Save us all time, don’t merge until you have to Have you seen one of these diagrams that show a long line of traffic in one lane, and one car in another open lane that is about to close?

They draw an arrow or something pointing to the car that’s trying to merge, and say something like “if you do this, you’re [a jerk].”

That’s dead wrong. It’s encouraging us all to sit in unnecessarily long lines of traffic.

That is what happens in real life, too. So many people get into the lane that’s going to stay open way ahead of time, leading to a much longer traffic line than is needed.

Only a few brave souls refuse to fall in line, driving along in the open lane, and they’re often met with scorn by internet meme-creating people as well as drivers who refuse to let them in.

In reality, you should follow those people driving past in the other lane. There is nothing wrong with driving in an open lane of traffic. If they didn’t want you to drive in that lane, they would close it.

Some state departments of transportation are beginning to actually address this misguided groupthink. In both Washington state and Minnesota, the transportation departments are urging people to follow the “zipper merge.”

In the zipper merge, traffic continues in both lanes of traffic until the merge point, and then the vehicles take turns merging into one lane. This cuts down on traffic delays because the single-lane area starts as late as possible, not a mile early.

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson Drivers already know how to do this. It works like a charm when exiting crowded parking lots after a concert or major sporting event, for example. Do it with highway lane merges, too.

The real jerks in this scenario are the misguided vigilantes who drive in the middle of the road to block traffic flow ahead of the merge. That’s a traffic violation called improper lane use.

There’s also the people who tailgate the vehicle in front of them so other vehicles can’t get in. What’s the point in that? Letting another vehicle in has no practical effect on how fast you’ll get where you’re going.

So drive carefully out there this summer and let people in, will you please? It’s so much less stressful not to unnecessarily cause problems. Everyone will get where they’re going, and if we do things in a way that makes sense, we’ll all get there faster.

TRENTON, N.J. – Something to consider as you head to the beach or pool over the July Fourth weekend: That sunscreen in your bag may not protect your skin as much as you think.

Even after regulators updated standards for labeling sunscreen four years ago, tests have shown many provide far less protection than advertised.

That’s a worry because too much exposure

to the ultraviolet rays produced by the sun can lead to skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest type. The American Cancer Society forecasts about 76,380 new melanoma cases and about 10,130 patient deaths this year – good reasons for diligence.

“Even a single exposure increases risk of melanoma,” said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer at the American Cancer Society.

ksmith@shawmedia.com KIRKLAND – Katie Carlson is not only an aspiring commercial pilot with a penchant for dairy farming, but she’s also the 2016 Kirkland Fourth of July Queen.

Carlson, a recent Hiawatha High School graduate, and her sister, Emma Carlson, a soon-to-be Hiawatha High School sophomore, shared the stage Friday during the Kirkland Queen Pageant. Katie Carlson and each of the other four girls nominated for queen by their peers will ride front and center at Monday’s Fourth of July parade.

This year’s queen hoped she’d win, but when her name was called Friday, a look of giddy surprise swept her face.

“To be humble, everybody wants their name to be [called], but I was hoping for other people,” she said.

Competing alongside the Carlson sisters were Hiawatha junior Miranda Nelson, senior Madeline Dashney and recent graduate Nicole Young.

Last year’s queen, Casey Martinez, joined the girls on stage Friday before handing off her crown.

Both Katie and Emma Carlson have public speaking experience, and were proud of each other’s performance during the pageant’s ques-

tion-and-answer segment.

“She did really well; I’m really proud of her,” Emma Carlson said. “We participate in the Dairy Bowl competition for public speaking.”

Katie Carlson has plans to spend the next year at South Dakota State University to study aviation.

SYCAMORE – A group of vacation Bible school campers at Sycamore United Methodist Church got a special thank-you from the fire department after putting together 100 summer survival kits for families that rely on the Sycamore Food Pantry.

Community garden program seeks votes in national contest DAILY CHRONICLE

The competition is sponsored

The grant will be given to the organization that receives the most online votes before Tuesday. DCCG is asking for the community’s help by going to the Nature’s Path website and scrolling to the bottom of the first page to vote for the organization. Individuals can vote multiple times every day through Monday.

DCCG aims to end hunger and food insecurity in DeKalb County by providing access to fresh, local, sustainably grown organic vegetables for all who may be in need. DCCG manages more than 20 acres of growing space. In four growing seasons,

DCCG has produced more than 65,000 pounds of fresh food donated to local food pantries, day care centers, schools, community meal locations, senior citizen centers and housing units, as well as to the Meals on Wheels program.

In 2014, DCCG launched its Walnut Grove Vocational Farm program, an agriculturally centered training and educational opportunity for young individuals with special needs.

The organization also is creating the Annie Glidden Community Orchard and the Five Points Food Forest, and is working with partners such as the Northern Illinois Food Bank, DeKalb County, city of DeKalb and KishHealth System to create a Northern Illinois Regional Food Hub and Processing Center.

DCCG does not receive any state or federal funding; all of its work and programs are carried out by the support of the community in the form of donations, grants and fundraisers.

NIU will likely use the money to pay off expenses from the 2016 school year, more than paying for 2017 expenditures.

Additionally, the MAP money to come would reimburse the school for grants it covered for students during this past spring semester.

“As grateful as we are for [the] agreement, the financial situation for NIU and other universities across the state remains extremely delicate,” NIU President Doug Baker said. “This amounts to another short-term fix. As such, we cannot at this time relax any of the steps we have taken to tightly control spending, hiring and salaries over these last few years.”

Baker said the university would most likely again front MAP award money this fall.

Before Thursday’s budget deal, Kishwaukee College President Lori Borowicz said the school was preparing to proceed with fiscal caution. The college did not front students’ MAP awards last school year, and won’t be doing it this year.

However, the funding that the college will get will be helpful, Borowicz said.

“Kishwaukee College will receive critically needed resources to support our efforts to provide a quality education to the students that choose to attend our college,” she said in a written statement Friday. “The college strives to support the educational needs of our students and the workforce needs of local employers. More will now be possible with the additional resources provided by the state.”

“We believe that the stopgap budget is a positive step in the right direction, but understand that it is in no way a permanent solution to the financial challenges,” said Lisa Gonzalez, who took over Friday as director of the county’s health department. “At this time, we are working with state level partners to clarify what programs will be included in the approved stopgap budget.”

Three county road projects likely wouldn’t have started without the stopgap plan, said Nathan Schwartz, the county highway engineer. But now, not only are those expected to begin as scheduled, the motor fuel tax appropriations in the budget deal means local governments will be able to afford such items as road salt for this winter and sidewalk work next spring.

“That is a very significant piece of legislation that was passed, in order to keep local [municipalities] moving ahead,” Schwartz said.

DeKALB – Class will start on time for DeKalb County’s 17,000 schoolchildren, road projects will commence or continue, and local social service agencies could see some funding flow after Springfield lawmakers passed a stopgap state budget Thursday.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the legislation the same day.

