The 56 men who signed off July 4, 1776, on a document saying that their 13 colonies were really independent states and that they “hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal” were radicals.

Revolutionaries are always radicals. In this case, they proposed to defy one of the foremost imperial powers of the world, and face down a professional army and the most powerful navy of the time with nothing but homegrown militiamen.

Their success after more than seven years of war is proof of how radical ideas can become, with time, accepted as perfectly rational.

Several of the signers of the Declaration of Independence themselves were former loyalists who finally saw the wisdom in fighting for freedom. But even after years of having unfair taxes foisted upon them and their right to self-governance taken away by imperial Britain, and despite the threat of violence or tarring and feathering by patriot colonists, about 20 percent of Americans remained loyal to King George III before and through the war.

For them, breaking away from the British Empire still was too radical a concept to embrace.

around to the cause of revolution? I like to think I’d have been an early adopter, someone who would have been appalled at the Boston Massacre of 1770. Maybe I’d have worked up a pamphlet about it and passed out a few copies.

But loyalty to the country of one’s roots can be strong, and the prospect of serving in a war in one’s homeland is not terribly attractive to a man with a family. It might have taken more to push me.

Eventually, I hope I’d have sided with the radicals. The world is a better place because they carried the day in the colonies, even if we’re still striving to fully live up to some of the radical notions that idealists like Thomas Jefferson committed to writing back in 1776.

BALTIMORE – After spending 16 years in prison for the killing of his former high school girlfriend, a man at the center of popular podcast “Serial” has a chance at freedom.

Retired Baltimore Circuit Judge Martin Welch ruled Thursday that Adnan Syed, 35, deserved a new trial because his lawyer didn’t challenge testimony in the case that became the focus of the podcast, which captivated millions of listeners around the world.

Syed was convicted in 2000 of murdering Hae Min Lee a year earlier and burying her in a shallow grave in a park in northwest Baltimore. He was sentenced to life in prison.

During a post-conviction hearing in early February, Syed’s attorneys argued he deserved a retrial on the grounds that his original attorney, Cristina Gutierrez, did not contact Asia McClain Chapman, an alibi witness who said she saw Syed at the Woodlawn library about the same time prosecutors say Lee was murdered.

Additionally, Syed’s current attorneys argued cell tower data linking Syed’s phone to the burial site on the day of Lee’s murder was misleading because it was presented to jurors without a cover sheet warning that incoming call data was unreliable.

In Welch’s order, he disagreed that Gutierrez erred when she failed to contact Chapman, or that prosecutors breached their duty by withholding exculpatory evidence. But Welch did agree that Syed’s attorney provided “ineffective assistance for the failure to cross-examine the state’s cell tower expert about the reliability of cell tower location evidence” that placed him near the burial site.

The state had argued that because Syed didn’t raise the issue of his trial attorney’s failure to cross-examine the state’s cell tower expert in a prior proceeding, he waived his right to make it an issue now. But the judge ruled that Syed didn’t “intelligently or knowingly” waive his right to raise the issue, noting that he never completed his high school degree.

Theatre Historical Society of America makes tour stop at Egyptian

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Egyptian Theatre is comfortably familiar to many locals, which can make it easy to forget that the historic building really is a rarity.

Members of the Theatre Historical Society of America taking the place in for the first time marveled at the DeKalb treasure on Thursday.

“This is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind theater that doesn’t exist anywhere else,” said Richard Fosbrink, executive director of the Elmhurst-based nonprofit organization.

Executive director of the Theatre Historical Society of America enthusiasts rolled into the city Thursday, the first stop that day on their daylong tour of regional playhouses.

They have being visiting Chicago-area theaters since Tuesday. The excursions are part of the historical soci-

ety’s annual conference.

Fosbrink said the theater society has been touring venues nationwide each year since the 1970s. The membership includes U.S. residents and theater-lovers from other parts of the world. They have interests in different aspects of theater, ranging from decor to audio and sound systems, from the building and stage mechanics to flooring.

The interests are “very eclectic,” Fosbrink said. “But, in general, everybody that’s here has a love of theaters and historic theaters. They’re magic.

There’s just something special about them.”

The Egyptian was chosen as a stop because the organization’s conference is being held in Chicago this year, and some members had heard of the DeKalb theater. Alex Nerad, executive director of The Egyptian, also is a society member.

“It was a huge honor for us,” Nerad said of being a stop on the tour. “It adds a lot of credibility to what we’re doing here for a national organization like this to make it a priority to come out and visit us.”

Illinois OKs stopgap spending deal Rauner signs measure on last day of fiscal year

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers approved a partial spending plan Thursday that would ensure schools stay open another year and give colleges and human service programs funding for six months, a rare bipartisan accomplishment but one that won’t end the yearlong gridlock on a full budget.

The Democratic-led House and Senate overwhelmingly passed the plan, and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner signed it later Thursday, the last day of the fiscal year.

Democratic leaders and Rauner crafted the agreement after days of negotiations amid increased public pressure to avoid entering a second fiscal year without spending certainty. About a dozen Illinois newspapers used their front pages Wednesday to publish editorials demanding that the two sides strike a deal and stop the bickering that has led to layoffs at colleges and forced social service providers to close their doors or make cuts.

Before the 105-4 House vote, Democratic House Leader Barbara Flynn Currie acknowledged the plan doesn’t solve the state’s fiscal mess.

“It is meant to keep the lights on,” she said.

Illinois is the only state in the country without a full budget for this year.

In all, lawmakers are agreeing to spend $25 billion in state and federal funds for the current budget year, and another $50 billion for the upcoming fiscal year. Schools will get just over $11 billion to stay open for a full year.

The agreement also provides Chicago some relief on pension payments for teachers, an idea Rauner had resisted until Democratic lawmakers agreed to lower the amount they wanted.

But while schools and cashstrapped colleges and social service providers can breathe a sigh of relief, the partial spending plan also means both parties will face high-stakes elections in November to influence budget discussions in January when a new legislative session begins and money starts to run out.

He noted that even with the compromise, the ongoing budget standoff between Rauner and Democrats who control the Legislature will be an election-year issue.

