No dog days of summer for working mom POLL I enjoy the scorching summer heat. This weather warms my bones. By far, summer is my favorite season, and it’s not just because my birthday is in August.

The No. 1 reason I enjoy summer thoroughly is because I am a teacher. Yes, that means I have my summers off. During the school year, I don ’t have as much time with my daughter, so I relish even the sweltering hot days.

The warm weather means that on any given day there is some sort of excitement. Parents and kids are always planning on an event. We are attending countless graduation parties, cookouts, family reunions and festivals.

Catching up with friends and family is time well-spent.

On the weekdays I have tried to make special memories on a budget. Going to the Hopkins Pool has been an affordable blast. My daughter loves the splash pad and throwing her toy crab down the slide.

Since she is 2 years old, she is free and I pay only $4 with my military identification. Being able to witness my daughter gain confidence in the water has made this mama so happy.

My Facebook page is filled with my daughter Hannah Jo’s smiling face, as she enjoys the free events at the DeKalb Library. We’ve participated in a Hawaiian dance, giggled at the trick dogs, were in awe of Superwoman and couldn’t get enough of the interactive story times.

Watching her learn has been so rewarding.

On Thursdays we have walked the short distance to the farmers market in Van Buer Plaza, where we have tasted honey and bought strawberries. Being out and about with Hannah Jo has provided us a sense of community I would not otherwise have experienced during the school year.

Any day without rain, you can see Hannah Jo and me cruising on the bike. She sits in the back trailer singing all sorts of nursery rhymes.

Are you watching the Republican National Convention?

Singing with her, as we are on the bike trails, gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Memories I know we are making.

For me, it is easy to be a mama this season.

Some say the dog days of summer are upon us.

I understand what it means but I just don’t agree with the statement. I realize some folks don’t like the scorching heat. Air conditioning is their best friend and sweat is their enemy.

People are complaining about the heat and humidity and can’t wait for fall.

How soon Illinoisans forget that we are only halfway to Christmas.

Instead, let us appreciate this delicious weather while we’re in the thick of it. Being a mother for the past three summers has really put the season into perspective. It gives me an opportunity to be a full-time mother without the distraction of work.

By the middle of August, I will be back to teaching. This is really going to put a damper on making sunshine memories with my Hannah Jo. Fortunately, I love my job. Unfortunately, any other season reminds me that I won’t have so much time with my sweet daughter. Thank goodness we still have some summer left to cherish.

TODAY’S TALKER Love Locks fence to be removed, portion to go on display

PORTLAND, Maine – A landmark in Maine where thousands of people have pledged their everlasting love to another with padlocks has been deemed a public safety risk and will be removed.

The Portland Press Herald reported the city’s 30-foot-long Love Locks fence will be removed in the next two weeks but a portion will be displayed in a nearby parking lot.

People attach padlocks to the fence, viewed as a symbol of love like one removed in Paris. The city-owned fence is near Portland Harbor and has been sagging under the weight of hundreds of locks.

City spokeswoman Jessica Grondin said a portion of the chain link fence came loose from its frame about two weeks ago. The replacement fence won’t allow locks to be attached to it.

4-H members present their projects this week for judging

A recent 4-H project allowed the 16-year-old to see herself reflected in parts of him as never before, and better understand the heart condition that meant for the first time, he wouldn’t be there to see her finished project.

More than 250 children gathered Wednesday at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau’s Center for Agriculture, 1350 W. Prairie Drive, Sycamore, to enter their food and visual art creations in the 4-H General Projects Show. Students will be recognized for their yearlong efforts at an awards program 7 p.m. today, 4-H program coordinator Nicole Groezinger said.

“They do a conference judging where the judge talks to them and sees how the project went, what went well, what maybe didn’t go so well,” Groezinger said.

Schmit’s achievements in both health and woodworking have won her a spot at the state fair the past five years, but this year’s project required something extra – something emotionally demanding – from her.

Schmit’s grandfather and former 4-H project judge, William Susina, died Feb. 13 of congestive heart failure. He was 64.

Along with the photographs and fond memories left behind in his absence was a 45-year-old handmade bookcase that inspired Schmit’s project this year, she said.

Susina, a custom-trim carpenter, made his first bookcase when he was 19 years old. Earlier this month, Schmit refurbished the case, and added a personal touch by hanging a mirror between both columns of shelves.

“It made me cry. I would just start crying when I was out there because he made it,” Schmit said. “It just made me miss him more.”

Susina helped Schmit complete the desk she submitted last year.

The two pieces were designed to be a matching set, she said. “[My grandma] says all the time that he’d be thrilled,” Schmit said.

“She’s happy about it.”

As the day went on, Schmit also gave a presentation on congestive heart failure, while others showed off intricately decorated cakes, presentations on health and wellness, and a spectrum of original visual arts.

Seated for project judging for the first time was 8-year-old Lily Dean, who submitted two watercolor pieces and wore a temporary pink streak in her hair for a boost of confidence.

Judge Mariano Spizzirri said he picked up on Lily’s nerves, but it didn’t prevent her from performing well during judging.

“He said that they both deserve a blue ribbon,” Lily said.

As as matter of fact, I kind of give that a little more weight than the project,” Spizzirri said. “If I can see that they enjoyed it, and they’re into it, and they understand the process, that’s, to me, more important than the piece. A lot of them are really young and it’s their first time, and if I get them excited about it maybe they’ll continue doing it.”

While Lily was glad to have made it through her first round of judging, 18-year-old Justene Jennings was preparing to sit through one of her

last. Jennings will start on her nursing degree at Kishwaukee College in the fall and enter her final stained glass window in the 4-H General Projects Show next summer.

“I wanted to go back into something where I could help other people and continue my knowledge of science,” she said Wednesday.

Jennings’ stained glass window won a purple ribbon at last year’s state fair. She eventually donated the piece to her local church, and plans to hand over this year’s window to her boyfriend when judging is finished, she said.

