Rep. Hultgren pays tribute to Joe Bussone POLL On Wednesday, Congressman Randy Hultgren, a Republican from Illinois’ 14th District, gave a one-minute speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives in honor of Joe Bussone.

Here is the text of Hultgren’s speech, which will be entered into the Congressional Record: “I rise today to celebrate the life of longtime Sycamore resident Joe Bussone, who passed away on June 14 at age 89.

“Bussone joined the Navy after high school and served on three different landing ship tanks in the Pacific during World War II. He was proud of his country and believed it was an honor to serve its people.

“Following the war, Joe went to Bradley University in Peoria and then joined General Electric as a product engineer.

“In DeKalb, Bussone ran his own business and was known for promoting the efforts of local nonprofits, including Family Service Agency, local Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and others.

Pistorius sentenced to 6 years in prison for murder

PRETORIA, South Africa – Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee Olympian described by a judge as a “fallen hero,” was sentenced Wednesday to six years in a South African prison for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, a ruling viewed by some as too lenient.

However, Judge Thokozile Masipa appeared to anticipate criticism of a jail term that fell far short of the normally mandated 15 years for murder under South African law, declaring: “Our courts are courts of law, not courts of public opinion.”

Pistorius, who shot Steenkamp through the door of a toilet cubicle in his home in 2013, was asked to stand and face Masipa as she an-

nounced his sentence in a wood-paneled courtroom in the South African capital, Pretoria.

He was calm after the ruling, embracing his aunt and tearful sister before being led down a courtroom staircase to a holding cell ahead of being taken to prison.

Later, a convoy of police cars with lights flashing and sirens wailing left a side entrance of the courthouse. In the convoy was a van with tinted windows, possibly carrying Pistorius.

The sentencing was the latest act of a threeand-a-half year legal drama that has often played out on live television and shown the fall from grace of a runner once viewed as an inspiration to many for overcoming his disability. Both of Pistorius’ legs were amputated below the knees when he was 11 months old because of a congenital defect.

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A 3-year-old girl was flown Wednesday to Central DuPage Hospital with serious injuries after a crash left her trapped in a car partially submerged in 3 feet of water, police said.

Alaya Ochoa was in her car seat in the back seat of a 2013 Hyundai sedan that drove off the side of a bridge and landed upside down in a creek Wednesday afternoon, triggering a frantic effort to free her, police said.

A witness called 911 at 12:26 p.m.

Wednesday to report that a vehicle had gone off the road and was underwater near 25086 N. First St., west of Sycamore.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters from the Sycamore and DeKalb fire departments responded to the scene and arrived to find the vehicle on its roof and underwater, according to a news release.

First responders went into the water and lifted the vehicle up in order to

free the girl, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said.

The Hyundai was headed north on First Street south of Route 64 when it left the road, went over the guardrail

and landed in the water.

There were no other vehicles involved, Sullivan said.

Police believe the crash was an accident, Sullivan said. The incident remains under investigation by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. No one has been cited in connection with the crash.

Ochoa and her mother initially were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital.

Ochoa later was taken to Central DuPage Hospital, Sullivan said. At the time, police reported the 3-year-old was in serious condition.

Kishwaukee Hospital spokeswoman Theresa Komitas declined to comment on Ochoa’s condition because she is a child. Johnson since has been released from the hospital, Komitas said.

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Val Harris was walking her poodle Tuesday evening when she smelled what she knew was a house fire.

When she reached the house at 1420 N. 14th St. where she and her husband, Jim, have lived for 40 years, she saw smoke coming out of the eaves and realized it was her home that was burning.

“I went tearing in, and I said ‘Jim the house is on fire!’ ” Harris said. “He said ‘Where?’ and I said, ‘Kevon’s room.’ ” Kevon Lyle, the couple’s 27-yearold grandson, had fallen asleep with a lit cigarette, Val Harris said Wednesday. As smoke and fire filled the bedroom, he’d tried to get out but had lost consciousness with his body splayed in front of the bedroom door, making it impossible for family members to reach him, she said.

Lyle was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital by ambulance and later transferred to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. Val Harris said he’s on life support because of the smoke he inhaled in the fire, and likely will need a feeding tube. But the family is confident he will recover.

“We believe he’s going to be fine,” she said. “They said he should have been burned and yet they said there were no burns. … I said, ‘I’ll tell you

why, his angels got singed wings.’ ” As a neighbor tried to spray a garden hose into Kevon’s second-story bedroom, firefighters raced to the home abound 8:15 p.m. after receiving the 911 call.

One group of firefighters went in through the bedroom window, while others climbed the stairs, entered the room and carried the unconscious man through smoke and flames to safety.

It took about 15 minutes before firefighters were able to bring the fire un-

der control, according to a news release from the DeKalb Fire Department. Firefighters from Sycamore, Cortland, Maple Park, and Malta fire departments assisted in fighting the fire.

The fire caused about $40,000 damage, the release said. Val Harris said firefighters did a great job in saving the house and her grandson.

Inside the home Wednesday afternoon, the Harrises and their family members milled about the house, inspecting the damage.

Stained water dripped from between the sagging drywall joints in the kitchen ceiling, the stairs leading up to the bedrooms were covered with ashen remnants of the fire.

The smell of fire still hung in the air.

The family spent Tuesday night at the hospital and now plan on staying at a local hotel, and so long as Lyle is OK, they seem to have the resolve to move forward.

“This is nails and wood, and can be replaced,” Val Harris said of her home.

Stopgap budget again leaves out MAP grants

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Some students and colleges still will have to find alternatives to pay college tuition, as Illinois’ stopgap budget takes care of outstanding balances from last school year but doesn’t address the upcoming one.

State lawmakers reached an agreement June 30 on an interim budget to last until January, which Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the same day.

The spending plan was meant to get state bills paid through the end of the year. But when it comes to the Monetary Award Program, the bills to be

paid are from the July 1, 2015, to June 30.

MAP grants are designed to help college students from low-income households afford tuition and fees.

“The $151 million appropriated for MAP in the latest bridge funding bill was specifically meant to cover the remainder of fiscal 2016 MAP claims,” said Lynne Baker, spokeswoman for the Illinois Assistance Commission, which administers MAP grant funds.

Kishwaukee College officials said the school was not able last fall and spring semesters to front students the state aid and await reimbursements.

The college won’t do it this school year

either, spokeswoman Kayte Hamel said.

Last academic year, Northern Illinois University covered almost $20 million in MAP aid for as many as 5,700 eligible students, officials said.

NIU President Doug Baker said last week that the university would do so again starting this fall.

“By taking those steps, we would enter fiscal 2017 facing essentially the same circumstances as fiscal 2016,” Baker said. “That is to say that we will rely on income generated by tuition, fees and other sources to fund our operations. Also, if necessary, we will use what cash reserves we have available

to us to bridge any funding gaps.”

Money to pay bills for fiscal 2017, which began July 1, likely won’t be authorized until after the November election.

“We will not know how much will be appropriated for MAP for fiscal 2017 until the General Assembly reconvenes after Nov. 15,” Baker said. “And while we are hopeful, based on what we heard from the General Assembly with respect to their desire to support funding for fiscal 2017 MAP, as with last fall, this continues to leave students and schools with a level of uncertainty about when MAP will be funded for the 2016-17 school year.”

Born: Nov. 3, 1930 Died: July 4, 2016

James E. Rogers, age 85 of Dixon passed away Monday, July 4, 2016, at Serenity Home and Hospice in Oregon.