“Mark my word that it will be articulated in the fall by various entities,” he said.

For 18 months, Rauner has demanded business-friendly, union-weakening laws as a condition for agreeing to a spending plan that would include a tax hike.

Democrats say the governor’s initiatives would hurt middle-class families and have nothing to do with the budget. The partial budget won’t solve that ideological divide.

While Rauner has not gotten his demands, he’s not giving up and said Thursday that November’s elections will determine whether his party has a greater voice to help him achieve what he wants.

“This election will largely determine that outcome,” he said.

Under the plan, schools are get-

ting over $500 million more in state aid than they did last year. There will also be a $250 million “equity” grant to help schools with low-income students. Chicago would get $100 million of that.

“Our schools will receive the most money in state history for the coming school year, through a plan that will help all Illinois schools without asking taxpayers to fund a Chicago bailout,” said state Sen. Dave Syverson, whose 35th District includes much of DeKalb County. “Our stopgap budget will ensure than important human service programs, road construction, and state operations can continue through the fall.”

Part of the deal includes passing legislation to allow Chicago to raise $250 million in property taxes to help with teacher pension payments.

A companion proposal will have the state cover $215 million in future pension costs beginning in June, like it does for all other Illinois school districts, but only if lawmakers pass legislation to reform the overall pension system next year.

Democrats initially wanted $400

million for Chicago Public Schools, including money to help make the city’s teacher pension payments.

The emerging plan calls for a $673 million increase for human services programs, including $20 million to restore programs that Rauner suggested eliminating.

There also is $1 billion for colleges and universities – about 85 percent of what they received the last time the state approved higher-education funding.

Various state agencies, including the Department of Corrections, are getting $709 million to cover operational expenses.

Even before the partial budget agreement, a large chunk of Illinois’ spending was on autopilot because of court orders requiring payments to Medicaid and state employees. Those court orders will continue, increasing the state’s debt.

Rep. Jack Franks, a suburban Chicago Democrat who voted no on Thursday’s funding measure, said it delays a long-term solution.

“I don’t believe there’s any profiles in courage today,” he said.

Man held without bond in child-rape case

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb County judge ordered a Shabbona man to be temporarily held without bond on charges that he repeatedly sexually assaulted two children younger than 13 over a period of three years.

Gary R. Hulthen, 72, of the 13100 block of Shabbona Road, Shabbona, faces 48 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child in two separate cases involving two different children. If convicted of charges involving

both children, Hulthen would be sentenced to natural life in prison by law.

Judge Philip Montgomery ordered Hulthen held without bond until a further hearing Gary R. on the matter Friday. Hulthen Assistant State’s Attorney Carrie Thompson told the judge that Hulthen had told police that he had assaulted a third child and that the investigation into that case was ongoing.

Police warn public about rash of vehicle burglaries DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Police are imploring the public to lock their vehicles as a wave of burglaries continues to sweep the city.

On Thursday, Police Chief Gene Lowery said the city has seen a 34 percent increase in incidences of burglary and trespassing to motor vehicles so far in 2016.

“In 2016 to date, we have made 23 arrests, the majority being juvenile offenders who have been linked to multiple incidents,” Lowery wrote in a news release. “The vast majority of the vehicles targeted have been unlocked with valuables of all sorts in plain view.”

Most of the incidents have occurred

between early-evening and early-morning hours, Lowery said. In recent weeks many of these crimes have occurred on the south side of DeKalb, the Greek Row neighborhood, and the Ellwood Historic District.

Police are asking vehicle owners to take the following steps to safeguard their property: • Make sure vehicles are secured by keeping windows up and doors locked, with items out of plain view.

• Place any items you wish to keep in your vehicle secured in the trunk or locked in the glove box.

• Call police immediately when you see suspicious activity – don’t wait.

• Pay extra attention to where your children are and what they are doing.

Prosecutors have filed a motion asking that Hulthen not be granted bond at all because he is a danger to children.

“There is no condition or combination of conditions that can reasonably assure that this defendant will not continue to have access to children and will not continue to commit acts ... with children,” Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein wrote in a motion.

Mary Bradshaw took lots of pictures as she walked around the building. She said she loves art deco and appreciated the theater’s artistic embellishments. Bradshaw, who lives in Dublin, Ireland, said that a number of the playhouses there have shuttered – never to return.

OBITUARIES FRED E. BOND JR. Born: June 23, 1947 Died: June 24, 2016

Fred E. Bond Jr., age 69, passed away unexpectedly on June 24, 2016 at his home.

Born on June 23, 1947 in DeKalb the son of Freddie and Beaulan (Carr) Bond. He graduated from Malta High School the class of 1965. Fred married Lousetta Hagen on August 25, 1982 in Sycamore.

He worked as a pipefitter/plumber for Union 612/130. Fred loved gardening and took pride in his yard. He was an avid reader and die hard Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. SYCAMORE – Highway workers on Thursday were busy removing the orange “road closed” signs that had been anchored in the ground for more than 10 months when the Coltonville Road bridge was reopened to traffic.

The bridge over the South Branch of the Kishwaukee River was closed in August 2015 and multiple weather-related delays led to the bridge being closed through the winter, with work resuming in March.

DeKalb County Engineer Nathan Schwartz said the final cost of the project was not yet available, but he expected it would come in around the $2.3 million bid price from Freeport-based Civil Constructors Inc. The project, which was overseen by the DeKalb County Highway Department, encountered difficulties from the start. Initially slated to begin in June 2015, work did not begin until August 2015 because of delays in receiving steel needed for the new bridge. Cold, rain and snow repeatedly brought work to a halt, and eventually the bridge had to remain closed with work stopped through the winter.

The prolonged closure of the bridge had angered some drivers who relied on the road as a useful link between First Street in DeKalb and DeKalb Avenue in Sycamore. Schwartz said the episode had led officials to make some adjustments in their future approach to bridge repairs.

For one, seasonal weather is simply not as reliable as it once was, Schwartz said, making late-summer projects ill-advised.

“If we have a project a little bit later in the year, we’ll just wait to start it in the next year,” Schwartz said.

Another change would be that the county will strive to do a better job informing the public about the progress and obstacles of projects, Schwartz said.

