Police responded to a call of an armed robbery Friday at Fifth Third Bank, 2707 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

Witnesses said the suspect fled the scene on foot, before police arrived, wearing a wolf mask.

Suspect wearing wolf mask sought in DeKalb bank robbery

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com and RHONDA GILLESPIE rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Police are searching for a man who robbed a DeKalb bank wearing a wolf mask Friday afternoon.

The suspect entered the Fifth Third Bank at 2707 Sycamore Road in DeKalb armed with a gun about 4 p.m. Friday. On one of the hottest days of the year, the man was wearing a red hat on top of the mask, blue jeans and a blue long-sleeve shirt, DeKalb police Cmdr.

Bob Redel said.

The man demanded cash from a clerk, then climbed over the counter to steal an undisclosed amount of money from the bank, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department. He left the bank on foot, police said, and headed west down Oakland Drive.

At least two witnesses, who did not want to be identified by name for fear of their safety, said the man was inside the bank with them and ran right passed them as the suspect exited the bank.

Witnesses told police the man displayed a black handgun, according to a Northern Illinois University Safety Bulletin.

Police responded to the bank about 4:12 p.m. Friday and secured the area. DeKalb police were joined by DeKalb County Sheriff’s

deputies in the investigation. A police dog searched the area, hit on something, but lost the trail near the hospital, Redel said.

During a search of the area, police were unable to find the mask or any other articles of clothing the suspect wore during the robbery, Redel said.

A sign on the door of the bank said it had been closed because of an emergency.

NIU police responded to the NIU Monsanto location as a precaution, according to the safety bulletin.

The suspect’s height might be his undoing. Redel said the black man was more than 6 feet tall, and possibly taller than 6 feet 2 inches.

Police described him as having a medium build and being armed with a gun.

No one was injured during the robbery.

Redel said he wasn’t aware Friday evening of any other reports of bank robberies by suspects wearing the same or similar wolf masks.

The suspect remained at large as of 9 p.m.

Friday. However, Redel said investigators are following up on several leads.

DeKalb County pool attendance climbs with mercury

browland@shawmedia.comG GENOA – It’s been a great summer for swimming and lounging by the pool.

The sun and hot weather are boosting attendance figures at public pools in DeKalb, Sycamore and Genoa.

For some people, when it is as hot as it has been this week – with heat indexes above 100 degrees – the pool is the only place to be.

“It’s been a very good year for outdoor swimming,” DeKalb Park District’s Scott deOliveira said.

More than 22,600 people had taken a dip at Hopkins Pool as of Tuesday. By comparison, the total attendance for last summer was 30,665, deOliveira said. When the temperature hit 90 degrees June 10, more than 1,200 went to the pool.

About 900 people were there on Memorial Day. “We’re on pace to eclipse last year,” deOliveira said.

Officials at the Sycamore Park District and the Genoa Township Park District also have seen attendance figures well ahead of last summer.

To date, about 6,700 people have checked in at Chamberlain Park Pool. That’s up from about 5,900 people during the same period last summer, said Sandi Rease, aquatics director at Genoa Township Park District.

More people have come to the Sycamore Park District pool this summer as well, said Derek Stenberg, pool manager.

Both the Sycamore and DeKalb park districts have been looking for ways to address their aging aquatic facilities in recent years.

Leaders of both had discussed building a pool jointly owned and operated by the two taxing bodies in an unspecified location, but results of a survey released in December have dampened enthusiasm for a shared pool.

The facilities in DeKalb and Sycamore are clearly showing their age, but that hasn’t stopped many people from heading out to take a dip with excessive heat warnings in place for DeKalb County this week.

At Chamberlain Park Pool, Rease said discounted pricing has helped attract more visitors. For example, there’s Teacher Tuesdays, when teachers get in free; and $3 Thursdays, when everyone gets in for $3.

In fact, there is a discount of some kind almost every day of the week.

At Hopkins Pool, DeKalb Park District officials have ramped up programming, adding events such as Poolaplooza and a cardboard boat regatta, which is scheduled for July 30. Night swimming, through a program dubbed Hot Summer Nights, also has been a draw.

“We’ve had a lot of success with programming at the pool,” deOlivei-

ra said.

Sycamore Park District’s pool doesn’t have the water slides that Hopkins Park and Chamberlain Park Pool do. As a result, the district likely loses some customers to water parks, said Lisa Metcalf, recreation supervisor at Sycamore Park District.

However, the pool does have amenities such as three diving boards (including a high dive), a baby pool and a hot tub. (Stenberg said that some people love the hot tub, even on hot days.)

On Friday, Rebecca Ginley of Sycamore brought her children, Marissa, 18; Sam, 12; and Eden, 4, to the Sycamore Park District.

“It’s hot and we’ve been in the house a lot this week,” she said.

While it may not have some features that other area pools have, she likes

the baby pool, the attentive lifeguards and the relaxed vibe. “I can relax here,” she said.

Kara Wilkins of Sycamore took daughter Ava, 7, to Chamberlain Park Pool this week. Wilkins drives from Sycamore to Genoa about once a week during the summer because she prefers the pool there.

Britany Goodman of Burlington brings children Finn, 8, and Holly, 5, to Chamberlain Park Pool at least three times a week.

For her, the staff at the Genoa pool make it worth the drive from Burlington.

DeOliveira said it can get too hot for some people to go to the pool.

