Bicyclists not deterred by rain at annual Biking with Beanzie

news@dailychronicle.com Bicyclists endured heavy rainfall this weekend during an annual tradition that aims to make DeKalb County a more bike-friendly place.

Biking with Beanzie, a recreational riding event, drew hundreds of bicyclists of all levels Sunday to DeKalb High School. The ride has served as an annual fundraiser for Kishwaukee Bike Pathway projects and other organizations since its inception 18 years ago.

“The nice thing is what we get from this ride – all the profits go back into the community,” ride organizer Toney Xidis said. “It’s literally a community fundraiser ride.”

Xidis said funds from this year’s ride will go toward bike pathway development. Projects that have been funded in part by the ride include the Peace Road and Dresser Road bike paths.

“We need more bike trails because it helps to make drivers, I think, be more aware of bikers on the road,” said bicyclist Nancy Tipps. “Plus, it’s just good for your health.”

Riders were able to choose from routes of 25, 42 and 65 miles starting from the high school.

“The nice thing is what we get from this ride – all the profits go back into the community.”

Biking with Beanzie organizer The 76-and- 102 mile routes were canceled because of the rainfall, the first time such cancellations had occurred in Biking with Beanzie’s history, Xidis said.

The event’s name comes from Xidis’s childhood nickname, Beanzie. He said the ride was given his nickname in celebration of everyone’s inner child.

“Part of it, from my perspective, is that Beanzie represents the kid in all of us and the idea of never letting go of being a kid and going out and enjoying having fun,” Xidis said.

Bicyclist Michelle Morris said the Sunday morning showers did not deter her from completing her 42 miles.

“It’s called living in the moment,” Morris said.

FUNDRAISER AND ‘FRIEND-RAISER’ Fair-like benefit helps fund respite house for families of hospital patients

news@dailychronicle.com SYCAMORE – Barry Cohn was a guest at Sycamore’s Pay-It-Forward House in September 2014 while his wife was a patient at Kindred Hospital. The Streamwood resident said staying at the house was “like home” and the volunteer staff was “like family.”

Cohn, who now supports all of the Pay-It-Forward House’s events, was one of many volunteers at Sunday’s “Meet Me at the Fair,” the 11th annual fundraiser for the Pay-It-Forward House, which provides homelike lodging for family members of patients in any of the DeKalb County hospitals.

“The house provides families the ability to stay close, and it gave me the opportunity to be two minutes away from my wife,” Cohn said.

“The house provided a respite. I got to know the volunteers and the staff at Kindred Hospital. Sycamore is a community that cares about every-

one.”

Families and residents from DeKalb and Sycamore enjoyed free food and games, face painting, mu-

sic from the Black Tie Trio and a silent auction at the Sunday afternoon event, which was held at Blumen Gardens in Sycamore. All the

money raised from the event funds the Pay-It-Forward House’s general operations. The house also received a $15,000 check Sunday from the Kindred Foundation to help with expenses.

The majority of the house’s guests have family members at Kindred Hospital, which provides long-term acute care to people from across the country. Many of Kindred’s patients stay there for several weeks.

The Pay-It-Forward House, which was established in 2005 by the Mathey and Eubanks families of Sycamore, is funded solely by donations and volunteers, and it relies on support from the community.

“The house is vital. It helps with patient recovery because they recover better when their family is close,” said Micki Dettman, chief clinical officer at Kindred Hospital. “So this is an opportunity for everyone to pay it forward to the Pay-It-Forward House.”

Bikers host benefit ride to honor slain officers

news@dailychronicle.com Retired police officer John Azoo of Sycamore will never forget the sacrifices the police make every day. Even though he didn’t know the policemen who were killed July 7 in the Dallas shooting, he wanted to honor them by participating in a benefit ride Sunday sponsored by the American Legion Riders of Sycamore Post 99.

“My heart and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those officers,” said Azoo, who is a member of the Warriors Watch Riders group.

“Any loss of life is a great loss to our country. This ride brings people together for the purpose of honoring others. It’s a sad situation. But we want to say, ‘Thank you.’ ” Riders from all over northern Illinois gathered with DeKalb police officers and firefighters for the benefit ride, which began at noon at DeKalb Harley-Davidson and traveled through DeKalb and Sycamore before stopping at the Genoa Veterans Club. The group asked each rider for a donation, and all the money

bikers from all over the region to participate in the ride to show respect for law enforcement.

“This could’ve happened anywhere – it could’ve been our officers,” he said. “We just wanted to show support for the people of Dallas as well as our local officers. It’s very sad we’re doing this for the reason we’re doing it. Any time an officer goes down, we should all feel it in our hearts.

They’re out there protecting our communities.”

