Strong summer enrollment helps lead POLL YESTERDAY’S Kish College into 2016-17 school year RESULTS Enrollments are up this summer at Kishwaukee College for the first time in four years. This is good news as we strive to meet the higher education needs of our district residents. Our highest increase in enrollment this summer is in our traditional aged students, those younger than 24.

Most notable is our increase in high school age students, as we have expanded partnerships in offering dual credit. High school students are able to earn college credit, getting experience in what it takes to be successful in a college course.

Helping our young people be college- and careerready, no matter what their higher educational choice may be, is a goal of the college.

It is truly impressive that this enrollment growth has occurred after a year of significant budget challenges, with having to reduce 17 percent of the college staff. In the past semester, I have seen the passion and commitment that our faculty and staff demonstrate every day to the almost 8,000 students annually that choose to come to Kishwaukee College.

Our faculty and staff are second to none and this past year their commitment and dedication to our students and excellence in education has not only been reinforced, it has been the driving force behind the college move forward.

During the past few weeks, we have hosted community listening sessions to determine the future direction of the college. We are appreciative to those individuals attending and providing feedback. With diminished resources,

VIEWS Laurie Borowicz we need to be strategic and intentional in our work and listen to our constituents, ensuring we are meeting the needs of those so generously supporting the college. We are committed to continuing our reduction of dependence on state aid in our operating budget.

Our decline of relying on state aid has begun, with a decline from 22 percent of our budget being state aid in the 2015-16 budget to just 10 percent in the proposed 2016-17 budget. We are also pleased that because of changes implemented at the college, we have retained 61 percent of our college reserves.

It will be imperative that we forge strong local partnerships to continue the important work of serving our students given the state economic climate. Private-public partnerships, increasing enrollment, and examining cost-reduction strategies, while maintaining our focus on quality in our service to students, will be our strategies for achieving our goal of decreased dependence on state funding. I am proud to be leading Kishwaukee College during this time of challenge and transformation.

TODAY’S TALKER Police: Central Park blast likely caused by firework

NEW YORK – A firework that exploded when a 19-year-old unwittingly stepped on it Sunday in Central Park, seriously injuring his left foot, didn’t appear to be designed to intentionally hurt people, police officials said.

The homemade gadget was like an “explosive experiment” that was probably designed to “make a large noise, maybe make a flash,” concocted by someone with a basic understanding of chemistry, said Lt. Mark Torre, commanding officer of the New York Police Department’s bomb squad.

There was no evidence that the explosion was related to terrorism and there were no specific, credible threats on New York over the July Fourth weekend, the authorities said.

The injured man, who police did not identify, was walking in the park with two friends when he stepped on a rock covering the explosive. He was undergoing surgery to his left foot at a hospital and was in stable condition, fire officials said.

The 11 a.m. blast on the east side of Central Park could be heard for blocks, leaving some with the belief that it was part of a July Fourth celebration.

Tourist John Murphy, visiting the city from Connecticut, stayed with the injured man until emergency responders arrived and placed a tourniquet on his leg.

“His left leg was severely damaged, all bone and muscle,” Murphy said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio sent out a tweet reminding people to stay safe around fireworks.

“Fireworks are fun – but let’s leave them to the professionals,” the mayor tweeted.

Sandwich kicks off Fourth of July festivities with Freedom Days Parade

SANDWICH – Karsta Erickson grew up in Sandwich but now lives in Indiana. On Saturday, Erickson returned home for the Fourth of July weekend to watch the Sandwich Freedom Days Parade with her husband and two sons and to spend time with her family.

The Sandwich Freedom Days Parade began at 10 a.m. Saturday, starting and ending at the Sandwich Fairgrounds and looping through downtown Sandwich. The annual parade is hosted by the Sandwich Park District in partnership with the City of Sandwich and the Sandwich Fair Association.

This year, approximately 60 units participated in the parade, including the Sandwich fire and police departments, local businesses, sports teams, nonprofit organizations and churches.

Groups participating in the parade not only walked on foot, they rode various forms of transportation: hayrack floats, monster trucks, antique cars and tractors.

Park District Director Sue Swithin said this is one of the largest parades ever held in the celebration’s more than 60-year history.

“The parade has grown significantly over the years, and we feature new and different floats and organizations every year,” Swithin said.

“The parade brings the community together and kicks off the holiday weekend. It keeps everyone together for the right reason: celebrating our freedom.”

This year’s parade grand marshal was World War II veteran Charles Rapp, who saw combat in Ardennes, Rhineland and the occupation in Central Europe and received multiple honors and awards, including the

The parade featured musical performances by the Sandwich High School Renegade Regiment, accompanied by the Sandwich Regiment Color Guard, and the Sandwich Middle School Jr. Regiment. The park district hired Tunes of Glory, a bagpipe and drum band from Warrenville, to march and perform in the parade.

WSPY radio personality Jim Teckenbrock were stationed halfway through the parade route and announced the parade as it passed.