He’s not sure what the magic number is, but at some point, attendance starts to fall.

“It can get so hot that our business slows down,” he said.

Local delegate’s view of convention’s final days DELEGATE’S VIEW Denny Sands On Tuesday, we made history: We nominated Donald J. Trump for president of the United States.

Each state delegation was called on to give its vote totals. If your state delegates were “bound” to vote for a candidate, they had to be counted as such.

We, in Illinois, were bound. Our chairman correctly announced Illinois’ totals. Some states tried to circumvent the rules. They announced different totals. The convention chair did not allow that. The totals recorded were the bound totals.

Many states that had “nonbound” delegates went unanimously to Trump.

It was great to see the unity. After New York state was given the honor of putting the vote total for Trump over the top, the stadium erupted into cheers!

Donald had done what was thought to be impossible. He is the Republican nominee for president of the United States.

Tuesday – ‘Make America work again’

To make it happen, we need someone who has actually created jobs. Donald Trump Jr. spoke eloquently about the accomplishments of his dad. He has watched his dad in the business boardrooms and construction sites since his early childhood.

When someone said to his dad “it is impossible,” Donald took the challenge and made it possible. When they told Trump that it was impossible to win the Republican nomination, Donald willed it to happen! To see a son so proud of his dad and to hear a son talk in such glowing tributes about his dad, it literally inspired every mom, dad, daughter and son in attendance on the floor.

We also heard from the Washington Republican leadership of Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The convention floor was overwhelmingly pro-Trump, and Ryan and McConnell received a lukewarm welcome. It was encouraging to hear them talk about the need for unity, but most delegates wanted more out of the leadership team.

It won’t be long before the Trump Train stops at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., and President Trump will expect them to get to work and stop the “do-nothing way of doing business.”

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey was a great speaker. As a former pros-

Christie laid out a number of charges against Hillary. He asked the convention crowd to rule “Guilty or Not Guilty” to each charge. Of course, after each indictment the crowd in unison answered “Guilty.”

After about the second guilty finding, someone in the Illinois delegation started yelling, “Lock her up, lock her up,” after the guilty finding. Soon the whole floor was chanting after every guilty finding, “lock her up, lock her up.”

I guess we, in Illinois, have learned where to put our crooked politicians over the years, in jail. Christie smiled profusely after each chant! It was not planned, it was totally spontaneous and Christie loved it! (You know Hillary grew up in Illinois.)

Wednesday – ‘Make America first again’

The night started off with a rousing speech by Laura Ingraham, conservative political commentator. She asked all of the other 17 Republican primary candidates to honor their pledge and support Donald Trump.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was very well-received. His support of Trump was very, very solid. His theme was “America deserves better.” He described Hillary as the most liberal insider in Washington. In a time when the majority of the nation is supporting

outsiders (Trump and Bernie Sanders), here we have the ultimate insider in Hillary Clinton.

Ted Cruz received a standing ovation as he came on stage. We were glad the Trump campaign had reached out to Ted, as a sign of unity. We were glad Ted accepted the invitation to speak, moving the process forward.

About halfway through his speech, we began to sense that he was not going to mention Trump by name. Uneasiness grabbed the delegates. Repeated calls for Cruz to say Trump’s name soon became boos, which grew louder and louder!

Ted just smirked and kept on talking.

Even Cruz delegates were booing him.

Boos turned to yells of “Get off the stage!”

Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the House, tried to smooth over what had just happened, but the delegates were not in a forgiving mood.

Newt, a Republican favorite, geared up the crowd with his attacks on the Democrats. He talked about the current administration sleepwalking in their response to terrorism. Trump is right, we must change course to win the war on terrorism. To the delight of the crowd, Gingrich said, “No bureaucrat will get in the way of a veteran and his doctor,” during a Trump administration.

Next up was vice presidential nominee Mike Pence. Very soon into his acceptance speech, the delegates were

chanting, “We like Mike.”

Most of us knew very little about Pence, but he became an instant favorite. He called for no-nonsense leadership and said the Democrats and the media need to wake up and realize that despite their best efforts, Trump is still standing tall.

Pence explained how Donald turned a longshot campaign into a movement.

Mentioning that our country is restless for change, Mike called Clinton the “secretary of the status quo,” nothing will get done or change, resulting in four more years of Obama. Pence will make a great vice president.

Thursday – ‘Make America One Again’

It was a thrill.

We were actually there as Donald J. Trump accepted the Republican nomination for president. Notable speakers before his acceptance were former NFL quarterback Fran Tarkenton, Jerry Falwell Jr., president of Liberty University, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, Peter Thiel, business leader, and of course, Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, who spoke passionately about her dad.

The building was packed past capacity. People stood shoulder to shoulder on the convention floor.

As Ivanka introduced her dad, the crowd exploded with passion. You could

Born: Jan. 11, 1952; in Jellico, TN Died: July 16, 2016; in Morrison, IL Donnie Lowe, age 64, of Mount Carroll, IL, died Saturday, July 16, 2016, at the Morrison Community Hospital in Morrison, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded.

A memorial fund has been established in Donnie’s memory, memorials may be sent to the Donnie Lowe Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 309, Savanna, IL 61074.

Donnie was born Jan. 11, 1952, in Jellico, TN, son of Jake and Faye (Kennedy) Lowe. Donnie married Joanne Farthing On Oct. 28, 1972, in DeKalb, IL. Donnie enjoyed fishing, pig roasts, watching NASCAR and the Chicago Cubs.

