Construction’s temporary toll in downtown DeKalb It wasn’t yet 9 a.m., but there was action all around me as I stood at the northwest corner of Third Street and Lincoln Highway this week.

To the east, Lincoln and Fourth Street were completely barricaded off. A skid-steer loader was buzzing around the Union Pacific railroad tracks, where there’s ongoing work on the atgrade crossing.

To the west, construction barrels and horses blocked the westbound lane of traffic nearest the curb. A backhoe operator and two men with shovels were digging out a trench to get at the natural gas main beneath the street.

Somewhere a block to the north, I could hear a chainsaw from the tree-trimming work going on.

Good thing they don’t bother playing music.

This has been a trying construction season for downtown DeKalb, particularly for those businesses along the north side of Lincoln.

Nicor Gas has hired Cortland-based Northern Pipeline to replace 1,700 feet of natural gas main in the area. They’re also installing new service lines for all of the buildings, which is why they’ve torn up the sidewalks on the north side of Lincoln. (Buildings on the south side of Lincoln are served by a gas main that’s in the alley behind them.)

Brad Heims of Sycamore is the foreman on the job, which includes a crew of about 10 people. He said they plan to have moved off the main drag before Corn Fest Aug. 26-28, and hope to have all the work done by sometime in September.

“Keeping people moving through the area is a priority,” Heims said.

The workers holding the “stop” and “slow” signs are doing what they can, waving cars through, escorting pedestrians across the roads.

As Heims and I talked, Carolyn Canon was walking toward the door of MCR Framing, the shop she owns at 137 E. Lincoln. She stopped to chat with Heims about what they were doing that day, then opened the door to her store where a black and white cat eagerly awaited a morning treat.

Like other downtown businesses, MCR Framing is open during the construction, but Canon said it has had an effect. She’s seen would-be customers turn the corner, look

Stores that depend on walk-in traffic are probably hurting more than those that offer specialty services, she said. But this work hasn’t been disruptive as the downtown overhaul that the city undertook in late last decade, she said, and although there’s a lot going on at once, it’s better to get it all out of the way now.

“In my opinion, better it should all happen at the same time because once it’s done it’ll be done,” Canon said. “If they were tearing up everything here and then Union Pacific closed (the intersection of Fourth and Lincoln), that would be even worse, I think.”

Canon’s got an optimistic outlook, but she is concerned about how long the work will continue, especially because MCR Framing is one of several downtown merchants planning an open house July 8.

“I’m a little concerned that [the street] is not going to be customer friendly by that night, and they’re just starting the 200 block and that’s the block that has the most gift stores, and I think that’s going to be a problem for them,” she said.

There’s never a good time to have the neighborhood around your business disrupted, and downtown DeKalb is about as disrupted as it has been in years.

Soon enough, the pipeline workers will have moved off the main drag to Pine and Locust streets. The railroad crossing will reopen to vehicles, too.

In the meantime, the Northern Pipeline workers appear to be doing their best to make the area navigable for pedestrians and drivers.

It might look chaotic, but there’s not need to stay out of downtown DeKalb. You just might have to walk a little to visit some of the businesses there.

Orchard hosts camp to keep ‘farm and country kids safe’

rgillespie@shawmedia.com MALTA – Zeke Wackelin previously had an accident on his ATV, but learned since then from participating in the DeKalb County Farm Bureau’s Farm Safety Camp how to be more cautious.

The farm bureau held its camp event Thursday, aimed at providing safety information to children who live on farms or just in rural areas.

“From the farm bureau’s perspective, agriculture is one of the most hazardous occupations, one of the most hazardous industries,” said Mariam Wassmann, director of information for the DeKalb County Farm Bureau. “So we feel that there’s a real need to share to these safety messages.”

This year, 65 children took part in the daylong camp at Jonamac Orchard in Malta. The camp is offered every two years and has been running since 1994, Wassmann said.

The youth, ages 8 to 12, were all smiles and excited to do things such as climb up into the tractor that had a mower attached, or even play around in the cab of the 18-wheel semitrailer. But as demonstrators pointed out to them, safety has to always supercede fun.

In fact, it was at the camp in a previous year that Zeke, now 11 years old and headed to sixth grade, found out what he did wrong the day he tried to take his ATV uphill and it ended up flipping over. Gratefully, he said, he wasn’t seriously hurt.

“I used to try to go really fast, and make not-really-good choices. I don’t do that anymore,” said Zeke, who lives on a farm. He credits the farm safety camp with teaching him how to more cautiously ride his four-wheeler.

As part of the camp, 10 stations were set up with different farm machinery, emergency equipment and other things children living on or near a farm, or just in a rural community, might encounter.

Representatives from companies that provided the equipment and resources talked about how to properly use or be around them. I n addition to the ATVs, semis and tractors, there was safety information provided about bicycles, chemicals, electricity, as well as grain bins and wagons.

The children then took turns rotating through the stations throughout the day.

Tiffany Pitstick had three of her children participate in the camp. Although they live in Sycamore, she said they have family members who are farmers and the Pisticks often visit their farm.

“I hope that they have fun and learn how to be around farm machines,” she said of her children participating in the safety camp.

