Daughter’s request is music to my ears POLL It is so amazing that there is so much to know and so much to do and see in this world. As a busy mama, I try to introduce my toddler to the all the wonderment.

It’s hard to purposefully do this, however. Luckily, the village that helps me raise her also has exposed her to various things.

Hannah Jo already has learned how to count to 10 in Spanish. She also is quite the little artist. She eats a variety of foods. And loves to sing and dance. All types of culture are, organically, being introduced to her, and I couldn’t be happier.

For me, music is one of my favorite wonderments of the world. Music is universal. All over the world, people use it to get in touch with their emotions. My daughter is either bopping her head or trying to sing along with whatever we are listening to. Most of the time, it is nursery rhymes or Disney movie music. Like most parents, we eventually get super sick of it.

Because I like all genres of music, we may listen to anything from Blake Shelton to Madonna. And I prefer my R-rated jams, such as Metallica or Iggy Azalea, in my earbuds at the YMCA. I have been to concerts galore. One of the my most memorable was Prince. It was an electrifying experience. He was profound in his vocals, dancing and appeal. Other girls were tossing their panties and bras up on

All fun aside, when I learned in April that Prince died, I was stunned. This icon has been an anthem in my life for years. At 57, he still had a lot of music-making to do. Before I even thought about it, my daughter and I were jamming out to Prince’s “best-of” CD in the car.

As we were driving home from the YMCA one day, Hannah Jo said, “Rain, Mama, rain.”

I was trying to figure out what she was saying because it wasn’t raining.

Then I had an “a-ha” moment. My dazzling little girl wanted to listen to “Purple Rain.”

It was music to my ears. I am so glad that she enjoys a variety of music. I am so glad one of my favorites is also one of her favorites. But, most of all, I am glad she is growing to know the universal wonderment of music.

TODAY’S TALKER STUDY: OPIOIDS’ DANGER NOT JUST FROM OVERDOSES

CHICAGO – Accidental overdoses aren’t the only deadly risk from using powerful prescription painkillers – the drugs might also contribute to heart-related deaths and other fatalities, new research suggests.

Among more than 45,000 patients in the study, those using opioid painkillers had a 64 percent higher risk of dying within six months of starting treatment compared with patients taking other prescription pain medicine. Unintentional overdoses accounted for about 18 percent of the deaths among opioid users, versus 8 percent of

the other patients.

“As bad as people think the problem of opioid use is, it’s probably worse,” said Wayne Ray, the lead author and a health policy professor at Vanderbilt University’s medical school. “They should be a last resort, and particular care should be exercised for patients who are at cardiovascular risk.”

His caution echoes recent advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, trying to stem the nation’s opioid epidemic. The problem includes abuse of street drugs, such as heroin, and overuse of prescription opioids, such as hydrocodone, codeine and morphine.

School closing ‘example’ cited as D-424 discusses cost cutting

rgillespie@shawmedia.com GENOA – Closing several schools in Genoa-Kingston District 424 is one of several options the school board could consider as part of cost reductions, but it is hardly an action that has been formally brought before the board for consideration, Superintendent Joe Burgess said.

The school chief explained at a Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday that he has received much feedback from residents who attended recent public forums, and a list of suggestions was created that covered myriad issues regarding the district, including cutting costs.

Of the itemized comments and suggestions, he said, the one about closing schools has been the most talked about.

“It was an example,” he said. “I’ve explained that multiple times in multiple meetings, and it still hasn’t stuck that it was [only] an example.”

But at least one school board member said that shuttering at least one of the district’s five schools is a foregone action.

“For me, personally, the closing of a school next year will happen,” said Heather Edwards, who also is the school board secretary. “We have to close a school next year.”

But school board member Kristen Andrews countered, saying that closing a building won’t have a big impact on the district’s budget shortfall.

The schools fiscal woes are due, in part, to declining enrollments and ever-decreasing state aid.

Illinois State Board of Education data show that fewer students have attended schools in the district each year since 2011.

Five years ago, about 2,013 students attended the district’s three elementary schools, and the middle and high schools.

Today, that number has dwindled to just under 1,800. The more than 241-student loss is equivalent to the entire current student head count at Kingston Elementary School.

ISBE data also indicate that Genoa-Kingston lost well over $300,000 in state aid over the past five school years.

2011 school year. That totaled over $5.9 million a year. But by the 2015 school year – the last year for which information currently is available – the monthly payments decreased to around $513,000 a month and $5.6 million for the school year.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has announced a proposal to fully fund public schools without prorating aid.

Under that plan, District 424 would get about $5.8 million, which still is less than what the district received five years ago.

Burgess has started a superintendent’s advisory committee that will come up with ideas for improving financial, educational and operational efficiencies in the district. He announced that the committee, made up of about 20 area residents, will meet in the coming days.

Board members said the committee could offer some fresh ideas for the school board to consider, and could help communicate and educate families on whatever austerity and academic decisions the board ends up making.

“They’re in the community,” board member Kristin Brynteson said. “They know the different types of channels that help inform.”

Among the things officials want the public to understand is that District 424 has a budget deficit, some empty classrooms and unused school building space, and needs to figure out how best to deal with those and other issues.

WW II veteran Joe Bussone, well-known Sycamore volunteer, dies at 89

eolson@shawmedia.com Joe Bussone, a longtime Sycamore resident known for his decades of volunteer work with veterans’ and other nonprofit organizations, died Tuesday.

He was 89.

Bussone joined the Navy at 17, right out of high school, and served from 1944 to 1947 on three different landing ship tanks in the Pacific during World War II. It was an experience, he said, that “made a man out of me in a hurry.”

His civilian career brought him in 1955 to DeKalb, where For more he first worked for General Electric and To read the full later ran his own busiobituary, turn to ness. In Sycamore, page 6. he became known as a person who always was working to promote the efforts of local nonprofits in the community – and that work often meant fundraising.

He regularly would park himself near the intersection of Elm and California streets in downtown Sycamore, where he would sell poppies or other items to raise money. In his honor, the city named a nearby alley “Joe Bussone Boulevard” in 2012.

Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy recalled Bussone’s service with a number of organizations, including the Family Service Agency, Ben Gordon Center, local Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and others.

“He was a busy guy, and he could get things done,” Mundy said. “He was so well-respected that if he was attached to or connected with any kind of effort in the community, he drew immediate respect from any kinds of donors.”

Less than a block from Bussone’s favorite corner, VFW Post 5768 Cmdr.

Herb Holderman was preparing for a board meeting with other officers of the post Tuesday, where Bussone’s passing was certain to be a topic of conversation.

Holderman, a Vietnam War veteran, said he first met Bussone when he joined the Sycamore VFW in 1985.

He had a gift for selling that was part personality and part sincerity, Holderman said.

