Police reports – a check against disappearing people

“Why’s my name in the police blotter?

This is ruining my life!”

“You shouldn’t write anything about someone who’s accused of crimes until there’s a verdict. It’s unfair to them. Let the courts decide!”

I’ve heard complaints like these, and many other variants, countless times in my life as an editor. Some people are so desperate not to have their arrest known, they will even offer cash if we’ll withhold their name.

I never accept, as my career is worth more to me than any bribe. But this is Illinois, so I don’t get too upset. People are used to asking, “Who do I see?” to fix problems.

But why do we print the police arrest reports and write about court proceedings so often? Why is it important that there be stories and photos to document those proceedings?

For one, it’s important for the public to know about crimes that are occurring or have occurred in their community, so that if they have information, they can help the police take the bad guys off the street, or they can take appropriate measures to protect themselves.

People also like to read about crime whether it affects them or not, so yes, our coverage does satisfy public curiosity.

There’s a greater purpose, too: If no one publicized arrest reports and court proceedings, we could end up with a society where the government simply makes people disappear.

Such as the one that you and I, and all American taxpayers, pay to support in Egypt.

Human rights advocacy group Amnesty International said the Egyptian government, led by General-turned-President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi, is “disappearing” three to four of its citizens a day.

Detainees can be held for days or months.

They often are kept handcuffed and blindfolded, and often tortured into making “confessions,” Amnesty International said. Torture methods reportedly have included electrical shock, beatings and other methods that you would consider repugnant.

While the detainees are being held, the Egyptian government often denies they are in custody, Amnesty International reports.

They get no lawyer, no day in court. Some eventually are released. Others are charged.

The people being “disappeared” by and large are supporters of Mohammad Morsi, the Islamist former president.

We, the American taxpayers, support these disappearances and torture. President Barack Obama’s administration has allocated $1.3 billion in military aid and $150 million in economic aid for Egypt this fiscal year.

I’ll bet you that the hundreds of Egyptians who disappeared this year would love to have had their names in the police reports of their local newspaper. While they were handcuffed and hanging by their wrists while the secret police tortured them with electric shocks, I’ll bet they longed for a public trial, one where charges against them could be publicly known, tested, and a verdict reached.

We’ll continue to do our part to make sure that tax money is never spent to enable what goes on in Egypt to happen here. That begins with printing the police reports and showing up at court hearings.

Officials warn of rising temperatures later this week

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Locals are advised to stay indoors or cool off with a dip in the public pool later this week, with heat indexes expected to surpass 100 degrees Thursday and Friday.

The highest mid-July temperatures in the past three years could be on their way, and require preparation, National Weather Service meteorologist Ricky Castro said. A large ridge of high-pressure air over the southern plains is expected to strengthen and expand north and east this week, bringing warm air with it to DeKalb County.

“The last time we reached the mid-90s in July was 2013,” Castro said.

Temperatures locally are expected to reach into the mid-90s, and could top 100 degrees, later this week, John Feerick, AccuWeather.com senior meteorologist, said.

“It’ll probably stay above normal through the end of the month, but after Thursday-Friday-Saturday, we’ll see a little bump down in the temperatures across the region,” Feerick said.

For those with pre-existing plans to spend time outside, shade and hydration could mean the difference between feeling warm and suffering heat sickness, DeKalb football coach Matt Weckler said. The team will play a 7-on-7 tournament Thursday at St. Charles, but not without plenty of water and frequent breaks.

“We make available as much water as we possibly can,” Weckler said. “The biggest part is when we’re not participating, staying out of the sun and probably limiting a lot of the reps of our guys.”

The same goes for those on the sidelines or out at the park. As the heat wave approaches, officials are urging people to take precautions.

Public buildings, especially libraries, and also municipal buildings and other spaces often are available as cooling centers. Even a couple of hours a day in an air-conditioned environment can be enough to stave off heat-related problems, officials said.

hours a day for those who need to cool off, as is the DeKalb Oasis on Interstate 88.

DeKalb Fire Chief Eric Hicks said whenever summer temps spike, his department is likely to field at least a few calls.

“Our biggest thing will be heat-related injuries the heat cramps, heat stroke, heat exhaustion,” Hicks said.

“We will run into a few cases like that.”

Hot weather can be deadly.

Data from the National Weather Service show that nationally, extreme heat caused 113 deaths on average each year from 2006 to 2015, more than tornadoes (110) or floods (84) during the same period.

Although some people are conditioned for working in sweltering conditions, others might underestimate what can happen if they overexert themselves when it’s hot out.

“Some people are trained for it,” Hicks said. “The outside construction worker knows what he’s getting into, but you always have the occasional athlete who doesn’t bring enough water, and then they have a problem.”

But even those who want to be outside most on a hot summer day might have to take shelter from the sun, DeKalb Park District Superintendent of Recreation Bill Ryder said. This week’s summer camp activities could be rearranged to take place indoors or in the water at Hopkins Pool, he said.

“We do make adjustments when it gets too hot to keep them inside as much as possible,” Ryder said. “We have lunches and snacks for them.

We’re fortunate again that our facility is air-conditioned.”

Rey’s council vote raises eyebrows

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Grumbles rippled through a recent DeKalb City Council meeting after the mayor cast a vote that led to a measure failing, calling his actions into question.

Aldermen had a lengthy discussion about a potential buyer’s request for a special-use permit to establish the property at 302 S. Third St., in DeKalb, as a two-family unit instead of its current single-family designation.

After all of the aldermen voted on the request, the decision was 4-3 in favor pushing the request on to second reading. Then Mayor John Rey cast his “no” vote creating a tie, which meant the measure failed, City Attorney Dean Frieders said.

“When a majority of aldermen

vote in favor of any proposition, the mayor shall vote. That’s what state statute reads and that’s what city code reflects,” Frieders said.

Aldermen weren’t the only naysayers regarding the request. Three residents from the block addressed the council, imploring the city leaders to reject the request. Also, members of the city’s Planning John Rey and Zoning CommisDeKalb mayor sion had previously recommended that the request not be granted, citing that it would set a unwanted precedent.

The home, one of eight on the block located between Prospect and Franklin streets, has obviously been used as a duplex. Currently, it has two front entryways and back doors,

two electric and gas utility meters, but only one water line.

Judith Slauver, one of four in her family who owns the property, said the owners have rented it for the past 47 years but are now trying to sell it because the family is “downsizing” the number of properties it owns, because of health issues.

She said one of the units has not had a resident is five or six years.

Aldermen who favored granting the permit said the property has historically been used as a duplex. 1st Ward Alderman David Jacobson, added that denying the request could kill the sale.

Those who opposed it didn’t want to give a pass to landowners who may be shirking the zoning law, even if unintentionally. They were poised to side with 4th Ward Alderman Bob Snow, in whose ward the house is lo-

cated, as one alderman said things usually go.

“We always went to the alderman of the ward, who is the go-to person. ... Usually the council goes along with the alderman of that ward,” said Baker, who joined Snow in voting against the request. “He has the ear of residents.”

But Rey didn’t favor the request and voted against it.

Since he tied the vote, “I’ll declare the motion defeated,” Rey said.

Rey’s voting has drawn criticism in the past. In 2015, the mayor said he would vote less often after some residents questioned the practice.

In 2012, City Council members voted unanimously to have the mayor vote on all matters before the council. The change was made under Mayor Kris Povlsen, who later decided against running for another term.

