POLL Enough with the parent-blaming YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

We’ve seen it at least twice in recent weeks: Something bad happens to a child, and people’s first reaction is to blame their parents.

Maybe we’ve become more judgmental as people, or maybe social media has made us all more attuned to the judgments being made out there all the time by our fellow humans.

Regardless, I don’t remember anyone asking whether Jessica McClure’s parents should be charged with child endangerment after she fell down a well as an 18-month-old girl in Texas in 1987. “Baby Jessica” was stuck inside the well for 2½ days, and she fell down because her mother left her unsupervised in a backyard while she went to answer the phone.

Also, someone left a well uncovered for her to fall into.

But she survived, and rather than face charges, the family made appearances on national TV and even were guests of President George H.W. Bush at the White House in 1989.

Contrast that with what happened in Cincinnati a couple of weeks ago: A 3-yearold boy wanders away from his mother and falls into the gorilla cage, and people want the mother prosecuted. The local county prosecutor has to publicly state that the child’s mother wouldn’t face any charges.

In Florida, a 2-year-old wades a couple of feet into Disney’s Seven Seas Lagoon, gets snatched by an alligator, and people say the parents should have known better.

C’mon, folks. Stop blaming parents for

NEW YORK – Three babies with Zika-linked birth defects have been born in the U.S., the government reported Thursday in its first accounting of outcomes for pregnant women infected with the virus.

The defects were also seen in three other pregnancies that ended.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been tracking the pregnancies of women with Zika infections since the beginning of the year. So

freak accidents. These families already must feel bad enough. The mere thought of losing a young child is enough to make a parent’s heart ache.

Who are these people suggesting that a parent actively supervising their child is to blame, or even should be charged with a crime for letting their child stray from their side for a couple of minutes?

They’re the same people who ask you to quiet your 2-year-old down in the supermarket checkout line, or give you the eye when your infant cries on an airplane. People who never had children but think they know just how to raise one.

If they’d ever had children, they’d realize how not so simple it is. They’d understand that, sometimes, children wander off, sometimes 2-year-olds have temper tantrums, sometimes babies just have to cry.

They’d certainly stop pointing their fingers at grieving parents whose children die in freak accidents.

Volunteers help out DeKalb County nonprofits on Day of Caring

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The tables turned on local nonprofit workers Thursday, when community members gave back by volunteering to tackle to-do lists at organizations throughout the county.

This year, Kishwaukee United Way mobilized about 195 volunteers for its 12th annual Day of Caring, which helped 27 local nonprofit organizations in need of a few extra hands to finish housekeeping and serve the community.

Every fresh coat of paint or newly planted garden meant money and time saved for the organizations, many of which don’t have the time or manpower to accomplish those tasks during a regular workweek, said Jackie DiNatale, Kishwaukee United Way coordinator of outreach and finance.

“The heart of what we try to get across is volunteers are the backbone of most volunteer organizations,” she said.

Corporate groups, families and students came out between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday to lay mulch, pull weeds and deliver Meals on Wheels.

Northern Illinois University Summer Research Opportunities Program Coordinator Ashley Kyle organized a group of McKearn Fellowship honor students to brighten up the Ellwood House Museum’s Berg Garden.

“It’s really fun. Being at the Ellwood House is really wonderful anyway. We got to hear a little bit about it, so that was really interesting,” Kyle said. “We kind of wanted to do this for bonding purposes. It’s nice to actually get out and do some work. It’s relaxing.”

The Ellwood House Museum relies on volunteers each year to help plant flowers and pull weeds in the garden.

“We’ve only done it with volunteers. We don’t have a big enough staff to tackle these projects otherwise,” he said. “These guys are awesome. They’re saving tons and tons of time.”

At the Children’s Learning Center, 905 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, a group of six volunteers replaced the mulch on the center’s playground for the second

consecutive year.

Knowing the children who benefit from the organization would have a safe, clean spot to play was payment enough, said Tia Anderson, TCF Bank employee and Kishwaukee United Way board member.

“A lot of people, especially with today’s budget impasse, they’re just short-staffed, and they don’t have the capabilities to get a lot of this stuff done on their own,” Anderson said.

“So, today, we get to go out and help

them take care of what all needs to get done without them worrying about the cost.”

Often, the Day of Caring plants a seed in volunteers, who find something worth coming back for at the organization they help, DiNatale said.

“Lots of people just find it a really exhilarating day to be able to come out and actually do something,” she said.

“They love, for lack of a better word, the hands-on part of it, and they really can see the fruits of their labor.”

Waiting list grows, funding shrinks Adult education program does what it can amid financial woes

rgillespie@shawmedia.com MALTA – A clerical error and the state budget impasse led to a downsized Kishwaukee College Adult Education program this past year, but officials said legislation and local benevolence will help thwart a repeat of that this fall.

“Even though the federal government had given these funds to be disbursed ... they got caught up in the state budget impasse,” said Joanne Kanter, dean of the Adult Education and Transition Programs.

And that was the second hurdle that confronted the program for the 2015-16 academic year, after first being faced with the state budget not being in place as of July 1, 2015.

AETP’s $358,000 budget is fully grant-funded – two each from the state and federal governments – and is separate from Kishwaukee College’s budget.

“We really had a problem this year because ... the federal funds were coded as state funds,” Kanter said.

AETP offers high school equivalency preparation classes for 16- to 21-year-olds; classes where adults older than 21 can get their high school diploma equivalent and, at the same time, a vocational certificate; and courses to teach English language proficiency.

All are offered free to residents of the college district. Classes are held in the fall and spring for 15 to 16 weeks each semester. Math, science, language arts and social studies courses are offered.

The coding issue was resolved only after legislation was passed last fall. That all made for a rough fall semester for the program; the spring one was worse.

The program still has not received any state funds, and that money makes up more than half of the AETP budget, program officials said.

So Kishwaukee College, which itself was in a financial bind, contributed some money to AETP to keep it rolling. The program had to offer at least one class to keep its federal grants. For spring, there were nine classes – down from at least 19

– and no new students could be accepted to the program that semester. That led to the current waiting list of more than 100 people seeking to enroll.

“If we had to close, we would not have been able to offer anything at all next year, and would have had to wait until the next competitive year [to bid for a new program] and build everything from scratch,” Kanter said.

