Recriminations roil governor’s race POLL two years after rioting in Ferguson YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

The Associated Press JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – It has been two years since a white police officer fatally shot black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, touching off days of rioting, but the political repercussions from the incident have only intensified, fanned by a governor’s race in which all four Republican candidates are pledging an aggressive law-and-order approach.

Their TV ads show images of angry protesters and burning buildings and vehicles. They denounce “lawlessness” and “chaos” while promising to “secure our streets” and “enforce the law.”

Absent from the ads is any reference to community complaints after the Brown shooting that police discriminate against black residents. The candidates also show no indication that they believe black students were justified in launching protests over racial issues that toppled the administration of the University of Missouri last year.

In police incidents, “I don’t want it to be a fair fight for our police; I want them to be able to show overwhelming force,” one of the candidates, former U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway, said in recent debate remarks echoed thematically by her rivals.

The campaign approach appears to be playing well with the mostly white rural and suburban residents who will comprise the majority of voters in the Aug. 2 Republican primary.

Strong talk has been common nationwide amid a seeming surge in international attacks and deadly domestic incidents, including the fatal police shootings of black men in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and suburban St. Paul, Minnesota, and the subsequent shootings of police by black men in Dallas, the St. Louis suburb of Ballwin and Baton Rouge, where the shooter was a Kansas City resident.

But the political recriminations have been especially strong in Missouri, where the Brown shooting in August 2014 honed the nation’s attention on racial relations with police. Brown, 18, was shot after struggling with an officer who confronted him in a street after a convenience store theft. A state grand jury declined to press charges against the officer, and the U.S. Justice Department later cleared him, concluding that evidence backed his claim that he had acted in self-defense.

The governor’s race is wide open because Democratic incumbent Jay Nixon, who was sharply criticized after the sometimes violent protests in Ferguson, has run into term limits. Attorney General Chris Koster, the most well-funded Democrat seeking to succeed Nixon, has avoid-

The more intense Republican primary includes Hanaway, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, former Navy SEAL officer Eric Greitens and former Marine and businessman John Brunner. All have criticized Nixon for not being more publicly visible or forceful in Ferguson or the University of Missouri when protests occurred.

Hanaway is campaigning with a slogan of “Make Missouri Safe & Strong.” She wants harsher mandatory sentences for people who target law officers and stronger community policing. She says she would have imposed a 9 p.m. curfew for Ferguson protesters – three hours earlier than Nixon’s deadline.

Kinder has called Nixon’s slow deployment of the National Guard in Ferguson a “disgrace.”

And he said University of Missouri football players who threatened to boycott games during campus protests should have faced the loss of their scholarships.

The tough talk has failed to address the concerns of many minorities, said state Rep. Shamed Dogan, the lone black Republican in the 197-seat Missouri Legislature.

Black residents, who represent nearly 12 percent of Missouri’s population, are heavily concentrated in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas that tend to vote overwhelmingly for Democrats.

Candidates often can win Republican votes by denouncing crime and disorder in the big cities, said Joseph Cernik, chairman of the Public Affairs and Administration Department at Lindenwood University in St. Charles.

Maxine Rader, a local Republican chairwoman from rural Barton County, has watched the protests from afar via TV. If demonstrators start disrupting things again, the next governor “just needs to crack down on it. I don’t think we need to meet their demand,” Rader said.

Postcards of DeKalb gives residents glimpse into the past

news@dailychronicle.com DeKalb County residents took a step back in time and saw how much the area has changed, thanks to an impressive collection of postcards dating back to about 1900. On Sunday, DeKalb County native Peter Espe gave his presentation, Postcards of DeKalb, which is made up of about 165 postcards, at the Glidden Homestead.

“It’s important to look at the images and see how the cities and buildings have changed,” Espe said. “As of 1910, there were 600 million postcards mailed. They were what today email or text messages are. They were just quick messages that people sent.”

Espe, a retired interior design professional who now lives in San Francisco, grew up on a farm between Lee and Steward. His interest in collecting postcards began in 2004, when he was visiting Rochelle and found some old postcards in an antique shop.

This sparked an intense interest, and Espe began to scour eBay for postcards. He’s collected both posted and blank postcards from Lee, Oregon, Dixon, Steward, Waterman, Malta, Amboy, Sycamore and Paw Paw, among other communities in DeKalb County. He also collects postcards from San Francisco, and his total collection numbers about 7,000. His oldest DeKalb County postcard is from the 1950s.

“I hope people take away a different idea of what the city looked like at one time. Some of the changes haven’t always been good, like what happened with the Glidden Hotel, which was a three-story building that burned down in 1962,” Espe said. “I hope someone sees something in the architecture that I see. I look more at the details. There’s a lot more that people don’t focus on. The details tell another story.”

Rob Glover, executive director of the Glidden Homestead, said a lot of community members are interested in the structural history of DeKalb and enjoy seeing the old buildings and landscapes.

“You can see how much things have changed. [DeKalb] looked a lot different then, like Lincoln Highway, NIU and the library, as well as buildings that don’t exist anymore,” Glover explained.

“We have two barbed wire factories that exist, as well as the Glidden Homestead and the Ellwood House. We’re lucky to have this history here.”

her childhood when she would visit her grandparents who lived in DeKalb.

“I really enjoy [the presentation],” the Esmond resident said. “A lot has changed. I remember the houses that used to be along Lincoln Highway that are now gone. It’s sad because some of them were really nice looking houses.”

Mary Ann Blindt recently moved to

Sycamore, and she wanted to come to the presentation because she hoped to learn more about DeKalb County’s history.

“I’m trying to learn things about the area, and I like postcards,” she said.

“I thought the presentation was great.

[Peter] was very organized and he had a lot of interesting things to say. I was surprised that there were so many post-

cards from such small towns.”

Elsa Espe, Peter’s cousin and a DeKalb County native, said there are so many things she didn’t know about DeKalb and thought the presentation was very interesting.

“There are just so many changes. I remember coming to DeKalb to shop, and a lot is different. I hate to see the old buildings torn down,” she said.

Peter Espe said he thought that everyone in the audience enjoyed the presentation and hopes they can better appreciate what they have around them.

“Every city loses important buildings. Too many people see significant buildings as being disposable due to progress,” he said. “Back in the ’60s, they thought new is better and old is something we don’t need anymore. In doing that, they lost a lot of history.”

Linda Fulton, who is on the Glidden Homestead board of directors, said she thought it was very interesting how Espe was able to evaluate the date of the postcards based on landscaping and landmarks in the photos.

“This is the history of the community and the public is more interested in ancestry and history,” she said. “It’s important to learn about the history of this community. We don’t recognize how really important the invention of barbed wire was.”

