On prison population, we can’t have it both ways We can’t seem to make up our minds when it comes to how to handle crime and punishment in America.

On one hand, reducing the prison population in America seems to be a goal for many voters.

The United States has 5 percent of the world’s population and 20 percent of its prison population, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. From 1978 to 2014, the U.S. prison population more than quadrupled.

A poll commissioned a year ago by the American Civil Liberties Union found that almost 70 percent of likely voters agreed it was important to reduce the number of people behind bars. That included majorities of Democrats (81 percent), independents (71 percent) and Republicans (54 percent).

But let someone get arrested for anything besides marijuana possession, and you’ll find people on social media calling for harsh justice.

Lock them up and throw away the key, or worse.

Or if someone gets probation or a sentence they consider too short, people will slam the judge for coddling criminals.

But we can’t have it both ways. If people really want to lower the prison population in Illinois and the rest of America, they will have to change their attitudes about how long people should be sentenced to spend behind bars.

We’re not just talking about drug crimes, either, although you could start there. But in Illinois, there are almost 49,000 people in state prisons. Of those, about 21 percent are in for drug crimes, according to the Illinois State Commission on Criminal Justice and Sentencing Reform. The largest group of state inmates are people who have committed violent crimes (45 percent). Prisoners are overwhelmingly male (94 percent).

It’s clear that to make a dent in the prison population, we have to release black men, possibly including those who have committed violent crimes. We also have to sentence fewer black men to long prison terms.

But anytime that happens – as it did when Gov. Pat Quinn instituted the “MGT Push” program that led to about 1,700 inmates being released early from state prisons – people flip.

The “push” program, which awarded inmates credit for good behavior before they’d displayed any good behavior, was later called a danger to the public.

Some people definitely need to be behind bars, and a select few never should walk free again. Prison and jail time are important for protecting society, even protecting the offenders themselves.

But if we’re not willing to let some people out, and give them a chance to do something productive once they are free, then any talk about reducing the prison population is nothing more than lip service.

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Charles Ridulph watched misty-eyed Thursday as 10-year-old Lily Potts gushed about summer camp and the horses she’s ridden, arrows she’s shot and churros she’s eaten since arriving Sunday.

It’s been a week of firsts for Lily and her 6-year-old brother, Dexter Yamaoka. Before Sunday, the two never had been to camp – and, so far, the Kingston retreat Walcamp has made for the “best summer ever.”

Lily and Dexter are the first children to receive camp trips from the Maria Ridulph Memorial Fund, established in 2015 in memory of the 7-year-old Sycamore girl who was kidnapped and killed in 1957. Maria’s older brother, Charles Ridulph, had hoped to put the case’s details behind him years ago, and on Sunday, Ridulph was able to do something charitable and lighthearted in her name – something she would have loved, he said.

“It gives the kids an opportunity to do something that Maria never had the chance to do,” Charles Ridulph said. “Maria would have just loved the whole thing.”

Lily and Dexter have spent the week swimming and horseback riding at Walcamp, with its teepees, wooded footpaths and treehouses to fuel a sense of adventure.

“This would be the best summer because this is the first time I went kayaking, the first time I did a bow and arrow, the first time I ate a churro here, and the first time I ever rode a horse – and it’s so fun,” Potts said, fresh off a kayak and still wearing a life jacket with the words, “under 90 lbs” written in black marker.

Maria Ridulph was a student at West Elementary, where Lily and Dexter both go to school. The fund includes proceeds from Charles Lachman’s book, “Footsteps in the Snow,” which chronicled Maria’s disappearance and the subsequent investigation, her brother, Charles Ridulph said.

He chose to send the brother and sister to Walcamp for its added focus on faith and Christianity – something Lily has begun to explore on

her own, said her mother, Katy Yamaoka.

“It’s interesting. She’s very much this last year been interested in going to church,” Katy Yamaoka said.

“We are Lutheran, and she just has a really good interest in what it means to be a Christian, so I think going to this camp kind of gave her the opportunity to be with more like-minded people and learn about our faith.”

The donation came at the perfect time for the family, she said. While

DeKalb man pleads not guilty to murdering 19-year-old girlfriend

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of murdering his 19-year-old girlfriend and hiding her body in a closet.

A DeKalb County courtroom was packed Friday with friends and family of victim Moorea Des Roches, as the woman’s onetime boyfriend and father of her child, Michael Kulpin, was read the charges against him.

Kulpin, 20, of the 900 block of Kimberly Drive, DeKalb, faces a minimum of 20 years or a maximum 100 years in prison if convicted of first-degree murder. He also is charged with aggravated domestic battery and unlawful concealment of a homicidal death.

Should Kulpin be convicted of both murder and concealment of a homicidal death, he would have to serve sentences for each charge separately, DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery said.

Kulpin is represented by public defender Tom McCulloch, who said it is too early to know when the case could go to trial.

“We are anxiously looking forward to the state giving us the discovery and the documentation that they have, and we’ll evaluate everything before we decide where this is going,” McCulloch said.

Kulpin’s cousin, Robin Hansen, was among the crowd gathered in court Friday. She said an “unfathomably horrible childhood” might explain, but not excuse, her cousin’s alleged actions June 4.

“I guess what I’m saying is what he did, you kind of expect that to happen. The anger – it kind of created a perfect storm, and it all came together, all the stuff in his life,” Hansen said. “He grew up with horrible violence and horrible stuff that you can’t even fathom ... . In a way, I’m not saying that’s an excuse for what he did, but it sure was a factor and has played in it.”

Police have said Kulpin beat and repeatedly stabbed Des Roches inside their apartment during an argument June 4. He then hid her body in a bedroom closet and covered her with blankets and pillows, police said.

Tears ran down the face of Des Roches’ childhood friend, Madison Mientes, after hearing Kulpin’s plea and a summary of what allegedly took place the night of Des Roches’ death.

“I think that’s awful to put her family through this,” Mientes said.

“Her parents couldn’t even come today because her mom was so sick at the thought of having to be here.”

Des Roches is from Campton Hills, near St. Charles, and she and Kulpin have a child together.

Mientes remembered Des Roches as a brave, loving teenager, with whom she played with at recess years earlier and ran alongside on their soccer team.

“She was not afraid of anything.

We were always getting into trouble.

Everything was fun with her. She was so carefree and so much fun to be around,” Mientes said. “She was a great person. There is not a person that just loved everything as much as she did. She was always telling us how much she loved us.”

