Farewell to VCRs: Japanese maker to shelve once-top product

TOKYO – Japanese electronics maker Funai Electric Co. said it’s pulling the plug on the world’s last video cassette recorder.

A company spokesman, who requested anonymity citing company practice, confirmed Monday that production will end sometime this month, although he would not give a date.

He said the company would like to continue production to meet customer requests, but can’t because key component makers are pulling out because of shrinking demand for VCRs. Many families and libraries have content stored in the VHS format and want to convert the tapes to DVD or other digital disks.

They can do so using VHS/DVD converters, known as “combos” in Japan. Funai will be rolling out such products later this month, the spokesman said.

Funai’s VCR factory, which is in China, is off-limits to media coverage for security reasons because other products are made at the same plant, he said.

Funai began making videotape players

in 1983, and videotape recorders in 1985. The company said they were among its all-time hit products.

Last year, Funai made 750,000 VHS machines that played or recorded cassette tapes.

In 2000, it made 15 million, 70 percent for the U.S. market, according to the company, based in Osaka, central Japan.

Other products have also grown outdated with the advance of digital and other technology. That includes film cameras and floppy disks once used to store computer content, which were displaced by smaller memory devices with larger capacity and by cloud storage.

Owners of VCRs are not as emotionally attached to their machines as are owners of Sony Corp.’s discontinued robotic dog Aibo, or the Boombox, the portable cassette player, with its deeply resonating speakers and cool designs, said Nobuyuki Norimatsu, nicknamed “Aibo doctor,” of A-Fun, a company of engineers who do repairs for discontinued electronics goods.

Still, many VCR owners want to dub their videos on their own, rather than sending them to outside companies, because the content is so personal, he said.

Kishwaukee Fest returns, features skateboarding, bacon

ksmith@shawmedia.com Local skaters will take over Locust Street on Wednesday in downtown DeKalb, as they flip and grind their way into Kishwaukee Fest after the celebration’s yearlong hiatus.

Fargo Skateboarding, 629 E. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb, will host its third Skate Street program from 4 to 9 p.m.

Friday, beginning with free skateboarding lessons, and ending with free skate session and best trick contest later in the evening, said the owner of Fargo Skateboarding Company, Ariel Ries.

The winner of the skateboard trick contest will receive a month of free skating at the shop’s new indoor skate park, expected to open in August.

Fargo employees and the company’s sponsored skateboarding team will set up ramps and rails on Locust Street between Second and Third streets, to draw both skaters and spectators, she said.

“It’s a nice centrally located spot right downtown, but it doesn’t disrupt much,” Ries said. “It’s usually around 100 people and probably 100 people watching. I hope it’s going to be big.”

This year’s Kishwaukee Festival will include a bigger and better-than-ever parade Friday, said the event’s creator and executive director, Michael Embrey.

The festival and one of its events, BaconPalooza, were canceled last year when Embrey announced personal matters and business opportunities had strapped him for time. However, those who missed last year’s festival will be happy to know its return has been scheduled to include new attractions in the parade lineup, Embrey said.

“We’re actually the only major parade in the latter part of the summer,” he said. “If you walk the parade route, you’ll see the kids and their smiling faces with their bags, waiting for candy. It becomes a local event, and we get Scouts involved. It’s something to do in town that beats watching bad TV and playing Game Boys.”

Locals can sample offerings from food vendors and wineries at BaconPalooza from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in downtown DeKalb. The “Swine and Wine Festival” includes bacon dishes, wine tasting and a Corvette show.

This year’s parade will include a special appearance by Santa Claus and perhaps even a visit from a well-known Pokemon character, Embrey said.

The parade, which draws not only locals, but also what Embrey calls “parade junkies,” will begin at 7 p.m. on Lincoln Highway in downtown DeKalb.

“The downtown is filled,” Embrey said. “For a Friday night in July, it’s amazing to see that many people.”

D-428 board slams teachers as talks drag on

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb School District 428 board took the rare step of publicly criticizing the teachers union Monday after contract negotiations apparently stalled.

In an email sent to thousands of students, parents and taxpayers, the board called out the union for asking for “unreasonable raises,” “refusing to negotiate” and stonewalling to draw out a process that started six months ago.

“Disappointingly, after eight negotiating sessions and four federal mediation sessions, the teachers union has made a deliberate decision to not yield in their views that they deserve unreasonable raises, while simultaneously refusing to negotiate the length of the school day for the benefit of our students,” the board statement said. “At the same time, they do not dispute any of the facts that highlight the irrefutable conclusion that their proposals would harm the district now and in the years to come.”

The four-page statement ran more than 1,100 words, highlighting sticking points and the district’s rationale at the negotiating table. It referred to teacher health care benefits as “gold-plated” – twice.

Reached late Monday, the union said the board’s statement was inaccurate, but it didn’t cite any specific examples or refute any specific claims.

“The DeKalb Classroom Teachers’

Association is dedicated to negotiating a fair contract at the table – a contract that is fair not only to the teachers, but the students we serve. For the district to claim anything less is simply not true,” the union statement said. “The teachers hope that going forward the district takes these talks seriously and stops sending out half-truths and falsehoods to the community we proudly serve.”

The seven-member elected school board highlighted the disparity between how much teachers are paid and household income in the area.

“The mean income of a four-person household in the city of DeKalb is $37,300 according to latest estimates,” the statement said. “The average individual salary of a District 428 teacher is over $71,600.

Our teachers work approximately 180 days per year versus the typical 260 days per year in most workplaces. Our teachers want the community to fund their much higher salaries, gold-plated health care, and favorable work schedule with little regard to the effect it will have on current taxpayers and future taxes.”

Board President Victoria Newport couldn’t be reached after 5 p.m. Monday for comment regarding the statement. Board Vice President Vickie Hernan-Faivre declined to comment because negotiations with the union are ongoing. Fellow board member Mary Hess declined to comment individually, citing board policy that comments should come from the board president.

Board member Howard Solomon, who noted that he was not on the negotiating committee, said he’d wants to have a contract ready before the new school year starts Aug. 24.

“We are getting to a point where we want to get a contract ironed out that’s within the budget we’ve got,” he said.

“You can’t squeeze any more blood out of a turnip. We’re broke.”

Solomon also said that during the course of his career, he never earned more than $71,600, the average pay for district teachers. He said he’d like to be able to pay teachers more, but that it wasn’t sustainable given the district’s financial position.

Other sticking points in the contract negotiations include health care coverage and extending the school day to provide students with more instructional time, according to the board’s statement.

The district pays 95 percent of all single premiums and 50 percent of all family premiums for teacher health care plans, according to the statement. It accused the union of trying to short-change students.