“We have no windows left in our house,” Jennings said. “I tried to design something for someone else to use and I tried to give back, which is something I’ve learned throughout 4-H.” Judging will continue from 8:30 to 11 a.m. today.

Environmental commission works to reduce plastic bag use

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Unlike some other municipalities around the state, DeKalb has not imposed an outright ban those ubiquitous single-use plastic bags that consumers get when they shop for groceries and other goods, but one local pilot program is trying to curb their use.

Members of the city’s Citizens Environmental Commission, which looks at environmental-related issues and reports on them to the City Council, hopes that the Share A Bag program it kicked off three months ago will gain more traction.

“We’re talking about raising consciousness here. People are very used to [at the store] you hand them a plastic bag,” Clare Kron, who joined the commission in 2015, told aldermen. “We want to get them out of that habit.”

Bins are now set up at five locations around the city that have nonplastic reusable bags in them. Consumers simply take as many bags from the bin as needed, Kron said, and use them to tote their purchase.

The landfill may accept municipal solid waste and non-hazardous special waste for disposal only after the landfill unit is constructed and an Illinois EPA permit authorizing its operation has been issued.

the DeKalb County Health Department on this program. Michelle Gibson, the health department’s liaison to the commission and solid-waste specialist, said that bag-filled bins cost about $100 each.

Although the health department provided the startup funds for the program, Gibson said, the goal is to share the cost.

“As people are willing to [pay for a container and initial bags], we are willing to expand the program,” Gibson said.

The copious use of plastic bags at grocery and big-box retail stores has been blasted as an environmental hazard.

The Environmental Protection Agency indicates that the bags often become litter and debris that can end up in lakes and streams. The result, according to the EPA, can be bad for wildlife and fish.

Also, the bags can take centuries to decompose because they are made with petroleum-based chemicals.

Chicago and Evanston have banned single-use plastic bags. Lake County has a pilot program for recycling them. State legislation that would require plastic-bag manufacturers to register with the Illinois EPA and come with a plan to collect and recycle them, stalled in the Senate this year.

KAREN A. EXNER

Born: May 27, 1956; in Chicago, IL Died: July 17, 2016; in Sycamore, IL Karen A. Exner, 60, of Sycamore, Illinois, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016, at home surrounded by loving family.

Born May 27, 1956, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Elmer and Bernice Wodrich, Karen married Peter Exner Jr., on April 30, 1977. She later married Neil Hillquist.

Karen was employed by CST Storage for 32 years and retired from Jewel Bake Shop after 27 years.

She is survived by her husband and best friend, Neil Hillquist; children, Kristina (Daniel) Pellerito of Camisano Vicentino, Italy, Elizabeth Exner, Cherry Valley, and Matthew Exner, DeKalb; grandsons, Kaden and Kole Pellerito of Camisano Vicentino, Italy; stepsons, Nelson, Spencer, and Collin Hillquist, Sycamore; brother, Kurt (Julie) Wodrich, Colleyville, TX; mother, Bernice Wodrich of DeKalb.

She was preceded in death by her father, Elmer Wodrich and husband, Peter Exner Jr. The memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, July 23, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with the Rev. Paul Lipinski, St. Mary Catholic Church, Sycamore, celebrating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2016, at the Anderson Funeral Home.

He resumed studies at UMD and went on to earn a master’s degree in library science at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. His first jobs took him to Missoula and Billings, MT. He completed the rest of his career at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Retirement provided Robert with the time to travel. Mexico and Central America were the destinations of choice. The many ruins and museums piqued his interest. He climbed every pyramid he could get close to. Early on, he introduced his family to his love of Mexico where the family vacationed annually for 20 continuous years.

In reflecting on Bob’s 93 years the word “dedication “ sums up his life. Dedication to family, Dedication to Country, Dedication to education, Dedication to God and the Church and Dedication to values of honesty, social justice and humility. He was such an amazing man.

Chicago man gets 4 years probation in DeKalb child sexual abuse case

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A judge sentenced a 22-year-old Chicago man to four years’ probation Wednesday, after he pleaded guilty to repeatedly meeting an underage girl for sex in DeKalb last year.

Patrick J. Scheid, of the 3700 block of North Wilton Avenue, was sentenced Wednesday to 299 days in the DeKalb County Jail, which he already has served. Scheid also received four years of probation, and is Patrick b a r r e d f r o m h a v i n g J. Scheid contact with minors, having an electronic device not monitored by court officials, or creating accounts on any social media platform.

A Facebook account with Scheid’s name and photo exists, but hasn’t

been updated since June 8, 2015. The account says Scheid also goes by the name “James Valentine.”

Scheid pleaded guilty Wednesday to possession of child pornography, traveling to meet a minor and criminal sexual abuse. He now is required to register as a sex offender.

He will be transported to the Lake County Jail in Waukegan, where similar charges are pending against him.

On July 13, 2015, DeKalb police found Scheid and a then-16-yearold girl undressed, and parked in the 1000 block of Dresser Road in DeKalb, court records show.

A search of Scheid’s cellphone revealed more than 15 images of children younger than 13 years old engaged in sexual acts, DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said at the time.

Anyone younger than 17 years old cannot legally consent to sex in Illinois.

Scheid admitted in a police inter-

view to downloading the pictures from the internet, and told officers he is attracted to children younger than 12, according to court documents.

Scheid was later released from the DeKalb County Jail when he posted

$25,000 bail.

However, he was picked up by police in November and charged with traveling to meet a minor and criminal sexual abuse.

Scheid’s Lake County case has yet to go to trial.

The pieces usually sell for under $10 apiece, but the knife handle alone probably is worthless. *** Q: I bought seven ceramic 7 1/2-inch plates at an estate sale. They’re decorated with a big yellow sun with a smiling face and orange rays. The backs of the plates are marked “Vera for Mikasa, happy sun FC 041, oven to table to dishwasher, made in Japan.” I have a collection of Vera scarves but didn’t know she designed tableware. What can you tell me about them?

