Happy to have choices Watching the Kirkland parade with my family last weekend brought back memories of the time when I was young, wild and free, forgetting what the Fourth of July truly meant.

There were several kids, probably in their early 20s, clearly drinking alcoholic beverages. Not only was I watching the parade, but I was also gazing at these kids singing and dancing. They were squirting each other with water and just laughing.

They weren’t acting ridiculous, but just having enough fun to make me realize that I felt older, or dare I say, wiser?

I remember what the July 4 holiday used to mean. It was time to party. The day consisted of drinking wine coolers and grilling. We played a couple of drinking games and, of course, participated in truth or dare.

After cleaning up we would walk to the local park for fireworks. The Fourth of July was metaphorically and literally about spontaneous fireworks.

Being a wife and mother really puts a kibosh on anything spontaneous. I mean, just to go to the parade took preparation. My husband had to load the car with chairs and blankets.

The diaper bag was stocked. And we didn’t forget the sunscreen. We were ready for family shenanigans.

While listening to the band play, my mind started to wander. I was thinking about what the Fourth of July really meant now. As the candy was being thrown to the crowd, I was overwhelmed with how proud I was to be an American. This country is truly amazing.

Being a citizen means freedom to choose.

I am sure the cycle will continue. While Hannah Jo is growing up, she may choose to partake in Fourth of July shenanigans and spontaneous fireworks.

I will guarantee you, however, my daughter will understand the pursuit of happiness and remember that our freedom isn’t free.

Community lines the street for DeKalb high-schooler’s homecoming

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After a four-month stay at a Chicago children’s hospital, 17-year-old Ricky De La Cruz arrived home Thursday, greeted by a cheering crowd of his closest 100 friends.

It wasn’t just any crowd, either.

The DeKalb High School student’s grand arrival included a fire truck and police escorts, a live DJ, poster-sized signs and a banner with his face on it. Four months after receiving a new heart, Ricky emerged from his father’s van wearing a surgical mask he pulled down just moments later to reveal an ear-to-ear smile.

“I’m never going back to the hospital again,” he said, exasperated.

On Sunday, Ricky will celebrate his 18th birthday – an occasion that for any other teenager comes just once a year. But another day, April 19, will forever remain a second birthday of sorts – the day he received the heart transplant that saved his life. From now on, the family will celebrate both, , said his dad, Eradio De La Cruz.

“He was fighting for his life all his life. So it was a big thing for him to get a new heart,” Eradio De La Cruz said. “I joke and tell him, ‘Now that you have a new heart, are you going to take care of it?’ ” Ricky was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a condition that landed him in the hospital in April and gave doctors reason for concern.

But on April 18, his mother, Dori De La Cruz, received a phone call that made her own heart stop. Just as Ricky’s condition was taking a turn for the worst, the hospital found a matching donor.

Since then, Ricky has spent consecutive months in the hospital and had a brief stay at the Ronald McDonald House. Today, he is stable and strong enough to spend nights in his own bed, under the same roof as his three younger siblings – a symbol of normalcy he’d been looking forward to for a long time. What he didn’t expect, however, was the block party of friends and family dressed in red Run4Ricky T-shirts lining his street for a quarter-mile.

“Stay for dinner!” he shouted to everyone after taking a light, victory jog down the sidewalk.

at his homecoming after recovering from heart transplant surgery been sporting Run4Ricky T-shirts since his surgery. So far, shirt sales have raised $1,270 for the De La Cruz family and encouraged people throughout the city to take care of their own hearts and run regularly.

The Children’s Organ Transplant Association has continued to ask volunteers to help raise money to pay for a DeKalb teen’s medical expenses.

The organization had just less than $2,000 of its $40,000 goal raised, as of Thursday night.

Although Ricky is back at home with his family, the year is sure to bring more trips to the hospital, said his sister, 13-year-old Bella De La

Cruz.

“He still has to go to a lot of appointments in Chicago, but we still have a lot of fun stuff planned for when he’s allowed to go anywhere,” she said. “He’ll be home, so it will be nice and warming to just wake up and have him be there again.”

Meanwhile, Ricky’s younger brother, 9-year-old Sam De La Cruz, is looking forward to having another boy to pal around with.

“He’s really sweet and ... really he’s my only brother,” he said. “I love him.”

Ricky’s immediate plans don’t include anything more elaborate than

watching TV, he said. But the remainder of the summer has a lot in store, said his youngest sister, 10-year-old Nina De La Cruz.

“We’re probably going to be going to Chicago and going to museums, and water parks and amusement parks,” she said.

With tears in nearly everyone’s eyes, Dori De La Cruz struggled to come up with words to express her gratitude toward the community she said has shown her nothing but kindness and support.

“I love DeKalb, and we’ll be here forever,” she said. “Ricky brings a lot of people together.”

Regional board to hear residents’ request to join D-427

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Regional Office of Education could decide soon whether owners of 12 homes along Coltonville Road should be allowed to detach from DeKalb School District 428 and be annexed by Sycamore School District 427.

The District 427 boar d voted June 28 to support the homeowners’ petition, which was signed by the area’s residents, and filed April 29 with the DeKalb County Regional Office of Education. Board members Donald Clayberg, Julenne Davey, Eric Jones and Steve Nelson voted in favor of supporting the request via resolution, and board President Jim Dombek voted against it. Kristen Wrenn and Diane Tyrrell were absent.

