Trump: America in crisis – and he’ll fix it ‘fast’

CLEVELAND – Declaring America in crisis, Donald Trump pledged to cheering Republicans and still-skeptical voters Thursday night that as president he will restore the safety they fear they’re losing, strictly curb immigration and save the nation from Hillary Clinton’s record of “death, destruction, terrorism and weakness.”

Confidently addressing the finale of his party’s less-than-smooth national convention, the billionaire businessman declared the nation’s problems too staggering to be fixed within the confines of traditional politics.

“I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people that cannot defend themselves,” Trump said.

The 70-year-old celebrity businessman’s acceptance of the Republican nomination caps his improbable takeover of the GOP, a party that plunges into the general election united in opposition to Clinton but still divided over Trump.

Underscoring his unorthodox candidacy, Trump doubled down on the hard-line immigration policies that fired up conservatives in the primary but broke with many in his party by promising

protections for gays and lesbians.

His address on the closing night of the convention marked his highest-profile opportunity yet to heal Republican divisions and show voters he’s prepared for the presidency. Ever the showman, he fed off the energy of the crowd, stepping back to soak in applause and joining the delegates as they chanted, “U-S-A.” As the crowd, fiercely opposed to Clinton, broke out in its oft-used refrain of “Lock her up,” he waved them off, and instead declared, “Let’s defeat her in November.” Yet he also accused her of “terrible, terrible crimes” and said her greatest achievement may have been avoiding prison for her use of a private email and personal server as secretary of state.

The more than hourlong speech was strikingly dark for a celebratory event and almost entirely lacking in specific policy details. Trump shouted throughout as he read off a teleprompter, showing few flashes of humor or even a smile.

He accused Clinton, his far-more-experienced Democratic rival, of utterly lacking the good judgment to serve in the White House and as the military’s commander in chief.

“This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction, terrorism and weakness,” he said.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren warms to Trump

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, said he’s warming to the idea of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States during a visit to a Vulcan Materials Co. facility near Sycamore.

Hultgren, 50, told employees at the facility at 15622 Barber Greene Road that he met with Trump recently, and although he didn’t give the Republican nominee a solid endorsement, he said there was “no one in public service” that he respects more than Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Trump’s running mate.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen in November,” Hultgren said

Thursday. “I think the good thing is people are paying attention. I talk about that a lot, how frustrating it is when people feel like elections don’t matter or ‘I don’t have to vote because my vote doesn’t matter.’

“I sense something different this time. I think people are paying attention and are motivated, maybe because they dislike one person or the other person so much, so it should be pretty interesting to have maybe the two least-liked candidates on either side who are our nominees, but it is what it is. I believe in the process.

“Donald Trump wasn’t my first choice or second choice, but I like a lot of the decisions he’s making early on.”

Hultgren’s first choice for the GOP

nomination was Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

As for backing Trump, Hultgren said: “I’m getting there.”

Hultgren said he “appreciated” the process Trump has put together to pick a Supreme Court nominee. He was less enthusiastic about some of Trump’s other policy plans, including building a wall along the border with Mexico and a temporary ban on all Muslims entering the country.

Hultgren said that if a permanent border wall is what is needed to protect American sovereignty, he would support it. However, he said there might be alternatives to building a permanent structure. As for the ban on Muslims, he said that protecting the U.S. from radicals is important,

but a ban was unrealistic.

“That’s never going to happen,” he said.

Brett May, Illinois sales service manager for Vulcan Materials Co., said the company appreciates the work Hultgren has done for the industry, including his support of the FAST Act, which provides $305 billion “for surface transportation infrastructure planning and investment,” according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Vulcan, the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates, employs 7,000 people at 315 facilities in 20 states.

Hultgren faces Gurnee Democrat Jim Walz in a contest to keep his seat representing the 14th Congressional District in November.

DeKalb police give safety lesson to Camp Discover participants

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A group of youngsters in a DeKalb Park District summer camp got a lesson on the ABCs of bike safety Thursday.

DeKalb police officer Josh Boldt instructed the kids to remember to check the tire pressure, the brakes, and the crank (or pedal system) on their bike before taking off on it. The lesson was part of his bicycle safety presentation held at Littlejohn Elementary School – where the children attend Camp Discover.

“It teaches them valuable skills,” Boldt said about the safety activity. “We hope to boost their confidence a little.”

Boldt is a certified bike safety instructor and 51/2-year veteran of the police department.

He explained to the children that bicycles accidents are not only commonplace, but most often occur on the sidewalk. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that in 2013, the last year for which data is available, about 500,000 people ended up in the emergency room for bike-related injuries.

His presentation included a public address in the gymnasium and a handson demonstration on the playground that included small obstacle courses.

Jonathan Duffy, 10, and his pal like to whiz through their neighborhood on their bikes. The St. Mary’s Catholic School fifth-grader said he didn’t realize until Boldt told the group that most accidents happen on the sidewalks. That gave him pause.

“I’m going to be more safe now,” Jonathan said.

The kids, some using bikes with training wheels and all of them in helmets, rounded the playground and went through the obstacle courses, seemingly mindful of what Boldt was trying to teach them.

