Hoping Cubs can follow Cavs to break curse, maybe

My late father brainwashed me when I was young.

I’ve told that jokingly – nostalgically – to countless people over the years after they’ve said they were sorry when learning I was a fan of Cleveland’s professional sports teams.

Growing up on Lake Erie about 20 miles east of the Ohio border, he was a die-hard fan of the Browns, the Indians and the Cavaliers.

And so I became one, too.

Over the years, Dad and I were company to many heartbreaking Cleveland sports moments until he passed away in 2007. It was a special bond I share with nobody else.

There was Red Right 88.

The Drive.

The Fumble.

The Shot.

The Blown Save.

The Decision.

These are monikers that might be foreign to many, but ask any Cleveland fan about any of them and they’ll be able to tell you where they were, who they were with, and how heartbreaking each was.

Before the Super Bowl era even began, the Cleveland Browns won the 1964 NFL title. The Browns, Indians and Cavaliers (as well as the long-gone Barons of the NHL) then went 147 consecutive seasons without another.

THE SWISS ARMY BATTLES ITS LATEST FOE: BEDBUGS IN DORMS

GENEVA – The Swiss army is working hard to fend off its latest foe: bedbugs.

The defense department said Monday that a parents’ day event planned for July 16 is being canceled because bedbugs have appeared in dormitories and fabrics used by three companies at an infantry training school in several parts of French-speaking Switzerland.

Last month, LeBron James and the Cavs changed all that.

I was in a hotel room on my way to a family vacation in Disney World (the reason why it’s taken me so long to write this) when the Cavs beat Golden State in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to end the 147-season streak.

My first thought was of Dad and how happy he would have been. I wish we could have celebrated together.

I’m not a Cubs fan, but largely because of my experience as a Cleveland sports fan, I can relate to their fandom’s misery. It’s been 108 seasons since the Cubs won a World Series.

That’s too long.

So I’ve decided to root for the Cubs this year. Unless, of course, they face the Indians in the World Series. Now that would be something.

INDEPENDENCE DAY DeKalb celebrates July 4th at Hopkins Park

news@daily-chronicle.com For 43 years, Don Clayberg has been celebrating the Fourth of July at DeKalb’s Hopkins Park playing games, grilling food and enjoying friends and family.

The Sycamore resident loves the annual tradition that brings families from all over DeKalb County together to celebrate the holiday with food, fun and fireworks.

“We really have fun. I like all the people here,” Clayberg said. “We get here at 7 a.m. to get our spot. It’s the same spot every year and it’s the best spot in the park. It has shade and a perfect view for the fireworks.

“We’ve had groups of 40 to 50 people, but this year, there are about 25 of us here.”

The smell of burgers and brats was in the air at Hopkins as hundreds of people gathered to enjoy the afternoon that culminated with a performance by the DeKalb Municipal Band and accompanying fireworks show.

Scott deOliveira, marketing and community manager for the DeKalb Park District, which sponsors the event, said the band and fireworks show is a long-standing DeKalb tradition for many families.

“It’s a great park to celebrate a holiday, and just a fun day for everybody. Hopkins is a great backdrop for music and fireworks,” he said.

New to the event was a flyover by a B-17 airplane just before the fireworks show began. The vintage plane, which is one of only a few left in America, is temporarily being housed at DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport. Also making its debut this year was a 5K run, which began and ended at Hopkins.

Rachel Schmit, recreation supervisor for the DeKalb Park District, said she was surprised at how many people participated in the early-morning run. She said about 60 to 70 people ran in the race.

“It was the coolest thing – we had so many families running together.

Some people ran holding the American flag,”she said. “It’s just been an excellent day. I love watching families come together to set up picnics and seeing all the kids playing in the park.”

“We have brats, burgers, baked beans, potato salad and Texas cake,”he said with a laugh. “It’s just a good time. I enjoy the music and the fireworks.”

Julie Sgarlata, 55, of Sycamore has been enjoying the holiday at Hopkins since she was 12 years old. She said that while things have changed throughout the years, she still has fun with her family and friends.

“When I first started coming, there were a lot of activities in the park and it was very exciting,” she said. “I miss that. Since they dropped the entertainment, I haven’t felt the connection that I used to, but it’s still the best park in town.”

Ashley Perkins, 30, was busy grilling ribs and chicken while her children played in the park. This is

only the second time she’s come to Hopkins for the holiday, but said she loves it.

“I’m originally from Minnesota, and there’s a park just like this at home with all the hills and trees,” she said. “I’ve been here since 9 a.m., because we wanted to get a good spot.

I like all the vendors, the band and, of course, the fireworks, while the kids like the park and pool.”

The Melendez family came all the way from Plano to celebrate.

Vanessa Melendez, 19, said her entire family has been coming to Hopkins for about five years to enjoy the holiday.

“We come because of the park and pool. This is the one time the entire family comes together,” she said.

“There are about 30 of us here. We brought the volleyball net and we also play soccer and football. It’s a great time.”

Boy Scouts from Troop 33 in DeKalb were getting ready to sell hot

dogs and hamburgers, which is something the troop has done for more than 20 years.

All the money the Scouts earn helps pay for troop activities.

Reilly Farrell, 12, was working at the booth. The seventh-grader at St. Mary’s in DeKalb said he’s been coming to Hopkins for many years.

“I like the fireworks the best because they’re loud and they look cool,” he said.

