Property tax protests needed Last week, my colleagues at the Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake covered a protest staged by a McHenry man, in which he paid the first installment of his $11,470 tax bill with $1 bills.

He even threw in a symbolic “two cents” more than he owed to express his opinion.

We’ve reported before that people are leaving our state and property taxes are the No. 1 reason that they give when they’re asked why. They probably won’t like to hear this at DeKalb County Treasurer Christine Johnson’s office, but what we need is more protests of this sort. We need more attention paid to the property tax burden in Illinois and the affects it is having on our people – at least, those who haven’t already decided to move elsewhere.

Gov. Bruce Rauner made a property tax freeze part of his agenda for Illinois, and the response among some of our local school boards was fear. They can’t countenance a world where their tax take doesn’t increase every year.

But the fact is that they could figure it out.

There might have to be some sacrifice, but they could do it. Eventually, we’re going to need them to figure it out because more and more, people are deciding that the property tax

burden is too great for them to stay.

We’ve got to wake up to the fact that people already are voting with their feet and make a concerted effort to take some of the burden off the homeowner before it’s too late. That’s not just a job for Springfield politicians – property taxes are largely controlled by local people, your local school board member, City Council member or County Board member, among others.

I’m not sure exactly where the people paying their taxes with $1 bills are getting all the currency – pretty sure they’d have to hit up multiple banks – but it’s good to see them calling attention to the fact that Illinois homeowners are being taxed out of their homes and in some cases out of our state altogether.

CHEYENNE, Wyo.– A car has killed the only cub believed born this year to one of a handful of Grand Teton National Park grizzly bears popular with tourists and wildlife photographers for their habit of hanging out near roadsides with their young offspring.

The cub died after being hit Sunday night. A male born earlier this year, he probably belonged to a popular grizzly dubbed 399, but that won’t be known for sure until DNA test results come back, park spokesman Andrew White said Monday.

Earlier that night, a vehicle struck an adult

female black bear a few miles away. Park officials warned drivers to watch out – especially at dawn and dusk.

“It’s important to obey posted speed limits, maintain a safe following distance behind other vehicles, and be especially watchful around dawn and dusk when wildlife are more active,” Superintendent David Vela said in a release.

Park officials said they didn’t know who hit the bears or what the circumstances were because neither driver reported the collisions.

Grizzly 399 has delighted visitors and photographers for years. She’s had triplets three years in a row, but the aging sow is unlikely to have many more offspring.

Vigil held at NIU for victims of June 12 shooting

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Local members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer community remembered the victims of the Orlando, Florida, shooting in a vigil Monday that was as much a call to action as it was a memorial.

Dozens of people gathered on the lawn outside the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center on the Northern Illinois University campus to remember the 49 people killed and 53 wounded when a gunman opened fire June 12 inside a gay nightclub.

Several people wept at the vigil as each victim’s name was read aloud and a photo of them – affixed to a heart-shaped cutout – was raised.

“Something that this vigil showed is that the community will come out in the heat, in pain, and in struggle to really lift up, to support those who have passed away,” said Molly Holmes, director of the gender and sexuality resource center.

The killer, identified as Omar Mateen, sprayed patrons with bullets from an assault weapon he had legally purchased days before the massacre.

He died at the scene in a shootout with SWAT. The U.S.-born Muslim had previously been investigated by the FBI for possible links to terrorism, but the probe was dropped. The FBI reported after the shooting that Mateen pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terror organization.

The vigil participants called for an end to the racism, homophobia and anti-Islamic sentiments many of them said emerged after the shooting.

“We condemn this. We condemn hatred. Yes, we are different. We have different faith, but as humans we are brothers,” Handayani Lensi said at the vigil. The Indonesian-born Muslim, who gained her U.S. citizenship last year, spoke through tears as she addressed the crowd.

But, “Muslim folks have nothing to apologize for in this moment. And us forcing them to ... is an act of violence as well,” Romeo Jackson, 22, said after she spoke.

Also present were local civic, faith and elected leaders.

As participants called for more tolerance and respect, some elected officials said lawmakers also could

helpthe situation.

“People are in politics to make policy. We have to combat the hate, and we can combat it with love,” said DeKalb County Board Chairman Mark Pi-

etrowski, D-3rd District. “But we can also combat it with legislation and policy, moving forward, that can help try to stop these mass hateful killings.”

The public remembrances are expected to continue later this month.

Twelve local faith leaders have submitted an open letter to the community that they each signed, indicating that an interfaith event will be held at First Lutheran Church. “[The shooting] is a multilayered wound,” said the Rev. Linda Slabon, a minister at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship church in DeKalb, who also signed the letter.

“The Islamaphobia and the racism, and the wounds from our own faith communities, contribute to the violence and the gun violence in this country. And so we must come together as a community and reach across bridges that have frightened us before.”

Retired Sycamore deputy police chief welcomes successor

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The past 30 years of former Sycamore Deputy Police Chief Darrell Johnson’s work are preserved in a five-inch binder of articles and reports dating back to 1986.

Johnson retired May 20 from the Sycamore Police Department, where he rose through the ranks before landing his final position as the department’s deputy chief. He finished out his career with a $99,686 salary from the city.

In his time, Johnson worked gruesome home invasions, investigated “traumatizing” armed robberies, and was a member of the county’s first organized major crime task force.

Now, when he visits the building he had relatively unlimited access to for the past 30 years, he has to ask to be buzzed in.

“It’s weird waking up and not driving to the office and seeing the same faces I usually like seeing,” he said.

But Johnson’s face is one seemingly everyone in the community recognizes, and can’t help but stop and say hello to on their way through town, Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault said.

“Darrell embodies to me the true spirit of community policing.

It doesn’t take more than a walk around town with him to have everyone saying ‘hi’ to you ... ,” Theriault said at a June 6 Sycamore City Council meeting. “He gets to know everybody and polices from a community perspective.”

In Johnson’s stead, former Illinois State Police Lt. Col. Jim Winters has lent his hand in the investigation of a string of car burglaries. All the while, he stays busy getting to know his new partners and settling into the role of deputy chief.

“It’s been really good. It’s been a learning curve,” Winters said.

“Policing, at the core of it, it’s pretty much the same, but there’s nuances within each community.”

Johnson retired May 20 as the department’s deputy chief. even within a town of 17,534 people, Johnson said. Gone are the days of being armed only with a notebook and police badge. Johnson’s career has allowed him to witness the implementation of an Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the construction of an expanded and more technologically advanced station, and what is perhaps his proudest memory, serving as a member of a major crime task force.

“The comforting part of that is if something major happens in this county, other than calling the state police, which we do anyway, is that you have 25 to 30 experienced investigators to call instantly if a major case was to hit,” Johnson said.

Although he’s still unpacking filing folders into his desk drawer, Winters is no stranger to Sycamore.