“Teachers are refusing to extend our school day to conform to all other districts. Our district’s school day ranges from 15 to 30 minutes less per day than all other surrounding school districts,” the statement said. “During the course of a 180-day school year, that results in 45 to 90 hours less instruction time. The

additional school time would benefit our students with greater opportunities for in-class instruction or one-on-one assistance with the teachers.”

The board said the contract negotiations could have broad implications on the district’s bond rating and local property taxes.

Residents could see a property tax spike if District 428 doesn’t restructure its bonds, but refinancing could cost the district millions more in the long term.

The district issued four referendum-approved bonds in pieces between 2008 and 2011 that totaled $110 million to finance DeKalb High School, repurposing the old high school building and renovating elementary schools. The district is studying options to restructure its debt service. The board statement said “paying what our teachers are demanding could jeopardize that effort.”

“Meeting our teachers’ demands would endanger the district’s financial future and could lead to tax increases,” the statement said.

During the last teacher contract negotiations in 2013, teachers and the district reached a deal at the end of August, narrowly avoiding a strike. That threeyear agreement included a hard freeze on teacher salaries in the first year. For 2014-15, the contract allowed for a 1.1 percent pay-scale increase and a “step” increase of 2.12 percent, and for 2015-16 year, the “step” increase remained the same, but the pay scale increased an additional 1.25 percent.

Court ruling affects DeKalb council’s vote discussion

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A court decision in a nearby town has DeKalb officials considering how City Council members vote on measures and pondering whether rules need to be changed.

“Our goal is to ensure that everyone, both on the council and in the public, understands what the rules applicable to your votes are, and when you vote there aren’t surprises,” City Attorney Dean Frieders told City Council members.

He addressed the aldermen and Mayor John Rey on the issue during the Committee of the Whole meeting Monday, held before the council’s regular meeting.

Frieders, along with City Clerk Jennifer Jeep Johnson and City Manager Anne Marie Gaura told aldermen in

a memo about the the December 2015 opinion from the Illinois 2nd District Appellate Court regarding the case of a group of residents who sued their town of Crystal Lake.

During a City Council meeting there, aldermen voted on the town’s 2013 tax levy. Only four of six aldermen were present at the meeting, along with the mayor. The tax levy passed on a vote of 3-1, with the mayor not voting on the measure.

The residents sued and won on a lower court decision, and the city was to refund the tax money collected as a result of the vote. But the city won on appeal, with the appellate court ruling that with five elected officials at the meeting, there was a quorum.

The fact that, as is DeKalb, the city of Crystal Lake is home-rule. That came into play in the appellate court’s decision.

“As the total number of City Council members is seven, that body may transact official business at any meeting where at least four members are present. On December 17, 2013, five members were present, and thus there was a quorum,” read part of the appellate opinion.

Frieders said city leaders raised this issue with DeKalb’s aldermen and mayor because there are similarities between the City Council here and the one in Crystal Lake. Frieders explained that, although no situation has arisen in the immediate past, it would be beneficial for DeKalb’s elected leaders to consider a plan just in case.

“This is not a complex legal issue, but an important policy issue,” Frieders said.

DeKalb’s council is made up of seven aldermen chosen by ward and a mayor.

Aldermen seemed interested Monday in establishing a rule that would call for at

least four aldermen to be in favor of a measure before it could pass.

There was no action to be taken on the issue Monday. It was listed on the agenda as a discussion item. But the mayor said it is not a dead or moot idea.

“It will certainly come back as a proposal,” Rey said. “I need to entertain discussion with individual council members to determine individual preferences.”

But it raised more questions than it provided clarity among aldermen.

“We’re kind of in one those conundrums,” 3rd Ward Alderman Michael Marquardt said, speaking about how, with DeKalb’s current rules, the mayor could create or break a tie.

Fourth Ward Alderman Bob Snow said the City Council would need more time to think about a rules change, and discouraged making any immediate decisions.

A Wal-Mart employee and a DeKalb police officer search a garbage bin Monday. Police searched garbage bins at the entrance to DeKalb’s Wal-Mart, 2300 Sycamore Road, after a suspected bomb threat. About noon Monday officers tried to locate a gold Trailblazer seen on County Farm Road heading toward Peace Road that might have been involved in the alleged threat. At least four police vehicles were outside the store Monday afternoon, but the business remained open. Police at the scene declined to comment, and store employees referred the Daily Chronicle to the Wal-Mart media relations office, which could not be reached for comment as of Monday evening.

DeKalb police nab teen suspected in string of 60 vehicle burglaries DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Police arrested a 17-year-old DeKalb boy Monday morning suspected in 60 vehicle burglaries over the past several months.

The teen, who hasn’t been identified because of his age, has been charged with a single count of residential burglary and burglary to vehicle, but additional charges are expected, DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said.

The teen was mostly stealing change from the cars, at least one of which was parked inside a garage, prompting the residential burglary charge, Redel said.

A DeKalb police officer patrolling for car burglars initially spotted a person walking near Meridian Court and Cutler Drive in DeKalb about 1:30 a.m. Monday. As the officer approached the person, he ran and couldn’t be found.

Police discovered several car burglaries on Meridian Court and called in detectives to investigate further.

Several hours later, police spotted a male walking south on Annie Glidden Road from the area of Meridian Court.

Police found the 17-year-old had items stolen from one of the vehicles on Meridian Court.

Police believe the teen was behind 60 separate car burglaries in

the area.

The teenager was taken to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center.

Police continue to investigate the recent spate of car burglaries and remind residents to lock their doors.

“The DeKalb Police Department would like to take the time to thank the community for their vigilance in attempting to help identify those responsible for committing these car burglaries,” the department said in a news release.

James Taylor Licking, of DeKalb, IL, died of natural causes July 22, 2016. He was the first baby born in the Cmeyla Hospital on June 2, 1924, in Kewaunee, WI, the son of Ralph Herbert Licking and Theresa (Taylor) Licking.

He was a graduate of Ripon High School, Ripon, WI. During World War II, he served an enlistment in the U.S. Army Air Forces that included duty in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Morotai in the Pacific Theater. He performed two years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1961 in Sioux City, IA, as a dental officer. He then joined the Wisconsin Air National Guard, serving as a dental officer until his retirement from the military in 1976.

James graduated from Northwestern University Dental School in 1951. After graduation, he established dental practices in Greensburg, IN, and DeKalb, IL. He also practiced dentistry with the U.S. Veterans Administration in Tomah, WI. He had additional training in oral surgery and periodontics. James retired in 1988 after 37 years in private practice in DeKalb. He served as president of the DeKalb, Illinois Dental Society. He enjoyed travel, carpentry, and singing in the church choir.