He was born Nov. 3, 1930, in Ashton, the son of Paul and Madge (Bridgewater) Rogers.

Jim graduated from Big Rock High School in 1948 and joined the Air Force in 1951 as an airman. He graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1960 and married Anita Overby in Malta.

Jim was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in 1968 and retired from the Air Force in 1988, having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He was promoted to full Colonel status in May 1988, but was notified 3 weeks later that his commission would end in September 1988, so the Air Force withdrew his Full Colonel commission. He had worked at Brad Manning Ford in DeKalb and Rochelle, and was Director of Payroll at Barber Coleman Company in Rockford/Loves Park in 1967.

Jim and 3 other individuals founded the American Payroll Association. In 1983 Jim

and his son Kevin began a 24 hour a day ambulance service, where Jim continued to work until quite recently.

Jim was a member of the Reserve Officers Assn., the American Payroll Assn. and the Illinois Ambulance Assn.

Survivors include his wife Anita, a daughter Denise (Doug) Sears, a son Kevin Rogers; 3 grandsons: James and Trenner Sears and Paul Rogers, a great-grandaughter Elli Sears, a great-grandson Donovan Sears, and his sister Dorothy Rigby of Ft. Mojave, AZ. Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margaret McBride.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, July 9, 2016, at the Jacobson Funeral Home in Shabbona. Burial with military honors will be in Johnson’s Grove Cemetery, Waterman.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday afternoon and evening July 8, 2016 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established.

Born Oct. 5, 1955, in DeKalb, he was the son of Donald and Lena (Morrison) Ziegler.

Terry was a truck driver for many years for Hueber LLC, hauling feed and later raising and feeding pigs. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, hot dogs and Diet Mountain Dew, and watching movies.

He is survived by his mother, Lena; son, John; sisters, Carolyn (Don) Douglas, Donna (Dennis) Whaley, Debbie (Mack) McClain; brother, Russell; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

The memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb with the Rev. Robert Vaughn officiating.

Cremation will follow, with burial of cremated remains at a later date at East Pierce Cemetery, Maple Park.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.

KINGSTON – A Kingston man faces several charges after he damaged his roommate’s truck and killed a dozen chickens with a rifle on Wednesday, DeKalb County Sheriff’s police said.

Bobby L. Reaves, 54, of the 9900 block of Baseline Road, was charged Wednesday with criminal damage to property, reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated animal cruelty.

Police said Reaves had been drinking when he went on a rampage in which he bashed his roommate’s truck with a hammer.

Police said Reaves also lured a dozen of roommate’s chickens with food, then shot them to death with a rifle.

Police were called to the Reaves’ home around 1:55 p.m., arrested him there, and took him to the DeKalb County Jail, where he remained Wednesday evening.

Both reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated animal cruelty charges are punishable by 1 to 3 years in prison.

Peace Road crash in wet conditions injures man DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – One person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a crash Wednesday morning at Peace Road near Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. In connection with the crash, Landon McHale, 22, of Des Plaines, was cited with driving too fast for conditions, DeKalb Deputy Police Chief John Petragallo said.

McHale was driving north on Peace Road in a blue Dodge Neon about 8 a.m., when his vehicle slid into the southbound lane and was struck on the passenger side by a Toyota Corolla driven

The victim, who lives with Fant, told officers he hit her at their home Monday, and broke her cellphone when she threatened to call police, court records show.

About that time, Fant’s mother came to pick up Fant and two children from the home. She reported hearing a gunshot coming from inside when she arrived, court records show.

Before leaving, Fant went outside, fired another shot, and passed out in his mother’s car with the gun on the passenger side floorboard, court records show.

When they arrived at Fant’s mother’s Ogle County home, she gave the gun to her husband, who locked it in a safe.

Police found a 9 mm shell casing outside the home, and a bullet hole in the door.

The bullet entered the home and hit a chair, court records show. Officers found another hole in the dining room wall.

Three guns were found in Fant’s home, not including the one at his parents’ home in Ogle County. Fant was previously convicted of felony stalking in DeKalb County and is not allowed to own a firearm.

Fant denied hitting the woman, and said he did notice the hole in the door, but claimed he didn’t cause it, court records show.

The victim told police she believes Fant will kill her, court records show.

He will return to court July 12.

If Fant is convicted of the most serious charge, aggravated discharged of a firearm, he could be sentenced to four to 15 years in prison.

Fant must post $75,000 bail to be released from the DeKalb County Jail, where he remained Wednesday afternoon.

CHICAGO – The state of Illinois has tried an unusual maneuver to save a health insurer with 49,000 Illinois policyholders from possible financial failure by blocking it from paying a $31.8 million bill to the federal government.

Illinois Department of Insurance Acting Director Anne Melissa Dowling wrote in a June 30 letter to the federal government that she has ordered Land of Lincoln Health not to pay until it gets what it’s owed by the feds – nearly $73 million – under a separate provision of President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. The order “is designed to prevent an immediate liquidation” of Land of Lincoln Health, Dowling wrote. Making the payment would trigger further state action, and legally could obligate regulators to put the company under state supervision.

“This tells me this company is in really precarious financial straits,” said Robert Laszewski, a health care consultant and former insurance executive who reviewed the letter. “How many more weeks can Land of Lincoln stay in business? It’s weeks, not years.”

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago and Pfizer announced an agreement Wednesday committing the drugmaker to disclosing the serious risks of addiction in its marketing of prescription opioid painkillers.

Chicago is suing five pharmaceutical companies, alleging they have misrepresented the benefits of opioids while concealing serious health risks associated with the drugs. Pfizer Inc. is not named in that lawsuit, and the city said it found no evidence that the company engaged in any misconduct in its marketing. Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office said Pfizer has cooperated with the city’s investigation, providing documents and other evidence relevant to Chicago’s claims against other drugmakers.

Mississippi River lock and dam closed after spill

WINFIELD, Mo. – A Mississippi River lock and dam north of St. Louis is closed after a towboat spilled more than 2,000 gallons of diesel while passing through the lock.

The spill from the vessel Jerry Jarrett happened Wednesday at Lock and Dam 25 near Winfield, Missouri, about 45 miles north of St. Louis. The cause of the spill is under investigation.

A safety net provides some protection for Illinois policyholders whose health insurance companies fail. Under the state’s insurance code, the Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association would provide coverage of up to $500,000 for basic hospital medical and surgical insurance or major medical insurance. The association is a private entity made up of state-licensed life and health insurers.

Land of Lincoln owes money in a risk adjustment program under the health care law. The program was meant to balance out the risk if some health insurers’ customers were sicker that other insurers’ customers. Small insurers, such as Land of Lincoln, have said the program is flawed and favors larger insurers with loyal, if sicker customers.

Land of Lincoln Health filed a lawsuit last month in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C., claiming the federal government had shortchanged it of risk corridor payments, a temporary provision of the health care law meant to help unprofitable insurers. At least four other insur-

Congress stopped the Obama administration from funding that program beyond what insurers paid into it, with Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and other Republicans calling the payments “massive bailouts.”

On Wednesday, Land of Lincoln President and interim CEO Jason Montrie characterized the company’s financial problems as “a timing issue.”

The state insurance regulator’s “action is designed to protect the consumers of Land of Lincoln and the marketplace in general,” Montrie said. “Land of Lincoln will commit to do everything in our power to protect consumers and the marketplace.”