Upon leaving the Illinois State Police, Winters spent an impressively

brief 12 hours in retirement before his first day as deputy chief.

“It’s nice being more involved in a community policing concept, instead of being scattered all over the place throughout the state,” Winters said.

“I live around here, which makes it all that much nicer that I’m kind of working in the community that I have an interest in – because this is where my family lives, and my kids have already gone through the schools.”

In the meantime, Johnson will spend his retirement finishing odd jobs that have fallen by the wayside over the years and repaying his wife of 31 years, Beth Johnson.

“When the kids were little, I’d be on call, we’d drive two vehicles to every family event, and I’ve missed events and birthdays and parties, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support.”

Chief Black Partridge Park was on the district’s list of parks to which accessibility would be improved. The new sidewalk will be installed on city property and tended by city maintenance, Gregory said.

Aside from fulfilling the district’s plan to improve the city’s connectivity to parks and trails, the sidewalk will act as a safety measure for pedestrians and bicyclists, Sycamore

Mayor Ken Mundy said.

“That’s a safety issue, too, because otherwise we’re crossing property maybe even close to the parking lot of the fire department, which can be an issue from time-to-time when calls are received,” Mundy said. “I’m very happy to keep folks in a safe way from Frantum Road right there all the way over to the fire department.”

A similar agreement will be put into effect later this year in order to allow the construction of a city bike path along Airport Road, city documents show.

MacArthur Justice Center: Ridulph murder case special prosecutor is not needed

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Chicago-based public interest law firm said a judge should deny the request of Charles Ridulph for a special prosecutor in the case of his sister’s 1957 murder.

Ridulph, the older brother of 7-yearold Maria, has asked that a special prosecutor be appointed to review the recently dismissed case against Jack McCullough. McCullough was convicted in 2012 of abducting Maria from near her Sycamore home and killing her.

The murder conviction was upheld on appeal. Judge William Brady agreed with DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack’s request to dismiss murder charges against McCullough, 76, in April.

The MacArthur Justice Center, a public interest law firm that is part of Northwestern University School of Law’s Bluhm Legal Clinic, filed a friend of the court brief in the case Monday. The brief claims Schmack has

no conflict of interest in the case and no special prosecutor is warranted.

“Mr. Ridulph disagrees with the State’s Attorney’s conclusion that Mr. McCullough is innocent and should not be prosecuted for murder in the Maria Ridulph case,” attorneys wrote in the brief. “However, requests grounded in the petitioner’s disagreement with the prosecutor’s exercise of discretion should not be granted. If the situation were otherwise, any interested person with a different view from the prosecution as to the facts or legal conclusions of a given case, or any person who differed with the politics of a prosecutor or with his ‘campaign promises’ could run to a court, claim bias or political motive, and have that court strip the prosecutor of all authority over a case.”

Jim Kaplan is a partner with Chicago-based Quarles & Brady LLP, the Chicago firm that filed the brief on behalf of the MacArthur Justice Center.

He said the center decided to file the brief because it was worried it could set a precedent. The center was behind

Daley. That case was different from the Ridulph case, Kaplan said.

“Any state’s attorney would think twice about indicting the nephew of the most powerful person in the county,” Kaplan said. “Here, we don’t see that. Mr. McCullough isn’t a powerful person.”

The center is worried that a decision in the Ridulph case could set a precedent that would expand the scope of the law.

“We think the principle is important,” Kaplan said. “The law is meant to remove elected officials for conflicts of interest, not for their opinions.”

Ridulph claimed in late May that Schmack made a promise during his 2012 campaign to drop murder charges against McCullough, and therefore created a conflict of interest. His attorney, Bruce Brandwein, said that he likely will ask Brady not to consider the center’s brief.

Schmack also has said a special prosecutor shouldn’t be appointed.

Brady is set to consider the request at a hearing today.

CHICAGO – Dennis Hastert’s attorney said the former U.S. House speaker will report to a federal prison in southeastern Minnesota this week to begin serving a 15-month sentence in his hush-money case.

Washington, D.C.-based attorney Thomas Green confirmed Monday in an email that the Illinois Republican will report to the Rochester Federal Medical Center.

Hastert has a Wednesday afternoon deadline to report.

Bill would create advisory council for Muslims

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois could become the first state in the U.S. with a law giving Muslim-Americans a formal voice in state government.

The Chicago Tribune reported that a bill approved by the Legislature would create a 21-member Illinois Muslim-American Advisory Council. It’s awaiting Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature. The governor’s office said he’s reviewing it.

Muslim leaders said it would send a welcoming message to Muslims. The governor and legislative leaders would appoint council members.

Kareem Irfan, a Chicago lawyer who led an earlier version of the council under Gov. Pat Quinn, said it would be good to have a lasting institutional body so the community is not subject to the whims of each governor.

LA Times owner Tribune changes name to Tronc

NEW YORK – Don’t call it Tribune anymore: The newspaper company has officially changed its name to Tronc.

The company behind the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune is shedding its name to rebrand as a high-tech journalism company as it tries to avoid being bought by USA Today owner Gannett Co. Tronc stands for Tribune online content, the company says.

The Chicago-based publisher also will get a new stock symbol.

Tronc Inc. began trading on the Nasdaq stock exchange Monday under the ticker symbol “TRNC.”

“He can’t be a 15-year-old kid,” Gibson-Posey said. “He loves basketball, but I won’t let him go out there (because) they are shooting up playgrounds. He’s miserable.”

Official: Group wants to sabotage Lucas Museum

CHICAGO – The head of the Chicago Park District said demands from a group suing to block “Star Wars” filmmaker George Lucas from building his museum on Chicago’s lakefront are “outrageous.”

Friends of the Parks released a memo recently outlining stipulations under which it would settle its lawsuit, including a legally binding promise from Chicago to protect the lakefront from development for the next century.

The memo said the group also wants 5 percent of museum revenues allocated to parks improvements.

Chicago Park District Board President Jesse Ruiz on Sunday accused the group of deliberately trying to sabotage the project.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Ruiz told the group in a letter that “attempts to demand money from the museum are nothing short of extortion.”

A severe heatwave ushered in the first day of summer Monday in the broiling Southwest, where extreme temperatures were blamed for at least five deaths over the weekend.

Towns along the Arizona-California border were getting the brunt of the extreme tempera-

tures on Monday.

In Palm Springs, the thermometer hit 121 degrees in the early afternoon. The temperature in Phoenix climbed past 111 degrees. A cool-off was expected in the coming days. The National Weather Service reported 17 daily heat records were broken in Southern California on Sunday – because of a high-pressure ridge over the Four Corners region of the Southwest.

NYC police officials charged in scandal

NEW YORK –Two high-ranking New York Police Department officers were arrested Monday on charges they took more than $100,000 worth of free flights, prostitutes, expensive meals and other bribes in exchange for providing a “private police force” for local businessmen.

