When there’s outrage, there’s hope POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS The finger-pointing and politicking that tend to follow a tragedy such as the repugnant mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, can be frustrating.

In part, we’ve become so accustomed to these types of tragedies that the responses are predictable: Some people will talk about gun control. Others say we should have more guns.

Still others will point to immigration policy and raise the specter of “radical Islam” and its desire to destroy our society and its values.

That includes our society’s inclusiveness of gay, lesbian and transgender people, who were targeted.

Of course, all of this also is playing out against the backdrop of a presidential election, so the Hillary-haters and Trump-bashers are putting their spin on it, too.

Then there’s the middle-road response, the Buddhist sort of third path that urges us to look inside ourselves and be the change that we want.

Maybe one day our government will do something. Or maybe it will do several things – so people of the left and the right can claim victory – and see if they help.

For now, at least we’re still reacting. At least some people are pointing out what they think is allowing this phenomenon of mass slaughter to be repeated again and again, either by people who become inspired by ISIS or twisted by hate and mental illness, and the weapons they are allowed to carry.

As long as we’re still reacting, there’s still a chance for something to be done, that this problem can be – it not solved – at least alleviated in

SAN FRANCISCO– Apple is working to make its iPhone and other gadgets smarter, responding to competitors’ recent moves by building more artificial intelligence into its Siri digital assistant, photos, maps and other online services.

The tech giant kicked off its annual software conference by announcing new software features for the Apple Watch and Apple TV, as well,

The sad day will be when this happens and we don’t blame anyone or anything – when we just collectively shrug and say, well, that’s how it is.

Kind of like we do with the violence in Chicago.

On Monday, the Chicago Tribune reported that “Forty-four people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, seven of them fatally, bringing the total number of gun violence victims in the city this year to more than 1,650.”

One of the people shot was a 5-year-old girl who was wounded in the foot while playing at a graduation party.

It’s only right to be appalled at the slaughter of the innocent in Orlando. People should continue to push for something to be done. People should stand in solidarity with the LGBT community targeted by this despicable man, who didn’t act in the name of any true religion.

I also hope we do not forget the violence that continues to rage here in Illinois, seemingly on every summer weekend. It’s a tragedy, too.

Young Eagles event in DeKalb gives kids chance to fly

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Amid a national shortage of pilots, local aviators are working to introduce younger generations to not only the joys of flight, but also potential careers.

Melissa Stone, 16, never had been in an airplane. So the DeKalb High School junior was nervous before taking her first flight Sunday at the Experimental Aviation Association ’s Young Eagles event.

Stone was one of more than 100 youths who took a free 20-minute flight around the DeKalb and Sycamore areas.

“I don’t like heights, but I wanted to come for the experience,” she said. “It was fun, it looked cool, and the scenery was beautiful. I did feel more relaxed once I was up there. ” The EAA holds two Young Eagles events a year, when the group offers flights to children in hopes of sparking a love of flying.

The Young Eagles program started in 1992 to introduce aviation to children ages of 8 to 17. Professional pilots volunteer their time to fly the children in two- to four-seat planes.

Steve Klopfenstein, chairman of the local Young Eagles program and a pilot of 19 years, said he hopes kids get interested in aviation and understand that flying is something anyone can do, even if they only want to be a recreational pilot.

“This type of event keeps aviation going; and if they’re excited, they can pursue their passion, ” he said.

“Lots of kids might not think it is something they can do or not know about it. So kids get the opportunity to experience a small aircraft.”

Usually, the DeKalb event draws about 60 kids; but this year’s turnout was much bigger.

Tom Burgan, a commercial pilot and treasurer of DeKalb’s EAA chapter, was pleased.

He said there is a nationwide shortage of commercial pilots, and all pilots got their start on smaller planes such as those at Sunday’s event.

“This plants the seed for kids who want to learn how to fly, ” he said. “It starts with a kid walking to a fence and watching the planes,

Bailey Plapp, 16, was on the same flight as Stone. But while Stone was apprehensive, Plapp couldn’t wait to get into the air and actually take control of the plane during the flight.

“I loved being able to steer the plane. The pilot guided me through it, ” said the DeKalb High School junior. “It was fun and exciting, and it’s something I’d be interested in pursuing someday.”

Retired commercial pilot Wes Lundsberg of Sycamore was the pilot of the girls’ flight. He said Plapp did a great job flying the plane.

“I let them fly so they can learn how to steer, and Bailey did a nice

job and made some nice turns, ” he said. “I love flying. I love seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces, and to hear them tell me how excited they are. I’d like to see more kids get involved in aviation, and this is a good opportunity for them to see what it’s like.”

Jill Aspinwall of DeKalb brought her 9-year-old daughter, Aja, so she could enjoy the exciting experience.

They waited for more than an hour, but Aja was confident the flight would be worth it.

“This seems like a really good opportunity,” the Founders Elementary fourth-grader said. “I’ve been on a big airplane, and I was scared then, but I’m not today. ” Kylie Nunez, 15, said Sunday’s

event was something one gets to experience only once. It was her first time on an airplane, but she wasn’t scared about the flight.

“It was exciting to see things you don’t always see; and when we were in the air, we could see the Chicago skyline,” she said.

Her sister, Cassie, 12, also took her first plane ride Sunday. She said her flight was pretty cool.

“I liked seeing over the whole town,” she said. “This is definitely something I’d be interesting in doing. I want to go up again because it was really fun.”

The EAA will hold another Young Eagles event Aug. 13 at the DeKalb airport. The event is free and open to children ages 8 to 17.

County groups open doors in aid of those affected by Orlando shooting

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Local resources have opened their doors to those who are grieving or otherwise affected by Sunday’s attack at a Florida dance club, where a gunman killed 49 people and injured 53.

In the wake of what has been called the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, First United Methodist Church in DeKalb and the Northern Illinois University Gender and Sexuality Resource Center have arranged for their services to be available throughout the week. Doors to the church’s chapel will remain unlocked, and those grieving or in need of a safe place to be alone are invited to light candles, pray, meditate or talk with a church representative. The NIU Gender and Sexuality Resource Center also will be open this week for “creative space time,” where people can express their support, frustration or emotional pain through art and writing.

“We have an [LGBT] community, like the community that was attacked in Orlando, here in DeKalb,” Pastor Paul Judd said. “I know from having conversations with members of that community, they very seldom feel fully safe.”

Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old American citizen from Port St. Lucie, Florida, opened fire early Sunday inside the crowded gay nightclub, Pulse, killing at least 49 people before dying in a gunfight with SWAT officers.

President Barack Obama called the shooting an “act of terror” and an “act of hate” targeting a place of “solidarity and empowerment” for gays and lesbians. He urged Americans to decide whether this is the kind of “country we want to be.”

First United Methodist Church is part of the Reconciling Ministries Network, a group of religious bodies in favor of support and inclusion of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Anyone seeking comfort after the Orlando shooting is welcome to visit the chapel, no questions asked, Judd said.

“I know from reaching out that people from all around this community, and people from the larger Northern Illinois community, even across the nation, have responded in a very positive, overwhelming manner to it,” he said. “If it touches and helps one person, it was a success.