The farm bureau collaborates with several local companies and organizations, including Bethany Animal Hospital and Malta Mustangs 4-H Club, which provided the farm animals. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office demonstrated bike safety, and Northern Illinois University’s Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic discussed hearing protections.

County unemployment rate up from last May DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – DeKalb County’s unemployment rate stood at 5.3 percent in May, up slightly from 5.1 percent in May 2015, according to preliminary figures released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The jobless rate in the city of DeKalb was 5.7 percent last month, up from 5.4 percent in May 2015.

The unemployment rate identifies those who are out of work and looking for work. It is not tied to collecting unemployment insurance benefits.

Statewide, most metro areas saw an increase in their over-the-year unemployment rate.

“While some metro areas saw job growth, too many didn’t,” IDES Director Jeff Mays said in a news release. “Key structural reforms can help the state grow more jobs as we sharpen our efforts to help unemployed job-seekers get back to work.”

Illinois businesses added jobs in seven metro areas, in which the largest increases were seen in: Lake-Kenosha (+2.2 percent, +9,000), Rockford (+1.6 percent, +2,400), and Elgin (+1.2 percent, +3,000). Illinois businesses lost jobs in seven metro areas including Bloomington (-2.9 percent, -2,800), Carbondale-Marion (-1.6 percent, -900), and the Quad Cities (-1.5 percent, -2,700).

The not seasonally adjusted Illinois rate was 5.6 percent in May 2016 and stood at 12.2 percent at its peak in this economic cycle in January 2010. Sandwich council OKs purchase of former Design Stairs office

The former Design Stairs building will be renovated for use as the Sandwich police station.

SANDWICH – The Sandwich City Council voted to buy the former Design Stairs office building, 1251 E. Sixth St., for a new police station at its June 13 council meeting.

The purchase price of the building and an additional 1.73 acres east of the building is $500,000, according to Mayor Rick Olson. He said the estimated amount to be paid for changing it into a police station has not yet been determined.

The council is still study-

ing various options.

But, he said, the total cost of the new plan would be much lower than the amount quoted for a new police station city officials were considering, which was estimated at $7.5 million.

The new police station, officially called a Public Safety Center, was originally to be built at the southeast corner of West Center Street and Gletty Road.

The next regular council meeting will be at 7 p.m.

Monday. Both will be in the city hall annex, just west of the city hall/opera house.

In 2009, Syngenta released a new strain of corn seed into the United States market before receiving import approval from China. Without import approval for this strain, known as Agrisure Viptera, China rejected U.S. corn shipments in 2013 and 2014, causing a global collapse in U.S. corn prices, according to a news release from the lawsuit legal team. The export market disruptions with China cost U.S. farmers billions of dollars.

DeKALB – An iconic World War II aircraft will be on display and be open to the public for tours and rides starting Tuesday.

The fully restored Boeing B-17 bomber will arrive at the DeKalb-Taylor Municipal Airport, and be here through July 4.

The aircraft is one of only 10 B-17s remaining, from more than 12,000 that originally were manufactured

for combat, that can still be flown, according to a news release from nonprofit Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona.

The aircraft will be in DeKalb as part of The Flying Legends of Victory Tour hosted by the Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona. B-17s were used from 1941 to 1945, in every war theater, the release said.

“An aircraft of stunning beauty and technological achievement, the B-17 also has breath-taking stories to tell of courage and service by Americans during one of the most important periods in U.S. history,” according to the news release. “Aircraft tours show where brave, young airmen defended huge bomber formations from enemy attack or searched for targets through the top-secret Norden bomb sight.”

The aircraft will be open for public tours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to July 4.

Indian Creek District 425 superintendent to retire

browland@shawmedia.com SHABBONA – The longtime leader of Indian Creek Community School District 425 will retire from her post June 30.

Indian Creek Community School District 425 will host a retirement dinner for outgoing Superintendent Pamela Rockwood at 6 p.m. today at Indian Oaks Country Club, 603 Preserve Road, Shabbona.

The public is invited and encouraged to bring questions for the board and Rockwood. Rockwood has served as the district’s superintendent for the past decade, according to a news release from the country club. The district serves 750 students in DeKalb County, Lee County and a small part of LaSalle County.

Rockwood announced her retirement in May in a newsletter. In a letter to the community, she noted that she has helped the district add more than $10 million to its reserve fund.

She also noted other awards and accolades the district has earned under

She is leaving to take an assistant professor job at Texas A&M University, according to the letter.

In the 2014-15 school year, the school board gave Rockwood a compensation and benefit package worth $188,901, including a base salary of

$159,323, $20,680 in retirement benefits, a $2,400 auto allowance and 35 vacation, sick and personal days, according to the district’s website.

By comparison, for the same school year, DeKalb School District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller got a compensation and benefit package worth $236,042, including a base salary of $191,883.43, $19,908.55 in retirement enhancements and $24,250.46 in other benefits.

Moeller got 35 vacation and sick days, according to the district’s website.

Moeller oversees DeKalb County’s largest school district, which serves

more than 6,300 students in 11 buildings.

The school board met Monday to hire Rockwood’s successor.

