If dads can do as they like, why not moms? POLL Given that the very first Cheeky Mama column was appropriately about Mother’s Day, I felt compelled to write about Father’s Day. By the way, I hope it was a happy day for all the readers.

For the almost 10 years my husband and I have been together, he has always gone golfing on Father’s Day. The preparation starts the night before. He concentrates on cleaning his golf clubs and loading his gear.

Tee time is about 7 a.m. Eighteen holes always has been the standard. About four guys spend the morning and afternoon together.

Afterward, whenever they are done, we grill out with the family, and that’s that.

So a chunk of this very special day he is not spending time with his beautiful daughter. It’s no big deal either. No one frowns upon it. No one judges daddies as if they are selfish parents. It’s as if they are entitled to do as they please.

Now you might think that I am saying my husband should stay home with us instead, but that is not what I am suggesting at all.

If you recall my first column was about Mother’s Day. It was about allowing myself to be carefree of parental duties. This day I want to be about pampering myself. Unfortunately, it feels so wrong because of societal judgment.

I am calling bluff on societal norms. Mothers and fathers should be treated equally on their respected day.

Mothers shouldn’t feel guilty about spending the day at the spa. They should be able to enjoy any activity that makes them feel cele-

The problem is that there are so many double standards for males and females in general.

Apparently it’s not out of the norm for wives to earn more than their husbands, and people still think that is unusual. We don’t have enough word space to continue the list of double standards nor do you have the time to read them.

So we can at least start by getting rid of this June Cleaver Mother’s Day expectation. Or maybe I just need to get rid of it in my own head.

My perspective is that the world needs to be more fair and just. Let’s remember that these two parental days should be subjective. Without ridicule, both mothers and fathers should be able to enjoy the day as they please.

My daydream is that next Mother’s Day I get the gumption to do as I wish.

TODAY’S TALKER Cat blamed for turning on faucet, flooding Florida shelter

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A cat came with a flood warning when it was adopted from a Florida animal shelter.

Officials at the Florida Humane Society in Pompano Beach told the Miami Herald that one of its cats turned on a faucet last week, leaving the water to run for 17 hours.

President Carol Ebert said the flooding caused water to run out the shelter’s back door. No

animals were injured, but the shelter is seeking donations to repair floors, cabinets and other damage estimated at about $5,000.

Volunteer Terry Arbour said the shelter suspects a 6-month-old kitten known to play in the sinks.

The cat’s name was not released. Arbour said the cat was recently adopted and its new owners were told it was “intelligent enough to turn on water faucets.”

‘PEACE, SALAAM, SHALOM’ DeKalb religious groups gather for Orlando vigil

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Peace, salaam, shalom – those were the words repeated purposefully Wednesday in different accents, from people of all skin colors, across a spectrum of sexual orientation, opposing religious beliefs, and separate walks of life.

Representatives from 11 local religious groups gathered Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church for an interfaith service and vigil in memory of the victims of the shooting at gay nightclub, Pulse, in Orlando, Florida.

“Peace, Salaam, Shalom” (peace in English, Arabic and Hebrew) was first sung at a peace rally after the Sept. 11 attacks. It also led Wednesday’s service of lamenting and healing.

“May our gathering be a witness to the community and to the world that together we will work to defeat all that denigrates another human being,” the Rev. Janet Hunt of First Lutheran Church said. “May our coming together be another step toward ensuring that this does not happen ever again.”

The group lit 50 candles that night – 49 for the victims of the shooting, and one for the gunman. Although lighting that final candle may have brought up feelings of anger and resentment for some, it was an important part of the healing process, and one that was open to interpretation, Hunt said.

“There are a number of ways to receive the lighting of that 50th candle.

For some it is a reminder that every human being, regardless, is within the reach of God’s love and grace. It may also point to the understanding that the one who committed this atrocity is also a victim,” she said. “For some this is a way of symbolizing our shedding light, our bringing out into the open all about this which is evil, including, yes perhaps, the ways in which some, if only in our silence, have contributed to this violence.”

The Rev. Joe Gastiger of First Congregational Church asked members of the community to forgive church leaders who have perhaps failed to comprehend the severity of the marginalization and victimization of the LGBT community.

But solidarity and inclusion can begin to heal the wounds of homophobia and racial or religious biases, Lash said.

Finger-pointing at religious groups has made its way into conversations during the aftermath of the Orlando attack. DeKalb Islamic Center President Mohammed Labadi wanted to make it clear Wednesday that the gunman’s violence was a product of ignorance and hatred, not Islam. On behalf of humanity, however, Labadi extended his deepest apologies.

“You don’t have to worship the way I worship. I don’t have to worship the way you worship. But we can still come together in places like this to heal ... this is why I apologize. I apologize for humanity because we should be better than this,” Labadi said. “ Humanity is a beautiful thing. Not because of what humans posses but what humans can offer others. Let’s come together and heal and move forward to make DeKalb and the country and the world a much better place to be and coexist for all communities. Salaam, Peace, Shalom.”

Uncertainty reigns as fiscal 2017 looms

Continuing budget impasse has social service, education leaders on edge

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – As lawmakers in Springfield continue to negotiate a stopgap state spending plan, local human services providers and higher education leaders are bracing for what could come.

“The seriousness of purpose feels like it hasn’t been communicated to the decision-makers,” said Dawn Littlefield, executive director of the Kishwaukee United Way. “As much as the legislators have heard, as much as the administrators in our state budget have pondered over these issues, I feel like the crisis is not getting heard.”

Although the Kishwaukee United Way does not receive or rely on state funding, the nonprofit organization provides funding to several local organizations that do depend on the state for most of their operating cash to provide services to local children and seniors.

“The real needs of our local agencies is not getting through somehow,” Littlefield said.

As local agencies continue to worry, leaders of the Democrat-controlled Legislature and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner continue to work toward a short-term budget agreement, with some suggesting a vote could come as soon as today. Public pressure on lawmakers is increasing as the threat of stopping services ranging from road construction to social services becomes more real.