“We’re going to do everything we can to avoid a situation like this in the future,” he said.

Unemployment agency to expand help for jobseekers

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Employment Security said only a fraction of the people applying for unemployment insurance provide enough information for the agency to help match them with potential employers.

Starting July 17, the department will more vigorously enforce a requirement for all new applicants to register with the Illinois Employment Service and upload a résumé to the website IllinoisJobLink. com.

The department said in a news release it will help the unemployed get access to help including free job searches, recruiting, job matches, hiring fairs and workshops.

New applicants will have to complete a registration for those services before they will be able to receive unemployment benefits.

Galena soldier’s Purple Heart to be returned to family

GALENA – A Purple Heart earned by a Galena man nearly a century ago will be returned to his family.

The nonprofit Purple Hearts Reunited on Friday will present the medal belonging to Pvt. Harrison Boyd Virtue to his greatniece.

Virtue was born in Galena – 160 miles northwest of Chicago – in 1888. He enlisted in the U.S. Army infantry in 1918.

He was in France when he was injured by a German-launched mustard-gas attack.

He inhaled more fumes the next day and spent months recovering.

Virtue ran a moving company in Lynwood, California, after the war. He was presented with a Purple Heart in May 1941. He died in May 1961.

A member of Purple Hearts Reunited’s Valor Rescue Team procured the medal from an online memorabilia dealer.

Obama legacy: Immigration stands as most glaring failure

WASHINGTON – Hours after the Supreme Court sent his immigration policy into legal limbo, President Barack Obama huddled around a long conference table in the Roosevelt Room with disappointed activists. The president looked out at familiar faces, some teary. It had been a long and tough fight, Obama said, and he had taken some beatings – even from supporters who “whupped on me good.”

He believed his policies would prevail, according to participants in the meeting, but said it was now up to voters and the next president to take up the baton.

And with that, Obama delivered his version of a concession speech on a fight that has frustrated him like few others, roiled the campaign to replace him and is certain to test his successor.

When Obama leaves office in January, immigration overhaul will stand as the most glaring failure in his 7½-year effort to enact a vision of social change. Despite two campaigns full of promises and multiple strategies, Obama imposed only incremental, largely temporary changes on the immigration system. He leaves behind an outdated and overwhelmed system, with some 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally.

Behind that failure, Obama’s legacy will be judged by a sometimes contradictory mix of policies – some aimed at bringing immigrants “out of the shadows,” others at removing them from the U.S. He will be remembered for protecting 730,000 young people, a generation of so-called Dreamers, who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children. Advocates and allies will credit him with embracing a newly aggressive assertion of executive power that, despite the court deadlock and political opposition, remains a legal pathway for the next president. And he will go down

“Immigration is not something to fear,” Obama said last week. “We don’t have to wall ourselves off from those who may not look like us right now or pray like we do, or have a different last name.”

“What makes us Americans,” he said, “is our shared commitment to an ideal that all of us are created equal, all of us have a chance to make of our lives what we will.”

But Obama also will be remembered as a president who prioritized other issues, missing perhaps the best chance to pass sweeping legislation and only reluctantly adjusting his strategy in the face of firm opposition.

And his administration aggressively enforced current laws, deporting more than 2.4 million people. The total is nearly as many as his two predecessors combined.

“His strategy early on was to prove his enforcement bona fides,” said Janet Murguia, president of the National Council of La Raza, an immigration advocacy group, who once labeled Obama the “deporter-in-chief.”

“He was facing an unprecedented, highly personalized opposition from Congress,” she said. “We fault him, I believe correctly, for failing to

recognize soon enough this intransigence by Congress and failing to use his authority sooner.”

Evaluating Obama’s record is a matter of tallying two columns. One is the number of people he protected from removal. The other is the number deported.

The Supreme Court went a long way last week toward tipping the ledger toward the latter. With its 4-4 tie, it thwarted Obama’s last chance to shield up to 4 million people from deportation. The decision left in place an injunction freezing his 2014 executive action, which expanded his protection of Dreamers and temporarily protected some parents of people with legal status.

The deadlock, resulting from a Republican blockade against Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, left the constitutionality of the action unsettled. But it had a significant impact on Obama’s legacy.

“If the Supreme Court had ruled in his favor, he’d probably be remembered as the person who helped to protect half of the undocumented population in the country, which probably would have been a turning point toward reform sooner rather than later,” said Frank Sharry, founder of the immigration reform group America’s Voice. Instead, he said Obama will be most remembered for his administration’s “record number of deportations.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS ISTANBUL – As the death toll from the Istanbul airport attack rose Thursday to 44, a senior Turkish official said the three suicide bombers who carried it out were from Russia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, and Turkish police raided Istanbul neighborhoods for suspects linked to the Islamic State group.

Turkish authorities say all information suggests the Tuesday night attack on Ataturk Airport, one of the world’s busiest, was the work of IS, which boasted this week of having cells in Turkey, among other countries.

Police raided 16 locations in three neighborhoods on both the Asian and European sides of the city that sprawls across the Bosporus Strait, rounding up 13 people suspected of having links to IS. There was no immediate claim of responsibility by the militant group, which has used Turkey to establish itself in neighboring Syria and Iraq. IS repeatedly has threatened Turkey in its propaganda, and the NATO member has blamed IS for several major bombings in the past year in both Ankara and Istanbul.

Across Istanbul and beyond, funerals were held for the airport victims Thursday, and heartbroken families sobbed as they bid their loved ones farewell, including several local airport workers.

Nilsu Ozmeric wept over the coffin of her fiance, Jusuf Haznedaroglu, a 32-year-old airport worker who was fatally wounded while waiting for a bus to go home.

sobbed his mother, Cervinye Haznedaroglu, as visitors offered condolences.

A video obtained by the Turkish newspaper Haberturk purported to show a police officer asking one of the suicide bombers for identification before he was subsequently shot by the attacker. The video shows the alleged police officer, in short sleeves, approaching a man dressed in black.

The man in black then appears to shoot the officer, who falls to the ground. The Associated Press was not able to independently verify the location of the video or the sequence of events.