Deputy Chief Michael Harrington, Deputy Inspector James Grant and a third defendant, Brooklyn businessman Jeremy Reichberg, were charged with conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud – the latest development in a series of overlapping public corruption investigations coordinated by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. David Villanueva, an NYPD sergeant assigned to the gun license bureau, was arrested on charges of conspiring to commit bribery.

Transcript: Gunman said he was an Islamic soldier The ASSOCIATED PRESS ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando gunman Omar Mateen identified himself as an Islamic soldier in calls with authorities during his rampage and demanded to a crisis negotiator that the U.S. “stop bombing Syria and Iraq,” according to transcripts released by the FBI on Monday.

The partial transcripts were of a 911 call made by Mateen and three conversations he had with the police crisis negotiators during the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history, in which 49 people died and dozens were wounded.

Those communications, along with Facebook posts and searches Mateen made around the time of the shootings, add to the public understanding of the final hours of Mateen’s life and to the possible motivations behind the rampage.

The first call came more than a half-hour after shots rang out, when Mateen told a 911 operator, “Praise be to God, and prayers as well as peace be upon the prophet of God,” he told the dispatcher, referring to God in Arabic.

“I let you know, I’m in Orlando and I did the shootings.”

During the 50-second call with a dispatcher, Mateen “made murderous statements in a “chilling, calm and deliberate manner,” Ronald Hopper, FBI assistant special agent in charge in Orlando, said during a news conference.

However, there is no evidence Mateen was directed by a foreign terrorist group, and he was radicalized domestically and on his own, Hopper said.

Mateen’s name and the groups and people to whom he pledged allegiance were initially omitted from the excerpt. But the Justice Department reversed course later Monday, providing a more complete transcript confirming Mateen pledged allegiance

The Justice Department said in a statement it initially withheld the names so as not to give extremists “a publicity platform for hateful propaganda,” but the omissions became an unnecessary distraction.

Shortly after the call with a 911 operator, Mateen had three conversations with crisis negotiators in which he identified himself as an Islamic soldier and told a negotiator to tell America to stop bombing Syria and Iraq. He said that was why he was “out here right now,” according to the excerpt.

City officials have refused to provide hundreds of 911 calls to The Associated Press and a coalition of news organizations, citing confidentiality under Florida law, and arguing that an ongoing investigation kept the tapes secret. Hopper also said Monday that the tapes would not be released out of respect for the victims.

“Yes, the audio was compelling, but to expose that now would be excruciatingly painful to exploit them in this way,” Hopper said.

Hopper also said: “Part of redacting is to not give credence to individuals who have done terrorist acts in the past.

They are not going to propagate their violent rhetoric.”

The AP and others requested the 911 tapes and related data, a common practice after such major events. The recordings could offer insight into how law enforcement responded.

Also at Monday’s news conference, Orlando Police Chief John Mina said that if any fire from responding officers hit victims at the club, gunman Mateen bears the responsibility. He wouldn’t give further details but said: “Here’s what I will tell you. Those killings are on the suspect, on the suspect alone in my mind.” He stressed that the officers “acted heroically.”

Mina acknowledged that questions have been raised by media outlets and the public about whether Orlando police waited too long after the start of the rampage at 2 a.m. to send in a SWAT team about 5 a.m.

He said an exchange of fire between police and Mateen shortly after 2 a.m. prompted the attacker to retreat into a bathroom and take hostages, shifting the incident from a shooting to a hostage-taking.

Divided Senate answers Orlando with gridlock on gun curbs The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – A divided Senate blocked rival election-year plans to curb guns on Monday, eight days after the horror of Orlando’s mass shooting intensified pressure on lawmakers to act but knotted them in gridlock anyway – even over restricting firearms for terrorists.

In largely party-line votes, rejected were one proposal from each side to keep extremists from acquiring guns and another shoring up the government’s existing system of required background checks for many firearms purchases.

With the chamber’s visitors’ galleries unusually crowded for a Monday evening – including people wearing

orange T-shirts saying #ENOUGH gun violence – each measure fell short of the 60 votes needed to progress.

Democrats called the GOP proposals unacceptably weak while Republicans said the Democratic plans were overly restrictive.

The stalemate underscored the pressure on each party to give little ground on the emotional gun issue going into November’s presidential and congressional elections. It also highlighted the potency of the National Rifle Association, which urged its huge and fiercely loyal membership to lobby senators to oppose the Democratic bills.

“Republicans say, ‘Hey look, we tried,’ ” said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. “And all the time,

their cheerleaders, the bosses at the NRA, are cheering them.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said the Orlando shootings – in which the FBI said the American-born gunman swore allegiance to a leader of the Islamic State group – show the best way to prevent attacks by extremists is to defeat such groups overseas.

“Look, no one wants terrorists to be able to buy guns or explosives,” McConnell said. He suggested Democrats were using the day’s votes “as an opportunity to push a partisan agenda or craft the next 30-second campaign ad,” while Republicans wanted “real solutions.”

That Monday’s four roll-call votes occurred at all was testament to the

political currents buffeting lawmakers after gunman Omar Mateen’s June 12 attack on a gay nightclub.

The 49 victims who died made it the largest mass shooting in recent U.S. history, topping the string of such incidents that have punctuated recent years.

The FBI said Matteen – a focus of two terror investigations that were dropped – described himself as an Islamic soldier in a 911 call during the shootings.

That let gun-control advocates add national security and the specter of terrorism to their arguments for firearms curbs, while relatives of victims of past mass shootings and others visiting lawmakers and watching debate from the visitors’ galleries.

GENEVA – Imagine the entire population of France uprooted from their homes, forced to flee danger, persecution or starvation. The U.N. refugee agency said more people than that – 65 million – were displaced worldwide at the end of last year, easily setting a new postwar record.

And it warned that European and other rich nations can expect the flow to continue if root causes aren’t addressed.

After a year when more than a million people arrived on European shores, UNHCR said Monday – World Refugee Day – that continued conflicts and persecution in places such as Syria and Afghanistan fueled a nearly 10 percent increase in the total number of refugees and internally displaced people in 2015.

“I hope that the message carried by those forcibly displaced reaches the leaderships: We need action, political action, to stop conflicts,” said Filippo Grandi, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. “The message that they have carried is: ‘If you don’t solve problems, problems will come to you.’ ” The Geneva-based agency’s latest Global Trends Report shows that for the first time since World War II, the 60 million mark was crossed.

“If these 65.3 million persons were a nation, they would make up the 21st largest in the world,” the report said.

In stark detail, UNHCR said that, on average, 24 people had been displaced every minute last year – or 34,000 people a day – up from six every minute in 2005. The total number of displaced

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan noted that displacement has been a “major challenge” throughout history but “humanity stands idly by as more than 65 million people escape from inhumane treatment and oppression today.”

