We’ve all got our own Pokémon problems POLL Maybe it’s age, but I have no knowledge of anything Pokemon other than it was a kids’ card game and some kind of yellow, alien-looking rat is involved.

My kids might have played it, but I paid as much attention to that as I do to their longer-running Minecraft obsession – a world I’m comfortable letting them navigate without my supervision or feigned interest.

So have you downloaded the “Pokemon Go” app? There are only two game apps on my phone: an early version of Angry Birds and a Cold War version of Tetris. Angry Birds used to come in handy in doctor’s offices, restaurants or other locales where I’d rather not have my children running around screaming.

Still don’t know a Pikachu from a pelican, but as much as I want to make fun of people (at least adults) walking around capturing imaginary creatures with their phones, we’ve all got our e-hangups.

I’m somewhat ashamed to admit that I’ve got a Tetris problem.

Police: Triple shooting broadcast live to Facebook NORFOLK, Va. – As a man live-streamed Facebook video of himself and two friends smoking and listening to music in a car, someone opened fire on the vehicle, wounding all three men, police said Wednesday.

About 5½ minutes into the Facebook Live video posted Tuesday evening, at least 30 rounds are fired in a 22-second span. The camera then falls to the floor. Norfolk Police confirmed the video was of the triple shooting, but Officer Daniel Hudson said he didn’t have any further details, including whether the men were targeted.

Two 27-year-old men and a 29-year-old were taken to a hospital with “significant injuries,” police said. Two of the men were doing better Wednesday, but one still is in critical

condition.

The shooting was reminiscent of other recent broadcasts on Facebook Live.

In Minnesota last week, Philando Castile’s girlfriend streamed the immediate aftermath of his shooting death on Facebook. That video prompted protests around the country, including in Dallas, where five officers were killed.

In Chicago, police say 28-year-old Antonio Perkins was live-streaming when he was shot last month.

The video shows a man recording himself standing outside and looking from side to side. Shots ring out and the camera falls to the ground in grass spattered with blood.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said at the time detectives discovered the video on the man’s Facebook page and believe it’s authentic.

‘Pokemon Go’ draws hundreds to DeKalb

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A mob of hundreds charged the streets of downtown DeKalb on Tuesday in pursuit of a rare creature not visible to an unsuspecting bystander.

Since the July 6 release of the mobile app “Pokemon Go,” people worldwide are on a mission to be the very best – as no one ever was.

Surprisingly, the video game might be just the thing to get people off their couches, into the community and, perhaps, even in shape, fans have said.

In fact, for the past three nights, hundreds have gathered in downtown DeKalb to hunt Pokemon and build the most impressive collection among their friends.

DeKalb game store, The Gaming Goat, 299 E. Lincoln Highway, is taking full advantage of the hype, and has used the game to help draw large crowds to the city’s downtown.

But sometimes the game leads people to wander into unfamiliar territory.

It wasn’t until Jake Jensen was moments away from hopping a fence to escape a loose dog that he fully realized he was on private property.

“I hopped the fence, and I saw the dog and the porch, and I was like, ‘It’s not leashed,’ and I booked it and the dog

chased after me,” Jensen said. “I threw my phone over the next fence and just hopped it.”

“Pokemon Go” uses a device’s camera to allow players to see the animated creatures in a real environment. Since its release, the app has made about $1.6 million a day, according to reports from SensorTower.

Fans are buzzing about the game’s success in bringing people together and encouraging fitness (players have to walk a set distance to unlock certain characters), but it’s also raised concerns from law enforcement and raised the eyebrows of those on the outside looking into the game’s seemingly ubiquitous presence.

DeKalb’s Pokemon-related police calls mostly have been for loitering and reports of suspicious activity, DeKalb police officer Kelly Sullivan said.

DAAHA celebrates ‘Cow Appreciation Day’ DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association will celebrate Cow Appreciation Day from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday by exploring the many contributions of dairy cows.

Visitors can meet Maggie, a fullsized artificial cow, and try hand milking. Maggie, who will appear courtesy of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau, demonstrates how cows were milked before the invention of milking machines. Some of the dairy innovations that occurred within northern Illinois, including the many accomplishments of Henry Gurler, also can be seen within the museum gallery.

“Cow Appreciation Day” is sponsored by the American Library Association. In the late 1800s, Emmett Lee Dickinson, a relative of Emily Dickinson, created “Cow Appreciation Day” as a tribute to poet Gelett Burgess.

Burgess had written the poem, “I never saw a purple cow.” DAAHA is appreciating cows for their many contributions to agriculture.

DeKalb aldermen hear proposal for higher gambling fees

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The city wants to exponentially increase fees on video gaming terminals, with officials saying that the current rates are well below what other municipalities charge.

Council members had a first reading at their meeting Monday on the proposal to raise the initial, one-time application fee for video gaming terminals from $25 per terminal to $500.

The annual renewal few would jump from $25 per terminal to $250 for each terminal.

“This video gaming fee increase would not be a large source of revenue.

If it’s based just on the 79 current machines we already have, it would bring in another $17,775 additional dollars,”

said Cathy Haley, the city’s finance director.

Nevertheless, the income is money the city anticipates as part of the fiscal 2016 budget it adopted last month.

Haley said DeKalb’s fees for the gaming terminals is believed to be far below that of other area regional municipalities. She told aldermen that in some places the fee is as high as $1,000.

Although the proposal passed and is expected to be on the council’s July 25 agenda, there were alderman who opposed it or wanted to see some tweaks.

Fourth Ward Alderman Bob Snow mentioned giving a break to organizations that give the proceeds of their gaming terminals “to a true charitable endeavor.”

Several aldermen rejected that idea.

Anthony Faivre, 7th Ward alderman, cited Illinois Gaming Board data about profits that video game terminals often yield. He said the fee increase wouldn’t hurt many owners’ bottom line.

“The net taxable income from DeKalb [for video gaming terminals] was over $2.2 million that these games produced. So, even $250 a machine is a drop in the bucket for what these machines are pulling in,” Faivre said.

First Ward Alderman David Jacobson recused himself from voting on the measure because, he said, he is the potential owner of a building where the tenants are looking to have video gaming terminals.

Rey announced that Jacobson registered to speak as a public citizen on the issue, and the city attorney clarified that Jacobson had a right to do so.

Speaking from the public podium, Jacobson blasted the fee increase proposal as “another barrier of entry into this market” for business owners.

“To come in and start a business, there are already fees that the city is charging,” Jacobson said. “At some point, the barriers for entry – for any business owner, in any business – are too high.”

City Attorney Dean Frieders said that as far as the video terminal fees, he has heard the opposite.

Frieders said he heard from some terminal owners that the fee was low.

The city was advised, he said, to increase the cost.

RITA F. BORK

Born: May 26, 1928, in Chicago Died: July 12, 2016; in Elgin Rita F. Bork, age 88, of Elgin, formerly of Maple Park, passed away in the quiet hours of the morning Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at Oak Crest Nursing Home in Elgin, where she had made her home in recent years. Answering the call of her Savior, she is now free to reunite with her husband, Howard, for eternity. She was born May 26, 1928, in Chicago, the daughter of Stanley and Frances (Barron) Gerlovich.

