Fire scares Los Angeles while larger blazes burn across West

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – A brush fire that broke out Sunday near downtown Los Angeles threatened a densely populated, hilly neighborhood along a freeway as sizzling temperatures elevated fire danger across the West.

Crews knocked down the blaze in the Silver Lake neighborhood after it damaged two homes, destroyed three shed-like structures, scorched yards and sent trees up in flames.

Neighbors scrambled with garden hoses and buckets, while water-dropping helicopters and scores of firefighters chased embers and doused steep hillsides to keep the flames from spreading.

The blaze only charred 8 acres, but it put urban residents on alert to the hot, dry conditions that have helped wildfires spread rapidly across more remote places from the California coast to New Mexico.

A fire that has burned 12 square miles west of Santa Barbara stayed in check, but firefighters braced for the return of afternoon and evening gusts that fanned the flames earlier in the week, threatening hundreds of homes and leading to evacuations of popular coastal campgrounds. The fire was just over halfway contained.

A new wildfire that broke out Sunday forced the evacuation of hundreds of a small town of about 600 people in the California desert near

the Mexico border.

It had surged to nearly 1.5 square miles amid triple-digit temperatures near the town of Potrero, which is just a few miles north of Tecate, Mexico, and about 40 miles southeast of San Diego.

In New Mexico, a 28-square-mile fire that erupted last week and destroyed 24 homes in the Manzano Mountains south of Albuquerque was largely uncontained. But higher humidity overnight allowed crews to strengthen lines around the fire and keep a lookout for hot spots where flames could jump the line.

In eastern Arizona, a fire that has burned 19 square miles southwest of Show Low advanced south, but containment increased to 40 percent.

The Los Angeles fire erupted near a freeway, with flames soaring up tall trees and sending heavy smoke across the road.

Paul Gaffner had been swimming at a pool a few minutes from his home and was planning to run errands when he saw heavy smoke near his house.

“Man, that fire is at my house,” he said he thought.

When he arrived, his neighbor was hosing down flames in his backyard. In his flip-flops and shorts, he joined the fight as neighbors chipped in help protect their houses.

“It was a lot going on,” Gaffner said as he handed out bottles of Gatorade to firefighters.

“You’ve got it in front of you, you don’t have time to panic.”

North Grove School holds open house of Sycamore one-room schoolhouse

Shaw Media correspondent SYCAMORE – Carole Lichty clearly remembers playing duck, duck, goose and sliding on wax paper down the slide during recess as a student at North Grove School, where she attended from 1947 to 1950.

The lifelong Sycamore resident is now a member of the North Grove School Association, which held the Old North Grove School Days open house Saturday and Sunday where community members toured the one-room schoolhouse at 26745 Brickville Road in Sycamore. Children in first through eighth grades attended the school from 1878 until it closed in 1952.

“I loved it here. When I had to go to another school I was devastated,” Lichty said. “I remember the teacher, Mrs. Clark, and she would start her lessons with the little ones and then move on to the older kids. I grew up here. It was my family.”

The building is owned by the Sycamore School District, but is leased to and maintained by the North Grove School Association. The school was built by the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church.

It was a parochial school and originally was used for Sunday school with all lessons taught in Swedish. The school was opened to the public in 1880, when the DeKalb County public school systems purchased it and English became the school’s official language.

Upon its 1952 closing, neighborhood residents used it for a community gathering center for many years, but eventually the school fell into a state of disrepair. It stayed that way until about 2007, when the newly re-formed North Grove School Association made the necessary repairs. The school was listed on the National Registry of Historical Places in 2012, and is the only remaining schoolhouse in DeKalb County that is still in its original location.

Alice Whitney, who is Lichty’s cousin, also attended North Grove School from 1946 to 1951. She said while she doesn’t remember too much, she does remember the teacher and playing outside during recess, among a few other things.

“I also remember going to the outhouse during the winter and reading Dick and Jane books,” she said. “I really liked it here, and I didn’t realize how much I liked it until I had to leave.”

the windows and the roof, added light fixtures and re-finished the floors. She believes preserving the building is important because it’s a part of the history of education.

“It’s always good to see where you’ve come from. It’s a unique part of DeKalb County history,” Wilson said about the school, which features old desks, chalkboards and maps.

Connie Hans of Sycamore was visiting the school for the first time. She described the building as very cool.

“I was surprised to learn more about its history, and about how long it was used for a school,” she said. “This is a good source of education for the county.

It’s a country school that served farming

communities. This is how they were educated.”

This also was Linda Heatley’s first time at North Grove School. She said she went to a one-room schoolhouse as a child in Wisconsin and she wanted to see if they were similar.

“I love it, and I love the historical value,” she said. “My school had the same desks, maps and floors.”

Bernice Maness, a Sycamore resident and a founding members of the association, said she is thrilled the school is now thriving.

“This is a part of history. Kids now don’t realize how primitive things were, and it really wasn’t that long ago,” she said. “This is a gem, and we need to take

care of it.”

The association is working with the Sycamore School District on incorporating the building into the curriculum.

Each year, fifth-graders from North Elementary School walk to the old building, where they have their lessons for the day before walking back.

Teresa Irving, president of North Grove School Association, said she’ d like to get more schools and other DeKalb County districts involved.

