Growing up I didn’t have many family traditions.

In fact, the only one I can even remember is on Christmas morning. My mother told us that an orange in our stocking was good luck in the Norwegian culture.

I haven’t done any research on this tradition, so I don’t know whether there is any validity to it. I do know that while I was a child, I thought it was a hoax. I thought for sure my mom was just putting the orange in our stocking for bulk and frugality.

Whether fact or fiction, this idea of tradition stuck with me.

It’s important to me that my toddler grows up with strong family values and traditions.

The Elf on the Shelf comes to our home at Christmas. Of course we do Cornfest in the summer and the Pumpkin Festival for Halloween.

Like most families, we do something for each religious and nonreligious holiday. These traditions will set the stage for Hannah Jo’s memories. But these aren’t the ones I am most endeared by.

My husband, bless his heart, started a tradition that I ooze over. Each Sunday my husband takes our daughter to Dunkin’ Donuts. He calls it Daddy-Daughter Doughnut Day! Hannah Jo knows it’s Sunday because they go get doughnuts together. Sometimes they eat there, or sometimes they bring one home for mama.

Unfortunately, this tradition is sometimes interrupted by Daddy’s business travel. So on the Sundays he is not around, he makes up for it ei-

WASHINGTON – After flying through dangerous dark and cold, a rescue plane landed Tuesday at the South Pole to evacuate a sick worker from a remote U.S. science station, federal officials said.

These small moments ingrained a lifetime of love for doughnuts and, of course, tradition.

To our family a doughnut is more than just a pastry. Throughout generations it has become a tradition. For Hannah Jo, a strawberry sprinkled doughnut will be forever etched in her heart as moments spent with her Daddy.

Through her trials and triumphs I know these Daddy-Daughter Doughnut Days will provide a sense of comfort.

I hope as we grow, as a family, we will develop other sweet traditions.

Appointee would review McCullough’s release from prison

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A judge will allow a hearing to determine whether DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack’s involvement in a 59-year-old cold case is undermined by a campaign promise he allegedly made before taking office.

The hearing is scheduled for July 12, when attorney Bruce Brandwein will call three witnesses he said will prove Schmack’s conflict of interest in the investigation of the 1957 murder of Maria Ridulph.

By Thursday, Brandwein must provide Schmack with any information he plans to present during the evidentiary hearing, Brady said. The state’s attorney has until July 6 to file a response.

Schmack declined to comment since he could be called as a witness in July.

Maria Ridulph’s older brother, Charles Ridulph, claimed in May the state’s attorney made a promise during his 2012 campaign to drop murder charges against Jack McCullough. McCullough was convicted in 2012 of abducting Maria Ridulph from near her Sycamore home and killing her. The conviction was upheld on appeal. Judge William Brady agreed with Schmack’s request to dismiss murder charges against McCullough, 76, in April.

In July, Brandwein plans to call former DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Julie Trevarthen as a witness.

She said she “heard Mr. Schmack state that if elected as state’s attorney he would dismiss the murder charges,” according to court documents.

Brandwein will have to prove who was around when and if any promises were made, what exactly was said, and to whom, Brady said.

Although Schmack denies having ever made a campaign promise to vacate McCullough’s murder conviction and have him released from the Pontiac

Correctional Facility, he argued Tuesday that even if the allegations were true, they wouldn’t be grounds to dismiss him as prosecutor on the case.

“If in fact, the state’s attorney were to make promises of this sort, I think the thing is a complaint of fulfilling a campaign promise,” Schmack said in court Tuesday.

Just the appearance of an impropriety, however, would be enough to appoint a special prosecutor to look at the evidence and determine whether the state was correct in its decision, Brandwein said.

“This is something different than a state’s attorney getting elected and saying, ‘Judge, I reviewed the file, I did what I was supposed to do, and my decision is there’s not enough evidence,’ ” Brandwein said. “That’s not what we have here. We have an absolute appearance of impropriety. “ Attorneys Thomas McDonell and Jim Kaplan attended court Tuesday on behalf of the MacArthur Justice Center, a public interest law firm that is part of Northwestern University School of Law’s Bluhm Legal Clinic. The firm filed a friend of the court brief in the case Monday. The brief claims Schmack has no conflict of interest in the case and no special prosecutor is warranted.

Brady will take into consideration the MacArthur Justice Center’s filing, but would like the case to come to a close soon, he told Brandwein on Tuesday.

“I’ve been addressing this issue now for six months. It’s at a point in time here I would certainly expect there be some resolution to these issues, and I’m going to hold you to that,” Brady said.

Regardless of the judge’s decision July 12, the hearing is a victory for the Ridulph family, Brandwein said.

“Obviously, we don’t know what the end result’s going to be, but at least they’ll get to have their day in court and have a judge make a ruling based on the evidence.”

DeKalb council to look at fiscal 2016.5 budget

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The city could spend more than $21 million as part of a sixmonth budget plan, which could nibble away at the general fund balance that has rebounded steadily since being nearly depleted in the wake of the Great Recession.

DeKalb officials set a plan to maintain a minimum level of 25 percent of expenditures in the general fund.

This account is used to pay most of the city’s bills and employees’ salaries. When the economy took a downturn from 2007 to 2009, that balance went as low as 1 percent.

With the budget passed for fiscal 2016, which runs from July 1, 2015, to June 30, the reserves are expected to hit 27 percent percent, according to city budget data.

“The dollars are at the highest they have been in the past 10 years for our reserve balance,” said Kathy Haley, the city’s finance director.

But as DeKalb officials work on the budget to fund the last half of the year, it could dip to 25 percent. The City Council did a first reading of the budget during its June 14 meeting, and is expected to take final action Monday.

Haley presented a $49.3 million budget to the council, which includes a deficit in the general fund of about $600,000. It also calls for spending $889,418 on two new ambulances and two police cars, new financial software, some fire department equipment and more. Also budgeted is money to hire a city information technology director.

“We weren’t cutting any service levels,” Haley said. “We were looking to increase some of our efficiencies through technology.”

police officers, whose union contract expires June 30, and 2.5 percent increase for fire personnel whose contract is awaiting City Council approval.

Spending from other funds includes $175,000 for street maintenance and $15,000 for fire station repairs.

But some aldermen are looking for ways to cut spending in the six months spending plan – called fiscal 2016.5. It runs only through the end of the calendar year because DeKalb will switch cycles starting Jan. 1,

2017, to have the fiscal and calendar years run the same.

City staff have presented aldermen with at least three options for how to reduce costs, including buying only one ambulance and one police car this time around, instead of two each.