A Turkish senior official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because government regulations did not authorize him to talk to the media, said the attackers were from Russia and the Central Asian nations of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

A medical team was working around the clock to identify the suicide attackers, the official said, noting their bodies had suffered extensive damage.

Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Ministry denied that an attacker came from that country. Asked about the possible involvement of a Russian in the attacks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he had no information on that and there was no comment either from Uzbekistan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said between 5,000 and 7,000 people from Russia and other nations of the former Soviet Union have joined the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.

People from Chechnya and other provinces in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus region have had a visible presence among Islamic State fighters.

INDIANAPOLIS – A federal judge blocked an Indiana law Thursday that would have banned abortions sought because of a fetus’ genetic abnormalities, saying the state does not have the authority to limit a woman’s reasons for ending a pregnancy.

U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt granted a preliminary injunction requested by Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, which argued that the law was unconstitutional and violated women’s privacy rights. The law was set to take effect Friday.

North Dakota is the only other state that prohibits abortions because of genetic abnormalities such as Down syndrome or because of the race, gender or ancestry of a fetus.

Pratt said the Indiana law would go against U.S. Supreme Court rulings that have declared states may not prohibit a woman from seeking an abortion before a fetus is able to live outside the womb. She also said the state had not cited any exceptions to that standard.

“This is unsurprising given that it is a woman’s right to choose an abortion that is protected, which, of course, leaves no room for the state to examine the basis or bases upon which a woman makes her choice,” Pratt wrote.

The judge’s action, which is temporary, arose from a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana.

That case can still proceed.

The lawsuit also challenges the law’s provision requiring that aborted fetuses be buried or cremated. Planned Parenthood currently disposes of remains by incineration, as with other medical tissue. Pratt’s ruling blocks

the burial or cremation requirement from taking effect.

Republican Gov. Mike Pence signed the law in March after it was approved

by Indiana’s GOP-dominated Legislature. The measure was approved despite objections from many female legislators, including Republicans, who said it went too far.

The lawsuit was filed in April, and Pratt heard arguments from both sides June 14. During that hearing, Indiana Solicitor General Thomas Fisher argued that Indiana’s law was a response to DNA testing advances that permit fetuses to be screened for genetic defects or to determine their gender. He said the state has an interest in “preventing discrimination” against fetuses based on such test results.

Pence, a prominent abortion-rights opponent while serving in Congress before being elected governor in 2012, “remains steadfast in his support for the unborn, especially those with disabilities,” spokeswoman Kara Brooks said in a statement.

“The governor will continue to stand for the sanctity of human life in all stages, for the compassionate and safe treatment of women faced with an enormously difficult decision, and for the rights of citizens to determine appropriate medical safety standards and procedures through their elected representatives,” she said.

A prominent Indiana anti-abortion group urged the state to appeal Pratt’s decision.

“Today a federal judge denied the civil rights of unborn children, then proceeded to equate aborted children to common medical waste by blocking dignified disposal,” Indiana Right to Life President Mike Fichter said.

“This ruling is an appalling human rights injustice.”

A cautionary fireworks story Does the name Jason Pierre-Paul mean anything to you?

Given that this week marks the Fourth of July, it should.

Every year, you see warnings across the country about fireworks safety. We’re writing this to do the same. But this year, there’s a fresh reminder of why it’s so important.

Pierre-Paul is a starting defensive end for the New York Giants. He played last season with his right hand taped up like a club. The reason? He nearly blew off his entire hand while lighting fireworks at a party during the 2015 Fourth of July holiday.

More than 10 hand surgeries later, he’s missing all or part of three fingers and has needed multiple skin grafts on his palm.

We can’t think of a more visible reminder to leave fireworks to the professionals this weekend. Have a good time this Fourth of July, but be safe.

Of course, some of us may travel to other states where fireworks are legal, or decide to ignore our own laws forbidding their unlicensed use. In that case, here are some tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for individuals who plan to use fireworks this holiday season: • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

• Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign the fireworks were made for professional displays and could pose a danger to consumers.

• Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals.

• Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse.

Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.

• Never try to relight or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.

• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.

• Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.

• Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.

• After fireworks finish burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

• Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Property tax protests?

Really?

To the Editor: Eric Olson’s “Editor’s Note” on Tuesday, June 21, argued that property tax protests are needed. I take exception to his musing.

Specifically, Eric doesn’t address the logical consequences of his recommendation. Millions of people in the United Kingdom are having second thoughts about their protest voting to leave the European Union.

DeKalb residents who protest property taxes would – or should – regret their protestations when the consequences would be felt if property taxes were frozen.

Imagine if property taxes were frozen. “Oh, Happy Day,” you say?

Maybe for a few days. But, then as costs gradually rise and employees of the various property tax-supported entities ask for raises, what

should those entities do? Freeze all wages forever? Tell suppliers to continue their services and write off their increased costs?

“Let those entities tighten their belts,” you say? Sure, for a while.

But, eventually any “waste, fraud and abuse” would be eliminated.

School classrooms would be filled to capacity, irrespective of any student-to-teacher ratios. Sports, music and art programs would be eliminated. A shortage of teachers would develop as many of them leave the profession in order to make a living.

In short, school officials would have to choose between financial bankruptcy and educational bankruptcy. Similar reductions of services would be experienced in the areas of police and fire protection.

Parks and recreation departments would sell golf courses and other properties to real estate developers

for short-term operating funds. Libraries, mental health facilities, and other “nonessential” entities would be forced to close their doors.

Is this the world we want? Do we value the services and amenities that are available to us in DeKalb County? Or, are we just a bunch of “me-first” isolationists?

So, Eric, is this the scenario you endorse? If not, you should retract your encouragement of property tax protests and start a discussion of how to replace property taxes with other sources of revenue – without balancing that burden on the backs of the middle class.

Let me start that discussion with the notion that the only solution I can see is a progressive income tax for Illinois. Your thoughts?

“Grandma,” he said, his brow knitted with concern. “What are you going to do without me?”

We interrupt this cooking extravaganza so that Grandma can scurry off to the bedroom and bury her face into the skirt of her apron.

