The landscape of college athletics was shook up recently when it came out that the Big 12 Conference was looking to expand, which inevitably caused some Northern Illinois fans to dream. NIU will not be in the Big 12, but if the Big 12 takes schools that are currently in the American Athletic Conference – such as Houston – that will open up a slot and the Huskies could ditch the MAC for presumably greener pastures of the AAC. However, all recent evidence shows that the Huskies athletic programs across the board aren’t quite ready to make that jump.

Recently, Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier went on a radio show and talked about the rumors – no, not the rumors that he’s on the short list to take the Missouri job – about the possibility of NIU joining the Big 12.

“I think it’s great to be a part of a conversation that respects the body of work of what we’ve accomplished from top to bottom, especially this fantastic sport of football,” he said.

Except, that “top to bottom” part isn’t necessarily true.

It’s no doubt that Northern Illinois has become the premier football program in the MAC – the six consecutive MAC West titles speak for themselves. The Huskies could walk into the AAC tomorrow and would likely hold their own against the other schools in the conference, although conference championships wouldn’t come piling in anymore. Northern Illinois will get a good glimpse into how it compares with AAC teams when it heads to South Florida to take on Bulls in the second week of the 2016 season.

But looking at all of the other athletic programs besides football, both the men and women teams, Northern Illinois has won just two MAC Tournaments the past 10 years – both coming from the men’s soccer team, in 2006 and 2011. Men’s basketball hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament in two decades. Volleyball has been the strongest with two MAC regular season titles in the past five years but only one NCAA Tournament appearance. Women’s basketball hasn’t finished better than fifth in the MAC

Considering the AAC would likely want a full-time member to replace any school that hypothetically goes to the Big 12, Northern Illinois hasn’t proved enough in the MAC to deserve a shot at a better conference.

How would it look to see the NIU women’s basketball team take on UConn? While the men’s basketball team is certainly improving with plenty of really talented young players, they’d be joining a conference that has 22 Final Four appearances.

There’s also a lot more money to throw around in the AAC, with a seven-year, $126 million TV deal it signed with ESPN and CBS Sports in 2013 and according to USA Today, the highest-paid football coach in the MAC is PJ Fleck at $800,000, while nearly every coach in the AAC is worth more than $1 million.

Money is obviously tight at NIU right now and attendance numbers are low, so how enticing does that make NIU look to the AAC? The one saving grace, aside from the whole Chicago market thing, that could allow the Huskies to jump ship to the AAC is that in the two money-generating sports – football and basketball – the Huskies could

likely be decent in the conference, although that’s relying heavily on the young men’s basketball players fulfilling their potential. It would also mean that NIU is just banking on those two sports and every other athletic program would be lambs led to slaughter.

Maybe the Huskies would be the low dog on the AAC totem for a few years before the added dollars of being in the AAC will help them build up the programs.

However, considering the Huskies are already struggling across the board, they should keep their focus on dominating the MAC – from top to bottom – before setting their sights on a promotion to a better conference.

CHICAGO – With the Sunday night trade deadline approaching and the White Sox hovering around the .500 mark, team vice president Ken Williams gave no indication the Sox are in seller’s mode.

“You have the conversations,’’ said Williams, who made one of his occasional appearances around the batting cage before the Sox hosted the Cubs Tuesday at U.S. Cellular Field. “[General manager] Rick [Hahn] is having all the conversations, most of them coming his way -- teams calling him. We’ll sit down after he kind of gets his game plan together and we’ll discuss and debate as we always have. To say we’re going to be buyers or sellers or some combination, we just don’t know. We just don’t know.’’

Hahn last week expressed disappointment in the team’s performance after its 23-10 start and said the front office would weigh all options, not excluding a complete rebuild, although trading All-Star pitchers such as Chris Sale and Jose Quintana would be “extreme.’’

Hahn has had conversations with other clubs but is known to be asking for a bonanza of players and prospects in return for Sale and Quintana, both 27 and under contract control for several more years at team-friendly commitments.

Hahn has other pieces contending teams have interest in, but those – Todd Frazier, David Robertson, Melky Cabrera to name three – are under contract next year, Robertson for two more. The front office isn’t under the gun to deal now.