That would be a $191,000 savings for now, according to the budget proposal.

Also, the city could save $20,000 by reducing demolition costs for Protano’s.

draft presented to the City Council, there were joint budget committee meetings where several other savings ideas were offered, aldermen pointed out. The elected officials requested to have those other suggestions put into the budget draft.

Alderman David Jacobson, 1st Ward, said at the June 13 meeting that he wanted to see all of those other suggestions listed and incorporated into the budget draft. Those are expected to be added to a proposal aldermen may vote on Monday.

That’s the most likely time for severe weather, he said. Izzi said there’s still some uncertainty in the forecast and the outlook could change depending on what happens earlier in the day Wednesday.

The Rev. Roger E. Cheek, age 87, died Monday June 20, 2016, in Pinecrest Terrace, Mount Morris, IL. Roger was born March 5, 1929, in Leaf River, IL, the son of Edward E. and Violet (Kretsinger) Cheek.

Roger graduated from Leaf River High School.

Roger married Lorraine Ellen Hartje on Oct. 23, 1948, in Leaf River IL; served in the U.S. Air Force; and was employed in the tool and die industry. At age 35 he went back to school; received a bachelor’s degree from Dakota Wesleyan University and a master’s degree from Garrett Theological Seminary; and for 26 years, he served as a United Methodist Church minister. His ministry led them to make many communities in southeastern South Dakota and northern Illinois home. Roger and Lorraine lived in rural Galena before coming to Mount Morris 18 years ago.

All who knew him will remember he was a true “Jack of All Trades.” He was passionate about cars and engines all of his life.

He rebuilt countless cars, trucks, engines, and many, many pieces of equipment of all shapes and sizes. He loved camping and fishing and loved the outdoors. He built their retirement home with the help of only family and friends on a seclude spot overlooking the Mississippi River. His hands could fix or build anything and he rarely failed and never “gave up.” Mostly he loved his family and made everybody he met a friend.

Roger is survived by his wife, Lorraine; four children, Denise & Deborah Cheek, Mount Morris, IL, Edward (Rebecca) Cheek, DeKalb, IL, Belinda Cheek, Naperville, IL, and Marilyn Mason, Naperville, IL; three grandchildren, Rhonda Cheek, Heather Cheek and Ethan (Amanda) Cheek; and one great-grandchild, Liam Cheek.

SYCAMORE – Police are warning DeKalb County residents about a badcheck scheme and asking those who may have been victims to come forward.

Eric. B. Kane, 40, of the 600 block of North Fifth Street, DeKalb, faces felony charges in connection with fraudulent checks deposited at the First State Bank branch in Waterman. However, police are concerned there may be other victims.

“There may be other Eric B. victims out there,” Wa- Kane terman police Sgt. Jason Swanson said. “We want any businesses or people who’ve had dealings with him to contact law enforcement.”

Kane allegedly wrote 24 bad checks totaling $48,241.41. Most of the checks were to car and motorcycle dealerships, including at least two in DeKalb County, Swanson said.

In addition, Swanson said, police are investigating to see whether the man

took advantage or coerced women to aid in the scheme. Swanson said he told at least two women he was a Marine, had a bank account with $80,000 in it and persuaded them to allow him to use their credit.

“Their credit has effectively been destroyed by this guy,” Swanson said.

“There is a human toll to these crimes.”

The Cook County Fugitive Task Force arrested Kane on June 17 in Cook County. He remained at the Cook County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.

Police continue to investigate the case and additional charges could be filed in DeKalb County, Swanson said.

Kane has been charged with financial institution fraud, deceptive practices and forgery in connection with a $2,969.71 check deposited at an ATM at First State Bank in Waterman, court records show.

If convicted of the most serious charge, financial institution fraud, a Class 3 felony, Kane could face up to five years in prison.

Kane has faced similar charges in Kane County, according to court records.

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A U.S. postal inspector accused of soliciting a prostitute has asked a judge to suppress evidence in the case, claiming the arresting officers violated his Fourth Amendment rights.

Dean Kowalefski, 51, of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, was charged in June 2015 with soliciting a prostitute after police said employees at Spa One in Sycamore identified him in a photograph and said he gave a spa employee money in exchange for a sex act. The man’s attorney has argued police performed an unlawful search and seizure and arrested Kowalefski without a valid warrant while he was not committing a crime.

Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault said he could not comment because he has been asked to testify at a later date.

Kowalefski’s attorney, Clay Campbell, has asked a judge to bar certain evidence from being admitted in a future trial. DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery presided over a hearing Tuesday to suppress the evidence.

On June 11, 2015, police were parked outside Spa One in Sycamore, where an investigation into possible prostitution was underway. Police saw customers as they entered the business, Sycamore police Det. Ryan Goodman testified Tuesday. Investigators would then stop customers as they left, by pulling them over for traffic violations, Goodman said.

In H. Tobin, a 53-year-old woman from the 2000 block of North First Street in DeKalb, was charged with three counts of promoting prostitution.

Two other employees at the spa, Huyang Kim, 48, and Mi Ra Downing, 49, also were charged with misdemeanor prostitution, punishable by less than a year in jail.

Police said both had previous prostitution convictions.

ing Kowalefski, in connection with the suspected prostitution. Each of the other men admitted to receiving a sexual act at Spa One, although neither of them was arrested, Goodman said.

Kowalefski was pulled over for failing to use a turn signal. However, when officers ran his license plate, they noticed he was driving a federal vehicle, Goodman said. They later learned he was employed as a U.S. postal inspector.

It was unclear whether Kowalefski still held a federal law enforcement position.

“There was concern about his employment at the time,” Goodman said in court Tuesday.

Campbell said Kowalefski was illegally detained.

“Following the seizure of [Kowalefski] for the traffic violation, [Kowalefski] was detained for an unreasonable amount of time considering the nature of the traffic infraction,” Campbell wrote in his request.

When police questioned him about the spa, Kowalefski told an officer he got a massage but no “extras.”

He found the business on an internet classified ad website, court records show.

Kowalefski is accused of paying $80 for a massage, and an additional $46 for sexual acts.

Downing identified Kowalefski and Tobin from photographs Sycamore police took during the traffic stops and investigation and told officials the money Kowalefski paid was stored in a makeup drawer in the front of the office, police have said.

After getting a search warrant, police found the money in the drawer.

Tobin was the only employee of the spa with a massage therapy license, and Kim told officers she did not know Tobin’s name and referred to her only as “boss,” police reports show.

The hearing will resume July 8, with possible testimony from Theriault.