For Pat Deiss and her family, the holiday gathering is a bittersweet celebration. Her mother’s birthday is July 4, and the DeKalb resident remembers her late mother by spending the day with family at Hopkins Park.

“This is a perfect place. Everyone is so nice and friendly,” she said.

“Families can come here and feel safe. I love the band, they sound great.

“The fireworks are great. The whole thing is very Americana.”

Creative fundraisers planned to help renovate former Finnish hall

DeKALB – Diane Rodgers believes in love at first sight. She first saw the Majakka Finnish Temperance Hall by accident, while taking a walk in the area in 2011, and she immediately fell in love with the building.

Rodgers said that after she discovered the old building at 1021 State St. in DeKalb, she wanted to know how she could restore the hall to its former glory.

Rodgers is the founder of the DeKalb Finnish Social History Project, which aims to document Finnish history in DeKalb and to historically preserve and restore the Majakka Finnish Temperance Hall, now the DeKalb Area Women’s Center.

Rodgers also is a sociology professor at Northern Illinois University.

As part of the DeKalb Finnish Social History Project, Rodgers and her students have interviewed local people of Finnish descent and helped them research their ancestry.

She said the community “has been amazingly helpful in assisting us with understanding the complex history of the Finnish and other immigrants in DeKalb.”

Rodgers has written and received grants from Landmarks Illinois and DeKalb County Community Foundation for past restoration funding.

Individual donors and groups, including Finlandia Foundation Midwest Chapter, also have contributed to restoration efforts on the building. It’s name “Majakka” means “lighthouse” in Finnish.

Rodgers is now organizing fundraisers specifically for window restoration on the front of the building.

About $34,000 is needed to historically repair and restore the building’s front windows with storm windows that adhere to preservation criteria. The large set of windows on the side of the building will cost about $60,000. The building’s original cedar siding also needs to be scraped and painted by a company experienced in working with historic buildings.

“Although the building needs two large restoration tasks, these improvements will make a big difference and last a very long time,” Rodgers said. “With some cosmetic touches

THE BUILDING’S HISTORY

The Majakka Finnish Temperance Hall’s cornerstone was laid in 1917, and the building, built by Finnish workers, was completed and dedicated in 1918.

The building was used by the Majakka Temperance Society for activities such as meetings, plays, dances, band and choir performances and gymnastics. The temperance society also sponsored a lending library in the hall’s balcony and a cafeteria for workers of nearby factories in the basement.

Delores (Bonnie) Magee Lee Blank, 77, of Monroe Center, passed away July 1, 2016, at her home after battling thyroid cancer.

She was born Aug. 20, 1938, in Belvidere, to Clarence and Marie (Moberg) Magee. She married Doyle Lee in Genoa on Sept. 28, 1956. He passed away in February 1979.

They had four children. She married David Blank, in Genoa, on Oct. 18, 1980. He also had four children.

They lived in Kingston for many years before moving to Monroe Center in 1995.

Delores graduated from Genoa-Kingston High School in 1956.

She worked briefly for the U.S. post office and GTE Automatic. She baby-sat in her home for 15 years for many neighborhood children, watching as many as 13 kids at one time. Delores also worked in the Genoa-Kingston school cafeterias for 13 years serving some of the same kids she baby-sat.

She was a selfless person, always caring for others.

She enjoyed cooking and especially, baking and decorating cookies for her grandkids. She also loved reading and doing crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her husband, David

“One of the items I have led Abingdon-Avon through is consolidation, so I think when you talk to various individuals in the community, they will tell you it went very, very well,” Willis said. “I look forward to, hopefully, having that kind of transition here.”

He added: “As superintendent of Indian Creek School District, I’ll make decisions in the best interests of kids, try to be conservative with our finances and, hopefully, we’ll build our curriculum so that way we’ll be a destination district, just like we currently are, in the area.”

Board President Vaughn Boehne said that the board selected Willis because of his ideas for the district and his financial acumen.

“The entire Indian Creek school board thinks that Chad Willis has excellent financial skills and technology ideas for our district,” Boehne said in a statement. “These would help our district remain as financially strong as we are and move into the future with more focus on technology for our students while using our technology to become more user friendly to the public.”

SHABBONA – Indian Creek School District 425’s new superintendent plans to make communication a priority as he takes the helm of the school district that serves 750 students in the southwest corner of DeKalb County.

Chad Willis, 43, replaces outgoing Superintendent Pamela Rockwood.

Rockwood, who led the district for a decade, is leaving to take an assistant professor job at Texas A&M University.

Willis left his position as superintendent at the larger Abingdon-Avon School District 276 near Galesburg to take the Indian Creek job. Although, Indian Creek has about 250 fewer students than Abingdon-Avon, Willis said it was an opportunity that he couldn’t pass up.

“This is a phenomenal opportunity for us and we feel it’s a great move professionally and personally,” Willis said.

Willis said he plans to move to Shabbona with his wife, Jolene, and two children, Everett and Isaac.

Willis interviewed with the Indian Creek school board twice before its members voted 7-0 to hire him.

In Abingdon-Avon, Willis had total compensation of almost $142,000 in the 2015-16 school year, according to that district’s website. He said he would be paid a base salary of $130,000 under terms of a four-year contract, with includes retirement benefits and family insurance.

Even before he began in his new position, Willis said he had prepared a transition Chad Willis plan for the District 425 board. One priority will New D-425 superintendent be learning about the community and getting to know the people in it.