“Ricky is Ricky,” his uncle said.

A heart transplant in April made sure of that, a fact not lost on the minds of strangers, family and friends who attended a fundraiser Saturday to help cover transplant-related expenses for Ricky’s family.

Almost 20 bikers rode 70 miles to the Moose Lodge, 1231 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, where more than 150 people gathered to support the De La Cruz family.

“I wish I had words because it’s so unbelievable and it doesn’t seem like [the community support] stops,” Ricky’s mother, Dori De La Cruz said. “And I feel like it’s not just for Ricky, it’s for the whole community.

group of people together.”

Ricky was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a defect that put him through several surgeries. He had been in and out of the hospital once a month since October, until doctors told the family he would

need to stay in March. A heart had been found.

“We were sort of shocked,” Dori said. “We thought we were going to be waiting at home for a transplant, but it came faster. We were nervous, but excited at the same time.”

Because of the transplant, Ricky can return to school to see his friends.

Most of all, he can take in more oxygen, allowing him to be more active and giving the family a breath of fresh air.

“He doesn’t sleep anymore,” Dori said. “He used to be where he would sleep all day. He’s up and doing more family activities.”

All funds will go to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association.

A Malta man who pleaded no contest to sexual assault and child pornography charges plans to challenge his conviction in a Wisconsin court.

Ross A. Adee, 42, of the 22600 block of Schafer Road, Malta, filed paperwork seeking post-conviction relief July 11, court records show. He was convicted June 24 in a Wisconsin court of possession of child pornography and conspiracy to com- Ross Adee mit sexual assault of a child.

His attorney, Robert Keller, could not be reached for comment.

Adee was transferred Thursday to Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin, where he will begin his six-year prison sentence with no opportunity for early release. Once Adee has completed his sentence, he must serve an additional six years of parole and a separate

six years of probation.

Police said Adee traveled Aug. 10 to Racine, Wisconsin, to meet with who he thought was a Wisconsin mother and her two underage daughters for sex. He was originally charged with possession of a switchblade, first-degree child sex assault, possession of child pornography and possession of narcotics, according to court documents.

Adee must register as a sex offender for life and be assessed for sex offender treatment.

He is barred from having contact with anyone younger than 18 and may not work or volunteer with any minors, court records show. Additionally, Adee cannot possess any sexually explicit material, court records show.

Although there is no opportunity for Adee to shorten his sentence with good behavior, if he does not comply with the terms of his sentence, it could be extended.

Should Adee choose to serve his probation at his Malta home, he would be required to register as a sex offender in Illinois.

DeKalb City Council to discuss voting procedures Jayla

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb’s City Council is scheduled to discuss its voting process when measures are presented, especially in light of the mayor’s recent vote that created a tie and killed a proposal.

The issue is on the agenda for Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, which is held an hour before the regular council meeting.

City staff stated the reason for revising the voting requirements, which are set forth by state law and city ordinances, in a July 20 memo addressed to the mayor and aldermen.

“It is hoped that this discussion will lead to the development of an ordinance that will clarify the city’s voting standards,” the memo from the city’s clerk, manager and attorney stated.

At the July 11 meeting, aldermen voted, 4-3, on a special-use permit request.

But it was not granted after Mayor

John Rey cast a ‘no’ vote, creating a tie. A tie vote means the measure fails, City Attorney Dean Frieders said.

During Monday’s regular council meeting, aldermen are expected to give final consideration to plans to increase ambulance and video-gaming device fees.

Also, the agenda calls for approval of spending up to $82,538 on two new police cars.

Proposals are on the agenda to waive competitive bidding on the purchase of water meters and radio transmitters.

The costs aldermen will consider are not to exceed $75,000. They also are scheduled to decide if up to $60,000 may be spent to buy land for the Kishwaukee Kiwanis bike-path project, which connects city thoroughfares to the Northern Illinois University campus.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner is working with the Illinois State Police on how to handle a proposal to make marijuana possession in small amounts punishable only with fines under a bill he appears poised to sign.

The legislation, which also sets a standard for what’s considered too high to drive, Gov. Bruce includes stronger pro- Rauner visions the Republican governor suggested to lawmakers last year as a condition for signing off on removing jail time for having 10 grams or less of pot. A chief sponsor of this year’s bill, Sen. Heather Steans, a Chicago Democrat, said the Rauner administration has assured her he will sign the bill but is waiting until next month to give law enforcement time to prepare for its implementation.

The bill comes as many states reconsider whether jail is the most appropriate punishment for petty pot offenses. If signed, Illinois would

be the 17th state – and third largest – to treat possession of marijuana in small amounts as a civil offense rather than a criminal one, according to the Marijuana Policy Project, which tracks legislation on the topic nationally. New York and California are among the states that have made the change.

Rauner has indicated support for reducing penalties for marijuana offenses, but his spokeswoman said in a statement he’s still reviewing the bill.

“Part of the review process is working with the Illinois State Police to ensure that the law can be implemented in the best interests of the public,” Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said. The state police declined to comment.

Lawmakers sent Rauner the bill June 16 and he has 60 days from that date to take action.

The proposal passed with bipartisan support, but some in law enforcement have reservations. Greg Sullivan, the executive director of the Illinois Sheriff’s Association, said the bill doesn’t differentiate between minors and adults who are caught with small amounts of pot, and that the

New safety improvements include crossing gates, signals that communicate with train crews, vehicle sensors in pavement and signs warning of train speeds faster than 80 mph, The State Journal-Register reported.

Illinois Commerce Commission rail safety program administrator Mike Stead said the improvements are a regulatory heads-up to motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists who are used to years of trains operating at much slower speeds.

“The time and distance relative to conventional-speed trains and higher-speed trains is significant,” Stead said.

Illinois transportation officials have set a goal of Amtrak speeds up

to 110 mph on much of the Chicago-St. Louis corridor in 2017. The trains currently travel at a top speed of 79 mph between Chicago and St. Louis with the exception of a high-speed demonstration section between Pontiac and Dwight. Speeds of 110 mph began there in the fall of 2012.

Stead said crossing-signal warning times that are currently 20 to 30 seconds will near 90 seconds at highway crossings when 110-mph Amtrak service begins.

“It gives you an idea how much time and distance is required at faster speeds,” Stead said. “The highway user is going to have to train themselves to believe the warning is accurate. They won’t see the train coming.”

Suspect in 4 bank robberies held in June heist

CHICAGO – Authorities said a Chicago man is a suspect in the robbery of a bank on the city’s southwest side.

Willie Weathersby is charged with robbing a branch of Fifth Third Bank on June 28. An FBI spokesman said the 28-year-old Weathersby made a court appearance Saturday and was ordered held pending another hearing.