“You could tell that he honestly cared for what he was doing,” Holderman said. “Like the raffles and stuff, he believed in what he was doing, so it

was very easy for him to sell [tickets] and convince other people of that.”

Bussone was the VFW post commander from 1962 to 1963, and often encouraged and welcomed veterans of all generations, Holderman said.

“He was outspoken, outgoing. Al-

ways willing to share his opinion with you. And, actually, he would listen to yours, then correct you,” Holderman joked. “… He’ll be truly missed, no doubt about that – everybody in town will miss him.”

worthy causes around the area, and last appeared in the Daily Chronicle in November 2014, when he and another local veteran took a day trip to Washington, D.C., to visit veterans memorials there with Honor Flight Chicago.

The veterans were cheered by many people during the trip.

“They thanked me,” Bussone said at the time, “but it was an honor to serve this country and its people.”

Joseph V. Bussone, 89, of Sycamore reunited with his bride Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at the Oakcrest Retirement Center in DeKalb.

He was born Dec. 16, 1926, in Roanoke, IL. The son of Joseph E. and Margarite (Bonetto) Bussone. He married Evelyn M. Search on April 1, 1950, in Peoria, IL. Joe graduated from Bradley University, Peoria, in 1951. He joined General Electric as a product engineer, working in multiple GE locations until settling at the DeKalb plant in 1955.

His GE career spanned 17 years. In 1968, he entered private business; in 1976, he introduced Bussone Engineering Sales Co. Joe was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy, in the South Pacific, from 1944 to ’47.

He was proud of his country, he was proud of his heritage. He and Evelyn made several trips with their family and as a couple of Italy to visit relatives. They enjoyed trips to Hawaii and Alaska and took a break from Illinois winters by enjoying baseball spring training in Arizona!

On a return trip from Canada with the Boy Scouts, Joe found Chetek, WI. He declared to Evelyn, he had found “Heaven” (aka, a great fishing hole). An avid fisherman, Joe and Evelyn and their family enjoyed summertime in Chetek for over 50 years.

Joe was a member of the Sycamore VFW, Knights of Columbus – 4th degree, Rotary, Lifetime member of Kiwanis and National Society of Professional Engineers and many others. He served on multiple boards, including serving as the first president for the Ben Gordon Center. His fundraising efforts, raffle ticket sales, to benefit countless charities, were never a burden for Joe! Survivors include his son, Paul (Sheila) Bussone of Peoria, IL, and Chetek, WI; daughter, Susan (Steven) Ohde of Chetek; five grandchildren, Mitchell Bussone of St. Louis, MO, Jared Bussone of Grayslake, IL, Eric, Rachel and Alex Ohde of Chetek. Further survived by several nieces, nephews and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Dominic and James; wife, Evelyn in 2013; son, Mark Joseph in 1981.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m.

Friday, June 17, at the Church of St. Mary, 244 Waterman St., Sycamore, with the Rev. Frank J. Timar, M.S.C. officiating. Burial will follow at Mntount Carmel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory in Sycamore, with a wake service being recited at 7 p.m.

E. Ferrell Durham, 82 of Sycamore, passed into his Eternal Rest on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at Kishwaukee Hospital surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Born Sept. 4, 1933, in Marion, IL, he was the son of Ernest and Helen (White) Durham. He married Darlene L. Burgess on Sept. 15, 1957, at the Broadway Methodist Church in Sterling, IL. They lived in the Sterling area and he was employed at the Eller & Willey Block Company in Dixon, IL. In 1961 they moved to the Sycamore/DeKalb area and he was the manager of the DeKalb Block Company for almost 30 years. He later worked at the Secretary of State and the Veterans Affairs offices in DeKalb. He also drove for a limousine service before working and retiring from the Genoa post office in the mid-1990s.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War conflict from Jan. 28, 1952 to Aug. 31, 1956. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5768 in Sycamore. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 54, in Elgin, IL. He served on the Malta School Board, Town Board and was a member of the Malta Lions Club. He was a certified scuba diving instructor. He was also a member of The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John in Sycamore.

Ferrell will be remembered for his unique sense of humor and his love and devotion to his family. He enjoyed many hobbies with family and friends such as camping, fishing, building and flying model airplanes, skeet shooting, spending time with friends at the local coffee shops and most of all spending time with his loving family.

He is survived by his wife Darlene; two daughters, Lisa (Peter) Clark of DeKalb, and Allyson (Marc) Davis of Streamwood, IL.; grandchildren Jay Clark and Lindsey Clark, and two stepgrandchildren Ashley (Nate) Preston and Justin Davis, two sisters, Marilyn Devine and Rosie (Gene) Donoho ; sister-in-law Joyce Volk, all of Dixon, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal/paternal grandparents, mother/fatherin-law, two brother-in-laws, one sister-in-law and two nephews.

A visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2016, at The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John, 26555 Brickville Road, Sycamore, IL. A Christian funeral service will be at 11 a.m.

Jan. 15 to the downtown Genoa bank for a report of a robbery. A man reportedly entered the bank, brandished a handgun and demanded money from a teller. The suspect was described as being 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a stocky

build and blond hair. He was wearing a tan baseball cap with a white front and had a red mark on his right upper cheek near his eye. At the time, officers believed the man left the bank in a newer-model black Dodge pickup truck.

Matthew L. Lenz, 31, of the 200 block of Panama Avenue, was dead at the scene when police and fire officials arrived, according to a news release. Lenz was an employee at Adkins Milk Hauling, 33473 Genoa Road, where the incident occurred.

Lenz was trying to hook up the tank to the semitractor when it sank in the gravel and landed on him, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, DeKalb County Coroner’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were investigating the incident.

‘Tuesdays on the Town’ offers close-up look at trucks

SYCAMORE – For some children, there’s nothing more exciting than getting up close and personal with a firetruck, police car, tow truck or SWAT vehicle.

And that’s exactly what Sycamore children were able to do Tuesday at the “Touch a Truck” event at this month’s “Tuesdays on the Town,” which is sponsored by the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce.

This was the second Tuesdays on the Town event this year. It is held in downtown Sycamore on the second Tuesday from May through September, with a different theme each month.

Diane Breunlin, finance and membership coordinator at the Sycamore Chamber, said Tuesdays on the Town began in 2012 and has been a big hit with the community every year.

“It brings the community out, helps the farmer’s market, helps retailers and creates a buzz,” she said. “To me, this is like a staycation for people who can’t get away, and it gives the kids something to do.”

Ethan Keicher, 9, of Sycamore has been going to various Touch a Truck events for years and was excited for Tuesday’s event. He always has liked cars and enjoys being able to sit inside them.

“I like the SWAT truck, because it’s strong and big and armored. It’s my favorite, because I like cops,” he said.