About 40 people from the small-business community attended the Tuesday forum at the Shah Center for Corporate Training and the Illinois Small Business Development Center. The forum, “Fighting for Opportunity: Unleashing the Power of Small Business,” aimed to provide tips and solutions on how to help small businesses grow.

Hultgren, R-Plano, co-hosted the forum with CEO Alfredo Ortiz of the Job Creators Network, a national or-

ganization that seeks to promote job-friendly legislation by educating business employees about government policy.

Hultgren started off U.S. Rep. the forum recognizing Randy the challenges small Hultgren businesses face every day. Some obstacles small-business owners in McHenry County are dealing with include high taxes and government regulations, he said. According to a national poll of small-business owners provided by the Job Creators Network, 66 percent believe taxes threaten the viability of their businesses.

Other issues brought up included

uncertainty over the future, high property taxes, competition from large corporations and the struggle to hire new employees. High taxes are making it harder for small-business owners to be able to afford new workers, Hultgren and Ortiz said.

While Hultgren said he believes the nation needs huge corporations, he stressed the importance of small business, which he called the “true heartbeat of our country.” He introduced a bill on May 27 to lower small businesses’ tax rate for the first $150,000 of income to 10 percent and to 20 percent for their first $1 million of income. The bill also would let small businesses immediately expense all equipment investments.

CHICAGO – A suburban Milwaukee city won a hard-fought battle Tuesday to draw its drinking water from Lake Michigan in the first test of a compact designed to safeguard the Great Lakes region’s abundant but vulnerable fresh water supply.

A panel representing governors of the eight states adjoining the lakes unanimously approved a proposal from Waukesha, Wisconsin, which is under a court order to find a solution to radium contamination of its groundwater wells. The city said the project will cost $207 million for engineering studies, pipelines and other infrastructure.

Waukesha is only 17 miles from the lake but just outside the Great Lakes watershed. That required the city of about 72,000 to get special permission under the compact, which prohibits most diversions of water across the watershed boundary. The 2008 pact established a potential exception for communities within counties that straddle the line. Waukesha is the first to request water under that provision.

Waukesha said it would remove only a tiny fraction of Lake Michigan’s supply and return the same amount as treated wastewater.

SPRINGFIELD – The lack of a state budget may hinder Illinois Conservation Police from monitoring outdoor recreational activities this summer.

The State Journal-Register reported that Illinois Department of Natural Resources spokesman Tim Schweizer said the department intends to have officers available this summer, but he called on Democratic legislative leaders to approve a stopgap budget to ensure adequate enforcement.

Schweizer said the conservation police are concerned about how to keep boat patrols going.

In a 2013 report, the Alliance identified eight other cities near the watershed as potential suitors for Great Lakes water if Waukesha were approved, although none has announced such plans.

Michigan woman admits to thefts from animal shelter

SPRINGFIELD – A Michigan woman has pleaded guilty in federal court to stealing at least $42,000 from an Illinois animal shelter.

Susan G. Oldham of Allentown, Michigan, entered the plea Monday. The 59-year-old is formerly of rural Havana in Mason County. The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reported her plea was part of a deal with prosecutors who plan to ask for a one-year prison term at her Oct. 21 sentencing. Three additional felonies would be dropped.

Authorities said Oldham stole the money from the nonprofit Mason County Pets Without Parents while she volunteered from 2006 until 2010. Court documents show she spent some of the money on gourmet cookies and Amtrak tickets.

Oldham’s attorney had no comment on the plea. The newspaper reported she previously was convicted of embezzlement and money laundering.

Clinton casts Trump as ‘reckless’ on economy

The Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio – Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that Donald Trump would send the U.S. economy back into recession, warning his “reckless” approach would hurt workers still trying to recover from the 2008 economic turbulence.

Clinton’s address in Ohio, one of the most important battleground states, sought to define Trump as little more than a con man, whose ignorance and ego would tank the global economy, bankrupt Americans and risk the country’s future.

“Every day we see how reckless and careless Trump is. He’s proud of it,” the Democratic presidential candidate said. “Well, that’s his choice. Except when he’s asking to be our president. Then it’s our choice.”

The speech was similar to one earlier this month in San Diego in which Clinton tried to undercut the Republican candidate’s foreign policy credentials. This time, at an alternative high school in Columbus, she questioned whether Trump has the temperament to guide the economy and repeatedly pointed to his business record as evidence of how he would treat small businesses and working families.

“Just like he shouldn’t have his finger on the button, he shouldn’t have his hands on our economy,” Clinton said. Her speech included stinging one-liners, including a takedown of Trump’s best-selling books.

“He’s written a lot of books about business. But they all seem to end at Chapter 11,” she said, in an allusion to the U.S. bankruptcy code.

Trump responded on Twitter as Clinton delivered her address, writing in one tweet: “How can Hillary run the economy when she can’t even send emails without putting entire nation at risk?”

He appeared to be referring to Clinton blending her personal and official emails on a homebrew server in her house, while she was secretary of state.

The businessman later appeared to embrace one of Clinton’s attack lines, writing: “I am ‘the king of debt.’ That has been great for me as a businessman, but is bad for the country. I made a fortune off of debt, will fix U.S.” Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said Clinton was “the last person qualified” to talk about improving the economy, pointing to “eight years of disastrous Obama policies.”

Clinton used Trump’s own statements to undercut his economic credentials, citing remarks he made that that U.S. could sell off assets, default on its debt and that wages are too high. She also repeated a comment he made that pregnant employees are an “inconvenience.”

Clinton said financial markets often “rise and fall” on comments by presidential candidates. Suggesting the U.S. could default on its debt could cause a “global panic,” she added.

Attorney general visits Orlando Lynch says there is no ‘magic bullet’ against jihadist propaganda The ASSOCIATED PRESS ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando massacre at a popular gay nightclub shows no one yet has “found the magic bullet” to prevent Americans from being inspired to violence by jihadist propaganda on the internet, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Tuesday as she visited a city still shaken by the shootings.

Countering the narrative of radical extremism continues to be a challenge for the government, Lynch said in an interview with The Associated Press.

“How do we break that chain? How do we counter this extremist ideology that’s online, knowing that the internet has to remain free and open?” she said. “What can we get out there that’s a counter-message to that?”

At the scene of the carnage, workers removed a temporary fence that was erected around the Pulse nightclub. State officials wondered how they would pay for resources drained

by the June 12 massacre, and investigators kept probing for gunman Omar Mateen’s motives for the rampage, in which 49 people were killed and dozens more wounded. Mateen died in a gun battle with police.