Board President Vaughn Boehne didn’t return a message Thursday seeking comment on the district’s new superintendent. Rockwood also didn’t return a message left at the district’s office. Board Vice President Joshua Merchant couldn’t be reached for comment. An attorney from the Chicago-based law firm that represents the district, Scariano, Himes and Petrarca, also couldn’t be reached for comment.

Board member James Hicks said the district hired Michael Lindy to replace Rockwood as superintendent.

Lindy is superintendent of El Paso-Gridley School District 11, which served about 1,200 at five buildings in the 2014-15 school year. The district is based in El Paso, Illinois.

Hicks said the board interviewed at least four candidates for the job.

He said Lindy was the best qualified.

Lindy couldn’t be reached for comment after 5 p.m. Thursday.

2 sent to hospital after Plank Road accident

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Two people were taken to the hospital Thursday after a crash on Plank Road, near North Grove Elementary School.

The accident occurred about 10 a.m. when Mary Broerman, 58, of the 200 block of Greenwood Acres Drive, DeKalb was driving east on Plank Road

west of Lingren Road in Sycamore.

Broerman stopped for another car in the roadway and was struck from behind by a 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Michael White, 59, of the 100 block of Tilton Park Drive, DeKalb, according to a news release.

Both White and Broerman were taken to Kishwuakee hospital. White was cited for failing to reduce his speed to avoid an accident.

DeKALB – Police are asking anyone with information to come forward about a string of car burglaries in DeKalb’s south side.

DeKalb police took to social media Wednesday advising local drivers to remove valuables from their cars and keep their cars locked.

Authorities could not be reached for comment Wednesday or Thursday, but posted to Facebook that “vehicle burglary is most often a crime of opportunity” and noted the department has seen a rash of them in the past few days Whether drivers are away from their cars for just a few minutes or the rest of the day, keeping it locked will help guard against being burglarized, police said.

It is also recommended people close their windows tightly, park in well-lit areas, and remove any valuables.

The burglaries have occurred in mostly the southern parts of DeKalb.

Anyone who has been burglarized or has information is encouraged to call DeKalb police at 815-748-8400.

DeKALB – The Kishwaukee Family YMCA will serve lunch at three locations in DeKalb County this summer thanks to partnerships with the Wal-Mart Foundation and the Voluntary Action Center.

Meals are open to any child (under 18) in the community and do not have to be members of the YMCA, according to a news release.

Through Aug. 23, meals will be served at noon Monday through Friday at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA in the Lap Pool Lobby, 2500 W. Bethany Road, Sycamore.

Meals will be served at 11:30 a.m.

Monday through Thursday at University Village, 722 N. Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb, through Aug. 18.

And meals will be served at noon Tuesdays and Thursdays at Liberty Park, at 10th and Lewis Street through Aug. 11.

CHICAGO – Illinois officials and residents began assessing damage Thursday after six tornadoes damaged rural communities in the northern part of the state amid powerful storms that swept across the Upper Midwest.

The National Weather Service said an EF2 tornado with estimated top wind speeds of 115 to 125 mph cut a path more than 11 miles long and about four football fields wide into the city of Pontiac on Wednesday night. Officials said at least seven people were injured in that tornado. Survey crews also identified three EF1 tornadoes, with maximum winds up to 110 mph, that struck Cissna Park, near Ottawa and West Brooklyn.

No injuries resulted from those storms.

“We are fortunate things are not worse and are thankful there were no fatalities,” Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner said in a Thursday morning statement.

In the Pontiac area, about two dozen homes – 10 to 15 outside of the city and 13 within the city limits – and nine commercial businesses were damaged, according to Pontiac Fire Chief Scott Runyon.

Illinois insurance co-op sues feds over health law payments

CHICAGO – A struggling Illinois health insurance co-op is suing the federal government, claiming it is being shortchanged $72.8 million in promised payments under the Affordable Care Act. Chicago-based Land of Lincoln Health filed the lawsuit Thursday in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C. At least four other insurers have filed similar claims over the socalled risk corridor payments, a temporary provision of the health care law meant to help unprofitable insurers and stabilize consumer prices during the first three years of the law’s new insurance exchanges.

Survey: 1M people lost services due to Illinois budget fight

CHICAGO – A new survey of Illinois human service providers shows nearly two-thirds have cut programs because of the state budget standoff, leaving almost 1 million people without services.

The United Way of Illinois released results Wednesday of a survey of 429 agencies that have contracts with the state.

Illinois owes those waiting to be paid an average of $525,000.

The percentage of agencies that have made cuts was up from 48 percent in January.

More than half of agencies said they will have to stop serving clients if the stalemate continues another six months.

Nearly 60 percent have used cash reserves.

The areas hardest hit were substance abuse services, childhood education and mental health treatment.

Lawmakers have gone almost a year without agreeing on a budget.

Videos released showing attacks by Cook jail inmates

CHICAGO – Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart is releasing videos of inmates attacking deputies at the jail he oversees after his release of other videos showing excessive force by deputies.

Dart said Thursday that the incidents took place in the maximum-security divisions where the most violent and disruptive inmates are housed.

The release of the videos is part of an effort Dart initiated when he said in April that he was releasing the excessive-force videos because the public had a right to see them.

In a news release, Dart suggested the inmate videos illustrate the dangers faced by those who work in the jail.