This is the first year the SWAT vehicle has been at Sycamore’s Touch a Truck. Jonas Shook from the Illinois State Police North SWAT Team was

giving children tours of the truck, which was a big hit with the children.

Shook said all the kids were impressed and excited about the truck.

“We like to show the community what we do – it’s good for community relations and good to have positive relationships with kids so they know we’re not scary,” he said.

Tryggve Vilaseca of Sycamore also was impressed with the SWAT vehicle.

The 10-year-old said he came with his family to the farmers market and just happened to see all the trucks.

“I wanted to check this out once I saw all the flashing lights,”he said. “I think they’re all really cool, and tall and big.”

Kids weren’t the only ones who were in awe of the trucks. Ron Klacik of Sycamore said he was impressed with the variety of vehicles.

“I’m a fan of big trucks,” said Klacik, who brought his three kids to the event. “The kids wanted to see the trucks, too. They’re all much cleaner than I expected.”

Ian Wheeler, fire prevention coordinator of the Sycamore Fire Department, said the department has participated in the Touch a Truck event every year, and he always looks forward to seeing the children. Kids were able to get inside a fire engine and ambulance, and they were able to spray water from the engine into a playhouse with pretend fire in the windows.

“We want the kids to see how friendly we are when they see us, so if they need help, they can call on us,” he said.

“This event is a good way for them to meet us and find out who we are. I always have a blast and love seeing the expressions on the kids’ faces.”

SYCAMORE – Sycamore School District 427 board members will take an official position June 28 on whether to support a petition to annex 168 acres into the school district.

The board further reviewed the petition at a special meeting Tuesday, where some of the board’s main concerns about annexing the land seemed to subside.

“I didn’t see anything offensive in there, or any kind of smoking gun, or anything that would be problematic,” board President Jim Dombek said.

Residents of 12 homes along Coltonville Road between First Street and the South Branch of the Kishwaukee River have submitted a petition to the Regional Board of Education asking to be annexed from DeKalb School District 428 to Sycamore District 427.

Since the homes have Sycamore mailing addresses – although they fall just inside DeKalb School District 428’s boundaries – there already is a District 427 bus capable of transporting them without having to make new accommodations, Sycamore Superintendent Kathy Countryman said Tuesday.

The area has no planned land use, although land on the north side of the road, where the houses are located, is zoned residential, and the property on the south side of the road is zoned agricultural, school board documents show.

Most of the 100-acre parcel on the

east side of the property is in a flood plain, DeKalb County Planning Director Paul Miller has said.

Although the property is within the county, it would need to be annexed to either Sycamore or DeKalb if development were to occur, Miller said.

“A majority of it is a flood plain, so probably not much is going to go there,” Dombek said during Tuesday’s meeting.

At least one of the property owners believes being within District 427 boundaries would make her house more marketable, and although there currently are no school-age children living in the area, one of the petitioners, Audra Cronauer, has two young children.

But the cities are too different from one another to continue shopping and going to church in one, and sending their kids to school in another, she said.

“Unfortunately, unless the districts were to consolidate – which is unlikely – DeKalb is a completely different community to be associated with, and we all have Sycamore ingrained in us as being our home,” she said. “As for me, being a mom to two young children, being in a situation where my children’s religious, social and extracurricular activities will be in a community that is outside where they attend school is concerning.”

The school board will choose June 28 whether to support or oppose the request with a resolution, or submit a letter to the Regional Board of Education expressing a neutral stance.

Firefighters rescue 2 from DeKalb apartment blaze

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Firefighters rescued two people trapped inside an apartment building during a fire Tuesday that displaced 25 people and caused an estimated $200,000 in damage.

Firefighters were called shortly before 9 a.m. to 920 Greenbrier Road for a fire in the two-story, 14-unit 920 Greenbrier Apartments building on Greek Row near Northern Illinois University.

When firefighters arrived, smoke and fire were coming from a second-story unit at the rear of the building. Firefighters used a ladder to rescue two people from the second story, DeKalb Fire Chief Eric Hicks said. No one was injured.

The two people who were rescued were evaluated in an ambulance at the scene, but neither was taken to the hospital. A firefighter also was evaluated for possible injury, but wasn’t taken to the hospital, according to a news release.

Tiffany Bibbs, 34, was getting ready to leave an apartment when she heard someone down the hall screaming.

When she went out into the hallway, it was filled with black smoke. She yelled “fire” to alert other residents before ushering her three children to safety.

She said she didn’t hear a fire alarm.

Treasurer: Budget fight cuts monthly investment profit

CHICAGO – Illinois loses about $2.6 million each month in investment income because of the state budget impasse, Treasurer Michael Frerichs said Tuesday, describing how his office has changed investment strategies as the unprecedented impasse approaches a second year.

The state’s chief investment officer said the “more cautious” strategy means shorter-term investments instead of more lucrative longer-term ones, alterations made last summer when Democrats controlling the Legislature and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner failed to agree on a budget for the fiscal year that began in July. The impasse is approaching a year and there are few signs there’ll be an agreement anytime soon for the new fiscal year.

Firefighters worked to contain the fire to the unit and attic area. They were able to get the fire under control in about 20 minutes, but remained at the building for several hours to make sure it was out. The unit where the fire started had extensive fire and smoke

damage. There was moderate smoke and water damage to the majority of the apartment building, according to a news release.

CHICAGO – A federal judge has ruled against the Federal Trade Commission’s request to block the merger of Advocate Health Care and North Shore University Health System.

U.S. District Judge Jorge Alonso’s ruling was announced Tuesday. It means the creation of Advocate North Shore Health Partners can move forward. It would serve more than 3 million patients a year.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and the FTC sought to block the merger. The FTC said in December after a 15-month review that a merger would raise prices by reducing competition in

Chicago-area mosques threatened after shootings

CHICAGO – Muslim mosques in and around Chicago report receiving threats in the wake of the weekend shootings in an Orlando nightclub that left 49 people dead.

As a result of the threats, Hani Atassi of the Mecca Center in Willowbrook says the center is reinstalling a security fence around the facility. Atassi says the barrier was removed two weeks ago. However, hostile emails and “a lot of fearful members of our community” have prompted its return.

Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago chairman Mohammed Kaiseruddin and others offered condolences to those killed by Omar Mateen.

The 29-year-old U.S. citizen professed his allegiance to the Islamic State in calls to 911 during the attack at Pulse nightclub.

The American Red Cross of Northwest Illinois was working to help those affected by the fire. The nonprofit group gave the displaced residents money for emergency food and clothing assistance. The agency also provided financial assistance to those who didn’t have a place to stay, said Lisa LaSala, executive director of the American Red Cross of Northwest Illinois.

Jason Walters, a Red Cross disaster program manager, said many of those who were displaced were children.

Walters and six volunteers worked with residents to make sure they had what they needed after the fire. He said the Red Cross also would follow up with residents in a few days.

