POLL Daisy praise for Waterman police YESTERDAY’S The girls of Waterman Girl Scout Daisy Troop 1267 left a nice surprise for members of their local police department this week.

The girls were talking about authority figures at their meeting Monday, and in order to earn their respect for authority badges, four of the Daisies – Amisa Calderon, Ashleigh Dovonan, Jade Miller and Evangeline Pasetti – decided to make supportive signs outside the Waterman Police Station. Daisies are the youngest Girl Scouts, typically in kindergarten and first grade.

“The girls were just so excited, they were talking about policemen during the meetings, they were talking about who is authority, different people they should respect besides their parents,” troop leader Vicky Calderon said. ”We told them they could choose a person who they could make the signs for, and they chose a police officer.”

The troop meets at the Waterman Community Center, barely a block from the police station at 215 W. Adams St. So after the meeting, the girls and their parents went to the police station. No one was in when they visited, so the girls took photos of themselves with their signs, and then left them outside the station. They put tape on them so they wouldn’t blow away.

“When we came in, it was a very nice surprise,” Waterman Police Chief Chuck Breese said.

Breese has led the department of three full-time and three part-time officers for 16 years, and he’s lived in Waterman for 35 years.

Policing small-town America is not without danger, but it’s different from in a larger city, Breese said.

“We still have the same concerns, but we’re a little different on what we do,” Breese said.

“I still go and answer calls and chase dogs and squirrels and roosters.

“We had a rooster the other day that was loose.”

DeKALB – 3M’s annual Closest to the Pin Contest this year will raise money to support the Barb Food Mart, a school-based food pantry serving the families of DeKalb School District 428.

The 23rd annual Closest to the Pin Contest will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the main 3M facility, 3050 Corporate Drive, DeKalb, according to a news release. The event features an about

“He was waking up the neighborhood,” Breese said. “He was walking from house to house looking for food.”

After a couple of days, Breese tracked down the bird’s owners. Roosters actually can do a fair bit of damage if you don’t know how to handle them, so police left capturing the bird to the owners.

“They went down and they caught him,” Breese said “They had big gloves on.”

It’s not as though there’s never any crime in Waterman. Last month, Waterman police arrested a DeKalb man accused of depositing bad checks at the First State Bank branch.

But one mystery Waterman Sgt. Jason Swanson was able to get to the bottom of pretty quickly was who had left the signs, which had messages such as “you’re my hero” and “thank you for keeping us safe.”

3 women bicycling across U.S. to raise money for Shabbona-area trail

SHABBONA – Wendy Schnorr, Linda Novotny and Novotny’s daughter, Vicki, have had an exciting summer so far: They went camping, made friends and were able to get a tan – as they bicycled across seven states.

The women are bicycling across the country to raise money to help build the Shabbona Pathway.

The women have completed more than two-thirds of their cross-country trip. They have bicycled 2,450 miles and have about 1,000 miles left. They left Astoria, Oregon, on June 5 and plan to reach Washington, D.C., at the beginning of August.

On Thursday, the three women were welcomed back to their hometown with two firetrucks, more than 20 bicyclists and a celebration at Water Tower Park.

The women arrived in Shabbona at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and spent two days at home. They were leaving at 8 a.m. Friday, heading east to complete their adventure.

The women bicycle an average of 60 miles a day, often through remote and rural areas. For the first 700 miles of the trip, they followed the Adventure Cycling Association’s Lewis and Clark Bicycle Trail, but created their own route so they would pass a town with services every 20 miles.

“Some days, we’ve biked 40 miles without seeing anything,” Vicki Novotny said. “We once biked 67 miles in a day, and the only building we came across was a post office. We asked the lady there for some water, and she told us that she had to bring her own water from home every day. She still was able to give us a cup of coffee and sit and talk with us for a while.”

Linda Novotny said that her favorite aspects of the trip are the overall kindness of the people she has met and not knowing what the day will bring.

“On the very first day, Vicki was injured when her bike wheel became stuck in gaps between boardwalk planks,” Linda Novotny said. “Wendy rode ahead two miles until she found a woman pulling weeds in her garden.

The stranger, Katie, was able to give us ice, take us to urgent care and let us stay at her place for the night. The trip hasn’t been easy, but one of my favorite things has been meeting the people.”

They are raising money for the Shabbona Pathway, a not-for-profit group established to build a multiuse trail in and around Shabbona allowing both local residents and visitors to move safely from town to Shabbona Lake State Park. and the internet, and they have been blogging.

“Wendy is very athletic and has been independent all her life,” said Wendy’s mother, Marilyn Ward of DeKalb. “I know that she didn’t get it from me. I knit, I don’t ride bikes. I’m proud of her. She’s doing it for a great cause, and when she puts her mind to something, she gets it done.”

The women will use the money they raise to help build the Shabbona Pathway, a 3.1-mile multiuse community trail connecting downtown Shabbona to more than 30 miles of trails within Shabbona Lake State Park. The path also would connect to Indian Creek schools, Chief Shabbona Forest Preserve, Indian Oaks Country Club and Lions Park.

The project will cost about $900,000.

After money raised through grants, $90,000 is needed. The project was notified last week that it has been awarded

a $10,000 grant from ComEd Green Region Program. The project’s committee has raised $35,000, including donations from local benefactors and a $10,000 donation from the DeKalb County Forest Preserve.