The state had been without a budget for the entire 2016 fiscal year, which began July 1, 2015, and was poised to enter a second consecutive year without one without the stopgap.

The package of appropriations passed the state Senate, 54-0, and the House, 1054. It is designed to get the state through the November elections and the end of the calendar year, after which lawmakers are expected to come up with a comprehensive plan.

But local school leaders, including Sycamore District 427 Superintendent Kathy Countryman, said they will take the good news – for now. There was talk that public school openings statewide could be delayed if a budget wasn’t approved.

The plan approved this week authorizes 100 percent of the prescribed general state aid for schools, instead of the usual prorated amounts they have received in recent years.

“That would be something that we haven’t seen over the past few years,” Countryman said.

Although the pledge to provide schools the full amount of general state aid is good, District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller said the state might have made other budget decisions, such as reducing categorical grant funding the district receives for transportation and life safety expenses, to compensate.

“It has happened before,” Moeller said. “Whether it will happen this time, we don’t know. That’s just why we’re not jumping up and down saying all our problems are solved.”

Moeller said district officials would do a thorough analysis of the spending plan and use it to update their budget projections ahead of the next school board meeting on July 19. For the moment, he said he was cautiously optimistic it would bode well for the district.

CHICAGO – After a year and a half of bickering and unbending demands, Illinois lawmakers were moved to compromise on a stopgap budget by a powerful force: a high-stakes November election and an already-disgusted voting public that one legislative leader described as on the verge of “revolt.”

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation Thursday evening to keep the state government operating for six months and schools open for another year, a rare deal hammered out with Democratic leaders who control the General Assembly just days before Friday’s start of the new fiscal year.

The plan approved Thursday allows Rauner and legislators up for re-election this fall to head into the campaign season without the looming threat of shuttered schools, lost road construction jobs, utility shutoffs at prisons or further cuts to colleges and social service agencies.

The pressure to avoid those crises had grown particularly intense in re-

CHICAGO – Illinois’ experiment with medical marijuana has earned a boost thanks to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s approval of legislation extending the state pilot program for 2½ years and including two more medical conditions.

On Friday, medical marijuana advocates and experts called it a turning point that gives patients guaranteed access to the drug and provides confidence to those selling and cultivating it in the state.

Rauner signed the measure Thursday night.

“It’s a very good thing for us,” said Charles Bachtell, the founder and CEO of Cresco Labs, which holds cultivation permits in Illinois. “It’s somewhat of an endorsement of the state saying, ‘You’re doing the right thing. We like what we’re seeing from the pilot program and let’s

Crain’s Chicago Business, which endorsed the former private equity investor in his 2014 election, published an editorial last week titled “You’ve proved us wrong” that concluded, “By nearly every measure, the state is worse off since Rauner took office.”

Rauner wasn’t the only one taking heat. On Wednesday, dozens of Illinois newspapers ran front page

editorials demanding both sides get to work on a resolution, many with headlines such as “Enough” and “Do your job.” The national satirical news program “The Daily Show” aired a segment about the impasse, in which the reporter compared two legislators to “Muppets” characters and suggested – in impolite terms – that young people should get out of Illinois.

“To leave this building today without having some sense of accomplishment with respect to fundamental, vital services that we owe to citizens in Illinois would be atrocious,” House GOP Leader Jim Durkin said during Thursday’s votes. “It would be unacceptable, and the public revolt would be one which we have never witnessed before.”

The November statehouse election is seen as critical as Republicans look to pick up enough seats to end the supermajorities Democrats hold in both chambers. They see their best hope in the House, and the GOP already is spending heavily – bankrolled in part by millions from Rauner’s pocket – on ads bashing Democratic lawmakers they see as vulnerable.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – An Illinois man faces charges in Massachusetts that he tried to sexually exploit boys through online video games.

U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Carmen Ortiz said Friday that 31-year-old Zack Sawyer has been indicted on two counts of attempted sexual exploitation for soliciting two boys in western Massachusetts.

Prosecutors allege Sawyer used Minecraft as well as video games played on Xbox Live to communicate with at least eight boys, aged 10 to 13 years old, in Massachusetts, Illinois and Virginia.

Art Institute adds painting by 16th century master

CHICAGO – The Art Institute of Chicago has acquired a newly rediscovered work from a 16th century painter.

The painting is titled “Christ Carrying the Cross.” It was painted by Italian master Sebastiano del Piombo between 1515 and 1517. The museum announced Thursday the painting’s addition to its Italian High Renaissance collection.

The Art Institute has not disclosed what it paid for the painting, but credited London-based art gallery Colnaghi with its rediscovery. The painting hangs in Gallery 205 in the Art Institute’s worldclass collection of European painting and sculpture.

The artist painted several versions of the work. Others are displayed at museums in Madrid; St. Petersburg, Russia; and Budapest, Hungary.

WASHINGTON – Peeling back some of the secrecy of America’s drone strikes on suspected terrorists, the Obama administration on Friday said it has killed up to 116 civilians in counterterror attacks in Pakistan, Yemen and other places where the U.S. is not engaged in active, on-theground warfare.

The first-ever public assessment is a response to mounting pressure for more information about lethal U.S. operations overseas. Human rights and other groups quickly complained that the administration undercounted civilian casualties and called on the White House to release far more information.

The report by National Intelligence Director James Clapper said the U.S. conducted 473 counterterror strikes, including those by unmanned drones, between January 2009 and December 2015. He did not mention where the strikes occurred, but the Defense Department and CIA have pursued targets in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and Libya.

Strike at Taj Mahal casino raises fresh questions

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – A union strike against Atlantic City’s most vulnerable casino on the biggest moneymaking weekend of the year raised fresh ques-

tions about the future of the Trump Taj Mahal.

Local 54 of the Unite-HERE union went on strike Friday against the casino, which was opened in 1990 by presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump but now belongs to a different billionaire, Carl Icahn.

Icahn’s management team said the union seems “hell-bent on trying to close this property” and pointed out that he has spent $86 million keeping the Taj Mahal alive through bankruptcy and $150 million more improving the Tropicana, which he also owns.

Church shooting victims sue FBI over gun buy

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The FBI is being sued by survivors of the Charleston church shooting, who said federal negligence enabled Dylann Roof to buy the .45-caliber handgun he used.

Lawyers for three people who survived the attack and the estates of five who were slain inside the Emanuel AME Church said the FBI negligently failed to thoroughly check Roof’s background before he bought the gun last year.

If the agency had done its job, Roof’s prior drug arrest would have shown up, and the bureau would have denied his purchase, the lawsuits filed Thursday allege.

Different priorities for candidates in VP search The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Donald Trump wants a running mate who has what he lacks – political experience. Hillary Clinton is putting a premium on diversity as she searches for a No. 2.

Yet the presidential rivals are running strikingly similar processes for tapping their vice presidential picks: relying on prominent Washington lawyers to comb through the background of top contenders, seeking guidance from a small circle of trusted advisers and family members, and weighing their personal chemistry with prospects.