Firefighters from Sycamore, Malta, Cortland, Maple Park, Shabbona, Elburn and Genoa-Kingston responded to the call to help. The DeKalb and NIU police departments also assisted.

“It’s a big building and a really hot day, so we called in extra people,” Hicks said.

Investigators still were working Tuesday afternoon to determine the cause of the fire, officials said.

Kaiseruddin said the emailed threats resulting from the shooting early Sunday were forwarded to the FBI.

Suburban man charged with false hostage report

BEACH PARK – A suburban Chicago man is accused of falsely reporting in a 911 call that someone had shot his mother and sister, and was holding his father hostage.

A Monday statement from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said 51-yearold Robert Bruckner of Beach Park is charged with disorderly conduct – a Class 4 felony. He was being held on $10,000 bail.

Bruckner called 911 on Sunday to report the alleged attacks and to say someone had a gun to his father’s head.

Deputies arrived at his Beach Park residence and moved in only to find it empty. They later learned Bruckner’s relatives were safe in Wisconsin.

The sheriff’s office says Bruckner offered no explanation. There was no answer Monday at a residential telephone number for Bruckner.

His next court hearing is Thursday.

FBI looks at whether Fla. gunman led secret gay life

ORLANDO, Fla. – The murky picture of Orlando gunman Omar Mateen grew more complex Tuesday with word that the FBI is investigating whether he had been a regular at the gay dance club he attacked and had been leading a secret life as a gay man.

As victims described the bloody horror of the massacre during a riveting hospital news conference, investigators continued to gather information on the 29-year-old American-born Muslim – and took a close look at his wife, too – for clues to the attack that left 49 victims dead.

An official who was briefed on the progress of the case but insisted on anonymity to discuss a continuing investigation said authorities believe Mateen’s wife knew about the plot ahead of time, but they are reluctant to charge her on that basis alone.

A number of possible explanations and motives for the bloodbath have emerged, with Mateen professing allegiance to the Islamic State group in a 911 call during the attack, his ex-wife saying he was mentally ill, and his father suggesting he was driven by hatred of gays.

On Tuesday, a U.S. official said the FBI is looking into a flurry of news reports quoting patrons of the Pulse as saying that Mateen frequented the nightspot and reached out to men on gay dating apps. The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Some psychologists raised the possibility that Mateen was sexually conflicted and

lashed out against gays, or that he was casing the nightclub for an attack and trying to find victims online.

Jim Van Horn, 71, told The Associated Press that he saw Mateen repeatedly at the bar and talked to him once.

“He was a homosexual and he was trying to pick up men,” Van Horn said. “He would walk up to them and then he would maybe put his arm around ’em or something and maybe try to get them to dance a little bit or something.”

The attack early Sunday ended with Mateen being shot to death by a SWAT team. Of the 53 people wounded, six were listed in critical condition Tuesday and five others were in guarded condition.

At a news conference at Orlando Regional Medical Center, shooting survivor Patience Carter described praying to die as she lay on a nightclub bathroom floor covered in water and blood. She said Mateen talked about wanting the U.S. to “stop bombing my country,” a possible reference to his father’s native Afghanistan.

“I really don’t think I’m going to get out of there,” Carter, 20, recalled. “I made peace with God. ‘Just please take me. I don’t want any more.’ I was just begging God to take the soul out my body.”

In Washington, President Barack Obama said investigators had no information to suggest a foreign terrorist group directed the attack. He said it was increasingly clear the killer “took in extremist information and propaganda over the Internet. He appears to have been an angry, disturbed, unstable young man who became radicalized.”

New overtime rules will hurt workers

President Ronald Reagan was famous for saying, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.’ ” Another Reaganism might be appropriate after the U.S. Department of Labor announced its new rules governing salaried workers and overtime: “There you go again.”

In one fell swoop, the Labor Department threw a massive federal monkey wrench into how small- and medium-sized businesses typically operate, which has left them scrambling to figure out how to comply by Dec. 1, when the rule takes effect.

Specifically, the Labor Department’s new rule deals with overtime exemptions.

The salary threshold for overtime pay basically will be doubled from $23,660 (established in 2004) to $47,476.

So, those who are salaried and earn less than $47,476 a year will become eligible for overtime pay, regardless of their duties.

The Labor Department sees the new rule as a boost to salaried workers who routinely work more than 40 hours a week. Such employees typically are found in restaurants, retail stores, landscaping and moving companies, The Associated Press reported. In all, about 4.2 million salaried workers would be affected.

However, the government’s action won’t necessarily raise the income of those millions of Americans.

Then there is the law of unintended consequences.

Business owners can’t just magically conjure up more revenue to pay their employees more money.

Instead, they might react by converting more of their workers to part time.

They might react by reducing available hours for employees.

They might react by reducing some salaried workers to hourly status, which more than a few employees might interpret as a comedown.

U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, opposes the new rule.

He co-sponsored a bill in the House to nullify it.

“Unfortunately, I believe this requirement will ultimately cause salaried employees to revert to hourly employees and lose benefits they would otherwise enjoy,” Kinzinger said.

Businesses don’t like uncertainty. They also don’t like huge changes. The magnitude of the salary threshold increase certainly was a shocker.

One area inadequately addressed includes various differences in businesses that will be affected by the new rule. A salary threshold of $47,476, applied across the board, seems just like something someone from the government’s One Size Fits All Department would promulgate.

Fair compensation is one thing.

A blanket rule that shakes up how thousands of small businesses do business is quite another.

Government officials might protest that they’re only trying to help.

Hah! There they go again.

What free speech really means Whatever happened to freedom of speech?

Not much, actually. It works about the same now as it always has, save for a few decisions made by the Supreme Court.

However, it’s a question we hear often.

The simplest explanation is that the constitutional right to free speech, in most cases, protects you from censorship or prosecution by the government. It doesn’t protect you from all consequences.

The most common point of confusion about this particular right is that it does not protect you from ridicule. If others disagree with something you say, they also have the freedom of speech to tell you they disagree.

It also doesn’t protect you from being fired, usually.

And that’s a somewhat sticky point in the story that has made this question of free speech come up most recently.

A Rockaway Beach, Missouri, alderman, Thom Borchert, has come under some fire because of racist, homophobic and transphobic comments he has made on social media.

In interviews ... he’s mostly reinforced those comments.

The mayor of Rockaway Beach has said he and the other aldermen will seek a way to remove Borchert from office if he doesn’t step down.

Several readers have come to Borchert’s defense – not to defend his views, but to defend his right to share them.

If Borchert worked for a private company, it easily could fire him for comments the company deems inappropriate. According to Missouri law, fourth-class cities such as Rockaway Beach can remove an elected official from office with a two-thirds vote of the body,

as long as it shows cause.

