POLL Why a Nazi ‘SS’ flag is on display YESTERDAY’S There is a Nazi SS flag flying on a pole outside a house along Route 23, north of McGirr Road between Waterman and DeKalb.

The SS was Hitler’s paramilitary group, the Schutzstaffel.

Disbanded after the war, the SS was considered a criminal organization whose members committed crimes against humanity, and was the organization most responsible for the murder of about 6 million Jews in the Holocaust.

The civilized world has been punishing SS members since World War II ended in 1945. It’s highest-ranking living member was hanged in 1946, and only last week, a 94-yearold former SS member named Reinhold Hanning was convicted in Germany of being complicit in 170,000 murders for time he spent as a prison guard at Auschwitz.

I went to the house in the 12000 block of Route 23 on Monday to see for myself. There it was, a black flag with the stylized “SS” in white, flapping lazily on a pole. Just as the Nazis used to fly.

It’s Mike O’Connor’s flag. Mike wasn’t home when I visited, but Tuesday morning, he left me a voicemail message, although he didn’t include a number where I could reach him.

“I’m in a motorcycle club, and that flag is always, all Nazi memorabilia has always been like a shock thing,” he said. “We are not ISIS, I’m not a white supremacist. it’s just a shock thing.”

able to fly a flag of what he believes in, which to anyone who asks, isn’t about Nazism.

The Anti-Defamation League considers the SS insignia a hate symbol, although it gives some credence to the symbol’s use in biker culture.

“Decades ago, some outlaw biker gangs appropriated several Nazi-related symbols, including the SS bolts, essentially as shock symbols or symbols of rebellion or nonconformity,” the league said on its website. “Thus SS bolts in the context of the outlaw biker subculture does not necessarily denote actual adherence to white supremacy.”

The ADL goes on to say that because many people in outlaw biker gangs are racists and white supremacists, sometimes the symbol is about that, too, so it’s hard to determine what it means when used in the motorcycle community.

The irony of it is that because so many millions of people fought and died to stop Hitler and his SS, O’Connor is now free to fly their flag.

Jury could rewrite history of Led Zeppelin’s epic ‘Stairway’

LOS ANGELES – A key chapter of rock ‘n’ roll history could be rewritten by a jury that began deliberating Wednesday over whether Led Zeppelin ripped off a riff for its epic “Stairway to Heaven.”

A lawyer representing the trust of a deceased songwriter criticized members of Led Zeppelin for “selective” memories and “convenient” truths in testifying about the origin of Jimmy Page’s acous-

tic guitar opening of the 1971 rock anthem.

“He didn’t tell you where he got the idea for the introduction,” attorney Francis Malofiy said in his closing argument in federal court in Los Angeles.

“It was a piece of music lifted from ‘Taurus’ by Randy California.”

Jurors deliberated for several hours Wednesday but did not reach a verdict. They’re scheduled to resume Thursday.

49 YEARS OF DEDICATION Sycamore crossing guard retires after serving District 427

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Alice Bennett has more than 300 kids – or she at least knows that many whom she considers her own.

As a young girl, Bennett made her way through the Sycamore school system. At 36, she began ushering others to and from their lessons – rain, sleet or snow. Now, at 85, her voice shakes with the somberness of knowing 49 years as a school crossing guard have come to an end.

After five decades serving Sycamore School District 427, Bennett will retire to Kansas with her grandson and daughter.

She does so with a heavy, heavy heart, but it also is brimming with fond memories.

Her recollections are filled with children in single-files and energetic huddles bustling to the same school her great-grandchildren, grandchildren, children and she attended years ago.

“It got me up in the morning and kept me going,” Bennett said. “I never was sick.”

Even as the weather turned from placid and warm to frigid and unpredictable, parents could count on the sight of “Miss Alice” herding groups of children from Locust Street to Southeast Elementary School.

Before Monday’s City Council meeting, Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault and Superintendent Kathy Countryman awarded Bennett with tokens of their gratitude for keeping the children of Sycamore safe for so many years.

“Alice is a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother of many,” Theriault said. “Her dedication to the children of Sycamore comes natural to her.”

Admittedly, the students have come to share a place in Bennett’s heart next to her own grandchildren, whose visits have become fewer and further between with time, she said. Bennett and her husband, Charles, had three kids of their own, 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Charles Bennett, who also was a crossing guard, died last year.

As each generation grew older and moved farther away, Bennett developed a close connection with the little ones who crossed her path each day.

“Some of them will come up and say, ‘Remember me? You crossed me,’ ” Bennett said. “It’s hard to remember them all.”

Her motorcycling days have allowed her to tour the U.S. and visit places such as Nova Scotia and other parts of Canada – twice.

“When we got married, we made a plan. We used to have a cabin on the Rock River – we built it,” she said. “We both had our own snowmobiles, but I rode with him on the bike. There’s a lot of different memories on that.”

More than just a crossing guard and avid motorcyclist, Bennett has been an active part of her community, volunteering as an election judge and pitching in with the Sycamore’s annual Pumpkin Festival.

“We’re really indebted to Alice because school crossing work by definition is, if you do it correctly, all weather, every school day, no matter what’s going on,” Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said.

“The temperature and the elements, they’re out there and she’s a strong, dedicated person, and those are her kids. I’m just glad that she was able to serve this

long.”

After receiving a medal and warm thank you from Sycamore Superintendent Countryman on Monday, there was plenty Bennett could have said, but all

she mustered were the few words of gratitude, spoken through tears.

“It makes me sad, because now I know it’s done,” she said. “And I will be back to see you.”

D-428 continues tech plan rollout

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb School District 428 will continue its technology initiative next school year, with more high school students getting Chromebooks and more teachers to receive training.

Curriculum leaders gave a yearend recap of the program at Tuesday’s board meeting.

Distribution and use of the Google-based laptops are part of a threeyear curriculum technology plan the District 428 started in the 2015-16 school year. This past school year was the first year that the computers were issued districtwide to third- through ninth-graders. For the 2016-17 academic year, high school sophomores, juniors and seniors are expected to be issued Chromebooks.

“Technology is that tool that is supporting teaching and learning in the classroom,” said Jennie Hueber, head of instruction and curriculum for District 428.

By the 2017-18 school year, when the initiative is expected to finish its rollout, students in kindergarten through second grade will be given devices, according to timeline data presented at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

been distributed among elementary school students. When the kindergarten and second-graders get them in the coming years, the district will have issued about 3,951 Chromebooks to its primary grade students, according to district data. Another 1,493 devices were issued to students attending the two middle schools, and next year the district expects to pass out 785 more with rolling out to the high-schoolers.

Among the uses for the portable computers, a Google product run ex-

clusively on that company’s operating system, students do classroom assignments and homework. They also use them for Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers testing and other assessments.

The expense of rolling out the Chromebooks to the additional grade levels next year will add to the nearly $2 million deficit in the district’s current $82.6 million budget, Gorla said.

That could mean $2.4 million more for District 428 and help with Chromebook costs. But school officials remain skeptical about whether that additional money will actually materialize.

