PANAMA CITY – Fireworks exploded as a huge container ship made the inaugural passage through the newly expanded Panama Canal on Sunday, formally launching the Central American nation’s multibillion-dollar bet on a bright economic future despite tough times for global shipping.

The Chinese-owned Cosco Shipping Panama went through the Atlantic locks at Agua Clara in the early morning, sailed the 50-mile (80-kilometer) passage to the Cocoli locks near the capital and passed into the Pacific in the evening, stewarded by tugboats and cheered by dignitaries and exuberant crowds of thousands.

DeKalb County Relay for Life raises money for cancer research

news@dailychronicle.com Cindy Green-Deutsch hates cancer with a passion.

The Shabbona resident and two-year kidney cancer survivor fights for a cure because she never wants anyone to have to hear the words, “It’s cancer.”

Green-Deutsch is the captain of Superheroes and Survivors, a team of 40 people who raised money and participated in the DeKalb County Relay for Life, which raises funds to support the American Cancer Society.

“I lost two grandparents to cancer and lots of people on our team have lost family members or friends,”she said.

“We come here to support, to walk and to renew friendships. Hopefully there’s one year when we won’t have to walk again.”

This is the 20th year of the DeKalb County relay, which was held from noon until midnight Saturday at the Sycamore High School track.

More than 250 participants on 25 teams raised about $55,000 as of Saturday afternoon. One person from each team walked the track at all times throughout the relay, while other events scheduled during the 12-hour event included a survivor’s lap, a luminaria ceremony at dusk, and a performance by the Northern Illinois Dance Center.

All the money raised goes to the American Cancer Society which funds important cancer research and various programs for patients and caregivers, including a free wig program and a volunteer program that offers patients free rides to treatment and Hope Lodges, where patients and families can stay for free while receiving treatment away from home.

Chris Atherton, event lead for the DeKalb County Relay for Life, said she’s confident the funds raised from the event have been making a positive impact on the fight against cancer. She said survival rates are increasing, and new therapies and medications are helping doctors better treat patients.

“I do this because I know there s a difference being made,” she said. “Patients today are surviving, and that is so important. Without these funds, they wouldn’t have the advances they have now. That’s the proof that all this hard work and funds we raise are worth it.

We’re so close to finding a cure.”

been at almost every DeKalb County relay. She said she’s been involved for so many years because she likes to support other survivors.

“I lost my father and my sister to cancer, and I’m working toward a cure,” she said. “One day, we’ll be cancer-free. It’s important to raise money to find a cure.”

Tammy Russell, 39, is a 31/2-year breast and thyroid cancer survivor.

She brought her husband and three children to the relay because she enjoys being with other survivors.

She said she lost her father to cancer when she was 21, but didn’t start coming until after she was diagnosed.

“This brings the community together and shows that cancer can touch everyone – young and old. It helps patients know they’re not alone,” she said.

Cherry Keller of Sycamore is the captain of the team Cancer is a word, not a sentence. This is her sixth relay and she has been involved because she lost her father and her husband to cancer. Her team raised $2,500 this

year, and has raised more than $20,000 in six years.

“I took care of my dad and husband and it’s not fun to watch them suffer,” she said. “Every time you turn around, someone else is diagnosed. I’m here to promote awareness and I want to help put an end to cancer.”

Leah Smith of DeKalb is a founding member of her team, Fight Like a Jedi.

Smith’s mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2008.

She’s been involved with the relay for five years, and this year her team raised $1,500.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize how many lives cancer touches,” she said. “It seems like it’s becoming more and more frequent. I want to let people know we’re willing to fight for a cure.”

Sandy Foord of Sycamore, co-lead for the event, has lost many friends and family members to cancer and she said being involved with the relay is her passion. This is her fifth year as co-lead and said all the hard work is worth it.

“I know one day there will be a cure, but we have to keep on fighting,” she said. “If we all pitch in, every little bit helps. Together we can make a difference.”

Cyclists descend on DeKalb for Bike MS

news@dailychronicle.com For four years, Aurora resident Cathy Lisac, 51, has participated in Bike MS: Tour de Farms to raise money for the National MS Society of Greater Chicagoland. But this year was bittersweet. Lisac, 51, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in November 2015, so this weekend’s ride had a special meaning for her.

“I did it four times, not knowing I had it. So there’s no way I couldn’t do it this year,” said Lisac, who rode 50 miles Saturday. “It’s fun, so that’s why I did it – just good karma. I’m still coming to terms with [having the disease].”

More than 1,500 cyclists descended on DeKalb and the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center on Saturday and Sunday for the 35th annual Bike MS. Participants had the option to ride 15, 30, 50, or up to 125 miles around DeKalb County, which has hosted the event for the past 10 years.

This year’s event raised about $1.5 million for the MS Society, which funds research and services for people affected by MS and their families.

Joe Lisac, Cathy’s husband, said this weekend’s ride was “ironic” for his wife, because four years later, she was diagnosed with the disease she is riding to cure. This was his first time as a volunteer at the event.

“I had to do this. It’s personal,” he said. “This is a disease that you can live with, but the goal is to prolong function and remain functional for as many years as possible. This event gives hope for her and for all these people here.”

MS is a disease of the central nervous system and affects people in very different ways. It can affect a person’s vision, balance, speech and cause temporary paralysis. While not usually fatal, the disease can have a devastating impact on quality of life. There are about 20,000 people living with MS in Illinois, and about 400,000 nationwide.

Women are two to three times more likely to be affected than men, and the average age at diagnosis is mid-to-late 20s.

“People can make a huge difference by participating in events like this to raise funds and awareness,” he said.

“There are many people living their best lives despite challenging symptoms. With disease-modifying drugs and healthy living, MS is very manageable.”

John Boden, 60, has been living with MS for 12 years, and has been very involved with the MS Society for 10 years. He said he’s happy to volunteer at Bike MS to thank the riders for all they do for people who are living with the disease.

“This is me giving back to all of the people who give so much to us,”

the Winthrop Harbor resident said.

“It makes me very happy because the money they raise goes into finding a cure for MS.” Many companies and corporations across Northern Illinois sponsored teams.

Dan Moore was riding with Morton Grove-based Bunzl Corp., which raised $4,800 this year. Moore had hoped to ride 100 miles Saturday, but only did 20 miles before his bike broke down.

Despite the mishap, he said he felt good to be making a difference.