He said more videos will be released when investigations are completed and prosecutors file criminal charges against the inmates.

Split Supreme Court nixes Obama’s immigration plans

WASHINGTON – A short-handed and deeply divided Supreme Court deadlocked Thursday on President Barack Obama’s immigration plan to help millions living in the U.S. illegally, effectively killing the plan for the rest of his presidency and raising the stakes even further for the November elections.

The hotly debated direction of America’s national immigration policy as well as the balance of power on the high court now will be determined in large part by the presidential and congressional elections. Immigration and the court vacancy created by Justice Antonin Scalia’s death in February already were featuring prominently in the campaign.

Scalia’s vote likely would have meant an outright ruling against Obama’s immigration expansion rather than the 4-4 tie, a much more significant defeat for the president and immigrant advocates.

Democrat Hillary Clinton declared that as president she would work to restore the programs and go further. Republican Donald Trump said he would make sure Obama’s “unconstitutional actions” never came back.

On immigration, the tie is not likely to lead to an increase in deportations since the president retains ample discretion to decide whom to deport. But the ruling stymies his effort to bring people “out from the shadows” by giving them the right to work legally in the U.S. One of the Obama programs would have protected the parents of children who are in the country legally. The other was an expansion of a program that benefits people who were brought to the U.S. as children. Obama decided to move forward on his own after Republicans won control of the Senate in 2014 and the chances for an immigration overhaul, already remote, were further damaged.

The federal appeals court in New Orleans had said the Obama administration lacked the authority to shield up to 4 million immigrants from deportation and make them eligible for work permits without approval from Congress. That ruling now remains in place.

Texas had led 26 Republican-dominated states in challenging the Obama initiatives in court. The lawsuit was heard by U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen in Brownsville, Texas.

Hanen previously had criticized the administration for lax immigration enforcement.

More reasons for reforming redistricting

If you need any more reasons in favor of reforming Illinois’ highly partisan redistricting process, The Associated Press came up with several this week.

The AP reported that minorities are greatly underrepresented in the 177-seat Illinois Legislature.

For example, Latinos make up nearly 17 percent of the state’s population, but have just over 7 percent representation in the Legislature.

Asians make up 5 percent of Illinois’ population, but have no representation in the Legislature.

Overall, whites make up 62 percent of Illinois population, but hold nearly 75 percent of the seats in the House and Senate combined.

The AP analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data to determine how closely representation in the Legislature matched the demographics of Illinois residents.

Clearly, the current redistricting process, whereby majority politicians draw the maps every 10 years, doesn’t serve the people well.

Democrats controlled the process the last time in 2011. They drew maps that increased their 64-54 House seat advantage in 2010 to 71-47 after the 2012 election.

Likewise, Democratic-drawn maps boosted Democrats’ Senate seat advantage from 35-24 after the 2010 election to 40-19 after 2012.

When politicians manipulate district maps, they skew results in their favor, no matter the consequences to fair representation.

Map manipulation also suppresses competition. That suppression continues in 2016.

More than 59 percent of House seats are uncontested – 70 out of 118.

Worse, fully 70 percent (28 out of 40) races for Senate seats are uncontested.

Given Illinois’ many financial and budgetary problems, the lack of contested legislative races is unbelievable.

Fortunately, the State Board of Elections recently approved the Independent Map Amendment for the November ballot – pending a lawsuit by allies of powerful Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan to suppress this common-sense reform effort to depoliticize the process.

Madigan is the same guy who for decades has heavily influenced the inequitable, partisan redistricting system that is unfair to minorities, skews election results, stifles competition and thwarts the will of the people.

It’s long past time to cast this unfair, broken system aside.

Hiding illness within Obamacare Illinois seems to be working its way from the Affordable Care Act to the Unaffordable Care Act, and state regulators are not helping.

UnitedHealthcare already announced that it would no longer participate in Illinois’ Affordable Care Act health insurance exchange, called Get Covered Illinois.

Costs were higher and participants were sicker than anticipated, so the health insurer that in 2016 offered Obamacare plans in 34 states was cutting back for 2017 to three states, and Illinois will not be one of them.

In April, the insurers who will be participating in the Illinois health insurance exchange had to tell the Illinois Department of Insurance what their rates would be in 2017. So what’s the bad news?

They won’t say. If other states’ announced hikes are a good predictor of ours, Illinois residents could see rates increase by roughly 50 percent.

The department’s acting director, Anne Melissa Dowling, will not release the 2017 rate information until its mandatory publication date of Aug. 1. She considers the rates to be exempt from the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. So why should you care?

The Aug. 1 release is about a month before the state regulators issue their report on the rates. If the public or the public watchdog groups want to react to the rates, there is little time to do so.

Thirty-one of the nation’s states already have released the information, including our neighbors to the east and west. When consumer groups get access to the rate info, they usually are able to push back and get rate hikes reduced.

Illinois should be transparent about the coming health insurance rates. Now that Obamacare forces people into the insurance pool or taxes them because they are not, the state is obligated to help control consumer costs.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

To the Editor: Since construction of rental properties west of Annie Glidden Road, the neighborhood in the northwest corner of DeKalb has been in transition. I want to clarify my characterization of landlords’ attention to their properties in this neighborhood.