Ultimately, the decision will be made by the Regional Office of Edu-

cation, Sycamore Superintendent Kathy Countryman said. If all goes as planned, the Regional Office of Education will host a public hearing, where representatives of both the Sycamore and DeKalb school districts would be welcome to present and elaborate on their stance.

The hearing likely will take place this month, and would determine the outcome of the petition, Countryman has said. No official hearing date has been set.

The property has an equalized assessed value of almost $515,000, about $450,000 of which is taxable, board documents show.

Granting the petition would not increase the percentage of minority, low-income, or English learners by more than 3 percent, according to the petition; and if the Sycamore Library District is created, the petitioners would be able to seek annexation to the

new library district.

District 428 board President Victoria Newport declined to comment on the matter because she said it was a “possible litigation issue.”

DeKalb Superintendent Doug Moeller could not be reached for comment.

The group of homes along Coltonville between First Street and the South Branch of the Kishwaukee River have Sycamore mailing addresses, but fall inside District 428’s boundaries.

No school-aged children currently live in the area, although one family has two children who are 2 years old and 7 months old.

The children’s mother, Audra Cronauer, wants to send her kids to Sycamore schools, since they have been made to feel like Sycamore residents already, she said.

“Last summer, I took my kids to Hopkins Park to swim. When I arrived, they asked for my identification, and

once they saw it said Sycamore, they told me I was from Sycamore and I was therefore a nonresident. I told them I am in DeKalb school district, and they said that did not matter,” she said.

It’s jarring to Cronauer that her family has a Sycamore address, uses the Sycamore parks and fire department, but would be required to send her children to DeKalb schools, she said.

“I firmly believe annexing will increase the likelihood of my children’s participation in school, sports, and religious activities,” Cronauer said.

“Having my children being able to attend school in Sycamore is their natural community, and enhances not only their educational opportunities but also encourages participation in social and other extracurricular activities that will enhance their life experiences and personal development and involvement within their community.”

Illinois Sheriff’s Association warns of telemarketing scam DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com The Illinois Sheriff’s Association is warning the public about a telemarketing campaign that is fraudulently using the organization’s name to bilk people out of money.

The Springfield-based sheriff’s association said in a news release that it never solicits donations by phone, but does conduct a statewide, direct-mail fundraising campaign.

The sheriff’s association urges residents who feel pressured by or doubt the sincerity of telephone solicitors to simply hang up on them.

Consumers also have the right to ask for the following information of telemarketers:

• Name, address and phone number of the organization for which they are soliciting.

• Name, address and phone number of the telemarketing firm.

• Percentage of every dollar donated paid to the telemarketing firm.

• A written commitment from the solicitor before making a donation.

If the person seeking a donation will not answer these questions, it’s time to hang up on them.

The sheriff’s association asks anyone who receives a call from a telephone solicitor seeking money for the sheriff’s association to simply hang up, or gather as much information as they can from the caller, then report it to the Illinois Sheriff’s Association, ISA@ilsheriff.org.

There are five steps to this stage, which started in 2015. The project is about halfway through the phase, so it is expected to last until about the end of 2017.

The next phase will be the contract plan preparation and land acquisition phase. This phase will last two years.

Then, the construction phase begins, which is another two to three years.

The entire project is not expected to be completed for about five more years.

“It seems like a long time,” Michels said. “But we are a lot closer than we have been in the past, and we are confident the project will go through.”

Route 47 is primarily a rural, northsouth state highway that runs 170 miles from central Illinois to Wisconsin, and I-88 takes travelers 140 miles from western Illinois to metropolitan Chicago.

The exact section being studied includes the village of Sugar Grove and unincorporated Blackberry and Sugar Grove townships. It includes Route 47 from Waubonsee Community College to Green Road. The study limits on I-88 extend approximately one-half mile east and west of Route 47.

The input and suggestions from the May meeting went to an external firm for review, and then the alternative development and evaluation process will go through multiple rounds of evaluations. The process will screen alternatives and those that best meet the purpose and needs of the project move to the next round.

Although a date was not initially set, attendees will be able to review the results of the screened alternatives at the next public meeting. The remaining alternatives will then be studied further and additional input again will be sought.

SUGAR GROVE – A study aimed at eventually creating a full-access interchange at Route 47 and Interstate 88 is progressing, with officials gearing up to pitch their plans to the Federal Highway Administration.

The village of Sugar Grove initiated the Sugar Grove Parkway (Route 47) at the Reagan Memorial Tollway (Interstate 88) Interchange Improvement Study to create a full-access tollway interchange at Route 47; the interchange now offers access points to and from the west only.

At an earlier meeting in May, about 100 people who attended were able to hear about the work completed to date, view route alternatives, and provide input and suggestions on interchange variations based on the purpose and needs of the project, said Peter Johnston, head engineer on the project from GREAF-Chicago, an engineering, planning and design firm.

“The input and suggestions from the first public meeting and the (commu-

nity advisory group) meetings we’ve had over the last year have all been incorporated into a range of alternative interchanges,” Johnston said.

There is much work to be done before any work can begin, however. A projected traffic study out to year 2040 will have to be completed, an environmental study finalized, and those elements will have to be combined to refine the interchange options in order to present a plan to the administration at its meeting in September.

“We hope to go to them in September with a presentation telling them why the interchange should be at Route 47, what kind of interchange should be here, and why other roads should not be selected over Route 47,” Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels said.