If it starts to put cracks in the walls and barriers that we have, where people are supporting violence of any type, then it is an overwhelming success that we can tear down those walls.”

The gunman’s father recalled that his son recently became angry when he saw two men kissing in Miami, and the father said that might be related to the attack.

In addition to those killed, at least 53 people were hospitalized, most in critical condition, officials said. A surgeon at Orlando Regional Medical Center said the death toll likely would climb.

“We have so many people trying to place blame or just find a reason. ‘There has to be a reason.’ Violence, sin, evil does not have a reason. It’s in that chaos that it flourishes,” Judd said. “We just want to be here to listen, to talk, to hold each other and cry if that’s all we need and to offer a place for people to come.”

First United Methodist Church, at 321 Oak St. in DeKalb, will keep its chapel doors open day and night. The NIU Gender and Sexuality Resources Center will supervise creative space time from noon to 2 p.m. at 105 Normal Road in DeKalb.

Directors at the NIU Gender and Sexuality Resource Center were not immediately available to comment, but posted a statement on their Facebook page Monday morning.

“Our hearts are with the victims and survivors of the Orlando tragedy. While words are not enough to ease the pain, hurt, and anger that result, we will try.

Because we must,” they wrote. “Today and each day, the GSRC supports those most marginalized ... those whose identities place them at the intersections of inequity.”

DeKalb man found guilty of sexual abuse, mob action

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man convicted of mob action and criminal sexual abuse must undergo a sex offender evaluation before Sept.

22, when he will appear in court on separate criminal sexual abuse charges.

Gabriel R. Curl, 19, was released Thursday from the DeKalb County Jail without a confirmed street address.

After pleading guilty to criminal sex- Gabriel R. ual abuse and mob Curl action, Curl was sentenced to a total of 30 months’ probation and 119 days in the county jail, for which he was granted time served and was released, court records show.

Authorities said Gabriel Curl, 19, was living in a vacant DeKalb home Feb. 8, when he invited a man inside and proceeded to beat and burn him for money and cigarettes, court records show.

At least four others have been charged in connection with the incident.

Police also said Curl on Feb. 7 pushed an underage girl onto a bed, and detained and sexually abused another underage girl.

Conditions of Curl’s probation bar him from contacting either of the juvenile girls and the victim of

the mob action, and must provide the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office with an updated address, court records show.

Curl also is ordered to have no contact with anyone charged in connection with the Feb. 8 incident and must comply with any subpoenas to testify in their cases.

The mother of one of the victims said Curl’s sentence didn’t seem appropriate or severe enough.

“I don’t find it fair that my daughter has to live in fear of him as a 16-year-old. No 16-year-old should have to deal with that,” she said.

The Daily Chronicle is not identifying the mother in order to protect the identity of the juvenile daughter, who is a crime victim.

Neither DeKalb County First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein nor Curl’s attorney, Riley Oncken, were immediately available for comment.

A woman who identified herself as Curl’s mother hung up on a Daily Chronicle reporter Monday afternoon.

After his sentencing Thursday, Curl was released on a $20,000 recognizance bond on separate charges stemming from accusations that he used the internet to lure and groom a child into a sexual act.

He remains charged with grooming, indecent solicitation of a child and criminal sexual abuse.

He could face from one to three years in prison if convicted of either charge.

Edwin Russell Barnes died Sunday, June 12, 2016, in DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center.

He was born Aug. 6, 1928, son of Russell and Edith (Fogle) Barnes, in Esmond, IL. He graduated from Rochelle Township High School and Iowa State University, where he received a B.S. in agronomy. He married Marilyn Fay Cook on Nov. 11, 1951, in Waterloo, Iowa.

Edwin was a lifelong farmer and was a member of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau and the DeKalb County Beef Producers. He was on the board of directors for Farmers’ Grain Company of Esmond, and was an active member of 4-H and later a 4-H leader.

He was a member of the Creston Masonic Lodge since 1953, where he served as master, and later served as secretary for 20 years. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite in Freeport, Kirkland Lions Club and a lifelong member of Esmond United Methodist Church.

Someone wrote this in his high school yearbook, “He’s a jolly good fellow as everyone knows, for he’s seen smiling wherever he goes.” This was the perfect saying for him. Everyone who met him mentioned his smile. Although Ed was a man of few words, he loved being social.

He made daily trips to the Esmond elevator for coffee and company. Ed’s life was farming and family.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; children, Peggy (Jim) Merchant of Phoenix, AZ, Gale (Curt) Hill of Frankfort, IL, Jim (Danette) Barnes of Leland, IL, and Nancy (Steve) Ragsdale of Machesney Park, IL; grandchildren, Beth (Zach) Petritsch of Hinckley, IL, Andy Barnes of Leland, IL,

DeKALB – Aldermen made a motion, withdrew it and laid out several points of clarity in discussing a spending plan to get DeKalb through the second half of the fiscal year, before finally voting Monday to move one proposal on for final consideration.

Kathy Haley, the city’s finance director, presented a $49.3 million budget to the City Council, which includes a deficit in the general fund of about $600,000. Staff also made four budget adoption recommendations, with one being to keep the proposed plan as is – including the deficit – and three others offering ways to reduce it.

“Operations [remain at] status quo,” said Haley, the designated budget officer. “We weren’t cutting

As a way to reduce spending by $400,000, city staff recommended that aldermen choose to increase ambulance billing by $35,000; cut costs of pursuing nuisance property claims by $30,000; decrease by $20,000 the cost to demolish Protanos; hold off making the $191,000 purchases of one ambulance and one police car; and spend down the $100,000 in a fleet and equipment fund. Those recommendations are part of the proposal up for final consideration.

Sixth Ward Alderman Dave Baker said he didn’t favor keeping a high balance in the city’s reserve account. He said that would signal to future City Council members to spend money.

Monday marked the first reading of the budget proposal. Aldermen will take up the issue again in two weeks.

Kingston woman claims DeKalb police shielded restaurateur from charges

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A Kingston woman who claims she was attacked in April by an owner of Ellwood Steak and Fish House has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city, the police chief, the restaurant and its owners.

Kristina Brockman, 38, claims in the lawsuit that Vasilios Hristakos, an owner of the DeKalb eatery, broke her wrist and fractured her thumb in an unprovoked attack April 12 in the bar area of the restaurant at 2219 Sycamore Road.

The suit also claims that DeKalb police officers tried to dissuade her from filing a police report and that officers conspired to shield Hristakos from arrest and prosecution.

Loevy & Loevy, a Chicago-based firm that handles civil-rights and police misconduct cases, filed the suit Friday in Rockford. It names the city, DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery,

and three DeKalb police officers. The restaurant – along with owners Hristakos and Peter Kanavos – also are named as defendants in the suit. It seeks compensation for Brockman’s medical expenses as well as punitive damages and legal costs.

“Because of Defendant Hristakos’ personal relations with DeKalb’s Chief of Police Eugene Lowery, Hristakos was not arrested or charged, and [has Gene Lowery not] yet faced any conDeKalb police sequences for brutally battering [Brockman],” chief the lawsuit claims.

Hristakos said Monday he categorically denied the allegations, but declined further comment on the case, citing the involvement of an insurance company and its lawyers.

“I wish I could say the truth,” he said, “but I will have to wait for my day in court.”