Land of Lincoln is one of the Affordable Care Act’s surviving nonprofit insurance co-ops. The co-ops were funded by low-interest federal loans and established to increase competition. But many co-ops – including Land of Lincoln – have been faltering financially.

Nationwide, more than a dozen of the original 23 co-ops have closed. On Tuesday, Connecticut’s insurance commissioner announced that nonprofit health insurer HealthyCT must be placed under state supervision to protect the company’s 40,000 policyholders.

U.S. District Court warns of false-document scams

CHICAGO – Federal officials are warning residents to beware of scams in which fraudulent court documents seek payments or personal financial information.

The Chicago-based U.S. District Court for Northern Illinois said people have reported receiving emails with official-looking papers that claim to be from the court.

A court statement said some of the documents may tell recipients that they’re entitled to money from a class action settlement. The messages may add that recipients must first send in a payment themselves or provide their financial details before they get any settlement money.

Some documents could include a judge’s forged signature or a forged court seal.

Man involved in robbery that led to crash charged

CHICAGO – A man has been charged in connection with a robbery that led to a high-speed chase and a crash that left two dead and four Chicago police officers injured.

Michael Cokes of Alsip is charged with robbery and is being held in the Will County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond. It wasn’t immediately known if Cokes has an attorney.

The manager of a Tinley Park fastfood restaurant was robbed Friday in the parking lot as she was heading for a bank. The chase began when Illinois State Police spotted the getaway vehicle on Interstate 57. Several police agencies joined the chase. The suspect car collided with a police vehicle after exiting the expressway.

Two men, 22-year-old Ronald Arrington of Chicago, and 26-year-old Jimmy Malone, whose address was unknown, were killed.

No end to Afghan war: Obama slows withdrawal

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama scrapped plans Wednesday to cut American forces in Afghanistan by half before leaving office, a dispiriting blow to his hopes of extricating the U.S. after 15 years of fighting. He said he’ll leave 8,400 troops to address the country’s “precarious” security situation.

Obama’s new drawdown plan, announced alongside top military leaders, reinforced the likelihood that the U.S. will remain entangled in Afghanistan for years to come as America works to suppress a resurgent Taliban and train a still-struggling Afghan military. Indeed, Obama said his goal was to ensure the next president has the foundation and flexibility to fight terrorism there “as it evolves.”

Obama acknowledged that few Americans might have expected U.S. troops still would be in Afghanistan this long after the 2001 invasion after the 9/11 attacks. But he said perseverance was needed to prevent al-Qaida from regrouping and the Islamic State group from spreading.

He said if terrorists regain control of territory, they’ll try to attack the U.S. again.

“We cannot allow that to happen. I will not allow that to happen,” he said.

Obama, who had revised the exit plan several times before, had most recently expected to leave 5,500 troops when his term ends in January, down from roughly 9,800 there currently.

His move to slow that withdrawal reflected the

Afghan military’s continuing inability to secure the nation independently, demonstrated by escalating Taliban attacks that have killed scores in recent weeks.

The new plan, announced the day before Obama attends a NATO summit in Poland, marked the culmination of a delicate debate within his administration about how many troops to pull out – if any.

Although U.S. officials said Obama had accepted the Pentagon’s formal recommendation of 8,400 troops, top military leaders had urged the White House to stay closer to the current 9,800. Republicans to examine FBI decision on Clinton emails

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Irate that Hillary Clinton will not face criminal charges over her emails, House Republicans are summoning FBI Director James Comey to Capitol Hill to answer their questions.

Comey will testify today before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the panel’s chairman, Jason Chaffetz of Utah, announced Wednesday. The announcement came a day after Comey rebuked Clinton for “extremely careless” behavior in her handling of classified emails as secretary of state, but declared that “no charges are appropriate” in the case.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in a statement Wednesday evening that she was accepting Comey’s recommendation and the case would be closed.

“There are a lot of questions that have to be answered. And so we’re going to be asking those questions,” House Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters, adding that it looked like Clinton had gotten preferential treatment. “We

have seen nothing but stonewalling and dishonesty from Secretary Clinton on this issue, and that means there are a lot more questions that need to be answered.”

Ryan said Clinton should be barred from receiving classified briefings in the course of the campaign. He said he would be looking into whether Congress could take action to enact such a prohibition. And asked whether a special prosecutor should be appointed in the case, Ryan said he wouldn’t “foreclose any option.”

Ryan’s comments reflected widespread anger, even disbelief, among Republicans over Comey’s announcement.

Comey delivered a stinging assessment of Clinton’s handling of classified emails, saying she should have known not to have sensitive discussions on an unclassified system and that she sent and received emails that were classified at the time, contrary to her claims. But he followed up by saying no reasonable prosecutor would bring charges in such a case, partly because his investigators found no intentional or willful mishandling of classified information.

In clearing Clinton of breaking the law, FBI Director James Comey was scorching in his criticism of the Democratic nominee, saying she was “extremely careless” in handling classified information on a private email account and personal internet server.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Standing on Atlantic City’s famed Boardwalk, Hillary Clinton ripped Donald Trump as a “shameful” businessman who contributed to the decline of the oceanfront resort town and would be just as disastrous for America’s workers as president.

“What he did here in Atlantic City is exactly what he’ll do if he wins in November,” Clinton warned Wednesday, the faded facade of Trump Plaza, a shuttered hotel formerly owned by the presumptive Republican nominee, just over her shoulder.

Clinton’s remarks were part of a growing effort by her campaign to undercut Trump’s business reputation, which Democrats believe is greatly overhyped and based more on his ability to attract publicity than actual private sector skills. In the coming weeks, she is expected to highlight “victims” of Trump’s business ventures, including contractors who went unpaid – echoing a strategy Democrats employed successfully against 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney.

Trump has defended his record in the gambling town, saying he “created thousands of jobs and made a lot of money in Atlantic City, which was what, as a businessman, I am supposed to do for my company and my family.”

Earlier Wednesday, he blamed Atlantic City’s troubles on politicians’ “big mistakes.”

Remove law that led to flag burner’s arrest On the Fourth of July, a young man from Urbana posted a photo of himself burning an American flag on Facebook.

It was classic attention-seeking behavior – one of the photos shows the 22-year-old wearing a black T-shirt, khaki shorts and flip-flops, a flower garland on his head as he holds a burning flag.

He wrote three paragraphs that accompanied the photo, in which he says he’s not proud to be an American.

According to the Champaign News-Gazette, he closed his rant by saying he wasn’t proud of his country and “I will demonstrate my feelings accordingly. #ArrestMe.” Unfortunately, Urbana police eventually took the bait and made the ill-advised decision to arrest Bryton Mellott for disorderly conduct and flag desecration.

In other words, an American was arrested on the Fourth of July for exercising his freedom of speech on social media.

Mellott’s self-expression led to expressions of outrage and anger, and then threats against not only him but his employer, a local Wal-Mart store.

In other words, he got what he wanted – attention.

Police later contacted Mellott and asked him to stop with the anti-America speech.

Mellott continued, though, and eventually police arrested him. On Tuesday, the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office said he would not face charges.

Flag desecration laws were found unconstitutional in a 1989 Supreme Court decision, Texas v.

Johnson. This decision – which included conservative and liberal justices on the majority side – recognized flag burning as symbolic speech, protected by the First Amendment.

Illinois lawmakers should remove this law from the books so that no other attention-seekers are arrested and allowed to claim victimhood when they’re more deserving of scorn.