Donnie will be dearly missed by his wife of 43 years, Joanne of Mount Carroll; three children, Bradly (Colleen) Lowe of Sycamore, IL, Donavon Lowe of Brooklyn, NY, Michael (Jeana) Lowe of Mount Carroll; four grandchildren, Anna, Lydia, Trent, Jake; three great-grandchildren; mother, Faye Taylor of Winter Haven, FL; four brothers, Wayne (Sheila) Lowe of Winter Haven, Wade (JoAnn) Lowe of Sycamore, Danny (Roxanne) Lowe of Florida, Deon Lowe of Tennessee; two sisters Patsy Tirado, Wanda (Ed) Harvel of DeKalb and a daughter in-law, Emily Lowe, of DeKalb, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Donnie was preceded in death by his father, Jake; and his nephew, Jeffery Beaumont.

Memorial service will be from 2 to 4 p.m.

Born March 8, 1938, in Waterman, IL, he was the son of Wayne and Dorothy (Turner) Moudy. Robert married Jane Murphy on June 8, 1963.

Robert was employed

by Duplex Products as an electrician and later as plant supervisor. He was a driver for Carquest until his retirement. Robert was a member of the Sycamore United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Sycamore Elks Club and the DeKalb Moose Club.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; children, Brian (Tammy) Moudy, Maple Park, Bruce (Kristin) Moudy, Eureka, Brenda (Jeff) Kelly, Brighton and Kimberly (David) Smith, Lakeland, FL; eight grandchildren, Jenna, Raymond, Jacob, Courtney, Joshua, Emma, Noah, and Kendra; three great-grandchildren, Logan, Nicholas, and Claire; brothers, Richard Moudy, his twin, of Sycamore and Donald (Bonnie) Moudy, Sandwich; sisters, Dolores (Duane) Charlesworth, Phoenix, and Loretta (James) Hipple of Sycamore; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Dalton.

The funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with the Rev. Harlene Harden of Sycamore United Methodist Church officiating.

Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at Fairview Park Cemetery, in DeKalb.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the time of services Tuesday at Anderson Funeral

EMMA SCOTT Emma Scott, age 69, daughter of Eulogio and Natividad Inocencio, wife of William Bernard Scott, mother of Thomas Scott and Matthew (Kim) Scott and grandmother of Josiah Scott, Cadence Scott and Gideon Scott, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2016, after a 24 year battle with breast cancer.

Emma was a member of First Baptist Church of Rochelle. Emma loved sports. She was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. She enjoyed playing softball, volleyball and running.

Emma participated in many 5K, 10K and 12mile runs and a few half marathons. She was thrilled to be nominated and selected to be a torchbearer for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Emma was employed by Wal-Mart in Rochelle and DeKalb stores for 29 years. She retired in February 2016 after becoming physically unable to continue her job.

Emma is survived by her husband; sons and daughter-in-law; grandchildren; seven brothers, Aldofo (Mary) Inocencio of Coal City, IL, Gilbert (Mary) Inocencio of Lytle, TX, Rolando (Martha) Inocencio of San Antonio, TX, Robert (Norma) Inocencio of Lytle, TX, Cruz Inocencio of Aurora, IL, Julio Inocencio of Lytle, TX and Eulogio Jr. of Lytle, TX; and five sisters, Hortencia Inocencio of Rochelle, IL, Amy Gomez of Lytle, TX, Olga Ramirez of Lytle, TX, Jovita Inocencio of Tennessee and Elisa Maria (Oscar) Jimenez of Lytle, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Elvira Inocencio and Gracie Torevino.

RODNEY A. TRUEBLOOD Rodney A. Trueblood, 67, passed away suddenly of a massive heart attack July 17, 2016. Rod was born in Rochelle, IL. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1970 and was stationed in Anchorage, AK. Rod loved living in Anchorage so much, that after his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he remained there. In 1987, he moved to Washington. Rod’s interest in airplanes drew him to be a volunteer at The Museum of Flight in Seattle.

Rod is survived by his wife, Sharon; his mother, Eva Trueblood, Genoa, IL; two sisters, Sheila Watson, Joplin, MT, and Natalie Canavan (Tom), Genoa, IL; three stepdaughters, nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Rod also had many nieces and nephews.

Rod was a wonderful man with a gentle soul who will be missed by many.

A military interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Tahoma National Cemetery 18600 SE 240th St., Kent, WA 98042.

stopped them for traffic violations as they left, Sycamore police detective Ryan Goodman said during a hearing June 21.

Campbell has argued that when officers pulled Kowalefski over for failing to use a turn signal, they violated his rights by further detaining him.

“Following the seizure of [Kowalefski] for the traffic violation, [Kowalefski] was detained for an unreasonable amount of time considering the nature of the traffic infraction,” Campbell wrote in a formal request to have the evidence suppressed.

It was Kowalefski’s “elusive” answers to basic questions, and the fact that he was driving a government vehicle, that made police suspicious, and begin probing further, Theriault said.

“At that point ... he’s admitted to me and said to me, ‘Yeah, I was in there.’

Come on, don’t make me say this.’ That reluctance to say something, that type of an answer to me says there’s something that’s being hidden,” Theriault said in court. “There’s more to the story.”

