FRANKFORT, Ky. – A county clerk who went to jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples violated the state’s Open Records Act, the Kentucky attorney general’s office said Tuesday.

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis violated the act by refusing to produce documents related to the gay marriage battle, the attorney general’s office said in an opinion.

The Open Records Act provides for costs and attorney’s fees to be awarded in some cases as well as up to $25 per day for each day the person is denied access to the record. Liberty Counsel can appeal the attorney general’s opinion.

App aims to boost awareness of crate-free livestock operations

bdraper@shawmedia.com While some farms confine their animals to small crates and crowded pens, sheep at Heatherhope Farm in Sycamore are free to stretch their legs and graze the pastures.

Heatherhope Farm is managed by retired pastor John Seraphine, who is one of 10 local farmers supported by Crate Free Illinois, which is working to create awareness about the differences between traditional farmers and concentrated animal feeding operations, where animals are confined.

Crate Free Illinois aims to help people buy directly from local farmers via its new mobile app – which includes a variety of options for DeKalb County residents.

“We believe in pasture-raised,” Seraphine said. “We believe in sheep and other ruminants have evolved over thousands and thousands of years to live on grass, so we practice what you might call intensive pasture management or grass management. You take good care of the grass and the pasture, and when needed, you don’t permit them to overgraze.”

Some of the local farms in the county on the Crate Free Illinois app include Knutson Farms in Malta, Wissman Organic Farm in Waterman, Whitfield’s Family Farm in Hinckley, Larson’s Country Market in Sandwich, and Farm Direct in Maple Park.

The sheep at Heatherhope are sheared for their wool and sold for meat.

“I think if you do confinement right, you can keep your animals healthy,” Seraphine said. “If you do the free range and you manage it well, you’re also keeping them healthy, but there is that kind of emotional side to it. It’s more satisfying in an emotional way to see sheep or cattle living a way they were evolved to live over thousands of years – to be out grazing.”

Animals raised on factory farms often are limited to tight, crowded quarters, where they are deprived of basic necessities, according to Crate Free Illinois, which is begging factory farmers to implement more humane practices.

Letting animals wander has its benefits for the land, too, Seraphine said, who trains herding dogs to keep his sheep moving.

They’re breaking the cycle of the worms, and the manure helps to fertilize the ground,” Seraphine said. “In the agriculture we do now, we’ve lost that whole rotation of the fields.”

Although Heatherhope is only a small farm, Seraphine feels strongly about keeping animals comfortable, off antibiotics whenever possible, and, above all, healthy.

“We originally got into the sheep because of the sheep dogs, but once we got into the sheep, we wanted to do it right,” he said. “Even though we have a small operation, we try to be evangelists about sharing the idea of healthy stock management.”

Ouellette said it’s important for consumers to know where their food comes from, and understand what the words on packaging mean. It’s also a good idea to support local farmers whenever possible, he said.

He said he likes the Crate Free group’s proactive approach.

“They (Crate Free Illinois) approach the problem of today’s factory farm industry and CAFO facilities with optimism and a pragmatic attitude,” Ouellette said. “They didn’t want to broadcast the issues just for the sake of awareness; they also wanted to come up with solutions that could be implemented right now.”

Tasks aplenty greet new county health director

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Lisa Gonzalez, DeKalb County’s new health director, is stepping in at a busy time of year, with budget planning for next year about to get underway and a controversial property tax referendum looming.

“DeKalb County Health Department has a really good reputation in the region,” said Gonzalez, 37, who officially became the head of the department Friday. “They have a strong board of health and a strong presence in the community.

I think that speaks volumes.”

She was selected by members of the DeKalb County Board of Health, which oversees the health department, to replace Jane Lux, who is retiring after 35 years with the department. Gonzalez will earn an annual salary of $112,881, according to the county’s finance director.

“It is evident that Lisa is well-versed in the many and varied roles of local health departments,” Lux said.

Gonzalez has returned to DeKalb County and the health department after leaving here in 2005. She first came to the area from her tiny hometown of Prophetstown, located in Whiteside County, to attend Northern Illinois University.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in community health promotion and a Master of Public Health degree, she began working in 2001 in the county health department focusing on tobacco-related health education. In 2005, Gonzalez moved on to work in public health roles in Winnebago and Boone counties. She also did some work in Nairobi, Kenya.

“The climate of public health right now is constantly changing,” she said.

“Because of the way that the budget (federal, state and local) has been, it’s really forced all public health departments to re-look at how they’re doing business.”

One of her first tasks will be to put together the health department’s fiscal 2017 budget, scheduled to be presented to the board next month. The county’s fiscal year runs Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. The health department currently has a $3 million annual budget, primarily made up of revenue from state and federal grants.

Those grant funds help pay for programs such as the supplemental nutrition program for Women Infants and Children, vision and hearing screenings, HIV case management, tobacco ed-

Public health officials statewide have reported reductions in aid over the years.

“You continue to change your structure to really look at anything you can do internally to sustain as long as you can,” Gonzalez said. “There’s a point, though, when you can’t do that anymore. If the grants continue to decline and the cost of providing the services continue to increase, there’s a point when [you can’t sustain it] any longer.”

The county’s public health budget for this year also included $400,000 from

property taxes, and about $560,000 from license, permit and inspection fees. Additionally, the health department is hoping to keep a $650,000 tax levy in place that is set to expire this year. Voters would get to respond to the request if the DeKalb County Board approves putting it on the April 2017 municipal election ballot.

Gonzalez worked alongside Lux for the past month getting acclimated to the new position, she said. Lux is expected to stay on to lend further assistance for an undetermined about of time, at an hourly rate of $64.76 an hour.

Gonzalez noted that she has come back to a department filled with familiar faces, with a number of employees still present who were here when she moved away a decade ago.

The new director said she doesn’t plan to make any big changes right away, unless money dictates otherwise.

As were her predecessors, she is tasked with maintaining programs that respond to community needs – and finding ways to pay for it.

“The good news is that [the previous administrators] set it up for me nicely,” she said.

Born: March 31, 1940; in Wallingford, KY Died: June 29, 2016; in Shabbona, IL James Carl Doyle, age 76 of Shabbona, IL, passed away on Wednesday June 29, 2016, at the home of his daughter. He was born on March 31, 1940, in Wallingford, Kentucky, the son of Hubert and Ruth (Browning) Doyle.

James retired from Caterpillar (Formerly Barber Green) in DeKalb, after 38 years as a spray painter.

Preceded in death by his parents, brother Larry Dean, infant sister Mary Jo, and infant

granddaughter Patricia Rood.

Survived by his wife of 53 years, Mildred (Farris) Doyle; daughter, Patricia (Vern) Kuper of Amboy; son, Jeff Doyle of Rockford; sisters, Ina Stout, Ella (Sam) Pollitt, Eula Washborn, Linda (Lovell) Cropper all of Kentucky, Brenda Humphries of Tennessee; brothers Billy (Daisy) Doyle, Robert Doyle, Charlie (Linda) Doyle, David (Marie) Doyle, Rick Doyle, Joe (Kim) Doyle, all of Kentucky, and Doug (Steffanie) Doyle of Tennessee; six grandchildren, Kayla (Jesse) Haenitsch, Natalyn and Mathew Rood, Jake, Chrissy, and Sarah Doyle; eight great-grandchildren Kendall, Kyler, Madison, Jestin, Jameson, Jude, Troy, Brantley.