“We’d like for more schools to have field trips here so kids can see the basics and appreciate where they are now. Kids really do like it when they’re here,” she said. “This is almost in the same condition as it was when the kids left in 1952.”

Sycamore business donates table tennis table, memorial “It’s just part of remembering him as a business owner in Sycamore for all those years. We thought it would be nice to donate something to the park with his name on it.”

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A donation to the city’s park district has sparked friendly competition among parkgoers.

Twin brothers, Sam and Tom Doty of Doty and Sons Concrete, 1275 E. State St., Sycamore, donated a concrete, outdoor table tennis table of their own creation to the Park District. Attached to the table is a memorial plaque, commemorating their father, former Sycamore businessman Calvin Doty, who died in 2014.

“It’s just part of remembering him as a business owner in Sycamore for all those years,” Sam Doty said. “We thought it would be nice to donate something to the park with his name on it.”

Calvin Doty and his father, Lavern, started Doty & Son Concrete products in 1948. Throughout his life, Calvin Doty delivered mail for the Post Office, worked construction, and served as a medic in the United States Army.

A memorial scholarship fund was created in his name last year.

“The table not only adds a new, unique way to enjoy the park, it’s a work of art in itself with the District logo and memorial plaque on beautifully crafted concrete,” Superinten-

dent of Parks and Facilities Jeff Donahoe said in a news release.

Throughout the Summer Concert Series, the Park District will offer outdoor table tennis paddles and balls, available for checkout during the shows.

“It’s a good place for people to use it, and I know they were using it one of the first nights,” Sam Doty said.

Questions remain after 264+ pounds of cocaine seized in DeKalb County

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Federal and local officials have released little information about what likely is the largest cocaine seizure in DeKalb County history.

A U.S. Department of Homeland Security investigation led to the seizure of more than 264 pounds of cocaine and the arrest of four men believed to be involved in a drug trafficking ring.

Authorities seized the cocaine and $436,000 in cash Tuesday during an investigation in Esmond and another location in northern Illinois that

authorities did not name, according to a news release.

The street value of the drugs was estimated to be about $12 million.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said Friday that, to his knowledge, the 264 pounds of cocaine seized is the largest such drug bust in county history.

He also said it was safe to assume the drugs weren’t headed for the DeKalb County drug market. More than likely, he said, they were headed to a larger market elsewhere.

It’s not clear what will happen to the money that was seized. No civil forfeiture notice had been filed in DeKalb County Circuit Court as of Friday morning, according to court records.

Charges have been filed against Edgar E. M. Pena, 25, of La Grulla, Texas; Manuel A. Alvarez, 24, of Rio Grande City, Texas; Roger Gonzalez, 32, of Brownsville, Texas; and Jesus Cepeda, 29, of the 1000 block of Indian Avenue, Aurora.

The drugs were intercepted while being transported by semitrailer on Esmond Road, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said. But many questions remain unanswered.

Schmack would not say whether the men were together when the drugs were seized, why they were in Illinois, whether they had a connection to Esmond, whether police anticipated more arrests or where the second

drug seizure occurred.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also declined to comment further on the case, Public Affairs Officer Gail Montenegro said in an email Friday in response to questions from the Daily Chronicle.

Each of the four men is charged with controlled substance trafficking, a crime punishable by 30 to 60 years in prison.

They also face charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, punishable by 15 to 60 years in prison because of the amount of cocaine officers found, according to the news release.

Sycamore teens face charges after string of car burglaries DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Two Sycamore teens were arrested Friday in connection with a string of 25 car burglaries in the Reston Ponds and Parkside Estates subdivisions in Sycamore.

Riley R. Marko, 19, of the 100 block of East Reckitt Street, Sycamore, was charged with multiple counts of burglary to a motor vehicle and criminal trespass to a vehicle. A 17-year-old Sycamore boy also was charged with mul-

tiple counts of burglary to a motor vehicle and criminal trespass to a vehicle, according to a news release from the Sycamore Police Department. The boys Riley R. Marko were both arrested Friday afternoon at their Sycamore homes.

Police interviewed both teens after learning they might be connected to the burglaries during an unrelated investigation.

Police also located items taken during the burglaries, the release said.

In some cars, the teens cracked eggs inside or urinated inside the vehicles or on the owner’s belongings. Those items were then left behind, the release said.

Marko was released Saturday morning after posting $1,000 cash bond.

The 17-year-old was taken to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles. He will remain there pending a detention hearing on the charges, the release said.

“Hopefully, we can get multiple job requests a day, and expand to other subdivisions in the area, like Naperville, Schaumburg, places like that,” Glazier said.

Both boys will be seniors at Kaneland High School this coming fall, and have plans to attend Waubonsee Community College as business majors while they watch their app continue to grow and flourish.

“If it’s doing well, we’re going to keep working on it,” Obremski said.

KINGSTON – The Red Cross is helping a family of four that was displaced after an early-morning fire left their home uninhabitable.

Police and firefighters were called to 11525 Base Line Road, near Kingston, shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday for a house fire.

People living in the home heard popping sounds and found a fire on the porch on the north side of the house, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

They attempted to put out the fire with a hose. When the fire began to spread, they called 911. Firefighters from Genoa-Kingston, Kirkland, Sycamore, Cortland, DeKalb, Maple Park, Monroe Center, Lynn-ScottRock, Boone County, Malta and Marengo responded to the scene, according to the news release.