Back to the original question of freedom of speech. There are a few things the Constitution doesn’t protect you from. Some of the most common include: • Threatening people with violence.

• Using so-called “fighting words,” such as those that are so inflammatory as to cause violence.

• Speech that incites “imminent lawless action.” You can get in trouble for yelling “fire” in a theater that is not on fire.

• Obscenities.

However, proving that speech falls under one of the exceptions is difficult. In most cases, speech goes unpunished.

Generally, there is strong protection for speech in the United States, and it’s something Americans appreciate and demand.

A 2015 Pew Research study found that Americans were more likely than people in most other countries to support freedom of speech on a variety of topics – including speech that is offensive to minority groups.

Again, that’s the right to speak without censorship or prosecution from the government.

It’s not absolute protection from your employer, colleagues or the rest of the internet.

Our freedom of speech still is working.

We’re not being thrown in jail for disagreeing with the government. No one is restricting your internet access. And you’re still welcomed, and encouraged, to send your opinions to this newspaper, so you can show off your freedom of speech to our readers.

Just be aware that our readers may take advantage of their own rights to tell you what they think.

I was terrified of it, I didn’t know what had been in it, if it had been contaminated, who had touched it. I wanted to take off my body like a jacket and leave it at the hospital with everything else.”

Turner’s father, Dan, also offered a statement, pleading for leniency for his son. “His life will never be the one that he dreamed about and worked so hard to achieve. That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20-plus years of life.”

Turner was facing up to 14 years in prison. Judge Aaron Persky gave him the aforementioned six. Months.

A harsher sentence “would have a severe impact on him,” the judge said.

Persky’s compassion for the rapist – and lack thereof for the victim – has detonated social media like a bomb.

People are furious. They are weeping.

They are calling Turner a “monster.”

At this writing, a petition at Change.org demanding Persky’s recall stands north of 900,000 signatures.

Which brings us to the second six.

The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network said that one woman in every six has been the victim of an attempted or completed sexual assault. It’s an awesome, awful number. Think about it in terms of women you know. Think about Bonnie, Kadijah, Heather, Consuela, Sarah and Kim. One, two, three, four, five ...

Six. Maybe she’s never told you about it, so maybe you think it didn’t – couldn’t – have happened, not to one of your six.

But the numbers are what the numbers are. Maryum, Stephanie, Yumiko, Keshia, Laurie ... and Pam. One, two, three, four, five ...

And six.

It’s not a big number. You were counting past it in kindergarten.

For an American woman, it’s a measure of the danger she faces from predatory men who consider her body to be their right. It is the difference

between self-confidence and fear.

For Turner’s victim, it is a measure of the value the justice system placed on her trauma – and on her. It is the difference between the free woman she was and the frightened one she has become.

For Turner, it is the fraction of his life he’s been ordered to pay for the arrogant violation of another person’s self. It is the difference between spring and fall.

And here’s the final six: According to RAINN, only six in every 1,000 perpetrators of sexual assault end up in prison.

If you are a woman, or a man who cares about women, you ought to seethe, and then you ought to do whatever you can to fix a culture that makes possible a Brock Turner – and an Aaron Persky. Because, either way you look at it, the value of six is small – too small for safety, too small for solace.

And way too small for justice.

Racking up debt easier than digging out from under SPRINGFIELD – I opened my credit card bill last month and gasped.

There were $3,570 in charges I did not recognize, and each charge was for something from Apple computers iTunes division.

I asked my wife, Joan, and she said, “It wasn’t me.”

I asked my 10- and 8-year-old daughters, and they gave perplexed looks and shook their heads.

Then I asked my 5-year-old, Caitlin, who gave me a snaggletooth grin and said, “Yes, Daddy, I’ve been buying stuff for my video game.”

Um, $3,570 worth of stuff in one month?

It’s pretty hard to be upset with a preschooler who doesn’t yet know how to add, subtract, read or count past 100 – yet alone to 3,570.

Despite the parental controls I’d put on my child’s iPad and despite ensuring she played only age-appropriate games, she somehow had managed to rack up the charges.

So I’ve spent the last month calling Apple, beseeching them to please

After a month of groveling, Apple finally released me from the debt and emailed me a complex set of instructions on how to set up Caitlin’s iPad so this never would happen again.

If only it were so easy for Illinois taxpayers to get out from under the staggering debt that lawmakers have been racking up for decades.

According to my former colleagues at the Illinois Policy Institute, our state has debt of $206 billion. That equates to $16,000 for every man, woman and child in the Land of Lincoln.

How did we get in this predicament? Pretty much the same way my household did last month. My preschooler can’t read, but many Illinois lawmakers don’t read.

And it’s often because they aren’t

given a chance.

For decades, Illinois lawmakers have voted on multibillion-dollar budgets that landed on their desk minutes before they were expected to vote. No one had time to read the budget in its entirety.

That’s how House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, has run his chamber for decades. He treats rank-and-file members as if they are mushrooms. He keeps them in the dark as long as possible, then shovels them some manure.

Last month, Madigan forced House members to vote on a $40 billion spending bill that they first saw only minutes before the vote.

The measure passed the House – but, fortunately, it was rejected by the Senate.

We don’t elect our state representatives to rubber-stamp what the speaker of the House – or the governor – wants. But that’s all they can do if they aren’t given a chance to read what they are voting on.

My youngest daughter can’t add

or subtract yet. Apparently, some members of the Illinois House are challenged in the arithmetic department as well.

The spending bill passed by the House spends at least $7 billion more than the state expects to take in this year. Anyone who ever has balanced a personal checkbook knows that your expenses can’t be greater than your deposits.

But, apparently, some folks in the Illinois General Assembly haven’t figured that out yet.

As a parent, I should have paid more attention to what my daughter was doing on her iPad. And, as voters, we need to pay more heed to what those we elect do in Springfield.

And at the end of the day, that’s all we can do – hold our lawmakers accountable.

This is a column about the value of six.

Actually, it’s about three individual sixes and their respective values. The first six came after a 23-year-old woman – her name never has been revealed – spoke in court to address the man who raped her last year, who took her out behind the dumpsters and penetrated her with his fingers after she had too much to drink and passed out at a party.

He might have gone further, except that he was spotted by two passersby who tackled him when he tried to run.

“You don’t know me,” she told 20-year-old Brock Turner, a former student at Stanford University, an Olympic hopeful in swimming, “but you’ve been inside me, and that’s why we’re here today.”