He is my first grandchild. He was the only one to lay claim to the title of “only” for nearly five years before our family’s baby boom would give him four cousins in three years. Until then, he had me all to himself. The best word to describe our mutual affection during that time: smitten.

We had our own habits, our own ways. By the time he was 3, one of our rituals involved my looking up at the ceiling as if I were pondering a question for the ages. “Hmm,” I’d say, “who’s the center of the universe?”

“I am!” he’d say, to the head-shaking groans of anyone within earshot who claimed to love us.

This was the child about to leave me – the child wise enough at age 6 to

see right through me. Two years later, his mother tells me he sleeps with my letters under his pillow. I cannot type that without pausing for a moment. The relationship between a child and a grandparent is the closest I’ve ever come to experiencing magic.

Here is where I admit I have set you up – maybe. My grandson and I are not what you might assume us to be. I did not meet his daddy until his daddy was 6, through marriage.

I was raising his father full time by the time he was 8. Ten years after my divorce, he walked me down the aisle to marry the man who is the love of my life.

If you were ever misguided enough to tell me that our beginnings mean he is not my son, our conversation would be brief, and I dare say you would not enjoy it. He is my son, and he has given me this miracle of a grandson.

That is only the beginning of this crazy tale of this family of ours. My husband and I brought two children each into our marriage, and we now have five grandchildren, period. Challenge this at your peril.

Why am I telling you all of this, you might wonder.

Well, it’s summer, which is that time of year when so many grandparents long to see the children they

love no matter what. No matter who is divorcing. No matter who brought them into the world. No matter who is angry with whom.

Children should not bear the burden of unfinished grudges. This is especially true now, when the briefest snippet of overheard news via TV or radio can make a child believe the world has lost its collective mind.

I’m not saying grandparents are perfect or that we’re even someone you’d choose for neighbors. But we are in this for your children. For so many of us, the moment we become grandparents, in whatever way that happens, something changes in us.

Your children become the center of our universe. Shouldn’t they know that? Shouldn’t all children, everywhere, get to feel that way at least once in their lives?

Everyone must fight together against ISIS There is a price to be paid for fighting terrorism – a price the people of too many nations, including our own, have paid in recent days.

This isn’t the first time Turkey has been the victim of terrorism. Two earlier attacks, both blamed on ISIS, the most likely suspect here, have targeted tourist areas of Istanbul. But the vast international airport in Istanbul has been among the most secure in the world, likely second only to Tel Aviv in its number of checkpoints.

more lives Tuesday, even as three suicide bombers attacked at those outer security checkpoints. Dozens of people were reported dead, another 60 injured and once again a nation grieves and the civilized world grieves with it.

“Our long summer of discontent has just begun,” a senior U.S. intelligence official told NBC News.

This particular act of terrorism was indeed exceedingly well-timed – intended no doubt to make an already jittery traveling public even more nervous at the height of the summer

tourist season.

But the attack also comes during a week in which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made two significant moves to restore fractured relationships with Israel and with Russia. Just Sunday, Ankara reached agreement to resume full diplomatic relations with Israel after six years of estrangement. Monday, Erdogan issued a letter apologizing to Russia for downing a jet near its border with Syria.

It should have been a good week for

Erdogan, who has spent too much time in recent days grabbing for power and losing sight of how best to drive his nation’s economic growth. This week he began to bring Turkey back into a family of nations that despite their differences remains united in the fight against the singular evil of our times – the kind of evil that targets the innocent among us.

There is no compromise with that kind of evil. There is only fighting it – together – in the same way we share the grief at our losses.

Two summers ago, my then-6-yearold grandson propped himself on a comfy chair and clasped his hands behind his head to watch me make a spectacle of myself in our kitchen.

I was performing, as if grinding 4 cups of fresh basil into pesto were the ceremonial equivalent of turning water into wine.

“Now, let us add the minced garlic!” I yelled over the food processor.

He pumped his fist in the air.

“Next, the lemon!”

“Woo-hoo!” he yelled.

This was to be our final big family dinner before my grandson and his parents whittled our numbers by moving far, far away to a new job awaiting his father – formerly known as my son, before he announced he was moving my grandson far, far away.

Away from me, I want to emphasize.

For my grandson, I was determined to be jolly.

I picked up the bottle of olive oil and raised it in the air. “And here we have the olive oil! Extra-virgin! Don’t ask what that means!”

He smiled.

I brandished the salt and pepper mills. “And must I remind our television audience that we only use freshly ground salt and pepper?”

In February, the Adult Education department at Kishwaukee College received a donation from a local philanthropic group, the DeKalb/Sycamore chapter of 100+ Women Who Care.

The $10,900 donation was used to fund Illinois High School Equivalency and English Language Acquisition (formerly English as a Second Language) classes offered by the Adult Education department at no cost to participants in local communities.

“The 100+ Women’s generous donation made it possible for us to reinstitute programming that had been cut or on hold due to the budget impasse in Springfield,” Tricia Wagner, director of Adult Education at the college, said in a news release.

“Our department is grateful on behalf of the community members whose lives have been changed for the better because these classes could continue.”

According to Wagner, the 100+ Women’s donation funded Adult Basic and Secondary Education and High School Equivalency classes focused on math and science content at Westminster Presbyterian Church in DeKalb; Advanced ELA classes and

In addition, the newly remodeled library allows for built-in technology resources and spacious meeting rooms. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).

Hiatt settling in as coach Expects to win immediately in a role he calls a dream come true

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Sure, Sam Hiatt takes over a DeKalb wrestling team that loses 10 seniors from the 2015-2016 team.

But not only are there a couple all-area wrestlers back in the mix, Hiatt gets the chance to do what he’s been dreaming about since he was 5.

A 2000 graduate of DeKalb and an assistant coach under Mike Pater for the past eight years, Hiatt was named the new coach in May and has hit the ground running this summer.

“I’m excited about the season already and it’s only June,” Hiatt said.

“I know we graduated a lot of our good wrestlers – and not only good wrestlers, but good kids with good grades. I think that we’ve got a young team, but have a lot of kids that love the sport. I expect to start winning right away.”

Hiatt’s relationship with the program predates before he even reached high school, participating in the Barbs youth program at a young age.