“The pathway has brought the community and five taxing parties together: the school, the county, the state park, the fire department and the village,” said the project’s president, Dan Nolan.

“I appreciate all that the women are doing, and I’m glad that they got here safely. They’re three ladies on a bike, without support, often without cell service or internet connection. It’s a gutsy move, and I don’t know if I could do it.”

The women have been distributing cards with links to information about the Shabbona Pathway, telling their story to people they meet. Strangers have been willing to give money to help the project, some donating money or letting the women stay in their house

or camp in their backyard.

“We’ve always been taught to be wary of strangers, but I’m happy to report that there are more good people than bad people in the world,” Wendy Schnorr said. “People have always been willing to help, even people who don’t have a lot take a chance on us.”

Although the cross country journey has been difficult, all three women said that they would make the trip again: Linda Novotny said she would want to try a different route; Schnorr said she would want to have a support vehicle; and Vicki Novotny said that she hopes to make the trip when she has children.

“It’s been a great bonding experience,” Vicki Novotny said. “It’s rough, but not as rough as I thought it would be. I feel accomplished and proud at the end of every day. I’d love to do this with my own kids one day and make it a generational experience. I’d definitely do it again.”

Kish YMCA lessons at Camp Power help kids learn to swim

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – This summer, about 74 children enrolled in Camp Power at University Village are being offered swimming lessons, an activity the kids are likely to see as fun, but one that Kishwaukee Family YMCA officials said is a lifelong skill that could be a lifesaver.

The eight weeks of swimming lessons are made possible through a grant from the national YMCA. They aren’t designed to prepare the campers for Olympic competition, but more instead to acclimate some to the water and teach others basic skills that can help keep them from drowning, said Lesley Feyerherm, youth development director for the Kish Y. “It’s the same grant that has allowed us to provide swim lessons in previous years,” Feyerherm said. “The goal is to get kiddos who might not otherwise have access to swim lessons ... in the water and starting to learn the basics of swimming.”

The grant covers 50 children, so the local YMCA is picking up any additional costs.

LaShaunda Kimmons said she is grateful her children have an opportunity to have swimming lessons. This is the family’s first year being involved with Camp Power and the first time getting formal swim instruction.

“It’s nice because where we came from, we really couldn’t do it,” said Kimmons, who moved to University Village after living in Chicago. “I love it.”

Her daughter, Janiyah, 9, was a bit skittish at first about getting in the pool for her first lesson. But she loves the water, she said, and was open to learning.

“When I started to swim a little bit, I was scared because I can’t hold my breath under water that long,” she said, smiling.

The youngster, who is headed to fourth grade at Lincoln Elementary, and her mother praise the YMCA for offering the lessons and making them available right in the families’ backyard.

More-advanced swimmers are able to jump into the pool and even attempt to swim short distances as instructors watch.

The CDC reports that most kids whose parents don’t how to swim usually aren’t swimmers themselves.

However, some University Village parents feel that each generation is wading out into the waters with a bit more skill and confidence – especially after getting instruction from places such as the Kish Y.

Sycamore teen charged in burglary spree faces new charges DAILY CHRONICLE

Edward Elliot Beard died July 8, 2016, in Mesa, AZ. Born in Maryville, TN, on Nov. 5, 1954, he graduated from DeKalb Senior High School in 1974 and earned a bachelor of science degree in parks and recreation in 1978 from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. Ed was a big-hearted, generous, and selfless man who loved the wilderness areas of the United States that have remained untouched by mankind. He loved the mountains, lakes, rivers, and streams – particularly in Arizona, which he made his home for the past 40 years.

From an early age, he developed an unparalleled skill in fishing, from Lake Michigan to Lake Geneva, WI, to the Kishwaukee River in Illinois, to Canyon Lake in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. At fishing, he was a pro. He was overjoyed to learn of the Kishwaukee River Environmental Clean Up. He will be sorely missed.

Survivors include his fraternal twin brother Andrew (Jeanne) Beard of Sycamore; and his sister, Caroline Beard Pritzlaff of Milwaukee; nephews, Joseph (Kelley) Beard, Charles (Erica) Beard and John Henry Pritzlaff; two great-nieces, Winter and Isabelle Beard; and his beloved Siamese tomcat, Sita.

“We’re going to grow the foundation.

We’re going to connect with all the donors – present, past and future – that we’d like to work with,” Nicklas said.

It is unclear if the new position with the foundation will change any terms of his appointment, including the pay.

“The president’s wish is that the foundation board and the college board collaborate on a strategic plan for the college and also, more specifically for the foundation; and that we’re working together, all pulling in the same direction,” he said.

DeKALB – A collaboration of community organizations, including the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, is calling for donations for its annual back-to-school event.

The church and its affilates will host the Back to School Bash next month in Welsh Park. Last year, 600 packpacks filled with school supplies were given away to the more than 100 families who attended, according to event coordinator Treveda Redmond.

“This event is intended to promote

unity in the community and exemplify the importance of living a healthy lifestyle,” she said.

Organizers are looking to collect enough school supplies – such as notebooks, folders, glue sticks, crayons, pencils and more, to fill 1,000 backpacks this year. They also are looking for food and paper good products for the giveaway event, as well as monetary donations.

Marshall Hayes had been head of the college’s foundation since his 2007 hire.