All of us should remember that freedom of speech applies not only to opinions that we like, but also those we find abhorrent. We also are free to speak out against the fringe opinions of others; there is no law protecting people from consequences for their speech.

It’s also safe to say that those making fools of themselves by posting outrageous opinions on social media will be seen for what they are – there’s no need to threaten them.

Arresting them only makes it worse.

A case of classroom censorship

Higher education’s commitment to free speech is often sadly fragile these days, and the latest evidence unfortunately comes from the University of Northern Colorado.

As The Tribune in Greeley recounts the story, an outfit that UNC calls its Bias Response Team has “sought to ‘strengthen’ a professor’s teaching by censoring what that professor can cover in class, and has advised another professor not to discuss some sensitive issues at all to avoid offending students.”

Mind you, these were cases in which the professors sought to air both sides of controversial topics, “including transgender issues.” But students offended by the presentation of arguments they opposed complained to the Bias Response Team, which initiated a crackdown on the professors’ academic freedom.

“I advised him not to revisit transgender issues in his classroom if possible to avoid the student’s expressed concerns,” a Bias Response Team member wrote regarding one professor.

The Tribune’s report was based on documents first obtained by HeatStreet, an online publication, and amplified by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, an invaluable advocate for free speech on college campuses.

Dean of students Katrina Rodriguez did express second thoughts to The Tribune regarding the incidents, but not in the decisive fashion we’d have liked. “I would say that there are some aspects that we can revisit,” she said. “There could

have been perhaps another way to look at this.”

Perhaps? There most definitely is “another way” besides allowing students to dictate class content based upon their personal desire not to hear an opinion they find offensive.

Students who can’t abide differing opinions on controversial subjects perhaps should postpone college until they develop greater psychological strength. Because college is all about exploring a range of opinions and theories – or at least it’s supposed to be.

Sen. John Cooke, R-Greeley, a graduate of the school, made this point eloquently in a recent letter to UNC President Kay Norton.

“It appears UNC leadership has decided that so-called ‘tolerance and diversity’ is justification for intolerance and intimidation,” Cooke wrote.

“God forbid someone say something offensive!” he added. “But if someone does, have faith that young adults can handle, discuss and debate the comment. Foster an environment that gives confidence to respond. That’s how you can help them become intellectually stronger. Instead, you choose to treat them like infants who need the Bias Response Team to parachute in to the rescue based on some anonymous complaint.”

The entire idea of a Bias Response Team responding to anonymous complaints has an unsettling aura about it.

Cooke is right to be concerned about his alma mater.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

It’s a different approach from the one taken by recent presidents from Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama.

Reagan imposed trade barriers on occasion – but he also vetoed protectionist legislation, oversaw negotiations to lower trade barriers around the globe, and started the process of creating the North American Free Trade Agreement, which Trump reviles.

Obama imposed tariffs to help the tire industry but also concluded some bilateral free-trade deals – Trump thinks they’re bad ones – and pushed for new multilateral ones such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The most successful protectionist policy of recent decades is generally considered to be the rescue of Harley-Davidson.

Tariffs in the 1980s seem to have given the company time to turn itself around (although just how important the tariffs were still is the subject of dispute).

Automakers benefited from protectionism at that time, too, raising their prices and profits. But they didn’t use the opportunity to reform.

The semiconductor protectionism of the period was controversial because of its effects on industries that used semiconductors: They complained that for them protection meant shortages, higher costs, and lost sales and jobs.

Unintended harm to American companies is a recurring problem with tariffs, even those meant to protect American jobs from competition that our government deems unfair.

After Bush imposed steel tariffs, steel-consuming industries pointed out that they employed far more Americans than the steel industry itself, and argued that the net effect of the policy on jobs was negative.

Anti-dumping laws, which put tariffs on foreign imports that are supposedly being sold at too low a price, usually target intermediate goods and therefore make the downstream American producers that use them less competitive.

Daniel Ikenson, a trade-policy analyst at the Cato Institute, notes that the government, perversely, is forbidden by law from considering the impact of tariffs on these producers before levying the tariffs.

Then there’s the question of costs.

Gary Hufbauer and Sean Lowry, a

senior fellow and research associate, respectively, at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, calculated that Obama’s tariffs on Chinese tires cost American consumers at least $900,000 for every job they saved for one year.

That’s before taking account of job losses caused by lower spending by consumers on other products and by retaliatory Chinese tariffs. This very high cost per job, they point out, is consistent with research on other instances of trade protection.

In an interview, Hufbauer notes that our efforts to protect industries from competition have typically not resulted in their revival and impose extremely high costs for any jobs they save.

He cites the textile and maritime industries, both of which have been protected for decades, as examples of these disappointing results.

“Watching on the sidelines” as jobs are lost does not sound like a very appealing policy.

But it might have been better than what our government has actually done, and what Trump would have our government do more of.

Fox News’s Megyn Kelly destroys Hillary on email statements

The Washington Post FBI Director James B. Comey yesterday handed the media a grave responsibility – that of comparing what Hillary Clinton has said over and over in defending her email setup as secretary of state vs. what the FBI discovered in its lengthy investigation of the scandal.

Fox News host Megyn Kelly accepted the assignment with considerable industry.

It wasn’t a complicated task, requiring only that Kelly & Co. retrieve comments from Clinton regarding her private email server and then place them alongside Comey’s blistering statement from yesterday morning.

Case in point, via Kelly: CLINTON: I never sent or received any classified material. They are retroactively classifying it.

COMEY: From a group of 30,000 emails returned to the State Depart-

ment in 2014, 110 emails in 52 email chains have been determined by the owning agency to contain classified information at the time they were sent or received.

There’s much, much more. For instance, the whole issue of whether Clinton forked over all her work emails to the State Department: CLINTON: I have absolute confidence that everything that could be in any way connected to work is now in the possession of the State Department.

COMEY: The FBI also discovered several thousand work-related emails that were not among the group of 30,000 emails returned by Secretary Clinton to state in 2014.

And so it went. Kelly also checked Clinton’s claim that the email setup was connected to her wish to rely on just one device.

After she showed Comey’s pushback on this particular point, she raised her eyebrows to rafter level.

She also gave some attention to

Clinton’s claim that the shebang was “allowed” under the rules.

COMEY: “None of these emails should have been on any kind of unclassified system. They were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information.”

When colleague Brit Hume was brought in to comment on the presentation, he said, “Well, you did a very good job there of setting forth just how Comey’s statement just blew up this tissue of lies that has been told by Secretary Clinton throughout this case.”

And to think that Kelly & Co. might have taken it a bit easy on the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Adding to the list of falsehoods and contradictions, Time magazine yesterday published an extraordinary story outlining a spat that it carried on with the Clinton campaign over one wrinkle of the email scandal.

In a March 2015 article titled “The Clinton Way,” Time writer David von

Drehle noted that lawyers for Clinton sorted the secretary’s emails through processes such as keyword searches, although they didn’t actually read each of the 60,000-plus missives. That detail was based on a fact sheet distributed by the Clinton campaign.

The Clinton people objected to Time’s version of events.

“Every one of the more than 60,000 emails were read. Period,” wrote Clinton aide Nick Merrill at the time.

The magazine published a follow-up story to account for the campaign’s objections.

And what did Comey say yesterday?

“The lawyers doing the sorting for Secretary Clinton in 2014 did not individually read the content of all of her emails,” the FBI director said.