Sycamore OKs contracts to finish street work, repair Bethany Road

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore City Council approved bids for two road work projects Monday, including permanent repairs to damage caused by heat buckling on Bethany Road last month.

Council members on Monday unanimously voted in favor of awarding Elliott and Wood Inc., of DeKalb, a $27,000 contract to repair Bethany Road. The winning bid was the cheapest of three submitted to the city, City Manager Brian Gregory said.

Work could be completed as early as mid-August.

The repairs will be made as soon as possible, and without entirely shutting down Bethany Road, Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said.

“What will go along with that repair, however, will be some preventative features like reinforcement and so forth,” Mundy said. “And like the manager said, the hotter the weather the better it is to put the rod in and

reinforce that and pour the patch.”

Council members Monday also unanimously awarded a $33,250 contract to Behm Pavement Maintenance, of Crystal Lake, to fill road cracks and complete this year’s Street Maintenance Program tasks. This year will be the earliest the city has finished road improvements since establishing its Street Maintenance Program in 2008, city documents show.

“Here we are and no later than the middle of August we should be done with the repairs to the streets, the parking lot, and the crack filling. We got on this very early,” Mundy said.

Since 2014, the program has allocated $50,000 for crack-filling to preserve the street’s surface.

Mary helped organize and was a member of the 4-C board of directors (Community Coordinated Child Care), chaired Sycamore Music Boosters and organized the annual Flea Market fundraiser, worked with Opportunity House clients (disabled adults) and was on its board of directors, chairwoman of the board for implementing and guiding the organization of Sycamore Child Care, gave private clarinet lessons, and played in the DeKalb Municipal Summer Band. She was very involved with the Sycamore United Methodist Church, where she cared for infants in the nursery, choir member, served various offices with United Methodist Women, including two four-year terms as president, member of the faith in the future committee making plans for construction of a new church building, member of the building committee for the new church, member of the finance committee, member and chairwoman of missions committee, and represented her church on a Mission Study Tour to Zimbabwe

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Judy; his beloved children Michael (Renee) Scheffers, and Sara (Cesar) Martinez of DeKalb, and Matthew (Julie) Carpenter, of Sycamore.

He treasured the time he spent with his five grandchildren; Hailey and Andrew Scheffers, and Cesar Jr., Cruz, and Ava Martinez. He was eagerly awaiting the birth of his sixth grandchild, due in September to Matt and Julie. Mike is also survived by brothers Craig (Gretchen) Carpenter of Oregon, and Steven (Susan) Carpenter of York, Maine.

Man acquitted of DUI charge but found guilty of driving with revoked license

“His long history of alcohol abuse is a problem and a danger to the public,” Thompson told the judge Monday.

Although Barth wasn’t found guilty of driving under the influence in this case, Thompson noted that he told a Sycamore police officer that he had been drinking when he was arrested in 2015.

A Sycamore police officer arrested Barth on March 24, 2015, after he saw the truck he was in hit the fog line after a trip through the drive-thru at McDonald’s. The officer watched as Barth drove behind the closed Charter Fitness facility at 720 Foxpointe Drive. The officer found Barth, who appeared intoxicated, lying across the driver seat in an apparent attempt to hide, according to court documents. Barth refused to take field sobriety test and, later at the police department, refused all chemical tests, according to court records.

Barth’s attorney, Brian Erwin, argued that sentencing his client to prison wouldn’t help him or society.

Erwin said Barth needed to address his alcohol problems in treatment, not behind bars.

“Sentencing him to the Department of Corrections for three years isn’t going to help,” Erwin said. “The only way to address this is to make him get treatment.”

Montgomery sentenced Barth to 180 days of jail with work release, 24 months of probation and ordered him to get an alcohol treatment evaluation. Barth will also be required to pay fines and court costs.

“You really need to address this alcohol issue,” the judge said. “Take advantage of this opportunity.”

Thompson declined to comment further after the hearing.

Erwin said he thought the sentence was fair “and appropriate to help Mr. Barth get the treatment he needs.”

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb County judge sentenced a South Elgin man twice convicted of drunken-driving offenses, including a 2010 crash that injured a Hampshire couple, to 180 days in jail for driving with a revoked license after prosecutors failed to prove he was drunk at the time.

Eric M. Barth, 26, of the 1300 block of Sandhurst Lane, South Elgin, was convicted of aggravated driving while license revoked earlier this year. He had initially been charged with aggravated driving under the influence, aggravated driving under with a suspended or revoked license, driving with a suspended or revoked license and driving on a suspended license after a 2015 traffic stop in Sycamore.

After a bench trial in March and April, Judge Philip Montgomery acquitted Barth of the drunken-driving

charges after finding prosecutors failed to prove their case.

However, Montgomery found Barth guilty of aggravated driving with a revoked license.

At a sentencing hearing Monday, Assistant State’s Attorney Carrie Thompson asked the judge to sentence Barth to three years in prison.

She went over his past convictions, including a five-year sentence for a 2010 DUI crash that injured an elderEric M. ly Hampshire couple, Barth according to media reports. Barth qualified for boot camp for nonviolent offenders in that case and avoided prison.

He later pleaded guilty to a 2012 driving under the influence charge and was sentenced to 21/2 years in prison in that case, according to media reports.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – A Sandwich woman faces a misdemeanor drug charge after she apparently overdosed in a bathroom at Kishwaukee Hospital while visiting her boyfriend early Monday.

Ashley M. Mohr, 26, of the 100 block of Gletty Road, Sandwich, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Hospital staff found Mohr unconscious in a hospital bathroom with a hypodermic needle in her arm about 1 a.m., DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said. Police suspect Mohr had injected herself with heroin, Sullivan said.

Deputies didn’t need to use naloxone, an emergency treatment to counteract opioid overdoses, because Mohr was already at the hospital. Had the apparent overdose happened somewhere else, the outcome could have been

different, Sullivan said.

Mohr had a metal spoon that police said was used to prepare heroin at the time of her arrest, according to court documents.

Mohr was treated at the hospital before being taken to the DeKalb County Jail, where she was booked about 4 a.m.

Judge Philip Montgomery ordered Mohr to be released Monday afternoon on a $3,000 recognizance bond.

She is next due in court Aug. 16.

The Associated Press TAYLORVILLE – Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation Monday to punish Illinois retailers that sell socalled bath salts, which are chemicals that mimic the effects of cocaine and other powerful drugs.

“We’ve got to do everything we can to end the scourge of drug addiction,” Rauner said before signing the bill in Taylorville, about 25 miles southeast of Springfield.

Rauner called bath salts “very dangerous” chemicals that are causing problems in Illinois’ rural communities.

Illinois and every other state already prohibit the sale of bath salts.

However, the new state law allows prosecutors to go after convenience stores and gas stations that knowingly sell the synthetic drugs, which often are disguised as everyday products.

CHICAGO – McDonald’s and Starbucks are implementing filtering technology that blocks customers using Wi-Fi from accessing pornography sites.

The move follows a campaign from anti-pornography groups Enough is Enough and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation to demand the chains filter out pornography.

Oak Brook, Illinois-based McDonald’s said in a statement that Wi-Fi filtering has been activated in the majority of its nearly 14,000 restaurants nationwide.

Illinois treasurer to auction unclaimed items at state fair

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Treasurer’s Office plans to auction unclaimed property at this year’s Illinois State Fair.

Some items are rare and interesting. The office said it will have a rookie card of late Chicago Cubs star Ernie Banks, an 1856 flying eagle cent and an Elvis Presley concert stub.