There are, and have been, a number of responsible landlords who continue to give attention to the reinvestment needed to keep their properties in good condition. In reality, there also have been properties that have fallen into disrepair. An example of which is August 2014, during “move-in” weekend for Northern Illinois University, an apartment building was closed down after unsanitary living conditions were brought to our attention by residents.

While many residents in the neighborhood have transitioned from student housing to family housing, conditions of all properties and services have not kept up with the changes in the neighborhood. The neighborhood north and west of the campus, known as Annie Glidden North, is in need of transformation.

We need a day for appreciating small things

To the Editor: We set aside days to honor (appreciate) certain professions and people,

mothers, fathers, teachers, nurses, etc.

I was wondering if there is a day set aside to just appreciate ordinary little things in our lives. I could find no such listing.

Not to be presumptuous, but why don’t we set aside an Appreciation Day of our own just to appreciate the good things in our lives?

As the old song put it, “accentuate the positive.”

True, there is much in life that is negative. Newspapers get called to task for reporting so much bad news, but there are also good news items that perhaps you don’t find in the headlines.

The human interest stories often escape our perusal on the inside pages of a newspaper.

Someone stops traffic while a mother duck escorts her little ones across a busy street. We can all appreciate and relate to that.

There are times to truly appreciate something, when we have had to be without it. We have to have been in darkness to appreciate the light. Think of a power outage and how we appreciate it once it’s restored.

This is also true when it comes to be-

At Wednesday’s rally, my friend Sue Klein, who is 50, stood next to me as we waited, and waited. And waited some more. At one point, she frowned and waved her arm toward the many young adults who had summoned the energy and the will to leap onto granite benches in front of us, thus further blocking our view of the stage.

“I’ve turned into my father,” she said.

She was referring to the late, great Ralph G. Klein, who was sitting in Municipal Stadium when the Cleveland Indians won the World Series. In 1948.

“When I used to complain about not having seen a championship in my lifetime, he used to say, ‘You don’t know suffering,’ ” she said. She gestured again toward our millennial view-blocking fans. “They don’t know suffering. They have no idea.”

Small random acts of kindness – appreciate kindness – a language the blind can see and the deaf can hear.

One of my favorite hymns is, “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”

Substitute “appreciation,” for peace.

The last line is, “Let it begin with me.”

We all have things we try to avoid in life. My top three are large sports crowds (frightening), long waits (infuriating) and standing in the hot sun (dehydrating).

On Wednesday, I joined an estimated 1 million sports fans in downtown Cleveland to stand in the hot sun and wait five hours to welcome home our NBA champions, the Cleveland Cavaliers.

I didn’t care that I couldn’t even see the stage at the rally. I didn’t care that the sun turned my face into an animated version of a beefsteak tomato.

I didn’t even care, much, that the team took so long to wind its way through the streets of Cleveland that it was more than two hours late for its own rally.

I’ve waited since second grade for a sports championship in Cleveland. I could wait a little longer.

Besides, there’s something about living in a suspended state of pinch-me astonishment that makes the time fly.

Right now, we are an entire region of people whose toes haven’t touched the ground since that final buzzer in Sunday’s game against the Golden State Warriors. “Everybody’s friendly, no matter where you go,” the air conditioner repairman told me yesterday

Nick Hansen will be the guest organist at the Malta United Methodist Church, Third and Sprague streets, at 9 a.m. Sunday. The community is invited to hear him play.

Hansen is son of Valerie and Peter Hansen of Lindenwood and the grandson of Joan and John Hansen Nick of Malta.

Hansen Nick started taking piano lessons from Ardith Berg at the age of 7. He began performing recitals and playing piano at his church when he was 8 years old.

He taught himself to play the organ by studying YouTube videos

and watching the feet of the organist playing the pedals.

He plays clarinet in band and will be a freshman at Rochelle Township High School this fall.

He accompanies soloists, ensemble and choir at school along with his church choir.

In 2014, he began playing for his church worship services at Presbyterian Church in Rochelle.

He loves opera and classical music.

He can listen to a song a few times and play it without the music. He writes music in his spare time and follows the musical talents of his father and grandfather.

Hansen also will play at the 9 a.m. service on the second and fourth Sundays in July and third and fourth Sundays in August.

BRIEFS First Congregational to host charity auction

Somonauk Library has launched its Summer Reading Program for all ages.

During the next two months, the library will host a range of free activities for children, teens and adults to encourage and support a love of reading. Participants can win prizes for reaching their reading goals.

Julie Harte, library director and her staff have planned programs to make the library a great place to read, learn and discover what’s available for their enjoyment. There is plenty of fun for children, teens and adults.

KishHealth System’s Community Health Network, now part of Northwestern Medicine, hosted a bike-tochurch event April 24. Each of the participating organizations are part of the Community Health Network and included Cornerstone Church, Federated Church, Salem Lutheran Church, and Our Savior’s Church in Sandwich, as well as Bethany Lutheran Church in Leland and Shabbona United Church of Christ in Shabbona.

There were 150 participating bikers in the event, and each received bike safety education, a water bottle and reflective stickers. The Sandwich Police Department Cadets also were in attendance on the route to ensure the bikers were safe.