A:Vera Neumann (1907-1993) was a textile designer who started her own business in 1946. Her first designs were done at her kitchen table and produced on Army surplus silk. The Vera Company was sold after she died. In 2005, Susan Seid bought the assets and contracted with other companies to make products using some of Vera’s designs.

Happy Sun is the name of the pattern of your plates made in Japan by Mikasa, an American company. Seid sold the business in 2013.

Why not collect food-storage antiques?

Food had to be specially prepared to last during the centuries before ice boxes and refrigerators. Long hours were spent smoking, pickling, drying and canning foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables were available only “in season.” Ice boxes were used in the 19th and 20th centuries. A block of ice was cut from a frozen lake then wrapped and stored in a special zinc-lined box. It melted as it cooled, and the housewife had to empty the pan of melted ice water at least once a day. The first electric refrigerator was made in 1911, and by 1923, Frigidaire was selling a home refrigerator. Early refrigerators used Freon in the cooling process, but to keep the planet green, the chemical was outlawed in the 1990s. The refrigerator-freezer combination we use today was first sold in 1939. But spices still are used to store,flavor,and preserve food.

Grocery stores of the 1890s sold spices from a large container or later, the small-sized tins sometimes used today. A spice display was an important part of the store.A 36-inchtall Pagoda shaped spice bin with original paint sold at a Showtime auction in 2015. It was a six-sided tower that held ginger, cinnamon, mustard, cloves, allspice and pepper. The revolving tower had ornate lithographed labels on the tin sections. The rare antique sold for $3,300. If that is too big, look for the small (2to 3-inch) tins that used to hold spices. The best have unusual graphics. Prices range from $5 to $25. They are still found at house sales, flea markets and online, but rarely at auctions because they are so inexpensive. *** Q: I have a piece of pottery marked “Anna Van, Colo. Spgs.”When was it made?

A: This mark was used by Van Briggle Pottery of Colorado Springs, Colo., from 1954

to 1968. Van Briggle bought Dryden Pottery in Ellsworth, Kan., in 1954 and the mark was first used on pottery made by Dryden and sold by Van Briggle. In 1956, the molds, clay and glazes were moved to Van Briggle’s site in Colorado Springs, where production of pottery marked “Anna Van” continued until 1968. Van Briggle pottery closed in 2012. *** Q: I have a round bowl that makes a belllike ping when tapped on the side. I bought it at a sale at a retirement community in 2005.

It’s yellow outside, white inside and has raised white flowers. The top is wavy and folded in.

There is a mark that looks like “G Henn.” It looks like an unmarked cameo-glass cherryblossom bowl by Thomas Webb. If it is, what is its value?

A: First of all, your bowl is called a rose bowl. And it is not glass; it’s pottery, decorated with a cameo-style design. Henn Workshops was a family business in Warren, Ohio. It was started by Gerald Henn in the early 1980s, when “American country” decorating was becoming popular. Henn was a direct-selling business that sold woodenware, handcrafted baskets, home accessories, bakeware, dinnerware and serving pieces. Eventually the company started making its own products.

It’s best known for modern reproduction spongeware. In the mid-1990s, the company moved operations to New Waterford, Ohio.

It went out of business in 2009. The factory that housed Henn’s pottery now makes coffee mugs with green signature logos for Starbucks and other collector mugs. *** Q: I found a Charlie McCarthy knife handle in things after my mother died. The blade is missing. Is the handle worth anything by itself?

A: Charlie McCarthy was a ventriloquist’s dummy used by Edgar Bergen from the 1930s to the 1970s. They appeared on stage,

Genoa-Kingston D-424 seeks candidates to fill school board vacancy DAILY CHRONICLE

Board member Angie Lauderdale has resigned, Superintendent Joe Burgess Jr. said. The board will select someone to fill the remainder of her term, which will expire in April, according to a news release from the district.

Then a bullet fired from a gun that D’Antignay Brashear never saw pierced the cheek of her 4-year-old son, Kavan Collins. It fractured the boy’s jaw and shattered some teeth before it went out his other cheek, all while he held his mother’s hand.

“He was with his mother, and it wasn’t like I was doing something wrong, having him out after hours,” said Brashear, a 21-year-old single mother of two, referring to the shooting that happened before sundown June 28 on Chicago’s South Side. “I thought he was safe.”

Kavan is part of a growing roster of children who have been shot in the city this year amid a spike in killings and shootings. More than 330 killings have occurred in the city.

So far, no child has died from the gunfire that’s often connected to gangs.

CHICAGO – A referendum allowing Illinois voters to decide if an independent commission should draw the state’s political boundaries was struck down by a judge Wednesday who ruled it was unconstitutional for November’s ballot.

Rauner approves expansion of breast cancer screenings

PARK RIDGE – Insurance plans and Medicaid providers in Illinois will be required to cover a new technology for breast cancer screenings under a new law approved by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

The 3-D mammograms that insurance plans will cover work by taking X-rays from different angles to make it easier for doctors to detect cancer.

Rauner called it a “cutting-edge screening tool” and said it puts the state at the forefront of fighting breast cancer.

The governor signed the measure Wednesday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

2 men to be released after murder charges dropped

CHICAGO – Prosecutors in Chicago on Wednesday dropped charges against two men imprisoned more than 20 years for a 1993 murder after allegations of misconduct by police investigators.

Jose Montanez and Armando Serrano were expected to be released almost immediately from Illinois prisons after Cook County prosecutors announced their decision not to retry the men.

Prosecutors’ decision came after an appeals court ruling last month found “profoundly alarming acts of misconduct” led to the men’s convictions in the death of Rodrigo Vargas.