Data officials shared at Tuesday’s board meeting shows that District 428 planned to spend $1.4 million on its technology initiative for the 2016 school year. For next year, $1.6 million is budgeted, and $2.2 million the next year.

DeKALB – A motorcyclist was taken to the hospital after a loose dog caused the driver to swerve and injure his leg.

Daniel L. Faivre, 65, of the 7800 block of South Malta Road, DeKalb, was driving on South Malta Road just east of Nelson Road in DeKalb when a dog ran in front of his 1994 Harley Davidson, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Faivre swerved to avoid hitting the dog and laid his motorcycle down, hurting his leg in the process.

The DeKalb Fire Department took Faivre to Kishwaukee Hospital. The dog’s owner was cited for allowing the pet to run at large, according to the release.

She enjoyed reading novels, but more than anything she cherished her grand and great-grandchildren.

Frances is survived by her children, William R Wright Jr. of DeKalb, Margaret (Gus) Lepez of Cortland, Jeffrey Wright of Chicago, and Gerri (Al) Herzer of Naples, FL; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Dave), Nichole, Christina, Meagan, Joseph, Justin, Jaryd, Alexandra, and Braden; her great-grandchildren, Michael, Alexis, Olivia, and Vivianna; and her siblings, John (Kathy) Mclemore, Frank Walsh, and Ronald Walsh.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William R. Wright Sr.; her brother, Fred; and her sisters, Pansy Ruth and Nanci.

County home prices up in May as sales fell DAILY CHRONICLE

news@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Homes prices in DeKalb County posted double-digit gains last month as the number of sales fell and inventory declined.

There were 107 existing homes sold in DeKalb County in May, down 6.1 percent from 114 closed sales in May 2015, according to figures released Wednesday by the Illinois Association of Realtors. Year-to-date, closed sales were down 3.3 percent to 416 through May, compared with 430 sales in the first five months of 2015.

The median sales price in the county increased 10.9 percent last month to $153,000, up from $138,000 in May 2015.

Through May, the median sales price in the county was $146,500, a 5.4 percent increase over the $139,000 median sales price during the first five months of 2015. Single-family home median sales prices rose 9.1 percent to $158,750; condo prices gained 3.4 percent to hit $122,500. The IAR report notes that activity for one month can look extreme because of small sample size.

The number of homes for sale in the county in May contracted 20.2 percent to 406, that’s down from 509 homes for sale in May 2015. With inventory more scarce, those homes on the market sold at a faster clip. The number of days on the market until a sale fell 23.8 percent to 61 days, that’s compared with 80 days in May 2015. Through May, the number of days on market in the county has fallen 19.6 percent to 74 days, down from 92 days in the first five months of 2015.

Statewide, 16,150 existing homes sold in May, an increase of 6 percent from 15,237 in May 2015, according to IAR. The statewide median price was $194,000 last month, a 7.2 percent gain from May 2015 when the median price was $181,000. The median is a typical

SYCAMORE – Relay for Life of DeKalb County will mark 20 years of celebrating cancer survivors, remembering those who lost their battle with the disease and raising money for the American Cancer Society on Saturday.

Over the past 20 years, the DeKalb County event has raised more than $1.6 million for the American Cancer Society. That number is expected to increase.

Twenty-five teams and 227 participants in this year’s event had raised $48,160.13 as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Relay For Life of DeKalb County will be from noon to midnight Saturday at Sycamore High School, 427 Spartan Trail, Sycamore.

“Inventories continue to be tight across the state as buyers scour the market for deals,” IAR President Mike Drews said in a statement. “The pronounced demand we have seen for more than a year appears to be setting this selling season up to be one where homes go quickly and for more money, which is a huge advantage for sellers.”

Nationally, Americans snapped up houses in May almost as soon as properties were listed, fueling the strongest sales rate in nearly a decade.

Sales of existing homes rose 1.8 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.53 million, the highest level since February 2007, the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday. People remain intent on buying homes, despite the low inventory of properties on the market that has caused prices to rise. The elevated demand likely stems from low mortgage rates and a relatively healthy jobs picture with unemployment at 4.7 percent, even with a recent hiring slowdown.

Activities will take place throughout the day, including a Mr. Relay event, Road to Recovery cardboard car races, music, games and food.

There will be a free ice cream social at 8 p.m. featuring Ollie’s Frozen Custard followed at dusk by the luminaria ceremony, where those who have lost their battle will be remembered.

The night will conclude with the commitment to continue to fight back at the closing ceremony at 11:30 p.m.

Ronald Bieberitz Jr., 24, formerly of the 6500 block of Cherry Valley Road, Kingston, pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

He was charged in 2014 with aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim younger than 9 years old, crim-

Bieberitz’s father, Ronald Bieberitz Sr. was sentenced to four years in prison in 2015 for molesting a boy younger than 13 at his Sycamore home.

He was being held at the DeKalb County Jail at the time of the accusation, for charges of unlawful association by a child sex offender after visiting parks and being present at an overnight event involving children.

just days later with aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse in connection with events that occurred in 2008 involving two sisters.

The eldest, Gerald Bieberitz, is serving a 10-year sentence for predatory criminal sexual abuse of a child, stemming from two incidents in DeKalb involving a girl younger than 13 in 1999, when Bieberitz was 60, court records show.

Bieberitz Jr. will be taken to Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet, where he will await assignment to a different prison.

Former Speaker Hastert enters prison

CHICAGO – Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert wheeled himself into a federal prison in Minnesota on Wednesday to serve his 15-month sentence in a hush-money case involving revelations that he sexually abused at least four boys while a high school wrestling coach in Illinois.

The 74-year-old Republican – one of the highest-ranking U.S. politicians to ever go to prison – arrived around noon at the facility in Rochester where he will be known as Inmate No. 47991-424.

Hastert, who began using a wheelchair after falling ill last year, wore a black shirt and camouflage pants as he wheeled himself into the complex between razor-wire fencing. The only person accompanying him was a woman, who followed him carrying crutches, a plastic bag and a small brown box.

Jolene Burdge, the sister of one Hastert victim, said in a phone interview later Wednesday that she never fully believed until Hastert went in that someone as powerful as he would end up behind bars for what he did.

When sentenced in April in Chicago, Hastert was branded “a serial child molester” by U.S. District Judge Thomas M.

MOLINE – Illinois transportation officials said a Chicago-to-Moline passenger rail project has been resurrected.

The Illinois Department of Transportation told the Federal Railroad Administration that it’s proceeding with the proposal, The (Moline) Dispatch reported.

Under Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration, the state awarded about $45 million for the project, which originally was expected to be running by 2012. But Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner placed the project under review after taking office.

Illinois was at risk of losing $177 million in federal funding that was set to expire June 30.

Champaign council OKs 8 security cameras for U of I

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois is adding to its already large network of hundreds of security cameras.

The Champaign City Council voted Tuesday night to allow the university to install eight more cameras at two busy intersections near campus. The cameras will go up at Sixth and John streets and Fourth and Green streets in the next six months to a year.

The school already has more than 1,440 security cameras and The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported that number will grow by 200 this year.

