Fibs are a good parenting tactic POLL As children, we all were told that lying is bad.

We should always tell the truth and the truth will set you free. If you lie too much, your brain will explode from remembering too many things.

Pinocchio was a sad sight after he lied. No child has ever wanted a long nose.

All these tales were supposed to be warnings about lying, but most were made up themselves.

I took heed of all of these fabrications. I tried hard to make good choices, and I was fearful that somehow I would get caught doing anything wrong so lying about it would surely make it worse. Certainly, I was no angel or a devil. I kept my lying to the bare minimum.

There is an art to lying that adults have conquered because we have practiced.

When it comes to coping with toddler behavior, however, I admit I tell several white lies a day just to make my child cooperate. At times, I even have used bribery.

Now I know this might ruffle some feathers, but give me a break. I am trying the best I can, and some days just trying to survive temper tantrums. For me, fibs are a good parenting tactic.

A time or two I have told my child that we couldn’t go to the park unless she ate her vegetables. Of course, you can go to the park without eating anything, but health is

Arlington, Holocaust Museum: Stop catching Pokémon here

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and Arlington National Cemetery have requested that smartphone users refrain from “catching” Pokémon when they are visiting.

Museum Communications Director Andrew Hollinger told The Washington Post that officials are trying to reach the developers of the popular new “Pokémon Go” game to get the museum removed as a prominent location.

Fibbing is a wonderful parenting tactic.

Mothers and fathers have a duty to protect and keep our children healthy. We are tired at times and need some reinforcement when there isn’t any.

This is when fibbing is not lying, so much as a strategy to keep the air light in the midst of defiance and temper tantrums.

As a parent, I don’t think lying to my daughter is such a bad thing. Honestly, I don’t care if my nose grows, as long as there is peace in my house.

Sycamore’s Tuesdays on the Town features ‘Race Car Rally’

newws@daily-chronicle.com Becoming a race car driver is a dream of many young children. And area kids had the opportunity to sit in a real race car in downtown Sycamore at Tuesday night’s “Tuesdays on the Town.” The monthly event is sponsored by the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, and this month’s theme was “Race Car Rally.”

Ten race cars from Sycamore Speedway were parked at Elm and Somonauk Streets, and children were invited to touch the cars and crawl into the driver’s seat. The drivers and pit crew were on hand to answer questions and show off their cars.

Cole Tegtman, 10, of Sycamore is a big fan of car racing. He said he likes to watch IndyCar racing on TV. He came with his parents, who also are fans.

“I like racing because the cars go 230 miles an hour,” the fifth-grader at North Grove Elementary School said. “I like that some of them used to be regular cars that were turned into race cars.”

Jake Panther, 13, watches a lot of car racing on YouTube, so he wanted to see what the cars look like up close.

“This is something you don’t see every day, and they look really cool,” the Sycamore Middle School eighth-grader said.

Tiffany Gerace, manager of Sycamore Speedway, said one of her biggest missions is to promote a sense of community. She said the speedway needs the support of the community and was happy to bring the cars.

“We want to build up awareness of what’s in the community,” she said.

“We want to let people know we’re in their backyard. We want the whole family to come out because it’s affordable and a lot of fun.”

Driver Kyle Smith races at the Sycamore Speedway every weekend. The Cortland resident said he was having fun showing off his car.

“The fan base allows us to do what we do. We’re based off fan support, and this is something different for the kids,” he said.

Sycamore resident Bethany Rowan said her 3-year-old son loved the cars so much that he wanted to drive one.

“My boys wanted to come and it’s something fun for them to do. They wanted to check out the cars and they loved sitting in one,” she said. “This is good for kids to do in the summer, and it’s good for the community.

Alexis Kruis, 7, was very excited to see the cars because she “loves” them.

“I like to see cars race because they go really fast,” the second-grader at North Elementary said. “I like to sit in the cars and see what it’s actually like, and it’s really cool inside.”

Sycamore’s Veto Enterprises made its debut at “Tuesdays on the Town.”

The company assembles police cars for municipalities, as well as for movies or TV shows. The company’s owner, Bob Veto, brought two vehicles that were used in the TV shows “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago PD.” “The kids are having a ball,” Veto said. “They love the lights and the sirens. It’s fun for me to be here so they can enjoy it. They ask a lot of questions.”

The race car theme is appropriate for July’s “Tuesdays on the Town” because Sycamore hosts its “Turning Back Time” car show at the end of the month, said Rose Treml, executive

director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce. She said “Tuesdays on the Town” is a great way for residents to walk through downtown Sycamore.

“We want to bring a family-friendly environment and a place to gather,”

she said. “We want people to remember the businesses and restaurants downtown, and this is a good opportunity for them to do that. It’s so nice to be able to say that we have a walkable downtown area.”

Judge will consider Ridulph’s request for special prosecutor in McCullough case

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb judge will allow a hearing to determine whether DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack made statements that compromised his objectivity in Jack McCullough’s prison release.

On Tuesday, DeKalb County Judge William Brady denied Schmack’s request to bar testimony from the brother of 1957 murder victim Maria Ridulph, and chose to move forward with a formal hearing regarding alleged statements made by the state’s attorney.

Maria Ridulph’s older brother, Charles Ridulph, claimed in May that Schmack promised during the 2012 campaign to drop murder charges against Jack McCullough.

McCullough was convicted in 2012 of abducting Maria, 7, from near her Sycamore home and killing her.

The conviction was upheld on appeal. Brady agreed with Schmack’s request to dismiss murder charges against McCullough, 76, in April.

At an evidentiary hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 5, Brandwein will try to prove Schmack’s involvement in the 59-year-old cold case is undermined by a campaign promise.

The attorney will call Charles Ridulph and former Assistant State’s Attorney Julie Trevarthen as witnesses, he said. Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow has agreed to cross-examine Schmack and other witnesses in place of the DeKalb County State’s Attorney if the situation arises.

Trevarthen said she “heard Mr. Schmack state that if elected as

state’s attorney he would dismiss the murder charges,” court documents show. “[Charles Ridulph] is going to be able to tell his side of the story and whether we win or lose, he’s going to get his side of the story out,” Brandwein said after court Tuesday.

In a statement filed Monday, Schmack said he acted only within the obligations of his role as state’s attorney.

Although he does remember being in the courthouse’s attorney lounge in the summer of 2012, when he is accused of having declared McCullough’s innocence, he never said the former Seattle cop shouldn’t be tried, Schmack wrote.

“No one, myself included, expressed the view that the FBI had necessarily been right, or that the

trial should not proceed,” Schmack said.

He also remembers meeting with Charles Ridulph in 2014 and talking about scenarios in which the case could be returned for retrial, and and errors that the appellate defender would claim occurred.

“It was my opinion at the time that should the case be returned for retrial in that posture, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to obtain a conviction,” Schmack said. “I did candidly advise Charles Ridulph of my opinion.”

Should Brady find Schmack did have any conflict of interest in the case, the judge could appoint a special prosecutor to review Schmack’s finding that the charges against McCullough should be dismissed, Brandwein said.

MARITA RENSHAW LARSON Born: Nov. 18, 1938; Decatur, IL Died: July 5, 2016; Batavia, IL

Marita Renshaw Larson, 77, of The Holmstad Retirement Community in Batavia, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at Michealsen Health Center.

She was born Nov. 18, 1938, in Decatur, IL, the daughter of Carl and Evaline (nee Garner) Renshaw. She was united in marriage to Robert Larson Nov. 13, 2004.

Marita graduated from Lanphier High School in Springfield, IL, Class of 1956. She continued her education at Illinois College in Jacksonville in 1960 with a B.A. in English and minors in history, philosophy, Spanish and religion. Her first job was in 1960 at St. John’s School of Nursing in Springfield as their librarian. Marita was a lifelong learner and loved education. She continued to obtain her M.A. degree from Northern Illinois University, then took an additional 30 hours from NIU and ISU in special education. By May 1967, she was hired as a catalog librarian in the position of instructor and retired in 1996 as an assistant professor.