During the parade, Olson and Teckenbrock announced the parade’s award-winning floats: the Best Family Award was given to the Haff Family, who participated in the parade with seven antique tractors; the Best Non-profit Award was given to Our Savior Lutheran Church, whose float featured a living nativity; the Best Business Award was given to Mid-Day Play, whose float featured dogs in patriotic outfits; and the Judges’ Choice Award was given to Knuckle Hedz Bar & Grill for its float depicting a Fourth of July barbecue and picnic.

Other Fourth of July events held in Sandwich included a pork chop and chicken barbecue catered by 5-B’s Catering Service at the Sandwich Fire Department; water fights for children and adults Saturday and a 1-mile fun run, 5K Freedom Run and fireworks Sunday.

Vietnam veteran Ed Gacek has lived in Sandwich for 40 years, and every year, his family watches the parade together from the same spot.

“The Fourth of July has special meaning to me as a veteran,” Gacek said. “My family comes to the parade every year, and this year, all our grandchildren are here. We also go to the other events in town. It’s a holiday weekend, and it’s nice to spend it with friends and family.”

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University bid farewell to one of its venerable deans Thursday, who retired after being on campus for three decades.

“There’s an opportunity that came my way. It was very difficult to say no to,” said Promod Vohra, who has headed NIU’s College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (CEET) since 2005. “The job was good and uses all the skills that I’ve learned being a dean and in academia.”

Also important, he said, his new role as a senior vice president in the private sector allows him and his family to remain in DeKalb.

Vohra’s journey began at NIU in 1986, when he became the first student to enroll in CEET’s graduate program to study electrical engineering. After graduating two years later, he started

as an instructor in CEET and began his ascent to full professor in the technology department.

Vohra, 58, continued his studies and employment with NIU, getting an Ed.D in instruction technology in 1993, and four year later, being named associate dean, and then selected to be the dean.

“I’m leaving [my successor] a good college, with a growing trend, satisfied students and with an optimal operational environment,” he said.

He immigrated here with is family from India. The experiences back home and his journey here in the U.S. inspired a compassion in him, he said, that has led him to do continued outreach to minority and underserved communities.

Vohra boasts an engineering program that includes a diverse student body of nearly 2,000. Also, NIU has forged partnerships with area community and four-year colleges to offer opportunities for students interested in engineering to afford classes.

Starting this fall, NIU will offer engineering courses at Rock Valley College in Rockford, the retired dean said.

CEET also has given to high school youth in places such as south suburban Chicago and Kankakee.

“My whole mantra of success is compassion and opportunity,” he said.

Vohra has been a fixture on campus and throughout the community

at large. He represented the school in a myriad of official and unofficial capacities. NIU credits Vohra with helping CEET grow its enrollment and become a nationally ranked academic program.

His leadership has led to employment collaborations for students and area companies, supporting the regional manufacturing community’s needs and partnering with other area colleges to help students take needed engineering courses – among a host of other distinctions, according to NIU officials.

“Promod has been a great ambassador for NIU and for engineering as a discipline,” said NIU President Doug Baker. “In many regards, Promod is the ultimate embodiment of student career success that we try to help every NIU graduate attain.”

LOCAL BRIEFS DeKalb County Treasurer distributes $108.4 million in taxes

SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Treasurer’s Office distributed $108,443,764.06 in property taxes to local taxing bodies ahead of schedule.

Of the $213,322,478.96 to be collected, $108,443,764.06, or 50.8 percent, has been collected and distributed to date, according to a news release from Christine J. Johnson’s office.

“By law the first tax distribution is not required to be made until within 30 days after the first installment due date, which would be the first week in July,” Johnson said. “We have done two distributions prior to the time the first one is required by law.

We are hopeful that these early distributions will assist the taxing districts, especially the school districts, with their cash flow.”

Here’s how that $108,443,764.06 was distributed: • School districts: $64,607,209.61 • DeKalb County and Forest Preserve District: $12,140,201.82 • Cities and villages: $7,336,324.75 • Community colleges: $6,229,419.47 • Townships and township road and bridge districts: $4,586,246.32

New free days at Midwest Museum of Natural History

A new schedule of free days at the Midwest Museum of Natural History in Sycamore will begin this month.

The new schedule will offer free general admission to all Illinois residents. Guests can explore the main gallery and permanent exhibits, observe live animals, play in the Discovery Den, and check out temporary exhibits with free general admission.

The 2016 free days will be the first Wednesday and Thursday of each month, along with the following additional days: Aug. 9, Sept. 6-9, Oct. 11-14, Nov. 22-25 and Dec. 1.

The DeKalb Municipal Band’s “A Star Spangled Spectacular” today will include a gala celebration of American patriotic music, a salute to veterans, soloist Gregor King in his second appearance with the band, a trumpet trio and musical fireworks.

The performance Gregor King begins at 8 p.m. at the Dee Palmer Band Shell at Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

King is the choir director for Clinton Rosette and Huntley middle schools in DeKalb and recently directed the musical, “My Son Pinocchio Jr.” He sings tenor as a member of Cor Cantiamo at Northern Illinois University and the St. Charles Singers.