She is survived by three children, Glenn (Kathleen) Bork, Gwendolyn (Steve) Farver and Gregory Bork; five grandchildren, Melissa Kast, Tonya Zimny, Chris (Nicole) Bork, Kimberly (Joseph) Cinquegrani and Michelle Martin; eight great-grandchildren, Ashley, Dustin, Brooke, Collin, Arianna, Brennan, Connor, Annabelle; one great-great-grandson, Nathan; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and a countryside of friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Frances Gerlovich; her loving husband of 51 years, Howard; and one brother, Edward Gerlovich.

Visitation followed by a rosary will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, July 15, 2016, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL. Mass to celebrate her faith will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2016, with a time of visitation from 10 to 10:45 a.m., at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Virgil. The Rev. Perfecto Vasquez, pastor of the church, will officiate, with interment to follow at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery.

WALTER C. KAHLE Walter C. Kahle, 87, formerly of Des Plaines, Illinois, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2016, in Woodstock.

He was born in Waterman to the late Elmer and Agnes (Kroeger) Kahle. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean conflict. He spent his working career at IBM, retiring from there almost 20 years ago.

His is survived by his wife Aileen; daughter, Wanda Schindewolf; grandson, Michael Schindewolf; two great-grandchildren, Emalee and Landon; stepchildren, Timothy (Carol) Schulz, Jonathan Schulz, Carol (Matthew) Fabian and Donna (Clyde) Gebhardt; six stepgrandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; and his sister, Wilma Kastler. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha; and two brothers, Harold and Willard Kahle.

A memorial service is planned with a visitation at 10 a.m. and a service at 11 a.m. July 15, 2016, at the First Congregational Church. 11628 E.

She was multitalented in the arts with a love of poetry, ceramics and playing the flute. Her flair for style and individual expression made her the beautiful young woman she was. She had a gregarious gift to gab and made friends easily. She was intellectually articulate, which empowered her to expound on any given subject.

LOCAL BRIEFS Sycamore Legion Riders host Dallas support ride

Members of the American Legion Riders of Sycamore Post 99 will host a support and benefit ride Sunday for the Dallas officers and families who have been torn apart by the shooting last week.

The ride will begin at DeKalb Harley-Davidson, 969 Peace Road in DeKalb.

Line up will start at 11 a.m. Ride briefing is at noon.

The group will depart at 12:10 p.m. and head to the Genoa Veterans Club, 311 S. Washington St. in Genoa. A band will play there from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

A $10 donation is requested per vehicle. All vehicles are welcome.

SYCAMORE – Prosecutors have filed more child sex assault charges against a 72-year-old Shabbona man involving two additional victims.

Gary R. Hulthen, 72, of the 13100 block of Shabbona Road, Shabbona, was charged in June with 48 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child in two separate cases involving two different children.

This month, prosecutors filed four more counts Gary involving two more R. Hulthen children. A total of four victims – and four cases – are listed in court records.

Judge Marcy Buick took the unusual step of ordering Hulthen held without bond July 5 on the first two cases to protect the community.

“The court finds that proof is evident and presumption is great that the defendant committed the offenses [in the first two cases],” the judge ordered.

“The court finds that the defendant poses a real and present threat to persons in the community. The court finds

that there are no conditions of bond that could reasonably protect persons in the community.”

Prosecutors had requested that Hulthen not be granted bond at all because he is a danger to children. Assistant State’s Attorney Alicia Caplan said such requests are “reserved for very serious cases.”

Prosecutors filed the new charges July 5 alleging four assaults between December 2011 and December 2014 involving two children younger than 13.

Police reports for all four cases have been impounded.

Buick set Hulthen’s bond at $5 million on the two most recent cases, according to court documents. Hulthen remains in custody at the DeKalb County Jail. Hulthen likely will remain in jail until the cases are resolved, said Robert Nolan, his attorney.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said detectives had been working “around the clock” on the case. He said investigators don’t believe there were any more victims.

If convicted of charges involving two children, Hulthen would be sentenced to natural life in prison by law.

He is next due in court Aug. 3 for an arraignment.

“I guess the safety concerns the police department has is, we want people to be aware of their surroundings. If their eyes are glued to their cellphones, and they’re looking down while they’re walking, they could walk into the street.”

For the uninitiated, the crowd was a surprise, DeKalb resident Wesley Galvin said.

“I thought Corn Fest was starting early,” Galvin said. “Other than Corn Fest, you don’t really see that many people simultaneously running around downtown.”

Despite onlookers’ concerns, those who play the game said it’s done more good than harm.

“We’ve made a lot of friends. We don’t make money off of ‘Pokemon Go’ directly, but we see what it’s doing and how it’s bringing people together and giving them a peaceful task to do together, something that’s not so serious,” Henrikson said. “That along with the fact that it’s giving people some physical exercising and bringing them out from a sedentary lifestyle, I think that’s great.”

Although the game has attracted people of all ages, it seems to hold a special place in the hearts of millennials such as Gaming Goat employee Andrea Wiedel, who still harbors nostalgia for the original games.

“Over time, my interest in Pokemon has kind of dropped off, but I was still there for the 150 original Pokemon, so I still had my favorites from that,” she

said. “My interest in this is I want those Pokemon that I loved so much. ... This is something we wanted when [we] were in second and third grade, and now it’s here.”

Although it’s been speculated “Pokemon Go” is just another passing fad, likely to disappear in time, Henrikson believes its popularity in DeKalb County might outlast that of other ar-

“I think it’s going to be at least the first semester of college really hard because once the freshmen come, DeKalb is a really, really good Pokemon town. Most towns don’t have as many Pokestops, or Pokemon, or just people active in general,” he said. “I think it’s not going to stop any time soon. We’re just seeing the very beginning of it.”

Hanson said Tuesday’s rejection might have been the result of a misunderstanding of the terms of the deal. However, he declined to go into specifics.

AFSCME represents certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, and housekeeping, dietary and laundry workers at the 190-bed facility. The union’s contract expired at the end of 2015.

DeKALB – 3M’s annual Closest to the Pin Contest this year will raise money to support the Barb Food Mart, a school-based food pantry serving the families of DeKalb School District 428.

The 23rd annual Closest to the Pin Contest will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the main 3M facility, 3050 Corporate Drive, DeKalb, according to a news release.

The event features an about 98yard Closest to the Pin Contest, with prizes of $1,000 for first place, $300 for second place and $100 for third. Six balls cost $5. Cash is required for the contest.

There also will be a silent auction with dozens of items donated by local merchants and area businesses up for bid. Checks are accepted at the silent auction.

About 170 people attended last year’s event, raising about $4,000.

Organizers hope to top that this year, said 3M’s Tim Smith.

to come out early this year to avoid the mid-day rush.

The event has benefited many local nonprofit organizations over the years.

This year, the employees of 3M decided to donate the proceeds to the Barb Food Mart, a nonprofit agency that strives to reduce food insecurity and increase nutrition education.

More than half the students in the district are eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch assistance. Teachers all across District 428 have long recognized the changing economic needs of the students they see each day in their classrooms.

To address this growing need of those who are food insecure, Barb Food Mart opened in June 2013 and serves 80 to 100 families each Thursday.

The nonprofit provides family-friendly meals, meat, fresh produce and milk while striving to provide an atmosphere of respect and dignity, according to the news release.

DeKALB – Union workers at the DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center have rejected a recent contract proposal and want to return to the bargaining table with county officials to resolve outstanding issues.

The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council 31 union represents about 150 county nursing home workers.