There I was, living in my own home in Creston, IL and managing just fine. I had good friends, my loving family and a home I enjoyed. Then it happened. One day you wake up and think to yourself, “Hey. I’m not as young as I used to be.” It kind of sneaks up on you and before your Charlotte Be know it your start considering what the options might be as you face those big retirement decisions. My children live out of state and I knew that rg I wanted to stay near my friends, church and my community activities so my search began. I already had had some dear friends living at Oak Crest and after visiting decided that the on-site availability of health care, location and surroundings were the perfect fit for me. Now, I was faced with the dilemma of making the decision to actually move. So, I called up Oak Creast with some pretty specific requests. I wanted an apartment on the third floor, looking north, near my cousin. Feeling pretty confident that my my requests would not be easily filled, I sat back and relaxed. Imagine my surprise when mere weeks later I received a call telling me that my very wish was granted. I moved in and have to tell you I couldn’t be happier. I enjoy my apartment; I love my neighbors and I can participate in any number of events and activities throughout the day. As my Oak Crest neighbors and I say, “Be careful what you wish for at Oak Crest, because they just might come true.”

Indian Creek retirement dinner for superintendent may have broken state law

The Daily Chronicle learned of the meeting from a phony news release that said the retirement dinner was open to the public and encouraged community members to bring questions.

Boehne initially said the school district would pay for the food at the dinner, but later said no tax dollars would be used. He said the dinner would be sponsored by Resource Bank. He declined to say what prompted the change.

Resource Bank handles some of the district’s financial accounts.

Boehne said the board wasn’t meeting to discuss public business.

“It’s a retirement dinner – that’s all I’m going to say,” Boehne said.

Rockwood has served as the district’s superintendent for the past decade. The district serves 750 students in DeKalb County, Lee County and a small part of LaSalle County.

Rockwood announced her retirement in May in a newsletter. In a letter to the community, she noted she has helped the district add more than $10 million to its reserve fund. She also not-

ed other awards and accolades the district has earned under her leadership.

Rockwood is leaving to take an assistant professor job at Texas A&M University, according to the letter.

The Indian Creek school board met Monday to hire Rockwood’s successor.

However, there was some confusion about whom the district hired.

Board member James Hicks told the Daily Chronicle on Thursday that the district hired Michael Lindy to replace Rockwood as superintendent. Hicks said the board interviewed at least four candidates for the job. He said Lindy was the best qualified.

Boehne said Friday that the board voted 7-0 Monday to offer the position to Chad Willis, superintendent of Abingdon-Avon District 276. Willis didn’t respond to messages from the Daily Chronicle. Boehne said he didn’t know why Hicks would say that Lindy was hired.

Boehne said Willis could start at the district July 1, if he accepts the position. He said compensation hadn’t been determined and would be part of negotiations with Willis. Boehne said the contract details would be released once it was signed.

Rockwood didn’t return several messages left at the district’s office.

Board Vice President Joshua Merchant couldn’t be reached for comment. An attorney from the Chicago-based law firm that represents the district, Scariano, Himes and Petrarca, also couldn’t be reached for comment.

Early in her career she was the director of school food service at St. Mary’s, KS, and a consultant in the field of dietetics.

Marsha was an active member of the Crossview EFCA Church in DeKalb. She loved gardening, visiting lighthouses, camping and spending time with family.

Survivors include her husband, David; two children, Sarah and Jeremiah Finley, both of Sycamore; her mother, Eula Kittle of Liberal, KS; three sisters, Brenda (Kurt)

Deaton, of Liberal, KS, Christa (Doug) Moyer, of Olton, TX, and Tera (Gerald) Holland, of Henrietta, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Fred; and one brother, Robert Kittle.

Her visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday, June 27, at the Crossview EFCA Church, 150 Bethany Rd., DeKalb, IL. A service will begin at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Marty Voltz officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

Indian Creek Community School District 425 hosted a retirement dinner Friday for outgoing Superintendent Pamela Rockwood at Indian Oaks Country Club, 603 Preserve Road, Shabbona. The administration and the school board were invited to the dinner, Board President Vaughn Boehne said. No notice of the meeting was posted on the district’s website.

The Illinois Open Meetings Act defines a meeting as “any gathering ... of a majority of a quorum of the members of a public body held for the purpose of discussing public business.”

Don Craven, whose law firm serves as general counsel to the Illinois Press Association, said discussion of the superintendent’s retirement – the stated purpose of the dinner – would constitute public business.

“This is why school boards, or any public body, can’t go to dinner together.

It’s all covered in the Open Meetings Act training that members of public bodies are supposed to take,” Craven said.

“The training makes clear that even a social gathering can become a meeting depending on the nature of the conversation being held. Not to rain on her retirement, but you can’t do a meeting

Local lawmakers to keep eye on proposed bill to ban some gun permits

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Illinois was the last state in the nation to adopt a concealed carry law, but it could be one of the first to pass legislation aimed at keeping people on the terror watch list from getting gun permits.

“While the federal government plays a larger role in this complicated issue, I believe we have a responsibility to do our part,” said state House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs.

He is a co-sponsor of House Bill 6588, introduced this week.

The Illinois lawmakers’ move comes on the heels of the Orlando massacre where 49 people were killed. The gunman legally bought assault-style weapons in the days leading up to the attack.

He also had been investigated by the FBI concerning ties to Islamic extremist terror groups.

The bill would have the state police notify the FBI if a person here applies for a Firearm Owner’s Identification

“Anytime we’re talking about Second Amendment rights ... there’s a lot of complexities.

There’s a potential that a bill like this could pass, but I wouldn’t describe the process as easy.”

State Rep., R-Dixon card. Further, it would allow the state police to reject the application. Or, in the case when a person already has an Illinois FOID card and ends up on the federal terror watch list, the state police could revoke it, according to the proposed legislation.

The bill would allow state law enforcement to deny or revoke a FOID card if the person makes threats that state law deems terror-related.

The bipartisan bill also comes after a dramatic week on Capitol Hill. The U.S.

Senate failed Monday to pass four bills aimed at blocking some gun sales. Then, on Wednesday, Democrats in the House staged a daylong sit-in and demanded that similar legislation be called for a vote in that chamber.

In Illinois, HB 6588 is so new that several elected officials, including state Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, have yet to look at it closely. Nevertheless, there appears to be a preliminary general consensus. But, lawmakers expressed concern about how things would work.

“I’m certainly interested in trying to keep weapons out the hands of terrorists,” Demmer said. “I am interested to look at how the bill determines and what the process might be for people who feel they might be wrongly on a list.”

State Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, could not be immediately reached for comment on the bill.

Although the bill is a ways away from moving on to the Senate – if it ever does – state Sen. Dave Syverson, R-Rockford, said it sounds more like “feel good

“Most people believe that if someone legitimately is a person that is a threat, they should not be allowed to have a weapon. The problem is the watch list system is so flawed,” Syverson said.

He said the idea of a ban sounds good but would not be effective with Illinois having one while other states – especially nearby ones – would not. “[The legislation] sounds good,” he said. “But it doesn’t really address the problems.”

With other Republican legislators having introduced bills to relax some of the rules in the conceal carry law, including allowing concealed weapons in public parks, the fight for HB 6588 could get tough.