“Governments whose policies aggravate humanitarian crises around the globe remain reluctant to lend their victims a helping hand,” Erdogan said.

“The international community has a political and moral obligation to restore the human dignity of refugees.”

UNHCR’s Grandi said policymakers and advocacy groups face daunting challenges in helping the largest subset of displaced people: Some 40.8 million living away from their homes within countries in conflict. Another 21.3 million are refugees and some 3.2 million more are seeking asylum.

More than a million people fled to Europe last year, causing a political crisis in the EU – with Greece and Italy facing the initial wave, Germany welcoming in hundreds of thousands, and some eastern European countries erecting barriers to block the flow.

Concerns about immigration have affected the debate in Britain about whether to remain in the European bloc in Thursday’s referendum.

This year, the flow of refugees into Europe has eased through the Turkeyto-Greece route that was the dominant thoroughfare last year. A recent EU-Turkey deal allows Greece to return Syrian asylum-seekers to Turkey without evaluation of their protection claims on the basis it is a “safe third country.”

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – As business picked up and space ran out, Kramer’s Kitchen and Bath made the move from their former Elm Street location to a larger, more open storefront in Sycamore’s old opera house.

The store will host an open house from 3 to 7 p.m. June 29, when customers can tour the shop’s 1,200-squarefoot space, stocked with cabinets and counter tops. The afternoon will include food and a raffle of hats, mugs and key chains, owner Kim Kramer said.

“We’re getting a little more walk-in traffic, which we were hoping and anticipating. I know a lot of people are just curious to see what’s going on,” Kramer said. “Even though I’ve been in business seven years one block away, a lot of people never heard of me.”

The new location means better visibility and a less-cramped shopping experience for customers, Kramer said.

Olson was invited to be part of a panel of internationally recognized experts in the treatment of neck pain, and the focus of his presentation was on treating patients with neck pain with mobility deficits using a combination of manual therapy techniques and specific therapeutic exercises. Olson also provided a hands-on instructional lab session in manual therapy techniques of the neck for Ken Olson the course participants at the meeting.

With more than 27 years of clinical experience combined with fellowship training in manual physical therapy, Olson has developed an international reputation as an expert clinician, educator and author in the examination and management of spinal and TMJ disorders. Olson is board certified in orthopaedic physical therapy and respected in the field of manual therapy of the spine.

‘Eternal Indian’ or ‘Black Hawk Down’?

If you’d like a “concrete” example of how the state budget impasse continues to wreak havoc, look no further than the Black Hawk Statue at Lowden State Park in Oregon.

The nearly yearlong budget stalemate means that state money can’t be released to pay for work to restore the 105-year-old concrete statue created by sculptor Lorado Taft on a bluff above the scenic Rock River.

We’re talking about a $350,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity that was supposed to help pay for the project, estimated to cost about $900,000.

Much of the money for statue restoration was raised privately, and most of those dollars have been spent.

The state grant is crucial to the successful completion of the statue restoration.

But the budget stalemate, which has now dragged out 352 days, has denied the necessary funding to patch the crumbling concrete, fill in the cracks, and properly preserve the striking 50-foot statue – an artistic gem and mainstay attraction for Oregon tourism.

In addition, a conflict arose between the project conservator and project engineer. This month, the conservator took down and hauled away the scaffolding and green mesh that protected the statue from further deterioration for the past 18 months.

So the venerable statue, its restoration incomplete because of the lack of state funds, is now exposed to the erosive effects of the elements. The elbows of the statue’s folded arms, the area beneath the arms, the middle of the robe, and a vertical fold in the robe are most in need of repair.

Chris Young, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, said the state hopes to have a new conservator under contract within eight to 10 weeks. We hope the restoration work can then resume with vigor.

Meanwhile, the rest of us remain exposed to the toxic political climate that has eroded myriad services and programs provided by state government and added to the state’s ballooning debt.

When Taft completed the statue, he named it “The Eternal Indian.” Its “eternal” aspect, unfortunately, might now be in jeopardy.

If further deterioration takes place, the landmark’s future moniker could well be “Black Hawk Down.”

That must never be allowed to happen.

Spring, Maryland, and the International Cultural Center (ICC) in Montgomery Village show nearly one-third of Muslim students have suffered verbal or physical abuse based on their faith. In the wake of Sunday’s attack in Orlando, Florida, concerns about backlash are greater than ever.

The surveys’ sample sizes are small; each included fewer than 200 participants. Still, the numbers – and the stories behind them – are disheartening. Muslim students said their non-Muslim peers have called them terrorists and accused them of disloyalty to the United States.

The problem extends beyond the Beltway: The MCC survey was modeled on a similar study conducted in California last year, which yielded

even more worrying results. There, more than half of respondents said they had been bullied over their religion. One girl’s high school yearbook replaced her name with “Isis.” In Florida last year, a French teacher referred to a 14-year-old Muslim student as a “raghead Taliban” and repeated the insult until the boy’s father complained to the school administration.

Certainly, as the MCC and the ICC recommend, schools should train teachers to make Muslim students comfortable in the classroom. Teachers should share the importance of sensitivity with their students, making clear that racist remarks are not acceptable and checking in with Muslim students who have been targeted.

But the disturbing standard Trump

has set will undermine constructive lessons learned in school. It doesn’t help that Republican leaders endorse the candidate, even as some condemn the worst of his statements.

On Tuesday, Trump claimed that American Muslims of all generations have failed to “assimilate” to U.S. life and culture. As Post reporter Jose A. DelReal has pointed out, data prove him wrong: Muslim Americans identify with this country as strongly as they do with their faith. But even as Muslim immigrants and their children embrace the United States, Trump labels them the enemy. Such racist rhetoric is an assault on our values, and – as this year’s surveys suggest – on our children.

Brexit causes elites angst – but Britain may quit EU anyway “Market Angst as U.K. Edges to Exit,” proclaims the headline on The Wall Street Journal’s lead story.

The exit referred to is Britain’s departure from the European Union, a move that will be mandated if a majority votes “leave” rather than “remain” in the national referendum next Thursday.

This outcome would be as astounding, to use the word Lincoln chose to describe the Civil War in his second inaugural address, to British and European financial markets and political insiders as Donald Trump’s victory for the Republican nomination has been to their American counterparts.

The most recent polls have shown “leave” gaining ground and leading “remain” among British voters. There is reason to be skeptical about British polls. Pollsters there (with one exception, who flinched and didn’t announce his results) totally missed the Conservative Party’s victory in the May 2015 general election.

But their big mistake, in retrospect, was oversampling young voters, who didn’t turn out in the numbers anticipated. That resulted in overstating the support for Labour. But in this election, the young tend to support “remain.” If they’re being oversampled now, “leave” is in a stronger position than current polling shows.