“A lot of us have family members and friends with MS, so it’s a way for us to make a bigger impact by fundraising with our company,” he said.

“The MS Society does a good job of publicizing the importance of early diagnosis, improved therapies and advances in treatment. So this is a way for us to feel like we’re contributing to those efforts.”

Citgo has been sponsoring a team since 1997, when a group of employees wanted to help raise money for MS after a colleague was diagnosed.

Judy McCallum, the team’s captain, rode 35 miles Saturday and said her team raised about $33,000 this year.

“This is a disease that doesn’t have a cure yet, and we need to find one. It’s a horrible disease,” she said.

Chicago resident Drew Randall was riding with Team Spider Monkey, a Chicago-based cycling club. He said he doesn’t know anyone with MS, but it feels good to raise money to support research.

“It’s neat to hear what researchers have developed. Twenty years ago, they didn’t have these medicines,” he said. “Now when people are diagnosed, they have medicine to help prevent symptoms. If we can raise money doing something we love to do, it’s a great feeling.”

Sadly, a couple who had been training for the event were killed while riding Tuesday evening in Morris. Mark and Janice Wendling were struck by a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old. Both were wearing helmets, but Mark died at the scene while Janice died at the hospital later that evening.

Hazel M. Odom, 85, of Genoa died Friday, June 24, 2016, at OSF St. Anthony in Rockford.

She was born November 17, 1930, in Round Pond, AR. She was the daughter of James W. and Bobbie (Hefner) Nolen.

Hazel worked and was a union steward for Automatic Electric/GTE in Genoa, retiring after 33 years of service. She enjoyed gardening and making a variety of crafts, especially quilting and crocheting.

Survivors include three sons, Jimmy (Rhonda) Odom, Mike (Linda) Odom and Roger (Jean) Odom; one daughter, Melissa (Danny) Lawhorn; eleven grandchildren, Nicole, Jessica, Heather, Sarah, Chris, Kathy, Dustin, Tanner, Rachel, Skylar and Cage; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Travis, Jr.; and several

Greek Fest still draws a crowd $

news@daily-chronicle.com When asked why Merilyn May came to this year’s Greek Festival she matter-of-factly looked at the gryo sitting on the table in front of her.

Merilyn and her husband Jim, 72 and 69 of Rochelle, said they had never attended the annual Greek Festival, now in its 40th year, but, as have many, they heard it was an event their taste buds shouldn’t miss.

The festival serves as a fundraiser for the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in DeKalb and gives community members a chance to try authentic Greek food that might not be available on local Greek restaurant menus. It was held Saturday and Sunday.

“We’ve heard about it before, but just have never come over here,” Jim said while Greek instrumental music played in a booth a few feet away.

“The people seem happy, the food is good, what’s not to like?”

The celebration grew out of an annual picnic held by the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in DeKalb, said member Bill Vassilogrambros.

More and more people attended the event until the church decided to open it up to the public in 1976, Vassilogrambros said.

“People started bringing their relatives from town, relatives from out of town started coming and then people started bringing their friends,” Vassilogrambros said.

“Then people were like, ‘Jeez, I wish we could get Greek food,’ so we decided to start the festival.”

Dozens of patrons lined up in and around the Hopkins Park shelter house to purchase gyros, moussaka, Greek salad and tyropita (cheese pie).

Food was donated by Lukulos, The Junction Eating Place, Sycamore Parkway Restaurant, Sycamore Café and Egg Haven.

EDINBURG – As a first-year superintendent in the Edinburg schools, Fred Lamkey got an education he didn’t expect: traveling Route 29, which in various spots has been torn up for 15 years.

During his 20-mile school-day commute from Riverton, Lamkey sees the hazards of an endless construction project – highway lanes swerving and merging, constant and sometimes-confusing orange road-work signs and the impatience that goes with driving a two-lane road in a four-lane world.

“I’ve seen some people make some pretty dicey moves trying to get around one car to make progress,” Lamkey said.

If political infighting over a state budget continues back up the road in Springfield, the precarious state of the highway and many others will continue indefinitely.

The Illinois Department of Transportation warns that if there’s no budget agreement by the July 1 start of the fiscal year, not only will planned projects not start, but ongoing jobs representing a $2 billion investment will be shut down. That, officials said, means continued commuting headaches, safe-

Chicago pride parade pays tribute to Orlando victims

CHICAGO – Chicago’s 47th pride parade has taken place with the same enthusiasm of previous years despite tributes everywhere to victims of the Orlando nightclub attack two weeks.

Nearly 1 million spectators had been expected at Sunday’s event, and many marchers found ways to remember the 49 who died.

Two carried a banner saying, “Chicago-Orlando, In Solidarity.” Others sported T-shirts with the hashtag, “#WeAreOrlando.” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wore a shirt that read,

construction of Interstate 55 at Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, which began in May 2014 and is only 45 percent done.

Only $1 million has been spent of an authorized $33 million reconstruction of Route 34 from Yorkville to Oswego.

In Christian County, residents have wanted Route 29 widened to four lanes for decades.

The first-term Republican governor and Democrats who control the General Assembly have yet to agree to a budget deal, dating back a year. Road construction continued only because Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a separate infrastructure spending bill the Legislature sent him.

That’s not the case now. The two sides have yet to find common ground on anything, with Rauner insisting on business-friendly changes in law and political modifications such as officeholder term limits before agreeing to a budget, while Democrats said a mul-

Popular Chicago trail to be resurfaced over summer

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago is making improvements to a popular trail that runs along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

A statement from the mayor’s office said the improvements will include resurfacing and paving. It said seven miles of what is known as the Chicago Lakefront Trail will be resur-

IDOT spokesman Guy Tridgell said officials have been studying the cost of mothballing projects, but Blankenhorn said it would cost “tens of millions of dollars in avoidable costs just to ensure our work zones are safe” while idle. And there are logistics and other unknowns – for instance, whether a contractor that started the work is available to finish it when the money finally arrives.

“Stopping and starting projects is not as easy as flipping a switch,” Blankenhorn said.

Illinois police dog honored with funeral procession

TROY – A police dog that spent more than six years on

the job at a Metro East police department has been honored with a funeral procession after health problems led his owners to have him euthanized.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that Jac was 14 when Troy police Detective Mike Raymond and his family decided the dog’s deteriorating health meant he should be put down. The German shepherd could no longer easily walk.