He will travel to England in the summer of 2017 to perform in an international choral tour.

King received a bachelor’s degree in vocal music education from Millikin University.

During his collegiate career, he competed in the international Harmony Sweepstakes, an a cappella singing competition, where his group placed fourth overall.

He also traveled to China during the 2008 Olympic games to sing with his collegiate choir. His acting credits include Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof” and Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables.”

King will perform Michael Buble’s rendition “Cry Me a River” and “Anthem” from Tim Rice’s 1987 musical “Chess.”

The song describes the feelings of Soviet Russia’s chess champion Anatoly Sergievsky when he defects. His final vocal is Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” “An American Fanfare” will open the patriotic festivities.

Arranger Rick Kirby based this flashy fanfare on the melody “My Country Tis of Thee.” Next is “American Flourish,” which incorporates “Yankee Doodle,” “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” and “Shenandoah,” and Henry Fillmore’s 1929 march “Americans We.” Leroy Anderson’s trumpet trio “Bugler’s Holiday” will feature John Armstrong, Brian Balika and Gregg Archer.

“America Forever March,” by James V. Colonna, was composed the night of the bombing of the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor and was heard regularly on the weekly broadcasts of the United States Marine Band throughout World War II. No Fourth of July concert would be complete without Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with M-80 fireworks bombs and bursts of flame to simulate the firing of cannons.

Marches for the evening include “Emblem of Freedom March” by Karl King and “The Liberty Bell” by John Philip Sousa.

“An American Spectacular” features a multitude of well-known tunes in a musical anthology.

Two of America’s greatest composers of popular music, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin, will be represented with “An American in Paris” and “Irving Berlin – A Symphonic Portrait.”

A salute to veterans and all current servicemen will be heard in “Armed Forces – The Pride of America” featuring a vocal quartet and military service songs.

Carmen Dragon’s “America the Beautiful” and “The Stars & Stripes Forever” will lead into a spectacular display of fireworks accompanied by the band.

Admission is free. Bench seating is available, or bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Kaneland school district sets 2016-17 budget

Board also hires new kindergarten teacher amid influx of students

Kaneland School District 302’s tentative budget for the upcoming school year calls for $70.9 million in spending, including an operating budget of $58.1 million and a $2.3 million total deficit, records show.

School board members unanimously approved the tentative spending plan at their meeting June 27.

The board also discussed and approved an amended budget for the 2015-16 fiscal year. In addition, they unanimously approved the Fox Valley Career Center’s tentative $2.2 million budget for 2016-17.

Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs said the career center has its own board of directors, but Kaneland must oversee their budget.

Fuchs added that the district’s budget might not be completely accurate because the state of Illinois has no budget. District officials

Associate superintendent must guess at how much aid the district will end up receiving from the state, she said.

Coupled with this is the fact that the state still owes the school district about $1.5 million in funding, Fuchs said.

Fuchs said the 2015-16 budget that was approved in September was amended in part because more expenditures were needed. Fuchs said some of the changes included an extra $400,000 needed for teacher salaries, as well as pension contributions.

seven ayes.

The board also discussed a motion to hire on another full-time kindergarten teacher for Kaneland John Shields Elementary School in Sugar Grove.

The school has 32 enrolled kindergarten students for the upcoming school year, and the district has a recommended maximum of 22 students in each class. A new kindergarten teacher would allow for two classes of 16 students each, board members said.

This influx of students has created a waiting list for the extended care kindergarten program, as one teacher cannot manage extended-care for nearly three dozen students, board members said, adding that there are nine students on the extended-care wait list.

Although some board members expressed concern over hiring a kindergarten teacher when it was still possible for enrollment to decrease over the summer, ultimately, the motion passed unanimously.

“It’s not an exact science,” board member Peter Lopatin said. “But it’s what’s best.”

The board also was presented with Kaneland 2020, a new strategic plan to be implemented throughout the district.

Kaneland 2020 derives from the mission to make students college-, career- and community-ready, while asking the important question – “What does that mean?”

The new strategic plan is meant to ensure that students are on the path they need to be for the future they want, while giving students more independence to create their future and make more decisions on their own about their learning environment and style, according to the presentation. “[Kaneland 2020] shows what a Kaneland graduate will look like by 2020,” Superintendent Todd Leden said.

The motion to implement Kaneland 2020 passed unanimously.

As late budgets go, Illinois has no equal

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois has redefined what it means to have a late budget.

Other states have gone several months without a spending plan before, and Illinois has had prior delays that caused great anxiety. But going an entire fiscal year without a full budget?

It’s the only time in post-World War II history it’s happened in the country.

“Late budgets will have a new meaning after you guys are done,” said Arturo Perez, a fiscal analyst with the National Conference of State Legislatures who has researched past overdue budgets nationally.

So what did past budget delays here and elsewhere look like? And how did Illinois get to this point? Here’s a look.