There is always the offseason for trades, Williams said.

“I don’t know that there ever is a time you’re trying not to get better,’’ he said.

“There is a season for these things to happen, but we’ve done things in June, way before the deadline and we’ve done things at the other side in preparation for the next year, for instance. So you just can’t anticipate what’s going to happen. You just have to let it play out.’’

Asked if he believes this team, .500 after Tuesday’s game, can still contend for the posteason, Williams said: “This team is better when it focuses on the day-to-day grind. … I am proud of the grind and effort. We’ve had some bad streaks but there is a lot of talent out there. It’s not out of the realm we can run off another hot streak or two.’’

CHICAGO – James Shields allowed four singles in 72/3 innings, Adam Eaton homered and the White Sox stayed unbeaten since Chris Sale’s suspension by beating the Cubs 3-0 Tuesday night in Chicago’s crosstown rivalry.

The Cubs lost their second straight and never got to use new closer Aroldis Chapman hours after he joined the team and struggled answering questions related to an altercation last year with his girlfriend.

Shields (5-12) struck out five and continued an impressive turnaround from a terrible first three starts after

being acquired from San Diego last month. Nate Jones finished the eighth and David Robertson worked the ninth for his 24th save in the White Sox’s fourth straight win since their ace was sent home for destroying throwback jerseys.

Jose Abreu had two hits, including an RBI single in the first off Kyle Hendricks (9-7) that ended his streak of 22 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

Eaton added a solo homer in the fifth on a day where both teams faced off-field issues.

Chapman arrived after being acquired from the New York Yankees and immediately faced scrutiny from

reporters over his offseason domestic violence incident and ensuing 29game suspension.

Chapman said he couldn’t recall a conversation with Cubs personnel about off-field conduct that Chicago described in a team release when it announced the trade.

President of baseball operations Theo Epstein said the Spanish-speaking Chapman did not understand the reporters’ questions, adding that Chapman was “pretty nervous” and insisting the closer understands what the Cubs expect.

Shields, who allowed 22 runs in his first three starts with the White Sox, walked four.

At least 105 Russian athletes banned so far

MOSCOW – At least 105 athletes from the 387-strong Russian Olympic team announced last week have been barred from the Rio Games in connection with the country’s doping scandal.

International federations in canoeing, sailing and modern pentathlon ruled out eight on Tuesday, including an Olympic gold medalist. Rowing added 19 more athletes to three that had previously been announced. Swimming has also barred some athletes.

Some appeals are likely.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian media that Putin had discussed the doping issue with his national security council.

“The topic of the recent International Olympic Committee ruling relating to Russian athletes was raised ahead of Putin’s planned meeting tomorrow with the Russian Olympic team,” Peskov was quoted as saying.

The vast majority of the Russian athletes who miss out are in track and field, where 67 athletes were ruled out when a ban on the Russian team was upheld at the Court of Arbitration for Sport last week.

More are falling foul of new rules imposed in the wake of the country’s doping scandal.

While Russia avoided a blanket ban from the International Olympic Committee, it has lost several medal contenders to new IOC rules imposed Sunday banning Russia from entering athletes who previously doped.

Alexander Dyachenko, an Olympic champion in 2012, was among five ca-

noeists ruled out after being named in a recent report by World Anti-Doping Agency investigator Richard McLaren alleging a state-sponsored doping cover-up.

McLaren’s report last week specifically detailed how Russian state officials allegedly intervened to cover up hundreds of failed drug tests.

Dyachenko won gold in the men’s double kayak 200 meters at the 2012 London Games.

“The ICF will continue its strong zero-tolerance stance and remove all athletes that contravene its rules in anyway,” said Simon Toulson, the International Canoe Federation’s general secretary. “If you step out of line you won’t make the start line.”

The four other banned canoeists are Alexei Korovashkov – a 2012 bronze medalist in the C2 1,000 meters event Andrei Kraitor, Elena Anyushina and Nataliya Podolskaya.