Further, the spring semester classes could be offered only at four sites, including on the KC campus, instead of the nine

the programs it usually has. AETP usually includes up to 25 instructors, but this spring it had only 12.

But a string of unexpected contributions brought good news to the program for summer classes, and the ones expected to start Sept. 12.

A relatively new local women’s charitable organization, 100 Women Who Care, selected the adult education program to receive a $10,900 donation. That money helped extend the program into the summer and offer classes that started

in March, officials said.

“We would have been done, with whatever funds we had, at the end of April or beginning of May,” AETP Director Tricia Wagner said. “We were barebones, and this helped us put a little bit of meat on those bones.”

Also, KC will share with AETP a portion of the $1.1 million in state aid the college finally received, after waiting 10 months to get it. Kanter said the $110,000 means the fall program can start on time, serve more students and offer as many as 16 classes at up to nine locations.

“It’s not as much as we would have gotten from the state, but it’s a definite commitment to the mission for the students we serve – and knowing we can have the continuity of services,” Kanter said.

New students will be invited to enroll, and classes are to be held in the Sycamore, Rochelle, DeKalb and other Kishwaukee College communities.

Spring 2017 still is uncertain, however.

“But we don’t need to worry abut that yet,” Wagner said.

Born: Dec. 28, 1948; Sycamore, IL Died: May 25, 2016 Randall S. Bowen, age 67, of Berlin, WI, and Tripoli, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 25, 2016.

Randy was born Dec. 28, 1948, in Sycamore, IL, to Scott and Elsie (Anderson) Bowen. The family later moved to Joliet, IL, where Randy attended Joliet Central and West High Schools.

After graduation, he served his country proudly in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1971. Randy had a deep respect for the military and veterans.

He moved to Berlin, WI, in 1977, where he was employed for 20 years with Oshkosh Corporation.

He loved hunting, fishing, gun-collecting and spending as much time as he could with his family at his cabin he built in Tripoli. He had a passion for knife-making and making rustic furniture. Randy loved animals, especially his dogs.

Survivors include: His Mother, Elsie Bowen, of Joliet, IL; his significant other, Roberta Miller, of Oshkosh, WI; his son, Eric (Marnie) Bowen, of Greenville, WI; and his daughter, Lori (Bryan) Hahn, of Fremont, WI; two stepdaughters, Kersten and Marissa Miller; three brothers, Curt Bowen, of Pennsylvania, Tom (Sue) Bowen, of Plainfield, IL, and

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Eight start-up companies have applied to be among the first tenants at the DeKalb County Business Incubator, which is set to open next month.

The advisory board for the county-run incubator is reviewing applications for businesses that have applied for space in the DeKalb County Community Outreach Building, 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road. The 26,000-square-foot building features private offices, shared work spaces, conference rooms, high-speed fiber-optic internet connections and support services for small businesses. Rental prices range from $250 to $500 As it prepares to select the first tenants, the incubator also is putting out a call for a second round of applications.

The first tenants will be selected by the advisory board based on a variety of selection criteria, including the potential for success, growth, job creation and potential economic benefit to the community, according to the county’s website.

DeKalb County Economic Development Coordinator Mary Supple said she was pleased with the number of applications generated so far.

“There’s been a lot of interest,” she said. “Even from outside the county, people want to come here.”

Advisory board member Jerry Foster, who is director of business development for Resource Bank, said some of the businesses that have applied are in the early stages of development, while others just have an idea. Even so, he has been

Tenants will have access to business seminars led by industry experts and business training through the Small Business Development Center of Elgin Community College, Kishwaukee College and Northern Illinois University.

There also will be counseling through a business mentoring program.

Give Local event sets record SYCAMORE – This year’s Give Local DeKalb County campaign set a new fundraising record by bringing in $428,297 for local nonprofit organizations.

Sixty-eight nonprofits participated in the one-day online giving campaign this year, and the fundraising total was more than double what was raised in 2015 and triple what was raised in 2014, the first year the campaign was held here, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership and DeKalb County Community Foundation.

“The third time was a charm,” said Lynette Spencer, executive director of Adventure Works and Give Local DeKalb County committee chairwoman. “What a phenomenal event for our area nonprofits. It was inspiring to see our community come together to support the great work being done and to feel a sense of camaraderie among my fellow nonprofits.”

Donors from 30 states and five countries gave $324,547 to the campaign, either in person or online.

Those donations were proportionally matched with $103,750 in funds that came from large donors. That

SYCAMORE – A U.S. Department of Homeland Security investigation led to the seizure of more than 264 pounds of cocaine and the arrest of four men believed to be involved in a drug trafficking ring.

Bond on the men’s warrants was set at $5 million. They are being held in the DeKalb County Jail.

“The seizures and arrests strike a blow against traffickers in large amounts of a dangerous controlled substance, and we are proud to have worked with this task force to bring these charges here in DeKalb County,” Schmack said in the release.

STATE Security to get boost for upcoming gay pride events

The Associated Press CHICAGO – The huge crowds expected to attend gay pride parades around the United States in the coming weeks will be greeted by more police officers and ramped-up security measures as a means to protect them in the wake of the mass shooting in a gay nightclub in Florida.

While many federal and local authorities around the U.S. said they have not received information on any credible threats, Houston is investigating a threat that was made against the parade in a tweet.

Meanwhile, authorities from Denver to Chicago to New Orleans are tightening security with bag searches, more police officers and private security workers and more crowd-control barriers.

In Chicago, where nearly 1 million people have attended the pride parade in previous years, better security – including 200 additional uniformed and plainclothes officers – will be assigned to this weekend’s PrideFest and next weekend’s parade out of “an abundance of caution,” Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Thursday.

Parade organizers themselves also are providing additional security at the city’s request – hiring 160 off-duty

Ill. borrows $550M for projects despite budget mess

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois borrowed $550 million Thursday for construction projects, taking advantage of historically low interest rates as the state approaches one full year with a budget.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office announced the bond sale to Bank of America Merrill Lynch in a bidding process that offered Illinois a 3.74 percent interest rate – the lowest in Illinois history for similarly situated general obligation bonds, a spokeswoman said.

A bond expert noted the entire market is operating amid all-time low interest rates and Illinois could have done better were it in better fiscal shape.

Heat wave expands in Midwestern, Southern states

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A sweltering heat wave is expanding as temperatures in the Midwest and South approach near record-setting levels in the waning days of spring.