She spoke of the rape and its aftermath, including the fact that that awful night a year and a half ago has left her sleeping with the lights on “like a 5-year-old.” In her statement (which you can – and should – read at Buzzfeed. com) the woman describes how it felt, after a long and invasive rape exam, to finally be alone with herself in the

An antique German cup marked with a British import mark for 1908 was sold by New Orleans Auctions in 2015 for $522. To get a cup for a bride to use today, check antique sales and shops. A number are sold each year and there are even new ones available. *** Q: I have a Worley Water Waver. It’s a device for curling or waving ladies’ hair that was invented by my Grandad in 1926. I also have the original patent that was issued to him in 1927. Hair could be curled in a “Marcel” wave, a popular style of the day, by pressing it against the wavy surface of the steel chamber that held hot water. It was a forerunner of the modern curling iron. But not many were made because the financial backers of the project went under with the stock market crash. After the crash, my Grandfather moved from the northeast to Florida-and with a supply of the wavers, which he sold as he traveled down the highways. The cords were removed because they were sold to women on farms where electricity wasn’t very common, but putting hot water in the chamber still curled the hair!

A: Klumpe is one of several companies in Barcelona that made molded felt dolls dressed in Spanish costumes for the tourist trade in Spain from 1952 until the 1970s. The felt is molded over wire, making the dolls posable.

A: Old books don’t sell well unless they are first editions or are rare and there isn’t much interest in old magazines. Keep them intact and take them to a used book store to see what you can get for them. They may not be interested in the magazines, but will give you a price for the books. Expect to get half the price

THE HEART OF A CHAMPION DeKalb’s Savannah Long caps career with a state title

eKALB – It wasn’t too long after her freshman year at DeKalb when Savannah Long first saw

Driving around with her family in 2013, Long noticed a new green traffic sign telling any passer-by that DeKalb was home to triple jump state champion Jasmine Brown. They got out of the car to take a picture with the sign, and Long asked her mother, Mandy, what turned out to be a somewhat prophetic question.

“Do you think I can ever get a sign like that?” she asked.

Three years later, that long forgotten memory has come back to the surface after Long won the Class 3A state championship in the 300-meter hurdles May 21 in Charleston – becoming the third DeKalb girls track and field athlete to win a state title, securing one of those coveted green traffic signs and being named the Daily Chronicle Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

“We actually didn’t realize we had that moment until after I won state when [my mom] said, ‘Remember that

had spent the past year tirelessly working on her conditioning – with Green’s tough practices causing her to jokingly admit there were days she didn’t like her coach. When she lined up for the final race of her prep career, her mind went back to those miserable workouts.

“I thought about over the summer and all the practices the past year that made me go, ‘Oh my gosh, I hate track.’ I really didn’t, but just the practices suck sometimes,” she said.

“I have a book, and every time I have a practice like that, I write down everything and nobody else reads it. Before my race, I read the book and it has all the things I did during practice, so it reminds myself that I didn’t do all of this for nothing.

Bryant not interested in competing in HR derby

WASHINGTON – You might see Jake Arrieta in an All-Star Home Run Derby before you see Kris Bryant in another one.

In fact, if internal MLB discussions regarding a potential pitcher’s homer derby gain momentum in the coming weeks, Arrieta might be the only Cub doing an exhibition home run contest during All-Star week in July.

Bryant, who joined Cubs teammate Anthony Rizzo in last year’s Derby in Cincinnati, said he plans to decline this year if asked to participate again.

Rizzo said he’s “undecided.”

“All I know is it was tough. It was very exhausting,” Bryant said. “And I don’t know if I’d want to do it again.

But if [the pitchers] want to, we’ll let them do it.

“I don’t really want to.”

Bryant entered play Tuesday night tied for sixth in the league with 15 home runs. Rizzo had 14.

Even if both decline, Cubs fans might still get their representative swinging for the fences during festivities the day before the July 12 All-Star game.

Internal talk regarding a potential pitchers’ derby hasn’t reached a serious stage, but sources suggest if it comes together, the event would start with this year’s All-Star week in San Diego.

Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner and Cubs ace Arrieta have been especially vocal about their desires to participate. The Mets’ Noah Syndergaard and the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright also have chimed in with support.

“You talk to a lot of people that don’t like the pitchers to hit, but we love it,” Arrieta said, referring also to Bumgarner. “We take it really seriously.

“People think we can’t hit. Let’s show you we can swing a little bit.”

If Arrieta is in a homer derby, count on Bryant to be there in support.

“I enjoy watching the home run derby. Growing up I watched it all the time,” Bryant said. “It’s very entertaining. I’ll sit on the grass, do the whole bring-the-Gatorade thing. But I don’t really want to do it.”

Not that the event wasn’t fun, he said.

“It was a cool experience,” Bryant said. “It was just mentally draining for me, whereas I don’t know if I really got to enjoy the moment as much as I should have.”

Arrieta, who has the longest home run for a pitcher this season, dismissed all the downside talk, from injury risk to the exhaustion factor – even if he were tapped to start the game the next day.

“It’ll get me loose,” he said.

Kick spring to the ‘Curb’? HBO no sooner announced plans to bring back “Curb Your Enthusiasm” after a fiveyear hiatus than one of its stars, Cubs fan Jeff Garlin, speaking on ESPN AM1000 on Tuesday, re-issued his intention of getting Cubs manager Joe Maddon a guest spot on an episode.

“I haven’t been contacted yet,” said a smiling Maddon, who embraced the guest-appearance idea when Garlin brought it up when they hung out last spring at the ballpark in San Diego.

“If he said he’s going to make it happen, then we’ll make it happen,” said Maddon, who was informed the production schedule might conflict with the first week or so of spring training.

“I could miss that,” he deadpanned, delegating to bench coach Dave Martinez. “David’s got it.”

Asked if he would play himself on the show, Maddon said, “I want to play Larry David. Or I’ll probably be Bernie Sanders, one of the two.”

WASHINGTON – Albert Almora Jr. drove in the go-ahead run with a ninth-inning double, Dexter Fowler had two hits and the Cubs defeated the Washington Nationals, 4-3, Tuesday night.

Addison Russell led off the ninth with a walk from Sammy Solis (1-2) and was sacrificed to second before Almora, who entered the game in the eighth inning, lined a shot to left center.

Jason Heyward provided a two-run single for the Cubs, who evened the three-game series between division leaders.

Washington, which had won four straight, tied it in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Rendon off closer Hector Rondon.

Rondon (1-1) pitched the final 12/3 innings for the win.

Washington was without closer Jonathan Papelbon, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right intercostal strain.

What is Lurry planning for an encore?

Item No. 1: What’s Northern Illinois University junior Shawun Lurry planning for an encore in 2016? More pass interceptions, more NCAA rankings, more All-America honors?

He led the NCAA FBS level with nine interceptions for 273 yards (30.3-yard return average) and one touchdown last fall in 14 games. Lurry obliterated some of the local record books last season.

Has there ever been a more prolific Huskie aerial pickpocket than No. 19?

That answer: Well, yes and no.