Lynch said investigators may never pinpoint a single motive and have not ruled out witness reports suggesting Mateen might have been at Pulse before or had gay Loretta interests.

“While we know a lot Lynch more about him in terms of who he was and what he did, I do not want to definitively rule out any particular motivation here,” she said, later adding, “It’s entirely possible that he had a singular motive. It’s entirely possible that he had a dual motive.”

In a 911 call from the club, Mateen pledged solidarity with the Islamic State group, and Lynch said there’s no doubt, based on evidence gathered during the investigation, that he had read and absorbed extremist propaganda on the internet.

“We believe that is certainly one avenue of radicalization, but we want to know if there are others,” she said in the interview. “We want to know ev-

erything he did in the days, weeks and months leading up to this attack.”

“We still do believe that this was an act of terror and an act of hate,” she added.

Speaking to reporters later, she called the rampage a “shattering attack – our nation, on our people and on our most fundamental ideals.” She also directly addressed the LGBT community, saying, “We stand with you to say that the good in the world far outweighs the evil ... and that our most effective response to terror and hatred is compassion, unity and love.”

While in Orlando, Lynch visited a memorial, praised the actions of first responders and met with victims’ relatives. Her remarks at a news conference followed meetings with U.S. Attorney Lee Bentley and other law enforcement officials, including prosecutors assigned to the investigation.

Lynch’s meeting with first responders came as Orlando police faced continued questions about their response.

On Monday, Police Chief John Mina said that if any fire from responding officers hit victims at the club, Mateen bears the responsibility. “Those killings are on the suspect, on the suspect alone, in my mind,” he said.

BRIEF U.S.-led coalition says only third of Fallujah cleared of IS

BAGHDAD – Only a third of Fallujah has been “cleared” of Islamic State militants, the U.S.-led coalition said Tuesday, days after the Iraqi government declared victory in the city west of Baghdad, which was held by the extremists for more than two years.

Other parts of the city are “contested,” said U.S. Army Col. Christopher Garver, the Baghdad-based spokesman for the coalition, with clashes underway between Iraqi forces and IS fighters. Most of the cleared terrain is in the south of the city and “clearing operations continue outward from the city center,” Garver added.

Iraqi forces pushed into the center of Fallujah on Friday, retaking a government complex and the central hospital.

That evening Brig. Gen. Haider al-Obedi, with Iraq’s special forces, told The Associated Press his troops controlled 80 percent of the city.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said Friday that Fallujah had “returned to the embrace of the nation,” and that remaining IS pockets would be “cleaned out within hours.”

Legend says the two-part bridal cup was created in the 1700s to win a bride. A nobleman in Germany was upset when his daughter refused her rich suitors because she wanted to marry a goldsmith. Her father imprisoned the goldsmith and his daughter became ill because she was denied her true love. The nobleman thought he could trick the daughter by agreeing to the marriage if the goldsmith could do an impossible task make a cup that two people can drink from at the same time without spilling a drop. But the clever and talented goldsmith made a silver figure of the girl. Her skirt was hollow so it could be used as a cup. Her raised arms held a small swinging cup. Both of the lovers could drink from the cups at the same time.

Today, the wedding cup symbolizes love, faithfulness and good luck for the bridal couple that drinks from it. An antique German cup marked with a British import mark for 1908 was sold by New Orleans Auctions in 2015 for $522. To get a cup for a bride to use today, check antique sales and shops. A number are sold each year and there are even new ones available. *** Q: I have a Worley Water Waver. It’s a device for curling or waving ladies’ hair that was invented by my Grandad in 1926. I also have the original patent that was issued to him in 1927. Hair could be curled in a “Marcel” wave, a popular style of the day, by pressing it against the wavy surface of the steel chamber that held hot water. It was a forerunner of the modern curling iron. But not many were made because the financial backers of the project went under with the stock market crash. After the crash, my Grandfather moved from the northeast to Florida-and with a supply of the wavers, which he sold as he traveled down the highways. The cords were removed because they were sold to women on farms where electricity wasn’t very common, but putting hot water in the chamber still curled the hair!

I’m curious to know if it has any value other

than sentimental.

A: There aren’t many Worley Water Wavers around, but there was one listed in an online shop for $75. There is a similar device, called the West Electric Water Waver, also from the 1920s that could be used to curl or wave hair, which sold for about $25. Your waver may be worth a bit more than $75 because you have the original box and patent document. A local history museum or a collector who specializes in kitchen or cosmetic appliances might be interested in your waver, as well as your grandfather’s story. *** Q: I have a felt doll with a painted face and mohair wig. She’s wearing a Spanish dancer’s costume and is about 12 inches tall. She has a gold tag that reads “Klumpe, Patentado, Barcelona.”What is the doll worth?

A: Klumpe is one of several companies in Barcelona that made molded felt dolls dressed in Spanish costumes for the tourist trade in Spain from 1952 until the 1970s. The felt is molded over wire, making the dolls posable.

Effanbee and other companies imported the dolls into the U. S. Dolls made before the mid1960s are of better quality that those made later. Dolls with accessories sell for more than those without. Klumpe and Roldan are two makers collectors look for. The dolls are not very popular with collectors. They sell for about $10-$20. *** Q: I’ve been collecting old books and magazines for many years. Some are “The New Peerless World Atlas” from 1918, “Frye’s Complete Geography” from 1898, old “Look,” “Life,” and other magazines. Are they more valuable intact, or should I remove the maps from the atlases and the covers and ads from the magazines and sell them individually?

A: Old books don’t sell well unless they are first editions or are rare and there isn’t much interest in old magazines. Keep them intact and take them to a used book store to see what you can get for them. They may not be interested in the magazines, but will give you a price for the books. Lock the door on state legislators

The official calendar for the Illinois House of Representatives said the legislative body was in session for 89 session days in 2015.

So far in 2016, the state House has been in session 53 total days, according to the calendar. The state Senate is at 51 days.

We are the only state in the country without a budget for the fiscal year that began in July and ends June 30. Pennsylvania passed its budget in March. The Keystone State was No. 49.

Illinois has gone more than 11 months now without agreeing on a plan for the current fiscal year. Oh, and there’s no approved budget for next year, either.

Yes, some stopgap spending plans have passed to keep schools open and fund critical state operations, but because there’s not a comprehensive budget, Illinois is spending billions more than it brings in, further eroding the state’s fiscal health.

Speaker Mike Madigan’s solution?

The House will meet every Wednesday in Springfield to work out a solution.