“One of my goals will be to meet with the community and get to know them, what they see as strengths of the district and areas they’d like to improve upon,” Willis said.

HAZEL CREST – The police chief of a Chicago suburb where a man and his two daughters were killed Saturday in their home called the act “pure evil” and urged anyone with information to share it with investigators.

Authorities have not identified any suspects in the shootings in Hazel Crest, but Police Chief Mitchell Davis said it was a “targeted event.”

“Anyone who could kill a 3-year-old and a 10-year-old, that’s pure evil as far as I’m concerned,” Davis said at a news conference Sunday.

Illinois market vendor removes Nazi flag after complaints

ST. CHARLES – A vendor at a suburban Chicago flea market has removed a Nazi flag that had been for sale after complaints.

The Daily Herald reported that a picture of the display at the Kane County Flea Market in St. Charles was shared hundreds of times on social media Sunday and generated criticism.

Ben Robinson, a member of the family that owns the flea market, said the vendor was “more than happy to take it down.”

Robinson says the man has been a vendor for about 30 years and typically sells furniture and household items.

Robinson said the vendor was not making a political statement and did not intend to cause offense.

Practice surgeries go virtual at Chicago medical center

CHICAGO – Rush University Medical Center in Chicago is adopting virtual reality technology to train its obstetrics and gynecology residents in surgical techniques.

The technology will allow Rush to do away with practice operations on pigs, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. As a result, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals agreed to cover half of the $12,000 cost of the training module.

The system will allow the 24 residents to practice using a joystick or surgical tools while they see a virtual patient through a screen. Students will practice common procedures on the uterus, ovaries and Fallopian tubes.

2 Chicago officers hurt by firecracker thrown at squad car

CHICAGO – Chicago police said they were looking for a suspect after two officers were injured when someone threw a firecracker at their squad car.

Local media report the incident happened around 4:20 p.m. Sunday in the city’s South Shore neighborhood.

Police said the officers were on patrol when another vehicle pulled alongside them, someone threw the firecracker toward their squad car and it exploded.

The officers were taken to a hospital in good condition with injuries that weren’t life-threatening.

Report: Improve control of Chicago settlement costs

CHICAGO – A city watchdog report said the Chicago government lacks a centralized program to keep down the hundreds of millions of dollars it pays out each year for things such as police misconduct cases and workers’ compensation claims.

Inspector General Joseph Ferguson estimated that Chicago paid $457.8 million in claims in 2013 and 2014, including $203.1 million for workers’ compensation and $146.3 million for police misconduct and other public safety claims, The Chicago Tribune reports.

Ferguson called for changes in a letter to Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s chief of staff, Eileen Mitchell. Ferguson said the city should implement standards to identify and evaluate risk by tracking the frequency and costs of different types of claims. City workers then could be trained to avoid those issues.

Mitchell responded by pledg-

ing to create a working group with representatives of various departments to look into how to address the situation.

The administration said police misconduct will be excluded from the working group’s responsibilities because of an ongoing federal investigation of the Chicago Police Department and the city’s attempts to implement recommendations from Emanuel’s Police Accountability Task Force.

State Finance Department spokeswoman Molly Poppe said Thursday that the city already tries to manage risk, but that the city agrees there could be benefits to ensuring risk management functions are coordinated across departments.

“Going forward, a working group comprised of departmental leaders will allow us to identify areas for improved coordination of risk management procedures citywide, further supplementing current work in departments such as employee training and safety initiatives, proactive evaluation of claims, infrastructure planning, and insurance management,” Poppe said.

With few political allies, Trump planning a celebrity convention

CLEVELAND – Donald Trump’s team promises an extraordinary display of political entertainment at this month’s Republican National Convention, with the accent on entertainment.

The former reality television star plans to feature his high-profile children at the summer gathering in Cleveland, with the hope they’ll be joined by a number of celebrity supporters. Prospects include former Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and longtime boxing promoter Don King.

“I’m going to be involved, definitely,” said King, who lives in Cleveland and is a passionate supporter of the presumptive Republican nominee. “He’s my man. I love him. He’s going to be the next president.”

While those bold-face names have yet to be confirmed, the fact they’re on Trump’s list is a reminder that many of the Republican Party’s biggest stars aren’t willing to appear on his behalf. The GOP’s two living presidents, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, its most recent presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, and Ohio’s Republican governor, John Kasich, all plan to avoid the four-day event that traditionally serves as a powerful display of party unity heading into the sprint toward Election Day. “He’s going to have to bring all his skills to bear to make this work, not just in Cleveland, but for the next four months,” said Matt Borges, the Ohio Republican Party chairman. “It won’t be easy, but that’s what he’s got to do.”

Clinton’s speaking program, too, isn’t without its uncomfortable riddles. There’s no public sense yet of what role she’ll give to Bernie Sanders, the Vermont senator whose surprisingly strong challenge in the Democratic primary has yet to officially come to an end.

Sanders says he’ll vote for Clinton, but he’s yet to formally endorse her and is pushing for changes to the Democratic platform.

Paw Lickin’ Good will celebrate its 10th anniversary with its annual PawFest – a joint fundraiser between the pet supply store, TAILS Humane Society and Raven’s Husky Haven and Rescue. Paws aren’t the only thing the visiting rescues will be licking – Paw Lickin’ Good owner Jody Meerdink has arranged to set up a kissing booth, where donors can give $1 for a puppy-breath kiss.