He tendered a two-sentence resignation June 24 to Kishwaukee College President Laurie Borowicz, effective the same day. His annual contract would have expired June 30.

College officials offered no reason for Hayes’ abrupt resignation. Diane Johnson, the foundation’s associate director, resigned the same month, although there was no severance agreement on the agenda for her. Borowicz and Board of Trustees Chairman Bob Johnson said the foundation is simply moving forward.

“Marshall resigned,” Johnson said.

“There’s really not a lot to talk about.”

The foundation, which controls assets of more than $6 million, helps provide student scholarships and fundraise for the college. Last school year, the foundation awarded $265,172 in scholarships to 231 students, according to college data.

Trustees agreed to a deal at their meeting Tuesday that gives Hayes a payout of $47,727 – equal to six months of his $93,447 annual salary. Also, he will get a lump-sum payment of $8,286 for six months of insurance premiums, according to the resignation agreement obtained by the Daily Chronicle.

In total, the college has agreed to pay Hayes $62,842 – minus taxes on the salary – by July 31. The amount also includes $6,829 for unused vacation time. Also in-

news@daily-chronicle.com AURORA – Former Kishwaukee College President Tom Choice has a new job.

Choice, who left his post at the Malta community college at the end of 2015, has been appointed Rosary High School’s first president.

He will begin his new job Aug. 1, according to a news release.

Located in Aurora, Rosary is an all-girls high school. It serves about 330 students.

The decision to hire Choice was made by the high school’s board of directors and its member board.

Choice, who has a doctorate in higher education administration, brings 35 years of experience from his varied educational leadership positions, the release stated.

Choice served on the board, but never Tom Choice considered himself a candidate for the new position. However, after being approached about the opportunity, he decided it was a good fit.

“I love Rosary, I love everything it stands for,” Choice said Thursday. “I was in a position to do it, and I want to see the school continue to be suc-

cessful.”

Choice began his career as an English teacher at Marmion Academy in Aurora in the early 1980s and progressed over the years, most recently serving as president of Kishwaukee College in Malta from 2007 to his retirement in December 2015. Choice served as chairman of Rosary’s board of directors from 2015 to 2016, according to the release.

His wife, Susan, and two daughters, Meghan and Rachel, are Rosary alumnae.

His son, Matthew, graduated from Marmion.

Thomas Schnitzler, 35, of the 100 block of Clover Avenue, Cortland, is charged with domestic battery and aggravated domestic battery. The latter typically is punishable by three to seven years in prison.

Explosion suspected in fire at Sandwich home

SANDWICH – A propane explosion may have caused a fire at a Sandwich home.

DeKalb County sheriff’s deputies and Sandwich firefighters were called to 3870 W. Sandwich Road shortly after 4 p.m.

Wednesday on a report of a fire after an explosion in the basement of the home, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

He is due back in court Aug. 11.

SPRINGFIELD – The state of Illinois’ spending will outstrip what it brings in by nearly $8 billion this year despite a stopgap budget agreement last month, according to a government analysis first obtained Thursday by The Associated Press.

The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability reviewed the budget deal that lawmakers and Gov. Bruce Rauner approved in June on the brink of the new fiscal year, which began this month, at the behest of Republican Rep. David David McSweeney McSweeney.

The report, provided to AP in advance of general release later Thursday, found that the state will spend $39.6 billion – including $3 billion in obligations that were not addressed in the six-month stop-gap budget agreed to by Democrats who control the Legislature and Rauner – but will bring in only $31.8 billion.

Chicago’s Wrigley Field is site of active-shooter drill

CHICAGO – Chicago first responders plan to simulate a large-scale active-shooter incident at Wrigley Field.

Thursday’s emergency response exercise will run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include Chicago firefighters and police officers, the city’s emergency office and the Cubs. Police said the drill was planned months ago to coincide with Major League Baseball’s All-Star break this week. Cubs spokesman Julian Green said the team is happy to partner with law enforcement on the exercise to ensure a safe and secure environment.

Summer enrollment drops at U of Illinois 1st time in 6 years

URBANA – For the first time in six years, summer enrollment at the University of Illinois’ largest campus is down.

The News-Gazette in Champaign reported that enrollment at the Urbana-Champaign campus this summer is 11,214 – down by 470 students, or about 4 percent.

Summer enrollment had climbed every year since 2011, when it was 9,258.

In-state enrollment this summer is 5,616, while 3,407 foreign students are on campus.

University officials could not be reached immediately for comment.

SIU planning to remove algae from Campus Lake

CARBONDALE – Southern Illinois University plans to remove toxic algae from Campus Lake in hopes people can get back on the water next year.

The Southern Illinoisan reported that officials at the Carbondale university have closed the lake for the past three summers because of blue-green algae.

People who have contact with the water can develop skin rashes. The algae also contribute to environmental problems.

Kevin Bame, who is SIUC’s vice chancellor for administration and business, said that after consulting with faculty and other experts, the university plans to drop the water level of Campus Lake. That will expose about 20 acres of shoreline, allowing the algae to dry out. It then will be disposed of or pulled to a deeper end of the lake.

The process is expected to cost around $300,000.

Enrollees of failed Ill. insurance co-op face high costs

CHICAGO – Officials said Illinois residents with Land of Lincoln Health insurance won’t be able to transfer what they’ve paid in copays and deductibles to new plans after the failing nonprofit company goes out of business.