Illinois couple convicted of kidnapping child sentenced

SPRINGFIELD – An Illinois couple has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for kidnapping and transporting a minor across state lines with intent to engage in sexual activity.

Thirty-seven-year-old Nicole and 46-year-old Calvin Eason were sentenced Tuesday by Chief U.S. District Judge James E. Shadid, who also ordered each to serve a lifetime term of supervised release. In December, a federal jury in Peoria found Nicole Eason of Danville guilty of the charges. Calvin Eason of Westville pleaded guilty in November.

Prosecutors alleged the Easons participated in an online discussion board with adoptive parents seeking new homes for children they no longer wanted or couldn’t care for. The Easons allegedly convinced one couple to bring a child to Illinois who was abused. Prosecutors say the Easons kidnapped a second child in 2008.

NEW YORK – Donald Trump launched a blistering attack Wednesday on Hillary Clinton’s record and character, slamming his presidential rival as a “world class liar” who raked in personal profits from her tenure at the State Department. The billionaire businessman claimed, “She gets rich making you poor.”

Trump’s broadside marked his opening salvo in a general election faceoff with Clinton that has already turned bruising and deeply personal. The presumptive Republican nominee called Clinton the “most corrupt” person to ever run for president and accused of her of spreading “death, destruction and terrorism” while serving as the nation’s top diplomat.

Clinton, campaigning in North Carolina, called Trump’s charges “outlandish lies.”

“He’s going after me personally because he has no answers on the substance,” Clinton said. “All he can try to do is try to distract us.”

Trump’s tone was pointed yet measured as he ticked through several of Republicans’ favorite critiques of Clinton, including her use of private email as secretary of state and her role in responding to the attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya. Several of his claims were inaccurate or exaggerated, including incorrectly saying she wants to spend hundreds of billions to resettle Middle Eastern refugees in the U.S. Wednesday’s address came at a pivotal moment for Trump’s presidential campaign.

Earlier this week, Trump abruptly fired his campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, a move widely viewed as an acknowledgment of a need to recalibrate his organization. A new fundraising report released hours after Lewandowski’s firing underscored how much ground Trump has to make up: He started June with just $1.3 million in the bank, a stunningly paltry amount for a major party nominee.

Even as Trump blasted Clinton, he returned to some of the core themes that first powered his surprising presidential campaign. He railed against professional politicians and urged Americans to seize an opportunity to shake up a “rigged” system.

While he assailed Hillary Clinton in personal terms, Trump did not make any mention of former President Bill Clinton’s indiscretions, despite raising those issues earlier in the campaign.

The real estate mogul did make a direct appeal to supporters of Clinton’s primary rival Bernie Sanders, reminding voters that the Vermont senator, too, has raised questions about her judgment. Like Trump, Sanders also generated enormous enthusiasm among voters frustrated with Washington.

British politicians make final Brexit appeals The ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON – With Britain’s membership in the European Union on the line, campaigners from the prime minister on down blanketed the country Wednesday trying to convert the undecided on the final day before the crucial vote.

Outlining his vision of a future with Britain retaining its position in the 28-nation bloc, Prime Minister David Cameron bristled at the notion that the country would be headed in the wrong direction if the “remain” David side prevailed in ThursCameron day’s vote.

“We are not shackled to a corpse,” Cameron told the BBC. “You can see the European economy’s recovery. It’s the largest single market in the world.”

Trustees project tiny increase in Social Security benefits next year The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Millions of Social Security beneficiaries would get a tiny increase in monthly payments next year – less than $2.50, about enough to buy a gallon of gas.

Meanwhile, Medicare is expected to go bankrupt sooner than expected – 12 years from now. And some beneficiaries could face higher monthly premiums next year.

The annual report from the trustees of the government’s two bedrock retirement programs warned that politically gridlocked Washington needs to act sooner, rather than later, to shore up finances and avoid upending the lives of millions of retirees and their families.

Social Security’s trust funds are expected to be depleted in 2034, unchanged from the trustees’ projection a year ago. Medicare’s trust fund for inpatient care will be exhausted in 2028, two years earlier than previously projected.

If Congress allows either fund to

run dry, millions of Americans living on fixed incomes would face steep cuts in benefits.

“Lawmakers should address these financial challenges as soon as possible,” said the trustees’ report. “Taking action sooner rather than later will permit consideration of a broader range of solutions and provide more time to phase in changes so that the public has adequate time to prepare.”

The projected 0.2 percent increase in Social Security payments would come a year after beneficiaries received no increase. By law, increases are based on a government measure of inflation, which has been low. The official 2017 cost-of-living adjustment won’t be determined until the fall.

Advocates complained that the government’s measure of inflation – the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers – doesn’t adequately reflect the prices that older Americans pay.

“Seniors continue to see their modest Social Security benefits eaten away by growing health care costs,”

said Max Richtman, who heads the National Committee to Protect Social Security and Medicare.

More than 60 million retirees, disabled workers, spouses and surviving children receive Social Security benefits. The average monthly payment is about $1,232.

After Social Security’s trust funds are depleted, the program would collect enough in payroll taxes to pay only 79 percent of benefits.

Medicare’s problem is more immediate, and more complicated, because health care costs can change in unpredictable ways.

Medicare provides health insurance for more than 55 million people, including seniors and disabled people. After its inpatient care trust fund runs dry in 2028, Medicare would only be able to pay 87 percent of projected costs.

Medicare’s insolvency date has moved closer despite a recent stretch of slow growth in health care costs, with notable exceptions like prescription drugs.

BRIEF South Pole rescue flight of 2 sick workers arrives in Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile – A small plane with two sick U.S. workers arrived safely in Chile late Wednesday after leaving Antarctica in a daring rescue mission from a remote South Pole research station, officials said.

After making a stop for a few hours at a British station on the edge of Antarctica, the two workers were flown to the southernmost Chilean city of Punta Arenas, the National Science Foundation said in a statement published on its Facebook page.

In a hectic two days of flying, the rescue team flew 3,000 miles roundtrip from the British station Rothera to pick up the workers at the U.S. Amundsen-Scott station at the South Pole. They arrived back at Rothera on Wednesday afternoon, said Peter West, spokesman for the National Science Foundation, which runs the U.S. station. Then the two workers boarded a second Canadian-owned Twin Otter plane that took off for Punta Arenas.

At Rothera, the temperature was a balmy 27.5 degrees Wednesday afternoon. That’s toasty compared to the Amundsen-Scott research station at the South Pole where it was minus 75 in the morning.

Will senators face hard truth about pensions?

Any politician can make a career promising tax cuts, pay increases or other goodies – and many do.

It takes leadership, however, to address realistically situations with no pleasing solutions.

Just such a situation is presented by the large and growing funding shortfalls of multi-employer pension funds covering more than 10 million truckers, grocery store employees and other blue-collar workers, active and retired.

This red-ink tsunami threatens to swamp the agency responsible for backstopping the plans, the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp.

(PBGC).

Believe it or not, responsible leadership did emerge two years ago, in the form of Reps. John Kline, R-Minnesota, and George Miller, D-California, who pushed through bipartisan legislation that would preserve benefits for everyone over the long-term by enabling pension plans to trim benefits for some over the short-term.