The Red Cross assisted the displaced family of four, police said.

Although an initial investigation pointed to an electrical issue, the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, State Fire Marshal and the Genoa-Kingston Fire Department, according to the release.

Daydreaming during class has paid off for Kaneland High School student Jake Obremski of Sugar Grove. The teen has designed a web app called Dablr.

For a $5 enrollment fee, Dablr is an online service intended to connect teens with odd jobs around their community, from lawn care to baby-sitting and pet care.

“I was just sitting in class one day and thought ‘What can I do to help kids my age make a little money, while still being able to do their extracurricular activities?’ ” Obremski said.

In order to make Dablr a reality, Obremski enlisted the help of his friend, Neil Glazier of Elburn. Together, the two developed the website, www. dablrservices.com. In total, it took six months to get Dablr up and running.

“You go on the site, click hire, fill out a form describing the job you want done, [your fee] and your number, and once the job is posted, an alert goes out the workers,” Glazier said of the site.

“We wanted to make it as simple as possible.”

With Dablr, teens can make extra cash with odd jobs around the community – jobs that work around their schedule so they do not have to sacrifice sports or any other extracurricular activities they may have.

In addition, Dablr allows community members to set their own price for everyday Jake Obremski work they either don’t have the time to do themselves or do not want to do.

Dablr officially launched June 1, and within 24 hours, three jobs were posted and filled, and $145 worth of work was created. Obremski said jobs were filled within 20 minutes of being posted. Before the official public launch, Obremski and Glazier signed up a few of their friends to do a test run of the app.

“People have loved it,” Obremski said. “We’ve been featured on [the] news, different magazines, we’ve gotten good Facebook responses and the workers love it, too.”

Airbnb regulation debate rages statewide

CHICAGO – Chicago and Airbnb have battled for months over the proposed tightening of short-term rental rules in the nation’s third largest city, but the debate has also quietly rippled out into some of the smaller communities across Illinois.

From creatively interpreting existing laws to near-bans on the burgeoning industry, the cities are finding their own ways to either generate new revenues or simply quell complaints about rowdy out-of-towners.

When a noisy Super Bowl house party at a rental in the tranquil Chicago suburb of Lincolnwood prompted neighborhood complaints last year, officials rewrote their laws to discourage rentals shorter than 30 days. Officials said they prioritized maintaining the character of the community of roughly 12,500 people over the potential tourist revenue short-term rentals might bring.

“I doubt people are coming in just to vacation in Lincolnwood, though I’d love it if that happened,” Village Manager Tim Wiberg said.

The online listing companies have focused their energy on fighting restrictions in Chicago, where the stakes are much higher and where city officials estimate there are roughly 6,000 rental units through sites like HomeAway and Airbnb.

Chicago’s push to regulate short-term rentals follows efforts in major cities including San Francisco. Chicago aldermen who want restrictions have said short-term rentals have created issues in some of the city’s livelier neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park, where partying visitors have created defacto hotels.

They described it as a threat to neighborhood identity and the long-term rental market, and hotel associations are concerned about dwindling revenues.

Trump says U.S. should mull profiling Muslims

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump suggested Sunday that the United States should “seriously” consider profiling Muslims inside the country as a terrorism-fighting tool, the latest example of the Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting increasingly backing positions that could single out a group based on their religion.

“We really have to look at profiling,” Trump said in an interview broadcast Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” ‘’It’s not the worst thing to do.”

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee added that he “hate(s) the concept of profiling, but we have to use common sense” over “political correctness.”

Trump’s proposal runs counter to Justice Department policy, which explicitly prohibits profiling on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity and national origin. That profiling ban applies not only to federal agents but also to local law enforcement officers who participate in federal task forces.

Trump’s increasing embrace of policies that could isolate Muslims in America is extraordinary for a candidate assured of his party’s presidential nomination. The proposals have been roundly dismissed and criticized by many Republican leaders, including House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Civil libertarians, Muslims and others also have strongly disagreed, arguing that profiling is unconstitutional and often constitutes unlawful discrimination based on race, religion and other factors.

Law enforcement should remain allied with groups that might have helpful information, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in an interview that aired Sunday.

Trump’s statements are consistent with his other, long-expressed views on how to stop terrorism in the United States, including a temporary ban on foreign Muslims from entering the country until the U.S. can figure out “what is going on.” But he’s intensified his approach since Omar Mateen carried out the worst mass shooting in modern American history on June 12 at a gay club in Orlando, Florida. Forty-nine people were killed in the attack, which stoked a mix of fears about terrorism, guns and violence against gays.

Mateen’s motive isn’t clear, but a letter from the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Republican Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, said Mateen wrote on Facebook that “real Muslims will never accept the filthy ways of the West.” He also pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, his ex-wife said he was mentally ill and his father suggested that gays had angered him.

Trump’s response to the tragedy was, in part, a pointed confrontation with Muslims, whom he singled out for know-

ing where terrorists are and not turning them into authorities. In the same speech, he also expanded his ban on Muslim immigration to include people from regions with a history of terrorism.

On Sunday, Trump also said the government should investigate mosques in the U.S. in much the same way the New York Police Department’s Demographics Unit spied on Muslims and mosques around the city with help from the CIA. The group assembled databases on where Muslims lived, shopped, worked and prayed, infiltrated Muslim student groups, put informants in mosques and monitored sermons, The Associated Press reported in 2011.