Trump, a wealthy businessman who has never held public office, is mulling a small number of political veterans. He’s seriously considering former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, according to people with direct knowledge of the vetting process.

“We’re vetting a lot of good people and we have a lot of interest in people that want to leave high positions and do this,” Trump said Thursday.

The presumptive Republican nominee appears less concerned about diversity.

His campaign chairman has said publicly that Trump is not interested in choosing a woman or minority for the sake of appealing to a particular segment of the electorate.

The confirmed contenders are all white men over age 50.

Clinton has said she wants a running mate who is well-prepared to become president. But Democrats say she’s also giving priority to diversity and has been weighing female, Hispanic and black candidates – a nod to the voting blocs Democrats need to win in presidential elections.

Top contenders for the Democratic ticket include Massachusetts Sen. New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, one of two black senators, also was being considered, though it’s unclear whether he is still in the running.

It’s rare that a running mate dramatically shifts the trajectory of a presidential race. Yet it’s still among the most important decisions nominees face during the general election and their choice is viewed as a reflection of their priorities and values.

Clinton has veteran Democratic lawyer James Hamilton overseeing her selection process, with input from longtime confidants John Podesta and Cheryl Mills. Clinton is expected to begin meeting with candidates herself next week, according to two Democrats with knowledge of the process.

Given Clinton’s decades in the public eye, her advisers don’t expect her selection of a running mate to change her

electoral prospects significantly. But one Clinton aide said it was important that her running mate help tell the “story” of her candidacy.

Clinton has increasingly said her campaign is about Americans being “stronger together” – a phrase intended to convey the importance of a diverse country fighting for common goals.

Aides who have worked in senior White House posts under President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton have also been emphasizing the need for personal chemistry, noting that a strained relationship between a president and vice president can be destructive in the West Wing.

Clinton and Trump face fast-approaching deadlines as they evaluate their choices.

Trump has said he plans to announce his running mate at the Republican National Convention, which kicks off in Cleveland in just over two weeks – but the campaign has also considered pushing up the date. A person familiar with Trump’s decision-making process said the one-time reality television star is weighing how to maximize the suspense of his choice. He might do it showbiz-style at the convention.

Attorney general wishes she hadn’t met with Bill Clinton

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Attorney General Loretta Lynch is expressing regret that she sat down with Bill Clinton while his wife is under federal criminal investigation, a chance encounter she acknowledges “cast a shadow” on the public’s perception of a case bound to influence the presidential campaign.

“I certainly wouldn’t do it again,” Lynch said of the meeting. For Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, the episode raised the risk that voters will see her anew as half of a power couple that makes its own rules.

Lynch hastened to add that she intended to follow the recommendations of career prosecutors on whether to file criminal charges at the close of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails, indicating that she would accept whatever decision is presented to her.

The attorney general’s remarks at a conference in Colorado were aimed at tamping down concerns that the investigation could be politically tainted or that Lynch, an Obama administration appointee, might overrule the findings of agents and prosecutors who have spent months looking into the possible mishandling of classified information on the private email server Bill Clinton Clinton used as secretary of state.

Lynch said she understood that her private meeting with Clinton aboard her plane in Phoenix might be seen as compromising the neutrality of the investigation, even though she said the chat was largely social and her department’s probe of Hillary Clinton was not discussed.

Asked what she was thinking in permitting the meeting to occur, Lynch said: “I completely get that question, and I think it is the question

of the day.”

The outcome of the investigation is likely to shape the presidential campaign, whether to Clinton’s benefit if she emerges unscathed or to Republican rival Donald Trump’s advantage in the event that she or anyone close to her winds up prosecuted.

Bill Clinton’s approach of the attorney general also could aggravate questions of trust that already hang over Hillary Clinton in the minds of some voters – even if she’s never charged. She has struggled through the campaign to overcome unease about her honesty even while she asserts that she is more trustworthy than Trump on issues that matter most to voters.

Trump tweeted that “Bill’s meeting was probably initiated and demanded by Hillary,” without offering evidence of that. “Does anybody really believe that meeting was just a coincidence?” he asked. The Clinton campaign declined to comment on Lynch’s remarks.

BRIEF Gunmen take hostages at Bangladesh restaurant; 2 dead

DHAKA, Bangladesh – As many as nine gunmen attacked a restaurant popular with foreigners in a diplomatic zone of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Friday night, taking hostages, killing two officers and wounding at least 26 people in a gunbattle with security forces, authorities and a witness said.

At least 35 people, including about 20 foreigners, still were trapped inside the restaurant, said kitchen staffer Sumon Reza, who was among more than 10 people who managed to run to the rooftop and escape. He said the attackers chanted “Allahu akbar” (God is great) as they launched the attack around 9:20 p.m. Friday, initially opening fire with blanks.

A huge contingent of security forces, wearing flak jackets and helmets, cordoned off the area around the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka’s Gulshan area. Resident Lutful Amin told The Associated Press he heard several explosions, the last of which went off around 10:45 p.m., about 90 minutes after the initial attack.

ISTANBUL – Attention focused Friday on whether a Chechen extremist known to be a top lieutenant in the Islamic State group was involved in the suicide attacks that killed 44 people at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport.

U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, told CNN that Akhmed Chatayev directed Tuesday night’s attack at one of the world’s busiest airports.

The CIA and White House declined to comment on McCaul’s assertion and officials said the investigation of the bombing is still ongoing. McCaul could not be reached for further comment.

Turkish officials also were not able to confirm Chatayev’s role. The Sabah newspaper, which is close to the government, said police had launched a manhunt for him.

McCaul said Chatayev’s whereabouts are unknown. The 35-year-old one-armed militant, who fought in Chechnya against Russian forces and their local allies in the early 2000s before fleeing to the West, was put on the U.S. list of suspected terrorists in 2015.

The state-run Anadolu Agency reported Friday that the Bakirkoy Public Prosecutor’s office had established the identity of two of the airport attackers, Rakim Bulgarov and Vadim Osmanov, and was trying to identify the third.

Other media reports have given different versions of Osmanov’s name.

Anadolu said Osmanov’s identity was determined through a photocopy of his passport, which he submitted to a realtor in order to rent a house in Istanbul’s Fatih district. Police were also trying to access information on a destroyed computer found in a trash bin near the house.

The Anadolu report did not provide the nationalities of the suspects. On Thursday, a Turkish official said the three attackers were from Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Thirteen people suspected of possible links to the attack were detained in raids Thursday in three Istanbul neighborhoods, officials said. The Haber Turk newspaper said 11 more suspects – all foreigners – were detained in a separate raid early Friday. A government official could not immediately confirm the report.