Attorney Jon Loevy said the case was a “clear case of special treatment.”

“Everything about this has been unusual,” he said. “Ms. Brockman is disturbed because no one should be above the law. All she’s asking is that the law be enforced equally.”

Brockman’s lawsuit claims that Lowery frequently dines for free at Ellwood Steak and Fish House and has some sort of relationship with Hristakos that caused the incident to be treated differently from other cases.

“That’s why it wasn’t treated as any other attack would have been treated,” Loevy said.

Cindy Tsai, another attorney with Loevy & Loevy, said Brockman wasn’t able to determine whether any information from the police department ever had been sent on to the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The lawsuit claims that DeKalb police officers initially recommended

that Brockman not give a statement to police. She persisted, but later was told by police that she would be arrested if she continued to push for charges against Hristakos, the lawsuit said.

City Attorney Dean Frieders declined to comment directly on allegations in the lawsuit, citing an open criminal investigation.

However, he said, the incident was investigated by police and the findings were shared with county prosecutors.

Speaking generally, Frieders said, the time it takes for police to investigate any single crime and the time it takes for the state’s attorney’s office to bring charges “typically relate to the complexity of the case and the consistency of witness statements.”

He said Lowery has “exceptional integrity and honesty.”

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack declined to comment on the case.

CHICAGO – A measure that would let Illinois voters decide whether an independent commission should draw political boundaries inched closer to the November ballot Monday with a state board’s approval, though a pending lawsuit could derail the efforts.

The State Board of Elections unanimously endorsed its lawyer’s findings: Random sampling showed the group, Independent Map Amendment, had enough valid signatures for the ballot.

“This is a huge hurdle that we’ve cleared,” Independent Map spokesman Dave Mellet said.

What remains is the outcome of a Cook County lawsuit questioning whether the measure is constitutional, along with a final certification by election officials.

The Independent Map group wants an 11-member

commission – with a partisan mix – to determine congressional and legislative political districts, a process that takes place each decade based on census figures. Two years ago, a judge ruled a similar remap effort wasn’t constitutional and couldn’t be on the ballot. The 2014 petition drive was also hampered by signature and paperwork problems election officials called “a mess.”

There was no evidence of that Monday, with election authorities saying a 5 percent random sample of the over 560,000 collected signatures showed sufficient valid signatures and no challenges had been filed. Independent Map collected nearly double the 290,216 signatures required.

Backers of the proposed initiative say they learned from the previous effort and revamped their proposal. Their push has also been better funded and publicized by a coalition of business and civic leaders.

The lawsuit was brought by attorneys including Michael Kasper, who also argued against the 2014

proposal and has represented Illinois’ top Democrats, including House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton. The new lawsuit argues the proposed initiative doesn’t meet constitutional requirements and imposes new duties on the auditor general, among other things. Oral arguments are scheduled for June 30.

Election officials said Monday that they would wait for the lawsuit’s outcome before they certified the constitutional amendment for November’s ballot.

By law, they face an Aug. 26 deadline to do so.

CHICAGO – A bill is awaiting action from Gov. Bruce Rauner that would give Illinois police training and authorization to carry epinephrine auto-injectors to help with severe allergic reactions.

The measure is named after Annie LeGere, a 13-year-old Elmhurst girl who died after having a severe allergic reaction at a sleepover, The Chicago Tribune reported.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies in children have grown 50 percent from 1997 to 2011.

Annie’s mother, Shelly LeGere, said she has made it her mission to equip first responders with the injectors such as the EpiPen. School nurses and other school employees are legally allowed to use the injectors.

“Had the officer who was first on the scene (for Annie) had an EpiPen, our life would be different right now,” LeGere said. “But that’s no one’s fault because it was against the law for them.”

LeGere said she wants to allocate money raised by her nonprofit organization to police departments to buy auto-injectors after police officers are trained.

NEW YORK – McDonald’s is moving back to Chicago and taking over the old home of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

The world’s biggest hamburger chain said Monday that it signed a lease to move its corporate headquarters in 2018 from the leafy suburbs of Oak Brook to downtown Chicago. The move makes it the latest big company to trade suburbia for city offices in an attempt to attract young workers who prefer living in urban areas.

The company’s new home will be on the site that once housed Harpo Studios, where filming of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” took place until 2011. Harpo Stu-

ORLANDO, Fla. – The gunman whose attack on a gay nightclub left 49 victims dead appears to have been a “homegrown extremist” who espoused support for a jumble of often-conflicting Islamic radical groups, the White House and the FBI said Monday.

As Orlando mourned its dead with flowers, candles and vigils, counterterrorism investigators dug into the background of 29-year-old Omar Mateen, the American-born Muslim who carried out the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

“So far, we see no indication that this was a plot directed from outside the United States, and we see no indication that he was part of any kind of network,” FBI Director James Comey said. But he said Mateen was clearly “radicalized,” at least in part via the internet.

Comey said the bureau also is trying to determine whether Mateen had recently scouted Disney World as a potential target, as reported by People. com, which cited an unidentified federal law enforcement source.

“We’re still working through that,” Comey said.

The FBI chief defended the bureau’s handling of Mateen during two previous investigations into his apparent terrorist sympathies. As for whether there was anything the FBI should have done differently, “so far, the honest answer is, I don’t think so,” Comey said.

Despite Mateen’s pledge of fealty to the Islamic State, a murky combination of other possible motives and explanations emerged, with his ex-wife saying he suffered from mental illness and his Afghan-immigrant father suggesting he might have acted out of anti-gay hatred. He said his son got angry recently about seeing two men kiss.

At the White House, President Barack Obama said there is no clear evidence so far that Mateen was directed by the group, calling the attack an apparent example of “homegrown extremism.” Obama is traveling to Orlando on Thursday to pay his respects to the victims and stand in solidarity with the community, the White House said Monday evening.

Five of the wounded were reported in grave condition, meaning the death toll could rise. A call went out for blood donations.

In Orlando, mourners piled bouquets around a makeshift memorial, and people broke down in tears and held their hands to their faces while passing through the growing collection of flowers, candles and signs about a mile from the site of the massacre. Later Monday evening, thousands gathered near the site for a vigil held on the lawn of the Dr. Phillips Center, the area’s main performing arts venue. Many in the crowd said they were inspired to attend because Pulse played a huge role in their lives as gays and lesbians.

“It was a place that a young 20-year-old who wasn’t openly gay felt safe for the first time,” said Cathleen Daus, now 36.

People who were once looked at for potential terror ties can be removed from watch lists and generally resume their lives. And, Comey said, once an investigation is closed, “there is no notification of any sort” triggered by the person later trying to buy a firearm.

“Every case has to come to an end someplace, and if you don’t have evidence that somebody commits a crime, then you’re obligated to close that case,” said David Gomez, former counterterrorism chief of the FBI’s Seattle field office.

Are local authorities kept in the loop?

Comey said he was confident local law enforcement was made aware of the FBI’s findings and the fact that it was closing the investigation into Mateen.

Often, information is shared directly with local authorities through their representatives on joint terrorism task forces.