Those workers voted Tuesday not to ratify a tentative agreement that had been reached with the help of an outside mediator, AFSCME spokesman Anders Lindall said. He declined to provide details about the vote or characterize how close it was, citing union rules.

The union’s bargaining committee has asked for dates to resume negotiations with DeKalb County officials, Lindall said.

“There’s no reason we can’t work through this at the table,” he said.

“They want to to do their jobs. It’s in everyone’s best interests to settle at the table.”

Clinton urges nation to fix divisions

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that the Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln has been transformed into “the party of Trump,” declaring her GOP presidential opponent a polarizing figure who is deepening the divisions in America.

Clinton embraced the symbolism of Lincoln’s “House Divided” speech, using the Illinois Old State House chamber as the backdrop to argue that the nation needs to repair its divisions after a series of high-profile police shootings. A week before the Republican convention, Clinton said presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump would do little to heal the country.

“This man is the nominee of the party of Lincoln. We are watching it become the party of Trump. And that’s not just a huge loss for our democracy – it is a threat to it,” Clinton said, speaking from the black walnut wooden dais in the Old State Capitol. “Because Donald Trump’s campaign adds up to an ugly, dangerous message to America.”

Clinton is not the first to reach for Lincoln’s legacy. “His campaign is as divisive as any we’ve seen in our lifetimes. It’s built on stoking mistrust and pitting American against American,” Clinton said. “It’s there in everything he says and everything he promises to do as president.”

In her speech, Clinton rattled off a series of attacks against her GOP rival, calling Trump “dangerous,” ‘’divisive,” ‘’fear-mongering” and “pitting American against American.” Even stalwart Republicans, she said, should be alarmed by Trump’s policies and racist rhetoric.

Cook County jail water checked for Legionnaires’

CHICAGO – Cook County health officials are checking water systems at the county jail as they look for the source of bacteria causing Legionnaires’ disease in one inmate.

Officials from the Cook County Health and Hospital Systems were at the jail Wednesday morning. The sheriff’s office announced Tuesday that a jail detainee, who had been hospitalized since July 6 with pneumonia-like symptoms, has tested positive for the disease.

The inmate had been in the jail since fall of 2015. No other detainees or staff on his living unit or division developed symptoms. The sheriff’s office said some detainees will be moved out of an abundance of caution.

Housing agency offers help to homeowners

CHICAGO – Illinois is receiving nearly $1.4 million in federal funds to help seasonal farmworkers with housing and job training.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin announced the U.S. Department of Labor grant Monday. It’s part of $81 million in funds being distributed nationwide as part of the department’s farmworker jobs program.

The Illinois Migrant Council will use the money to help agricultural workers and their families learn new skills and have better housing options.

Obama: Still far from solving police, community issues

WASHINGTON – America is “not even close” to where it needs to be in terms of resolving issues between police and the communities they serve, President Barack Obama said after concluding a more than three-hour meeting Wednesday with community activists, politicians and law enforcement officials.

Obama expressed optimism, however, and said the participants – who included members of the Black Lives Matter movement – agreed such conversations need to continue despite emotions running raw.

Obama has devoted his attention this week to the gun violence directed at police officers as well as shootings by police. The focus comes a few days after a black Army veteran killed five police officers in revenge for police shooting black men in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and the Minneapolis suburbs.

On Tuesday, Obama attended a memorial service for the five slain Dallas officers and called the families of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota to offer condolences. He said he wanted Americans to have an open heart so that they can learn to look at the world through each other’s eyes, and Wednesday’s meeting followed that theme.

Obama said it would be key to repeat the “kind of respectful conversations we’ve had here” across the country.

“The conversation that took place around this table is very different than the one that you see on a day-to-day or hourly basis in the me-

dia,” Obama said.

But Obama also said the “bad news” was that making progress is hard.

The nearly three dozen people invited to the White House included some police organizations that have little regard for Black Lives Matter, a group they blame for inciting violence against police officers. White House officials acknowledged that enhancing the trust that has been frayed in so many communities will be a job for future presidents, but they said Obama was determined to get all sides to commit to steps they can take to improve relations.

Those attending the meeting included Gov. John Bel Edwards of Louisiana and Mayor Chris Coleman of St. Paul, Minnesota, the two locations where police shootings sparked protests around the country. Mayors from Los Angeles, Newark, New Jersey, and Anaheim, California, also attended. From the administration, Attorney General Loretta Lynch joined the president.

“At a time when our country, when we are talking past each other, the president’s convening allowed us to hear one another,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Also on the list were Mica Grimm, with Black Lives Matter Minnesota, and DeRay Mckesson, who was arrested Saturday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on a charge of obstructing a highway. Police said Mckesson “intentionally” placed himself in the road after protesters were repeatedly warned to remain on private property or the curb.

LONDON – Theresa May entered No. 10 Downing St. on Wednesday as Britain’s new prime minister, after a bittersweet exit by David Cameron that was tinged with humor and regret.

“I was the future once,” Cameron quipped as he left office. But that future now belongs to May, and it involves instability, uncertainty and tough wrangling over Britain’s departure from the European Union.

Britain’s transition of power unfolded with startling speed since the June 23 referendum on EU membership.

Cameron announced his resignation after voters rejected his appeal to stay in the 28-nation bloc, and May, the former home secretary, became Conservative Party leader Monday after an abbreviated contest in which her only remaining rival dropped out.

Then came ceremonial choreography: Two trips to Buckingham Palace and two audiences with Queen Elizabeth II that ended with one prime minister out of a job and a new one curtseying to the monarch to begin her term.

Ginsburg’s Trump critique raises ethical quandaries

WASHINGTON – Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s public criticism of Donald Trump is dividing legal experts over whether the leader of the court’s liberal wing should recuse herself in any future case involving him.

In an interview last week, Ginsburg presumed Democrat Hillary Clinton will be the next president. Asked her thoughts on the possibility of a Trump win, she said, “I don’t want to think about that possibility,” and amplified her view in two subsequent interviews.

Trump quickly fired back at Ginsburg, who was appointed to the high court in 1993 by former President Bill Clinton. He tweeted Wednesday that the 83-yearold justice was an embarrassment for making “very dumb political statements about me. Her mind is shot – resign!”

While Ginsburg’s remarks were relatively tame in an era of hyper-partisanship, experts in legal ethics said she likely ran afoul of Canon 5 of the Code of Judicial Conduct, which says a federal judge “should not publicly endorse or oppose a candidate for public office.”

May stood in front of the iconic door of No. 10 with her husband, Philip, as the 13th prime minister of the queen’s reign and the first woman to hold the job since fellow Conservative Margaret Thatcher served from 1979 to 1990.

She acknowledged that Britain faces a rocky road ahead as it undoes 43 years of EU ties and forges a new relationship with its neighbors.

“Following the referendum, we face a time of great national change,” May said. “And I know because we’re Great Britain we will rise to the challenge.

“As we leave the European Union we will forge a bold new positive role for ourselves in the world and we will make Britain a country that works not for a privileged few, but for every one of us,” she said.

May promised to fight for social justice in a speech that addressed “hard-working families” who have struggled during the years of instability since the 2008 financial crisis. Many of those people, fed up with remote politicians and bureaucrats, voted to leave the EU. “When it comes to opportunity we won’t entrench the advantages of the

fortunate few. We will do everything we can to help anybody, whatever your background, to go as far as your talents will take you,” May said, in language more often used by left-of-center politicians, rather than by members of the center-right Conservative Party.