No state budget. Schools in danger of not opening. Social service agencies already closing. Businesses facing uncertain times. Oh, and now it takes a three-fifths majority instead of a simple majority to pass a new state budget because we’re past the May 31 deadline.

These are all facts, and the solution is ... come to Springfield once a week?

May we offer one more solution once all of the members are seated in the chamber in Springfield today? Lock the door from the outside, and the legislative body is not allowed to leave without a balanced budget that keeps schools and social service agencies open.

If that sounds uncomfortable, too bad. If it sounds like it’s too hard, tough.

Taxpayers have been pushed beyond uncomfortable in this state for years.

Madigan and Gov. Bruce Rauner continuing their political war accomplishes nothing.

There simply is no excuse for why state lawmakers aren’t in Springfield working out a budget until we have a solution.

Illinois will continue to be a laughingstock and a place for citizens to flee from until this is resolved.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR DeKalb clergy respond to Orlando shootings

To the Editor: DeKalb clergy gathered around a breakfast table at a the Lincoln Inn on June 15 to share our common grief and lament for those who died at the Pulse nightcub on Latin night June 12. We met so that we could plan how, together, our faith communities in DeKalb might collectively respond to the horrific events of that early morning in Orlando.

Together our hearts are broken and our souls are weary at the increasing gun violence that we are witnessing in our country and in our communities. We know this pain personally and too well, as we also recall the shooting at Northern Illinois University in February 2008.

As faith leaders, we are aware and deeply grieved by the history and legacy of injustice within our own faith communities. Hateful rhetoric has been used to justify violence.

And the violence gives rise to increased feelings of fear and anger.

As a result, we become more and more alienated and isolated from

one another. In the wake of the massacre in Orlando, we can see that our LGBTQ neighbors, our Hispanic neighbors, and our Muslim neighbors now bear the brunt of this collective fear and alienation. This is a betrayal of our common humanity.

While we ministers cherish our unique spiritual traditions and our various cultural communities, at the same time we deeply honor our common humanity. If we are all made in the image of God, then we are defiling God’s love for humankind by saying nothing after a tragedy such as this.

We must speak.

We must act. And we must begin in our own city of DeKalb and in our own neighborhoods.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, we will hold an interfaith gathering at First Lutheran Church, 324 N. Third St., DeKalb.

All are welcome. We seek a time together to lament, remember, repent and restore our community.

As neighbors we can listen and learn from one another. May our prayers, our music, and our time

together change us, to be the people of faith and love that we aspire to be.

Because for the record, I’m not the only one who sees the shadow of Germany in the 1930s over America in the 2010s.

Once again, a clownish demagogue bestrides the political landscape, demonizing vulnerable peoples, bullying opponents, encouraging violence, offering simplistic, strongman solutions to difficult and complex problems, and men and women who bear more moral authority on this subject than I ever could see something chilling and familiar in him.

“I don’t want to make any comparison to Hitler, but believe it or not his delivery and the way he conducts himself is very similar to Hitler’s way of doing things. He discredits everybody who disagrees with him. He’s insulting. He discriminates against everybody.” So says Martin Weiss.

He’s a survivor of Auschwitz.

“It is repeating itself and it is again the inattention that people pay to real cues that one should understand. ... I think one has to speak up. And that’s the one lesson from the Holocaust. Do not be a bystander.” So says Margit Meissner, who fled occupied France on foot through the Pyrenees. Like Weiss, she spoke in January to Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank.

Then there is Eva Schloss, who in January said of Trump, “I think he is acting like another Hitler...” Schloss, who spoke to Newsweek, was the stepsister of Anne Frank.

No, I don’t predict a new Holocaust if Trump bamboozles America into electing him. But some new calamity, inconceivable to us now, but repulsive to the values we claim to hold dear, does seem certain. And that raises a question: If one should never be too quick to make comparisons to Germany in the 1930s, is it not also important, on the rare occasions it is merited, to make sure one is not too slow?

One reason, after all, that no one saw Hitler for what he was is that people simply could not conceive of

anything as preposterously monstrous as what eventually occurred. They took refuge in the assurance – the false assurance, as it turned out – that reason would eventually reassert itself.

The failure of imagination is often a component in tragedy. That’s why I’ve always declined to blame the Bush administration for 9/11. Before that, who could have conceived of fanatics using jetliners as missiles?

But afterward is another story.

Once you have seen for yourself that the unthinkable is not, it moves from the arena of imagination to that of history. And then, you must use it to understand where we are and help chart where we should – and should not – be going. You can’t blame people who didn’t realize what Hitler was.

They had never seen anything like him before.

You and I, however, have no such excuse.

U.S. needs more entrepreneurs, not more bureaucrats

Uber, the ride-hailing company, founded in 2009, began operations in San Francisco in 2011, and now has a presence in 449 cities worldwide. From its beginning with just a vision, the firm’s market value, by recent estimates, now exceeds $60 billion.

Uber is just one of many new emerging businesses that are the result of applying new technology to the routine affairs of living. In this case, rather than needing to hail a cab or order one from a central office, you just connect with drivers through an app on your smartphone.

When existing businesses find themselves threatened by innovation, they have two choices. Adapt and change or try to destroy the innovation that is challenging their existence.

The business that ride-hailing firms such as Uber, and its smaller rival Lyft, challenge is a highly regulated business – the taxi business – that is tightly controlled by the cities in which they operate. These are government-controlled monopolies designed to limit competition.

So it’s not surprising that the taxi business opts for option two in dealing with the threat from Uber – use government and regulation to try and squash their competition.

Of course, when competition is squashed, it’s consumers that pay the price and lose benefits and services that they otherwise would enjoy.

The latest push to squeeze out Uber and Lyft is to require fingerprinting as part of driver background checks and running the fingerprints through an FBI arrest database.

Uber says it does background checks by name, working with a firm that checks court information to uncover criminal records.

Recently Uber and Lyft pulled out of Austin, Texas, because of the city’s refusal to pull the fingerprinting requirement.

Let’s think about this for a minute.

If a horrible incident occurs that is the result of Uber not adequately checking its drivers, the firm could well wind up out of business. Who has more to lose if Uber doesn’t do its business properly – Uber or a politician who claims to be looking out for consumers but in all likelihood has been lobbied by the taxi companies

and just wants to preserve the status quo?

John H. Cochrane, a fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, has written recently about the anemic economic growth of the country. This slow growth translates into huge losses in jobs and income.

Cochrane attributes this slow growth to bloated government and an overregulated economy.

“The country needs a dramatic legal and regulatory simplification, restoring the rule of law,” he says.