Alas, this law is being undermined before it has had a chance to work. Last year, the Central States Pension Fund, which supports retired Teamsters, asked the Treasury Department to approve a Kline-Miller solvency plan that would have reduced payments by an average of 28 percent for about 115,000 current retirees.

The alternative, Central States argued, was bankruptcy within a decade.

But last month a special master designated by Treasury rejected the plan, asserting that it didn’t really assure long-term solvency because its assumptions about future returns on investments were too rosy.

The remedy to that, of course, would be to propose even greater benefit cuts, something Central States has said it cannot conscientiously do. And so the financial death spiral continues.

Critics of Treasury’s decision smelled an election-year evasion; an unsurprising hunch given the fact that 46 senators, mostly Democrats, signed a letter in April urging rejection of the Central States plan, and that Democratic presidential insurgent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont has been campaigning on a proposal to bail out the multi-employer pensions with federal funds. Miller, now retired from Congress, told Politico the Treasury ruling “was a calculated response to sort of stop the discussion in this political year.”

Treasury insists that is untrue; we take the department at its word.

Still, if Central States said it has no alternative to a proposal Treasury says isn’t adequate, exactly what is supposed to happen next?

If Central States collapses and the PBGC takes over, retirees would, by law, get even less than they would under the just-rejected proposal.

And if the PBGC itself is insolvent – an alarmingly real possibility – retirees might get almost nothing.

Sanders, characteristically, advocates federal rescue, without explaining why this is more feasible politically than it was in 2010, when a Democratic Congress declined to act on a similar proposal.

Nor is it clear why defined-benefit pensioners should have a higher claim on taxpayer resources than the many people who do not have such pensions – and, indeed, often make less money than union members.

Not for a minute do we underestimate the plight of pensioners facing a major financial hit that they were told, long ago, they would never have to face.

What we do dispute is that there’s a cost-free way out of their predicament. The sooner politicians level with them about that, the better.

“Recently, the United States was faced with a horrendous hate crime committed in Orlando, Florida. The victims of this mass shooting were in a nightclub that they felt was a safe space where they could be themselves.

“Traditionally, tragedies like this one are observed by moments of silence, and I have done this in the past as well, however, the LGBTQA community has experienced violence for generations and I do not feel as elected officials we can remain silent any longer.

This is a community where you should feel welcome and safe.

To the Editor: Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, must have trouble suppressing a grin when he passes a graveyard.

Thousands and thousands of senseless gun deaths during his reign at the NRA and still legislators are so terrified of the supposed power of that organization that their knees began knocking at the very suggestion of gun control.

No, I don’t really think that LaPierre had to suppress a grin. I think that he is laughing out loud right now, as he rinses off the blood from the latest massacre.

Republicans should worry about losing the House Republicans need to start worrying about losing their majority in the House of Representatives.

Republicans accept the conventional wisdom that Hillary Clinton is favored to win the presidency, and they know that her election would probably end their majority in the Senate.

But in a year that has upended political expectations, they have clung to one comforting assumption: Their hold on the House is secure.

Their majority is protected by gerrymandering, the geographic distribution of Republican voters, the power of incumbency and its own sheer size. Republicans have 247 seats in the House, the most since 1931.

Democrats would have to win 30 to take back the chamber.

And that includes many seats in districts that usually go Republican in presidential contests.

That sets the House apart from the Senate, where to keep their majority Republicans will have to hold seats in states that usually vote for Democratic presidential candidates.

But Clinton’s lead in the polls is widening to the point that Republicans need to set aside their

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru complacency. Split-ticket voting has declined over the last generation. If Clinton wins big – because Republican voters stay home, or swing voters choose her party, or both – House Republicans will struggle to win re-election.

Henry Olsen, the co-author of a recent book about the Republican party, tells me that an eight-point win would put Republicans in the danger zone.

Now it may be that the decline of split-ticket voting is another pattern this year will disrupt.

Maybe voters will distinguish between Donald Trump and other Republicans, rejecting him but not them. Maybe Republican voters will come to the polls to vote for a third-party presidential candidate, such as Libertarian Gary Johnson, and then vote for Republican congressmen while they are there.

Public polling on the congressional races is still sparse.

The most recent numbers come

from Ipsos/Reuters, which found the Democrats with an 11-point lead nationally. That could be a sign that Trump is pulling Republican congressional candidates down with him.

Republicans should also consider that their optimistic take on the House sounds a lot like what they said in 2005 and 2006 as their political fortunes declined during President George W. Bush’s second term.

Then, too, the district lines and voters’ preference for incumbents were supposed to keep Republicans in control of Congress.

In late May of 2006, the respected political analyst Stu Rothenberg projected that Democrats were likely to gain 8 to 12 seats, leaving Republicans in charge of the House.

They ended up winning 31 seats, picking up the House and further surpassing expectations by taking control of the Senate, too.

That history is not repeating line for line.

A decade ago the Democrats were very successful in getting qualified candidates who were good fits for their districts. Recruitment does not seem to have gone as well this year.

If the presidential race goes well

enough for the Democrats, though, it might not matter. “If worse comes to worst, I think the House is more at risk than people realize,” says one prominent Republican strategist who requested anonymity so that he could offer a candid assessment.

He says that if Trump looks like a sure loser, congressional Republican candidates should do what they did in 1996, when their presidential nominee Bob Dole seemed doomed to defeat: Present themselves as necessary checks on a Democratic president named Clinton.

House Republicans are more likely to retain their majority than Trump is to win, and for that matter a Trump victory can’t be ruled out.

But Republicans should not kid themselves about the worsening political environment.

A year ago they thought that they could begin 2017 with control of the White House, Senate and House.

Now they have a real prospect of being shut out of national power altogether.

Beware the zealots taking aim at regulating soft drinks Just a few weeks ago legislators in Springfield briefly raised the idea of levying a new tax on soft drinks.

The controversial proposal – one that would increase the cost of sugary drinks by roughly 40 percent – apparently was too hot to handle, and it was suddenly dropped from discussions.

But the curious coalition of money-hungry legislators and moral arbiters who like to dictate other people’s choices was merely down, not out.

It came back to life in Philadelphia last week when the City Council approved a special levy of 1.5 cents per ounce on sweetened beverages. That’s an extra 18 cents per 12-ounce can, $1.08 per six-pack.

The new tax will reportedly apply to “regular sodas, diet sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks and other nonalcoholic beverages with sweeteners,” according to news reports.

The move in Philadelphia follows similar action in Berkeley, California, Meanwhile, the California cities of Oakland and San Francisco as well as Boulder, Colorado, are

considering following suit.

Then, of course, there is Illinois, where Chicago Democratic state Sen. Donne Trotter argued his “soda tax” proposal is “no different than how we look at the detrimental effects on cigarettes.”

Really? There’s no difference between a Coke and a Camel?

That kind of analogy shows just how bold the moral Puritans have become and how desperate our legislators are.

Two issues drive this debate – revenue and health.