NIU alum takes top job at DeKalb Co. Health Department Lisa Gonzalez

Newly appointed director of DeKalb County Public Health Department director.

In that role, she was in charge of a staff of 60 and oversaw a number of maternal and child health programs, according to a DeKalb County Health Department news release announcing her hire.

She also was head of personal health services for the Boone County Health Department.

DeKALB – A Northern Illinois University alum whose work in public health spans 15 years has been tapped to take over as head of the DeKalb County Public Health Department.

Lisa Gonzalez started her career as a health educator in the DeKalb County Health Department after graduating from NIU with a bachelor’s degree in community health promotion.

She went on to also get a master of public health degree from the university.

“The importance of public health oftentimes goes unnoticed – because if we are doing our job well, you may not hear about the valuable work being done,” Gonzalez said in the news release. “Public Health works diligently to protect and improve the health of families and communities and focuses on the health of the entire population, over the entire lifespan.”

Gonzalez has been working alongside outgoing director Jane Lux for several weeks. But she officially takes on the role July 1. Lux leaves the department after working there for 35 years.

“In the short time we have spent together, I have observed her passion and leadership expertise,” Lux said.

Since leaving the DeKalb area, Gonzalez has worked in Winnebago County as a family health services

State budget impasse could delay and distributes to local governments. several DeKalb Co. road projects Schwartz said DeKalb County is DeKALB – The DeKalb County Highway Department said Friday that several road project startups could be held up, and the completion of the Coltonville Road bridge project delayed, if the state doesn’t have a budget in place by July 1.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced this week that construction contracts statewide which include IDOT funding could be affected without a fiscal 2017 budget in place. The issue also includes some federally funded projects. The current fiscal year ends June 30.

That means that in DeKalb County, the Shabbona Road resurfacing project in Shabbona, the Melms Road bridge work in Genoa and construction on Plank Road from Route 23 to Lindgren Road could not get started as planned, DeKalb County Engineer Nathan Schwartz said.

Money for these and other county road projects is paid for in part from the Motor Fuel Tax the state collects

expected to receive its June payment, but it is uncertain that funds would be received beyond that time.

Work was to begin the week of July 4 on the $109,185 Shabbona project. In March, the county board approved the work, which includes repaving nearly a mile of roadway between Shabbona Road and East Street.

No start date had been determined for the Melms Road bridge work, but the county estimated that the $641,336 project would be completed by early December, according to county data.

The Plank Road repaving was scheduled to start July 5. The $276,563 project was expected to be done by July 29.

Work on the Coltonville Road bridge project could be hampered by a second consecutive budget impasse.

But Schwartz said the workers on that project are looking to open the road ahead of an IDOT funding shutdown.

Wagenknecht released Friday on recognizance bond, barred from internet access

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Police said a DeKalb man facing child pornography charges had the files pulled up on his home computer when officers arrived with a search warrant.

An undercover investigation led police to an IP address with videos of girls younger than 13 years old lewdly posed and performing sexual acts, police said.

The files were traced to the home of Erich J. Wagenknecht, 42, of the 100

If Wagenknecht is convicted of unlawful possession of child pornography, he could be sentenced to three to seven years in prison. Police still are investigating whether the man was involved in distributing the files, DeKalb police Sgt. Steve Lekkas said.

DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery released Wagenknecht on a recognizance bond Friday and barred him from accessing the internet.

Police had confiscated any computers, tablets or phones from the home that

might contain child pornography, Lekkas said.

During a police interview, Wagenknecht admitted to looking at pornographic images and videos of children between ages 12 and 14 on a regular basis, court records show.

Wagenknecht has two minor children living at his DeKalb home, Lekkas said.

DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch has been appointed to represent Wagenknecht, who is set to return to court Aug. 12.

Lucas abandons Chicago museum plan

CHICAGO – “Star Wars” creator George Lucas announced Friday that he has abandoned plans to build his art museum in Chicago, blaming delays over a lawsuit from a parks group opposed to development along the city’s prized lakefront.

The filmmaker said in a statement he would take his Lucas Museum of Narrative Art to his home state of California, but he did not name a specific location. He blamed Chicago’s Friends of the Parks group for suing to stop construction on what is currently a parking lot for the NFL stadium Soldier Field.

“No one benefits from continuing their seemingly unending litigation to protect a parking lot,” Lucas said.

Friends of the Parks said it was unfortunate that Lucas wouldn’t consider an alternate Chicago site away from the lake.

CHICAGO – United Airlines has tentatively negotiated a new contract for its 25,000 flight attendants, who will hold a ratification vote.

If approved, the agreement between United and the Association of Flight Attendants would let the airline mix cabin crews from United and Continental Airlines, which merged in 2010.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

United Continental Holdings Inc. and the union said Friday that negotiators still were working to finish contract language.

The airline industry is heavily unionized. About 80 percent of United’s employees are represented by unions, according to the company’s latest annual report.

Shares of United Continental were down $2.56, or 5.7 percent, to $42.61 in midday trading. Airline stocks fell over uncertainty about how they will be

Windfall from license plate late fees exceeds $5M

BELLEVILLE – The state of Illinois now has collected an extra $5 million in license plate renewal late fees after lawmakers did not take final action to get tardy motorists some relief during the spring session.

The Illinois Secretary of State’s decision not to mail reminders about renewals – a cost-saving measure during the political standoff over the state budget – is earning the state more than twice the amount in $20 late fees this year compared with the same time last year.

The full Senate did not act on a House bill giving motorists a 30-day grace period during which police couldn’t issue tickets for having expired stickers.

That has led to Illinois collecting $9.5 million on about 476,550 late fees so far in 2016 compared with $4.3 million on about 214,500 late fees during the same time in 2015, Illinois Secretary of State spokesman Dave Druker told the Belleville News-Democrat.

Duckworth prevails in workplace lawsuit

JONESBORO – A settlement in the workplace retaliation lawsuit against U.S. Senate candidate Tammy Duckworth has concluded with an agreement that no law was violated.

The settlement removes what has been a distraction for the Democratic congresswoman who is challenging Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk in one of November’s most competitive Senate races.

The Illinois Attorney General’s Office announced the agreement Friday after a hearing in Union County. The office represented Duckworth in the case.

CHICAGO – The money laundering trial of the widow of a Fox Lake police officer who tried to make his suicide appear as if he was gunned down in the line of duty has been delayed until November.

Melodie Gliniewicz was indicted months after Fox Lake Police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz’s September death on charges that the two had siphoned money from a youth program. She’s pleaded not guilty.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office said the trial that was to begin Monday is now set for Nov. 14.

Entries missing in Clinton’s State Department calendar

WASHINGTON – An Associated Press review of the official calendar Hillary Clinton kept as secretary of state identified at least 75 meetings with longtime political donors, loyalists, Clinton Foundation contributors and corporate and other outside interests that were not recorded or were listed without the names of those she met.