Under Mayor Bill de Blasio, the NYPD announced it had abandoned the program after lawsuits and complaints.

Americans are strikingly divided over whether to single out Muslim communities as part of a plan to fight terrorism, according to an APGfK poll conducted March 31 through April 4.

Forty-nine percent of respondents said they favor surveillance programs aimed at predominantly Muslim communities in the United States to obtain information about possible radicalization. Forty-seven percent of those surveyed opposed the practice.

Britain needs to vote to remain

The European Union is not popular just now. The EU’s median favorability rating in 10 major nations, encompassing 80 percent of its 508 million inhabitants, is a tepid 51 percent, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. This is not surprising, given the crises – economic, migratory and security-related – confronting Europe.

In the United Kingdom, the EU’s approval rating is an even lower 44 percent, even though Britain has opted out of Europe-wide institutions that euroskeptics most dislike - such as the common currency - and has negotiated other special exemptions from EU strictures. In this skeptical mood, British voters will go to the polls Thursday and choose whether to stay in the EU or begin a negotiated departure. “Brexit” would be the first such secession in EU history but, if successful, possibly not the last. The latest polls – taken before Thursday’s shocking assassination of Jo Cox, a pro-EU Labour Party member of Parliament, prompted a suspension of the referendum campaign – suggest British voters may well vote “leave.”

This would be contrary to the pleas of Prime Minister David Cameron, President Barack Obama and practically every elected leader across Europe. It would be contrary to the internationalist example set by Cox, a committed and thoughtful campaigner for the rights of refugees and supporter of a vigorous British response to the Syrian war that has forced so many to flee.

It also would be dangerous for the world, for Europe and, not least, for Britain.

We understand the populist impulse behind the Brexit surge. Brussels and its multiple officious agencies are remote; their ponderous processes offer no prompt resolution to the issues that worry Britons most, including a surge of immigrants via the borderless EU. That this impulse is understandable, however, does not make it any less, well, impulsive; there’s nothing particularly new, or particularly admirable, about the politics of anti-immigrant backlash. Any control Brexit would “take back,” to paraphrase the Leave campaign slogan, would be offset by increased economic uncertainty and political tension, to include conflict, potentially, with Scotland, which might rethink its recent vote to remain in the U.K. rather than join a flight from Europe. Brexiteers promise a boom born of deregulation; practical people grasp that Britain’s global financial center and export economy require regulation and standard-setting, including some that will inevitably be carried out multilaterally.

For all its defects, the European Union is still a force for comity and commerce among the peoples of the continent, and a multiplier of their power and influence on the world stage. The EU is a strong partner with the United States, especially so when it includes Britain’s economy, the world’s fifth largest, and its military, the fifth most powerful. Come Thursday, we hope the British people will vote accordingly.

There are encouraging signs that Americans are more honorable, rational and resilient than that.

Following Trump’s rancid repetitions of his earlier call for a ban on Muslim immigration and his insistence that the president comprises a fifth column (and that came after a week of racist rants against a Latino federal judge, Gonzalo Curiel), Trump’s unfavorable ratings have soared and Clinton has gained support. A Washington Post/ABC News poll conducted in the immediate aftermath of the Orlando massacre shows that 70 percent of voters view Trump unfavorably, an unprecedented unpopularity for a presumptive nominee. Clinton no doubt takes comfort in that – as do I. Many mainstream, middle-of-theroad voters know they ought to reject

Trump, but that doesn’t mean they will. That’s especially true because of the nature of the threat presented by homegrown lone wolves, people who are born in this country and who present themselves to most observers as law-abiding and patriotic.

Clinton will have to find a campaign footing that is more anchored in voters’ concerns about national security than her Democratic primary campaign was; in response to a sharp challenge from Sen. Bernie Sanders, she focused largely on economic issues.

Obama hasn’t done that as well as he might have. The president has done much to improve actual security; he not only sent U.S. Navy SEALs after Osama bin Laden, he has also commanded a drone program that has killed far more terrorists than his predecessor did. But Obama, a committed rationalist, has eschewed the role of Daddy-in-Chief – the fierce protector who makes his charges feel safe by attending to their emotional needs. He believes that American adults ought to know better than to freak out over remote risks. Yet, it is part of his job as a politician to consider his constituents’ feelings, including those that are not

entirely rational.

(In his defense, Obama remembers that the invasion of Iraq was driven, in large part, by the irrational fears and outsized anger that followed 9/11, when the pursuit of bin Laden was abandoned for the pursuit of Saddam Hussein.

Never mind that Saddam was no holy warrior or fan of al-Qaida. He was Arab and, therefore, suspect. The consequences of George W. Bush’s decision to depose Saddam live on in the widespread destabilization of the Middle East and the rise, ironically, of ISIS.) Still, Clinton might take a lesson from Obama’s latest rebuke of her rival.

In a speech a few days after the Orlando attack, the president – clearly upset by Trump’s outrageous assaults on American values – abandoned his customary reserve to denounce Islamophobia, reiterate his commitment to fighting terrorism, and brilliantly defend diversity, pluralism and freedom of religion.

The American public will clearly stand behind strong and right.