Officer Jared Burke of the DeKalb Police Department was one of two DeKalb officers who were leading the ride on their motorcycles. He said he was happy to participate in the ride.

“It’s important to be a part of positive police contact, and it’s nice to be acknowledged,” he said. “Even though [the shooting] happened in Dallas, it brings recognition to different parts of the country and lets people know there are organizations that are concerned.”

“Years ago, the town had the Kingston Picnic, with bed races down Main Street and Five Points Road,” Haines said. “We wanted to bring back the bed races, but we couldn’t close down the road. We wanted a fun, unique event, so when Michael mentioned cardboard boats, we loved the idea.”

Four boats participated in the regatta this year, and awards were distributed in six different categories. The Ark 2.0 won the Fleet-of-the-Fleet award and $100 for having the fastest time in the indi-

vidual race and the Head-to-Head award and $100 for winning the group race.

The Kardboard Klipper won the Kishwaukee Ferry award for having the most people on a boat: three. The Pirate Ship won the Flamboyancy award for the best decorated boat. The S.S. Minto won the Titanic award for the most spectacular sinking. And the Pirates of Pizzazz award for having the most spirit.

This year’s Kingston Fest also included 5K, the Kingston Library book sale, free face painting, a 50/50 raffle, a toucha-truck with a Genoa-Kingston Fire Department and free ice cream and bounce houses sponsored by the Kingston Park District. Refreshments were sold by Genoa-Kingston Boy Scouts, and the Gracie Center PopUp Shop sold popcorn and other treats.

During the Kingston fest, event attendees could play old-fashioned games for free, including horseshoes, an egg toss, water balloon toss, hula hoop contest and bags. Winners of the games won coupons from Casey’s General Store and free pizzas from the Corner Grill on Main in Genoa.

KINGSTON – When John Fischer of McHenry attended the Kingston Kardboard Boat Regatta last year, his grandsons asked him if they could build their own boat to compete.

Fischer has been working with his grandsons since January to build a boat out of cardboard. On Saturday, the boat, the Kardboard Klipper, came in second place in both the individual and group races and won the Kishwaukee Ferry award for the most people in a boat.

“We were inspired to build a boat after attending the event last year,” Fischer said. “We had a lot of fun building the boat, and my son and granddaughter built their own boat. We couldn’t wait to see if the boats would float. I can’t wait to come back next year.”

The 13th annual Kingston Kardboard Boat Regatta was held Saturday in Kingston Township Park along the Kishwaukee River. The regatta was the last event of the 15th annual Kingston Fest.

Last year, the regatta was postponed after heavy rains caused the river to flood, but this year, the river was calm and shallow.

Top Ill. Republicans to be no-shows in Cleveland

SPRINGFIELD – When the Republican Party launches its quadrennial celebration in Cleveland this week to anoint its nominee for president, some prominent party faithful from Illinois won’t be there.

First-term U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is upfront with his reason – he doesn’t like the presumptive nominee, businessman Donald Trump, calling him “too bigoted and racist” for the job.

But other top leaders, including Gov. Bruce Rauner, are joining Republicans from around the country in ditching the convention without saying why. Many face tough re-election races in November and are trying to distance themselves from the contentious name at the top of the ticket.

“I will be traveling the state of Illinois, meeting with community leaders, business leaders and some legislators and signing some of the most important legislation that got passed this spring,” Rauner said last week after declining to answer reporters’ questions about the convention or the presidential race, in general.

Precautions by police in Chicago after Baton Rouge shootings

CHICAGO – The Chicago Police Department responded to the shooting deaths of three law enforcement officers in Louisiana by continuing requiring officers to ride in pairs and in uniform as they’ve been doing since the slayings of five officers in Dallas.

Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said officers were notified about Sunday morning’s shooting in Baton Rouge, but that there’s no known threat to police in Chicago.

The shooting, which left three officers dead and three others injured in Baton Rouge, came less than two weeks after a black man was shot and killed by police in that city. On July 7,

Midwest storms to precede sweltering heat wave

CHICAGO – Weekend thunderstorms and at least two tornadoes that rolled through the Midwest are expected to give way to a blistering hot and sticky week.

Chicago police officer saves boy from drowning

ORLAND PARK – A suburban fire department is crediting an off-duty Chicago police officer with saving the life of a boy who was pulled from the bottom of a swimming pool.

The Orland Fire Protection District said in a news release it was the quick lifesaving actions of Cindy Guerra that saved the

committee member. Two former party chairmen are delegates, along with sitting state legislators who are delegates or alternates.

Many who won’t make the trip clearly have their eyes on November.

Kirk, who faces a popular Democratic congresswoman, Tammy Duckworth, announced last month that he wouldn’t support Trump, saying he doesn’t have the proper presidential temperament.