“State and local impediments such as occupational licensing and zoning are also part of the problem. ... Economic regulation is largely designed to protect profits, jobs and wages tied to old ways of doing things. Everyone likes growth, but only in someone else’s backyard.”

Uber has an unusual ally in its battle against fingerprinting in the Congressional Black Caucus. But the Caucus is on the right side of this issue for the wrong reason.

They argue that fingerprinting will cause discrimination against blacks.

Fingerprinting checks reveal arrests, not convictions, and blacks, they say, are arrested disproportionately.

According to a survey commissioned by Uber, 24 percent of their drivers are black.

I use Uber all the time and meet these young black drivers, making extra money and building their entrepreneurial skills.

Protecting the status quo from competition is not in anyone’s interest. Certainly not the interests of low-income Americans who want to get ahead.

A new report from the University of California, Riverside School of Business Administration notes that the number of black-owned businesses grew 40.3 percent from 2007 to 2012, compared with 3.4 percent nationwide.

The last thing these new black entrepreneurs need is to be regulated out of business.

We should be welcoming innovation, not trying to crush it. A country obsessed with protecting the past has no future.

Yes, Hitler.

Some of you questioned my evocation of history’s great villain in a recent column on House Speaker Paul Ryan’s surrender to presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump. I likened Ryan to Franz von Papen, a German politician who helped Adolf Hitler rise to power under the naive delusion that he could control him.

A handful of Trump fans found that, as one put it, “a bit of a stretch.”

One guy expressed his skepticism through the time-honored expedient of the triple punctuation mark: “Hitler???”

Yes, Hitler.

Not that their dubiousness is unreasonable. In recent years, Hitler and the Holocaust have popped up in political debate as routinely as dandelions on the lawn. One man said having to tack a “No Smoking” sign on his building was like being a Jew forced to wear a yellow star; another claimed popular anger over the excesses of the rich was reminiscent of Kristallnacht.

Almost by definition, Hitler and Holocaust comparisons trivialize that era and reveal the ignorant insensitiv-

Diehl wins honor for second year in a row

jseverson@shawmedia.com SHABBONA – The days of being a three-sport star for Indian Creek are finally over for Josie Diehl.

She will narrow her focus to basketball as she moves on to University of Wisconsin-La Crosse after a standout career for the Timberwolves that is capped by her being named the Daily Chronicle Girls Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row.

“I’m excited because it’s probably my favorite sport and it’s what I want to do,” Diehl said. “It’ll be good. It will definitely help me get better. I mean all three sports – volleyball and soccer have helped me as a basketball player, too.”

Diehl was a goalkeeper for the Timberwolves and was a major part of the volleyball team that advanced to a regional final. However, her impact was felt the most on the basketball court, where she helped the Timberwolves to the best season in school history.

She led the team in points (14.4) and rebounds (10.6) to give Indian Creek a third-place finish at the Class 1A state tournament and an overall record of 322. It was a team that captured the hearts of the surrounding communities, Indi-

“I think that was the really nice thing was that the girls realized as we were going on the run and more and more people were coming to games – I even talked about it at Christmas time, you’re going to see more people and more people,” Muchmore said. “It was great to have the amount of people we had our games and have different people coming to watch and people that

weren’t connected to the school other than the fact they might have went to Shabbona or they might have went to Waterman. It was a lot of fun.”

In the 56-50 win over South Holland Seton Academy in the third-place game, Diehl put up another double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds – along with blocking three shots on defense. With a decorated prep career finally over, Diehl said it that

postseason run is one thing that she’ll likely remember most.

“There will be a lot to look back on,” she said. “Definitely playing with all my friends in all three sports will be the biggest thing. The state tournament and the entire run to get there will definitely be the No. 1 thing I think of. Not every kid gets the chance to go down there.

None of us thought it would happen, so when it did, it made everything a lot sweeter. I’ll always remember that.”

She’ll join the UW-La Crosse team that went 7-18 last season and plays in Division III as a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Muchmore said that Diehl played with an unselfishness around the team – even saying possibly too unselfish at times – but that she will adapt to life as a college athlete.

“Her nature is to include everybody and that’s the great thing about her and a great thing about the team,” Muchmore said. “They accepted roles and played together and I think ultimately that’s what helped us make the run. She’ll be all right. She’s a smart kid and she works hard. She’ll do what she’s told. I have no concerns. I’m happy she’s going to try and play because I know she’s capable of playing at the collegiate level.”

Some Russians could compete under own flag

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Some Russian track and field athletes could be competing under their own flag at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics after all.

Leaders of the International Olympic Committee and track’s world governing body appeared split Tuesday over the terms of participation of any Russian athletes cleared to compete at the Aug. 5-21 games.

While upholding last week’s IAAF decision to ban Russia’s track team for systematic doping, Olympic leaders did not accept the federation’s position on a key issue: that a neutral flag would represent the few athletes given dispensation to apply to compete if they live outside Russia and have undergone rigorous testing.

IOC President Thomas Bach said that if any Russians are deemed eligible by the IAAF, they would compete under the Russian flag.

The sharp differences between the IOC and the IAAF emerged after a summit of Olympic leaders called by Bach to follow up on the IAAF’s decision to ban Russia and to take further steps to ensure a “level playing field” for athletes in all sports at the Rio Games.

The leaders called for drug testing of individual Russian and Kenyan athletes across all sports, warning that evidence of inadequate doping controls in those countries could lead to more teams being barred from the Rio de Janeiro Games.

The leaders also called on authorities to pursue sanctions not only against athletes, but also against doctors, coaches, officials and other personnel implicated in doping. Bach also lamented “deficiencies” in global drug-testing and urged the World Anti-Doping Agency to hold a special conference next year to address the problems.

“It has to be more transparent,” Bach said. “Everybody has to understand better who is doing what and who is responsible for what and this needs a full review.”

BOSTON – A day after walking all three Red Sox batters he faced, White Sox right-hander Zach Putnam was placed on the 15-day disabled list with ulnar neuritis in his right elbow, and right-hander Chris Beck was recalled from AAA Charlotte.

Putnam, 28, has been one of the Sox’ more reliable pitchers in the bullpen with a 1-0 record and 2.30 ERA and 30 strikeouts over 25 relief appearances.

He walked three in the ninth inning of a tie game Monday before being removed in favor of Zach Duke.

Manager Robin Ventura said Putnam’s injury isn’t what has prevented him from being unavailable during a couple of recent one-week stretches.

“This is a different thing than what we were protecting him from before,” Ventura said. “The days he wasn’t available before was something different.”

