‘Hamilton’ wins 11 Tonys but fails to break record

NEW YORK – “Hamilton,” the hip-hop stage biography of Alexander Hamilton, won the 2016 Tony Award for best new musical, capping an emotional night in which many in the Broadway community rallied to embrace the LGBT community after a shooting at a gay Florida nightclub.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical biography about the first U.S. treasury secretary won 11 Tonys, just short of breaking the 12Tony record held by “The Producers.”

Jeffrey Seller, producer of “Hamilton,” quoted the show’s lyrics when accepting the best musical crown. “Look around, look around. How lucky we are to be alive right now,” he said.

“Hamilton” went into the night with 16 nominations and, in addition to taking the musical award, won best score, best book, direction, orchestration, choreography and best featured actor and actress statuettes for Renee Elise Goldsberry and Daveed Diggs.

Leslie Odom Jr., who plays Aaron Burr, won best actor in a musical and cheered Miranda for “a new vision of what’s possible.”

He also thanked his wife, actress Nicolette Robinson and his parents.

The show earlier won awards for costume and lighting but lost scenic design to “She Loves Me,” meaning “Hamilton” couldn’t break the record haul by “The Producers.”

Still, few shows get introduced by a sitting president, as Barack and Michelle Obama did for the performance by the show’s cast.

The awards show unspooled with a heavy heart a night after a gunman killed 50 people at a gay Florida nightclub, prompting a Broadway tribute to the victims at the top of the show and a smattering of references to tolerance throughout it.

Host James Corden dedicated the night to celebrating the diversity of Broadway.

“Hate will never win. Together we have to make sure of that. Tonight’s show stands as a symbol and a celebration of that principle,” he said.

Barbra Streisand returned to the Tony stage for the first time in 46 years and acknowledged the killings. “Tonight our joy is tinged with sorrow but we’re here to celebrate Broadway and the beauty that artistry can bring into this world.” Art, she said, can “at times like these console us.”

But for much of the telecast, the mood was light and typical of an awards show.

Miranda, the star and creator of “Hamilton,” won for best score and book, and during one of his trips to the stage, he read from a sonnet, referencing tragedy and urging “love and love and love....”

Broadway’s boast of being more diverse than the Oscars was proved, with black actors winning four awards in the acting categories and whites winning the remaining four.

English actress Cynthia Erivo won best actress for her Broadway debut in “The Color Purple.” She thanked her cast for “making me a stronger woman on that stage.” Her show, which failed to beat “Jersey Boys” for the best musical Tony Award in 2006, won the best musical revival award in 2016.

Orlando club scene another night of drinking, dancing until shots began The ASSOCIATED PRESS

ORLANDO, Fla. – Like young people in clubs the world over, Jon Alamo met up with some friends, and then some more friends. He danced in Pulse’s main room, where people swayed to the beat of salsa music. Then Alamo drifted into the club’s two other rooms, which grooved to more of a hip-hop vibe. He remembers hearing Rihanna’s “Work,” one of his favorite songs, and grinding to it on the dance floor.

It was supposed to be just a night of dancing and drinking, of looking good and gleefully partying into the early morning hours. It was Latin night at Pulse, one of Orlando’s top gay venues, and two drag performers were scheduled to perform, one of them a big draw for appearing on a season of the TV show “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

“I was in the zone,” Alamo recalled.

“I wasn’t even paying attention – just dancing.”

The 22-year-old clothing store sales clerk had arrived at the club at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, clad all in blue from his button-down shirt adorned with palm trees to his loafers. About three and a half hours later, the gunshots began and the first of at least 50 people began to die.

At least 53 more were injured, many of them critically.

Residents of the Delaney Court condos next door to Pulse first heard the shooting about 2:03 a.m. Marlon Massey was watching the movie “Creed” when he heard “pop, pop, pop!” He checked his phone for the time: The shots went on until 2:05 a.m.

A uniformed Orlando police officer working at the club off-duty had heard gunshots himself and spotted Omar Mateen outside the club. He fired his gun at the 29-year-old security guard from Fort Pierce, Florida, and two other officers quickly joined in. Mateen was not armed lightly: Police said he had an AR15 assault-type rifle, a handgun and an explosive device.

Undeterred, he re-entered the club.

Inside, those on the dance floor weren’t sure if what they heard was just part of the DJ’s set.

“Everyone was getting on the floor. ... I thought it was just part of the music, until I saw fire coming out of his gun,” patron Rose Feba explained to the Orlando Sentinel.

Mina Justice was sound asleep when she received the first text from her son, Eddie Justice, who was in the club.

“Mommy I love you,” the first message said. It was 2:06 a.m.

“In club they shooting.”

It was around this time that Alamo wandered back into the main room.

“He was holding a big weapon,” Alamo said. “He had a white shirt and he was holding the weapon. ... You ever seen how Marine guys hold big weapons, shooting from left to right? That’s how he was shooting at people.”

Alamo dashed toward the back of one of the smaller dance rooms, and said people then rushed to an area where two

bouncers had knocked down a wooden fence to create an escape route.

“My first thought was, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to die,’ ” Alamo said, his voice very quiet. “I was praying to God that I would live to see another day. I couldn’t believe this was happening.”

At 2:09 a.m., Pulse posted a chilling, hurried message on its Facebook page: “Everyone get out of pulse and keep running.”

Brand White and his cousin were on the dance floor in the main room when White’s cousin yelled to him, “B, it’s a

guy with a bomb!” Before he knew it, White was hit in the shoulder.

“All of a sudden it just started like a rolling thunder, loud and everything went black,” White wrote in a Facebook message to an Associated Press reporter from his hospital room Sunday. “I think I was trampled.”

He didn’t recall leaving the club, but he remembered the state he was in: “Covered head to toe in blood.”

“I remember screaming and mass chaos,” he wrote. “There were hundreds of people there.”

He made it to the hospital, where he got a blood transfusion. As Sunday wore on, his cousin remained missing.

Brett Rigas and his partner also were dancing in the main room when they heard the crack of gunfire. “About 70 bullets,” Rigas described in a terse Facebook message.

He was shot in the arm and a man next to him was struck in the leg before police entered the room.

“I was behind the bar with four other people under the well. They called out to us and had us run out,” he said.

Rigas saw dead bodies as he barreled out of the club. In the rush to escape, he became separated from his partner,

Sycamore Fire Department celebrates new, upgraded engine with ceremony

news@daily-chronicle.com With the help of current and retired firefighters, as well as community members, the Sycamore Fire Department welcomed its brandnew fire engine with a special “wetdown” ceremony under hot, sunny skies Saturday morning.

The traditional ceremony, which dates back to the 1800s, involves the transfer of water from the old engine to the new one and a spraying from retired firefighters. Children were able to take part in the festivities by drying off the engine after it officially was christened.

“It’s like a change of command ceremony, transitioning from old to new,” Sycamore Fire Chief Peter Polarek said. “It’s important to involve the community because it’s a significant event. This doesn’t happen very often, and we haven’t done anything like this before, so we want to set a new tradition in Sycamore.”

Polarek said the new engine, which took just about a year to build, was necessary because the old 1979 Mack engine was past its service life.

“There are lots of improvements and safety upgrades, which are significant,” Polarek said. “Everybody is very excited about the new engine and the capabilities that come with it.”

Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said the department and city were “blessed” with the grant because it saved the taxpayers a lot of money.

“The ’79 Mack served us well, but this is an opportunity to provide a state-of-the-art engine with new technology, and that’s a wonderful thing for the city,” he said.

OBITUARIES SOLOMON E. FELDMAN Born: March 9, 1933; in Bronx, NY Died: June 11, 2016; in DeKalb, IL

Solomon “Sol” E. Feldman, 83, of DeKalb, died Saturday, June 11, 2016.

He was born on March 9, 1933, in Bronx, NY. He earned a bachelor’s degree at New York University.

After NYU, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany from 1954 to 1956 during the Korean War. He married Margot Wolf in Yonkers, N.Y., on Dec. 29, 1956. He then earned his Ph.D. at Indiana University after completing his residency in Connecticut.

Sol was an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison during the early 1960s. He then became a professor of psychology at Northern Illinois University, a position he held for more than 30 years.

While teaching clinical psychology at NIU, he mentored numerous doctoral candidates and supervised clinicians at the NIU Psychological Services Center. He was a consultant for the Singer Zone Mental Health Center in Rockford and for the DeKalb police and fire departments.

In addition, he was a founding board member of the DeKalb Villages.

He also enjoyed helping others in private practice both independently and later with Benchmark Associates. His numerous publications included the 1967 book “Experimental Studies of Schizophrenia,” which he co-authored with the National Institute of Mental Health.

He was an early member of Congregation Beth Shalom in DeKalb.

During his retirement, Sol was the first curriculum chair of NIU’s Lifelong Learning Institute, where he was a well-liked and respected convener of study groups.

His many interests included reading, American and world history, old-time radio, tennis, competitive bridge, supporting and watching NIU athletics, and rooting for the Green Bay Packers and the New York Yankees.

He is survived by his sons, William Feldman, DeKalb, and Douglas Feldman, Wheaton; his daughter, Shari (Alan) Baumler, his grandson, Jason, and his granddaughter, Rachel, all of Indiana, Pa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margot; his parents, Noel and Lillian Feldman; his sister, Diane Feldman; and his brother, Martin Feldman.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 13, in the Garden of Shalom at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb, with Rabbi Maralee Gordon officiating. After the burial, friends are invited to join the family at Congregation Beth Shalom, 820 Russell Road, DeKalb.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Congregation Beth Shalom or to NIU’s Lifelong Learning Institute, in care of the NIU Foundation.

“It means reliable service, and it puts us on par with other fire departments,” he said. “There are a lot of additional safety features, and everything will just be more secure.”

Whitney Wheeler’s husband is a firefighter, and she’s happy the new engine will keep the firefighters safer while they do their jobs.

“I know the guys are very excited to have new equipment to keep up with the times. My husband has talked a lot about the process, and they’re just happy to have the latest technology,” she said.

Lt. Tal Hickey described the new engine as “progress” for the department. He said firefighters used to ride in open cabs, and the new engine will allow the firefighters to be safely buckled inside the cab.

“It’s always exciting to get new equipment, and we feel safer and have confidence in the engine,” he said.” We’re pleased the community has shown up to show their support and excitement for the department.”

Toni and Ron Mack of Sycamore don’t have any relatives in the department, but they wanted to come out and show their support and respect for the fire department.

“We appreciate the good work

Toni Mack, who has never seen a wet-down ceremony, said she comes from a family of firefighters, so she wanted to experience one.

“I grew up looking at my uncles’ boots in the closet, so the memories come back, and it makes me think of my family. The ceremony was done very well, in fireman style,” she said.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, 14th Congressional District, also was on

hand to show his support for the fire department. He said it’s important to celebrate new technology that keeps the public safer.

“I’m very grateful for their service and the safety we enjoy,” he said.”Communities are growing, and we see how devastating fires can be, so if there’s anything that can save lives, it’s worth it.”

Polarek said the new engine still needs a few tweaks, but it should be ready to be put into service in a week or two.

SYCAMORE – Board members will review a petition to annex 168 acres of undesignated land into Sycamore School District 427 at a special meeting Tuesday.

The group of 12 homes along Coltonville Road between First Street and the South Branch of the Kishwaukee River have Sycamore mailing addresses, but fall just inside DeKalb School District 428’s boundaries.

Although the property is within the county, it would need to be annexed into either Sycamore or

DeKalb if development were to occur, DeKalb County Planning Director Paul Miller said.

The property has no designated land use, although land on the north side of the road, where the houses are located, is zoned residential, and the property on the south side of the road is zoned agricultural, school board documents show. Most of the 100-acre parcel on the east side of the property is in a floodplain, Miller said.

There are no school-aged children living in the area; however, at least one of the property owners believes being within District 427 boundaries would make her house more market-

able.

District 427 board members reviewed the petition May 27. Now they must choose whether to support or oppose the request with a resolution or submit a letter to the Regional Board of Education expressing a neutral stance.

“My initial reaction is just to remain neutral on this and see what happens,” District 427 board President Jim Dombek said during the May 27 meeting.

The District 427 board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the district’s Administration Building, 245 W. Exchange St., Sycamore.

The DeKalb County Health Department is encouraging residents to be vigilant about eliminating sources for mosquitoes to breed, as well as using personal protection to avoid mosquito bites.

Warmer weather means spending more time outdoors, but it also means mosquitoes are becoming active. It’s never too early for residents to inspect their homes and yards for sources of standing water where mosquitoes are likely to breed.

The health department monitors for West Nile virus (WNV) activity by collecting mosquitoes in traps in the area. Taking precautionary measures to protect yourself and your family reduces the risk of being bitten by any infected mosquito, including those that can transmit WNV and the Zika virus.

Recommendations to prevent mosquito breeding include: • Discard old tires, buckets, drums or any water-holding containers.

• Keep roof gutters and downspouts clear of debris.

• Keep trash containers covered.

• Empty plastic wading pools at least

once a week, and store indoors when not in use.

• Drain unused swimming pools.

• Fill in tree-rot holes and hollow stumps that hold water.

• Change water in bird baths and plant urns at least weekly.

Recommendations to prevent mosquito bites include: • Wear light-colored clothing that minimizes exposed skin and provides some protection from mosquito bites.

• Make sure door and window screens fit tightly and that all holes are repaired.

• Apply insect repellent that includes DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535 according to label instructions; consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

• While most people infected with WNV have no symptoms of illness, some may become ill, usually three to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. In some individuals, particularly the elderly, the virus can cause muscle weakness, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), stiff neck, stupor, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, coma or death.

A second option calls for putting off buying one ambulance and one squad car until 2017, which would reduce the deficit by $191,000. A fourth option calls for reducing the deficit by $400,000.

“Under all scenarios, the city would maintain fund balances of 25 percent,” finance director Cathy Haley said.

DeKALB – The DeKalb City Council is set to decide today how much red ink it wants in next year’s general fund budget.

The City Council will meet at 6 p.m. today at City Hall, 200 S. Fourth St., to consider four options presented for what is being called the fiscal 2016.5 budget.

Because the city is changing its fiscal year to align with the calendar year, the budget up for discussion covers spending from July 1 to Dec. 31.