Report: Chicago’s new schools add to race, class woes

CHICAGO – Under Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chicago Public Schools has spent millions on new schools and pricey additions while putting little effort into creating more racially and socioeconomically diverse schools.

Documents obtained by WBEZFM show that Emanuel plans to continue this pattern, using revenue from a record property

tax hike passed last year.

Over the past six years, the school district has spent $320 million on new school construction. It’s planning to spend another $330 million.

Emanuel justifies this spending because the schools are short on space and overflowing with students. But there’s been little attempt to try to get white, middle- and upper-middle-class students at these schools to instead attend one of the more than 300 Chicago schools that are deemed underused, even when those schools are close in proximity. Most of the underused schools serve poor, black and Latino students.

Richard Kahlenberg, an expert on economic integration who works for the bipartisan think tank The Century Foundation, said the result is that the underused schools are kept economically and racially isolated, which is not only expensive, but bad for children.

CLEVELAND – Dissident delegates making a last-gasp attempt to prevent Donald Trump’s nomination at the GOP National Convention said they will try forcing a state-by-state vote on the rules governing the gathering when it opens Monday.

But even if the rebels can get such a roll call to occur, it’s one they seem likely to lose.

“What will happen on the floor, if there’s any attempt, is the party and Trump are going to rise against it,” Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign chairman, told reporters Sunday.

The convention’s rules committee decisively defeated the dissidents seeking to make the changes late last week, thanks to an alliance between the Trump campaign and RNC leaders on that panel. Manafort said there was no longer a viable “stop Trump” movement.

Concern over crackdown after failed Turkey coup

ISTANBUL – After a failed coup against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the government moved swiftly Sunday to shore up his power and remove those perceived as an enemy, saying it has detained 6,000 people.

The crackdown targeted not only generals and soldiers, but a wide swath of the judiciary that sometimes has blocked Erdogan, raising concerns the effort to

oust him will push Turkey even further into authoritarian rule.

Friday night’s uprising by a faction of the military appeared to take the government – and much of the world – by surprise.

The plotters sent warplanes firing on key government installations and tanks rolling into major cities, but it ended hours later when loyal government forces regained control of the military, and civilians took to the streets in support of Erdogan. At least 294 people were killed and more than 1,400 wounded, the government said.

N.H. city cops use Pokemon Go to lure fugitives

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Police in New Hampshire’s largest city have gotten the Pokemon Go bug, trying to lure fugitives with the popular app.

A post on the Manchester Police Department Facebook page announces that police recently detected one of the more rare Pokemon characters – a Charizard – in the booking area. The post invites those whose names appear on a list linked to the post to be “one of the lucky ones” to come capture the Charizard.

The list includes the names of the more than 500 fugitives on the department’s wanted persons roundup.

Sgt. Eric Knight said Sunday the post has yet to net an arrest. But it’s been popular with its Facebook followers.

Former Marine kills 3 police officers in Baton Rouge, wounds 3 others

BATON ROUGE, La. – A former Marine dressed in black and carrying extra ammunition shot and killed three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers Sunday, less than two weeks after a black man was fatally shot by police here in a confrontation that sparked nightly protests that reverberated nationwide.

Three other officers were wounded, one critically. Police said the gunman was killed at the scene.

The shooting – less than a mile from police headquarters – added to the tensions across the country between the black community and police. Just days earlier, one of the slain officers had posted an emotional Facebook message about the challenges of police work in the current environment.

President Barack Obama urged Americans to tamp down inflammatory words and actions.

“We don’t need careless accusations thrown around to score political points or to advance an agenda. We need to temper our words and open our hearts ... all of us,” Obama said.

The gunman was identified as Gavin Long of Kansas City, who turned 29 on Sunday.

Long, who was black, served in the Marines from 2005 to 2010, reaching the rank of sergeant. He deployed to Iraq from June 2008 to January 2009, according to military records.

Although he was believed to be the only person who fired at officers, authorities said they were unsure if he had some kind of help.

“We are not ready to say he acted alone,” state police spokesman Major Doug Cain said.

Two “persons of interest” were detained for questioning in the nearby town of Addis.

They later were released without any charges being filed. Cain said authorities planned to continue investigating whether the gunman got any assistance – “indirectly, directly here or at home.”

While in the military, Long was awarded several medals, including one for good conduct, and received an honorable discharge. His occupational expertise was listed as “data network specialist.”

It was the fourth high-profile deadly encounter in the U.S. involving police over the past two weeks. In all, the violence has cost the lives of eight officers, including those in Baton Rouge, and two civilians and sparked a national debate over race and policing.

Authorities initially believed that additional assailants might be at large, but hours later said there were no other active shooters.