May began appointing her new Cabinet within an hour of taking office, and several posts went to “leave” supporters. The most notable was former London Mayor Boris Johnson, who was given the meaty job of foreign secretary, Britain’s top diplomatic post. The blond, Latin-speaking Johnson – a leader of the campaign for a British exit, or Brexit – had aspired to be prime minister himself before his bid failed because of party infighting.

Former Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond was named Treasury chief, ousting George Osborne, a strong “remain” voice in the referendum. May’s former job of home secretary went to Amber Rudd.

May has said she will create a new post of “Brexit” minister to oversee talks on a British EU exit from the 28-nation EU. That key job went to veteran Conservative lawmaker David Davis – a longstanding advocate of leaving the EU – and he will lead at least two years of negotiations with the bloc.

INDIANAPOLIS – Republican Donald Trump on Wednesday entered the final phase of his high-profile search for a running mate, arranging last-minute meetings with his finalists and family members as his staff prepares for a Friday announcement.

Trump posted on Twitter on Wednesday evening that he would reveal his choice at 11 a.m.

Friday in Manhattan.

He began Wednesday with breakfast at the residence of one, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Wednesday morning, a day after the pair campaigned together in the state. Hours later, Newt Gingrich, another finalist, was seen with Trump’s entourage at a downtown Indianapolis hotel.

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, who has

been advising Trump, was spotted arriving at the same hotel not long after Gingrich left.

Trump’s family, including Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Newt Kushner, also met priGingrich vately with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Tuesday. The meeting was confirmed by a source with direct knowledge of the meeting, but was not authorized to discuss it publicly.

Indiana is a state with particular significance for the presumptive GOP nominee: It’s where he effectively locked up the GOP nomination with a commanding primary win that drove former rival Ted Cruz from the race.

Pence, Christie and Gingrich were said to be the final contenders for vice presidential candidate on the Republican ticket less than a week before the GOP meets in Cleveland for the formal nomination. That’s according to a person familiar with Trump’s thinking, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the vetting process. Trump said in a Tuesday interview with The Wall Street Journal that Sessions, Trump’s top Senate advocate, also is still in the mix.

Pence is a steady, staunch conservative who would help calm nervous Republican wary of Trump’s impulsive style. Gingrich is a boisterous rabble-rouser who has spent decades in Washington, including as House speaker. Christie, a one-time rival, has become one of Trump’s most trusted advisers.

WASHINGTON– The nation’s health care tab this year is expected to surpass $10,000 per person for the first time, the government said Wednesday. The new peak means the Obama administration will pass the problem of high health care costs on to its successor.

The report from number crunchers at the Department of Health and Human Services projects that health care spending will grow at a faster rate than the national economy over the coming decade. That squeezes the ability of federal and state governments, not to mention employers and average citizens, to pay.

Growth is projected to average 5.8 percent from 2015 to 2025, below the pace before the 2007-2009 economic recession but faster than in recent years that saw health care spending moving in step with modest economic growth.

National health expenditures will hit $3.35 trillion this year, which works out to $10,345 for every man, woman and child. The annual increase of 4.8 percent for 2016 is lower than the forecast for the rest of the decade.

A stronger economy, faster growth

in medical prices and an aging population are driving the trend. Medicare and Medicaid are expected to grow more rapidly than private insurance as the baby-boom generation ages. By 2025, government at all levels will account for nearly half of health care spending, 47 percent.

The report also projects that the share of Americans with health insurance will remain above 90 percent, assuming that President Barack Obama’s law survives continued Republican attacks.

The analysis serves as a reality check for the major political parties as they prepare for their presidential conventions.

Usually in a national election there are sweeping differences between Democrats and Republicans on health care, one of the chief contributors to the government’s budget problems. But this time, the discussion has been narrowly focused on the fate of Obama’s law and little else.

Gaming license cost should reflect value DeKalb County’s two home-rule cities ought to increase the amount they are charging for video gaming licenses.

The amount that business owners are paying for them is in no way reflective of their true value.

Take DeKalb, for example, where City Council members recently debated increasing the annual fee for these terminals tenfold, from $25 to $250. The initial application fee would cost $500 instead of $25.

That sounds like a big increase until you consider the way these terminals are draining DeKalb residents’ funds.

From January 2015 to January of this year, the 64 video gambling machines in 16 DeKalb establishments raked in $2.47 million in profits.

In Sycamore, the city charges a $100 annual licensing fee. The 52 gambling terminals in 12 of that city’s establishments were even more efficient, with gamblers losing $2.5 million during the time period.

All local municipalities that allow gambling are profiting through a 5 percent share of the house winnings.

Of the $2.47 million profit, DeKalb received $112,000.

Sycamore took in $125,300 of the $2.5 million collected there.

But the bigger winners here are the terminal operators and the establishment owners. They split 70 percent of the revenue the machines in their establishment collect.

The take seems to be increasing, too. In June, gambling machines in DeKalb collected almost $300,000 in all, with terminal operators and establishment owners splitting about $200,000. Sycamore’s 12 establishments and gaming terminal operators split more than $146,000 for the month, according to data from the Illinois Gaming Board.

Considering their bottom lines are being so generously subsidized by their customers – who could be spending their money on literally anything else and seeing more benefit – the terminal operators and establishment owners can afford to split a higher licensing fee, too.

For those communities that aren’t home rule, state law limits the annual license fee to $25 a year, a pittance when considering how lucrative our state’s burgeoning gambling industry has become. State law should be changed to allow for its increase.

Some communities, such as Elmwood Park and Crystal Lake, charge a $1,000 annual fee for the machines – which sounds about right.

For DeKalb and Sycamore, we recommend phasedin increases in the licensing fees for these terminals.

DeKalb could start at $250 a year, but shouldn’t stop there.

Video gambling has proven more lucrative and market-changing that many people expected. The fee for a gambling terminal license in DeKalb and Sycamore should reflect the value inherent in a license to take money from people for nothing.

Tough path ahead for Theresa May Theresa May, who has become Britain’s next prime minister by a process of elimination, may nevertheless be the best available choice.

Her rivals in the Conservative Party, having persuaded voters to choose to exit the European Union with irresponsible rhetoric and unfulfillable promises, self-destructed one by one. That left May, a veteran cabinet minister and Euroskeptic who nevertheless favored the “remain” side, the last candidate standing.

When she takes office Wednesday, she will inherit a mess of profound proportions: There is no plan for carrying out the mandated EU withdrawal and probably no way to avoid painful economic and geopolitical consequences. Fortunately, May, like Britain’s only other female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, has a reputation for pragmatism and toughness; she will need loads of both.

Foremost among the new government’s problems will be facing the choice between seeking a close association with the EU, including full access to its market, and curbing the outward payments to Brussels and inward flow of EU immigrants, as promised by the Brexit camp. Failure to obtain the former could be devastating to Britain’s service- and finance-heavy economy, but surrender on the latter would enrage many voters.

May seemingly could incline in either direction: She has recently talked up the benefits of EU market access but has a long record as a hard-liner on immigration. Judging from what EU leaders have been saying since the referendum, she will not be able to have it both ways.