The United Way of Illinois, the statewide association that includes the Kishwaukee United Way, surveyed human services providers around the state, including in the DeKalb area, and found that 32 percent reported cutting services to clients by July 2015. As of this month, that has ballooned to 95 percent of the 116 responding agencies.

Additionally, according to the survey, over half of the providers expect that they would not be able to service clients at all if the impasse should continue another six months.

tal health and social service providers and others saw state funding quickly dry up. State money to help low-income students pay for college was halted, as well.

Northern Illinois University ended up fronting money last school year to students who were awarded Monetary

Award Program grants. Kishwaukee College wasn’t financially able to do the same, officials there said.

NIU spokesman Joe King said the university is waiting to see if there will be appropriations for the 2016-17 academic year.

“We are hopeful that there will be

an immediate and positive resolution to the impasse. Until something is finalized, we want to refrain from speculation on the specifics,” King said.

Representatives from Kishwaukee College did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Rauner told the Daily Chronicle earlier this month that he hopes to avoid a repeat of the funding impasse that started July 1.

“I don’t want that to happen anymore,” Rauner said during a June 7 stop in Ogle County. “We need essential services like human services and government operations to get funded.”

Rauner said the money is available to fund a stopgap plan “to get us through January so we don’t have that crisis.”

He and leaders in the Legislature continued meetings Wednesday to negotiate a short-term budget deal during the state’s epic one-year stalemate. Democratic state Senate President John Cullerton said Wednesday morning that offers and counteroffers have been exchanged, but didn’t give

Prosecutors are asking judge to dismiss William Curl’s appeal

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Prosecutors want a judge to dismiss the latest appeal from the man who pleaded guilty in the 2010 murder of 18-year-old Northern Illinois University freshman Antinette “Toni” Keller.

Prosecutors filed a motion to dismiss this week claiming that William Curl failed to provided any evidence to support the allegations he raised in his 2015 petition for post-conviction relief.

“The petition should be dismissed as it is not accompanied by a claim William Curl of innocence or the articulation of a plausible defense that could have been raised at trial,” Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein wrote.

In the petition, which Curl filed from prison, the former DeKalb man claimed he only agreed to plead guilty because his court-appointed attorney,

DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch, made several errors, and because DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack threatened to prosecute his son, who was 13 at the time, in connection with Keller’s murder.

“When the defendant entered his guilty plea, the court questioned the defendant as to whether anyone had threatened or coerced him to enter into the plea agreement and the defendant answered that he had not been threatened or coerced,” Klein wrote. “The petition contradicts the answer that defendant provided to the court on April 13, 2013, and contains no explanation of such inconsistency.”

In August, Judge Robbin Stuckert ruled that Curl could proceed with his claim that poor advice from his court-appointed lawyer and threats from prosecutors led him to plead guilty. However, now that the state has had the opportunity to respond, Curl must meet more stringent legal standards.

If the judge finds sufficient grounds,

the matter could move to the third stage of the process, a post-conviction hearing on the merits.

The petition is in the second stage of the process.

If Stuckert finds Curl’s argument convincing, she could order a new trial or the conviction could be vacated, Curl’s attorney Dan Transier previously told the Daily Chronicle.

In April 2013, Curl entered a special plea agreement in which he maintained his innocence but acknowledged prosecutors could prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he murdered Keller.

Keller, an NIU student from Plainfield, was last seen Oct. 14, 2010, when she told friends she was going for a walk in Prairie Park. Her burned body was found in the park two days later.

She was 18.

Curl, 40, is serving a 37-year prison sentence at Menard Correctional Center. He has exhausted his other appeal options, including a belated attempt to withdraw his guilty plea.

The case is next due in court Aug. 3.

“Pumping more money into Chicago simply because it’s Chicago, I don’t think is fair,” Pritchard said.

The governor and Democrats have been unable to agree on a budget, with Rauner demanding business-friendly, union-weakening laws as a condition for agreeing to a spending plan that would include a tax hike.

Democrats said the governor’s conditions have nothing to do with the budget. Illinois’ new fiscal year begins Friday. That’s when billions in patchwork spending that lawmakers approved for fiscal 2016 – including money for K-12 education – will expire.

The talks come as lawmakers and the governor face increasing public pressure to end the impasse.

State Rep. Tom Demmer said Wednesday that he was hopeful that an agreement was near. Funding for Chicago Public Schools, which has been a major sticking point in the negotiations, remained such. But the lawmaker said he “expects, hopes” that a budget vote will happen today.

“It’s my understanding that we have a tentative agreement on a stopgap budget,” said Demmer, who has been part of the working groups nego-

tiating. “We’re as close as we’ve ever been.”

But state Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, wasn’t as optimistic. He was reached in Scotland on Wednesday where he was on a preplanned family vacation. The veteran lawmaker would not return in time for a vote today, but said his wouldn’t decisive, anyway.

The major sticking point for lawmakers returning to Springfield this week has been how much to increase money for elementary education, particularly CPS. Democrats filed legislation Tuesday that would send CPS almost $400 million more next year, including money to help pay for teacher pensions. DeKALB – Because of slow population growth in the city, the DeKalb Sanitary District announced it would waive certain sewer and water connection fees for the next two years.

Collins, head of the DSD, announced the fee waiver at Monday’s City Council meeting. It applies to the approximately $1,400 sewer connection cost for a typical new single-family home, and was effective June 1.

“One of our concerns is we’re seeing our bills, our receipts, go down. Water usage in DeKalb is declining,” he said.

Collins said the fee waiver comes at the same time as DSD plans to upgrade its plant, located on Hollister Avenue in DeKalb, in response to federal and state Environmental Protection Agency rules.

He attributed DSD decreased residential revenue to people being more

conservative with how much water they use.

Collins coupled that with the fact that fewer new residents have moved into the area and built homes. Scores of lots are annexed, zoned and otherwise ready to be built on here, he said, but they sit undeveloped.