The shooting began at a gas station on Airline Highway. According to radio traffic, Baton Rouge police answered a report of a man with an assault rifle and were met by gunfire.

For several long minutes, they did not know where it was coming from.

The radio exchanges were made public Sunday by the website Broadcastify.

Nearly 2½ minutes after the first report of an officer getting shot, an officer on the scene is heard saying police do not know the shooter’s location.

Almost six minutes pass after the first shots are reported before police say they have determined the shooter’s location. About 30 seconds later, someone says shots still are being fired.

The recording lasts about 17 minutes and includes urgent calls for an armored personnel carrier called a BearCat. Of the two officers who survived the shooting, one was hospitalized in critical condition, and the other was in fair condition. Another officer was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, hospital officials said.

Two of the slain officers were from the Baton Rouge Police Department: 32-year-old Montrell Jackson, who had been on the force for a decade, and 41-year-old Matthew Gerald, who had been there for less than a year.

The third fatality was Brad Garafola, 45 and a 24-year veteran of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.

Jackson, who was black, posted his message on Facebook on July 8, just three days after the death of 37-year-old Alton Sterling, a black man killed by white Baton Rouge officers after a scuffle at a convenience store.

In the message, Jackson said he was physically and emotionally tired and complained that while in uniform, he gets nasty looks.

When he’s out of uniform, he said, some people consider him a threat.

Tennis balls are banned, guns OK near convention

Planning to visit the 1.7-square-mile area in downtown Cleveland where many of the events and protests connected to the Republican National Convention will be held this week? Be sure not to take tennis balls, metal-tipped umbrellas or canned goods, which will be banned – but no need to leave behind your AR-15 or other guns. Those will be allowed under Ohio’s open-carry laws.

That a can of tuna fish is deemed more dangerous than military-style weaponry is indicative of the irrationality of U.S. gun policy. Don’t expect a fix anytime soon. The Republican-led House of Representatives is going on its summer vacation without making a genuine effort – let alone taking any action – to inject sense into the nation’s gun laws.

Cleveland officials are preparing for large numbers of protesters. Some – including the New Black Panther Party and a group of current and former members of the military called the Oath Keepers – have said they plan to carry weapons. No guns will be allowed inside the Quicken Loans Arena or within the perimeter controlled by the Secret Service, but Ohio’s open-carry laws will allow those who legally own guns to take them into the event zone.

The prospect of a politically charged environment in which there are people armed to the teeth has rightly given pause to some. “The last thing in the world we need is anybody walking around here with AR-15s strapped to their back,” Stephen Loomis, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, told the New York Times.

On July 7 in Dallas, while five police officers were being shot to death and seven others wounded, police were hampered by confusion over which people with guns were suspects to be apprehended and which were protesters who had brought their guns because misguided Texas law allowed them. “There’s been the presumption,” said Dallas Police Chief David Brown, “that a good guy with a gun is the best way to resolve some of these things. Well, we don’t know who the good guy is versus who the bad guy is if everybody starts shooting.”

In October in Colorado, a neighbor spotted someone carrying a weapon and called 911. Because the behavior was legal under state law, police did not respond immediately. The gunman shot three people. Forty states, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, allow people to openly carry shotguns and rifles (including assault rifles) in public without a permit or safety training, and 30 states allow people to openly carry handguns without a permit or safety training. The gun lobby agenda of “guns everywhere, no questions asked” is extreme and irresponsible, but it has been skillfully sold.

Consider how House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., responded when asked Tuesday about the Dallas police chief’s statement about the difficulty that open-carry laws create for law enforcement. “What we should be focused on right now are solutions,” the speaker said. “I think what we should be focused on is listening to people in communities who have done a good job of merging law enforcement with the communities so that these kinds of problems don’t occur.” You get the picture: Let’s talk about anything except the obvious and inescapable need for gun control.

To The Editor: I am a retired police sergeant who was working April 20, 1992, when, shortly after midnight, a police officer was murdered.

I was on the afternoon shift and had just finished a busy tour. We were at the station trying to complete paperwork so we could go home. Over the radio a call came out as a burglary in progress being witnessed by the caller.

Even though we were off duty, being a small department, the three of us responded to assist on the call.

When we were en route, an officer on scene radioed an “Officer Down” and requested an ambulance.

Seconds later, we arrived.

A car dealership had been broken into, and a convertible that had been on the sales floor had been

driven through the window, struck a police car and the officer who was positioned beside it. The officer subsequently died. The car ended up in the middle of the roadway.

There was a person sitting on the driver’s side of the wrecked convertible who would not comply with orders to exit the car. I had a gun pointed at him and could see the hammer slowly pulling back. Knowing that even though the shooting was justified, I chose not to fire. I pulled him from the car, laid him on the roadway and handcuffed him.