The ICF also said that Russia would not be allowed to enter boats in four events in which the excluded athletes would have raced. Therefore, Austria, Germany, Sweden and Iran are in line to receive their places.

World Sailing said Pavel Sozykin, who had been due to race in the 470 class, would be excluded because he was mentioned in the McLaren report. Russia’s other six sailors were approve and Russia is able to nominate a replacement for Sozykin, the federation said.

Australians move into Rio village a few days late

RIO DE JANEIRO – Two days after describing the housing at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics as “dangerous,” Australian athletes and staff started moving into the massive athletes’ village compound Tuesday.

Australia team spokesman Mike Tancred said up to 60 delegation members – evenly split between athletes and staff – were checking in.

“All we need now is just a bit of plumbing done in three rooms, and some cleaning and our athletes will be moving in tonight,” Tancred said, standing outside the village’s arrival gate.

Australians declined to enter their rooms on Sunday after flushed toilets and open taps caused water to gush down walls and ceilings in the building. They also complained of electrical shorts and gas leaks.

Rio organizers said Tuesday that 21 of 31 buildings were ready, occupied by 600 athletes and 1,800 staff from 120 countries. Organizers said all the buildings would be ready Thursday, barely a week before the games open.

The village will accommodate about 18,000 athletes and staff with a dining room serving 60,000 meals daily.

After criticizing the conditions, Australia has spent two days trying to befriend Brazilians.

“It was nothing ever against the Brazilian people,” Tancred said. “It was just a matter that we had to make sure it was all safe for our athletes.

But it’s a fantastic village, and we’ve always said that.”

The head of Australia’s delegation Killy Chiller said the team complained publicly after working behind the scenes with teams that also had problems. She listed seven other delegations: Britain, New Zealand, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Japan and the Netherlands.

Argentina and Belarus have also complained openly about the conditions.

Gerardo Werthein, the president of the Argentina Olympic committee,

said on Monday that two of five floors in his building were uninhabitable.

“Ours is one of the most affected buildings, as is the Australia one,” Werthein said.

Tancred said Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes would hand the team an official key on Wednesday. Paes harshly criticized Australia, then backed down and said their building was one of the worst prepared in the village.

He sarcastically said he was tempted to put “a kangaroo jumping outside” the Australians’ building to make them happy.

As it turns out, the mayor will be getting his own gift.

“We’re going to give him the boxing kangaroo as a gift,” Tancred said.

Federer to miss Olympics, rest of 2016 tennis season

Roger Federer is sitting out the rest of this season, including the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and U.S. Open, to protect his surgically repaired left knee.

Federer wrote on his Facebook page Tuesday that he needs “more extensive rehabilitation following my knee surgery earlier this year.”

“The doctors advised that if I want to play on the ATP World Tour injury free for another few years, as I intend to do, I must give both my knee and body the proper time to fully recover,” Federer said.

The owner of a record 17 Grand Slams titles turns 35 on Aug. 8, so the reference to “another few years” might give his fans increased hope of seeing Federer continue to wield a racket for quite some time.

His agent, Tony Godsick, wrote in an email to The Associated Press that Federer’s plan is to “be ready for the start of next

year.”

Federer is the first member of tennis’ so-called “Big 4” – a group that also includes No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic, 14-time major champion Rafael Nadal and 2012 gold medalist Andy Murray – to pull out of the Rio Games, where that sport’s competition starts on Aug. 6, a day after the opening ceremony.

Federer often has spoken about how much the Olympics mean to him, in part because he met his wife, Mirka, when both were athletes at the 2000 Sydney Games. Federer won a silver medal in singles for Switzerland four years ago in London, and he teamed up with Stan Wawrinka to win a gold medal in doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In Brazil, Federer was expected to play singles, doubles with Wawrinka, and mixed doubles with Martina Hingis.

He is the second big draw who will be missing from the Rio tennis tournament: Five-time major champion Maria Sharapova won’t be there because she is

serving a two-year doping ban.

The arthroscopic procedure Federer had on his knee in February, repairing torn cartilage, was the first operation of his lengthy and accomplished career. Federer said he got hurt while preparing a bath for his twin daughters.