Consider this: the NIU interception marks for a single game (four, by Dan Mojica vs. Illinois State in 1951, and Dan Meyer vs. Hillsdale in 1966), single season (10, by Al Jones in 1951) and career (16, by Meyer in 1964-66) still belong to College Division-era old-timers (who you calling an old-timer, Korcek?).

Today’s younger, faster players are making their impact.

That said, Lurry’s nine “picks” do represent a school-best since the move to Division I in 1969, exceeding the seven by both cornerback Randee Drew (2002) and free safety Jimmie Ward (2013).

What’s really astounding? Curry’s 273 single-season interception return yardage not only set Mid-American Conference (by 53 yards) and NIU (by 124 yards) standards, fell only 29 yards short of tying the NCAA FBS mark (302, by Southern Cal safety Charles Phillips in 1974), but still eclipsed Meyer’s three-year career – yes, career – Huskies mark (by 13 yards).

Stepping in front of a receiver for a pick is one thing; doing it twice in a game and returning them for combined 45 yards against then No. 1-ranked Ohio State is another. Only two players returned two interceptions in one game vs. the Buckeyes last year – Lurry and Western

Depending on what side of the international dateline you’re on, the California-Hawaii football season opener will be played either Aug. 26 or 27 at ANZ Stadium in Sydney, Australia. The 83,500-seat ANZ Stadium, of course, was the centerpiece for the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics. Not exactly a drive down Interstate 88, is it?

Item No. 3: From The-Some-ThingsNever-Change-But-Only-Get-Worse Department: Only two “Group of Five” players made the Sporting News preseason First- and Second-Team All-America squads – a placekicker from Memphis and a punter from Colorado State. No respect for the mid-majors. Among the top 50 performers, Alabama led the way with seven selections. (Hint: Maybe somebody at the Sporting News should read Item No. 1. Just a suggestion.) In TSN preseason Top 25 team rankings, the news wasn’t any better. Only one “Group of Five” program (Houston at No. 14) cracked the list.

Item No. 4: This is why the elite level of college football is termed the Driving the bus back to DeKalb, with a police escort waiting for the Barbs’ state champion after getting off Interstate 88, Green got Long back into town in time for her to make the final hour of the school’s prom, allowing her to wear her first-place medal around her neck for the function.

“We were driving back from Eastern and her sister, Sierra, was doing her makeup and hair,” Green laughs.

“The team’s helping and saying, ‘Coach Green, stop hitting the bumps in the road.’ ”

“Power 5.” Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium opens 2016 with an NCAA-record 347 consecutive game sellout streak.

Think about it. At seven home games a year, that’s almost 50 seasons. For the record, the Cornhuskers’ Memorial Stadium seats 85,000.

Even with the spiraling costs involved with college football and the revenue disparity between the football “haves” and “have-nots,” two programs will enter the FBS ranks in 2017. UAB will rejoin Conference USA next season. If you recall, six months after dropping the sport in 2015, the Blazers reinstated it (how much did that cost?).

Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina becomes a Sun Belt Conference member in football next year. A former Big South Conference program, the Chanticleers will play an all-FCS schedule in 2016 and build to the FBS-required 85 scholarships by 2017. Coastal Carolina started football in 2003.

Item No. 6: Win or lose, Western Illinois already had won the unofficial state college football championship.

In this day and age, when our instate schools (and former Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Association

rivals) rarely speak or schedule each other, the Leathernecks will play four state opponents in football this season – NIU (Sept. 24), Eastern Illinois (Sept.

3), Illinois State (Nov. 5) and Southern Illinois (Nov. 19). Could we please duplicate this in men’s basketball? Soon?

Item No. 7: Anyone see the recent announcement by Kent State athletics director Joel Nielsen – a former NIU staffer – that the Golden Flashes will be adding a 19th varsity sport, women’s lacrosse, in the 2018-19 academic year?

Currently, 111 NCAA institutions sponsor women’s lacrosse. The only other MAC school with such a program is Central Michigan. Interesting development at a time when mid-majors consider cutting costs (and sports). The proposed annual KSU women’s lacrosse sport budget is $500,000 for staff, equipment and scholarships.

Says he’s trained to try to prevent another injury-filled season

on the field, Jeffery proved he’s a coverage-dictating true No. 1 wideout, averaging more than 100 receiving yards a start, but coach John Fox always stresses that availability is paramount – even more so than performance.

“Me and coach Fox have a great relationship,” said Jeffery, who chatted with his coach May 28 at Wrigley Field, where he threw out the first pitch and sang during the seventh-inning stretch. “I don’t think it’s a problem or nothing.”

Fox wouldn’t expound on his relationship with Jeffery – which some

dealing with injuries, and each and every game you weren’t for sure if he was 100 percent, if he could go.

“And you didn’t really know until he kind of got going how he felt. So just being more consistent in that area, I think that’s kind of his focus, on making sure physically he can go for 16 games. Because if we got him 100 percent for 16 games, he’s going to do some damage.”

For his part, Jeffery, who started 32 consecutive games from 2013 to ’14 and posted more than 80 catches and 1,100 yards each season, called last year’s injury struggles part of the game.

“There’s a 99 percent chance you’re going to get hurt,” Jeffery said, adding he thinks he did some things training on his own to address last year’s injuries.

What are the chances Jeffery, who said he “plans” on reporting for training camp, being unhappy if he doesn’t get a long-term deal before then?

“I’ll let that situation take care of itself,” he said. “I’m just here to play football. I’m under contract. I’m focused on football and the Bears organization.”

LAKE FOREST – Alshon Jeffery joined his teammates for the first time this offseason Tuesday to take part in the team’s mandatory veteran minicamp.

Jeffery, who already has signed the franchise tag and is slated to earn $14.59 million in 2016 if the two sides don’t come to a long-term agreement before July 15, skipped the voluntary portion of offseason work to train on his own in South Florida.

“Me and my agent talked about it and felt it was best for me to train somewhere else,” Jeffery said. “I just felt it was the best decision for me.”

Jeffery is coming off an injury-plagued 2015, when he appeared in only nine games because of a variety of soft-tissue ailments. When he was

Getting Abreu, Frazier in sync ideal

CHICAGO – Oh, to have third baseman Todd Frazier and first baseman Jose Abreu going good at the same time. Manager Robin Ventura would love nothing more, but it isn’t happening for the White Sox now, and come to think of it, the Sox’s power pair hasn’t really clicked together yet all year.

Just when Abreu is hitting like the middle of the order slugger the Sox need him to be, Frazier finds himself in an 8-for-62 slump that dropped his average to .206 and prompted Ventura to keep him out of the starting lineup Tuesday.

“I think a break is needed, to sit back a little bit and pick your teammates up and cheer them on,’’ said Frazier, a day after he reacted to one of his strikeouts

AP Source: NHL settles on Las Vegas for expansion

The NHL is ready to roll the dice on Las Vegas.