“Many people that have choices are choosing not to come to DeKalb,” said Collins, who is also an area dentist.

“When the city has problems with declining water usage ... or declining people living here, then we have problems.”

He spoke for several minutes at the City Council meeting about how the fee was part of what he believed to be the exorbitant costs – compared with nearby municipalities – of new construction in the city of DeKalb.

The DSD is responsible for collecting and treating wastewater in the city of DeKalb and for Northern Illinois University.

STATE AP: City lawyers hid evidence of police misconduct

CHICAGO – When a federal judge concluded that a lawyer employed by the city of Chicago concealed audio evidence in a civil trial, the court issued a sharp rebuke, saying the recordings showed police lied about the events that led officers to shoot and kill a black motorist.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel portrayed it as an isolated instance of unscrupulous lawyering, but City Hall lawyers have, in fact, faced similar criticism in nearly half a dozen police-misconduct cases in recent years.

And it’s not just Chicago. An Associated Press review of hundreds of court records nationwide revealed similar patterns of behavior involving municipal attorneys in other cities, including New York, Baltimore, Denver and Spokane, Washington. Lawyers deliberately hid important facts, delayed their disclosure or otherwise sought to subvert evidence in civil cases, the review found.

Municipal lawyers, who are paid with tax dollars, represent city employees in noncriminal matters and rarely attract public attention because they operate far behind elected leaders. Court records indicate they are often a weak link in systems designed to expose po-

WAUKEGAN – Lake County is doubling the capacity of a medication-assisted treatment program for people addicted to prescription painkillers, heroin or other opioid drugs.

The Lake County Health Department announced Monday it will be able to treat 200 patients through a $325,000 federal grant.

Overdose deaths related to opioid painkillers and heroin are climbing nationally and in Lake County, where opioids including heroin accounted for 58 deaths last year.

Age to buy tobacco in Chicago increasing to 21

CHICAGO – The minimum age in Chicago for buying cigarettes and other tobacco products goes up to 21 at the end of the week.

The city on Friday joins about 170 local jurisdictions around the country that have made the change, including New York City and Boston. Health advocates have pushed the policy to discourage teenagers from starting a harmful habit.

Hawaii and California have raised the tobacco purchase age to 21 statewide.

Illinois lawmakers are considering a similar measure.

The Chicago City Council approved the age increase in March, along with higher taxes and other efforts to combat tobacco sales.

City agencies and aldermen have been working with licensed tobacco retailers to inform them about the new requirement

That leaves a lawsuit as the only avenue for surviving relatives to seek justice.

No criminal charges were filed in the case of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who died in 2014 after a white New York City police officer put him in a chokehold. A year later, the city settled the family’s wrongful-death claim for $5.9 million.

Judges nationwide have chided city attorneys.

New York Supreme Court Judge Lara Genovesi wrote in a June 6 opinion that attorneys representing the nation’s largest city had displayed “a pattern of willful failure” to turn over evidence by court-ordered deadlines in a lawsuit alleging that police beat Jabbar Campbell as he hosted a gay pride party in 2013.

She called their false claims that key evidence didn’t exist “astounding.”

Private attorneys contend that for every city lawyer chastised for unethical practices, many others go undetected.

“We have to fight for everything we get,” said A. Dwight Pettit, a civil rights attorney in Baltimore, referring to the challenge of obtaining evidence from city lawyers.

For many attorneys representing a major city, “revealing the truth ... is not necessarily high on their list,” said Joanna Schwartz, who teaches at the University of California, Los Angeles,

law school. She and other legal observers complain that City Hall lawyers are often more concerned with fending off costly lawsuits or deflecting bad publicity than exposing wrongdoing by police.

The head of Chicago’s legal department, Stephen Patton, insists private lawyers are too quick to ascribe sinister motives to honest mistakes. Opposing sides, he added, often have sincere disagreements over evidence.

His counterpart in Baltimore agrees.

“We always tell our attorneys, ‘Don’t ever let your case get compromised by not turning over’ ” evidence, George Nilson said in a phone interview.

In the Chicago lawsuit that involved the fatal shooting of Darius Pinex, Judge Edmond Chang ruled that city attorney Jordan Marsh concealed audio files that proved officers heard nothing on their radio about a car like Pinex’s being involved in an earlier shooting.

During the 2015 trial, the officers had claimed that’s why they stopped him.

Chang ordered a retrial and Marsh resigned.

Emanuel downplayed the incident in January but later asked former U.S. Attorney Dan Webb to review law department practices. Webb’s findings are pending. A similar report is pending in Denver, where a city attorney was accused of withholding key emails in a jail-beating lawsuit.

Money donated in bid to make site national park

COLLINSVILLE – Officials in southwestern Illinois are putting more money into a bid to make an ancient historic site a national park.

The Cahokia Mounds is the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico. Archeologists said it was home to as many as 20,000 people in its heyday around A.D. 1100.

The Bellville News-Democrat reported the St. Clair County Board this week approved a $25,000 contribution to the HeartLands Conservancy as the group lobbies for the national park designation.

County Administrator Debra Moore said that as a national park the management of the Cahokia Mounds would become a responsibility of the federal parks system.

Historians said a still-visible hill-like structure was once a center of the site with multiple villages surrounding it.

Illinois owes $82,000 in utility bills for Peoria

PEORIA – Public records show that the Illinois Department of Corrections owes nearly $82,000 in utility payments for its facility in Peoria.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reported that a Freedom of Information Act request uncovered documentation of the amount owed to sewer, water, gas and electricity providers for the Peoria Adult Transition Center. The 48,000-square-foot facility houses nearly 250 offenders who are reintegrating into the community.

The money owed includes nearly $21,000 to Ameren Illinoi and nearly $40,000 to Constellation Energy for electric and gas. The state owes about $7,000 to the Greater Peoria Sanitary District and nearly $14,000 to Illinois American Water. The state will accrue penalties on overdue bills to the sanitary district and Ameren.

The Associated Press New laws targeting abortion are set to take effect Friday in about one-fifth of the states, initiating another wave of restrictions just days after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Texas measure that led several clinics to close.

