Big Brother chillin’ in fridge

It was robin’s egg blue. Its giant door loomed high above my shaggy 8-year-old head, its shiny silver latch just barely within my grasp. It was like a cave with a handle, beckoning for me to enter.

It even had a name printed on it in shiny metallic letters, a name that evoked wonderment tinged with fear: Kelvinator. It was like a villain out of a superhero comic book, as in, “Gadzooks … everybody run for your life … it’s … it’s … The Kelvinator!”

When opened, it exhaled a frigid breath, seeping out in swirling ribbons of transparent vapors. Inside, frosted aluminum shelving held stalagmites of bottles and jars and vessels containing multiple foods and drinks and tastes and flavors … Nehi soda pop and Sara Lee cheesecake and Heinz Ketchup and Del Monte pickles. Plus the ever-present glass pitcher of glistening cherry Kool-Aid. The mysterious freezer compartment, a square-shaped frosty iron box, floated magically in the middle of the upper shelf. Opening it was like stepping into an arctic landscape, amorphous lumps of unidentifiable foodstuffs covered with inches of hoary ice and snow, frozen together like two Popsicles in a double pack.

Well, that’s about as melodramatic a visit to a ’50s refrigerator as I could write. I could have added a scene of me taking a sneak gulp out of the Kool-Aid pitcher, but I still do that with any bulk liquids I find in the fridge.

I once tried to chug brown gravy because I thought it was congealed chocolate milk.

Chewy, but tasty.

But that’s what refrigerators were back in the day: a box with a handle. It had one job, and that was to keep stuff cold. Period.

Of course, there have been some welcome advances in fridge-tech. Like the frost-free freezer, which meant you didn’t need an mountain climber’s ice pick to harvest a Fudgsicle. Or giving the freezer its own separate exterior door to facilitate ice cream sandwich pilfering.

But refrigerators started getting too big for their condensers. They tried to replace the sink faucet with their built-in water dispens-

JUST HUMOR ME Michael Penkava ers. They tried to show up the pots and pans with their stainless steel. They tried to outdo the planet’s ecology with their different temperature zones. And they even started a civil war within themselves as the ice rebelled and moved from the northern freezer to the southern door dispenser.

I guess I could live with all that. But then I saw the commercial about the refrigerator that has cameras inside. Cameras, as in cameras that let you see what’s in the fridge without opening the door. And you can see who is opening the door. And what they’re taking out. And if they’re chugging gravy again. Geesh.

You get an app for your smartphone to go with your smart fridge that shows you all the action that is going on in the fridge. It’s like reality refrigeration. Soon on the web you’ll be able to peek into the iceboxes of the rich and famous …

“Hey, Bill, did you see what Brad Pitt has in his fridge?”

“No, what?”

“Last night I saw a Domino’s Pizza box right next to a pineapple! I’m not kidding!”

Sure, you could be at the grocery store and wonder if you need anything. Then you can use your fridge-cams to check …

“Oops … no milk. I’ll just buy some more.

Wait, that’s why my wife sent me to the store in the first place. Hmm … I wonder what’s in Kim Kardashian’s freezer?”

Yep, cameras in the fridge. Big Brother in the crisper.

DeKalb Public Library project nears completion

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb Public Library is almost set to unveil the second half of its $25.3 million construction project, with restoration of the former library building nearing completion.

The newly built library building opened Jan. 18. The old one, the Haish Memorial Library, is being restored back to its 1930s glory. It was originally built thanks to a $150,000 bequest from barbed wire baron Jacob Haish and is now on the National Register for Historic Places, said Edith Craig, the library’s communications manager.

“It is one of only three art deco libraries in the nation,” Craig said. “So it has not only local history to it, it’s a national treasure as well.”

The restored building will open Sept. 10 in a daylong celebration that will include a ribbon cutting, library officials announced. By the time Pepper Construction’s work is finished in the coming weeks, the combination of the new building and renovated one will more than triple the DeKalb Public Library’s size from 19,500 square feet to 65,000 square feet.

The new building, which opened in January with its bright lighting and open entry and lobby areas, houses the lobby, meeting rooms and children’s and adult materials area.

In the Haish building, the reference room is being converted into a teen area where youth can gather. It will include a sitting room, teen-oriented collections and a gaming system. The old fiction room will house items about the area’s history, among the many changes, Craig said.

“It has cork floors in the same pattern that it had in the ’30s when it opened. The skylight has been cleaned.

The marble inside has been cleaned,” she said.

Additionally, she said, the back office space and the main floor will be the Nancy D. Castle collaboration studio. The stacks that used to be behind the circulation desk had to go because they didn’t meet fire code.

Also, the Kish Health computer lab will be located there.

The grand unveiling will bring closure to the project that was started in July 2014. Things were delayed after the state failed in 2015 to have a budget in place. Without it, the state’s $11.6 million grant payment for the con-

struction work was postponed. The rest of the money came from the city, tax increment financing funds, loans from at least three area banks and private donations, Craig said.

People such as Mayor John Rey look forward to the completed library construction projecting yielding a new gem for the city.

“I think it will be a major attraction to our downtown traffic,” Rey said.

DeKalb council OKs raising ambulance fee on 1st reading

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The fee for DeKalb Fire Department ambulance service could go up by as much $211 if a proposed ordinance is approved by the City Council on its next reading.

Aldermen voted 7-1 at Monday’s City Council meeting to approve the first review of a plan to charge more for ambulance service. Costs are currently stated under DeKalb’s Establishment of Fees in Chapter 9 of the municipal code.

“This fee increase will be applied to the General Fund to assist the city in continuing to create a fiscally sound and sustainable government, while still providing the high level of services to residents of DeKalb,” Cathy Haley, city finance director, told aldermen.

In total, raising the ambulance service cost could net the city $156,711 in additional revenue for the remainder of the calendar year, according to data Haley presented Monday.

In a Wednesday memo, Haley and City Manager Anne Marie Gaura explained to the mayor and City Council members that DeKalb’s ambulance fees are below average, compared with a survey of 100 other service providers. The survey is conducted each year by the Naperville Fire Department.

According to information the city leaders presented to the council, DeKalb charges $445 to $1,090 for ambulance service. The proposal calls for upping that to a range of $656 to $1,202. Costs are billed to private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare or directly to the serviced individual if they have no insurance.

In the city’s fiscal 2015, according to the memo, the fire department had 2,826 calls for ambulance service. People with private insurance or who were paying out of their own pocket represented nearly half of the annual calls for service.

The city already gets the maximum reimbursements from Medicaid and Medicare, city leaders said.

So the new fee would mostly affect private insurance and self-pay users.

DeKalb finance director munity,” said Dwayne Brown, a resident of the 4th Ward who spoke out against the fee increase Monday when the public was invited to address the issue. “This is just another tax. ... The taxpayer needs some kind of break.”

The motion passed and is expected to come up for final consideration at the July 25 meeting. But several alderman also expressed concern that the under- and uninsured could be most adversely affected by the cost increase.

“I don’t want to take someone who can’t afford it and add to their burden,” said 7th Ward Alderman Anthony Faivre, although he was among the seven to vote yes on the measure.