“The principal witness from the trial has since submitted an affidavit that the trial testimony he gave was ‘false in all respects’ and it was coerced by the detectives investigating the murder,” the court stated in its ruling.

Cruz refuses to endorse Trump, hears loud boos The ASSOCIATED PRESS CLEVELAND – Undercutting calls for Republican unity, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz stubbornly refused to endorse Donald Trump Wednesday night as he addressed the GOP convention, igniting thunderous boos from furious delegates as he encouraged Americans to simply “vote your conscience” in November.

In a surreal moment, Trump unexpectedly walked into the arena just as Cruz was wrapping up his remarks. Delegates chanted Trump’s name and implored Cruz to voice his support for the businessman, to no avail.

“Vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution,” Cruz said. While he backed some of Trump’s policy proposals, including building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, he mentioned the GOP nominee by name only once.

Cruz’s defiance ripped open party divisions anew, on the summer’s biggest political stage. Trump allies were infuriated, including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who said Cruz’s decision was “totally selfish.”

The remarkable moment upended what was shaping up to be the convention’s most successful night, and overshadowed Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s national convention debut as Trump’s running mate.

“You have nominated a man for president who never quits,” Pence said. “Until now, he’s had to do it all by himself against all odds, but this week, with this united party, he’s got backup.”

Trump joined Pence on stage, applauding his new political partner and humorously leaning in to nearly give him a kiss on the cheek.

Pence’s address would quiet Republican doubts about Trump. Unlike the celebrity businessman, Pence is an experienced politician, favorite of conservatives and ally of party leaders.

But Cruz’s appearance left the arena unsettled for the night’s closing speakers.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tried to quiet the anger as he took the stage, going off script to try to explain away the senator’s lack of support for the nominee.

“Ted Cruz said you can vote your conscience for anyone who will uphold the Constitution,” he said. “In this election there is only one candidate who will uphold the Constitution.”

Cruz told Trump in a phone conversation two days ago that he would not endorse him during his speech, according to Cruz aide Jason Johnson.

Still, Trump’s campaign invited Cruz to speak – in a headliner role, no less.

That decision was sure to spark a new round of second guessing about the campaign’s management of the convention and preparedness for a bruising general elec-

tion against Democrat Hillary Clinton.

In a late night tweet, Trump said he had seen Cruz’s speech two hours before he took the stage but let him speak anyway. “No big deal!” Trump wrote Clinton’s campaign, seeking to take advantage of the GOP divisions, echoed Cruz on Twitter, writing, “Vote your conscience” and linking to her website.

Trump did get a boost from Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, one of the 16 Republicans whose White House dreams were vanquished during the primary. Still, Walker suggested he was driven as much by a desire to keep Clinton out of the White House as admiration for his party’s nominee.

“Let me be clear: a vote for anyone other than Donald Trump in November is a vote for Hillary Clinton,” Walker said.

After two nights of mostly low-energy speeches, the crowd packed into the arena was noticeably more energetic Wednesday night, dancing in the aisles and waving signs reading, “America Deserves Better Than Hillary.”

‘Pokemon Go’ proves to be fun distraction In more ways than one, “Pokemon Go” is not like many smartphone apps.

Many apps keep users immobile while they stare at a screen a few inches in front of their faces.

And most apps don’t present potential physical dangers to their users.

Sure, “Pokemon Go,” which some reports claim has been downloaded more than 7.5 million times (and is on pace to surpass Twitter for number of users), is bringing users together outside of their houses.

But it has caused some problems.

It was reported July 14 that two men fell off a cliff in San Diego while chasing Pokemon, ignoring warning signs in the area.

People have been lured to remote areas with the promise of Pokemon and instead have been robbed, and distracted players have run into trees and lightposts, stepped off curbs and fallen off skateboards.

And in another misstep, the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Arlington, Virginia, and the Memorial and Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland are sites where “Pokemon Go” players have been active.

There definitely are downsides to playing “Pokemon Go,” but there also are positives.

While playing a game on a smartphone isn’t the same as playing a game of basketball or going for a swim, at least “Pokemon Go” users are moving around instead of sitting around playing the game.

That can’t be a bad thing.

Since the app launched, groups of people have been out and about, teaming up on their quests to capture Pokemon.

Anything that can bring people together and provide some fun, common ground between them is a plus.

It’s certainly been a fun phenomenon to watch, and it’s distracted us from the nasty presidential election, as well.

As long as app users keep aware of their surroundings and sacred, solemn and dangerous locations are kept out of the game, we say let the people have their Eevees and Zigzagoons, their Pikachus and Vileplumes.

Go capture some more Pokemon.

Obamacare loses a limb in Illinois The Affordable Care Act is again proving itself to be the Unaffordable Care Act now that Illinois has moved to close its health insurance co-op, Land of Lincoln Health, after it lost $90 million last year.

There were 24 state health insurance co-ops set up with $2.4 billion of your federal taxes to provide consumers with a “cheaper” alternative to the big insurance companies. Illinois just became the 16th to fail, and most of the remaining eight are struggling.

Land of Lincoln Health’s demise will leave 49,000 Illinois customers searching for a new health insurance provider, and you can bet it won’t be cheaper for anyone.

While you likely feel bad for those consumers and the $1,837 that taxpayers lost just last year on each of them, the real crisis is to come. Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama – notable that all three spent their formative political years as Chicago Democrats – are again leading the march to the “public option.”

The public option is where Medicare expands to do what the co-ops are failing to do. Government provides a plan for those too sick or poor to buy insurance, but like a black hole the gravity of the “free” government plan sucks in all the customers until private companies can’t compete and the govern-

ment winds up running all the health insurance.

In black holes, that total collapse is called the “singularity,” but in health insurance it is the “single payer.”

Government doesn’t worry about free market concerns such as premiums generating less than the health care costs because government just taxes and prints more money to remain solvent as it destroys the health insurance industry and exerts more price controls over the drug and other health care industries.