Prudently, May has indicated she will move slowly, waiting until early next year to formally trigger the withdrawal process. While that may irritate Brussels, it will give the new prime minister time to construct a plan, and perhaps to seek a mandate in a new general election.

In the meantime, May is signaling that she will seek to build her own political base with a domestic economic program that abandons the fiscal austerity of departing prime minister David Cameron and tilts distinctly leftward.

Sounding like more than one of the U.S. presidential candidates, May delivered a speech Monday under the slogan “A country that works for everyone, not just for the privileged few.”

She endorsed measures to raise working-class incomes and check executive pay and corporate takeovers. She even called for “a proper industrial strategy,” a nostrum usually associated with the opposition Labour Party.

That may make political sense at a time when Labour has veered toward the extreme left and is embroiled in its own internal power struggle.

May, however, also appears to appreciate that the Brexit vote was driven by a backlash against the costs of globalization, including growing inequality. As she put it, the referendum was not just a vote against the EU but also “a vote for serious change.” The exit from the union, which could take years to pull off, is not likely to answer those demands. While she negotiates with Brussels, May would be wise to pursue more workable responses.

Progressive Democrats didn’t get their way on every sentence of the platform: There are still limits to how far left Democrats will go. Liberal commentators have reached a consensus that the welfare reform of 1996 was a catastrophe for the poor. But Democratic politicians remain wary of revisiting the issue. The platform is careful, too, on guns, an issue where public opinion has moved right over the last two decades.

Progressives can fight those battles another day. For now they are celebrating what they have achieved in the latest platform. They have a lot more running room than they used to have, and they are making the most of it.

Clinton is unfit to handle classified information

Speaker, U.S. House of Representatives On Monday, in response to a request I made last week, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said that he would not refrain from providing classified information to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the duration of the presidential campaign. That’s a dangerous call. Here’s why he should reconsider: One thing is clear from the FBI’s investigation of Clinton: She recklessly mishandled classified information.

Clinton set up not one but multiple unauthorized servers from which she sent and received tens of thousands of sensitive government emails, including more than 100 that contained classified information at the time they were sent.

These emails went completely unprotected.

The consequences for the safety of our nation are grave. Clinton’s actions may have allowed our enemies to access intelligence vital to our national security. The FBI found that hostile actors could very well have gained access to classified information sent and received

by Clinton, her staff and their contacts.

In fact, the FBI confirmed that hostile

actors did indeed gain access to the private commercial email accounts of people with whom Clinton was in regular contact from her unauthorized account.

According to FBI Director James B. Comey, a standard Gmail account would have been more secure than what she used.

The FBI’s recommendation not to pursue charges against Clinton is based on the belief that she did not intend to endanger our national security. Instead, Comey called her and her staff “extremely careless.”

However, her actions do not seem careless at all. In fact, Clinton’s actions seem quite careful – careful to place her own interests before our national security. Setting up multiple unauthorized email servers is quite an undertaking.

Ask any IT expert. Transmitting tens of thousands of government emails does not amount to one or two thoughtless mistakes but a calculated series of choices made over the course of several years.

Moreover, it wasn’t just Clinton’s job to know what was classified – it was her job to decide what was classified. As secretary of state, Clinton was granted original classification authority, which gave her power to determine what is top-secret material. It’s safe to say that

she would know a classified document when she saw it. And more than that, the guidelines for classification at the State Department are pretty straightforward.

For example, the guidelines say “information provided to the United States Government by a foreign government or governments . . . with the expectation that the information . . . [is] to be held in confidence” may be classified.

Furthermore, the FBI investigation suggests that Clinton may have lied to Congress and did lie to the American people about what she did. She claimed that there was only one device.

She used multiple. She claimed all work-related emails were returned to the State Department. Thousands were not returned. She claimed that there were no emails marked “classified” on her server, but Comey said the FBI found multiple emails marked “classified.” We will never know how far-reaching the damage is because her legal team deleted many more thousands that can never be recovered.

Given all this, the FBI’s recommendation against criminal charges is puzzling, and I have asked Comey to release all of his findings. He himself has said that his decision was “not to suggest that in similar circumstances, a person

who engaged in this activity would face no consequences. To the contrary, those individuals are often subject to security or administrative sanctions.” There is no legal requirement to provide candidates with intelligence briefings, so it seems reasonable for her to lose this privilege.

As the presumptive Democratic nominee, Clinton is set to begin receiving classified intelligence briefings immediately following the Democratic National Convention this month. Clapper has refused my request to suspend these briefings, but the American people need to know what accountability Clinton will face - and what safeguards will be put in place to protect this information.

It’s no small matter to hand over classified information to a person as reckless with our national security as Clinton, absent the voting public’s explicit permission in November. If she is elected, those briefings can resume, allowing her more than two months to be fully briefed before she is sworn in as president.

Until that time, given Clinton’s record of extraordinary lack of discretion and judgment, the risk is just too great.

Democrats are galloping to the left. David Weigel made the point in a Washington Post report on their new party platform: “The Democratic Party shifted further to the left in one election than perhaps since 1972, embracing once-unthinkable stances on carbon pricing, police reform, abortion rights, the minimum wage and the war on drugs.” He could have added Social Security and immigration to his list.

So why has the unthinkable become thinkable? Four reasons come to mind.

• Partisan sorting: The Obama years saw the remaining conservative Democrats get wiped out, as Weigel notes. The Democrats are a more uniformly progressive party now. There are fewer conservative Democrats among the party’s elected officials and activists to counsel restraint, and fewer conservative Democratic voters to worry about alienating. The platform reflects these developments.

• Demographics: Democrats have grown increasingly convinced that demographic trends augur a lasting progressive majority. Whites are more conservative than nonwhites,

Kwaza relishes experience at Olympic trials

Although she came up short of one of her goals of finishing the 200-meter dash in less than 23 seconds, she said she still was pleased with her first experience at the U.S Olympic Track and Field Trials Friday in Eugene, Oregon.

Kwaza, a Sycamore graduate who just finished her bachelor’s degree at Iowa, finished sixth in her heat in 23.51 to finish in 26th place overall. The top three runners from each heat plus the next three fastest times earned a spot to the semifinals. The top three in the finals – Tori Bowie (22.25), Deejah Stevens (22.3) and Jenna Prandini (22.53) – earned spots on the Olympic roster.

Kwaza said the event had the feel of the NCAA National Championships, held last month in the same place.

“I guess it kind of felt a little like nationals, which we had there just a few weeks ago,” Kwaza said. “It felt like another big meet. Of course, there were a lot of big names there.”

One of those big names was Allyson Felix, the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the 200. Felix was in the same heat as Kwaza – in fact was in the next lane

– and won the heat in 22.93. Felix finished fourth in the final, .01 behind Prandini for the final qualifying spot in the event.

“It was intimidating at first,” Kwaza said. “At the same time, it was really cool. I got to say I got to run against a reigning Olympic champion. She was really nice. It felt like meeting another person at another meet. She’s not as big as everybody makes her out to be.”

Kwaza said she ended up moving up a couple spots from her seeding. She even finished .01 ahead of Ashley Henderson, who automatically qualified by taking third in the third heat.

“I knew a lot of the runners in my heat had put up 22s, and I wanted to go out there and start really fast to make them work,” Kwaza said. “That’s what I did. I feel like I was really able to accomplish what I wanted to do.”