The Chicago Tribune reported records show Weathersby was released from federal custody Sept. 9, 2015, after serving time for a 2012 robbery of a Chicago bank.

Authorities said Weathersby was arrested Friday after an attempted bank robbery at Royal Savings Bank in the South Chicago neighborhood.

Southern Illinois lacks hospitals with trauma centers

CARBONDALE – Southern Illinois residents continue to lack easy access to hospitals with trauma centers that offer specialized care for severe injuries.

There aren’t any trauma centers south of Springfield, which puts Southern Illinois in a trauma desert, The Southern Illinoisan reported. For many Illinois residents, the closest trauma center is located in another state, such as Indiana or Missouri.

Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Melaney Arnold said hospitals voluntarily become trauma centers. To be designated as a Level I or Level II trauma center, the department requires the hospital to have sophisticated equipment and qualified staff, such as subspecialty surgeons.

BERLIN – A Syrian man killed a woman with a machete and wounded two others Sunday outside a bus station in the southwestern German city of Reutlingen before being arrested. Police said there were no indications pointing to terrorism.

WASHINGTON – Five years ago, Debbie Wasserman Schultz was put in charge of the Democratic National Committee to usher in a new era for the party. Now, Wasserman Schultz is on her way out, after the publication of emails that suggest Democratic officials favored Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders during the nominating contests.

The scandal is rocking the party on the eve of their convention, and the fall is a stunning one for the tough-talking Florida representative who became the first woman elected to chair the DNC. Two other women have served in the role but were appointed.

On Sunday, Wasserman Schultz announced she would step down as DNC chairwoman at the end of the party’s convention, after some of the 19,000 emails, presumably stolen from the DNC by hackers, were posted to the website Wikileaks.

To Sanders’ supporters, the email scandal proved what

they long suspected: The Democratic Party had become a clubby establishment that was resistant to change and reluctant to embrace a more progressive agenda.

For years though, it seemed, Wasserman Schultz was unstoppable.

At 26, she was the youngest woman elected to a seat in the Florida’s House. Then came the Florida Senate, and in 2005, she was elected to the U.S. House to represent South Florida. It was there Wasserman Schultz earned her reputation as a workhorse and outspoken liberal willing to spar with Republicans on television.

By her mid-40s, Wasserman Schultz had survived breast cancer and was raising three kids – all the while serving in the House and raising millions for the Democratic Party.

By 2011, President Barack Obama recommended she take control of the DNC, even though she had backed Hillary Clinton in the 2008 primary.

Perhaps part of the calculation was that Wasserman Schultz represented South Florida, a Democrat-rich area of a critical

swing state in the upcoming election. As a Jew and strong advocate for Israel, she also provided a bulwark for Obama against Republican efforts at the time to paint him as anti-Israel.

Wasserman Schultz was born in 1966 on Long Island, New York. According to her online biography, she graduated from the University of Florida. She married Steve Schultz and resides with her family in Weston, a Fort Lauderdale suburb.

Worth noting is whom Wasserman Schultz replaced at the DNC five years ago: Tim Kaine, who is now Clinton’s running mate.

“As Chairman Kaine departs, new leadership must come on,” Vice President Joe Biden wrote in 2011 to DNC members.

Wasserman Schultz was also considered a close friend of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was critically wounded during a shooting rampage in Tucson. Wasserman Schultz was reportedly in Giffords’ hospital room when she first woke up.

Heimberger said he could not reveal details of the document yet because there were “many more terabytes” of information to evaluate, but described the gunman as a “devoted player” of group internet “killer games” pitting virtual shooters against each other.

Weapons are strictly controlled in Germany and police are still trying to determine exactly how the shooter obtained the Glock 17 used in the attack.

Heimberger said it’s “very likely” the suspect purchased the weapon illegally online on the “darknet,” a restricted access computer network often used by criminals. He said the weapon had been rendered unusable and sold as a prop before being restored to its original function.

The shooter’s father saw a video of the start of his son’s rampage on social media and went to police as it was taking place, Heimberger said, adding that the family was still emotionally not up to questioning by police.

MUNICH – The teenager behind the deadly shooting rampage in Munich was a withdrawn loner obsessed with playing “killer” video games in his bedroom, a victim of bullying who suffered from panic attacks set off by contacts with other people, investigators said Sunday, adding that he had planned the attack for a year.

Law enforcement officials piecing together a portrait of the 18-year-old shooter said he was seeing a doctor up until last month for treatment of depression and psychiatric problems that began in 2015 with inpatient hospital care followed by outpatient visits.

They said medication for his problems had been found his room. But toxicological and autopsy results were still not available, so it’s not yet clear whether he was taking the medicine when he went on his shooting rampage Friday, killing nine people and leaving dozens wounded.

The 18-year-old German-Iranian, identified only as David S. because of Germany privacy laws, had earlier been described by investigators as being bullied by schoolmates at least once four years ago and being fascinated by previous mass shootings.

But none of those killed were known to him, investigators said.

Late Sunday, police said they had taken in for questioning a friend of the shooter who might have known of the attack plan. Further details were not immediately available, but Germany’s dpa news agency reported the 16-year-old boy had gone to police himself after the act.

Some 1,500 people gathered at the scene of the shooting Sunday evening, lighting candles and placing flowers in tribute to the victims. In France, where scores have been killed in six extremist attacks since the beginning of 2015, the Eiffel Tower was lit in the German national colors of red, black and gold.

The attack Friday took place on the fifth anniversary of the killing of 77 people by Norwegian right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik, whose victims included dozens of young people. Investigators said the Munich shooter had researched that slaughter online and had visited the site of a previous school shooting in the German town of Winnenden last year.

“He had been planning this crime since last summer,” said Robert Heimberger, Bavaria’s top official, citing a “manifesto” linked to the shooting found in the gunman’s locked room in the apartment he shared with his

Watching democracy slip away This is the way democracy dies – not in the streets of Turkey, not because of a coup, but in its aftermath and in the halls of power.

And our own nation is standing by, watching it happen. Watching while Turkey’s president, who purports to be a democrat, wipes out his nation’s once free and independent judiciary, just as he cowed much of its free and independent media.

The attempted coup last week has given the autocratic Recep Tayyip Erdogan a pretext to decimate his nation’s justice system – a process that had begun long before the events of Friday. The president almost immediately announced his intention to purge 2,745 judges and prosecutors. By Sunday homes were being searched, the arrests had begun.

In recent years Turkey’s Constitutional Court has been the only thing that has stood between Erdogan and his continuing assault on the news media – those not already jailed or terrified into submission.