Debunking five major myths about video games and its culture

For decades, video games have mystified people who don’t play them.

The New York Times Magazine grappled in 1974 with the emergence of the arcade game – calling it “the space age pinball machine” – in Manhattan bars. What was this new coin-operated amusement? If not a kind of pinball, was it some sort of newfangled jukebox?

Electronic foosball? How much money was it making? Was it addictive? Could it help sick people? Train air-traffic controllers? More than 40 years later, many of these questions are still with us. And some durable myths remain extremely difficult to dispel.

1. Pong was the first video game.

Despite numerous debunkings, the idea that Pong was first persists. A headline in Vanity Fair illustrates this common misconception: “The Origins of the First Arcade Video Game: Atari’s Pong.”

Pong was a huge commercial success, one that helped turn a nascent medium into mass entertainment. But it wasn’t the first arcade game, nor was it the first home video game that you could hook up to your TV. Like any medium, video games have

many antecedents. Most experts point to William Higinbotham’s Tennis for Two, a demonstration created for an open house at Long Island’s Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1958, as the first true video game.

2. Video games are bigger than movies.

Since the early 1980s, people have speculated that the popularity of interactive entertainment was hurting ticket sales at movie theaters.

It’s true that Americans spent almost $24 billion on video games last year, compared with a measly $11 billion on movie tickets. But the theatrical box office is not even close to the entire revenue stream for “movies” or “Hollywood.” Americans spent an additional $18 billion on home entertainment such as Blu-rays, DVDs, iTunes and Netflix.

More important, dollars aren’t people. Here’s some rough math: When Grand Theft Auto V makes $1 billion, it’s because 20 million people, give or take, have bought the game. When “The Force Awakens” makes $1 billion, it’s because 100 million tickets were sold, more or less.

3. They’re for men.

According to a Pew Research Center survey published in December, 60 percent of Americans believe that “most

people who play video games are men.”

Top-selling games such as Call of Duty and Madden NFL tend to be marketed to men, and almost three times as many men describe themselves as “gamers” (15 percent of men compared with 6 percent of women).

The latest data from the Entertainment Software Association, the lobbying arm of the video-game industry, does indicate that the majority of players – 60 percent – are men.

4. Violent video games are a cause of real-world violence.

In the wake of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School, video games were blamed for helping to numb the shooters to the consequences of their actions. Yet these allegations are much older than the age of mass violence: In the 1970s, journalists fretted about an arcade game called Death Race, and in 1982, “The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour” hosted a debate on PBS over whether games like Space Invaders were too violent and taught children not to respect the value of human (not merely alien) life.

These concerns aren’t baseless.

A review of the scientific literature, conducted by an American Psychological Association task force, found a “well established” link between violent

video games and short-term increases in aggression.

But many scholars dispute these findings, saying that at best they indicate an effect on thoughts rather than actions, and at worst merely prove that looking at an image of an explosion makes you think about explosions.

5. They’re making us smarter.

And they might not be wrong.

“Action games” – mostly first-person shooters – have been found in a number of studies to improve hand-eye coordination and spatial thinking. More surprising, these games can improve vision, increase attention and make players more efficient at mental task-switching, even when they’re not playing the games.

But only some video games have these effects. Playing chess – whether on a physical board or a screen – doesn’t confer any of these benefits. Nor does playing some of the most popular video games, including the slower-paced Candy Crush Saga, Angry Birds, the Sims, Minecraft or even Tetris. Some sports, driving and adventure games might be considered “action games,” but the research has emphasized the benefits of shooters, which are more perceptually demanding.

Donald Trump has a canny, gut-level appreciation for the power of fear, as he has shown through his reckless and noxious tactics since the terrorist atrocity in an Orlando nightclub that left 50 people, including the accused terrorist, dead. Trump has hurled about the most vile and mendacious charges, suggesting, with barely a wink, that President Barack Obama is in league with Islamist terrorists. He has congratulated himself for his smears against Muslims. He has reveled in rejecting basic American values and constitutional restraints.

Rockin’ for the Reptiles coming up DAILY CHRONICLE Get ready to rock for the Midwest Museum of Natural History’s Rockin’ for the Reptiles.

This outdoor family-friendly event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Somonauk and Elm streets in downtown Sycamore. It will feature live music performed by Jazz in Progress and Garage Orchestra, food and desserts from Sanchez Food Cart, a bounce house, crafts, free games and prizes, and of course, life reptiles.

The Chicago Herpetological Society and Friends of Scales will bring a number of scaled friends to visit. Attendees can get hands-on while learning about what makes a reptile special. The museum’s fan favorites will stop by for a

picture in the selfie booth, where attendees can enter their selfie into a contest to win prizes including a free birthday party or giant plush tortoise.

Rockin’ for the Reptiles costs $8 per person, which includes admission to the Midwest Museum for the whole day with a Rockin’ wristband.

Proceeds from this event go toward taking care of the 30 live animals housed at the museum and creating educational programming around them. Every year, the museum welcomes approximately 1,500 students on field trips and special programs who learn from interacting with these live animals.

Thousands of cyclists will gather for Bike MS: Tour de Farms on June 25 and 26 at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Bike MS is the largest charity bike ride in Illinois and brings together cyclists of all skill levels for an unforgettable weekend of achievement, fellowship and fun.