JUST A MOMENT

Jim Edgar found himself in an unsettling position as Illinois governor in 1991 when the state went 18 days without a budget.

“We thought ’91 was protracted, and it looks like child’s play compared to what they’ve gone through this year,” the former Republican governor said.

The 1991 standoff, which Edgar said “seems like just a moment” compared to today, kept staff at colleges from collecting their paychecks.

At the time, Edgar said the state had not experienced a budget delay like it.

Edgar part of firm built to profit off budget stalemate

CHICAGO – Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar has been critical of fellow Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner over the state’s ongoing budget stalemate. But Edgar also is a partner in a business that is trying to make money off the crisis.

Edgar and legislators resolved their differences by agreeing to make the surcharge for education permanent, while extending the tax for local governments for another two years.

There were other late-budget scares

in revenue for fiscal 2014, $501,000 for fiscal 2015 and $532,000 for fiscal 2016.

About 57 live adult entertainment facilities were identified by the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault when it was conducting research on the industry as it supported legislation calling for the tax, according to executive director Polly Poskin.

“We anticipated it would be a greater number of clubs that would be paying, and we would have anticipated about a million in revenue,” Poskin said. She said she doesn’t know “if the tax that they’re paying is accurate and consistent with their gross receipts.”

But she said the money received does help Illinoisans who have been sexually assaulted.

“[It’s] greatly needed and greatly appreciated and well used,” Poskin said.

New invasive plant with toxic sap in southern Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE – A giant invasive plant with toxic sap that can burn human skin has turned up in southeastern Wisconsin for the first time, state environmental officials say.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the Department of Natural Resources confirmed in June that hundreds of giant hogweed plants were present in Sheboygan.

The plant is a native of the Caucasus region of Eurasia, between the Black and Caspian seats. It was brought to the United Kingdom and to the United States in

1917 as an ornamental plant. It can grow to as high as 20 feet and sprout 3-foot leaves.

It is fast-growing, invading roadsides, the edges of forests and empty lots. It also produces thousands of seeds, which can be dispersed by flowing water or animals. The most common way it spreads, however, is by humans who are attracted by its size and decide to plant it.

Giant hogweed can crowd out native species and its sap contains glucosides that react with the sun’s ultraviolet rays and can severely burn the skin, cause blisters or cause temporary blindness.

It’s been found in Michigan, Illinois, Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon and Washington. It was first discovered in Wisconsin in 2004.

Jimmy John’s owner gives $150,000 to Illinois trail project

MAHOMET – The owner of the Jimmy John’s sandwich chain has donated $150,000 to a rail trail being built in eastern Illinois.

According to The News-Gazette in Champaign, Jimmy John Liautaud said he decided to make the donation after recently reading about efforts by the Kickapoo Rail Trail’s planners to raise money. He called the trail good for the area. Jimmy John’s is based in Champaign.

The Champaign County Forest Preserve District and others are building the 24.5-mile Kickapoo Rail Trail. The first segment would be 6.7 miles and is under construction between Urbana and the small town of St. Joseph.

BAGHDAD – A suicide truck bomb in downtown Baghdad killed 115 people and wounded nearly 200 others who were out shopping and celebrating early Sunday ahead of the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, security and medical officials said.

The attack, claimed by the Islamic State group, was the deadliest in months in the Iraqi capital, and came despite a series of recent gains against the extremists, including the capture of Fallujah, which was believed to have been a source of such attacks.

The bomb went off shortly after midnight in a crowded shopping area in the central Karada district, killing at least 115 people and wounding 187, according to a police official.

The dead included at least 15 children, 10 women and six policemen. At least 12 other people were still missing and feared dead.

Karada is a major commercial area lined with clothing and jewelry stores, restaurants and cafés, and was packed with shoppers ahead of Wednesday’s Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of Ramadan. Most of the victims were inside a multi-story shopping and amusement mall, where dozens burned to death or suffocated, police said.

It was the deadliest attack in Iraq since July 2015 and among the worst single bombings in more than a decade of war and insurgency.

“It was like an earthquake,” said Karim

Sami, a 35-year-old street vendor. “I wrapped up my goods and was heading home when I saw a fireball with a thunderous bombing,” the father of three said.

“I was so scared to go back and started to make phone calls to my friends, but none answered.” He said that one of his friends was killed, another was wounded and one was still missing.

As with many previous attacks, IS swiftly claimed responsibility for the bombing in a statement posted online, saying it had targeted Shiite Muslims. The Associated Press could not verify the authenticity of the statement, but it was posted on a militant website commonly used by the extremists.

Firefighters and civilians could be seen carrying the dead away, their bodies wrapped in blankets and sheets. Smoke billowed from the shopping center, which was surrounded by the twisted and burned wreckage of cars and market stalls. A group of women were sitting on the pavement, crying for their loved ones.

Elsewhere in Baghdad, a roadside bomb went off in the mostly Shiite Shaab neighborhood, killing five people and wounding 16, another police officer said. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but it bore the hallmarks of IS militants.