As initially presented by city staff, the budget calls for spending $49.4 million with total revenue of $54.8 million. That includes capital spending and pension funds. The city’s general fund shows spending of $21.4 million with revenue of $20.8 million, for a deficit of about $600,000.

Even with deficit spending in the general fund, the budget, as presented, meets the council’s fund balance requirement for having 25 percent of expenses held in reserve. However, after a joint meeting of the City Council and the Finance Adviso-

Ex-Gov. Quinn petitions for mayor term limits

CHICAGO – Former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, nodding to his petition-passing days, kicked off a signature drive Sunday to impose a two-term limit on Chicago’s mayor and create a citywide elected consumer advocate position.

The binding referendums could be on ballots as early as November or in the 2018 cycle, meaning there’s potential to make Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel ineligible to seek a third term in 2019.

Quinn insisted his effort wasn’t aimed at any individual, and getting nearly 53,000 valid signatures before an Aug. 8 deadline for November’s ballot would be challenging.

He explained how he got his start in petition drives – including laying the groundwork for the Citizens Utility Board – and wanted to give residents a way to bypass the mayor and City Council.

Enlisted sailors museum proposed in N. Chicago

GREAT LAKES – North Chicago could soon be home to the country’s first museum dedicated to enlisted sailors.

The National Museum of the American Sailor Foundation is launching a $40 million fundraising campaign for a museum near Naval Station Great Lakes.

Ron Lanz, executive director for the foundation, said there are 10 other museums in the U.S. Navy system, but none of them are dedicated to the enlisted sailor, a category that represents 271,000 sailors out of 400,000. He said the National Museum of the American Sailor would be the only museum dedicated to sailors who have recently enrolled in the Navy.

Drug trafficking allegations against FedEx head to trial after 2 years

SAN FRANCISCO – Two giants – the U.S. government and FedEx – are set to do battle in a federal court over the explosive claim that the shipping company knowingly delivered illegal prescription drugs such as Ambien from pill mills to dealers and addicts, some of whom died.

FedEx has denied the charges and said it only shipped what it believed were legal drugs from licensed pharmacies. Opening statements are scheduled to start today.

The trial – nearly two-years in the making – is unusual both for the government’s decision to bring drug charges against a package delivery company and the lack of a settlement.

Rival UPS Inc. paid $40 million in 2013 to resolve similar allegations that arose from a years-long government crackdown on Internet pharmacies that ship drugs to customers without valid pre-

scriptions.

The stakes are high for Memphis, Tennessee-based FedEx. Although no FedEx officials are facing prison time, the charges carry a potential fine of $1.6 billion.

“It’s incredibly rare for there to be any trial in the prosecution of a corporation,” said Brandon Garrett, a professor at the University of Virginia School of Law who studies corporate crime.

“Many large corporations like FedEx have received deferred or nonprosecution deals where they avoid an indictment all together.”

Prosecutors said FedEx starting in 2000 conspired with two Internet pharmacy organizations to ship powerful sleep aids, sedatives, painkillers and other drugs to customers who had not been physically examined by a doctor.

FedEx continued to ship drugs from the pharmacy groups even as law enforcement officials shut down some of their affiliates, prosecutors allege.

The crux of the government’s case

is that FedEx knew the drugs were illegal and headed for dealers and addicts, but delivered them anyway. The company’s drivers expressed safety concerns that FedEx trucks were being stopped on the road by online pharmacy customers demanding packages of pills and that the delivery address was a parking lot, school or vacant home where several carloads of people were waiting for their drugs, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Federal law enforcement officials told FedEx as early as 2004 that illegal Internet pharmacies were using its delivery services for prescription drugs, and company employees noted that Internet pharmacies for which the company continued to deliver were linked to ones that law enforcement shut down, prosecutors said.

FedEx said the pharmacies were licensed by state boards of pharmacy and registered with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which allowed them to continue operating. To

the best of FedEx’s knowledge, they were supplying legal medications, said Patrick Fitzgerald, FedEx’s senior vice president for marketing and communications.

FedEx’s legal team includes Cristina Arguedas and Allen Ruby, who also represented slugger Barry Bonds in his perjury trial over alleged steroids use.

Arguedas’ office in court documents said FedEx assisted authorities in the investigation of online pharmacies with the understanding that law enforcement officials would determine whether the pharmacies were legal. Arguedas has said the U.S. Postal Service handled the same types of online pharmacy packages as FedEx, and two DEA officials who regularly talked to FedEx have said they never told the company to stop shipping for any online pharmacies.

The trial, which is scheduled to go into August, is not before a jury after FedEx agreed to have Senior U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer decide the case.

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Stanford University graduating students and women’s rights advocates used the school’s commencement ceremony to again express their anger over the six-month jail sentence given to a former student for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman.

A handful of students demonstrated Sunday during “Wacky Walk,” a rambunctious, slow-moving stroll by graduating students dressed in zany costumes that precedes the official graduation events.

One person held a sign that declared “Stanford protects rapists.” Another graduate’s sign was a message to the victim: “You are a warrior.”

Organizers said they wanted to show solidarity to the woman sexually assaulted on campus last year by former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner.

“It’s very important to amplify the voice of survivors,” said Brianne Huntsman, a protest organizer.

The victim’s emotional statement to the court about how the assault devastated her life was widely shared online, attracting national attention to the case.

Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, whose rousing keynote speech called on Republicans to reconsider their endorsement of Donald Trump, closed his address urging sexual assaults be taken seriously.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama decried the deadliest mass shooting in American history on Sunday as a terrorist act targeting a place of “solidarity and empowerment” for gays and lesbians. He urged Americans to decide “if that’s the kind of country we want to be.”

Hours after a gunman killed at least 50 people in Orlando, Obama said the FBI would investigate the nightclub shooting as terrorism, but said the alleged shooter’s motivations were unclear. He said the U.S. “must spare no effort” to determine whether the suspect, identified by authorities as Omar Mateen, had any ties to extremist groups.

“What is clear is he was a person filled with hatred,” Obama said of the alleged shooter. He added: “We know enough to say that this was an act of terror and an act of hate. And as Americans, we are united in grief, in outrage, and in resolve to defend our people.”

Obama had planned to travel to Wisconsin on Wednesday for his first campaign appearance of the 2016 race, a joint rally with Hillary Clinton in Green Bay, Wisconsin. But Clinton’s campaign and the White House said that event was being postponed in light of the attack.

Three patrons, including a performer, ran to the nearby home of club regular David “Brock” Cornelius. Cornelius had gone to a different bar Saturday night and wasn’t yet home, but he texted them his garage code and they hid in his house.

Police said a dozen or so other patrons took cover in a restroom.

At 2:39 a.m., Eddie Justice texted his mother from the bathroom, pleading for her to call police: “Call them mommy Now.” “He’s coming I’m gonna die.”

Justice asked her son if anyone was hurt and which bathroom he was in.

“Lots. Yes,” he responded at 2:42 a.m.

The last text she received from Eddie was at 2:50 a.m. She still hasn’t heard from her son.

“All I heard was gunfire after gunfire,” Brandon Wolf, who was in a restroom hiding, told the Sentinel. “Eventually, I thought you were supposed to run out of ammunition. But it just kept going and going,” he said.

What happened in the three hours after the shooting broke out and the gunman was killed was not immediately clear.