Jac was euthanized Friday, and a number of officers and their dogs turned out for a procession between the veterinary clinic and a funeral home. The family had Jac cremated.

Jac was with the department in Pontoon Beach, 15 miles west of Troy until 2009.

Raymond said his young son and Jac had become “best friends.”

British political turmoil deepens after EU vote

LONDON – Britain’s shocking decision to remove itself from the European Union brought more political turmoil Sunday as Scotland’s leader threatened to block the move and the opposition Labour Party’s leader faced a coup attempt from his own legislators.

The sense of unease spread as European leaders stepped up the pressure on Britain to begin its complex exit from the 28-nation EU immediately, rather than wait several months as British Prime Minister David Cameron prefers.

The vote to leave sent the pound and global stock markets plunging. Britain’s Treasury said finance minister George Osborne would make an early morning statement Monday “to provide reassurance about financial and economic stability” before the London Stock Exchange reopens.

The leaders of the successful campaign to leave the EU stayed largely out of the public eye, as opponents accused them of lacking a plan to calm the crisis the result has triggered. In his first statement since Friday morning, “leave” leader and former London Mayor Boris Johnson used his column in the Daily Telegraph newspaper to urge unity and say “the negative consequences (of the vote) are being wildly overdone.”

He said Britain would forge “a new and better relationship with the EU – based on free trade and partnership, rather than a federal system.”

The vote, however, risks causing a political schism in the United Kingdom. Sturgeon said she believes Scotland’s approval is required for the move, but conceded the British government would likely take “a very different view.”

Thursday’s U.K.-wide vote to leave the EU was very unpopular in Scotland, where 62 percent cast ballots to stay, and Sturgeon said she is studying ways to keep Scotland part of the EU bloc.

Sturgeon also has said another referendum on Scottish independence from Britain is “highly likely” as a result of Britain’s EU vote. A Scottish referendum in 2014 ended with voters deciding to remain in Britain, but analysts believe Britain’s withdrawal from the EU may strengthen the independence movement.

In Northern Ireland, which also is part of the U.K., Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said his priority is forging “special arrangements” to enable Northern Ireland to maintain its EU ties. Some Brexit opponents have also talked of trying to use Northern Ireland’s Assembly to try to block Britain’s departure.

Northern Ireland voters also expressed a preference for keeping Britain in the EU. The unhappiness with the results in both Scotland and Northern Ireland is adding to the sense that the Brexit vote may over time lead to the breakup of the United Kingdom.

Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers, Cameron’s lead official in Belfast, played down the suggestion that the Scottish Parliament or the Northern Ireland Assembly had the standing to prevent a British departure from the EU. She said decision-making power resides solely in the British Parliament, which is expected to abide by the results of the referendum, which showed 52 percent of British voters wanted out.

“In the weeks and months ahead, we will be working with both the Scottish government and the Northern Ireland executive on all these matters,” she told BBC. “But ultimately it is (the British) Parliament’s decision.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Ten people were wounded – two of them with life-threatening injuries – Sunday when counter-protesters clashed with members of a white nationalist group that planned to rally outside the California state Capitol building in Sacramento, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol Officer George Granada said about 30 members of the Traditionalist Worker Party were gathering for a rally around noon Sunday when they were met by about 400 counter-protesters and a fight broke out.

As people tried to leave the area, smaller fights broke out, Granada said.

Authorities were investigating what happened, but no arrests have been made.

The Capitol was on lockdown until protesters cleared the area.

Videos from the melee posted on social media showed mounted police officers dispersing a group of mostly young people, some with their faces covered, while some throw stones toward a man holding a stick and being shielded by police officers in riot gear.

Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Chris Harvey said nine

A post recently uploaded to site of the Traditionalist Youth Network said TWP members planned to march in Sacramento to protest against globalization and in defense of their right to free expression. They said they expected to be outnumbered 10-to-1 by counter-protesters.

“We concluded that it was time to use this rally to make a statement about the precarious situation our race is in,” the Traditionalist Youth Network statement said. “With our folk on the brink of becoming a disarmed, disengaged, and disenfranchised minority, the time to do something was yesterday!”

A discouraged electorate is hardly a surprise

The picture that emerges from the latest Marquette University Law School Poll more than four months before election day is of a discouraged, disillusioned electorate – a bunch of voters who doesn’t much like their choices.

This isn’t surprising, given that one of the candidates for president has done anything he can to coarsen the tone of politics in the nation. As a result, 74 percent of independents in the MU poll said they are uncomfortable with the idea of Donald Trump as president. Smart people.

But the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, doesn’t fare that much better. Of that same group, 64 percent felt the same way about Clinton. In fact, the leader among independents was, essentially, none of the above. The combined 35 percent of those who said “neither” or “didn’t know” outpolls either Trump or Clinton.

As we have written previously, Trump has shown himself unfit for office – his lame attempts at political gain out of the tragedy of the terrorist killings in Orlando is only the latest of his many transgressions. He is proudly uninformed, promising only the shelter of a supposed strong man. But Clinton has problems of her own. She has a long record of secrecy, going back to the earliest days of her husband President Bill Clinton’s administration. And fairly or not, many voters remain wary of her.

Two more polarizing political figures rarely have shared the same political stage.

In the Marquette poll, Clinton leads Trump by seven points among registered voters and by nine points among likely voters. Trump’s prospects among Republicans have improved with a bare majority now viewing him favorably, but 35 percent of state GOP voters do not – an astonishing statistic this deep into the campaign.

The shame in all this, of course, is that voters here and across the country deserve a real discussion with real proposals about the most important issues facing the nation: national security and terrorism, the economy, crumbling infrastructure, trade. They are getting none of that from Trump, whose prescriptions border on the absurd.

Clinton, at least, offers deep experience and thoughtful ideas for discussion, although whether she will be able to engage Trump is anyone’s guess.

The only good news amid all this cynicism is that there remains plenty of time for both candidates to have an authentic discussion. And it still appears that Wisconsin, a longtime battleground state, still might play a key role in determining the winner. President Barack Obama is expected to campaign for Clinton in the state in the coming days as she tries to consolidate support from independents and supporters of her rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

It’s disheartening to see so many clearly disaffected voters. But given the tenor of the campaign so far – and what’s likely to come – it’s hardly a surprise.