The Community Health Network is an initiative that connects outside organizations and the health system, empowering those organizations to serve a larger role in the health of their community. Members of the Community Health Network include faith-based organizations and service groups. These community partners have access to a wealth of support including preventative medicine, follow-up care, wellness education, health awareness and support during illness or hospitalization.

The Community Health Network bridges the goodwill of community organizations with the resources of KishHealth System to find new ways for community members to be healthy.

Caron, KV Storm ready for anticipated Storm Dayz softball tournament

Now she’s getting joy out of being in the third-base box.

The former Rochelle and Kishwaukee College standout has transitioned to coaching one of the Kishwaukee Valley Storm 14U team as

it heads into the highly anticipated Storm Dayz tournament this weekend.

“They all look to me instead of me looking at the couch,” said Caron, 24, who is in her second year coaching the team. “I also want to just get out on the field. It’s really hard to just sit back and watch. ... This was my passion, and I love teaching it to other girls, and when I see the love of the game in their eyes, too, it’s an amaz-

ing feeling. I can’t even describe it.”

The tournament that features 74 teams over five age divisions begins with pool play starting at 8 a.m. at Sycamore Park and is a North American Fastpitch Association Illinois State Tournament. It will span three days – weather permitting – with bracket play Saturday and Sunday.

While there’s plenty of talented competition in the large field – and

“We want to win,” said Brooke Scott, an 11-year-old from Sycamore.

While Caron said she has to prepare as if everything will go off without a hitch, last year rain put a damper on the tournament, and it is in the forecast this weekend.

Unlike Eddie Murphy, Johan Bergseth is “Coming Back to America,” or what he regards as his second home.

The Norwegian former Northern Illinois men’s soccer star’s story began as an exchange student in August 1981 at now extinct Forest View High School, where he was treated not like the heir to the throne in Zamuda like Murphy’s character in the iconic 1988 film, but the King of the Winter Fantasies dance. After helping the Falcons win a Mid-Suburban League title, he was a four-year starter for Northern Illinois – earning thirdteam All-America honors and leading the Huskies to a then school-best No. 16 national ranking.

During his time in America, he became a basketball junkie, most often found watching former Northern Illinois men’s basketball coach John McDougal’s daily practices. It’s that passion inherited by his youngest daughter, Andrine, that brings us full circle to this summer.

Bergseth and wife Karine are chaperones for Andrine, niece Wilma, and the Asker Aliens’ exhibition tour. Since Norway doesn’t have high school-sponsored sports, club teams are the norm and, despite some parents’ wishes for California, Bergseth used his love of Chicago, its suburbs, and his area connections to land them here.

The Asker club has lined up to play 11 games in Illinois, including facing off against teams such as Sycamore, DeKalb, Indian Creek and Hinckley-Big Rock, beginning this weekend.

“Norwegians are normally very shy compared to me, but I love the people in the Chicago area and I hope they see how great it is, get a good basketball experience – hope we don’t lose every game – and in talking to local girls and boys, learn about what they have in common, and have a trip they’ll never forget,” said Bergseth, who is now a salesman, adviser and consultant for a top software recruitment company and stays fit serving as a strength and conditioning trainer. “I want them to learn more about the U.S. than what’s in movies or in political campaign headlines.”

At the end of their schedule, Asker will face Hinckley-Big Rock for a second time, this time at All-State Arena as a prelim to that evening’s WNBA contest between the Chicago Sky and Washington Mystics.

Having brought his own family to America for vacations or to indulge his appreciation of basketball, Bergseth has returned for a Bulls game, high school playoffs or college basketball, including NCAA tournament action. Now his main desire is for the Asker players to get a taste of the game invented in America, coupled with a chance to show the traveling party the location he believes adopted him to the same degree he adopted it.

His impact at Northern Illinois as a freshman was summed up best

by Huskies’ three-time MVP Frank Schmalz.

“I wished I had a couple more years of eligibility,” recalled Schmalz, who graduated three years before Bergseth and attended his 2008 induction into the Huskie Hall of Fame. “I also remember he was always smiling or laughing. Even at his young age when freshmen didn’t play that

much, he gave us a boost by scoring goals and with his overall play-making abilities. He was just a fun-loving kid whose attitude was infectious.”’

Former Huskie and current Palatine boys and girls coach Willie Fillian drew a correlation to a largerthan-life personality.

“He reminded me of Bill Clinton,” he said. “He’ll shake your hand, smile at you, and then only want to talk about you. He made you feel like the most important person in the room.”

Fillian also referenced another legend.

“Prior to meeting him, everyone referred to him by one name similar to the basketball word saying ‘Michael.’

I kept hearing others talk with such high regard: ‘Did you see when Johan did that? Only Johan could pull that off. Johan could do it.’ When I finally met him and saw him play, he didn’t disappoint. He was every bit the player made out to be. No weaknesses – skill, quick, intelligent, outstanding vision, good tackler, exceptional in the air, play any position and was always the fittest on the team.

“He seemed to possess these skinny ‘rubber’ legs that could just bend in any direction at any time. When he was dribbling at you, you had no clue which way he was going to cut.

I considered having a role as co-captain with him an honor, and I learned much of what I understand about leadership from him.”