The missing entries raise new questions about how Clinton and her inner circle handled government records documenting her State Department tenure – in this case, why the official chronology of her four-year term does not closely mirror other more detailed records of her daily meetings.

At a time when Clinton’s private email system is under scrutiny by an FBI criminal investigation, the calendar omissions reinforce concerns that she sought to eliminate the “risk of the personal being accessible” – as she wrote in an email exchange that she failed to turn over to the Obama administration but was subsequently uncovered in a top aide’s inbox.

The AP found the calendar omissions by comparing the 1,500-page historical record of Clinton’s daily activities as secretary of state with separate planning schedules often supplied to Clinton by aides in advance of each day’s events.

The AP obtained the planning schedules as part of its federal lawsuit against the State Department. At least 114 outsiders who met with Clinton were not listed in her calendar, the AP’s review found.

No known federal laws were violated and some omissions could be blamed on Clinton’s highly fluid schedule, which sometimes forced cancellations at the last minute. But only seven meetings found in Clinton’s planning schedules were replaced by substitute events listed on her calendar.

More than 60 other events listed in Clinton’s planners were omitted entirely in her calendar, tersely noted or described only as “private meetings” – all without naming those who met with her.

Clinton campaign spokesman Nick Merrill said Thursday night that the multiple discrepancies between her State Department calendar and her planning schedules “simply reflect a more detailed version in one version as compared to another, all maintained by her staff.”

Merrill said that Clinton “has always made an effort to be transparent since entering public life, whether it be the release of over 30 years of tax returns, years of financial disclosure forms, or asking that 55,000 pages of work emails from her time as secretary of state be turned over to the public.

Clinton’s State Department calendar omitted the identities of a dozen top Wall Street and business leaders who met with her during a private breakfast at the New York Stock Exchange in September 2009, minutes before she appeared in public at the exchange to ring the market’s ceremonial opening bell.

State Department planning schedules from the same day listed the names of all Clinton’s breakfast guests – most

of whose firms had lobbied the government and donated to her family’s global charity, the Clinton Foundation. The event was closed to the press and merited only a brief mention in her calendar, which omitted all the names – among them Blackstone Group Chairman Steven Schwarzman, PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi and thenNew York Bank of Mellon CEO Robert Kelly.

The missing or heavily edited entries in Clinton’s calendar also omitted private dinners with political donors, policy sessions with groups of corporate leaders and “drop-bys” with old Clinton campaign hands. Among those whose names were omitted from her calendar were longtime adviser Sidney Blumenthal, lobbyist and former Clinton White House chief of staff Thomas “Mack” McLarty and Clinton campaign bundler Haim Saban.

The AP first sought Clinton’s calendar and schedules from the State Department in August 2013, but the agency would not acknowledge even that it had the material. After nearly two years of delay, the AP sued the State Department in March 2015. The department agreed in a court filing in August to turn over Clinton’s calendar, and provided the documents in November.

LONDON – Britain has jumped. Now it is wildly searching for the parachute.

The U.K.’s unprecedented decision to leave the European Union sent shockwaves through the country and around the world Friday, rocking financial markets, toppling Prime Minister David Cameron and even threatening the ties that bind the United Kingdom.

Britons absorbed the overwhelming realization that their anti-establishment vote has pushed the British economy into treacherous and uncertain territory and sparked a profound crisis for a bloc founded to unify Europe after the devastation of World War II. “Leave” campaigners hailed the result as a victory for British democracy against the bureaucratic behemoth of the EU. Conservative former London Mayor Boris Johnson said “the British people have spoken up for democracy in Britain and across Europe,” while Nigel Farage, leader of the hard-right U.K. Independence Party, said “the dawn is breaking on an independent United Kingdom.”

The decision launches a yearslong process to renegotiate trade, business and political links between the U.K. and what will become a 27-nation bloc, an unprecedented divorce that could take a decade or more to complete.

Ryan proposes simpler tax code

WASHINGTON – House Republicans led by Speaker Paul Ryan unveiled a plan for a simpler tax code, the sixth and last installment of a GOP agenda designed to be a policy counterpoint to the personality-driven campaign of Donald Trump.

Ryan and other Republicans announced the plan at a news conference Friday morn- Paul Ryan ing. The proposal would lower tax rates for both families and businesses, although it falls short of the 25 percent top rate for individuals that Ryan promised not long ago.

Instead, the tax reform plan proposes a 33 percent top tax bracket instead of the current top rate of 39.6 percent restored by President Barack Obama in a 2013 victory over Republicans in the wake of his re-election.

The Ryan plan also lacks the detail required to measure whether it maintains the current distribution of the tax burden by income range.

The plan won’t face a vote this year but, like other elements of Ryan’s agenda, provides a template for potential action next year.

“For families and individuals, the new tax system will simplify and lower tax rates. It also will provide for reduced but progressive tax rates on capital gains, dividends and interest income,’ the proposal reads. “The approach reflected in this blueprint will be simple enough to fit on a postcard for most Americans.”

Individual filers would retain tax breaks for mortgage interest, charitable giving and retirement savings in a decision that reflects the sweeping popularity of such measures.

The measure also promises business and international tax reforms to make U.S. companies more competitive with overseas companies, including lowering the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent. In exchange, businesses would lose a host of write-offs.

Tax reform is a longtime promise of Republicans, and the code has gotten far more complex in the three decades since the landmark 1986 tax overhaul.

But changing the code pits powerful

interests against one another and exposes ideological rifts among Republicans and between Republicans and Democrats.

“We want to make it simpler, flatter, fairer. Bring the number of tax brackets down from seven to three.

Lower rates for everybody,” Ryan said. “Bring the top rate down to 33 percent. Close those special-interest loopholes. Consolidate those deductions and credits.”

The measure assumes the proposal would generate economic growth that would, in turn, boost revenues.

Such “dynamic” effects permit policymakers to promise even lower tax rates that would not add to the budget deficit.

Friday’s event clearly pleased Ryan who, along with House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, fielded wonkish questions from reporters who specialize in tax issues.

There was, for the first time in memory, no questions about Trump, whose candidacy clearly vexes Capitol Hill Republicans and has overshadowed Ryan’s attempts to win attention for his six-piece “Better Way” agenda.

Cameron, who had led the campaign to keep Britain in the EU, said he would resign by October and left it to his successor to decide when to invoke Article 50, which triggers a departure from European Union.

“I will do everything I can as prime minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months,” a somber Cameron said outside 10 Downing St. “But I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers the country to its next destination.”

He also said he had spoken to Queen Elizabeth II “to advise her of the steps that I am taking.”

In a referendum marked by notably high turnout – 72 percent of the more than 46 million registered voters – “leave” won with 52 percent of the votes.