Haley said in cases where people could not afford to pay, they would still get a bill for service, but the city would be willing to work with them – perhaps even not pursuing payment – on the charge.

The ambulance fee is one of two revenue items that were suggested as part of the fiscal 2016.5 budget. The $49.1 million spending plan was approved at the June 27 meeting and carries the city through Dec. 31.

Aldermen also are looking at exponentially increasing the initial application and annual renewal fees for video gaming terminals.

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Spartans logos that Sycamore fans have been long-accustomed to might stick around longer than expected.

The logo was scheduled to be retired Friday, and a new, districtwide logo to take its place, but judges aren’t finished reviewing entries just yet, Superintendent Kathy Countryman said Monday.

Over the years, the district has accumulated a handful of logos that are currently in use. As part of a district communication initiative, artists were invited to submit their own Spartans logo designs online from May 9 through June 15. A Brand Identity Committee – comprised of representatives of the alumni association, sports boosters, music department, athletics, high school administration, district staff and current students – has reviewed the entries and was expected to announce a winner Friday.

“The committee is still collecting entries and will be meeting later this summer, but may extend the timeline into the fall,” Countryman said in an email Monday.

Artists were asked to incorporate the ideas of “bravery, loyalty, strength, community, respect, ferocity and honor,” according to the contest guidelines. The design should also include a family-friendly character and use Sycamore High School’s school colors, black and gold.

The winner will receive Sycamore school “spirit wear” adorned with the design, four football season ticket passes and four performing arts season tickets.

The logo hunt stems from the district’s communication goals.

A November 2015 survey of 526 community members found they wanted a more direct and consistent line of communication with school officials. Other goals inspired by the survey results include an updated website, the creation of a district Facebook page, and better transparency between school administration and parents regarding discussions at school board meetings.

Terrodd Powell, of the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive, is charged with public indecency after at least nine women reported to police that a Terrodd man exposed himself Powell to them in public.

If Powell is convicted of the charges, he could be sentenced to one to three years in prison because one of the incidents occurred within 500 feet of DeKalb High School, court records show.

SYCAMORE – Race cars will be on display downtown tonight for the Tuesdays on the Town Race Car Rally.

The free event, sponsored by KishHealth System, part of Northwestern Medicine, will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with race cars on display around the downtown area.

Somonauk Street will be closed between State and Elm streets during the event; it is designed to be fun for people of all ages. Those in attendance can take their picture with the vehicles and get a tour of the inside.

The Sycamore Chamber of Commerce’s Tuesdays on the Town program includes family-friendly downtown events on the second Tuesday of the month through September. On Aug. 9, the theme will be family fun and fitness, and the Sept. 13 finale will be family agriculture. Those who visit the Sycamore Farmers’ Market in the municipal parking lot off Somonauk on Tuesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. can also receive a coupon sheet with special offers from a dozen downtown businesses.

DeKalb police offer free self-defense course

DeKALB – Registration is now open for a free self-defense class for women and girls being taught by DeKalb police officials.

The class has space for 30 students, who must be 14 or older and DeKalb residents or students at Northern Illinois University or Kishwaukee College who are living in DeKalb, according to a news release from DeKalb police.

DeKalb officer Allison Benthusen and detective Paul Mott will be instructors for the course, which will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 1 through 3. Students will learn about laws and sex assault/rape, defensive tactics and mindset, basic principles for self-defense and more.

There will also be hands-on practice sessions.

Advance reservations are required to participate. Contact Community Relations Officer Kelly Sullivan at 815748-8446 to register. In case of overwhelming response, more classes will be scheduled.

His bond was set at $3,000 Monday. Powell posted $300 bail and was released.

A woman called police Saturday to report that a man in a tan sedan asked her for directions.

She told police she recognized the man from a previous encounter in which the driver asked for directions, then exposed himself, court records show.

Powell was arrested Saturday when police tracked his vehicle, and witnesses positively identified him.

During a police interview, Powell admitted to exposing himself to at least 20 women in the past two months, court records show.

He is due back in court July 26.

Police are still investigating this string of incidents and asking any other victims or witnesses to contact them at 815-748-8400.

Juniors at all Illinois public high schools will take the SAT college entrance exam for free during the 201617 school year, the Illinois State Board of Education announced Monday.

The SAT will replace the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test, which for the past two years had been used to gauge high schools’ progress. Students in third through eighth grades will continue to take State Rep. the PARCC exams, Bob state officials said.

Pritchard “The SAT is aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards and will continue to empower educators to measure college and career readiness,” state Superintendent of Education Tony Smith said in a news release.

For years, college-bound Illinois students took the ACT exam. However, state Rep. Bob Pritchard, a Hinckley Republican, said that when the state solicited bids from both testing companies, the SAT was better aligned with the state’s educational standards and cost several million

less to administer.

“The SAT was a lot cheaper for the state so they went with them,” said Pritchard, whose 70th District includes much of DeKalb County.

“They also offer some services for students that ACT does not offer … so it really seems to be a better test for students.”

Pritchard helped bring about the switch through his roles on the state assessment test task force, as a member of the House Policy Committee and of the Appropriations Committee. He said Illinois will spend $44 million this year to administer standardized tests to students in third through 11th grades.

One thing that high school students made clear at a meeting last year at Sycamore High School was how much they disliked having to take two sets of tests as juniors, Pritchard said.

Doing away with the PARCC exam and making the SAT the standard exam for high school juniors will lessen the testing regimen and give students a free exam that is widely accepted for college admissions.

“To me one of the biggest benefits is one less test in high school,” Pritchard said. “Because that has been a growing concern from students and parents.”

Man with BB gun, knife shot by Decatur police The ASSOCIATED PRESS

DECATUR – A black man who was shot and wounded by police in central Illinois on Monday was armed with a BB gun that resembled a real handgun, police said.

Authorities in Decatur said officers responded to reports of a man armed with a gun around 1 a.m. Police initially said the man was armed with a handgun and a large knife strapped to his wrist.

Interim Police Chief James Getz said during an afternoon news conference that officers later determined the man was armed with a BB gun that resembled a firearm. Getz said Officer Andrew Wittmer, who is white, fired one round that “ended the threat.”

The investigation was turned over to Illinois State Police, as is standard for any officer-involved shooting, Getz said. The police chief said officers’ patrol cars have in-car video that caught part of the encounter. He noted that the officers involved were not equipped

Attorneys set to give Blagojevich sentence recommendations

CHICAGO – Federal prosecutors and defense attorneys faced a midnight deadline for motions regarding the sentence they want former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to receive when his case returns to court for a resentencing hearing next month.

Both sides were given the deadline to file motions on Blagojevich’s 14-year prison sentence in anticipation of the scheduled Aug. 9 hearing before U.S. District Judge James Zagel.

The hearing stems from an appellate court panel’s decision last year to throw out five of the 18 corruption charges for which Blagojevich was convicted in 2011. After that decision, prosecutors decided against retrying Blagojevich on the tossed charges and asked that

Chicago starts park safety program based on 2009 effort

CHICAGO – Chicago officials are launching a new park safety program modeled after a 2009 effort to help kids in at-risk neighborhoods get to school safely.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the new initiative is getting $112,500 from the Chicago Park District and will be similar to Safe Passage.