He was a veteran of the Army. He was a member of the Shabbona/Waterman American Legion Post. James was a wonderful Husband, father and grandfather. He truly enjoyed being with his family, fishing, and camping.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday July 23, 2016, at 10:00 AM at the Bridge Church in Rochelle with a light lunch following at the church. Burial of cremains will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Shabbona.

Red Cross makes call for blood donations

DeKALB – Current blood supplies have dipped, so the American Red Cross is making an urgent call for those who can to make a blood donation.

“Right now, blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in,” said Nick Gehrig, communications director for Red Cross Blood Services.

The nonprofit emergency assistance and humanitarian aid organization reports that there have been about 39,000 fewer blood donations than needed in the past few months, leading to a shortage, Red Cross officials said in a news release calling for donors.

All blood types are needed, according to the news release.

People can schedule an appoint to donate by going online to redcrossblood.org or by calling 800-RED-CROSS (800-733-2767) or by downloading and using the free mobile app. The organization is extending its donation hours, the news release said.

Jenelle Heal, 83, passed away Monday, July 4, 2016, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

Jenelle was born March 10, 1933, to George A. and Chloe (Craven) Davidson in Black River Township, Arkansas. She married William Heal on December 31, 1950, in Powhatan, Arkansas. She cooked for many fraternities and sororities in DeKalb in addition to working at the Focus House.

Jenelle is preceded in death by two brothers, Granville Fry and Gerald Davidson; her sister, Barbara Cunningham; son-in-law, Bill Anchondo; and great-grandson, Zachery Bredesen.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Bill; six children, Linda (Tadson) Bussey of Smyrna, TN, Ron (Jan) Heal, Billy Heal, Mary Anchondo, all of Creston, Chris (Lisa) Heal of Chalen, WA, and Jason (Virginia) Heal of Sterling, IL; one sister, Lou Saunders of Imboden, AR; brother, Charles (Maggie) Davidson of Blackrock, AR; seven grandchildren, Dawn Chanchampa, Adam (Jen) Heal, TJ Anchondo, Alex and Lauren Heal, Chloe and Caleb Heal; and four great-grandchildren, Jarred Bredesen and Ethan Chanchampa, DeLaney and Riley Heal.

She was born March 22, 1945, in Terre Haute, IN. The daughter of William and Frances Houston. She married Harold L. Heather on August 1, 1987, in Batavia.

Billie was retired from AGCO Corp., where she held a variety of positions the last being Data Entry clerk. She had many hobbies. She was into a lot of hand crafts, including Crocheting, Knitting, Primative Rug hooking, to name a few. She also loved our Brittanies and horses.

Survivors include her husband, Harold; one son, Robert Jones; one daughter, Vanessa (Robert) Szumal; three grandchildren, April Hastings, Randy Holder Jr. and Cheryl Iraheta; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles (Diana) Houston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Frances Houston.

Her Visitation will be on Saturday, July 9th from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory in Sycamore, with a service beginning at 5:00 PM, with Rev. Joe Gastiger officiating.

SYCAMORE – Student members of the DeKalb County Community Foundation’s Youth Engaged in Philanthropy program have awarded more than $11,000 in grants to local schools and organizations serving youth.

The yearlong youth program, which helps local teens connect with nonprofits that serve them and their peers, concludes each year with a grant allocation meeting at which members make decisions on how to divvy up available funding.

A record 46 high school students participated in the YEP allocation meeting this year, said Noah Nordbrock, the community foundation’s

donor services and marketing director. Students came from local schools including Aurora Central Catholic High School, DeKalb High School, Genoa-Kingston High School, Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, Indian Creek High School, Somonauk High School, and Sycamore High School.

YEP members including Stephen Poorten, the 2016/2017 grants chairman, awarded $11,370 in grant funds to 10 organizations.

The grant recommendations are made by YEP members and subject to final approval from the community foundation.

3 dead; police target street gangs in city

The Associated Press CHICAGO – The July 4 weekend in Chicago ended with 50 people shot, three fatally, after the police force flooded the streets with thousands of officers and arrested dozens of gang members.

On Tuesday, a day after pointing to the statistics as “progress” in the fight against the city’s street violence, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said there were three fewer homicides this July 4 weekend than last year’s holiday weekend. And while there were 50 shooting victims compared with 48 in 2015, he noted July 4 fell on Monday this year, adding one more

CHICAGO – Abner Mikva, a liberal stalwart from Illinois who served in all three branches of the federal government, mentored a young Barack Obama and famously learned firsthand the brazen nature of Chicago’s political machine, has died.

The 90-year-old died of bladder cancer Monday at Rush University Medical Center in Abner Mikva Chicago, Steven Cohen, who is married to Mikva’s oldest of three daughters, told The Associated Press.

Mikva worked his way up from a welfare-recipient family to the Illinois House, U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Court of Appeals’ bench and later the White House as an adviser to President Bill Clinton. But his story about his initial attempt to get involved in Chicago politics became legendary in Illinois.

He described walking into the headquarters of the Chicago ward where he

“Ab Mikva was the pol ‘nobody sent’ but Illinois and America are better today because he defied the Bosses and rallied thousands to beat them,” Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said in an emailed statement.

Computers, not humans, to scan bags in TSA test

Federal officials said Tuesday that they are expanding tests to speed up airport lines and improve security.

In a first in the U.S., the Transportation Security Administration said Tuesday that it plans to begin using computed-tomography or CT scanners to inspect carry-on bags at one checkpoint in the Phoenix airport by the end of the year.

CT scanners are already used to screen checked baggage. The process is mostly automated – the scanners generate 3-D images that are analyzed by computers. Security workers only check a bag if something is suspicious.

Flag-burning protester will not face charges

URBANA – An Illinois prosecutor said she will not file charges against a man whose flag-burning protest led to his arrest on Independence Day. Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said in a statement Tuesday that she will not file charges against Bryton Bryton Mellott of Urbana Mellott because flag burning is “protected free speech.”

Pictures posted on Mellott’s Facebook page over the weekend showed him holding a burning American flag. He wrote that he’s “not proud to be an American.” The message also mentions “atrocities” committed against people of color, those in poverty, women and the LGBT community. The message appears

Toll collection begins on Elgin-O’Hare Expressway

ELGIN – Tolls are starting on the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway Route 390 in suburban Chicago.

Cashless toll collection via I-PASS started Tuesday between Lake Street and I-290. Drivers without I-PASS must pay online or by mail within seven days to avoid fines.