The president, who has proclaimed June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, called the attack “heartbreaking” for the LGBT community. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said that officers initially mistakenly thought the gunman had strapped explosives to some of his victims after a bomb robot sent back images of a battery part next to a body. That held paramedics up from entering the club until it was determined the part had fallen out of an exit sign or smoke detector, the mayor said.

The robot was sent in after SWAT team members used explosive charges and an armored vehicle to knock down a wall in an effort to access the club.

About 5 a.m., a decision was made to rescue the remaining club-goers, who authorities said likely were in one of the smaller dance rooms, the Adonis Room.

Law enforcement officers used two explosive devices to try to distract the killer and then 11 officers stormed the club and exchanged gunfire with Mateen.

The explosives jolted some Pulse neighbors awake, including Dorian Ackerman, 28, who noted that it was just after 5 a.m.

“I heard a woman screaming,” he said. “It was really terrifying.”

The gunman started firing, hitting an officer who was saved by protective armor.

“That’s when we took him down,” Dyer said.

For Obama, the hastily arranged remarks were the latest in what’s become a tragically familiar routine. Since he took office in 2009, Obama has appeared before cameras more than a dozen times following mass shootings and issued written statements after many others.

The president made no new, specific call for stricter gun laws. Though he lamented “how easy it is” for people to get their hands on weapons, Obama appeared resigned to the likelihood that he’ll be unable as president to substantially address the mass shootings that have proliferated in recent years.

“We have to decide if that’s the kind of country we want to be,” Obama said.

“To actively do nothing is a decision as well.”

After a gunman in Newtown killed 20 first graders and six adults in 2012, Obama dedicated much of the start of his second term to pushing legislation to expand background checks, ban certain assault-style weapons and cap the size of ammunition clips. That measure collapsed in the Senate, and since then, the political makeup of Congress have made new gun laws appear out of reach.

Still, Obama has sought to take incremental steps using his own authority to tighten rules for obtaining a gun.

Orlando massacre spurs grief and fear for LGBT Americans

NEW YORK – The gay, lesbian and transgender community has seen violence before – from Harvey Milk to Matthew Shepard – and an ever-lengthening list of transgender women. But never anything like this.

Sunday’s massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, grimly changed the equation, stirring communal fears and swiftly prompting tighter security at gay pride events. The gunman, identified as Omar Mateen of Fort Pierce, Florida, told his father he had been disturbed by seeing two men kissing in Miami.

The attack on the Pulse nightclub, which killed at least 50 people and was the deadliest U.S. mass shooting to date, occurred amid numerous events nationwide celebrating LGBT Pride Month. In several other cities hosting events on Sunday – including block parties in Boston and a festival in Washington – authorities beefed up the police presence.

LGBT activists had no doubt that their community was the intended target.

“Our practices and institutions may change in light of this tragedy – LGBT gathering places may have more security now,” said Rev. Alisan Rowland, pastor of the LGBT-welcoming Metropolitan Community Church of New Orleans. “But we will never, ever go away.

We will never be cowed.”

Rachel B. Tiven, CEO of the LGBTrights group Lambda Legal, said the continued vilification of LGBT people by their detractors, and the continued resistance to expansion of their civil

rights, was “an invitation to violence.”

“When people are targeted by others who are scared of difference, they’re not safe when they go dancing, they’re not safe when they go out to pray,” she said. “If we live in culture where fear of difference is encouraged, that can, in the hands of crazy people, have dreadful consequences.”

Robert Matencio, who works as a host at Neighbours, said the club responded to the arson attack by adding extra security guards during large special events, and training employees in crowd control.

In many cities, vigils were planned at LGBT community centers and other gathering spots to commemorate the victims in Orlando. In New York City, LGBT people and their allies converged on the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village in spontaneous reaction to the shooting. The Manhattan bar became a national symbol of gay rights after a 1969 police raid led to violent street riots.

Stonewall is “where we go when things like this happen,” said Andy Humm, host of the TV show, “Gay USA.” Many gay bars added security measures, or considered doing so in the aftermath of the Orlando attack.

“As a club owner this is our biggest fear,” said Jesse Pandolfo, owner of WonderLust, which opened nearly a year ago in Jackson, Mississippi.

She said at least one armed security officer is on duty whenever the club is open; more if she expects a big crowd.

“We are family, and this is really hard for us to handle,” she said. “It hits hard, really deeply, and it’s scary and it’s saddening. ... We have been pushed around, we have been victimized for a long time.”

Appeal of e-cigarettes still an issue for FDA Electronic cigarettes have boomed since their introduction to the U.S. market in 2007, fueling the growth of an industry that went largely unregulated until last month. That’s when the Food and Drug Administration finally announced federal restrictions on the devices, including a ban on sales to minors and required safety reviews for products sold to adults.

But while the new rules strike a reasonable middle ground between leniency and prohibition, they don’t go far enough to reduce the appeal of e-cigarettes to young people. Nicotine products that taste like candy or fruit are a particular draw for curious teenagers, and it’s troubling, to say the least, that the FDA overlooked its own data and decided against putting limits on e-cigarette flavorings.

E-cigarettes, also known as vaporizers or vapes, are small, battery-operated devices that convert a liquid containing nicotine, glycerin and a flavoring into a vapor that users inhale. And while flavors other than menthol are banned in traditional cigarettes in the U.S., e-cigarette users can choose from a vast menu of more than 7,000 flavorings, including bubble gum, cotton candy, Gummy Bear and a combination of milk chocolate and peanut butter.

These sweet flavorings are especially enticing to young people, whose use of e-cigarettes tripled between 2013 and 2014 and continues to soar, even as the percentage of those who smoke conventional cigarettes has dwindled. The rate of U.S. high school students who vape rose from 1.5 percent in 2011 to 16 percent in 2015, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Over the same period, vaping rates among middle schoolers went from 0.6 percent to 5 percent.

Eighty-one percent of first-time e-cigarette users ages 12 to 17 opted for a flavored product, while 85 percent of those who continued to vape regularly chose flavorings, scientists at the FDA, the National Institute on Drug Abuse and other institutions concluded in a study published last year.

The popularity of e-cigarettes means that “teen tobacco use hasn’t declined at all since 2011,” the online magazine The Verge declared in April. And because young e-cigarette users are exposed to nicotine – an addictive drug – at a time when their brains still are developing, they may be more likely to start smoking conventional cigarettes than their peers who’ve never smoked or vaped, according to the CDC. Vape flavorings clearly are appealing to young people, and by failing to ban or severely limit their sale, the FDA has passed up an obvious opportunity to keep adolescents from developing a deadly addiction. If the agency takes seriously its responsibility to regulate risks to public health, it should recognize and close this loophole.

And it is celebrated at the pinnacle of power.

Last Thursday, President Barack Obama feted 300 guests for his last Pride month at the White House. On Saturday, there were pride parades in Boston and in Washington, D.C. The last Sunday in June is the traditional date for the parade in New York City.

On Sunday, LGBT people from all over the country watched performers and listened to speeches at the annual Capital Pride Festival in Washington.

Because it took place on Pennsylvania Avenue, the dome of the U.S. Capitol is a majestic presence in the background.