This year, the event will celebrate its 35th anniversary and will feature new and enhanced event experiences. All funds raised go toward a world free of multiple sclerosis.

Cyclists will ride along the scenic farmlands of northern Illinois as they bike anywhere from 15 to 200 miles through the two-day event on 10 fully supported routes.

Twenty support-and-gear vehicles stocked with first aid and repair supplies will continuously patrol the route.

The ride will have rest stops every 10 to 15 miles, with some of them offering unique experiences, such as a family farm to meet and pet animals, and eating a famous Tour de Farms fried egg burger. As a fundraising event, riders are required to raise a minimum of $300 to participate, with proceeds going to support critical research and services for those living with MS. Children age 11 and younger also can participate in a special course exclusively for junior riders at NIU on Saturday, June 25.

In addition to the actual ride, the weekend will feature live music and a beer garden outside the

Convocation Center. Saturday’s festivities include musical entertainment from local bands playing throughout the day and evening, and an awards ceremony at 5 p.m.

Once again this year, Genzyme, a Sanofi Company, is sponsoring I Ride with MS, a mission-based program that celebrates participating cyclists who are living with MS through MS One to One. Through the program, cyclists who are living with MS are provided a special “I Ride with MS” jersey. By providing visibility to riders living with MS, the program personalizes the disease and more strongly connects all cyclists, serving as a reminder of why they participate in Bike MS. Participants can pick up their rider packets and set up for the event during the Bike MS kickoff from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 24.

Rider registration opens at 5 a.m. each day of the actual event, and the mass start takes place at 7 a.m.

The registration fee is $80.

Last year, more than 1,800 riders participated in Bike MS: Tour de Farms, raising more than $1.5 million. The Illinois Bike MS event is one of more than 80 rides that happen across the U.S. to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Collectively, the rides raise close to $90 million annually with more than 100,000 cyclists.

Residents can get up close and personal with archaeology in their own back yard when Glidden Homestead hosts a program on archaeology and the current site excavation at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Eli Orrvar, master’s candidate at Northern Illinois University and project leader of the excavation at the Glidden Barbed Wire Barn, will give a lecture about archaeology, what it is and how it is done, followed by a question-and-answer portion in the Glidden Barn where the excavation is taking place.

Glidden’s brick barn can be considered the monument for the invention of barbed wire, a symbol of innovation in the Midwest, the workshop of an iconic inventor.

Fun activities for kids to learn about archaeology will be included that day.

Sycamore’s Ella Holland is the 2016 Daily Chronicle Girls Soccer Player of the Year. the team’s offensive firepower is coming back.

At the center of that firepower is Holland, the main distributor for the team at center midfield, a speedy presence who has a knack for getting behind the opposing team’s defense and finding other open attackers with precision passes.

“Being in the spot she is, she kind of needs to be the hub of the wheel,” coach Dave Lichamer said. “She is the one that needs to work sideline to sideline, and she does – winning the ball, pressuring the ball and distributing from there.”

SYCAMORE – Ella Holland’s career resume with the Sycamore soccer team is impressive – 30 assists and 45 goals, not to mention helping the Spartans take third in the Class 2A state tournament this season.

Also impressive, however, is the fact she still has two more years left to add to those totals.

Holland scored 24 goals and had 14 assists this past season and was named the Daily Chronicle Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

“I did not expect we’d go this far, but it’s a great surprise,” Holland said. “It just all came together and we all just really meshed.”

This past year may have just been the start for Holland and the Spartans.

The team featured only four seniors, all of them defenders – they totaled only two goals and three assists, so most of

Saydie Holland – by just one. She did lead the team in assists.

With the team so young, Ella Holland said the playoff run was an educational experience as she and the team hope the success of this season wasn’t a one-off performance.

In addition to the third-place game – the Spartans were down 1-0 against St. Francis before coming back and winning with a goal in the closing minutes – the team came from behind in a supersectional game against Geneseo.

“I guess you could say we’re never out of it,” Holland said. “Because with Geneseo, we were winning by one than they came back. Then we also came back, so it shows you can come back if you don’t give up.”

Holland said she expects the team to progress next year.

“We do have a young team, so we’ll be good next year, I hope,” she said. “The incoming eighth-graders are supposed to be very good too, so that’s strong too.”

Just as she expects the team to improve, Lichamer said he expects another leap from Holland.

“What she did this year, especially considering some of the talent we played against and whatnot, shows she’s continuing to grow,” he said. “You haven’t seen her best yet, I’m sure.”

Sinking Sox find another way to lose

CLEVELAND – The beat, and the beatings, go on for the White Sox. In walk-off or blowout fashion, they find different ways to lose almost every day.

One day the starting pitcher gets pummeled. The next day the starter is good, but a defensive play that needs to be made isn’t for the closer in the 10th.

Another day a relief pitcher shakes off his catcher and serves up a walk-off home run pitch.

All of the above transpired in a crushing series sweep delivered by the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians, who completed it Sunday with a 3-2 win in the 10th inning on Jose Ramirez’s bases-loaded single past first baseman Jose Abreu.

With two outs – after Friday’s walkoff hero Carlos Santana fouled out – closer David Robertson (0-1, 3.95 ERA) got Ramirez to hit what looked like an inning-ending two-hopper. But Abreu, on a ball hit slightly to his right, leaned back and reached up as the ball skipped through to end the game.