Workers for that program wear bright vests and monitor children walking to school.

The new program will employ 150 workers hired by Chicago Public Schools who will help children get to and from recreational activities in parks. The program will start this week in 20 parks and be scheduled in late afternoons and evenings around programming for teens.

Cook prosecutors seek new trial in 1996 fatal arson

CHICAGO – Cook County prosecutors said a man convicted in 1996 of a fire that killed two people should get a new trial because advances in science have invalidated previous evidence.

Adam Gray is serving a mandatory sentence of life without parole, the Chicago Tribune reported. Prosecutors from Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez’s Conviction Integrity Unit suggested a new trial for him in recently filed court papers.

Sally Daly, a spokeswoman for Alvarez, cited advancements in fire science as the decision to agree to a new trial even though the evidence collected

by Gray’s attorneys essentially is unchanged since prosecutors opposed a new trial a year ago.

Gray was found guilty of setting fire to a two-flat on the southwest side of Chicago after a girl who lived there rejected

him in March 1993. The girl and her family escaped, but 54-year-old Peter McGuiness and his sister, 74-year-old Margaret Mesa, died.

Two of the nation’s leading fire scientists, John Lentini and Gerald Hurst, evaluated the arson investigation.

Hurst said “alligator” charring and burn patterns found at the scene weren’t indicators of arson and that the fire investigators in the case had failed to do a thorough enough investigation to rule out accidental causes.

Lentini determined that petroleum distillate found in a milk jug in a nearby alley was different from the substance in wood at the scene. He said neither was an effective accelerant.

With information from Lentini and Hurst, prosecutors said one year ago that they still were confident in Gray’s conviction.

They pointed to his confession to buying gasoline to set fire to a two-flat in the southwest side of Chicago as a reason to stand by the conviction. Gray has since denied the admissions, saying he confessed because

Chicago mayor’s aide to leave for private sector job

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s longest-serving aide is leaving his post for a job in the private sector.

Mike Faulman has served as the former White House chief of staff’s personal aide since 2010 when Emanuel launched his first mayoral run in Chicago.

Faulman also worked in the White House.

The 32-year-old Faulman told the Chicago Sun-Times that he plans to join Detroit-based Shinola. The wristwatch and bike manufacturer has announced intentions to open a Chicago factory.

Faulman said that if the mayor had four hands, he’d be two of them. He said he doesn’t have a defined role, but is always two steps behind Emanuel altering speeches and schedules and contacting community leaders.

Faulman earned $82,500 in the city post.

DALLAS – When Micah Johnson opened fire on Dallas police in an act of vengeance against white officers, he was attacking a department whose chief has been lauded across the country for taking bold steps to root out bad cops and repair relations with minorities.

Police Chief David Brown, a black man who pushed through the reforms despite resistance from the rank-and-file, boasted at a news conference Monday that crime, police shootings and excessive-force complaints against the department have all dropped dramatically on his watch.

“This is the best department in the country, and I’m proud to be associated with the men and women of the Dallas Police Department,” he said.

Johnson, a black Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, killed five officers in a sniper attack Thursday that he portrayed as payback for the fatal police shootings of black men last week in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and suburban Minneapolis. The attack ended with Johnson blown up by a bomb delivered by a police robot.

No evidence has come to light to suggest that the 25-year-old Johnson had a grudge specifically against the 3,400-officer Dallas Police Department.

“Dallas PD is paying the price for problems elsewhere around our country,” said Mohamed Elibiary, a former Texas-based Department of Homeland Security adviser.

Carlyle Holder, president of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice, had been holding up the Dallas Police Department as an example of a law enforcement agency effectively addressing the problem of racial disparities in police work.

“That’s what made the killing of those officers so much harder to take,” he said.

Brown became chief in 2010, taking over a department that a generation ago had one of the highest rates of civilian shootings in the country. In 2012, his efforts to heal the rift between police and the black community took on greater urgency when the killing of a black man by a white officer triggered widespread protests.

The chief responded by creating a public database to track shootings by police, requiring officers to undergo lethal-force training every two months instead of every two years, and firing 70 officers involved in questionable incidents, including some who faced charges of excessive use of force.

The biggest backlash has come in the last six months, when Brown started a community policing program in mostly Hispanic and black neighborhoods. He began reassigning officers from desk jobs to foot patrols, a move

that was praised by criminal justice experts but angered the police unions, who demanded his resignation.

“We need more boots on the ground, absolutely,” said Mike Mata, vice president of the Dallas Police Association. “The problem is he was reassigning detectives from the office to back on the streets without any retraining.

It’s almost like you set them up for failure.”

The dispute further strained a department that Brown said is one of the lowest-paid in the region, with new recruits making $43,000 a year, and has had such trouble recruiting officers that academy classes are frequently canceled for lack of participation.

While attending the University of Texas at Austin on a full scholarship, Brown became motivated to enter law enforcement when he returned to Dallas in the early 1980s and found friends from the neighborhood caught up in a cocaine epidemic. Months after he became chief, his 27-year-old son, David Brown Jr., was shot to death by police after killing two officers.

“I’ve been black a long time,” Brown told reporters Monday. “We’re in a much better place than when I was young man here, but we have more work to do, particularly in my profession.”

In the south Oak Cliff neighborhood where Brown grew up, for example, 12 officers on the beat regularly introduce themselves to residents – a dramatic shift for a community that had been accustomed only to seeing officers responding to a crime. One of the team’s priorities is to help convicted felons find jobs.

“We knew we couldn’t arrest our way out of the situation,” Maj. Thomas Castro said.

Since the community policing strategy was instituted in January, violent crime in the neighborhood has dropped 10 percent, he said.

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Quad Cities couple looking to start a Mexican restaurant at the space formerly occupied by Cabana Charley’s said the business could be open as soon as August.

Francisco and Lesly Morales have big plans for their familyowned Mexican restaurant, Los Panchos, which is set to open in the 1470 S. Peace Road lot next month.

“Their eyes are wide open and they’re excited about having their own place, and we are, too,” Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said. “We hope they do well there.”

Cabana Charley’s closed in September 2015. Derick Ibarra opened Charley’s Video Gaming a few months before the restaurant closed in a 1,200-square-foot space adjacent to the restaurant. It has five gambling machines.

Los Panchos’ Class A liquor license was approved June 29, Mundy said. Though the Mexican restaurant will take up most of the building, Charley’s Video Gaming will remain open as an autonomous business in the lot next door.

Los Panchos will offer a lunch

menu that includes 11 $6.65 specials comprised of combinations of burritos, enchiladas, rice, quesadillas and tamales. The restaurant also will be open for breakfast and dinner.

“We have a really good menu – a lot of items on the menu,” Francisco Morales said. “It’s more from the south, southern Mexican food.”

Although Morales said the building is currently is undergoing some indoor remodeling, the business has not submitted an application to Sycamore’s building and engineering department, Director John Sauter said.

The space has been updated to include a new bar and stone wall.