His parents; a sister, Rachel Jane Licking; and a brother, John Licking, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elaine Licking; his daughters, Dr. Mary Licking of Nashua, NH, and Doris Reeser (Alan) of Bloomington, IL; a son, David Licking (Sandi) of St. Charles, IL; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A graveside service will beat 11 a.m.

Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb with the Rev. Judy Harris officiating. Military honors will be provided by the DeKalb VFW, DeKalb American Legion and Am Vets.

SPRINGFIELD – High-profile Republican Ron Sandack has resigned from the Illinois House after saying he faced unspecified “cyber-security issues.”

Sandack, the vocal floor leader for the GOP minority in the House, would not comment beyond a statement Sunday that his resignation was effective immediately.

“It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve the people of the 81st District for the past four years in Springfield,” Sandack said in a statement issued by the Republican leader’s office. “But after some cyber-security issues arose, I began to re-evaluate my continued public service.”

The lawmaker from Downers Grove, 20 miles west of Chicago, did not return phone or text messages from The Associated Press on Monday.

Sandack, who as floor leader was the face of the House Republicans during an ongoing political feud over a state budget that began 18 months ago, was a voracious user of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. But accounts on both had been removed Monday.

Illinois delegates agree with DNC chairwoman resignation

CHICAGO – Illinois delegates agree with Democratic chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s decision to resign from the leadership post after the Democratic National Convention.

The Florida congresswoman is stepping down as chairwoman following hacked emails suggesting the DNC favored Hillary Clinton in the presidential primaries against Bernie Sanders.

Illinois House Deputy Majority Leader Lou Lang is a Clinton delegate. He said the emails are dramatic, but they’ll be a “small glitch” in the end. He called resigning a “wise decision.”

Chicago Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa is a Sanders delegate. He said the resignation was “the correct step,” though it should’ve occurred earlier.

Both delegates believe the party can be unified. Lang said it’s important for Sanders to reiterate Clinton support.

Ramirez-Rosa said he’ll vote for Clinton, but she needs to reinforce opposition to

opponent. He was the GOP’s representative on the nationally televised “The Daily Show” in June when the program examined the impact of the budget meltdown.

“You take a lot of hits in this job,” Palatine Republican Sen. Matt Murphy said. “Was this the final straw? I guess in this case, it was.”

In Sunday’s statement, Sandack, a partner in a Chicago law firm, said his decision was also driven by missed time with his family, a factor Minority Leader Jim Durkin of Western Springs said was mentioned when the two spoke Sunday.

“He stated that his decision to resign was personal and for the benefit of his family,” Durkin said by text message to the AP. “I respect Ron’s decision and will miss him as a colleague and friend.”

Republican leaders have 30 days to name a replacement for Sandack’s seat.

He was up for re-election in November against Democratic attorney Greg Hose, a Downers Grove Village Council member. The incumbent had more than three times the campaign cash on hand as did Hose. According to Illinois State Board of Elections records, Sandack had $128,000 in the bank as of June 30, compared with $34,000 for Hose, who said he was surprised by the announcement.

Illinois governor renews call for term limits

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner is renewing his call for term limits and said the General Assembly should vote on the idea in the fall.

PHILADELPHIA – Ending months of animosity, Bernie Sanders robustly embraced his former rival Hillary Clinton Monday night as a champion for the same economic causes that enlivened his supporters, signaling it was time for them, too, to rally behind the Democratic nominee in the campaign against Republican Donald Trump.

“Any objective observer will conclude that – based on her ideas and her leadership – Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States,” he declared in a headlining address on the opening night of the Democratic convention.

President Bill Clinton, watching from the audience, leapt to his feet and applauded, as did most of the delegates filling the convention arena.

Sanders joined a high-wattage lineup of speakers, including first lady Michelle Obama who delivered a forceful, impassioned defense of the Democratic nominee. Mrs. Obama’s address all but wiped away earlier tumult in the convention hall that had exposed lingering tensions between Clinton and Sanders supporters.

“I want someone with the proven strength to persevere, someone who knows this job and takes it seriously, someone who understands the issues a president faces are not black and white,” Mrs. Obama said. Referring to Trump’s penchant for tweeting, she said of the presiden-

cy: “It cannot be boiled down to 140 characters.”

While Sanders had endorsed Clinton previously, his remarks Monday marked his most vigorous and detailed praise of her qualifications for the presidency. It came at a crucial moment for Clinton’s campaign, on the heels of leaked emails suggesting the party had favored the former secretary of state through the primaries despite a vow of neutrality.

Sanders scored the resignation of party chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a nemesis in the primaries, but that wasn’t enough to quell the anger of supporters. As the convention opened, they still erupted in chants of “Bernie” and booed Clinton the first several times her name was mentioned. Outside the convention hall, several hundred marched down Philadelphia’s sweltering streets with signs carrying messages such as “Never Hillary.”

By the time Sanders took the stage for the night’s closing address, much of the anger had been overshadowed by speeches promoting party unity. Sanders did his part, imploring his supporters to consider a country under Trump’s leadership.

NEW YORK – If you want to see a tall population of men, go to the Netherlands. Tall women? Latvia.

And in the United States, which lags behind dozens of other countries in height, the average for adults stopped increasing about 20 years ago.

That’s the word from researchers who analyzed a century’s worth of height data from 200 countries. Results were released Monday in the journal eLife.

National height averages are useful as an indicator of nutrition, health care, environment and general health that people have experienced from the womb through adolescence, said Majid Ezzati of Imperial College London, who led the research. Genes also influence height.

The researchers calculated average

height for 18 year olds, roughly the age when people stop growing. They drew on more than 1,400 studies that covered more than 18.6 million adults who reached that age between 1914 and 2014.

Experts said the results generally agree with what others have reported before.

The tallest men in the new analysis were Dutch, with an average height of about 6 feet. The next nine tallest countries in order for men were Belgium, Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Iceland and the Czech Republic.

Latvia topped the list for women, with an average height of 5-foot-6.

Rounding out the top 10 were the Netherlands, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Slovakia, Denmark, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine.

Over the century-long span of the study, the biggest gains appeared in South Korean women and Iranian men,

who added 8 inches and 6½ inches, respectively. There was little change in South Asia and some sub-Saharan African countries.

In the U.S., men gained about 2½ inches over the century, with about 2 inches for women. The nation is now the 37th tallest for men and 42nd for women, researchers said.

The analysis estimated that average height for U.S. 18 year olds maxed out at about 5-foot-10 for men in 1996, and at about 5-foot-5 for women in 1988.