Riding through cones and making a sharp turn, he said, was a way to show the youngsters how to get around an object they may suddenly approach and not have time to brake, or when braking would cause them to flip over the bike’s handlebars and possibly be injured.

This was the first year for the bike safety presentation as part of Camp Discover.

Rachel Schmit, recreation supervisor for the DeKalb Park District, said the demonstration also is part of a bigger plan to help the city of DeKalb in its quest to be designated a bike-friendly community.

The Active Transportation Committee, which is part of the Live Healthy DeKalb collaborative with the DeKalb County Department of Health, is looking to make it possible for people to use bikes, if they want to, as an alternate mode of transportation.

“This is something that will help us to get the word out, and make sure kids understand the safety of biking,” Schmit said.

She said that the lessons the children learned Thursday are steps forward in that goal.

The statewide median price in June was $204,000 up 5.8 percent from June 2015 when the median price was $192,800. The median is a typical market price where half the homes sold for more and half sold for less. The yearto-date median price was $183,174, a 7.3 percent gain, according to the IAR. “Sellers continue to reap the rewards of a summer market where buyers are choosing from a greatly diminished pool of properties,” IAR President Mike Drews said in a statement. “The market dynamics we have experienced throughout the spring and early summer persist as the number of homes for sale struggle to keep pace with buyer demand.”

Nationally, Americans bought more homes in June, the fourth straight monthly gain as the sales rate reached its highest level in more than nine years. The National Association of Realtors said Thursday that sales of existing homes rose 1.1 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.57 million, the best performance since February 2007. Buyers are quickly making offers amid tight supplies of homes on the market, boosting prices as the traditional buying season reached its crescendo.

DeKALB – Home sales ticked up 1.4 percent in DeKalb County last month as prices increased and inventory decreased.

There were 148 existing homes sold in DeKalb County in June, up 1.4 percent from 146 homes sold in June 2015, according to figures released Thursday by the Illinois Association of Realtors.

Year-to-date, closed sales were down 2.1 percent to 564 through June, that’s compared with 576 during the first six months of 2015.

The median sales price in the county increased 6.2 percent last month to $154,950, up from $145,950 in June 2015.

Through June, the median sales price in the county was $148,200, a 5.9 percent increase over the $140,000 median sales price in the first six months of last year. Single-family home median sales prices rose 4.3 percent to $164,750 in June while condo prices jumped 19.8 percent to $137,750. The IAR report notes that activity for one month can look extreme because of small sample size.

The number of homes for sale in the county in June declined 19.4 percent to 411, that’s down from 510 in June 2015. With inventory more scarce, those homes on the market sold at a faster pace. The number of days on the market until a sale fell 7.6 percent to 61 days last month, compared with 66 days during the same month last year.

Year-to-date, the days on market until sale is down 16.5 percent to 71 days, compared with 85 days during the first six months of last year.

Statewide, home sales gained 1.4 percent to hit 18,593, up from 18,328 in June 2015. Year-to-date, home sales totaled 78,547 homes sold, an increase of

Plane crash in Joliet leaves pilot dead, house damaged

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Brittany Grajewski was in the Brighton Lakes subdivision’s pool Thursday morning when she heard what she thought was thunder from above.

But as Grajewski, an attendant at the pool, looked to the sky, she saw a small plane twirling toward Earth as it traveled north over Theodore Street. She saw debris fall off the plane, although she said it wasn’t large enough to be a wing or propeller.

Grajewski believes the pilot was trying to land in one of the neighborhood’s retention ponds.

“You could tell the pilot was in panic mode, trying to find somewhere to land it,” she said.

Authorities said parts of the plane were located as far as a mile away, suggesting it might have been coming apart before it hit the ground at 11:14

The smoldering wreckage of the plane lay in a Brighton Lakes roadway as area residents tried to extinguish flames using garden hoses before emergency crews arrived. The crash also caused a house at 1812 Hampton Court to catch on fire, leaving it charred but the homeowners and their pets alive. Public property records show the house is owned by Richard and Patricia Daniel.

“We are very fortunate to have a plane crash in a crowded residential neighborhood like this and not have any additional injuries,” Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said. “It’s amazing.”

Ed Malinowski with the National Transportation Safety Board said the plane was a Piper PA-30, The Associated Press reported. It had taken off from Florida and landed in Tennessee before taking off again to head toward Wisconsin.

Heat linked to crops working up ‘corn sweat’

The Associated Press CHICAGO – The Midwest’s first dangerous bout of heat and humidity this summer is partly to blame on the moisture piped out of the ground and into the atmosphere by the increasing acreage of corn crops reaching peak maturity, meteorologists and atmospheric researchers said.

That muggy mist, jokingly called “corn sweat,” gets blown around the country, even enveloping more distant urban areas, like Chicago and Minneapolis. The phenomenon – long familiar to weather geeks, less so to the rest of us – spawned playful banter on social media this week. As heat indexes top the 100-degree mark, here is a look at the steamy situation and the role of golden ears of corn:

Basically, when corn crops mature in late July, they act like billions of straws drawing up soil moisture. It beads up on vast leafy canopies and is carried off by warmer air.