Illinois Department of Insurance spokesman Michael Batkins told The Associated Press that the company’s 49,000 customers likely will have to start with a new deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. He said that was why the department advocated for the federal government to offset the payment the company owed.

“This could be very disruptive for people who either liked Land of Lincoln’s provider network or had met their deductible and other out-of-pocket limits,” said Stephani Becker, a health care policy analyst at the Chicago-based Sargent Shriver

Trump had planned to hold his first event with his yet-to-be-named running mate Friday morning in New York. He announced the change of plans Thursday evening on Twitter.

The stunning announcement raised questions about the status of Trump’s selection process. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence had emerged as a late favorite for the job, although Trump said he had not finalized the pick and advisers cautioned he could change his mind.

“I haven’t made my final, final decision,” Trump said on Fox News Channel. He said that while his running mate selection would “absolutely not” be changed by the France attack, he did not feel it was appropriate to hold a news conference in its aftermath.

Dozens of people were killed late Thursday in the French resort city of Nice when a truck drove onto a sidewalk and plowed through a crowd of Bastille Day revelers who’d gathered to watch fireworks.

In addition to Pence, Trump’s short list included former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, according to people familiar with the candidate’s thinking.

After spending much of Thursday in Indianapolis, Pence flew to New York late in the day, according to a Republican familiar with the process. Indianapolis TV station WTHR posted a video showing Pence arriving at a private airport outside New York early Thursday evening.

Trump did not say when he planned to announce his running mate. He’s up against a clock: The Republican convention kicks off Monday in Cleveland.

Top party officials already are in Cleveland, grappling with a rules fight that increased the odds of nationally televised clashes at the convention. Talks broke down Thursday between party leaders and recalcitrant conservatives seeking to “unbind” convention delegates and let them back any presidential candidate they’d like.

Conservatives hope that would lead to delegates blocking Trump’s nomination.

The convention and vice presidential announcement give Trump back-to-back opportunities to reassure Americans – as well as leaders within his own party – that he’s prepared for the presidency.

He has influential allies in Trump’s inner circle. But some of Trump’s children, who have been closely advising their father, are said to favor different candidates.

Campaign chairman Paul Manafort was among those urging caution in assuming any decision Thursday, saying on Twitter that Trump’s choice “will be made in the near future.”

As the day began, it appeared the decision would come quickly. Gingrich, the fiery Republican who helped define the political battles of the 1990s, told The Associated Press that Trump was supposed to let him know something in the afternoon. But by early evening, Gingrich told the AP he had heard nothing from Trump or others in the campaign.

Other Republicans with knowledge of the process said there had been no calls to Pence or Christie, either.

The top contenders have been vetted by a top Washington lawyer and all have spent time with Trump in recent days. But the final decision rests with the candidate, who is known for making decisions more on instinct than other factors – and for sometimes changing his mind.

Trump was in California on Thursday for several fundraisers. His schedule put him at a distance from many of his closest advisers, including Manafort and his three oldest children.

Pence is running for re-election, but Indiana law prevents him from seeking two offices at once. He faces a Friday deadline to withdraw from the governor’s race.

President Francois Hollande said in a televised statement that all of France was under an “Islamist terrorist threat” and extended by three months a state of emergency that has been in place since the November attacks that killed 130 in Paris was to end July 26. Hollande said he was calling a defense council meeting Friday that brings together defense, interior and other key ministers, then heading to Nice. European Council president Donald Tusk said it was a “tragic paradox” that the victims of the attack in Nice were celebrating “liberty, equality and fraternity” – France’s motto – on the country’s national day.

Writing online, Nice Matin journalist Damien Allemand, who was at the waterside, said the fireworks display had finished and the crowd had got up to leave when they heard a noise and cries.

“A fraction of a second later, an enormous white truck came along at a crazy speed, turning the wheel to mow down the maximum number of people,” he said.

“I saw bodies flying like bowling pins along its route. Heard noises, cries that I will never forget.”

NICE, France – A truck loaded with weapons and hand grenades drove onto a sidewalk for more than a mile, plowing through Bastille Day revelers who had gathered to watch fireworks in the French resort city of Nice late Thursday. At least 80 people were killed before police killed the driver, authorities said.

Nice prosecutor Jean-Michel Pretre described a horrific scene, with bodies strewn along the road, and Sylvie Toffin, a press officer with the local prefecture, said the truck ran over people on a “long trip” down the sidewalk near Nice’s Palais de la Mediterranee, a building that fronts the beach.

Wassim Bouhlel, a Nice native who spoke to the AP nearby, said that he saw a truck drive into the crowd.

“There was carnage on the road,” he said. “Bodies everywhere.” He said the driver emerged with a gun and started shooting.

France’s Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said 80 people were killed, including children, and 18 were in critical condition, and the Paris prosecutor’s office announced an investigation for “murder, attempted murder in an organized group linked to a terrorist enterprise.”

“We are in a war with terrorists who want to strike us at any price and in a very violent way,” Cazeneuve said.

The ranking politician of the Alpes-Maritime department that includes Nice said the truck plowed into the crowd over a distance of 1.2 miles.

Many of those on the ground were in shorts and other summer clothing.

Eric Ciotti said on BFM TV that police killed the driver “apparently after an exchange of gunfire.”