“It literally is a kissing booth and we use a dog. You pay about $1 and get a smooch from a dog,” Meerdink said.

“We’ve got several different dogs that do very well in the kissing booth.”

The shop tested the booth on Valentine’s Day, and earned more than $100, she said.

The Sycamore Chamber Ambassadors helped the new owners of Dairy Ripple celebrate the grand opening of the business at 675 E. State St. in Sycamore. The restaurant has transitioned into the care of three local families: the Gilkeys, the Herras and the Janeceks.

With the Fourth of July behind us, we’re now in the middle of summer activities. Baseball and softball will be wrapping up soon for local leagues, the pools are getting plenty of use and camp routines are in full effect. For some of you, it might mean that it’s time to take a vacation but for others it might just be a shift to the next thing as it is in my household.

Because we’re in the state of Illinois, it’s on to the start of more confusion about the budget. We now have another stopgap spending deal. I remember when we used to have an annual budget, but that appears to be the old-school way of doing things.

As we look at the month of July locally, there are plenty of things to keep you busy if you are one of those people that either doesn’t know what is going on or just can’t sit still without attending as much as possible. Farmers markets are held on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Kish Fest is coming later in the month, DeKalb Park District has lots of fun things to do and the chamber is full of events as well.

Later this month, on July 27, the DeKalb Chamber will host the 2016 State of the City event at Faranda’s Banquet & Conference Center beginning at 8 a.m. This includes a full breakfast and a report from DeKalb Mayor John Rey, City Manager Anne Marie Gaura and Northern Illinois University President Doug Baker. This seventh annual event is a great chance to hear an overview of the 2015-16 fiscal year and a look ahead at the upcoming 16.5 fiscal year too.

Staff raises as deficits grow

The budget calls for another year of deficit spending at Sycamore-based School District 427.

After years of drawing down its reserves, last year the district sold $2.9 million worth of tax anticipation warrants – basically a loan they take out using future tax receipts as collateral. These warrants are often a sign of a school district in distress, and at the least, they cause public funds to be spent on interest, rather than education.

This year, the budget will include a deficit of about $2.5 million, which district officials say likely means more borrowing, and more interest payments.

Credit school board members and administrators for confronting this challenge.

They’re actively trying to stem the tide of red ink and are in the midst of a plan to cut $3.8 million in spending over three years, a plan that includes 56 layoffs districtwide.

But the school district also is saddled with a union pay scale that prescribes raises teachers based on education and years of service – and having little to do with performance.

It’s standard at public schools in Illinois.

Here, give the teachers credit for agreeing to a salary freeze in the first year of their contract. In the second through fourth years, however, they make up for it. Take for example a teacher who was on step 10 in the master’s degree lane in the 2014-15 school year.

That year, their compensation including the district’s contribution to their pension would have been $58,058, documents show.

In the upcoming school year, compensation for the same teacher, who is now on Step 12 in the pay scale, will be $64,391.

In two years, their compensation will have increased 11 percent, well outpacing the rate of inflation. Meanwhile, the school district’s budget deficit was in the millions in each of those years.

We truly appreciate the work of teachers. However, most people who do not work for government would never expect their pay to continue to steadily and reliably increase while their employer struggled financially and co-workers were laid off.

If teacher pay were tied less to seniority and more to merit and financial realities, some of the problems we have paying for education could be avoided.

No bombshells from GOP in Benghazi probe The long-awaited report by House Republicans on Benghazi released last Tuesday packed all the explosive punch of a 5-cent firecracker.

Yes, it found a series of failings by the national security bureaucracy, but here’s what else it did: Cleared former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of the absurd accusation that she somehow knew about the attack on the diplomatic compound in Libya before it happened and did nothing about it.

The GOP-led committee’s desire to find evidence of malfeasance by Clinton to support all the conspiracy theories surrounding Benghazi went unfulfilled. Had there been real facts to support it, surely this committee would have found it. After all, that was the panel’s real mission, despite the talk of concern about national security.

Instead, the minutely detailed, 800-page document produced by the committee assigned blame far beyond Secretary Clinton’s State Department. As the McClatchy news story declared, “Actions of the Pentagon, FBI and intelligence community were also critiqued.”

But we already knew that from the eight investigations that preceded

this politically inspired probe. The report – a product of the longest congressional investigation in memory on possible wrongdoing in the executive branch, longer than Watergate or 9/11 – went a bit further and deeper than the earlier ones, but the general outline was already known.

The primary finding is that Washington officials, confronted by the fact that something terrible was happening in Benghazi, engaged in a lot of dithering instead of the immediate reaction that could have saved lives.

That produced a policy disaster that tarnishes everyone connected to it.

That is genuinely scandalous, and it should never have happened. But again, Washington’s failure became evident in the weeks immediately after the 2012 attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three American colleagues: Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods.

It shouldn’t have taken yet another investigation to tell the American public what it had already been told.

Also evident, by the way – although congressional Republicans have been loath to admit it – is that legislators failed to appropriate funding for security at U.S. diplomatic posts around the world at the level

the State Department had asked for earlier. That was a critical element of the Benghazi debacle for which Congress is wholly to blame.

In terms of the big picture, there were no startling new revelations, no bombshells. But then, that was probably never the intent. The purpose all along was clearly to prolong the controversy in the hope of finding something – anything – that would produce embarrassing headlines for former Secretary of State Clinton just before her expected nomination as the Democratic candidate for president.