5 things Clinton shouldn’t do at the Democratic convention Just what the Republican convention in Cleveland might look like has been the subject of much morbid speculation. But as Politico and other outlets have started to report on Hillary Clinton’s plans for the Democratic convention in Philadelphia, it’s worth thinking about what she shouldn’t do. As with everything about the campaign, the portable insanity generator that is Donald Trump’s operation shouldn’t be a cause for complacency, and the Democrats should avoid these missteps: 1 No skits: As I’ll discuss below, I think humor ought to be carefully rationed on the campaign trail in order to be effective. And in particular, I think Clinton should avoid doing anything as risky and potentially catastrophic as taking part in schtick on the convention stage. Earlier this year, her participation in a Bill deBlasio riff on “CP time,” a phrase that normally means “colored people time,” and is a reference to folks running late for things, but that Clinton tried to rescue as “cautious politician time,” was a minor, but embarrassing, disaster.

2 No celebrities with potentially embarrassing positions:

I can understand if, in an effort to build party unity at the convention, Clinton and her team consider reaching out to some of Bernie Sanders’ most visible supporters in Hollywood. But just as it can be dangerous to give Clint Eastwood a chance to monologue, letting loose a celebrity with dodgy ideas risks a mixed message, or messy day-after news coverage. Clinton and the convention need to research the things their famous guests believe and espouse before handing them speaking slots.

If Democrats would like the many actors and directors who support them to be good surrogates, they should make sure they have high standards for who they put on convention stages.

3 No celebrities who will make it look like you’re trying

too hard to pander to the youth: There are few things

that make my skin crawl more in the spaces where politics and culture overlap than watching politicians try to be cool. Politics isn’t cool, and more importantly, it shouldn’t be: The process of making policy and leading the nation shouldn’t be totally subject to whims and constantly-churning trends.

So in choosing artists to perform at the convention, Clinton and the Democrats should calibrate carefully. The convention doesn’t need YouTube stars, or Ariana Grande, or anyone else who might be invited in a transparent attempt to draw younger eyeballs to the evening proceedings. Instead, Clinton and her team should go for solid performers with strong brands, eliminating the chances of a lip-sync problem or an off-key singer.

4 Not too many dad jokes: I cannot tell a lie; when Clinton declared last week that “Trump has written a lot of books about business – but they all seem to end at Chapter 11,” I giggled. But if it’s a reasonably effective burn highlighting the extent to which Trump’s business success is essentially phony, it’s also a total Dad Joke, a corny riff that practically demands a reaction from the audience.

Clinton’s not an inherently magnetic speaker, although she is funnier than she gets credit for. For her humor to work, however, it should be rationed.

5 No stem-winders by Bill Clinton: Former President Bill Clinton was a famously charismatic campaigner back in the day. But his stump skills didn’t seem to land as well on the campaign trail this time around, and Clinton can be notoriously windy. I can imagine the Big Dog is hard to corral. But maybe he can be cautioned about the dangers of getting mired in grievance about past elections and, most of all, overshadowing his wife. And if not, schedule him carefully.

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker There are encouraging signs that Americans are more honorable, rational and resilient than that.

After Trump’s rancid repetitions of his earlier call for a ban on Muslim immigration and his insistence that the president comprises a fifth column (and that came after a week of racist rants against a Latino federal judge, Gonzalo Curiel), Trump’s unfavorable ratings have soared and Clinton has gained support. A Washington Post/ABC News poll conducted in the immediate aftermath of the Orlando massacre shows that 70 percent of voters view Trump unfavorably, an unprecedented unpopularity for a presumptive nominee.

Clinton no doubt takes comfort in that – as do I. But she shouldn’t bet that Trump’s latest outbursts will automatically consign him to defeat in November. After all, her husband, Bill Clinton, perhaps the most astute politician of his generation, once said: “When people are insecure, they’d rather have somebody who is strong and wrong than someone who’s weak and right.”

Many mainstream, middle-of-theroad voters know they ought to reject

Trump, but that doesn’t mean they will. That’s especially true because of the nature of the threat presented by homegrown lone wolves, people who are born in this country and who present themselves to most observers as law-abiding and patriotic.

Clinton will have to find a campaign footing that is more anchored in voters’ concerns about national security than her Democratic primary campaign was; in response to a sharp challenge from Sen. Bernie Sanders, she focused largely on economic issues.

For the general election, she will have to devote more of her energy to confronting Americans’ insecurities and fears of terrorism – overblown though they may be.

Obama hasn’t done that as well as he might have. The president has done much to improve actual security; he not only sent U.S. Navy SEALS after Osama bin Laden, but he has also commanded a drone program that has killed far more terrorists than his predecessor did.

But Obama, a committed rationalist, has eschewed the role of Daddy-inchief – the fierce protector who makes his charges feel safe by attending to their emotional needs. He believes that American adults ought to know better than to freak out over remote risks. Yet, it is part of his job as a politician to tend to his constituents’

feelings, including those that are not entirely rational. (In his defense, Obama remembers that the invasion of Iraq was driven, in large part, by the irrational fears and outsized anger that followed 9/11, when the pursuit of bin Laden was abandoned for the pursuit of Saddam Hussein. Never mind that Saddam was no holy warrior or fan of al-Qaida. He was Arab and, therefore, suspect. The consequences of George W. Bush’s decision to depose Saddam live on in the widespread destabilization of the Middle East and the rise, ironically, of ISIS.) Still, Clinton might take a lesson from Obama’s latest rebuke of her rival.

In a speech a few days after the Orlando attack, the president – clearly upset by Trump’s outrageous assaults on American values – abandoned his customary reserve to denounce Islamophobia, reiterate his commitment to fighting terrorism and brilliantly defend diversity, pluralism and freedom of religion. His passion radiated strength, his righteous indignation reinforced his ideals.

The American public will clearly stand behind strong and right.

Fear, a complex web of neurological responses designed to aid survival, may well be the most powerful of human emotions.

The reactions inspired by fear may not be entirely rational. Indeed, they may be the opposite: a suite of thoughtless, primal, survival-of-the-fittest impulses that aided humankind thousands of years ago, when our ancestors were as much prey as predator, but which make holding together a modern civilization more difficult.

Donald Trump has a canny, gut-level appreciation for the power of fear, as he has shown through his reckless and noxious tactics since the terrorist atrocity in an Orlando nightclub that left 50 people, including the accused terrorist, dead.