You cannot underestimate the power of being an LGBT person at that festival with one of the most potent symbols of your nation loom-

ing so large. Only the White House lit up in the gay pride rainbow colors last year eclipsed it in its power.

What happened in Orlando is a tragedy for Orlando, for Florida and for the nation.

It will reignite the gun debate, for sure. Yet, it is a devastating blow to the LGBT community in America.

Whether it turns out that the massacre at Pulse was solely motivated by anti-LGBT animus, gay people around the country will feel especially vulnerable during this pride month. One thing is clear, with the shocking toll killers with guns are racking up, we all must take care.

GOP knew exactly what it was getting into with Trump Republican establishment figures are feigning surprise over their nominee’s racism, misogyny, narcissism and contempt for the rule of law, but they are being disingenuous. They’ve known for years the sort of man Donald Trump is. And they welcomed him and his money.

Now that the contemptible Trump is the titular head of the GOP, he threatens to destroy it – to so taint the party of Abraham Lincoln that it will never again appeal to a majority of American voters.

That’s especially true of voters of color, most of whom Trump has treated to an egregious litany of contempt.

But it’s also true of women, upward of 70 percent of whom regard Trump unfavorably, according to recent polls.

Even now, however, most leading Republicans lack the moral courage to reject him as a possible president of the U.S. Despite their earlier criticisms of the celebrity TV host, they’ve fallen in line behind him.

The hypocrisy has been cringe-inducing, the gravity-defying reversals revolting.

During the Republican primaries, Marco Rubio called Trump a “con artist” and predicted that having Trump as the nominee would

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker “shatter and fracture the Republican Party and the conservative movement.”

You may recall that Chris Christie, who joined Trump’s claque ahead of the stampede, once dismissed the real estate mogul’s lack of preparation for office with this dead-on critique: “Showtime is over. ... We are not electing an entertainer-in-chief.” Lindsey Graham characterized Trump, accurately, as a “race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot.”

At least Graham has had the decency to suggest that his fellow Republicans reconsider their support for Trump. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., has done just that, rescinding his earlier endorsement and saying that Trump “does not have the temperament” to be president.

That may not hold up in the history books as the sort of stinging rebuke that Joseph Welch issued to Joe McCarthy – “At long last, have you left no sense of decency?” – but it has gained attention because it goes against the grain.

Most leading Republicans are

hanging on, claiming that a President Trump would be better than his rival, Hillary Clinton. That’s true, apparently, even if he’s a racist who would upend the Constitution, ban Muslims, berate and intimidate judges and mock people with disabilities.

Perhaps the most embarrassing case of spinelessness is that of House Speaker Paul Ryan, who has long been touted as the party’s best hope for a youthful rejuvenation.

Ryan rightly called out Trump for his awful smear of a sitting federal judge, characterizing it as “the textbook definition of a racist comment.”

So did Ryan then turn his back on Trump and suggest Republican voters do the same? Oh, no.

Trump’s remarks were racist, but Ryan still is supporting him.

While this has been dispiriting to watch, it is hardly surprising.

The GOP has had Trump-ism in its bloodstream for decades now, and the party’s leaders have nurtured and fueled it. They have pandered to the nativists and xenophobes among the party’s core voters, fueled the paranoia of the anti government crowd and cozied up to the racists.

When President Barack Obama was elected, spurring an intense backlash from racially antagonistic white voters, Republican leaders

rushed to surf the waves.

They were silent as conservative talk-radio hosts and pundits mocked and disparaged first lady Michelle Obama, with some, including conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, insisting that she’s a man in drag. They said nothing as tea partiers mounted protests with ugly signs depicting the president as a witch doctor.

They were complicit when the so-called birther movement swept certain corners of the conservative constituency.

And who was one of the leaders of that cult of fringe lunacy that insists that the president was not born in the U.S.?

Why, a certain Donald Trump was, whipping up a ludicrous idea that was nothing more than an attempt to delegitimize the first black president, to paint him as non American, to claim he was a usurper to the Oval Office. So there is nothing surprising about Trump’s current views.

Still, it’s discouraging to watch a once-great political party poison itself with the bile of bigotry, even if its members have been sipping from the vial for some time.

One year after celebrating the most joyous pride month in U.S. history with the Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in this country, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the nation as a whole now are in mourning.

As of this writing, at least 50 people are dead and 53 were injured when a madman unleashed hell inside a gay nightclub in the wee hours Sunday.

This is by far the worst mass shooting in American history.

Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old American citizen who lives in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

He was killed in a shootout with police inside the Pulse nightclub. In

explaining a possible motive, Mateen’s father told media that his son became “very angry” after seeing two men kiss in downtown Miami a few months ago.

Authorities are calling this an act of terrorism.

The nation has been through this so many times in the last decade that we might as well lower our flags to half-mast on a permanent basis.

We were horrified by the slaughter of 27 children and adults at a school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012. We were aghast at the murder of 32 people at Virginia Tech in 2007.

The body count in Orlando bumps those two mass shootings way down on this country’s grisly and growing tally.

More on 34 sales return Father’s Day weekend DAILY CHRONICLE

More on 34 has become an annual weekend of treasure hunting in the Illinois countryside along Route 34 for bargain hunters, antique buyers, and collectors from across the United States.

Ten years, 20 communities, more than 100 miles across five counties set the stage for the granddaddy linear yard sale in northern Illinois on Father’s Day weekend, June 17 and 18.

You never know what you will find along the way: yard sales, antique shows, craft shows, flea markets and farmers markets in communities from Galesburg to Aurora. Sales can be found in parking lots, in city parks and in many yards all along Route 34. Sales typically open at 8 a.m., but some open earlier or remain open later. A few sellers even begin their sales on Thursday and continue through Sunday.

In Sandwich, Timber Creek Inn and Suites hosts the town’s largest garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Restoration expert to discuss playhouse DAILY CHRONICLE The Ellwood House Museum invites local residents to learn more about everyone’s favorite playhouse, the 1891 Little House, at 6 p.m. Friday.

Restoration specialist Roger Keys will give a program on the Little House’s long history and Keys’ recent efforts to restore the structure.

Originally built as a contractor’s model, the Little House was purchased by Will Ellwood as a playhouse for his daughters.

Ellwood children enjoyed the Little House for many years before giving it to other local families. In the 1970s, the Little House was welcomed back to the Ellwood property and can now can be enjoyed by all visitors to the museum. This year marks

the Little House’s 125th birthday.

“Bringing the Little House Back to Life” is part of Local Lore, the museum’s adult lecture series. Once a month, Local Lore shares stories relating to DeKalb’s history. Each lecture features a different guest speaker.

The program begins at 6 p.m. The lecture will be in the Ellwood House Visitor Center, 509 N. First St. in DeKalb. The Little House will be open for viewing after the event. This program is free of charge.

Dale and Linda Drendel will open their Hampshire farmstead to the public for a dairy breakfast and farm tour from 6 to 11 a.m.

The Drendels offer this experience to visit a farm and provide others with a better understanding of the origins of their food, such as dairy products.

“This Saturday morning family activity is meant to be enjoyed by all ages,” Dale Drendel said in a news release. “We welcome visitors and hope they see this as an opportunity to learn more about how we care for our animals and produce fresh and wholesome milk.”