The cost to travel 6.5 miles from Lake Street to I-290 on the all-electronic road is $2.50, or $1.25 for people with transponders. The rate is higher for trucks.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reported some commuters are vowing to avoid the route. Eileen Szubert of Bartlett said she’ll use Lake Street and other local roads to get to work in Itasca. It will take her 10 to 15 minutes more, but she figures it will save $2.50 a day for a round trip.

Comey’s decision almost certainly brings the legal part of the issue to a close and removes the threat of criminal charges. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said last week that she would accept the recommendations of the FBI director and of career prosecutors.

“No charges are appropriate in this case,” Comey said in making his announcement.

But Comey made that statement after he delivered a blistering review of Clinton’s actions, saying the FBI found that 110 emails were sent or received on Clinton’s server containing classified information.

He added it was possible that people hostile to the U.S. had gained access to her personal email account.

“Although we did not find clear evidence that Secretary Clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws governing the handling of classified information, there is evidence that they were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information,” he said.

Comey contradicted Clinton’s past explanations in the case that she had turned over all of her emails and that she had never sent or received any emails that were classified at the time. The FBI chief said that in the course of the investigation, 110 emails in 52 email chains were determined to contain classified information at the time they were sent or received. He also found that

Yet after criticizing Clinton, her aides and the department for their actions, he said that after looking at similar circumstances in past inquiries, the FBI believed that “no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.”

Comey made the announcement just three days after the FBI interviewed Clinton in a final step of its yearlong investigation into the possible mishandling of classified information. He said he shared the FBI’s findings with no one else in the government before making his announcement, which came just hours before Clinton traveled with President Barack Obama on Air Force One to campaign together for the first time this year.

The declaration from Comey is unlikely to wipe away many voters’ concerns about Clinton’s trustworthiness, especially since the FBI director so thoroughly criticized her actions before delivering his verdict.

Feds must face problem of soldiers’ exposure

The time has come. The Pentagon and Department of Veterans Affairs must stop dragging their feet. They must own up to the serious chemical and radioactive hazards that U.S. service members were exposed to in the line of duty. It’s not as if the health damage from such exposure expires once the mission is over.

As Arla Harrell can attest, a lifetime of suffering can follow an irresponsible sergeant’s or young lieutenant’s order to step forward and serve as a test dummy for a chemical munition.

In Harrell’s case, it was a mustard gas test conducted at Missouri’s Camp Crowder in the 1940s. Despite the best efforts of Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Missouri, to get legislation passed to help make Harrell and other service members whole, the Veterans Administration is fighting her.

There’s a troubling pattern here. For tens of thousands of Vietnam War veterans, not to mention scores who trained in Panama, Agent Orange is the culprit for enduring problems caused by highly toxic dioxin. The VA continues to drag its feet on Agent Orange exposure claims, veterans say.

Thousands of veterans from the 1991 Persian Gulf War suffered debilitating health effects believed to result from chemical exposure in Kuwait and southern Iraq, and from reactions to untested vaccines administered to protect them from potential exposure to biological agents. The VA denied for years that Gulf War duty was the culprit.

The New York Times reported on June 20 that the Air Force doesn’t want to acknowledge responsibility for radiation exposure from cleanup of a 1966 crash in Spain of a B-52 bomber loaded with four nuclear bombs. The nuclear parts of the bombs didn’t explode, but radioactive fallout spread across the crash site.

Roughly 1,600 troops were ordered to the site but given minimal, if any, protective gear. Some had to use their bare hands to handle radioactive waste. The Air Force still won’t admit, 50 years later, that anyone was harmed in the Spain cleanup or a similar one in 1968 after a bomber crash in Thule, Greenland.

Private-sector employers must accept responsibility for dangers they expose their employees to. A mining executive went to prison this year for safety violations contributing to the deaths of 21 West Virginia miners in 2010.

The long succession of stories about veterans sickened during military service, who are repeatedly denied VA health care, strongly suggests the government views them as disposable assets. It’s as if officials prefer that the veterans would just die so their problems will go away.

Meanwhile, veterans and their families are left to grapple with medical debts often in the tens of thousands of dollars.

The VA’s and Pentagon’s constant obfuscation, evasion and runarounds are no way to treat those who selflessly answered their nation’s call to duty. Americans owe it to our veterans to speak out.

Make hospitals admit their errors or face penalties Medical errors, by one count, are the third-leading cause of death for Americans. Surgery mistakes, misuse of drugs or equipment, delays in treatment and the like kill at least 100,000 a year, possibly as many as half a million.

No one knows the exact number, and that points up an underlying problem: Hospitals almost universally resist confessing when a medical error hurts or kills a patient, because admitting fault can expose them to lawsuits. Getting them to overcome this reluctance is essential – to let patients and their families know the truth, and to ensure that hospitals become safer by learning from their mistakes.

The federal government has made only a token, indirect effort to push for greater truthfulness. It demands that hospitals

be accredited to qualify for Medicare funds, and the largest accrediting organization, a private group called the Joint Commission, requires hospitals to tell patients or families when something goes seriously wrong. But this rule isn’t enforced; hospitals don’t lose their accreditation when they conceal errors.

So this year, the Department of Health and Human Services is trying a new strategy: It’s recommending that hospitals quickly admit fault for their errors and offer compensation, by following a detailed set of steps. The model has been adopted by the University of Michigan Health System, MedStar Health and other hospitals, and research has demonstrated why it works: When patients and families are given the truth, they become less likely to sue.

It’s not a fail-safe solution.

After all, hospitals face an inherent conflict in determining when to call something an error and whether to offer money (and how much). The best programs acknowledge this by requiring hospital staff to recommend that patients or families get legal representation, and by submitting to outside audits to ensure compensation offers are fair. The HHS program ought to include those steps.

More important, HHS should make its plan more than just a recommendation. Hospitals should face federal penalties for failing to report errors, including, at a minimum, the loss of some Medicare funding.

The come-clean approach can save lives, and hospitals should be not just encouraged, but required, to follow it.

The unsettling reality is that Donald Trump can get elected to the White House by being a jerk. Hillary Clinton cannot.

Voters need to like female candidates more than they do male candidates.

They can dislike a man running for office and still regard him as qualified and electable.

Likeability is not a litmus test for men. It tends to be for women, according to research by Celinda Lake, a Democratic pollster. And many people, even Democratic-leaning women, do not like Clinton all that much.

Another finding is that voters seldom think that a woman candidate wins a debate with a male opponent. That might have something to do with assumptions about presentation – how a man can be viewed as tough and strong, whereas a woman with similar posturing will be viewed in a negative light. A man is still the model for what people view as a politician. Both genders tend to be more questioning of the qualifications of

female candidates.

The 2016 presidential race exemplifies this. The idea that a virtual political nobody like Trump can be held on the same plane as a person like Clinton, with a long and distinguished record of public service, is offensive.

These are the unfair headwinds Hillary Clinton has to face.

Yet there are promising signs for her.

Eighty percent of unmarried women support Clinton, according to polls, and she has a substantial lead among women voters generally. In fact, 2016 will be the first time that a majority of vote-eligible women are projected to be unmarried.