“It just looked like it took a big hop,” said manager Robin Ventura, who had pulled out all the stops by ordering two

Abreu, speaking through translator Billy Russo, said the second hop went farther than he expected, “and my only alternative was to try to lunge back. It was a very tough play.”

“If I could have blocked the ball, I would do it. I didn’t have any chance to do it.”

Of course, a clean play only would have extended the game to the 11th inning, and the way the Sox aren’t hitting (23 runs in the last nine road games), it may have simply delayed the inevitable.

The Sox had six hits, and only three after Abreu’s RBI double scored Tim Anderson in the first and Melky Cabrera’s home run in the fourth against Carlos Carrasco. Abreu left runners in scoring position twice.

“It’s tough but we have to find a way to score more runs, because we are wasting some very good games,” Abreu said.

The Sox got their second good start of the series, this one by left-hander Carlos Rodon, who allowed two runs and struck out eight over 61/3 innings. Left fielder Melky Cabrera threw out Francisco Lindor at third and second baseman Brett Lawrie made diving stops in the eighth and ninth innings, the latter preventing Michael Martinez from enjoying a walkoff single.

“We come out every day and give it all we got,” Rodon said. “Brett’s out there making diving plays, saving the game. It’s just not going our way right now. Hope we can get out of this funk.”

Contreras homers in 1st at-bat; Cubs finish sweep

CHICAGO – Prized prospect Willson Contreras crushed the first pitch he saw in the major leagues for a tworun home run, Kyle Hendricks struck out a career-high 12 in six innings and the Cubs completed a sweep of the fading Pittsburgh Pirates with a 10-5 victory Sunday night.

Contreras, called up from Triple-A on Friday, pinch hit for Hendricks in the sixth and sent A.J. Schugel’s changeup an estimated 415 feet to center.

The cheering crowd didn’t let up until the 24-year-old Venezuelan catcher obliged with a curtain call.

Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo hit consecutive home runs in the third and Javier Baez added a solo shot for the Cubs, all off rookie Jameson Taillon (1-1). Addison Russell hit a two-run shot in the seventh for the Cubs, who have eight homers in two games.

Josh Harrison’s solo home run was the lone blemish off Hendricks (5-6),

who walked none and allowed seven hits.

Starling Marte returned from injury and had a two-run triple off Adam Warren in a three-run seventh for the Pirates, who have lost 17 of 22 and fell 15 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central.

The Cubs’ division lead jumped to 12½ games over St. Louis with Contreras providing the latest feel-good story.

He arrived from Iowa on Friday and played one inning of defense. Manager Joe Maddon announced before the game that Contreras would get his first start at catcher Monday.

Rizzo added two RBI singles for the Cubs, who completed their seventh series sweep of the season.

The Cubs jumped on Taillon after the rookie took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in a victory Tuesday against the New York Mets.

Sei Young Kim wins Meijer LPGA Classic on first playoff hole

BELMONT, Mich. – Sei Young Kim won the Meijer LPGA Classic on Sunday for her second victory of the year, beating Carlota Ciganda with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff.

After bogeying the 18th in regulation to drop into the playoff, the 23-year-old Kim rebounded on the par-4 hole in the playoff.

“I just angry on myself,” Kim said. “I just, ‘Oh, I have to bounce back because today before I play, I setting my goal no bogey play.’ But last one I missed with bogey. If I bounce back, yeah, it is a good work, so I did it well today.”

On the extra hole, the South Korean player hit a 124-yard shot from the deep left rough – so deep that she momentarily lost her ball after looking away – that ran onto the green and settled at 3½ feet.

“I realize really a lot of release, so I try to (hit) before the 10 meter to the front,” said Kim, projected to remain fifth in the world ranking. “It was good and I hit great hit. And my ball position was a little settled down, so I tried a cut shot. It was a, yeah, good work.”

She finished with a 3-under 68 at Blythefield to match Ciganda at 17-under 267.

TCU beats Texas Tech at CWS on Baker’s 9th-inning homer

OMAHA, Neb. – When Luken Baker came up to bat in the ninth inning, the TCU dugout fell silent.

That changed in the amount of time it took the 6-foot-4, 265-pounder to hammer his bat into Robert Dugger’s fastball and send it just inside the left-field foul

Johnson wins Open Cavs end 52-year title for first major title drought in Cleveland The ASSOCIATED PRESS

OAKMONT, Pa. – Dustin Johnson settled the score Sunday in the U.S. Open.

Johnson atoned for his past mishaps in the majors by showing he had the smarts to handle the toughest test in golf, even while playing the final two hours without knowing where he stood when the USGA questioned whether he should be penalized one stroke for his ball moving on the fifth green.

Johnson said it didn’t. The USGA said it would wait until after the round to decide. America’s most powerful golfer took matters into his own hands at Oakmont, capping off a chaotic and confusing final round by stuffing his approach into 5 feet for a birdie that made the penalty a moot point.

The USGA ended up penalizing him, turning that 68 into a 1-under 69. The score was irrelevant. He won by three shots.

Finally, he’s a major champion.

Johnson scooped up 18-month-old son Tatum into his arms on Father’s Day and raised the silver trophy for all to see.

“I’ve been here a bunch of times and haven’t quite got it done,” Johnson said.