The FBI was criticized in 2013 after the Boston Marathon attack for not sharing enough information about the Tsarnaev brothers with local law enforcement. WASHINGTON – He didn’t come out of nowhere. The Orlando shooter came under suspicion three full years ago, after boasting of mutual acquaintances with the Boston Marathon bombers and making statements to co-workers that suggested he had radical, violent intentions. But after a 10-month investigation the FBI closed the case, finding no criminal charge to pursue.

Omar Mateen was scrutinized again in 2014 as part of a separate probe into a suicide bomber who attended the same Florida mosque and was a casual acquaintance. Again, agents found no significant radical ties and shifted their focus away.

Did investigators miss something they should have seen? A look at how law enforcement makes these life-anddeath judgments:

Mateen’s 2013 examination was a preliminary investigation, a type of inquiry that requires a supervisor’s approval and can go on for six months, with an extension if warranted. This one lasted 10 months before being closed. In a preliminary investigation, agents may track phone calls and obtain internet communications and bank records.

Investigators looking into Mateen’s statements to co-workers introduced confidential informants, followed him and recorded his conversations, among other methods.

Mateen admitted making the statements reported by his co-workers, but explained that he did it in anger because he thought they were discriminating against him and teasing him because he was Muslim, Comey said.

“The evidence developed during the investigation was consistent with his explanation that he had said these things to try to freak out his co-workers,” Comey said. Agents ultimately accepted that explanation.

More serious, longer-term terrorism investigations can employ invasive techniques, such as obtaining an order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to conduct electronic surveillance and physical searches.

SAN FRANCISCO – FedEx delivered packages containing illegal prescription drugs for internet pharmacies even after it noticed that authorities were cracking down on the businesses and was told one had shipped drugs to a woman who committed suicide, prosecutors said Monday as a trial began over drug-trafficking charges against the shipping giant.

FedEx knew that drugs in millions of packages it delivered over a decade were illegally prescribed but shipped them anyway because it did not want to lose millions of dollars in revenue to rival UPS, Assistant U.S. Attorney John Hemann said during his opening statement.

“They faced a choice, and the choice is to stop or go – and time and time again, they went,” Hemann said at the trial in San Francisco.

The government plans to rely on FedEx’s emails to make its case.

FedEx has denied the charges and said it only shipped what it believed were legal drugs from pharmacies licensed by states and registered with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

In her opening statement, FedEx attorney Cristina Arguedas said the company helped investigators crack down on the two pharmacies that prosecutors say were involved in the scheme and that it was never told by the DEA not to ship for a customer.

“If FedEx was picking up from a pharmacy that was shut down by the DEA and reopened, it had a registration issued by the DEA,” she said.

Arguedas contended that a DEA agent who emailed FedEx in 2006 about the suicide did not want the company to do anything about the pharmacy

that shipped the drugs, citing an ongoing investigation of the business.

The exchange was “emblematic” of the partnership between the DEA and FedEx, Arguedas said.

The trial – nearly two years in the making – is unusual because of the government’s decision to bring drug charges against a package delivery company and for the lack of a settlement.

UPS paid $40 million in 2013 to resolve similar allegations that arose from a years-long government crackdown on internet pharmacies that ship drugs to customers without valid prescriptions.

The stakes are high for Memphis, Tennessee-based FedEx. No FedEx officials are facing prison time, but the charges carry a potential fine of $1.6 billion.

In the early 2000s, prosecutors said, FedEx began conspiring with two internet pharmacy organizations to ship powerful sleep aids, sedatives, painkillers and other drugs to customers who had not been physically examined by a doctor.

The crux of the government’s case is that FedEx knew the drugs were illegal and headed for dealers and addicts, but delivered them anyway. Company drivers expressed safety concerns that FedEx trucks were being stopped on the road by online pharmacy customers demanding packages of pills, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

“It was like ‘The Walking Dead,’ your honor, in some places,” Hemann said, describing the customers.

FedEx is charged with distribution of controlled substances, conspiracy to launder money and other counts.

The trial could last into August before a ruling by Senior U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer, who will decide the case.

Orlando and the gun debate In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, the debate about gun control once again is heating up.

It’s a discussion – contentious or not – we should be having, even though any ideas, good or not, always seem to stall in Congress.

Congress debated this second question late last year in the wake of two mass shootings, one in California and one in Colorado. Ultimately, no such ban was passed.

Would Omar Mateen have been able to murder 49 innocent people and critically injure dozens more had Congress passed a ban on suspected terrorists from buying guns? He was on the watch list when the FBI questioned him in 2013 and 2014 about possible ties to terrorism. But he was removed after those investigations were closed.

Whether or not such a ban would have prevented the Orlando massacre, we support enacting one now. It only makes sense.

Banning the sale of assault weapons is the larger, and more difficult, issue. Gun advocates say the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits such a restriction, but for 10 years (from 1994 to 2004) a federal law banning the sale of assault weapons was in place.

The issue is such a political hot button now we realize passage of a similar ban is near impossible.

But it should be considered.

We acknowledge no legislation ever will be able to completely stop the Mateens of the world. A hatefilled individual hellbent on violence will commit a violent act. But can the damage be limited?

We as a country should take all possible steps to limit the carnage these terrorists are intent on inflicting on innocent victims.

Possible exit poll errors suggest more surprises Are the exit polls, on which just about every elections analyst has relied, wrong?

That’s a question raised by New York Times Upshot writer Nate Cohn – a question whose answers have serious implications for how you look at the 2016 general election.

Standard analysis is that Democrats have a built-in advantage because the electorate is increasingly nonwhite.

The exit polls say the white percentage of the electorate declined from 77 percent in 2004 to 74 percent in 2008 and 72 percent in 2012. In that year, they said, 13 percent of voters were black, 10 percent Hispanics, 3 percent Asian.

Since then, these groups have been voting heavily Democratic, by varying margins, and analysts have argued that it’s very hard for a Republican to win, especially one who has antagonized nonwhites, as Donald Trump has.

But exit polls may not be accurate, Cohn argues.

As he points out, they are designed not to accurately represent the proportions of each demographic group, but to indicate the actual result, within a statistical margin of error, and to show the differing responses of significant subgroups.

Moreover, as Cohn doesn’t mention, the results are massaged by the exit pollsters and media analysts, who are aware that some voters (the

So Cohn looks at two other sources of information on how people voted, the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey and the Democratic firm Catalist’s voter file compiled from public voting records.

Both sources, as do exit polls, have their weaknesses. Many nonvoters tell the Census Bureau they voted. Voter records are often erroneous or out of date. Even so, the two sources paint a significantly different and possibly more accurate picture of the electorate than the exit poll.

The CPS and Catalist report that the 2012 electorate was 74 percent and 76 percent white – higher than the exit poll’s 72 percent.

They said that only 15 percent of voters were younger than 30, not 19 percent as in the exit poll, and that 61 percent and 62 percent were 45 or older, not 54 percent as in the exit poll.

Most significantly, they peg the proportion of noncollege-graduate whites older than age 45 – Donald Trump’s core group – as 30 percent and 29 percent of voters, signifi-

Really, it’s both, and became a soggy issue for the third consecutive race weekend at the track over an eightmonth period.

The IndyCar Series race in Texas is in what essentially is a 21/2-month rain delay, with the resumption scheduled Aug. 27.