Kane staying in Chicago, not Buffalo, this summer

mlazerus@suntimes.com LAS VEGAS – Patrick Kane has a long list of things he wants to improve on after the best season if his career – his shot, his explosiveness, his agility.

And thanks to an extra seven weeks of summer following the Blackhawks’ firstround playoff exit, Kane is already a couple of weeks into his offseason training regimen.

And this year, he’s doing it in Chicago – at the team’s request.

Kane changed the narrative during the season, his brilliant on-ice play seizing the attention from his off-ice troubles, after a woman accused Kane of sexually assaulting her in his Western New York home in early August (Kane was not charged, and the Erie County district attorney emphatically dismissed the allegation). And the Hawks want it to stay that way. A source said the team wanted Kane to stay in Chicago for the summer, to keep his focus on hockey and to keep

him away from any potential trouble back home.

Kane – in Las Vegas for Wednesday’s NHL awards show, at which he’s a virtual lock to win the Hart Trophy as league MVP – didn’t get into specifics as to why he’s staying in Chicago rather than go back to the Buffalo area for the summer. And he also said he’ll still be “back and forth” between his two homes. The Hawks winger had no interest in talking about the investigation and the toll Patrick Kane it took, or the emotional roller coaster of the past 10 months.

Instead, he’s trying to make the most of his first long summer since 2012. His face shaved and his hair cut short, Kane wore a white polo shirt and looked noticeably stronger than he did at the end of another grueling season. Kane said that while on-ice work is fun and easy to get up for, the challenge is to find the motivation to put in time at the gym

during the offseason. He looked to LeBron James’ stirring performance in the NBA Finals as a motivating force.

“It’s been a lot of fun watching LeBron do what he did in the Finals, and you can kind of take motivation from that, too – how hard he’s worked and what he’s done in his career,” Kane said. “He’s a player, too, that has had a lot of critics and a lot of people that maybe you could call haters or whatever, and he’s silenced them. Can’t really talk about him anymore. It gives you motivation, for sure.”

Because of the police investigation into the allegation last August and September, Kane spent most of his summer off the ice. He’s hoping to benefit from the added rest this year, continued stability and chemistry with his linemates, and, as much as anything, a return to normalcy.

The still-palpable sting of the Game 7 loss in St. Louis is yet another motivating force, as well.

“It’s been a little frustrating to watch … because we believed we had a good team that could have made a run this year, too,” Kane said. “I got to spend a couple weeks on vacation, rest and unwind. You come back and teams are still playing, it’s kind of a weird feeling.

That’s something I’m sure a lot of us didn’t like. Hopefully we can get back there and compete again.”

The chicken soup you need now – Greek avgolemono

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 2 pounds), cut into very small chunks 2 ½ cups cooked white rice 4 large eggs 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley 3/4 cup frozen peas, thawed Kosher salt and ground black pepper

I have wanted to make this soup forever, and I have no idea what’s been stopping me.

Avgolemono is the chicken soup of Greece, and as we know, pretty much every country has its own version of a comforting chicken soup. In Greek, avgolemono means “egg lemon” – which is appropriate because the soup is built on a broth that is rich with eggs and deliciously bright and tangy with lemon juice.

While cooking the raw chicken in the simmering broth adds extra richness to the soup, you also could make the broth and simply add leftover cooked and shredded or chopped chicken. Just add about 6 cups shredded or diced cooked chicken along with the cooked rice.

When you gradually add the hot broth to the egg mixture, you are tempering the eggs. If you were to add the egg mixture to the pot all at once, even if you whisked very fast, you would end up with cooked strands of eggs punctuating the soup.

In some soups, this is desirable – think egg drop soup at a Chinese restaurant – but not in this one.

Adding the hot liquid in a slow steady stream to the eggs, while whisking all the while, thickens the eggs but keeps them from scrambling.

Once the mixture has become thick, smooth and warm, you can whisk it into the soup and it will simply thicken the whole pot of avgolemono. And deliciously so.

Start to finish: 40 minutes Servings: 8

1 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium yellow onion, chopped 8 cups (2 quarts) low-sodium chicken broth or stock

In a large soup pot or Dutch oven over medium, heat the oil.

Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes, or until slightly golden.

Add the broth, then increase the heat to high and bring to a simmer.

Reduce the heat to medium and, keeping the broth at a simmer, add the chicken. Cook for 5 minutes, or until the chicken is mostly cooked through. Add the cooked rice and stir well. Return to a gentle simmer.

In a medium bowl, beat the eggs until smooth, then beat in the lemon juice.

Working quickly, whisk the egg mixture while you drizzle in a ladleful of the hot broth from the pot. Drizzle in another ladleful, whisking all the while, then transfer the hot egg-lemon mixture back to the pot, whisking as you add it. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.

Stir in the parsley and peas, then return to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper, then serve hot.

Nutrition information per serving: 290 calories; 60 calories from fat (21 percent of total calories); 7 g fat (1.5 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 195 mg cholesterol; 760 mg sodium; 20 g carbohydrate; 1 g fiber; 3 g sugar; 33 g protein.

Farro, raw asparagus combine for hearty summer salad

Farro is a hearty whole grain that may well become a staple in your kitchen, in everything from soups and casseroles to side dishes and salads.

Once a mainstay of the ancient Roman diet, farro is high in fiber and a good source of iron and protein, which also makes it a great anchor for numerous vegetarian dishes.

Try using it in recipes where you ordinarily might reach for barley or brown rice.

Fresh herbs and other leafy greens in whole grain salads balance out the heft of the grains and also provide a lovely pop of color and freshness.

And I make these kinds of salads continuously during the warmer months, since they keep well, and having a whole grain salad in the fridge means you never have to wonder what to make for lunch on those days when you’re feeling unimaginative.

Don’t be shy with the salt and pepper – the seasonings really lift the flavor.

Finally, raw asparagus may seem surprising, but if the asparagus is very fresh it adds a wonderful, delicate flavor and a nice crunch.

If the outer peel is thick, peel the bottom half of the stalks before thinly slicing them, or the texture will be too tough.

Farro and Vegetable Salad Start to finish: 45 minutes Servings: 6

4 cups chicken or vegetable broth 1 ½ cups farro

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup minced shallots Juice of 1 lemon 1 cup roughly chopped flat-leaf parsley Coarse or kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste 1 cup halved grape or cherry tomatoes 2 cups roughly chopped watercress 2 cups thinly sliced raw asparagus, peeled if necessary 1 cup thinly sliced radishes

Combine the broth, farro and salt in a saucepan over high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to maintain a simmer and cook uncovered for 30 minutes or until al dente. Drain the farro if there is excess broth remaining, rinse with cool water and transfer to a large bowl.