The president of the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur regional council, which includes Nice, said the truck was loaded with arms and grenades. Christian Estrosi told BFM TV that “the driver fired on the crowd, according to the police who killed him.”

Images being broadcast across French media showed revelers running for their lives down Nice’s palm treelined Promenade des Anglais, the famous seaside boulevard named for the English aristocrats who proposed its construction in the 19th century.

Video footage showed men and women – one or two pushing strollers – racing to get away from the scenes. And, in what appeared to be evidence of a gun battle, photos showed a truck with at least half a dozen bullet holes punched through its windshield.

It was not immediately clear who would have been behind an attack, but France has recently seen a spate of dra-

Welcome words spoken at Dallas police memorial Dallas’ response in the days since five of our police officers were murdered demonstrates that our city can help show America how to heal its divisions over race and ease tensions over police violence.

That was the message President Barack Obama delivered Tuesday, and we couldn’t agree more.

The shooter, Obama noted, was motivated by racial hatred, but the white officers he killed had been motivated by love and service. Dallas has responded with more love and unity in the days since.

That’s a recipe for hope, the president said.

“We are not as divided as we seem,” he said. “And I know that because I know America. I know how far we’ve come against impossible odds. ... And I know it because of what we’ve seen here in Dallas.”

We weren’t waiting for the president to tell us we’ve done what is right. We feel it in our bones, and see it in our neighbors’ faces. But the words are welcome anyway.

The truth is, even before any of Tuesday’s speeches, the service at the Meyerson Symphony Center was poignant and pitch-perfect. It was an appropriate capstone for five painful days that, despite our tears, have showed Dallas at its best.

Inside, the choir music was soothing and somber. The building itself, one of Dallas’ finest, was transcendent. The large, diverse crowd was still and solemn.

Outside, a soft breeze blowing under a blue sky seemed to somehow gentle the punishing summer heat. Demonstrators were all around, but their signs called for love to triumph over hate. Officers from Grand Prairie and Arlington stood vigil.

And when the service began, Mayor Mike Rawlings spoke for all of us when, with two presidents, a vice president, and their wives, seated to his right, he welcomed a nation watching on live television. “Our pain is your pain,” he said.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown’s Stevie Wonder moment will not soon be forgotten, nor the cheers it brought. Sen. John Cornyn praised our fallen officers powerfully, and still called on all of us to have needed conversations about race and criminal justice.

Former President George W. Bush spoke for us when he told America that we have lost five members of our family. He reminded us, too, that Americans can dream their biggest dreams when men and women in uniform stand guard. He added, gently, that those guardians do best when they are trusted, trained and accountable.

But it was Obama who said the things that most needed saying.

Words, he warned, are inadequate.

“I’ve seen how inadequate words can be in bringing about lasting change. I’ve seen how inadequate my own words have been,” he said.

He went beyond words, however, when he urged us to confront the racism we too often ignore. It is real, and the protesters such as the ones in our streets last Thursday speak from places of pain and desperation. We must hear them even as we honor our police.

That’s what Dallas can do, and the good news is we’ve already begun.

As Obama said: “Weeping may endure for a night, but I’m convinced joy comes in the morning.”

So, yeah, I’m worried about my city.

Not because we don’t know how to behave or how to host a party.

Just last month, we proved we’re really good at both, after an estimated 1.3 million people jammed just about every inch of downtown Cleveland to celebrate the homecoming of our NBA champions, the Cavaliers.

It was sunny and increasingly hot as most of us stood shoulder to shoulder with sweaty strangers for hours that day.

We had our moments.

I was standing with my friends, Sue and Bill, when a group of men in their late 20s and early 30s began taunting a couple of mothers who stood with young children on a public bench around the staging area, blocking our view.

At first, the men just yelled for them to step down, but when the women refused, the attacks grew more personal.

“You’re unfit mothers!” they yelled – but not for long. When one of the men hurled the B-word, several of us asked all of them to dial it back.

The men bristled at the reprimand, but they soon left, and everyone else managed to keep things

light, even as our feet ached and our faces burned.

I’ve thought of that moment a lot in the days since.

We were mostly sports fans, I understand, but we were a lot more than that, too.

We were a cityful of people who knew the country’s eyes were on us, and we knew how to behave. The headlines told the story of an entire city of people happy to spend countless hours crammed together in the heat.

That’s who we were, because that is who we are.

I don’t know what’s going to happen in our city when Trump gets here for the Republican convention.

What I do know is the collective heart of the people who are welcoming more than 50,000 visitors to our city.

Our goal is always the same: You arrive as strangers, but you leave as friends.

That’s who we are, and there’s nothing about Donald Trump that ever could change us.

Tobacco products lethal, but they are still legal There’s no question that raising taxes on tobacco products is an effective way of getting people to quit – or never start – smoking or chewing.

For the first time in nearly a decade, cigarette sales in Colorado increased last year.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported in February that cigarette sales were up 1.1 million packs from the previous year, reversing a decline that began in 2004.

That year, voters approved a ballot measure to raise taxes on tobacco

products.

Before the new tax went into effect, cigarette sales were about 300 million packs a year. Today they’re down by more than a third to 194.4 million packs.

There’s an effort underway to raise cigarette taxes by $1.75 a pack – a three-fold increase. A group called Campaign for a Healthy Colorado is collecting signatures for a ballot measure to raise taxes on tobacco products with the express aim of decreasing smoking.