Opponents of the Philadelphia soda tax object for a variety of reasons, one of which is that consumers will merely purchase their soft drinks outside the city. The net result, they argue, is that consumers still will purchase Coke or Pepsi, but not in Philadelphia. Thus, they argue that the legislation is hurting local businesses and costing the municipality revenue it otherwise would have received.

That’s a reasonable claim. It stands to reason that soft-drink consumers, just as do smokers,

will make it a point to buy where taxes are lowest. But Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kennedy rejects that claim, arguing that consumers may initially – acting “out of anger” – go elsewhere but not for long.

“Out of convenience, they’ll go back to shopping at their corner stores,” he said.

Just as have ever-higher taxes on cigarettes, proponents of the soda tax see the measure as a means of increasing revenue. If smokers in Illinois suddenly quit buying cigarettes, the state legislators who insisted they raised tobacco taxes to discourage sales would go into collective shock over declining revenues.

The second issue is health – soft drink foes have decided the beverage industry is responsible for obesity, and they want to damage or destroy it through taxation.

Soft drinks surely play a role in that undeniable problem. But how large?

What about the ground beef that goes in the hamburgers people love?

How about the buffets that restau-

rants offer their customers? What about mashed potatoes and gravy, roast turkey and cranberry relish served at Thanksgiving and Christmas?

Is society going to limit portion size through legislation? Or regulate consumption of burgers and fries through World War II-style rationing?

So far, smokers have proved an easy target for taxes and restrictions. Most people have been educated about the health risks, the consequence being that only a relatively small percentage of the population still smoke. But many, many millions of people enjoy soft drinks, and they’re not likely to take this tax grab lying down.

The soft-drink industry is challenging the Philadelphia decision in court. Meanwhile, a broad coalition, including both business and labor, is fighting a similar battle in the court of public opinion.

These battles are harbingers of more to come, including here in Illinois.

It’s Jimmy Butler’s team now.

Gar Forman hesitated to call it that, but the general manager couldn’t hide from the obvious Wednesday, after the Bulls announced they had traded Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks in a five-player deal.

That meant Rose’s long-standing health concerns are no longer a Bulls problem. His camp’s inability to con-

sistently have civil conversations with his hometown organization?

His brother/manager, Reggie, spouting off? Rose’s questioned work ethic

by Butler and others?

All of it, sent packing in a deal with the New York Knicks that now has Rose in the “Big Apple,’’ along with Justin Holiday and a 2017 second round pick.

In return, New York will send big man Robin Lopez, as well as guards Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant to the Bulls, as the retooling of a roster

that will fit Fred Hoiberg’s offense has started.

“Knowing Derrick as I do makes this trade a hard one,’’ Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. “Everyone knows him as the local kid who became MVP for his hometown team, but not everyone got to know him like I did. While he is a terrific basketball player, he is an even better person with a tremendous heart.

“I wish him the best of health for the remainder of his career, and I

want to personally thank him for everything that he did on the court and in the community during his time with the Chicago Bulls.’’

Forman reiterated that sentiment.

“It’s always difficult when you’re going to trade somebody like Derrick Rose,’’ Forman said in a news conference at the Advocate Center.

A day that had to come for Bulls, Rose

The choice was either Jimmy Butler or Derrick Rose, so, really, there was no choice. You choose the arrow pointing up over the broken arrow.

The Bulls traded Rose to the Knicks on Wednesday, and it was a move they had to make, provided there was a taker. It doesn’t really matter whom they got in return, although Robin Lopez, Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant now find themselves former Knicks and current Bulls.

This isn’t a fun day. No matter how much Rose might have disap-

He and Butler could not play together. It wasn’t so much a personality conflict as it was simply two men who didn’t know how to coexist on the court. What the Bulls were left

with was a clunky offense that had all the flow of a faucet drip. It didn’t shine a positive light on either player, and Butler will have some image repair to do.

The Bulls were lucky to find someone to take Rose off their hands, and it looks like an odd fit.

The image of him playing in Phil Jackson’s triangle offense is one of a kid getting hopelessly lost in a maze.

I feel bad for Rose, the kid from Englewood and Simeon who had everything going for him until he tore his left anterior cruciate ligament in a 2012 playoff game. He never got back to his previous form, struggling with more injuries and turn-

ing public opinion away from him with comments that made it appear he put himself before the team.

He clearly thinks he’ll be in line for another huge contract when his current deal expires after the 2016-17 season. The Bulls weren’t going to pay him, and they didn’t want to listen more public discussion of it for another season.

I wish Rose success, and if he happens to find it with the Knicks, I won’t criticize the Bulls for trading him. It was a move they had to make.

Not that the Rose trade should come as a shock, especially considering the league’s one-time youngest MVP was entering free agency, but the thought was the Bulls would be better suited to get the most out of him to start off the season, and then entertain trade ideas at the deadline.

Privately, the Bulls were getting the sense that Rose would want a max deal coming off a 2016-17 season in which he was scheduled to make $21.3 million, and rather than have to deal with the headache of negotiating or the public relations hit they might take, the decision was obviously made to move on now.

Forman called it a “basketball decision’’ rather than a financial decision, but reiterated that the cost uncertainty of free agency over the next few seasons because of a rising salary cap was a factor.

Lopez is signed through the 2018-19 season, while Grant was a player the Bulls were looking to draft last year.

Calderon is signed through next season, so will come off the books quickly.

“Our cap position is going to be basically the same, and we continue to move forward,’’ Forman said. “We think it’s really a good first step.’’

Tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the first-round playoff loss to Philadelphia, Rose sat out the entire 2012-13 season, and when he did return lasted only 10 games because of a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Since those injuries, Rose’s game was never the same, with his healthiest season coming this year, as he averaged 16.4 points and played in 66 games.

The bigger picture was Rose didn’t fit in what Hoiberg wanted to do. First, Hoiberg’s offense doesn’t need two isolation players in it. With Butler surpassing Rose on the talent front, as

well as being younger, one had to go.

Secondly, Hoiberg admittedly had to do a lot of extra hand holding with Rose, getting him to mentally understand what was being asked of him both offensively and defensively.

With Hoiberg and Butler both signing five-year deals last season, staying power wasn’t favoring the 2008-09 Rookie of the Year.

“The decision really was what I said,’’ Forman said, when asked if the clash of egos between Butler and Rose played a factor. “We felt that we needed to start changing the roster. We felt we needed to start getting younger and more athletic. It was more from a team building standpoint in trying to get

this process started.’’

With Rose now out the door, it was further evidence of the break-up between free agent-to-be Joakim Noah and the Bulls also underway.

As the Sun-Times reported last month, Noah already had set his mind on going elsewhere because of a mistrust in the front office, specifically Forman. The Rose trade does very little to change that, especially with how tight Noah and Rose were.

“This is all our team,’’ Forman said.

“Basketball is a team game. Obviously Jimmy being an All-Star is our best player, but I don’t know if you can go as far as saying it’s this guy’s team or this guy’s team.’’

Rizzo left the game Wednesday in the seventh inning after his back tightened, although he said he was well enough to play through it if the game had been closer. He missed a game two weeks ago with the same issue.