And what has been the U.S. response thus far?

Try these words from Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday: “I think the Turkish government itself is trying to figure out who is involved and how.”

If only. Erdogan immediately came up with the names of 2,745 judges who needed to go. By Monday some 8,777 civil servants – police, military police, 30 governors, 16 legal advisers – were added to the purge list. That must have be one speedy “investigation.”

On Monday, Kerry added, “Obviously, a lot of people have been arrested and arrested very quickly. The level of [international] vigilance and scrutiny is obviously going to be significant in the days ahead.”

Kerry is no naïf. He knows the game that is afoot here. Just as surely as he knows that Turkey is a NATO member and an important ally in the fight against the Islamic State.

It wouldn’t be the first time the U.S. has looked the other way while a despot tightens his grip on power because that despot remains strategically important. But let there be no mistake, this time it is happening on the Obama administration’s watch and watching democracy slip away in Turkey is nothing short of tragic.

But what if there is a polar-opposite view of the current state of things, an analysis of our domestic and foreign affairs that suggests things aren’t so bad? Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, certainly has a different view than Trump; she can point to a raft of statistics that show the gloom and doom in which her opponent trades is more than a bit exaggerated.

Let’s start with security, which has been a top concern among Trump’s supporters. Several speakers, notably former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, devoted their time at the podium to nerve-fraying rants about the threat of Islamist terrorism. Others insisted that Trump would restore “law and order” to a land where precious little of that now exists.

Certainly, attacks by radical jihadists have frightened American voters, pushing even some dovish liberals to call for a more aggressive military

response to the Islamic State and its followers. Still, terrorist attacks on U.S. soil are hardly routine. In the years since 9/11, fewer than 100 people have been killed in assaults here at home by terrorists associated with radical Islam. For the sake of comparison, more than 38,000 people were killed in car accidents in 2015 alone.

As for ordinary crime, the United States is much safer than it used to be – even factoring in the recent uptick in homicides in a few American cities. In 2015, the violent crime rate continued to decline, according to FBI statistics, as it has for the last three decades. The rate of violent crime in the country is about half what it was in 1990.

What about police officers? Aren’t they victims of what some have called a “war on police”? Certainly, there is no overstating the sense of siege that has overwhelmed police departments around the country after separate barbaric attacks killed five officers in Dallas and three in Baton Rouge.

But the data don’t suggest any war on police. In 2015, according to the Officers Down Memorial Page, 39 officers were killed by gunfire. In 1990, 60 officers were lost to gunfire; in 1995, 70.

Again, the broader trends seem headed toward police work as safer, not less so.

Fear, though, isn’t the only emotion that infuses the GOP universe. There is anger, too – a rage against lost status and imagined slights that has found a convenient target in Clinton, Trump’s rival. Though she has never even been charged with any crime – FBI director James Comey criticized her for being “extremely careless” with her emails – she has been indicted and convicted

by Republican activists, whose chant on the convention floor, “Lock Her Up! Lock Her Up,” was chilling.

This fearful and angry worldview cannot be attributed simply to political polarization. Nor is it merely the inevitable consequence of years of escalating rhetoric by pols seeking money and votes, though that has certainly played a part. This is a sign of something deeper and more troubling: a nation whose citizens are separated by a lightyears-wide chasm that seemingly can’t be bridged.

Polls suggest mistake-filled convention won’t doom Trump

For decades, political conventions have been derided as miserably predictable events that always devolve into monotonous made-for-TV affairs. Once you get past Barack Obama’s “United States of America” speech in 2004, Pat Buchanan’s thundering culture-wars declaration in 1992, Mario Cuomo’s 1984 “Tale of Two Cities” masterpiece or Ted Kennedy’s breathtaking “Dream Never Dies” manifesto in 1980, the only political players that have mattered at contrived conventions over the past 30 years have been the nominees themselves.

1976 was the last time a convention defined a primary battle, and party apparatchiks and eventual nominees have preferred it that way. Maybe that is because Ronald Reagan’s remarkable “Challenge” speech so completely overshadowed Gerald Ford that the incumbent president still found himself 13 points behind Jimmy Carter following the GOP’s Kansas City convention.

Reagan, on the other hand, had used the unscripted moment Ford gave him at the end of the convention to plant the seeds for a political revolution that

would put him in the White House four years later and define American politics for the next quarter-century.

After 1976, party bosses took great care in choreographing national conventions while squeezing every last drop of spontaneity out of these dreadful events. The strategy was successful in maintaining political order and boring most Americans to tears every four years.

Enter Donald Trump.

The Manhattan developer has spent the past year confounding critics while adapting chaos theory to U.S. politics.

Trump’s approach to campaigning has borrowed much from P.T. Barnum, who is famously quoted as saying, “I don’t care what they say about me so long as they spell my name right.” The media has done just that as Trump has seen his political fortunes rise, while insulting John McCain’s war service, picking a fight with Fox News, accusing George W. Bush of being responsible for 9/11 and suggesting more than once that Barack Obama is conspiring with the Islamic State and cop-killers.

After each manufactured crisis, Trump extends his middle finger to an outraged ruling class, confounds all critics and sees his poll numbers

rise even higher. Trump has not only survived the chaos he has created. He has thrived in the swirling storm of increasingly bizarre controversies stirred up by the candidate himself.

As Republicans headed to Cleveland to anoint Trump as their nominee, supporters of the political rookie assured Americans that their man was going mainstream and bringing a new professionalism to the campaign. Instead, each day at the Republican National Convention has devolved into chaos.

Day One at the Quicken Loans Arena started with an ugly floor fight that saw Trump forces ramrodding rules through a divided convention.

That night, Melania Trump dazzled the GOP crowd there until it was discovered that her speech borrowed many of its most moving lines from Michelle Obama. Day Two was consumed by the campaign’s clumsy handling of the plagiarism story and a jagged prime-time schedule, while Wednesday will remembered in political circles for some time as the day Team Trump handed the convention hall’s microphone over to a bitter rival who used his time to launch his next campaign.

The national media has stared at the entire spectacle with mouths

agape, with preeminent historian Michael Beschloss observing that he had never seen anything quite like the Cruz chaos in all his years following politics.

Dire predictions about the nominee’s chances predictably flowed from the frazzled pundits and political pros who had discounted Trump’s chances from the first days of his campaign.

But NBC News legend Tom Brokaw had a different take after Ted Cruz’s bizarre turn on a blinking convention stage. The veteran newsman warned that the grim forecasts concerning Trump sounded like tired conventional wisdom from journalists reporting from a convention unlike any other in a generation.

Should Trump’s flurry of miscues doom his presidential run? Of course.