This stage is called the alternative development stage. At the meeting, attendees were able to make suggestions on highway tools such as entrance re-locations, raised medians, traffic signal controls and roundabout controls.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – A three-car crash at Peace and Barber Greene roads Thursday in DeKalb delayed traffic and left two vehicles seriously damaged, but caused no major injuries, police said.

According to a DeKalb County Sheriff’s news release, the crash occurred about 3:40 p.m. when a gray 2011 Hyundai Sonata collided with a maroon 2007 Subaru Impreza. Police said the driver of the Sonata, David C. Couch, of the 800 block of Amherst Drive in Sycamore, was turning left onto Peace from Barber Greene when his vehicle collided with the Subaru, which was driven by Paige N. Russell of the 400 block of North First Street in DeKalb.

vehicles with extensive front-end damage, and spun the Subaru into a Ford F-150 pickup that was stopped on Peace, waiting to turn east onto Barber Greene.

All of the people in the vehicles involved in the crash were wearing seat belts, and no one was seriously injured.

The intersection was closed for a short time after the crash, and police were on the scene directing traffic.

The sheriff’s office news release did not list two Waste Management garbage trucks that were stopped near the crash scene as being involved in the crash.

DeKalb police and firefighters also responded to the crash scene.

Both the Hyundai and the Subaru were towed from the scene. Couch was cited for failure to yield when turning left in connection with the crash.

CHICAGO – A state labor board dealt a blow to Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner on Thursday, denying his administration’s unusual request to circumvent a legal recommendation and expedite deciding whether negotiations with the state’s largest public employees union have stalled.

The unanimous vote by the Illinois Labor Relations Board, whose members are appointed by the governor, left the high-stakes case in the hands of an administrative law judge who’s already held hearings and will issue a recommendation to the board.

Since contract talks with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 broke off in January, the central question has been determining whether both sides are at an “impasse.” The designation intensifies tactics both sides can use.

CHICAGO – U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth’s campaign said she raised a record $2.7 million in the most recent quarter for her closely watched bid to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk.

The Illinois Democrat enters the contest’s final months with $5.5 million cash on hand.

Kirk’s campaign hasn’t released his fundraising totals for the three-month period that ended June 30.

Democrats see Illinois as one of the party’s best opportunities to pick up a seat and potentially retake the Senate in November.

Duckworth has raised more money than Kirk in each quarter so far this campaign cycle. She has eliminated his early lead in the amount of cash on hand, finishing the first quarter of 2016 with a $700,000 advantage.

Officer’s lawyers seek shooting victim’s records

CHICAGO – Lawyers for a white Chicago police officer charged with first-degree murder in the 2014 shooting death of a black 17-year-old are seeking access to the teen’s juvenile records.

The lawyers for Officer Jason Van Dyke said in a written request only that their inspection of Laquan McDonald’s juvenile records was necessary as they prepared to defend Van Dyke, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday. The request was filed last month.

The attorneys declined further comment to the newspaper. They said the judge presiding over the officer’s criminal case imposed a gag order preventing them from discussing the case publicly.

The judge who presides over the juvenile court’s child protection division will rule on the request.

National Association of Counsel for Children executive director Kendall Marlowe told the Tribune that the request appears to be an attempt to shift blame for the shooting onto the teen.

Chicago still paying for failed 2016 Olympics bid

CHICAGO – Although Chicago lost its bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics to Rio de Janeiro, it is still paying for the effort.

When Mayor Richard M. Daley launched the bid in 2008, he promised only private funds would be used. There was one exception – the site for the Olympic village, for which the city paid $91 million.

The city hasn’t been able to sell it, and will be paying for the property until 2024.

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis has named Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich to be a member of the powerful Vatican office that vets bishops’ nominations, signaling he wants a key pastoral voice involved in the selection of U.S. church leaders.

Francis in 2014 had hand-picked Cupich to lead the Chicago archdiocese in his first major appointment for the U.S. church.

Cupich is a moderate like Francis and replaced the late Cardinal Francis George, who had been an aggressive defender of orthodoxy.

Cupich now will be a member of the same Vatican advisory board where a staunch American conservative, Cardinal Raymond Burke, sat for years until Francis removed him.

In another sign of Francis’ esteem for Cupich, he tapped him as a special appointee to attend his recent synod on the family.

Francis has said he wants to reform the way the church selects its bishops, who wield enormous power in running church affairs and interpreting church doctrine at the local level.

– A woman who watched as a police officer fatally shot her boyfriend during a traffic stop streamed the gruesome aftermath of the slaying live on Facebook, telling a worldwide audience that her companion had been shot “for no apparent reason” while reaching for his wallet.

Within hours, the Minnesota governor was pressing for the Justice Department to open its second investigation of the week into the death of a black man at the hands of police.

“Nobody should be shot and killed in Minnesota for a tail light being out of function,” Democrat Mark Dayton said. “Would this have happened if those passengers would have been white? I don’t think it would have.”

It was the second fatal police shooting in as many days. A black 37-year-old man was killed Tuesday by officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Alton Sterling’s death was caught on video.

The latest death happened late Wednesday in the St. Paul suburb of Falcon Heights, a mostly white community of 5,000 people that also is home to Minnesota’s annual state fair and part of the massive University of Minnesota campus.