The National Weather Service said the number of states under heat advisories nearly doubled Thursday to 12. The affected states are Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Louisiana, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Temperatures are forecast in the 90s across much of those states, but the humidity is expected to make them feel much hotter. Heat indexes are expected to hit 115 degrees in central Oklahoma and northeastern Arkansas.

The weather service in Little Rock said on Twitter: “It’s DISGUSTING out there!”

Court: Aviation company’s tax exemption invalid

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Supreme Court has invalidated a law that gave a property tax exemption to a Moline-based aviation company.

The 6-1 decision released Thursday declares the 2013 law is unconstitutional “special legislation.” The exemption allowed Elliott Aviation to expand at the Quad City International Airport without paying property taxes.

The Moline School District filed a lawsuit to prevent the loss of $150,000 in annual tax revenue.

Justice Lloyd Karmeier noted in the court’s opinion that the state constitution prohibits laws benefiting only one person or group. Elliott alone got the tax break.

Elliott issued a statement through its lawyer saying it will continue working

But in Chicago, parade coordinator Richard Pfeiffer said the attack may increase attendance for the 47th parade.

“Our history shows that we beat back hate like this by coming out and coming together and being in public,” he said. “The feedback we are getting is that more people want to come out (to demonstrate) they won’t be pushed back into the closet.”

Chicago man convicted of Evanston death sentenced

SKOKIE – A 46-year prison sentence has been handed to Chicago man for the 1992 murder of an Evanston woman whose body was discovered by her then-4-year-old son.

DNA tests led to first-degree murder charges being filed in 2013 against Jimmie Dunlap in the death of 25-year-old Deondra Dawson. An autopsy determined Dawson had been stabbed at least 34 times.

The Cook County state’s attorney’s Cold Case Unit and Evanston police reopened an investigation of the case in 2010. Dunlap’s name came up as a match when the department submitted evidence swabs to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab. Judge Jeffrey Warnick had found the 45-year-old Dunlap guilty in a bench trial in April, and sentenced him Wednesday.

Crashed Egyptian jet’s voice recorder recovered

CAIRO – Egypt said Thursday it has recovered the cockpit voice recorder from the submerged wreckage of EgyptAir Flight 804, a major breakthrough in the inves-

The announcement came a day after officials said they had found the wreckage of the Airbus A320 and are putting together a map of the debris on the seabed. Obama visits Orlando, appeals for gun controls

ORLANDO, Fla. – Embracing grieving Orlando families and appealing anew for national action, President Barack Obama claimed a threat to all Americans’ security Thursday as a strong reason to tighten U.S. gun laws. Counterterror campaigns overseas, he declared, can never prevent all “lone wolf” attacks like the one that killed 49 people in Orlando.

Speaking at a makeshift memorial to the victims, Obama said the massacre at a gay nightclub was evidence that “different steps” are needed to limit the damage a “deranged” person set on committing violence can do. He cheered on Democrats’ push for new gun control measures, including a new ban on assault weapons and stricter background checks.

Although he showed little hope the measures would find much support among most opponents, Obama seemed to be aiming for other lawmakers, perhaps Republican hawks eager to get behind counterterror campaigns but steadfastly opposed to gun restrictions.

Obama arrived as Orlando began the next stage of its grief – funerals all over town. A visitation for one victim, Javier Jorge-Reyes, on Wednesday night turned out a crowd of friends, family, drag queens and motorcyclists to pay their respects.

“We’re just here to spread love and joy and try to put an end to all the hate,” said Ezekiel Davis – or, as he’s known to some, Sister Anesthesia Beaverhausen. Obama could not miss

John McCain, a Republican and frequent Obama critic, accused the president of being “directly responsible” for the shooting because, he said, Obama had allowed the growth of the Islamic State group on his watch. McCain quickly walked back those comments with a written statement saying he had misspoken and was referring to Obama’s “national security decisions, not the president himself.”

The gunman, Omar Mateen, had made calls during the attack saying he was an IS supporter.

But CIA Director John Brennan said Thursday the agency has found no connection between the gunman and any foreign terrorist organization.

In Orlando, Obama noted the need for strong efforts to fight terrorists before they can get to America, but he said that’s not enough.

“It’s going to take more than just our military,” he said. “We will not be able to stop every tragedy. We can’t wipe away hatred and evil from every heart in this world, but we can stop some tragedies. We can save some lives.”

Officials at the DeKalb County Health Department must be feeling that way about now. A loan the county took out 20 years ago to build a new nursing home has been paid off, and now they’re eager to spend that money – about $650,000 a year – on something else.

The only problem is, it’s not theirs to spend. It’s the taxpayers’ money.

So health officials want the county board to approve a referendum that would keep the debt repayment tax in place so they could use it for operations.

The Health Department does important work. Our story this week on their health crisis drill was a highly public example, but they have many other responsibilities, including restaurant health inspections, animal control, immunizations for children, solid waste management, even tanning and body art regulation enforcement.

But this kind of referendum proposal is a perfect example of why the property tax burden in Illinois is so staggering. And why property taxes never go down.

County board members could choose to put the measure on the ballot in the fall (when voter turnout will be much higher) or in spring 2017 (when it will be low).

The sales pitch probably will be: The state and federal governments aren’t paying enough to support the health department’s important work, and this is a “revenue neutral” initiative that won’t cost the public anything more in taxes.

Eliminating the tax will save the owner of a $200,000 home less than $23 a year – a pittance, really.

In reality, this proposal is for a conveniently timed tax increase. It’s money that government officials think they can get, so they’re going to try. If the measure passes, they’ll have access to these funds forever.

Once they put a tax on your property, government officials are loath to remove it. When the original use for the money is done, darned if there isn’t something else just as crucially important that pops up.

Suggest that the funds should go back to the public, however, and advocates will downplay the importance of reducing property owners’ tax bills by such a small amount.

But small amounts add up. In the case of many homeowners, they add up to several thousand dollars a year. In fact, Illinois’ property taxes are a key reason people are leaving the state.

As County Board member Steve Faivre, D-4th District, pointed out at Wednesday’s meeting, it’s highly coincidental that the amount the health department needs to sustain itself is exactly the amount taxpayers were paying for the building bonds.

Actually, it doesn’t seem coincidental to us at all.