With the moving process underway, the restaurant is expected to be open the first week of August, Morales said.

Although the Moraleses have never owned a restaurant, both have years of restaurant experience and have served the industry in a number of capacities, he said. Now it’s time for the couple to make something of their own, and share it with the rest of town.

“I worked for six or seven years,” Morales said. “We just decided to go on our own.”

Proceeds from the ninth annual KishHealth System, now part of Northwestern Medicine, Physical Therapy Center 5K Run/Walk, which was held on May 21, were donated to Adventure Works of DeKalb County.

The event raised $3,300 with an additional contribution by KishHealth System for a total donation of $6,300.

The overall winner was Scott Marisette of Sandwich with a time of 18:17. The women’s winner was Leah Davis of Evanston with a time of 20:52. Although the event was very competitive for a number of runners, it was also meant for each individual to test his or her personal fitness abilities.

race food, water, stretching, music and a number of raffle prizes. “A highlight this year was the participation of the Girls on the Run program. They had 74 girls along with their running buddies participate,” Chris Laurent, race director, said in a news release. “This group, along with their supporters, really added to the festive atmosphere.”

Honoring fallen Dallas officers Today President Barack Obama will address an interfaith memorial service in Dallas for the five police officers – Lorne Ahrens, Patrick Zamarripa, Michael Krol, Michael Smith and Brent Thompson – who were killed in a horrifying ambush Thursday night.

The president, who was on a series of official visits to U.S. allies in Europe last week, has been criticized at times for fanning the flames of discontent among minority communities. However, it is likely that anger would exist whether the president gave it any credence or not.

The videos the public saw last week on the TV news and on the Internet were jarring glimpses of men in their last moments. Although it’s important to note that both incidents remain under investigation, many saw the footage and concluded that Alton Sterling and Philando Castile had been killed unnecessarily by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Falcon Heights, Minnesota.

Even among those who came to that conclusion, who see them with anger at what they believe is systemic injustice toward poor people in minority communities, most are horrified at the acts of the lone gunman who told police he wanted to kill white cops.

As the shots rang out on in Dallas, protesters ran for their lives, while police rushed to stop the threat.

Nearly all of us recognize that police and the jobs they do on a daily basis are essential to our communities. Our safety and security is due in large part to our local law enforcement officers, who assume the sometimes dangerous burden of keeping the peace.

The system and its agents, including police, should not be presumed to be beyond reproach.

There are bad actors wearing uniforms and badges. Complaints about police tactics should not be brushed off as mere political correctness, or people looking to make excuses for criminal behavior.

They do not constitute a “war on cops,” no matter what former Illinois Congressman-turned-talkshow-host Joe Walsh might say.

Rhetoric that stirs the sort of violence against police that horrified the nation last week is also toxic, however. Police are there to help, a fact realized clearly by many of the protesters Thursday in Dallas.

Dallas police had not shot and killed anyone this year at the time of the attack.

Many people have come forward to show support for the Dallas police and their local officers in the aftermath of this tragedy, with blue ribbons, meals, hugs and other expressions of gratitude. Today’s memorial no doubt will be emotional.

We support the police as well, and the dedication it takes to fulfill their everyday mission to serve and protect their fellow citizens.

Zika arrives and Congress shrugs Members of Congress, in case you missed it: Florida health officials confirmed on July 1 the largest count of people with new infections of the Zika virus, 10 on that day. Then, on July 6, 11 new cases.

In all, at least 263 people in Florida have been infected since January, of which 43 have been pregnant women. In the United States, there are now 1,133 people who have been infected, including 320 pregnant women.

The mosquito-borne Zika virus, for which there is no effective vaccine or cure, is mild in most people but can cause a serious birth defect known as microcephaly, as well as other fetal neural damage.

Florida is a bellwether, close to Latin America, origin of the current epidemic. Tom Frieden, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warned July 6 that “at current trends thousands of pregnant women in Puerto Rico will catch Zika.” While so far all cases in the United States appear to have been brought by travelers, local transmission may begin soon.

The virus also spreads through

sexual contact.

Five months have passed since President Obama requested nearly $1.9 billion in emergency funds to help states fight Zika. After stalling for months, the Republican-controlled House approved a $1.1 billion Zika aid bill laden with partisan baggage, including restrictions on the use of money for birth control services, a backdoor way to defund Planned Parenthood, and $750 million in offsetting cuts from other programs, including Obamacare and the Ebola virus response effort.

The White House threatened a veto, and Democrats balked in the Senate. They had earlier brokered a clean Zika bipartisan compromise bill in that chamber, without restrictions.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who pledged to end partisan gridlock at the outset of this Congress, told Democrats on June 28 they had no choice but to accept the GOP version. “There are some disadvantages to not being in the majority – you don’t get everything exactly the way you want,” he said.

Yet McConnell lacks 60 votes to get the heavily freighted GOP bill through the Senate.

So another week of gridlock has passed, without action to combat Zika: helping states and local jurisdictions with the difficult mosquito eradication effort; researching new vaccines; improving diagnostics; and educating the public, particularly pregnant women, about the risks.

Now there is little time for Congress to act before it goes on summer recess, not to return until September. We agree with Sen. Patty Murray, D-Washington: “Stop wasting time on the Senate floor with political red meat.”

Now is the moment to set aside the maneuvering and blame-throwing and negotiate a truly bipartisan compromise – without poison pills, without cuts in other programs – to give public health officials the tools they need. The United States does not need or want a generation of brain-damaged babies.

But Congress must act fast to keep that from happening.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Actually, Comey is an investigator, not a prosecutor, but in the circumstances he was forced to function like one. He would decide whether the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee would be prosecuted.

He probably felt the same way about this as I imagine a local state or federal judge feels when he is called on to decide a credentials challenge at a Republican or Democratic national convention. Such cases are always thrown out of court.

Judges don’t say so, but I’m sure they’re thinking something like this: Who am I, a local judge, to decide who should be the nominee of a major party for president of the United States?

I wasn’t appointed or elected to make that kind of decision. Leave it to the delegates and the voters.

It would be surprising if Comey, with his sterling reputation and knowing the likely political ramifications, didn’t feel the same way. A Clinton indictment would probably mean she

would be shoved aside by the Democratic Party, in favor of the obvious substitute candidate, Joe Biden.

You can argue that this would have been better for the Democrats in November. Before he announced his noncandidacy in October, Biden was running stronger than Clinton in presidential pairings. He has plenty of White House experience. He is, to put it mildly, more likeable than she is. So far as anyone knows, he doesn’t use a personal email server for government communications.

But getting Clinton delegates to vote for Biden might have been a messy process. Bernie Sanders supporters would surely have argued that their man, having finished a pretty strong second in votes and delegates, should get the nomination. The ruckus might cost the Democratic ticket votes in November.

But so might many passages in Comey’s statement, if they are hammered home by Republicans. He showed how she lied again and again and again about her email system. He showed that she violated the letter of the law.

Her fans are treating her nonindictment as a triumph, another attempt by hateful Republicans to tarnish the wondrous Clintons foiled. Nothing to see here; time to move on.

Maybe not.