Those numbers could easily turn the election in all states, according to Celinda Lake.

But alas, polling can only predict so much. Lake emphasizes that demography is not destiny. Voters have to turn out.

To some extent, this campaign can be about challenging sexism. But it would be foolish to underestimate the extent to which such bias persists and will motivate voters.

The same goes even if Clinton wins the White House. Women and girls will not suddenly be viewed as equals and treated with respect any more than African-Americans felt racial bias and discrimination lift from their lives with the election of Barack Obama. In fact,

racism became in many ways more overt after Obama was inaugurated. One need only consider the widespread belief among white Republicans that Obama has divided the nation racially. (No, his presence in the White House just held the mirror up to America.)

Sexism will be similar for Clinton.

It’s dying, slowly. Women are certainly far better off in work and home life than they were decades ago. But gender bias affects women and girls every minute of the day – in subtle digs, unrecognized effects of long-held beliefs as well as blatant verbal attacks. It’s not fair. It’s not right. But it is America, 2016. And it will impact the election.

Lake has another prediction: When the big money gets out and civility returns to American politics, you’ll see more women running for office. And more women candidates may also bring out more women voters.

The problem is that we are not there yet. We live in a time when Donald Trump can be seriously considered as a candidate to lead the greatest nation on Earth. We clearly have work to do.

The conservative case for letting Clinton skate

Bloomberg View Conservatives are – to put it mildly – disappointed by FBI Director James Comey’s decision not to recommend criminal charges against Hillary Clinton over her use of a personal server for classified State Department emails.

The National Review’s Jonah Goldberg blogged, “I don’t get it.” Tom Fitton, the president of Judicial Watch, the nonprofit that helped bring Clinton’s emails to light, said there was a “disconnect between Comey’s devastating findings and his weak recommendation.”

The disappointment is understandable. Comey said it was quite possible that hostile powers had breached her email server. What’s more, he put the lie to Clinton’s claim that she never knowingly sent classified information through her private server.

“There is evidence to support a conclusion that Secretary Clinton should have known an unclassified system was no place for that information,” Comey said. A lower-level State Department

employee would have been disciplined or fired for discussing classified information on unclassified channels, why shouldn’t Clinton too pay a price for her recklessness?

If you’re looking for consistency and rationality, you won’t find it in the government’s handling and creation of classified information. Some officials who mishandle state secrets go to prison, while others are not prosecuted at all. The remedy to this inequality of justice is not to throw the book at Clinton, but to reform the way our government creates and protects its secrets.

To start, Clinton’s predicament is more common than one might think. J. William Leonard, who served from 2002 to 2008 as the director of the Information Security Oversight Office, told me: “If you looked at any senior government official’s unclassified email accounts you will find information that someone can go through and say, ‘Hey, that’s classified.’ ” Granted this is not the same as using a private server over the advice of security professionals, but it’s a common problem in the government.

Clinton’s case here is instructive.

While the FBI has not made public the classified information she discussed in her unclassified emails, many outlets have reported that some of this dealt with the U.S. targeted killing program.

Until recently these drone strikes were considered top secret. At the same time they were widely reported and discussed in Washington, to the point where President Barack Obama himself joked about his drone strikes at a White House Correspondents Association dinner.

“We know that until very recently the administration considered the discussion of specific targeted killing operations to be highly classified, and in fact covert action,” said Steven Aftergood, the director of the Project on Government Secrecy for the Federation of American Scientists. “Outside of government, most people find that ridiculous because it has been reported around the world.”

It’s not just drone strikes. The details of U.S. aid to the Palestinian Authority today are classified. That means it’s

technically illegal for you or me to know how much money the U.S. has withheld in compliance with a 2014 law to cut off payments to Palestinian prisoners and the families of “martyrs.” The same is true for the vast majority of documents uncovered in the 2011 raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound or the details about whether Russia has complied with its arms-control agreements.

In all of these instances, conservatives have an interest in diminishing state secrecy, not empowering it. Even for something like the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, the mishandling of classified information played a crucial role in exposing the White House narrative that the attack was really a demonstration gone awry. Had it not been for timely leaks of classified assessments, the public would not have known until after the 2012 election how many U.S. officials on the ground contradicted the White House line.

Is America ready for a two-woman presidential ticket?

It certainly seems the Clinton campaign is considering the question. Hillary Clinton made a high-profile public appearance recently with Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. They clicked so well that the Washington Post called them the “it” couple of Democratic politics.

At a rally in Ohio, Warren spoke with her customary sassy brilliance as Clinton looked on warmly. Warren for weeks used Twitter to aim her quick wit and sharp invective at the presumptive GOP nominee, Donald Trump. She showed she can play the role of the mean girl against the bully. She goaded Trump for his “goofy” hat, his simplistic sloganeering and his elite birth. Women cheered at the display of saucy sisterhood.

The public display of friendship seems to be a trial balloon, and many wondered when it would be burst by the pinprick of reality.

Two women? Could voters possibly be progressive enough to support such an estrogen-heavy ticket?

Some turned the question around: Who second-guesses a ticket with two men? Nobody, because we’ve been doing it that way for centuries.

True. But sexism is a fact of American politics. It will be front and center with Trump in the presidential race. The

SYCAMORE – As May rolled around, Sycamore athletic director Chauncey Carrick was almost to the point of losing sleep over being unable to find a suitable ninth game for the Spartans’ football program this season.

Any nightmares of having to play an eight-game schedule, however, went away as the Spartans found an opponent for Week 3. They will be playing host to Roosevelt High School of Gary, Indiana, on Sept. 10.

“You do your due diligence, any time you hear about someone looking for a game,” Carrick said. “Even if it was a rumor, we’d call. There were a few people I was probably annoying, calling them until they told me to quit calling. It was little nerve-wracking, and that’s the truth.”

Carrick said he heard Roosevelt had an opening from an AD at another school he was trying to persuade to schedule – he said he did not want to name the school.

So Carrick followed up and the rumor became a reality, with the arrangements hammered out in the middle of May. Generally, schedules are figured out more than a year ahead of time, Ryan said, and even going into December without a complete schedule is rare.

“We’ve never been this late, at least I haven’t,” said Ryan, who will be entering his 13th year as coach at Sycamore.

“We’d been working on it for a long time.

We were probably losing sleep before May – at least I was.”

Adding a little to the frustration is the fact Carrick proposed a rule change to the IHSA that would have solved this problem, creating predetermined regions based on school size that would have limited the need for scheduling – only two games would need to have been found outside of the region.

The measure failed, 395-212, in January.

Carrick said he knew the measure was a long shot when he proposed it, but also thinks it helped open a dialogue about the scheduling woes some teams face each year.

“Yes, it was frustrating thinking, ‘Hey, they could have solved this already,’” Carrick said. “But it’s also one of those deals where you have to play the cards you’re dealt, and we did what we had to do to secure that schedule.”

Carrick said he thinks the main factor in the program’s inability to fill out its schedule stems from its recent success.