SYCAMORE – The city’s police chief testified Friday that upon being pulled over, a federal postal inspector suspected of hiring a prostitute at a Sycamore spa showed officers his government credentials and asked for a “professional courtesy.”

Dean Kowalefski, 51, of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, was charged in June 2015 with soliciting a prostitute after police said employees at Spa One in Sycamore identified him in a photograph and said he gave a spa employee money in exchange for a sex act.

The man’s attorney has argued police performed an unlawful search and seizure and arrested Kowalefski without a valid warrant while he was not committing a crime.

“We’re arguing that this was an unlawful stop,” his attorney, Clay Campbell, said. “That they kept him on the side of the road too long and we’re asking the judge to make a finding that they violated his rights by detaining

him that long. We’re asking that the evidence against Mr. Kowalefski be suppressed.”

Sycamore police officer Stacy Binkowski and Police Chief Glenn Theriault testified Friday about Kowalefski’s arrest. Upon being pulled over, Kowalefski handed police his federal ID, and asked the Sycamore officers to do him a “professional courtesy,” Theriault said.

Throughout the duration of the hourlong stop, Kowalefski never admitted to participating in any illegal activity, Theriault said. He did, however, tell police he found the massage parlor on a website that Theriault said is known for advertising prostitution.

Police were watching Spa One for sometime, after receiving complaints from nearby residents about heavy traffic near it, Theriault said.

On June 11, 2015, police were parked outside the business, 610 Plaza Drive, Unit 5, Sycamore, where an investigation into possible prostitution was underway. Police took note of customers as they entered the business and

State: Work can resume on Stevens Building project

DeKALB – The state has officially sent notice to Northern Illinois University, the construction company and other principals that work may resume on the Stevens Building project.

“The contractors and AE (architectural engineer) were notified via letter that was delivered by email,” said Allie Bovis, spokeswoman for the Capital Development Board.

The state agency is the one funding and overseeing the project. Bovis said the notification was sent Thursday.

Work had stopped on the $27.4 million project last summer, after the state failed to have a fiscal 2016 budget in place. But, on June 30, legislators approved a stopgap budget that included a $15.5 million appropriation for the project.

The CDB gave the university permission last fall to winterize the construction work that had already been done. NIU spent $300,000 to do that.

Bovis explained that the letter sent Thursday only gets the ball rolling – albeit slowly – but doesn’t set any par-

ticular timeline for any parts of the process, which she described as long.

In the coming weeks, a project manager with the CDB, NIU, East Peoria-based River City Construction – which is doing the work – and others involved, all are expected to meet and establish the path forward. Before work stopped, the university had planned to move into the new building this fall. It is expected to house the Department of Anthropology and School of Theater and Dance.

“There’s still a lot of moving parts,” Bovis said. “But it depends on what happens at the meeting and when they can get a meeting scheduled.”

NIU spokeswoman Lisa Miner said that, so far, NIU is not aware of any meeting being scheduled.

River City Construction has done work on several state university and community college campuses. Its projects includes construction of a new residence hall on the Southern Illinois University campus, additions at Parkland College in Champaign, an Army National Guard facility on the Heartland Community College Campus and more.

We had heard that the media had been playing up the disunity all day.

But when Mr. Trump came onto the stage, the building erupted as one. It was the moment we all had waited for.

DeKALB – Brigham Field was alive with football Friday, but not everyone on the turf was a Division I athlete.

Northern Illinois University athletics held its annual Family Fun Day and Movie Night at Huskie Stadium, an event in which families interacted with the 2016 Huskies football team.

Kids of all ages and student-athletes ran the same drills that prepare the Huskies for each season while parents toured the stadium facilities.

Families were treated to a screening of “Zootopia” in the evening.

Morris White, assistant athletic director for marketing and game experience at NIU, said the annual event provides a window into the inner workings of the football program.

“Anytime we can get kids and get our fans on the field and in the stadium, it’s a good time,” White said. “We have an event that allows people to get a little one-on-one time with athletes, see the behind the scenes and tours of some of our premium areas and our facilities. All in all, it’s a communitywide event that we’re very proud of.”

That community is what White said keeps the program running.

District 428 finance chief to address Kiwanis Club DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – DeKalb School District 428 Superintendent of Business and Finance Andrea Gorla will give an informal presentation about the district’s budget and its plans to restructure its debt at a DeKalb Kiwanis Club meeting Monday that will be open to the public.

Gorla will address how the state budget will affect the district and the district’s plans to restructure its loans.

The debt restructuring could have significant property tax implications for district residents.

Residents could see a property tax spike if District 428 doesn’t restructure its bonds, but refinancing could cost the school millions more in the long term. The school district issued four referendum-approved bonds in

pieces between 2008 and 2011 that totaled $110 million to finance DeKalb High School, repurposing the old high school building and renovating elementary schools. The district now is looking at options to restructure its debt service.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Monday at the Elks Club, 209 S. Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb, according to a news release from the organization. The meeting will be convened by President Jeff Hess and a question-and-answer session will be part of the presentation, the release said.

The meeting is open to the public and the Elks Club is a fully accessible facility, according to the release.

CHICAGO – A Chicago police officer was released from the hospital after being shot in the leg by a man who was killed when officers returned fire, police said.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson told reporters the officer and his partner were on bike patrol on the near South Side around 8:15 p.m.

Thursday when a person told them about a man acting erratically.

The Cook County medical examiner identified the man as Derek Love, 50.