In the video, Diamond Reynolds describes being pulled over for a “busted tail light” and said her boyfriend had told the officer he was carrying a gun for which he was licensed.

As word of the shooting spread, relatives of the man joined scores of people who gathered at the scene and outside the hospital where he died. They identified him as Philando Castile of St. Paul, a well-liked 32-year-old cafeteria supervisor at a Montessori school.

Reynolds said Thursday that he was killed even though he complied with the officer’s instructions. She told reporters that Castile did “nothing but what the police officer asked of us, which was to put your hands in the air and get your license and registration.”

The Department of Justice announced that it would monitor the investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

The governor said he and other state officials would seek more direct involvement.

Speaking to CNN, Castile’s mother said that she suspected she would never learn the whole truth about her son’s death.

“I think he was just black in the wrong place,” Valerie Castile said Thursday, adding that she had stressed to her children that they must do what authorities tell them to do to survive.

“I always told them, whatever you do when you get stopped by police, comply, comply, comply.”

Police did not release any details about the officer except to say he had been placed on paid administrative leave.

Reynolds described him as Asian.

In his first public reaction

to the shootings, President Barack Obama said it is clear the slayings were not isolated incidents.

The deaths are “symptomatic of the broader challenges within our criminal justice system, the racial disparities that appear across the system year after year, and the resulting lack of trust that exists between law enforcement and too many of the communities they serve,” Obama wrote in a Facebook post.

On Wednesday, the Justice Department launched a civil rights investigation into Sterling’s shooting, which took place after he scuffled with two white police officers outside a convenience store.

In Minnesota, relatives were outraged that Castile was not tended to after he was shot. Reynolds said it took about 15 minutes for paramedics to arrive.

William Moulder, a police consultant and longtime former police chief in Des Moines, Iowa, said all officers carry first-aid supplies in their cars and are instructed to start rendering aid as soon as it’s clear there’s no threat.

The Facebook footage shows Castile lying motionless in the car for several minutes, his shirt covered in blood, while Reynolds speaks calmly to the camera.

WASHINGTON – Under an onslaught of Republican criticism, FBI Director James Comey vigorously defended the government’s decision not to prosecute Hillary Clinton over her private email setup, rejecting angry accusations that the Democratic presidential candidate was given special treatment.

To criminally charge Clinton based on the facts his agency’s yearlong probe had found would have been unwarranted and mere “celebrity hunting,” Comey told a congressional investigative committee Thursday.

Republicans on the panel, voices sometimes raised in apparent frustration and irritation, said they were mystified by the decision not to prosecute because they felt that Comey, in a remarkably detailed and critical public statement Tuesday, had laid out a sufficient basis for charges.

“I totally get people’s questions,” he said, but the FBI was obliged to follow the law.

Comey said investigators found no evidence that Clinton or her aides intended to break the law, even though they mishandled classified information. A misdemeanor statute requires the mishandling to be intentional, Comey said. A law that permits felony prosecution because of gross negligence has been used only once in the 99 years since it was enacted – and that was in a case involving es-

pionage.

“We don’t want to put people in jail unless we prove that they knew they were doing something they shouldn’t do,” Comey said. “That is the characteristic of all the prosecutions involving mishandling of classified information.”

Later Thursday, State Department spokesman John Kirby said the department was reopening its internal investigation of possible mishandling of classified information by Clinton and top aides. The internal review was suspended in April to avoid interfering with the FBI inquiry, Kirby said. Earlier this week he said former officials could face loss of security clearances or other administrative sanctions.

Comey’s appearance before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee marked his first public statements since his announcement that removed the threat of criminal charges against Clinton but also revived public scrutiny of

her email behavior as secretary of state in President Barack Obama’s first term.

Committee chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, told Comey that the FBI’s decision showed a “double standard” for powerful people. Had the “average Joe” done what she had done, he said, that person would go to prison.

“If your name isn’t Clinton, or you’re not part of the powerful elite, then Lady Justice will act differently,” Chaffetz said, adding that the FBI had set a “dangerous precedent” in letting her off the hook.

Chaffetz said lawmakers would now ask the FBI to investigate whether Clinton lied to the committee.

One by one, Comey rebutted a litany of GOP charges including that the FBI had been biased, ignored the law, applied it unjustly or coordinated the decision with Clinton’s campaign. “We try very hard to apply the same standard whether you are rich or poor, white or black, old or young, famous or not known at all,” he said.

DALLAS – At least two snipers opened fire on police officers during protests Thursday night in Dallas, killing four officers and injuring seven others, police said.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown told reporters the snipers fired “ambush style” upon the officers. He said police had a suspect cornered and were negotiating with him. Brown said 11 officers were shot, three of them fatally. Police later tweeted that a fourth officer had died.

The gunfire broke out about 8:45 p.m. Thursday while hundreds of people were gathered to protest fatal police shootings this week in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and suburban St. Paul, Minnesota.

The protesters had gathered after a Minnesota officer Wednesday fatally shot Philando Castile while he was in a car with a woman and a child in a St. Paul suburb. The aftermath of the shooting was purportedly livestreamed in a widely shared Facebook video.

Illinois fails moral test During the past fiscal year, Illinoisans were at the mercy of a state budget impasse that disrupted institutions, programs and lives.

For the past decade, however, the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have been chronically neglected by those in power.