Stock markets plummeted around the world, with key indexes dropping more than 12 percent in Germany and about 8 percent in Japan and Britain.

Markets calmed and later recovered some of their losses after Bank of England Governor Mark Carney promised to take “all the necessary steps to prepare for today’s events.”

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 611 points, or 3.4 percent, its biggest fall since August.

BRIEF DOJ’s refusal to turn over code complicates child porn cases

SEATTLE – The Justice Department’s refusal to disclose information about a software weakness it exploited during a major child pornography investigation last year is complicating some of its prosecutions arising from the bust.

During the investigation, the FBI allowed a secret child porn website on the largely anonymous Tor network to run for two weeks while it tried to identify users by hacking into their computers. The cases highlight how courts have struggled to square technological advances with existing legal rules.

A federal judge in Washington state last month threw out the government’s evidence against one of the defendants, saying that unless the FBI detailed the vulnerability it exploited, the man couldn’t mount an effective defense.

In another case, a Virginia judge rejected a similar request in an opinion unsealed Thursday, saying even if the defendant had demonstrated a need for the full source code, that need would be outweighed by the government’s interest in keeping it secret to protect investigative techniques.

BEIRUT – Islamic State militants abducted about 900 Kurdish civilians in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo over the past three weeks, forcing the captives to build fortifications for the extremists in retaliation for a Kurdish-led assault on a nearby IS stronghold, activists said Friday.

Reports also emerged Friday that at least 26 of those abducted have been killed for refusing to follow IS orders.

The abductions come amid fierce fighting for control of Manbij – a key IS stronghold in this Syrian province – where the extremists are being routed from the town center by the predominantly Kurdish and U.S.-backed Syria Democratic Forces.

Some of the abducted Kurds have been pressganged into digging trenches and shelters for the IS, according to Kurdish media activist Rezan Hiddo, while others have been forced to wear IS uniforms and ordered to fight at the fronts.

On Friday, the mostly Kurdish SDF battled IS militants inside Manbij after having encircling the stronghold in a weeks-long offensive that has been backed by U.S.-coalition air strikes.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group reported that coalition jets struck targets around the town. The SDF has lost 89 fighters since launching its campaign for Manbij on May 31, according to the Observatory. Also, 463 IS militants have been killed.

The push by the SDF into Manbij has been slow as the U.S.-backed fighters first focused on capturing dozens of villages and farms near the town in the past weeks.

The town lies along the only IS supply line between the Syrian-Turkish border to the north and the IS extremist group’s self-styled capital of Raqqa, which lies to the southeast, in the ISheld neighboring province of Raqqa.

If Manbij is captured, it will be the biggest strategic defeat for IS in Syria since July 2015, when the extremist group lost the border town of Tal Abyad.

The U.S. has embedded 300 special forces operators with the SDF. The White House said they are advisers.

French special forces operators are also embedded with the group.

SDF spokesman Sherfan Darwish told The Associated Press that the IS militants began abducting Kurdish civilians in retaliation the offensive on Manbij.

“Whenever Daesh is defeated, they retaliate against civilians,” Darwish said, using an Arabic acronym for IS, adding that there are whole families among those taken.

The abductions have been taking place mostly in areas under IS control, from the western Manbij countryside to the towns of al-Bab and al-Rai, according to Hiddo. He said the ongoing campaign has prompted families to flee the towns in fear.

The Observatory and Darwish said some of those taken captive have been forced to dig trenches in IS-held areas while others are imprisoned in ISrun detention centers. Darwish said all captured males above the age of 12 were sent against their will to the front lines to help fortify IS positions.

The militants have killed 26 of the captives for resisting detention or refusing orders, according to Hiddo. His report could not be independently confirmed.

Thumbs-up to local crossing guard retiring after 49 years Thumbs-up: To longtime Sycamore school crossing guard Alice Bennett.

Bennett recently retired after 49 years of helping students get to school safely.

Parents could count on the sight of “Miss Alice” herding groups of children from Locust Street to Southeast Elementary School. Bennett’s five decades of dedication have made Sycamore a better place to live.

Thumbs-down: To a DeKalb County man who is flying a Nazi SS flag on a pole outside his house along Route 23, north of McGirr Road between Waterman and DeKalb. Mike O’Connor told Daily Chronicle Editor Eric Olson this week that the flag was “a shock thing. We are not ISIS, I’m not a white supremacist. It’s just a shock thing.” Like all property owners, O’Connor can raise up whatever flag he chooses. His choice of a symbol for Adolf Hitler’s paramilitary group is, indeed, shocking. His choice shows shockingly bad taste. DeKalb County soldiers died in World War II. Thumbs-down: To more car burglaries, this time in DeKalb. After the recent string of vehicle burglaries in Sycamore, this is frustrating. This should be a strong reminder to owners to lock their doors. Burglaries such as these are often crimes of opportunity. Don’t give anyone the opportunity to steal from your car.

As DeKalb police reminded us this week, even if you are going to be away only for a few minutes, locking up will help guard against being burglarized.

Thumbs-up: To local swim star Daniel Hein. Hein will compete in the 100-meter backstroke at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Monday in Omaha, Nebraska, for a chance to make team headed to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. Hein qualified for the Olympic trials after hitting the mark in 56.79 seconds for a first-place finish at the 2015 YMCA Long Course National Championships last August. We’ll certainly be rooting for him.

Vacation is no time to let down your guard Our hearts go out to the Nebraska family who suffered the unspeakable horror of seeing their toddler snatched away by an alligator while they were visiting a Disney World resort last week.

Although the man-made lake had “no swimming” signs posted, the boy was playing in about a foot of water in a beach area when he was grabbed by the reptile, 4 to 7 feet in length.

The boy’s body was discovered nearby about 16 hours after he was taken.

It was a bad week for the Orlando area, first with the murder of “The Voice” star Christina Grimmie by a deranged fan, then the terrorist who killed 49 at a gay nightclub before he was killed by police.

It was probably a statistical fluke that Orlando was the scene of three separate tragedies in such a short time, given the millions of people who visit the area in a year’s time.

Stalkers and terrorists aside, however, vacation time is no time to let down your guard when it comes to keeping your family safe.

Yellowstone National Park is a

good example of a place where tourists can get into trouble if they don’t respect the natural order of things, whether it’s boiling acidic geyser fields, bison, moose or grizzly bears.

June is National Safety Month, but July is the most dangerous month when it comes to preventable deaths, according to the National Safety Council.

Deaths from incidents such as car crashes, drownings and extreme temperatures spike in July, 11 percent higher than the national average.

“Sun, sand and vacation selfies mark July as the peak of summer,” said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “Making safe choices can ensure July is the best month of the year, not the most deadly,” she said.

Some common sense advice from the NSC: • Avoid speeding, using cellphones and driving under the influence. In 2011, 3,417 people were killed in car crashes in July.