But polls taken this week seem to suggest that what Americans want in a presidential campaign is not competence and consistency, but rather a reality show spectacle that keeps them glued to their TVs. Perhaps the political professionals have it all wrong once again. Just maybe the best made-for-TV convention is the one where viewers are left wondering how the hell it’s all going to end.

It’s often noted that liberals and conservatives tend to see the world differently. But if the Republican National Convention is any indication, liberals and conservatives inhabit not just different worlds but different galaxies – far, far away from each other.

The world in which Republicans live is a grim and frightening place, a landscape of constant terror and crime, of collapsing moral values and inept and unethical government elites. The nation they live in is in free fall, no longer respected by allies or feared by enemies, no longer a leader in world affairs.

The Republican presidential nominee, Donald J. Trump, has said that the U.S. military is “depleted,” that American cities have “exploded” with crime, that American leaders are “stupid.” He put it this way in a recent speech: “If we don’t get tough, and if we don’t get smart, and fast, we’re not going to have our country anymore. There will be nothing, absolutely nothing, left.”

It’s no wonder that Trump’s campaign theme is “Make America Great Again.” If the nation is coming unglued, there should be plenty of support for a man promising to restore

DeKalb Public Library plans Harry Potter party DAILY CHRONICLE

The DeKalb Public Library will host its annual Harry Potter party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. It will be a magical adventure in the new library with new activities and mystery rooms. Attendees will begin their journey in the lobby where they will receive a map and get sorted into a house.

Participants will travel through the Floo Network to get to their destinations, meet Harry Potter and Hermione Granger (bring a camera), scavenge in the Forbidden Forest, enjoy snacks in the Great Hall, attempt a Tri-Wizard Challenge, de-gnome the garden, attend Potions Class, learn about Fantastic Beasts and Where to

Find Them in DeKalb County, and more. Free copies of The Quibbler, written by local witches and wizards, also will be available.

The Beasts and Where to Find Them in DeKalb County lesson, led by the Midwest Museum of Natural History, will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Flourish & Blotts’ Booksale will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby. Sycamore church history discussed at brown bag DAILY CHRONICLE August is an important time for Sycamore’s Israel of God’s Church W.H.A. This church, founded in 1887, is located in 13 cities in seven states. Its national headquarters are in Sycamore, and members host an annual conference every August that draws between 250 and 400 people over a six-day period.

Longtime church member Nathan Thomas will talk about the history of George W. the Israel of God’s Church, Flowers at 248 North Ave., as part of the Sycamore History Museum’s Aug. 4 brown bag lunch program.

Thomas will explore the history of the church, which was formally organized in 1891 in St. Louis. Apostle George W. Flowers was the first visible leader.

He came to Sycamore in 1909 and lived there until his death in 1923. He is featured in the Sycamore History Museum’s current exhibit, “Faces of Sycamore.”

Thomas also will discuss how the church has grown over the years.

Brown bag lunches are at noon on the first Thursday of the month at the Sycamore History Museum, 1730 N. Main St. The program is free and open to the public; donations are welcome. Coffee and cookies are provided.

Pritchard, Syverson host annual senior fair DAILY CHRONICLE

State Rep. Robert Pritchard, state Sen. Dave Syverson, the Family Service Agency’s Senior Services and the Voluntary Action Center invite residents to the annual Senior Citizen’s Health Fair. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, July 28, at DeKalb High School, 501 W. Dresser Road. The fair is free

and open to the public.

Screenings offered at this year’s fair will include: body mass index testing, blood pressure, diabetes prevention, glucose testing, ear wax screenings and hearing screenings.

There also will be a presentation at 10 a.m. on federal and state Veterans Affairs programs.

Interested veterans are asked to bring their DD 214 forms and driv-

er’s licenses to obtain official certification from the IDVA if they wish to receive the “veteran” designation on their licenses.

Seniors who attend can register for a door prize.

Also, bags will be given to seniors at the door and free refreshments will be provided.

DeKalb Sycamore Chevrolet Cadillac GMC invites the community and attendees of Sycamore’s Fizz Ehrler Memorial Turning Back Time Car Show to stop by their location for a pre-party car chow.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the dealership at 1925 Mercantile Drive in Sycamore.

There will be a hog roast, dyno machine, live music by DJ Dave, plus all of the classic cars on display.

All proceeds from the event will benefit charities in the DeKalb-Sycamore area.

Join the Somonauk Education Foundation on Saturday for the first Mid Summer Showdown at the Sandwich Fairgrounds. There will be entertainment and events for all ages inside the fairground’s track.

The day starts with the noon opening of the beer tent followed by the car show at 2 p.m. The band Joker’s Rival will play at 3 p.m. on the Superior Beverage sound stage.

Bring the kids out for the Kids’ Pedal Pull in front of the bleachers which starts at 4 p.m. with sign-up for the five weight classes starting at 3 p.m.

Each participant will receive a ribbon and the top puller in each weight class will receive a trophy.

The big event of the day is the Illini State Pullers kicking off at 5:30 p.m. with the tractor and truck pulls.

During the pulls, SEF will hold a Calcutta, where spectators can bid on their favorite driver or truck.

After the pulls, the band Stroker Red will perform on the Superior Beverage sound stage.

Admission for the entire day is $10. Children age 12 and younger get in free. Wristbands will be used so attendees can leave and re-enter. Food and drinks will be available. No coolers or outside alcohol will be allowed.

All proceeds benefit the Somonauk Schools and scholarships for graduating seniors.

SEF needs volunteers to help sell wristbands at the main entrance and check wristbands at the track entrance. The shifts are for two hours.

Summitt’s reach felt in DeKalb by former NIU coach Jane Albright

If anyone knows the number of doors the late Pat Summitt opened in women’s college basketball since the 1970s, former Northern Illinois University head coach Jane Albright would certainly know.

“There’s like 78-80 coaches in the Lady Volunteers’ family tree,” Albright recalled the other day.

According to CBS Sports, 78 people who were mentored by the University of Tennessee’s iconic educator are currently coaching or working administrative jobs in the women’s game.

Albright is one of them.

Opportunity doors, scheduling doors, personal favor doors, Summit unlocked them for her team, her family, her game.

Entering her 33rd season as a Division I head coach with 501 career victories and ninth year at the University of Nevada-Reno, Albright readily and fondly acknowledged that Summitt opened the door for her at age 28.

She also said how grateful she was that so many things had fallen into place in reference to head coaching jobs at NIU, Wisconsin, Wichita State and now UN-R – not to forget the two years as a grad assistant at Tennessee.