Carrick said he understands that, as the Spartans have turned down some bigger, successful schools.

“Schools have turned us down that are our size, and some that are bigger,” Carrick said. “But we’ve also turned down some (Class) 7A and 8A schools that have made the state championship game in the last four or five years.

People have to schedule what gives them the best shot to get to five wins. Apparently, some people don’t view us as a sure win.

That’s part of this issue.”

Ryan said it’s frustrating teams don’t want to schedule the Spartans – who went 6-4 in 2015 and reached the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year.

The Cubs are the first team since the 1963 Cardinals to field an entire starting infield for an All-Star Game – first to have all four elected (Cards second baseman Stan Javier was an injury replacement for Pittsburgh’s Bill Mazeroski in ’63).

“It’s pretty impressive,” said Cubs manager Joe Maddon, who remembered that team as a 9-year-old Cardinals fan.

“As a kid back then, my God, I was blown away by it. Any 9-year-old right now that’s seeing this Cub infield go, I’d like to feel they felt exactly like I did.”

The Cubs nabbed five of the eight starting spots in fan balloting, with center fielder Dexter Fowler joining first baseman Anthony Rizzo (the NL’s top vote-getter), second baseman Ben Zobrist, shortstop Addison Russell and third baseman Kris Bryant.

Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta, the NL’s reigning Cy Young Award winner, earned his first All-Star selection, through the players’ ballot, and Cubs left-hander Jon Lester was selected by NL manager Terry Collins of the Mets.

“I think what it says is that we have an incredible fan-base engine right now. I mean, the Cubs’ fan base is huge,” said Zobrist, the first-year Cub and third-time All-Star.

No other NL team had more than one player voted into the lineup: Giants catcher Buster Posey Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper, and Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

The Cubs are the first team since the 1985 Padres with five starters – first to have five voted in since the 1976 Reds. The ’85 Padres starters included pitcher LaMarr Hoyt and injury replacement Terry Kennedy at catcher.

None of the Cubs four starting infielders finished first at his position on the players’ ballot.

But it doesn’t stop them from having a shot at getting all five infielders in the lineup, if Arrieta is selected for what could be a first-ever all-Chicago

starting pitching matchup.

Asked if Chicago deserves that matchup, Maddon said: “I don’t know if the city deserves it. I think the city would dig it.”

Sale would be the first Sox pitcher to start the game since Mark Buehrle in 2005. Arrieta would be the first Cubs pitcher since Claude Passeau in 1946.

“I think it’s up for grabs,” said Arrieta (10-3, 2.33 ERA), who has one more start Friday in Pittsburgh to make his case. “There’s several guys that could be deserving of the honor of starting, whether it’s me or not. It’d be great to start. It’d also be just great to pitch in the game and just be part of the three days in San Diego.”

Said Bryant: “Just having your teammates and your friends there will make it even more special. Probably the nerves won’t be there as much as last year, because when you look around, and it’ll look just like a normal game.”

CHICAGO – Joe Maddon could make light of his latest ejection, saying he got in a workout and snacked on some buttered raisin bread after he got tossed.

On a day when the Cubs lost again, their manager found at least a few positives.

John Lackey’s winless streak stretched to five starts, Maddon was ejected and the Cincinnati Reds beat struggling Cubs, 9-5, Tuesday behind Zack Cozart’s 13th home run.

Lackey (7-5) allowed six runs – five earned – six hits and five walks in six innings, dropping to 0-3 in his past five starts. The Cubs have lost five of their past six games and 10 of 15.

Maddon was ejected for the second time this season. David Ross was batting in the second, took a 3-0 pitch and started heading to first, only for plate umpire Jerry Meals to call a strike.

Maddon got tossed by Meals as he protested from the dugout, then came out for a spirited argument that lasted a few more minutes.

“It was pretty much the culmination of other calls that were going against us recently at the plate,” he said. “I think it kind of boiled over in that moment. I haven’t had a day off in a while.”

Cubs will have influence in home-field advantage

CHICAGO – If the Cubs actually get to the World Series this year, they should have nobody to blame but themselves if Game 1 isn’t at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs’ seven All-Star selections – including the entire National League starting infield – assures more say than anybody else over the game’s outcome, and the home-field advantage in the World Series that comes with a victory.

“Certainly, you think about it,” said All-Star second baseman Ben Zobrist, whose Royals used an electric atmosphere in Kansas City last fall to get a two-game jump on the Mets.

That included a 14-inning victory in Game 1 that featured a ninth-inning home run to tie and a walk-off sacrifice fly.

“You want that home-field advantage if you get there,” Zobrist said. “We had it in Kansas City last year, and it

was a big deal.”

If anything, Zobrist, like many players, thinks it’s too big a deal to attach to the outcome of a midseason exhibition game.

“I don’t love the fact that the AllStar Game decides that. I would rather have the whole regular-season decide that,” he said.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said he doesn’t mind the stakes but acknowledges it changes the way the game is managed.

“I had everything plotted before the game began, right down to who’s pitching in what inning,” he said. “You have this expanded roster to try to get everybody involved as much as you can but still retaining players for the extra-inning potential. All this stuff’s going on in your head.

“I don’t have any strong opinions one way or the other,” Maddon said.

“The only fact that I do like about it is that it makes the game actually more

competitive, and I think that sets our All-Star Game apart from like a Pro Bowl or an NBA All-Star Game.”

‘Scary’ collision won’t scare Bryant from OF: When Kris Bryant felt his knee

CHICAGO – Adam Eaton said he had no expectation of being named to the American League All-Star team, even though for those who value wins above replacement as a meaningful measurement of a player’s value, the right fielder ranks higher than anyone on the Sox. That includes Chris Sale, who was the only White Sox named Tuesday.

“Not good” is how Eaton, who took a .274 batting average with an AL-high seven triples, four homers, 27 RBIs, 41 runs and team-high nine stolen bases into the Sox game against the Yankees on Tuesday, sums up his first half.

“Offensively not good, not to what I expected, power-wise and average-wise.

I’m happy with my on-base percentage (.357), but the glamorous numbers aren’t that great. I hope I will be a second half player again this year.’’

Eaton hit to a .335/.418/.486 with eight homers and 38 RBI in the second half last season. Playing right field this year, Eaton’s Gold Glove-caliber defense has been second to none with a major league best 16 defensive runs saved and 11 outfield assists.

“Defensively I couldn’t ask for a better first half,’’ he said. “I think that’s what you can expect from me going forward in right field.’’

Eaton’s WAR is 3.5, which means he is worth 3.5 wins more than a replacement-level player. Sale’s is 3.3, Jose Quintana’s 2.9 and Todd Frazier 1.7.

Sale takes the fifth: Sale joined former great Billy Pierce as the only Sox pitcher to make the All-Star team in

five consecutive seasons. Pierce, also a left-hander, made the run from 1955’59.

Sale already has surpassed his win total of 13 last season and is only four wins shy of his career high 17 in 2012, his first season as a starting pitcher.