Crashes involving speeding and alcohol are highest in the summer, and cellphone use increases crash risk fourfold, even when using a

hands-free device.

• Place children in age-appropriate car seats. If you are flying, buy a ticket for children ages 2 and younger and place them in an FAA-approved child seat. Do not hold young children on your lap during a flight.

• Learn about your vehicle’s safety systems and how to use them. MyCarDoesWhat can help drivers understand features such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning systems and backup cameras.

• Do not operate a boat while drinking or without a boater’s license • Make sure children use flotation devices and everyone in your group knows how to swim. In 2011, 759 individuals drowned in July.

• Stay hydrated and avoid being outside for long periods in the extreme heat. In 2011, 270 people were killed in July because of extreme temperatures.

• In 2013, 44 kids died from heatstroke because they were left in hot cars. Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle.

America has more silly warnings mainly because, unlike the rest of the world, we don’t have the “loser pays” rule in courts. That rule means that whoever wins a court battle is compensated by the loser. It creates an incentive not to bring frivolous cases.

In the U.S., the incentive is to try even dubious legal arguments and hope you’ll hit the jackpot. Or maybe your enemy will pay you to avoid the bigger cost of hiring lawyers to continue the fight.

More lawsuits mean more fright-

ened corporate lawyers smearing labels on everything, just in case “lack of warning” is an issue in a lawsuit.

That’s probably why a toy “Star Wars” lightsaber comes with the label, “Not to Be Used as a Battle Device.”

Why would they bother to say that? Did someone sue, claiming they thought a lightsaber would do what it does in “Star Wars” movies? I don’t know.

The company never responded to our questions.

Some dumb labels are brought to us by dumb politicians. California requires warnings that something may be “toxic” or cause cancer on everything from foods to theme parks: “Disneyland Resort contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.” Gee, thanks, California, but it probably would be better to warn kids about alligators over in Florida.

Dorigo Jones offers a prize to whoever submits the wackiest label. The lightsaber label won this year, earning Susannah Peat of Carmel, Indiana, $1,000. You can submit your choices to try to win next year’s prize.

Please do. It’s important to make fun of lawyer-driven stupidity that distracts us from more important risks.

I suppose I shouldn’t really blame companies. They’ve been sued successfully so many times for not having labels that they feel they must try to protect themselves. Injuries aren’t the real danger here. Lawyers and politicians are.

When companies get sued, they end up charging higher prices to cover the cost of the lawyers. So those warning labels not only distract us but also are part of a process that makes us all poorer.

Those warning labels give us the impression that the law has assessed every possible risk – if something were seriously dangerous, government wouldn’t allow it.

Lawyers’ and legislators’ insistence that most every action be bound by written rules makes many of us forget to use own own brains.

Amazing artificial intelligence is on its way

We have been hearing predictions for decades of a takeover of the world by artificial intelligence. In 1957, Herbert A. Simon predicted that within 10 years a digital computer would be the world’s chess champion. That didn’t happen until 1996. And despite Marvin Minsky’s 1970 prediction that “in from three to eight years we will have a machine with the general intelligence of an average human being,” we still consider that a feat of science fiction.

The pioneers of artificial intelligence surely were off on the timing, but they weren’t wrong; AI is coming. It is going to be in our TV sets and driving our cars; it will be our friend and personal assistant; it will take the role of our doctor. There have been more advances in AI over the past three years than there were in the previous three decades.

The AI of the past used brute-force computing to analyze data and present them in a way that seemed human. The programmer supplied the intelligence in the form of decision trees and algorithms. Imagine that you were trying to build a machine that could play tic-tac-

toe. You would give it specific rules on what move to make, and it would follow them. That is essentially how IBM’s Big Blue computer beat chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov in 1997, by using a supercomputer to calculate every possible move faster than he could.

Today’s AI uses machine learning in which you give it examples of previous games and let it learn from those examples. The computer is taught what to learn and how to learn and makes its own decisions. What’s more, the new AIs are modeling the human mind itself, using techniques similar to our learning processes. Before, it could take millions of lines of computer code to perform tasks such as handwriting recognition. Now it can be done in hundreds of lines. What is required is a large number of examples so the computer can teach itself.

The new programming techniques use neural networks – which are modeled on the human brain, in which information is processed in layers and the connections between these layers are strengthened based on what is learned. This is called deep learning because of the increasing numbers of layers of information that are processed by increasingly faster comput-

ers. These are enabling computers to recognize images, voice and text – and to do human-like things.

Google searches used to use a technique called PageRank to come up with their results. Using rigid proprietary algorithms, they analyzed the text and links on Web pages to determine what was most relevant and important.

Google is replacing this technique in searches and most of its other products with algorithms based on deep learning, the same technologies it used to defeat a human player at the game Go. AI has applications in every area in which data are processed and decisions required. Wired founding editor Kevin Kelly likened AI to electricity: a cheap, reliable, industrial-grade digital smartness running behind everything. He said it “will enliven inert objects, much as electricity did more than a century ago. Everything that we formerly electrified we will now ‘cognitize.’ ” AI soon will be everywhere.

Businesses are infusing AI into their products and helping them analyze the vast amounts of data they are gathering. Google, Amazon and Apple are working on voice assistants for our homes that manage our lights, order our food and schedule our meetings.

Robotic assistants such as Rosie from “The Jetsons” and R2-D2 of “Star Wars” are about a decade away.

Do we need to be worried about the runaway “artificial general intelligence” that goes out of control and takes over the world? Yes – but perhaps not for another 15 or 20 years. There are justified fears that rather than being told what to learn and complementing our capabilities, AIs will start learning everything there is to learn and know far more than we do. Although some people, such as futurist Ray Kurzweil, see us using AI to augment our capabilities and evolve together, others, such as Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking, fear that AI will usurp us. We really don’t know where all this will go.

What is certain is that AI is here and making amazing things possible.

When you use a coffeepot, do you need a warning label to tell you: “Do not hold over people”?

Must a bicycle bell be sold with the warning: “Should be installed and serviced by a professional mechanic”? Of course not. Yet that bell also carries the warning: “Failure to heed any of these warnings may result in serious injury or death.”

This is nuts. It’s a BELL. The blizzard of warning labels means we often won’t read ones we should, such as the Clorox label that warns, do not use bleach “with other product ... hazardous gasses may result.” No kidding. Mixing bleach and ammonia creates gasses that can kill people.

But I rarely bother to read warning labels anymore, because manufacturers put them on EVERYTHING. A utility knife bears the warning: “Blades are sharp.”

I know about such dumb labels because Bob Dorigo Jones, author of “Remove Child Before Folding,” asks his readers and radio listeners to send in ridiculous labels for his “Wacky Warning Label” contest.

Hein ready for dream race as he swims at U.S. Olympic trials

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Daniel Hein and his family traveled to Omaha, Nebraska four years ago to watch the Olympic swimming trials.