Thumbs down to increased burglaries Thumbs-down: To increased burglaries in DeKalb. The city has seen so many more vehicle break-ins this year that on Thursday, Police Chief Gene Lowery sent a news release pleading with citizens to lock their vehicles and secure their valuables out of sight. Through the first six months of 2016, burglary and trespassing to motor vehicles has increased 34 percent over the first six months of 2015, Lowery said. If you’re parking your car on the street, please take heed to this police warning, and if you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood, call 911 immediately. It could help to stem the tide.

Thumbs-up: To the reopening of Coltonville Road. On Thursday, the DeKalb County Highway Department reopened the road after a new bridge over the South Branch of the Kishwaukee River was completed. Delays in receiving needed steel beams and uncooperative weather led to the project lasting far longer than officials had intended, and the bridge was closed through the winter. However, the project will come in close to the $2.3 million budget and after more than 10 months, Coltonville Road is once again a viable connection between First Street in DeKalb and DeKalb Avenue in Sycamore.

Thumbs-up: To the imminent opening of DeKalb County’s small-business incubator. The county plans to use space in its Community Outreach Building in the county health complex at 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb for the new project. Five initial tenants have signed on.

The location may be a bit isolated, but the goal – to help small businesses and nonprofits by providing them affordable, adequate space as they get started – is an admirable one. We hope the first five incubator tenants – and those that hopefully will follow them – find success and eventually move out of the incubator and into permanent space in the community.

Thumbs-up: To growth in average incomes. An analysis of tax data by an economics professor at the University of California found that the average income for households outside the top 1 percent of earners grew 3.9 percent last year, to $48,768. The study found it was the best year for income growth since 1998. But ...

Thumbs-down: To widening income inequality. The same study also found that incomes for the top 1 percent of households grew 7.7 percent year over year, continuing to expand the gap between the wealthiest Americans and the rest of us, a state of affairs certain to be one of the key issues in the upcoming presidential election. Who will America choose to restore the middle class?

Thumbs-up: To the riders and volunteers who participated in Bike for MS: Tour de Farms last weekend. There were a lot of them – more than 1,500 bicyclists rode anywhere from 15 to 125 miles around DeKalb County and raised about $1.5 million for the MS Society, which funds research and services for people affected by multiple sclerosis and their families. This year marked a decade since DeKalb began hosting the event, and the fundraising totals make it clear it’s a rousing success. Thanks to everyone who participated to help the roughly 20,000 Illinoisans and 400,000 Americans who live with MS.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Refreshing to read about county’s incubator program To the Editor: In this age of totally dysfunctional government, how refreshing to see something positive in the morning paper!

I couldn’t have been prouder of local government, particularly DeKalb County, when I read of the opening of the new business incubator in the Daily Chronicle this morning.

I know how hard it is to take an idea, even a good one, and turn it into reality. I also know how much more courage it takes for a public body to take a risk and do anything other than hold meetings and make speeches.

Over the past five years, in response to numerous slaughters of its citizens, the U.S. Congress has introduced more than 100 gun control bills. They have passed zero. Most have not even been called for a vote.

Meanwhile in Springfield, laughable dysfunction has moved closer to criminal negligence as citizens

flee the state of Illinois for economic sanctuary elsewhere and schools prepare for Armageddon.

Will this effort be successful in the long run? No one can know the answer to that now, but for the record at least one local government can say it tried.

Hugs and kisses to the committee that had the idea and to the County Board for having the courage to act on it. If positive energy will make it work, their choice of Mary Supple to coordinate it will guarantee success.

Media must do better job questioning candidates

To the Editor: Campaigning for the presidency in our country again is raising the ugly head of character assassination, like that is the only problem facing “this sick nation” at the present time.

That is as distant from the truth as you can get, in my opinion.

Wouldn’t it be refreshing to see Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump appear on TV and be questioned by an honest, impartial news reporter who would ask them questions about the so many insurmountable problems I fear?

These are the kinds of questions I want so badly to hear both candidates’ proposed solutions to, and that is what the voter needs to hear. Not this baloney about Clinton owning the State Department or Trump’s business practices of the past.

I have not heard a decent line of questioning of either candidate as of yet. I myself believe the news media is mostly responsible as they are always searching for sensationalism at the cost of decent reporting, and the two candidates are partially to blame because I doubt that either candidate has a remedy for these problems that I know of.

How about all of you other voters?

If employers want to hire him, why tell them, “No”?

When Lisa Creason was 19, she tried to steal from a cash register at a Subway sandwich shop. She said she only stole because she needed food for her baby. Creason was caught and arrested, and she served a year in jail.

Twenty years later, Creason graduated from nursing school. But when she went to take the test that would allow her to get a nursing license, she learned that because she was once convicted of a “forcible felony,” her career path was impossible.

She said it felt as if the bureaucrats had told her: “I was meant to be in the hood, meant to be on government assistance.”

This is not a good message.

“Lisa is a great example of someone who has changed her life,” the Institute’s Kristina Rasmussen said this week. “She is reformed. She wants to be a productive member of

society.” It has been 20 years since Lisa committed her crime, “but government gets in the way of her pursuing her profession.”

The good news is “this year we got a bill passed and it will go to the governor. So there is hope for Lisa Creason.”

It’s hard to get rid of bad laws. It happens one reform at a time.

No one says that crimes these convicts committed don’t matter, but punishing them forever doesn’t help.

Rasmussen said, “You went to jail, you paid your debt to society. Coming out, how are we going to treat you?

“Are we going to deny you work that keeps you and your family out of trouble ... deny you that opportunity, and you turn either to a life of crime again or dependency?”

Why do states have so many restrictions?

“There are two forces at work,” Rasmussen said. “One, government bureaucrats like being busybodies, deciding who gets to do what.”

They think that makes the world safer. But there’s another factor.

“You have people who don’t welcome competition,” Rasmussen said.

Existing businesses and unions don’t like newcomers on their turf.

“Who’s easier to kick out of the pool of potential competitors than people just emerging out of the criminal justice system?”

Existing businesses – the insiders – fund politicians who pass rules that make it hard for newcomers to compete with them. The politicians convince themselves that their rules protect customers. But mostly, their rules protect the insiders.

But some competing businesses want to hire ex-cons, and when that works out, it’s good for the businesses, their customers and the ex-cons.

A Chicago suburb diner called Felony Franks hires only ex-felons, its policy being “that once a person has paid their debt to society after being convicted of a crime, that he or she should have the same rights and opportunities as others.”

Of course, some ex-cons can be trusted while others cannot. But it’s important to let employers and customers make those calls – not a controlling, insider-protecting onesize-fits-all government.

What U.S. can learn from Brexit

There are lessons for the U.S. from last week’s Brexit vote across the pond. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, has has tapped into the same populist sentiment here that caused British voters to cast ballots in favor of leaving the European Union.

The consequences could be just as frightful.

Here are three common manipulations.

1. Grabbing attention with populist appeals, the simpler the better.

Brexit supporters, led by former London Mayor Boris Johnson, promised that going it alone would produce a quick remedy to all that ails the United Kingdom. No more immigrants taking jobs. No more edicts from faraway Brussels. Prosperity all around.