Since then height has stalled but not decreased significantly, said James Bentham of Imperial College London, a study author.

Most Western countries, including the Netherlands, also have hit a plateau, although the U.S. reached it early, researchers said.

The researchers didn’t investigate the causes of the U.S. stagnation. But John Komlos, a visiting professor of eco-

nomics at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, said there could be several reasons. He didn’t participate in the new study but has previously studied height.

Komlos suggested such factors as lack of health insurance, shortfalls in medical and prenatal care, underweight and preterm babies from teenage pregnancies, and a rise in obesity, which leads to earlier puberty and so stoppage of growth.

The shortest female population in the study is in Guatemala, at an average of 4-foot-11. It is followed in order by the Philippines, Bangladesh, Nepal, East Timor, Madagascar, Laos, the Marshall Islands, India and Indonesia.

The shortest male population is in East Timor, at an average of 5-foot-3. It is followed by Yemen, Laos, Madagascar, Malawi, Nepal, Rwanda, the Marshall Islands, the Philippines and Mauritania.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The majority of some 20,000 people forced from their homes by a wildfire that exploded during the weekend were told they could return home Monday night, though an army of firefighters continued battling flames in the rugged hills and canyons northwest of Los Angeles.

Residents of two neighborhoods still under threat had to remain out of their homes, the U.S. Forest Service said, after a day when the fire grew only slightly to about 55 square miles. So far 18 residences were confirmed destroyed in the blaze that started Friday afternoon and quickly tore through drought-ravaged brush that hadn’t burned in decades.

Laurent Lacore, a native of France who lives in Santa Clarita, was among those who evacuated on Saturday, the last of his family of four to leave as the fire bore down on his house.

“The flames were right behind our backyard,” he said.

He returned Monday night delighted to find the house and everything around it had been saved, and could see a line of red fire retardant where a helicopter had stopped the fire’s approach.

“Everything is fine,” he said. “Even all of the trees are there.”

Some 300 miles to the northwest a blaze in the scenic Big Sur region of the Central Coast had destroyed 20 homes and threatened 1,650 others as it burned

borhoods.

By Sunday night, about 10 percent of Santa Clarita’s 200,000 residents had been ordered out of their homes, before most were allowed to return Monday night.

The fire exploded Saturday like a “crazy storm,” said Kara Franklin, who said sand driven by heavy winds hit her in the face as she tried to get a horse and donkey into a trailer so she could tow the animals away. From a ridgetop, she saw flames engulf a neighborhood.

When the blaze appeared to die down, she thought the worst was over and returned. Then it flared up again, and she and her son used a garden hose to put out embers that ignited spot fires on her property before fleeing.

“The heat was so intense,” Franklin said Monday from a high school that had been turned into an evacuation center. “It was an inferno that was blazing ... just coming over the ridge.”

A house two doors from hers was engulfed, providing a buffer that helped save her house.

Three Forest Service firefighters lost their homes at a remote fire station in the San Gabriel Mountains, including two who were fighting the fire at the time.

The fire destroyed film sets at Sable Ranch in Santa Clarita, which has Old West-style buildings used for movie locations. It also forced a nonprofit sanctuary for rescued exotic creatures to evacuate 340 of its more than 400 animals, including Bengal tigers and a mountain lion.

Georgina Adams has taken over the family business of crystal ball reading and fortune telling. At Psychic Readings by Georgina, 2022 Sycamore Road, DeKalb, clients can put to rest their anxieties about the near future, and instead attack it head on, Adams said.

“I don’t think that there is anything to be scared of,” she said. “Why not brace yourself to see what’s coming instead of fearing what’s coming?”

In Adams’ office, adorned with her tools of the trade – a deck of Rider Waite tarot cards, gemstones and a pristine crystal ball – the self-described third-generation psychic tells tales of the future to clients concerned about life, love, business and finances. Feeding off the energy and vibrations of her visitors, Adams’ services include psychic, crystal ball, crystal energy and tarot card readings.

Although she’s been confronted by her share of skeptics, Adams encourages people not to knock what they haven’t tried.

“A lot of people are off-putting about it, but once I tell them a little bit of what I know about them, they tend to be a little shocked,” she said.

Adams took over the business from her aunt, Sarah Adams, about two months ago. For the Adams family, psychic abilities are inherited by each generation of women, along with a set of ethics by which to practice their skills.

Crowded spaces are like a psychic overload for Adams, who said she can feel the emotions and overall energy level of a person physically close to her. She com-

pares the sensation to seeing a heat wave radiate off hot pavement.

“If I do feel like someone is going through a hard time, if I pick up on something very strongly, I will talk to them.

But if they don’t come to my place, I probably won’t,” she said.

Adams’ readings cost anywhere from $10 to $100, and serve different purposes depending on the client’s desired level of depth, she said. All her readings are private and confidential.

Though she can’t predict death, she can likely tell you all you want to know – or some things you’d rather not know – about your love life.

“With everything that’s going on in today’s world there’s a lot going on with love life and relationships,” she said.

“The best way that I can put it is I try to help them find who they’re truly supposed to be with.”

Whether she is visited by clients suspicious of their cheating spouses, or single people looking for love, Adams will disclose all, she said.

“If it’s not meant to be I will tell them.

I’m not going to tell you what you want to hear. I’m going to tell you what you need to hear,” she said. “I’m the kind of psychic that is compassionate about her clients, but is also straight-to-the-point.”

Adams relies on her clients’ participation to help her during readings, often having them shuffle the deck of tarot cards or hold the crystal ball to become psychically in tune with them. While the school of thought surrounding Adams’ line of work can be jarring to an onlooker, even some of her most stubborn skeptics have left her office as believers, she said.

“They shouldn’t fear the future, but know the future,” she said. “Don’t be skeptical and try to judge other people when you haven’t tried it yourself.”

High school PARCC exam won’t be missed Students being giddy about not having to take a test?

We fully understand the feeling.

Educators being giddy about not having to administer a test?

That’s a fairly new one for us.

But that was the general feeling among school administrators upon hearing the news last week the Illinois State Board of Education had dropped the unpopular PARCC exam for high schoolers.

PARCC, which stands for Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, was described as a “nightmare to administer” that had no bearing on college entrance.

High schoolers therefore were less likely to take the testing process seriously, and it showed.

The first round of PARCC test results, released in December an astounding half year after the exams were administered, showed only one-third of students statewide met or exceeded expectations, while two-thirds didn’t.

Ouch!

Educators decried the exam as having minimal value for high school students.

Grade-schoolers still will take the PARCC, but high schoolers will take the SAT exam, as decreed by the State Board of Education.