The consequences of that neglect make it more and more difficult for area agencies to serve the needs of people who, as the late Sen. Hubert Humphrey once said, are in “the shadows of life.”

Programs that help Illinois’ most at-risk individuals are being cut because of little or no funding. Entire agencies have closed.

The underfunding has led to wages for agency employees that aren’t competitive enough to attract sufficient workers willing to undergo the required training and do the required work, which includes personal care (toileting) for clients.

The state has a “waiting list” of about 27,000 people with disabilities who need help.

The stopgap budget approved last week might help some, but it means the uncertainty about future funding continues. Uncertainty causes stress and leads to employees seeking more stable jobs.

The average spending for disability services in Midwestern states is $133 per capita. Illinois, however, spends only $44 per capita, according to Brion Brooks, executive director of the Village of Progress, an organization that provides services for adults with disabilities in Oregon.

How do state leaders get away with spending so little on people with disabilities?

Many people with disabilities are not able to have a voice in the debate.

They are out of sight, and therefore out of mind for many politicians – even as, with more programs closing and more people with disabilities on the street, they likely will have more problems with law enforcement.

Humphrey said the “moral test of government” centers on how it treats children, the elderly, and “the sick, the needy and the handicapped.”

In Illinois, our government clearly is failing the test.

And it will continue to do so until the public demands otherwise.

Shame for those blaming FBI director If Republicans believe the FBI director is corrupt and political, they should have the gumption to say so.

Instead, many have insulted James Comey with slimy implications and underhanded threats since Tuesday, when he announced that he would not recommend charges against Hillary Clinton relating to her use of a private email server while secretary of state.

Republican leaders had practically promised supporters that Clinton would be indicted. Instead, Comey denounced Clinton’s judgment but explained that the facts of the case did not conform to the fevered partisan fantasies that have developed around them – did not, in other words, merit prosecution. So GOP leaders decided to attack the fact-finder.

That Donald Trump would claim that “our system is absolutely, totally

rigged” and that Clinton bribed Attorney General Loretta Lynch was no surprise. The wild, unfounded accusations were on his usual level of accuracy and responsibility. More disheartening were the responses from GOP politicians who should know better than to impugn the professionalism of the FBI director and his agents, particularly after Comey’s measured, fact-based presentation.

“This announcement defies explanation. No one should be above the law,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, pronounced, suggesting that Comey had failed in his responsibility. In fact, Comey offered plenty of explanation, starting with the facts that investigators found no intentional wrongdoing and only a tiny number of emails on Ms. Clinton’s personal account containing information marked

classified at the time. In reality, Comey pointed out, “no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.”

Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-New Hampshire, claimed that Clinton “gets to play by a different set of rules than everyone else” before accusing the FBI of “failing to enforce the law.” In fact, as Comey reported, the FBI could find no case in which anyone has been charged under these circumstances.

If the government were to charge her, prosecutors would in effect hold Clinton to different rules than everyone else.

Sen. Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, issued a veiled threat to Comey: “If it wants to avoid giving the impression that the FBI was pulling punches,” he said, “the agency must now be more transparent than ever in releasing information gathered during its inves-

tigation,” presumably so that he and other Republicans can transfigure new details into fresh “proof” of criminality.

Not to be outdone, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, hauled Comey before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee for a grilling.

Several other Republicans, meanwhile, called for a new investigation and an independent counsel. As with Benghazi, their motto seems to be: Keep investigating until we get the outcome we want.

“It appears damage is being done to the rule of law,” Ryan said. He’s right, but the FBI director isn’t doing the damage.

The wreckers are those who cast baseless aspersions on U.S. law enforcement in the service of their partisan goals.

The last time I saw my friend Chris Stevens was at the Benghazi Airport as his body was being transferred to the plane to begin his last journey back to the United States.

The great, honorable, gentle man I welcomed to Benghazi only two days earlier now lay lifeless before me on the same tarmac.

Chris had arrived in Benghazi on Sept. 10, 2012, for five days of meetings and to inaugurate an American cultural center at an English-language school under my care. A Libyan by birth and lifelong resident of Benghazi, I had for years taught English and facilitated cultural exchanges with the U.S. and, upon the resumption of diplomatic relations, served as an adviser and cultural interpreter for U.S. officials – especially Chris. I also was the one charged with coordinating his fateful visit to Benghazi.

I learned that I had been targeted that night and it was no longer safe for me to remain in Libya. I arrived

in the U.S. two months later. Upon my arrival I was dismayed to find that the public conversation here had veered from memorializing a slain hero to hijacking his legacy for naked political agendas. Yet I maintained faith that, over time, the country would settle its discord, heal its wounds and return to honoring Chris Stevens, his life’s work and the noble mission for which he died.

We all know this has not happened, but not everyone will understand why.

Yet I have had a front-row seat.

For months, I have been approached by people seeking to persuade me to publicly endorse their false version of events that night, namely that Chris was taking part in secret weapons smuggling and that the secretary of state was responsible for letting him die.

But they do not need to pay me, threaten me, or persuade me to tell my story. I have already told the full truth, first to U.S. law enforcement, then to the State Department’s Accountability Review Board and again to the House Select Commit-

The United Neighborhood Center and the Waterman Lions Club invite community members to Summerfest 2016 at Waterman Lions Park, 420 S. Birch St. in Waterman.