“I think we’re going through a rough patch,” TMS president Eddie Gossage said. “We’re just being dealt a tough hand by nature.”

After several hours unsuccessfully trying to dry the 11/2-mile track, the IndyCar race was postponed late Saturday without the cars ever getting on to pit road. The race then started late Sunday and didn’t get enough laps completed to make it official before more rain came.

Without diagrams to show, Gossage described how under three layers of asphalt there is porous concrete that acts as a drainage mat feeding a French drainage system all the way around the track. He said more drains have been added recently, and that existing ones were examined to make sure they still were fully functional.

High humidity also was an issue Saturday night when trying to dry the track, which still had noticeable damp spots more than six hours after it had stopped raining.

“Man, it’s frustrating to us,” Gossage said. “But what can you do? You cannot beat Mother Nature.”

When Gossage was asked whether there was anything the track could do with its drainage system, he started with, “Man, I’m just going to get myself in trouble,” before a nearly 4-minute answer that included a lecture-like description about the track’s surface that was last completely repaved 15 years ago.

“Racecar drivers like old asphalt, right? That’s what you always hear,” he said. “Well, old asphalt becomes old because it oxidizes, and because over time the fines and the smaller aggregate that makes up asphalt comes out. ... The result is you have a more porous asphalt.”

What that means is that there are more small spaces and holes for water to penetrate.

“An inch of rain, well, that upper level gets saturated,” Gossage said. “And [water] holds it in there.”

Gossage said “Air Titan” track dryers developed by NASCAR and used during those races have accelerated, making the surface more porous by blowing amounts of air into the track and also pulling up small bits of asphalt. Texas used tradition-

on the apron near where cars come off pit road to blend back on to the track.

Had they tried again Monday, there would have been more issues with the weather. There was heavy rain there early in the afternoon, about the same time as when the race likely would have been scheduled.

When IndyCar returns to Texas in August, the race will resume on lap 72 of 248 with James Hinchcliffe leading. The series has seven races scheduled before then, and only two more after that to finish this season.

“It’s a little unique, but we do a lot of unique things here,” said Jay Frye, IndyCar’s president of competition and operations.

Although it almost certainly will be hot in August, when the average temperature in that area is in the low 90s, there also is a pretty good chance the track will be dry – and without any significant changes.

“If [the track] were more sealed off on top, [water] wouldn’t get into it,” Gossage said. “So the question is, Do you want to repave and seal it off, or do you deal with it? The answer is, every racecar driver, without exception, tells you, ‘Don’t repave.’ ”

She finished the game with 27 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and two blocks in 38 minutes, but she went to another level in the second half. She scored 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting and nine rebounds in the final two quarters.

The game ended the way it should have – with Lehman sealing the 68-64 victory with a pair of free throws in the final seconds.

And later in the season, she tied a school record with 41 points at Western Michigan, and the guard ended the season averaging a double-double with 13.4 points and 11 rebounds.

Summer is boring.

There are no Northern Illinois games to cover, and so let’s do the next best thing: listing superlatives from the previous year.

Spanning all of the athletic programs, there were plenty of memorable moments, performances and highlight-reel plays. Here are the best of the best:

BEST HIGHLIGHT-REEL PLAY Kenny Golladay, football

BEST INDIVIDUAL SEASON Emily Naegele, softball

Watching from the pressbox at the Glass Bowl in Toledo, I couldn’t help but think it watching Golladay’s one-handed touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone.

“Wait, did he catch that?”

Things looked grim for the Huskies when quarterback Drew Hare blew out his Achilles in the second quarter, and NIU trailed undefeated Toledo.

Then the fourth quarter belonged to Golladay.

He had the one-handed touchdown catch with a Toledo defender right in his face, then added a 44-yard reception that set up the eventual game-winning touchdown run by Joel Bouagnon.

There are plenty of strong candidates to choose from – Shawun Lurry and his nine interceptions and volleyball player T’ara Austin winning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year – but, man, oh man, did Naegele slug the ball this season.

She broke the school record for home runs in a season and led the MAC in batting average (.404), slugging percentage (.894), on-base percentage (.533), home runs (20), RBIs (56), total bases (135) and was tied for first in walks (35). After she torched Kent State in the first two games of a series, the Golden Flashes decided to walk Naegele in all four of her plate appearances in the third game.

I can’t say I blame them, either.

BEST SEASON BY A FRESHMAN Alex Frenz, softball

BEST SEASON FOR A TEAM Volleyball

The Huskies opened MAC play with a record of 2-1.

Then they kept winning and winning, taking 12 of their final 13 regular-season matches. They became the only NIUI team this year to win the MAC crown in the regular season, and coach Ray Gooden was named the conference coach of the year.

They did so in pretty dominating fashion, too. The Huskies swept their opponents in the final seven matches of the regular season.

However, they fell to Ohio in the MAC tournament championship match, and then got some tough news when Austin transferred to University of South Florida.

BEST INDIVIDUAL MOMENT Shawn Scott, wrestling

Scott looked like he was headed to the consolation bracket in his second

match at the NCAA Championships.

He was trailing, 5-2, with 10 seconds remaining before stunning the crowd and No. 9 Reuben Franklin (Cal State-Bakersfield) with a takedown and a near fall as time expired for a dramatic 8-5 victory.

It turned out to be the highest seed defeated by an unseeded Huskies wrestler since 1993, when Jim Kossakowski took down No. 8 Brett Colombini (Minnesota).

Scott’s dramatics came inside Madison Square Garden in New York.

Talk about rising to the occasion on the big stage.

Catcher Emily Naegele BEST IN-PERSON PERFORMANCE Ally Lehman, women’s basketball

In the best performance in a game that I covered, Lehman just took over the game in the second half against Bradley.

There’s no other way to describe it.

I really wanted to say men’s basketball player Marshawn Wilson because I absolutely love the passion he plays with. Also, baseball pitcher William Anderson put together a strong season and was named the MAC Freshman of the Year.

However, it’s tough to top what Frenz did for the softball team this year.

She came out of nowhere to become the Huskies’ ace, going 6-4 with a 1.91 ERA in conference and 16-8 with a 2.27 ERA on the season.

Some of the Huskies’ biggest games of the season were played with Frenz in the circle, and rightfully so.

She was named the MAC Freshman of the Year and gives NIU reason for optimism in the years to come.

“It’s very important we get to play together,” senior guard Jake Hed said.

“The seniors didn’t get to play with the guys that will be juniors this year. So we’ve been able to get out there and get in our groove.”

Each tournament offers the quality competition Conroy wants the Knights to experience. If Kaneland can establish its team-wide responsibilities and

OAKLAND, Calif. – LeBron James had 41 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists, Kyrie Irving also scored 41 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers capitalized on the Warriors playing without suspended star Draymond Green, staving off NBA Finals elimination with a 11297 victory in Game 5 on Monday night.

James and Irving became the first teammates to score 40 points in an NBA Finals game as the Cavaliers pulled within 3-2 and sent their best-ofseven series back to Ohio.

“We’re just happy we got another day. That’s all we can ask for,” James said. “We got another day to survive.

We’re going to start preparing tonight, start preparing tomorrow and whenever Game 6 is we’ll be ready.”