Some of the laws limit when and how the procedure can be performed. Others restrict what can be done with tissue from aborted fetuses.

Still others seek to block abortion providers from getting government funding.

They are part of a raft of laws that are going on the books around the country with the start of the new fiscal year July 1. California, for example, will tighten its childhood vaccination requirements, narrowing the ability of parents to opt out. Vermont will become the first state to require labeling of genetically modified ingredients in food. And Idaho and Tennessee will expand the right to carry concealed guns.

A look at some of the new measures:

ABORTION

Laws limiting what can be done with the remains of aborted fetuses are set to take effect in Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Indiana and South Dakota, although some are under legal attack.

In Florida, Mississippi and Missouri, new laws would stop tax dollars from going to Planned Parenthood.

Many of those funding and fetal-tissue laws came in response to undercover videos released last summer that alleged Planned Parenthood officials were selling fetal tissue for profit. The organization denied it, and two anti-abortion activists who made the videos face felony charges in Texas.

The bill becomes law Friday. restrictions enacted,” said Elizabeth Nash, who tracks state policies at the nonprofit Guttmacher Institute, which supports abortion rights. “But this year, we’ve seen a bit of an uptick.”

A lawsuit already is challenging a new Indiana law banning abortions because of the fetus’ race, sex or genetic abnormalities, such as Down syndrome.

HEALTH AND FOOD

California will no longer allow parents to cite philosophical objections to avoid vaccinating their children against measles, mumps and rubella. The law will now require a valid medical reason for an exemption and will apply to public and private schools.

“This will help restore our community immunity,” said Sen. Richard Pan, a Sacramento pediatrician who introduced the legislation after a measles outbreak at Disneyland in December 2014. The outbreak sickened 147 people in the U.S., mostly in California.

Vermont will require most food containing genetically modified ingredients to have

labels that read “produced with genetic engineering.”

GUNS AND CRIME

Starting Friday, Idaho will allow residents 21 and older to carry concealed guns without needing permits or training, making it the 10th state with such a policy. Similar laws took effect earlier this year in Mississippi and West Virginia.

Tennessee will let faculty and staff with concealed gun permits carry their weapons at public colleges and universities.

Georgia will allow employees and students older than 18 to carry stun guns on public college campuses. Supporters tout it as a means of self-defense, while critics worry the weapons could be misused.

In Colorado, a new law doubles to 20 years the amount of time after an attack that sexual assault victims have to seek charges. State Rep. Rhonda Fields crafted the bill after two Colorado women claimed Bill Cosby assaulted them decades ago. The comedian has denied any wrongdoing.

Defendant’s vacation is like special treatment Although he’s accused of raping two girls who were at his 18th birthday party in May, Brenton Cleveland, of Kingston, was granted permission on June 21 by Judge Robbin Stuckert to leave the state to vacation in Wisconsin with his family, over the objection of prosecutors.

Maybe Cleveland did some fishing, ate some cheese curds, kicked back and relaxed. It was a short trip – Stuckert only gave him permission to leave the state from 2 p.m. June 24 to 9 p.m.

June 26.

It should also be the last out-of-state vacation for Cleveland until the pending, very serious charges against him are resolved. Cleveland faces charges including unlawful restraint, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and criminal sexual assault.

The most serious charge, criminal sexual assault, carries a sentence of four to 15 years in prison.

As DeKalb County defendants go, Cleveland is privileged.

Were he in the same situation as many of the people who come through DeKalb County bond court on a daily basis, he wouldn’t be asking leave to travel anywhere.

Most of the people accused of crimes less serious than rape tell judges every day that they struggle to post as little as $100 bail.

Cleveland’s family was able to post $25,000 for him the same day he was arrested. They also decided he should come along on vacation with them last weekend.

There are some legitimate reasons for allowing defendants in criminal cases to travel across state lines.

Maybe they involve work, or a death in the family, or a medical procedure.

When it’s just for fun – that feels a bit like special treatment.

Of course, people accused of crimes are innocent until proven guilty, and one could argue that $25,000 bail is a large enough sum to discourage a defendant from running away from the charges against them.

But we also understand how victims and their families would be offended at the thought of the person accused of doing them harm off having a good time in Wisconsin – including possibly around women who have no idea about the charges he faces.

Illinois is a big state. Let Cleveland remain in it while these charges are pending.

North America more than sum of its parts This week’s meeting among the leaders of the United States, Mexico and Canada might have been a mostly forgettable formality – had British voters not just decided to leave the European Union. Add in Donald Trump’s shrill threats to tear up trade agreements and build walls, and Presidents Barack Obama and Enrique Pena Nieto and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau face a need to reaffirm, and strengthen, their own growing ties.

Luckily, these leaders have a pretty good story to tell. Canada, Mexico and the U.S. are one another’s most important trading partners. The U.S. exports more than four times as much to Mexico and Canada as it does to China, and more than twice as much as to the EU. Well-developed supply chains mean that more than 40 percent of the value of U.S. imports from Mexico, and 25 percent of those from Canada, originates in the U.S., compared with 2 percent to 5 percent for the EU, China, India and South Korea. Since 1993, North American trade has more than tripled, and cross-border investment has quintupled.

By that yardstick and many others – including the millions of jobs that depend on cross-border trade – the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement has brought economic benefits to all its members. Economic integration has, in turn, helped spur cooperation on everything from climate change to cybersecurity.

Obama, Pena Nieto and Trudeau now need to remind their citizens of the concrete benefits that even-greater integration and cooperation can bring.

Their countries have good historical reasons not to aspire to an EU-like political union, but they can nevertheless take more of a trilateral approach toward

common challenges.

On clean energy, the three countries can cooperate to curb methane emissions, phase out fossil fuel subsidies, and create a continentwide system for pricing carbon. The joint pledge that the three leaders plan to make at this week’s summit, to use clean power for half of overall electricity by 2025, is a good step. A key to making it work will be to encourage solar energy in Mexico, where electricity demand will keep growing even as it peaks in the U.S. and Canada.