The officers approached Love, who was talking on a cellphone, and asked him to hang up so they could speak with him.

Love pulled a gun out of a backpack and began firing, striking one officer in the thigh, Johnson said.

Both officers returned fire, killing the suspect, he said.

“This is just another example of too many guns, too many people willing to use them,” Johnson said. “But it also illustrates how Chicago police officers put their lives on the line every day to keep the city of Chicago

safe.”

The wounded officer had a tourniquet and he and his partner used it to treat the wound, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

He was taken to a hospital with injuries that Johnson said were not considered life-threatening. Mayor Rahm Emanuel visited him there, Johnson said.

The wounded officer is 44 years old and a 16-year veteran of the department, according to a police statement.

The officer’s name was not released.

The shooting happened in an affluent area blocks from Soldier Field.

The incident is under investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative leave.

Chicago police have been working in pairs for safety since the fatal shooting earlier this month of five Dallas officers during a protest over the fatal police shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota.

Police said Sunday that policy would continue after three law enforcement officers were gunned down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Gov. apologizes for calling teachers illiterate

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner apologized Friday for a 2011 email in which he characterized Chicago public school teachers as “virtually illiterate” and principals as “incompetent,” but said he was frustrated by the pace of change in the nation’s third-largest school system.

Before the Republican governor could even make the apology, several protesters interrupted his opening remarks at a signing ceremony for two education-related bills. Rauner stood silently behind a podium and tried awkwardly to suppress a smile as protesters stood up one after the other to read statements, including one who called his comments inflammatory and challenged the governor to a reading contest.

CHICAGO – A judge has ordered Illinois health officials to reconsider their decision not to include migraine headaches on the list of conditions that qualify for use of medical marijuana in the state.

A Cook County judge overturned Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Nirav Shah’s denial of a petition to add migraines to the list, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The judge ordered Shah to reconsider evidence presented to the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board before its members voted to recommend approving marijuana to treat migraines.

The court ruling was in response to a suit filed by an unidentified man who has already been using marijuana to treat his headaches. Attorney Robert Bauerschmidt said the middle-aged man has suffered severe migraines since adolescence.

Agency shows willingness to side against officers

CHICAGO –The embattled Chicago agency that oversees police misconduct allegations ruled this week that two more officer shootings were not justified, findings that may signal a greater willingness to hold officers accountable than in previous years.

From its 2007 creation to early last month, the Independent Police Review Authority deemed two out of about 400 police shootings unjustified. But it has said in the past two months that three shootings – including the two this week – were unjustified, IPRA data shows.

MOLINE – Deere & Company said it is laying off 120 employees at an East Moline factory as part of ongoing job cuts.

The company said in a news release Friday that the production employees are being indefinitely laid off as the company tries to adjust to anticipate decreases in the sales of agricultural equipment this year.

Deere spokesman Ken Golden said the East Moline plant makes combines and other harvesting equipment.

Clinton picks Virginia’s Kaine as running mate The ASSOCIATED PRESS ORLANDO, Florida – Hillary Clinton named Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine as her vice presidential running mate Friday, adding a centrist former governor of a crucial battleground state to the Democratic ticket.

In a text message to supporters, the presumptive Democratic nominee said, “I’m thrilled to tell you this first: I’ve chosen Sen. Tim Kaine as my running mate.”

On Twitter a few seconds later, Clinton described Kaine as “a man who’s devoted his life to fighting for others.” She called him “a relentless optimist who believes no problem is unsolvable if you put in the work to solve it.”

With the pick, Clinton moved into the political spotlight a day after newly crowned Republican nominee Donald Trump closed out his convention with a fiery address accusing his general election opponent of “terrible, terrible crimes.”

Kaine, 58, had long been a favorite for Clinton’s ticket.

Fluent in Spanish and active in the Senate on foreign relations and military affairs, he built a reputation for working across the aisle as Virginia’s governor and as mayor of Richmond.

Police: Suspect dead in Going on Munich mall shooting The ASSOCIATED PRESS MUNICH – A gunman opened fire in a crowded Munich shopping mall and a nearby McDonald’s on Friday night, killing nine people and wounding at least 10 others before killing himself, said authorities who called the rampage an act of terrorism.

Police gave a “cautious all clear” early Saturday morning, more than seven hours after the attack began. They said a body found near the scene was that of the shooter and he appeared to have acted alone.

Witnesses had reported seeing three men with firearms near the Olympia Einkaufszentrum mall, but police said on Twitter that “as part of our manhunt we found a person who had killed himself – the person is likely to have been the attacker who, according to the current state of the investigation, acted alone.”

They lifted a shutdown of all public transport in the Bavarian capital, and said more details would be disclosed at a news conference later in the morning.

After gunfire broke out at the mall,

one of Munich’s largest, the city sent a smartphone alert declaring an “emergency situation” and telling people to stay indoors, while all rail, subway and trolley service was halted in the city.

It was the third major act of violence against civilians in Western Europe in eight days. The previous attacks, in the French resort city of Nice and on a train in Bavaria, were claimed by the Islamic State group.

While police called the mall shooting an act of terrorism, they said they had “no indication” it involved Islamic extremism and at least one witness said he heard a shooter shout an anti-foreigner slur.

The attack started shortly before 6 p.m. at a McDonald’s across the street from the mall, which was filled with people doing their weekend shopping.