There also will be a Cartier watch and a pair of new 1997 Air Jordan shoes.

Police investigating after 12-year-old Rockford girl shot

ROCKFORD – Officials in Rockford said a 12-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot multiple times.

The Rockford Register Star reported that the girl was hospitalized Monday morning after the Sunday afternoon shooting.

Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said officers are looking for occupants of a dark-colored sport coupe.

The vehicle was seen at about 3 p.m. Sunday chasing, and its occupants opening fire on, another vehicle. Police said

as many as five people were in the vehicle being chased.

The girl’s gunshot wounds are considered life-threatening. She was not immediately identified.

Bomb-sniffing dog found day after it went missing

ALSIP – A dog used to sniff out bombs for the Amtrak Police Department has been found after going missing this weekend.

The Amtrak Police Department said “Hako” was found Sunday, a day after it went missing from its handler’s home in the Chicago suburb of Alsip.

Police in neighboring Crestwood announced that the dog had been found, but neither the department nor Amtrak had any details.

The brown sable German shepherd belongs to the Transportation Security Administration and is assigned to the Amtrak Police Department.

Amazon to open 1st pickup location in state at U of Illinois

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois is partnering with Amazon to make the school’s Illini Union Bookstore the first pickup location in the state.

The News-Gazette reported that the Amazon@Illinois location is scheduled to open by the end of October. Amazon customers will be able to have their purchases delivered to the store instead of shipped to their residences. Same-day pickup will be available for some customers on certain items.

Amazon is building its own space in the union. It will pay rent and have its own employees.

Illinois Union Bookstore Director Tod Petrie said it’s a “win-win” for students. He said the school “has to evolve with the students.”

Purdue University is the only other Big Ten school to offer the service.

In 10 turbulent days, 10 law enforcement officers have been killed by attackers – at a protest march in Dallas, a courthouse in Michigan and now a convenience store in Baton Rouge.

Together, the shootings represent the deadliest attack on law enforcement in decades.

The officers who died Sunday all lived just outside Denham Springs, Louisiana, a quiet bedroom community across the Amite River from Baton Rouge, which has been in turmoil for two weeks. Tensions rose sharply after the death of a black man killed by white Baton Rouge officers after a scuffle at a convenience store.

PARIS – Authorities investigating the truck driver who killed 84 people in a Bastille Day attack painted a complex picture Monday of a man who did not seem devout but had recently become interested in jihadi violence and researched past attacks in France and the United States, including one on a gay nightclub in Orlando.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins, who oversees terrorism investigations, said that by all accounts, Mohamed Lahouaiyej Bouhlel drank, ate pork and had an “unbridled sex life.” But his computer and phone showed online searches relating to IS and other jihadi groups.

Molins said Bouhlel recently had grown a beard and told people it was for religious reasons.

Officials have said the attack obviously was premeditated, but they have not found evidence that Bouhlel had coordinated with an extremist network.

CLEVELAND – After a harsh primary, Donald Trump’s general election campaign officially opened with a warm and personal validation from his wife, Melania Trump, who kicked off the Republican convention by assuring voters that the brash candidate has the character and determination to unite a divided nation.

“If you want someone to fight for you and your country, I can assure you, he is the guy,” Mrs. Trump told delegates in her highest-profile appearance of the presidential campaign.

Her husband made a brief, but showy entrance, into the convention hall to introduce her, emerging from shadows and declaring to cheers, “We’re going to win, we’re going to win so big.” He returned to the stage after his wife’s remarks, greeting her warmly with a kiss and cheering her on along with the crowd.

Mrs. Trump’s appearance was a sharp contrast to most of the night’s other speakers, who painted a bleak picture of an American future that they said only her husband can correct.

Republican orthodoxy in his unexpected political rise, creating a crisis within the GOP about its future.

Republican divisions erupted briefly on the convention floor Monday afternoon after party officials adopted rules by a shouted voice vote. Anti-Trump forces seeking to derail his nomination responded with loud and angry chants, although they quickly were quieted, and there were no lingering signs of the protests as delegates returned to the cavernous convention hall for the evening program.

Trump hoped the chaos would be little more than a footnote. Despite persistent party divisions, his campaign is confident Republicans will come together behind their shared disdain for Clinton.

Republicans also highlighted at length the deadly 2012 attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, while Clinton was serving as secretary of state. The mother of one of the victims choked back tears as she personally blamed Clinton for her son’s death and accused her of giving a false explanation for the attack.

“If Hilary Clinton can’t give us the truth, why should we give her the presidency?” Pat Smith said.

The convention comes amid a wrenching period of violence and unrest, both in the United States and around the world. In a matter of weeks, Americans have seen deadly police shootings, a shocking ambush of police in Texas and escalating racial tensions, not to mention a failed coup in Turkey and gruesome Bastille Day attack in Nice, France. Three police officers were killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on the eve of the convention’s opening day.

Convention speakers relentlessly cast the troubling times as a result of ineffective leadership by President Barack Obama and Clinton, who spent four years in his administration.

He peddled self-published books with abstract themes about self-empowerment and spiritual enlightenment, but also posted rambling internet videos calling for violent action in response to what he considered oppression.

In the last message sent from his Twitter account early Sunday, he wrote: “Just bc you wake up every morning doesn’t mean that you’re living. And just bc you shed your physical body doesn’t mean that you’re dead.”

Nine hours later, he ambushed law enforcement officers in Baton Rouge, fatally shooting two police officers and a sheriff’s deputy and injuring three others before being shot dead himself. It was his 29th law said. “And it all needs to stop, everything. We all need peace.”

Three other officers were wounded.

One of them, Deputy Nicholas Tullier, remained in critical condition Monday.

The gunman was killed at the scene.

Poe watched from the window Sunday morning as a line of police cars pulled up in front of Gerald’s house.

She woke up her husband, a former city police officer.

“He said, ‘What’s wrong?’ and I said, ‘There’s units everywhere, and you’ve told me that’s never a good sign,’ ” she

The black military veteran, whose last known address was in Kansas City, Missouri, had spent five years in the Marine Corps, serving one tour in Iraq before being honorably discharged and taking a series of college classes. Gerald was a Marine from 1994 to 1998. He later joined the Army and served as a decorated soldier from 2002 to 2009, including three tours in Iraq.

Less than a year ago, he joined the Baton Rouge Police Department.

He had a wife and two daughters, Poe said, and was devoted to them.

DENHAM SPRINGS, La. – Fresh out of the police academy, Matthew Gerald was so proud to bring his cruiser home that he stood in the driveway, wiping it down under the hot Louisiana sun.

His neighbor, Ashley Poe, watched as he flicked the blue lights on and off, on and off.

Poe and her husband shared a laugh.

The 41-year-old former soldier and Marine looked like an excited kid.

“It’s like living out the dream,” she said.

Gerald got to live it only for a few months. He was one of three officers gunned down in an ambush Sunday in Baton Rouge, traumatizing a nation already on edge.

In the span of 10 turbulent days, 10 law enforcement officers have been killed by attackers – at a protest march in Dallas, a courthouse in Michigan and now a convenience store in Baton Rouge. Together, the shootings represent the deadliest attack on law enforcement in decades.

The officers who died Sunday all lived just outside Denham Springs, a quiet bedroom community across the Amite River from Baton Rouge, which has been in turmoil for two weeks. Tensions rose sharply after the death of Alton Sterling, a black man killed by white Baton Rouge officers after a scuffle at a convenience store. The killing was captured on cellphone video.