The Sunni extremists frequently target the country’s Shiite majority and Shiite-led security forces, viewing them as apostates deserving of death.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Here at home, Donald Trump has established himself atop the Republican Party with a campaign of nationalism and unabashed xenophobia.

He has branded Mexicans as criminals; he has promised to wall off the southern border of the United States; and he has pledged to bar many, if not all, Muslims from entry.

That’s too bad.

The simple truth is that native populations need the industry, the vitality and the ambition of immigrants.

The United States, particularly, has a history of accommodating immigrants and assimilating them into the cultural and economic mainstream.

Trump’s white working-class supporters hail from immigrant ancestors.

Much of the population of 11 million or so who live among us without papers is trying hard to assimilate: They work, they pay taxes, they even buy homes. They join churches and community orga-

nizations. They send their children to school.

Those who came to this country as children usually speak English fluently and consider themselves Americans.

Obama’s 2012 executive order targeting the so-called Dreamers, who came to this country without papers before they turned 16, was not voided by the court.

It allows about 750,000 young adults without papers to obtain driver’s licenses, to work and to attend college.

Research shows that the benefits immigrants bestow on this country, even those who are here illegally, are greater than the cost of absorbing them. Unskilled laborers may contribute to a depression in wages for native workers, but the effect is slight.

They are not the leading cause of wage stagnation or job loss.

Still, the economic uncertainty of our time has made many American-born workers much more suspicious of competition from foreign-born laborers.

Those who have suffered job losses, stagnating wages and disappearing savings accounts are looking for scapegoats, and immigrants are easy to blame.

They also are angry about something else: the loss of power and privilege inherent in changing demographics. By the year 2040, as the nation grows browner, white

Americans will no longer constitute a numerical majority. Those simple statistics have fueled a furious backlash.

Indeed, the struggle over cultural identity has been the thematic music, the background noise, of Obama’s tenure.

He assumed the Oval Office not just as the first black president but also as a harbinger of a much more diverse nation. It’s an accident of fate that Obama’s father came to this country from Kenya on a student visa, hinting of the wave of globalization to come. It’s no wonder that immigration has been among the most volatile issues of his presidency.

It didn’t have to come to this.

As recently as the presidency of George W. Bush, Republican elites supported a strategy for giving legal status to undocumented immigrants.

But a vicious opposition from the grassroots scared them into a reversal.

They didn’t try to lead. They dropped their principles and ran to get ahead of their constituents.

They’re still running. They lack a trait less common than the primal instincts of fear and resentment: courage.

To the Editor: The DeKalb Municipal Band is in its 162nd year performing wonderful music for delighted audiences every Tuesday summer night at 8 p.m., except today, when it plays its annual Fourth of July spectacular with fireworks and all the holiday trimmings in Hopkins Park.

The band is the oldest continuous performing band in Illinois and hasn’t taken any years off since 1854. The group has been playing in Hopkins Park since the 1950s.

in the 1960s, and they’ve been there ever since.

Kirk Lundbeck is the conductor, and he is only the fourth in the band’s history following the 63-year tenure of Dee Palmer, who took over from his father in 1948, who succeeded his own father, the band’s first conductor. The band was founded by Dee Palmer’s great-grandfather, who was

himself a member.

We have been enjoying the band’s varied performances since coming to DeKalb 46 years ago. It fit so nicely into our life together having courted in the summers of 1963-65 attending Detroit Concert Band concerts on Belle Isle in Detroit.

We raised two daughters in DeKalb who loved attending and started our grand-daughter at age 3 who, regrettably, can attend only when she is in town from Minneapolis with her parents a couple of Tuesdays a summer.

Come join us.

Relax on the benches or bring a lawn chair or blanket and sit on the lawn. Some people even sit in their cars where they can hear and see everything quite well and can honk their horns in appreciation as part of the applause.

It’s all free. It’s great fun. It’s really wonderful music, terrifically performed.

It’s one of the highlights of summer in DeKalb and something DeKalb has been proud to call its own for 162 years.

Perhaps humans are destined by dint of our primal instincts to forever fear the other, to revolt continually against living peacefully in close proximity to those whose skin is a different hue, whose language lends a different sound, whose gods go by different names.

Maybe there is no antidote for the evolutionary proclivity to distrust those who don’t look or sound like us.

But it certainly is true that those instincts would be less volatile if they were not continuously stoked and primed by pandering and opportunistic politicians. From the United States to Great Britain to Austria, politicians have found advantage in fueling a dangerous xenophobia that blames immigrants for every lost job, every bad debt, every savage crime.

It was into that climate that the U.S. Supreme Court disgorged its decision overturning President Barack Obama’s temporary reprieve for several million undocumented immigrants. (The vote was a deadlocked 4-4, but its effect was to allow a lower court ruling against the president to stand.) The subject of immigration has been a dominant theme in this unruly election season. The high court’s action will only serve to make it more incendiary.