Johnson and Gove advocate an alternative for Britain, one advanced for America in these columns: a point system, to allow in only high-skill immigrants, as has been done so successfully in Australia and Canada.

Self-government also means getting away from EU over-regulation, symbolized by its dictates on the shape of bananas. The Continental tradition of France and Germany is that anything must be regulated before it is allowed.

The British common-law tradition is that things are allowed until the people’s representatives decide they must be regulated or banned.

In Britain in April, President Barack Obama called on Britons to vote “remain” and promised that if they didn’t the U.S. would leave them “in the back of the queue” in trade negotiations – a shameful stance toward a valiant ally.

Brexit is a choice for the British people, one we can live with and should respect whichever way they go.

When Donald Trump launches attack after attack on American Muslims, we’re confident he doesn’t speak for most of his countrymen. But there’s reason to worry that, whether Trump wins or loses, his poison will spread. A couple of recent surveys suggest that innocent Americans, including children, may be paying a price for his bigotry.

After being a major playmaker during the DeKalb football team’s march to the Class 6A quarterfinals, the junior switched over to be the main facilitator for the Barbs’ 25-win basketball team.

The talented and unselfish Tucker performed both to help each program to successful seasons and for that is the Daily Chronicle 2015-16 Male Athlete of the Year.

“It’s a little more exciting being the playmaker,” Tucker laughs. “In football, me and (quarterback) Derek (Kyler) were kind of the leaders of the team, and in basketball, I’d take a step back and let Luke (Davis) and Mike (Pollack) lead. You have to do what’s best for the team and me getting the ball to Luke and Mike helped us win a lot, instead of me going to the bucket a lot. I just felt it wasn’t that hard to move from playmaker to facilitator.”

After missing nearly all of his sophomore football season with a broken collarbone, Tucker burst onto the scene as a dynamic wide receiver for the Barbs, who finished 9-3 before falling to 49-21 to eventual state champion Montini Catholic.

During the season, Tucker finished with 55 catches for 1,037 yards and 16 touchdowns – including a pair of kick returns for scores.

Cole Tucker recently committed to playing football at NIU. ry, I saw a lot of upside that I knew he could be ready to live up to that level of expectations,” said DeKalb football coach Matt Weckler, who added he knew Tucker would have a special season after the Week 1 loss to Planfield North, in which the junior had seven catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

The magnum opus of the season for Tucker, who was the Daily Chronicle Offensive Football Player of the Year, came in the thrilling 31-28 victory over rival Sycamore. He had eight catches for 136 yards and three touchdowns, and added an 87-yard kickoff return for a score.

game I’ve ever played and probably the most exciting game I’ve ever been a part of,” Tucker said of the game in which DeKalb freshman kicker Connor Tierney made the game-winning field goal with four seconds left.

But after the Barbs’ season-ending loss to Montini came the adjustment.

After having just one day off, he was back on the basketball court – admitting that it was difficult to revamp his mind to hoops after recently having the talented football team knocked out of the playoffs.

However, in his first game of the year for the DeKalb basketball team, Tucker had a season-high 16 points to go with four steals and six assists in a

83-62 win over Foreman.

“There was not a lot of dropoff with him,” Barbs basketball coach Al Biancalana said. “He came into the basketball season ready to contribute at a high level.”

For the basketball team, which went 25-5, Tucker averaged nearly eight points and led the team in assists (1.6 per game) and minutes played, springboarding himself onto the Daily Chronicle Boys Basketball All-Region Team.

Both Weckler and Biancalana admit that there will be changes for Tucker as he approaches his senior seasons.

In football, the double teams – which started to come against Sycamore and Kaneland in the middle of the season – are likely there to stay next season and adjustments will be made. In basketball, with the graduation of Davis and Pollack, Biancalana said that Tucker will likely lead the Barbs offense as a senior point guard.

Tucker, who has committed to play for the Northern Illinois football team, knows the next football game he plays, he’ll be getting some well-deserved attention from the opposing defense.

“It feels good at first and then you realize you’re not going to get the ball probably,” Tucker said of the double teams. “It’s a little frustrating. The way I look at it, if they’re doubling me, they’re leaving one of our other playmakers all alone. If they’re keying on me, somebody else will make a play.”

Sam Hornish Jr. wins Xfinity race in Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa – Sam Hornish Jr. won three IndyCar championships and an Indianapolis 500 before fading into obscurity as a NASCAR driver.

Sunday’s victory in Iowa will undoubtedly rank among the most memorable moments of Hornish’s career.

Hornish, just six days after accepting an offer to race for the first time in 2016 in the vaunted No. 18 car for Joe Gibbs Racing, led 183 of 250 laps for a dominant win at the NASCAR Xfinity race at Iowa Speedway.

Hornish picked up his first win in two years, which also came at Iowa’s 0.875-mile oval. But Sunday was the first time Hornish’s three children were able to see him win, fittingly on Father’s Day. “I can’t tell you what this means to me. I worked so hard to try to get a win when I had my kids here,” Hornish said.

Hornish was briefly pushed by Ty Dillon and Brad Keselowski on a restart with 27 laps to go. But Hornish held onto the outside groove for his fourth career Xfinity series win.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – NASCAR driver Mike Wallace says he and his daughter were attacked after a Rascal Flatts concert in North Carolina.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police told local Mike media that three men Wallace have been arrested after the attack Friday night at the PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte.

Wallace said three men he had never met punched and kicked him and also attacked his daughter Lindsey.

Wallace says three front teeth were knocked a few inches into his mouth and he has a black eye that is causing impaired vision. He also said he had 10 stitches in his lip.

Police said 29-year-old Paul Lucas and 22-year-old Nathan Lucas of Indian Trail are charged with simple assault. Twenty-four-year-old Randolph Mangum of Monroe is charged with assault on a female. It was not clear whether they have attorneys.

Much of the race was reminiscent of the end of last week’s in Michigan, where Daniel Suarez held off the No. 18 – then driven by Kyle Busch – for his first career win.

Hornish and Suarez kept swapping the lead, with Suarez out front for 62 laps. But a caution following an incident between J.J. Yeley and Drew Herring drew a caution with just under 60 laps left, allowing the drivers on the lead lap to get what they needed from their pit crews for the finish.

Hornish had a strong pit stop and an equally strong push on the restart.

Hornish also held the lead on the last restart, and the last 10 laps or so were essentially victory laps for a driver who lost his Sprint Cup ride after notching just three top-10s last season.

“Sam did a great job of taking an excellent car and making, at least from my vantage point, no mistakes all day,” Keselowski said. “It shows how good of a driver he is and, of course, how great of a car that is.”

Jones won the pole position on Saturday, his sixth in 2016. But he, Keselowski and Sadler were forced to start from the back of the field after unapproved body modifications were discovered when the cars were moving to the grid.