Manager Joe Maddon called Rizzo’s status day-to-day and said he might sit Rizzo on Thursday, especially with a left-hander (Wei-Yin Chen) scheduled to start for the Marlins.

Maddon suggested Rizzo’s back might have played a role in him being unable to pick a low throw out of the dirt on a potential double play that would have ended the fifth inning. Instead, the first two runs of the game scored.

Rizzo downplayed the discomfort, saying, “I just missed it.”

The Cubs already have five players from their active Opening Day roster on the disabled list, including center fielder Dexter Fowler.

It looked as if Montero was headed there again when he heard a pop in his right knee while making an awkward tag in the sixth, then limped off the field.

“I got a little scared,” said Montero, who had surgery on the knee in 2010 to clean out a torn meniscus.

But he said the knee loosened significantly by the time he reached the clubhouse after leaving the game.

Maddon considers him ready for the Marlins series.

Star power: The entire Cubs infield and Fowler maintained their top spots in National League All-Star fan voting with barely a week left until online polling closes.

If the update holds, the Cubs would become the first team since the 1963 Cardinals to put its entire infield in the starting lineup for an All-Star Game.

“I’m happy for our guys, man,” Maddon said. “It’s great for the organization. It’s great for the players.

It will elevate their game. I believe that.”

The Cubs could have five pitchers also considered for selection.

Maddon suggested at least ace Jake Arrieta (11-2, 1.74 ERA) and No. 2 starter Jon Lester (9-3, 2.06) merit selection.

Anybody who thought the Cardinals were going to fold under the weight of that near-historic 12½-game lead the Cubs piled on top of them heading into the week got a sudden, three-game reminder of just how long the road to October is – and just how long the Cardinals have been driving it.

A pair of one-run games followed by Wednesday’s 7-2 beat-down gave the second-place Cardinals a rare three-game sweep at Wrigley Field and put the Cubs’ Michigan Avenue parade plans on hold – at least until their next winning streak.

“I think we’re trending upward,” Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch after his two-run double helped finish off the sweep Wednesday.

And that’s the bigger deal for the Cubs than their second three-game losing streak of the year, or a division lead in June that regresses back to single digits.

“That’s big [for the Cardinals],” said Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, whose team is playing as the pace-setter for the first time in a career he had

“We’re in a good spot, but we’re going to take our lumps early in the season,” Arrieta said. “I think we lost several [three] in a row in May, and the mindset stayed the same. So I don’t see this being any different.”

The Cubs lost three straight and six of eight last month. They followed that by winning six straight and 10 of 11.

“Nothing you can do about it. It’s over, and you move on,” catcher Miguel Montero said of the sweep. “Hopefully, that’s the last time that happens.”

Frazier hits 21st homer in victory over Boston

BOSTON – Todd Frazier and Brett Lawrie took a walk to the top of the Green Monster on Wednesday afternoon.

Then they poked a couple of shots over it Wednesday night.

Frazier’s blast, his 21st homer of the season and second in two nights, was a game-tying shot in the sixth inning against Eduardo Rodriguez, and Lawrie’s was a go-ahead homer in the eighth against Koji Uehara in a 8-6 victory at Fenway Park – the Soxs’ third in a row.

Lawrie’s homer followed Melky Cabrera’s tying two-run shot to right field. Cabrera, who doubled in the Sox’ first run, added an RBI single in the ninth for their last one.

And so it went in a wild and whacky victory for the Sox (36-36), who finally scored some runs (four) for support-starved Jose Quintana, only to see Quintana walk a career-high six and endure his worst start of the season.

With closer David Robertson and eight-inning specialist Nate Jones resting after each pitching on three consecutive nights, manager Robin Ventura turned to right-hander Michael Ynoa to protect the 7-6 lead in the eighth. Ynoa struck out Dustin Pedroia and Chris

Young in the inning, but not before surviving near-miss homers by Xander Bogaerts and Young. A fan in the first row above the Monster touched Bogaerts’ blast; a review in New York could not determine that it was touched in home run territory, so it stood as a double.

Ventura then visited Ynoa on the mound and called for an intentional

walk of David Ortiz, putting the potential go-ahead run on first, and Ynoa struck out Young, but not before Young barely missed the top of the left-field foul pole.

After winning the first two games of the series behind strong starts from Miguel Gonzalez and Chris Sale, the Sox looked to be in a good position to win a third straight game for the first time

in early May with Quintana (2.63 ERA going in) matched against Boston lefty Rodriguez (6.97).

Things were clicking for the Sox, aiming to reset themselves at the .500 mark.

But then Quintana gave up four runs on a walk and five singles in the bottom of the third, hurt in part by second baseman Lawrie’s behind-the-back attempted flip to shortstop Tim Anderson for a forceout that was well off the mark. It appeared as though Lawrie had enough time for a conventional flip, albeit from the ground after making a diving stop.

Quintana did manage to click off two scoreless innings after that, but after Frazier belted his 21st homer – the most ever by a Sox third baseman during the first half – and second of the series, Hanley Ramirez homered into the Red Sox bullpen in right-center field to put the Red Sox back in front.

Quintana’s line was none too pretty: 5 1⁄3 innings, six runs, eight his, six walks, one strikeout.

“Games are crazy – you got games where you’re winning by a lot or losing by a lot and you can still stay in that game and end up winning it,’’ Ventura said before the game. “Something happens, that’s the biggest thing. Continue to play hard, continue to grind it out and you don’t know where you end up. ‘’

Hard work paying off for Miguel Gonzalez as velocity gets back up

BOSTON – Miguel Gonzalez isn’t the same pitcher as the one released by the Baltimore Orioles in March. His velocity, which dropped in September and carried into spring training, has regained those couple of mph and is back to its customary 92 (per BrooksBaseball).

“I try not to look at the board when I’m pitching, but it’s definitely going up now, and it’s more consistent than what I saw at the end of last year,’’ the 32-year-old right-hander said Wednesday. “I’m pretty excited about that.’’

Gonzalez has allowed three or fewer runs in eight of his 10 starts for the Sox, including one run over 6 2⁄ 3 innings in a 3-1 Sox win Monday against the Red Sox, one of the better hitting teams in baseball.

“Working hard pays off,’’ he said.

“At the end of last year, I had a program going, and the program here with the White Sox on the day after you pitch is pretty intense. It’s definitely helping out. I’m also throwing more long toss than I have in past.’’

As pitchers often do upon joining the Sox, Gonzalez added a cutter to his mix and seems to be phasing out his slider.

Having regained his velocity “makes a big difference, especially for a pitcher like me,’’ he said. “I have to paint [corners], I have to pound the zone early. Every pitch you throw is a different pitch and to a different spot.

Pitching is an art. And it’s fun.’’

While the Orioles – for whom Gonzalez pitched to a 3.49 ERA from 2012-14 before he slid to 4.91 in 2015 – might now be regretting letting him go, Gonzalez is staying classy about their decision, which was difficult to take at the time.

“I wouldn’t call it a mistake,’’ he said. “They gave me the opportunity to play in the big leagues.’’