As the nation debates race and policing, this community is mourning three of its sons – all husbands and fathers described by friends as being committed to protecting and serving the public.

“You hear about these things happening across the country to officers just trying to defend us, but this brings it right here, to our home,” Livingston Parish President Layton Ricks said.

“These are our families. These are good men. They’re the only line of defense between good and evil. We say we don’t want to let this evil affect how we live our daily lives. But it does.”

Gavin Long, a former Marine from Missouri dressed in black and carrying extra ammunition, opened fire on officers around 8:45 a.m. Sunday, police said.

The gunfire also killed 45-year-old Brad Garafola, an East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputy and a father of four; and 32-year-old Montrell Jackson, a 10-year veteran of the Baton Rouge Police Department with a newborn baby at home.

Garafola and Gerald were white.

Jackson was black, as was the gunman.

“The world is crazy right now. It is complete chaos,” Jackson’s sister-in-

“He’d tell him how he was proud to protect his country,” she said. “It seemed like that was his passion to do that.”

Denham Springs, population 10,000, is the sort of town where everyone is connected, Mayor Gerard Landry said.

There’s a palpable sense of anger and despair.

“There’s no way to describe what it does to a small city like this,” Marilyn Wallace said Monday, standing behind the counter of the store she and her husband, Randy, own on a two-blocklong stretch of antiques shops in the historic district of Denham Springs.

The city is in Livingston Parish, about 13 miles from Baton Rouge, with a history of racial tension. But that history – and the racial divide in nearby Baton Rouge – seem remote here.

Jackson’s father-in-law, Lonnie Jordan, called him a “gentle giant” – tall and stout and formidable looking, but with a peaceful disposition.

Jordan said his son-in-law had been working long hours since Sterling was killed.

Jackson posted on Facebook that he was physically and emotionally tired.

He wrote that while in uniform he gets nasty looks and out of uniform some consider him a threat.

“I swear to God I love this city,” he wrote, “but I wonder if this city loves me.”

The police chief described at a news conference how he had gone to the district where Jackson worked just days earlier in an attempt to boost the spirits of the officers. Instead, Jackson ended up giving him the pep talk.

He had been on the force 10 years and risen to the rank of corporal, said Kedrick Pitts, his half brother. He worked hard, sometimes seven days a week.

He was funny and good-natured, Pitts said. He collected shoes, 500 pairs, including special Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan lines.

But what he loved most was his wife and 4-month-old son.

“He’s going to grow up without a father,” said Jackson’s sister-in-law, Lauren Rose. “But we’ll be there to give him memories and let him know how his dad was a great man, and how he died with honor. ... Hopefully one day, he’ll be like his dad.”

At the convenience store Sunday, Garafola tried to intervene and help the fallen officers.

Surveillance video showed Garafola firing at the gunman from behind a dumpster as bullets hit the concrete around him, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Sid Getreaux said.

“My deputy went down fighting. He returned fire to the very end,” the sheriff said.

grown each year, developing from just one employee when Ed Kuhn founded the shop, to the store’s current two part-time and two full-time workers.

Although business has remained steady in recent years, the company was forced to endure the financial stresses brought on by the recession from 2007 through 2009, Ed Kuhn said.

“That period was a trying time, but we were able to weather the storm and continue to be profitable through that also,” he said.

Ultimately, it was the company’s versatility and the personability of its employees that allowed it to last.

“We just try to keep people happy or try to give them a good product for a good price, and that seems to work as a philosophy,” he said.

Even after 30 years, the longstanding Sycamore business isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, Ed Kuhn said. “[Closing] is not in our sights at this point,” he said. “We enjoy Sycamore.

We think it’s a great place to live and work, and we have no reason at this point to do anything different.”

Needing a respite from angry rhetoric

Too many times this year, we have recoiled in disgust as irresponsible rhetoric was put into practice.

Donald Trump, who will become the Republican nominee for president when the party convention concludes Thursday in Cleveland, has commented at one of his rallies in February about wanting to punch a protester in the face.

Yet many recoiled at the scenes that unfolded at later rallies, of Trump supporters and protesters actually attacking one another, inside arenas and on the streets.

Recent video of scenes where black men shot to death by police in encounters in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Falcon Heights, Minnesota, led to widespread public anger and a new wave of protests and pronouncements.

At their best, people raised their voices to demand an end to racial bias in the criminal justice system, starting with interactions with police on the street.

One need not entirely agree with those who march under the broad slogan “Black lives matter” to acknowledge that black people in America are incarcerated at numbers far disproportionate to their share of the population. Likewise, only a naif would argue that racism and racial bias no longer exist in our country.

In some cases, though, the rhetoric of protesters and the aggrieved called out police everywhere as racist oppressors, with some openly calling for violence against police.

In the past two weeks we have seen two black military veterans put these words into practice to horrifying result.

Eight police officers have been killed in two separate attacks in as many weeks. Perversely, the attacks are on the very people who we teach our children they should trust to keep them safe. They are here to help.

We support the police in our communities and around our country for the work they do in our communities. There is no justification for these terrorist attacks.

But the weeks ahead seem likely to turn up the heat on our rhetoric.

At their national convention in Cleveland this week, Republicans are expected to attack Democrat Hillary Clinton as a liar, an enabler, and quite possibly worse as they nominate Donald Trump for president.

When they meet next week in Philadelphia to nominate Clinton, Democrats no doubt will preach that a Donald Trump presidency would be a debacle for America and a danger to the free world.

Meanwhile, outside, people of varying points of view likely will be shouting in the streets.

This is American democracy, where ideas and individuals often are tested through strong disagreement.

But we must keep things in perspective, and avoid dehumanizing speech that enables and even encourages violence against those we see as our opponents.

This year, it already has gone too far.

Trump’s promise to run country as he did his business

Donald Trump promises to run the country the way he has run his businesses. Recent reporting on Trump’s financial dealings makes that promise sound more like a threat.

Trump refuses to release much of the documentation that would shed light on the business background he says qualifies him to lead the nation – including, most glaringly, his tax returns. So it has been up to members of the media to piece together the puzzle of the candidate’s business record. Post reporter Drew Harwell and the New York Times’ Russ Buettner and Charles Bagli are the latest to shine some light on that record.

The emerging picture is an ugly one. In Atlantic City, Trump’s casinos failed even when the rest of the town continued to thrive. Along the way, Trump used company money to pay off personally guaranteed loans, and – after the 1995 creation of the public company Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts – publicly traded funds to bail out privately held casinos. The company has filed for bankruptcy five times.

Trump is running for president on the platform that he is an extraordinary executive.

Because most of his business empire is privately held, the public must look to Trump Casinos and Resorts to evaluate these claims to competency.

So far, they seem about as solid as Trump’s

reputation as a borrower. Additional characterizations of Trump as an imperial CEO – ignoring and even firing advisers who disagreed with him – deflate arguments such as that of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, who said that Trump would defer to his “White House counsel,” or to other members of his staff and Cabinet.

More troubling than his company’s failure is the fact that Trump did not fail with it – while his shareholders did. Trump Casinos and Resorts lost money for its shareholders every year Trump was in charge. Meanwhile, The Post reported, Trump received more than $44 million in compensation.