Co-ops are failing because you can’t get more out of a system than you put in. The costs will remain the costs, but if the liberals drive us to the single payer, those costs will be hidden within higher taxes or fewer dividends or fewer jobs – all of which builds to a crescendo as the Baby Boomers continue to age and continue to need more and more expensive health care.

We started Obamacare in 2010 with about 15 percent of the population lacking health insurance. Despite this massive government intrusion, there’s still about 11.7 percent of the nation without coverage.

The president wants more of your blood to keep it from flatlining.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru and the Trump campaign’s excuses for it and denials of it, have dominated coverage of the first stage of the Republican convention.

That can’t be what the Trump campaign wanted. But then it’s a little hard to know what it wanted.

Traditionally the role of a political party’s convention is to unify it and excite it for the campaign to come.

Campaign manager Paul Manafort chose, however, to attack the popular Republican governor of a must-win swing state on Day One. He went after John Kasich for not endorsing Trump, saying that Kasich had embarrassed his state – simultaneously drawing attention to and exacerbating the party’s disunity.

Party unity would also have been

served by a different approach to anti-Trump delegates, although this screw-up may have been the fault of the Republican National Committee more than the Trump campaign.

Those delegates were denied a rollcall vote on the convention’s rules, and the process by which they were denied it was not transparent.

The alternative would have been to allow a roll-call vote, which the anti-Trumpers would almost certainly have lost. Then some of the losers could be asked to tell reporters that they had been treated fairly but that most delegates were with Trump. Some of them would have played ball.

But instead of doing any of that, the Republicans appeared to be operating from a playbook Manafort got from his dictator clients.

A roll-call vote, it’s true, would have impinged on the convention’s schedule, maybe even going into prime time. It would have been no great loss.

Last night had only one and a half

good speeches. Rudy Giuliani, agree or disagree with his content, made an effective attack on Hillary Clinton. Mrs. Trump’s speech, although pedestrian, would have been counted as a success, too, if its banalities had not been borrowed.

This is a stunted convention. Many Republican politicians have found somewhere else to be. You might have thought that Trump could at least bring some celebrities to Cleveland; but in fact Mitt Romney’s convention outdid him for star power. (Scott Baio is no Clint Eastwood.)

The theme of the first day of the convention was supposed to be “making America safe again.” It turned out instead to be political incompetence.

‘Lock her up’ is the chant of a banana republic

It’s become a running theme at the Republican convention. From the podium and the delegates comes the refrain, “Lock her up!” The suggestion is that Hillary Clinton was not just wrong, negligent or dishonest, but should be imprisoned. In lieu of policy disagreements we now criminalize the opposing party’s nominee.

Some Republicans will argue that she should have been prosecuted for her handling of emails. But you know, she wasn’t. She’s been cleared of criminal wrongdoing. The verdict now will be a political one, decided at the ballot box. The zeal to not only beat but imprison one’s opponents has never been the basis for a national party’s presidential campaign. Until now.

When left-wing anti-war activists demanded that President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney be prosecuted for war crimes, the right screamed foul. How dare they take political differences and convert them into legal inquests. Now the right has apparently decided if you cannot beat the netroots, you might as well join them.

The Heritage Foundation’s Daily Signal wrote in September 2008: “For those who do not inhabit the fever swamps, it should be obvious that prosecuting on the basis of policy differ-

ence – circumventing the impeachment mechanism put into the Constitution for just this purpose – would cripple the operation of government. And not just Iraq or other things one party or the other may dislike, but everything – guns, butter, and all.”

When the special prosecutor went after Scooter Libby, the right uniformly denounced the move. National Review’s Kate O’Beirne declared, “We think he should be pardoned, Neal (Conan, host), because we think it’s a classic example – his prosecution, criminal prosecution – of criminalizing political disputes.”

Mark Steyn wrote in 2007, “Patrick Fitzgerald’s disgrace is the greater, and a huge victory not for justice or the law but for the criminalization of politics.”

Outside the Trump base, many Americans will find this criminalization lingo distasteful in the extreme.

And if they felt uncomfortable before Tuesday night, watching New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s show trial of Clinton might have pushed them over the edge.

During the campaign Christie liked to say he would “prosecute” the case against Clinton. He seemed at the time to be speaking metaphorically, promising to make a political case against her in the debates. But he apparently took the notion literally. Most of his speech was built around declaring her “guilty” of various missteps: “Well, tonight, as a former federal

prosecutor, I welcome the opportunity to hold her accountable for her performance and her character.

“We must present those facts to you, a jury of her peers, both in this hall and in living rooms around our nation. ...

“As to Hillary Clinton, putting herself ahead of America guilty or not guilty? Hillary Clinton, lying to the American people about her selfish, awful judgment guilty or not guilty?

Time after time the facts, and just the facts, lead you to the same verdict both around the world and at home.

“In Libya and Nigeria guilty.

“In China and Syria guilty.

“In Iran and Russia and Cuba guilty.”

That is not how we normally discuss our differences in America. We don’t talk in this country about criminalizing poor political judgment or flawed policy. That is what separates us – or has until now separated us – from Vladimir Putin’s Russia or Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela. Communist China conducts political show trials; not here.

The criminal prosecution rhetoric underscores the discomfort many feel with giving Trump – a peevish, resentful narcissist -- control over the Internal Revenue Service, the FBI, the NSA, the CIA and, of course, the military. Jamie Kirchick argues that the following scenario is not all that far-fetched: “Try to imagine, then, a situation in which Trump commanded our mili-

tary to do something stupid, illegal or irrational. Something so dangerous that it put the lives of Americans and the security of the country at stake.

(Trump’s former rival for the Republican presidential nomination, Marco Rubio, said the United States could not trust “the nuclear codes” to an “erratic individual.”) Faced with opposition from his military brass, Trump would perhaps reconsider and back down. But what if he didn’t?