In that regard, the committee can take some credit for unearthing one political dustup that is still ongoing, Ms. Clinton’s email scandal, but that hardly rises to a level that justifies the panel’s alleged public policy purpose. Nor is it likely to affect the outcome of the presidential election.

Is there some lesson here for the future? Only one that we’ve heard before: Congress should never use its investigative power for political purposes. It discredits the investigative process, discredits the members who take part in it and discredits Congress itself.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Brexit due to failure of elites, not bigotry of masses Bigotry! Nativism! Racism! That’s what elites in Britain, Europe and here have been howling, explanations for why 52 percent of a higher-than-general-election turnout of British voters voted for their nation to leave the European Union.

But there is plenty of bigotry, condescension and snobbery in the accusations and the people making them. And it’s incoherent to claim, as some do, that it’s undemocratic for voters to decide.

That amounts to saying that ordinary people should be content to be ruled by their betters.

It’s true that college graduates tended to vote “Remain” and less-educated people of England and Wales tended to vote “Leave.” Both the posh precincts and immigrant quarters of Inner London voted 70-plus percent “Remain,” as did Oxford and Cambridge. But the rest of England and Wales, including Labour factory towns and Conservative countryside, voted 55 percent “Leave.”

They did so despite major party leaders, the Bank of England and London financiers and CEOs telling them that “Leave” would cost them money. Financial markets (which, like the betting markets, underestimated the “Leave” vote) fell sharply at first, and Britain’s robust economic growth may stall.

But “Leave” voters may have remembered that many elite experts predicted that the euro would be a great success.

Especially since voters often value some things more than money. Lord Ashcroft’s post-Brexit poll found that most “Leavers” were motivated by “the principle that decisions about the UK should be taken in the UK.” Concerns about immigration came in a fairly distant second.

This should not be unfamiliar to Americans. The Founding Fathers pledged their fortunes as well as their lives and sacred honor in declaring independence, and economists Peter Lindert and Jeffrey Williamson conclude that American incomes fell more than 20 percent between 1774 and the 1790s, when Alexander Hamilton’s financial system kicked in. That’s much worse than anything in the last century.

Thomas Frank, author of “What’s the Matter With Kansas?”, accused modest-income conservatives of behaving irrationally for voting against candidates who promised more benefits because of their liberal cultural stands.

But for them, like the author’s gentry liberal friends who vote for cultural

liberals who would raise their taxes, some things are more important than short-term economic gain.

For instance, nationalism. To many, not just elites, this has a nasty sound: It sounds like Nazism. But there’s also a healthy nationalism, a belief in one’s country and the good things in its heritage and a willingness to defend them if attacked.

Winston Churchill was such a nationalist, in that “finest hour” when Britain stood alone against Hitler.

Franklin Roosevelt was a nationalist, too. The biggest applause to his speech to Congress the day after Pearl Harbor was when he said, “the American people” – not the government, not the military, but the people – “in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.” And 45 months later, they did.

Each nationalism is different, drawing on countries’ histories, traditions, mores. In vetoing Britain’s application to the Common Market in 1963, Charles de Gaulle (who had lived in England and spoke English) said that Britain had “in all her doings very marked and very original habits and traditions.”

England with its common law allowed what was not regulated; Continental Europe with its Napoleonic Code allowed nothing until it was regulated.

They always were a bad fit.

Nationalism sits ill with transnational elites confident that the “arc of history,” as Barack Obama says, bends

toward greater submergence of national identities to international control: Centralizing power in the hands of well-educated liberal-minded experts is the wave of the future.

But this is a 20th century, and increasingly obsolete, view. In the industrial age, with its massive factories and masses of workers, centralization seemed inevitable and beneficial. In the information age, when your small phone contains more information than a Carnegie library and performs more functions than a Cold War UNIVAC, centralization blocks creative innovation and adaptive flexibility.

Transnational institutions have plainly failed to inspire the fellow feeling and genuine enthusiasm that nations inspire in most people. The EU long since achieved its initial purpose of preventing another European war.

But even with an anthem by Beethoven it has failed to match the feelings of passionate attachment symbolized by the Union Jack or the French tricolor.

The elites’ howls of bigotry and racism aren’t accurate descriptions of those who failed to follow their lead. They’re laments of their own failure to persuade them to do so.

Illinoisans revolt against nation’s highest property taxes

Illinois News Network Bob’s Countryside Barber Shoppe is a pillar of the small community of Wonder Lake.

Since 1962, Bob Anderson has cut hair and conversed with customers young and old at his modest storefront on Barnard Mill Road.

But many of those conversations have taken a turn for the worse.

“When I started, there were a lot of German immigrants who were buying small summer homes here. And this is where they retired,” Anderson said.

“Now those same people come into the shop and all they talk about is their property-tax bill. They can’t afford it anymore.”

Bearing the nation’s highest property taxes is no easy task for many Illinoisans, Anderson included. The house he built for his family, just a stone’s throw from his barber shop, came with a nearly $10,000 property-tax bill this year.

“I grew up around here, and there

was not a home that cost $10,000,” Anderson said.

Rising property taxes are what first spurred Anderson to activism. Residents elected him to the local school board in 2015 on a school district consolidation platform. And on June 15, he made his biggest splash yet.

The barber from Wonder Lake made headlines across the state for paying his property taxes in $1 bills. Joining him was Dan Aylward, a resident of nearby McHenry who said rising property taxes are forcing him out of a home his uncle built in 1911.