His 14 wins are the fourth-most in Sox history before the break and the most since knuckleballer Wilbur Wood, who often pitched on two days’ rest, won 16 in the first half in 1974.

Sale leads the majors in wins and is first in the AL in innings (120) and WHIP (0.98). His 2.93 ERA ranks third.

Sale, who has pitched in relief in three All-Star games and didn’t pitch at all in last year’s game, stands a good chance to be the starter, although AL manager Ned Yost said on ESPN’s AllStar selection show that he hasn’t decided yet.

“It’s just a nice little feather in your cap when you’re the guy that’s been tabbed, the guy that starts the game,’’ Sox manager Robin Ventura said, “so I hope he gets a chance to be that guy.

To me, he’s earned it. He deserves it, and I hope he enjoys it if he gets that chance.”

Frazier to defend Derby title: Former All-Star third baseman Todd Frazier didn’t make the team but he will defend his Home Run Derby title at Monday’s contest in San Diego.

“I don’t mind if Fraze does it,’’ Ventura said. “He enjoys doing it, he has the personality to handle it. Win or lose, whatever happens in that home run hitting contest isn’t going to change him. It’s not going to hurt or help his swing.’’

Fired Swoopes says she feels ‘vindicated’

pfinley@suntimes.com Despite being fired Sunday, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame player Sheryl Swoopes hinted Tuesday that Loyola’s 21/2-month investigation into allegations of her misconduct viewed the women’s basketball coach favorably.

If it did, her former bosses aren’t talking.

Loyola athletic director Steve Watson’s three-sentence statement Sunday night – slipped into the news cycle during a holiday weekend – made no mention of the investigation. It didn’t use the word “fired,” either, saying she simply was “no longer serving” as coach.

Watson refused comment through a spokesperson Tuesday after doing the same Sunday. He has yet to clarify whether Swoopes was fired for cause – the university conducted the investigation, not the athletic department – or even whether her assistants and staffers remain employed.

Swoopes, in her first statement since the firing, said Tuesday that she was happy with the investigation, which Loyola conducted with the help of the Dykema law firm.

“It’s my hope that the student-athletes will be provided a full explanation of what has unfolded,” Swoopes said. “As students, they deserve truth and transparency. All I can say at this point is that I do feel vindicated.

“I was 100 percent pleased with what I thought clearly supported all I’ve ever tried to provide as a coach, an employee and the woman of character my mother has raised.”

Swoopes, who did not expect the decision, said in the statement that she had been looking forward to welcoming eight of the Ramblers’ 12 players on campus Tuesday.

“I’m disappointed that I won’t have

given to America’s College Player of the year since 1937. Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Oct. 31, and the three finalists will be unveiled Nov. 21.

Former player Cate Soane said she was “humiliated” and “belittled” by coaches, making her “subject to a lot of inappropriate conduct” before she transferred after the 2013-14 season. The NCAA denied her request to waive the mandatory oneyear redshirt for transferring on those grounds.

The former WNBA great went 31-62 at Loyola, which hired her three years ago despite a coaching résumé that featured only an assistant stint at Mercer Island (Washington) High School.

The Ramblers are searching for her replacement at perhaps the worst possible time; an open recruiting period, critical for success, begins today.

Commissioner Adam Silver has said in the past that those changes were effective, but the influx of new money into the system this summer from the league’s new $24 billion TV contract, and Stephen Curry’s bargain contract that was negotiated when he was struggling with ankle injuries, conspired to give the Warriors enough wiggle room to spend $54 million on Durant.

The league and the players’ union can opt out of the current CBA this year, and both sides have been negotiating to try to avoid another work stoppage.

One of the biggest talking points Silver has been making in the past six months is the league’s continued push for more parity.

“The intention wasn’t that in this system that teams could sign, without going above the tax, that many max player contracts and that many All-Stars,” Silver said during All-Star weekend in Toronto.

“So if you ask me from a league standpoint, we would prefer that our All-Stars be distributed around the league rather than having so many AllStars in one market. But we’ll see what happens this summer.”

LONDON – In some ways, making it to a Grand Slam semifinal is rather beenthere, done-that for Venus Williams.

She is, after all, already the owner of seven major titles, including five at Wimbledon.

This one, however, is different.

She’s 36 now, a half-dozen years removed from her last such run. And, in the interim, she has been through the daily struggles of dealing with a disease that can sap energy and cause joint pain.

Williams made it to the final four at the All England Club for the first time since 2009, and at any Grand Slam tournament since the year after that, playing mistake-free to beat Yaroslava Shvedova, 7-6 (5), 6-2, in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

“Semifinals feels good. But it doesn’t feel foreign at all, let’s put it that way,” said Williams, whose first Wimbledon title came in 2000, and whose most recent came in 2008.

Asked to compare her current level of play with that of the past, Williams shook her head, shut her eyes and laughed.

“I don’t remember. Six years ago is ages ago,” she responded. “I was most likely kicking butt six years ago, if I was in the semis or the finals. You have to be.”

Just like in the old days, Williams will be joined in the semifinals by a familiar face – younger sister Serena, who moved closer to equaling Steffi Graf’s Open-era record of 22nd Grand Slam championships by defeating 21st-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-4, 6-4, taking the last three games of each set. Serena hit 11 aces, including one at 123 mph to end it.

This, then, is the latest chapter of the remarkable Williams sister tale: a pair of siblings from Compton, California, who rose to the top of tennis. It’s the 11th time they’ve reached the semis at the same major; in all previous 10, one took home the trophy. That includes four all-in-the-family finals at Wimbledon, with Venus winning in 2008, and Serena in 2002, 2003 and 2009.

Kevin Durant’s decision to join the Warriors on Monday sent tremors through the NBA, and players and executives throughout the league immediately started to contemplate how the newest super team would alter the landscape.

Wizards center Marcin Gortat tweeted. “(Are) they gonna score 200 points a game?”

The Warriors already were a super team before one of the league’s most unstoppable scorers decided to leave Oklahoma City for the Bay Area. Golden State won the championship in 2015, rolled to a regular-season record 73 victories last season and came within one game of back-to-back titles when they lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

Now they have added the player who nearly eliminated them a round earlier.

Although not everyone is anointing them next year’s champions.

“Everyone is so hyped up on the matchup problems on the offensive end? They still gotta come down the other end,” Pistons All-Star center Andre Drummond tweeted. “Not a very big team.”

When James left Cleveland for Miami, stars such as Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson were critical of the decision to join forces with players he had competed against.

“There’s no way, with hindsight, I would’ve ever called up Larry (Bird), called up Magic and said, ‘Hey, look, let’s get together and play on one team,’ ” Jordan said in 2010. “But that’s ... things are different. I can’t say that’s a bad thing. It’s an opportunity these kids have today. In all honesty, I was trying to beat those guys.”

Denver Nuggets forward Jusuf Nurkic was equally puzzled by Durant’s decision.

“Somebody beat you! And you go there... ?” Nurkic tweeted. “Superstar not doing that man.”