One of the highlights of the tour is watching some of the 150 dairy cows being milked in the milking parlor. The modern parlor accommodates 11 Holstein cows at a time and offers viewers an up-close look at the farm’s automation and the transfer of milk from the cow to the bulk tank.

Milking demonstrations will occur from 6 to 9 a.m.

The farm visit also offers a tour of the barns to see the young dairy calves, heifers and cows. Visitors can milk a cow by hand just like farmers used to do many years ago.

Besides the cows, visitors will see farm equipment used on the dairy and grain farm and get to sit on the seat of a modern tractor, plus participate in a scavenger farm hunt.

A hearty farm-style breakfast will be served from 6 to 11 a.m., complete with pancakes, sausage, applesauce, cheese, milk, coffee and ice cream. A donation of $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 10 will be collected at the farm. The price includes breakfast and the farm visit. Children age 4 and younger eat for free. All proceeds go for dairy education in local schools.

At the next STEM Café, “Saving the Brain,” Northern Illinois University Associate Professor of Psychology Doug Wallace will discuss the science of what happens to the brain during these diseases and the possibility of life-changing therapies that alleviate

Imagine getting lost in your own home or neighborhood. Imagine feeling disoriented, unsure of where you are or how you got there. For individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s and other neurological disorders or trauma, this “spatial disorientation” can be a daily occurrence, one that

causes significant distress.

Wallace’s research focuses on the neural networks we use to navigate the world. By understanding how these networks develop, he argues, we can learn how they might be repaired.

Spatial disorientation, for example, could become a thing of the past.

“The human brain is extraordinarily flexible,” Wallace said in a news release. “It is capable of adapting to all sorts of setbacks. I’ll be talking about how ongoing research into the brain’s

adaptability can help doctors encourage the highest level of adaptation, ensuring that people with Alzheimer’s and other brain conditions can recover as much functioning as possible.”

This event is part of NIU STEM Outreach’s series of STEM Cafés, all of which are free and open to the public.

Beloved Community dinner scheduled on Sunday

The next Beloved Community dinner will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. Fourth St. This is the 16th potluck dinner of the series hosted by the faith communities.

The focus is to bring people from different walks of life together for an evening of conversation.

Old North Grove School Days to be celebrated

Old North Grove School Days is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the school at 26745 Brickville Road in Sycamore.

This year’s theme, “Farming 1878-1952,” highlights the effects of farm life on rural students of that era. Displays of equipment and artifacts will correspond with the theme.

There will be firsthand accounts and history of the period given.

Old time games, Maypole dancing, a bake sale and raffle again will make for an old-time day in the country. Sycamore High School FFA students will provide a petting zoo on Saturday.

A hot dog lunch will be offered for sale on Saturday and root beer floats are the refreshment on Sunday.

The Carbon Tax and Dividend proposed by the Citizen’s Climate Lobby will be the topic of 350Kishwaukee’s meeting Friday.

350Kishwaukee is a group of local people who are concerned about climate changes and believe we must transition from fossil fuels to the renewable energy that can be provided by the sun, wind, hydro and thermal power.

One of the solutions discussed at the Paris United Nations Climate talks last winter was to put a price on carbon to assist the global economy in moving away from fossil fuels.

The meeting will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center, 1021 State St. in DeKalb.

There is a parking lot one-half block south off 11th Street.

The building has an assessable lift. The meeting is free and everyone is welcome.

EAST PEORIA – The bats finally picked up, the defense was solid and Morgan Newport was pitching as she had all year – in other words, the DeKalb softball team had a lot of momentum down a run after the top of the sixth against Downers Grove South.

But then the Mustangs exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth – none of which were earned – and cruised to a 10-1 win over the Barbs in the Class 4A State Championship third-place game Saturday.

Newport said helping the Barbs to their first appearance in the state tournament was a great way to end her high school career.

“This has been such an unbelievable experience,” said Newport, who is set to continue her career at Northwestern next year. “It’s an awesome way to cap off an awesome four years of being a Barb. I’ve been so blessed to be at DeKalb High School and represent them every game, and it’s something I’m going to miss and I’m going to remember for ever.”

Jeff Davis said the season ended up being great from start to finish, and was glad to see his team rewarded with a fourth-place trophy.

“Some teams are going to say we didn’t deserve to be here, but we wouldn’t be here if we didn’t deserve it,” Davis said. “We worked our butt off and we upset some good teams. I’m just real proud of those kids.”

The Barbs were playing in the third-place game after a 5-0 loss Friday night against Oak Park-River Forest, a game in which they committed five errors. DeKalb ended up taking fourth place, but had four errors on Saturday – including three in the sixth inning.

“We had another defensive blunder, but I thought we played five good innings of softball,” Davis said. “After five, you’re thinking that we’re hanging in there. We’re playing decent. And then we had a rough inning there. The wheels fell off and it is what it is.”

The Barbs (26-8) were down 2-0 heading into the sixth when Newport started things off legging out an infield hit, then stole second when she caught the Mustangs (36-4) sleeping and moved to third on a single by Mallory Warner.

Barbs ace Newport battles against star hitter Hedgcock

DeKalb ace Morgan Newport battled Downers Grove South star Caroline Hedgcock in the final game of the season for both teams as the Mustangs pulled away late in a 10-1 victory in the third-place game at the Class 4A Softball State Tournament on a hot and humid night at Eastside Centre in East Peoria.

Hedgcock, a senior who started in the circle for the Mustangs, came out on top on Saturday, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Newport pitched well, allowing just two earned runs and walking one before the Mustangs (36-4) opened the floodgates with an eight-run sixth inning that was plagued with errors for DeKalb, which committed three of its four miscues in the frame.

Hedgcock originally committed to Maryland, where she would have continued the battle in the Big Ten against Northwestern-bound Newport, but she switched over to Arkansas when former Maryland coach Courtney Deifel took over the job with the Razorbacks.

Being able to watch Morgan two great softball play- Newport ers battle doesn’t go unappreciated during the game, DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said.

“You’re used to watching it online, and you’re thinking you can play with those kids,” Davis said of the match-up between the two stars. “And you get down here and they’re a lot better than they look on TV, that’s for sure.”

Newport said she knew coming in she had to be careful against Hedgcock, who entered the state tournament hitting .543 with 22 home runs

and 66 RBIs. However, Newport provided plenty of power in the circle for the Barbs (26-8), coming into the final two games of the season with a record of 22-6 and a 0.90 ERA. “It’s always fun to see a great pitcher face a great hitter,” Downers Grove South coach Ron Havelka said. “It’s always going to be exciting and we’ve had that a lot this year because we had a tough schedule. Great pitchers have faced Caroline and she’s done quite well this year. ... (Great players) know the moment and they know who’s out there and they concentrate a little more, I think.”

Hedgcock, who was the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year for softball, got the Mustangs on the board with a one-out single to right field to put them ahead, 1-0, in the first inning. In her second plate appearance, Newport forced her to fly out to right field.

The Downers Grove South star hit an RBI double to right field in the bottom of the fifth and walked in the bottom of the sixth.

“I love playing against great competition, I live for it,” Hedgcock said

of facing Newport. “I love the hard situations.”

While Newport pitched the entire game, Hedgcock was pulled from the circle in the top of the sixth – when the Barbs rallied for their only run of the day. Newport was the catalyst for the run, singling to start the inning and ran to second while the ball got back to Hedgcock.