There will be activities for all ages throughout the day starting with a breakfast from 6 to 9:30 a.m. A tractor pull, train rides, hay rides, petting zoo, arts and craft show and flea market will all begin at 10 a.m. The Lions food concession stand opens at 10:30 a.m. A magic show will be at 11 a.m. along with a cowboy quick-draw. The Tractor & Truck Parade of Power will be at noon.

The Kishwaukee College Foundation has announced the recipients of the annual Departmental Awards.

The awards will be used during the college’s 2016-2017 academic year.

The Kishwaukee College Foundation encourages innovation and creativity among faculty and staff through its Departmental Awards program.

Proposals that enhance student academic and/or cultural experiences or those that increase and enhance the relationship between the college and the community are considered for funding on an annual basis. The proposals are submitted each spring semester for consideration. This year’s six recipients will be sharing more than $20,000 in funding. The six recipients are: • “Revision Learning Skills Center for Academic Success,” submitted by Dr. M. Joanne Kantner, dean of Adult Education and Transition Programs.

The Learning Skills Center offers free tutoring services to KC students. With the Departmental Award funding, the tutoring services coordinator will receive professional development and training to create and develop interventions and innovative programming for the academic support of students in online courses, accelerated sequences, career/technical, adult/basic skills, and workforce short-term training sessions.

• Kishwaukee College 50th Anniversary Video, submitted by Mark Schwendau, computer-assisted design instructor. The college has undergone six “phases” of building and expansion since it first opened its doors in 1968.

Using CAD technology, six 3-D CAD models will be created to reflect the growth of the college from 1968-2018 that will be the focal point of a video celebrating 50 years of growth.

The college will host a juried art show for local high school students in the Kishwaukee College Art Gallery with an open house for students to visit

This will be a workshop for high school students to learn how to write and perform their own monologues. The students will perform their monologues in an integrated schedule with college students who have undergone a similar workshop under the direction of Nadine Franklin.

• Professional Development: National Association of Developmental Education, submitted by the Mathematics Department. This award will fund two full-time mathematics instructors to attend the National Association of Developmental Education Conference, March 1-4, 2017, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The two faculty members who will attend will experience new pedagogies as well as networking opportunities with other developmental education faculty from across the nation that will inspire new approaches and ideas that can help improve the success and retention of Kishwaukee College students.

• Instructor Station for the Programmable Logic Controllers, submitted

by Charles Raimondi, electronics instructor. The Electronics Department is updating the PLC to align with local industry requirements as well as advisory board recommendations.

The department will build a dedicated station for the instructor who can then demonstrate to students how to write various programs, set up the PLC, debug a PLC program, use various software commands to control and debug a PLC program, and wire a PLC station professionally.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SHABONNA – It took 94 years, but the Ladies’ Lincoln Highway Tournament is coming to Indian Oaks.

The Shabbona golf course will host the event, which tees off at 8:30 a.m. today, with the final round starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The club joined the tournament for the first time three years ago, and took fifth last year at Timber Creek Golf Course in Dixon. Kishwaukee Country Club won the tournament for the sixth straight year.

The tournament is a bogey competition, with the golfer recording a plus if

she finished with a birdie or better and a minus if she scores worse than par, both after handicaps are figured in.

The Indian Oaks men joined the men’s version of the tournament four years ago and hosted two years ago.

They’re gearing up for the men’s tournament July 16 and 17 at Timber Creek.

Beth Haag, who with Johnson served on IOCC’s Lincoln Highway Tournament committee, said the tournament has a lot of history.

“It’s so much fun for women to have this competition,” Haag said. “We don’t get as much competition as the men do.

The men get so much, and it’s not anybody’s fault. It just happens that way.

It’s just so nice to see so much friendly competition.”

Haag and Johnson said the tournament this year will play up that history, including having copies of the letter former President Ronald Reagan wrote years ago, reminiscing about his time as a caddy in the first iteration of the women’s tournament.

With improvements each of the first two years, Haag said she thinks the team can better its fifth-place finish last year.

“It’s our course,” Haag said, “so we expect to compete a little better this year.”

Rondo says don’t judge him just yet

Dwyane Wade decided Wednesday he will leave the Heat after 13 seasons. He agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Bulls and will earn about $47 million, instantly making him the highest-paid player on his new team, a distinction he never had in Miami.

Wade’s arrival in Chicago happens about 6 years late

It’s a nice story, the local guy finally coming home, but it comes with a healthy helping of wistfulness: Why, oh why, couldn’t this have happened six years ago?

The cosmic answer is that things happen for a reason, the reason being these are the Bulls.

Dwyane Wade, born on Chicago’s South Side, is a Bull now. It feels good and right and a lot late. The team gets a future Hall of Famer who turns 35 in January. They don’t get a veteran free agent at the height of his career. I know: What a surprise.

Wade found his second wind last season for the Heat. The freshest memory for the teams that pursued him is how well he performed in the playoffs, when he averaged 21.4 points and led the Heat to Game 7 of an Eastern Conference semifinal. I can’t forget the Wade of the previous five seasons, the one who always seemed to be hobbling on two rickety legs. That Wade never seems far away. That Wade always seems to need games off. Local guy with problematic knees. Hmm. Sounds vaguely familiar.

The second-year Bulls coach won’t be able to avoid that.

But it was nice for Rajon Rondo to insist it won’t be because of him.