“It’s like a dream come true, really,” Hiatt said. “I’ve been a part of this program since I was 5 years old.

I know all about the pride, the traditions, the great coaches – there’s a lot of them. ... I’ve looked up to all those coaches, and now, with a chance to be one of those coaches, is a great opportunity.”

Hiatt steps in for Pater, who after 10 seasons decided to step down as coach but is still a teacher at the school.

“It was a no-brainer,” DeKalb athletic director Nic Kearfott said. “Sam has very high expectations, and he’s going to set the bar very high to make sure those kids push themselves to get there.”

Hiatt said he’s aware of the expectations around the program, and it fact looks forward to it.

NEW YORK – With the news Thursday that Clayton Kershaw is on the Dodgers’ disabled list because of a back injury, this week’s Mets-Cubs series might suddenly have something more tangible at stake than bragging rights or alleged revenge motivations.

Mets manager Terry Collins, who will manage the National League AllStars in the July 12 game, suggested Thursday he’s made his decision on the NL’s starting pitcher – with the Cubs’ Jake Arrieta and Mets’ Noah Syndergaard on his short list.

Arrieta (12-2, 2.10 ERA) starts Saturday, and Syndergaard (8-3, 2.49) starts Sunday – each with one more start just ahead of Collins’ official starter announcement July 11.

“There’s probably five really, really legitimate names who deserve to start the game,” Collins said before Thurs-

day’s opener of the four-game series at CitiField. “Clayton was one of those names. And I can tell you Jake was right near the top of the list. I kind of like my guy a little bit, too. “(Johnny) Cueto’s got great numbers, and (Madison) Bumgarner probably deserves a shot,” Collins added of the two Giants pitchers. “Certainly now with Clayton out of the mix, I’m just hoping that nobody else Jake Arrieta [goes down], because they deserve to be there, and people deserve to see them pitch.

“I kind of feel like I know who’s going to start the game, yeah.”

Collins rose from his seat almost as soon as those last words were out of his mouth and quickly left the interview room before anyone could get out a followup question.

For all his streaks, records and honors of the past year, it’s easy to forget this will be Arrieta’s first All-Star selection, wherever he gets slotted in the pitching plans.

But he said he no longer spends deep thoughts on how dramatically his career has turned for the better since being traded to the Cubs from Baltimore in 2013.

“I think I’m kind of over that,” he said. “I’ve addressed where I’ve come to this point. It’s a long way from where I used to be. I do understand that. But at the same time, I’ve put most of it behind me.

“It would be great (to start the AllStar game),” he said, “but most important to me is my start Saturday and then [six] days after that. If it happens, it would be something special.”

NEW YORK – Mets All-Star David Wright already is out for the year with a neck injury. Middle-of-the-order slugger Lucas Duda has been gone for a month with a back injury and is nowhere near a return. The pitcher they sent to the mound Thursday has a bone spur in his elbow.

And Mets manager Terry Collins found out Thursday afternoon his leadoff man, Curtis Granderson, needs to sit for at least two days – and might wind up on the disabled list – with a calf injury.

By the time somebody mentioned his slumping club now has to deal with the team with the best record in baseball in a four-game series, the Mets staff was scrambling to remove sharp objects from his reach.

“We don’t need any more depression around here,” Collins said.

And then they played the game.

And the team from New York that looks nothing like the one that beat the Cubs to get to the World Series last fall came from behind in the seventh inning to beat the Cubs, 4-3.

It was the Cubs’ seventh loss in 11 games – seventh straight against teams with winning records – and spoiled the Cubs’ plans to find some midseason balm for the lingering burn of that four-game sweep by the Mets in the National League Championship Series.

The Cubs rallied in the top of the ninth when pinch-hitter Miguel Montero led off with a walk, and Ben Zobrist drove a double off the wall in right – with pinch-runner Travis Wood held at third.

Mets closer Jeurys Familia then struck out Bryant, intentionally walked Anthony Rizzo to load the bases and struck out Willson Contreras.

Baez then popped out to first to end the game.

Anderson continues to spark Sox Sox win 3rd straight series, improve to 8-1 vs. Minnesota

CHICAGO – It took 86 plate appearances, but Tim Anderson finally drew his first major league walk.

Anderson also singled three times and made a pretty play deep in the hole at shortstop, turning, leaping and one-hopping a strike to first baseman Jose Abreu for a picturesque out in the second, a body of work that, in a needed 6-5 White Sox victory over the Minnesota Twins, allowed the rookie to make light of his no-walks thing that has become a secondary storyline in his promising big-league debut.

“I was excited. I was happy,” the soft-spoken Anderson said of the walk. “(Todd) Frazier was like, ‘We got the bat, we got the pitcher, we got the umpire, we got everything,’ ” Anderson said. “It was pretty funny.”

Anderson, batting .314 with a .322 on-base percentage and .514 slugging percentage, has played in 19 games and has 10 with multiple hits. That, and his seven-game hitting streak at the top of the Sox order have provided a welcome

injection, walks be cursed.

“With Timmy doing what he’s doing, it’s nice to watch,” said Frazier, who cracked his 23rd homer against lefthander Tommy Milone, his second in two games. “I was telling (bench coach) Rick Renteria in the dugout, he doesn’t change one bit, whether he’s bad or good.

That’s the sign of a really great athlete.”

On the final day of June, the Sox (4039) won a game they couldn’t afford to lose. The lowly Twins (25-53) rallied to tie it at 5 after the Sox had given starter Carlos Rodon a 5-2 lead and threatened to take a three-game series from the Sox on their home field. But J.B. Shuck capped a 3-for-4 afterTim Anderson noon by driving in the go-ahead run with a lefty-versus-lefty single against Fernando Abad in the eighth inning, helping the Sox to their third series win in a row and improve to 8-1 against the Twins this season.

The Sox hadn’t won three straight series all year, and now they head to Houston to face the red-hot Astros for three games before returning home to play the Yankees and Braves leading to the All-Star break.

“We kept battling and the offense continued to fight, and we got a run where we needed to,” said Shuck, who tied a career high for hits in a game.

Which is what the Sox need to be part of a wild-card chase in the final three months of the season.