He’s also had back issues this season, missed the French Open to end his record 65-appearance streak at major tournaments, and did not win a title of any sort in 2016 – making it the first year since 2000 that he will finish without at least one trophy.

So after participating in every single Grand Slam tournament from the 2000 Australian Open through the 2016 Australian Open, Federer will be sitting out two of the last three this year. He is a five-time champion at the U.S. Open and was the runner-up there to Djokovic last year.

Federer, who has spent more weeks at No. 1 than anyone in the history of the ATP computerized rankings, currently sits at No. 3, having gone 21-7 this season.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Although Antonio Vargas still thinks about the cut that nearly ended his Olympic dream, his unprotected head will be clear when he steps into the ring in Rio de Janeiro.

Vargas grew up sparring and competing in protective headgear, so he had never been cut in a fight before his face split open in that bloody loss at the U.S. Olympic team trials seven months ago. The gifted flyweight from Florida had to fight his way back through the challengers’ bracket, surviving to earn a spot on the team.

Cuts haven’t been a major concern in Olympic boxing since 1980, but they will be a constant danger in Rio, where the 250 male fighters will box without headgear for the first time since Moscow.

Fighters have had three years to adjust to the change, and they’ve adapted with the same tenacity that made them boxers in the first place.

“I’m always going to do what I have to do,” Vargas said. “I don’t think it’s really changed my style.

I’ll still have the same style going into the Olympics.

I just have to be careful.”

The International Boxing Association made a highly visible alteration to its sport when it removed the headgear ahead of the 2013 world championships. Many fighters are excited for fans to see a sport that looks more like the pros, but the move is still criticized by other fighters and coaches who believe safety has been made secondary to appearance, particularly because of the high potential for cuts in a short, multi-fight tournament.

“I don’t think it was a good idea, taking off the headgear, because we’re still amateur,” U.S. light flyweight Nico Hernandez said. “I got cut on both eyes before. I got stitches and stuff from head-butts.

I just don’t think it’s as safe for the amateur boxers.

But I also like it, because you can have more peripheral vision and you don’t get as hot. I’ve had a lot of fights without now, so I’m used to it.”

The bulky protective pads were placed on Olympic fighters’ heads in 1984 because organizers wanted to improve safety, and they’ve been pulled off the fighters heading to Rio for ostensibly the same reason.

In its lengthy quest to become a professional boxing promoter with control over the Olympics , AIBA went to great lengths to establish a scientific backing for its decision to drop headgear. The IOC also cited research to support the notion that the bulky head guards reduced the number of knockouts and stoppages, thereby reducing concussions.

Their conclusions have been disputed by other scientists and fighters alike, but the benefits of removing headgear go beyond any concussion data in an inherently dangerous sport: Quite simply, the removal of headgear allows television audiences to see the fighters’ faces.

Cutler will take advantage of Jeffery, White and a rejuvenated Eddie Royal to create a niche as one of the most potent game-managers in the league – with fewer attempts but career-highs in yards per attempt, touchdowns and passer rating.

Pessimist: Too many losses on offense – Adam Gase, Matt Forte, Matt Slauson, Martellus Bennett – will put Cutler back in a dangerous position of carrying the load, with the predictable result: too many untimely picks, fumbles and sacks with the usual risk of injury.

Dowell Loggains’ offense Optimist: Loggains’ familiarity with

Cutler and his greater emphasis on the run game will give the Bears a diversified offense that can keep defenses on their heels, which will help Kevin

Pessimist: With too many new players and young players, the Bears will struggle to establish the run, preventing Cutler from getting into the groove he needs to avoid untimely mishaps.

They will miss Forte, Slauson and even Bennett.

The rookies Optimist: With contributions from top

(Floyd, Whitehair) to bottom (Jordan Howard, Deandre Houston-Carson, Daniel Braverman), this will be the Bears’ best rookie draft class since 2004.

The upgrade on special-teams alone will make GM Ryan Pace look good.

Pessimist: With Floyd struggling to get on the field, let alone make an impact, the Bears will have few, if any, difference-makers out of this group of rookies. The biggest impact will be on special teams.