Trump has hurled about the most vile and mendacious charges, suggesting, with barely a wink, that President Barack Obama is in league with Islamist terrorists. He has congratulated himself for his smears against Muslims. He has reveled in rejecting basic American values and constitutional restraints.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee is betting that even decent Americans are so frightened by the latest terrorist assault that they will abandon their previous reservations about him and go with the guy who promises security.

Is he right?

Barry Jurgensen’s Walk Forever Free journey traces the known route of two teenage girls, Eliza and Celia, who escaped their slave master in Nebraska City, Nebraska, and found freedom in Chicago in 1858. In true Under-

ground Railroad fashion, Jurgensen’s success depends on the organization and kindness of strangers in the counties he crosses and the communities he visits.

Jurgensen started his journey in Nebraska City on June 1 and will walk from Rochelle to DeKalb along Route 38 beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday. He said he travels about 3 miles an hour and plans to arrive in DeKalb about 4 p.m.

Walk Forever Free journey for as long as they like on that or any day.

During a 7 p.m. Tuesday presentation at the corner of First Street and Lincoln Highway in downtown DeKalb, Jurgensen will speak of his journey and the issues of slavery, past and present. All are welcome to attend to meet Jurgensen and learn more about his fight against modern day slavery, often referred to as human trafficking.

In addition to raising awareness, Jurgensen is raising money to be donated to the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives (fdfi.org), dedicated to “advancing freedom through knowledge and strategic action.” His goal is to raise $50 a mile.

Lunch at the Little House event set DAILY CHRONICLE The popular 1891 Victorian playhouse on the grounds of the Ellwood House Museum will be open for play during the third annual Lunch at the Little House event.

From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 9, children of all ages and their families are invited to the Ellwood House Museum to celebrate the 125th birthday of the Little House and enjoy toys and games from the 19th century.

Reproduction historic toys and games will be stationed at several locations near the Little House, each accompanied by historical information and instructions. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch to eat on the grounds of Ellwood Park. In the event of bad weather, the program will be moved indoors to the Hearthside Room in the Visitor Center. The program is free but attendees are asked to register in advance.

Presenter Craig Pierce will bring Mathewson’s compelling life as “America’s First Sports Hero” into focus at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at Somonauk Public Library, 700 E. LaSalle St. “America’s First Sports Hero” highlights Mathewson’s remarkable accomplishments

on and off the field: college athlete, Hall of Fame baseball player, writer, product spokesman, WWI veteran and much more.

Along with the storybook triumphs come tragedy. Mathewson died of tuberculosis at 45.

Pierce calls his presentation an experience rather than a lecture. “It’s as much a glimpse into turn-of-the-century America as anything else,” Pierce said.

A charge up the lower bracket that lasted all day ended with tears at dusk as the 14U Storm fell, 4-3, in six innings to the McHenry County Heatwave to take second place in the Storm Dayz tournament on a hot Sunday at Sycamore Park.

After being knocked into the lower bracket after the first game of the tournament – a loss to the Crush Tidal Wave on Friday – the Storm rallied for six consecutive wins, in-

To reach the game against the Heatwave, the Storm defeated the Belvidere Blasters on Saturday before going on a run on Sunday of knocking out Illinois Gold, the Stateline Fury and beating the Crush Tidal Wave, 8-0, Lemont, 3-1, and the Grayslake Pride, 5-2.

Against the Heatwave, Faith Reynolds went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a double, Madison Parks was 2 for 3 with a run and Amber Godinsky went 2 for 3 with a double. The Storm took a 3-0 lead after an RBI single by Reynolds in the top of the third. They had runners on second and third with one out in the top of the fifth in a 3-3 contest, but the Heatwave escaped the jam.

In the win over Grayslake, Parks threw another strong game in the circle, tossing a complete game with two runs on five hits while striking out seven – retiring the final seven batters of

the game. Reynolds went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two doubles, Haley Westburg went 2 for 3 with an RBI infield single and Mindy Smits scored a pair of runs.

They were sharp defensively against Grayslake, with Godinsky’s

strong play at third base leading the Storm, who didn’t commit an error in the game.

“She made some big stops in that last inning to get us out of it,” Paul Parks said of Godinsky. “We had a solid week-

end. There’s nothing to be ashamed of. We just came up a run short [in the championship game]. It happens.”

The Storm jumped out early against Lemont, scoring three runs in the first inning behind a two-run double by Ashley Peterson and Reynolds allowed just one run in 5 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts. Lemont loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the final inning, but Parks came in relief to get the final out.

“We had a circle [on a piece of paper] that was broken down with eight pieces and after each win, we scratched off one piece of the pie,” Paul Parks said.

“We just broke it down into chunks and took it one game at a time and the girls did a good job with their effort.

We knew that if we didn’t take care of business in each game, we wouldn’t make it to the next one.”

Elsewhere in the tournament, Stateline Fury won the championship at 10U, with the Thunderstix winning 12U, the Crush Tidal Wave took 16U and the Black Widows took first at 18U.

For seven innings, Sale held the powerful Blue Jays scoreless on five hits, but he had defensive help.

In the first inning, Eaton’s throw from right got Josh Donaldson out at second trying to stretch a single. In the fourth and seventh, the Sox infield turned rally-killing double plays.

“Especially in the first inning when you’re still trying to find yourself a little bit, and then double plays,’’ Sale said, lauding his teammates.

“When I’m on the baseball field, there’s nothing I love more than winning. A close second is keeping guys in the bullpen, too,’’ he added of resting the taxed relief corps. “They’ve been working their butts off and used a lot and doing a great job.’’

An eight-inning effort by Chris Sale was important Sunday on its own – but it meant even more for the White Sox’s strained bullpen.

The workload has been heavy for the relievers of late, and it has come with consequences.

Relievers have been summoned to work at least three innings in 15 of the last 20 games, with six of those involving working four or more innings.

“When you’re calling on them that early [in games] and you have to fill that many innings, the workload just piles up,’’ manager Robin Ventura said.

“They’ve been used quite a bit. I think we’ve had too many games where we’ve had to bring guys in in the fifth inning.

That takes its toll.’’

David Robertson pitched the ninth Sunday for his 20th save, and no one else needed to warm up.

“With the way the bullpen was, [Sale] was fantastic,’’ Ventura said, adding Monday’s off day also will be welcome rest for the relievers.