It sounds good.

Who, besides smokers and Big Tobacco, would be opposed to such a measure? Especially if they figure that it won’t affect their pocketbooks.

Never mind that taxing tobacco products singles out smokers and chewers for contributing $1.8 billion a year in health care and related expenses in Colorado. They become convenient targets for containing health care costs. But where are the tax increases on junk food, sodas, liquor and hand-held devices with proceeds to fund health and safety?

Any of these arguably contribute to the country’s health care costs.

Moreover, as the tobacco lobby is certain to point out, low-income people are more likely to smoke than those who don’t live in poverty. A tax increase hurts them disproportionately.

We agree that decreasing smoking is an important goal. But let’s be certain that there aren’t unintended budgetary consequences hidden inside a nanny-state solution. Tobacco may be lethal, but it’s still legal.

For weeks now, many of us who live in Cleveland have been fielding questions about how safe we feel about the Republican National Convention’s coming to our city next week.

What most of them really are asking is whether we’re worried about Donald Trump and the trouble his brand of campaigning may bring with him.

It’s a reasonable question – and one that I’ve been answering with an increasingly measured tone.

Trump won his party’s primary by preaching racism, xenophobia and misogyny. Only a fool believes that it begins and ends with his rhetoric.

I don’t think all of Trump’s supporters are awful people; but as The New York Times’ Nick Confessore reported just this week, the worst among them now feel they’ve got permission to hate out loud whomever they want.

Out of a partnership with the Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation, the DeKalb County Community Foundation reports that $125,100 in Wurlitzer Foundation grants were awarded this spring. A total of 28 nonprofits and community organizations across the Midwest received support for their involvement in music and music education.

The partnership between the Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation and the DeKalb County Community Foundation began in 2012, when the Wurlitzer Foundation Board of Directors established a donor-advised fund within the DCCF. Since 2012,

the Wurlitzer Foundation Fund has awarded $818,145 in music grants across the United States. Of this amount, $147,945 has stayed local and been awarded to organizations within DeKalb County.

Fall 2016 Wurlitzer Foundation grant applications are now available online. Applications are due by midnight March 1 and Sept. 1 of each year. All applications are reviewed by the Wurlitzer Foundation Fund Board of Advisors, and funding support is granted based on criteria met and amount requested. DeKalb seventh-grader wins national freestyle championship

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Down 8-0, Bradley Gillum thought it was over. But that doesn’t mean he gave up.

The soon-to-be seventh-grader at Clinton-Rosette trailed Andrew Jensen of Utah in the championship match of the 112-pound class of the novice division at the USA Wrestling Freestyle Championships on July 8 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, but battled back for a win and a national championship.

“I didn’t even realize that I won,”

Gillum said. “I was just shocked. I didn’t know what was happening until a coach was pointing and yelling, ‘You won! You won! You won!’ ” A tech fall would have kicked in once Jensen’s lead grew to 10 points, but Gillum battled back with the match finishing in a 10-10 tie. Gillum won on criteria.

“I thought for sure I was done and I was going to lose,” Gillum said.

“He started going with some sloppy moves.”

Gillum is a part of the Hurricane Wrestling team, on which DeKalb High School varsity coach Sam Hiatt

is a coach. Hiatt said that freestyle differs from folkstyle – the style of wrestling at use at the high school level – mostly around the mat. He said that nearfalls are easier and that makes the scoring a little higher.

Hiatt said Gillum’s style is suited more to freestyle, but Gillum said he prefers folkstyle.

“He loves the sport,” Hiatt said.

“He’s tough. He never gives up. He’s been consistent – he always shows up to practices, offseason workouts. He’s a really tough wrestler.”

Gillum started his run to the national title with a win in the Illinois

state tournament, then won the Northern Plains regional tourney to earn his spot in the national championship.

“A lot of people would have just given up,” Hiatt said. “Just to fight back, that says a lot out about him.”

Although Gillum is still two years away from competing for the Barbs, Hiatt said he’s excited about his future.

“He’s still kind of scratching the surface,” Hiatt said. “The exciting part is he’s still got a lot to learn. And he’s still here practicing after winning the national tournament. He was weightlifting the next day.”

Questions about depth behind Miller Training camp

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com After three years of entering training camp with Martellus Bennett, a Pro Bowler and one of the best tight ends in the game, the Bears head to Bourbonnais with Zach Miller leading the group. The similar trend from the Bennett years will follow the Bears to Olivet Nazarene University – there will be a competition for the No. 2 tight end spot.

Three things to watch at the tight end position in training camp: Main man Miller: The 34 catches, 439 yards and five touchdowns helped earn Miller a multiyear contract after a breakout season. Miller, who turns 32 in October, has been a feel-good story in Chicago and is now the No. 1 tight end, a role he’s comfortable playing.

We have to remember Miller was effective playing almost every snap after Bennett went down late last season.

Now we’ll see what role he will play in the offense, as blocking may become a bigger part of his job description.

Training camp and the preseason are where Miller first made his impressions in 2014, so expect to see Jay Cutler connect with Miller often during camp practices. They’ve had a good rapport for years, so camp now is all about see-

Moeaki a factor: We’ll get to the crowded group of players vying to be the No. 2 tight end alongside Miller this season, but we want to focus on Moeaki when it comes to training camp.