Meeting with the media Thursday for the first time since signing a twoyear, $28 million deal with a mutual option in Year 2, Rondo talked about his volatile history with coaches, referees, teammates and even soon-to-be new teammate Dwyane Wade, and did his best to ease the minds of Rajon Rondo critics who felt he was a powder keg waiting for a spark.

“A lot is perception,” Rondo said of his reputation. “Not to knock or anything, you make the bed, you lay in it.

As you get to know me and you’ll get to know me a little bit more and Coach Hoiberg will get to know me, we’ll see from there. I think I have a clean slate here, and these guys are looking forward, and I’m just as thrilled to be here.

“You can consider me stubborn, but I think I’m really intelligent. I don’t BS around. I put a lot of work in, I watch film, I study. People may knock it, but I think it’s what makes me great. I talk to a lot of older players and players I have respect for, and they don’t consider it a knock. I talk to older coaches, as well. These guys will get to know me.

Like I said, people have always doubted me, and this is Day 1. We’ll see.”

What can’t be doubted is Rondo’s fire.

And that’s just why he might be the perfect fit for a Bulls squad that was marshmallow soft far too often last season.

Whether it was the behind-thescenes battle of egos going on between Jimmy Butler and Joakim Noah/Derrick Rose, or the fact that players were mistaking Hoiberg’s kindness as weakness, the result was a trip to the draft lottery and a front office that wanted an identity change.

Trading Rose, as well as letting Noah and Pau Gasol walk in free agency was step one, while inking Rondo one season after he led the NBA in assists was step two.

Third baseman Todd Frazier, who won the 2015 Home Run Derby during All-Star Week as a Cincinnati Red in 2015, will be the fifth White Sox and first since Jermaine Dye in 2006 to participate when he tries to defend his title in the 2016 event Monday at Petco Park in San Diego.

The field of eight, announced Thursday, includes Frazier, 2011 winner Robinson Cano, major league home run leader Mark Trumbo of the Baltimore Orioles, Corey Seager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins, Adam Duvall of the Reds, Wil Myers of the San Diego Padros and Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies.

Seeds are based on home run totals through Wednesday, and Frazier, who has 23, is seeded second and will face Gonzalez in the first round. Frazier is competing in the event for the third consecutive year after advancing to the finals in 2014 and winning last year.

CHICAGO – Cubs center fielder Dexter Fowler, whose strained hamstring might be the Cubs’ most costly injury so far this season, started a brief minor league rehab assignment Thursday with Single-A South Bend.

The Cubs have ruled out a return from the disabled list during this weekend’s series against the Pirates in Pittsburgh. But they say they have not ruled out activating him in time for him to start in the All-Star game Tuesday in San Diego if the medical staff

“We’ll see,” said Fowler, who acknowledged he doesn’t expect to be 100 percent “for a while” even after returning. “I’m getting pretty close. I’m definitely getting better. Could use that as an extra rehab game.”

The Cubs open the second half July 15 at home against Texas.

“Our primary objective is to make sure that he’s well, and ready to play for the rest of the season and take us to the promised land,” Maddon said. “But the opportunity to play in an All-Star game for a guy like him is pretty grand.

So you don’t want to get in the way of that if in fact he can.”

Cooper plays role of psychologist Helps veteran Shields, prospect Fulmer fix problems

One is an 11-year veteran, the other a top minor league prospect.

Both might figure into affecting the White Sox’s postseason chances during the second half.

James Shields, 34, and Carson Fulmer, 22, ran into similar problems, Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said. Both appeared to be adversely stirred by high expectations, Cooper believes, and have corrected their probDon Cooper lems.

“James Shields, when he came here, had a bad outing in San Diego,” Cooper said. “[Padres owner Ron Fowler] hammers him. He comes to a new team, wanting to impress, wanting to do a lot. Wanting to be good. And there was some anxiety built up and anxiousness to do that. And I think then he became a guy who was doing too much, working too fast, and everything was racing, and strikes were compromised.”

Shields’ failure was epic. Three more horrendous starts followed that 10-run nightmare in San Diego, prompting questions about everyone from Sox scouts to general manager Rick Hahn, who committed $27 million through 2018 to Shields by trading for him June 4. But three good starts later,

They gave Wade a two-year, $47.5 million contract. That’s a lot of money, but there’s a lot of funny money going around the NBA these days. Now it’s up to the 12-time All-Star with the three championship rings. Can he be anywhere close to what he used to be? Was last season an indication he has more left, or was it an anomaly? Whatever happens, the Bulls made you look. If that was the goal – and it might have been – they already have won.

Cooper said he slowed Fulmer’s delivery in spring training, and he slowed Shields, too, between and during pitches.

“When the cockpit’s out of whack, the plane is going to crash,” Cooper said. “When the mind races, the body is going to race.

“Think about it. You’re struggling and you have 100 different thoughts going through your head. And on top of it, everybody is hooting on [Shields] in the first inning of his first game. Our fans, hooting on him.”

To Cooper, Shields had a telling moment during a recent side session where he said “[Screw] it,” as if to clear all of the mental toxins from his system and start anew.

“For him to start fighting his way out of that shows a lot about who he is,” Cooper said. “That guy was still in there. And I knew we were going to get him out, but I wasn’t sure how quick it would happen. You always hope the sooner the better. He’s in there somewhere, but the mental guy was choking the physical guy.”