Church and volunteerism was another passion of Marita’s. She had been a member of Laurel United Methodist Church in Springfield, DeKalb Wesleyan Church and most recently Batavia Covenant Church. She donated her time and talents to educate, lead people to Christ or help those with disabilities; at United Cerebral Palsy Association, Youth for Christ, Illinois Library Association, American Library Association, various faculty organizations at NIU, Business and Professional Women’s Club, American Association of University Women and various church groups.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Larson; and her parents, Carl and Evaline Renshaw.

She is survived by her late husband’s children, Robert (Caryl) Larson Jr. of Glen Ellyn, Barbara (Ronald) Nardini of Elgin, Beverly (Michael) Andrews of Hanover Park, Devon and Lori Buckle of DeKalb; and many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Holmstad Benevolent Care Fund, c/o The Holmstad, 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia, IL 60510.

Lloyd L. Luther, age 79, of Cortland, passed away Monday, July 11, 2016, at the DeKalb County Nursing Home in DeKalb.

Lloyd was born Monday, Nov. 30, 1936, in Millington, IL, the son of Martin Tubbs and Ruby Mabel (Johnson) Luther.

He leaves behind his loving wife; Muriel; one daughter, Amy (Charles Heyob) Davies; two stepsons, Tim (Becky) Michael, and Tom (Connie Pfieffer) Michael; and numerous grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; and one sister, Janet Blue.

Lloyd now joins his parents and one sister, Nancy.

Attorney suggests woman’s injuries may have been self-inflicted

Brockman’s lawsuit seeks compensation for her medical expenses, punitive damages and legal costs. Loevy & Loevy, a Chicago-based firm that handles civil-rights and police misconduct cases, filed the case on her behalf in June.

Cindy Tsai, an attorney with Loevy & Loevy, couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.

Hristakos has denied the allegations.

Attorney George Bellas of Bellas & Wachowski, who represents both Hristakos and Kanavos, said an initial review of the facts indicated that Brockman may have taken a dispute with a man into the restaurant and that the dispute may have been ag-

gravated by her drinking alcohol. He also suggested her injuries had been self-inflicted.

Bellas said his clients haven’t filed a response to Brockman’s lawsuit, but plan to do so. He added that Kanavos wasn’t in the restaurant at the time of the incident, isn’t involved in the restaurant’s operations and shouldn’t have been named in the suit.

“Our clients will be completely exonerated,” Bellas said.

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said that his office reviewed all the evidence provided in the case and determined it “would not be able to meet the standard of probable cause to bring a criminal charge.”

He declined further comment, citing the ongoing civil case.

The case is next due in court Aug. 25.

DeKALB – City officials are fighting back after a Kingston woman, who claims she was attacked by an owner of Ellwood Steak and Fish House, filed a federal lawsuit alleging DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery shielded the restaurateur from criminal charges.

Kristina Brockman, 38, claims in her lawsuit that Vasilios Hristakos, who owns the DeKalb restaurant, broke her wrist and fractured her thumb in an unprovoked attack April 12 in the bar area of the restaurant at 2219 Sycamore Road. Brockman’s suit, filed in June at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Rockford, also claims that DeKalb police officers tried to dissuade her from filing a police report and that officers conspired to shield Hristakos from arrest and prosecution.

The law firm representing the city, Gardiner Koch Weisberg & Wrona, filed a motion July 8 to have the case dismissed. The city argues that Brockman was offered transportation to the hospital, was allowed to make a statement to police, and “was permitted to submit certain documentation to police regarding her medical treatment allegedly related to the dispute,” court records show. “[Brockman’s complaint] does not contain a single allegation that indicates she was treated differently from any other person similarly situated to her,” attorney Barry Owen wrote

in the motion to dismiss. “In short, [Brockman’s] claims of gender and personal animus are totally unfounded.”

The city also claims that the incident at the restaurant “started as a domestic dispute between [Brockman] and her boyfriend.” The boyfriend, who is not named in the suit, works at Ellwood Steak and Fish House, according to the city’s motion to dismiss.

When Brockman filed the suit in June, city officials declined to comment on the allegations, noting that the matter was still under investigation. However, City Attorney Dean Frieders said Tuesday that the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office had declined to file charges and the case has been closed.

There had been a disagreement between Brockman and a “romantic interest” before Brockman went to the restaurant the day of the incident, Frieders said.

He said the officers in the case followed proper procedure.

“Everything the officers did was appropriate,” Frieders said.

Frieders “vehemently and voraciously” denied that Lowery frequently dines for free at Ellwood Steak and Fish House, as Brockman’s lawsuit claimed. He also denied that anyone got special treatment during the course of the investigation. He said the chief patronizes many local businesses, but doesn’t accept free meals.

Kish College foundation head abruptly resigns

rgillespie@shawmedia.com MALTA – Kishwaukee College officials won’t say much about a key administrator’s departure less than a week before his contract expired, but they approved a severance agreement for him at Tuesday’s board of trustees meeting.

Marshall Hayes first came to KIshwaukee College in 2007 as head of the college’s foundation.

He tendered his resignation June 24 to college President Laurie Borowicz, and it was effective that same day. His contract ran July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2016.

Borowicz would not talk about the circumstances surrounding what appears to be Hayes’ abrupt departure, only to say that “he decided to resign.”

According to his contract, the college would have had to let Hayes know by May 1 if the college didn’t intend to renew his contract.

Borowicz would not say whether Kishwaukee College had intended to renew it.

“I don’t have a response to that,” she said.

The foundation helps provide student scholarships and does fundraising to help support the college, the president explained.

Hayes was paid an annual salary of $93,447.

“There’s really not a lot to talk about; we’re moving forward with the foundation.”

Johnson said that he can’t mention more about the reason Hayes left.

“I know more than I can talk about.

Personnel issues are not necessarily public usually,” Johnson said. “He was a college employee and it was a mutual arrangement that he would resign, and we reached a severance agreement.”

Although trustees unanimously approved the severance plan, the terms of it were not immediately made available because, Johnson said, college officials and Hayes had not signed it.

Bill Nicklas has been tapped as the interim head of the organization. He was first brought on board the college staff in May as Borowicz’s special assistant for strategic partnerships.

That appointment is expected to last six months, and he is being paid $35,000 for his work in that role.

It is unclear whether the new position with the foundation will change any terms of his appointment, including the pay.

Hayes’ exodus came days after the foundation’s associate director, Diane Johnson, quit. She provided a multiparagraph resignation letter June 2 addressed to Hayes stating that her last day would be June 21.

His departure note to Borowicz was two sentences long.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to order former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to serve his entire 14-year prison term when he returns to court for resentencing next month.

But his attorneys want about nine years lopped off the sentence of the man they say has been a model prisoner who’s tutored, taught and counseled fellow inmates while also forming an Elvis-inspired rock band.

The motions filed late Monday are part of a legal battle between federal prosecutors and the former governor’s attorneys over the sentence imposed in 2011 by U.S. District Judge James Zagel after a jury convicted Blagojevich of 18 corruption counts, including attempting to sell the vacant U.S. Senate seat once occupied by President Barack Obama. In March, several months after a federal appeals court panel tossed five of 18 counts against Blagojevich, prosecutors said they would not retry him on those counts and requested that he return to Zagel’s courtroom for resentencing.

Rauner announces education funding formula task force

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner has announced a commission to help overhaul Illinois’ outdated school funding formula.

The Republican told reporters Tuesday that the bipartisan group of 25 people will study the issue and offer a final report to his office and the General Assembly by Feb. 1, 2017.

The complicated way Illinois uses to determine how much money schools receive has long been contentious. The formula was last changed in 1997.

Rauner says commission members will be chosen by him and the four legislative leaders.

Court: Chicago officer shouldn’t get job back

CHICAGO – A Chicago police detective should not regain his job after he was fired over a photo that made it appear he and another officer had hunted and killed an African-American man, an Illinois appellate court has ruled.

The court on Friday upheld the Chicago Police Board’s decision to fire Timothy McDermott for violating three department

counseling for soon-to-be-released inmates. He talks almost daily to his family on the phone, quizzing his children to help them prepare for exams. Dozens of fellow inmates also have offered letters of support, including one prisoner who credits Blagojevich with helping him reconnect with his daughter. U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois and Bob Barr, a former congressman from Georgia, were among those who submitted letters asking for leniency.