“But today, I did. And it feels really good.”

He saluted a Pittsburgh crowd that was on his side even amid all the uncertainty. The grandstands were raucous, with one fan shouting, “What’s the call, USGA?” At the trophy presentation, when Fox Sports announcer Joe Buck brought up the penalty situation, the crowd booed.

“I just tried to focus on what I was doing, not worrying about the penalty stroke,” Johnson said. “Just playing golf from here to the house.”

He slammed the door at the end – a 10foot par save on the 16th hole to keep his lead at two shots, a solid par on the 17th as Shane Lowry was self-destructing behind him, and a shot into the 18th that plopped down near the pin and settled 5 feet away for birdie.

OAKLAND, Calif. – LeBron James cradled the shiny gold trophy and struggled to sum up what might be his sweetest championship yet, the one he is so proudly bringing home to his native northeast Ohio just as he promised to do when he returned to the Cavaliers two summers ago.

James and his relentless, nevercount-them-out Cavs pulled off an improbable NBA Finals comeback, and Cleveland is title town again at long last.

Unfazed by the criticism and chatter all series, James delivered on a vow to his home state and brought the Cavs back as they became the first team to rally from a 3-1 finals deficit, beating the defending champion Golden State Warriors 93-89 on Sunday night to end a 52-year major sports championship drought in Cleveland.

“I’m happy to be a part of history,” James said, then added, “I’m home.

I’m home. ... I’m at a loss for words.

This is unbelievable.”

In a testy series of blowouts – and a few blowups – the winner-take-all Game 7 providing the thrilling finale with James as the finals MVP disarming two-time reigning MVP Stephen Curry and his record-setting Warriors.

James almost single-handedly carried the Cavs back into this series and finished with 27 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds as the Cavs captured their first championship in franchise history and gave their city its first major sports winner since the Browns won the NFL title in 1964. He also had three blocked shots and two steals, overcoming five turnovers.

“CLEVELAND! This is for you!”

James bellowed in his postgame interview before being announced as finals MVP. An emotional James fell to the floor when this one ended with a second win in six days on Golden State’s imposing home floor, surrounded by his teammates.

So far, no well-designed clinical trials have evaluated systemic risks, such as breast cancer or blood clots, of low-dose vaginal estrogen.

But it’s likely that if there are such risks, they are much smaller than the risks related to systemic estrogen.

One complication of menopause women don’t often think of is recurrent urinary tract infections. Vaginal dryness not only causes vaginal symptoms such as discomfort during sex, but also encourages the growth of certain bacteria around the urethra – the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the vagina. If those bacteria get into the urethra, and then into the bladder, a UTI can start.

Apart from the high-dose Femring, vaginal estrogen is probably safe even over the long term. And if your main menopausal symptoms are vaginal symptoms, vaginal estrogen is just as effective as systemic HT and less risky. But talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits before you start – particularly if you have a history of breast cancer.

Dear Dr. K: Vaginal estrogen cream cures my vaginal dryness. But I hear estrogen is risky for the heart. Should I be concerned?

Dear Reader: Basically, I wouldn’t worry. Here’s why. Vaginal estrogen cream is one form of hormone therapy (HT).

HT is estrogen taken alone or with other female hormones to treat the symptoms of menopause. “Systemic” HT involves hormones that enter the blood and travel throughout the body. It is the most effective treatment for postmenopausal hot flashes and vaginal symptoms, including vaginal dryness.

Systemic HT is medicine taken by mouth or through the skin by a skin patch or gel. From those locations, it enters the blood. But systemic HT carries with it a small risk of several serious conditions. In women who started menopause more than 10 years ago, there is an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

For all women, there is an increased risk of blood clots and breast cancer (when progestins are included with estrogen).

Low-dose vaginal estrogen is available in several forms: creams, tablets (such as Vagifem) and other kinds of vaginal rings. Creams, tablets and most vaginal rings act mostly in the vagina. They relieve vaginal symptoms, including vaginal dryness, burning and pain with sexual intercourse. They do not relieve hot flashes.

Some vaginal estrogen creams are higher dose (more concentrated); some amount of estrogen is absorbed into the blood.

My father volunteers me to baby-sit my nieces while they are right in front of us and before I have a chance to discuss anything. Last week, we looked at “cover an honor with an honor” and found that it is usually right not to cover the first of touching honors, but to cover the last ... as long as it might gain a trick. However, as you are well aware, bridge stays healthy because there are exceptions to the rules. This week, so that the columns are not far apart, we will look at when you should break that cover-an-honor rule.

The first one features a tough play to find. South is in three notrump, and West leads the spade queen to declarer’s king. What happens after that?

South starts with six top tricks: two spades, one heart, two diamonds and one club. Clearly, he must try to establish and run dummy’s club suit.

He starts by leading his club 10. If West plays his low club (do not cover the first of touching honors), declarer runs the 10. Even if East ducks the trick, South will intentionally lose the second round of clubs, collect four club tricks, and take nine in all.

Now, though, let’s return to trick two. When dummy has a good suit like that and no side entry, West should immediately cover with his queen. What does declarer do then?

If he wins with dummy’s ace, East ducks the second club, takes the third, and plays a spade. Or, if South plays low from the board, planning to run the club jack on the second round of the suit, the contract will go down, because the defenders will take three spades and two clubs.