The SAT exam has been around for a long time. Students will be able to send their scores to college admissions offices, so they will be much more motivated to do their best.

That’s good.

We still believe the goal of the PARCC exam – to satisfactorily assess career and college preparedness – is laudable.

However, the test’s inaugural year – especially the 191-day gap before scores were available – left much to be desired.

We’re reminded of the story about the stressed-out baseball manager who, tired of his inept team’s losing ways, was asked what he thought about his team’s execution. “I’m in favor of it,” he replied.

Illinois educators, frustrated with PARCC, applaud its “execution” – the high school version, at least – and look forward to better results through the SAT. We hope they’re right.

He and his supporters – my grandfather included – weren’t going to give up the privileges they so rightly deserved. They were entitled.

And to stamp his last name on casinos, hotels and eventually a reality TV show.

When Trump came down the escalator at Trump Tower 13 months ago and announced his candidacy, almost no commentator took his chances seriously – except the Dilbert cartoonist, Scott Adams.

The other 16 Republicans largely represented a party consensus: conservative on cultural issues; pro tax cuts, backing military interventions and free trade.

Trump was different: perfunctory on cultural issues; against the Iraq War; corrosively critical of trade agreements and illegal immigration.

Trump’s victory in the Republican race owes much to $2 billion or so of free media coverage and to his 16 rivals’ unwillingness to risk attacks that might recoil against them.

His dystopian picture of America and the world spinning out of control gained credibility after terrorist attacks in San Bernardino and Paris, Orlando and Nice, and even more so after recent mass murder of police officers.

This was the centerpiece of his

acceptance speech in Cleveland.

Trump didn’t get a majority till he got home to New York on April 19, but by May 4 all his rivals withdrew.

It’s widely appreciated that Trump appealed especially to noncollege-graduates and older voters.

There’s also an ethnic angle.

Groups with high degrees of social connectedness and respect for order – Mormons, Dutch- and German-Americans – were largely immune from his appeal. People without such ties, whom he called Thursday night “people who work hard but no longer have a voice,” were drawn to him.

Groups that respond positively to raucous disruptive appeals rallied to Trump: Scots-Irish along the Appalachian spine from western Pennsylvania to northern Alabama; and Italian-Americans, half of whom live with 100 miles of New York City.

If you draw a map of counties where Trump topped 50 percent by May 4, the great bulk of them are along that diagonal and within that circle.

For 20 years American elections have been battles between two roughly equal-sized armies in a culture war, with results differing little year to year.

It’s easy to predict how 40 states will vote, much harder to predict who will win the election.

Donald Trump may well disrupt this pattern, too.

Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes seem within his range, as well as Ohio’s 16 and Florida’s 29 – which together would have made Mitt Rom-

ney president.

Trump seems less competitive in states with younger, more educated populations, such as Colorado (9) and Virginia (13). Heavily German-American Wisconsin (10) seems hostile; low-social-connectedness Nevada (6) quite friendly.

It’s not clear that this disruptive convention will help him.

Trump’s managers have disrupted the traditions in place for 30 years.

These rules had been: only supporters speak, sessions end promptly at 11 p.m., don’t visibly crush dissent, vet speeches carefully.

Monday saw a rules rebellion squashed.

Tuesday it was controversy over a bit of anodyne plagiarism.

Wednesday it was Ted Cruz’s ringing nonendorsement, booed off the stage.

But there’s another way of looking at a campaign that has not gone conventional wisdom’s way.

Disorder and disarray work against the party in power. Terrorist attacks and police shootings are not what America thought it’d get in the Obama years.

As tech billionaire Peter Thiel argued Thursday, disruption is a good thing when old ways – and especially government – aren’t working well.

An opioid bill that’s still good enough to be signed With a new bill, Congress is testing how much can be done to fight opioid addiction without spending any money.

But while the legislation is less than what the epidemic demands, it’s still good enough to merit President Barack Obama’s signature.

Almost 2 million Americans abused prescription painkillers in 2014, and more than 28,000 died of overdoses. Enough painkiller prescriptions were written in 2012 to give every American adult their own bottle.

The bill Congress sent to the

president this week authorizes federal grants to state and local governments to try new approaches to preventing and treating opioid addiction.

It does not, however, include funding for those grants.

Nevertheless, the legislation is worthwhile.

The bill would make it harder for some people on Medicare to abuse painkillers. It would allow pharmacists to partially fill opioid prescriptions, cutting down on excess pills that can be stolen or sold. And, by letting nurse practitioners and

physicians’ assistants prescribe medical treatment for opioid addiction, the bill would make that treatment easier to get.

The bill would also tighten procedures at the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is important because veterans are overrepresented among those struggling with opioid abuse.

It would expand training for opioid prescribers within the VA, give its health care providers more information about which patients are taking opioids or at risk of abuse, and make overdose-treating drugs such as naloxone more widely avail-

able.

These steps won’t be enough to end the crisis.

That will require harder changes, such as getting doctors and drug courts to overcome their aversion to treating addiction.

Meanwhile, it’s not just the health providers at the VA who need more training, but doctors nationwide.

And congressional Republicans can demonstrate their commitment to addressing this epidemic by funding the bill’s grant programs after the summer recess.

Disruptive. That’s a good word to describe Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy, and to describe the sometimes-ramshackle Republican National Convention his campaign more or less superintended in Cleveland this past week.

Apple disrupted the music industry; Uber disrupted the taxi cartels; Amazon disrupted the mega-bookstores.

Global competition has been disrupting American manufacturing for decades. The inundation of low-skill immigrants unintentionally produced by the 1965 immigration act has disrupted many communities and big metro areas.

Over history, America has mostly been built by disruption. Certainly the Loyalists in the American Revolution thought so. So did the farmers who cheered for William Jennings Bryan’s free silver as industrialization was disrupting the farm economy.

The New Deal was disruptive. So was World War II. As Yuval Levin points out in his book “The Fractured Republic,” both the political left and political right see the two post-WWII decades as normal, with high family formation, low crime, strong faith in institutions and relatively smooth economic growth.

But that period was the exception, not the rule.

Postwar America was massively disrupted by the John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. assassinations, high crime, urban riots and antiwar protests.

Scorpions complete summer season

Coach hopes to expand program, says focus is on player development

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Despite a flooded market of travel baseball teams in the area, three years ago Dedric Wright decided to add another one.

Over the weekend, Scorpions Baseball wrapped up its third successful summer season.

“I just didn’t like how some of the organizations were run,” said Wright, who said he’s found more than 50 travel teams in the Chicago area. “The focus wasn’t on the players and getting the players to where they want to go. It was

a win-at-all-cost approach. My thing is baseball – these are times where kids are learning about life. There’s a lot of things going on in the field that the players can learn from.”