Clinton’s dishonesty may already be priced in by the electorate, with 60 percent or more of voters considering her dishonest and untrustworthy. And there are many voters who believe she’s better on the issues and/or that Donald Trump is dangerously unreliable who are willing to overlook her dishonesty.

But it’s also possible the minuet we’ve witnessed, from the tete-a-tete on the tarmac to the particulars of the Comey nonindictment, will sap the morale of many Democratically inclined voters.

Majorities have negative feelings about both presumptive nominees, and current polling shows 15 percent not voting for either in two-way pairings – significantly above the 9 percent figure at this point in the 2012 race – and 22 percent supporting neither if Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Jill Stein are presented as alternatives.

Democratic turnout has been declining during the Obama years, and Clinton’s nonindictment isn’t likely to boost it back up.

To the Editor: The Illinois General Assembly passed a temporary budget on June 30. The budget funds K-12 education for an entire year and provides funds for higher education institutions, state departments including corrections, health care accommodations and capital projects to keep operations ongoing until the beginning of 2017 or until a more permanent solution is found.

A permanent solution will have to reverse a course Illinois has been on for a long time. Decades of mismanagement have sent this state in a tailspin and it’s up to us to correct our course.

Right now, Forbes Magazine ranks Illinois 38th best state for business.

An Illinois resident moves out of the state every 10 minutes. Jobs are not plentiful, property taxes are too high, and our state needs to have reforms.

To make things worse, past legislatures and governors expanded a pension system that is funneling too much money toward benefits rather than improving Illinois.

For the past few decades, decisions were made in favor of special interest groups. Governors had few options but to agree to unaffordable benefit packages, legislatures skipped pension payments, and cred-

it ratings were downgraded as debt accumulated.

Even changes that have been made, including modifications to the workers’ compensation system, did not prove beneficial to reducing unwarranted costs to employers because of special interests. Illinois must find a balanced approach to foster a better climate for families and businesses.

Gov. Bruce Rauner is suggesting policy changes that would bring Illinois from 38th best state to the middle of the pack. If we look at pensions, there are options that would not be subject to court approval, such as increased penalties for pension-spiking and the elimination of double-dipping. We are also suggesting property tax relief.

By implementing some of the recommendations made by the local government consolidation and unfunded mandates task force we can provide relief to local government entities. Lastly, we recommend workers’ compensation reform. Indiana’s workers compensation costs are 50 percent less than ours.

When businesses have a choice, it is clear why they choose somewhere other than Illinois.

This isn’t a race to the bottom; it’s about making common-sense workers’ compensation reforms to bring Illinois to the middle of the pack to protect injured workers, improve job growth, and business development.

The legislature needs to build on our bipartisan

movement and continue to negotiate in good faith.

We can make Illinois competitive again without drastic changes.

After a successful heart transplant and four long months at Lurie’s Children’s Hospital, Ricky De la Cruz made it home to DeKalb.

Unindicted co-conspirator: Technically, the term, made familiar in the Watergate scandals, does not apply to Hillary Clinton, since no one has been or apparently will be indicted in the emails case.

But if you read the bulk of FBI Director James Comey’s statement, it’s plain that Hillary Clinton and her top aides conspired to do things that violated the law. And yet Comey made it clear she would not be indicted.

Comey said that “no reasonable prosecutor” would indict her, even though the facts he set out show that she violated section 793(f) of the criminal code.

That section does not require criminal intent but imposes liability in cases of “gross negligence.” It’s hard to distinguish that from Comey’s description of the conduct of Clinton and her aides as “extremely careless.”

Can Comey’s decision be justified?

Well, consider the position he was in.

On June 30 it was revealed that Bill Clinton had met with Attorney General Loretta Lynch two days earlier on her official plane on the tarmac of Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport. She says they talked about grandchildren and golf. But the obvious message was: If you don’t indict her, you can keep your job in the Clinton administration.

MOOSEHEART – College soccer usually is the end of the line for athletes looking to play at an advanced level, but a team out of Aurora has changed that for a trio of local players.

The Aurora Borealis Soccer Club began play in the Premier League of America this year. So, for someone such as Colby Newquist – a 2007 graduate of Sycamore – he went from playing in recreational leagues to a semi-pro league under a Chicago Fire Hall of Famer C.J. Brown.

“It’s been unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in my entire life,” Newquist said. “I’ve played a lot of different places, had a lot of different coaches, but nothing like this. It’s above and beyond what I think most people will experience in their life.”

Newquist isn’t the only local player on the club. Anthony Parra, a 2009 graduate of Genoa-Kingston, and Sergio Noriega, a 2009 graduate of Rochelle who now lives in DeKalb, also are on the roster.

The team is 2-7-1 heading into its final two games of the year. Borealis plays its home games at Mooseheart High School in North Aurora. Newquist said most of the games have been close, and their lopsided record hasn’t put a damper on the experience – including playing for Brown, who played 13 years with the MLS’ Fire, starting most of that time.

“We thought he’d be extremely intense and on everybody’s [butt], and that’s the impression most people [had] when we came into it,” Newquist said. “But he’s incredibly laid back, intelligent, jokes around. He takes it seriously, obviously, but he has a great relationship with everyone. ...

He’s a great coach and he knows so much about the game. Not just the tactical but the huge mental side of the game, which we never really got in college.”

The league is in its second year, and Borealis is in its inaugural season. Team Vice President and Director of Operations Gibran Rodriguez said there are plans to expand the league next year beyond its current borders.

– although some teams in the league do pay their players. Parra played at Kishwaukee College and Aurora University after high school – in fact, Parra, Newquist and Noriega all played for the Kougars before the school discontinued its soccer program.

“Being able to do that with these guys, and being able to travel, instead of by car, by coach bus, to have everything paid for at hotels when we need them – it’s a very, very cool experience,” Noriega said. “It’s something to just enjoy and be blessed for being able to have the experience.”

Parra, who missed more than half of the season with a hamstring

injury, said the competition level was stiffer than he imagined it would be.

Newquist, who played at Northern Illinois and Aurora after Kishwaukee, agreed.

“It’s been a fantastic experience,” Newquist said. “A lot of people don’t even get a chance to play in college, that’s usually where it stops and then you play in Friday night leagues.

But to go on to play semi-professional, especially coming from such a small town. Most of the guys come from your Napervilles, your Neuqua Valleys. But to come from Sycamore, DeKalb or Rochelle has been amazing.”

Earnhardt Jr. the top name CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Dale Earnhardt Jr. candidly declared two weeks ago that he has too good of a race team to be worried about making NASCAR’s playoffs.

Since then, he has produced underwhelming finishes at Daytona and Kentucky, and slipped to 13th in the Sprint Cup standings.

IN THE Earnhardt hasn’t scored a PITS top-10 finish in Jenna a month and, Fryer yes, he is indeed in danger of missing the championship Chase.

With eight races remaining to complete the 16-driver field, Earnhardt ranks third among drivers who have yet to secure a win this season but are ranked high enough to make the Chase. It’s not a safe position by any means: Earnhardt has slipped from seventh in the standings since May and has led only four laps since mid-March.