Artist to speak during brown bag lunch program DAILY CHRONICLE

Lyn Bute, one of the “Faces of Sycamore” and well-known artist, will be taking time to talk to local residents about the history of his work in the Sycamore area.

Bute is a two-time Illinois snow sculpture champion who has shared his talents by making numerous sculptures around town. Bute’s talk will be Thursday, July 7, at the Sycamore History Museum during its brown bag lunch program.

Depending on the weather, Bute usually creates at least one snow sculpture a year – often many more throughout the winter. Sycamore’s Parkway Restaurant has a display of his work, which is especially nice since these sculptures do not always

last very long. During his talk, Bute will show photos of his work, display a few tools, and talk about his next project, which will take place at the Sycamore History Museum.

Bute is one of the 50 people included in the Sycamore History Museum’s “Faces of Sycamore” exhibit. The exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays and Saturdays or by appointment.

This talk is part of the Sycamore History Museum’s brown bag lunch series on the first Thursday of the month.

The Ellwood House Museum will welcome Roads Scholar speaker Kay Shelton on July 15 for a special presentation about Lincoln Highway.

Begun in 1913, Lincoln Highway is the world’s longest memorial to President Abraham Lincoln and was the first improved coast-to-coast road in the United States.

In her talk, “Establishing the Lincoln Highway and Charitable Giving and Illinois,” Shelton will explore the road’s significance in the histories of Illinois and the United States.

Lincoln Highway passes some of America’s most important places, including Times Square in New York City, Gettysburg and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. On its

journey through Illinois, the Lincoln Highway becomes more local in its significance, yet it touches upon elements of the charitable and generous side of American culture.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with the talk beginning at noon. The lecture will be held in the Ellwood House Visitor Center, 509 N. First St. in DeKalb. This program is free of charge. All participants are encouraged to bring a sack lunch.

This lecture is part of the museum’s adult lecture series, “Local Lore.” Once a month, Local Lore shares stories relating to DeKalb’s history. Each lecture features a different guest speaker.

In his research, Johns focuses on computer analyses of DNA from multiple life forms, including Drosophila flies, maize, rice, pigs and petunias.

Add Variety and Health to Your Grill!

We are a couple of months into grilling season – a great time to add variety to your grilling adventures beyond traditional hamburger or hot dog options! While we all love those summer favorites, it can be nice to add some variety, as well as some healthier choices, to our gatherings. If you are ready to expand your grilling repertoire, keep reading for some tips to get you going!

Fish is a fantastic option for the grill – flavorful, fast and loaded with heart-healthy omega-3 fats! But even people who love fish sometimes shy away from grilling it, for fear of over-cooking it, or having it fall apart. The trick is to use the right grilling method for the right fish. Tuna steaks, salmon, halibut and swordfish are densely-textured and can be grilled directly on the grill grate, without having to worry about them falling through! More delicate fish such as tilapia and sole can be grilled inside of a foil packet or grill basket. Another key: marinate fish after – rather than before – grilling. Post-grill marinating ensures that the fish does not fall apart, and still comes away with excellent flavor. Grilling fish is a great way to provide your family with a delicious meal, as well as all of the heart- and brain-health benefits that fish provide. Grilled turkey burgers are another tasty and healthy option.

Compared to a traditional ground beef burger of the same size (4 oz.), a burger made with Jennie-O Lean Ground Turkey has less than half the calories and about one-fifth as much saturated fat!

Think turkey burgers are too dry? Think again! Following a few simple steps will ensure that your burgers are juicy and delicious. Start by forming your patties from lean ground turkey, with a couple of tablespoons of finely diced onions or scallions mixed in. Patties should be an even thickness right up to the edges – about ½ inch. Make sure not to work the patties too much – over-mixing can result in dry, tough burgers.

After your patties are formed, keep them in the refrigerator until you are ready for grilling. Finally, flip the burgers only once during the cooking process and resist the temptation to press down on burgers with a spatula! This will help the burgers retain all of their tasty juices inside, right where you want them! After cooking to a safe internal temperature of 165˚F, let the burgers rest for a couple of minutes. This will allow the burgers’ juices to settle and redistribute, resulting in juicy, flavorful turkey burgers!

Former Sycamore baseball star Cooper Vinz signs with Division II school

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Cooper Vinz feared that his baseball career was done.

Despite a successful run at Sycamore, Vinz didn’t have any offers coming out of high school. About a month later, he started to talk to Kishwaukee College coach Josh Pethod, and after two years with the Kougars, he springboarded himself into being able to sign with the University of Missouri-St. Louis (Division II), one of the top business schools in the nation.

“My senior year in high school and I didn’t know what to do, you have to get yourself ready for that moment of, this might be the last game I ever play in baseball,” Vinz said. “I thought for sure it was over. Coming out of high school, it was scary. I didn’t know what I would

do.”

Pethod said Vinz came on his radar as a junior for Sycamore, and he finished his senior season hitting around .450 with seven home runs and 45 RBIs. Still, there were no offers for him.