In the past, Trump has defended defaulting on his debt by denouncing Wall Street: Banks, according to Trump, are “total killers.” But what about his casino’s many mom-and-pop investors who watched their holdings go down the drain while Trump used company funds to fly across the country by private jet and entertain high-profile guests on his golf courses?

“I make great deals for myself,” Trump said about his Atlantic City casinos in a recent Post interview. These revelations force us to wonder once again what kind of deals he would make for the country.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Michael Barone Trump is being advised that he must raise millions for TV ads and for building an organization to turn out his vote, and he has made some moves in that direction. But he got where he is by the political version of OPM – Other People’s Media. Something like $2 billion worth of free airtime – more than all the Republican candidates put together – spiced up with an on-and-off feud with Roger Ailes’ Fox News Channel.

Hillary Clinton is also reluctant to spend the millions she’s made in half-hour speeches to Wall Street firms. She’s doing it the old way: lots of fundraising, lots of TV ads, utilizing the brilliant organizational tactics developed by the two Obama campaigns. It’s a formula that has proved its worth since the 28-year-old Ailes put together TV ads for Richard Nixon’s campaign in 1968.

In those days TV viewers had the choice of three ideologically similar networks and couldn’t avoid omnipresent campaign ads. Now they can choose their own congenial media outlets and, with the help of TiVo, fast-forward

through ads they don’t want to see.

But the ratings seem to indicate that lots of voters want to see lots of Donald Trump. So maybe he can win the presidency as he won the nomination – through Other People’s Media.

One of the unusual things about this campaign is that both parties’ nominees won thanks to large margins among their parties’ most downscale constituencies. Hillary Clinton won big margins among blacks, especially in the South.

Donald Trump inevitably ran strongest among non-college whites, especially those with low degrees of social connectedness.

Americans tend to sympathize with the disadvantaged and are often ready to pay special respect to their views. After all, the most discriminated-against Americans, Southern black churchgoers, led the nation through the civil-rights movement to renounce the vicious system of legally enforced racial segregation – one of the great triumphs of our history. We honor them appropriately each year with the Martin Luther King holiday every year.

So it’s an unfortunate fact that the candidates whom both parties’ downscale constituencies effectively chose are distrusted and disliked by solid majorities of general election voters. It’s likely that many alternative Republican

nominees would easily beat Clinton and that many alternative Democratic nominees would easily beat Trump.

I suspect that many voters would love to see Clinton lose but hate to see Trump win, and that many would love to see Trump lose but hate to see Clinton win. The likelihood that many voters are cross-pressured makes the outcome harder than usual to predict.

Polls reflect this. At this point in the last several election cycles, fewer than 10 percent of respondents picked neither major-party candidate. Currently, 17 percent are picking neither presumptive nominee in two-way pairings, and when Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Jill Stein are added to the mix, that number jumps to 23 percent. That’s extraordinary in – or after – a long period of strong and polarized partisan attachment.

Right now polls indicate there isn’t a majority ready to vote for either nominee. It’s possible one or both will get bumps from their conventions and possible that one or both will get shellacked in the debates. Outcome: unclear.

I can’t remember one. Joel Simon, executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, has the numbers to back that up. The number of journalists, worldwide, in prison or killed while doing their jobs is at its highest since his organization began keeping records in 1992.

“This is the worst moment for journalists in recent history – and perhaps ever,” Simon told me this weekend.

The most dangerous places are conflict zones, like Syria, and countries with repressive regimes, like Turkey.

When journalists are endangered, you can be sure that free expression is under siege.

The attempted coup in Turkey put a bright light on the perils: One Turkish photojournalist was killed. Other media people were forced, at gunpoint, to read a statement over the air.

And then there’s what’s happening in the United States, which sees itself as

a stronghold of free expression.

As I write this, reporters are unpacking their flak jackets as they arrive by the thousands for the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

With extreme racial and political tensions flaring, the convention could get ugly – for activists, for journalists and for law enforcement. (As The Washington Post’s Paul Farhi reported last week, attendees can carry guns into the conference zone, but police have banned gas masks and even tennis balls.)

Frank Smyth, a former conflict reporter turned security expert, has trained hundreds of journalists recently.

Cleveland police, he told me, are “using an iron fist” in not allowing gas masks.

And he added: “If there was ever a time to ban weapons, this is it. It defies logic.”

In addition, the National Press Photographers Association is asking the Cleveland government to reconsider its prohibition of backpacks and large bags that photographers and TV journalists need to do their jobs.

Let’s hope the constitutional scorecard in Cleveland doesn’t read – Second Amendment: 1. First Amendment: 0.

for the NPPA, has trained police departments in Cleveland and Philadelphia.

Both forces were receptive, he told me, to asking themselves the crucial question that will come up repeatedly: “Does the person have a legal right to be present?”

All of this is happening as Republicans prepare to nominate a candidate whose treatment of journalists, throughout his campaign, has been appalling.

(As my colleagues Erik Wemple and Greg Sargent recently wrote, Hillary Clinton’s opacity, while a real problem, doesn’t compare.)

Simon sees strong connections between the problems in the U.S. and those worldwide.

“It’s all of a piece,” he said. “It’s the same challenges. They just aren’t playing out as dramatically here.”

Not yet, anyway.

Complicating matters everywhere is the huge technological disruption, as livestreams of sniper attacks, police shootings and attempted coups go viral.

Every smartphone can be a live broadcast camera, and every eyewitness a citizen journalist.

That has obvious benefits for the flow of information. As Simon notes,

one could get a sense of what was going on in Turkey, despite government attempts to shut down media outlets and platforms.

But the multiplicity of citizen journalists also means more people in danger, and prompts more efforts by autocrats to crack down.

What’s the answer?

Enlightened individuals, groups and governments need to speak out and to band together. Last week, 145 prominent tech-company executives signed a letter warning that Trump’s “vision stands against the open exchange of ideas, free movement of people, and productive engagement with the outside world.”

Back in 1970, another tumultuous time, Joni Mitchell sang a warning, “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.” In America and worldwide, we can’t let that happen to the free flow of ideas.

Donald Trump postponed the announcement of his vice presidential candidate, Mike Pence, because of the terrorist attack in Nice, which was in line with the modus operandi of his campaign. He didn’t want to preempt news media coverage of another radical Islamist terrorist attack.

Disarray and disorder work against the party in power, especially if the president and his presidential candidate refuse to identify radical Islamists as the threat facing civilized societies. The rollout of the mild-mannered Pence could wait until a slow-news Saturday.

The Trump campaign, pundits tell us, is violating all the old rules. The candidate has mostly eschewed “paid media” – television and radio advertising – in favor of low-cost tweets and the inevitable intensive free media coverage generated by a celebrity candidate.

This is much like the modus operandi of big commercial real estate developers, who typically finance their projects not with their own cash but what they call “OPM”: Other People’s Money. The ideal is to get 110 percent financing; the building costs you nothing. Get it constructed fast enough, within budget and before there’s a glut of available real estate, and you can easily pay the interest costs and make millions.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Taekwondo can offer a small glimpse into a foreign culture.

For more than a week last month, 32 members of Bill Cho’s United Taekwondo got downright immersed in South Korean culture.

The school took an 11-day trip to South Korea, leaving June 23 and returning July 3.

“That was fantastic,” said Gina Nicolosi, who said she’s been involved in taekwondo for about two years with her three daughters. “It is gorgeous.

I’m not a big city person, but I didn’t mind their big cities. Even though there were skyscrapers everywhere, the juxtaposition with the tall buildings and the gorgeous green mountains in the back, it made it feel not as claustrophobic.”