If this sounds familiar, it should. It mimics the most simplistic populist talking points of the Trump campaign. A wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and Mexico will pay for it. A ban against Muslims entering the U.S. We’ll have so many good trade deals that you couldn’t stand the winning.

If a solution seems too simple, it probably is.

2. Contempt for practical questions.

Economists warned of the folly of fleeing the EU. Breaking up a powerful trading bloc at a time when the rest of the world is seeking new trade alliances made no sense, they said. Financial markets would crash, billions of dollars would be lost. The EU and UK would be thrust into a period of grave uncertainty.

And guess what? It is happening and some voters are having buyer’s

remorse for having purchased a pipe dream.

3. Ridicule of experts.

Brexit supporters peddled magic beans, portraying anyone who questioned them as elitist and clueless.

When pressed, Michael Gove, a pro-Brexit member of Parliament, offered this troubling response that has echoes of Trump: “I think people in this country have had enough of experts.”

Sound familiar? It could have been lifted from Trump’s playbook where doubters are automatically labeled “losers” and “haters.” Memo to voters: Any person who stokes anti-establishment rage without regard to practical implications is dangerous.

It’s important to remember that elections do have consequences.

Prime Minister David Cameron

didn’t have to call the election. In doing so, he misread the tea leaves and gave a significant toehold to the pro-Brexit camp in a referendum.

Now the future of the EU and the UK are in limbo.

Ditto to the GOP leaders here who said primary voters would never nominate a man as bombastic as Trump. They, too, misread the tea leaves. Now the GOP is badly fractured with a candidate many in party leadership want to disown.

Just got out of jail? Odds are that within five years, you’ll get caught doing something illegal and go back to jail.

This is bad for ex-cons, their victims, their families and America.

Some of these people, of course, are career criminals who ought to stay in jail. But most are people who deserve another chance. They are more likely to stay straight if they find work. Work gives people purpose. It fills the idle hours that get many people into trouble.

But America makes it extra hard for ex-cons to find work. Some states make it illegal.

Illinois bans ex-convicts from more than 118 professions.

I understand why people might not want ex-cons to be bank security guards or cops, but in many states (Illinois isn’t unusual) the list of forbidden jobs goes way beyond that.

The Illinois Policy Institute, a free-market group that tries to get these laws tossed out, reports that ex-cons must give up on trying to become a nurse, architect, interior designer, dance hall operator, teacher, dietitian, acupuncturist, cosmetologist, buyer of slaughtered livestock, geologist, etc.

KEEPS ON TICKING FORMER BARB PLODS FORWARD AFTER A NEARLY DEVASTATING HOCKEY INJURY

D

eKALB – The doctor told Jared Johnson he might never play sports again.

After a horrible injury during a hockey game when he was 13, the DeKalb graduate not only returned to the ice, but he kept his athletic career alive by recently signing to play baseball at Central Methodist University (NAIA) in Missouri after two successful seasons at Kishwaukee College.

“I like challenges and I’m that gritty guy, so the biggest thing was to overcome this obstacle,” said Johnson of his injury, a broken right leg. “I’ve never had something like this in my life.”

Johnson’s life always revolved around hockey and baseball.

When he was 16, he moved to live with a family friend outside Madison, Wisconsin, where he played for the Madison Capitals, a AAA boys hockey program that was coached

by Bob Suter, hearing stories from him about winning the gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics as a member of the Miracle on Ice team.

However, playing for the Rockford Hockey Club three years earlier, Johnson found himself in a compromising position after controlling a loose puck while his team was undergoing a line change.

“I remember seeing their whole team coming at me and I’m the only one out there with the puck,” Johnson remembers. “I’m carrying it up the ice and I see three or four guys coming at me, and, of course, it’s the biggest one coming at me. I chip it and brace myself and we had a really good collision, I’d say. He got a concussion and all I remember is I tried to get up and my leg snapped out from under me. I blacked out.”

It was a broken right femur, but the team doctor originally diagnosed it as a hyperextension. Instead of rushing to the hospital, he walked out on crutches. Like a cartoon character that always finds a way to get hurt, the aftermath wasn’t kind for Johnson.

“I’ve never used crutches in my life, so walking out I fall face-forward,” Johnson said. “It was bad.”

Johnson spent the next two days not knowing his leg was broken

– even going to his team’s contest the next day and attending a Blackhawks game, crutching his way up the stairs to his 300-level seat. When the pain never relieved, needing to sleep on a couch downstairs, Johnson finally went to the doctor and it quickly was diagnosed as a broken femur.

One of the few positives from the ordeal during the hospital stay was he was visited by then-Rockford Ice Hogs Corey Crawford (Hawks), Jake Dowell (Hawks), Jack Skille (Colorado Avalanche) and Mike Blunden (Tampa Bay Lightning).

The injury, which has left a long scar down the front of his right leg, also broke the growth plate, forcing doctors to remove the plate in his left leg, too. He now stands 5 feet, 7 inches tall.

Johnson, 20, said the doctor told him he might not be able to play sports, and if he did, it would take a year to recover.

He was back in six months.

“Some of those characteristics you don’t see much in kids anymore, Jared’s got them,” Kishwaukee College baseball coach Josh Pethod said. “He always has that edge to him.”

Instead, it was more heartache, and more what could have been.

The slow dismantling was quickened after the disappointment of this season, and now Rose and Noah will be elsewhere when the season tips off in October.

“When we looked back a year ago, I think you could see that it was coming to a close,” general manager Gar Forman said last week when asked about the “retooling” the team has undertaken. “But we didn’t have a lot of flexibility, and we wanted to give the group as was another year to see where we could go.”

Where it went was 42-40 under firstyear coach Fred Hoiberg, missing the playoffs for the first time in eight years.

As far as what the Bulls had going the first day of free agency, the focus seemed to be on keeping E’Twaun Moore in the rotation, but the free agent was being courted by a handful of teams, including Thibodeau’s Minnesota team.

The Bulls will move forward with Robin Lopez, Jimmy Butler and recently drafted Denzel Valentine, as they try to “retool” on the fly.

And of course there’s Gibson.

As often as he’s been the center of trade rumors over the years, he’s now the last man standing.

Bowman said. “I’m not going to say we won’t sign anyone else, but our main focus was to sign Brian. It’s important to have a strong group on defense, and I really like the mixture we have now.”

Campbell had six goals and 25 assists in 82 games last season with the Panthers, leading all defensemen in plus/ minus and putting up positive possession numbers. He led the Panthers in ice time with an average of 22:16 a game.

He already has spoken with coach Joel Quenneville, and is hoping he can be the second-pairing guy the Hawks need, likely paired with Brent Seabrook.

“I have a lot left in the tank,” he said. “I feel great. I felt like I had a really good season this past year, and over the past number of years. If I’m in a top-four role, great. If not, I accept whatever they give me and I’ll work hard. There’s no egos here. For me, it’s about doing what’s best to win.”