Now he’s traveling there to swim in them.

After hitting the qualifying time at a national meet last summer, the former DeKalb-Sycamore co-op swim team star will compete in the 100-meter backstroke at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Monday morning at the Centurylink Center in Omaha for a chance to make the the team for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janerio.

“Just going to see that was crazy,” Hein said of watching the 2012 Olympic trials. “Compared to a normal swim meet, it’s just blown up. Insane. I remember watching the finals when Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte were going, they had fire coming out of the side of the pool – these flamethrowers up into the air. I was like, ‘What the heck? This is a swim meet.’

“It’s just crazy. There’s a huge crowd, and it’s unlike any other sporting event I’ve been to. It’s like a professional football game or a professional basketball game.”

Hein, 18, said he was at a swim meet when he watched the 2008 Beijing Olympics on TV as a 10-year-old, seeing Phelps win an Olympic-record eight goal medals. He could theoretically race against his backstroke swimming hero Matt Grevers – the 6-foot-8 Lake Forest native who won the gold medal in the event at the 2012 Olympics – at some point this week.

“I’ve met him before and standing next to him was like, ‘Wow, you’re huge,’ ” Hein said.

It’s been a big past year for Hein, who qualified for the Olympic trials after hitting the qualifying mark in 56.79 seconds for a firstplace finish at the 2015 YMCA Long Course National Championships on Aug. 5, 2015. He also closed out his prep career for DeKalb-Sycamore by winning first place at the IHSA State Championships in the 100-yard

The IOC said it will “decide which accredited laboratory to use after the assessment by WADA, which is the body responsible for the accreditation of anti-doping laboratories.”

However, officials at the Rio lab believe the conformity issue still can be solved in time.

“The lab expects its operations to return to normal in July after a visit from WADA’s technical committee,” the laboratory said in a statement.

That view was shared by Brazil’s anti-doping authority, known as ABCD and run by the sports ministry.

The authority said it was “confident that the institution will take all the necessary procedures” to have the provisional suspension lifted.

It’s not the first time that the Rio

lab has been suspended by WADA. It also was brought to a halt in 2012 after a false positive test result.

The agency’s latest move “prohibits the laboratory from carrying out all anti-doping analyses on urine and blood samples,” WADA said in a statement.

Samples collected from athletes in Brazil during the interim ban will be transported to a lab in another country for testing, it added.

“This will ensure that there are no gaps in the anti-doping sample analysis procedures; and that, the integrity of the samples is fully maintained,” WADA’s incoming director general Olivier Niggli said.

Niggli added that the agency “will work closely with the Rio Laboratory to resolve the identified issue.”

While Hein understands he’s far from a favorite to win in Omaha, it could be a valuable experience swimming on the biggest stage of his life.

“Obviously, the chances of me making the team are slim to none, but it’s going to be great to go out and compete, and I’ll just go out and try and get my best time,” he said.

“It’ll be good to get that experience in and so four years later, I can come back and improve on my time in the trials and maybe try and go for a spot – we’ll see where we’re at in four years.

“I think this is just the beginning of these bigger meets that I’ll be going to.”

The field will consist of about 170 swimmers, with preliminary rounds breaking it down to a semifinal field of 16 and then a final field of eight.

His training schedule has gotten more applicable in the weeks leading up to the trials, because the only Olympic length pool that he had access to was Hopkins Pool, which only recently opened.

He said his workout routine consists of swimming from 6:15 to 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, swimming for nearly two more hours on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and weightlifting for about an hour every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

He said he eats three 1,000-calorie meals – along with at least three, 300to 500-calorie snacks – with all the training he’s been doing.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Only weeks before the Olympic Games open in Rio de Janeiro, the city’s accredited anti-doping laboratory has been stopped from conducting tests.

The World Anti-Doping Agency said Friday it has suspended the lab’s accreditation due to “nonconformity with the International Standard for Laboratories.” It did not give details of the nonconformity.

The suspension is an embarrassment to Brazil and Rio so close to the games, which will open Aug. 5 after months of political turmoil and financial crisis for federal, state and city authorities.

“This is another severe blow,” Mario Andrada, the spokesman of the Rio Games organizing committee, told The Associated Press.

“We might not resolve this lab situation before the games. We might have to choose another lab outside Brazil to do the tests. But this will be under the instruction and guidance of WADA.” If the Rio lab is not reinstated in the next six weeks, other testing centers with WADA accreditation include: UCLA in Los Angeles; Salt Lake City; Bogota, Colombia; Havana; and Mexico City.

In a statement, the International Olympic Committee said the suspension would not “affect either the integrity or the scope of the testing program” at the games.

KV Storm sends 14U, 16U into 2nd day of Storm Dayz with 2 wins

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Now comes the fun part for the Kishwaukee Valley Storm 14U softball team.

After advancing to the semifinals of Storm Dayz last season, the Storm advanced through pool play as the undefeated top seed of their group heading into the bracketed tournament of the 14th edition of the annual gathering at Sycamore Park.

“It’s definitely the fun part, that’s the reward for all the hard work during the week,” said Storm coach Paul Parks, whose team won both games Friday. “It’s a good time for the players to come out and see where they’re at against other girls their age. This group has been together – this is their sixth year together – so a lot of them have played within the Storm organization, so it’s a pretty easy fit to put them all together. You just roll the balls out and they go play.”

They open the double-elimination tournament against Crust Tidal Wave SF (1-1) at 11 a.m. today on Field 9.

The Storm’s 16U team also comes into the second day of the tournament after a pair of wins, beating the McHenry County Heatwave and the Northern Illinois Lightning. They earned the top seed in their pool and will play at 9:30 a.m. today on Field 10 against the winner of Barrington and Illinois Impact.

The 12U team coached by Denver Davis split its first two games, with a 9-8 win over Batavia in Game 2. The Storm will open up the tournament against McHenry Jr. Warriors at 9:30 a.m. at Field 3.

The 12U team coached by Josh Latimer lost both games Friday and will face the Belvidere Blasters, which won 3-1 and 12-0, at 8 a.m. today on Field 6.

The 14U team coached by Olivia Caron also lost both games and will face the Grayslake Pride at 11 a.m. today on Field 11.

Looking like a contender for the title this weekend, the 14U Storm, semifinalists last year, won, 9-8, over Marengo and, 5-1, over the Fox Valley Renegades.

For the 16U team, the Storm started the day with an impressive 8-1 win in four innings against the McHenry County Heatwave.

Hannah Mizgalski allowed one run

on one hit, walking two and striking out five in the circle for the Storm.

“You always want to make sure you come out with a good start because that sets the tone for the tournament,” said Mizgalski, who also went 2 for 3 at the plate. “If you come out with a good start, I think the rest of the tournament goes a little easier.”