Take that, haters. James had much more to say about these playoffs before

he’s done – and not with his mouth, even as the criticism came from all directions after his Game 4 tussle with Green and reaction to what he considered the Golden State forward’s inappropriate words.

He was booed again as the Cavs left the court for their locker room, but thousands of fans already had made for the exits minutes earlier.

The Cavs handed defending champion GoldLeBron James en State only its fourth defeat at sold-out Oracle Arena all season, denying MVP Stephen Curry and the Warriors a chance to celebrate a second straight title with their golden-clad “Strength In Numbers” supporters.

Now, Curry and Co. will try to win on the road just the way the Warriors did last year, and also in their only other championship season out West in 1975.

The Warriors will get Green back

Thursday as they try again for that repeat title.

Banned from the arena, Green watched from a baseball suite in the Oakland Coliseum next door, joined

by Golden State general manager Bob Myers.

The All-Star forward was suspended Sunday for his fourth flagrant point of the postseason.

He was assessed a retroactive Flagrant-1 for his Kyrie Irving swipe at James in the fourth quarter of Friday’s Game 4.

Tied 61-all at halftime Monday, the Warriors missed 14 of their first 20 shots out of intermission and shot 7 for 24 in the third as James and the Cavs grabbed command by doing all of the little things on both ends of the floor – the very intangibles Golden State desperately missed without Green’s high-energy presence on both ends.

James jumped in the passing lanes to create defensive havoc, flipped passes around and got open.

Klay Thompson scored 37 points with six 3-pointers, and Curry added 25 points with five 3s, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. But as the game wore on, the Splash Brothers shot airballs and clanked 3-point tries off the front rim. The Warriors often failed to get a hand in the face of Cleveland’s shooters.

Irving’s three-point play with 7:30 remaining put Cleveland ahead, 102-92, and the Cavs kept pushing. They answered on offense and made all the key stops on defense.

“I’m thankful, but at the same time we wouldn’t be in any position without both of us putting on a performance like this,” Irving said. “Our guys coming in and just trusting our leadership and doing it for four quarters – that’s what it’s about.”

Inspired by a challenge to compete harder, Dan Franck did something rarely seen in summer league boys basketball.

The Kaneland senior timed his defensive rotation from the weak side perfectly and took a charge. It was the second game of the Sycamore summer league against Rochelle, and Franck had answered Knights coach Joe Conroy’s challenge to compete harder.

“Coach loves it when we take charges,” Franck said. “Rochelle was bigger than us and were outrebounding us. The charge was a momentum-shifter for us. We went on a run after I took it.”

As the Knights enter Conroy’s second season as coach, they will do so with a full complement of summer practices and league games. Because the veteran coach was hired after summer league last year, it is his first opportunity to mold the team in the less competitive setting of offseason games.

There’s less reliance in summer on structure and coaches calling an offensive or defensive play every time down the court. A free-flowing system based on sight adjustments and reaction to an opponent’s action is Conroy’s prefered method of instruction, anyway.

“I’ve got a defensive mindset, but I don’t want them to need me to make

become a cohesive unit over the summer, when training camp tips off in the fall, the Knights will be ahead of the progress they made last season.

“It’s been a leadership-by-committee approach,” Conroy said. “But what’s gone on is no one has come in with the attitude that they scored 20 points, so it must be their team. These guys fit well and really enjoy playing together.”

Kaneland finished 20-9 last season, losing to Rockford Boylan in a Class 3A Woodstock North Sectional semifinal.

Without much frontcourt size, it will be important for Kaneland to jell on both offense and defense. At camp Monday, the Knights focused on drills on ball-handling and blocking out.

Limited second-chance opportunities for Kaneland opponents will allow the Knights to initiate their fast break and capitalize on their speed advantage.

“We’re small, so we’ve got to learn how to body up opponents,” senior guard Mason Conroy said. “We’ll have to go in and rebound against bigger guys. We are quick, though, and can really get up the court (on offense).

Our on-the-ball defense is one of our strengths, but we’ll still have to double down and dig down on the other team’s post players. We’ll throw our bodies around a bit, bother them and get a hand in their face.”

A few more summer league charges taken would please Joe Conroy, too.

Shields struggles again in 2nd start

CHICAGO – Just what did the White Sox get in James Shields?

For the second time in as many outings with the Sox, and for the third straight time he has pitched – including his final start with the San Diego Padres before he was traded for – Shields got hit all over the ballpark Monday night.

This time it was the Detroit Tigers, who greeted Shields with a leadoff homer from Ian Kinsler in a three-run first inning, tacked on three more in the second and added another in the third to open a 7-0 lead. Shields James Shields did produce two scoreless innings after that – his first as a Sox – but still.

Here was Shields’ latest awful line against the Tigers: Five innings, nine hits, seven runs (six earned), four walks, one strikeout. His throwing error, a contribution to a shaky body of defensive work overall by the Sox, accounted for the unearned run.

Here are his two-start totals for the Sox: Seven innings, 17 hits, 14 runs (13 earned), six walks, three strikeouts.

And his numbers over his last three outings: 92/3 innings, 25 hits, 24 runs, 10 walks, four strikeouts. And oh, six home runs.

Before that, Shields, an accomplished 34-year-old veteran and former All-Star, had pitched to 3.06 ERA in 10 starts for the Padres.

So what’s up? Why were frustrated Sox fans thinking goofy thoughts like, ‘Maybe John Danks wasn’t all that bad, after all?’

The Sox are in desperation mode to win, having lost 14 of 18 games and 22 of 30 and needing a win to climb back to .500. This one was big enough for manager Robin Ventura to re-introduce the “Big Game James” nickname into the discussion before the game. The Sox were swept by the Tigers in Detroit two weekends ago and had lost 11 of their past 12 games against American League Central teams, three of which have climbed over them since a 23-10

“He’s been here for a week and sees kind of what’s going on, and I think he realizes it’s a big game,’’ Ventura said.

“Hopefully he can live up to that moniker. But we just need him to go out and be James Shields. He doesn’t have to be Big Game James, he can just pitch and put us in a position to win.’’

Because the Sox’s struggling offense came to life against left-hander Matt Boyd and the Tigers bullpen, Shields poor outing, its “that’s-more-like-it” finish notwithstanding, became something of an afterthought.

Jose Abreu’s bat continued to stay hot as the weather has warmed up, his two-run homer putting the Sox on the board in the third and his RBI single bringing in one of three Sox runs in the fifth. Todd Frazier drove in a run with a sharp grounder to shortstop and Brett Lawrie drove in another in the fifth.

Dioner Navarro homered with nobody on base in the fourth.

In the sixth, Adam Eaton – batting second for the first time with rookie shortstop Tim Anderson leading off – scored Navarro (walk).

After falling behind 7-0, the Sox trailed 8-7 after six.

The U.S. Cellular Field crowd, which had booed Shields as it had in his Sox debut against the Washington Nationals, came back to life.

The Sox must show life to keep the heat off Ventura and stop the line of questioning that players are being asked to confront more and more.

“He’s his own manager. He’s done a heck of a job for us putting us in a position to win,’’ Eaton said before the game. “As players, we haven’t really came through here recently. And I think it all really boils down to player performance. It has nothing to do with him.