Although Durant never has been too concerned by outside opinions, his decision might also have ramifications on the NBA’s collective bargaining negotiations.

With a few easy steps, smoking your own ribs can be as simple as grilling them

wood chips, place soaked chips directly on charcoal, or in smoking box of gas grill.

Blot the ribs dry with paper towels. Brush the ribs lightly with the apple-cider vinegar over both the front and back of ribs. Set aside for 5 minutes. Sprinkle ribs liberally on both sides with rib rub and let sit, covered lightly, for 15 minutes.

Place ribs (bone side down) in the center of the cooking grate or in a rib holder/rack, making sure they are not over a direct flame.

Grill covered (at about 250 degrees F, if your grill has a thermometer) for about 3-3½ hours or until meat is tender and the rack bends easily but doesn’t break.

Leave ribs untended for the first 60 minutes – this means no peeking; very important when using wood chips. Check ribs after an hour and then every 30 minutes or so. If the ribs start to burn on the edges, stack them on top of one another in the very center of the grill and lower your fire/heat slightly.

Twenty minutes before serving, un-stack ribs, if necessary, and brush with barbecue sauce. You also can brush with a mixture of barbecue sauce and beer or apple cider – this becomes a “mop,” which is thinner than traditional barbecue sauce.

Remove ribs from grill and let rest 10 minutes before cutting into individual or 2-3 rib portions. Warm remaining sauce in a saucepan and serve on the side, if desired.

There was a year I demonstrated how to make ribs eight times on the same national morning show. Each time, I would remind them we did ribs the last time, and the producer would say, “I know, but everyone loves ribs!” And that is true.

The bonus: They’re easy to make – and easy to smoke – at home. You don’t need a smoker to smoke ribs. All you need is a grill, some soaked wood chips and great meaty ribs.

If you are like most people, and only cook baby back ribs, up your rib game and try St. Louis ribs, which are trimmed to remove the flap of meat on the underside of the breast bone and squared off to more easily fit on the grill. Spareribs are cut from the belly or side of the pig. They are longer and fattier than back ribs.

Once you decide on which rib to buy, there are a few things to remember. First, make sure each slab weighs at least 3 pounds and the ribs have a nice layer of meat covering the bone.

Slabs of ribs that are factory-cut often have “bone shine,” or areas of the rack where the blade hit the bone and cut off all the meat, exposing the bone.

Second, buy the highest quality, freshest product available. If you have a local butcher who cuts the meat, frequent his or her shop. If you don’t have a local butcher, go to a high-volume grocery store that rotates with fresh product every day. Be sure to look at the expiration date on the label and give your purchases the old-fashioned smell test. If it smells off, it is probably old. I prefer buying ribs that are cryovac-ed as they are generally the freshest choice.

In this recipe, I am cooking these ribs at a more traditional smoking temperature of 250 degrees F because every backyard griller wants to approximate the barbecue of the competition circuit at least once.

But more often, I smoke the ribs at a higher temperature of 300-325 degrees F. Both work well, but you get a crispier, more roasted flavor at the higher temperature as the fat renders out completely. It’s really a question of style and taste, as both are good.

I use soaked wood chips regardless of the temperature or the fuel.

Because the wood is the final flavoring element, it is as important as the quality of the meat and the rub.

make a smoker box out of heavy-duty aluminum foil and fill it with wet wood chips as the gas grill preheats with all burners on high. The chips will start to smoke and smolder and will continue even as you reduce the heat to a medium-low indirect heat.

Make sure to place the chips in the upper-left hand corner of the grill under the cooking grates. If you place the chips on the cooking grates, they are so far from the heat element they won’t smoke.

Also, wet the chips so they will smoke and not erupt into flames. On a charcoal grill, simply toss a handful of wet wood chips on both sides of the gray-ashed charcoal when you put the ribs on the grill.

And, don’t forget, ribs can only be smoked using indirect heat.

The final thing to know is the best way to test for doneness is to make sure the meat has receded from the

end of the bones. You should be able to bend the rack without breaking it in pieces. The best ribs should be tender but have a little chew left.

Gas Grill Smoked Ribs

For a smoother rub, grind the ingredients in a spice grinder until well combined and all the pieces are uniform (the rub will become a very fine powder and tan in color). It can be stored in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

The Washington Post For many years, I owned an offset smoker, and as a hard-core barbecue enthusiast I insisted on it as an absolute necessity for low-and-slow cooking. Having a firebox to the side, not under, the meats means you can more easily keep the heat gentle – and replace coals and wood as needed.

Then a couple of years ago, I gave it to a neighbor. It was still usable, but I’d grown weary of its frailties, its leakiness and its creeping Soviet-like empire-building rust. I had intended to replace it with a much better one, but after a road trip to various custom smoker manufacturers, I returned home mired in indecision. Meanwhile, I found myself doing more and more of those big smokes, such as ribs, beef brisket and pork shoulder, on my simple 22-inch Weber kettle instead.

These days, I cook nearly everything on it. And I use almost nothing else. Very little gadgetry. Few accessories. That’s because I know that the key to good barbecue is fire management and that has very little to do with the equipment.

I do use a hinged cooking grate, because it makes adding charcoal and wood to an existing fire easy. On rare occasions, I set up a rotisserie. And of course I employ a grill pan, long-handled tongs and a good pair of gloves.

If I wanted to, I could buy all sorts of items, including special heavy-duty searing grates, rib grates and entire barbecue “systems,” which, as it happens, encourage you to buy yet more stuff. But the more I barbecue, the less equipment I seem to need.

Kettles have long been frowned upon by the ’cue-noscenti as little more than the workhorse of holiday burgers and wieners and the occasional birthday steak. But they can do so much more once you know how to set them up.

The first step is imagining what you’d like to do. Think of the kettle as both stove top and oven. You want to cook something quickly, you can. You want to roast something over time, you can do that as well. We’re not just talking meat, either. Think vegetables and fruit, too.

Don’t get me wrong: As much as I like it, there are downsides to using a kettle for everything. One, volume.

You can can’t fit as much food on a kettle as you can an offset or even a bullet smoker. Two, level of stress.

specifically for low-and-slow cooking, allows you to feed the fire more easily if needed and will generally turn out more consistent results.

Still, there’s something appealing, in a minimalistic sort of way, about an all-in-one piece of gear, and when you know how to manage the fire, your kettle can be exactly that. Here are some techniques for varying the placement of coals, wood and more to get the most out of it.

Direct fire

The old-school style of cooking, hot and fast. Distribute the charcoal in a layer across the entire bottom of the grill.

Pros: Great for cooking a lot of quick-grilling items, such as those burgers and wieners for that birthday party. It’s the preferred method for searing, as well. Thick, firm items, such as pineapple slices, take well to this method. So do sliced vegetables, such as eggplant, onions and zucchini, which when dressed in olive oil, vinegar and herbs make for a fantastic antipasto.

Cons: You have to be super-organized, because the food is going on and coming off pretty fast. You have nowhere to put items that may need more cooking, but less heat.