The Sox claimed right-hander Juan Minaya off waivers from the Houston Astros and assigned him to AAA Charlotte.

Minaya, 25, was 1-3 with a 3.91 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 17 relief appearances and 251⁄3 innings with AAA Fresno this season before being designated for assignment on June 20. He possesses a 95-mph fastball but has lacked consistent strike-throwing command.

Minaya was added to Houston’s 40man roster on November 20, 2015 after combining to go 1-0 with a 2.80 ERA and 59 strikeouts over 35 relief appearances last season between AA Corpus Christi and Fresno.

players that had great careers. It’s pretty amazing to say that [there are] some American records you hold now, whether it’s the MVP, scoring title, point streak. It’s pretty exciting.”

Kane set career highs this season with 46 goals and 60 assists. But he didn’t do it alone. He deferred plenty of credit to linemate Artemi Panarin, who won the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie. The Russian burst on to the NHL scene this season with a 30-goal,

77-point performance, proving to be a flashy, creative and highly skilled scorer who had instant chemistry with Kane. Panarin is the first Hawks player to win the award since Kane did so in 2008. Panarin even gave his speech in English, thanking his family, friends and teammates.

But when asked if he came to the NHL expected to play at such a high level right away, Panarin wanted to look forward, not back.

LAS VEGAS – Patrick Kane’s 2015-16 season will go down in history. American history, at least.

After breaking the American record with a 26-game point streak during the season, then becoming the first American to win the Art Ross Trophy as the scoring champion, Kane on Wednesday night became the first U.S.-born player to win the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player.

He also picked up the Ted Lindsay Award, which is given to the league’s most outstanding player as voted on by the players. Kane already had established himself as one of the greatest American players of all time. Now he has the hardware to prove it.

“I definitely feel very fortunate,” Kane said, nine years to the day the Hawks drafted him first overall. “It’s amazing to me that there’s no American that’s ever won the scoring title or the MVP award because there’s been so many great American players. You can go up and down the list of names – guys like [Chris] Chelios, Brian Leetch, Mike Modano, Joe Mullen, Jeremy Roenick,

Kane echoed that sentiment, repeating his usual mantra that while he’s happy with his play, he’s not satisfied. And despite winning the Hart, Ross and Lindsay trophies, Kane still walked away without the trophy he most wants. That one went to Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby, who finished second in the Hart voting.

“It was a fun night; it’s fun to have this recognition,” Kane said. “But I think all of us that have won individually tonight will trade it in for the biggest team award – winning the Stanley Cup. We know how precious and fun that is to win.”

In other major awards, Los Angeles’ Drew Doughty and Anze Kopitar won the Norris Trophy (defenseman) and Selke Trophy (defensive forward) awards, respectively, and Washington’s Braden Holtby won the Vezina Trophy (goaltender). Washington’s Barry Trotz won the Jack Adams as coach of the year.

NOTE: The Hawks re-signed center Dennis Rasmussen to a one-year, oneway contract worth $575,000. Up against the salary cap, the Hawks need several capable-but-affordable players such as Rasmussen – who had four goals and five assists in 44 games as a fourth-line center – to flesh out the roster.

NHL coming to Las Vegas; new team to start play in 2017

LAS VEGAS – The NHL is making a big bet on Las Vegas.

The league will expand to Las Vegas for the 2017-18 season after awarding its 31st franchise to billionaire businessman Bill Foley on Wednesday. Commissioner Gary Bettman announced the decision after the league’s board of governors met on a 109-degree day and unanimously voted to put an ice hockey team in the Mojave Desert’s gambling mecca.

“We think this is a tremendously exciting opportunity, not just for Las Vegas, but for the league as well,” Bettman said, calling Las Vegas “a vibrant, growing, global destination city.”

Foley will pay $500 million to the NHL’s other owners as an expansion fee. The new team will play in T-Mobile Arena, the $375 million building that opened just off the Las Vegas Strip in April.

The NHL is expanding for the first time since 2000, when Minnesota and Columbus each paid $80 million to join the league.

The NHL is also confident in the ownership group led by Foley, a financial services tycoon who mounted a strong bid for ownership along with minority partners Joe and Gavin Maloof, the former owners of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.

Foley’s bid had the enormous advantage of an NHL-ready arena built with private funding and eager for a flagship tenant. Foley already has accepted more than 14,000 season ticket deposits and sold out all 44 suites in the 17,500-seat rink built by MGM Resorts International and Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the Los Angeles Kings.

“We won’t sell out every game with season ticket holders, but I believe it’s going to be 85 percent, 90 percent (filled by season ticket holders),” Foley said.

The new franchise will be stocked by an expansion draft that will be more favorable than previous drafts, theoretically allowing the Vegas franchise to become competitive more quickly. They’ll play in the Pacific Division, the home of the league’s three California teams and the Arizona Coyotes.

Simmons hopes to be No. 1 NBA draft pick

NEW YORK – Ben Simmons has the sneaker deal and the TV show, so off the court he already has the look of a star.

The only questions seem to be about what he can do on the floor.

Assuming the Philadelphia 76ers are satisfied, they will make Simmons the No. 1 pick Thursday night in the NBA draft.

He has been considered the choice for months, and there are plenty of reasons why. The 6-foot-10 forward’s versatility is perfect for the modern NBA, and he has been getting advice about how to make himself even better from his favorite player, a certain champion named LeBron James.

Yet after an up-and-down season at LSU, Simmons arrived in New York on Wednesday with more scrutiny than usual for a player whose named is expected to be called first by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

“It was a roller coaster, but I think everything that I went through has helped mold me into the player that I am now,” Simmons said. “But I think I’m ready.”

He averaged 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists, the only SEC player ever to finish in the top five in all three categories. But the Tigers were only 19-14, failing to make the NCAA Tournament, and with all his talent Simmons sometimes left the impressive that he could’ve – maybe should’ve – done more to lead his team.

“That’s always going to happen when you’re one of the best guys. They try to bring you down, but honestly it was a rough season,” Simmons said. “We had guys that were hurt, were out, but it wasn’t the perfect season that we wanted.”

If critics want to put the blame on Simmons, LSU coach Johnny Jones thinks they’re looking in the wrong place.

Simmons insists he doesn’t actually know if he will go first, but Madison Avenue seems convinced. Simmons has already inked a sneaker deal with Nike and will be the feature of a Showtime documentary film called “ONE & DONE” that will debut in October, just before Simmons debuts in the NBA. That could be in the uniform of the 76ers, who went 10-72 in their third straight dismal season. Simmons didn’t work out for Philadelphia until Tuesday but there was familiarity with him long ago, as 76ers coach Brett Brown coached Simmons’ father in Australia. Simmons said Brown told him that someday he might play in the NBA. And Simmons said he would be happy doing it for Brown, even though his delay in meeting with the 76ers created speculation that he hoped to scare Philadelphia from taking him so he would fall to second and get to play in Los Angeles for the Lakers. But Simmons said that was never true.

“Definitely not, just because I want to be the best player,” he said. “There’s only one No. 1 pick of the year.”