Although equally enamored by soccer skills, teammate Bobby Johnson had other distinct memories.

“There was the Johan hair. It was always moving. It was alive,” Johnson recalled. “My first impression of him as a freshman was that of a thoroughbred. He was the most talented player on the team. We had good players from Granite City and Chicago (powerhouse schools), but he was the most talented: tall, strong, fast, great endurance and foot skills.

“One of his first games was against Illinois State and they were very aggressive. Johan was clipped in the ankles constantly by their players. After the game, his ankle was swollen to the size of a clincher softball, but he never complained and his ankle was sore the rest of the season,” Johnson said. “The best part of having him as a teammate was that he checked his ego at the door. He was personable with everyone on the team and everyone loved Johan. We had a great time no matter if it was practice, traveling, playing or at social events.”

It was no surprise that the Norwegian jumped at the opportunity when friend, now turned Sycamore principal Tim Carlson, offered to host the Asker Aliens Club, a girls basketball team from Norway. That led to additional opportunities against some other familiar programs such as DeKalb, Hinckley-Big Rock and Indian Creek.

The third-team All-America soccer player and Huskie Hall of Fame inductee’s daughter and niece are on the Asker roster that begins an 11-game tour Saturday at Sycamore. New Spartans coach Adam Wickness and his Sycamore varsity play at 9 a.m. against Asker before Rock Falls serves as a second opponent at 11 a.m.

With former DeKalb coach Heath Kent’s replacement still pending, Sara Haughee and Brad Bjelk have been sharing coaching duties for the Barbs, who have both their varsity and junior varsity participating in the Harvest Games.

On Tuesday, Hinckley-Big Rock coach Doug Brewington and the Royals welcome the Norway team at 6 p.m., while Plano serves as the 7 p.m. opponent. Somonauk and Sandwich are also competing in H-BR’s summer tourney.

The Royals were participants in earlier portions of the Harvest Games.

“It’s a unique opportunity for our girls to interact with the team from Norway, so we welcomed the chance to compete on the court and establish a friendship off it,” Brewington said.

“For us, this summer is a chance to

sharpen our skills at both ends of the court, perhaps move some players around and experiment a little with different roles.”

Back at the Harvest Games on Thursday night, Indian Creek coach Paul Muchmore, whose Timberwolves captured third-place in the 2016 IHSA Class 1A State Finals, play Asker at 6:50 p.m. – sandwiched between games against South Elgin and the host HCA Lions.

Thanks to Brewington and H-BR’s Royals, the Asker experience concludes with an unparalleled event July 1. Asker and the Royals play each other at Allstate Arena at 3 p.m. and are then special guests for that evening’s Chicago Sky vs. Washington Mystics WNBA game that tips off at 7:30 p.m.

Bulls select Denzel Valentine with 14th pick

CHICAGO – The Bulls drafted Michigan State small forward Denzel Valentine with the 14th overall pick Thursday in the NBA Draft.

The 2015-16 AP national player of the year, Valentine joins a team that traded former MVP Derrick Rose to New York on Wednesday in a blockbuster.

The deal that brought one of the most successful and disappointing periods in the franchise’s history to an end.

Valentine averaged 19.2 points per game, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.8 assists last season. But a lingering knee injury might have raised concerns for some teams.

The Bulls, who also held the 48th pick, is in transition after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2008 in its first season under coach Fred Hoiberg. The Bulls sent guard Justin Holiday and a 2017 second-round pick with Rose to New York in exchange for

center Robin Lopez and guards Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant.

But more than anything, the deal was a turn-the-page moment. It signaled the official end to a feel-good story that went awry years ago.

With Rose at his explosive best, the Bulls soared to heights they had not experienced since Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen led them to a pair of championship three-peats in the 1990s.

The South Side native went from Rookie of the Year to All-Star to the NBA’s youngest MVP in his first three seasons.

But the story changed when he tore the ACL in his left knee in the 2012 playoff opener. He sat out the following season and had his long-awaited comeback cut short by a torn meniscus in his right knee. The old explosiveness never returned on a consistent basis, and Rose did not mesh on the court with All-Star Jimmy Butler. He also talked openly about becoming a free agent in 2017.

The Associated Press BOSTON – For the first time since he joined the White Sox, James Shields gave them a decent chance to win.

It was the bullpen that coughed up runs on Thursday against the Red Sox. Shields held Boston to one run through five innings and left with a 4-1 lead in the sixth, but the Red Sox rallied to take the lead, squander it, and then send the game into extra innings before winning it 8-7 in the 10th on Xander Bogaerts’ walkoff single.

“My first three outings weren’t very good,” he said. “So it’s definitely positive.... Coming in here to Boston, one of the best teams, best hitting teams in the league, and to do what we did, three out of four, is pretty good.”

After struggling in his first three starts for the Sox, getting just five outs against Cleveland on Saturday, Shields recorded his first scoreless first inning since joining the Sox. He cruised into the sixth before walking the first two batters and giving way.

Pitching two full innings for the first time in more than five years, Craig Kimbrel got out of a bases-loaded jam with nobody out in the 10th before Bogaerts delivered the game-winning single in the bottom half.