“The day I leave this place I will cry,” Aylward said. “It’s more than a structure to me. It’s part of our heritage.

And they’re taking it away.”

To pay his first of two installments of property taxes for the year, Aylward arrived at the McHenry County treasurer’s office with $5,734.18.

He paid a bit extra this year. “Two cents for my opinion,” Aylward said.

A study released April 27 by global real estate services company CoreLogic shows Illinoisans face the highest

median property-tax rate in the nation at 2.67 percent. That means an Illinois homeowner with a house worth $200,000 would pay $5,340 in property taxes for the year.

That bill is double the national median, according to the study. Some Illinois homeowners are paying more in property taxes than they do on their mortgages.

Many families decide to downsize to save on property taxes. Others try to scrimp and save. Others leave.

Residential property taxes now eat up 6.4 percent of the typical household income in Illinois, according to Illinois Policy Institute research. In 1990, that share was 3.6 percent.

While property taxes have been on a dramatic rise throughout the state, incomes have flatlined. In other words, the cost of local government is crowding out other items in family budgets: groceries, diapers, medicine, you name it.

Instead, nearly two-thirds of Illinoisans’ property-tax dollars go to 859 local school districts, which are ripe for reform. More than a third of those districts

serve fewer than 600 students. And 3 in 4 superintendents earn a six-figure salary.

Illinoisans shouldn’t be footing the bill for expensive extra administrators they don’t need.

Consolidating Illinois school districts would be a big step in the right direction when it comes to property taxes. If the average Illinois school district served the same number of students as the average California school district, for example, Illinois taxpayers would be on the hook for 500 fewer school districts.

Beyond action at the local level, Illinois state lawmakers have refused to grant relief to homeowners. Even amid record-breaking bills, the General Assembly failed to send even a limited property-tax freeze to the governor’s desk in 2016.

Without reform, homeowners can expect even more pain in their wallets.

New-look Barbs wrap up summer season

Coach Al Biancalana has been preaching that to his DeKalb boys basketball team throughout the summer season. Given that the Barbs have just one player returning this year who saw any significant playing time this year, he really is hoping it sticks.

“There’s a lot of things we’ve done the last two years in building a tradition of how the program will play and

present themselves,” the third-year coach said. “Once we get the message across, it doesn’t matter who is on the floor – as long as you play with the principles you hold dear, we expect to be in contention to win championships this year.”

The Barbs graduated eight seniors, including every rotation player except point guard Cole Tucker. This summer, Tucker played in only about five games with the Barbs because of his obligations with football – he is a wide receiver on the football team and committed to Northern Illinois for football.

Biancalana said the Barbs had an up-and-down summer, winning a tournament at NIU, but showing some rough patches as well.

“We had some ugly moments, some growing pains and some struggles trying to find our identity. It’s been a process this summer and will continue to be a process as we begin again in November.”

Without Tucker, Biancalana said, he lost out on experimenting with different ways to use the senior at his point guard position. On the other side, he added that it gave other players a chance to step up, as Biancala-

na knows what Tucker brings to the table.

Darvon Sisson, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, has impressed Biancalana in the paint. The coach said he also liked the play of 6-0 senior guard Michael Mitchell, 6-1 sophomore guard Michael Newman and 6-2 junior guard/ forward Michael Vilet. “(Sisson) is primed to have a very good year,” Biancalana said. “Guys Michael Mitchell and (6-0 senior forward) DeMonte Blalock are two other guys that can contribute. They didn’t play much last year, but have the ability to contribute at a higher level.”

OAKLAND, Calif. – Kevin Durant decided his best chance for “growth” means leaving his beloved Oklahoma City behind for a big move out West to join the star-studded, record-setting Golden State Warriors and play alongside Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

In the most anticipated move of the NBA offseason, Durant announced his decision Monday on The Players’ Tribune. His contract is for $54 million over two years and includes a player option, a person with knowledge of the deal said Monday, speaking on the condition of anonymity because details weren’t made public. Durant’s move will become official as soon as Thursday, when free agents can sign their new contracts.

“The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a player – as that has always steered me in the right direction,” Durant said in the article.

“But I am also at a point in my life where it is of equal importance to find

With the addition of Durant, the Warriors become the league’s latest team to add a superstar chasing a championship to a lineup of All-Stars.

James made the move from Cleveland to Miami in 2010, joining a lineup that featured Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. They reached four NBA Finals as a group and won two championships.

“I’m from Washington, D.C., originally, but Oklahoma City truly raised me. It taught me so much about family as well as what it means to be a man,” Durant said.

Roger Penske offers impassioned

The Associated Press DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – One of his drivers had just used a dominating run to capture his first career victory at famed Daytona International Speedway. The win was the 100th for the organization at NASCAR’s top level.

To get to victory lane, his other driver offered an assist in the closing laps. Unrelated, he also spun another driver on the last lap to create another round of hard feelings.

So instead of basking in the triumph of victory while wearing a champagne-soaked white shirt, Roger Penske was borderline angry in his impassioned defense of drivers Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano.

Keselowski’s victory Saturday night was his third of the season, first at Daytona after years of struggles on the high-banked superspeedway. He got a late push on a final restart from Logano, who then irked Kurt Busch when contact on the final lap sent Busch spinning through the grass.

“Joey has taken, I think, some undue criticism from my perspective,” the team owner said. “I could name three or four things that certainly weren’t his fault. He’s one of the best

drivers on the racetrack out there day in and day out, and sure, people make mistakes. A lot of these drivers can knock somebody off the track, and they say, ‘Hey, I’m sorry.’ They don’t let Logano do that.