“In that case, our military men and women, who swear to uphold the Constitution and a civilian chain of command, would be forced to choose between obeying the law and serving the wishes of someone who has explicitly expressed his utter lack of respect for it.”

A party calling to lock up its opponents. A presidential nominee speaking about ordering war crimes, “opening up” libel laws to punish critical journalists, and forcibly rounding up 11 million to 12 million people. This, folks, is the current Republican Party. If this is a permanent disposition rather than a temporary temper tantrum induced by an unhinged demagogue that will pass with Trump’s defeat, the GOP deserves extinction.

While Melania Trump was speaking, I tweeted that she was giving a perfectly serviceable speech about someone who did not bear much resemblance to her husband.

I was thinking of her description of him as a unifier governing in the best interests of all Americans, including Muslims, and her failure to tell a single story to illustrate his alleged virtues.

But it turns out that I was more correct than I realized: Part of Mrs. Trump’s speech was ripped off from one by Michelle Obama, and so the words she was using were originally written to describe Barack Obama.

Trump is campaigning less on a platform than on his own managerial excellence.

He will hire the best people and make the best deals, he tells us. Melania Trump’s prime-time plagiarism undermines that story. It is another sign that he is not running a minimally competent campaign.

Davis, Galauner making impact on travel team

ecarifio@shawmedia.com At first, A’Jah Davis was hesitant to play on a under-17 traveling basketball team, knowing she would be the youngest player on the court each day.

As her summer travel season is winding down with Illinois Hoop Dreams, those fears have been put aside – in part by her strong performances in the paint in national showcase tournaments.

“We played a team from Minnesota with a 6-foot, 4-inch post,” Hoop Dream coach Paul Collins said.

“A’Jah ate that kid alive. She destroyed her. It was probably one of her best efforts all season.”

Davis, a 6-1 post player who just finished her freshman year at DeKalb High, isn’t the only local player on the team. Julie Galauner, who started for Genoa-Kingston at point guard last year and is prepping for her senior year, plays shooting guard for Hoop Dreams as well.

The team was second in its pool at the Nike National Invitational at McCormick Place in Chicago earlier this month, and starts Friday in the Nike Championships in Atlanta. Davis’ performance came in a 43-33 win over the Minnesota Comets.

Davis said she likes the exposure playing in the high-profile tournaments brings and gives her experience against top-level competition on a national stage.

“I knew there would be girls taller than me so I needed to step up and do what I’m capable of – scoring around

the basket and getting teammates open looks if I get doubled down on,” Davis said. “I just have to play the game I’m capable of with my height.”

Collins said Davis already has drawn interest from Northern Illinois and Bradley, among others.

Davis said playing against older players had taken some getting used to.

“At first it was really scary playing 17U,” Davis said.

“But coach kept saying how I need to step up and play no matter who it is or where they’re ranked, and I need to play how I’m capable of playing. At first I was a nervous wreck going to play girls who are going to big colleges and I haven’t even been looked at yet.”

Galauner plays shooting guard for the team, which Collins said opens up her game a little more.

“She’s a 3-point shooting type of kid,” Collins said.

“Relieving her of her duties of being a ball handler, I think that works better. At Genoa she has to do everything but drive the team bus. For us, she’s one of a few really good guards here, and her strength is her ability to create 3-point shots.”

Galauner said she’s enjoying the time at shooting guard.

“For my high school team, I don’t get (to shoot a lot) because I’m at point guard and that’s basically the only place I play at,” Galauner said. “It’s a lot different and I like it cause I get to shoot more. It’s just a bit of variety thrown in. I don’t know if I like it better or not, but it’s fun.”

CHICAGO – Confidence has returned to the Cubs in the form of what manager Joe Maddon describes as a couple of slices of Meat Loaf.

Anthony Rizzo homered twice off Bartolo Colon, Kyle Hendricks pitched 61/3 scoreless innings and the Cubs beat the New York Mets, 6-2, Wednesday to take two of three in the rematch of last year’s NL Championship Series.

After entering the All-Star break on a 6-15 skid, the Cubs have taken four of six from AL West-leading Texas and the Mets, who swept them in last year’s NL Championship Series.

“A nice homestand. Four out of six ain’t bad,” Maddon said. “Eating Meat Loaf twice, I’ll take it.”

The offbeat Maddon calls winning series eating Meat Loaf, a reference to the singer’s 1977 hit, “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.” “We’ve played six really good games since the break, and that’s the part that has really stood out to me,” Maddon said.

A night after the first four-strikeout game of his big league career, Rizzo pulled a slider to right for a solo ho-

mer in the third, a drive that would have traveled 451 feet had it landed at ground level unimpeded, according to MLB’s Statcast program.

Two innings later with a runner on, he sent a fastball into the rightfield bleachers – estimated at 436 feet

by Statcast – for the 11th multihomer game of his career.

“If they go out just over the yellow line, it’s just as good,” Rizzo said. “But those definitely feel good. I just put good swings on the ball.”

Rizzo also hit a two-run homer in Monday’s victory as the Cubs rebounded from a four-game sweep in New York this month. The Cubs have won five of their past seven overall.

“It’s really nice,” Rizzo said. “It’s just what we want to do, keep winning series.”

Hendricks (9-6) gave up seven hits and hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last three appearances. He lowered his ERA to 2.27, third best in the majors behind Clayton Kershaw and Madison Bumgarner.

“It seems to go that way when things are kind of going in your favor, you get away with some bad pitches,” Hendricks said. “That was really the case today.”

The Associated Press SEATTLE – On the day Felix Hernandez returned to the mound, Leonys Martin gave the Seattle Mariners the biggest boost.

Martin hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot with one out in the 11th inning that sent Seattle over the White Sox, 6-5, on Wednesday.

“Every time you win a ballgame, it’s good no matter how you win the ballgame, but this is a great feeling,” Martin said.