Nearly half of the 17 players listed on the Scorpions’ roster are from the area, including five that were critical members of the Sycamore High School team that advanced to the Class 3A Supersectional.

“We looked for guys that we knew and grew up with and tried to build a good team chemistry,” said Jordan

Sox beat Cubs on Saladino’s single

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Tyler Saladino hit a game-ending RBI single, and the White Sox put a damper on the Cubs’ trade for Aroldis Chapman with a 5-4 victory Monday night.

J.B. Shuck sparked the winning rally with a leadoff single against Mike Montgomery (3-5), who was acquired in a deal with Seattle last week. Shuck advanced on Dioner Navarro’s sacrifice and Saladino followed with a bouncer into center field.

Dan Jennings (4-2) got two outs for the win. The Sox also got two victories in their last at-bat Sunday against Detroit.

The Cubs trailed 4-2 before Dexter Fowler and Anthony Rizzo each hit an RBI single in the ninth. They had runners on first and second with two out when Jennings struck out Jason Heyward to escape the threat.

Javier Baez hit a two-run homer for the Cubs, who were coming off a nice weekend series in Milwaukee.

Todd Frazier hit a three-run drive off Jake Arrieta and Miguel Gonzalez pitched into the seventh inning, helping the Sox to their third consecutive win. Melky Cabrera made an outstanding leaping catch in the first, robbing Kris Bryant of a home run.

Sale to return from suspension Thursday

White Sox ace Chris Sale will make his next start against the Cubs on Thursday at Wrigley Field, and Anthony Ranaudo, not Jacob Turner, will start Wednesday.

Sale is eligible to come off the suspended list Thursday. He was suspended Sunday for violating team rules, for insubordination and for destroying team uniforms before his scheduled start Saturday against the Tigers.

Ranaudo was 5-3 with two complete games and a 3.20 ERA for Triple-A Charlotte in 13 starts this season. The Sox acquired him in a trade with the Texas Rangers for right-hander Matt Ball on May 12. Turner made two starts in place of Carlos Rodon (disabled list) and didn’t get past the fourth inning in either one.

If this is about baseball, the Cubs look like they won the day by acquiring the hardest-throwing pitcher in baseball history to close games for them, keep him from closing games for another contender, and to significantly raise their World Series expectations.

Of course, nothing ever seems that simple for the Cubs, who accepted Aroldis Chapman’s domestic violence past when they gambled on his immediate future by acquiring him from the Yankees in a 4-for-1 trade Monday.

The Yankees got the Cubs’ top prospect, 19-year-old shortstop Gleyber Torres, along with right-hander Adam Warren and a pair of minor-league outfielders, Billy McKinney and Rashad Crawford.

“I’m glad no one else got him. He was going to go somewhere, so it’s good to have him on our side,” said All-Star third baseman Kris Bryant, who didn’t want to comment on the allegations of domestic abuse last winter and subsequent 30-game suspension under major league baseball’s domestic violence policy. “I don’t know enough about the situation or what happened.”

Players and manager Joe Maddon talked about “clean slates” and “not pre-judging,” and some talked about good things they’d heard about Chapman as a teammate and person in New York after returning from his suspension.

Epstein said that even after reaching agreement on the trade package, the front office and ownership would not sign off on the deal until a phone conversation with Chapman on Monday to discuss the incident in which he allegedly choked his girlfriend and then fired gunshots into a couch in his garage – and the expectations the Cubs had for him with their team.

In the end, the Cubs made the baseball decision they felt the opportunity demanded.

“You can’t take for granted the position that we’re in right now,” said Epstein, whose club has the best record in baseball as it opened a four-game stretch against the White Sox. “This was a show of faith in our bigleague team,” he said. “It was an aggressive move. The value of a 105-mph closer – and the way it lengthens the Cubs’ lineup of power setup pitchers – has been underscored the last two Octobers in the key role the Kansas City Royals’ power bullpen played in their back-to-back World Series.

“Talking to their guys, they just knew after the fifth or sixth inning, the game was over,” first baseman Anthony Rizzo said. “That’s a good feeling to have.

“We’re making a statement here.”

Rizzo understands the way that statement reads to many who view Chapman’s off-the-field issues as a reason to dismiss his potential playoff

value “Mistakes were made. He served his suspension,” Rizzo said. “Playing in New York for the Yankees isn’t easy, and you didn’t hear anything, not even a peep over there in New York about him. We don’t see it being any different here. There’s things in life that you have to overcome, and not everyone’s perfect.”

Chapman, who’s scheduled to join the Cubs on Tuesday, was still in play for several Cubs’ potential playoff rivals, with the Nationals believed to be their closest rival for him.

That caused the Cubs to increase their offer late, Epstein said.

Kyle Busch hoping to build

INDIANAPOLIS – Kyle Busch used his first Brickyard 400 victory as a springboard to his first Sprint Cup title.

He’s trying to make sure it happens again.

Another dominant weekend at Indianapolis sent Busch home with a historic sweep, a reputation for having tamed Indianapolis’ tricky 2.5-mile oval and plenty of momentum heading into the chase.

“To come out of here, at a place this hard to race and be able to have two years like this, I think, is really special,” team owner and Super Bowl-winning coach Joe Gibbs said. “That’s a tribute to him, the team and (crew chief) Adam Stevens.”

If Busch keeps driving this well, he’ll be impossible to catch.

He posted the fastest laps in both of Friday’s practices, the best speed in two of the three rounds of Cup qualifying Saturday and led a record 149 laps in the double overtime race that went 10 laps longer than the scheduled 160.

Busch also won the Xfinity Series race from the pole while leading all but one lap, and the first of two heat races.

Scandal still casts shadow at Penn State

CHICAGO – Penn State coach James Franklin sees an improved team in Happy Valley – and a program that can’t escape the shadow cast by the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

Franklin made some pointed comments about negative recruiting against the Nittany Lions, saying there are issues that need to be addressed possibly at the conference level.

“I think there’s a fine line to that,” he said at Big Ten Media Day on Monday. “I think some things need to be addressed. I do think there’s a line you do not cross. But I guess in some ways that’s the nature of the beast. I think some people are going to look for weaknesses and try to take advantage of those. But to me, there is a line that you do not cross. We’ll see how that whole thing plays out. There is a time and a place for everything.”

Franklin’s comments came in the wake of recently disclosed allegations from men who have accused Sandusky of sexual abuse that raised fresh questions about what his fellow Penn State

assistant coaches might have seen or known before his November 2011 arrest – and why they have largely kept quiet.