“It’s our job to go out and produce, and when we don’t, it looks bad on him.’’

Cubs drop 1st game in series that won’t see Lester, Arrieta

“I think he wanted some payback,” Montero said, referring to what he called the best-pitched game against the Cubs this season.

By the seventh inning, Maddon intentionally walked the bases full to push Baker to lift Scherzer for a pinch-hitter.

“Just try to get him out of there,” Maddon said. “You could have brought Sandy Koufax in at that point and it might have looked better.”

The Nationals’ seventh win in eight games made them the second team in the majors to reach 40 wins, joining the Cubs.

Of course, 40 wins in June doesn’t mean anything in October. And even if somebody wanted to use this series as a measuring stick for the Cubs,

they’re not starting their two best pitchers in the series (Jake Arrieta and Lester).

But even the World Series veteran Lester looks around at potential playoff opponents as the season reaches the summer months.

“Obviously, you look at the divisions and who’s leading and all that stuff. But right now we still have a long ways to go,” said Lester, the NL’s Player of the Week for last week.

“We get back from the break and go a couple weeks from there, and that’s when things get fun and I think you could start kind of narrowing it down.

I wouldn’t count out the Mets in this division. Especially with the pitching they have.”

Which, if anything, was the gauntlet Scherzer threw down as the top two teams in the league face four months of taking care of business before a potential rematch with much on the line.

“A lot of pitching – that’s what we ran into last year,” Maddon said. “We got through the Pirates game. St. Louis, we got through that. And then we ran into the Mets, and we didn’t put the ball in play enough. And that’s what we’ve really got to strive to do is just to at least move the ball and give ourselves a chance.”

Martinez open to Sox job, but not at Ventura’s expense

WASHINGTON – As local baseball columnists and booster-club broadcasters try to titillate the masses with suggestions of Ozzie Guillen or A.J. Pierzynski becoming the next manager of the White Sox, the best choice might already be in town, in uniform.

And Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez, who maintains contacts with the Sox since his playing days on the South Side, said he’s interested if they ever call. With one big caveat: “I’m a big Robin fan,” he said of embattled Sox manager Robin Ventura, who’s in the last year of his contract. “I played with Robin. He was a teammate, and one of the best teammates I’ve had.

So I’m pulling for him right now.

“If the job ever comes available, it’d be something, yeah, I’d definitely be interested in. But for right now, I hope they do well and we end up playing them in the World Series.”

Martinez, 51, has been considered among the next generation of big-league managers, and this road trip to Atlanta

and Washington offers yet another reminder of the process. He was a finalist for the Nationals’ job two hiring processes ago, and the Braves already have created the first opening this year when they fired Fredi Gonzalez last month.

Martinez, who in recent years also was a finalist for the Astros job and interviewed with the Cubs (after Dale Sveum was fired) and Rays, didn’t get a call from the Nats when they went through their Dave Martinez Bud Black-to-Dusty Baker hiring mess last winter. Despite coming off a high-profile 97-win season with the Cubs, he interviewed only with the Dodgers, who eventually hired Dave Roberts.

“I was really surprised last year he didn’t get more play,” said Cubs manager Joe Maddon, who has had Martinez by his side as a bench coach since 2008. “I really don’t understand why. Getting to work with him as long as I have, he’s really good at what he does. He definitely knows how to run a baseball game. And he’s had a lot of

the tough conversations for me in the clubhouse [with players], which a lot of people run away from, man.”

Maddon has offered strong endorsements of Martinez every time he’s been up for managing jobs and suggested he might step up lobbying efforts.

A big finish by the Cubs in October could help raise Martinez’s profile even more.

If the Sox’s job opens, Martinez already has the relationships.

“I played over there, and (Jerry) Reinsdorf was the owner,” he said. “I know all of them. I played with Kenny (Williams). So I know them.

“At this point, I’m the bench coach for the Chicago Cubs,” he added. “I come every day prepared for the game at hand. If you’re going to ask me, Do I want to manage or do I think I can manage? Absolutely. There’s no question.”

Note: With two more errors Monday – one costing a run – the Cubs have committed nine in their past three games, including two rare ones by Dexter Fowler. They hadn’t committed an error in June before that, with only nine in their previous 21 games.

WASHINGTON – If this series against the Nationals this week is the kind of playoff preview that a throng of media Monday suggested at every turn and nearly every question, then the good news for the Cubs might be that they’re keeping a secret weapon out of sight until October.

“Ha,” said Jon Lester, who won’t face the Nationals this season. “I hope we’re not doctoring my rotations or anything.”

Wouldn’t have mattered if they did.

Not if Max Scherzer is pitching like this should the Cubs see him again this year.

Scherzer took a perfect game one out into the sixth inning Monday on the way to a 4-1 victory over the Cubs in the opener of a three-game series against the teams with the top two records in the majors.

With four months to go before a

potential high-stakes rematch against Dusty Baker’s National League East leaders, it’s stupid to try to draw conclusions from this series – or the Cubs’ four-game sweep last month – related to the playoffs.

Except this: The kind of pitching the Cubs faced Monday night – and against the Dodgers two weeks ago and the Giants a week before that – is what they should expect in October.

“In order to win in the playoffs, you’ve Max Scherzer got to beat good pitching, and he’s one of them,” Cubs catcher Miguel Montero said of Scherzer (8-4). “That’s fine. We beat him one time. He beat us this time.

In the playoffs, you see good pitching; that’s why they got to the playoffs.”

It’s how the Mets sent the Cubs home in October last year before reaching the World Series.

The last time the Cubs saw Scherzer, they hit four home runs and scored seven against him in a victory last month at Wrigley Field.

In his next start, he became the third pitcher in history to strike out 20 in a game. And by Monday,

Welsh-Ryan Arena getting $110M overhaul

Project expected to be completed by the fall of 2018

It started with the 2013 hiring of Chris Collins, a promising Duke assistant with strong ties to the Chicago area. The program has upped its game in recruiting since and – slowly, but steadily – raised its play on the court.

Twenty victories and a middle-of-thepack finish in the Big Ten last season were nothing to sneeze at.

But now, Northwestern is getting next-level serious about reinventing itself as a serious player in college basketball.

The school on Monday announced plans for a $110 million overhaul of Welsh-Ryan Arena.

A reconfigured seating arrangement, modernized concourses, premium suites and revamped locker rooms Chris Collins all are on the menu.

The arena’s lighting and audio-and-visual capabilities also will be upgraded.

Considering Welsh-Ryan has – in virtually every way imaginable – lagged far behind most Big Ten facilities for many years, this is a most welcome development.

Athletic director Jim Phillips called it a “historic development for the future of Northwestern athletics.”

“The new Welsh-Ryan Arena will be a dramatic transformation for our varsity sports programs that call it home and for the fans who devotedly support our student-athletes,” Phillips said in a statement. “A central tenet of our commitment to providing a worldclass experience for our Wildcats is a passionate home crowd. This complete overhaul of our most-used and versatile venue will create a state-of-the-art experience accessible to all Chicagoland sports fans.”

According to the school, donations will fund the project on the 63-year-old arena, which has been home to Northwestern’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams.