ADULT POPSICLES RECLAIM SUMMER Freeze your liquid assets with ice pops

n an evening in mid-June, I was sitting on the couch working (a verb that seems to be synonymous with “adulting”) when I caught a flash of movement out the window. I turned to watch a group of kids sprinting pell-mell down our street, racing each other to the Good Humor truck near the playground. They were young, they were fast, they had the ferocity of those who have just been released onto summer and are now falling on it like wolves.

Watching them come to an almost cartoonish screeching halt at the ice-cream truck, I had a vivid sense-memory of being that age: standing in late-afternoon light with friends, smelling the new-mown grass and melting blacktop, licking off the sticky trickle of popsicle syrup melting down my arm.

Summer. Remember when you had one, when summer didn’t just mean a hotter commute to work and some extra daylight hours to work in? When summer meant whole months of freedom? Remember how little you appreciated it, you little punk? (I mean, I don’t know about you, but I actually remember saying to my mom after about two weeks of summer vacation, “I’m soooo bored.”)

After a few minutes of marinating in jealousy over those whippersnappers, I got up from the couch and wandered down the street to the van, where, after some deliberation between the Creamsicle and a red-white-and-blue rocket thingy, I bought a Drumstick, that vanilla ice cream treat that has dunked its head in peanuts.

When I unwrapped it, I found it was freezer-burned.

Thomas Wolfe was right: You can’t go cone again.

But maybe I could drag those summery novelties into adulthood? There was something pleasurable about the notion of stealing a classic kid’s treat and making it something kids can’t have. Go suck a push-up pop, munchkins, I thought. I will make something better.

Specifically, after a run to the store for frozen-pop molds, juice and fruit, and a little research into the freezing properties of hard liquor, I had molds full of goodness in the deep freeze: a grapefruit Paloma pop with tequila, lime and a little salt; a bright strawberry-Aperol mix that sang a song of summer; a honey-and-citrus syrup made sophisticated with the deep herbal notes of a little green Chartreuse. My personal favorite, probably for its absurdity, was the Gin & Tonicsicle.

Now, when I see kids running for the Good Humor truck, I think yes, yes, you scamps have the whole summer still ahead of you. But we, we have a freezer of our own.

NOTE: Many of these recipes require simple syrup. To make a simple syrup, combine 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a low boil, then cool. Transfer to a heatproof container. Once it has cooled to room temperature, cover tightly and refrigerate until chilled through; store indefinitely.

Here, a summer cocktail classic becomes a frozen novelty for adults, with juniper notes enhanced by a special soda.

If you can’t find it, don’t worry; these pops are tasty with straight tonic water as well.

Gin & Tonicsicles 6 servings

1 cup tonic water 3/4 cup Dry brand Juniper Berry Soda (may substitute the same amount of extra tonic water) 1/2 cup dry gin 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (from 1 lime) Dash Angostura bitters 2 to 3 tablespoons simple syrup Combine tonic water, soda, gin, lime juice, bitters and simple syrup (to taste) in a large liquid measuring cup, stirring to combine. Pour liquid into the molds and insert sticks. Freeze overnight. To loosen from the molds, run a popsicle in its mold briefly under warm water and gently slide the pop free.

Nutrition information per pop: 80 calories, 0 g protein, 9 g carbohydrates, 0 g fat, 0 g saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 5 mg sodium, 0 g dietary fiber, 8 g sugar.

The combination of strawberries and citrusy, lightly bittersweet Aperol is a beautiful one, tasting of summer. You can substitute Campari for a slightly more bitter variation.

Strawberry-Aperol Pops 6 servings

1½ cups fresh hulled, sliced strawberries 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup Aperol (may substitute Campari) 1/4 cup dry vermouth Place the strawberries in a bowl. Cover with the sugar and allow to sit for an hour, until the sugar draws out the berries’ juices. Transfer the mixture to a blender along with the water, Aperol and vermouth. Purée on high speed, then strain through a fine-mesh strainer, using a spatula to push through and extract as much liquid as possible. Pour the strained liquid into the molds and insert the sticks. Freeze overnight.

To loosen from the molds, run a popsicle in its mold briefly under hot water and gently slide the popsicle free.