In the information age, China has become world champion at using tools to influence what its 1.3 billion people can see and read. The ruling Communist Party rejects the norms of openness, democracy and accountability promoted by the West. Authoritarian and illiberal, China’s leaders want to stay that way, and are waging a fierce campaign to do so.

Recently, a group of social science and communications professors in the United States offered a startling glimpse of how it works. Gary King, Jennifer Pan and Margaret E. Roberts estimated that the Chinese government fabricates and posts 448 million social media messages a year, and that it employs a vast and secretive army, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, to carry this out. They report that many are government employees, working in their off hours, and paid the equivalent of pennies for each posting.

The messages, they found, do not directly confront or argue with skeptics of the Chinese party-state, but rather attempt to distract the population from thoughts of protest, from their grievances with the government and from overall dissatisfaction.

China’s ambitious Great Firewall, which blocks overseas social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, is well-known, but other methods of control are less so.

The regime has been tightening enforcement of rules on foreign companies that provide online content inside China, prohibiting them

from offering streaming services under their own brands or without a Chinese partner. The latest casualty appears to be Apple, which has been more successful than most in China but was forced in April to close its iBooks Store and iTunes Movies streaming services at the request of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television.

There wasn’t a specific reason given in public – Apple earlier had received approval – but the shutdown may have signaled another step in China’s determination to push back against Western culture, brands and content. Separately, in recent weeks, according to Bloomberg, the authorities have been talking with Chinese internet portals, mobile apps and online video companies about a scheme in which the state would take shares of their businesses and a board seat to make sure they do not get out of line.

China’s ascension to the World Trade Organization was to be an opening to the world. The WTO agreement was negotiated before the existence of today’s mammoth e-commerce sector; but attempts to dictate contents of the internet and choose winners and losers online – accelerated by President Xi Jinping – run against the spirit of the WTO agreement.

China’s rulers cannot stand the idea that people should be allowed to read and think what they like. All the fortresses they have constructed – the Great Firewall and the secret army of information soldiers – seem impregnable now.

But over time, they can be penetrated, and the West ought to be doing more to ensure that information runs free, everywhere, including China.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

“They were worried about backlash in the congregation and in the community,” she said. “I was devastated.”

After the massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, silence at Sycamore United Church of Christ was no longer an option, she decided.

At 8 a.m., Pastor Robin walked out her front door and across the street to the church where she has served as head pastor for seven years. She sat down at her desk to think about how to alter her sermon.

She had planned to talk about community. She still would, she decided.

She didn’t write down what she wanted to say about the massacre in Orlando. She didn’t have to. Her mind was full of thoughts for the people she knew in Sycamore’s LGBT community.

Later that day, she would send a text message to a close friend who is gay: How are you? I have been think-

ing of you. I love you.

I love you, too, her friend responded.

She sent another text to the mother of a gay child: I imagine you may be afraid ... I will continue to work to make this a safe community. The mother forwarded the text to her children.

“Sometimes, people don’t want to talk,” Pastor Robin said. “They just want to know that somebody cares.”

At the 10 a.m. service, Pastor Robin talked about the church community, lifting up the good works of the congregation. She celebrated a woman’s fifth anniversary of church membership, too.

Then she turned to the tragedy in Orlando.

When she mentioned the 20 dead victims, she could tell by the look of shock on so many faces that most had not heard the news.

“Something took hold of me,” she said. “It really was one of those Holy Spirit moments when I suddenly knew what to say.”

She told them, “I’m not interested in what your personal feelings are about gay people. But I am interested in what God has to say about all of us. God loves all of us, without exception – period. And that’s what we are called to do, too: Love everyone.”

Immediately, she felt such relief.

“I felt no fear,” she said. “Not being as explicit about this as I’ve wanted to be has taken a toll on me

emotionally and spiritually. I was respecting them at the cost of my theological integrity. It felt like a sin of omission. It felt like a betrayal to my friends and my family.”

Pastor Robin and a few members of the congregation are organizing a vigil for the Orlando victims at 7 p.m. Friday on the Wyandot County Courthouse lawn. She hopes that other pastors in the community will join her. It’s a fitting ending for her, as she is leaving the Sycamore church later this month. Long before the Orlando shootings, she had accepted a new position at a more progressive UCC church.

“I took this church as far as I could,” she said. “There are wonderful people here, but I am an activist.

Our LGBT friends need us, their allies, to stay strong for them, to speak out for them. And, right now, they need to know that we support them, that we know they are grieving.”

Her new church is in Spring Hill, Florida, only an hour and a half north of Orlando, where 49 innocent people were killed and more than 50 others are injured.

“Yeah, I thought about that,” she said. “I am ready.”

Why it’s important for the president to say ‘radical Islam’

The Washington Post On Tuesday, in a remarkable display of arrogance and tone-deaf rhetoric, President Barack Obama, in an angry rant about why he doesn’t use the phrase “radical Islam,” asked the question, “What exactly would using this label accomplish? What exactly would it change?”

And although he called the whole issue a “political distraction,” his question deserves a serious answer.

Frankly, at this stage, it is alarming that the answer is not obvious to the president and those around him.

The difference is that calling these terrorists what they are – radical Islamists – would be reassuring to those Americans who have doubts about Obama’s proficiency as commander in chief.

By using the phrase, it would help

build confidence that he actually understands the problem and, therefore, has a viable plan to defeat the enemy.

After all, he is the one who used the term “jayvee team” to describe the Islamic State.

He is the one who declared Iraq “sovereign, stable and self-reliant.”

He is the one who announced an absurd withdrawal date from Afghanistan.

He is the one who took six years to declare the Fort Hood shooting a terrorist attack and not an incident of “workplace violence.”

So to be clear, using the phrase “radical Islam” isn’t about trying to make the Islamic State “less committed to trying to kill Americans.”

Mr. President, it is not about the Islamic State – it’s about you. Your specific refusal to use the term rattles Americans and increases doubts

about your grasp of the threat that the Islamic State presents. Islam has a problem, and Obama needs to say so.

He needs to help the world come together and work this out – and admitting the problem out loud is an essential step.

Obama’s enablers like to boast that our Nobel Peace Prize-winning president ended two wars. The fact is, this president has neither won nor ended any wars. At the end of his eight years in office, the United States will be facing more grinding conflicts than existed when he won the presidency.