The presidents should also finally nail down the “single window” electronic processing of customs information that they’ve long promised, in order to make the flow of goods among them speedier and more secure. And if they step up investment in border infrastructure, it will become easier to inspect shipments and to coordinate the efforts of law enforcement to root out the illicit transcontinental trade in opioids.

Finally, Obama should overcome any impulse to downplay the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement at this summit. He’s reportedly worried that the subject could create political difficulties for Hillary Clinton, who has unwisely backtracked on her previous support for it. But the TPP stands to make North America as a whole more competitive, and to generate annual economic gains of $2 billion to $3 billion for the U.S. and about $1 billion apiece for Canada and Mexico.

Of course, the three leaders should not ignore trade’s dislocations. But there’s a strong case for greater regional integration, and this week Obama, Pena Nieto and Trudeau have a good opportunity to make it.

But this is to ignore what at least one pollster found was the chief motive for Leave voters, both Tory and Labour: “the principle that decisions about the UK should be taken in the UK.” It’s easy to dismiss this concern as xenophobia – too easy, for Americans who would never dream of handing any supranational organization significant power over public policy affecting them.

But it can also be read as a desire to protect democracy, which is intertwined with national sovereignty. The EU has a democracy deficit because there is no European public to which it can be accountable.

As if to prove that the EU is at its heart undemocratic, some Remainers are now urging Parliament to ignore the result of the referendum. These fans of the EU are living in a fantasy world rather than making practical decisions; angrily rejecting people for whom they have little understanding and less sympathy; throwing a tantrum.

They are, in short, the mirror image of the caricature they have created for what Brexiteers are like.

Mostly, what the repeated investigations into Benghazi prove (again) are the dangers of getting caught in a closed information loop.

For years, Republicans have been fixated on a theory that never made any sense in the first place – that the Obama administration and the 2012 Obama re-election campaign believed news of a planned attack in Benghazi would have been politically toxic, while somehow the same deaths as a result of a spontaneous local uprising would have been no big deal.

Those fully trapped inside the information loop even came to believe that Obama actively chose not to rescue the Americans in Benghazi, because it would be politically disadvantageous for him to do so.

Supposedly, the fact that there was still organized terrorism would undermine Obama’s case that he had

been successful in fighting al-Qaida.

But outside of the Republican bubble, Obama never had claimed he fully defeated terrorism, and certainly never had claimed that he had eliminated organized terrorism but that spontaneous attacks were no big deal.

And in fact, there was no massive outcry from the electorate once it became clear that the Benghazi attacks had been planned.

Again: Just because the conspiracy theories about Benghazi were bonkers doesn’t change the fact that the attacks were a policy failure, and that the best thing anyone can say about the Obama (and Clinton) policy in Libya is that the other options might have been worse.

We’re still waiting for serious congressional oversight of Obama’s foreign policy. I’m not holding my breath for it to start anytime soon.

If you are reading this column, the world still exists.

This should come as a relief to anyone who has been reading the commentary about the United K ingdom’s allegedly terrifying and catastrophic vote to leave the European Union. The vote could lead, some forecasters said, to a global recession (one that, knowing today’s news media, will inevitably be called a “Brecession”).

“We could yet see European countries doing what they have done for centuries – physically attack one another,” worries one thinker consulted

by Politico about the fallout. Political scientist Ian Bremmer called Brexit “the most significant political risk the world has experienced since the Cuban Missile Crisis.”

Supporters of Brexit labeled the campaign against it “Project Fear,” an attempt to fill British voters with mindless terror about the risks of leaving the EU rather than to appeal to their reason. It did not work on a majority of voters.

But it seems to have gotten some supporters of the EU to the threshold of a bomb shelter.

The assertions that Brexit will cause a geopolitical catastrophe rely on a dubious reading of history that has managed to become an article of faith in pro-EU circles. An article in Slate after the vote recited the cate-

Wickness takes over as Spartans’ coach

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – In the second half of a summer league game against Yorkville, the Sycamore girls basketball team came out of a timeout with a planned out-of-bounds play.

With new coach Adam Wickness now at the helm, the Spartans ran it to perfection for an easy lay-up.

Wickness has taken over for former coach Brett Goff, who stepped down after last season, and the young Spartans have spent the summer working under Wickness, who was an assistant coach for Sycamore the previous year.

“We’ve had that situation happen

a couple of times where we’ve drawn something up and they’ve run it exactly the way we wanted it to,” said Wickness, who had spent 12 years in the Kaneland boys program before coming over to Sycamore last season.

Midway through the regular season last year, Goff came to Wickness and told him that he would likely step down from the head coaching position when the Spartans’ season was over. Wickness knew there was a chance that he would be the one to take over – causing him to spend the second half of the season as an assistant while also knowing he could be groomed to take over.

Missy Franklin turned in one of the gutsiest performances of her career to earn a spot for Rio in the 200 freestyle.

One night after she struggled to seventh in the 100 backstroke – an event she won four years ago in London – there was plenty of speculation that she’d be hard-pressed to qualify for any individual events at these games.

Franklin herself sounded as though she’d be happy just getting on the team as a relay swimmer.

The Spartans finished 21-7 last season, falling to Wheaton St. Francis in the regional final.

Wickness, who was officially hired in April, praised Goff in helping him in the transition, teaching him how to organize practices and adjusting going from coaching boys to girls. He also said that while he may be a little more laid-back than Goff, there won’t be too much of a difference for the Spartans under the new head coach.

The Spartans will likely be a younger team in the first season under Wickness, but the returning players said having a familar face taking over helped ease the transition.

“It’s comforting to know that it’s somebody I know already and that I’m comfortable with and used to,” junior Kate Majerus said.

Wickness also has the benefit of having former boys coach Andrew Stacy being an assistant for him and said that Goff will likely coach the freshman team, however, the numbers for the summer league in Geneva and workouts have been low – allowing many of the younger players to gain valuable playing experience.