He was injured, and I called for an ambulance. I ended up being with him at the hospital for almost eight hours until I was relieved by another officer. He was charged with murder, convicted at trial and eventually died in prison.

When a police officer is killed, the pain to fellow officers and the

community is intense and immeasurable.

There are a lot of talking heads in the media saying canned rhetoric sound bites with stern mournful faces about the officers killed in Dallas. These are the same ones who, earlier in the week, were condemning police officers as a bunch of out-of-control racist murders.

It always amused me that when someone was elected to office, they gained instant knowledge in police operations.

Instead of protesting, try making a neighborhood better. Instead of using time blocking streets, use it to start cleaning communities and making an effort to show that the people are not going to tolerate persons who are a blight on those who make an honest living.

He enters his nominating convention in Cleveland as the same divisive bully he has been throughout the campaign – a man singularly ill-suited to lead a diverse nation.

Trump has not just pandered to the prejudices of his mostly white supporters; he also has encouraged them with his incendiary promises to limit immigration and his vicious insults of the president, starting with his claim that Obama wasn’t born in the United States.

Trump works assiduously to keep us divided, a state that sharpens his political advantage.

But the simple truth is that neither Obama nor Trump created this moment.

This unruly time has been more than 200 years in the making.

We have not yet put away the old ghosts, so they continue to haunt us.

Take the police shootings that have prompted protests around the country during the last several days. There is nothing new about police violence toward black

citizens, nothing unusual about bias in the criminal justice system, nothing unexpected about the institutional racism that conspires to imprison black Americans disproportionately.

Just read Douglas Blackmon’s “Slavery by Another Name,” an account of law enforcement practices in the Deep South after the Civil War. White business owners demanded low- to no-cost labor, and they got it by imprisoning black men unfairly and putting them to work.

To justify their rank oppression and their state-sanctioned violence – black people were lynched with impunity for more than a century – powerful whites trafficked in awful stereotypes about black criminality. Those old biases – those hateful stereotypes – didn’t just fade away with the civil rights movement.

As President Obama put it during his moving and elegant speech memorializing the Dallas dead, “We also know that centuries of racial discrimination, of slavery, and subjugation, and Jim Crow – they didn’t simply vanish with the law against segregation.”

Still, there are many who would dismiss Obama, whose political views demand they grant him no legitimacy.

Maybe they’d listen instead to

Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, who rose to the floor of the Senate on Wednesday to give a deeply personal account of his maltreatment at the hands of police officers.

Scott is a rock-solid conservative who rarely agrees with the president about anything. He is also black, and, as he noted, that’s enough to kindle suspicion from some law enforcement authorities.

“In the course of one year, I’ve been stopped seven times by law enforcement officers – not four, not five, not six, but seven times – in one year, as an elected official. Was I speeding sometimes? Sure. But the vast majority of the time, I was pulled over for nothing more than driving a new car in the wrong neighborhood or some other reasons just as trivial,” he said.

That’s a powerful testament to the ways in which the old ghosts still haunt us, even in an age of a black president and two black U.S. senators.

We are not post-racial yet, and until we can confront and exorcise the demons of our past, we never will be.

So we’re not post-racial yet.

Instead, we are preoccupied with race, chafing along the color line, possessed of wildly divergent views of authority, justice and equality.

According to a New York Times/ CBS News poll conducted in the aftermath of widely publicized police shootings and the attacks on Dallas police officers, 60 percent of Americans believe race relations are growing worse.

Some among us lay the blame for that, absurdly, at the feet of President Barack Obama, who was supposed to usher in an era of peace, harmony and racial healing – at least according to some utterly naive predictions made at the time of his first election.

Instead, it seems, his presence in the Oval Office precipitated a furious backlash, a tidal wave of resentment from those whites who see his ascendance as a sign of their decline.

But that’s not the president’s fault. He studiously has tried to avoid stirring the cauldron of race, to bridge the color chasm, to unite the warring American tribes. His only crime is in symbolizing the anxieties of those white Americans who see a black man in power as the bete noire of their nightmares.

It makes more sense to blame the presumptive GOP nominee, Donald

Rock & Ride For Ricky, a fundraiser for a DeKalb teen who received a heart transplant in April, will take place Saturday.

Ricky De La Cruz was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome that has required several open heart surgeries since birth. Ricky received a new heart on April 19 at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago and will require continued care for the rest of his life.

The Rock & Ride For Ricky event will begin with a motorcycle ride from Joe’s Hub Lounge, 413 Cherry Ave. in Rochelle. Registration for the ride starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 10:45 a.m. Breakfast burritos will be served. The riders will stop in Monroe Cen-

ter, Belvidere, Kirkland and Sycamore and finish at the DeKalb Moose Lodge. Cost is $20 per driver and $10 per passenger.