We have been pushovers for too long when it comes to trade, Donald Trump said.

In a speech in Pennsylvania this week, he said: “When subsidized foreign steel is dumped into our markets, threatening our factories, the politicians do nothing. For years, they watched on the sidelines as our jobs vanished and our communities were plunged into depression-level unemployment.”

He did, however, put in a kind word for the tariffs the Reagan administration imposed in the 1980s to protect U.S. semiconductor and motorcycle industries.

Trump’s history is wrong. Far from doing nothing, politicians have adopted measures to protect American steelmakers from foreign competition during the Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Reagan and George W. Bush administrations. Our actual practice has been to work toward a world with lower trade barriers while also offering protection for specific industries, in response to import surges and political outcries.

Trump would break from that history while ignoring one of its lessons: The protection we have offered has been expensive and achieved little.

DeKalb Boxing Club’s second year well underway

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Ron Hansen isn’t exactly a big fan of either mixed martial arts or professional boxing, but when it comes to amateur boxing, it’s a whole different ballgame.

Hansen founded the DeKalb Boxing Club in April 2015, and in its second year, it numbers 32 members, including six competitive fighters.

“I fought out of Racine, Wisconsin, and it was a lot of opportunity,” Hansen said. “Amateur boxing is some of the best boxing out there. It’s fallen off over the years, but the opportunities are still there.

“Things like MMA have come up, but the difference with boxing is that there’s so much more opportunity, because it’s been around so much longer. Every state has a Golden Gloves tournament, every country has an Olympic team.”

He said he started the nonprofit with an assist from Bill Ryder, who he said donated the club’s storefront space in a strip mall on Lincoln Highway.

Club members competed at the Chicago Golden Gloves tournament in March, with Erik Bellows finishing second after scoring a TKO in the semifinals. Fighters Davyon Bradley, Dylan Hansen and Freeman Cole lost in the first round.

Last week, Hansen and Bradley picked up wins at a show in Schaumburg, while Christian Camacho lost a 2-1 split decision.

Bradley, Bellows and Kenny Lawson are 25 while Cole, Hansen and Camacho are 16.

Cole said he used to box in Chicago, and picked the sport up again when he moved to DeKalb. He said he played football on the DeKalb High School sophomore team, but is too busy with boxing and doesn’t plan on going back to football this season.

“I like it ’cause it’s a one-man sport,” Cole said. “It’s all on you. In football, you have to depend on your team and I don’t particularly like depending on people. If I lose, it’s my flaws, it’s my shortcomings I need to make up and do better next time.”

Camacho, also a student at DeKalb, said he enjoys boxing because it provides him a way to channel some aggression.

“I wasn’t in the streets a lot, but I

was getting there,” Camacho said. “I just prefer doing this and staying out of trouble.

“I really like boxing ’cause it keeps me out of trouble and can make me into something great,” he said. “It’s a hard sport, but I like it. I think I’m going to be doing this for a long time.”

Frank Nunez, a coach in the program who said he fought professionally in the 1980s, said the club gives young people an outlet they need.

“They don’t have anywhere to go,” Nunez said. “There’s nothing they can do with all that pressure inside. This is one of the things that can help.”

Hansen said most of the members of the clubs are 18 to 30 years old, and are more interested in getting a workout than knocking opponents out.

“They’re doing it to just be in shape, and I more than welcome those folks,” Hansen said. “What I suggest is to let me and Frank train them as if they were going to fight, and in turn they get in the best shape of their lives.”

Maybe it’s just the way it’s going to be with this team all year.

The fun-loving Cubs – the team opponents seem to love to hate – could barely enjoy the moment of their All-Star haul on Tuesday before the social-media backlash began over their MLB-high seven selections.

Shortstop Addison Russell got the early brunt of it – his MLB.com Twitter announcement filled with comments ranging from “not even close to worthy” to “freaking joke” to “lmao.”

The Washington Post featured him under the heading “what fans got wrong.”

“It is what it is,” said Russell – who has three home runs, a double and six RBIs in three games since moving to the fifth spot in the Cubs order. “I’ve never been one to listen to what anyone says or speculate how they think I play the game. I know how I play the game. I know what I bring to the table, and ultimately I know where my growth is going to be.

Seager was selected as a reserve; Story earned a spot on the fans’ final-vote ballot. The two others were left out.

“It stinks,” second-time All-Star Kris Bryant said of the criticism. “And then you just watch these TV shows, too. And some guys are talking about who deserves to be there.

“I’m hearing some of it, too,” Bryant added. “I think everybody here is.”

It wouldn’t be anything new for this team, which drew sideways glances from fans and opponents from afar almost as soon as they were installed as Vegas favorites to win the World Series and then decided to “embrace the target” – along with embracing mimes and wacky costumes on themed road trips.

Apparently getting off to the hottest start in baseball didn’t help to endear them to the rest of baseball.

Not one of the Cubs’ infielders finished first on the players’ All-Star ballots.

Warren does job, but Cubs lose 12th of 17

jtolentino@suntimes.com Right-hander Adam Warren did his part in a spot start Wednesday against the Reds, but the rest of the day didn’t go so well for the Cubs in a 5-3 loss at Wrigley Field.

“He did an outstanding job,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of Warren, who retired the last 11 batters he faced and gave the bullpen a 3-1 lead. He struck out six and gave up one run, a homer by Zack Cozart to start the game.

Tucker Barnhart had the decisive blow with a three-run homer in the seventh inning against Trevor Cahill.

Maddon expects Warren to get another spot start after the All-Star break.

“I was pleased with the way I threw the ball,” Warren said. “It’s nice to be able to give the starters a break during a long stretch.”

Shortstop Addison Russell, who was named a starter for the National League All-Star team Tuesday, was one of the more productive Cubs in the series. He had three home runs, a double and seven RBI. But the Cubs lost the series, and they’ve dropped 12 of their last 17 games.

“I really can’t explain it right now,” Russell said. “Obviously, the past few weeks, it hasn’t been working. But we still have high hopes and high faith.”

NOTES: To make room on the roster for Adam Warren, veteran righthander Joel Peralta, who joined the

bullpen last week, was designated for assignment. He allowed four earned runs in four innings.

• The Cubs put catcher David Ross, who left the game Tuesday after taking a hard foul ball off his mask, on the seven-day disabled list for concussions.

• Infielder Tommy La Stella (hamstring) was activated after spending four weeks on the disabled list and started at third base. He singled and scored in four at-bats.

• When catcher Miguel Montero caught Jay Bruce trying to steal second base in the ninth, it marked the first time in eight tries in the last two games that the Reds were thrown out. Billy Hamilton (three), Jose Peraza (two), Brandon Phillips and Zack Cozart were successful.

Could the All-Star backlash and criticism be about the “target” thing?

“Maybe a little bit,” Bryant acknowledged. “But I think it’s more just in general the world we live in nowadays, which is sad.

“It’s just part of society now, to maybe undercut someone’s achievements. I think it’s just important for us to tune that out. It’s a skill you need in this game. I learned that [as a well-known prospect] in high school.”

The Cubs’ recent struggles on the field might only be encouraging the critics. The Cubs’ 5-3 loss Wednesday to the last-place Reds was their 12th loss in 17 games.

“The way we’re approaching what we’re doing right now hasn’t changed from the beginning of the season,” said veteran Jason Hammel, who could have made his own All-Star case each of three years in a row. “Obviously, we’re not playing as well as we did during the beginning of the season. When that happens people will talk.