Now begins an uncertain time for Kwaza, at least athletically. She said she’s heading back to Iowa in the fall to begin graduate school and to start an internship, but her eligibility is up. She said she’s not sure if Friday was her last event.

None of that was on her mind Friday, she said.

“I just thought of it as another race,” Kwaza said. “I didn’t think about any of University of Iowa senior Lake Kwaza competes in the women’s 100-meter dash final at that. I just went in there and ran.” the Big Ten Conference Track and Field Championships on May 15 in Lincoln, Neb.

Forsling Hawks’ next Swedish success?

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – It wasn’t long ago the Detroit Red Wings were Sweden’s unofficial NHL team, a wildly successful franchise loaded with Swedish talent. But the Wings’ old rival has supplanted them.

“The Blackhawks have taken over now,” Gustav Forsling said. “All the hats you see are Blackhawks, more and more. That’s good. I like that.”

Sweden loves the Hawks because the Hawks love Sweden – particularly Swedish defensemen. And Forsling might be the next one to crack the lineup, after the likes of Niklas Hjalmarsson, Johnny Oduya, David Rundblad, Erik Gustafsson, Viktor Svedberg. The smooth-skating Forsling just turned 20 last month, but is arguably the top defensive prospect in the system right now – and a dark horse to make the team out of training camp this fall.

AHL veteran Ville Pokka (who missed prospects camp with a lower-body injury) might be the most NHL-ready of the next generation at the moment, but many within the Hawks organization feel Forsling has the highest ceiling.

If he doesn’t make the Hawks, Forsling will head back to Sweden for another year rather than play in Rockford (he had six goals and 15 assists in 48 games last year). He’s fine with that, and the Hawks are fine with that. But Forsling is hoping that when he comes back across the Atlantic in September, he’ll be here to stay.

“Yeah, I mean, why not?” Forsling said at Hawks prospect camp at John-

ny’s IceHouse West. “I’m here to develop and learn and all that stuff, but I’m trying to make the team. If I don’t, I go back to Sweden, and there’s nothing bad in Sweden. It’s a really good league.”

Forsling’s chances took a hit with the signing of Brian Campbell and the re-signing of Michal Rozsival, which bolstered an alarmingly thin defensive corps. Even Gustafsson and Svedberg, who combined for 68 NHL games last

season, seem destined to spend much of the season in the AHL. But one of coach Joel Quenneville’s favorite adages is that you never can have too many defensemen. The Hawks used 11 defensemen last season, and 13 the year before that.

Forsling’s time might not be now, but it’ll be soon.

“Over the course of a year, you need 10 or 11 defensemen,” general manager Stan Bowman said. “You can never have too many guys.”

Forsling’s not complaining about the sudden logjam ahead of him on the blue line. Chicago is where he wanted to be, and he welcomed the trade Jan. 29, 2015, that sent Adam Clendening to the Canucks and Forsling to the Hawks. Like so many puck-moving defensemen before him, Forsling feels the Hawks’ quick-thinking, quick-passing style suits his game.

“I like the game plan they have here, and they like Swedish defensemen,” Forsling said with a smile. “[The depth chart] doesn’t matter. I need to play my best game to take a spot in the NHL. Of course, it’s getting even harder now, but if I’m going to play in the NHL, I have to be NHL good. And that’s up to me.”

Chicago ballparks ban smokeless tobacco New ordinance met with mixed reactions from Cubs, Sox

jtolention@suntimes.com Major League Baseball in Chicago is singing a new tune – “Take Me Out of the Ball Game” – when it comes to smokeless tobacco.

Chaw and dip have been staples in dugouts just as much as peanuts and Cracker Jacks in the stands.

But when the Cubs return to Wrigley Field on Friday – and the White Sox return to U.S. Cellular Field on July 21 – the use of smokeless tobacco products will be illegal at both ballparks, along with all “professional and amateur” sporting events in Chicago.

The city council approved the tobacco ban in March, and it officially went into effect Tuesday during the All-Star break.

The new ordinance has brought mixed reactions from both clubhouses.

Sox catcher Alex Avila, a smokeless user, insists players will break the ban.

“They just want to make sure it’s not visible,” Avila said. “For some guys, it might push them to quit. For others, it won’t.”

Cubs catcher and tobacco user Miguel Montero took a lighter view.

“Rules are rules, and rules are meant to be broken,” Montero said with a laugh. “But, seriously, we’ve got to follow the rules. It’s going to be tough to quit.”

The law is a result of lobbying by Ald. EdMiguel ward M. Burke (14th) Montero and the Washington, D.C.-based Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, which has targeted MLB because of the game’s historic relationship with chewing tobacco.

“Our national pastime should be about promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, not a deadly and addictive product,” said Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

Chicago becomes the fifth major league city to implement the tobacco

ban, joining Boston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.

“We can’t change their minds,” Sox infielder Tyler Saladino said.

“I’ve worked my whole life to reach the highest professional level of baseball, and I’m not going to stop something I’ve been doing this whole time.”

Whether that means getting their fix of chaw at home, the hotel or within the privacy of the clubhouse, the Cubs, Sox and all visiting teams must adjust to the ban or face fines.

A first offense will result in a fine of $250, a second violation $500 and each additional violation $2,500. Players seen using smokeless tobacco on Chicago ballpark grounds also are subject to discipline from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.

“Guys know what the consequences are, and they should know to use it outside the field now,” said Sox shortstop Tim Anderson, a nonuser. “I don’t think the ban will have a huge effect on our guys.”

Chewing tobacco has a multitude of negative health effects, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ranging from nicotine

addiction to cancer of the esophagus, mouth and pancreas. Still, the product remains a legal substance, and players know its effects.

“We’re grown men,” Cubs pitcher John Lackey, a nonuser, said during spring training when the law passed.

“People in the stands can have a beer, but we can’t do what we want? That’s a little messed up.”

MLB banned smokeless tobacco in 1993 at the minor league level, but it remains in use in the majors.

In 2011, the collective-bargaining agreement prohibited players from carrying tobacco tins and pouches in the pockets of their uniforms.

New signs detailing the ban have been posted in dugouts, bullpens and clubhouses at Wrigley Field and U.S. Cellular Field.

Cubs ace Jake Arrieta supports the ban and has cut back significantly on using chewing tobacco, but the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner still sneaks in an occasional pinch.

“I really hate that I do dip,” Arrieta said. “I think it’s a good thing that they’re trying to take it out of the game.”

After years of debate on the topic, regulated pitch counts are coming to high school baseball.

The National Federation of State High School Associations announced Tuesday that each member state association – which includes the IHSA – will be required to develop its own pitching restriction policy based on the number of pitches thrown in a game and give pitchers a required rest period between appearances.

“We’re pleased that the rules committee worked in conjunction with the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee to find an acceptable and reasonable modification to this rule in order to emphasis the risk that occurs when pitchers overuse their throwing arm,” Elliot Hopkins, NFHS director of sports and student services and staff liaison for baseball, said in a press release.

The IHSA now will have have to come up with a pitch count rule, as well as ways to enforce it. Craig Anderson, IHSA executive director, said the association was already in the process of creating a pitch count rule.

“The NFHS continues to show great leadership for its member associations when it comes to the safety of high school student-athletes,” Anderson said in a statement. “In Illinois, we had already begun a process intended to place more stringent baseball pitching restrictions in place prior to the 2017 season. Yesterday’s decision by the NFHS will not impact our timeline, although it does provide further guidance that will help our Baseball Advisory Committee and Sports Medicine Advisory Committees with their ultimate recommendation to the IHSA Board of Directors.”

Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz said he is looking forward to whatever the rule the IHSA decides to implement.

“I think to be honest it’s a good thing, and something we’ve been doing since I got here,” Piekarz said. “I think we’ve had just one pitcher throw more than 100 pitches in the past three years.

It’s something we try to do already. It’s going to force coaches to develop pitchers throughout the season, and that’s a good thing. It will also involve more strategy that coaches haven’t had to work on in the past.”

Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said while he’s glad there’s going to be such a rule, he said he wished the NFHS gave more guidance on the issue.

“I’m not sure how we’re going to police that and make sure counts are right, and how we’re going to put all

Anthony Rizzo implies Cubs took foot off gas VIEWS Rick Morrissey Everybody has an opinion about why the Cubs, losers of 15 of their past 21 games, crawled into the All-Star break. That would include various Cubs.

Second baseman Ben Zobrist implied fatigue might have played a role, railing against a schedule that had the Cubs working 24 straight days.

Others suggested that nothing is wrong that a few healthy bodies won’t solve.

Manager Joe Maddon said everything is fine and that, if you tilt your head, those dark clouds look like fluffy bunnies.

But until first baseman Anthony Rizzo spoke up Tuesday, I hadn’t heard anyone suggest that the bored Cubs had been guilty of playing with their food.

“There’s a sense of urgency,” he said. “Not that there’s not every single day. But you build a big lead, and I don’t want to say we were coasting, but I guess we were.

It’s good. You can’t be good all the time in this game. It’s impossible. We’ll be ready for the second half.”

The coasting explanation is more perplexing than it is understandable. It’s human nature to ease up when things are going well. The Cubs started the season 25-6. On the other hand, they haven’t won anything – not even their division last season. How is it possible for a team that got swept in the National League Championship Series to coast?

The Blackhawks are the only team I know of that can turn it on when it wants to and win. They also have won three Stanley Cups in the past seven seasons.

The problem with explanations is that they sound suspiciously like excuses. The fatigue issue isn’t just a Cubs issue. Squeezing a 162-game schedule into a six-month box ensures that every team will play a lot of games in row at some point.

The Cubs have some injuries? So do other clubs.

The Cubs were coasting?

Maybe. But it sure looked like Jake Arrieta couldn’t pitch more than five innings at a time. And it sure looked like the starting rotation was flagging after a great start.

The Cubs need this rest. They

also need to come out of the break roaring. To hear Rizzo tell it, that’s a choice, not a hope.

Everywhere Kris Bryant walks is Easy Street

Think of all the things in life that are easy for most of us to do. Putting on clothes. Starting a car. Inhaling and exhaling.

Playing baseball? No one would put that particular ability in the “easy” category. In fact, hitting a pitch at the major league level might be one of the hardest things known to man.

That’s why I keep shaking my head at Kris Bryant. The Cubs third baseman hit a home run off the White Sox’s Chris Sale at the All-Star Game on Tuesday night, and as thrilling as it might have been for Cubs fans, it was also something of a shrug. Of course he hit a home run. Because that’s what he does.

Aside from a few mini-slumps and a lot of strikeouts, Bryant has made it look easy since making his debut April 17, 2015. He played on the NL All-Star team last season, had 26 home runs and 99 RBIs, and won the NL Rookie of the Year award. He went to the playoffs with the Cubs. This year, he has a league-leading 25 home runs at the break, as well as 65 RBIs, and his team is in first place in its division.

Too easy. Well, not Mike Trouteasy. That’s effortless easy.

Bryant isn’t there and probably never will get to that level defensively. Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado, 25, has won a Gold Glove three straight seasons and probably would have had a better shot than Bryant did at stopping Eric Hosmer’s hard one-hopper in the All-Star Game.

But still. Everything else looks pretty easy for the 24-year-old.

He had a number of things going for him. I don’t want to say his success can be explained by genetics, but his double helix does look suspiciously like the seams on a baseball. His father was a minor-leaguer in the Red Sox organization. Also, his dad threw batting practice to him every day since his son was in the second trimester. So, yeah, it was either baseball or astrophysics for the kid.

The White-Jeffery tandem will be fun to watch, but it also opens up coverage on Royal, who can begin that return to being a key part of the offense – and a reminder of what he can bring to the offense – in training camp.

Golladay named to Biletnikoff Award watch list

Kenny Golladay’s big first season with the Northern Illinois football team garnered plenty of attention for the Chicago native.

Golladay was recently named to the 2016 Biletnikoff Award watch list, the Tallahassee Quarterback Club announced on Wednesday. After transferring to NIU from North Dakota, Golladay burst onto the scene with 73 catches for 1,129 yards and 10 touchdowns last season – giving him the third most receiving yards in a single season in NIU history.

There are 53 players on the watch list for the award, which is given to the best receiver in college football, and eight from the Mid-American Conference. Joining Golladay are Corey Davis (Western Michigan),

Along with cornerback and outside linebacker, receiver had pretty good retention rate for the Bears this season, with eight receivers returning, seven of whom made a catch last season and the one who didn’t is the one everyone will be watching this summer, Kevin White.

There’s experience and potential, but questions about health, which lead to a focus on the depth.

Three things to watch at the receiver position in training camp: White’s camp debut: No player will have more fanfare in camp than White, last year’s top pick who didn’t get to practice in 2005 in Bourbonnais. All we saw was some running on the side before he underwent surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left leg. The first two practices will be exciting for sure,

when Bears fans can see the size and speed in person, but the first padded practice is the important one, as it will be White’s first full-contact practice as an NFL player. He’s been 100 percent since late winter and looked the part in the spring – despite a few drops. We have four training camps to reference to have an idea of what we’ll see from Alshon Jeffery (his bigKevin White gest story line is staying healthy). At receiver, this camp will be all about White, his rapport with quarterback Jay Cutler and his role in the offense. White will have days in Bourbonnais when he’ll put on a show.

Stage Coach’s ‘Devil’s Disciple’ about loyalty, independence and sacrifice

amilton” may be the most popular play on Broadway, but DeKalb has its own Revolutionary War-era play: “The Devil’s Disciple.”

The Stage Coach Players production opened July 7 and will continue this weekend at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Stage Coach Theatre, 126 S. Fifth St. in DeKalb. Tickets are available online at www.stagecoachers.com or by phone at 815-758-1940. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $9 for children younger than 12.

“The Devil’s Disciple,” George Bernard Shaw’s first play, was first produced in 1898. The play tells the story of Richard Dudgeon, who returns home just ahead of the invading British army with news that his uncle has been hanged and his father is dead.

When the British arrive, they come to hang the minister, but arrest Dudgeon during a case of mistaken identity.

“The play takes place in 1777, during the first year of the Revolutionary War,” director Scott Morris said. “The British invaded the neighboring town.

The British are coming, and they’re going to invade. The town bad boy returns, and his family hates him and the town doesn’t trust him. He calls himself the Devil’s Disciple. There are cases of mistaken identity, a love triangle that isn’t really a triangle and trip to the gallows.”

The play’s Revolutionary War setting is timely, with performances starting after Independence Day. “I only recently realized that the play is performed right after the Fourth of July,” actress Diane Ledbetter of Maple Park said. “It’s a perfect way to remember the sacrifices that people made then. We often forget the Revolutionary War and their sacrifices, but because of those sacrifices, we have our independence.”