And in an effort to share in his youngest daughter’s interest in music, Blagojevich has studied guitar and vocals, Goodman said. Well known for his love of all things Elvis Presley – his life-sized statue of Presley was auctioned off after he went to prison – Blagojevich formed with another inmate a band called “The Jailhouse Rockers.”

In its own 14-page filing at midnight Monday, the U.S. attorney’s office said that “nothing in the dismissal of the five counts undermines the need for a very significant sentence ... to deter current and future public officials from engaging in similar criminal activity.”

They also said that Blagojevich has never taken responsibility for his crimes.

All of which sets up what will certainly be a huge media event in the same courthouse where the former governor

rules: bringing discredit on the department, disrespect of a person, and unnecessarily displaying a weapon, the Chicago Sun-Times reported .

McDermott appealed a Cook County judge’s 2014 decision to uphold his firing. The appellate court found the police board’s ruling was not arbitrary or unreasonable.

CHICAGO – Chicago’s Navy Pier turns 100 later this week and the date will be marked with cake, Shakespeare and fireworks.

Goodman said that Blagojevich will certainly address Zagel, but it has not yet been determined whether he will be brought to Chicago or speak via a teleconference from prison. But, he said, Blagojevich’s family plans to attend the hearing.

A defense memo asks Zagel to drastically reduce Blagojevich’s sentence to “in the neighborhood of” five years of incarceration accompanied by a period of supervised release. It cited, among other things, his model behavior in prison.

At the same time, Goodman revisits old unsuccessful arguments during Blagojevich’s trial, including the contention that Blagojevich was only seeking campaign contributions to “advance his political agenda” and not for personal gain.

Zagel is not expected to significantly reduce one of the longest corruption sentences ever imposed in Illinois. Even in its ruling last year, the appeals court did not hint that the sentence should be reduced. In fact, it indicated that even without the tossed convictions the 14year sentence was appropriate. It also suggested that Zagel might have gone too easy on Blagojevich.

$1.4M grant will help seasonal farmworkers

CHICAGO – Illinois is receiving

nearly $1.4 million in federal funds to help seasonal farmworkers with housing and job training.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin announced the U.S. Department of Labor grant on Monday. It’s part of $81 million in funds being distributed nationwide as part of the department’s farmworker jobs program.

The Illinois Migrant Council will use the money to help agricultural workers and their families learn new skills and have better housing options.

Durbin calls it “good news for farmworkers and agricultural producers.”

He says “It helps ensure that our state has a highly skilled agricultural workforce, and it honors our promise that those who help bring food to our tables shouldn’t have to struggle to put food on theirs.”

NATION BRIEFS 3 arrested in ‘credible threat’ to harm officers

BATON ROUGE, La. – Police arrested three suspects and were seeking a possible fourth suspect accused of stealing several handguns as part of what authorities Tuesday described as “substantial, credible threat” to harm police officers in the Baton Rouge area.

The arrests come at a time of heightened tensions after the deadly police shootings of black men in Baton Rouge and Minnesota and the killing of five police officers in Dallas last week.

Baton Rouge authorities discovered the alleged plot while responding to a burglary at a pawn shop early Saturday, Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie said. The first suspect arrested told police that “the reason the burglary was being done was to harm police officers.”

AG Lynch defends Clinton email inquiry decision

WASHINGTON – Attorney General Loretta Lynch deflected a barrage of Republican questions Tuesday about her decision not to prosecute Hillary Clinton for her use of private email, saying it “would not be appropriate” to discuss the matter as the nation’s top law enforcement official.

GOP members of the House Judiciary Committee voiced frustration, with the panel’s chairman, Bob Goodlatte of

Virginia, telling Lynch her reticence was “an abdication of your responsibility.”

Lynch repeatedly referred the committee to last week’s testimony by FBI Director James Comey, who gave an unusually detailed account of the investigation in a nearly five-hour appearance before another House panel and described the rationale for his advice that no charges be brought.

Report: Paterno ignored boy’s Sandusky complaint

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, told by a teenage boy in 1976 that assistant coach Jerry Sandusky molested him in a shower, responded that he didn’t want to hear about it and had “a football season to worry about,” according to court documents unsealed Tuesday.

The boy, now a man identified as John Doe 150, said in 2014 that other boys in a shower heard him yell that Sandusky had just touched him sexually.

He said he told several adults about it before seeking out Paterno.

Excerpts of the testimony were among dozens of documents made public Tuesday in Penn State’s fight with an insurance company over payments to Sandusky’s accusers. Sandusky was convicted in 2012 of dozens of child sexual abuse counts.

Sanders finally backs Clinton, calls her ‘far and away the best’

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – With hugs and handshakes, Bernie Sanders endorsed Hillary Clinton for president Tuesday and emphatically told his supporters their “political revolution” must now turn to electing his Democratic former rival.

Sanders bestowed his long-awaited support before a boisterous New Hampshire crowd, declaring he wanted to make it “as clear as possible as to why I am endorsing Hillary Clinton.”

He congratulated her for securing enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination and vowed to do everything he could to help her defeat Republican candidate Donald Trump.

“This campaign is not really about Hillary Clinton, or Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders, or any other candidate who sought the presidency. This campaign is about the needs of the American people and addressing the very serious crises that we face,” Sanders said.

He added: “And there is no doubt in my mind that, as we head into November, Hillary Clinton is far and away the best candidate to do that.”

As Sanders delivered the endorsement just two weeks shy of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Clinton offered a huge smile, embracing him as they raised their arms in unity. The former secretary of state said the final four months of the campaign would be “much more enjoyable” working alongside Sanders and echoed her

campaign slogan, “We are stronger together.”

During much of her remarks, Clinton embraced many of Sanders’ causes, vowing to oppose trade deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, fight to raise the federal minimum wage – adopting Sanders’ tone, she called it a “starvation wage” – and overhaul the campaign finance system.

“These aren’t just my fights. These are Bernie’s fights. These are America’s fights,” Clinton said.

Sanders has vowed to continue on until the convention; and even though he endorsed Clinton, he still is an active candidate, his campaign said after the joint appearance.

Spokesman Michael Briggs said Sanders still supports holding a roll call vote at the convention to determine the nomination.

Democrats have coalesced around Clinton’s candidacy since she defeated Sanders in primaries last month in California and five other states, helped along by endorsements from President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and others. In a high-profile rally last month, Clinton was embraced by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a liberal stalwart popular with Sanders’ followers.

Sanders has spent the past month seeking to influence the party’s platform for the Philadelphia convention and promote electoral reforms including allowing independents to participate in future primaries. He called the platform “the most progressive” in history and hailed steps to create a $15 an hour minimum wage, prevent Wall Street malfeasance and address climate change.

Some protesters, meanwhile, questioned why Obama rushed home from Europe this week to attend the service in Dallas before meeting with the com-

In a gesture aimed at the answering that, Obama telephoned members of the families of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, the men killed in confrontations in Baton Rouge and suburban St. Paul, as he flew to Dallas.

The White House said Obama worked late into the night on his speech, consulting Scripture for inspiration..

After years of delivering emotional pleas for peace at similar memorials, Obama acknowledged his fatigue and the limits of his words on Tuesday.

“I’m not naive,” he said. “I’ve seen how inadequate words can be in bring-

ing about lasting change. I’ve seen how inadequate my own words have been.”

When he has doubts, he said, he remembers a passage from Ezekiel, in which the Lord promised to take “your heart of stone, and give you a heart of flesh.”

“With an open heart we can learn to stand in each other’s shoes and look at the world through each other’s eyes,” Obama said. “So that maybe the police officer sees his own son in that teenager with a hoodie, who’s kind of goofing off but not dangerous. And the teenager, maybe the teenager will see in the police officer the same words, and values and authority of his parents.”

Obama sought to reassure the nation that he understands the impact of the unsettling events of the past week – including the killing of two black men by white police officers as well as the Dallas attacks.