As dozens of shots rang out, terrified shoppers ran from the scene, some carrying babies and pushing strollers.

Video obtained by The Associated Press from German news agency NonstopNews showed two bodies with sheets draped over them not far from the fastfood restaurant.

Constitution should serve Illinoisans

Illinois’ system of government is rigged against the very people who work day in and day out to pay for it.

We’ve known that for years, but it was proven once again last week when a second attempt to change how state political districts are drawn was thrown out by a Cook County judge who called it unconstitutional.

More than 550,000 Illinois residents signed a ballot proposal that sought to ask voters whether they wanted to take the power to draw Illinois legislative districts away from political party leaders and instead give it to a nonpartisan, independent 11-member commission.

The same effort in 2014 also was thrown out by a judge. Backers of the “fair maps” proposal said they learned from the 2014 attempt and worked to fix the flaws this year. But because the system is rigged, their last hope is an appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court, which agreed Friday to grant an emergency hearing.

The will of the people to have a say in how their government operates should not be so complicated, nor should it be unconstitutional. If it truly is unconstitutional, then our constitution, ratified in 1972, must be revised.

Voters in other states have the power to make changes to their government and its laws that directly impact their lives. Sometimes, the measures that voters support at the ballot box go against the will of the state’s politicians. So be it. Illinois, however, allows only a very narrow amount of direct democracy. Only constitutional amendments may be voted on, and only pertaining to “structural and procedural measures.” The only binding measures Illinoisans are allowed to weigh in on are those placed before them by their politicians.

The state’s political establishment, especially Speaker Michael Madigan and ruling Democrats, are desperate to keep the general public from having a say. They know people are angry and they have good reasons to be angry.

There is a gap of about $8 billion between what the state takes in and what it spends. The state’s pension systems are underfunded by more than $110 billion. Ever-growing payments to support them are crippling the government. Illinois’ property tax burden is among the highest in the country. The state has a backlog of unpaid bills that tops $7 billion.

Despite all of this, more than 59 percent of races for the Illinois House – 70 of 118 – are uncontested. In the state Senate, 70 percent of the 40 races are uncontested.

This is where the system that allows politicians to pick their voters – instead of the other way around – has gotten us.

We need a constitution that makes government serve the people, and not the oligopoly of political power brokers who seem content to wait for walls to come down around them before they appeal for a federal bailout.

the law by not having the weapon concealed, which is cause for revocation of license and would have caused the officer to at least draw his weapon.

At that point the officer could care less if the victim had a license or not. His safety and the safety of the two females and driver would have been his main concern, as well as securing the weapon.

At that point, it’s doubtful that the officer would have asked to see his license without first securing the weapon. Both officers say the victim was reaching for the weapon and had not been asked for any identification.

The other adult in the car said he was reaching for his license. She had a video but it only showed the aftermath of the incident. Much like Ferguson, several witnesses told stories contradicting police accounts. The witness accounts were later proven to have been intentionally false and the people who gave them should have been prosecuted.

Your article was correct in that the law does not require the license holder to make known that he has a weapon and a permit. A survey of police officers on this subject would be interesting.

There was talk that Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White wanted to have some way of marking future drivers licenses of concealed carry permit holders. Many permit holders I’m sure would consider that an invasion of privacy.

A matter of concern/interest only to law enforcement and not your insurance company, a hotel check-in clerk or anyone else.

Praise the Lord, I’ve seen the dark A week ago I felt good about America, but no more.

Coyotes are running freely in the streets of our big cities, the stock market is teetering on the verge of collapse, the monetary system will soon go belly-up, China and North Korea and Iran have a knife to our throats, our schools are in chaos, politicians corrupt, the media stupefied by political correctness, and everywhere you look you hear foreign accents. We are on the edge of the abyss.

We have purchased flame-throwers that are much more effective than firearms and we have enough napalm to fight off platoons of invaders, plus the attic holds four tons of dynamite that is wired to a single switch in the refrigerator: When we go, we’ll take the whole neighborhood with us.

In fact, at two Chick-fil-A outlets close to my office, customers lined up to get sandwiches. At one restaurant, the line was so long that it extended outside the store and onto the sidewalk.

I asked waiting customers why they went to Chick-fil-A, since our mayor said the company is anti-gay.

“I didn’t think that had anything to do with the sandwich,” said one. Another made me smile by saying, “Too bad. I don’t care about what the mayor says.”

When we have a choice, Americans ignore politicians. That’s usually a good thing.

Former star goalkeeper Carr battles back from malignant brain tumor

jseverson@shawmedia.com Amy Carr was bed-ridden in the hospital in London for more than a week.

She had lost her ability to speak and was temporarily paralyzed on the right side of her body after a pair of surgeons extracted a cancerous golf-ball sized tumor out of her head. A former star goalkeeper for the Northern Illinois women’s soccer team, the aftermath of the July 2015 surgery – along with the extensive chemotherapy that followed – robbed her of her strength.

Just more than a year later, she’s training for her first half-marathon.

“I’m feeling good now – best I’ve ever felt,” she said now at her home in Hemel Hempstead, England. “I reflect every now and again. I changed my career plans. I used to want to play and coach out in America, but there’s a new thing here where patients who had cancer can get qualified to personal train clients who are going through cancer treatment. I just got a job in a gym and am working on my personal training certificate and so hopefully I can train people with cancer to give them a sense of achievement and control over that aspect of their life.”