Notes: The Hawks placed defenseman David Rundblad on waivers for the purposes of a buyout. Rundblad has one year left on his contract and would carry a slightly smaller cap hit buried in the minors than if he is bought out, but Bowman said the defenseman was seeking a “fresh start.” ... Andrew Ladd signed a seven-year deal with the New York Islanders, worth an average of $5.5 million a season.

There’s still Taj Gibson.

At least for now.

But that’s it. Gibson is the last remaining piece of a core group that was built to end LeBron James’ reign, as well as restore the Bulls back to an NBA elite status they hadn’t seen since the Michael Jordan Era. Luol Deng? Traded behind coach Tom Thibodeau’s back during the 2014 season. Carlos Boozer? Amnestied when there were no takers on the final year of his contract. Derrick Rose? Traded to New York last week in a five-player deal.

Heck, even Thibodeau had a shelf life with this organization, fired after the 2015 season with two years and $9 million left on his contract.

And now Joakim Noah.

The big man is all but set to join Rose in the “Big Apple,” as a source close to the situation confirmed Friday that the two sides were on the verge of a verbal agreement that would pay Noah an average of $17.5 million a year for the next four seasons.

Noah then posted a picture of himself on his Twitter account wearing a Knicks hat.

That closes the chapter on Noah’s nine-year career with the Bulls, where he might not have been the team’s superstar, but he was its heart.

Who would have guessed the closest this group would get to reaching the mountain top came after Game 1 of the 2011 Eastern Conference finals, as they dominated James and the Miami Heat, 103-82, to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series?

James and Co. went onto win four straight, starting a domino effect of what was supposed to be a story of an up-and-comer, but instead turned into a Greek tragedy.

Rose’s knees went, and his teamfirst attitude soon followed. Then it was a series of missteps by the front office with the biggest coming when they tried to all but sabotage Thibodeau’s final season as coach.

CHICAGO – Brian Campbell is coming home.

Oh, sure, technically, Campbell is from Strathroy, Ontario, about halfway between Detroit and Toronto. But ever since his three-year stint with the Blackhawks from 2008 to ’11, Chicago has been his home. Not his second home, but his actual home. His wife is from Chicago. He lives in the area during the offseason. Even his agent is based in Chicago. And now Campbell is hoping to chase one more Stanley Cup in Chicago.

“I couldn’t be more excited to play for my hometown team,” Campbell said Friday after signing a one-year contract worth $2 million. “It’s where my heart is. It’s where I want to play.

Obviously, the last time I was a free agent, money played a factor in it. This time, it was about what’s best for me and my family.”

Campbell had other, more lucrative offers on the table, including a reported $5 million one-year deal to stay with the Florida Panthers. But the 37-yearold defenseman, who just banked $57 million during his last contract, made it clear he was willing to give the Hawks a discount.

“I wasn’t going to play for the league minimum, but I was definitely ready to take a lot less,” he said.

Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said Campbell would be the only high-level player the Hawks sign in free agency, thanks to a tight salary-cap situation. But it’s a significant one. Campbell solves two significant problems for the Hawks – he fills a glaring hole as the likely No. 4 defenseman, and he does it on the cheap. That’s the trump card Bowman always has to play, even when trapped by the cap – veterans see Chicago as an ideal place to play, and to chase the Cup. “It’s obviously an honor that guys believe in what we’re trying to do in Chicago,” Bowman said. “We’re certainly excited about that. I’m sure he had other opportunities. It speaks a lot to the kind of person Brian is. He’s a winner, he wants to win.”

By signing the smooth-skating puck-mover, as well as adding Czech defenseman Michal Kempny in May, the Hawks now have the kind of depth on the blue line they haven’t had since Johnny Oduya left for Dallas last summer.

Sox’s offense sleepy in Houston

HOUSTON – A trip to these parts in the heart of Texas brings back fond White Sox memories of a World Series championship in 2005. It also is a grim reminder of the Sox’s postseason futility since.

It has been 10 years already, and since then the Sox have reached the postseason only once, in 2008, and they bowed out in the first round of that one to boot.

Their 5-0 loss to the Astros on Friday night, on a day when the Sox watched a good portion of the Cleveland Indians’ 14th straight win in 19 innings from the visitors clubhouse Friday afternoon, left the Sox 9½ games behind the AL Central leaders. That’s a lead, even in early July, that will turn your attention to a less daunting but ominous task nonetheless – of somehow getting to the postseason via the wild card.

Problem for the Sox is, the Astros, Royals, Tigers, Red Sox, Blue Jays all are ahead of them for the two wild-card spots.

And a problem for the Sox is, on nights such as Friday when they get

innings, and the Astros’ bullpen did the rest to nail down the resurgent home team’s 13th win in 15 games.

“It was a tough one to swallow,” Gonzalez said, “but that’s part of the game.

[The batters] battled last time when I gave up eight runs. It’s going to be like that sometimes. We have to stay within ourselves – we have Chris Sale going [Saturday] and Jose Quintana (on Sunday), so we have to keep our heads up and keep grinding.”

Gonzalez retired the first nine batters he faced and encountered his first bit of trouble in the fourth by hitting leadoff batter George Springer with a 2-2 pitch. After Luis Valbuena walked, Jose Altuve, who batted .420 in June, broke his bat on a comebacker that Gonzalez turned into a double play with shortstop Tim Anderson.

With Springer on third, Gonzalez ran a fastball in on cleanup man Carlos Correa’s hands, but Correa’s soft, low pop toward shortstop dropped in the infield grass in front of a charging Anderson for an RBI single.

“Someone has to go all out for that play,” third baseman Tyler Saladino said.

That 1-0 lead held up until Carlos Go-

mez homered to left with Correa on first after first baseman Jose Abreu couldn’t catch Saladino’s throw from across the infield. Saladino was charged with an error on a ball that should have been caught.

Fiers was hit a little harder than Gonzalez was but escaped unscathed.

Avisail Garcia almost cleared the wall in left field in the second but settled for a two-out double that moved Brett Lawrie to third, but Saladino popped up to short center.

After Abreu hugged the third-base line with a leadoff double in the fourth, Todd Frazier (to left field), Lawrie (to third) and Garcia (to right) all lined out, leaving Abreu at second. Lawrie doubled with two outs in the sixth, but Alex Avila struck out.

“We couldn’t get anything going,” said Sox manager Robin Ventura, whose team was 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position. “That’s what was frustrating. We had opportunities but couldn’t get anything out of them.”

The Sox have won three straight series, so one loss isn’t deterring them.

“It’s just a matter of things clicking,” Saladino said. “You try not to beat yourself up over a loss.”

Sanchez recalled; Davidson has foot surgery

HOUSTON – The White Sox recalled infielder Carlos Sanchez from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday to take the roster spot of Matt Davidson, who had surgery on his right foot Friday in Chicago.