The allegations have also raised questions about just how far back late coach Joe Paterno became aware of the situation.

“Negative recruiting happens all over the country. Everyone is dealing with it,” Franklin said.

But other programs James aren’t dealing with a Franklin situation like this one.

Franklin said Nittany Lions coaches “probably have to answer more tough questions” than any other staff, particularly on the recruiting trail.

When reports surface, he said he calls recruits as well as their families and coaches to answer questions they might have about the direction of the program.

And he made a point to say Monday that it is headed in the right direction.

Now that they are free of sanctions and back to the full 85 scholarships, Franklin insisted the Nittany Lions are ready

to make a jump after going 7-6 and making bowl games each of his first two seasons.

“There’s very few programs that would have been able to come through what we’ve come through with the type of success that we’ve had, two bowl games in a row,” he said. “Never had a losing season through the challenges.

So there’s positives there to build on.”

But can he lead the Nittany Lions back toward the top of a conference with no shortage of big-name coaches?

Michigan in particular has huge expectations after regaining its swagger and going 10-3 in Jim Harbaugh’s first season.

“We have big hopes,” Harbaugh said. “We’ve got big dreams. We’ve got lofty goals. And all those are achievable. And they have to be worked for.

You can accomplish anything if the work is realized. And those things have to be earned. So we are in the position right now to work to get the things we want. That’s the fact. That’s the mentality. That’s the attitude.”

Wolverines tight end Jake Butt sees a team with no major weaknesses.

“We’ve got an experienced offen-

sive line, we’ve got an experienced run game, we’ve got a proven run game,” he said. “We have a defense that we know we can trust. We’ve got special teams that we know are going to put us in great positions. They’re all little pieces of the puzzle that come together.”

While Ohio State lost 16 starters, J.T. Barrett is returns for his junior season with a 15-2 record and the knowledge that he is the No. 1 quarterback after losing out to Cardale Jones last year and then replacing him.

Barrett and Iowa cornerback Desmond King – the 2015 Thorpe Award winner as the country’s top defensive back – highlighted the preseason all-Big Ten selections on Monday.

Barrett was selected to the East Division team along with Michigan defensive back Jabrill Peppers, Michigan State defensive lineman Malik McDowell, Ohio State linebacker Raekwon McMillan and Penn State running back Saquon Barkley by a media panel. Dedric Wright, who coached youth baseball in Wasco when his son was younger, said that tryouts for the 2017 team are at 10 a.m. Aug. 6 at Sycamore Park. While there has been some shifting in the roster since its first year, Wright said, many of the new players have come to the Scorpions after hearing good things about the program.

“I’ve gotten a lot of kids just through word of mouth and how I run my organizations and how I develop players,” he said. “If I have a player that says, ‘Hey Coach Wright, I have somebody who is interested in playing with us.’ Well, bring him out and see how they like the team and see how they like how we do things and from there, they are in the family.”

Wright emphasizes that the purpose of the program is to get the players to improve and position themselves for a chance to play in college.

While the Scorpions currently only have one team, Wright said his vision is to eventually have multiple teams at different age levels. For

For the players, the travel club experience is a balancing act in which everybody wants to win, but it’s this time of the year that they have to improve on their weaknesses. For Sycamore outfielder James Marcinkowski, that improvement has come from simple repetitions.

“Local guys, we’d meet up in the mornings and throw and do (batting practice) and just practicing,” he said. “You have to do it in practice before you do it in the games.”

As for the name, Wright and the players understand the unusual name of Scorpions for an Illinois-based team – laughing that they sometimes get confused looks. When Wright was coaching an off-set 11U team of the Sycamore All-Stars years ago, they adopted the nickname Scorpions. When Wright decided to start a new travel team from scratch three years ago – Jordan Wright laughs that it took forever to come up with a name – they decided to go back to Scorpions.

“What do scorpions do? They get on you and sting you. It just kind of stuck,” Wright said.

“I thought about changing the name over the years, but everybody that knows me has identified me as, ‘Oh, he runs Scorpions Baseball.’ I just sort of kept the name.”

Roster battles galore: For those who have followed this series closely, the line, “special teams will determine this roster spot” will be a familiar one.

Finding the last cornerback, safety, linebacker and wide receiver to make the team will come down to that player’s role on special teams, and how he can make an impact on the third phase. Rookies will have to fight off several returning core special-teamers, such as Sherrick McManis, Josh Bellamy, Chris Prosinski, Sam Acho, Lamin Barrow and Demontre Hurst.

Fringe roster players, including some of the aforementioned coverage guy, will have to show speed, discipline and playmaking abilities in the kicking game to guarantee a spot on the 53. The Bears do enter camp with two punters and two long snappers, but Pat O’Donnell and Aaron Brewer are expected to win those respective jobs.

During the first month of the 2015 season, the Bears’ coverage teams were a disaster, and Robbie Gould was automatic. In the second half of the season, the Bears covered kicks and punts as well as anyone and got a boost on kickoff returns from Deonte Thompson, but Gould had some crucial misses. This offseason, the Bears brought back several members of the special teams and hope to build off the successes seen late last year.

Three things to watch on special teams in training camp: The return competition: It’s Year Three following the Devin Hester era and the Bears enter training camp hoping to find answers in the return game. Last year, Deonte Thompson joined the team late and averaged 29.2 yards per return, including a 74-yarder. He provided a breakaway speed element the team needed, and he’s back to reclaim that spot. Marc Mariani, a former Pro Bowl returner, lost the kickoff-return job but maintained the punt return gig throughout the season, improving as the year went along. The Bears can also use Eddie Royal on punt returns. Seventh-round pick Daniel Braverman returned punts in college. Undrafted rookie Kieren Duncan and his 4.3 speed will try

7 Russian swimmers to miss Rio Olympics

MOSCOW – Seven Russian swimmers have been barred from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, including three linked to recent allegations of a major doping cover-up by Russian authorities, world swimming’s governing body FINA said Monday.

Reigning world 100-meter breaststroke champion Yulia Efimova is among four Russian swimmers withdrawn by the Russian swimming federation because they previously served doping bans, FINA said. The others are Natalya Lovtsova, Anastasia Krapivina and Mikhail Dovgalyuk.

The International Olympic Committee on Sunday said Russian athletes with previous doping bans would be banned from the Rio Games. That

followed the IOC’s decision not to ban the entire Russian team over allegations of state-sponsored doping.

FINA said three more swimmers were identified by World Anti-Doping Agency investigator Richard McLaren when he examined evidence that Russian government officials ordered the cover-up of hundreds of doping tests.