Much of the humidity enveloping the region this week is siphoned off the Gulf of Mexico, but a measurable contribution comes from corn and soybean crops, said researchers like Ken Kunkel, a professor of atmospheric sciences at N.C. State University.

“It’s a real thing. Calling it sweat is interesting,” he said with a laugh. “I never heard that particular term before.”

BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND

Once that added moisture from the corn belt is picked up in the air, it spreads fast to places like Chicago.

Report: No pattern of hiding evidence by Chicago lawyers

CHICAGO – A former federal prosecutor hired by the city of Chicago to review how City Hall attorneys handle excessive-force lawsuits against police found no evidence that they regularly hide or obstruct access to evidence, a report unveiled Thursday said.

Critics have alleged for years that taxpayer-funded city attorneys frequently seek to subvert the evidence-gathering process in civil cases in bids to keep damage payouts down or to deflect bad publicity from the mayor. But the 70-page report released after a six-month review of the city law department’s civil rights division by former U.S. Attorney Dan Webb appears to reject such assertions.

“We did not find evidence establishing a culture, practice, or approach in the Division of intentionally concealing evidence or engaging in intentional misconduct relating to discovery practices or other

obligations,” it said.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel agreed to the review after U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang in January rebuked city attorney Jordan Marsh for intentionally hiding evidence in a lawsuit that stemmed from the fatal shooting of Darius Pinex, who was black. Marsh then resigned.

Term of grand jury hearing ex-Rep. Schock’s case ends

CHICAGO – The term of a federal grand jury that heard evidence for more than a year on possible spending violations by former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock has expired, although legal experts said that doesn’t mean the Illinois Republican is off the legal hook.

Schock, a onetime rising GOP star from Peoria, came under intense scrutiny in early 2015 for his spending, including the redecoration of his office in the style of TV’s “Downton Abbey.” He resigned under pressure in March 2015, and grand jury subpoenas for his records were issued.

U.S. court districts typically have at least one grand jury impaneled at any one time, with 23 members hearing evidence on multiple cases simultaneously.

Illinois jobless rate falls in June but workforce shrunk

CHICAGO – Illinois’ unemployment rate fell for a second straight month in June, but state officials said the drop was because of, at least in part, people leaving the workforce.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security said Thursday that the jobless rate for June fell to 6.2 percent from 6.4 percent the previous month. May’s decrease was the first drop after seven straight months of increases.

Director Jeff Mays said in a news release that Illinois’ workforce declined by 2,200 in June and the state has lost more than 9,000 manufacturing jobs over the past year.

OpenBook site allows users to follow the money

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois comptroller’s office has created a website to increase government transparency by allowing the public to track political contributions and state contracts.

The website is called OpenBook.

Comptroller Leslie Munger’s office said it includes a “Google-like” feature allowing users to enter the name of an organization doing business with the state and search political contributions from it or its employees.

It combines information from the comptroller’s accounting system with information collected by the Illinois State Board of Elections in one place.

Munger said in a news release Wednesday that she believes “government should be an open book.”

She called the site a “true portal of transparency for state government, where every dollar donated to a campaign is recorded and can be traced back to any state contract awarded.”

Why black men fear any encounter with the police

Charles Kinsey held his hands in the air and shouted to police that the autistic man sitting on the street next to him wasn’t dangerous. A few seconds later, he felt a bullet rip into his leg.

The therapist, who is black and works with people with disabilities, was rounding up a patient who had wandered away from a facility when he was ordered by police officers to lie on the ground. Kinsey imagined that “as long as I’ve got my hands up, they’re not going to shoot me. This is what I’m thinking. Wow, was I wrong,” he told a television station.

The shooting in Florida earlier this week illustrates the long-standing fear among black men that almost any encounter with police can go awry with potentially deadly results, even when a person follows every law enforcement command.

Police are known to pull their triggers “no matter how you follow their directions,” emphasized Isaial Murray, a black 28-year-old construction worker in Detroit.

Some black men question why police seem to avoid using deadly force on dangerous white suspects, such as Dylan Roof, who is charged with killing nine blacks last year in a church in South Carolina, but are quick to point a gun at blacks.

“I see incidents with a white person with a gun on their hip and ... they don’t pull their gun. They pull their Taser to calm them down,” said Travis Haynes, 35, of Orlando, who is black. “But when it comes to a black man, the first thing they do is draw their gun.”

An officer then fired three times, striking Kinsey in the leg, Cuevas said.

Police were responding to reports of a man with a gun threatening to kill himself, and the officers arrived “with that threat in mind,” the chief said. No gun was recovered.

The 27-year-old patient was not harmed. Police have not released the name or race of the officer who fired but said he’s been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The latest shooting comes after two black men were killed at the hands of police in Louisiana and Minnesota. Alton Sterling died July 5 during a scuffle with two white Baton Rouge police officers at a convenience store where he was selling CDs, as he had done for years. The officers were responding to a call of a man threatening someone with a gun. They have said they found a gun in Sterling’s pocket. That shooting, captured on cellphone video, provoked widespread protests about police treatment of the black community.