Martin hit a two-run drive in the second inning. He then drove an 0-2 pitch from Dan Jennings (3-2) over the wall in right for his 13th homer. His previous season high was eight homers in 457 at-bats with Texas in 2013.

“With two strikes, especially in the second half, he’s taking some walks, he’s not swinging quite as hard,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “I believe the pitch he hit out was an 0-2 pitch. Not trying to kill it, just hit it, because he’s got a lot of ability.”

Hernandez, activated off the disabled list earlier in the day, allowed

five runs on 10 hits in 62/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two in his first start since May 27.

Todd Frazier hit a three-run homer in the first off Hernandez. Frazier’s 28th home run tied him for the major league lead with Baltimore’s Mark Trumbo.

Hernandez struck out Eaton to begin the game, but Melky Cabrera followed with a double into the left-field corner. Justin Morneau drew a twoout walk and Frazier connected for his third homer in three games.

The Sox added a run in the second on consecutive two-out singles by Tyler Saladino, Eaton and Cabrera to make it 4-0. Martin homered in the bottom half.

The Sox pushed the lead to 5-2 in the fifth on a leadoff triple by Cabrera and Morneau’s single.

Seattle cut the led to 5-4 in the seventh on the home run by Zunino, also called up earlier in the day from Triple-A Tacoma. It was the third homer for Zunino, who hit two during an earlier two-game call-up.

CHICAGO – The Bulls have signed guard Isaiah Canaan.

A three-year veteran, Canaan spent most of the past two seasons with Philadelphia. He averaged a career-high 11 points last season while shooting 36 percent from the field and just better than 36 percent from long range, hitting 176 of 485 3-pointers.

Canaan was one of 11 players in the NBA who made four or more 3s in at least 20 games.

LAKE FOREST – The Bears signed former Carolina Panthers guard Amini Silatolu.

The 6-foot-4, 320-pound Silatolu started 28 of the 34 games he appeared in over four seasons with the Panthers. Silatolu was mostly a backup last season and played in nine games before tearing the ACL in his left knee.

‘Star Trek Beyond’ boldly goes back to what made the TV show great

he opening words are kind of comforting: “My name is Captain James Tiberius Kirk.”

We fans of the 50-year-old juggernaut called “Star Trek” know the company we’re going to keep for the next couple of hours, and we have a good idea of what we’re in for. Here are two pieces of great news about “Star Trek Beyond”: No one is going to be disappointed by it, and the approach by producer J.J. Abrams (who directed the first two) and director Justin Lin hearkens back to the flavor and attitude of the original TV series.

It’s like a big screen, huge-budgeted episode of “Star Trek.”

Featuring a script co-written (with Doug Jung) by Simon Pegg, who again plays Scotty, the film starts off on a serious note, with Kirk (Chris Pine) stating his name as he’s trying to broker a treaty with an apparently fierce alien race, immediately erupts into raucous comedy, then calms down to

At the concert, Robinson will sing “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from “Toy Story,” “What a Wonderful World” and “Fly Me to the Moon.”

All of the music on the evening’s program was selected with the young listener in mind. Opening the program is the march from “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” The overture “La Gazza Ladra” is from Rossini’s 1817 opera, also known as “The Thieving Magpie.”

His operetta is based on a true story about a girl who is set to be executed for stealing a silver spoon when it turns out the real culprit was a bird.

The opera is rarely performed today, but its splendid overture is a concert favorite.

Victor Herbert’s “March of the Toys” is from the 1903 operetta “Babes in Toyland,” which weaves together various characters from Mother Goose nursery rhymes into a Christmas-themed musical extravaganza.

Music from animated films “The Incredibles” and “Frozen” will be joined by “Harry’s Wondrous World” and old favorites from classic Disney movies.

Everyone will be invited to whistle and sing with Edwin Franko Goldman’s “On the Mall.”

“The Children’s Marching Song” is based on the children’s counting tune “This Old Man,” which was published in “The Journal of English Folk Dance and Song Society” in 1937. English composer Malcolm Arnold scored the music for the 1953 film “The Inn of Sixth Happiness” and incorporated the song. Famed television personality Mitch Miller adapted the song from the film and created a hit record with his version.

Admission to the concert is free.

When a magical mishap leaves a million-dollar inheritance up for grabs, the next trick will be figuring out who the lucky winner is, and who will end up behind bars for malicious magical mayhem. This is an abracadabra disaster, and it’s up to you to find the murderer before they vanish into thin air. Spend the afternoon glimpsing through the smoke and mirrors to uncover which hocus pocus hitman offed the poor fellow, and stop them before this goes down as the most dangerous magic trick in history.

Gather information, trade clues with your guests, and solve the crime before the murderous magician gets away. Come dressed as a rival magician, a lovely assistant or even a detective to this afternoon of magical mystery.

The Egyptian Theatre will welcome prolific comedian Kathleen Madigan as she brings her new “The Mermaid Lady” standup tour to DeKalb at 8 p.m. Nov. 3.

Madigan is a regular panelist on Comedy Central’s “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore,” and she was nominated for a 2014 American Comedy Award for “Best Concert Comic.”

Besides, it also results in the terrific central idea of the film: The crew members, who generally spend a great deal of their screen time together on the bridge, are splintered off into separate groups down on that planet, trying hard to get back into one family unit so they can do battle with Krall.

It’s at this juncture that Pegg and Jung’s writing really shines.

The match-ups of the stranded crew members, all of which take into consideration the character traits that fans know well, lead to both serious and funny dialogue.

Yelchin), Sulu is with Uhura, etc. But the best pairing is that of Spock and McCoy (Karl Urban), two men who have always been portrayed as enjoyably opposite sides of a coin.