Donald Trump, for all his faults, has forced Hillary Clinton to cross the threshold and acknowledge the obvious, that “radical Islam” is a dangerous threat to our country.

Trump-speak has become an infection in the political discourse, but he

should not be used as a straw man for Obama to hide behind.

Somehow pretending that this is about Trump, or that he is the only one who cares about using clear labels to describe our national security threats, is disingenuous.

Again, this is not about Trump, or Republicans, or about a military strategy to defeat the Islamic State.

This is about the president being honest with the American people and assuring them that he understands the threats against us.

Sunday started to bloom as it usually does for the Rev. Robin LaBolt, layer upon layer of her morning ritual gently unfurling.

Pastor Robin, as her parishioners call her, awakened at 5:30 a.m. and headed for the kitchen of her home in Sycamore, Ohio – population 847 by the most recent census count.

She made coffee for herself before strolling into the living room and settling into her favorite chair. She reached into the basket on the floor and pulled out her iPad to check the news.

She doesn’t remember which news organization’s headline she saw first. Doesn’t matter.

They all said the same thing: 20 people were dead and dozens more were wounded after a gunman opened fire in a gay bar in Orlando, Florida.

“Dear God,” she said aloud in the empty room. “Dear God. No.” Her immediate conclusion: It was a hate crime. “He goes into a gay bar and starts shooting?” she said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

“It’s a hate crime.”

Pastor Robin knew the challenge waiting for her at Sycamore United Church of Christ.

“We’re a small town,” she said.

“It’s not exactly an LGBT-friendly area. Not that anyone says bad things about them. They’d just rather not talk about it.”

First Baptist Church of DeKalb Day Camp is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

In 1975, Mary Evelyn Phillips had a vision for an outreach for the summer Bible school for First Baptist Church in DeKalb. She met with Ruth Peterson, Connie Taylor, Betsy Smith and Bonnie Walker. Since the Walkers lived on a farm with lots of space and buildings, plus a swimming pool, it was decided this would be the place to have day camp.

The first day camp was held in 1976 at the Walker farm south of DeKalb on Route 23. During the early years, campers enjoyed seeing the farm animals, riding ponies, making arts and crafts, having lessons in tents, eating snacks and lunches, and, of course, swimming. Sometimes there were

special workshops on soccer, flags, or dance.

There was always a cookout featuring hot dogs, corn on the cob and watermelon. Some years there were more than 100 campers, and previous campers are now bringing their own children to the camp.

The 2016 First Baptist Church of DeKalb Day Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. July 18 through 22 at the Walker Farm, 17610 IL Route 23 (one mile south of DeKalb).

This year’s theme is “Egypt: Joseph’s Journey from Prison to Palace.” The camp is for children entering grades one to seven. Registration for one child is $15. The fee for additional children in the same family is $5.

Sycamore’s Michael Beaudoin is the 2016 Daily Chronicle Baseball Player of the Year. ter, I was like, ‘This feels great to pitch again.’ Once he started to let me throw and told me I was our No. 2 (pitcher), I was like, ‘Sweet.’ ” Cavanaugh said he was careful with Beaudoin’s innings and number of pitches during the season, putting together a systematic schedule that would keep the 6-foot-3 senior’s arm fresh behind the plate. Beaudoin only surpassed 100 pitches in a game twice – both in the postseason. He threw 104 pitches in six innings during a 10-6 win over Burlington Central in the regional final.

In the Class 3A Rochelle Sectional final against Rockford Christian, Beaudoin allowed one earned run while throwing a complete game on 110 pitches in a 4-3 victory for Sycamore.

“It would have taken a tow truck to get him out of that game,” Cavanaugh said.

Beaudoin also picked up the save in the sectional semifinal against Rock Falls, striking out the side in the seventh in the Spartans’ 10-7 victory.

Offensively, Beaudoin provided plenty of production as the team’s

He ended the year by throwing out more runners (eight) than successfully stole a base (seven) against Myers. At the plate, he hit .362 with a pair of home runs and 27 RBIs, and he also stole 23 bases.

Jack Mizgalski Sycamore, jr., first baseman While Mizgalski also was a top pitcher for the Spartans (7-3, 2.97 ERA, 85 strikeouts), he was a force at the plate, as well. On the season, he hit .333 with 12 doubles and 26 RBIs and also had a walk-off grand slam in the Spartans’ 7-4 win over Mendota in a regional semifinal.

Trevor Guerra Indian Creek, jr., shortstop Guerra did a little bit of everything for the Timberwolves. He led the team in innings pitched

and strikeouts on the mound, but the slick-fielding Guerra also had only four errors at shortstop this season. He hit .372 with 25 RBIs and 27 stolen bases for Indian Creek.

Connor Hoyle DeKalb, sr., third baseman One of the few returning starters for the Barbs, Hoyle finished the year hitting .325 and had a .946 fielding percentage. The senior also was named the team MVP for the Barbs.

Zach Carlsen Sycamore, soph., shortstop The starting shortstop for Sycamore as a sophomore, Carlsen emerged as a strong No. 2 hitter in the Spartans lineup. On the season, he hit .324 with 27 runs and 33 RBIs and was third on the team in on-base percentage (.437).

Jordan Wright Sycamore, sr., outfielder An anchor at the top of the lineup for the Spartans, Wright had another strong season for Sycamore – hitting .450 with a .547 on-base percentage, 27 RBIs, 45 runs and 24 stolen bases. He had by far the most total bases (71) for the Spartans.

Jake Marczuk Kaneland, sr., outfielder Not only did Marczuk not make an error on 45 chances this season, he hit .373 with 16 runs and 12 stolen bases as the leadoff hitter for the Knights. He also drew a team-high 19 walks.

Tommy Hansen Genoa-Kingston, sr., outfielder Hansen was the Cogs’ best offensive player this season, hitting .391 with nine doubles, 22 runs and 28 RBIs. He also added two home runs and stole 10 bases, while providing strong defense in the outfield for the Cogs.

Brady Huffman Genoa-Kingston, sr., pitcher The Cogs’ ace had another strong showing this season, as the hard-throwing right-hander finished 5-3 with a save and a 1.81 ERA. Always racking up strikeouts, he finished with 119 in 63 1/3 innings pitched.

Matt O’Sullivan Kaneland, sr., pitcher Always pitching against Kaneland’s toughest opponents, O’Sullivan finished with a perfect 4-0

record in conference play. On the season, the left-handed ace for the Knights had a 1.96 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings.