It was soon followed by the death of Philando Castile, who was legally registered to carry a gun and told an officer that he had a weapon during a July 6 traffic stop in a St. Paul suburb. Then the officer fatally shot him.

Moments later, in a live Facebook stream, his girlfriend said the officer had asked for Castile’s license and shot him when he moved to retrieve it.

Rick Blanding, a black 28-year-old window cleaner in Detroit, said he follows orders whenever confronted by police.

“You got to understand you’re dealing with two sides,” he said, citing people on the right and wrong sides of the law. “Whenever police stop me, I follow their instructions. Do I trust them? Some.

I fear for my life with some.”

Police need to acknowledge this feeling among black men and work to find a solution, said Chuck Drago, a white former police chief in Oviedo, Florida.

“Perception is reality. If people believe that, then we as the police have to do something to prove that wrong,” Drago said. “There’s a lot of ways to do that, but we can’t ignore it. We can’t say: ‘It’s not true. You’re mistaken.’ ”

Take rest of July off, then back to work Illinois’ terrible financial crisis shows no signs of abating. If anything, the state’s financial outlook has gotten worse.

In the wake of the June 30 stopgap budget (with a full year’s worth of spending for K-12 schools and a half-year budget for everything else), two reports last week spelled out the carnage.

1. The stopgap budget calls for an annual deficit of nearly $8 billion – a new record for fiscal irresponsibility in Illinois.

The lawmaker who asked the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability to review the budget deal, state Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, said the worsening deficit is a ticking time bomb.

“We’re setting up a major disaster,” McSweeney said. A major tax increase soon will become “a self-fulfilling prophecy,” he said.

Instead, Gov. Bruce Rauner should get those lawmakers back to work pronto on negotiating a fullyear budget. Rauner should call a special session of the Illinois General Assembly for the first of August.

If lawmakers fail to approve a full-year balanced budget, Rauner should call another special session for the first of September. If that fails, he should call another special session for the first of October. And if that fails, he should call another special session for the first of November. That’s right. One week before the election. Lawmakers never want to make tough choices before the election. They’re afraid it could hurt their chances with voters.

We say, Illinois is in an unprecedented crisis.

Tough choices need to be made now, not later. Business as usual won’t rescue the state. Taking precious months off for politics as usual won’t save it, either.

Voters need to know what their representatives and senators, individually and collectively, will do to set things right – before the election, not afterward.

To the Editor: I read with interest the recent article regarding the resignation of the Kishwaukee College Foundation Director.

As the current President of the Kishwaukee College Foundation Board of Directors, I have quite a bit of insight into the matter.

I can tell you that Marshal Hayes’ resignation was not “abrupt” as the headline would indicate. Marshall had spoken to me many times over the last few months regarding his intentions to begin looking for a new position. He has been very open and candid about his desire to look for new challenges.

I would also like to challenge the general tone of the article which seems to indicate some underlying issues with his employment. I have been on the Kishwaukee College Foundation Board for all of Marshall’s tenure as Executive Director of Development and I can tell you that we are very happy with Marshall’s performance.

During his time as director, Marshall has more than doubled the size of the foundation endowment while simultaneously providing hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for deserving students.

I know I speak for my fellow board members when I say that we wish him well in his next position and appreciate everything he has done to grow and strengthen the Kishwaukee College Foundation.

To the Editor: Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill to allow the boards of trustees of public universities and community col-

leges to decide whether to allow the sale of alcohol at public events.

Did politicians and university officials consider the high costs of alcohol?

The economic cost of alcohol is $807 per person per year, whether you drink or not. The cost is $249 billion annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Underage drinking and alcohol abuse by college students are major concerns both for individuals and the campus community. Virtually all students experience the effects of college drinking, whether they drink or not.

One fourth of college students experience academic consequences because of drinking and 20 percent met the criteria for alcohol abuse/dependence, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Colleges students are injured, assaulted, attempt suicide, experience sexual abuse, health problems and die each year as a result of alcohol.

Alcohol related problems tend to go up when alcohol is more readily accessible to young adults. Allowing the sale of alcohol at sporting and public events at colleges could lead to an increase in underage drinking, alcohol abuse, and drinking and driving.

The boards of trustees at Illinois’ universities and community colleges will develop their alcohol policies within the next six months.

This fear takes its toll, whittling away at our self-esteem and rendering us timid in a country that needs our strength. It takes courage to accept the truth that although terrorism surely is a threat in the world, most of us Americans are free of danger every day of our lives. Living this truth unleashes our own powers as citizens, emboldening us to elect leaders who reflect the enduring optimism that continues to make this country imperfectly great.

A leader is not someone who reflects the worst within us, leaving us cowering in the shadows.

A leader reminds us who we are – and inspires us to try harder.

American men are falling behind in workforce The headline on the front page of the June 21 edition of the Daily Journal read “Why America’s men aren’t working.”

The story detailed some of the reasons why many of the nation’s men are sitting at home without jobs. In their prime working years, the ages between 25 and 54, as many as one in six men are not in the labor force at all. That means they are not seeking work. They are, thus, hidden in the job statistics as the official unemployment rates count only those who are seeking work.