“They need it,’’ Ventura said. “It’s no secret that [Saturday, a 10-8 loss] quite a few guys weren’t available. They need a break. It’s that simple.’’

Solid in center: J.B. Shuck was projected out of spring training to be a reliable pinch hitter and fourth outfielder in waiting at Class AAA Charlotte.

Since being recalled May 20, his defensive work in center field has changed that perspective.

He also has contributed some key hits of late, including another home run on Sunday after hitting his first on Saturday.

“I think when you start looking at trying to fill different spots, we need him to be out there,’’ said Ventura, who added Shuck has “stabilized’’ the center field spot since Austin Jackson suffered a torn meniscus in the left knee. “We are better with him there and keeping Adam [Eaton] in right.

“I know [Shuck] is a good corner guy, but I think Adam is much better at right, so when you get a guy who can play center, who can put it in play and grind out at-bats, it’s good stuff from him.’’

Shuck, who has started 12 of the last 16 games, has a chance to remain with the team when Jackson returns, Ventura said.

Getting in the swing: Justin Morneau will continue taking batting practice this week and on the road next week before a decision is made on when he might start a rehab assignment.

What does it mean to a team when its ace takes the mound?

“You know you have a great chance to win, and especially with Chris Sale,’’ White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton said. “Any team has their top three [starters] and they’ll always be giving their best – but especially with Sale.

“We don’t want to put any more pressure on him because he puts a lot on himself, but you know you’re going to have a great chance [to win].’’

But the “Sale’’ effect can work two ways.

“When you face an ace, you’re excited,’’ Eaton added. “I think some of your best at-bats come when you’re facing a top guy. When you know you have to bring your ‘A’ game, it helps you focus. You see a mountain, and you want to climb it.’’

There was no chance for that Sunday for the Toronto Blue Jays against the major league’s victory leader.

“He’s one of the best in the game,’’ Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of the lefty, who notched his 13th win in the 5-2 victory.

“It’s obvious when you watch him pitch. He’s got a dynamite fastball, a good changeup, and he’s got that sweeping breaking ball that he’ll throw that will run down and in to those righties.

“He’s definitely one of the best, no

The Blue Jays ended the shutout bid in the eighth with solo homers from Troy Tulowitzki and Junior Lake, but Sox outfielder J.B. Shuck extended the lead in the eighth with a home run.

Ventura had closer David Robertson (20th save) finish things to secure the series win.

The victory gave the Sox their first back-to-back series wins since April and lifted their record back to .500 (38-38).

Sale accounts for about a third of those wins so far, and he is the first Sox pitcher to collect 13 wins before the All-Star break since Jon Garland did it in 2005.

But talk of starting the All Star game for the American League squad is fodder for others.

“I’m not here to try to prove anything to anybody,’’ Sale said, deferring praise to his teammates. “The guys are in your corner and are fighting for you and believe in you like my guys do, and it gives me the confidence to be the best I can.

“I feel good, there’s no doubt about that. [Catchers] Dioner Navarro and [Alex] Avila have really kind of carried me through these games. They know what’s working on a certain day and they know what fingers to put down. You have to credit them as well.’’

MIAMI – Maybe the Cubs wouldn’t have done much against Jose Fernandez regardless of their own problems.

But by the time the Marlins ace rolled through the Cubs’ lineup like a Toro through dandelions Sunday for a 6-1 victory over the Cubs, every weakness and deficit on a suddenly depleted Cubs roster was exposed.

“It’s one of those patches we’re running through right now,” said manager Joe Maddon, whose team has lost six of its last seven – a stretch that started the day after leadoff hitter Dexter Fowler (hamstring) went on the DL. In five of those losses, the Cubs have scored a total of 10 runs. They’ve also broken down enough in the field to give up six unearned runs the last three games alone. And a struggling, beat-up bullpen has allowed 13 runs (11 earned) in the last five games.

Utility infielder Tommy La Stella (hamstring) and reliever Clayton Richard (blister/torn nail) both left Sunday to join Class AAA Iowa to start minor-league rehab assignments.

And the Cubs remain optimistic Fowler’s return will coincide roughly with his 15-day eligibility date.

For now, they head to Cincinnati staring at their worst seven-game stretch since a seven-game losing streak during their last-place 2014 season.

“Ooh, yeah, we better call in reinforcements and [hit] that panic button,” said sarcastic first-baseman Anthony Rizzo, who missed the first two games of the four-game Marlins series because of

lower-back soreness.

“We put ourselves in good position to go through these stretches,” said Rizzo, who led off the second with one of just four hits off Fernandez on Sunday.

“I’m not saying it’s OK. I’m not saying it’s fun. But it’s part of the season, and that’s just the way this game is.”

In fact, the Cubs will wake up Monday morning still with the best winning percentage in the majors, if only part of a closely bunched pack of leaders that

include the surging Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants.

Beyond getting healthy again, the Cubs’ bigger-picture concern might be the bullpen woes that have made low-scoring and close wins a relative rarity this season.

“I think what we did really good last year was win a lot of the one-run games and the lower-scoring games, but this year it seems like the complete opposite,” said third baseman Kris Bryant, who was in the middle of two plays that contributed to turning a 1-1 game in the sixth into an eventual loss.

The Cubs won 17 games last year when they scored two or fewer runs, eight before the end of June. Five of the 17 were 1-0 games.

This year it’s four. Much of that’s a function of a higher–scoring lineup this season.

But the bullpen also has been a factor in that difference, and this difference: The Cubs are 10-11 in one-run games this year (2-2 in extra-inning games), compared with 34-21 last year (and 13-5).

“I’ve always said you win championships by winning games 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2,” Maddon said. “And we will.”

Arrieta returns Monday after Cubs’ worst week in 2 years

MIAMI – If Jake Arrieta is going to come to the Cubs’ rescue after their worst week of baseball in almost two years, he probably couldn’t ask for a better place to do the hero thing – and fix some of his own issues along the way.

Against the free-falling, last-place Reds, the National League’s reigning Cy Young Award winner makes his first start in Cincinnati on Monday since his no-hitter there in April.

Trying to right a Cubs stretch that includes six losses in the last seven games, Arrieta also is coming off a short-inning loss to the Cardinals, after which he vowed to make what he called an “easy fix.”

Mostly that’s about rediscovering enough command early in counts to get ahead, stay ahead, make hitters swing and keep his pitch counts lower.