“Even if you do something well, there’s going to be somebody that says you’re not doing it the right way.”

As for Russell who’s on pace for 20 home runs and almost 100 RBIs as one of the better fielding shortstops, Bryant says the critics are uninformed.

“We would not be where we are without him,” he said. “And I think that’s kind of a definition of an All-Star what he does for the team. We certainly would not have as many wins as we do if we didn’t have Addison at shortstop.”

Said Hammel: “It’s noise. It’s just noise.”

With a 14-2 record, 2.93 ERA and 118 strikeouts, Sale is the leading Cy Young contender, somewhat comfortably ahead of the Indians’ Danny Salazar, according to The MLB Cy Young Tracker.

“Five-time All-Star, well-deserved,’’ Cooper said. “I’m proud of him. I’d love to see him start the game, I’d love to see him only go one in the game. Somewhere afterward, we’ll plug him in [the rotation], but it’s not gonna be too soon.

The beat goes on for the White Sox, who defeated the New York Yankees 5-0 Wednesday to claim their fifth consecutive winning series.

The Sox (44-41) took two of three games from the Yankees (41-43), including the rubber game behind righthander Miguel Gonzalez’ seven scoreless innings before 21,144 fans at U.S. Cellular Field.

A four-run second, which started after Yankees starter Michael Pineda (3-8) retired the first two batters, gave Gonzalez (2-4, 4.39 ERA) a cushion to work with. In succession, Avisail Garcia’s two-out single to left scored Brett Lawrie, J.B. Shuck’s ground-rule double to left scored Dioner Navarro and Tim Anderson’s double down the third-base line scored Garcia and Shuck.

Lawrie extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Chris Sale won’t be holding anything back.

Don Cooper knows this, which is why the White Sox’ protective pitching coach hopes Sale goes one inning and not two in the All-Star Game, which Sale probably deserves to start.

“I even asked him,’’ Cooper said.

“I said, ‘What are you gonna be going with?’ And he said, ‘I’m gonna get after it.’ Makes sense.’’

Sale, named to his fifth All-Star team in five years – he hasn’t missed one since he became a starting pitcher – is a high-octane guy who has, with Cooper’s guidance, learned to hold back and take something off his velocity and effort levels for the greater good.

He’ll be pumped to the max when he faces the National League All-Stars in San Diego.

“I’m not going to reserve anything when I get in there,’’ Sale said. “I fully intend on letting it eat when I get out there, whenever that is. It’s hard not to. You’ve got a packed crowd, you’re facing the best, so you better bring it.’’

He hopes he’ll be bringing it to the National League’s leadoff batter.

Kansas City manager Ned Yost will name the starter Monday. Sale, who makes his last start before the game Friday when the Sox host the Atlanta Braves, pitched in relief in 2012 in Kansas City (one scoreless inning), 2013 in New York (two perfect innings, two strikeouts, winning pitcher) and 2014 in Minnesota (one inning, one run).

A start would be “awesome,” he said.

“That would be such a thrill. I’ve always been there and seen the start of the game and just everything that goes into it. I would be thrilled to do that.’’

The Sox powers that be, Cooper included, frowned on the idea of pitching Sale in the game at Cincinnati last season, which is why Yost didn’t use him. Sale had thrown 115 pitches against the Cubs on the Saturday before the game. This time, he’ll have three days rest and won’t pitch again till next Sunday at the latest, five days after the Midsummer Classic.

Cooper knows Sale will give it everything he’s got “and that’s why I’m hoping it’s one inning getting after it rather than two. But after one if he wants another one and he says something to them, they give it to him ...

Messi given 21 months for tax fraud, likely to avoid prison

MADRID – Lionel Messi and his father were sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud by a Barcelona-based court Wednesday, with both sentences likely to be suspended.

The court found the Barcelona star and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, each guilty of three counts of defrauding tax authorities of 4.1 million euros ($4.6 million).

In Spain, sentences of less than two years for first offenses are usually suspended, meaning neither man would go to jail.

That decision, however, rests with the court.

The court also fined Messi 2 million euros and his father 1.5 million euros.

Messi’s management company said later Wednesday that Messi and his father would appeal the sentences.

Once lodged, the appeal will be heard in a higher court in Madrid.

During the four-day trial last month, Messi and his father denied any wrongdoing. Both said the player was unaware of the tax issues that led to the fraud charges.

Video shows Lakers’ Nick Young holding firework that bursts

LOS ANGELES – It looks as if Los Angeles Lakers guard Nick Young hasn’t learned much about fireworks safety from New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul.

TMZ Sports has posted a Snapchat video of Young holding up a firework in his hand as it explodes. TMZ said the video was taken at a Fourth of July party, and Young wasn’t injured.

The Lakers said they have no comment on it. Young’s agent hasn’t responded to a request for comment.

Pierre-Paul is featured in a public service announcement produced by the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission about fireworks safety and released last week.

MIAMI – Dwyane Wade is going home, making what he called “an extremely emotional and tough decision” Wednesday night to leave the Miami Heat after 13 seasons and sign with the Bulls.

Wade will sign a two-year deal with the Bulls, one that will pay him about $47 million. Miami offered $40 million over two years for Wade to stay in the uniform that he’s worn his entire career, the one in which he was an AllStar 12 times, a champion three times and the NBA Finals MVP in 2006 when his rise to superstardom was just truly beginning.

And he’s taken that uniform off now for the final time.

“This was not an easy decision, but I feel I have made the right choice for myself and my family,” Wade wrote in a letter to Miami, released to The Associated Press.

It ends a second consecutive summer of will-he-or-won’t-he talk and worry in Miami, which was able to keep him last summer after contentious negotiations led to a $20 million, one-year deal. The Heat spoke with him Wednesday in New York in an effort to keep him, the same day that Wade also took meetings with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Den-

ver Nuggets.

Whether the Bulls ever got into the same room with Wade was unclear Wednesday night. What was clear was that whatever the Bulls said, and however they said it, was enough to get him out of Miami this time, after they missed on him twice before.

And even more clear was that the lure of home – just as it was for Wade’s close friend LeBron James two years ago, when he left Miami to go back to northeast Ohio and rejoin the Cleveland Cavaliers – was too strong this time to ignore.

“Watching the Bulls growing up inspired me at an early age to pursue my dream of becoming a basketball player,” Wade wrote in the letter. “My most treasured memories were watching my dad play basketball on the courts of Fermi Elementary School and developing my game at the Blue Island Recreation Center. I have never forgotten where I came from, and I am thankful to have an opportunity to play for the team that first fueled my love of the game.”

He was beloved in South Florida, where the county was even once renamed “Miami-Wade County” instead of Miami-Dade for a time in 2010 during the summer when Wade managed to convince Chris Bosh and James to join him and build a team that would go to the NBA Finals four consecutive times.

Not your typical origami Exhibit unfolds craft’s beauty as large-scale art

emember those origami cranes you meticulously folded out of tiny slips of paper in elementary school? Imagine them 100 times larger, as a massive swan made out of corrugated board, its swooping wings stretching the length of a room.

That piece, “Ruga Swan” by Chinese artist and designer Jiangmei Wu, is one of many large-scale origami artworks in the exhibit “Above the Fold: New Expressions in Origami,” at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles until Aug. 21. The show opened in January 2015 in Springfield, Massachusetts, and will have been in nine cities by the time it closes in 2020 in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Featuring nine international contemporary artists, the exhibit explores origami, the 1,000-year-old Japanese tradition of folding paper into objects, as much more than small-scale craft.