There is more: • Women have come to increasingly dominate college life. By the time people reach their late 20s, there are now only three male college graduates for every four female graduates.

• It begins earlier than that.

The National Bureau of Economic Research notes that one in 10 girls will be suspended sometime during elementary school. The figure is one in four for boys. Boys now fall behind early, and in many cases, stay behind.

• Women have been much more successful, in recent years, in breaking barriers in men’s professions, than men have been in carving out new careers in women’s professions.

Women now constitute one-third of new doctors and lawyers. Yet men are only one-tenth of all nurses and one-fifth of elementary school teachers.

There are some definite reasons for school success. Again, the National Bureau of Economic Research notes that girls simply do more homework. They develop sooner,

are more realistic and work harder.

The National Fatherhood Initiative notes that one in three boys now grow up without a father at home. About Parenting notes homes without fathers account for 71 percent of high school dropouts and 70 percent of children in juvenile detention.

It’s not popular to talk of troubled youth who grow up to be unemployed men.

It is, however, important that the discussion begin.

My first up-close glimpse into the enduring power of political fearmongering came through a two-way mirror in 2006.

I was watching a focus group of women in southern Ohio discussing a variety of issues, when the topic turned to terrorism. One young mother shared her fear that foreign terrorists might attack her children’s playground in their small town.

“It could happen,” she said, looking around the table. “We all know it could.”

Several of the other women nodded their heads. My notes from that evening describe one of the women shivering as she pulled her cardigan tighter and said, “Really, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before they find us.”

There was no logical reason for these women to believe that in their remote patch of Ohio, a suicide bomber from the Middle East would fly a plane into their children’s school or blow himself up on their playground.

But Republican rhetoric had worked its magic, and these women lived in constant fear for their fami-

Logan Breese and Melanie Yaeger graduated from the Pingree Grove Fire Academy in the Basic Operator Fire Fighter Program on June 18. During the course of four months, the students were instructed in all aspects of firefighting, hazmat response, safety, proper procedures, protocols and more. With the completion of the course they were given the status of firefighter. Breese and Yaeger are with the Cortland Fire Department.

The Sycamore Music Boosters recently received a donation from Frank and Suzanne Riccardi of Riccardi’s Red Hots and Soda Fountain.

The Riccardis opened the diner in 2008 and it quickly became a hot spot and safe hangout for Sycamore High School music students. SHS band members frequented the local establishment after every home football game, basketball game and other events.

The Riccardi’s son, Frankie Jr., was a SHS alum with a passion for football and music. He played on the football team and also became an accomplished guitarist and artist during high school, graduating in 2000. In 2005, Frankie died unexpectedly, so when the Riccardis opened their restaurant, they set up a music fund in his honor.

Over the years, customers donated to the fund and the Riccardis were able to grow the fund. When the diner closed this spring, the Riccardis decided to donate $2,000 to the Sycamore Music Boosters and SHS band

A total of $21,120 in scholarships has been awarded by the Mary K. Roberts Scholarship Foundation for the 2016-2017 year, according to Michael A. Cullen, regional president of First Midwest Bank in Sycamore, trustee for the foundation.

The selection of recipients is restricted to graduates of Sycamore High School who major in social work, sociology, nursing and health-related fields. Under the terms of the foundation trust agreement, no more than four scholarships can be awarded to students attending Northern Illinois University.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com A college coaching staff can send an incoming freshman all the workout packets he or she can handle – it’s not until the athlete gets on campus that one sees the difference summer workouts make.

At least, that was the experience of a pair of local soccer players. Sycamore graduate Drew Moulton is entering her sophomore year at Valparaiso, and DeKalb graduate Morgan Beaty is set to start her junior year at Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Both said they take their offseason workouts at home seriously – and both said it was because of lessons learned before their freshman years on campus.

“I kind of did my own thing and didn’t take it seriously,” Moulton said. “And it put me at a disadvantage. I should have been following those workouts. But this is my second year having been on the fitness regimen, so I know.”

Moulton, a goalkeeper with the Crusaders, said she also has focused on outdoor workouts this year.

“I used an indoor treadmill

to run, and that by the time we got to the turf and the heat it was just awful,” Moulton said. “I thought I would just save myself the misery and start outside.”

In 25 games (24 starts), Beaty scored four goals and

had eight assists last year for the Warhawks in 1,188 minutes – 220 more than she had in her freshman season in which she scored two goals and had four assists.

She said as an incoming freshman, she was more used

to the high school grind where you play yourself into shape as the season goes on. The past two years, she’s been more prepared.

Beaty said practicing away from the structure of a team can present some challenges.

“For me, I’m extremely competitive, so not having teammates, coaches, strength coaches there, it’s a mental hump you have to get over in training,” Beaty said. “You have to know what’s best for yourself, whether it’s finding a partner to push you or setting smart goals. That’s definitely a lot more difficult, but it’s definitely manageable.”

Moulton appeared in five games for the Crusaders last year in her freshman season.