Live music, dinner and a silent auction is planned at the DeKalb Moose Lodge, 1231 Lincoln Highway. Three bands – Downpour, BlazeDaze and Sixx – will start playing at 3 p.m.

The cost for dinner only at the DeKalb Moose Lodge is $15 per adult and $5 per child.

All event proceeds will go to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, which is helping Ricky’s family raise money for transplant-related expenses.

Glidden Homestead hosts ‘Postcards of DeKalb’ DAILY CHRONICLE The Glidden Homestead will host a program from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 24, given by DeKalb area native Peter Espe.

He will present some of his more than 150 local postcards featuring historical views of Northern Illinois University, downtown, the library, industry, and civic scenes, among other areas. The collection demonstrates how local towns and cities change over time.

CHICAGO – The Cubs came out of the All-Star break showing signs their midseason skid is done.

Right-hander John Lackey pitched well enough Sunday to end his own winless streak, except he ran into Cole Hamels at a park where he has some strong recent history.

Lackey allowed four runs and six hits in eight innings, but Hamels dominated for eight innings in his first game at Wrigley Field since throwing a no-hitter at the famed ballpark a year ago to help the Texas Rangers beat the Cubs, 4-1.

Lackey’s winless streak reached seven starts, and he is 14-16 in 41 starts against Texas, the team he’s faced most often in his career.

Hamels (10-2) struck out his first six batters. He fanned seven overall and gave up only an unearned run on four hits.

Last summer, the lefty threw a no-hitter and struck out 13 at Wrigley in his final start for Philadelphia. He was then traded to the Rangers.

– The Associated Press time? Yes. Being realistic, no matter how good you are and how well you’ve pitched in the past, there are going to be times you go out and you’re just not at your best.

“It just happened to come in a three-start stretch where I gave up four and five and six (runs), so it didn’t look great. I wasn’t happy with it.

“But from my perspective, I want to continue to do what I’ve been doing in between starts and iron out some things, find the rhythm, find the timing and transition that into the game.”

Arrieta, who hasn’t pitched since July 8 and won’t start again until Tuesday, thinks he has the formula again because of the time off.

Manager Joe Maddon is counting on it.

“From his perspective, he’d just like to get back to where he had been. I think this rest will benefit him. You look at his numbers, they’re pretty darn good.

“I’ve been saying this for a bit, but I know there’s another level to Jake,” Maddon added.

For now, finding the way to reducing walks – and consequently his pitch counts – is a goal.

“I think it’s just being more efficient early in counts,” he said. “I’m not typically a high walk guy, so in a three- or four-start stretch, giving up three-plus walks is not ideal. That just wastes 20 to 25 pitches, and that’s something that gets you out of a game two innings early.

“Being more efficient in counts, minimizing the free passes is what I’m looking forward to doing.”

Reminding himself how to attack the strike zone without “nibbling at the corners” is the mental part to master again, he said.

“We all get into that sometimes where you get two quick outs and next thing you know it’s a 3-0 count (on the next batter).

“Not picking up a ball for four days was exactly what I needed,” he added. “I picked up a ball for the first time in four or five days and threw the best bullpen I have all year.

“We’re still pitching pretty well, and we have guys in the rotation who are pitching really well. We just look to kind of pass the baton to the next guy and let him go out and do his thing. And that’s what I anticipate seeing in the second half.”

Sox outscored 16-1 in series sweep

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Omar Narvaez and Adam Eaton ended the White Sox’s 34-inning scoreless streak with a pair of doubles Sunday.

And that was pretty much the only good news for the Sox from a meek end to a disastrous series out of the All-Star break.

Albert Pujols hit a pair of two-run homers, Jered Weaver pitched seven strong innings and the Los Angeles Angels completed an emphatic three-game sweep of the Sox with an 8-1 victory Sunday.

The Sox have lost six of eight after getting outscored 16-1 during the weekend by the Angels, one of the AL’s worst teams this season.

If the Sox hope to be a player in the

pennant race, they’ll need to hit the reset button quickly on their second half.

Narvaez got his first big league hit in his first at-bat, and he scored the Sox’s first run since July 9 on Eaton’s double moments later in the third inning. The Sox also got a promising big league debut from touted right-hander Carson Fulmer, who pitched two innings of one-hit relief.

Newton’s father, Kevin, stood behind home plate as the two waited on the field. Holding his phone up to capture the scene, his lips began to quiver. In a world that has been plagued by violent headlines recently, he was overcome with the humanity of the moment.

“There’s a lot of ugly going on in the world,” he said. “There needs to be a whole lot more of this.