Nutrition information per pop: 160 calories, 0 g protein, 27 g carbohydrates, 0 g fat, 0 g saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol,

0 mg sodium, 0 g dietary fiber, 26 g sugar.

These tart and citrusy pops bring together honey, gin and green Chartreuse; a touch of salt highlights the flavors nicely.

Honey Chartreuse Pops 6 servings

1½ cups honey syrup 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (from 2 or 3 lemons) 1/3 cup fresh lime juice (from 2 or 3 limes) 1/3 cup dry gin 1/2 cup water 2 tablespoons green Chartreuse 2 pinches salt Combine the honey syrup, lemon and lime juices, gin, water, Chartreuse and salt, stirring until the salt has dissolved.

Pour the liquid into the molds and insert the sticks. Freeze overnight. To loosen from the molds, run a pop in its mold briefly under hot water and gently slide it free.

This frozen riff on one of Mexico’s favorite cocktails combines grapefruit, lime, tequila and a dash of salt. A dash of hot sauce is a nice touch as well, if you like spice. Don’t increase the amount of tequila, or the pops won’t freeze. We used Ting, a Jamaican grapefruit soda, but San Pellegrino Pompelmo also works nicely.

You’ll need a 6-well popsicle mold (3-ounce-each capacity) with sticks.

Paloma Pops 6 servings

2 tablespoons water 1/2 cup blanco tequila Two pinches salt Dash or two of hot sauce (optional) Combine the grapefruit juice, soda, lime juice, agave or simple syrup, water, tequila, salt and the hot sauce, if using, in a large liquid measuring cup, stirring until the salt has dissolved. What about a watermelon-mezcal variety? Something with bourbon and peaches? What about a mai tai stick, with orgeat used as the sweetener?

If you’re feeling like experimenting, just follow the rules: • Ethanol freezes at a lower temperature than water, but assuming your freezer is set at 0 degrees F. (it should be) and you keep your pops’ syrup mix at 10 percent alcohol by volume or under, you (and your popsicles) should be solid.

• In case you’re not inclined to stop and do complicated math: 2½ cups of liquid is a little more than enough to fill six three-ounce popsicle molds.

• Assuming you’re working with a spirit that’s around 40 percent alcohol, holding it to no more than one-fifth of your mix (or half a cup) will keep you in the safe zone. Go much higher on the alcohol, and your ’sicles will end up more slushy. (Not that there’s anything wrong with a slushy, but you’ll have trouble keeping it on a stick. Which is the point here: waving your boozesicle smugly at passing young people, with their big dreams and their emojis.)

Anderson scholarship awarded DAILY CHRONICLE Michael Leopardo is the 2016 winner of the Christopher Anderson Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded each year by Christopher’s family to a senior DeKalb High School soccer player who is a good student and exemplifies the spirit, teamwork, sportsmanship and enthusiasm for soccer that Christopher demonstrated.

Leopardo played soccer for two years at DHS, serving as varsity captain and receiving a Leadership Award and Heart of a Barb Award during his senior year, and was named an All-Conference Honorable Mention.

“Although Mike only played two years for DeKalb High School soccer, he made a lasting impression on the program and the coaches,” DHS Head Soccer Coach Brent McIntosh said in a news release. “Mike was always very enthusiastic about playing soccer and being in our program. He displayed

high character values and could always be counted on by his teammates.

Mike also was a fantastic ambassador for the program in school and in our community as well.

“Mike is very deserving of being awarded the Christopher Anderson Memorial Scholarship. He embodies all that the award stands for. The DeKalb High School Boys Soccer Program congratulates Mike and wishes him all the very best in his future endeavors,” he said in the release.

Leopardo will attend Iowa State University to study business and music production.

The scholarship was created in 2000 by the Anderson family in memory of their son and brother who was killed in a car accident in July 18, 1999, at the age of 16. The scholarship fund has grown each year through contributions made by his family and people in the DeKalb community and is managed by the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

NIU’s program covers English, math, reading and science reasoning.

The NIU ACT instructors include Lance Vobornik, an experienced mathematics instructor at NIU with a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics, and Melissa Craig, an experienced teacher at St. Thomas More School.