Her best performance came in a 1-0 win against Cleveland State, in which she saved two shots. She had 11 saves in her first game against Notre Dame, but she and the team gave up six goals in that one.

She said the offseason regimen takes a lot of discipline, but said she knows the results definitely are worth it.

“You don’t have the push from your teammates or coaches, so you have to force yourself to workout,” Moulton said. “A lot of times you’re like, ‘Eh, I really don’t want to do this,’ or ‘I really want to take an off day,’ and being your own boss is difficult. But I definitely got used to it, and with the not wanting to do it every day, I got past it.”

CHICAGO – General manager Rick Hahn, his team “mired in mediocrity” for much too long, acknowledged Thursday that the White Sox’s plan isn’t working and that management is open-minded to a complete rebuild.

“The only thing we’ve probably ruled out as we approach this (Aug. 1 trade) deadline is adding short-term rentals, taking an asset that could be of value long term for something that would improve us only for this 2016 season,” Hahn said.

It’s where the Sox finished in the past two seasons, one place above 2013 when they were last.

As Hahn said, the plan is not working. Besides Sale and Quintana, the Sox have an ample supply of players under team control beyond this season, including Todd Frazier, David Robertson, Melky Cabrera, Adam Eaton, Jose Abreu and Nate Jones. All have trade value. Having them all under contract control beyond this season, along with an entire starting rotation that can return, also is a reason to add pieces before next year to take another shot. But that approach hasn’t worked.

“Jerry is open-minded to all of the options in front of us,” Hahn said. “This

isn’t the first conversation we’ve had about this, the first time we’ve talked about the notion of a longer time horizon.

“We’re mired in mediocrity. That’s not the goal, that’s not acceptable, that’s not what we’re trying to accomplish for the long term.

“We may well have to adjust and take a long-term view, a different approach going forward.”

With premium trade chips such as Sale, who is under team control through 2019 with a $15 million club option that year, or Quintana (through 2020 at $10.5 million), Hahn knows what the Sox have: Tremendous value.

“Could someone conceivably put together something that moves us? Absolutely,” Hahn said. “But we know how special some of the players we have under control are. And we have in our mind what arguably is appropriate coming back. And the fact is, no one may meet that price at this point in time.”

That’s because teams looking to add now don’t want to part with players they need to get them where they want to go. For Sale or Quintana, the Sox would want a package of major leaguers and prospects.

OK, Cubs, time to see if you can win 103 games One year ago, the Cubs reported for work on the next-to-last Friday of July with a promising enough record of 5143. If they weren’t yet of the same class as the Cardinals, or even the Pirates, they clearly were getting closer.

The Phillies – the worst team in baseball – were in town, presenting the Cubs with a chance to get a second-half hot streak going. Who knows? Maybe the postseason was a possibility.

Three days later, the wretched Phillies completed a sweep of the Cubs by a combined score of 21-8. The series finale got so out of hand, catcher David Ross pitched the top of the ninth inning.

It was kind of funny at the time ... but not really.

“It was a terrible day,” said manager Joe Maddon, and good luck finding his trademark positive outlook in those words.

But things would get so much better from there. After that Phillies series, the Cubs ripped off a 16-2 streak that turned into a thrilling 46-19 run to end the regular season.

In all, they were 46-22 in their final 68 contests, which happens to be the

You want a “target” for these Cubs? There’s a heck of a target. Who wouldn’t sign up, on this next-to-last Friday of July, for 46-22 the rest of the way? It would put the Cubs, 57-37, at 103 victories.

Last we checked, that still was pretty good.

There’ve been a lot of questions asked by a lot of people lately about just how capable the Cubs are of finishing the season as well as they started it. But the starting pitching has returned to form since the All-Star break. Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant are two-man-ganging up on every opponent they face. Dexter Fowler’s return will only help.

And then there’s the schedule from here. It begins with three games at the Cubs fans’ home away from home – Miller Park in Milwaukee – and then four against the bumbling White Sox.

The sweet stench of opportunity is all around the Cubs now.

ras has ruined the Cubs’ season. Since the rookie’s first major league start June 20, the team has gone 10-17.

OK, so maybe it hasn’t been all Contreras’ fault. In fact, he has been as good as advertised with his bat – he’s hitting .333 at Wrigley Field – and even better than that with his throwing arm from behind the plate. And then there’s his play in left field … which we won’t get into.

Down: Ben Zobrist had a rough June at the plate, but at least he rallied with six hits in the final three games of that month to raise his average to .301. Since then, Zobrist has been awful, with zero multi-hit games and only five hits in 50 July at-bats. At least he got to start the All-Star Game.

Up: For the second year in a row – by a little more than 100 fans a game – the Cubs trail only the Dodgers among all major league teams in average road attendance.

Both clubs have, of course, large and far-flung fan bases. Yet the Dodg-

ers have the advantage of playing in the National League West, where the ballparks are larger than those in the NL Central.

The Dodgers have been the NL’s top road draw for four consecutive seasons. As recently as 2013, the Cubs ranked ninth in the NL.