“Everyone has seen the cranes. A lot of people are not aware of what can be done with folded paper in the art world,” said the exhibit’s curator Meher McArthur. “These pieces are very complex and abstract. It’s not what you typically consider origami.

They’re much more sculptural.”

American origami master Robert Lang’s “Vertical Pond II” showcases groups of colorful koi fish – sculpted out of 60 uncut sheets of paper – lining a wall. Nearby, his “Pentasia” is made with 500 squares of yellow and gray paper folded, interlocked and stacked like a miniature city.

Japanese artist Yuko Nishimura’s 3-D, wall-mounted pieces include a complicated display of pleated white circles within circles called “Shine.”

Based in Israel with his Israeli artist wife Miri Golan, who has three works in the exhibit, British artist Paul Jackson called his untitled piece a reflection on how “notions of front, back, left, right become one during the process of folding.” Hanging from the ceiling, the installation features four panels, two of them showing photo images of the front of his hands, and two showing the back of his hands.

Jackson combined digital prints and a folding technique to create the two-sided images.

While McArthur noted that YouTube videos are good resources for origami beginners, Jackson and Golan suggested learning the art from books.

They also recommended the website OrigamiUSA.com for local and global classes, groups and conventions.

Newbies can start with straightforward designs such as cranes, boxes and boats using a simple square piece of paper.

Golan, like Jackson, discovered origami as a kid. She later founded the Israeli Origami Center, which trains and places origami teachers in Jewish, Muslim and Christian schools, and Folding Together, an organization showcasing origami as a way to unite Israeli and Palestinian children. She

also developed the program Origametria, which uses origami to teach geometry in schools.

Each of her pieces in the exhibit, including two scrolls connected by a twisted, pleated, white sheet of paper and resembling both the Jewish Torah and Muslim Quran, took roughly four to six days to complete.

“The exhibition gives me a chance to bring together my professional and personal sides in a series of works that express my frustrations with the situation here in the Middle East,” Golan said.

Canadian father-son artistic partners Martin Demaine, 73, and Erik Demaine, 35, both based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, work in a field known as “computational origami.” It’s a branch of computer science that studies math algorithms for solving paper-folding problems.

The pair’s sleek, looping, curving “Destructors” and “Together” sculp-

tures are made of circles of paper that bend according to natural creases and are interwoven through holes in the center of each circle, explained Martin Demaine.

“Our work grows directly out of our decades collaborating together in mathematics and sculpture,” said Erik Demaine, who joined MIT’s faculty at age 20.

Paper is also, of course, vulnerable.

Installing, packing and shipping largescale origami is challenging (issues include humidity).

French artist Vincent Floderer takes on the idea of fragility, said McArthur. Made of crumpled and inflated tissue paper, the sea urchin-like creatures of Floderer’s “Unidentified Flying Origami” dangle from the ceiling.

“These pieces were not made to last,” said McArthur. “They’re actually made to decompose and be like nature, to be born and then die.”

DeKalb Band concert features soprano soloist DAILY CHRONICLE Christine Monteiro will be the featured vocalist at the next DeKalb Municipal Band Concert on July 12, along with the trombone section playing Henry Fillmore’s classic novelty piece, “Lassus Trombone.”

The concert will take place at 8 p.m. at the Dee Palmer Band Shell at Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

Monteiro, lyric soprano, is the director of Celebration Chorale, and the female vocalist and lead trumpet for Jazz in Progress.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in vocal music performance from Northern Illinois University, and has been a featured vocalist with the DeKalb Municipal Band, Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Kishwaukee Concert Band, the Stateline Music Foundation Festival Christine Chorus, Chicago Sinfonietta, and the DeKalb Festival Monteiro Chorus, along with several area church choirs.

Monteiro is a member of the trumpet section in the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the DeKalb Municipal Band and Jazz in Progress.. She also has been heard in pit orchestras for many Stage Coach Players productions.

Her voice and trumpet can be heard on more than 20 CD recordings, including three solo albums, “Grace,” “Love in Any Language” and “Christmas Treasures.” She also has served as music director for the Waterman Community Choir and Children’s Community Theatre.

Tuesday’s concert promises a lineup of well-known band music and melodies, including “Light Cavalry Overture” and “Camelot.”

Marches include the contemporary “Thundercrest,” Edwin Franko Goldman’s “Golden Gate,“ “The Black Horse Troop” by Sousa, and “El Capeo,” a Spanish-influenced march, also labeled as a Pasodoble Flamenco.

A medley of “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “Peg O’ My Heart,” “I Want A Girl,” “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” and “12th Street Rag,” along with Leroy Anderson, Percy Grainger and the music of Duke Ellington, complement the evening’s musical entertainment.

Holy Quran exhibition planned for July 16 at Sycamore library DAILY CHRONICLE

The Chicago Northwest chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, an auxiliary wing of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, will host a Holy Quran exhibition from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at the Sycamore Public Library, 103 E. State St. in Sycamore.

The purpose of this exhibition is to provide local residents with an introduction to Islam andidentify commonalities between Islam and the other major religions of the world. The goal is to help educate and dispel common myths and misunderstandings about Islam.

Those who attend can ask any questions they may have about Muslims and Islam, including but not limited to: What is Islam?

What is the Holy Quran?

What is the status of women and their rights in Islam?

What are the prophecies of the Holy Quran?

These exhibitions are part of a 2016 national effort headed by Imam Faran Rabbani taking place in more than 60 towns across the United States.

Kishwaukee Fest returns to DeKalb County this month DAILY CHRONICLE

Kishwaukee Fest of DeKalb County returns this July with a full week of free entertainment, including concerts in the park, car shows, food events and a parade. There will be events and activities in several communities in DeKalb County.

The parade is one of the major attractions and will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, July 29, in downtown DeKalb with a “Cruise Night” of classic and muscle cars. The main event, called the “Parade of Parades,” will feature a unique collection of music groups, youth groups, several Illinois pageant queens, local business float entries, military units and additional specialty groups. This year’s parade also will feature the first Christmas Parade of the season, complete with Santa and elves. Local stores will offer “Christmas in July” sales. The theme of the 2016 parade is “Salute to Veterans.”

Another attraction will be BaconPalooza – Swine & Wine Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 30, in downtown DeKalb. This event will feature a variety of food vendors and an opportunity to sample wines from a selection of vineyards. There also will be a Corvette Car Showcase and activities for the younger generation. All the events will be at VanBuer Plaza in DeKalb.

The festival will conclude Sunday, July 31, with one of the largest car and motorcycle displays in the midwest. The Turning Back Time car show will be in downtown Sycamore.

Museum program focuses on contributions by young adults DAILY CHRONICLE

The Sycamore History Museum will host “Young Adults Making Sycamore Great” on Wednesday, July 13. This presentation is in connection with the current exhibit, “Faces of Sycamore,” which takes a look at people in the community who have made a difference.

“Often times children and young adults think that it is only grown-ups that can really make an impact in the world. Nothing can be further than the truth,” Michelle Donahoe, museum executive director, said in a news release. “This program will feature some amazing projects that have taken place due to the generous and creative young adults in our community.”

Presenters include a variety of projects taken on by local students.