The former Wheaton-Warrenville South player was signed after minicamp and will use Bourbonnais as an oppor-

tunity to revive his career. As a rookie in 2010, Moeaki had 556 receiving yards and three scores. He missed 2011 before returning to get 453 yards for the Chiefs in 2012, but since then, Moeaki has only appeared in 19 games with the Bills, Seahawks and Falcons.

He has the most NFL experience of the other Bears tight ends and will be one of the intriguing players to monitor

Finding Miller’s complement: Joining Moeaki in the competition are Rob Housler, Khari Lee, converted defensive lineman Greg Scruggs and undrafted rookie Ben Braunecker. Joe Sommers and Gannon Sinclair round out the tight end room, one that is far from impressive.

Lee has the most experience in the system, playing often last season as a rookie after the Bears traded a draft pick for him. Housler had back-to-back 400-yard seasons with Arizona in 2012-13 but has only 13 catches since.

Scruggs has imposing size but is raw as he switches to the offensive side of the ball.

Braunecker starred at the NFL Scouting Combine with his athleticism, and the Harvard product may turn into a fan favorite if he can step up as a receiving option for Cutler.

Time to give prospects a real chance

mlazerus@suntimes.com In June 2011, the Blackhawks used their two first-round draft picks to select forwards Mark McNeill and Phil Danault. McNeill finally made it to the NHL – for one game – almost five years later, in January 2016. Danault played two games in the 2014-15 season before finally entrenching himself in the NHL this past season.

In the meantime, Brandon Saad and Andrew Shaw – picked in the second and fifth rounds of that same 2011 draft – have won two Stanley Cups in Chicago and earned lengthy and lucrative NHL contracts in Columbus and Montreal.

So this whole prospect thing isn’t an exact science.

Not everybody can be a Saad or a Shaw, each of whom reached the NHL mere months after being drafted. For every meteoric rise, there are countless slow burns – guys who spend years on

the cusp of the NHL without ever fully breaking through. Vinnie Hinostroza will wrap up his fifth Hawks prospect camp Friday. Ryan Hartman of West Dundee will finish his fourth. For Nick Schmaltz and Dylan Sikura, it’s their third.

It’s time to find out if they’re NHL ready.

The Hawks have holes to fill up front this season – lots of them. Andrew Ladd, Shaw, Teuvo Teravainen, Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann are gone. It’s why Schmaltz decided to turn pro. It’s why Hartman thinks he has a real chance to start the season in the NHL. It’s why Hinostroza has been extra focused this camp. There are jobs to be had. And if the Hawks are wise, they’ll give the kids the first crack at them.

It’s time to find out whether Hartman can be the do-it-all agitator Shaw was. It’s time to find out whether Schmaltz and Tyler Motte can bring their dynamic playmaking to the NHL

level. It’s time to find out whether the 5-foot-9 Hinostroza can withstand the punishment he’s going to take around the net. It’s time to find out who’s going to be the next part of the core.

Because it’s not going to be Jordin Tootoo, a 33-year-old veteran known more for his hard fists than his soft hands. It’s probably not going to be Brandon Mashinter, a soon-to-be 28-year-old journeyman. And it’s not going to be a cheap leftover from the July 1 free-agency frenzy (Kris Versteeg, anyone?).

But it might be Schmaltz or Motte.

It might be Hartman or Hinostroza. It might even be McNeill, who is without a contract but is likely to be re-signed.

But the only way to find out for sure is to play them. Not just a game here or there, not just six minutes a night – but actually play them. It might leave Joel Quenneville tearing out his mustache in frustration some nights, but he and Stan Bowman need to give the Hawks’ best young prospects extended audi-

tions at the NHL level, to let them make mistakes and learn from them.

With their core players still locked up and in their prime, and with Brian Campbell and Michal Kempny bolstering the defense, the Hawks enter the 2016-17 season as true Stanley Cup contenders again. But they won’t do anything with 21/2 lines. And they won’t have the salary-cap space to go on a spending spree at the trade deadline.

Even in the brutal Central Division, a playoff spot seems inevitable for the Hawks. So the smart thing to do is to spend the months leading up to April figuring out who’s the next Teravainen, and who’s the next Jeremy Morin; who’s the next Saad, and who’s the next Brandon Pirri; who’s the next Marcus Kruger, and who’s the next Drew LeBlanc. And the only way to do that is to play them, and see what happens – for better or for worse.

Because although we don’t know yet whether the Hawks’ kids are all right, we do know they’re all they’ve got.

TROON, Scotland – Phil Mickelson was 16 feet away from a place in history he wouldn’t have to share with anyone.

Fans watched from a rooftop balcony. Royal Troon members strained to see out the window from the clubhouse behind the 18th green. Jack Nicklaus usually doesn’t watch golf on TV, but he made an exception for this moment.

In 436 majors held over the past 156 years, no one had ever shot 62.

That’s still the case. By a fraction of an inch.

“I want to cry,” Mickelson said.

Mickelson pointed his putter toward the hole and was ready to step into history Thursday in the British Open when his birdie putt turned sharply to the right at the mouth of the hole, just enough to ride the edge around the back of the cup and sit there, teasing him.

“You made a beautiful read and putt on that last hole but got absolutely stone-cold robbed,” Nicklaus said in a message on Facebook.

Mickelson plopped his hand on his forehead in disbelief. His caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, was so stunned that he fell over backward.