AND ANOTHER THING

If one had to squeeze a Cubs starter out of the playoff rotation today, it pretty much would have to be Jason Hammel. Right? Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester are off-limits. John Lackey is too experienced and fearless. And Kyle Hendricks has been just plain too good.

Pretty nuts, though, when one recalls Hammel’s brilliance in the first two months of the season, when he was 7-1 with a skimpy 2.14 ERA. Hammel, who’ll pitch Friday’s opener in Milwaukee, finally earned victory No. 8 in his most recent start. If he gets tuned up again, things could look quite different.

BEARS TRAINING CAMP POSITION ANALYSIS: CORNERBACKS

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com The Bears bring back their starting three cornerbacks from the end of 2015: Tracy Porter, Kyle Fuller and Bryce Callahan. They also retained Sherrick McManis, Jacoby Glenn and De’Vante Bausby. Six returning players, and then three rookies form the group of nine that might be the most underdiscussed position group for the Bears this offseason, one that is not free of question marks.

Three things to watch at cornerback in training camp: Fuller’s progression: It’s Year 3 now for Fuller, the 14th overall pick from 2014. He has the size and athleticism to be an effective cornerback, one who should thrive in Vic Fangio’s defense.

It took Fuller a few games last season, but he ended up playing well down the stretch, finishing with two interceptions and nine passes defensed.

Embarrassingly for the Bears, those two picks led the team. Fuller needs to make more plays on the ball. As someone not acquired by this regime, Fuller’s long-term future with the Bears isn’t safe, adding importance to how he plays this season, and it starts in camp, where he’ll get quite the tests in receivers Alshon Jeffery and Kevin White.

What’s next for Porter: Tracy Porter emerged as the Bears’ top defensive back last season, highlighted by his four-passes-defensed performance in the upset win in Green Bay. At 29, Porter is the oldest defensive back on the team with by far the most game experience. He’s the leader of a secondary that has to create more turnovers.

Training camp This is the ninth of our position-by-position series previewing what to watch in Bears training camp.

Porter was counted on in some games to shadow the opposing team’s top receiver, and Fangio and coach John Fox could do that again this season.

Coming off a fully healthy offseason, Porter – who wasn’t signed until June last year – should be more than ready to go. Now he has to build on last year’s performance while also mentoring the rest of the DBs. That begins in Bourbonnais, where Porter missed time last summer because of injuries.

Long-armed Hall: The Bears had a chance to get Vernon Hargreaves III in the first round, and several other corners in Rounds 2 and 3, but waited until the fourth to get Deiondre’ Hall, the long, Northern Iowa cover man. You’ll hear a lot about Hall’s wingspan, and Fangio and defensive backs coach Ed Donatell can use this summer to hone that physical advantage to help Hall’s transition to the NFL from the FCS. He can find a way to contribute on special teams, but if Hall stands out in camp, he might force Fangio and Donatell’s hands to find a way to get the rookie in the mix in a secondary that simply did not make enough impact plays last season. Making plays on the ball in training camp also will be key for undrafted rookies Kevin Peterson and Taveze Calhoun, as they try to find a way onto the roster.

Brazil nabs 10 IS backers in anti-terrorism swoop

RIO DE JANEIRO – Ten Brazilians who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State militant group were arrested Thursday, authorities announced, describing them as “amateurs” who discussed on social media the possibility of staging attacks during next month’s Olympics.

Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes said in the capital, Brasilia, that the 10 were being held on two terrorism-related charges and that two more people were being sought.

Authorities said any attack plan would have had little chance of coming to fruition, citing the group’s lack of resources and skills.

But officials and security experts argued that police were justified in being aggressive in light of “lone wolf” attacks staged in the U.S. and Europe by men with little or no training.

Moraes said police acted because the group discussed using weapons and guerrilla tactics to potentially launch an at-

tack during the Olympics, which begin Aug. 5 in Rio de Janeiro. They will remain in police custody for at least 30 days.

“They were complete amateurs and ill-prepared” to actually launch an attack,” Moraes said. “A few days ago they said they should start practicing martial arts, for example.”

He said there were no specific targets for an attack, but that even disorganized groups have to be taken seriously.

The possibility of an attack is not so “far-fetched” even though Brazil never has been a target for terrorism, said Alex Kassirer, a counterterrorism analyst at Flashpoint, a New York-based intelligence group.

“The Olympics is a really unique opportunity to be able to target a concentration of all of the enemies in one area,” she said.

Kassirer pointed out the Islamic State group launched a channel in May on the messaging app Telegram to disseminate jihadi propaganda specifically in Portuguese. On Sunday, another channel vowed allegiance to IS, although its authenticity has not been determined, she said.

NBA moving All-Star Game out of Charlotte, cites LGBT law

The NBA is moving the 2017 All-Star Game out of Charlotte because of its objections to a North Carolina law that limits anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay and transgender people.

The league had expressed its opposition to the law known as HB2 since it was enacted in March, and its decision Thursday came less than a month after state legislators revisited the law and chose to leave it largely unchanged.

“While we recognize that the NBA cannot choose the law in every city, state, and country in which we do business, we do not believe we can successfully host our All-Star festivities in Charlotte in the climate created by HB2,” the league said in a statement.