Bryce Wheeler DeKalb, soph., pitcher The left-handed sophomore had a breakout season for DeKalb. At one point, he was 3-0 with a 0.54 ERA and a 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio before finishing the season with a 2.88 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched.

James Marcinkowski Sycamore, jr., designated hitter The hero of the Spartans’ sectional championship win over Rockford Christian, Marcinkowski hit .295 with 10 doubles and 33 RBIs on the season. He hit the walk-off RBI single in a 4-3 win over Rockford Christian to send the Spartans to a supersectional.

SYCAMORE – Michael Beaudoin only pitched one game for the Sycamore baseball team in 2015.

However, a mass exodus of starting pitchers from graduation left Spartans coach Jason Cavanaugh with no choice – Beaudoin had to be one of the team’s main pitchers in 2016. By the end of the season, Beaudoin’s performance on the mound helped Sycamore advance to a Class 3A supersectional, and he is the 2016 Daily Chronicle Baseball Player of the Year.

“Last year, we didn’t need him at all as a pitcher because we had so many arms that were quality,” Cavanaugh said of Beaudoin, who doubles as the team’s main catcher. “I wasn’t expecting a lot. I was hoping he could be a five-inning guy during the year.”

Beaudoin rewarded Cavanaugh’s decision by going 6-2 on the mound with three saves and a 1.96 ERA – striking out 51 and walking just 12 in 53 2/3 innings.

“I’ve kind of known for a while that I can pitch,” Beaudoin said. “But when he had me start pitching in the win-

cleanup hitter. He finished the season hitting .357 with 10 doubles, 26 runs and 45 RBIs. He was one RBI shy of tying the school’s single-season record of 46 set

by Dane Ryan in 2000. In a three-game sweep of rival DeKalb – one of the turning points of the season for the Spartans – Beaudoin went 6 for 11 with five RBIs. In the final two games of the season, coaches of a pair of the best pitchers in the state – Rockford Christian’s Alex Powell and Limestone’s Bryce Meyer – elected to intentionally walk Beaudoin with a runner on and a base open.

“It’s like, ‘All right, well, this sucks.’

I want to hit, obviously, I want to be a producer for this team,” Beaudoin said.

“But at the same time, I look at it like, let’s have the next batter make them pay for it. It’s another baserunner for us and another chance to get a run.”

However, Beaudoin’s time at Sycamore is done after the Spartans’ wild postseason ride came to an end in the supersectional. He’s now off to play baseball at College of DuPage, a junior college in Glen Ellyn. Signing with the Chaparrals early helped him relax this season, he said, which had a positive impact on his play.

But with high school now in the rearview mirror, Beaudoin said it’s not the end of something – it’s the beginning of one.

“It has soaked in, but I look at it this way: It’s not the end,” he said. “I’ll still be around and I got college ball for two years, and then who knows after that?”

Cubs look for help from Contreras’ arm

After another tough day for the Cubs against an opponent’s running game Wednesday in a 12-inning loss to the Nationals, Cubs manager Joe Maddon was asked about shoring up that weakness.

“We’ve been trying,” he said. “We’ve been trying.”

Thursday, they stepped up the efforts, making the call to bring up top catching prospect Willson Contreras from Triple-A Iowa for his big-league debut.

Contreras, who joins the team Friday for the series opener against the division-rival Pirates, showed off in spring training what might be the strongest catching arm on the club.

Maddon said last week in Philadelphia he expected Contreras to debut this season, hinting he could be ready soon.

“I’ve heard nothing but glowing reports about him,” Maddon said then, cautioning only against the risk of disrupting the effectiveness of the best-performing starting staff in the majors.

“He’s doing everything properly,” Maddon added. “I’m hearing a lot about his defense.”

He’ll be the Cubs’ third catcher, fast-tracking his receiving and game-management education under the guidance of Ross and struggling veteran Miguel Montero.

Montero, who lockered next to Contreras in spring training and checked in with him again during an injury rehab assignment last month, congratulated Contreras via Twitter:

“Brother welcome to the big show.

I’m proud of you …”

Montero’s struggles at the plate and behind it as he has battled the back issue that put him on the DL might have influenced Contreras’ timeline. Montero is hitting .210 with three homers and a .677 OPS in 34 games.

Contreras, last year’s Southern League batting champion, was hitting .350 with nine home runs and a 1.030 OPS in 54 games for Iowa.

A converted third baseman, Contreras, 24, was signed by the previous front office regime as an amateur free agent in 2009 from the same Venezuela hometown as former Cubs pitching ace Carlos Zambrano (Puerto Cabello).

“I think he’s got as much ability as anybody at that position,” Cubs catching coach Mike Borzello said of Contreras during an outstanding spring. “He’s the kind of athletic, strong, strongarmed, powerful-legged, young catcher that you don’t come across very often.”

Tim Federowicz, who has been on the big-league roster since Montero went on the DL in late April (remaining as the third catcher), is to be designated for assignment to make room.

The Cubs have allowed the second-highest total of stolen bases in the majors (51). They’ve caught only 11 trying to steal for the second-lowest caught-stealing percentage (17.7 percent).

“It is what it is,” Maddon said after Wednesday’s game. “So far, our record’s pretty good. So I don’t think it’s hurt us a lot to this point.”

During an interview with the Des Moines Register last week, Contreras said: “I’m patient because I know who I am, and I’m having a good season. So sooner or later they have to do something.”

Echoing sentiments he expressed in spring training, he added: “As soon as I get there, I will never be back.”

Lack of run support for Quintana continues

CLEVELAND – Jose Quintana is pitching for the White Sox on Friday, and that can mean only one thing. The Sox’s lineup will be good for one or two runs against Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer.

This is how it always goes for Quintana, the tough-luck left-hander who continues to pitch with steady effectiveness but carries on with miniscule run support. For whatever reason, the Sox simply don’t score when Quintana takes the mound.

“I’ve never been a part of something like that,” said Todd Frazier, a first-year Sox who is witnessing for the first time what’s been happening for years. “For a month now, he’s doing the same thing.

We have to find a way to get over that hump.”

In fact, Quintana has been doing the same thing for four years.

“You’re conscious of it, for sure,” Frazier said. “After the game it’s like, ‘We let another one slip by. He gave up one run and they only scored two or three.’ You feel for the guy.”