A screw was inserted to repair a fracture, and Davidson will be re-evaluated with a new X-ray in two weeks, at which time the Sox will determine a long-term plan for recovery.

Davidson, 25, injured the foot during his Sox debut Thursday running the bases after delivering his first hit, an RBI single during the fourth inning of a 6-5 win against the Minnesota Twins at U.S. Cellular Field.

Dr. Simon Lee, the Sox’s foot and ankle specialist, performed the surgery at Rush University Medical Center.

“I think everything he has been through, you almost can’t go there,” manager Robin Ventura said, alluding to Davidson’s up-and-down minor league career and recent success. “You can’t believe it. I feel bad for him.”

Sanchez, 24, was with the Sox for most of 2015 and from April 28 to May 22. He was 4 for 26 with one RBI this season in 11 games, including four starts. At Charlotte, he was batting .258 with six homers, 11 doubles, two triples and 24 RBIs in 55 games. A switch-hitter who plays second base, third base and shortstop, Sanchez was 8 for 21 over his past six games with the Knights.

Frazier and the Derby: If Todd Frazier is invited to the Home Run Derby in San Diego next week to defend his title, Ventura will give his blessing.

“I don’t think that’s going to hurt him at all,” Ventura said.

“If he wants to do it, I’d let him do it.”

Frazier won it as a Cincinnati Red at Great American Ballpark, but is probably not going to make the American League All-Star team despite being tied for the AL lead with Mark Trumbo with 23 homers to go with 51 RBIs going into Friday. Frazier was batting .203 with six doubles through Thursday.

Saladino at third, Frazier DH: Ventura likes the way Frazier, who has struggled to hit for average all season, has swung the bat of late. He had six hits in his past 23 at-bats before lining a single in his first at-bat Friday against the Astros.

“His swing has looked better, even his BPs look better, a little more direct to the ball with his barrel,” Ventura said. “That’s a good sign.”

Frazier was the designated hitter for the second time, with Tyler Saladino playing third. Saladino is a plus defender who was batting .304 on the road and .324 with runners in scoring position.

“The best thing is that Fraz gets off his feet a little bit,” Ventura said. “He’s played hard, he’s played great and he kind of throws his body around a little bit. It’s good to have that [option to use him as a DH] or for Jose (Abreu) to have it, as well (with Frazier moving to first base).”

Still sore: Melky Cabrera (right wrist sprain) wants to play but is likely out through Saturday, with a Sunday return possible.

MLB pulls plug on pitchers bracket in HR derby

NEW YORK – The man on the cover of ESPN magazine’s annual Body Issue won’t be hitting in any home run derbies this month, with or without his clothes on.

After briefly considering a pitchers bracket for the All-Star Home Run Derby, Major League Baseball decided against staging the oblique-strain watch – at least this year – sources said.

“Bumgarner’s scared,” Arrieta cracked. “He doesn’t want to finish second.”

Arrieta and Madison Bumgarner, the Giants’ ace, were the most vocal advocates for a homer derby for pitchers, with Bumgarner – who was allowed to hit for himself Thursday in Oakland instead of the Giants using a DH – trying to get into the actual derby.

“That’s just foolish,” said Arrie-

ta, who’s hitting .294 and tied with Bumgarner and the Mets’ Noah Syndergaard for the MLB pitcher’s lead at two homers. “I love Madison, but let the position players do that.

“But if he wants to go toe to toe, I’ll give him a run for it.”

At least until next year Arrieta will have Jake Arrieta to settle for pitching matchups – and making his other impacts on magazine covers.

Photos from his ESPN shoot in the desert during spring training were unveiled Friday ahead of the July 6 issue, showing him naked in various pitching poses. Arrieta, one of 19 athletes included in the issue, is featured on one of the regional covers.

“It’s a pretty cool honor,” he said.

“Some of the pictures have circulated.

They look good. From what I’ve seen they did a great job.”

Asked if he’d ever pitched in the nude before, Arrieta said, “Just in front of my wife in the room, just doing some dry drills.”

“It didn’t feel normal,” he added “but that was the scenario, and I just went with it. It was fun.”

As for whether he left himself exposed to a magazine cover jinx, “I guess we’ll find out,” he said.

Warren ready for start: After throwing 73 pitches over five innings for Triple-A Iowa in his second minor league start Thursday, right-hander Adam Warren is poised to join the Cubs’ rotation for a spot start, probably Tuesday or Wednesday at home against the Reds.

The Cubs planned the start to give the five starts an extra day during a stretch of 24 games in 24 days. And the club is considering looking for a spot

on the other side of the All-Star break for another spot start for Warren.

“Overall, he pitched well, and everybody liked his stuff,” manager Joe Maddon said of Warren’s outing, which included three strikeouts without a walk and a two-run homer by former Cub Justin Ruggiano.

Tidbits: After playing a fourth minor league rehab game Friday night, infielder Tommy La Stella (hamstring) was to be evaluated for a possible return from the DL as soon as this weekend in New York, Maddon said. … Leadoff hitter Dexter Fowler, who has been on the DL with a hamstring injury for almost two weeks, is not recovering as quickly as anticipated, Maddon said, and could be facing a return after the All-Star break. … Jason Heyward was back in the lineup as expected Friday after taking time the previous two days to rest a sore left side.

On a night all of New York’s CitiField seemed to be leaking, with almost two hours worth of rain delays, Jason Hammel got rocked in the worst performance by a Cubs starter this year as the Cubs lost for the eighth time in 12 games.

Hammel gave up five home runs in a 10-2 loss to an injury-depleted Mets team that had lost four straight games entering the series – having scored two runs in their previous 24 innings.

It would have been the worst pitching performance of the season for a Cubs starter, even if Hammel hadn’t been left in the game four or five batters longer than he otherwise might have been if manager Joe Maddon hadn’t been trying to ease the load on his bullpen.

As it was, he lasted only three batters into the fifth inning – two of them hitting home runs – as his ERA skyrocket-

downs and injury-influenced hitting snags that could point to depth issues – at least compared to some of the other top teams in the league.

The Cubs will wake up Saturday morning still in possession of the best record in the majors – but with a losing record in their past 25 games (1213). That includes a 5-10 mark in that stretch against winning teams.

And that includes the first two in a four-game series against what had been a reeling Mets team. Mets starter Jacob deGrom on Friday won for the first time since April because of more runs scored by his team in one night than it had scored in his six previous starts combined.

After Thursday’s late-inning loss in the series opener, veteran starter John Lackey scoffed at the idea of putting significance on games in June (and, presumably July 1).

“Big-boy games are totally different,” he said.

Maddon, who awaits the returns from the DL of leadoff man Dexter Fowler and key bench bat Tommy La Stella, also downplayed the slump.