28 Cancer treatments offer risks and benefits Dear Dr. K: I survived cancer, only to be told the treatments that saved my life might have increased my risk for cardiovascular disease. What are the risks? And can I minimize them?

Dear Reader: As more people are living longer after a cancer diagnosis, more people are coping with the long-term effects of cancer treatment. Many cancer-suppressing treatments can have undesirable effects, for example, on the heart and blood vessels.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. John Groarke, a cardio-oncologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Experts in this field focus on promoting heart health in people with cancer, both during and after their treatment. He noted, as with most treatments, there are some risks as well as benefits – and the possible risks always need to be balanced against the benefits.

There can be adverse effects from cancer treatments on the heart and blood vessels, ranging from negligible to very serious. Of course, I don’t know what treatments you received, so I’m able to make only general statements.

People treated during childhood or after age 65 are more prone to heart issues from cancer therapy. And certain chemotherapy drugs are more harmful than others.

Newer, targeted cancer therapies tend to have fewer side effects than older chemo drugs. But these newer drugs, which disable genes or proteins cancer cells need to grow, also can affect cells in the heart and blood vessels and diminish the heart’s pumping power.

Another group of targeted therapy drugs slow the growth of new blood vessels that feed tumors. But they also may raise blood pressure and prevent the growth of new blood vessels in parts of the heart that are starved for blood.

Heart damage from radiation therapy to the chest usually takes years to show

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff up. Radiation can cause heart tissue to scar or stiffen. This might lead to valve or heart rhythm disorders, coronary artery disease or heart muscle disease. Women with breast cancer who receive radiation therapy face a slightly higher risk of a heart attack.

Heart dangers are magnified in cancer survivors who: • received both chemotherapy and radiation; • have recurrent cancer; • have pre-existing heart disease.

As for what you can do, medications can help prevent or treat heart effects from chemotherapy. All cancer survivors should stay vigilant for any new cardiovascular symptoms. If you experience shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue or a rapid, irregular heartbeat during or after treatment, report them to your doctor right away.

You already have had cancer and received treatment. For other readers who may be told in the future they have cancer, here are some direct questions to discuss with a doctor: Will the treatment cure the cancer or just postpone death? If it won’t be a cure, by how long will it postpone death? Will treatment improve cancer symptoms, now or in the future? And what are the side effects of treatment, including, but not limited to, heart problems?

They fill my life with joy, and I am thankful to be their mother.

My problem is, I haven’t been able to face my family members since the birth of my second child.

My family has strong Christian roots, and I know they were disappointed when they heard about another unplanned pregnancy. This isn’t the first time I have disappointed them. I smoked a lot of marijuana as a teen and young adult. I straightened out my life during my late 20s.

I miss my family very much, and I also feel my children are missing out by not knowing them. My parents passed away many years ago. My children’s father was beaten to death days before my youngest daughter was born.

My aunts and uncles are all I have left, and it breaks my heart to think we have lost them, too. It is true that all of the defenders’ methods can be analyzed by declarer, and he may benefit from the “free” information. However, defense is so difficult that the defenders just have to accept those bad deals. With no leading or signaling agreements, many contracts would make that could have been defeated. For example, in this deal, how should the defenders card to defeat three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest spade seven?

At trick one, East must put his spade jack onto the table, the bottom of equivalent cards when playing third hand high. (In general, assuming a defender can afford to do it, he plays the top of touching honors -- except when he is the third hand to play to a trick and is going to put up the highest card so far played -- he might even take the trick.)

South wins with his spade king, leads a club to dummy’s ace, and returns a club. What should East discard?

It looks tempting to pitch the heart queen, but that isn’t right. East applies the Rule of Eleven to the opening lead. Seven from 11 is four.

So, there are four spades higher than the seven in the dummy, his hand and declarer’s hand combined, and he has seen them all: dummy’s nine, his jack and queen, and declarer’s king. So, West’s spade suit is ready to run. But West doesn’t know who has the spade queen. East must clarify the position by discarding the aforementioned spade queen.