According to the school, the athletic department is “in the process of arranging alternate locations” for games and practices after the conclusion of the 2016-17 basketball season.

Bears mourn death of former D-lineman

A newish scheme. Loggains’ offense is different than that of former offensive cooardinator Adam Gase, although the terminology remains.

“The shell of the offense will stay the same,” Loggains said. “It’s been the same since Fox has been a head coach. The language and everything will be the same, but it will evolve like it would have if Adam would have been here.”

Still, he said he’s “not concerned” about Jeffery picking it up.

“I know Alshon is working hard right now,” Loggains said. “And we’re excited to get him back when he shows up.”

A new coach. Jeffery and new receivers coach Curtis Johnson have developed a relationship even though he hasn’t been inside Halas Hall. Johnson flew to California to visit Jeffery shortly after being hired to replace

Mike Groh, and has spoken with him on the phone about once a week.

“Just to get to know him a little bit,” Johnson said last month. “He didn’t know who I was, and I didn’t know who he was.

“One thing about him: he’s a very, very bright young man, he’s smart, he’s confident. I really fell in love with him. I really liked him. I like his personality. I like his goals. He wants to win here.”

A health update. Pace said in April that Jeffery stressed how hard he was training in Florida, working on his biomechanics after missing nine games with soft tissue injuries.

“Talking to him and his agents, they understand the importance – as we do – of him having a healthy season,” Pace said. “I know that’s in the front of his mind.”

Tuesday, he can show his bosses.

Bryan Robinson, the defensive lineman best known for blocking a field goal to win the Bears’ first game after Walter Payton’s death, died Saturday night inside a Milwaukee motel room. He was 41.

An autopsy was conducted Monday morning and no trauma was found. The cause of death for Robinson – who played for the Bears from 1998 to 2003 – is pending further toxicology reports, according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner.

“We are saddened Bryan to hear of the loss of Robinson Bryan Robinson,” the Bears said in a statement. “He will be remembered for the determination and work ethic he displayed on the field over his six years in Chicago.

“The Bears and our fans will always be indebted to him for his game-saving blocked field goal in Green Bay six days after Walter Payton’s passing. Our prayers are with Bryan and his family.”

Robinson, who was married and lived in Gurnee, checked into the Midpoint Motel with another male at 9 a.m. He rented the room for six hours and was considered by the motel manager to be a “regular” there, according to the medical examiner’s investigation report.

Staff members checked on Robinson on Saturday night when he didn’t check out of his room on time; by then, the other male had left. Robinson was found unresponsive, facedown on the bed wearing only a T-shirt.

Officers recovered a bottle of Crown Royal whisky, marijuana, lubricant and “poppers,” inhalants used to relax muscles that are common in the club scene. A crushed, wet toilet paper tube was found in the crook of his left arm.

An undrafted free agent from Fresno State, Robinson signed with the Rams in 1997 before joining the Bears one year later. He started 82 games in six seasons, including all 16 from 19992001 and 2003. He finished his Bears career with 16½ sacks, five forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Having checked into Halas Hall on Monday, receiver Alshon Jeffery will attend the Bears’ three-day mandatory minicamp starting Tuesday.

The reason is in the name: because Jeffery signed a one-year, $14.59 million franchise tag tender in March, he’s subject to fines if he misses mandatory events.

Jeffery stayed away from Halas Hall after signing the tender, hoping to negotiate a long-term extension. He and the Bears have until July 15 to do so; otherwise he will play the season under the one-year deal.

Here are five things the receiver missed: A mellow response. Everyone inside Halas Hall would have preferred Jeffery’s participation in the offseason program, but they seemed less annoyed than they were last season, when tight end Martellus Bennett missed the same amount of time in a failed attempt to renegotiate his contract.

Jeffery stayed in contact with his coaches and the front office, even spending time with coach John Fox after bumping into him May 28 at Wrigley Field.

He returned to Chicago during the draft weekend, too, signing autographs at “Draft Town” and telling fans his plan was to “let (general manager Ryan) Pace and my agent” talk about his contract.

A hopeful boast. Last month, new offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains couldn’t help but dream when asked about the combination of Jeffery and receiver Kevin White, who returned to the field during the offseason program after recovering from shin surgery.

“I can’t wait to get them both on the field at the same time,” Loggains said.

“Something we’ve never seen in Chicago.”

That would take a stellar season.

In 2013, Jeffery and Brandon Marshall posted 1,421 and 1,295 receiving yards, respectively, and became the only Bears receiving pair to be selected to the Pro Bowl in the same season.

“I think that both of those guys get healthy and they’re working their tails off to get out there together,” Loggains said.

White, a 2015 first-rounder, said increased reps during organized team activities were beneficial.

“I’m kinda worried about what I have to do, try to get on the same page with Jay,” he said. “And when Al gets back is when Al gets back.”

This can lead to pandemics – when new flu viruses develop and suddenly sweep across the globe. For example, the pandemic of the H1N1 “swine” flu virus in 2009-10 swept over the entire world within a few months. That’s too fast for a conventional vaccine to be made in large quantities. I know from personal experience: I caught the H1N1 virus and became quite sick before a vaccine against it could be developed.

With Ebola, there’s a slightly different problem. There are several very different strains of the Ebola virus. Every now and then, for reasons we don’t understand, one of the strains of the virus starts an epidemic. Each of them is different enough from the others it hasn’t seemed possible to make a traditional vaccine that would cover all three.

So, scientists have long dreamed of a vaccine that: (1) would be effective against many different strains of a virus; and (2) could be made in large amounts and stored to be ready for when an epidemic suddenly explodes on the scene, hopefully nipping the epidemic in the bud. Passive immunization with neutralizing antibodies may prove to fulfill that dream, as I’ll describe tomorrow.

Dear Dr. K: I heard on TV about a possible new vaccine against HIV, Ebola and other terrible viruses. That sounds like very good news, or is it just hype?

Dear Reader: You might have heard about a new approach to creating vaccines. The approach is called “passive immunization with neutralizing antibodies.” It could revolutionize immunization against Ebola and other viruses, including HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) and influenza (flu) viruses.

To tell you what it is and why this new approach is exciting, I need to explain some basics first. In tomorrow’s column, I’ll explain neutralizing antibodies.

When we are infected by viruses (and other microbes), certain cells of our immune system catch a few of the viruses. These cells chop the microbes they’ve caught into little pieces. Then those cells display the pieces, called antigens, like little flags waving from their cell surface.

Some other types of immune system cells see those antigens and begin making antibodies against them. The antibodies attach to those antigens – and to any virus that contains those flags. When that happens, the antibodies disable the virus.

Traditional vaccines contain large amounts of antigens of a virus. When those antigens enter your body, the immune system dedicates certain immune cells to make antibodies against those antigens.

The antibodies are made whenever a virus with those antigens infects your body, because those immune cells have a “memory” of the antigens that recognizes them immediately.

So far, so good. But here’s the problem.

Some viruses frequently change the shape of certain antigens. The flu virus is a prime example. Often new strains of the flu virus, with new and different antigens, suddenly

As we learned yesterday, you cover the last of touching honors. (As there is only one honor, that makes it the last.) South wins the king with his ace, but West gets two trump tricks with his queen-nine over declarer’s jack-eight.