“We’re playing better,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “We’re getting some pitching, we’re swinging the bats, we’re playing some defense. You

want to keep that going.”

It was the Sox’s second straight win with contributions from up and down the lineup.

Avisail Garcia and Matt Davidson, making his season debut before leaving with a broken foot, each singled in a run in the Sox’s three-run fourth.

Adam Eaton, moved down a spot since Anderson became the leadoff man, scored a run on Jose Abreu’s single by eluding catcher Kurt Suzuki’s tag and drove in another getting hit with a pitch with the bases loaded.

Rodon retired the first 11 Twins but gave up back-to-back homers to Robbie Grossman and Brian Dozier in the fourth and could not finish the sixth inning.

Nate Jones pitched 11/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win, and David Robertson pitched the ninth for his 21st save.

Sox pitchers continue to appreciate Anderson’s range on defense as well as his ability to make the routine plays.

His glove was thought to be a potential question mark, but so far his defense has been solid, too.

“I don’t think he was necessarily ready right out of spring training, but this is a different kid,” Ventura said.

“Just the ball off the bat, his reactions, his first-step quickness. The first thing you really notice is how he moves. He’s been great. Not flustered. He’s a very confident kid.”

Sox having bad luck with callups this season Davidson 3rd to be injured in 1st game

CHICAGO – In a span of 24 hours, third baseman Matt Davidson got his first callup to the White Sox from Triple-A Charlotte, his first hit in a Sox uniform and his first trip to the disabled list.

And in a span of two months, three Sox callups from Charlotte have been unable to finish their first game because of an injury.

Talk about strange.

“We’re hot that way,” manager Robin Ventura said. “I think they’re afraid to come up. It’s odd.”

Davidson, the Sox’s designated hitter in Thursday’s 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins at U.S. Cellular Field,

fractured his right foot rounding first base after lining an RBI single to center field in the fourth inning against left-hander Tommy Milone.

Davidson stayed in the game but plodded to third on J.B. Shuck’s double and scored when Adam Eaton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. He was pinch-hit for by Jason Coats in the sixth inning with the Sox leading 5-4. He was unavailable after the game.

“It’s terrible,” said Matt Davidson Coats, a teammate of Davidson’s at Charlotte. “To work so hard this year and have this happen to him is crazy.

“He came up to me (in the dugout) and said, ‘Dude, something felt weird,’ like something he hadn’t felt before. He said it felt numb.”

Davidson, who was having an MRI done after the game and will continue to

be evaluated, was unavailable for comment. He is the third snakebitten Sox prospect to get called up and injured, after catcher Kevan Smith – who was in the starting lineup April 25 in Toronto – hurt his back during the team’s pregame stretch, and Coats – who made his debut in left field June 4 in Detroit – left the game after colliding with center fielder Shuck as he was making a running catch. Coats needed stitches in his mouth and was checked for a concussion.

“It’s crazy,” Ventura said.

A career .249 hitter with 133 home runs and 549 RBIs in 937 games in eight minor league seasons, Davidson – who appeared in 31 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013 – was on the right track after hitting for power but batting .199 and .203 at Charlotte after the Sox acquired him in a trade for closer Addison Reed on Dec. 16, 2013.

At Charlotte this season, he produced a .268/.349/.444 slash line with 10 homers, 20 doubles and 46 RBIs and

was selected Wednesday to play in the International League All-Star Game.

He batted .413 and hit five home runs in spring training.

The Sox are short a bat in their lineup without outfielder Melky Cabrera, who is out for a few games with a sore right wrist. The Sox will call up another player Friday before they open a three-game series in Houston, possibly infielder Carlos Sanchez.

“It’s good to get here and not have to wait around and wonder when you’re going to get in,” Davidson said before the game. “I’m glad to be in there today.”

Davidson, 25, was viewed as the third baseman of the future when the Sox acquired him, but his offensive struggles set him back.

“In spring training, he just had a better feel,” Ventura said. “He was more confident, understood his swing better.

Having gone through what he did last year has helped him for this year. And it earned him a spot up here.”

Miami President Pat Riley is a big fan of the symbolic 11:01 p.m. phone call to his team’s top targets. San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said he would rather be sleeping at that moment. And more than $1 billion in deals will likely be hammered out in the next couple of days alone.

Free agency has returned to the NBA, and this July 1 is unlike any other.

Sure, there’s the annual list of superstars who could take their talents elsewhere – Kevin Durant will hear sales pitches designed to talk him into leaving Oklahoma City, Dwyane Wade is prepared to leave Miami if he doesn’t get a deal to his liking, and it seems LeBron James will make the Cleveland Cavaliers dig even more deeply into their pockets to reward him for the city’s first NBA title.

All this comes with a backdrop of an enormous jump in the salary cap, going from $70 million this past season to likely somewhere close to $95 million when the league announces the actual number early next week.

So the spending will be out of control.

That’s for certain.

Privately, this season for Forman is about being competitive, but also laying the foundation to try to land two big-named free agents in the summer of 2017.

That video tribute the Bulls will have planned for the United Center scoreboard when the New York Knicks come to town this upcoming season?

Well, it’s about to get a little longer.

A source close to Joakim Noah confirmed a report that the long-time Bulls big man is “90 percent sure’’ he will be joining Derrick Rose in the “Big Apple” once free agency talks began at 11:01 Thursday night.

Unless there is a complete breakdown in the scheduled meeting between Noah and Knicks president Phil Jackson, go ahead and pencil the 31-yearold in as the new starting center in the homeJoakim Noah town he grew up in.

As far as the role the Bulls will play in this?

Just about none.

As the Sun-Times reported in May, Noah was telling teammates then he was moving on from the Bulls because of a mistrust he had in the direction the front office was taking the team.

That was confirmed by multiple sources over the past four weeks, and again reiterated Thursday morning.

There were reports Noah and the Bulls had “positive dialogue” early on, but that has been disputed by several sources, and again Thursday.

“Jo never had plans to talk to the Bulls, and was already saying goodbye to teammates and some of the staff members,” the source said.