Disturbing videos of the events have “left us wounded and angry and hurt,” he said.

“It is as if the deepest fault lines of our democracy have suddenly been exposed, perhaps even widened.”

Undaunted, the president urged Americans to cast aside such doubt and replace it with faith in the nation’s institutions and progress.

“Dallas, I’m here to say we must reject such despair. I’m here to insist that we are not as divided as we seem. And I know that because I know America. I know how far we’ve come against impossible odds,” he said.

The president spoke steps away from the chairs left empty for the five men killed last Thursday while protecting hundreds of people protesting the killings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota. The Army veteran killed by police after the Dallas attack said he was motivated by revenge.

“The soul of our city was pierced,” Mayor Mike Rawlings said, as he welcomed the president and a line of public officials, including Bush, who attended with his wife, Laura, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, and Brown. The group on stage capped the ceremony by holding hands and swaying to the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” – a symbol in sight and song of the service’s unity theme.

“Too often we judge other groups by their worst examples, while judging ourselves by our best intentions,” Bush said. “And this has strained our bonds of understanding and common purpose.”

No impasse, but a setback for Rauner

There is no end in sight for contract talks with the state’s largest union.

State employees represented by AFSCME can put their strike plans on hold now that the state’s Labor Relations Board has rejected management’s request that it declare talks have reached an impasse.

Meeting in a special session Friday, the five-member board unanimously rejected Gov. Bruce Rauner’s request to bypass an administrative law judge’s recommendation and find there is no benefit to be gained by further negotiations between the parties.

The board’s decision blocks, at least for now, management’s option to impose its final offer on the union, a move that has led to widespread strike talk in Springfield.

The issue now goes back to the hearing officer, who will make a recommendation on the impasse question that the board can either accept or reject.

Union leaders were delighted with the board’s decision because, AFSCME leader Roberta Lynch said, “it maintains a process designed to allow for full consideration of the complex issues in this case.”

Jason Barclay, counsel to the governor, expressed disappointment but said he will “continue to respect and follow the Labor Board’s decisions throughout.”

The board’s action may have surprised union supporters, but it’s hard not to conclude that contract talks are at an impasse.

Indeed, it seems obvious.

AFSCME and management have met nearly 70 times without success.

While the union has indicated it’s negotiating in good faith,

Barclay has been quoted as saying that AFSCME “has categorically rejected the governor’s core proposals.”

At the same time, the union has accused Rauner of not negotiating in good faith and trying to break the union.

In response, Rauner has noted that he’s reached collective bargaining agreements with 17 unions representing 5,000 state employees.

AFSCME is, by far, the state’s largest union, representing nearly 40,000 state employees.

Used to winning generous salary and benefit packages in contract talks, AFSCME is facing different circumstances in its negotiations with Rauner. He has said repeatedly that Illinois is broke and has no money to give AFSCME. The contract agreements the governor’s office reached with the other unions provide no salary increases for four years but do include financial incentives in the form of bonuses.

It’s that approach that AFSCME has flatly rejected, setting the stage for acrimony both at the negotiating table and in the General Assembly.

AFSCME is intent on dragging matters out as long as it can because its contract, which expired a year ago, was extended with its benefit provisions intact, most importantly its health insurance benefits. Rauner is asking AFSCME members to pay more for their health insurance in any new agreement.

While not a towering defeat, the board’s ruling is a serious setback for Rauner, another reminder that trying to change the status quo is a tremendous challenge.

– Historian Arthur Schlesinger As these words are written, I am on a cruise ship pulling into the harbor of the Greek island of Crete. All around me, the morning sparkles. The water is placid, the sky is clear and pale blue, our ship is embraced by gently sloping hills dotted with houses and shops.

And I just turned on the TV. And I just heard about Dallas.

I have made it a point to keep the news at something of a distance these last two weeks of travel, filling my days instead with shell craters on a beach in Normandy, a shopping square in Barcelona, the ghostly remains of Pompeii. So while I know that two African-American men were killed by police under dubious circumstances in Louisiana and Minnesota a couple of days ago, I haven’t seen the videos, haven’t checked too deeply into the circumstances.

I’m off the clock now. I wanted to keep the horror at arm’s length.

But distance is an illusion, isn’t it?

That’s what I just learned when I made the mistake of turning on the television.

Indeed, sitting here in this picturesque place on this peaceful morning far away, it feels as if I can see the madness of my country even more clearly than usual.

Two more black men shot down for no good reason in a country that still

Last night, I called my sons and grandson to tell them I love them, explain to them yet again that they terrorize people simply by being and plead with them to be careful. I am required to fear what might happen to my children when they encounter those who are supposed to serve and protect them.

That’s madness.

That’s madness.

The usual loud voices of acrimony and confusion are already using this act of despicable evil to delegitimize legitimate protest by conflating it with terrorism, asking us to believe that speaking out against bad cops is the same as shooting cops indiscriminately.

That is madness.

And then, there was this coda: A black man, a “person of interest” turns himself in to police after carrying an AR15 rifle through the protest in Dallas.

An AR-15.

Through downtown Dallas.

As police are dealing with an active

shooter.

Apparently, the guy was not guilty of a crime, but he is certainly guilty of the worst judgment imaginable – and lucky to be alive. But then, in carrying that war weapon on a city street, he was only exercising his legal right under Texas law. The NRA calls that freedom.

But make no mistake: It, too, is madness.

America has gone mad before.

The quote at the top is from one such period, 1968. Hundreds of urban riots had wracked the country, the war in Vietnam was uselessly grinding up lives, recent years had seen the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Medgar Evers and Malcolm X. Now, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy had just been murdered within two months of one another.

And many people were wondering, as Arthur Schlesinger was, about America and its character, about what kind of country – and people – we were. Said New York Mayor John Lindsay, “This is a drifting, angry America that needs to find its way again.”

His words, like Schlesinger’s, feel freshly relevant to this era, almost 50 years down the line.

There is a sickness afoot in our country, my friends, a putrefaction of the soul, a rottenness in the spirit. Consider our politics. Consider the way we talk about one another – and to one another.

Consider those two dead black men.

Consider those five massacred cops.

Deny it if you can. I sure can’t. Something is wrong with us. And I don’t mind telling you that I fear for my country.

On the night Martin Luther King died, two months almost to the day before he himself would be shot down in a hotel kitchen, Bobby Kennedy faced a grief-stricken, largely African-American crowd in Indianapolis and with extemporaneous eloquence, prescribed a cure for the sickness he saw.

“My favorite poet,” he told them, “was Aeschylus. And he once wrote, ‘And even in our sleep pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God.’ What we need in the United States is not division. What we need in the United States is not hatred. What we need in the United States is not violence and lawlessness, but is love and wisdom and compassion toward one another and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer in our country, whether they be white or whether they be black.”

Those words feel hopelessly idealistic, impossibly innocent and yet, wise, gracefilled and ... right for the raw pain of this moment. I commend them to all our wounded spirits on this shining morning from a peaceful place that, as it turns out, is not nearly far enough away.

Now, let’s talk about that ‘good guy’ with a gun ...

The solution to a bad guy with a gun, it is often said, is a good guy with a gun.

Yet according to Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, there were 20 to 30 good guys openly carrying guns among the protesters whom Dallas police were supervising Thursday night, when Micah Xavier Johnson began picking off officers.

“In the middle of a firefight,” the mayor said Sunday, “it’s hard to pick out the good guys and the bad guys.”

In fact, the presence of so many guns could have made Thursday’s massacre worse. Officers did not know where the shooting was coming from, how many people were involved or what kinds of weapons they were facing. Innocent

protesters publicly toting guns became immediate suspects. Their presence fed the confusion and amped up the danger.

Yes, guns can be properly and effectively used in self-defense. But saturating the nation with firearms also primes the country for deadly violence, making many situations more likely to end in death. Potential suicides are more likely to succeed. Deranged and angry people, such as Johnson, can murder trained law enforcement officers from a distance. Curious children accidentally shoot themselves, their friends or their parents. Domestic abusers kill family members before tempers cool or authorities arrive. Police officers see or fear guns in the cars they pull over, and

their adrenaline starts pumping.