He’s not the only driver in a precarious position. Because 11 drivers have won races so far this season, any first-time winners in the next two months will claim the remaining five Chase berths. Among those looking

Continued from page 18 or won’t be enough. I’m not really going to lose any sleep over it, at least at this moment. When we miss the Chase, it’ll be frustrating and disappointing, but we’re going to plan on not doing that. We’re going to plan on making it.”

In the coming month, Earnhardt could gain some traction at Pocono, where he has two career victories, finished second in June and has seven consecutive finishes of 11th or better.

He also has won at Bristol, Michigan and Richmond, where the Chase field will be finalized Sept. 10. Even if he doesn’t get a win, mediocre results at his strong tracks should be enough to get Earnhardt into the Chase.

EARNHARDT’S TEAMMATES

NEWMAN

He is the sneaky driver in this field and successfully has made the Chase the past three seasons. Despite not winning a race since 2013, Newman was runner-up in the championship in 2014 and made it to the second round of the Chase last year. Now he’s on another quiet run toward a Chase berth. Newman has climbed from 18th in the standings in May to 12th, and he’s ranked behind only Elliott among winless drivers. Also in his favor? He’s really good at Indy, where he’s got one career victory and five consecutive finishes of 12th or better.

THE YOUNG GUYS

NASCAR has high hopes for the future of the Cup Series with fresh talent in Elliott, Dillon, Blaney and Larson. Of that crop, Elliott is having the best year, but the others have shown flashes of stepping it up a notch.

Dillon is on the Chase bubble at 14th in the standings and only one point below Earnhardt. His season is up one week, down the next, and he needs consistency to maintain his footing.

Blaney is ranked 18th in the standings and probably is the longshot for victory lane. He has yet to lead a lap and only has six top-10 finishes, but Ford has turned it up of late and he’s got de facto Penske teammates Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano to lean on for assistance.

Larson might be the first of the group to get a win, which would be long overdue.

He has been erratic since his 2014 rookie campaign, although his drop-offs are much shorter now. He was third at Michigan, followed by 12th at Sonoma. Then he was sixth at Daytona, followed by 19th at Kentucky.

If he’s going to make his first Chase, he either needs a string of top-10 finishes, or to finally get that first win.

Elliott is having a very nice rookie season and has climbed from 10th in the standings in early May to as high as sixth. He currently is eighth, the highest-ranked driver without a victory, but three consecutive finishes outside the top-20 weakened his position.

What could work against Elliott is a lack of experience at some of the upcoming tracks. He’s yet to run a Cup car at

New Hampshire, site of Sunday’s race, or Watkins Glen. Elliott has been to Pocono in a Cup car only once, same with Indianapolis. But he won Xfinity Series races at Darlington and Richmond, so both tracks are very familiar.

Kahne is in much rougher shape at 17th in the overall standings, but seventh among winless drivers.

Kahne has only one win in almost three full seasons, and he’s not exactly knocking on the door of victory lane. He’s finished in the top-five only twice this season and has yet to lead a lap.

He’s likely going to need to steal a win somewhere to have any shot at making the Chase.

Sale honored to start for AL

SAN DIEGO – Ned Yost said his decision was “real easy.”

Easy? Perhaps. That’s because facing Chris Sale, whom Yost named as the American League starting pitcher for tonight’s All-Star Game at Petco Park, is anything but.

Watching the White Sox ace left-hander from a spectator’s viewpoint is baseball eye candy, Cubs righthander Jake Arrieta said, which is another Chris Sale reason Sale (143, 3.38 ERA), the major leagues’ wins leader, was a good choice by the Kansas City Royals manager to take the ball first in baseball’s July spectacle.

“Sale is one of the most fun guys to watch in baseball,’’ Arrieta said. “With his deception, the funky arm angle, the 7-foot slider he throws. … And he throws from low to upper 90s, and that’s not easy to deal with.

He can throw a no-hitter every time he touches the mound.

Whether you’re a Cubs fan or Sox fan, for the city of Chicago, it’s going to be fun to watch that guy pitch and to see our guys go against him. That will be awesome.”

Even if Sale only pitches an inning, he’ll face at least two Cubs, with Ben Zobrist leading off and Kris Bryant batting third in Mets manager Terry Collins’ National League lineup.

“He’s ready to go this year,” said Yost, who said he would have started Sale last year had he not thrown 115 pitches against the Cubs the Saturday before the All-Star Game.

“For me, it was a real easy choice.”

An All-Star and a top-six Cy Young voting finisher in of each the four seasons he’s been a starting pitcher, Sale was humbled by Yost’s selection, as expected as it was.

“What an honor,” Sale said.

“I can’t put into words what this means.”

It seemed equally meaningful for the 27-year-old face of the Sox franchise to have teammate Jose Quintana not only added to the team Sunday, but also being lined up by Yost to participate in the fifth inning. The AL will go with Sale, Indians righthander Corey Kluber, Rangers left-hander Cole Hamels, Rangers right-hander Aaron Sanchez and Quintana in the first five innings, a lefty-righty-lefty alignment, before turning the game over to relief pitchers.

Yost talked up the importance of home-field advantage in the World Series, which is at stake in the game, and made it clear he’s going all-out to win.

Sale will get the ball rolling by going all out, as well.

“Planning on letting it eat for a minute, really,” Sale said.

“Just getting after it. There are no repercussions that come from the game other than having fun and competing. That’s all I’m going to try to do. I don’t know what pitches I’m going to throw. I’m going to rely on my catcher (Salvador Perez) like I always do.

“I know what it means and I know how much fun I’ve had in the past, so I’m just going to try to go out there with some energy and start the game off on the right foot for the guys.”

Sale will be the first Sox to start since right-hander Esteban Loaiza in the 2003 game at U.S. Cellular Field.

He planned on watching, along with his young son and family members, teammate Todd Frazier defend his Home Run Derby title Monday night and soak in everything else for a couple of days here.

“I’ve had fun, I really have,” Sale said, reflecting on his relatively short but hugely successful career. “I’ve had a lot of good people, a lot of good mentors and coaches along the way to get me to where I am. This wasn’t me just figuring it out on my own.

I’ve had people pushing me in the right direction, teammates and family and coaches. So I’m just very appreciative of all that put together to get me to this point where I am today.”

dvanschouwen@suntimes.com’ SAN DIEGO – White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier advanced to the finals of the Home Run Derby for the third consecutive year but was denied in his bid to repeat as champion Monday at Petco Park.

On the eve of today’s All-Star Game, Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins stole the show with 20 homers in the final round to finish with a record 61. Frazier, batting last, hit 13 in the last round. Frazier got off to a slow start in the final with three homers in the first minute, then strung together four after a timeout.

“It was impressive,” Frazier said. “I said it would be an epic home run battle, and it stepped up to the name.

“I thought I had a chance when I needed 20, but he deserved it. He put on a great show. I hope everybody enjoyed it.”

Stanton hit one shot estimated at 497 feet.

Like Frazier, the three-time All-Star is not playing in tonight’s Midsummer Classic.

Two of Stanton’s blasts hit the third level of the Western Metal Supply Co. Building brick warehouse in the left-field corner. Two landed near the left-field scoreboard.