Meanwhile, whisk together the oil, vinegar, shallots, lemon juice and parsley in a small bowl and season salt and pepper to taste. Add the tomatoes, watercress, asparagus and radishes to the farro.

Pour the dressing over the salad and toss to combine. Serve at room temperature or refrigerate and serve chilled.

SCHOOLS SHS Music Department ranked 5th in Illinois

Students learn about Southeast Asian culture Students in Northern Illinois University’s Southeast Asia Club visited Founders Elementary School in April.

This organization is made up of exchange students from Southeast Asia. Throughout the duration of their visit, club members taught Founders students about their culture and traditions.

2015-16 is school’s 6th year finishing in top 5 DAILY CHRONICLE

The Sycamore High School Music Department recently was awarded fifth place in the 2015-16 Illinois High School Association State ranking, while the Sycamore High School Orchestra placed third overall in state for Class A ranking.

This is the sixth straight year the Sycamore High School Music Department has placed in the top five in Class A, and its 11th straight top 10 finish.

This honor is the result of the combined effort from the band, choir and orchestra programs and their participation in the Solo/Ensemble Contest along with the Organizational Contest.

The IHSA Solo/Ensemble Festival was hosted by Harvard High School, where band, choir and orchestra students performed as soloists and in small groups. The IHSA Organizational Festival took place at Belvidere North High School in April. At this festival, larger ensembles such as orchestras, bands, jazz bands, choirs and jazz choirs all performed for ratings.

The Sycamore High School Symphonic Band, Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Treble Choir, Chamber Choir and Jazz Choir all received Division 1 Outstanding ratings, and the Concert Band and Concert Orchestra received Division 2 Excellent ratings. The scores from both of these festivals are tabulated by IHSA, and this result was strong enough to earn fifth place in state.

The high school bands are led by Ken Goodman, the orchestras are led by Ken Tonaki, the choral groups are led by Drayton Eggleson, and the entire Music Department is chaired by Scott Mertens.

The SHS Music Department has additional support from the Sycamore Music Boosters, a nonprofit volunteer organization that supports all students in grades K through 12. Information about the Sycamore Music Boosters can be found at www.sycamoremusicboosters.com.

Spanish students visit Cortland Elementary Spanish IV students from DeKalb High School visited Cortland Elementary School on May 17 to read books in Spanish and do follow-up activities with students in the bilingual kindergarten, first and second grade classes. The high schoolers like working with the young students who are fluent in Spanish and the younger children see how hard older students have to work in order to become bilingual.

Night-shift workers face health risks Dear Dr. K: I’m a nurse, and I can be assigned to work the day shift, evening shift or night shift. I hear shift workers can develop health problems. What is known about that?

Dear Reader: More than 9 million people in the United States are shift workers like you. Studies show almost 10 percent of night-shift workers have severe reactions to that schedule. Some become overwhelmingly sleepy during the night shift, when they need to be alert. Some have trouble concentrating and focusing on a task. Others can’t fall deeply asleep during the day, when they need to get some sleep.

There even are studies indicating nightshift workers have higher rates of developing obesity and Type 2 diabetes. People who aren’t night-shift workers, but who still sleep fewer than six hours per night, also have an increased risk for diabetes. So the risk of diabetes in night-shift workers simply might come from not getting enough deep, restorative sleep.

Studies that find associations between night-shift work and a disease such as diabetes don’t prove the night-shift work causes the diabetes. So colleagues of mine at Harvard Medical School tested that possibility directly. They built an underground living space and asked 21 people to live in it for six weeks. They were shut off from the outside world, with no clue as to when it was night or day. The scientists decided when it was bedtime, and the lights went off. They also decided on the timing and content of meals, and on how active the subjects in the study could be.

For the first three weeks, the scientists made nighttime in the underground space occur at the same time as night in the real world above. Then, they gradually made “night” shorter, and made it occur when it was really daytime in the world above. Fi-

During that middle period, when study participants slept less and had disrupted circadian rhythms, they developed higher blood sugar levels and started to gain weight.

Another health risk faced by night-shift workers is from driving home after work.

Several studies show they are more likely to have accidents. That’s particularly true if their drive home lasts longer than 30 minutes, which is true of about a third of shift workers. Other studies find about 20 percent of fatal auto accidents involve a drowsy driver.

To see if night-shift workers driving home were really “impaired” drivers, my colleagues did another experiment. They asked 16 night-shift workers to drive automobiles on a special test track. The workers wore a cap of electrodes that measured their brain waves, which can detect when someone is drowsy or actually falling asleep.

Each worker was tested twice: after seven hours of quality sleep and after a night shift.

After the night shift, brain waves revealed the workers were much sleepier.

Near-crashes occurred in 38 percent of the workers after the night shift – and in none of them after a good night’s sleep.

She also was afraid to report it.

Recently, she found out the girl has done the same thing to several other girls. They all went to the Title IX people on campus to file a complaint, but were told they won’t get any answers until late summer, which is after school is out.

Should she take it to the campus police or city police? Our daughter really likes her college, but she shouldn’t have to put up with this.

I wish you had revealed a little bit more about what happened when the assaults were reported. Was the aggressor counseled? Warned to stay away from the girls she had harassed? Removed from the dorm?

If nothing was done, I’m advising you to discuss this with a lawyer because a school that would ignore what happened might be liable.

In bridge articles, we often try to establish the truth by analyzing errors. Well, what error would often be made in this deal? South is in three no-trump, and West leads the spade queen.

The auctions have been short and sweet this week, today’s being the most common of all. (Some years ago, I was involved in two of the rarest sequences on back-to-back deals when the final contract on each was one club.)

South starts with seven top tricks: two spades, three hearts and two clubs. He can establish two more winners in diamonds, but risks losing the race if the defenders can first set up and run their spades.

South ducks the first trick, takes the second with dummy’s spade ace, and leads a diamond.

An East who is trained only to cover the last of touching honors, will play low. West can also duck the trick, but then South has two winning options: Lead another diamond, which would dislodge West’s entry; or play three rounds of clubs, which would establish a third winner there to go with two spades, three hearts and one diamond.

East should remember this key principle: In no-trump, when partner’s suit is one lead from being established, and you have only one card left in his suit, do your utmost to win the next defensive trick. East must play his diamond king at trick three. If South has the ace, the king is dead anyway. Here, though, when the king wins, East leads his last spade, and the contract is defeated.