A graduate of Rochelle, Byrd was sick for four days in 2014 and was diagnosed with a sinus infection. When the sickness stayed, he got a blood test in Rochelle, which revealed his white blood cells were low. Spending a week in the hospital in Rockford, more tests showed he had acute myeloid leukemia.

“It was a shock that I had cancer, but I tried to stay positive,” Byrd said. “They say that’s half the battle – positivity.”

Newton, 35, originally had signed up to be a part of the list of potential donors after a routine cheek swab five years ago with Deutsche Knochenmarkspenderdatei (DKMS), an international nonprofit that looks to set up matches to fight blood cancer.

“I knew it was a long shot, but I knew I’d be there if I was needed,” said Newton, who grew up in Indiana and lives in Brentwood, Tennessee.

DKMS has a registry of 27 million potential donors worldwide, according to spokesman Jack Kirkland. Sorting through all of the genetic factors needed for a match, only two came up for Byrd – and only one with a perfect 10 out of 10.

“It’s like finding a needle in a haystack,” Kirkland said. “Fortunately, the needle was there and we found it quickly and it saved Josh’s life and set up this fateful meeting and going down onto Wrigley Field.”

By law, Byrd and Newton were not allowed to meet each other for at least a year after his surgery in February 2014. Through a misunderstanding because DKMS is based out of Germany, Byrd initially thought Newton was German, he laughed.

Forced to write anonymous letters back and forth in the year after the transplant, they learned they had plenty in common – including a love for the Cubs, and the two also liked the TV show “Dr. Who,” joking that David Tennant is their favorite actor to portray the iconic character.

However, their bond lies on more substantial matters than baseball and TV. Byrd, who still needs to go to the doctor every six weeks for checkups, said the only reason he was smiling and laughing on the grass of Wrigley Field was the selflessness of Newton.

“It makes you realize we should all aspire to donate if we can,” she said in the stands Saturday.

“Because there’s a lot of sick people out there that need our help.”

They recognize and respect excellence in their profession.

And they share that admiration when they can, as Cubs star Jake Arrieta did last week in San Diego with his National League counterparts.

“I talked to a lot of the guys.

Pretty much every one of them expressed how much they loved watching me throw, how much appreciation they have for what I was able to do last Jake Arrieta year and even this year. The outreach is pretty cool, and it’s reciprocated from me.

“Obviously, (Clayton) Kershaw, (Madison) Bumgarner, Jose Fernandez, guys you play against a lot you really like to watch, and experiencing that week with them together was cool because we got to talk about things.”

The better part of the week was that Arrieta didn’t pitch – and being part of the All-Star honors without having to throw was exactly the “medicine” the Cy Young Award recipient believes he needed.

It’s not that anything is “wrong,” Arrieta repeated. But he knows his most recent starts have not matched the compelling stretch of performances he had from last July to the first months of this year.

Not that any pitcher could continue on the pace he was on.

LOUDON, N.H. – Matt Kenseth was always near the front of the pack. He stalked the leaders and waited for contenders to wilt.

Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. faded down the stretch. So did Denny Hamlin.

It almost seemed like a repeat scenario for Kenseth.

Just as he did last fall on the same track where Kevin Harvick’s lead evaporated when he Matt Kenseth ran out of fuel, Kenseth pounced. He pulled away down the stretch to win the Sprint Cup race Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Truex and Busch each led more than 120 laps before faltering in the final 75 laps, paving the way for Kenseth to win for the second time this season.

Kenseth also won the New Hampshire race last September. He has 38th career victories.

“Last fall, we squeaked one out, a little more fuel than Kevin and a little different strategy, but not quite as good a car,” Kenseth said. “Today, I felt like we had the best car.”

NASCAR said Kenseth’s No. 20 Toyota failed the post-race laser inspection station and will be brought to the research and development center in Concord, North Carolina, for more evaluation. The penalty for that kind of failure traditionally has been a 15-point penalty. But this was the first time a race winner was busted since the lasers were instituted in 2013.

Tony Stewart finished second and strengthened his spot inside the top 30 in the points standings. Stewart has a win this season and needs to secure a spot in the top 30 in points to clinch a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

He inched from 30th to 28th in points.

Joey Logano was third, followed by Harvick and Greg Biffle.

Alex Bowman had a solid day ruined when he hit the wall late and finished 26th driving for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt was sidelined because he suffered from symptoms of a concussion.

Clues help diagnose anorexia Dear Dr. K: I’m worried about my 15-year-old daughter. She eats like a bird.

She is very thin, but thinks she is fat.

I’d like to think this is just a phase some teenagers go through, but could she have anorexia nervosa?