General manager Gar Forman said last week they would talk to Noah’s representative come July 1, and see if there was a mutual meeting ground, but privately the GM has known Noah’s nine-year run with the Bulls was over.

The 6-foot-11 former ninth overall pick out of Florida will leave the organization having played in 572 regular-season games, averaging 9.3 points and 9.4 rebounds a game, as well as winning the 2014 Defensive Player of the Year.

But more importantly than what Noah has done for the city on the court, his impact has been just as powerful off it. His Noah’s Arc Foundation and “Rock the Drop” anti-violence campaign have become a priority for Noah, and that’s why he wants to keep the foundation based in Chicago, according to the source.

Chanticleers win crown

The Associated Press OMAHA, Neb. – Coastal Carolina coach Gary Gilmore often said he just wanted his team to reach the College World Series.

Until this week, he never imagined the Chanticleers would do so much more: They’re heading back to Conway, South Carolina, with the school’s first national championship in any sport.

The Chanticleers defeated Arizona, 4-3, in the deciding Game 3 of the College World Series finals Thursday, capitalizing on two errors on the same play to score four unearned runs in the sixth inning of a game delayed a day by bad weather.

It was worth the wait.

“Whenever I die, I’ll know this group of guys here, they willed themselves to be the national champion,” Gilmore said. “It was just meant to be, no doubt. If there is such a thing as a team of destiny, this group is it.”

Coastal Carolina (55-18) became the first team since Minnesota in 1956 to win the title in its first CWS appearance. Arizona (49-24) was trying for its second national title since 2012, but came up short in a season in which it was picked to finish ninth in the Pac-12.

One day after the hockey world was rocked by three massive moves nearly at the same time – Montreal trading P.K. Subban to Nashville for Shea Weber, Edmonton dealing Taylor Hall to New Jersey for Adam Larsson, and Steven Stamkos leaving millions on the table to stay in Tampa Bay – the Blackhawks made two considerably less splashy moves Thursday. But they might have set the stage for their next big move.

The Hawks gave themselves some depth and some salary-cap flexibility by re-signing forward Brandon Mashinter and defenseman Michal Rozsival

to cheap, one-year contracts. Rozsival, who turns 38 in September, signed for $600,000. Mashinter, a physical bottom-six winger, signed for $575,000.

24 Research changes dietary advice for infants Dear Dr. K: I thought I knew what solid foods to give my baby, and when to give them. But the recommendations seem to change constantly. What do I need to know?

Dear Reader: To make sure I had the most current information, I spoke to my colleague Dr. Claire McCarthy, a primary care pediatrician at Harvard-affiliated Boston Children’s Hospital.

She said most dietary advice has remained the same. For example, wait until your baby is at least 4 months old before starting solids, and introduce one new food at a time.

But research recently has led to three big changes: • Don’t give rice cereal. For many youngsters, their first foray into solid food was a spoonful of rice cereal. Pediatricians used to recommend it as a go-to starting food. But then the Consumer Products Safety Commission raised concern about the amount of arsenic in rice and rice products. (The rice plant is very good at pulling arsenic out of the soil.)

Arsenic can cause many problems, including an increased risk of cancer.

The commission’s report said babies who get two servings of rice cereal a day could double their cancer risk over a lifetime.

Until we know more, pass on the rice cereal. Opt for oatmeal or other types of baby cereal instead.

• Make fish part of your child’s diet. Fish is full of important nutrients. A study from Sweden showed children who ate fish just twice a month during infancy had a 25 percent lower risk of allergies.

The researchers followed the babies until they were 12 years old, and that reduction in risk was still there.

• Do give peanut products. This is a real turnaround. For years, doctors told parents not to give peanut products until children were 2 to 3 years old. The fear was if children were exposed to peanuts at too early an age, they would develop an allergy to peanuts later in life.

But a recent study showed giving peanut products early in life – between 4 and 11 months – actually can prevent peanut allergy.

Talk to your baby’s doctor before giving peanut products if there is a family history of peanut allergy or if your baby might be at higher risk of food allergies for another reason. And don’t give whole peanuts. They can get caught in the baby’s windpipe. Instead, products with ground peanuts – such as peanut paste – are what to use.

Another recent study suggests the lesson learned with peanuts also might apply for other foods to which kids develop allergies: eggs, cow’s milk, sesame nuts and oil, whitefish and wheat. Early exposure to these foods may lower the risk of allergies to them later on.

Every baby is different, and there are circumstances that might change your pediatrician’s advice for your child. Be sure to talk to your doctor to get the best advice for you and your child.

I’m concerned about a photo my uncle posted to Facebook. It features my two female cousins, ages 6 and 2, shirtless.

I know no harm was intended in posting the photo, as they are both adorable girls.

However, I find it inappropriate that the 6-year-old – who is going into first grade – was shirtless in the photo. Now that it is on the internet, it easily could be seen by a pedophile.

How do I express my concern to my uncle about this without coming off like I am trying to parent for him? I’m only 17 and don’t want to overstep my boundaries, but as a caring family member, I am concerned.

Several top bridge experts have been successful traders in the stock and options markets. They understand that the market is volatile, but if a small investment eventually gives a large return, a few paltry losses along the way are no big deal.

How is that relevant in this deal?

South is in four spades. West leads the club jack. East takes dummy’s queen with his ace and shifts to the heart queen. How should the play proceed from there?

Although South had only 19 highcard points, his hand was well worth a two-club opening. If his partner had a 3-3-3-4 Yarborough, South was a favorite to make four spades, and his hand had some defensive tricks outside of its long suit.

North’s two-no-trump rebid promised some points, typically 4-7, with no long suit to show. With a very bad hand, he would have rebid three clubs as a double negative.

South’s immediate reaction was to win with the heart ace and cash his two top trumps in the hope that the queen would drop. But luckily he paused to consider his other options.

Here, if he had played trumps from the top, he would have lost one trick in each suit because he could not have reached the dummy to cash its club winner.

Instead, South made a small investment in safety. After taking the second trick with his heart ace, he led a low spade toward the dummy.

West won with his queen, cashed the heart king, and switched to a diamond, but declarer took that trick, played a low spade to dummy’s 10, and discarded his diamond loser on the club king.