Keselowski and Sadler eventually made up for it, with Sadler finishing sixth.

Cubs threaten in 9th, come up short

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Brandon Moss and Jhonny Peralta homered against John Lackey, and the St. Louis Cardinals stopped a five-game slide by holding off the Cubs for a 3-2 victory Monday night.

Aledmys Diaz added an RBI single and Jaime Garcia (5-6) pitched into the seventh inning as the Cardinals got back on track after their first winless homestand of at least two series since 1983. It was their first trip to Wrigley Field since they were eliminated by the Cubs in the NL Division Series last year.

Lackey settled down after a slow start, but Garcia and two relievers held the major league-leading Cubs in check. Lackey (7-3) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings in his first loss in three appearances this year against his former team.

The Cubs got two back in the bottom half when Bryant hit an RBI double and scored on Willson Contreras’ two-out single in his first major league start. The touted catcher was promoted from Triple-A Iowa on Friday and hit a two-run homer on the first pitch of his first at-bat in Sunday night’s 10-5 victory over the Pirates.

With Contreras on first, Garcia got Javier Baez to fly out to right to end the inning. The left-hander allowed six hits in 62/3 innings in just his second win in his past seven starts.

Fowler goes on DL as precautionary measure

The Cubs will be without their starting center fielder and lead-off hitter after Dexter Fowler was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a hamstring injury.

Fowler suffered the injury Saturday while running out a ground ball. General manager Jed Hoyer said Monday the move was precautionary. To fill Fowler’s roster spot, the Cubs called up relief pitcher C.J. Edwards from Triple-A Iowa.

“We don’t think it’s a long-term injury,” Hoyer said. “I hate to put timetables on this. But ultimately, we knew it was going to be something that would sideline him for at least the next handful of games, (a) week or so, and that’s the case.

“Playing shorthanded for what would be the significant part of a (disabled list) stint doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

Before Hoyer announced the move, manager Joe Maddon said he had discussions with Hoyer and president of baseball operations Theo Epstein about an “alternate back-up plan” if Fowler had to miss time.

Fowler has been a key cog in the leadoff spot. He has a .398 on-base percentage, which is tied for ninth best in the National League. After Maddon hit Chris Coghlan in the leadoff spot Sunday against the Pirates, he moved second baseman Ben Zobrist into the top spot for Monday’s series opener against the Cardinals.

Maddon said he likes Dexter Fowler the idea of Zobrist hitting behind Anthony Rizzo but knows he will have to be flexible with Fowler on the disabled list. “[Zobrist] is a super utility guy – anywhere on the field, anywhere in the batting order – he never complains,” Maddon said. “He just shows up, he plays and he’s already to go.”

La Stella, Soler improving: Tommy La Stella and Jorge Soler are both progressing as they continue to rehabilitate from hamstring injuries that landed both on the disabled list. La Stella and Soler worked with Cubs’ trainers in the outfield before Monday’s game. Maddon said he couldn’t allow Fowler’s injury to

impact how quickly La Stella and Soler return.

“We can’t really try to manipulate that – just let [Soler] get well and whenever he’s well (and) he’s ready to go, that’s fine,” Maddon said. “But I’m hearing that Tommy’s going to be better before Jorge is better.

“Jorge is on his own little pace right now.”

Youth movement: With the exception of 35-year-old Zobrist, all of the Cubs’ starting position players against the Cardinals are in their 20s. That includes a pair of 22-year-olds in Albert Almora Jr., who started in center, and shortstop Addison Russell. Catcher Willson Contreras, 24, made his first major league start after hitting a pinch-hit home run Sunday night in his first major league at-bat.

Maddon joked he should have started Matt Szczur, 26, and “just kept [Zobrist] out of it and then it would have been really interesting.”

The Cubs have nine players on their 25-man roster who are 26 or younger.

“You look at the young talent around the room and that’s pretty cool to see that happening, 23-year-old third baseman Kris Bryant said.

Hahn offered kudos for the way the Sox are prepared on a nightly basis but calling the results “extraordinarily frustrating form the last month-plus now,” played it down the middle before the Sox’ 3-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings at Fenway Park Monday when asked if Ventura’s job is safe.

“My answer to that is the same it’s been for the last few weeks in that, I don’t think it’s in anybody’s best interest for me to comment on the status of anybody in uniform – coach, manager, player – other than to say that on any given night, we’re doing everything in our power to support the group that’s here and to try to put them in the best position to win,’’ Hahn said.

“It’s the only thing we can control right now and that’s where our focus is.

GM Hahn: Shields’ issues are ‘fixable’

BOSTON – James Shields can be repaired and put back on the road again, general manager Rick Hahn believes.

The White Sox had better hope so.

After getting routed a third straight time as a member of the Sox after enduring a 10-run bombing over 22/3 innings in his final game with the San Diego Padres, Shields will go back to work at Fenway Park with pitching coach Don Cooper and try to get fixed.

“We believe the issues are fixable,” Hahn said Monday before the Sox opened a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox. “We believe they’re more mechanics based than they are the unprecedented evaporation of talent in a premier starter. We believe in James, this coaching staff to solve the issues we’ve seen in the near future. It needs to get solved and it needs to get solved quickly, but we believe this is fixable.”

cause Shields will face the hard-hitting Red Sox in the series finale Thursday.

Although the Shields deal, with the Padres eating a significant part of his remaining contract (the Sox owe him $5 million this season and $10 million in each of the next two years), was fairly well received as a good move for the Sox, the former All-Star’s coming to Chicago has left management with egg on its face.

So far, he has been a colossal bust, giving up seven runs over two innings against the Nationals in his Sox debut, seven runs over five innings against the Tigers in his second game and eight runs over 12/3 innings against the Indians on Saturday.

Instead of taking a load off an overworked bullpen, he has heaped nothing but overtime on Sox relievers.

“There were specific risks in acquiring James but even the most dire forecast would have predicted the performance we’ve seen the last few weeks,” Hahn said.

Shields’ fastball, cutter and changeup

haven’t been working like they used to, which has prompted him to use a curveball as well, but that pitch hasn’t baffled anyone, either. Pitching coach Don Cooper on Sunday simplified matters Sunday by saying throwing strikes will correct things.

“We’re working on him using his legs, riding [out on the back leg toward the plate] and staying behind and over the ball,’’ Cooper said. “Staying on his pitches, to drive the ball, get out front a little bit more, get more extension. That’s the difference we saw in the last film session, and that’s the only thing that’s there.”

The Sox dealt for Shields, 34, as not only a rotation piece for the rest of this season but for the next two as a right-handed complement to 20-something lefties Chris Sale, Jose Quintana and Carlos Rodon. They’re also keeping a spot warm for 2015 first-round draft pick right-hander Carson Fulmer.