The trip took them throughout South Korea, which is slightly smaller than Illinois. They saw temples, theme parks, other taekwondo dojangs, fish markets and everything in between.

The trip included stops in Seoul, Incheon and Busan, among other places.

Nicolosi, who took over as chairman of the department of finance at Northern Illinois this month, said she and her daughters – Kelsea, 11, Kyley, 9, and Kora, 5 – got to see another culture.

“For example, we’re vegetarians,” Nicolosi said. “So with kids, that’s hard to begin with because they have such specific diets – grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese, but with vegetarians, it’s an even more narrow pallet that’s acceptable. Over there, it’s ... very seafood heavy. It’s hard for them to fathom vegetarianism. But the kids were very adaptable.”

said Simone, the lead CT technologist at Kishwaukee Hospital. “If there was a food she never saw, she would try it.

And she liked to be able to eat weird stuff and thought it was fun to gross out mom.”

The trip also included the chance for members of the schools to teach taekwondo classes on a couple of the

stops. Simone said her daughters still are trading emails and texts with the students they met.

Aside from seeing the different culture, Nicolosi said it gave students from both of Bill Cho’s schools in Sycamore and St. Charles to mingle.

“We have a competitive spirit between the two dojangs,” Nicolosi said.

“We have school competitions and tournament, but this time we did stuff together. So for the first time I got to know them over there, so it was like one big happy family.”

The children said they enjoyed the trip, as well.

“It was awesome,” Kelsea said. “I really enjoyed learning about their culture.”

Barbs hosting 7-on-7 round robin EDDIE CARIFIO

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – As the summer season winds down, the DeKalb football team starts its final week of 7-on-7 games with a home round robin today.

The Barbs will play host to Hononegah, Auburn and Marian Central starting at 12:30 p.m., before taking part at a tournament Thursday in St. Charles.

“The biggest thing is to keep seeing the improvement of the kids,” DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said. “We try to play a lot of different kids in a lot of different spots. Our goal is to find out what kids can do and what kids can’t do so that we don’t put kids in a bad situation. At the same time, we’re trying to find the positives and negatives of what some of the things are that we’re going to run, and see what we’re good at and what we’re not good at so we can utilize practice time more successfully.”

The team has a training camp starting Monday, and practices for the season start Aug. 8.

One of the biggest spots the Barbs need to fill is running back, where David Long ran for more than 1,000 yards last year but graduated. Quarterback Derek Kyler and receiver Cole Tucker are back, and in 7-on-7, obviously, passing is paramount.

Weckler said he’s been impressed so far by the play of 6-foot-4 receiver Jim Sauter, as the Barbs are looking for a second receiver after the graduation of 6-8 Luke Davis. He also said Zurek

“We can see if he can run a route and catch a ball in space, and what he can do after he catches a ball in space,” Weckler said. “Yeah, we can’t see what

they’re doing running the ball, but at the same, we’re going to utilize our backs in different ways. Being able to see them in a competitive setting leads to a positive evaluation.”

CHICAGO – Will the Cubs land an All-Star closer this month before the trade deadline? Or will Joe Nathan fall short of becoming the bullpen answer the Cubs seek as they head into the final two months of the season and, presumably, beyond?

They might get their first look as soon as this weekend in Milwaukee, when once-dominant right-hander could be activated from the 60-day disabled list for a Cubs debut.

Nathan, a six-time All-Star and twotime Tommy John surgery patient, passed one of his biggest rehab tests over the weekend, when he pitched back-toback days Saturday and Sunday.

He might need only one more appearance to prove he’s ready for his first big league appearance since early last season.

The sooner the better for a team trying to shore up its biggest projected weakness into October – and that might not have the appetite to win the level of bidding war it will take to land one of the few playoff-caliber late-inning arms on the market.

The Yankees have made it clear they want Kyle Schwarber if they Joe Nathan decide to trade AllStar lefty Andrew Miller to the Cubs – assuming they decide to trade him at all. Even Yankees rent-a-lefty Aroldis Chapman could ignite high-rise bidding.

Team president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer have made it clear they’re aggressively pursuing pitching toward the Aug. 1 deadlne.

The Cubs turned a series of lower-profile moves last season into enough bullpen help to be competitive in October, with Clayton Richard, Trevor Cahill and Fernando Rodney all playing significant roles.

If Nathan’s healthy enough, with enough left in the tank, he could be even more significant.

“It’s important to get a look,” Maddon said. “And it does help Theo and Jed regarding what they may be wanting to do as we get closer (to the deadline).”

It was only July, but Monday night’s victory against the team that swept them in October – and again in four games two weeks ago in New York – looked more significant, if only for how much different this one looked than any of the previous eight these teams played.

If only for the fact they might need to beat these Mets in October to get where they plan to go, and it might help to know they’ve done it during this last three-game shot this week to do it during the season.

We’ve done that prior to the break, and been playing really good baseball after the break. Hopefully, we’ll just continue to do that and keep pitching and work on the rest as we go.”

Carl Edwards noted that Earnhardt’s issue “must be serious” if he didn’t race and said he respected Earnhardt’s decision.

“I can’t imagine how tough that decision would be,” he said. “Right now with the format, you do have the opportunity to take care of yourself, do what you think is right and still have a shot at the championship.”

In the end, Earnhardt did the best thing he could to help himself. He might also end up being the example for all drivers to put their health above everything else in racing.

Earnhardt, who noted in his podcast that his most recent ImPACT test matched his preseason baseline test, will follow a treatment laid out by his doctors that includes exercises to retrain his brain.

“I put my health and quality of life as a top priority,” he said. “I always do that, so I am going to take this slow and follow the advice of my doctors.”

Dashed championship hopes still would be the case for any driver injured during NASCAR’s 10-race playoffs, but the sanctioning body has made it easier for drivers to admit they are hurt. By allowing teams to apply for a waiver so the driver will still be eligible to make the playoffs, NASCAR made it possible for Earnhardt to take himself out of the car.

Granted, playoff hopes shouldn’t trump health issues – especially concussions, something that could cause long-term damage – but this very small step has given flexibility in a system that previously had none.

Team owner Rick Hendrick made it clear he doesn’t want a driver to sacrifice his health to stay in the race car.

“Our guys know that the most important thing is their health, and if they’re in an accident and they feel like they’ve had a concussion, there’s a protocol and they need to go through it,” Hendrick said before Sunday’s race.

“It’s hard to get out of the car, but we want [Earnhardt] for the long haul.

He wants to race for a long time, so we

are going to let the doctors make those decisions.

“It’s really hard at first, and then the more you think about it, it’s the right thing to do for him and it’s the right thing to do for the team. We will just take it day-by-day.”

It’s not clear when Earnhardt was injured – he was in crashes June 12 at Michigan and July 2 at Daytona – and his symptoms originally led Earnhardt to believe his problem was allergy or sinus related. So he raced at Kentucky two weeks ago not feeling well, and when it didn’t improve, he saw a neurological specialist, who diagnosed “concussion-like symptoms.”

It could be argued that based on Earnhardt’s concussion history, NASCAR should have had him tested after one or both of his accidents. But, NASCAR has made it easier than ever for a driver to lessen the stakes of seeking treatment and the participant should take some responsibility for their own health.

That doesn’t make it any easier for drivers, particularly those who grew up watching a generation that drove hurt.