The league added that it hoped to announce a new location for next February’s events shortly. It hopes to reschedule the 2019 game for Charlotte

if there is a resolution to the matter.

Russians lose track appeal; IOC to weigh total ban for Rio

LONDON – Now that Russian track and field athletes have failed in their effort to have their Olympic ban overturned, it’s up to the IOC to decide whether to kick the entire Russian team out of the games that begin in 15 days in Rio de Janeiro.

In another blow to the image of the sports superpower, the highest court in sports Thursday dismissed an appeal by 68 Russian track athletes of the ban imposed by the IAAF after allegations of systematic and state-sponsored doping.

Sports officials in Moscow condemned the ruling as “political,” and said some athletes might take their case to civil courts. Two-time Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva said the Rio Games will be devalued, with only “pseudo-gold medals” available.

Now, there’s more we need to study and understand. For example, how much do babies need to eat to prevent allergy?

For which foods does this work? But given that food allergies affect about one in 13 children, it is exciting news.

There are a couple of important safety caveats: • If your baby has a known or suspected food allergy, or there is a history of food allergies in the family, talk to your doctor before starting any solid foods.

• Don’t ever give babies or toddlers actual peanuts; they are a choking hazard.

Instead, use peanut butter (smooth), oils and pastes.

Why did doctors once advise against giving babies peanuts (or peanut products) for two or three years, and why did the advice change? Doctors thought an infant’s developing immune system might react badly to foods, such as peanuts, to which allergies develop.

But then a U.S. peanut allergy specialist visiting Israel discovered few Israeli children develop peanut allergies – and most Israeli children are fed peanut products in the first years of life. At that point, precious research funds were freed up, a study done and the truth revealed.

Dear Dr. K: In a recent column, you said parents should give babies peanut products to help prevent peanut allergies. Does the new advice also apply to other common food allergens, such as eggs or cow’s milk?

Dear Reader: To answer your question I turned to my colleague Dr. Claire McCarthy, a primary care pediatrician at Boston Children’s Hospital.

For decades, the standard advice recommended by allergy specialists was to hold off on giving babies foods that commonly cause allergic reactions. Parents were advised not to give egg, dairy, seafood or wheat in their child’s first year. And parents were told to wait until two or three years to give peanuts or other nut products.

It turns out that was bad advice.

What’s changed? A few years ago, research began to suggest there was no particular benefit in waiting to give those foods. Children seemed to develop food allergies whether their parents waited or not.

And then a year ago, research showed giving babies peanut products earlier in life made it less likely they would develop a peanut allergy.

A new study in The New England Journal of Medicine confirms last year’s study. The study involved more than 1,000 exclusively breast-fed 3-month-old babies who were divided up into two groups. The parents of one group were told to give their babies only breast milk for six months. The parents of the other group were told to give their babies six foods that often cause allergic reactions: peanut products, eggs, wheat, cow’s milk, sesame and whitefish.

The result: Fewer children in the second group ended up with peanut or egg allergy when tested between ages 1 and 3 years.

One of my older sisters moved in with Mom to help take care of her and be her companion. My sister has a boyfriend my father absolutely disliked, and the rest of our family doesn’t like him either.

As I see it, you and your other siblings have two choices: Either speak to the boyfriend and tell him – nicely – seeing him occupy your father’s special chair is painful for all of you, or replace the chair with one that has less sentimental value.

Dear Abby: Some time ago, I was descending an escalator when a suitcase belonging to the woman ahead of me got stuck. She had put the bag in front of her, and the wheels had caught on one of the steps. When she reached the bottom of the escalator, she fell over her suitcase, and then I fell over her. I scrambled on my hands and knees as fast as I could to get out of the way of the dozens of people behind us, visualizing a pileup and injuries.

Fortunately, an attendant quickly grabbed the suitcase, and no one was hurt. As he did, he said, “Never put a suitcase ahead of you on an escalator. Always carry it behind you so you can control it.” I hope this letter will save others from what could be a dangerous situation. –

Bridge players always have the ambition to reach at least game. But when the normal high-card values are not present, it can be tough to work out when game is good. Look at the North hand in today’s diagram.

You pass, partner opens one spade, you respond one no-trump (6-9 points), and he rebids two hearts.

What would you do now, if anything?

In yesterday’s deal, North was also 2-3 in the majors, but with the spade king and heart ace-queen, all magic cards. Here, North’s hand is much worse. There is a good case for passing out two hearts; it might even be a 5-3 fit. Bidding two spades is probably all right if that is passed out. A 5-2 fit usually plays better than a 4-3.

When this deal was played in a social game, North did rebid two spades. South then tried for game with three hearts, and North understandably passed. (Yes, East might have intervened with two diamonds over one no-trump.)

Against three hearts, West led her singleton diamond. Here, South would have done best to take the trick, cash the heart ace to drop the king, and continue with the spade ace and another spade. That would have led to an overtrick. Understandably, though, he immediately played two rounds of spades.

East won with his queen and gave his partner a diamond ruff. West continued with the spade king, and East overruffed the dummy. Then another diamond ruff was the defense’s fourth and last trick.