Debate about gun laws spikes after mass shootings because their carnage reminds us that guns are uniquely and efficiently deadly, and pitifully under-regulated relative to the risks they pose. Yet gun violence in the United States is also unacceptably mundane, taking one or two lives at a time, all the time, with little fanfare and few headlines – just an ambulance carrying away the corpse of another battered wife, another child, another mentally ill person who felt she had no other option. Some of these deaths would happen even if the nation had sensible gun laws. Many would not.

Partly because of gun advocates’

pressure on research organizations, public health experts have relatively little data on gun violence. But the research that exists increasingly shows there are effective measures that reduce gun deaths without materially infringing on law-abiding people’s liberty: deny firearms to domestic abusers, for example; perform serious background checks on would-be gun buyers; require that gun owners obtain a license. Such measures would not stop every person bent on doing harm. They might not have prevented the Dallas massacre.

But by making guns less easily available and less ubiquitous, they would make society safer.

RICHMOND, Va. – The National Federation of State High School Associations has told its members to adopt a rule regulating the number of pitches a high school pitcher can throw in a game.

The federation did not proscribe a specific number. NFHS director of sports and student services Elliot Hopkins said Tuesday that it simply wants local associations to legislate a pitch count by next season. The rule will go into effect in the spring of 2017.

Every state plus the District of Columbia is a federation member, Hopkins said, with governance over the largest, typically public association. Each state except Michigan has its own sports medicine advisory committee that likely will be involved in settling on a specific number.

SAN DIEGO – Chris Sale owned Kris Bryant during the Cubs third baseman’s rookie season, and the White Sox left-hander threw him a pretty good pitch after recording two quick outs in the first inning of the All-Star Game on Tuesday night.

A 96 mph fastball down low and on the inside corner is nothing to be ashamed of, but Bryant, a good low ball hitter, ripped it into the left-field seats in an otherwise snappy and AP photo clean first inning for Sale.

“It’s awesome,” said Quintana, the Sox starter who was expected to pitch in the middle of the game for the AL. “I’m more excited than nervous because I have a lot of confidence in my preparation. I’m excited.’’

Quintana, a big fan of the Red Sox’s David Ortiz, said he talked to Big Papi on Monday, as he does whenever the Sox play Boston. Quintana felt honored that his first All-Star Game was Ortiz’s last.

“I think he’s the best player in the big leagues and he’s had an awesome career,’’ Quintana said.

Plenty of colleges offer softball. But one that offers rodeo, men’s volleyball and women’s wrestling is an athlete’s school – or at least that’s how Jessica Townsend sees it.

The recent Kishwaukee College graduate and DeKalb alumna signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Missouri Valley College, an NAIA program, next season.

“It’s really like an athlete’s school,” Townsend said. “They have a whole bunch of different sports – rodeo, men’s volleyball.

So I was attracted to that. I also like the feel.

It’s a small school, but big enough for me. I really liked [fifth-year coach Daniel Allen], as well.”

Townsend hit .376 with 32 RBIs and 16 steals for the Kougars this year. The center fielder also had 11 outfield assists and was named to the Region IV District B all-region second team.

She also earned an Exemplary Academic Achievement Award, awarded by the NJCAA. She said she’s majoring in exer-

cise science and plans on going to graduate school for physical therapy.

The school is located in Marshall, Missouri, about a seven-hour drive from DeKalb and about 90 miles east of Kansas City. She said it’s an exciting opportunity to attend school so far from home after the 10-minute trip Malta is from DeKalb.

“It’s definitely something I’m looking forward to,” Townsend said.

“I’ve been at Kishwaukee the last two years, and it’s been nice to be at home, but now it’s time to get away. I’m happy about that. It’ll be good for me to grow being on my own.”

Townsend said Allen told the team all the positions are up for grabs. Although the Vikings field junior-varsity and varsity teams, she said she expects to be contributing to the higher level immediately.

She said the past two years under coach Joe Karasewski and the entire Kougars athletic department made her next two years possible.

“I made a ton of friends and I love my coach,” Townsend said. “(Kishwaukee athletic director) Craig Jackson helped me out a lot, too.

It was a pretty good experience here.”

Harrison denies using PEDs, sends affidavit to NFL

The Associated Press Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison said in an affidavit sent to the NFL that he never met nor communicated with the source of a media report that linked him and other players to the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Harrison has insisted that league officials have to provide “credible evidence” before he agrees to an interview. The NFL Players Association sent a letter on Harrison’s behalf along

with the signed affidavit to NFL executive Adolpho Birch on Monday.

“Neither the CBA nor the Policy state that a player must agree to an in-person interview based upon random, baseless verbal remarks or face discipline for a failure to cooperate with a league investigation,” union James attorney Heather M. Harrison McPhee wrote.

“In the absence of the existence of any documented, credible evidence,

this affidavit constitutes reasonable cooperation by [Harrison].”

The other active players implicated by the Al-Jazeera report are Green Bay linebackers Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers, and free-agent linebacker Mike Neal, who played the past six seasons with the Packers. Peyton Manning, who is retired, also was cited in Al-Jazeera’s doping report in December.

The NFL first notified Matthews, Peppers, Harrison and Neal about its investigation into the report Jan. 11.

Al-Jazeera America reported allega-

tions by Charlie Sly, who worked as an intern at an anti-aging clinic. But Sly later recanted his claims.

“I have met thousands of people during my career, but to the best of my knowledge and recollection, I have never met the individual who is apparently named Charles Sly,” Harrison said in the affidavit.

The 38-year-old Harrison, who was The Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year in 2008, also said: “I have never violated the NFL Policy Performance Enhancing Substances.”

Kempny coming off big 1st season in Russian league

CHICAGO – Michal Kempny is not Artemi Panarin. Let’s get that out of the way first.

It’s unrealistic and unfair to expect Kempny to have the same kind of instant impact and spectacular rookie season that Panarin had when he made the jump from the KHL to the NHL. Few ever have. But Kempny – a 25-year-old Czech defenseman – is not coming to Chicago to wait and learn, either. He’s here to play in the NHL right away.

“I don’t want to disclose what was said to me, whether I’m going to play or not,” Kempny said through an interpreter when asked whether the Hawks had guaranteed him a roster spot when

he signed in May. “But I’m here to prove that I can play in the NHL. I’m here to play in the NHL, because it was my dream for so long. I’m here to work myself to the ‘A’ team.”

The signings of Kempny and veteran Brian Campbell have turned the Hawks’ biggest weakness into a strength. With Campbell likely to be on the second pairing with Brent Seabrook, the Hawks’ third pairing likely will be Kempny and Trevor van Riemsdyk – a signifiMichal cant step up from the Kempny rookie rotation that occupied that pairing for much of last season. Time for other Penn St. coaches to speak up

There are people who know things.

People who can corroborate or discredit, who can clarify what really happened at Penn State, and how the university gave cover to child molester Jerry Sandusky for so long. Enough with the constant legal sophistry coming out of Valley.

The attention will center, as it invariably does, on Paterno, and an alleged victim’s statement that the head coach “didn’t want to hear that stuff” when he tried to report Sandusky molesting him in 1976. There’s probably no way to verify the claim – and it’s a distraction from the real import of the depositions released Tuesday in a civil case between Penn State and an insurance agency over who should pay 32 victims. The statements were taken under oath, under penalty of perjury, and what they swear is that a wide variety of Penn State coaches and officials had indications Sandusky was a child predator, only for the alleged victims to be silenced or ignored.

Some of these people can no longer speak for themselves; Paterno died in 2012, and former athletic director Jim Tarman has dementia. But other coaches named in depositions are alive and well. Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano is one, and UCLA defensive coordinator Tom Bradley is another, and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers special teams coordinator Kevin O’Dea is yet another. To be sure, these men were not individually responsible for Sandusky, and they were Paterno’s underlings; no one could or should blame them. But what’s clear is they can help victims understand Penn State’s climate, why it was not conducive to believing reports and taking action against

Such is the fine line Biles, her family and longtime coach Aimee Boorman have been trying to walk in the run-up to Rio. Although they have taken steps to maximize the potential a golden moment in Rio would provide – Biles turned professional last spring – they also have been careful in creating internal expectations focused more on the process than the end result.