At NIU, the women’s hoops legacy dates back to 1900. The modern age began in 1957-58 under the auspices of Hall of Famer Mary Bell. The zenith of that era would be Bell’s 1971-72 quintet that finished 15-3 and advanced to the Elite Eight of the AIAW national tournament.

But there’s no doubt the most productive Huskies basketball decade – women’s or men’s –would be the Albright era (188-110 record in 1984 to ’94) that featured five postseason appearances (NCAA in 1990, 1992, 1993, and 1994, NWIT in 1991), five 20-win campaigns, six All-America picks, three regular-season league titles, Top 20 rankings, state attendance records, etc.

IOC leaders stop short of complete ban of Russians

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Rejecting calls by anti-doping officials for a complete ban on Russia, Olympic leaders on Sunday gave individual sports federations the task of deciding which athletes should be cleared to compete in next month’s Rio de Janeiro Games.

Citing the need to protect the rights of individual athletes, the International Olympic Committee decided against taking the unprecedented step of excluding Russia’s entire team over allegations of state-sponsored doping. Instead, the IOC left it to 27 international sports federations to make the call on a case-by-case basis.

“Every human being is entitled to individual justice,” IOC President Thomas Bach said after the ruling of his 15-member executive board.

Bach said the IOC had decided instead on a set of “very tough criteria” that could dent Russia’s overall contingent and medal hopes in Rio, where the Olympics will open Aug. 5.

Under the measures, no Russian athletes who have ever had a doping violation will be allowed into the games, whether or not they have served a sanction, a rule that has not applied to athletes in other countries.

In addition, the international sports federations were ordered to check each Russian athlete’s drug-testing record, with only doping controls conducted outside Russia counting toward eligibility, before authorizing them to compete. Final entry is contingent on approval from an independent sports arbitrator.

The IOC decision was sharply criticized by anti-doping bodies as a sellout that undermines clean athletes and destroys the idea of a level playing field.

World Anti-Doping Agency President Craig Reedie said the organization is “disappointed that the IOC did not heed WADA’s executive committee recommendations” after investigators “exposed, beyond a reasonable doubt, a state-run doping program in Russia that seriously undermines the principles of clean sport.”

Albright’s Summitt connection dates back to 1975 as a sophomore guard when Appalachian State University played Summitt’s Volunteers in a tournament. In the post-game handshake line, Summitt approached and smiled at her.

“Pat said to me, ‘My mother’s maiden name was Albright.’ Right then I said to myself that I wanted to work for her and learn what she had to say about the game,” Albright said. “This lady is the real deal.”

Five years later, Albright was a high school coach in South Carolina.

“I took a day off, got in my car and drove to Knoxville,” Albright said. “I literally sat outside of her office door waiting for Pat to go to lunch. I wanted to ask if she had a grad assistant job (open).”

Albright didn’t get the job and was, “devastated.”

The next spring, the UT hire fell through and Summitt remembered Albright. The rest, cliché time, is history. No place for Sale’s childish act in kid’s game Two things are true: • The White Sox’ 1976 collared jerseys were, are and always will be hideous.

• Chris Sale’s standard fashion statement should include a bib, a rattle and a blankie.

Any hopes that the Sox’ ace might have finally grown up were put to rest Saturday, laid unceremoniously upon a pile of tattered uniforms. This time, his petulance was directed at the ’76 throwback jerseys the team was scheduled to wear that night as part of a promotional campaign. Sale, set to start against the Tigers, didn’t like them and reportedly let his displeasure be known via a sharp object – scissors, scythe, Bowie knife, who knows? No one involved is saying, but according to reports, he destroyed his and some teammates’ jerseys.

I think we’ve all been there. You don’t like something in the workplace, you cut it to ribbons. It’s why I always carry a pair of scissors. And a blowtorch.

Man’s eternal search for the bizarre, for the freakiest of freak shows, has finally ended. On Sunday, the Sox suspended Sale for five days, retroactive to his Saturday snip-fit.

That’s correct: A baseball team had to suspend a 27-year-old baseball player for cutting up uniforms he didn’t like.

Sale’s behavior was more suited to that of a 6-year-old, and if 6-year-olds

VIEWS Rick Morrissey were to rise up in tiny-fisted protest at that characterization, it would be totally understandable. Whatever Sale’s motivation was for his actions, it was dwarfed by his selfishness. The Sox sent him home before Saturday’s game, depriving a struggling team of having perhaps the best pitcher in baseball on the mound that night. In the process, he taxed a bullpen that didn’t need taxing. And who cares about the fans who came to watch him?

The Sox chalked up the incident to Sale’s intensity, saying the same fire that makes him a phenomenal pitcher made him slash the uniforms. He’s a leader, they insist.

If this is leadership, then Billy or Timmy for president!

The details of the incident are very hush-hush because of the “sanctity of what goes on in a big-league clubhouse,’’ according to general manager Rick Hahn. How sacred could a place be if it’s where teammates’ uniforms are shredded, leading to the suspension of the team’s best player?

You know, sacred places.

The causes Sale chooses to chain himself to are of the head-shaking variety. This time, it was an ugly, apparently uncomfortable jersey he was asked to wear once a season.

During spring training, it was Adam LaRoche’s son who got the benefit of the pitcher’s righteousness. Sale ripped vice president Ken Williams for a lack of transparency about why a 14-year-old kid shouldn’t be allowed in the Sox’ clubhouse all the time.

(One extremely sheer hint: Because no father should be able to bring his child to work with him on a regular basis.)

Last season, after being one of the players ejected for a brawl with the Royals, Sale went to the Kansas City clubhouse, looking to continue the fight. He was stopped at the door.

You’ve heard of the Napoleon complex, the need for vertically challenged people to prove themselves?

Maybe what we’re seeing here is a skinny person’s need to assert himself in all sorts of strange ways.

Hahn went out of his way Sunday to say that the latest incident does nothing to alter the fact that Sale is a great pitcher. This is true, but whether Hahn was saying so because he was concerned that the uniform-cutting event might scare teams away from trade talks is unknown.

We also don’t know if Sale is simply trying to get himself traded.

He hasn’t talked publicly about the incident yet. He wasn’t at The Cell on Sunday and won’t be eligible to pitch again until Thursday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Somehow, he has gotten it into his head that “acceptable behavior’’ has very broad borders. And, somehow, the Sox have allowed him to get away with his temper tantrums for years. It might seem like a small price to pay for greatness, but it doesn’t make the forehead slapping any more enjoyable. I wouldn’t trade him, but I do understand the impulse to start over.

I’ve complained for years about how boring the Sox are. This isn’t what I had in mind as an antidote.

The Sale situation has led to enough “cut’’ or “slice’’ puns to fill a stadium with groans. One media member innocently prefaced a question to manager Robin Ventura on Sunday with, “The old saw is that veterans are given more leeway …’’ and I thought, “Old saw – good one!”