Carr is relatively stoic talking about the whole experience – which consisted of three seizures that occurred in a two-year window. The surgeons had told her there was a small chance – maybe five percent – that the surgery to remove the tumor from the left side of her brain could leave her permanently paralyzed on the right side. More than likely, it would take six months to get back into the swing of things.

However, she wasn’t sure how to prepare for a 10-hour surgery, one that she would need to be awake for – although she was so heavily medicated that she only remembers about 10 seconds of it and that a Chris Brown song was playing in the background. So she prepared for it like she would for the biggest match of her life.

She trained.

“I didn’t know how to prepare for it, so all I could do was prepare like it was a game,” she said. “I trained harder for the surgery than I would for a game.

I just did what I could. I got so fit, it was unbelievable. I was running twice a day and lifting three times a week.

I did everything I could to get ready

When she finally left the hospital after nearly two weeks, she was back on a stationary bicycle.

Before her senior season in 2013 – a year after being the first Huskie

goalkeeper to earn all-Mid-American Conference honors in program history – she was getting ready for bed back in England when she saw a dreaded spider in the bathroom. She called for her mother, Daryl, to come take care of the

eight-legged enemy before she started to feel funny.

“I did a couple of laps around my bedroom and the next thing I remember is waking up to the paramedics over me,” she said.

She had suffered the first of three seizures, but all that tests revealed was that low blood pressure was likely the culprit.

Two more seizures followed while coming out of a 10-minute sauna session each time – one at a gym in Algonquin in November 2014 and another at her gym in England in February 2015.

Even after the episode in Algonquin, she said her fears were more monetary than about her physical well-being.

“I didn’t really connect the dots, I was just worried about the medical bills, to be honest,” Carr said of her seizure in America. “It was just frustration because I knew I didn’t have the money to pay for it and it would be a lot of money. I just was worried about my parents’ reaction.”

The third episode was the one that made her family realize she needed an MRI. It showed a benign tumor in the left side of her brain, but her surgery got postponed five times from March until July as it had turned into a glioblastoma, a malignant tumor that affects the central nervous system.

When the successful surgery was finally over on July 12, she had lost the ability to speak for more than a week.

The recovery left her confused – giving a thumbs up to offers for tea and coffee even though she hates both and blurting out at random. At one point, when asked how she was doing, she responded that she was okay, but said so in French.

“I spoke French – how embarrassing,” she laughs.

However, none of this was the hardest part of the journey for her. Instead, it was losing her hair in the chemotherapy sessions that followed, which would eradicate all the leftover cancer cells in her body.

“My hair is part of who I am and I felt like that was going and I couldn’t do anything about it,” she said. “I was literally pulling clumps of my hair out, if not brushing it out. It was like three times a day. I didn’t want to shower because I didn’t want to lose my hair.

I couldn’t deal with that. My hair has always been my pride and joy.”

Carson Fulmer came on with a 5-4 lead in the seventh and quickly ran into trouble. He threw 30 pitches – 12 for strikes – in his third major league appearance.

The Tigers loaded the bases with none out before Jose Iglesias drove in Justin Upton with a fielder’s choice grounder. Once a star goalkeeper not only with the Huskies but with England’s U17 National Team and professionally in Norway, her sights are set on the Great North Run, a half-marathon on Sept. 11 in Newcastle, England. It will be the longest race of her life, but it’s not the physically demanding part of the run that she thinks will be the toughest.

“I just get really bored,” she said.

“I hope it’s good scenery because I’ve never been to Newcastle so I think that will help me. I could never do a full marathon. I have the fitness for it, I just get too bored. I don’t know how people do it.”

Cubs give Almora Jr. all-expense-paid trip after marriage

MILWAUKEE – Talk about making adjustments at the big-league level.

Cubs center fielder Albert Almora Jr. got married Thursday. On Friday, before he could make plans for the honeymoon, the club gave him an allexpense-paid trip to the Pacific Coast League.

“I guess we’re in [the honeymoon] right now,” joked Almora, the impressive rookie who became the corresponding roster move when center fielder Dexter Fowler returned from a hamstring injury Friday.

Almora, who called Friday’s news “bittersweet,” hit well enough, looked poised enough and was spectacular enough in the field during his sixweek debut in the big leagues that the baseball honeymoon has only begun for the former No. 6 overall pick.

He’s expected to return no later than September, and by next season’s opener could be the next homegrown player to take his place in the Cubs’ starting lineup, pending the Cubs’ decision on Fowler’s contract option.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon wasn’t willing to look at potential personnel decisions that far down the road.

“All I know is that he’s proven to himself and us how good he is and that, yes, he can play on a consistent basis – there’s no question about that,” Maddon said. “I think that we, and the front office, are comfortable with the fact we believe he can [play regularly] and more importantly that he believes that he can.”

Almora, who was hitting .281 with nine extra-base hits until a 2-for-12 homestand, was an impact fielder in center, with lingering discomfort in his hip from a July 15 crash into the Wrigley Field wall as a reminder.

“I’m confident in my ability,” he said. “I’m confident I can play here, 100 percent.

“I played like I belong, and that’s what I feel like,” he added. “When I first got here what helped me sleep at night was that I played my all. I left it all on the field. I can’t predict what could happen but I’m happy with what’s going on.”

It may not be the way he and his wife, Krystal, planned to spend the first week of their marriage, leaving

Chicago for Iowa. But he said now the plan is to just get back as soon as possible.