“Check the bat,” Frazier said in jest, smiling. “There was something going on there.

Frazier defeated Carlos Gonzalez in the first round and Adam Duvall in the second. Frazier hit his 13th with nine seconds left in the first round to edge Gonzalez. With his brother, Charlie, again throwing to him and many of their families’ kids on the field and in the clubhouse, Frazier said a good time was had by all, even in defeat.

“When I’m done playing, I hope I can look back and say I did everything [in baseball],”

he said. “I feel fine. I’ll look back on this and see it as a plus.”

Sale’s tribute to Gwynn: Chris Sale went out of his way at the All-Star news conference to pay tribute to Padres legend Tony Gwynn, a Hall of Famer who played 20 seasons in the majors – for the Padres – through 2003.

Sale said he gave up smokeless tobacco when Gwynn died of salivary gland cancer in June 2014 at age 54.

“He actually made a very big impact in my life. I chewed tobacco from 2007 until the day he passed away,” Sale said. “I remember seeing that, and just being so shocked.

because of his late notice – he was added to the AL team Sunday – but got to the media session nonetheless.

“I feel like I’m in a dream,” the Sox left-hander said. “I’m so happy to be here.”

Quintana, never one to talk himself up, said he was deserving. And winloss record (7-8) aside, he probably is right, with a 3.21 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 18 starts. Quintana ranks fifth in the AL in ERA and sixth in innings (1172/3) and WHIP (1.11). He has been remarkably consistent as a starter with ERAs of 3.51, 3.32 and 3.36 his previous three seasons.

SAN DIEGO – Jake Arrieta would just as soon enjoy a four-day rest during the All-Star break than pitch in the game, even if it is the Cubs Cy Young winner’s first one.

He didn’t deserve to start, he said, and all things considered, the best thing for him – Arrieta has been off his Cy Young game for a while – is to sit back, relax and take in the festivities from the sideline.

And to put his feet up.

“I wouldn’t mind Jake Arrieta taking four days off and then throwing two bullpens to get ready for my next start,” said Arrieta, who was considered to be a candidate to get the starting nod that went to San Francisco Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto. “That’s the direction I’m leaning. If they need an arm, though, and we can’t get enough innings, I’ll be out there.”

Arrieta (12-4, 2.68 ERA) said Cueto, 13-1 with a 2.47 ERA and 10 straight winning decisions since April 21, deserved the start.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a disappointment,” Arrieta said. “I’m realistic. My last three starts were poor. Cueto has been terrific. If I take care of business the last three, I probably start. [Mets manager Terry] Collins had a tough decision to make, but he made a good one with Cueto.”

Arrieta is not alone among the Cubs, who have seven suited All-Stars, including their entire infield, but aren’t exactly busting their buttons with pride on the national stage. They’ve lost 15 of their past 21 games, a remarkable skid for a team that roared to a 25-6 start.

“The biggest thing is, we needed a break,” said All-Star lefty Jon Lester (12-6, 3.01), roughed up for five runs in three innings by the Pirates and for eight runs in 11/3 innings by the Mets in his past two starts, a two-game thumping that annihilated a sparkling 2.03 ERA. “This break will be good for a lot of people.”

As Arrieta catches his breath, he seems to be soaking in the moment of being here and reflecting on his rise from struggling right-hander to one of the game’s elite. During his media session at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Monday, he spoke of the All-Star honor as a Cy Young moment in the middle of the season.

“It kind of feels like I finally got to where I knew I was going,” he said. “Doesn’t mean the work is over, it means that things are starting to pay off and I can step back for a minute and enjoy it.

“It’s been a journey, man. I had to deal with a lot of stuff early in my career. I had to change mechanically four or five times, and my mental approach, and that’s tough to do at the big league level. That’s why the journey has been so strange, because I reinvented myself at the big league level and not in A ball or Double-A where the spotlight isn’t near as great. You can make those adjustments without the pressure. At the end of the day, I wouldn’t change it because without the struggles of 2012 and ’13 I wouldn’t be here.”

Perhaps the Cubs’ struggle will have some value in the last 21/2 months of the regular season.

“We’ll get back to it,” Lester said.

“We have too good of a staff and too good of a defense to play where we’re at right now. We’ll be fine. The biggest thing is we all realized we weren’t going to keep that pace up all year. This game humbles you quickly.”

Schmaltz, Motte hoping to graduate to NHL

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Nick Schmaltz and Tyler Motte could have gone back to college.

Schmaltz could have stayed at North Dakota and defended the national championship. Motte could have tried to build on the staggering numbers he put up at Michigan and made a run at the Hobey Baker Award as the nation’s top player.

But Jonathan Toews needs wingers.

And he needs them now.

“It’s no secret to anybody that there’s going to be guys that get opportunities here in the near future,” Motte said Monday after Day 2 of the Blackhawks’ prospect camp at Johnny’s IceHouse West.

“That definitely factored in quite a bit.”

Every player at prospect camp, from the first-round picks to the nonroster invitees, dreams of playing in the NHL some day. For players such as Vinnie Hinostroza – at his fifth camp – it’s

about getting back there and, this time, sticking around. For steadily improving, under-the-radar players such as Freddy Olofsson and Luc Snuggerud, it’s about moving up the organizational depth chart. For the two elite college standouts at camp, it’s about seizing a golden opportunity to bypass the minors altogether.

Motte was part of the best line in the nation last year, posting 32 goals and 24 assists in only 38 games. He also has spent significant time at both wings, and calls himself a 200-foot player who’s willing to backcheck and block shots.

Schmaltz is more of a playmaker, with 11 goals and 35 assists in 37 games as a sophomore, and two goals and six assists in seven games at the World Juniors.

Both are high-end skill players who feel they’re NHL ready. The Hawks hope they are, too. After trading Teuvo Teravainen to Carolina, Hawks general manager Stan Bowman gave Schmaltz

the hard sell, convincing him to turn pro. Schmaltz said he’s not expecting to be Teravainen right away. But the 6-foot-1 Wisconsin native – who idolized Patrick Kane growing up – will get every opportunity at training camp in September to take Teravainen’s old job.

“Even before they traded Teravainen, they were going to need guys that were making less money because of the salary cap,” Schmaltz said. “They’re going to need guys on entry-level contracts to play. I’m just going to work for a job and do whatever it takes.”

The Hawks only have one line set in stone – the second grouping of Artemi Panarin, Artem Anisimov and Kane.

Toews’ left wing was a revolving door of players all season, and his longtime right wing, Marian Hossa, proved to be an ideal fit as a shutdown defender alongside Marcus Kruger on the third line. Meanwhile, players such as Hinostroza, Ryan Hartman and Tanner

Lurry named to Thorpe watch list

Northern Illinois All-American Shawun Lurry was named to his second preseason watch list this year when he was placed on the 2016 Jim Thorpe Award Watch List, the Jim Thorpe Association announced Monday.

Last week, Lurry was named to the Nagurski Award Watch List.

Lurry is one of 39 cornerbacks and one of five players from the Mid-American Conference named to the Thorpe Award Watch List.