Arrieta has lasted just five innings in five of his 11 starts since the no-hitter in Cincinnati.

“I don’t know if that’s going to be cured right now, but I have a lot of faith that he will figure out the command on his fastball, and then we’ll keep moving

it on forward from there,” said manager Joe Maddon, who pointed out that Arrieta’s historic 20-start run to finish last season (0.86 ERA in those starts) began about this time in the season.

“A lot of times, history repeats itself with these guys,” Maddon said. “I’m not worried about it. His stuff’s been great.”

J-Hey, say what?: The open secret that is Jason Heyward’s nearly half-season struggle to hit since signing a mega-deal with the Cubs took on surreal proportions the first three games of the Marlins series – with four pitches in particular driven as hard as any he’s hit this season, without a hit to show for any.

He was 1-for-12 in the series until a pair of singles in Sunday’s finale – then lined another drive toward the wall in right that was caught by a leaping Giancarlo Stanton.

Heyward won’t make excuses for the .229 average he took into Sunday, but those four bolts the previous three days offer some insight.

His average on balls in play (BABIP) is a below-average .280, suggesting a bad-luck component to his struggles.

That BABIP is his lowest since 2011 (.260), when he batted a career-low .227 in 128 games.

“He’s been very unlucky,” Maddon said. “I just want him to keep doing what he’s doing. He handles it well.

“It’s all about geometry sometimes.”

Notes: Right-hander Adam Warren threw 59 pitches and faced 16 batters Saturday night in his first start for Class AAA Iowa as the Cubs stretch him out for a spot start before the AllStar break to spell the rotation during a 24-games-in-24-days stretch. He pitched 32⁄3 innings with three strikeouts, four walks, three hits and two runs allowed.

• Six-time All-Star closer Joe Nathan (early 2015 Tommy John surgery) made his second minor-league rehab appearance Saturday for AA Tennessee, pitching one inning with a strikeout and allowing one hit – a solo home run.

• Cubs starter Jason Hammel, who had one of four hits Sunday off Miami’s All-Star starter Jose Fernandez, is 9-for-32. His .281 average ranks third among pitchers.

• Sunday marked the eighth time this season the Cubs faced a former All-Star pitcher in a Hammel start.

The Cubs’ right-hander, who could be in line for his first All-Star selection, is 3-2 with a 2.59 ERA in those starts.

“We have enough cap room now,” general manager Stan Bowman said.

“We don’t have a salary-cap problem.”

Free agency opens on Friday, and teams are able to contact players in the meantime. Bowman would love to be a major player for a big top-line wing such as Milan Lucic. He’d love to be able to bring back Andrew Ladd. He’d be thrilled to bring in a No. 4 defenseman such as Dan Hamhuis, whom he tried and failed to get at the trade deadline in March.

But the Hawks don’t have the cap space for any of that. So Bowman will be simply dipping his toes in the free-agency waters, not making a big splash.

The one name to look out for is Brian Campbell, the 37-year-old former Hawks defenseman who’s coming off a massive eight-year contract that netted him more than $57 million. At this stage of his career, Campbell doesn’t need the money. He wants to win. And that’s the built-in advantage the Hawks have – veteran free agents looking to make one last run at the Stanley Cup look to Chicago as the place to be, and are willing to play for less money to do it.

If the Hawks can convince Campbell

to come back to Chicago for Brad Richards-like money – maybe a two-year deal worth about $4 million tops – that would boost the back end while leaving enough money to fill out the forward group with young and cheap players. Having Trevor van Riemsdyk stabilize the third pairing rather than play on the second would be a huge difference-maker for the Hawks, who never quite managed to fill Johnny Oduya’s skates.

As for the forwards, well, brace yourselves. The bottom six is going to be dicey – fascinating, but dicey. Does Bowman try to bring back underwhelming deadline acquisitions Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann at a bargain rate?

Can he sign a Sam Gagner or a P.A. Parenteau for a song? Or does he promote within and take his chances with highly touted prospects such as Tyler Motte and Nick Schmaltz? Can Marcus Kruger thrive on the third line, allowing Dennis Rasmussen to be the everyday fourthline center? Or can Ryan Hartman be Andrew Shaw?

They’ll all probably get a shot at some point. There are three, maybe four, everyday forward spots unclaimed.

“I think more than ever we’re going to have opportunities,” Bowman said.

“There’s going to have to be some young players that we’ve had in our system take that step, and I think there’s a lot of excitement from our perspective. Those guys have been waiting their turn.”

Gar Forman insisted on draft night that the Bulls have every intention to sit down with free agent Joakim Noah and discuss the future come July 1.

They need not bother.

A source close to the situation not only shot down a report last month that the Bulls and Noah were having early “positive dialogue’’ on coming back together, but reiterated a Sun- Joakim Noah Times story from late May in which Noah was telling teammates that he had no trust in the direction the front office was taking the team.

So chalk up Forman’s optimism to the Bulls general manager simply trying to win the press conference.

Not an easy mountain to climb for the organization these days.

According to the source, Noah and his agent, Bill Duffy, have already been gathering information on possible destinations, with a specific priority list in mind. First and foremost, Noah wants a chance to win. Followed closely by a chance to start, as well as finish games, and also a team that will continue to get behind his Noah’s Arc Foundation.

While several on the outside have speculated that Noah would simply go for the money, the source called that “naïve.’’

“They obviously don’t know Jo’s make-up,’’ the source said.

The New York Knicks were always a possibility for Noah, but really jumped into the picture on Wednesday, after acquiring Noah’s good friend and longtime teammate, Derrick Rose, in a

five-player deal.

The idea that the Washington Wizards were preparing a max offer for Noah has since been shot down, but D.C. is still interested in nabbing the veteran.

Torn meniscus does not always require surgery if pain not present Dear Dr. K: My knees hurt a lot, more on the left. At 76 years young, I guess I should expect that. An MRI scan shows I have a “torn meniscus” in my right knee, and arthritis in both knees. Is there anything to be done?

Dear Reader: Before I can answer your interesting question, I need to provide some basic information. The meniscus is a crescent-shaped disk of fibrous tissue and cartilage. Each knee has two menisci located between the thighbone (femur) and the lower leg bone (tibia).

The menisci act as shock absorbers.

They protect the other cartilage tissue that covers the end portions of the femur and tibia. The kind of injury most likely to tear a meniscus is a twisting injury of the knee.

Often this occurs during sports.