At the time, the trade made sense for the Sox. Or so they thought.

BOSTON – Will Robin Ventura last the season?

The White Sox have played like a team that gets its manager fired, with 26 losses in their last 37 games after a 23-10 start. And if taken to a fan vote, a reasonable assumption could be made – if social media, talk show callers and even things heard from growingly grumpy crowds at U.S. Cellular Field are an indication – that Ventura would be let go.

For that matter, as the Sox’ fourweek tumble turned into five and now six, a growing number of fans want everyone in the organization exchanged for new blood, from Ventura to general manager Rick Hahn to vice president Ken Williams to an unrealistic hope chairman Jerry Reinsdorf will sell the team.

This isn’t a small, vocal minority talking. Off the plane but still sky-high, LeBron brings title home

The Associated Press CLEVELAND – LeBron James stepped off the plane and into a blizzard of red-and-gold confetti before hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy. It gleamed in the bright summer sun, a symbol of hope and history.

As promised, James brought home a championship, the one on hold the past 52 years.

“This is for you, Cleveland,” James shouted into a microphone.

The superstar, born and raised in nearby Akron, powered the Cavaliers to a never-seen-before comeback in the NBA Finals, bringing them back from a 3-1 deficit to stun the Golden State Warriors.

On Monday, more than 10,000 fans gathered at Hopkins International Airport welcomed James and his teammates, who made a pit stop in Las Vegas for late-night partying before completing this unlikeliest June journey.

The Cavs not only defied the odds to make history, but they ended Cleveland’s pro sports title drought stretching to 1964, when the Browns won an NFL title.

It’s been a surreal ride for Clevelanders and shortly after showing fans the trophy from afar, James, the fourtime league MVP, paraded it around the perimeter of the parking lot so fans behind the chain-linked fences could see they weren’t dreaming.

“I kept waking up during the night and saying, ‘Did we really win’?” said Diana Beetler of Oberlin, Ohio.

“I couldn’t believe it. I’ve never had a championship since I was born. We’ve been waiting years and years for this.”

She watched Sunday night’s game at home with family.

“I cried,” said Beetler’s 18-year-old daughter, Zoe. “Everybody cried.”

It seems the entire city choked up after James capped his MVP series with a sensational Game 7, a triple-double performance that will long be remembered for his chase-down block of Warriors forward Andre Iguodala in the final minutes – a rejection that seemed to erase so many bad memories in Cleveland.

James’ emotional reaction following the game seemed to strike a chord with everyone. He broke down crying several times, overwhelmed by the magnitude of what he had accomplished and what he knew it meant to Northeast Ohio.

“It was unbelievable,” said Indians manager Terry Francona, who helped the Boston Red Sox end their 86-year World Series dryspell.

Many of the fans who arrived at the vast I-X Center adjacent to the airport on Monday morning were going on little or no sleep following Sunday night’s riveting victory. The crowd was entertained by music and dancers before cheering replays of the final, frenetic minutes of Game 7 as if they were living them for the first time.

Cleveland’s furry mascot, Moondog, body surfed on the massive crowd, which continued to grow up until the moment the Cavs’ 757 jet pulled in about 12:40 p.m., welcomed under two crisscrossing water can-

nons and deafening cheers.

Cavs coach Tyronn Lue, who took over the team in late January, and several other players paused at the top gangway to film and absorb the wild scene below as fans let loose and sang Queen’s “We Are The Champions.”

Following star guard Kyrie Irving and a shirtless J.R. Smith, James was the last player to come through the plane’s door. When he lifted the trophy, Cleveland erupted as it did a few hours earlier after the 93-89 victory.

Later, James was greeted by hundreds of fans outside his home in Akron. Their passion and patience was rewarded when James emerged from his luxury van and spoke to the group.

“That championship wasn’t just for us. That championship last night was for everybody in Northeast Ohio,” James said, adding he hadn’t slept and

needed a long nap. “I always want you guys to remember that I’m just a kid from Akron, Ohio.”

The party in Cleveland will continue all week – and maybe beyond – with a downtown parade planned for Wednesday, a celebration few thought they would ever witness.

Former Cavaliers guard Austin Carr tried to convey a feeling he shared with so many Clevelanders.

“To finally win a championship, coming out on top, there’s no feeling like this in the world,” said Carr, the team’s first draft pick and now a broadcast analyst. “I’ve cried so much, I can’t stop. I’ve been walking on air.”

Moments later, Carr, known as Mr. Cavalier, couldn’t contain himself during a TV interview and sobbed.

“This,” he said, “means everything.”

Russian sports minister: Government not involved in doping The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHEBOKSARY, Russia – One day before an IOC summit to discuss Russia’s ban from Olympic track and field, Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko again insisted that the government played no role in doping.

Instead, Mutko heaped blame on former Moscow anti-doping laboratory director Grigory Rodchenkov, who Mutko called “the author of everything.”

“When the state is accused, then it’s always politics and unfortunately athletes become hostages of such political rulings and the pressure exerted on the country,” Mutko said Monday in comments to Russia’s Interfax news agency.

Since leaving his post last year amid allegations of a doping cover-up, Rod-

chenkov has told The New York Times that he sabotaged the anti-doping system at the 2014 Sochi Olympics by swapping tainted Russian samples for clean ones at the on-site laboratory.

Rodchenkov said he operated on instructions from the Sports Ministry, which denies the claim.

Russia was suspended by the IAAF from all international track and field competitions in November, and the ban was upheld Friday in a vote which appeared to have the backing of the International Olympic Committee.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has accused Mutko’s ministry of repeatedly failing to act on widespread doping, and in a new report last week said armed agents of the FSB security service had obstructed drug testers in recent

months. It also said that the Russian customs service was tampering with athletes’ samples on their way out of the country.

Mutko added that he expected little from Tuesday’s IOC summit. An IOC statement Saturday said the Olympic body “welcomes and supports the IAAF’s strong stance.”

“No decisions will be taken” at the IOC summit, Mutko said. “Tomorrow (Russian) athletics won’t be reinstated, I’m totally sure of that. There simply aren’t the people there who could do it.”

The Russian track federation is considering an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the IAAF ruling.

The head coach of the Russian track federation, Yuri Borzakovsky, said the

country had not yet given up on sending at least some of its athletes to Rio de Janeiro.

“We’re going to be following the (Olympic) selection criteria and living with a confident feeling that some will go to the Olympics, that they’ll let some of our athletes in,” he said.

Borzakovsky, a former Olympic 800-meter champion, added that if he were still competing, he would refuse the IAAF’s offer of neutral status and that pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva planned to do the same if she receives an offer.

“I can say as a former athlete, I would participate only under the flag of my country,” Borzakovsky told The Associated Press. “That’s why I fully support Yelena.”

OAKMONT, Pa.– Dustin Johnson already has shown he can take a punch. He also can take a joke.