But this really isn’t about cut-up uniforms. This is about a guy with immaturity issues.

Teammates, beware: If you pat Sale on the back for being true to his principles, make sure you stand back.

He might burp.

CHICAGO – The White Sox suspended their ace and picked up a pair of wins in their final at-bat.

It was quite a day for a fading team.

Melky Cabrera drove in Adam Eaton with a game-ending single in the ninth inning after closer David Robertson gave up three home runs in the top half to lead the Sox to a 5-4 victory hours after they suspended All-Star Chris Sale for five days on Sunday afternoon.

“Baseball is funny like that,” Eaton said. “It will beat you down, but then it will build you back up. It’s a love-hate relationship, for sure.”

There hasn’t been much love for the Sox since a 23-10 start. They’ve been in a tailspin ever since, but they at least got a bit of a break after dropping eight of nine.

Robertson got the win in both, though he didn’t feel like he deserved it after that rough ninth in the scheduled game.

“It’s absurd that I pitched that poorly,” he said.

The big news Sunday was Sale get-

ting suspended and fined one day after he was scratched from his scheduled start and sent home. The punishment was handed down after he destroyed collared throwback uniforms the team was scheduled to wear in this game. He is eligible to return Thursday against the crosstown Cubs at Wrigley Field, though general manager Rick Hahn would not say if the left-hander would start that game.

Robertson did his best to help the Sox get two victories on Sunday.

He came in with a 4-1 lead after Jose Quintana dominated into the seventh and Eaton hit a three-run homer.

Robertson (2-2) gave up a leadoff homer to Nick Castellanos and back-toback solo drives to pinch hitters Tyler Collins and Jarrod Saltalamacchia with two out.

Eaton led off the bottom half with a walk against Bruce Rondon (3-2), moved up on a sacrifice by Tim Anderson and came around on Cabrera’s sharp single to left.

That gave the Sox a four-game split against the playoff-contending Tigers.

“It was a tough pill to swallow,” Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said.

Quintana pitched three-hit ball over 62/3 scoreless innings, and Eaton made it 4-0 with his three-run homer against Anibal Sanchez in the second.

Detroit’s Andrew Romine hit a solo drive off Nate Jones in the eighth.

Sanchez allowed four runs and 10 hits in six innings. He settled down after Eaton went deep, but his future in the rotation is uncertain with Daniel Norris (oblique) and Jordan Zimmerman (neck) working their way back from injuries.

Andrew Romine hit a solo homer in the eighth against Nate Jones, but Victor Martinez struck out with runners on first and second to end that rally.

The Sox were forced to go with their bullpen after Sale got sent home Saturday, and the game was suspended after eight innings when it was interrupted three times by thunderstorms.

Nathan gets win in return to majors; Cubs beat Brewers with late rally

MILWAUKEE – Entering his first big league game in 16 months, Joe Nathan felt his heart racing while doing a full sprint to the mound.

Nathan has 377 career saves, and yet Sunday still felt as if it were Opening Day all over again for the 41-yearold reliever.

Anthony Rizzo’s three-run double in the seventh inning helped the Cubs overcome a four-run deficit and made a winner of Nathan in a 6-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

“It was Opening Day for me today, and the adrenaline was ... through the

roof. It was almost too much,” Nathan said. “I almost needed a defibrillator for the run into the mound.”

The six-time All-Star joined a club with World Series aspirations hoping to shore up its bullpen. The heart of the order finally came up with hits after the Cubs struggled with runners in scoring position against Brewers starter Junior Guerra.

That changed after Will Smith took over for Guerra with one out in the seventh.

Tommy La Stella, who went 3 for 3, had an RBI double before Smith (1-3) walked Kris Bryant to load the bases for third-place hitter Rizzo. He hit a 2-2 slider down in the zone into right-cen-

ter to clear the bases and give the Cubs a 5-4 lead.

Ben Zobrist’s RBI single scored Rizzo in the seventh and gave the Cubs a needed insurance run after closer Hector Rondon gave up a homer to Kirk Nieuwenhuis with two outs in the ninth to draw Milwaukee within a run.

Rondon struck out Jake Elmore looking for his 18th save.

“It was a complete victory. Rizzo had a couple tough at-bats but got a really big hit,” manager Joe Maddon said.

It completed a successful comeback from Tommy John surgery for Nathan, pitching in his first game in

the majors since April 2015. He was activated off the 60-day disabled list earlier Sunday.

Cubs pitchers labored for much of the afternoon, with starter Jon Lester struggling through four innings, allowing four hits and walking five.

Nathan gave up a leadoff triple to Jonathan Villar in the sixth and a walk before striking out 3-4-5 batters Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy and Chris Carter.

“Certainly a lot of moments in the game. We had some opportunities to add on runs in general, just to score runs and we didn’t capture those opportunities,” Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said.

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. – Two players who began their careers at opposite ends of the spectrum nearly three decades ago ended up in the same place Sunday – with their names etched on plaques at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

For Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza, the culmination of their long journeys was tinged with tears all around.

“I stand up here humbled and overwhelmed,” Griffey said, staring out at his family and tens of thousands of fans.

“I can’t describe how it feels.”

The two became a piece of history on their special day. Griffey, the first pick of the 1987 amateur draft, became the highest pick ever inducted. Piazza, a 62nd-round pick the next year – No. 1,390 – is the lowest pick to enter the Hall of Fame.

Griffey played 22 big-league seasons with the Mariners, Reds and White Sox and was selected on a record 99.32 percent of ballots cast, an affirmation of sorts for his clean performance during baseball’s so-called Steroids Era. A 13-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove Award winner in center field, Griffey hit 630 home runs, sixth all-time, and drove in 1,836 runs. He also was the American League MVP in 1997, drove in at least 100 runs in eight seasons, and won seven Silver Slugger Awards.

Griffey, who fell only three votes shy of being the first unanimous selection, hit 417 of his 630 homers and won all 10 of his Gold Gloves with the Seattle Mariners. He played the first 11 seasons of his career with the Mariners and led them to the playoffs for the first two

Seaver in 1992.

Piazza played 16 years with the Dodgers, Marlins, Mets, Padres and Athletics and hit 427 home runs, including a major league record 396 as a catcher. A 12time All-Star, Piazza won 10 Silver Slugger Awards and finished in the top five of his league’s MVP voting four times.

Perhaps even more impressive, Piazza, a .308 career hitter, posted six seasons with at least 30 home runs, 100 RBIs and a .300 batting average (all other catchers in baseball history combined have posted nine such seasons).