Maybe Quintana should tear the club- Jose Quintana house apart, throw his arms up and shout “Enough! Score me some freaking runs.” But that’s not his style. A calm, workmanlike, unselfish demeanor is what makes him one of the most popular players in the room.

“I sometimes feel frustrated because we don’t get runs, but I know the hitters try to do their best every time,” Quintana said. “I don’t have control over that.”

In five seasons in the majors, all as a Sox starter, Quintana has posted ERAs of 3.76, 3.51, 3.32, 3.36 and 2.66, the latter in 2016 with a 5-7 record. He is the only pitcher since 1901 to log 200 innings in each season with an ERA of 3.54 or lower and not win more than nine games, and his 52 no-decisions from 2012 to 2015 were the most in a four-year span in major league history.

Quintana, who ranks fourth in the American League in ERA, has received a total of four runs of support over his past six starts and is 0-6 during that span. According to STATS, he’s the first Sox pitcher to receive zero or one run of support in six straight starts since Ross Baumgarten went seven in a row in 1980.

Perhaps it has gotten to the point where hitters, wanting badly to turn the tide for Quintana, don’t stay within themselves when Quintana pitches.

That seems somewhat far-fetched, but

crazier things have happened.

“You have to control what you have to control,” Frazier said. “When he’s been pitching the last couple times, I think we haven’t been controlling what we’re taught to control – pitch selection, getting the guy over, that kind of stuff.

Not putting too much pressure on yourself.”

The Sox, 10-23 in their past 33 games after going 23-10 in the first 33, are embarking on a tough and important road trip that continues in Boston. They’re 2½ games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central, and Quintana is 5-2 with a 2.71 ERA against them.

Some runs would be nice.

OAKMONT, Pa. – Even a rainsoaked Oakmont didn’t keep the U.S. Open from delivering its usual dose of frustration.

Just not the kind anyone expected.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth, who had spent five days preparing on the firm and fiery greens of Oakmont, posed over a wedge into the 17th that landed behind the hole, spun back and kept rolling until it trickled down a slope into the bunker.

“You’ve got to be KIDDING me!

How is that in the bunker?” Spieth said before slinging his club toward the bag.

Masters champion Danny Willett sat in a cabin behind the seventh tee for more than an hour as his group waited out the first of three rain delays. When the weather cleared, players were sent back onto the course without having a chance to warm up again.

“You’re in a U.S. Open, they don’t give you a chance to even hit a few balls,” Willett said, and he wasn’t alone in that observation.

Most frustrating of all?

Only nine players finished the first round, and 78 players didn’t even tee off. Play was to resume at 7:30 a.m.

Friday.

It was the worst rain delay in a U.S. Open since no one finished the opening round at Bethpage Black in 2009 in a tournament that ended on a Monday.

The first round was suspended for a third and final time just as 28-yearold qualifier Andrew Landry was fin-

ishing up a dream round in his U.S. Open debut. Coming off two straight bogeys, Landry drilled his approach to about 10 feet on the par-4 ninth when the horn sounded as a violent storm approached. He was at 3-under par.

“I was trying to get it in,” Landry said. “But it’s hard when you’ve got a couple of 60-footers out here. And it’s the U.S. Open. So you’ve just got to be patient with it.”

He wasn’t the only player to make a quick impression in his first U.S. Open. On the short list of players who finished was Scottie Scheffler, who just finished his sophomore year at Texas and opened with a 69.

“I feel pretty good. It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” he said. “There’s definitely some scores out there to be shot. We’re used to playing short to all these pins, and now we’ve got to worry about controlling our spin. And you’ve really, really got to be on the fairway to attack these pins again.”

Willett, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler could not get off the course soon enough. They played in the same group and were a combined 14 over through 13 holes. Fowler has missed the cut in three of his last five events.

It was evident immediately how much the rain affected the course.

Denny McCarthy, the first to hit a shot in the 116th U.S. Open, struck what he thought was a good approach to No. 1. The fairway slopes sharply downhill to a green that runs away from players, and the typical play is to land it about 25 yards short and let it run onto the green and, hopefully, have it stay there. His shot stopped short of the green.

Dempsey, Zardes lead U.S. into semis

The Associated Press SEATTLE – Clint Dempsey scored for the third straight game and set up Gyasi Zardes for a tap-in goal, boosting the United States into the Copa America semifinals with a 2-1 win over Ecuador on Thursday night.

Playing before a boisterous and almost completely partisan home crowd in the soccer-mad Pacific Northwest, the U.S. won a knockout game against a nation outside its region for only the second time and will play Argentina or Venezuela on Tuesday in Houston.

Dempsey’s 52nd international goal, five behind Landon Donovan’s American record, put the U.S. ahead in the 22nd minute. Zardes guided Dempsey’s cross into the net in the 65th for his

sixth goal and a 2-0 lead.

Michael Arroyo scored for Ecuador in the 74th minute, making for a tense ending, and Enner Valencia missed a pair of great chances moment later on a pair of headers.

A chippy game was costly for the U.S. American midfielder Jermaine Jones was shown a red Clint card during a 52nd-minDempsey ute confrontation that also saw Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia sent off after a second yellow card for a harsh tackle on Alejando Bedoya along the sideline .

U.S. players immediately rushed in to the scrum after Valencia’s tackle, and Jones raised an arm at Arroyo.

mediately showed a red card to Jones.

Jones will be suspended for the semifinal along with U.S. midfielder Alejandro Bedoya and Bobby Wood, who both got their second yellow cards of the tournament. Ecuador coach Gustavo Quinteros also appeared to be sent off late in the match.

The only previous knockout win for the U.S. over a non-CONCACAF team was against Spain in the 2009 Confederations Cup semifinal. The only other U.S. appearance in the Copa semifinals was in 1995, when it advanced to the final four by beating Mexico, then was eliminated by Brazil.

Dempsey appeared energized playing in the home stadium of his Seattle Sounders, and his header provided the U.S. a chance to relax after a tense opening. Wood was tremendous all

Smith blindly dropped a lob pass to a trailing James for a dunk, Quicken Loans shook with noise and thousands of fans packing a plaza outside the building began thinking about where they might watch Game 7.

The Warriors, though, weren’t done.