Tips: When the fire is hot, you can sear meat and get terrific grill marks on vegetables, fruit and some denser fish, like swordfish. It also does wonders for opening the shells of oysters, mussels and clams. A medium fire allows you to thoroughly cook such semi-dense foods as mangoes

and salmon and, yes, even burgers (although you won’t get the char you may seek).

Indirect fire

The standard-bearer of the modern grillmeister. Distribute coals on one side and leave the other side empty.

Pros: Allows maximum flexibility to grill and yet, by moving the food over to the cool side, you can cook it all the way through with control, or even smoke it. Excellent for thicker steaks, when you want a good char but you also seek a medium-rare or medium piece of meat. Good, really, for anything that you want charred, then smoked.

Con: Reduces the actual cooking area by about half.

Tips: To add smoke, distribute some wood chips or wood chunks onto the coals. Allow to catch, then put the lid on, with the top vents open anywhere from a sliver (for a very low but dense smoke) to about half (for a quicker, lighter smoke).

Three-zone fire

This is unconventional and not as useful as a basic indirect method, but fun to experiment with. After the coals are ready, distribute a large pile of them on one side, slope a smaller pile next to it, and leave the last third of the grill empty.

Pros: Allows you to sear, cook and smoke. It also lets you cook over different temperatures at the same time.

Say, sear a steak over the hot coals and grill fruit over the medium-hot coals.

For cooking at low temperature for a long time, a.k.a. low-and-slow. Distribute the charcoal in a ring around the perimeter of the kettle, about three coals wide. Add another layer of coals on top. Top with wood chunks every few inches.

Pros: The fire will burn from six to 10 hours, or even more, depending on the depth and length of the charcoal ring. Ideal for big meats, such as ribs and pork butt. What some consider the summit of barbecue, brisket, comes out incredibly juicy, with a nice crusty exterior.

Con: The entire grill is pretty much devoted to that one item.

Tips: Check the fire about four hours into your cook. There should be spent coals approximately two-thirds of the way around. If you feel you need to add coals to get to the number of desired hours, do so sparingly, only about six coals. You may not need to add any, but if you do, you’ll almost certainly need to add only one time.

Be careful not to add too many during the cook because you can cause the edges of the meat to sizzle and burn.

Rotisserie

For even cooking of substantial meats that will cook for an hour or two. An electric rotisserie (about $150) fits perfectly inside a 22-inch Weber kettle. The coals should be distributed on both sides of the meat, and the space directly beneath the meat should be filled with an aluminum foil drip pan.

Pros: Great for roasts and whole chickens. A nice crust forms on the roast, and the skin on the chicken crisps up beautifully. Also, rotisserie cooking is effortless. Set it and forget it.

Cons: You must have an electrical outlet handy. It is a minor hassle to set up and, afterward, clean.

Tips: Place some vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots and onions, beneath the meat to flavor them with the drippings.

NSLS chapter inducts new members at KC DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee College chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success held an induction ceremony on April 29 on campus.

The mission of NSLS is to help students discover and achieve their goals.

The society, founded by Gary Tuerack, emphasizes the six steps of leadership: clarification of purpose, creation of a shared vision, challenge of the status quo, inspiration of positive action, empowerment of others, and continuous improvement. The society was founded in 2001 and current has about 500,000 members at 478 colleges across the United States.

The NSLS chapter at Kishwaukee College was established in fall 2014.

The chapter adviser is Allison Von Ende.

The inductees enjoyed a luncheon ceremony with a keynote address given by Charles Knippen, the NSLS national president.

New officers for the 2016-17 academic year were installed. Losing weight in the belly seems a logical way to improve not only sleep but also overall health. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to target weight loss to the belly alone. But generally, if you lose weight, some of this will come from belly fat.

The answer to losing weight, improving sleep and losing belly fat winds up being overall weight loss through good old-fashioned exercise and a healthy diet. Take it slowly. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity (such as swimming or brisk walking) each week. You don’t have to do five 30-minute workouts. More frequent but shorter exercise sessions, such as three 10-minute brisk walks instead of one 30-minute walk, will have the same impact.

You also need to cut back on calories.

The lasting effects of combining exercise and weight loss will go far beyond improving your night’s sleep and well into a healthy future.

I once encouraged a patient to join a group program for losing weight. I explained to her all of the health benefits of losing weight – the lower risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, breast and several other forms of cancer. She was dubious.

After she lost 25 pounds, she told me: “I’m still not convinced this is good for my health. But I finally like the way I look.

Plus, I’m sleeping like a baby.”

Dear Dr. K: I’m overweight. My doctor told me, among other things, losing weight would help me sleep better. What’s the connection?

Dear Reader: It’s true. Losing weight, especially in your belly, improves the quality of sleep if you are overweight or obese.

A number of studies have shown this to be true. In one study, researchers followed people who lost an average of 15 pounds over six months. About 15 percent of the weight loss was in their bellies. The weight loss was associated with improved sleep quality.

What’s the connection? For one thing, excess body weight, especially in the neck, increases the likelihood of developing obstructive sleep apnea. This condition occurs when your airway becomes blocked, either completely or partially, while you sleep. It causes you to stop breathing, sometimes hundreds of times a night. Not surprisingly, sleep apnea disrupts your sleep.

It also puts you at risk for other conditions, including stroke and high blood pressure.

So, one possibility is weight loss reduces the risk of sleep apnea and improves sleep quality.

Another likely reason weight loss leads to improved sleep is linked to diabetes.

Weight loss reduces your risk of getting diabetes. And diabetes increases your risk of getting restless leg syndrome, which disrupts your sleep. Weight reduction also might reduce the frequency of those sleep disorders, thereby improving sleep quality.

We don’t yet know why losing belly fat in particular is associated with improved sleep. We do know, however, certain belly fat, called visceral fat, is associated with heart disease, dementia, breast and colon cancers and asthma. Probably, this is because belly fat cells produce hormones that

That is true if a teacher or columnist analyzes his work. A good educator or writer should be his own harshest critic.

So far, this week’s deals have featured two possible finesses, and the decision was which, if either, to take. Here is another. South is in four spades. After West leads the club king to dummy’s ace, what should declarer do?

South has a minimum two-club opening bid, but opposite a 3-3-3-4 Yarborough, he could win nine tricks.

North, with an ace, is right to raise to three spades, not give a double negative.

Declarer has four potential losers: one spade, two hearts and one diamond. He is in the dummy for the last time and should take a major-suit finesse, but which one?

If the chosen finesse loses, the contract will probably be impossible to make. But suppose it wins -- then what? If South takes a successful trump finesse, he can cash the spade ace. If the king drops, fine; if not, though, he will surely lose those four tricks. The chance of king-singleton or king-doubleton in hearts is low (a priori, just under 10 percent). However, what happens if declarer takes a winning heart finesse?

He can continue with the spade ace and spade queen, and surely take 10 tricks: five spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club. So, strange though it might feel, it is right to finesse in the shorter and weaker suit.