“I always assumed he’d go away to play somewhere,” Pethod said. “It was a shock he was still unsigned.”

Moving from first base to the outfield for the Kougars, Vinz led the team with 69 RBIs last season, hitting a teamhigh .435 with five home runs, 16 doubles and 60 runs scored. Pethod praised his technique at the plate – “He has the best mechanical swing I’ve ever seen,” he said – and Kishwaukee College has a history of sending players to Missouri-St. Louis, with former Kougar JonMichael Weaver graduating last year.

Although he didn’t have any offers coming out of high school, his standout

two seasons with the Kougars caused him to have to make a difficult decision.

He could play for Missouri-St. Louis, which has a strong business school and he wants to double-major in accounting and finance, or he could play for Central Methodist University (NAIA), which signed his longtime friend, Jared Johnson.

The two had played on the Sycamore Sidewinders travel team in middle school before Vinz went to Sycamore and Johnson played for DeKalb – eventually becoming teammates again at Kishwaukee College.

The decision was so difficult that Vinz asked Central Methodist for more time to think about it; and after Missouri-St. Louis came offering more money – he will have his tuition paid for – Vinz finally made up his mind.

“It was definitely hard making the

decision to go to Missouri because I played with him since I was young,” Vinz said of Johnson. “It’s a tough decision. Sometimes, I wish I didn’t have that decision I had to make, but in the end, I feel like I made the right decision to go to the place that would be the best for me academically, athletically and for my future. Knowing somebody you’ve known your whole life is a big reason why it was a fight between Missouri and CMU.” However, there is a downside for Vinz to signing with Missouri-St. Louis.

As a Cubs fan, he’s heading into enemy territory when he’ll play in St. Louis, home of the Cardinals.

“Coach talked about it – he knows I’m a Cubs fan,” Vinz said. “First thing he asked was if I was a Cubs fan, and I said yeah, and he said, ‘Well, I don’t like it, but I can work with it.’”

Athletic facilities become construction zones

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com SANDWICH – The summer months are typically quiet in the athletic department, but this year is noticeably louder with construction crews working around Sandwich High School.

A new track surface is being installed in the stadium, and a second project is underway in the main gymnasium.

“It’s busy. We’ve got a lot of things going on, but the track is obviously our first concern right now and our first big project,” Sandwich athletic director Tim Gipe said. “This is the project that needed to happen, and we were finally able to secure it. We’re really excited because it’s going to make it a lot nicer for the community to use, which is what we want. We want our community to be

involved with the school, too.”

The last track resurfacing project took place in 2008, but the condition of the track deteriorated in recent years.

The defects and cracks have been repaired and the surface leveled. A rubberized system was applied recently to make the track more durable. The facility will have six lanes, with eight lanes in the straightaways; and new painting details will be applied, including the Sandwich Indians’ logo on the track in front of the main bleachers. The project, under the direction of Track Surfaces Co. in St. Charles, is expected to be completed early this month.

“We had some drainage issues that we were able to fix that we didn’t know about, so hopefully that will help,” Gipe said. “It’s been crumbling, and the coaches have asked the last several years. It’s been a project we’ve wanted

Sandwich received a $22,500 grant from the KishHealth Foundation and additional funding through a private donation of $22,500 and a $4,000 donation from the DeKalb County Community Foundation. The Sandwich Sports Boosters also donated $10,000 to the project.

“We were very pleased to receive those donations,” Sandwich Superin-

tendent Rick Schmitt said.

Additional projects include a new floor in the main gymnasium. The floor will be sanded down, repaired and painted with new logos. That project is expected to be completed by early August.

“We’re excited about the gym floor, too. We’re going to put our S-logo on the floor and do a couple different things with paint schemes to spruce it up,” Gipe said. “We’re making things look good; and hopefully, when we open back up in August, it’s going to look nice.

We’re really excited.”

The coaching staff is also set for the 2016-17 season, with one change to the head coaching roster. Chris Johnson will replace Randy Malloy as the girls’ basketball head coach. Malloy announced his resignation in March after nine years with the Lady Indians.

HOUSTON – With four straight series wins, the latest against one of the hottest teams in baseball and two others against playoff contenders, the White Sox are declaring themselves “back.”

And while their 42-40 record isn’t sending shivers down the collective spine of all those who also consider themselves American League playoff contenders, the Sox have righted themselves with nine wins in their past 13 games heading home to play the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves this week before the All-Star break.

“Just keep playing,” manager Robin Ventura said. “We’re still in the hunt.

Mets complete all-too-familiar sweep of Cubs

NEW YORK – No big deal? It’s only June or July? These losses don’t matter because they’re not “big boy” games like the ones in October?

Don’t believe it. This rematch in New York mattered to the Cubs.

And when the Mets re-enacted last fall’s playoff sweep with a four-game, weekend sweep over the Cubs at Citi Field, it came with a familiar look, and sting.

And it mattered.