On the anniversary of their title last season, Thompson made a pair of 3-pointers as Golden State, playing without injured center Andrew Bogut, closed the third quarter with a 25-10 run to pull within 80-71 entering the final 12 minutes.

But James, as he did while winning two titles in Miami, made sure those belonged to him and extended Cleveland’s dream season.

Before taking the floor, James huddled his teammates in prayer the way he does before every game outside the locker room. He then offered some final words.

“Every possession counts. Every possession matters,” he said. “No breakdowns.”

CLEVELAND – LeBron James scored 41 points, Kyrie Irving added 23 and the Cleveland Cavaliers sent the NBA Finals packing for California by beating the rattled Golden State Warriors, 115-101, Thursday night to even this unpredictable series and force a decisive Game 7.

James delivered another epic performance in an elimination game and the Cavs saved their season for the second time in four days and are headed back to Oakland’s Oracle Arena for Sunday’s climactic game on the brink of history.

One more win and they’ll become the first team to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals, and more importantly, give title-starved Cleveland its first major sports championship since Dec. 27, 1964.

“I want to win for sure,” James said.

“But I want to give everything I’ve got, and we’ll see what happens. We forced a Game 7. It’s going to be a fun one.”

The Warriors never imagined being in this spot. The defending champions, who powered their way to a record 73 wins in the regular season, won the first two games by 48 combined points.

But MVP Stephen Curry and Co. have lost their touch, their poise and are in danger of their historic season – and a second title – vanish.

Curry was ejected from Game 6 with 4:22 left after he was called for his sixth personal foul, cursed at an official and fired his mouthpiece into the front row, striking a fan. Curry finished with 30 points, Klay Thompson had 25 and Draymond Green, back from a onegame suspension, had 10 rebounds.

On Wednesday, James called Game 7, “the two best words ever.”

He’ll live them once more, thanks to his spell-binding effort – he had a hand in 27 consecutive points in the second half – and put away the Warriors after they closed a 24-point deficit to seven in the final period. James scored 14 points in the fourth before checking out to a thunderous ovation in the final minutes as Cleveland fans chanted, “Cavs in 7!” and “See you Sunday!”

“At the end of the day, I’m going to give my teammates everything I got,” James said. “I’m going to give my coaching staff all I’ve got. And I’ll be satisfied with the results.”

In typical Cleveland fashion, there were some heart palpitations in the fourth. The Cavs built a 24-point lead in

24 Aerobic exercise is good for the brain Dear Dr. K: I do both aerobic exercises and resistance (strength) training exercises. Recently, I heard aerobic exercise might be better for the brain. Is there any truth to that?

Dear Reader: You probably are referring to a study published in February 2016 that got a lot of media attention. Before getting into the details of that study, it’s worth talking more about exercise and the brain.

It’s no surprise exercising your muscles keeps them (and the heart and lungs) in shape. And it’s no surprise exercising the brain – by doing puzzles, learning a new language, etc. – might keep the brain in shape. What many people don’t know is regular physical exercise also might benefit the brain, along with the muscles, heart and lungs.

The evidence for this is clearest in animals. It is less clear, however, in humans.

For example, studies of people who exercised regularly for eight to 26 weeks could find no clear brain benefit. I would argue, however, you wouldn’t expect to see brain benefits in that short a time.

In fact, this is an example of why it can be so hard to study human beings. Let me explain. If I were to design an ideal study of the effects of exercise on the brain, I would recruit at least a thousand human beings. I’d study their brain function in detail, at the beginning and end of the study, to look for changes.

Then I’d assign them, at random, to either exercise every day or to never exercise – every day, for 10 to 20 years. And I’d check in every day with each of the thousand people, to be sure they were either exercising or not exercising. I think you can see how difficult it would be to

Because human studies are hard, the study you heard about used rats – mammals like us. Their brains are built like ours, although smaller, of course. Rats don’t live long, so you can study them for a good fraction of their life span. And, at the end of the study, you can take out their brains and count the number of brain cells. Humans won’t let you do that.

The study put the rats through one of four programs: regular, sustained aerobic exercise; high-intensity interval training (HIT); resistance training; or just a constant non-exercising (sedentary) state. Upon completion of these programs, researchers counted the number of brain cells in a part of the brain that is important in memory.

The three different types of exercise were compared to the sedentary state.

The regular aerobic exercise group of rats had more brain cells. That was not true of the high-intensity interval training or resistance-training groups.

The question is whether such a study in rats offers lessons to us humans. We just don’t know. But I think it could. So I’ve voted with my feet. Instead of four aerobic and three resistance-training exercises each week, I’ve switched to five and two. Who knows? Maybe it will help.

read your column, and I feel for the people who have problems. I have no worries. Although my life has been far from perfect and no bed of roses, here I am at 95 with no serious physical, spiritual, emotional, family or economic problems.

I grew up during the Depression, had wonderful parents, worked my way through college and was married to a loving woman for 67 years. I have four successful children and their spouses and several industrious grandchildren. I also have met a terrific widow who shares the current daily obstacles.

Service in the Navy during World War II and Korea seemed at the time to limit my future career, but in retrospect were experiences I cherish.

Science has been good to me. My knee replacement still permits tennis, three stents keep me alive, vertebra shots eliminate severe pain and I have had a couple of other minor corrections.

This week, we are looking at covering an honor with an honor ... or not. The basic rule is for the defender to cover the last of touching honors, but only when it might gain a trick.

That is relatively easy to do when dummy leads the honor, but what about when it comes from declarer’s hand? Then the defender might not know which is the first and which is the last of touching honors. My recommendation is: When declarer leads the first honor, play low smoothly.

For example, look at today’s deal from the point of view of declarer.

How should he plan the play in three no-trump after West leads the spade king?

North made a negative double to show four hearts (or perhaps five or six if his hand was too weak for a two-heart response).

Declarer starts with seven top winners: one spade, four diamonds and two clubs. He does not have time to play on hearts, so must hope to collect four club tricks -- but who has the club queen?

Unless playing against experts or defenders who have read this column, there is a reliable method: After winning with his spade ace (presumably on the third round), South should immediately lead the club jack from his hand.

Maybe West will cover an honor with an honor. Or perhaps he will think about it for a while. If, though, he plays low without any hesitation, declarer should win with dummy’s ace and play a club back to his 10.

If West then produces the queen, South should congratulate his opponent on excellent defense.