“I’m very happy with where we’re at,” he said. “We talked about getting off to a good start so that we can absorb

LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. – Buddy Ryan was remembered not only as a defensive master who won two Super Bowls and spawned a legacy carried on by players and twin sons now coaching in the NFL. He also motivated players with a gruff but caring approach that helped them succeed on the field and in life. Ryan had his players’ backs no matter how tough and demanding he seemed, a loyalty noted and reciprocated by many of his pupils

who traveled far to pay their respects Friday.

“The thing I loved about Buddy is that everybody got the same treatment,” Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary said during a 20-minute eulogy at St. Lawrence Catholic Church that ended with an emotional pause.

LONDON – Dismayed at dropping the first set after being a single point from taking it, Serena Williams sat in her Centre Court sideline chair and cracked her racket against the turf once, twice, three times, four.

Then she casually flung the racket, hurling it so far behind her that it landed in the lap of a TV Serena cameraman filming Williams her second-round match against 65th-ranked American Christina McHale.

Williams recovered to force a third set, only to fall behind yet again Friday, perilously close to what would have been the sixtime champion’s earliest exit in 17 Wimbledon appearances.

But as she herself declared afterward: “Mentally, no one can break me.”

Eventually, the top-ranked Wil-

liams did indeed come through, edging McHale, 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-4, for a thrill-a-minute victory at a tournament so rain-drenched this week that matches will be scheduled on the middle Sunday for only the fourth time in 139 years.

The dramatics of Williams’ match, which concluded with the main stadium’s retractable roof closed, were equaled by those of her older sister Venus: She had to wait out three rain delays, including one of more than an hour that arrived, of all times, right as she held a match point. But Venus, owner of five titles at the All England Club, persevered, too, barely getting past 29th-seeded Daria Kasatkina, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8, to become one of only two women already into the fourth round.

“You see a winner go by you, and a lob go in, and you’re like, ‘My god, what’s next?’ ” said Venus, who at 36 is the oldest woman in the field and has played about 61/2 hours of tennis in the past two days, including singles and doubles.

Continued from page 18 Johnson’s path after the injury was taking him in two different directions – the ice rink and the baseball diamond. He spent the winter scoring goals as a right wing. In the spring, he became a standout shortstop for the DeKalb baseball team. As a junior in 2013, he hit the first home run at Dave Pettengell Field, a shot to left field on a cold Saturday morning against Rockford East.

He talked with teams such as Ohio to possibly walk-on as a freshman, but Johnson stayed home and played two years at Kish, instead. After hitting almost .420 as a freshman, he hit .381 with five home runs, 16 doubles and 43 RBIs as the Kougars’ No. 2 hitter this past season. The offers began to come in – between 20 to 25 of them – before he narrowed it to four. He had offers from top NAIA schools such as Central Methodist, Bellevue University (Nebraska) and Tabor College (Kansas) and Division I Tennessee-Martin.

In the end, the full-ride offer from Central Methodist and a persistent coaching staff helped him make his decision, along with some help from his dad, Gilbert.

“My dad gave me a lot of advice and he said he’d take the money and run,” Johnson said.

It’s tough for Johnson to compare hockey and baseball. He laughs that after scoring a goal he’s allowed to go crazy, but after hitting a home run, he has to act like he’s been there before. He’s spent his life playing against hockey players who eventually made it to

the NHL, while practicing baseball almost every day.

When asked if he feels like he made the right decision to choose baseball over hockey, there is silent pause before the answer.

“I still don’t know if I’ll ever know if I ever made the right decision,” Johnson said. “It’s one of those decisions you have to live with and move forward.”

OMAHA, Neb. – Matching each other stroke for stroke, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte surged to the wall in almost perfect sync.

Phelps got there first, just ahead of the guy who’s pushed him hard for more than a decade.

It was like so many races they’ve had before.

There’s one more to go in Rio. In the latest epic of their longtime rivalry – and billed as the Michael last showdown in their Phelps home country – Phelps edged Lochte in the 200-meter individual medley at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials Friday night.

“Ryan and I always have a great race with one another,” said Phelps, who plans to retire again after his fifth Olympics. “When we race each other, we bring each other to a different level.”

Phelps led from start to finish, but Lochte was right with him all the way.

In fact, he seemed to pull even midway through the final lap, but the most decorated athlete in Olympic history managed to get to the wall in 1:55.91.

Lochte was next at 1:56.22 and had no complaints about the consolation prize: his only individual race at the Olympics.

“I knew going into this race it was definitely going to be a dogfight to the end,” Lochte said. “It’s been a long journey, but the journey’s not over. We still have another month to get ready and show the world that the U.S. is No. 1.”

Lochte, an 11-time medalist, injured his groin on the first day of the meet, struggled in his next few races and was down to his final chance to get a swim of his own at the Summer Games.

Now, that’s out of the way, which means Phelps and Lochte will get another crack at each other in South America.

As a three-time defending gold medalist in the 200 IM, Phelps will be the favorite.

Walk-in clinics are convenient Dear Dr. K: What do you think of the walk-in health clinics that are popping up? Can I use them instead of going to my regular doctor?

Dear Reader: You ask a timely question.

More and more Americans are turning to retail health clinics – walk-in medical facilities located in storefronts, pharmacies, grocery stores and retailers. As of late 2015, there were more than 2,000 of them in the United State.

My one-sentence answer to your question is it’s a shame they have become necessary. That’s because I believe the best answer is for every person to have a primary care physician who knows them, and to bring all health problems to that doctor.

So why are people going to these walk-in clinics? The most obvious reason is we haven’t trained enough primary care doctors, and the ones we have are very busy. As a result, patients must wait longer for an appointment to see a doctor, even for simple problems.

No one likes to wait. Walk-in clinics typically will see you without an appointment (although you often won’t be seen immediately). Also, walk-in clinics frequently are open nights and weekends.

If you’re hurting and your own doctor is not available, retail health clinics have their place. They are most appropriate when you have a simple health condition that needs immediate medical attention – a respiratory or urinary tract infection, for example. But it’s important your medical record from this visit reaches your primary care doctor, and that often doesn’t happen.

Walk-in clinics like to call themselves “convenience clinics.” They’re convenient, unless you have to wait a long time in the waiting room. However, they often don’t know anything about you and your health.

And if your doctor isn’t informed about the care they give you, that’s not good for you or your doctor.

One sensible agreement is that the opening three-no-trump bid guarantees 4-3-3-3 distribution, so responder can transfer into a fivecard major safe in the knowledge of at least an eight-card fit.

South sort of starts with 10 top tricks: three spades, one heart, five diamonds and one club. But how can he get into the dummy to cash the spade queen and diamond 10?

He could win the second or third heart, cash his spade and diamond winners, then lead a low club toward the dummy. But that backfires here because West wins that trick and cashes the rest of his hearts to defeat the contract.

It is common sense that you do not want to bank your contract on the location of one card, if you can help it. After winning with the heart ace on the second round of the suit and cashing those six pointed-suit winners, South should lead his heart 10.

West wins that trick and takes two more heart winners, but then must either play a spade to dummy’s queen or lead away from his club king.

It is a textbook endplay.