He said the low turnout is likely because so many of the players also play other sports in the summer.

“We’ve had to patchwork a little bit where we’ve only had six girls at different events, but the girls that are there are working really, really hard,” Wickness said. “(The coach-

Baez key figure in Cubs’ sweep

CINCINNATI – Anyone who still believes the Cubs will shop Javy Baez for pitching near the trade deadline hasn’t been watching very closely to what the young infielder has done for the team with the best record in baseball this season.

Especially in the field the past week. Or at the plate the past two games.

Baez left his fingerprints all over the Cubs’ three-game sweep of the last-place Reds this Javy Baez week, not to mention his face-print on the infield grass Wednesday at Great American Ball Park.

After delivering his first career grand slam in the 15th inning of Tuesday’s marathon victory, Baez just missed another homer in his first at-bat Wednesday before finishing a 3-for-5 afternoon in Wednesday’s 9-2 victory.

But it was what he did in the field at second base that defined his performance on this day, as it has much of the season at points all across the diamond.

“He’s got the best baseball instincts I’ve ever seen,” starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (6-6) said. “That play he made [Wednesday] was unbelievable, and he makes them at all different positions.

“He’s a huge piece of this team.”

With Joey Votto on first base in the fifth Wednesday, Baez fielded a roller from Jay Bruce in the base path, swipetagged Votto just before the runner got out of reach, and then spun clockwise to throw to first as he fell. He got Bruce by a half step to end the inning and landed face-first on the grass, where he lay for a few seconds for dramatic effect.

“Reaction, man,” Baez said. “I don’t know.”

“It’s Javy Baez,” pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. said matter-of-factly as if reporting the current temperature. “You always expect something spectacular from him.”

As the Cubs head to New York to face the Mets on the final leg of a three-city trip, Baez already owns three of the best four fielding plays the Cubs have made during the first seven games – at two different positions.

That included a dive to his left from third base that knocked a hot shot into the air, where he grabbed it barehanded while on his back and threw from the

“He is a Gold Glove-caliber player,” said manager Joe Maddon, who has used him at all four infield spots this season.

Baez is the best athlete on the team, ace Jake Arrieta has said more than once. A longtime scout Wednesday said the same thing, unsolicited during a conversation about another player – adding that he’s also the team’s best shortstop.

Yet Baez remains a man without a position, moving all over the diamond as needed, waiting for the day he’ll get a chance to settle in at one position.

“Obviously, I’m trying to be the best,” Baez said. “I’m trying to get a Gold Glove. But I’m taking it day by day and trying to stay healthy, and we’ll see how it’s going to be in the future.”

“There’s still things we want to fix with him regarding just some real simple mistakes,” Maddon said, “because he definitely has a flair for the dramatic.

“As he gets older and more experienced, he’s going to stop making the routine mistake, because he can do some things that most everybody else cannot do out there.”

CINCINNATI – Never mind Kris Bryant’s power-hitting heroics Monday. Or manager Joe Maddon’s mad-scientist roster alchemy Tuesday.

The lasting impact of the Cubs’ sweep of the Reds this week might have more to do with the skinny guy who finished Wednesday’s 9-2 victory on the mound.

Since a five-game debut in September, rookie right-hander Carl Edwards Carl Edwards has spent barely a week in the majors this season. But his huge performance in Tuesday’s 11th inning – when he retired Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce in a 1-2-3 inning – resonated long after the Cubs won that game in 15 innings.

“He got to 2-0 on Votto, then after that, man, he just took command of the inning,” manager Joe Maddon said.

“You could just see from standing [in the dugout] there was jump at the end of his pitches. That was good to see.”

By Wednesday, he was coming into the game an inning early, to clean up veteran Justin Grimm’s two-on, noneout jam, and retired six of the seven he faced – lighting up the stadium radar gun with upper-90s velocity.

“If we could start working him in, and he gets comfortable, that could be a big boost to us,” said Maddon, whose bullpen has slumped into a significant weakness in recent weeks – putting the front office on high alert to land bullpen help before the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

“My thing is just to get the guys’ trust,” said Edwards, whose only run allowed in four outings since his callup was on a home run by the first batter he faced (the Cardinals’ Aledmys Diaz).

“Get the whole team’s trust and get [Maddon’s] trust,” he said.

Edwards, 24, has eight strikeouts and one walk in 52/3 innings (1.59 ERA).

“I felt pretty good about going out there [Tuesday night] in that high-powered situation and to go through the heart of their lineup the way I did,” he said.

Rizzo HR not a blast – just gassed: After Ben Zobrist bunted for a hit, and Bryant singled him to third, Anthony Rizzo turned a would-be out on a fly to the left-center gap into his first career inside-the-park home run in the first inning Wednesday.

“I’ll take it. It counts just as much as a 500-foot one,” said Rizzo, who was visibly gassed in the dugout after he finished circling the bases on the ball that caromed off left fielder Adam Duvall’s glove, into center fielder Billy Hamilton’s face and then off toward the left-field line.

“I’m really proud of how quick my heart rate came down,” he said, “by about the third inning.”

Added Rizzo: “Hopefully, [Hamilton’s] all right.”

Hamilton suffered a bruise on the left side of his face and left the game as the Reds placed him in MLB’s concussion protocol. Hamilton was on the seven-day concussion disabled list this month after being hurt on a slide into third.

Tidbits: First-month rookie Albert Almora Jr. hit his first big-league home run in the fourth inning, an opposite-gap shot to right-center. “Pretty exciting feeling,” said Almora, who also made a diving catch in center field to end the seventh. ... The Cubs anticipate a possible return from the disabled list this weekend of infielder Tommy La Stella (hamstring), but the lefty-hitting reseve is scheduled for at least one more rehab game with Triple-A Iowa on Thursday.

Wrist injury likely to cost Cabrera 3 or 4 games

CHICAGO – White Sox left fielder Melky Cabrera is expected to miss three to four games because of a mild right wrist sprain.