Actors and mentors from the Penguin Project will perform a short skit from last year’s production “Fiddler on the Roof.” April McKay, who earned her Silver Award in Girl Scouts, will talk about her work with the Hampshire Library and Jared Bunge will discuss his Eagle Scout project at West Elementary School’s library. Finally, representatives from Sycamore High School’s History Club will talk about the video documenting a fascinating story about World War II veteran Robert Varty.

Glidden Homestead to be open for tours on Sunday

NEW YORK – GLAAD and Interscope Records have joined forces to release a song featuring Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Mary J. Blige in tribute to the victims of last month’s massacre in Orlando, Florida.

“Hands” was released Wednesday on iTunes. It also includes Selena Gomez, Imagine Dragons, Juanes, Pink, RuPaul, Meghan Trainor and Gwen Stefani.

Sales will benefit the Equality Florida Pulse Victims Fund, the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida and GLAAD. The June 12 shooting at the Pulse nightclub left 49 people dead and dozens injured. It’s the worst mass-shooting in recent U.S. history.

Jason Derulo, Kacey Musgraves, Prince Royce, Nate Ruess, Troye Sivan, Jussie Smollett, Adam Lambert, Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees, Mary Lambert and the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles also appear on the song.

Modern research methods, excavations, and old documents that were unknown for years have led to changed histories. The Chinese Export porcelain dishes that picture the signers of the Declaration of Independence originally were thought to be made about 1820 when they copied an 1817 painting by John Trumbull. The men posed while signing the document had Chinese faces, because the decorators probably had never seen a Caucasian man. Full sets were made in this pattern. Collectors and museums paid high prices for examples in the 1950s to 1970s.

The existing examples were studied and slight differences in the decoration led to the belief that this design was made for much of the 19th century. It probably was available during the 1876 Philadelphia celebration of the Centennial of the Declaration of Independence.

This led to lower prices, but large or unique pieces remain popular and high priced. A punch bowl with a diameter of 1 1 1/2 inches sold at a 2016 Skinner auction in Boston for $5,228. It pictured 13 blue stars, the men in groups, and a spread-winged eagle with a body that looks like the Union Shield. *** Q: When we lived in Keene, N.H., years ago we bought furniture from Sprague & Carleton, a local manufacturer. It was reasonably priced furniture that will outlast us. I understand the company has gone out of business. What happened?

A: Sprague & Carleton was founded by Frank L. Sprague and William Carleton in Keene, N.H., in 1899. The company started out making maple rocking chairs and settees.

Back frames of chairs were made by home workers, usually women and children.

In the late 1920s, Sprague & Carleton began making other furniture and bought furniture companies in other cities. Although some sources say the company closed in 1967, that’s just the date one of its divisions closed.

Patriot Industries bought Sprague & Carleton in 1968 and continued to operate the factories in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

According to a 1988 newspaper, the factory in Keene closed in November 1988 because of foreign competition. Many U.S. makers of wooden furniture went out of business because of the lower cost of foreign furniture and the demand for more modern furniture. *** Q: I have a tea set that belonged to my mother and has to be over 100 years old. It includes a teapot, sugar, creamer, six cups and saucers, and six plates. They are hand painted with two men and a woman and have gold trim. There are gold dragon finials on the lids of the teapot, creamer and sugar. The teapot and creamer also have gold dragons on the spout. The pieces are marked with two interlocking diamonds with the letter “T” inside of each of them. Who made this tea set and what is it worth?

A: Your tea set was made by Takito, a company in business in Nagoya, Japan, from 1880 to 1948. It’s impossible to give a value for your set without seeing it. *** Q: I bought a green scarf a few years ago that reads “The Heroes of ‘98” above a center picture of Lord Edward Fitzgerald.

The Society aimed to unite Catholics, Protestants and dissenters to expand civil rights, reform the Irish parliament and gain control from Britain, but it was not successful. Lord Edward Fitzgerald was head of the military committee that planned to start a rebellion in 1798. Fitzgerald and others were arrested before the rebellion started.

William Orr was tried for treason and sent to the gallows in 1797. Fitzgerald was shot when he resisted arrest. He died in prison. Henry Joy McCracken was arrested, court martialed and hanged. Theobald Wolfe Tone was captured and sentenced to hang but took his own life.

A warrant was issued for Robert Emmet’s arrest, but he escaped and left the country. He returned to Ireland to lead another rebellion in 1803 but was captured, tried and hanged. *** Q: I have a small soft-sided Coca-Cola cooler that has two zippered compartments.

Simply taking a deep breath is one way to start. I spoke to my Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Naomi Fisher, an endocrinologist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She advises her patients, particularly those who are prone to stress, to incorporate deep breathing in a daily routine.

One beginner method is called equal breathing. It is based on inhaling through the nose for a count of four and exhaling for a count of four. With time, this cycle can be prolonged to counts of eight in, eight out.

Another method, called guided visualization, encourages users to hold on to calming mental images as they breathe deeply.

There is only one non-drug treatment approved for hypertension by the FDA, a device called RESPeRATE. It uses musical tones to guide deep abdominal breathing.

Its goal is to reduce the number of breaths to fewer than 10 a minute, and to prolong each exhalation. Clinical trials have shown daily RESPeRATE use lowered blood pressure, sometimes as much as a blood pressure pill would have. This lowering effect also lasted long after each session.

Deep breathing may or may not eliminate the need for blood pressure medications, but it can be helpful. And if you can do it, think about how you might be able to reduce the major stressors in your life.

Dear Dr. K: Could stress be causing my high blood pressure?

Dear Reader: You bet it could. It surely contributed to my high blood pressure.

Most of us experience a lot of stress. I’m not sure today’s world is more stressful than the world of our parents or grandparents.

We might have different stressors than they did, but life always has been full of stress.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is on the rise. Like you, my patients often wonder if one (stress) is causing the other (hypertension). It turns out stress can raise blood pressure, sometimes impressively.

The fortunate flip side is reducing stress can lower blood pressure, and also tends to improve overall well-being. Deep, slow breathing is the oldest and best-known technique to decrease stress.

Let’s take a step back to understand how stress affects blood pressure. Stress revs up the autonomic nervous system – particularly the part that makes the hormone called adrenaline. This system directs many processes in our bodies we don’t control with our consciousness, such as our blood pressure and heart rate. For example, we consciously decide to lift a pan to the stove.

But when our blood pressure gets a little low, our autonomic nervous system recognizes and corrects that. We aren’t even conscious of it.

For much of human evolution, our autonomic nervous system has protected us.

When threatened, it helped us to do battle or to run – the so-called “fight or flight” response. But today this response rarely is needed and can be harmful. (An imminent deadline at work should not trigger the same stress response as an imminent attack by a lion.)

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have an 8-yearold stepson, Jeanne “Kaden,” whom Phillips I love dearly.

Kaden spends the bulk of his time with his mother on the other side of the country. When he comes to visit us in the summer, his clothing and shoes are always ragged and a few sizes too small.

My husband pays child support and buys Kaden a new wardrobe every six months. Yet every time he comes to us, he’s never wearing anything his dad and I bought him, but what appear to be hand-me-down rags. We have spoken to the mother many times about it, but nothing changes.

We feel if we stop buying clothes for Kaden it would punish him, when it is his mom who isn’t spending the child support money on the boy. We have paid for extracurricular activities (sports) only for her to not take him there. She lies and says he doesn’t want to go, but we get a different story from the boy. He says she says, “Judo isn’t a real sport.” He has gained weight, and we don’t want him to be picked on for it.