Former NIU center fielder Fletcher Packers to honor Favre signs with Normal Cornbelters again this season Former Northern Illinois baseball player Justin Fletcher signed a contract with the Normal Cornbelters of the Frontier League on Friday, the university announced Monday.

Fletcher was a three-year starter for the Huskies, starting all 56 games in center field, and his .301 batting average was the second best for the Huskies. He became the fourth NIU player to sign with a professional team in the past four years and is the first from the 2016 season to do so.

The Cornbelters were 23-28 in the first half of this season in the Frontier League, which is an Independent League franchise. In his first three games with the Cornbelters, Fletcher went 4 for 11 (.363) against the Windy City Thunderbolts.

In ‘peanut punch’ video, Tillman says he’s retiring from NFL

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Longtime Bears cornerback Charles Tillman is retiring from the NFL after 13 seasons.

The 35-year-old Tillman, known for his “peanut punch” after forcing 44 career fumbles, spent his first 12 seasons with the Bears and went to two Pro Bowls.

He started 12 games last season with the Carolina Panthers before suffering a season-ending knee injury and missing the team’s run to the Super Bowl. Carolina didn’t attempt to re-sign him.

Tillman announced his retirement Monday on Twitter, posting a YouTube video of him knocking things out of people’s hands, including a doughnut his daughter was eating.

Ex-Pro Bowl RB Foster reaches deal with Dolphins

MIAMI – Four-time Pro Bowl running back Arian Foster took a big step Monday in his comeback from a torn Achilles tendon.

He found a team.

Foster signed a $1.5 million, one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins, and said he’s fully healthy.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Former Packers quarterback Brett Favre plans to make another special trip back to Lambeau Field.

The team announced Monday that Favre will appear at a halftime ceremony of Green Bay’s game Oct. 16 against Dallas.

The ceremony will honor Favre’s induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which will take place Aug. 6 in Canton, Ohio.

Favre and the organization have mended their relationship after the quarterback’s bitter departure in 2008 stemming from questions about whether he would retire.

He returned to Green Bay last Thanksgiving, when the team unveiled his retired No. 4 on the Lambeau facade.

In the October ceremony, Favre’s name will be unveiled on the stadium facade alongside other former Packers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

AL-worst Twins fire GM Ryan

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan was fired Monday with the team holding the worst record in the American League and on pace to lose 100 games. The Twins entered the day 33-58, 21 games out of first place in the AL Central. Only Atlanta had a worse record in the majors.

NFL to test computer chips in footballs in preseason

NEW YORK – The NFL will test computer chips in footballs this preseason to determine how well the balls perform, particularly in the kicking game.

Data collected from the chips also could help with officiating in the future, including goal-line and short-yardage plays.

As part of the league’s Next Gen Stats program, the competition committee will review results for potential uses of the data collected. Such information could wind up being part of Thursday night NFL telecasts this season.

plenty of both of them. Intrigue in camp often comes from rookies, and with Bullard considered by draft analysts to be a steal for the Bears, fans will want to see what he can do in Bourbonnais.

Old guard fighting for roster spots:

Three of the longest-tenured Bears are on the defensive line – former GM Phil Emery draft picks Will Sutton, Ego Ferguson and Cornelius Washington. With the top four linemen probably set, it’s likely at least one of these players gets cut this summer. Sutton got the most playing time last year and brings value as the backup nose tackle.

Ferguson transitioned nicely to the 3-4 defense before a knee injury ended his 2015 campaign. Washington has rare size that should fit well as a 3-4 base defensive end, but he missed all of last year with a quad injury. Some of the final remnants of Emery’s drafts have a final chance to stick with the roster this summer.

Packing them in: The Summer League broke two attendance records in Las Vegas, including the overall attendance mark with 108,931. The previous mark was 99,437, set last year. In 11 days, the summer league averaged 9,902 a day.

The event also broke the single-day mark July 9, when 16,208 visited both the Cox Pavilion and Thomas and Mack Center. The spotlight game that night featured the top two draft picks in last month’s draft, Simmons and the Lakers’ Brandon Ingram. The previous mark was 12,422, set last season, also on the day the top two draft picks met, with Towns and D’Angelo Russell facing off.

Russia’s participation in Rio uncertain

The Associated Press A scathing report outlining a state-sanctioned doping system in Russia prompted immediate calls for the nation’s entire team to be sidelined from the Summer Games, raising the possibility that the Olympics could go on without a sports superpower for the first time since the 1980s.

The investigation released Monday confirmed a scheme run out of the anti-doping lab in Moscow that ensnared 28 summer and winter sports, from track to snowboarding to table tennis. It lasted at least four years and involved at

least 312 positive tests that went unreported at the behest of higher-ups in the country’s sports ministry.

“A mind-blowing level of corruption within both Russian sport and government,” said Travis Tygart, the CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

The World Anti-Doping Agency swiftly called for the International Olympic Committee to consider a full ban of the Russian team from the Summer Olympics, which start Aug. 5 in Rio de Janiero. IOC president Thomas Bach said the committee wouldn’t hesitate to apply the toughest sanctions available.

The IOC executive board will meet today to begin sorting through options.

It’s no sure thing the Russians will receive a blanket ban. It’s a decision filled with political ramifications that involve a key Olympic country. It puts the IOC in the position of ruling against against one of its biggest supporters, a nation that spent more than $50 billion hosting the Winter Games in Sochi just two years ago. Not since the back-to-back boycotts by the United States in 1980, then the Soviet Union in 1984, have the Olympics been contested without one of its biggest players.

HOUSTON – A federal judge sentenced a former scouting director of the St. Louis Cardinals to nearly four years in prison Monday for hacking the Houston Astros’ player personnel database and email system in an unusual case of high-tech cheating involving two Major League Baseball clubs.

Christopher Correa had pleaded guilty in January to five counts of unauthorized access of a protected computer from 2013 to at least 2014, the same year he was promoted to director of baseball development in St. Louis. He was fired last summer and now faces 46 months behind bars and a court order to pay $279,038 in restitution. He had faced up to five years Christopher in prison on each count. Correa Correa will remain free on bond until he reports to federal prison within about six weeks.

Correa read a letter in court before he was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lynn N. Hughes and he said he was “overwhelmed with remorse and regret for my actions” that cost him his career and his home.

“I violated my values and it was wrong. I behaved shamefully,” he said. “The whole episode represents the worst thing I’ve done in my life by far.”

The judge scolded Correa for his continued blaming of the Astros for his actions, saying Correa was acting like he was in middle school.

Hughes did not elaborate on this information – part of a sealed presentencing report – but when he pleaded guilty in January, Correa had maintained he found proprietary Cardinals information in the Astros’ database.

Hughes said Correa’s actions were primarily about a loss of trust.

“The loss is that every baseball team has much tighter security, making it harder for honest people to go about their daily lives. ... A lot of little people whose lives were adversely affected by the cost taken to defend against people like you,” Hughes said.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred could discipline the Cardinals, possibly with a fine or a loss of draft picks, but has said only that he looked forward to getting details on the case from federal authorities.

“Now that the criminal process has been completed, commissioner Manfred has asked the Department of Investigations to conduct a complete investigation of the facts in this matter, including requesting information from the appropriate law enforcement authorities,” the league said in a statement. “The commissioner hopes that the investigation can be completed promptly to put him in a position to take appropriate action.”

LAS VEGAS – Denzel Valentine put a thrilling finish on the NBA Summer League.