The Jim Thorpe Award was established in 1986 and is named after one of history’s greatest all-around athletes. The Jim Thorpe Award is presented to the best defensive back in college football by the

Five-time NBA champion Duncan retires after 19 seasons

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Spurs star Tim Duncan is calling it a career.

Duncan announced his retirement Monday after 19 seasons, five championships, two MVP awards and 15 All-Star appearances. It marks the end of an era for the Spurs and the NBA. Duncan was the No. 1 overall pick out of Wake Forest in 1997 and teamed with Gregg Popovich, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili to make the Spurs the most enduring success story in modern American sports.

It might not be the likeliest scenario, but it’s entirely possible either Schmaltz or Motte finds himself on the top line right out of camp. That’s the carrot at the end of the stick – the motivating force to power through a practice immediately after a scrimmage one day after grueling conditioning tests at prospect camp.

Motte cautioned that “you kind of psyche yourself out if you try playing GM,” but it doesn’t take a cap expert to know the door is wide open for elite prospects this fall. It’s why prospect camp feels more urgent this year. It’s why training camp will be so competitive this year. And it’s why two of the nation’s top college players decided it was the right time to leave school and make a run at the NHL.

‘Crazy Eyes’ looks to make big jump in 2nd season

“Crazy Eyes.”

That’s what the former longtime Bull now turned New York Knick called Bobby Portis when the two hit it off in training camp last season.

Oh, and the eyes still are crazy.

There they were Sunday night in Game 2 of Summer League play, burning a hole through a referee who dared to call Portis’ apparent block a foul.

“Tough, at the same time it’s a business,” Portis said of Noah’s free-agency departure. “Sometimes that’s what happens. Me and Joakim Facetimed twice over the last two weeks, so it’s been cool to talk to him.

“Things change.”

Portis is hoping so.

As a rookie last season, the forward/ center definitely wasn’t shy. Whether

it was referring to himself in third person in interviews or launching shots from anywhere on the court, he wanted to make his presence felt.

In the 62 games he played in during the 2015-16 season, Portis averaged seven points and 5.4 rebounds a game, shooting 43 percent from the field and 31 percent from 3-point range.

And although coach Fred Hoiberg wants Portis to stay aggres- Bobby Portis sive, he also wants the excitable big to understand the difference between taking shots and taking good shots.

“The biggest thing with Bobby, you know we want Bobby shooting rhythm 3s,” Hoiberg said. “He works on it. That’s one of the biggest things he’s done this summer is work on his long-range shot.

So with Bobby, it’s not taking the long contested two, mid-clock shot.

“I thought [Saturday’s Summer League win] was good. I thought he even passed up a few that I wished he would have shot, specifically that corner 3 after he just hit one from the top.

But we’ve been working a lot with Bobby and his footwork, talking a lot about shot selection, and I think that will improve next [season].”

Although it’s only Summer League, there have been some signs.

In that Saturday win over Boston, Portis led the Bulls in scoring with 17 points, shooting 7 for 12 from the field and 1 for 3 from 3-point range.

Sunday’s win over Philadelphia, however? It was a “Crazy Eyes” throwback game.

Portis scored only eight points, while shooting 4 for 12 from the field, so he obviously is not there yet. “[Shot selection] was the biggest lesson for me last year,” Portis said.

“I’ve always been a guy that the ball goes to. For me to be the third, fourth

of fifth option, it’s been hard for me.

But at the same time, it’s something I have to learn.

“Last year, I kind of rushed on my shots. But as the year progressed, I learned. I watched film on some of my favorite players to see what they do. I’m trying to do the same thing that they do.”

He won’t have to watch film on at least one of his favorite players. He actually will get to see him up close and personal.

When the news broke that the Bulls signed veteran Dwyane Wade, Portis instantly was demoted to his mother’s second-favorite player on the team.

“That’s actually like my mom’s idol, her favorite player,” Portis said.

“That’s all she talked about when I was growing up as a kid, ‘D-Wade, D-Wade.’

My mom actually texted me when they said he was coming, and she was like going nuts. It was crazy.”

And if there’s one thing Portis knows, it’s crazy.

26 Going beyond Do Not Resuscitate Order Dear Dr. K: My husband has terminal cancer. He already has signed a do-not-resuscitate order. His doctor recently suggested he also complete a new form called a “POLST.” Can you explain what this is?

Dear Reader: As you know (but other readers might not), a Durable Do Not Resuscitate Order (DDNR) lets your husband’s medical team know he does not want CPR if his heart stops beating or he stops breathing. It’s usually for people who are near the end of their lives or have an illness that won’t improve. It takes the burden of decision-making off family members.

A POLST is a relatively new initiative that takes DDNRs even further. Like the DDNR, the POLST (Physician’s Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) form turns your husband’s health care preferences into a medical order that must be followed by doctors, hospital staffers and paramedics.

The POLST provides instructions for treatments beyond CPR. For example, it covers such issues as when he wants the doctors to prescribe pain medicine, antibiotics and nutrition. It’s for use both inside and outside of the hospital setting.

The POLST is not a legal document.

It’s a medical order signed by your husband, your physician and a witness.

For it to be most effective, it must be in the possession of someone close to your husband when he is seriously ill, and major medical decisions need to be made.

Most likely, that someone will be you or his doctor.

Many states are just developing their POLST forms. They might call them by another name, such as a MOLST (Medical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment), POST (Physician Orders for Scope of

One important issue to consider is this: POLSTs can dictate very specific treatment that’s based on a person’s needs when he or she signs the form. But there’s no process in place to revisit the POLST if and when a person’s physical status changes. Suppose your husband no longer agreed with the instructions in his POLST, but was not able to communicate with physicians. In that situation, the POLST could be a problem.

It might help to have other documents in place that spell out your husband’s wishes. Not just medical orders, but legal documents that also fall under the umbrella term of an advance directive.

These include: • A living will. This legal document formalizes your treatment preferences if you’re unable to make your own health care decisions. It is drafted by an attorney. A living will can spell out the same detailed instructions as a POLST. • A health care proxy or surrogate. This is a legal document that names a person who is empowered to make decisions for your husband if he lacks the capacity to make them. Speaking openly with your husband about the care he wants might be the most important thing you can do to be sure he receives the treatment he wishes.

The bidding is always easier when you can see all 52 cards. But after North rebid five spades over five diamonds, South thought the grand slam had to have play.

There seem to be 13 tricks: six spades, three hearts and four clubs.

The only danger is a bad club break.

If West has J-10-fourth, his holding can be nullified by finessing twice.

But what happens if East has J-10fourth of clubs?

Assuming East has the diamond ace (reasonable, given West’s lead), he can be squeezed between the minors as long as declarer does not play dummy’s diamond king at trick one.

South ruffs the diamond, draws trumps, and cashes his heart tricks.

What does he learn?

Here, he finds out that East started with three spades, at least three hearts and (from the bidding) six diamonds. So, he has at most one club.

Declarer cashes his club ace and plays a club to dummy’s nine (or captures West’s honor, ruffs the diamond king, and takes the club finesse).

Leave until as late as possible a suit that can be played in more than one way.