Although the Dodgers gave him his start, Piazza found a home in New York when he was traded to the Mets in May 1998.

Three years later, he became a hero to the hometown fans with perhaps the most notable home run of his career.

His two-run shot in the eighth inning at Shea Stadium lifted the Mets to a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves in the first sporting event played in New York after the 9/11 terror attacks.

Piazza paid tribute to that moment.

“To witness the darkest evil of the human heart ... will be forever burned in my soul,” Piazza said. “But from tragedy and sorrow came bravery, love, compassion, character and eventual healing.

“Many of you give me praise for the two-run home run in the first game back on Sept. 21st, but the true praise belongs to police, firefighters, first responders that knew that they were going to die, but went forward anyway. I pray that we never forget their sacrifice.”

Attendance was estimated at about 50,000 by the Hall of Fame, tying 1999 for second-most all time.

Busch completes weekend sweep with Brickyard win

INDIANAPOLIS – Kyle Busch won the Brickyard 400 on Sunday to make it a clean sweep at Indianapolis.

He led a race-record 149 of the 170 laps and beat Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth to the finish line by 2.126 seconds. Jimmie Johnson was third, 2.638 seconds behind the defending Sprint Cup champ – thanks to the double overtime forced by three late crashes. Busch became the first NASCAR driver to sweep the Xfinity Series and Cup poles and races on the same weekend. Five-time race winner Jeff Gordon finished 13th after coming out of retirement to replace Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt is fighting concussion-like symptoms and has not yet been cleared by doctors to drive.

Before teams arrived Thursday night in Indy, all the talk was about Stewart’s farewell and Gordon’s comeback.

Even during the drivers’ meeting, Gordon and Stewart were front and center. Gordon delivered a moving speech in which he thanked Stewart for the impact he has made on the sport and ended with a standing ovation for the threetime Cup champ and two-time Brickyard winner. Afterward, the two drivers drove around the track together, likely for the final time on their home track.

for 14 laps after his first pit stop, regained it when race leader Brad Keselowski pitted then gave it up again for only five laps when he made his second pit stop. Everyone else spent the day chasing Busch. The No. 18 car was so good that Roger Penske’s drivers started the day on a different strategy. The goal was to stretch out their runs long enough that they would have to make one fewer pit stop.

It didn’t work. Logano finished seventh and Keselowski wound up 17th.

The only real challenge for Busch came with the series of late crashes that delayed his fourth trip to victory lane.

It started with Carl Edwards’ car wiggling in the first turn on a restart with seven laps to go. His car slid up the track, hitting Keselowski and catching Ryan Blaney, Ryan Newman and Danica Patrick.

Occasional stomach growling is entirely normal. In fact, if you have abdominal pain, doctors worry more when the gurgling is absent than when it is present.

Hearing no bowel sounds in someone who has abdominal pain could be an indication of a serious condition that has signaled peristalsis in the gut to stop.

Such conditions include an inflamed pancreas, inflammation of the lining of the abdomen or a tear in the wall of the intestine.

Also, most people who come out of major surgery have exceptionally quiet digestive tracts. That’s because normal movement of the bowel wall temporarily stops after a major trauma such as surgery.

If you have a partial or complete intestinal blockage or obstruction, the intestines try to push fluid, gas and waste products past the blocked area. This can cause high-pitched sounds heard by the doctor through the stethoscope, but they may not be audible to you.

Finally, a noisy abdomen does not necessarily mean you are hungry. It’s simple: You’re hungry when you are actually feeling hungry, regardless of whether your stomach is growling.

Dear Dr. K: As I get older, it seems my stomach is more likely to make growling noises. Why does it do this, and what can I do about it? It’s embarrassing.

Dear Reader: Maybe your stomach is trying to talk to my stomach. My stomach is periodically trying to talk to someone, that’s for sure.

Stomach noises happen in everyone, although they seem to plague some people more than others. It’s not just an issue with older people; it happens all the time, to people of all ages. Doctors put weird (often Latin) names on things. We call the gurgling noises borborygmi.

For centuries, people have associated stomach growling with hunger. But do these noises always mean you’re hungry?

I’ll come back to that later. And could these growling noises ever be a sign of illness?

Yes, but uncommonly.

First, a little anatomy. The abdomen (the belly) is where the noise is coming from. The abdomen includes most of the digestive system: the stomach and intestines.

The mouth, throat and esophagus (the swallowing tube) are the parts of the digestive system that lie above the abdomen.

The digestive system is really a series of tubes. It moves food from the mouth to the stomach and small intestine, where it is digested. Then it moves the waste material (what’s left after digestion) down the large intestine and out of the body.

The movement of food, and then of waste, occurs by the process called peristalsis. Peristalsis is an organized, sequential squeezing of the tubes of the digestive system. (It’s a bit like squeezing a tube of toothpaste.)

The stomach and intestines are filled with a mix of solid material, fluid and air.

Air is a gas, and in the abdomen it is under pressure. When peristalsis moves liquid

While a diagnosis of dementia is daunting, I urge you to enjoy the time you have with him now. He’s still the person you cared for enough to marry. He will be that person for quite a while.

If you fulfill your role as a supportive wife now, your chances of finding happiness when your husband’s journey is over will be greater. A final thought: You’re not alone. I mean, really? In my day, a married woman’s first child was welcomed with a baby shower.

Today, baby showers are given for three, four, five children of the same mother whether she’s married or not. Am I out of the loop on this one? After two failed marriages, I married a wonderful man whom I love but am not in love with. He recently had a seizure, after which he was diagnosed with moderate dementia.

Bridge partners have agreements, mostly about bidding, but they are of no use if a partner forgets one. In addition, the basic system introduces its own restrictions. In today’s deal, for example, how should the bidding continue in Standard and in twoover-one game-forcing?

In Standard, South would rebid three hearts to show extra values and six-plus hearts. North would take control with (Roman Key Card) Blackwood and hopefully get to seven hearts.

In two-over-one, South rebids two hearts (because three hearts promises a solid suit). North raises to three hearts, and a two-over-one problem arises. Neither player knows the strength of his partner’s hand, except that it is worth an opening bid. When a major is agreed at the three-level, if South now control-bids four clubs, it shows extra values and the club ace -- a serious slam-try. With a middling hand, he continues with an artificial three no-trump. With a minimum, he signs off in four hearts.

How should South play in seven hearts after West leads the club jack to dummy’s king?

Declarer should play a heart to his ace, discard a spade on the club ace (do not draw another round of trumps), lead a spade to the ace, return to the spade king, ruff the spade jack with dummy’s heart jack, draw trumps, and claim.

Finally, although bidding agreements are great, you and your partner should spend much more time than you do now discussing defense.