Actor Chris Porterfield of DeKalb said that being part of the cast is fun not only because of the period costumes, but also because the group gets along so well.

“Being involved in the play is a lot of fun,” Porterfield said. “The play tells the story of the founding of our country. It’s all about loyalty, independence and making sacrifices.”

“I love the costumes and props for the play,” Cain said. “We were able to find old money and use real wood for the fireplace. There are wigs, fancy uniforms with buttons, and pretty, but simple, dresses. The play is all about the Americans standing up against the British. It’s a play not just for history

The play also holds a place in the Stage Coach Players’ history. The troupe first performed the play in 1952, five years after their first performance.

“The play is a lot of fun, with Shaw’s

wit and humor,” said Morris, who has been with Stage Coach Players for 35 years.

“It’s a social comedy. Every production is unique because every cast tells the story differently. We are all different personalities and types of people.”

DeKalb Band concert features soprano vocalist

The next DeKalb Municipal Band concert will feature soprano Mary Beth Kurnat and the Hopkins Park Dixieland Band.

The concert will take place at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at the Dee Palmer Band Shell in Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

Kurnat is a native of DeKalb, where she rooted her musical career in jazz as a saxophonist. During high school, she was a two-time All-State Honors musician, placing in the top jazz ensembles in 2005 and 2006.

She is a 2011 alumna of Northern Illinois University and holds a bachelor’s degree in music education.

Prior to and throughout her undergraduate studies, her interests as a performer have Mary Beth transitioned from instrumental Kurnat jazz to classical voice. She has performed as a choral member, in musical roles in opera and musical theater, and more recently as a church musician.

Kurnat serves as the music team leader at Cambridge Lakes Learning Center in Pingree Grove, where she teaches beginning band and choral music for grades 3 through 5. She also teaches privately as a woodwind specialist in DeKalb, Kane and DuPage counties. She will begin her first season as a member of the Chicago Choral Artists this fall, as well as the St. Charles Singers, with whom she will travel to the UK in June 2017.

Kurnat will sing Gershwin’s “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess,” the jazzy blues ballad “Cry Me a River” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns.”

The program is varied with familiar music, as well as newer sounds. Two overtures, “The Barber of Seville” by Gioacchino Rossini and Lerner and Loewes’s “Brigadoon,” will be performed.

For the Strauss fans in the audience, the band will play Johan Strauss II’s, Overture to “Die Fledermaus” (The Bat) of 1874, which remains the most popular of all his operettas, and his “Chit Chat Polka,” often heard on the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s concert.

Marches include traditionals like Henry Fillmore’s “The Footlifter,” Leonard Smith’s “Belle Isle,” dedicated to the famous recreational island in Detroit, and “A Step Ahead” by Harry Alford.

Chris Sharp, arranger and orchestrator for Disney Parks worldwide, composed this newer concert-style march “The All American March.” Sharp wrote this march in the traditional style of Fillmore, King and Sousa, yet included a few clever twists and turns that showcase the woodwind section.

It features the traditional dogfight, with the brass returning to complement woodwinds, and a powerful statement of the trio theme for a stirring conclusion.

Many factors affect longevity Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard women tend to live longer than men. Why is that?

Dear Reader: On average, women do live about five years longer than men. In the United States, 57 percent of all who are ages 65 and older are female. By age 85, 67 percent are women. You can see this for yourself in most nursing homes or assisted living facilities in the United States: Women usually outnumber men, and the magnitude of the difference often is striking.

The ratio of men to women is roughly equal in young adulthood. So why does the ratio start to favor women over time? Among the most powerful factors are men tend to: • Take bigger risks. The part of the brain that controls judgment and consideration of an action’s consequences develops more slowly in boys and young men than in their female counterparts. This likely contributes to the fact far more boys and men die in accidents or due to violence. This tendency toward lack of judgment and consideration of consequences also might contribute to harmful lifestyle decisions among young men. Smoking or drinking to excess are two examples.

• Have more dangerous jobs. Men far outnumber women in some of the riskiest occupations. These include military combat, firefighting and working at construction sites.

• Die of heart disease more often and at a younger age. Men are 50 percent more likely than women to die of heart disease, although women start dying more frequently of heart disease after they reach their mid-60s.

• Commit suicide more often than women.

Depression is considered more common among women, and depression does cause some people to attempt suicide. Men are less likely to seek care for depression and

More than three times as many men die from suicide than women.

• Be less socially connected. People with fewer and weaker social connections tend to have higher death rates.

• Avoid doctors. Men are far more likely to skip routine health screens and are far less likely than women to have seen a doctor of any kind during the previous year.

Studies in animals indicate the females tend to have stronger immune systems. This means they are less likely to die of infections. (However, it also makes them more likely to develop autoimmune diseases.)

Whether this is a reason why women live longer than men is less clear.

There’s not much that can be done about some of these factors. But others are modifiable. For example, getting men to report symptoms (including depression) and regularly see a doctor for chronic medical problems could counter some of the tendency for them to die younger.

It’s also worth noting the survival gap between men and women reflects an average tendency among large numbers of people.

Obviously, and unfortunately, sometimes wives die before their husbands. But what you’ve heard is generally true: In the U.S. and other developed nations, women live longer than men.

I have been with my boyfriend for seven years. He was my first boyfriend, first kiss, etc. and because of that, I have always felt a deep connection with him. My problem is he doesn’t have goals for the future and just lives his life a day at a time. He’s comfortable with his low-income job and doesn’t plan on going to school.

He moved into my house six months ago.

Something I absolutely adore about him is his loving nature. He drops whatever he is doing to be there for me emotionally. Dear Abby: We DEAR ABBY have been attending the weddings Jeanne of our friends’ Phillips children and work colleagues.

We enjoy them, but we have noticed a change in some of the traditions.

The best man’s and maid of honor’s toasts to the bride and groom seem to have devolved into telling stories about their past escapades. This includes tales of all-night partying, how drunk they were, other embarrassing incidents and “digs” at the bride and groom.

Abby, many guests attending these celebrations really don’t care to hear these kinds of things. Has this occasion turned into a roast? –

But today’s article features Unusual versus Unusual. Your partner opens one of a major, and the next player overcalls two no-trump, the Unusual No-trump showing at least 5-5 in the minors. Then, it would be foolish for the responder’s bids of three clubs and three diamonds to be natural. Instead, many pairs play that a three-club cue-bid keys to hearts and three diamonds to spades. If partner opened one heart, three clubs promises at least game-invitational values in hearts. (Instead, a three-heart response shows the values for a single raise.) Also, three diamonds indicates at least game-forcing values with five-plus spades. (Instead, a threespade response is game-invitational but nonforcing.)

This worked very well in today’s deal. North’s three-club response showed game-forcing values with five or more hearts. Then, after South jumped to game, North, buoyed by the double fit in the majors, used Blackwood before signing off in six hearts. After West led the diamond king, what did declarer do?

South had no trouble taking 12 tricks. He won the first trick with dummy’s diamond ace, drew trumps, ran the spades (including a finesse of his nine against East’s 10), discarding two diamonds from the board, and conceded one trick to the club ace.

Note that six hearts by North fails if East leads a spade, and six spades

by South goes down if West leads a diamond.