“She could quit tomorrow and still be a world champion,” said Boorman, who coaches at the aptly named World Champions Centre, the state-of-the art training center/passion project the Biles family opened in suburban Houston last fall. “We tell her that as people want to put pressure on her to win the Olympics, that’s their pressure, not hers.”

For Biles, it’s not about her scores.

Biles doesn’t pay much attention to them. It’s not about winning, maybe because every meet she has entered since the 2013 U.S. championships has ended the same way: with Biles atop the podium ducking her head so the latest medal to her ever-growing collection can be draped around her neck.

It’s not even about her highly GIFable routines either, the ones that leave her peers in awe. If Biles is being honest, she doesn’t even know the formal terms for some of the skills she does anyway.

“They’re like, ‘Oh, you did a ...’ and I’m like, ‘I did a what?’ ” Biles said.

The greatest gymnast Mary Lou Retton has ever seen is a wonder.

She has the power to get such height on the vault it seems as if she’s bungee jumping from the roof.

She has the energy to make the final tumbling pass of her boundary-pushing floor exercise – when most of her peers are breathless and counting the seconds until the music stops – as fresh as her first.

She has the poise to flip and swoop and turn on a 4-inch-wide slab of wood 4 feet off the ground so fluidly it’s like an X Games version of ballet.

“The God-gifted ability of explosiveness and just her athleticism, you can’t teach that,” said Retton, the 1984 Olympic champion. “You cannot teach that.

You can teach somebody to be a little bit more graceful. You can teach someone more skills, but you can’t teach that special unique quality that Simone has.”

Get ready to know Simone Biles.

In her sport, the live-wire 19-year-old from Spring, Texas, enjoys first-nameonly status, the byproduct of a threeyear run of dominance that includes 14 world championship medals with a record 10 golds and three all-around titles.

“We’re joking she should have to compete with the guys,” Retton said.

“She’s so good. She pushes it. She’s just special.”

If still somewhat anonymous outside of the buzzing fans who inhabit the social media-driven gymternet. For all of the awe Biles inspires, the one thing – really the only thing – Biles lacks is that Olympic moment of triumph with the world – the whole world, not just part of it – watching.

“It’s that Olympic all-around gold medal, the Queen Bee, the most important,” Retton said. “Yeah, I think she needs it as part of her repertoire.”

There is no denying Biles’ excellence. She never could turn another backflip and her spot in her sport’s pantheon would be secure. Yet to the public, she remains somewhat unknown.

It took her two world titles before Twitter would verify her. Her followers – in the 82,000 range — total only 10 percent of those who follow 2012 Olympic champion (and 2016 teammate) Gabby Douglas.

“It’s like you still need that one puzzle piece,” 2004 Olympic champion Carly Patterson said. “It’s just crazy. You really need to have that check mark to be looked at as one of those tops.

The sport’s code of points – overhauled more than a decade ago to get rid of the 10-point system in favor of one designed to great a higher risk/reward factor – forces its competitors to make a choice between aggression and precision. Biles is the rare gymnast who doesn’t have to choose. She can do both.

“If you made it look as easy as Simone, you’d be smiling too,” said former Olympic Bela Karolyi, whose wife, Martha, has turned the U.S. national team into the Harlem Globetrotters in leotards and ceiling-scraping hair buns. “There is no one to compare Simone to.”

On the final night of Olympic trials Sunday night, Biles drilled her intricate Amanar vault and earned a 16.2, the highest of the meet on any event.

The score included a 9.9 mark for execution, as close to perfection as the judges let things get these days. Her two-day total on vault of 32.200 was 1.3 points clear of runner-up MyKayla Skinner, the equivalent of a three-touchdown win in football.

There’s so much cushion between Biles and the rest of the world that even a fall or two like the one on beam Sunday night that briefly set her eyes ablaze – a miscue that would jeopardize the medal hopes of most – is basically no big deal. Not that it mattered to Biles. She’s spent the last three years setting a standard that is uniquely hers, which may be her most remarkable talent of all.

“Typically you can have an athlete that’s head and tails above the rest, they might rest on their laurels a little bit,” said seven-time Olympic medalist Shannon Miller, a member of the 1996 U.S. team that won the country’s first team Olympic gold. “They might slide a little bit. She doesn’t. She’s at the top of her game every time.”

The ultimate stage awaits.

Even though McIlroy hasn’t been a serious contender at the majors since his victory at Valhalla, McIlroy sees no reason for concern. He’s still only 27, an enormous talent who surely has some of his best golf still in front of him.

All of them cited concerns over the Zika virus as the primary reason for staying away. But, while Spieth said Tuesday it was “probably the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my life,” McIlroy was much more cavalier about skipping the Olympics.

“I don’t think it was as difficult a decision for me as it was for him,” McIlroy said. “I don’t feel like I’ve let the game down at all. I didn’t get into golf to try and grow the game. I got into golf to win championships and win major championships.”

When I first started grilling, I had one of those beginner’s luck experiences that made grilled salmon and pineapple a mainstay in my dinner rotation.

I was visiting my uncle in Florida and offered to make dinner. The only thing everyone ate was salmon, so salmon it was. I wanted to give the salmon a sweet-and-sour flavor much like my uncle’s favorite Asian dish. So I marinated the fish, scallions and thick slices of pineapple with traditional Asian seasonings of toasted sesame oil, fresh ginger, citrus juice, rice wine vinegar and soy sauce.

Because there was a fair amount of sugar in the marinade, I grilled the salmon on a cedar plank so it wouldn’t burn and the bottom skin wouldn’t get too fishy.

By contrast, I wanted the whole scallions and the pineapple rings to char in places. I placed them directly on the cooking grate around the planked salmon so the natural sugars would caramelize.

The sweet ingredients in the marinade may promote sticking, so use a wood plank if possible.

If you don’t use a plank, slide two spatulas under the fish – one from each side – and lift, leaving the skin on the grill.

If you like salmon skin, turn up the heat and let crisp for two to three minutes before removing from the grill. If you don’t like the skin, place the burners on high and burn the skin off. Brush

the grates once the salmon skin has turned to “ash.”

Add steamed jasmine rice and you have a grilled meal with an appealing sweet-and-sour yin and yang.

Wild Salmon with Grilled Pineapple and Scallions Grilling method: indirect/medium heat Marinating time: 20 minutes

1 center-cut wild salmon fillet, about 2 pounds 1/2 cup fresh-squeezed lime juice, about 3 juicy limes Juice and zest of 1 orange (about 2 tablespoons juice and 1/2 teaspoon zest) 2 tablespoons unseasoned rice wine vinegar 4 tablespoons toasted sesame oil 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar 3 tablespoons grated fresh ginger, about a 5-inch knob 4 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce 2 teaspoons sesame seeds 1 golden pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into rings 1 bunch scallions, trimmed and cleaned Lime wedges Fleur de Sel Special equipment: Cedar or alder wood plank, soaked in water Remove any bones from the fish with a pair of tweezers; rinse, pat dry and set aside.

Combine the lime juice, orange juice and zest, vinegar,

oils, brown sugar, ginger, soy sauce and sesame seeds in an extra-large heavy-duty plastic food bag. Add salmon, pineapple rings and scallions; seal securely. Rotate to distribute marinade and make sure all the food is covered. Refrigerate at least 30 minutes or up to 1 hour, turning occasionally.

Remove fish, pineapple and scallions from marinade and drain, discarding marinade. (Alternatively, boil the marinade for three minutes and serve as a sauce for the fish.) Lay fish, skin side down, on a soaked cedar plank or directly on a very clean cooking grate. Cook for 10 minutes.

After the fish has cooked for 10 minutes, place pineapple rings and scallions directly over the heat on either side of the fish. Turn pineapple and scallions once halfway during the cooking time, about three to four minutes a side.

Remove fruit and scallions to a clean plate when they are warmed through and marked on the outside.

The fish is done when the flesh is opaque and the stripes between the orange flesh are solid white, about 20-25 minutes.