Four months ago, he was playing the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in his regular pairing with Jordan Spieth, good friends and complete opposites.

Chiefs Berry wins PFWA award for overcoming adversity

Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry has won the George Halas Award for overcoming adversity to succeed.

The Professional Football Writers of America honored Berry on Monday. Berry, the AP’s Comeback Player of the Year, overcame a diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma in late 2014 to return to the field and have an All-Pro season in 2015.

The 47th Halas Award winner, Berry is the first member of the Chiefs to receive the honor.

He underwent six rounds of che-

motherapy treatment from Dec. 10, 2014 until May 13, 2015. Berry was declared cancer free last June 22, and he was on the field for the first training camp practice July 29.

Berry returned to the starting lineup in Week 2, was third on the team with 61 tackles (55 solo), and had a pair of interceptions.

Gauchos’ victory brings rare early exit for Miami at CWS

OMAHA, Neb. – As players and coaches celebrated their victory over Miami, a fan behind the UC Santa Barbara dugout held up a sign reading “Why Not UCSB.” With national seeds falling the way they have been at the College World Series, why not, indeed?

The Gauchos knocked No. 3 Miami out of the CWS with a 5-3 victory on Monday, getting strong pitching from Noah Davis and Kyle Nelson and the tiebreaking hit from a pinch hitter, Ryan Cumberland, who had just 21 previous at-bats and was sick to his stomach all day.

So, yes, a Gauchos team making its first appearance in Omaha did revel in its win a bit more than usual for a team that had survived an elimination game.

“It’s hard to act like you’ve done it before when you’ve never done it before,” coach Andrew Checketts said. “First program World Series win, and it sure looked like it.”

National seeds Florida, Miami and Texas Tech have gone a combined 0-4 so far in Omaha.

The Hurricanes (50-14) went 0-2 for only the second time in their 25 CWS appearances. Their other twoand-out was in 1979.

“We didn’t play as well as we could play,” Miami coach Jim Morris said.

“If we played as well as we could play and lost, I would understand more. We didn’t swing the bat the way I know we can swing it. We didn’t get the big hits we’ve been getting all year.”

The Stanley Cup-champion Pittsburgh Penguins open the 2016-17 NHL season at home on Oct. 13 against the Washington Capitals.

They’ll raise their fourth Cup banner to the rafters of Consol Energy Center against their rivals, whom they beat in the second round of the playoffs. The Penguins have eliminated the rival Capitals in each of their championship runs.

Four games mark the start of the season on Oct. 12: the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Ottawa Senators, the St. Louis Blues at the Blackhawks, the Calgary Flames at the Edmonton Oilers and the Los Angeles Kings at the Western Conference-champion San Jose Sharks.

Edmonton’s opener will be the first regular-season game at its new arena, Rogers Place.

The Kings will host the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 14 as part of the NHL’s commemoration of the 1967 expansion. The Kings, Flyers, Penguins, Blues and Dallas Stars are all celebrating their 50th seasons.

The season starts later because of the return of the World Cup of Hockey, which takes place Sept.

17-Oct. 1 in Toronto. The schedule will be more compressed than usual because of the World Cup and the bye week each team will have.

The rest of the schedule will be released Tuesday. It includes outdoor games in Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Toronto and Winnipeg.

“It’s so important to us to help you guys figure out what is coming,” Carroll said.

When the NFL did away with its rookie symposium in Canton, Ohio, it put the onus back on the teams to organize three days of rookie transition education after the completion of their minicamps and before players head off on their summer breaks. Seattle took it a step further, creating an education program that started following the completion of the Seahawks’ rookie minicamp the second week of May and will conclude with the mandatory three days this week.

The reason for such an extensive program: The Seahawks don’t believe three days is enough to adequately provide rookies with the information they need. It’s education the team provided in the past, but now in a more formal program.

Seattle’s program was opened to the media Monday and included a history lesson on the franchise and a panel discussion with former players Bryce Fisher, Jordan Babineaux, Marcus Trufant and Hall of Fame offensive tackle Walter Jones on the lessons learned and pitfalls to avoid as a young player entering the league.

Much of the conversation revolved around finances and the circle of friends and family suddenly looking for money.

28 Electronic skin patch may have many uses Dear Dr. K: I’m 54, and have had Type 1 “childhood” diabetes since I was 7. A friend with diabetes heard about a new skin patch that automatically keeps a person’s blood sugar in control – no finger-sticks to check blood sugar, no needles for getting insulin. Can that possibly be true?

Dear Reader: It’s not true yet, but I think it’s coming. I’m glad you asked the question, because what I’ll call “electronic skin patches” are starting to affect both medical care and research in many areas, not just diabetes.

I believe you heard about a study in mice that used an electronic patch. Before I discuss the study, a few basics about diabetes. (You know this, but some readers won’t.) Normally, when we eat a meal, sugar is absorbed into the blood. That sugar is a key source of energy needed by the cells of our body. But for the cells to be able to use the sugar to generate energy, the sugar has to be able to get inside the cell.

That’s where insulin comes in. Insulin is a natural chemical made by an organ in our belly, the pancreas. Insulin moves sugar from the blood into cells. The problem in Type 1 diabetes, like you have, is the pancreas stops making insulin.

That’s why you need to check the level of sugar in your blood frequently, and give yourself a shot of insulin when that sugar level is too high.

The patch you heard about does all of this automatically. It is very thin and sticks to the skin. The underside of the patch contains thousands of tiny needles – so tiny you can’t feel them. The tips of the needles rest in the fluid between the cells just beneath the skin and sense the

When used for 12 hours in mice, this patch worked like a charm: It accurately sensed sugar levels, released insulin when it was needed, and never allowed blood sugar to go either too high or too low. Would it have worked as well day in and day out? And would it work in humans? That remains to be seen. But it is an encouraging first step.

Scientists have created electronic skin patches that monitor other bodily functions. They accurately can measure electrical signals in the brain, heart and muscle. Many scientists are testing such patches to see if they might serve as early warning systems of things going wrong in the body. Might such patches detect potentially dangerous heart rhythms in people with heart disease? Or early spasms of breathing tubes in the lungs in people with asthma? By such early detection, early treatment might prevent serious illness.

My crystal ball says electronic skin patches are going to be used to monitor and treat disease. They also are going to be used in research, sending information continually and wirelessly through our smartphones to study computers for analysis. I find it exciting.

Dear Abby: I’m DEAR ABBY happily married to the man of my Jeanne dreams. We met Phillips after I had gone through a particularly difficult breakup, and I often credit him with “saving” me. We’ve been together 15 years and have two beautiful children.

While we both have professional careers, I also write romance novels as a hobby and side business. With every book authors write, a tiny part of their lives sneaks into their characters, storyline, etc. When my husband reads my novels, he becomes sullen and angry.