“Obviously, we probably were too excited about playing them again and kind of [looking for] revenge for what happened in the playoffs,” catcher Miguel Montero said. “Which I don’t think’s the smart thing to do. You’ve just got to play your game and forget. It’s already over.”

The Cubs got a painful reminder of last October in New York by the time Jon Lester was clobbered for eight quick runs in a 14-3 loss Sunday that finished off the worst series the Cubs have played this season.

Even before Sunday’s game, manager Joe Maddon said the series felt familiar, mostly because of the Cubs’ inability to

SPORTS BRIEF Loyola parts ways with women’s basketball coach Swoopes

CHICAGO – Loyola University has parted ways with women’s basketball coach Sheryl Swoopes.

The school said in April it would investigate allegations against Swoopes brought by former players. One former player, Cate Soan, has said Swoopes humiliated her and created a hostile environment.

On Sunday, the school released a three-sentence statement.

“Sheryl Swoopes is no longer serving as the women’s basketball coach at

Loyola University Chicago,” athletic director Steve Watson said in the statement. “A search for her replacement will begin immediately. Loyola thanks Sheryl for her service to the women’s basketball program.”

Swoopes has been at the private Chicago university for three seasons with a record of 31-62. She was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this year.

Swoopes was the first player signed by the WNBA and won three Olympic gold medals.

Kings for Temple, who appeared in five games for Sacramento in the 200910 season. He’s also played for Washington, San Antonio, Charlotte, Houston and Milwaukee.

“Ready to start a new chapter,” Temple wrote on Twitter. “So happy to be back in SAC!!! Love the fact that I’ll be here a little longer this time.”

The 30-year-old Temple spent the last four seasons with the Wizards, averaging 4.6 points in that span and a career-best 7.3 points last season.

Rajon Rondo has a new beginning in Chicago, and the Bulls have a new starting point guard.

The four-time All-Star agreed Sunday on a $30 million, two-year deal, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no deal can be signed until the league’s offseason moratorium ends on Thursday.

Rondo becomes the Bulls’ replacement at point guard for Derrick Rose, the former NBA MVP who was traded to the New York Knicks last month.

The Bulls become Rondo’s fourth

team in less than two years. Rondo spent his 8½ seasons in Boston, winning a championship with the Celtics in 2008.

The Celtics traded him to Dallas in December 2014, and Rondo spent last season in Sacramento.

Rondo averaged 11.9 points and an NBA-best 11.7 assists with the Kings.

Last season was the fourth in which Rondo averaged a double-double, and the first time he did so since 2012-13 – the last of his four All-Star seasons with the Celtics.

Rondo had at least 10 assists in 51 of his 72 games with the Kings last season, including two games where he finished with 20 – both of those against

Weigh weight-loss surgery carefully Dear Dr. K: I’m very overweight. Diet and exercise help a little, but then I gain it back. My doctor is recommending weightloss surgery. Does it really work, and how does it work?

Dear Reader: There are several types of weight-loss surgery (also called “bariatric surgery”). They work in various ways.

They shrink the size of the stomach: The stomach gets full more easily. They reduce the absorption of calories and nutrients in the intestine. Some types of bariatric surgery also lead to hormone changes that reduce appetite and burn energy more efficiently.

One procedure is called gastric banding, or “Lap-Band.” Gastric banding involves placing an adjustable band around the stomach to make it smaller. This restricts the amount of food you can eat and makes you feel full faster. The band can be tightened or loosened as needed, depending on how quickly you are losing weight. This surgery is done laparoscopically, through small incisions, using smaller instruments.

Another common weight-loss surgery is known as gastric bypass, which shrinks the size of your stomach. It also reconfigures your small intestine so food bypasses most of your stomach and the upper part of your small intestine. As a result, your body absorbs fewer calories. Gastric bypass can be done through open surgery or laparoscopically. Weight-loss surgery can dramatically: • Reduce blood sugar levels • Lower blood pressure and cholesterol • Improve sleep apnea • Improve heart function • Reduce symptoms of acid reflux (GERD) • Reduce urinary stress incontinence But it’s not for people who need to lose just a few pounds. Don’t think of weight-loss surgery as an easy fix. You must make a lifelong commitment to healthy eating to achieve lasting weight loss. Without this lifestyle change, surgery will either make you miserable or not result in weight loss. And most likely, both.

I’m sick when I read about girls in great relationships who feel like they are trapped and they need to live life. They throw away a great relationship with someone who loves them. How is dumping someone who loves you “living?”

I met my husband in high school, and we went to parties, nightclubs and traveled – always together. We had each other’s backs and pushed each other to achieve what we wanted.

And the best part was, I had my best friend with me during all of my greatest life moments.

Now, after 23 years of marriage, I hear stories from my women friends who dumped their guys to live it up and now wish they never had.

They ALL said: “Guess what you get with a onenight stand? You get left with disappointment because the guy doesn’t know what you like in bed or gives you an STD.” And while they were “living life,” the boyfriend they loved and wish they had back found someone else.