Keselowski recruited Logano to the team the season after Keselowski delivered Penske his first Sprint Cup title. Since his 2013 arrival, Logano and Keselowski have combined for 24 Cup wins. They’ve won 21 more races in the Xfinity Series, which Penske uses to develop team personnel and give sponsors a sampling of the organization at a lower price than the Cup level.

They’ve helped develop Ryan Blaney, a future star in NASCAR who has been lent to the Wood Brothers along with the several crew members who are preparing for the top level.

And they probably should have given Penske two more titles.

Keselowski was the class of the field in 2014, when he won six races, but had late bumps in the debut of the elimination format in NASCAR’s playoffs.

Despite a win and four top-four finishes in the final five races, he was denied a shot to race for the title.

It was Logano who led the Penske charge last season. He won the Daytona 500 and three consecutive races in the Chase.

But a feud with Matt Kenseth wouldn’t go away and Kenseth intentionally wrecked him in an act of retaliation that ultimately kept Logano out of the championship finale.

So it’s understandable that Penske is tired of the bad rap his drivers receive. They’ve proved to be among the elite talent in NASCAR, and their contributions to the storied Penske organization are immeasurable.

Together, in this 50th anniversary season of Team Penske, Keselowski and Logano are a massive part of the 100th win.

Indeed, Logano has taken his share of hazing from many veterans during his rapid rise into NASCAR. He was famous before he’d ever turned a lap, hyped as the next big thing, and many drivers took umbrage to the family wealth that eased his road to NASCAR’s top level.

Penske is used to defending Logano, who was recruited to the team by Keselowski three years ago when Keselowski was unselfish enough to look past a teammate who could match him on the track and saw only a talent who could strengthen the organization.

Penske is also used to defending Keselowski, who is outspoken and doesn’t back down from anything. Unlike

The Associated Press CHICAGO – The flashy speed is as advertised. It’s the power that is a bit of a surprise, even for Tim Anderson.

Anderson and Dioner Navarro each hit a two-run homer off CC Sabathia, helping James Shields and the White Sox beat the New York Yankees, 8-2, Monday.

The Sox had a string of 15 consecutive solo shots, matching a franchise record, before Anderson connected in the third inning, tying it at 2. Brett Lawrie hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the fifth before Navarro belted a drive to left field for his fifth homer.

Anderson went 2 for 4 for his 12th multihit game since he was promoted from the minors June 10. The 2013 first-round pick has four homers in 23 games with the Sox after hitting four in 55 games with Triple-A Charlotte.

“I guess it’s daddy strength kicking in,” said Anderson, who became a parent for the first time during spring training.

“I thought his stuff was much better than the numbers indicated, but that’s

baseball,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “You have to make pitches all the time.”

While Sabathia is struggling, Shields (4-9) got his second straight win after a long slump that started with San Diego and carried over to the Sox after he was acquired in a trade a month ago. The right-hander, who went 0-2 with a 15.80 ERA in his first four starts for the Sox, limited New York to five hits in six innings.

“You’re going to have rough stretch-

es pretty much every year, so it’s nothing crazy,” Shields said. “But we’re just going to continue to work hard and try to get this team some wins.”

The Yankees loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, but Shields retired Aaron Hicks on a fly to right to end the inning. They put the first two batters on in the eighth before Nate Jones struck out Didi Gregorius, Headley and Hicks – all swinging.

New York (40-42) went 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position.

“That was the difference in the game,” Girardi said. “They got the hits when they needed them, and we didn’t.

We had plenty of opportunities.”

The Yankees also were hurt by three errors by the normally sure-handed Gregorius at shortstop, including a flubbed grounder that helped the Sox score two runs in the eighth.

Todd Frazier went 3 for 3 with two walks as the Sox (43-40) moved three games over .500 for the first time since June 3. It has won five of six and 10 of 14 overall.

“It was just one of those days,” Frazier said. “You felt like you were going to get on every time and it felt pretty good.”

Bryant, Contreras homer to help Cubs rout Reds

CHICAGO – Trounced by the team that swept them out of the NL Championship Series last fall, the Cubs got back to the business of beating their other opponents.

Kris Bryant hit his NL-best 24th home run before leaving with a bruised leg, Willson Contreras and Addison Russell also went deep, and the Cubs pounded the struggling Cincinnati Reds, 10-4, Monday.

Playing the NL Central’s lastplace team was just what the major league-leading Cubs needed after getting outscored 32-11 in a four-game sweep by the Mets in New York.

“The power of 24 hours,” manager Joe Maddon said. “We had a tough stay in New York City.”

It looked a whole lot easier against a Reds team that could challenge the franchise record of 101 losses.

Cincinnati fired pitching coach Mark Riggins in an effort to shake up a staff with the majors’ worst ERA, then lost for the 11th time in 13 games.

ond inning and scored three times before exiting with a bruised lower left leg in the fifth. He was hurt making a catch in left field in the top half when center fielder Albert Almora Jr. ran into him.

Matt Szczur batted for Bryant in the bottom half. He would have stayed in had the game been closer and should be fine for Tuesday, Maddon said.

Almora said he didn’t hear Bryant calling for the ball and took responsibility for the collision.

“I came in after the game, and I tried to find him,” Almora said. “He’s doing all right. I gave him like 15,000 hugs.”