“It was one of the best rounds I’ve ever played ... and yet I want to shed a tear right now,” Mickelson said. “That putt on 18 was an opportunity to do something historical. I knew it, and with a foot to go I thought I had done it. I saw that ball rolling right in the center. I went to go get it. I had that surge of adrenaline that I had just shot 62, and then I had the heartbreak that I didn’t.”

No tears were necessary at Royal Troon, not after a round of 63 that was

brilliant even by Lefty’s standards, and certainly not after building a three-shot lead over Patrick Reed and Martin Kaymer on an ideal day by the Irish Sea. Mickelson seized the moment with a birdie on the par-5 16th from a bunker short of the green, and a 4-iron to 15 feet for birdie on the par-3 17th to reach 8-under par. He knew no one had ever shot 62 in a major. He also knew he most likely would never get a chance like this.

“That would have been really something special,” he said. “So to have that putt lip out, that’s going to sting for a while.”

Even with such a close call, Mickelson is in good company.

Nicklaus missed a putt just inside 3 feet for a 62 in the 1980 U.S. Open at Baltusrol. Greg Norman had to only twoputt from 30 feet for a 62 at Turnberry in the 1986 British Open and took three putts. Tiger Woods watched his 15-foot putt for 62 spin 270 degrees around the cup in the 2007 PGA Championship at Southern Hills. Nick Price’s birdie putt for a 62 in the 1986 Masters dipped in and out of the cup.

It wasn’t for a lack of effort. He went with a 6-iron to play a baby cut back toward the hole, and it worked out perfectly. He brought in his caddie and told him that “I need your best read.”

Ernie Els did his part, putting out of turn to turn the stage over to Mickelson.

The pace was perfect. The putt looked perfect – until it wasn’t. By a fraction.

And now, he faces a return to reality. Of the seven previous players to open with a 63 in a major, only Nicklaus at the 1980 U.S. Open and Raymond Floyd at the 1982 PGA Championship went on to win.

Bouagnon named preseason candidate for Doak Walker Award

Northern Illinois senior Joel Bouagnon was named as one of the preseason candidates for the Doak Walker Award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced on Thursday.

Bouagnon is one of 76 players listed as a candidate for the award, which is given to the nation’s best college running back.

Last season, he rushed for 1,285 yards and 18 touchdowns – the latter of which was the 10th most in the country. NIU women’s basketball nab transfer from Butler

Nicole Orr will transfer from Butler to Northern Illinois, Huskies women’s basketball coach Lisa Carlsen announced on Thursday.

Orr comes to DeKalb after playing two seasons with the Bulldogs, including just two games in an injury-shortened year her freshman year. Last season, the 5-foot-10 guard averaged 4.2 points and 1.5 rebounds for Butler in 12.8 minutes per game.

She will have to sit out next season, having to wait until the 2017-18 campaign to play because of NCAA transfer rules.

Alzheimer’s research focuses on proteins

report in the journal Brain, researchers examined the brains of more than 3,600 people who had died. They concluded the presence of dysfunctional tau protein might be more important than amyloid-beta in causing the cognitive decline and memory loss seen in Alzheimer’s.

Tau tangles occur early in the disease process. The hope is by designing treatments that target tau, we can prevent symptoms of Alzheimer’s, or slow down symptoms in those who already have signs of dementia.

The challenge is to focus on the right ones.

You need normal tau protein in the brain.

The trick is to remove only the abnormal tau protein that is damaging nerve cells.

Several tau-focused drugs are in development. They include: • LMTX. This drug is supposed to reduce the clumping together of abnormal tau proteins.

• TPI 287. This drug is designed to stabilize the nerve cell microtubules that are damaged by abnormal tau proteins.

• Nilotinib. This FDA-approved leukemia drug is thought to help clear abnormal tau from the brain.

Leading Alzheimer’s researchers are optimistic that effective tau-focused treatments will be available within the next five to 10 years. You can learn about studies underway to treat Alzheimer’s disease at www.clinicaltrials.gov. It lists the studies that actively are recruiting patients.

Dear Dr. K: Is there anything new on the horizon for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease?

Dear Reader: Alzheimer’s disease affects more than 5 million people in the United States, alone. And that number is expected to more than double by 2050. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Gad Marshall about advances in Alzheimer’s treatment. He is an assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School.

Medical research has discovered two proteins found in the brain are important in causing Alzheimer’s disease. The first is called amyloid-beta. This protein clumps together to form plaques in the brain. These plaques long have been recognized as a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.

Unfortunately, drugs and vaccines that target amyloid-beta so far have not proved very effective. The problem might be by the time Alzheimer’s symptoms appear, plaque formation is already extensive. Much damage already has been done, and treatment may come too late.

Through research, doctors have developed techniques for spotting plaques of amyloid-beta when they are first forming, in younger adulthood. With that tool in hand, doctors now are conducting large studies to see whether treatment to lower amyloid-beta levels at a much earlier stage will reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Recently, new potential treatments have focused on a different protein: tau. Tau clumps together in the brain to form what are called “tangles.” Like the plaques of amyloid-beta, the tau tangles long have been a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Tau helps to transport nutrients into the cells and to move waste out of cells.

However, when tau protein forms tangles, brain cells have trouble getting enough nutrients and eliminating waste. As a result, brain cells slowly die. In a recent