Cabrera, the Sox’s most consistent hitter, aggravated the wrist Tuesday in the Minnesota Twins’ 4-0 victory.

He originally hurt it diving for a ball in Cleveland two weekends ago, and it flared up Tuesday on a swing and when he leaped near the wall on Brian Dozier’s second home run.

A switch-hitter, Cabrera said the wrist bothers him only swinging left-handed, but the Sox’s doctors and training staff are prescribing rest.

Cabrera is 11 for 26 (.423) with two homers, one triple, two doubles, six RBIs and four runs scored over the last six games.

Avisail Garcia, who has been used primarily as a designated hitter or a right fielder, started in left field.

The injury is a tough blow to a team struggling to score runs consistently.

Cabrera is batting .294/.344/.462 with eight homers and 39 RBIs and has been used in the fourth and fifth spots in manager Robin Ventura’s lineup.

“It’s difficult because I want to play, but the doctors said the best for me right now is just to take a rest for a couple of days because I have inflammation there,” Cabrera said through translator Billy Russo.

Surgery possible for Putnam: Righthander Zach Putnam is facing the possibility of an arthroscopic procedure to remove bone chips from his elbow, or even Tommy John surgery, he said, but remains hopeful of avoiding each of those season-ending scenarios.

“He got over the hump of that shock of getting beat around a little bit,’’ manager Robin Ventura said.

In any event, Shields’ five-plus innings with three runs allowed against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park last Thursday suggested he was getting back to being what the White Sox expected when they traded for him, and he seemed to confirm that Wednesday with 62/3 innings of onerun ball in a 9-6 victory over the Minnesota Twins at U.S. Cellular Field.

“Yeah, it’s tough when you go to a new team after someone trades for you and it looks the way it did,’’ Ventura said. “But I though the way he handled Boston and being able to fight through it and being a veteran helps him. He threw 93 pitches, 61 for strikes. Ventura and pitching coach Don Cooper had been saying Shields problems were as simple as not gettting ahead and pounding the strike zone. Shields threw first-pitch strikes to 23 of 27 batters.

His books introduced filthy monsters and draconian authority figures in all their grotesque glory, then sicced good-hearted (if mischievous) child protagonists on them.

A live-action version of Dahl’s 1982 book “The BFG” makes its way to the screen Friday, directed by Steven Spielberg. The movie stars Mark Rylance as the titular dream-catching Big Friendly Giant, with Ruby Barnhill playing his new best friend, plucky orphan Sophie.

Although most adaptations of Dahl’s works have turned out pretty well, “The BFG” shows how tricky the transformation can be.

The movie is vividly imaginative, with breath-taking special effects that transform Rylance into a beanpole of a supersized human. It revels in Dahl’s extensive vocabulary of made-up words, such as hippodumplings and crocadowndillies. The movie also features the irreverent stuff Dahl loved so much, like earth-quaking flatulence.

But it isn’t nearly as exciting as the book. Maybe it’s appropriate that a film about dreams can very nearly lull you

to sleep. The movie spends much more time acquainting us with the world of giants than taking advantage of the action these massive, bloodthirsty characters are capable of scaring up.

The movie could have learned some lessons from previous Dahl adaptations. Here are a few.

Don’t worry about what the author thinks: “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” (1971) Plot in a sentence: The impoverished

young Charlie Bucket wins the chance to tour an eccentric’s candy workshop and watches as ill-behaved children get their long-overdue comeuppance.

Dahl was famously disgusted with the movie version of his 1964 book, directed by Mel Stuart. The screenplay Dahl wrote was heavily reworked, but that wasn’t his only complaint: He wanted Spike Milligan to play Willy, and he thought Charlie’s role was overshadowed by Gene Wilder’s wonky Wonka. (The title of the movie was even changed from the book’s alliterative “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”)

Audiences weren’t much easier to please; the movie was met with a disappointing box office upon its release. But a few years down the line, it became hugely popular. And why is that? It really did capture some of

Dahl’s spirit. For one, it didn’t soften the content for kids, leaving the scare factor high. That eerie boat ride, for example, was enough to give children nightmares well into adulthood. It also appealed to parents as much as their offspring, which was a hallmark of Dahl’s work.

Another adaptation of the novel – this time retaining the book’s title – came out in 2005, courtesy of Tim Burton. Dahl fans agreed that the writer, who died in 1990, would have been happier with this incarnation, which more closely followed the book. Audiences, though, might have been too distracted

by Johnny Depp’s soft-spoken, giggling, creepy Wonka to fully appreciate the story.

Gore is preferred, either shown or implied: “The Witches” (1990) Plot in a sentence: The recently

orphaned Luke Eveshim goes on a trip with his grandmother and must do battle with a crew of hideous witches after they turn him into a mouse.

Here was another adaptation that Dahl disavowed. (He wasn’t easy to please.) And yet, the movie certainly lived up to the scary spirit of its source material. It’s basically a horror movie: The witches are sickening to look at (thanks to fine special effects by Jim Henson), and they do ghastly things to

children – luring them in with candy, then transforming them into rodents.

In one particularly nightmarish scene, a cook lops off poor Luke’s tail. And if there’s any question what the Grand High Witch (a perfectly cast Anjelica Huston) is capable of, just look at Grandma’s missing pinky.

The most conspicuous change between book and movie is the fact that, at the end of the film, Luke gets to be a boy again. Even Dahl can’t come between Hollywood and its happy endings.

No need for kid gloves: “Matilda” (1996) Plot in a sentence: Wunderkind

Matilda Wormwood uses her telekinetic powers to give her brutal headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, what’s coming to her.

Danny DeVito directed this adaptation of Dahl’s 1988 novel. It turned out that the man behind “Throw Momma From the Train” and “The War of the Roses” was the perfect person to usher a children’s story – albeit a dark one – to the screen.

Stage Coach to present ‘The Devil’s Disciple’ DAILY CHRONICLE

DeKalb’s Stage Coach Players will bring “The Devil’s Disciple,” a tale of couples who do not love each other, mistaken identity, and misguided religious zeal, to life July 7 through 17.