A person with direct knowledge of the NHL’s decision said the league has settled on Las Vegas as the home for its next expansion franchise, provided organizers can come up with a $500 million fee.

The person spoke Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because details of the plans have not been released by the league ahead of its Board of Governors meeting June 22 in Las Vegas. Quebec City also was strongly considered for expansion.

A second person who had been briefed on the decision said Las Vegas was a “done deal” after the recommendation of the NHL’s executive committee.

The Vegas franchise is expected to begin

play in the 2017-18 season.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Maria Sharapova appealed her two-year doping ban to the highest court in sports Tuesday, and an expedited ruling will be issued next month ahead of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Sharapova filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport seeking to overturn or reduce the suspension imposed by the International Tennis Federation last week.

The Russian tested positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January, taking it before each match at that tournament even though the substance was banned at the start of 2016.

Childhood treat gets remade with sweeter, lighter batter for adults

When I was growing up, my father would take us to get fresh hot doughnuts from Krispy Kreme every Sunday. The cake doughnuts, covered in peanuts or dipped in sprinkles, were always my favorite. And to this day, I crave cake doughnuts.

Fast forward 20 years to the time when both my sister and I lived in the same New York neighborhood. There was a fantastic bakery nearby where the counters were piled high with zucchini bread, apple walnut muffins, whoopie pies.

As a cook myself, I loved the setup as much as the pastries. It was an open commissary kitchen with a walk-up counter for ordering. As you waited in line, you could watch the bakers make all manner of homespun baked goods. Among the array of deliciousness displayed on the counter was what looked like a mini muffin coated in cinnamon and sugar. The texture of the crumb inside was less dense and more cake than muffin, and it had a cinnamon flavor and a pop of nutmeg.

It was called a “puff,” or at least that is what my sister and I called it.

A puff with a double-shot cappuccino was morning heaven.

My sister moved out of the neighborhood years before I too relocated.

Because the bakery is no longer close, I decided I should try to re-create those puffs. A Google search brought up dozens of images for what resembled the mini bites of heaven, but it was amazing how the actual recipes varied greatly and how few delivered.

Finally, I hit upon a recipe with more sugar and more milk making a thinner, more cake-like batter. I increased the cinnamon and nutmeg and added a pinch of lemony cardamom to round out the warm spices – and frankly, just because I love cardamom.

The advantage of the sweeter, lighter cakes is they will last up to three days in an airtight container. In fact, I think they are better the next day, making them ideal for a Father’s Day breakfast.

Make them Saturday and serve them Sunday.

These are so good I often make them for dessert and serve them with a dark chocolate dipping sauce.

Master Gardeners instruct day camp students

Cornerstone Christian Academy summer day camp students are digging into their summer garden with instruction from University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener interns.

Cornerstone summer day camp has a special time of gardening each Thursday where Master Gardener interns Nanette Phillips and Christy Krupa teach the children about seed germination, how to keep plants healthy and growing, and how insects, critters and animals affect a garden.

“It’s good for the children to learn these things; if we didn’t know how to grow healthy plants we wouldn’t have healthy things to eat,” Phillips said in a news release.

Krupa attended Cornerstone from kindergarten through eighth grade,

and says that now as an adult, it’s great to be giving back to the school through her work with the summer day camp students on their garden.

The mission of the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program is “Helping Others Learn to Grow.” Master Gardeners involve people in improving the quality of life by helping them find sound management practices for home and urban natural resources, creating aesthetically pleasing environments, promoting well-being through people-plant interactions and horticultural therapy, and by contributing to a safe, abundant food supply through home fruit and vegetable production.

Cornerstone Christian Academy is a private Christian school serving preschool through 12th-grade students and families throughout DeKalb County and the surrounding areas. Cornerstone’s Summer Day Camp serves children ages 3 to 10 in the community. This year’s theme is “Growing God’s Garden.”

Scientists try new type of vaccine Dear Readers: Yesterday I talked about a new kind of immunization: passive immunization with neutralizing antibodies. This approach may be effective against many different strains of a virus. It also may allow large amounts of a vaccine to be stored, ready to nip an exploding epidemic in the bud.

Traditional vaccines against HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) and influenza (flu) virus face a tough problem: The virus keeps changing many (but not all) of its antigens.

That makes it hard for a vaccine to keep up.

With the Ebola virus, there are several strains. They are different enough scientists have doubted a vaccine could be made that was effective against all of them.

Several years ago, scientists made an important discovery. During infection with flu virus, HIV and Ebola, the immune system makes antibodies to antigens that do not change. In large amounts, these antibodies will kill (neutralize) all strains of the virus.

For that reason, they are called “broadly neutralizing” antibodies.

Unfortunately, the body makes these natural broadly neutralizing antibodies in small amounts – too small to neutralize the large number of viruses (and their antigens) that are in a person’s body. So scientists have begun making large amounts of these antibodies in the laboratory. Then they test to see if the antibodies are effective when injected into animals infected with these viruses.

This is called “passive” immunization.

The traditional approach to immunization is “active.” A person (or animal) is given an antigen in hopes of stimulating the immune system to make antibodies against the antigen. With passive immunization, you give the antibodies themselves.

About five years ago, scientists tested broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV in mice. HIV doesn’t infect normal mice,

The broadly neutralizing antibodies reduced the amount of virus in the animals to a much greater degree than did traditional vaccines.

The antibodies also greatly lowered levels of the virus in monkeys, which are more like humans than mice. In 2015, the antibodies were given to humans infected with HIV – and levels of the virus plummeted.

Similarly encouraging results have occurred with broadly neutralizing antibodies against flu virus, in studies in animals.

Even the strain of flu virus that caused the terrible pandemic of 1918 was neutralized. In early 2016, the same approach was shown to protect mice and guinea pigs against all the strains of the Ebola virus.

Recently, scientists have tried a whole new type of vaccine. It’s not a shot of a virus’s antigens (an “active” vaccine). And it’s not a shot of broadly neutralizing antibodies (a “passive” vaccine). Instead, it’s a shot of the genes that make the broadly neutralizing antibodies. Those genes cause the animal to make large amounts of the antibodies. The technique has protected mice with human immune systems from HIV infection.

While more research is needed, new twists to vaccines might make major advances against many serious infectious diseases.

Some people believe sex with friends can turn a friendship into chaos. I don’t believe it because I can remain a friend and still be there intimately. We have learned that it is usually correct for a defender to cover the only honor when it is led from the dummy -- and that applies to this deal. To have a chance to defeat two hearts, East must take the heart 10 with his ace. Yes, South can still get home if he guesses to endplay West, but he probably will not. (The curious may work it out.) However, if declarer is allowed to run the heart 10 to West’s queen, the contract will be safe. South will win a club lead in the dummy and play another trump, when East’s ace catches only low cards. Declarer’s remaining hearts will all be winners.