Offensively for the Storm, Anna Criswell was 2 for 3 with two runs and a two-run double in the fourth inning, Madison Wagner was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI and Ally Versluys added an RBI single and a stolen base.

“We need to talk a lot,” said catcher Skylar Haring, who went 1 for 2 with a walk. “We need to stay confident and stay aggressive on defense and offense – jump on first pitches.”

According to the Sporting News, the Washington Wizards are set to offer Noah a max contract that will pay him almost $120 million over the next four seasons. Minnesota and Milwaukee also are interested in landing Noah.

One day after the Bulls continued to build for their future in drafting Denzel Valentine, it was their past that was stealing all the headlines.

Meeting with the New York media for his introductory news conference at Madison Square Garden on Friday, Derrick Rose made sure his old organization knew that in trading him, it also motivated him.

“I would like to tell them, ‘Thank you,’ ” Rose said.

When asked to elaborate, Rose said they sent him to a market he can embrace and, more importantly, one he believes will embrace him.

“Getting me another start,” said Rose, who played seven seasons in his hometown, missing the 2012-13 season after suffering a torn left ACL. “I’m grateful to be where I’m at. I could have been anywhere. Not saying all the other teams are bad places, but to be in this market, to be in the city [with] the legacy, the history of basketball, I’m grateful. I’m grateful to be here. I feel like they’re going to appreciate me a little bit more. It’s motivating.”

The other topic Rose was heartfelt about was why he switched his jersey from No. 1 to No. 25.

“For Chicago,” he said of the change. “They made me the man I am today, so I wanted to bring ’em with me.”

Rose wore No. 25 in high school to honor slain Chicago hoops star Benji Wilson.

Rose also released a letter on a website called The Cycle.

In that letter, he went through the moments he was informed of the trade, his feelings and the reality of no longer playing where he grew up.

“The first thing I thought about was my son PJ,” Rose wrote. “It’s hard enough to find time to see him during the season even when I’m in Chicago.

Now I’ll be in New York, hours away.

It’s a lot of miles. I know this is part of being an NBA player, though. We’ll find a way to make it work. I owe him that.

Cabrera drove a solo homer off Aaron Sanchez in the fifth and finished with three hits against his former team.

Frazier broke a 2-2 tie with a sharp single to left with two outs in the seventh against Jesse Chavez (4-2) after Tim Anderson led off with a double under third baseman Josh Donaldson’s glove.

David Robertson escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his 19th save in 21 chances. He struck out Edwin Encarnacion swinging at a low 3-2 fastball and retired Michael Saunders on a popup to end the game.

NIU announces Miech as new men’s soccer assistant coach

The Northern Illinois men’s soccer team announced the hiring of Jesse Miech as an assistant coach Thursday.

Miech comes to the Huskies after spending five seasons as head coach of Illinois Springfield (Division II). In 2013, Miech led UIS to eight victories, which was its best season in Division II. He also was an assistant coach at Saint Louis, Missouri State and Clemson. Miech replaces former associate head coach Garrett Biller, who took a position with U.S. Soccer.

“When I knew that we would be looking for a new assistant coach, I had a very specific profile of the kind of experience I wanted this person to have,” Northern Illinois head coach Eric Luzzi said. “I wanted to make sure that we brought someone in that had either had very good experience as an assistant at a good Division I program, or someone that had the experience of being a head coach at the Division II or Division III level. In Jesse Miech, we are fortunate to have someone that ticks both of these boxes.”

Ex-Huskie selected by Celtics in second round of NBA Draft

Just before the NBA Draft ended Thursday, a former Northern Illinois men’s basketball player became the Boston Celtics’ final selection of the night.

Former Huskie forward Abdel Nader was taken with the 58th pick of the 60-player draft.

Nader, a native of Egypt, played two seasons for the Huskies before transferring to Iowa State. In his freshman season, he averaged 10.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in 24.2 minutes in 31 games in 2011-12, before averaging 13.1 points and 5.6 points in 25.4 minutes in 19 games as a sophomore.

As a senior for Iowa State last season, Nader averaged 12.9 points and five rebounds in 31.1 minutes and helped the Cyclones reach the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to No. 1 seed Virginia in the Sweet 16.

Replacing both knees an option Dear Dr K: I have severe osteoarthritis in both knees. Should I have both knees replaced at one time, or separately?

Dear Reader: A patient of mine who was a newlywed once said to me: “We want three kids. Some days, I want them each separated by a year or two. Other days, I want triplets.”

You may have a similar dilemma. Knee replacement is a major operation and requires a hospital stay. During the procedure, the surgeon removes damaged sections of your shin bone and thigh bone. He or she carefully cuts the bone to precisely fit the shape of the replacement implants, then attaches the artificial joint at the knee.

Knee replacement also requires a rigorous program of physical therapy and rehabilitation after surgery. It’s just plain hard work. You need to be ready for that, as well.

Should you consider having both knees replaced during a single surgery (simultaneous replacement)? If you are in good health, it’s worth talking to your doctor about replacing both knees at once.

There are several benefits to simultaneous replacement. These include going under anesthesia only once and fewer total days in the hospital. You’ll also have only one period of rehabilitation, although it will be longer than the period that follows surgery on a single knee. This will allow you to resume normal activities sooner than two separate surgeries.

Replacing both knees at once also is a good option if both of your knee joints are in poor condition. That’s because during recovery from the replacement of one knee, you need the other knee to work harder.

If the other knee hurts when you place weight on it, this will make it difficult for you during physical therapy and would also slow your recovery.

Simultaneous replacement slightly increases the risk of blood clots or heart attack. However, such complications are rare. Still, simultaneous replacement is not for everyone. It is not recommended for patients with heart or lung disease, or people older than 80.

There also are benefits to separate operations months apart. These include a reduced risk of post-surgical infection and less chance of needing a second surgery on either knee, to fix problems with the first surgery.

So having both knees replaced simultaneously surely is a reasonable option for many people. You and your doctor need to consider all of the issues mentioned above.

Personally, I’m younger than 80, my arms are strong and I have fun using crutches. So, if both of my knees had come to the end of the road and needed replacement, and if I had no underlying heart or lung disease, I’d probably choose simultaneous replacement of both knees.

Whether you have your knees replaced together or separately, you’ll need to actively participate in a rehabilitation program.

It is critically important to your rapid recovery from the surgery.

After West’s double, the chance of a 4-4 spade fit was diminished, and why not try to make life tough for the opponents?

If I had held that East hand, I would have competed with four clubs. Pass was very timid. (Yes, if South then doubled four clubs, it would have gone down one, minus 200, but that would have been because the West hand was so poor.)

South showed excellent discipline in not bidding over three diamonds.

She realized that, with only one ace and a heart holding that was probably worthless, no game was going to make. In three diamonds, declarer lost one spade, two hearts and one diamond. Points aren’t everything.