Dear Reader: As with most illnesses, there is not a magic dividing line between having anorexia and not. In fact, there’s a big gray zone where people don’t meet the criteria for a disease, yet they’re not normal, either. An example is “pre-diabetes.”

Tens of millions of people in the United States have blood sugar levels that are not high enough to be called diabetes, but also aren’t normal. It’s important to recognize them, because such people have a higher risk for developing diabetes in the future.

It’s the same with anorexia. People in the middle may meet some criteria for anorexia. They don’t have an officially recognized eating disorder, yet they don’t have a healthy relationship with food, either. Many of these people have what a Harvard Medical School colleague calls “almost anorexia.” It sounds as though your daughter may fit this description.

My colleague Dr. Jennifer Thomas, with Jenni Schaefer, has written an informative book on this topic called “Almost Anorexic: Is My (Or My Loved One’s) Relationship With Food a Problem?”

What causes anorexia? We don’t know.

Some psychiatrists have considered it a psychiatric disorder, strongly influenced by social pressures that equate beauty with thinness. I suspect it is predominantly a disorder of brain chemistry.

Could this just be a “phase” in your daughter’s turbulent teenage life? It’s common for teens to worry about their weight and appearance. But consider the following red flags that increase the likeli-

hood your daughter has what Dr. Thomas calls “almost anorexia” or even full-scale anorexia: • Does your daughter have drastic intentional weight loss or frequent weight changes?

• Does she follow rigid dietary rules, such as eating only at specific times or eating only a specific number of calories?

And if she breaks these self-imposed rules, does she feel extremely guilty?

• Does your daughter occasionally force herself to vomit or use laxatives inappropriately? Does she sometimes exercise excessively to burn off the calories she just consumed?

• You’ve indicated your daughter has a negative body image: She thinks she’s fat, even though she’s thin. Is that affecting how she lives her life? For example, is she reluctant to go swimming with friends because she is afraid to wear a swimsuit in public?

If you suspect your daughter may have – or almost have – anorexia, speak to her doctor. Indeed, her doctor may refer her to an anorexia specialist to decide whether she has anorexia, or is at risk for becoming anorexic. If so, now is the time to take steps to prevent it from developing. Eating disorders can cause serious medical problems, and in the most extreme cases, even death.

DEAR ABBY With summer here, many Jeanne families will do Phillips at least some traveling, which involves spending significant amounts of time in the family car or truck. I’d like to remind your readers it is now illegal in many states to leave a child, a disabled person or a pet unattended in a vehicle for any length of time. The reason is temperatures inside a vehicle – especially with the windows rolled up – can rise to dangerous, even deadly, levels very quickly.

Tests by the National Weather Service have shown when it’s 80 degrees F. outside, the interior of a vehicle with the windows rolled up, or just cracked open, can reach 123 degrees F. within 60 minutes. Such temperatures can induce heat exhaustion, or worse, heat stroke, within a very short time, and quickly kill a child, a pet or a disabled person.

Abby, I urge you in the strongest terms to help spread this vital warning and prevent needless tragedies of this kind. I was shocked when I read a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stating an average of 38 children have died in hot cars each year since 1998. More than 70 percent of those deaths were children younger than 2 years of age. How tragic.

Dear Abby: My family recently moved to a new state and was blessed to find a wonderful new church to attend near our home. There’s only one drawback. We have a young toddler, so we sit in the cry room during Mass. At our previous church, the cry room was a place for us to practice church etiquette with our son so we someday could sit with the rest of the congregation without disturbing the Mass.

The culture at this church is different; the cry room seems more like a playroom. Seeing all the other children running around makes keeping my toddler sitting in the pew nearly impossible (think major meltdowns). If we allow him to play with the other children, we spend the Mass feeling like we’ve failed as Christian parents. The result is neither my husband nor I has felt fully present at a Mass in months. Do you have any suggestions for how to reconcile this issue? – Missing Mass Dear Missing Mass: From where I sit, you’re not only being overly hard on yourselves as parents, but also your small child. Please discuss this with the priest at your new church.

Allowing your child to be a child isn’t “bad Christian parenting.” Few toddlers have a long enough attention span to sit through Mass. The cry room is designed to be like a playground so the children will learn to enjoy going there every Sunday and want to keep coming back until they’re old enough for Sunday school.

And that’s a good thing.

North’s two-diamond rebid was forcing one round, promising at least game-invitational values. South, with stoppers in the unbid heart suit, was right to bid two no-trump, despite how weird that looked with his void.

North could not have four hearts, because she would have rebid two hearts, not two diamonds.

In three no-trump, South started with seven top tricks: two hearts and five diamonds. He led the club king at trick two, intent on establishing two winners there. East played low, so South continued with the club queen. When East took that trick, he had no good play. Eventually, South won 10 tricks.