“It was a really exciting time,” Almora said of his off-day, courthouse marriage. “Now this happens [Friday]. But she’s a warrior, and we’ll get through this together now.”

Said Maddon of Almora’s 34-game debut: “He knows he can do this. He knows what to work on. He knows what it feels like. Moving forward, it was a great moment for him and for us.

“He’s going to be back.”

fumbles and zero fumble recoveries last season. Now he needs to take his game to the next level to be a difference-maker.

Battle to start: Most of the Bears’ starting jobs are set, so this will be one of the top storylines at camp. Harold Jones-Quartey appears to have the first crack at the job. The former Division-II player shined down the stretch last season with an interception, forced fumble and two passes defensed. He was claimed in September, so he didn’t have the spring to work with the defense, but he has the physicality and aggressiveness the Bears need.

Rookie Deon Bush (more on him in a bit) certainly has the athleticism to be a factor. Veteran Chris Prosinski stepped in last season for five starts and is the most experienced of the safety bunch.

Other players we’ll see at safety this summer include rookie DeAndre Houston-Carson and converted corner Demontre Hurst.

Rookie impact: As a fourth-round pick out of Miami, Bush is a hard hitter who wasn’t afraid to stick his nose into the play for the Hurricanes. He may have the highest ceiling of all the players competing to start next to Amos, and he’ll be watched closely in camp to see how quickly he can transition to Fangio’s defense.

Houston-Carson comes to the Bears with an outstanding special-teams pedigree in terms of blocking kicks, and that’s where he’ll make his mark early on, but a converted corner, Houston-Carson could certainly make an impression on defense in Bourbonnais.

Their only surefire answer at the position is Adrian Amos, who was a fifth-round pick last year and had only two passes defensed. Age not a barrier to LASIK Dear Dr. K: I would like to have LASIK surgery to treat my nearsightedness. I’m 54 – is that too old to have this surgery?

Dear Reader: LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) can correct common eye problems: nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. It can eliminate your need for glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK corrects vision by reshaping the cornea, the clear dome at the front of the eye. The procedure is painless, and complications are few when the doctor is experienced.

Your age is not a problem for LASIK. Even in your 50s or beyond, if your eyes are otherwise healthy, LASIK surgery can produce excellent results. Surgical outcomes are similar regardless of age.

The main thing to consider is not your age but whether you have any other eye conditions that could make LASIK less successful. These eye conditions become more common with aging, so the eye doctor should carefully evaluate whether you have them: • Cataracts. With age, the lens of the eye can become clouded. If this happens, the clouded lens can be removed and an artificial one implanted. If you’ve already had LASIK surgery, it’s trickier to choose the correct lenses for cataract surgery. If there’s any sign of clouding, your ophthalmologist may recommend cataract surgery first, and to reconsider LASIK surgery only after the cataract surgery has healed.

• Glaucoma is caused by increased fluid pressure within the eye. The pressure affects the optic nerve, which starts in the back of your eye, leads to the brain and allows you to see. If glaucoma is untreated, it can lead to blindness. Ophthalmologists screen for glaucoma by checking intraocular pressure (fluid pressure inside the eye)

LASIK surgery leads to lower intraocular pressure readings. This may interfere with early diagnosis. So be sure to tell your ophthalmologist if you’ve had LASIK when you are being screened for glaucoma. If your glaucoma is mild and easily managed, you may be a candidate for LASIK. But you should not have LASIK if you have moderate or severe glaucoma.

• Dry eye syndrome. With age, your eyes produce fewer tears. LASIK often worsens dry eye. Any ophthalmologist you see about LASIK should ask you if your eyes have a tendency to be dry, but just in case he or she doesn’t ask, be sure to mention it.

• Presbyopia. In our 40s and 50s, we become less able to focus clearly on near objects. That’s because the lenses inside our eyes get stiff, and a stiff lens can’t bend light in the way that’s necessary to see near objects. The usual remedy is to wear reading glasses. LASIK doesn’t prevent presbyopia, or eliminate the need for reading glasses.

The price for LASIK varies by doctor and by community. The average price may be around $2,000 to $2,500. Health insurance generally does not cover the cost.

LASIK isn’t for everyone. But it could be a great choice for you, regardless of your age, depending on any other eye conditions you might have.

As we toddle through a bridge deal, we sometimes have to guess what to do. In today’s deal, how should the play proceed in four spades after West guesses very well to lead the diamond king?

South rebid only two spades because he knew he would get another turn (partner’s two-over-one response guaranteed a second bid) and he had a minimum in high-card terms. Then, when North showed game-invitational values with at least six hearts, South took a shot at four spades.

Leading king from king-doubleton was dangerous, but it worked beautifully here. East encouraged, won the next diamond trick, and played a third diamond. South, perforce, ruffed high with the spade king. Then declarer had to eliminate his club loser and avoid walking into a trump promotion. He cashed his heart ace, played a club to dummy’s ace, and discarded a club on the heart king. Then he led a low trump, which East did very well to duck smoothly. After South took that trick with his spade queen, what did he do next?

Declarer had to guess. With this layout, he had to continue with a low spade, bringing down East’s ace.

Then South could have ruffed high the next diamond, drawn the missing trump, and claimed. But if a defender had the singleton nine left, a highspade lead was required. At the time, South got it right -- well played everyone.