Summer TV 2016 Premiere dates for new dramas, comedies, reality shows and more

ummer is here, but, frankly, the TV premieres look a little too scrawny in their bikinis and Speedos – especially compared with recent summers.

Is it because the Olympics are coming in August?

Would it have anything to do with wall-to-wall Republican and Democratic convention coverage headed our way in July?

There’s a lot on (there’s always a lot on), but I still don’t see that deluxe, highly anticipated new drama series to fill out our Sunday nights.

Nor am I sensing much in the way of a can’t-miss comedy. Even the reality shows seem to be resigned to the fact that our political season has been more ridiculous than anything they could cook up. Notice how ABC has resorted to resuscitating 1970s game shows all summer. (New versions of “The $100,000 Pyramid” and “Match Game” – just what we didn’t need.)

But what’s your alternative? Get up and go outside? Perish the thought! To keep you couch-bound, I present this curated list of summer premieres for new dramas, comedies, specials, reality shows and documentaries. My recommendations are noted. Sit tight and dream of fall.

DAILY CHRONICLE It’s time to sign up for Indian Valley Theatre’s 33rd annual Summer Tween/Teen Theater Workshop for teens entering seventh grade to graduating high school in the fall of 2016.

The Teen Theater Workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon weekdays July 11 to 22 with performances at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. July 23.

All classes and performances are held at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich.

The fee for the program is $90 a student. A workshop T-shirt is included in the fee.

In a rigorous but relaxed atmosphere, students will explore their inner talents, develop self-confidence,

work on team-building, and discover all the facets required to rehearse and perform a full-length play. This year’s show is “The Dining Room,” by the American playwright A. R. Gurney, directed by Kathie Hart.

The play is set in a single dining room where 18 scenes from different households overlap and intertwine.

Each story is focused around a different family during different time periods who have in their possession the same dining room furniture set manufactured in 1898.

“A Stargazing Event” will be the theme for the next DeKalb Municipal Band concert on Tuesday, June 28, at Hopkins Park in DeKalb. The performance will feature vocalist Barb McCaskey, music of the galaxy and an opportunity for the audience to view the sky through telescopes immediately following the concert.

McCaskey has performed in theaters that include Stagecoach Barb Players in DeKalb, Steel McCaskey Beam Theater in St. Charles and New American Theater and Clocktower Theater in Rockford.

Her favorite roles include Eva Peron in “Evita,” Mary in “Merrily We Roll Along,” the Witch and the Baker’s Wife in “Into The Woods,” the Narrator in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and Joannie in the Stage Coach production of “Company.”

In her fourth appearance on the DeKalb Municipal Band stage, McCaskey will sing the old favorite “Blue Moon,” Hoagy Carmichael’s “Star Dust” and “When You Wish Upon a

Star” from the Disney animated film “Pinocchio.”

The band will play three traditional Sousa marches, “Bombasto” and “The Thunderer” and “The Transit of Venus” to follow the program’s special theme. Two other marches, also sky related, include “Aces of the Air”

by Karl King and “Captain America March” from the 2011 film.

Music from galaxy-related movies includes “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Music from E.T.,” “Star Trek” and “Fantasy Adventures at the Movies,” which includes music from “Back to the Future” and “The Rocketeer.”

“The Blue Danube Waltz” by Johann Strauss II may seem like it doesn’t fit on this music of the galaxy program, but Stanley Kubrick employed it in “2001 Space Odyssey” to associate the spinning motion of the satellites and the dancers of waltzes.

After the concert, the audience is invited to view the stars through powerful telescopes set up in various locations of the park.

28 Shift workers need regular sleep schedule Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I discussed the health hazards of shift workers – particularly those who work evening and night shifts. More than 9 million people in the United States are shift workers.

When I was in medical training, boy, was I a shift worker. During my internship, every other weekend I would wake up on Saturday morning and drive to the hospital. The next time my head touched a pillow was Monday evening. In between, it was nonstop.

I’m glad those days are over for me. And that they’re also over for today’s interns, who get a lot more sleep than I and my colleagues used to. That’s a good thing, given what we now know about how sleep deprivation affects a person’s ability to think – and how important it is for doctors to be able to think.

Nevertheless, I’ll admit I sometimes reminisce with colleagues whom I trained with, and compare our experience to that of today’s trainees. When we reminisce, we refer to ourselves as the “iron men” (few women were in medicine then). And we refer to the experience of today’s trainees as “lifestyle-intensive.”

Some shift workers have trouble concentrating and focusing during the evenings or nights they are working. Once, when I was an intern and feeling like a zombie, I asked a well-rested colleague how I appeared to him. He replied, “You’re coherent, but that’s about it.”

Sleep specialists I talk to recommend what my grandmother would have recommended: a strong cup of coffee, early in the shift. (My grandmother also might have said, “You need to be a sleep specialist to give such advice?”)

However, caffeine doesn’t do it for everyone. Another option is a stimulant medicine called modafinil. One careful study

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff of more than 200 shift workers showed 74 percent of those given this medicine, compared to just 36 percent of those given a sugar pill, had at least minimal improvement in their ability to concentrate. However, many of them remained impaired despite the treatment.

It is really important for shift workers who need to get their sleep during the daytime to do the following: • Work with your employer to make your shift schedule steady: not nights for several days, then evenings, then nights, then days. Make it the same shift every day for several weeks.

• Make sure your bedroom has strong light-blocking shades and no sunlight creeps into the room from around the edges of the shades. Even a little sunlight can discourage your brain from sleeping.

• Reduce any noise. For many shift workers, that involves the use of soft rubber earplugs.

• If you can’t sleep for at least seven consecutive daytime hours, try at least to get four hours shortly after arriving home, and another three to four hours later in the day.

• If you can’t sleep the minute you arrive home – for example, if you have to help get the kids off to school – then begin sleeping right afterward.

• Try to make your sleep schedule a regular one, starting and ending at the same time(s) each day.

I have fought obesity all of my adult life, and my weight has yo-yoed over the years. My problem is, when I go to the doctor’s office and I am taken to the exam area, the scale is right out in the open where other patients come and go as well as all the office personnel.

Mind you, I don’t care if I am weighed in the presence of people walking around – if they don’t peek. However, when the medical assistant is done weighing me, she reads the scale out loud. I have felt humiliated when other patients are walking past. I have put up with this for years.

Recently, this medical assistant weighed me and I just knew she was going to “announce” my weight. This time there was a man I could tell was a patient, standing nearby at the reception window staring intently at me getting weighed. Because I was sure the M.A. was going to say it out loud, I started to cough to try to muffle the sound of her voice. It worked, but then she acted irritated because of my coughing, so she repeated it loudly. I was very embarrassed, to say the least. When the doctor saw me, I was afraid to say anything as I didn’t want to get anybody in trouble.

I graduated from a medical assistant school many years ago and I remember the registered nurse who was our instructor taught us to never say out loud somebody’s weight when you weigh him or her. It only makes common sense.

I no longer want to go back to that doctor’s office.

Do you have any advice for me when this happens again? I say again because it happens at other doctor’s offices I visit as well. I am at a loss here. I would appreciate your input. – Still