They are 2008 Olym- Yulia p i c s i l v e r a n d 2 0 1 2 Efimova bronze medalist Nikita Lobintsev, bronze medalist Vladimir Morozov and world junior record holder Daria Ustinova.

Russia’s top Olympic official, Alexander Zhukov, told Russian agency R-Sport that he now believed a total of 13 Russians would be ineligible due to

previous doping bans. They would be withdrawn from the team, he added.

The 13 are likely to include athletes in swimming, cycling, weightlifting, wrestling and rowing.

On Sunday, the IOC’s executive board asked individual global sports federations to decide on the entry of Russian athletes, and announced new eligibility criteria.

The rules prohibit Russia from sending to the Rio Games any athletes who have previously served doping bans.

Sports federations can also reject Russian entries if they have not undergone enough international drug testing. Results of Russian tests will not be accepted following allegations of routine cover-ups at Moscow’s anti-doping laboratory.

could be legal challenges to the IOC criteria. A similar IOC measure, known as the Osaka Rule, which would have prohibited any athletes who had received doping bans from competing in the subsequent Olympics, was declared invalid by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Zhukov said the IOC’s latest criteria violated the “principle of equality” because they only applied to Russia, although he has previously ruled out legal action.

However, Russian Swimming Federation president Vladimir Salnikov told the state Tass agency that the four swimmers cut from its team “have the chance to appeal to CAS.” Efimova’s agent, Andrei Mitkov, told Russia’s Sportbox website that she intended to file an appeal if she was not allowed to compete.

NFL clears Peyton Manning of HGH allegations

The NFL says it found no credible evidence that Peyton Manning was provided with human growth hormone or other prohibited substances as alleged in a documentary by Al-Jazeera America last year.

The league said the quarterback and his wife, Ashley, fully cooperated in the seven-month investigation, providing interviews and access to all records sought by investigators.

The NFL is continuing its investigation into allegations made against other NFL players in the documentary, which the league said involves “different lines of inquiry and witnesses.” Those other players – all of them linebackers – provided the league with sworn affidavits, but the NFL wants to interview them in person.

Comeback route: NFL reinstates wide receiver Josh Gordon

CLEVELAND – Josh Gordon’s curious and complicated career has taken a new turn.

He’s getting yet another chance.

The talented but troubled wide receiver has been reinstated on a conditional basis by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who met face to face with Gordon last week and said he believes the 25-yearold can “make the right choices” going forward.

Gordon has been banned since February 2015 for multiple violations of the league’s drug policies. He will be suspended for the first four games of the 2016-17 season, but he’s allowed to join the team in its upcoming training camp and can participate in meetings and conditioning work.

28 Heart palpitations should be checked Dear Dr. K: I often experience heart palpitations – almost every time I’m excited, angry or scared. Is this dangerous to my health?

Dear Reader: The word “palpitations” is used differently by different people. To me, palpitations are simply an awareness of your heart beating. People usually aren’t aware of their heart beating. But when it beats unusually forcefully, irregularly or rapidly, you notice the heartbeat.

Most people feel their heart beating forcefully and rapidly during intensive exercise.

But people who have never experienced heart palpitations at rest might not realize how frightening they can be. Certain conditions can make a person’s heart feel as if it is pounding, skipping or racing so fast it will explode from their chest.

Palpitations during exercise occur because of a rush of adrenaline that courses through your body. This causes your heart to beat more forcefully and rapidly than usual.

Adrenaline surges also can be generated by a strong emotion such as excitement, fear or anger. They also can come on after consuming a stimulant such as caffeine.

Another common source of palpitations is premature contraction of the atria, the heart’s upper chambers. Sometimes these chambers pump a fraction of a second earlier than they should. Then they rest an instant longer afterward to get back to their usual rhythm. This feels like a skipped beat. It often is followed by a forceful contraction as the ventricles clear out the extra blood they accumulated during the pause. These premature beats almost always are harmless.

The sensation of abnormal heartbeat can be a warning sign of a heart rhythm problem.

Some of these heart rhythm problems are of no consequence. But others, unfortunately, can be very serious: They may lead to stroke, and even sudden death.

Assuming the doctor does not find anything serious behind your palpitations, you should feel reassured. But if you’re still bothered by unexplained palpitations, some simple changes may reduce both their frequency and intensity.

Low blood sugar can trigger palpitations, so make a point of eating regularly. Drinking plenty of fluids and getting enough sleep also may help. Stress and anxiety are a source of palpitations in many people. If that is the case for you, breathing exercises, meditation or other relaxation techniques may do the trick. Nicotine can cause palpitations. So can alcohol and certain over-the-counter decongestant medications.

When self-care measures aren’t enough, certain drugs may help prevent palpitations.

Beta blockers that quell the effects of adrenaline on the heart can combat many types of fast heart rhythms. Some people may get relief with anti-anxiety medicines.

Heart palpitations usually will turn out to be nothing serious and easy to fix. But sometimes the cause of the palpitations can be a serious condition. Don’t try to guess whether it’s serious; let your doctor make that decision.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have been married for almost Jeanne three years to Phillips a woman who refuses to share the same bed with me. It started on our honeymoon when, after having sex, she chose to sleep in a different bed.

She’s in her late 40s and had never been married before. We have been intimate only twice in the last year. Moreover, she doesn’t let me sit next to her while we watch TV, and there is no kissing, no touching, no affection of any kind, physical or verbal.

I have wracked my brain trying to figure out why she treats me like this, and I have a few suspicions. She’s applying for permanent residence status and might have married me only for that, although she denies it. She no longer can bear children, so she might think there is no point in having sex or being intimate. She might have an aversion to being touched, although she doesn’t show that when we’re out in public. She likes to hug her female friends. (And no, I don’t think she’s a lesbian.)

Any love that existed between us is nearly gone at this point, so am I justified in getting a separation? We have been to counseling, and that is what the therapist recommended. –

For the rest of this week, let’s look at some useful agreements to have.

In this deal, how should the defenders card to defeat four spades after West leads the spade king?

When a defender discards from a suit not yet led by either side, it is an attitude signal. Assuming you use standard signals (not upside-down), your lowest card in a suit says that you think your side would do better to lead a different suit. Alternatively, if you pitch an unnecessarily high card, you are asking partner to shift to that suit -- unless he knows better.

In addition, if you can afford to signal with an honor-card, do so; even an unobservant partner will notice that. Here, East could signal with his heart jack, but much better and more fun is to place the heart ace -yes, the ace! -- onto the table. If you can afford to, when you cannot win the trick, play the top of touching honors.

West will momentarily think that East has lost his mind, but then West will lead the heart eight and defeat the contract.