“We’re staring a four-game sweep at home. And that’s never a good thing,” manager John Farrell said. “So you find a way to pull out all the stops. ...

“I was nervous for the first tournament, but after that I’ve gotten used to it,” said Caron, who also was an assistant coach for Rochelle’s varsity last year.

While the players, especially the older ones in high school, are used to playing with different teams during the spring season, the KV Storm have done a nice job of coming together as a team with players coming from DeKalb, Sycamore, Genoa and Rochelle.

“Sometimes the out-of-town tournaments help,” said Taiylor Karasewski, a 14-year-old from DeKalb. “Being at the hotel and just swimming and sometimes just doing team things helps; and the more games you play, the better the team gets.”

24 Hormone may help treat polycystic ovaries Dear Dr. K: I have polycystic ovary syndrome and treatments are helping only a little. My doctor says there has been recent progress in understanding what causes it, and I should not give up hope.

What is your opinion?

Dear Reader: For readers who don’t know about polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), I should explain a few things first. PCOS is pretty common: About 10 to 20 percent of women have it to some degree. The key features of this illness are multiple cysts in the ovaries, failure of the ovaries to release eggs (and resulting difficulty getting pregnant), irregular menstrual periods and high levels of androgens.

Androgens are “male” hormones that females also make, but in lower amounts than men. High levels in women can cause acne and more body hair. They also can cause loss of scalp hair in a pattern like that in men who are becoming bald.

Women with PCOS also are at higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, obesity, elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides (two types of fat), and atherosclerosis, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

So a lot of very different things are going wrong in PCOS. Doctors and scientists long have sought a single abnormality that triggers all the rest. If such an abnormality was found to exist, it would become a target for treatment: Treat that single abnormality, and you simultaneously might fix all of the things that go wrong in PCOS. That single abnormality has been elusive, perhaps until now. In early 2016, scientists from China reported low levels of a hormone made by fat are responsible for PCOS. Until about 20 years ago, we thought

We thought they were a place where we stored energy for future use – that was right. We thought they provided insulation to keep our insides warm in cold weather – that also was right.

But it’s not that simple. First, our bodies have two main kinds of fat: white fat and brown fat. (There’s also “beige” fat, but let’s not digress.) White fat cells store fat. In contrast, brown fat cells burn fat.

Second, we now know fat cells also are powerful little hormone factories. They make hormones that travel throughout our body, influencing our appetite, the rate of our metabolism and many other aspects of our health.

The Chinese scientists transplanted extra brown fat cells into rats with PCOS. All at once, many of the abnormalities of PCOS promptly started to improve.

Then the scientists discovered a hormone called adiponectin that is made by brown fat cells was likely responsible. When rats with PCOS were given just adiponectin, all of the features of PCOS promptly improved.

It remains to be seen if what is true in rats is true in humans, and whether the discovery will lead to improved treatment of PCOS. If so, many women stand to benefit.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY 21-year-old son, “Evan,” recently Jeanne moved out to be Phillips with his girlfriend. They live in a small apartment and say they cannot afford a lot beyond the basics, including internet. They spend every moment at my house when they are not working. They use our internet, eat our food and drink our beverages. I know this might sound terrible, but I want my freedom.

I don’t feel I should be obligated to give them free food and internet every day, considering they show up with new phones and new speakers in their cars. When I try to discuss it with them, they accuse me of being “mean.”

If they would come to visit with me instead of just hanging around, I’d welcome it. But neither of them hardly speaks to me while they’re here. How do I approach this without making Evan and his girlfriend feel completely unwelcome? – Mom Needing Space In Texas Dear Mom: Set some boundaries by telling Evan and his girlfriend a version of what you have written to me. Explain they’re welcome to come over once a week or twice a month – provided they act like good guests while they’re there. Then describe for them what that means, including staying off the internet and leaving their new cellphones in the car.

And while you’re at it, don’t forget to mention gracious guests occasionally invite their hostess out for a bite. That’s not being “mean”; it’s explaining the facts of life they seem to have missed while becoming the adults they are.

If you want to know whether they are valid, while you are thanking them for their generosity, ask your in-laws why they arranged the fund that way.

At the bridge table, a king -- or a queen, for that matter -- can be played at the wrong time. How is that relevant to this deal? South is in three no-trump, and West leads the spade nine in answer to his partner’s overcall. What happens after that?

South starts with seven tricks: two spades, two hearts and three clubs.

He must set up his diamond suit.

But since that means losing the lead twice, the defenders have time on their side, if they use it wisely.

First, East, from his partner’s lead, knows that South has A-J-6 or A-J-6-4 of spades. When you are trying to establish a suit in which declarer has two winners, make him use up one of them as soon as possible -- and trick one is not too early.

East should overtake the spade nine with his 10 (or encourage with the eight). South wins with his jack, plays a heart to dummy’s king, and leads the diamond queen.

East must not cover an honor with an honor. He must play low and hope partner has the ace. Here, West wins the trick and returns his second spade. East can now set up his suit while he still has the diamond king as an entry. The defenders take three spades and two diamonds.

Note finally that if East plays the spade queen at trick one, South ducks and will make his contract.

When West is in with the diamond ace, he will not have a spade left to lead.