She eventually scored to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Newport’s fingerprints on the Barbs’ first trip to the state tournament in school history were on more than the pitching rubber. She was the best hitter on the team, finishing with a batting average of .482 and eight doubles, six triples, two home runs, 34 runs and 36 RBIs. However, facing Hedgcock gave Newport another example of the kind of hitters she’ll face as she joins the Division I ranks next season, saying the amount of mental energy it takes battling the star hitter.

“I just have to be so focused on every pitch,” Newport said. “You can’t take a single pitch off because that’s when they’re going to get you.”

“We hadn’t hit the ball well for the first five innings,” Havelka said.

“I thought we may have been able to scratch in a run or two or something like that. I didn’t think we’d get eight in one inning.”

Davis said the team was feeling good

after cutting the lead to 2-1.

“It gave us that energy boost we were looking for on a hot day,” Davis said. “But I think (defense) has been our Achilles heel all year. We had a run there where we played pretty good defense, and we thought we cured that.

But we obviously didn’t. It’s a good young team, hopefully the bar is set high and hopefully we can do this again someday.”

Penguins beat the Sharks to win a 4th Stanley Cup title

The Associated Press SAN JOSE, Calif. – A turnaround season for the Pittsburgh Penguins ended with Sidney Crosby once again holding the Stanley Cup. Crosby set up Kris Letang’s goahead goal midway through the second period and the Pittsburgh Penguins won the fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history by beating the San Jose Sharks, 3-1, in Game 6 of the final Sunday night.

Brian Dumoulin opened the scoring with a power-play goal and Patric Hornqvist added a late empty-netter.

Matt Murray made 18 saves to give the Penguins a championship seven

years to the day after they beat Detroit for their third title.

The game ended when Crosby cleared the puck the length of the ice with San Jose on the power play, setting off a wild celebration.

Three nights after squandering a chance to become the first Pittsburgh team to win a title in front of the home fans in 56 years, the Penguins finished the job on the road just like they did in Minnesota (1991), Chicago (1992) and Detroit (2009) in past title runs.

The championship in Detroit was supposed to be the first of many for a team led by players such as Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

But a series of concussions that

led Crosby to miss almost an entire season and a half, and a run of early playoff exits that included twice blowing 3-1 series leads prevented a second celebration in the Crosby era until now.

This didn’t seem like it would be a season to remember in early December, when the Penguins were near the bottom of the standings in the Eastern Conference and coach Mike Johnston was fired.

But led by coach Mike Sullivan, the Penguins recovered to make the playoffs as the second-place team in the Metropolitan Division. Pittsburgh knocked off the New York Rangers in the first round, Presidents’ Trophy-winning Washington in round

two and then rallied from a 3-2 series deficit to beat Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference final.

The Penguins then were in control for almost the entire Cup final. They did not trail until Game 5 at home and responded to a strong push from San Jose in the clincher to avoid a decisive seventh game. Pittsburgh held San Jose to just one shot on goal in the first 19 minutes of the third period to preserve the one-goal lead and sealed the win with Hornqvist’s empty-netter.

Logan Couture scored the lone goal for the Sharks, whose first trip to the final in their 25-year history ended two wins short of a title. Martin Jones made 24 saves and was San Jose’s best player for the series.

“That’s the thing that separates Chicago from a lot of these small-market teams. People recognize who you are.

People want to know what’s going on with the team. I’ll be walking down the street and they’ll be like, ‘Hey, what’s up Kyle?’ It’s like I’ve been friends with the guy for 10 years.”

Although he loves “the melting pot of culture of Chicago,” Long, who lives in Lake Forest, doesn’t get out much.

But when he does, he enjoys connecting with Bears fans and Chicagoans.

“You’ve got to watch what you do, because everybody’s got their snapchats out, everybody’s got their cell phone,” he said. “But it’s always great to have a beer with a Bears fan that wants to buy your table a round.

It’s always great to mingle and show them that I’m a regular guy. I just play football. That’s my job, 9 to 5.

But outside of that, we’re no different, you and I.”

When Kyle Long posted a picture on social media of himself with a group of teammates and friends at offensive line coach Dave Magazu’s barbecue Saturday, he received some grief for wearing a Cubs hat.

“I was drafted by the sox. I live in the north shore,” Long responded on Twitter. “I’m a Chicagoan.”

Indeed he is. In three seasons with the Bears, the 27-year-old Long has embraced Chicago like an athlete who not only enjoys people and understands sports fans, but is fully aware and appreciative of the opportunity in Chicago. He never will be the mayor of Rush Street – or even Route 60 for that matter – but as professional athletes go, he’s as fan-friendly as they come. “[The night] I got drafted, the minute I hung up the phone with Marc Trestman in 2013, my brother and dad looked at me and they’re like, ‘You lucky dog. You have no idea how lucky you are that you get to play in Chicago,’ ” Long said, “It’s a crown jewel franchise.

“Chicago is such a great market for

the passion and quirkiness of Chicago sports fans. In 2014, he criticized fans for booing the team at Soldier Field during a particularly disheartening loss to the Dolphins, but quickly took it back, explaining that he was caught up in the emotion of the moment.

Long still stands up for himself and responds to fans who good-naturedly, irrationally or erroneously chirp at him on social media, but he understands where they’re coming from.

“When I was drafted by the Bears, it became very clear to me how important the Bears and sports were to this town,” Long said. “Chicago takes it very seriously. They’ll love you through the hard times, and they’ll let you know what you’re doing wrong.

But in good times, they’ll celebrate right there with you.”

Long arguably is “pound-for-pound” the best player on the Bears. He has made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons. He’s a former White Sox draft pick. He’s intelligent, articulate and engaging. He plays video games against real people. So it’s not a surprise he’s as popular – and approachable – as any current Bears player.

He’s like everybody’s best friend.

Starters flirting with ERA record Rotation’s overall ERA falls to 2.30

ATLANTA – When Jon Lester pitched another seven innings Sunday without allowing an earned run, the Cubs’ starting rotation ascended yet another spot.

Doing what no Cubs’ starting staff has done since the dead-ball era, the fiveman rotation has a 2.30 ERA through 61 games that – if it were to hold up – would rank second only to the 1918 World Series team (2.16) in franchise history. And just ahead of the 1919 starting staff (2.31).

“It’s been fun to be a part of,” said Lester, who didn’t walk a batter for the third consecutive start in Sunday’s 13-2 victory over the Braves – and joined teammate Jake Arrieta among only four starters in the majors with ERAs under 2.00.

“Obviously, the pace we’re on is pretty crazy,” said Lester (8-3, 1.89 ERA). “Hopefully, we can just stay even-keeled with it and keep going.”

Crazy?

If they come even close to keeping up this pace, the Cubs’ would have the best rotation ERA in the majors since

the dead-ball era ended in 1920.

The 1981 Astros (2.43 in a strike-shortened season) and the 1968 Cardinals (2.49 the year before the mound was lowered) are the only two teams since then with rotation ERAs under 2.50.

Only three since 1990 had sub-3.00 ERAs: the 2011 Phillies (2.86), 1992 Braves (2.95) and 2015 Cardinals (2.99).