The film culminates in an attempt to use old technology to best futuristic equipment, some time spent in the gravitational slipstream and, of course, the expected mano-a-mano battle between Kirk and Krall. The heartfelt end credits include “In loving memory of Leonard Nimoy,” who died in February 2015, and “For Anton,” who died in June. For those who just need to know, J.J. Abrams has already announced plans for a still-unnamed “Star Trek 4.”

The DeKalb Municipal Band will present a special children’s concert with featured soloist Mark Robinson.

The concert, directed by Kirk Lundbeck, will take place at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, in the Dee Palmer Band Shell at Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

Robinson is Puerto Rican born, and has an eclectic musical background as vocalist and instrumentalist. His early singing included children’s church choir and Joliet High School concert and swing choirs, as well performing in local summer theater. Vocal studies with Linda Jaskoviak were influential in developing his vocal tone and concepts.

He prepared formally at Millikin University, the Military School of Music and Northern Illinois University, where he studied French horn with John Fairfield, and performed under Elwood Smith in madrigals and

concert choir. Robinson has received some coaching in orchestration and arranging from Jan Bach, NIU music professor.

Upon entering the U.S. Marine Corps in 1990, Robinson focused on French horn. Once deployed in the Marine band, he primarily played the horn, but also performed on saxMark ophone, and sang with Robinson the jazz band. In the Marine Corps Band he played and sang for a range of dignitaries, presidents and celebrities such as Bob Hope, Ginger Rogers, President Gerald Ford and Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf.

He has performed instrumentals and vocals in clubs throughout Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Colorado.

He has been principal horn in the DeKalb Municipal Band since 2006.

And in the fall of 2015, he won the final audition as principal horn with the

Wooden Box Theater marks 10th anniversary DAILY CHRONICLE

Wooden Box Theater will celebrate its 10th anniversary with “The Cavalcade of Stars,” an event that will showcase theatrical performers, fashion models, vendors and live music.

The event, which takes its name from the popular 1950s variety show starring Jackie Gleason, will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at the Ellwood House Visitor’s Center in DeKalb.

“Cavalcade” will be co-hosted by event writer Daniel Sherrill and hula-hoop performance artist Maddie Steen, who is making her debut with Wooden Box Theater and will perform hoop segments throughout the night.

There also will be special guest appearances by Holly Williams, Ariel Ryder, Francesca Soldana, Rachel Lyn and Lindsey Kwidzinski. Each will add their talent and creativity to the storyline and flow of the event.

Live music will be provided

by Unhalfbanding, Chris McNeil,

Jaysen Curran, Mitch Munns and Rachael Cozzola, Jay Rivi, Matt Lally, Jamie Simon, Mia Lynell, Christina Antonio and Katelyn Elizabeth.

Wooden Box Theater, as a performance and event writing team, began on stage during an edition of Open Mic at The House Cafe, then hosted by Ted Apollo, in July 2006, and has continued to evolve into an event-directing team and has toured St. Charles, Geneva, Chicago and Sycamore since.

The group is managed by Christina Antonio of DeKalb, who joined in 2014.

Along with live music and guest appearances, the show will feature a display and showcase by local Chloe & Isabel Jewelry representative Halie Hughes, in her debut with Wooden Box Theater.

The event was written by both Sherrill and Christina Antonio.

The Ellwood House Visitor’s Center is at 509 N. First St. in DeKalb.

Admission is $5 at the door. There is a semiformal dress code.

• Once addiction sets in, which might be very early in experimenting with an addictive substance, the emotional response when a person is deprived of the drug is usually extreme negative emotion, a reaction that is “hard-wired” in the brain.

• In a particular setting, the strong association of learned environmental cues (for instance, seeing the corner where a person’s dealer can be found or entering the doctor’s office for re-evaluation of chronic pain) intensifies the craving for the substance.

• What’s more, the brain releases a flood of intensely intoxicating brain chemicals, called neurotransmitters, during drug use.

This is called the “reward pathway.” This makes the brain relatively insensitive to “normal” sources of pleasure, such as a conversation with a good friend or a beautiful sunset. And it makes the brain focus all of its attention on obtaining the addicting substance.

This brain science is helping to shape treatment strategies. Medications such as methadone and buprenorphine can stabilize cravings. This gives the reasoning part of the brain a chance to get back in shape and kick in. Once cravings are under control, a person may be able to develop alternative sources of joy and reward to avoid the cues that set off cravings.

Dear Dr. K: My brother has struggled with addiction for years. I’ve told my husband addiction is a disease, but he claims my brother is weak and lacks willpower. Is he right?

Dear Reader: There is a lot of stigma and shame associated with addiction. But the truth is, people with substance-use disorders aren’t simply weak or immoral.

It surely is true people who try out illegal addictive drugs for recreational purposes are breaking the law. In my opinion, they also are doing something profoundly stupid. But they’re often teens, who tend to do a lot of stupid, impulsive things. Moreover, many people who become addicted to legal drugs were started on those drugs by their doctors.

The most important point is addiction has a biological basis. Addiction impairs the brain in many important ways. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Michael Bierer, an internist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, about this topic. We discussed a recent review article in The New England Journal of Medicine about the “brain science” of addiction and its management.

Here are some of the highlights: • An addicted person’s impaired ability to stop using drugs or alcohol has to do with deficits in the function of the prefrontal cortex. This is the part of the brain responsible for self-monitoring, delaying reward and integrating messages from the intellect (reason) and libido (pleasure center).

• The prefrontal cortex is not fully developed in adolescents and is particularly vulnerable during this time. The earlier the brain is exposed to a drug, the greater the potential for damage. Adolescence is a time when caution and intervention may prove most valuable, but it’s also the time

When the deal was played, West led a diamond against four hearts.

South ruffed, played a heart to dummy’s queen (yes!), led a club to his queen (yes again!), played a spade to dummy’s king, took another club finesse, drew a second round of trumps with dummy’s ace, and started to run the spades. Declarer had no trouble taking 12 tricks, losing only to East’s heart jack.