In older people, however, the meniscus becomes more prone to injury; it can tear for no apparent reason. A torn meniscus becomes more common as we get older.

When a meniscus tears, you sometimes know it: There’s a “pop” or a twinge of discomfort in the knee. But sometimes there are no symptoms when one gets torn.

After a meniscus tears, you can have different symptoms. Some of my patients with a torn meniscus suddenly have trouble kneeling or squatting. It hurts when they do it, and it really hurts when they try to stand back up.

Other patients report the knee sometimes “locks” or “catches” just during walking. Sometimes they say the knee will just give out on them. When that happens, they almost always have experienced pain just before the knee gave out.

Sometimes it’s even more subtle: A person has the impression something is

If a meniscus gets badly torn, it provides less protection to the ends of the bones.

This can lead to osteoarthritis, as was diagnosed on your magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI). Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis.

Should you have treatment on your “good” knee? Surprisingly, meniscal tears are nearly as common in people who have no knee pain as in those with pain. MRIs are so sensitive they often detect abnormalities that are not causing any problems to the patient.

Doctors always should treat patients, not X-rays or MRIs. Since your right knee feels fine, there is no need to treat the meniscal tear.

If you had pain – or if you develop pain – the decision would be more difficult. It would be hard to know whether your pain was caused by the arthritis, the tear or both. If your symptoms were mild, it probably would be best to treat the arthritis first.

If your symptoms got worse, you could consider meniscus surgery, which can help relieve the pain.

That’s the long answer to your question.

Here’s the short version: If it ain’t hurting much, don’t fix it.

In my community, leash laws rarely are enforced, and it’s common to see dogs running loose in city parks. The result is an increase in dogfights and unwelcome contact with people. Coyote attacks also are common here in the West, and small dogs often are the victims.

If other dog owners kept their dogs leashed, I wouldn’t have to worry about them bounding up to mine and the ensuing dogfight that follows when my dogs interpret that behavior as a threat. Remember, just because you think your dog is friendly, that doesn’t mean all the other dogs are. If people would just keep their dogs leashed, it would avert a myriad of problems for the dogs and their owners. – Marge In Phoenix Dear Marge: I’m glad you wrote. Unless dog owners are in an area where it is designated their animals can run loose – such as an offleash dog park – their pets should be leashed for their own safety as well as that of others.

Off-leash dog parks (and beaches) provide a place for pets to exercise and socialize while also encouraging compliance with leash and “scoop” laws.

Pet owners must remember coyotes are intelligent and highly adaptable. While they mostly do their hunting at night, they also have been known to “grab a snack” during the day if they happen to be hungry – to the dismay of owners of small pets. And when I say “grab,” I’m being literal. It has happened in an instant in front of the owner.

Dear Abby: I’m moving in a few weeks and have asked my girlfriend of two years to move in with me. She’s considering it, but I suspect she’s unsure about it because I am pretty messy at times -- underwear tossed on the floor, plates piling up in the kitchen every other day, etc.

I know if I could get my act together she would happily move in, which is something I really want. Can you please give me some tips on becoming better at cleaning? These are some basics: Buy a large wicker basket and keep it in a corner of your bedroom or closet. When the underwear and socks come off, toss them into the basket instead of on the floor.

When you remove your pants and shirt, instead of throwing them over a chair, hang them up.

After you’re finished eating, either put your plate, silverware, etc. into the dishwasher or hand-wash them immediately and put them where they belong. Try it for a week, and you’ll be amazed at how tidy your place will be.

This report is intended to provide you with important information about your drinking water and the efforts made by the water system to provide safe drinking water.

Source of Drinking Water The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers , lakes , streams, ponds, reservoirs , springs , and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material , and can pickup substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: • Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

• Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.

• Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban storm water runoff, and residential uses.

• Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals , which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production , and can also come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff, and septic systems .

• Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally-occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

Drinking water, including bottled water may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by allying the EPAs Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791 In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population.

Immuno -Compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Save Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791) If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children.

Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. We cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available form the Safe Drinking water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Source of Water : KIRKLAND Based on information obtained in a Well Site Survey by the Illinois EPA, several potential secondary sources are located within 1,000 feet of the wells. The facility has provided additional information on the following potential sources regarding source name or ownership changes : Kirkland Quick Stop is now Kirkland Marathon, the Johnson Leonard property is now Hines Lumber, and Farm Sales and Service Incorporated is now Nesterowicz and Associates. As mentioned above in the “Source of Water Supply” section, the Illinois EPA has determined that two (2) of Kirkland’s wells (railroad well and well H2) are potentially susceptible to contamination based on a number of criteria including; monitoring conducted at the wells; monitoring conducted at the entry point to the distribution system; and available hydrogeologic data on the wells such as the wells receiving the source water from a highly fractured bedrock aquifer . It should be noted however, that while these two (2) wells are considered “susceptible” to contamination, per the “Source Water Quality” section, sample results to date have not identified quantifiable levels of any contaminant of concern.

Well 13 receives its source water from a confined, deep bedrock aquifer, and therefore is not considered “susceptible” to contamination at this time. Furthermore, in accordance with the U. S. EPA’s Ground Water Rule, the Illinois EPA has determined that both the railroad well and well #2 are potentially vulnerable to viral contamination. While the potential for viral contamination exists, it should be noted that the Village’s source water for the railroad well and well 82 has not indicated any bacteriological contamination to date. As stated in previous sections of this document, these wells utilize source water from an “unconfined”, highly fractured bedrock aquifer, and without documented, mapped subsurface hydraulic conditions, it is therefore considered vulnerable to viral contamination. At the time of this writing, the Village is actively researching the option of utilizing the Vulnerability Waiver process for well #2. In regards to well #3, the source water is not considered vulnerable to viral contamination. This determination is based upon the evaluation of the following criteria during the Vulnerability Waiver process: well 83 is properly constructed with sound integrity and proper siting conditions; a hydrogeologic barrier exists which should prevent pathogen movement; all potential routes and sanitary defects have been mitigated such that the source water is adequately protected; monitoring data did not indicate a history of disease outbreak; and the sanitary survey of the water supply did not indicate a viral contamination threat. Because well #3 is constructed in a “confined” aquifer, which should prevent the movement of pathogens into the well, well hydraulics was not considered to be a significant factor in this determination. Hence, well hydraulics was not evaluated for this system’s ground water supply.