Contreras capped a three-run second with a solo drive off Cody Reed (0-3) that made it 6-0. Russell drove in three runs and scored two.

Kyle Hendricks (7-6) gave up an unearned run and four hits in 51⁄3 innings as the Cubs started a four-game homestand on a winning note after going 4-7 on their longest trip of the season.

Zack Cozart and Eugenio Suarez hit back-to-back home runs for Cincinnati in the seventh. But the Reds committed two errors and Reed struggled again on the mound.

LONDON – It was raining, ever so slightly, and her Wimbledon fourthround match was slipping away, ever so slightly, when Serena Williams stumbled as she ran to the net, winding up seated on the slick Centre Court grass.

Her opponent, two-time major champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, sent a shot flying past Williams to go up a break at 5-4 in the opening set.

Williams was slow to get up. She wasn’t injured, but was worried she could be. Why, she demanded to know from chair umpire Marija Cicak, wasn’t the retractable roof shut?

Eventually, after one more game and much discussion, action was delayed for nearly 30 minutes while the cover was closed.

Whether it was the transformation to an indoor court, the strategy session the break allowed her to have with coach Patrick Mouratoglou – or, as Williams suggested, simply the chance to calm down – she completely dominated the rest of the way, taking the last nine games to beat the 13th-seeded Kuznetsova 7-5, 6-0 on Monday.

“I’m so intense on the court. I give 200 percent every time I’m out there.

Every single point. Sometimes I just need to take a deep breath and relax. I just needed to do that. I can do that on the timeouts,” said Williams, who is seeking her seventh Wimbledon title and 22nd Grand Slam trophy overall.

“That’s one thing the past four years I’ve been really doing a lot of, just really taking a deep breath, re-collecting myself,” the No. 1-ranked Williams continued. “I had a little more time to do it this time.”

Donations found Fairdale resident Deena Schell, this time in the form of windows from Andersen Windows.

A seven-man crew installed six windows and a sliding glass door within a few hours on the morning of June 24. Piece by piece, the Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County home on White Street is coming together, started first by Hines Lumber, which provided the lumber and much of the building supplies.

When the EF-4 tornado – with winds up to 200 mph – struck Fairdale about 7:15 p.m. April 9, 2015, the Schell family home was lifted from its foundation and destroyed. The family has been living in Kingston.

Schell, a single mother who works at Oak Crest Retirement Center in DeKalb, hopes the three-bedroom ranch home that she’s helped build will be ready for her and daughters Haleigh, 14, and Calli, 12, to move into by August. She’ll even get to keep her old address – 32493 White St. “I cannot wait,” Schell said. “I’m so excited – this has always been home, always will be home.”

26 Viral infections don’t respond to antibiotics Dear Dr. K: I’ve been under the weather for a few days. This morning I blew my nose and saw greenish mucus, so I called my doctor and requested antibiotics. He refused. Why? Dear Reader: Your doctor is correct not to prescribe antibiotics based on the color of your mucus alone. Despite what many people think, you cannot rely on the color or consistency of nasal discharge to distinguish viral from bacterial sinus infections. That’s an important distinction because only bacterial infections respond to antibiotics.

Color and consistency aren’t even good indicators of whether you’re dealing with an infection at all. Seasonal allergies, for example, can cause thick or thin, yellow, green or clear nasal discharge – even though there’s no infection at all.

Why do we have mucus in the first place?

For one thing, it’s important for hydration.

Mucus is found on tissues that come into contact with elements from the outside world, such as the lining of the nose, sinuses and mouth. These tissues would dry out and crack if mucus didn’t provide moisture.

Mucus also is important for protection.

It is thick and sticky, so it can trap dust, bacteria or other unwanted passers-by in the air and prevent them from entering the body.

Mucus also contains immune system cells, including white blood cells, which kill any bothersome trespassers it catches.

When the white blood cells in the tissue lining encounter an irritant or infectious organism, they produce enzymes to repel the invaders. These enzymes contain iron, which can give nasal discharge a greenish color. If the mucus remains in place (as when you’re sleeping), it becomes more concentrated and so may appear darker green or yellow. This is the natural order of things, whether the offending agent is a virus or a bacterium.

That being said, there are times when antibiotics are warranted. For example, antibiotics might be worth considering when: • an infection drags on for more than 10 days, or gets worse after a week; • the discharge is thick and uniformly white (it looks like pus); • there is a high fever that isn’t improving; • severe symptoms do not respond to the usual over-the-counter sinus and cold remedies.

An overuse of antibiotics has caused an epidemic of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in our environment. Antibiotics can be very beneficial, even life-saving, when used appropriately. But when you’ve got a viral infection, they can’t do anything for you. All they can do is cause side effects and increase the risk of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The bacteria that cause the most common infections (such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases) increasingly have developed resistance to antibiotics. The World Health Organization, for instance, has warned gonorrhea soon may become untreatable.

Your doctor is wise to be cautious in prescribing antibiotics. Too much of a good thing can be bad.

But if his chosen finesse loses, he will need an opponent to have a singleton king in the other minor, which is so unlikely.

Instead, South should aim at these 10 tricks: one spade, six hearts, two diamonds and one club. He wins with his spade ace, cashes the diamond ace, and leads his second diamond.

West wins and continues spades, then East shifts to a club. South wins with his ace, crosses to the heart king, discards the club queen on the diamond queen, draws trumps, and claims.