Shields, who starts Sunday against the Braves in the final game before the All-Star break for the Sox, who need to keep building on their streak of five straight series wins, never looked terribly shaken through that slump.

“I’ve been in similar ruts – not that bad of one – in my career,” he said.

“But you just kind of move forward.”

When pitchers are “rushing, things can fall apart, and that’s what was happening,” Cooper said. “And with Carson, we know he’s good, but he was trying to overdo it and trying to do more. And more ain’t better. Do what you do.”

The mistake would be to think there’s a long-term sentimental value to having Wade on the roster. He left the Chicago area after Richards High School to play for Marquette, then went to South Beach to play for the Heat. He has done community work in Chicago throughout his pro career.

Bulls fans of a certain type are feeling warm and fuzzy right now. Nice guy returns to where it all started for him.

Very cool.

The hometown-kid-makes-good angle will go away the first time he starts limping or takes a game off to give his body a rest. Seems like we’ve read that story before.

Fibroid treatment options vary Dear Dr. K: I have fibroids that cause heavy menstrual bleeding and painful cramping.

What are my treatment options?

Dear Reader: As I’ll explain shortly, the first question you need to ask yourself is whether you want to have children in the future. That’s because some of the most effective treatments for fibroids make becoming pregnant more difficult or impossible.

But first, let me explain what fibroids are. They are tumors that form in or on the uterus. They usually are benign – they don’t spread. They usually do not cause symptoms, but in some women they can cause heavy menstrual bleeding and painful cramps.

They also can increase the risk of miscarriage.

If you want to be able to bear children, you have several options available.

• Medical treatment. Birth control options that contain both estrogen and a progestin can help reduce extremely heavy bleeding.

They also help regulate menstrual periods.

Progestin-only therapies also can help reduce bleeding.

• Myomectomy. This surgical procedure removes fibroids while leaving the uterus in place. It often is used in women who still want to have children. Fibroids may be surgically removed through a variety of techniques. The best approach depends on the fibroids’ location. (I’ve put an illustration of different places fibroids might be located, in or on the uterus, on my website, www. askdoctork.com.)

A myomectomy sometimes can be performed with a laparoscope, which requires only a small incision. In recent years, some doctors performing a laparoscopic procedure used a technique called “morcellation.”

Instead of removing the fibroids in chunks, the technique minced them into small pieces, which then were removed. However, in

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff 2014 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported morcellation might increase the risk of spreading a rare, cancerous fibroid.

The FDA recommended this procedure no longer be used in most women with fibroids.

If you do not want to be able to bear children, then you have other options: • Uterine artery embolization. During this minor procedure, small particles are injected into an artery that supplies the uterus. This blocks off the blood supply to the fibroids, which shrinks them and reduces the bleeding they cause. This treatment reduces the likelihood you will be able to bear children in the future, although you still may be able to do so.

• Endometrial ablation. This is a minor procedure that scars the lining of the uterus.

Since the lining is the source of much of the bleeding, the procedure decreases uterine bleeding. This usually is advised only for women who have completed childbearing, as pregnancy is less likely after an ablation.

Also, if you do get pregnant, complications during the pregnancy are more likely.

• Hysterectomy. This surgery removes the uterus along with the attached fibroids. It provides a permanent solution for fibroids in women who do not want children, or already have finished having them.

On a recent trip out of state, my husband became ill. The hotel we stayed in referred us to a nearby urgent care walk-in clinic.

The nurse took his blood pressure, which was very high. The “doctor” never took his temperature or mentioned the high blood pressure to us. He prescribed six drugs, and we went on our way. My husband was happy; I was not.

When we returned home, I looked up the doctor’s name on the internet. Actually, he was a physician assistant, not a medical doctor. Abby, what should people do if they become sick while traveling? – Traveling Medical Emergency Dear T.M.E.: It is always wise when you travel to bring along a list of any medications you’re taking and a copy of your medical records.

Medical records are online these days and can be emailed to you upon request. A lot of health insurance companies offer a 24-hour service to call for a referral to a physician in whatever locale you happen to be.

Physician assistants are standard in many areas of the country as long as they are supervised by a physician – and in your husband’s case, there should have been an M.D. on the premises. You, as the consumer, have a right to ask questions. It would not have been out of line to inquire about the certification of the person who was treating your husband, or to ask to see the supervising M.D. If the medical emergency is dire, take no chances and call 911. If someone is really sick (having chest pains, muscle weakness, trouble speaking), an emergency room is better than an urgent care because more expertise and testing are available onsite.

Dear Abby: We are a married male couple.

It is always awkward to use the word “husband” when I’m referring to or asked about my spouse, because heterosexuals seem to think if I have a “husband,” then that makes me a “wife.”

I have started using “husband” and not “partner” because we are legally married and have been together for 18 years. Lesbians seem to have no trouble using “wife” when referring to each other. Why then does there seem to be a problem with male couples using “husband and husband” without it seeming awkward for heterosexuals? Is there another term that’s better than “husband”? – Perplexed In Phoenix Dear Perplexed: You could use the word “spouse,” but using the word “husband” is preferable. (“Partner” may be appropriate, but in my opinion, it does not accurately describe your status as a married person.) People might be jolted to hear married male couples refer to each other as husband because same-sex marriage is still new in many areas of the country.

I think you should use the word “husband” and be confident in doing so. The more you do, the greater the opportunity for the larger population to become accustomed to hearing it used.