“I think the expectations have been exceeded, but it’s not really all that surprising to us,” said Arrieta, the NL’s reigning Cy Young winner. “We all know that we’re highly capable of pitching at a level like this for an extended period of time.”

“You don’t want to be the guy that screws up, for sure,” said John Lackey (2.63), who ranks fourth on the staff in ERA – and 10th in the National League entering Sunday.

Lackey was the top-rated starter on that Cardinals team that won 100 games last year. He said this one’s similar.

“Maybe a little bit more of a veteran presence on this team, guys with a little more of a track record with Jonny

and myself,” he said, “and [Jason Hammel’s] been around, and Jake’s had a couple great years, obviously. …

“You want to do well. You don’t want to let your boys down.”

Like the Greg Maddux-Tom GlavineJohn Smoltz Braves staffs that used to golf together constantly and talk pitching on the course, this group does the same thing away from the field, Arrieta said.

“Whether we’re on the course or at dinner, or playing guitar in the hotel, there’s normally a baseball-related discussion in there at some point,” Arrieta said. “There’s times where we kind of want to get away from the baseball conversations. But it’s just kind of the way we’re wired.”

Lester said that’s as much a whole team thing as it is just pitchers.

Camaraderie? Competition within the group? Prep work? The catchers?

Certainly, ability.

“I’m sure not a lot of us have answers for what’s going on,” Lester said.

“Enjoy it while we can.”

Wainwright joins Arrieta in HR derby chatter

ATLANTA – What in the name of Carlos Zambrano has Jake Arrieta started?

The day after Arrieta joined the Giants’ Madison Bumgarner in a twoman chorus lobbying for pitchers to be allowed into the All-Star Home Run Derby, Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright piped in Sunday via Twitter: “Well, if Madbum and @JArrieta34 want in on this #homerunderby…I might as well throw my name in the hat!”

The idea was still so intriguing to Arrieta on Sunday morning that the man with the longest home run among pitchers this season proposed a qualifying format for a pitcher, involving a shorter, four-pitcher bracket.

“Get four guys who can really hit the ball a long way, and whoever wins can actually hit in the Derby,” he said.

“Me, Bumgarner and (Noah) Syndergaard in a short derby.”

And maybe Wainwright?

“I’m just spit-balling some things,” said Arrieta, who might actually have one hurdle for his ambition cleared already.

“I made a small bet with him,” Arrieta said. “He still owes me, too.”

And if he had to pitch the next day after a long day of homer practice?

“It’ll get me loose,” he said.

No more ‘scared’ tactics? After walking MVP Bryce Harper 13 times during a four-game sweep of the Nationals last

month – including four intentional walks – the Cubs are expected to pitch to him at least a few times during their upcoming three-game series in Washington.

That’s because .374-hitting Daniel Murphy now is slotted behind Harper in the Nats’ lineup instead of less-imposing Ryan Zimmerman. Nats manager Dusty Baker adjusted his lineup soon after the Cubs’ sweep.

“It’s all about the game situation and about how the other guy decides to construct his lineup,” Maddon said.

“If you want to leave a couple of weak spots open that permit a better option… .

If you feel there’s a better matchup involved, why would you not go for that?”

Harper’s six walks, including three intentional, in that series finale tied a major-league record, and caused a brief stir over the approach, with Nats pitcher Tanner Roark calling it “scared baseball.”

Claimed: The Cubs claimed righthander A.J. Alvarez, a reliever with 28 career big-league appearances (7.39 ERA) for San Diego and Oakland, from the Athletics and optioned him to Double-A Tennessee. Alvarez was on the disabled list until the claim after having bone chips removed from his elbow in April.

CHICAGO – Offensively challenged might be the polite way of describing the struggles the White Sox find themselves mired in.

But that was manager Robin Ventura’s word choice after the Sox managed only five hits for the second straight day in Sunday’s 3-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals at U.S. Cellular Field.

Ventura was quick to give some credit to Royals starter Yordano Ventura, who made the most of his outing while he appeals a nine-game suspension for his part in a brawl against the Baltimore Orioles last week.

But as good as Ventura was in striking out 10 in seven innings, the Sox offense didn’t do much to support its own starter, Carlos Rodon, who gave up two earned runs and struck out seven in six

innings, but got little help.

Besides a Jose Abreu solo home run that got the Sox to within a run in the sixth inning, the Sox were “offensively challenged” in their 22nd loss in 30 games.

“We’ve been challenged (offensively) for a little bit here,” Robin Ventura said. “You’ve got to be able to pick it up. You’ve got to be able to get these [starters] some runs and hold onto it.”

That wasn’t the case Sunday.

The Sox managed only one hit after Abreu’s home run. Besides Alex Avila’s second hit, a seventh-inning single, the Royals’ Ventura and relievers Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis silenced the Sox. Davis struck out Melky Cabrera and Todd Frazier – the Sox’s 11th and 12th strikeouts of the day – to close out the Sox’s latest loss.

Diet can prevent kidney stones Dear Dr. K: I recently passed a kidney stone, and it was really painful. My doctor gave me medicine. Is there anything else I can do to prevent another one?

Dear Reader: Besides the medicine, your diet can influence your risk of getting another kidney stone. Kidney stones are hard chemical deposits that form inside the kidneys. They can be as small as grains of sand and pass painlessly out of the body in urine. But they also can be the size of a pea, a marble or even larger.

If one of those stones gets into the ureters – the tubes that connect each kidney to the bladder – it can cause intense pain and bleeding. This may require medication and/or hospitalization to have the stone removed or broken into fragments.

Kidney stones form if too many minerals are excreted into the urine. Low fluid volume, caused by dehydration, is another cause. Most kidney stones are made of calcium oxalate. This is a combination of calcium and oxalic acid. Stones also may be made of other substances. Your doctor can have your stone analyzed to see what it was made of.

People who have already had a kidney stone have a high risk of forming another one. Your doctor should tailor your dietary recommendations based on what your kidney stone is made of. These are the dietary changes that often are recommended: – Drink plenty of fluids to keep your urine dilute, so minerals won’t accumulate into stones. Drink at least 10 glasses of fluid a day, half of which should be water.

– It may seem paradoxical, but eating calcium-rich foods actually reduces your risk of stones. That’s because absorbing lots of calcium in your gut reduces how

Good sources of calcium include milk, cheese, yogurt, oranges and broccoli. On the other hand, calcium pills can raise your risk for kidney stones because they increase the calcium in your blood and urine without decreasing oxalic acid. So avoid calcium pills.

• Don’t eat too much of foods that are rich in oxalic acid. These include beets, spinach, chard, rhubarb, tea, coffee, cola, chocolate and nuts.

• Keep your sodium intake under 1,500 mg a day. A low-sodium diet reduces the amount of calcium the kidney puts into the urine.

• Avoid or limit red meat. Animal protein increases the tendency of stones to form in the urine.

• Most plant-based foods protect against kidney stones. High-potassium fruits such as tomatoes and bananas are best. Citrus fruits – except grapefruit – are another good choice.

• Obesity increases the risk of stones, so try to shed excess pounds through a combination of fewer calories and regular exercise.

No one who has suffered the pain of a first kidney stone wants to experience a second stone. Fortunately, you can do a lot to reduce your risk.