Transfer the fish to a platter along with fruit. Garnish with lime wedges. Season to taste with salt.

Makes 6-8 servings.

It’s amazing how the weather dictates what we want to eat, isn’t it? Even if you’re not consciously trying to cook with the seasons, you want braises and stews when it’s cool out, and food that is lighter and brighter when it’s warm.

This decidedly warm-weather salmon is bathed in an olive-oiland-herb mixture and cooked at a fairly low temperature to let it cook through without browning, and give it a very tender texture. Then it’s perched on a pile of spring-y greens – you can use any baby lettuce mix you like, or create your own.

Mix that with a pile of additional fresh herbs, toss with some fresh lemon juice and good olive oil, and the whole thing tastes like late spring has willed itself into a meal.

Would I eat this in November?

Sure. But I am craving it now.

Sometimes I like salmon to be browned and crispy, but in this case I was going for a more delicate, poached texture so the herbs would retain their color, and the whole dish would be soft and gentle. Summer is peak season for wild Alaskan salmon, which has a more pronounced salmon flavor than farm-raised; I used Coho salmon here, with a deep, rich, reddish-orange color.

Grab it when you see it.

You could cook the salmon ahead of time and let it cool to room temperature. Then dress and assemble the salads just before cooking, which makes this a great recipe for a relaxed summer lunch.

Herbed Salmon and Salad Start to finish: about 35 minutes Servings: 4

Salmon: 4 6-ounce salmon fillets 5 scallions, white and light green parts only, cut into 1-inch pieces 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons fresh dill sprigs 1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves 1/2 teaspoon coarse or kosher salt, plus more to taste Salad: 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Kosher salt to taste 6 cups baby salad mix, or a mix of purs-

lane, butter lettuce, Boston lettuce and mache, for example 1/2 cup whole fresh parsley leaves 1/4 cup sliced chives Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Spray a baking pan with nonstick spray, or lightly oil the pan. Place the salmon filets in the pan.

In a small food processor, blend together the scallions, olive oil, dill, parsley leaves and salt. Spread the mixture over the salmon, and bake for about 16 to 18 minutes, just until the salmon is barely cooked through and flakes easily. Let cool for a few minutes in the pan, until just warm.

For the salad, in a large bowl, mix together the lemon juice and olive oil, plus

salt to taste. Add the lettuces, parsley leaves and chives, and toss. Divide the salad between 4 plates and place a piece of salmon atop each pile of greens, removing the skin if you wish. Serve while the salmon is warm, or at room temperature if you prefer.

If it’s already time to start gearing up for school – and if you’re open to rethinking the typical lunch box fare, consider losing the sandwich and embracing the stuffed egg.

There’s nothing more elemental and satisfying than good bread, but the standard loaf is loaded with empty calories.

Eggs, by contrast, are low-carb, high-protein and gluten-free. And just about anything you can slide between two slices of bread can also be stuffed into a hard-cooked egg.

Still, I’m not talking about the typical version, loaded with mayo and a sprinkling of paprika. I mean eggs filled with any number of more substantial, and tastier, ingredients – from tuna or avocado to chicken or roast beef.

First, how to boil an egg. As a student of Julia Child, I spent decades “boiling” eggs the way she taught us, which was, in fact, not to boil them. She started by putting the eggs in a pot of cold water, then brought the water up to a boil. Next she turned off the heat, covered the pan and let the eggs sit until they were hard-cooked. Finally, to stop them from cooking, she pulled the eggs out of the pot and chilled them briefly in a bowl of ice water. This method results in egg whites that are more tender than if they had been conventionally boiled.

Then a few years ago, I heard from a couple from Chicago who suggested steaming the eggs. This method turns out to be easier to time than the noboil method because you don’t have to wait for the water to heat up. But much more important is the end result: the whites are ridiculously tender.

Hard-Boiled Eggs

Start to finish: 40 minutes (5 minutes active) Servings: Makes 6 hard-boiled eggs 6 large eggs Fit a collapsible steamer inside a medium saucepan and fill the saucepan with about 1 inch of water or to just below the level of the steamer basket. No water should be touching the eggs. Put the lid on top of the pan and bring the water to a medium-high boil over medium-high heat.

Using a large, long-handled, slotted spoon, place the eggs in a single layer in the steamer, being careful not to burn your hand with the steam. Steam the eggs for 12 minutes.

Transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice and water and let them cool completely. This will take 20 to 30 minutes.

When they are cool, crack them all over and peel under cold running water, starting at the wide end of the egg and making sure to get under the membrane (which makes it easier to peel the egg).

Tuna or Salmon Stuffed Eggs Servings: 12 stuffed egg halves

One 3.5 ounce can tuna or regular salmon, or smoked salmon, drained 6 large hard-boiled eggs 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons minced celery, plus celery leaves for garnish In a medium bowl mash the tuna with a fork until it is in small flakes. Cut the eggs in half and remove the yolks.

Add the yolks to the tuna and mash the mixture well. Stir in the mayonnaise, lemon juice and celery; salt and pepper to taste. Mound a heaping spoonful of the yolk mixture into the cavity of the whites and garnish with the celery leaves.

Nutrition information per serving: 86 calories; 56 calories from fat; 6 g fat (1 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 99 mg cholesterol; 68 mg sodium; 0 g carbohydrate; 0 g fiber; 0 g sugar; 7 g protein.

Guacamole Eggs

Servings: 12 stuffed egg halves 1 medium ripe Hass avocado (about 3/4 cup) 6 large hard-boiled eggs 3 tablespoons minced scallions 2 to 3 teaspoons minced serrano chile (with the seeds and ribs) or to taste 1 tablespoon mayonnaise 2 to 3 teaspoons fresh lime juice, or to taste Coarsely chopped cherry tomatoes, sprinkled with kosher salt for garnish In a medium bowl, mash the avocado with a fork until it is mostly smooth with a few lumps. Cut the eggs in half and remove the yolks. Add the yolks to the avocado and mash the mixture until it is smooth. Stir in the scallions, chile, mayonnaise and lime juice. Salt and pepper to taste.

Mound a heaping spoonful of the yolk mixture into the cavity of the whites and garnish with the chopped tomatoes.

If you do take allergy medicines (antihistamines, nasal steroids and so forth), start taking them several weeks before you anticipate your allergy season will start. Clinical trials have demonstrated this strategy is more effective than starting the medicines after you already have developed symptoms.

The best medicines for moderate to severe nasal allergy symptoms are nasal sprays of medicines called glucocorticoids.

Antihistamine pills also are effective. The older “first-generation” pills are more likely to cause side effects than the newer pills.

Some antihistamines come as nasal sprays and also are effective. Finally, a nasal spray of a medicine called cromolyn also is effective.

Summer should be about beauty and warmth – not nasal allergies. Some combination of these approaches should help you.

For me, that means one thing: allergies. Can you give me some specific advice to help keep my allergies under control?

Dear Reader: Inhaled pollen, from trees, grass and weeds, is responsible for hay fever. These allergens get into the air – and into our noses, eyes and lungs –causing the symptoms allergy sufferers dread.

It takes only a minuscule amount of pollen to trigger an allergic reaction. And pollen is everywhere during allergy season, impossible to avoid completely. As a result, many people find medication is necessary.

But taking steps to reduce your pollen exposure also can help to lessen the severity and frequency of your symptoms.

Many people check pollen counts on weather apps or websites so they know what to expect on a given day. These can be of some help. But pollen counts can fluctuate depending on things such as the weather or time of day. For example, they’re usually lower on cooler, rainy days. And they’re usually higher in the morning, particularly on warm days.

Trees and plants are very consistent in the levels of allergens they release into the air. In the Northeast, where I live, the pollen season starts in February or March and ends in October. In southern states it starts earlier and ends later. In northern climates, trees kick off the season, followed by grasses and finally weeds.

Here are some ways to minimize your pollen exposure: • Stay indoors when the pollen count is high, especially on dry, windy days.

• Stay indoors between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., when airborne pollen counts are likely to be at their highest.

• Keep windows closed during allergy seasons, and turn on the air conditioner.