First produced in 1898, George Bernard Shaw’s work is illuminated by colorful characters, political commentary and social judgments surrounding the war for independence in 1777. It was Shaw’s first critical and financial stage success.

Stage Coach Players first performed this play in 1952.

The main character, Richard Dudgeon, played by Vince Virtue, is a free-thinker, totally opposed to his mother’s oppressive Puritanism, and is dubbed The Devil’s Disciple for it. Mrs. Dudgeon, played by Patricia Finn Morris, has nothing good to say about anyone, even the local minister and his wife.

Mr. Anderson is played by R. Scott Purdy, a newcomer to Stage Coach with years of theater experience, and Mrs. Anderson is played by Diane Ledbetter, last seen in “Harvey.”

Enter the British army, who are traveling the New Hampshire countryside intimidating the towns by hanging a rebel in the square and moving on to the next. All of the scenarios are familiar to us, in a larger-than-life rendition of melodrama – a reading of the will with a surprise twist, the anti-hero who emerges virtuously, mistaken identity and the iron fist of the British General “Gentleman Johnny” Burgoyne, played by David Booth. The final act is a suspenseful, life-threatening trial and battle of wits.

fox has to recruit help after his chicken-thieving makes his family and friends the target of three dangerous farmers.

Wes Anderson went in an entirely different direction with his stop-motion animation version of Dahl’s 1970 novel. The contours of the story are the same, but Anderson took liberties with a lot of details.

Even as the movie is so obviously a work of its auteur, it’s also faithful to Dahl’s spirit, with wry comedy and an insistence on not looking down on its youngest audience members.

There are still hints of gore – a farmer wears the tail of his vulpine adversary as a necktie – but also plenty of heart.

Anderson adds a contentious father-son relationship that never existed in the story.

Would Dahl have approved of the director’s almost pathological devotion to whimsy? Maybe not. But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it.

The DeKalb Municipal Band’s “A Star Spangled Spectacular” on July 4 will include a gala celebration of American patriotic music, a salute to veterans, soloist Gregor King in his second appearance with the band, a trumpet trio and musical fireworks.

The performance begins at 8 p.m. Monday at the Dee Palmer Band Gregor King Shell at Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

King serves as the choir director for Clinton Rosette and Huntley middle schools in DeKalb and recently directed the musical, “My Son Pinocchio Jr.” He sings tenor as member of Cor Cantiamo at Northern Illinois University and the St. Charles Singers. He will travel to England in the summer of 2017 to perform in an

international choral tour.

King received a bachelor’s degree in vocal music education from Millikin University. During his collegiate career, he competed in the international Harmony Sweepstakes, an a cappella singing competition, where his group placed fourth overall.

He also traveled to China during the 2008 Olympic games to sing with his collegiate choir. His acting credits include Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof” and Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables.”

King will perform Michael Buble’s rendition “Cry Me a River” and “Anthem” from Tim Rice’s 1987 musical “Chess.” The song describes the feelings of Soviet Russia’s chess champion Anatoly Sergievsky, when he defects. Indian Valley Theatre will take a walk down the aisle in its next production, “Always a Bridesmaid.”

The show runs July 15 through 17 at the historic Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

“Always a Bridesmaid” is written by the team of Jessie Jones, Nick Hope and Jamie Wooten, authors of “The Dixie Swim Club,” “The Hallelujah Girls,” “The Red Velvet Cake War” and many others.

In this comedic romp, four friends have sworn to keep the promise they made on the night of their senior prom: to be in each other’s weddings ... no matter what. More than 30 years later, these Southern friends-for-life

Dear Reader: For many people, a primary care physician (PCP) can effectively manage standard risk factors for heart disease.

Your PCP also will know when you need to see a cardiologist and can refer you to a particular one.

If you’re concerned you might benefit from seeing a cardiologist, but your PCP has not referred you to one, here are some guidelines. If you’ve already had a heart attack or you are at high risk for having a heart attack, I think you should have a cardiologist who knows you. Or say you haven’t had a heart attack, but you have cholesterol or high blood pressure that just won’t be controlled with standard treatment. If so, a cardiologist is in order.

Cardiologists have broad knowledge about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a range of heart conditions. These specialists know the ins and outs of heart attacks, heart rhythm disorders, heart valve problems and blood vessel disorders.

The increasing pace of medical knowledge and technology has led to subspecialists among cardiologists. For example, some cardiologists focus on treating and preventing heart attacks. Others focus on problems with heart rhythm, the commonest of which is atrial fibrillation. They can do tests to determine what is causing abnormal heart rhythms and perform electrical treatments to correct them.

Then there are the interventional cardiologists. These are specialists who can diagnose blocked arteries and treat them immediately with an angioplasty and stent.

My brother, “Chris,” is going through a divorce and lost his business. He now is lashing out at our mom and me when she spends time with me.

When I tried to express my sympathy, Chris attacked me via direct message, saying I have a “charmed life and don’t care about anyone – including him and our cashstrapped parents.”

It started when Dad gave me a car he wasn’t using before we learned about my brother’s misfortune. When I tried to return it, Dad refused.

Because I stopped responding to him on the internet, Chris now is complaining to Mom about my “selfishness.” He says if the situation was reversed, he would have moved heaven and Earth to help me.

Abby, Chris has a job. He lives with our folks and pays token rent. My husband and I work, but I have had a salary cut, we have two kids to support and a mortgage to pay.

We’re in no position to provide the financial assistance my brother expects. My parents suspect he’s still giving money to his soonto-be ex.

My husband says Chris is trying to manipulate me and I need to go on with my life, but I’m worried the longer this goes on, the harder it will be to heal the rift.

Imagine South’s shock when East produced the heart queen, cashed the diamond king, and led a club to West’s queen for down one.

A more skillful South would have led a low heart to dummy’s jack, not run the 10. Then East could not have afforded to win with the ace for fear that West had started with 10-doubleton.