Valentine hit the tying 3-pointer with the final second of regulation, then made a jumper at the buzzer in overtime to give the Bulls an 8482 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night.

Valentine was scoreless on 0-for6 shooting through three quarters, but he proved that fortunes change quickly in Las Vegas. His 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds forced the extra period after Tyus Jones had just given Minnesota a 77-74 lead on a 3 with 3.6 seconds to go.

It was tied again on former Northern Illinois Huskie Xavier Silas’ 3 with 11.7 seconds remaining in OT, but Valentine, the college player of the year from Michigan State, worked the clock down before making his spinning jumper in the lane as the Bulls finished 7-0.

That ended the NBA portion of summer basketball after leagues in Orlando, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas over the past two weeks.

Rookies got their first looks, some veterans got their last shots, and it ended with a play that had Twitter buzzing like a game that took place in June instead of July.

And just as the NBA stops, USA Basketball starts. Right on the same UNLV campus just hours before the Summer League championship game, the U.S. Olympic team held its first training camp practice. The Olympics start Aug. 5 in Rio de Janeiro, and the Americans will hope to be playing for a third straight gold medal Aug. 21.

Then, finally, the “offseason” will start.

A look back at the summer: Denzel MVP! MVP! OK, Valentine it’s actually Most Outstanding Player in the Final Four, so technically Tyus Jones would be MOP, MVP. The Timberwolves’ point guard won Summer League MVP honors and finished with 27 points in nearly leading the 24th-seeded Wolves to the championship. He won the Final Four Most Outstanding Player award after leaving Duke past Wisconsin for the 2015 national championship.

Thibodeau Bowl: That’s what the Summer League championship game was dubbed, with coach Tom Thibodeau’s new team (Minnesota) facing the Bulls team he coached for five seasons before he was fired.

Thibodeau, an assistant on Mike Krzyzewski’s U.S. Olympic team staff, took in the championship game from a baseline seat near Timberwolves players Karl-Anthony Towns and Zach LaVine.

With temperatures into the high 80s for most of last week, Camp Power campers cooled off with a giant slipand-slide set up Thursday by the DeKalb Fire Department. Station 3 of the DeKalb Fire Department brought out two hose lines to soak the campers and mentors while they dove and slid in Welsh Park.

Hormone therapy benefits vary Dear Dr. K: I’m in my third year of menopause, and my doctor won’t prescribe hormone therapy. He says it increases the risk of heart disease. I think I recall you told another reader this is not true. Is my doctor right, or are you?

Dear Reader: You won’t be surprised to learn I think I’m right. But in the previous column you refer to, I didn’t say exactly what you remember. I said the effect of hormone therapy (HT) on heart disease depends on a woman’s age and how recently she entered menopause. In younger women, in their first six to 10 years after menopause, HT protects against heart disease. In contrast, in older women, HT increases the risk of heart disease. It’s called the “age effect.”

Hormone therapy usually involves a combination of both estrogens (the main female hormones) and progestins (other important female hormones). Estrogen helps reduce the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes. Progestin reduces the risk of cancer of the uterus.

When we talk about the effect of HT on heart disease, we’re focusing on the most common type of heart disease: atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis causes cholesterol-filled “plaques” in the walls of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. As these plaques grow, they can block the flow of blood through the arteries. When blood flow to a part of the heart muscle stops, the muscle dies. That’s what happens in a heart attack.

A plaque has a cap made of fibers that hold in the plaque’s pool of cholesterol. In some plaques, called “vulnerable plaques,” inflammation inside the plaque eats away at the fibrous cap. Suddenly, the fibers rupture, cholesterol spills into the artery, a blood clot forms – and blood flow to a part of the heart stops.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Estrogen slows the development of plaques. By the time a woman reaches menopause, her own natural estrogen has helped protect her against developing plaques. By 10 years after menopause, however, the average woman has vulnerable plaques that threaten to rupture. Estrogen increases inflammation inside the plaques and causes blood to clot more easily. So estrogen now increases the risk of heart attacks.

A study published in March 2016 in The New England Journal of Medicine supports what I’m saying. More than 600 women were divided into two groups: those fewer than six years past menopause (called the “early postmenopause” group) and those 10 years or more past menopause (the “late postmenopause” group). Each group was treated for up to seven years with either HT or a placebo.

In the early postmenopause group, HT slowed the development of atherosclerosis.

In the late postmenopause group, it did not.

Several other studies of a similar type have come to the same conclusion. Also, studies in animals – including monkeys, which are biologically similar to humans – conclude there is an “age effect.”

You are just three years into menopause. Unless you already have heart disease or have risk factors for heart disease, HT is more likely to protect you from heart disease than to put you at risk.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY I am in shock.

My grown son, Jeanne “Ryan,” recently Phillips told me he was molested by his late father when he was a young boy. I had no idea, but I believe him. Ryan is an only child and has recently started seeing a counselor.

I loved my husband very much and I believed he loved me, but I no longer know what to think or how to feel. If he were still alive, I most likely would leave him. But what do I do with more than 40 years of mostly good memories? When I think about my late husband now, I just feel numb. – Not A Clue In Indiana Dear Not A Clue: That your son didn’t tell you sooner, while you could have intervened, is regrettable. And that he is now seeing a counselor about it is laudable – you should give him all the love and support you can. I don’t blame you for having mixed emotions, but at this point it is too late for you to change anything. Hang onto the good memories and let them comfort you, because you can’t change history.

Dear Abby: I saw myself in the Jan. 15 letter from “Diana In San Diego,” the lifelong compulsive nail biter who wants to stop. I was diagnosed with trichotillomania (hair pulling and skin picking) three years ago, and it is closely related to nail biting. The trichotillomania learning center website, www.trich.org, is worth checking out for treatment options such as medications, behavioral therapy and support groups. – Erica In Massachusetts Dear Erica: Thank you for the information. I received a deluge of helpful, caring responses to Diana’s letter, and several readers mentioned trichotillomania in the more severe cases.

Buffing was mentioned as a way to smooth imperfections that could be “triggers.” A reader in Virginia added decorations to her nails – decals, stencils and rhinestones – that served as an impediment and cured her of the habit.

Other readers have used artificial (acrylic) nails as a way to allow their natural fingernails to grow out. James in Delaware helped his ashamed then-fiancée hide her bitten-off, stubby nails when showing off her engagement ring by suggesting she put on artificial ones. While she proudly showed off the ring to everyone, her own nails grew out beautifully and she never chewed them again.

Additional growing-out tips mentioned by readers were: coating the nails with a hardening solution, keeping the cuticles moist with petroleum jelly, cuticle cream – even lip balm. A reader reassured Diana there are “bad-tasting” products that successfully work as a deterrent.

Breaking off a corner of one of her front teeth stopped Pat in Texas. Others found addressing a vitamin deficiency did the trick for them. Wearing a tight rubber band around the wrist to snap when the urge hits can provide an incentive to stop. And from Sandi in San Francisco: “A teacher showed me an enlarged picture taken from a microscope of what was under fingernails. Now I don’t even think about biting.”

In two-over-one, the auction is one spade - one no-trump - two hearts - two no-trump - three diamonds (or three no-trump) - three no-trump - pass.

Against three no-trump, East knew from partner’s fourth-highest club-two lead that declarer had five clubs, but no shift looked sensible. So she won with her ace and returned the queen. South took that trick, drove out the diamond ace, and claimed 11 tricks.