• Keep car windows closed when driving.

With a side four-card major, the textbooks tell you not to pre-empt.

But these days, experts are more flexible. Also, when you have a 7-4 shape, open with a game-bid. Either you will buy a good dummy and make game, or you won’t and even the three-level will be too high.

South has 11 potential winners: two spades, six diamonds, one club and two heart ruffs in the dummy.

After the heart-ace lead and spade shift, declarer wins that trick, cashes the diamond ace to see the 3-0 break, and leads his club to dummy’s queen and East’s ace. Back comes another spade.

South wins in his hand, ruffs a heart with the diamond seven, discards his last spade on the club king, trumps a club, ruffs the heart queen with the diamond eight, draws trumps, and claims.

If only West had led a spade initially, he would have defeated the contract -- tough.

Finally, note that five hearts doubled would probably go down only two -- also tough, because it is rarely right to bid five over five.

PUBLIC NOTICE Ordinance 2016-23 AN ORDINANCE FIXING CHARGES FOR LIFE SUPPORT EMERGENCY AMBULANCE SERVICE PROVIDED BY THE MALTA FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT, DEKALB COUNTY, ILLINOIS WHEREAS, upon the recommendation of the District Fire Chief, the Board should establish current reasonable costs for providing life support ambulance service, such services defined in herein; and WHEREAS, at the general election held on April 7,2015, which election was called, noticed, held and conducted in accordance with the general election law of the State of Illinois, the Malta Fire Protection District, DeKalb County, Illinois was authorized to levy a special tax for the purpose of providing emergency ambulance service; and WHEREAS, the District provides, or causes to be provided, an emergency ambulance service within to points outside the District; and WHEREAS, Section 22 of the “Fire Protection District Act” “70 ILCS 705/22” authorizes the Board of Trustees (the “Board”) of the District to “fix, charge and collect fees for emergency ambulance service within or outside of the fire protection district not exceeding the reasonable cost of the service”; and WHEREAS, the Board finds that District residents pay taxes which contribute to the District's operation of emergency ambulance service; and WHEREAS, the Board finds that many non-residents of the District request and are provided emergency ambulance service when they are within the jurisdiction of the District without contributing to the expense of providing such service; and WHEREAS, the Board finds it is in the best interest of the citizens and residents of the Malta Fire Protection District that residents who are provided emergency ambulance service when they are within the jurisdiction of the District be charged for the emergency ambulance service provided; and WHEREAS, the Board finds that it is reasonable and proper to charge residents of the District and non-residents of the District for emergency ambulance service provided to them; and WHEREAS, the Board finds that the reasonable cost of providing basic life support emergency ambulance service to residents of Malta Fire Protection District is $425.00 per call and the reasonable cost of providing advanced life support level 1 emergency ambulance service to residents of Malta Fire Protection District is $550.00 per call and the reasonable cost of providing advanced life support level 2 emergency ambulance service to residents of Malta Fire Protection District is $750.00 per call and the reasonable cost of providing advanced life support refusal emergency ambulance services to residents of Malta Fire Protection District is $200.00 per call, and an additional $10.00 per transport mile, and such other reasonable charges for additional available services, as may be from time to time approved by the Malta Fire Protection District Board of Trustees; and WHEREAS, the Board finds that the reasonable cost of providing basic life support emergency ambulance service to non-residents of Malta Fire Protection District is $575.00 per call and the reasonable cost of providing advance life support level 1 emergency ambulance service to non-residents of Malta Fire Protection District is $850.00 per call and the reasonable cost of providing advance life support level 2 emergency ambulance service to non-residents of Malta Fire Protection District is $1000.00 per call and the reasonable cost of providing advanced life support refusal emergency ambulance services to residents of Malta Fire Protection District is $200.00 per call, and an additional $10.00 per transport mile, and such other reasonable charges for additional available services, as may be from time to time approved by the Malta Fire Protection District Board of Trustees; and NOW, THEREFORE, be it ordained by the Board of Trustees of the Malta Fire Protection District, DeKalb County, Illinois, as follows: SECTION 1: The preambles of this Ordinance be and the same are hereby incorporated in the text hereof as if set out herein in full.

SECTION 2: Each person receiving basic life support emergency ambulance service who is a resident of Malta Fire Protection District shall pay the sum of $425.00 per call for said service, and an additional $10.00 per transport mile, and such other reasonable charges for additional services, as may be from time to time approved by the Malta Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, within thirty days of being billed thereof.

SECTION 3: Each person receiving advance life support level 1 emergency ambulance service who is a resident of Malta Fire Protection District shall pay the sum of $550.00 per call for said service, and an additional $10.00 per transport mile, and such other reasonable charges for additional available services, as may be from time to time approved by the Malta Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, within thirty days of being billed thereof.

SECTION 4: Each person receiving advance life support level 2 emergency ambulance service who is a resident of Malta Fire Protection District shall pay the sum of $750.00 per call for said service, and an additional $10.00 per transport mile, and such other reasonable charges for additional available services, as may be from time to time approved by the Malta Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, within thirty days of being billed thereof.

SECTION 5: Each person receiving advance life support refusal emergency ambulance service who is a resident of Malta Fire Protection District shall pay the sum of $200.00 per call for said service, and such other reasonable charges for additional available services, as may be from time to time approved by the Malta Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, within thirty days of being billed thereof.

SECTION 6: Each person receiving basic life support emergency ambulance service who is not a resident of Malta Fire Protection District shall pay the sum of $575.00 per call for said service, and an additional $10.00 per transport mile, and such other reasonable charges for additional available services, as may be from time to time approved by the Malta Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, within thirty days of being billed thereof.

SECTION 7: Each person receiving advanced life support level 1 emergency ambulance service who is not a resident of Malta Fire Protection District shall pay the sum of $850.00 per call for said service, and an additional $10.00 per transport mile, and such other reasonable charges for additional available services, as may be from time to time approved by the Malta Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, within thirty days of being billed thereof.

SECTION 8: Each person receiving advanced life support level 2 emergency ambulance service who is not a resident of Malta Fire Protection District shall pay the sum of $1000.00 per call for said service, and an additional $10.00 per transport mile, and such other reasonable charges for additional available services, as may be from time to time approved by the Malta Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, within thirty days of being billed thereof.

SECTION 9: Each person receiving advanced life support refusal emergency ambulance service who is not a resident of Malta Fire Protection District shall pay the sum of $200.00 per call for said service, and such other reasonable charges for additional available services, as may be from time to time approved by the Malta Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, within thirty days of being billed thereof.

SECTION 10: If any section, paragraph, or provision of this Ordinance shall be held to be invalid or unenforceable for any reason, the invalidity or unenforceability of such section, paragraph, or provision shall not affect any of the remaining provisions of this Ordinance.

SECTION 11: All Ordinances, resolutions or other proceedings in conflict herewith, be and are, to the extent of such conflict, hereby repealed.

SECTION 12: Definitions. The following definitions shall apply to emergency ambulance service charges: Basic life support. Services shall be medical treatment or procedures provided to a patient as defined by the National Emergency Medicine Services (EMS) Education and Practice Blueprint from the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Basic.

Advanced life support level 1. Services shall be medical treatment or procedures provided to a patient beyond the scope of the EMT-Basic as defined by the National Emergency Medicine Services (EMS) Education and Practice Blueprint.

Advanced life support level 2. Services shall be defined as advanced life support services provided to a patient including any of the following medical procedures: (1)Manual defibrillation/cardioversion; (5) Chest decompression; (2) Endotraceal intubation; (6) Surgical airway; or (3) Central venous line; (7) Intraosseous line, and the administration of three or more medications.

(4) Cardiac pacing; Advanced life support refusal. An advanced life support response where at least one advanced life support procedure or piece of equipment is performed or used and the patient or other authorized person on behalf of the patient signs a refusal for further services and/or transport to a medical facility.

Transport mile. The transport mile shall be assessed in statute miles from the location of an incident scene, or center point of a fire demand zone where an incident scene or address is located, to a hospital or other facility where a patient is transported.

SECTION 13: This Ordinance shall become effective on its passage and publication as provided by law.
