SpaceX’s fourth recovered rocket arrives leaning on barge

The Associated Press CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Call it the Leaning Tower of SpaceX. SpaceX’s fourth recovered rocket returned to shore Thursday, leaning to one side but still standing tall on its ocean-landing platform.

The first-stage booster pushed the limits during the landing last Friday. Its speed was close to the design maximum for the rocket and the support system for its legs.

Although the 15-story rocket was in danger of tipping over, it remained upright as it pulled into Port Canaveral, smudged black in places. Friday’s touchdown followed the rocket’s launch of a satellite.

SpaceX is working to recycle its rockets; the first one may again fly in two to three months.

Chief executive Elon Musk said the booster represents 70 percent of the cost of a Falcon rocket, on the order of $30 million to $35 million. So it makes sense, he said, to reuse the pieces. In fact, he said at Code Conference 2016 in Southern California on Wednesday, it’s

“tragic” to discard them in the ocean, as has been the case throughout history.

Musk said he tells his team, “Imagine there was a pallet of cash that was plummeting through the atmosphere, and it was going to burn up and smash into tiny pieces. Would you try to save it? Probably yes. Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.

“So we want to get it back, and that way we don’t have to make another one. I think it’s quite tragic if rockets, like, get smashed into tiny pieces.”

The Hawthorne, California-based SpaceX is the first and only rocket-maker to land boosters used in orbital missions. Blue Origin’s touchdowns in Texas have occurred after suborbital flights.

SpaceX’s first successful landing occurred in December at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Three sea landings have followed off Florida’s east coast, first in April, then two more in May. The stages look “quite good,” according to Musk. For the landing, the rocket flips around, uses its engines to slow down and sets down on pop-out legs.

Camp Power kickoff event gives families preview of summer

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Marquita Porter said she’s known about Camp Power for years, but she was more excited at the program’s summer 2016 kickoff event Thursday knowing that her own daughter will be among the youngsters who will attend.

Porter, 28, and her 6-year-old, Zanavia Williams, plan to go swimsuit shopping and make other preparations to get ready for the June 20 start of the popular youth summer camp program.

It will again be held free of charge right in the University Village housing community – where they and the other participants live.

“I hope that she makes good friends, meets good people and [learns] how to be more active – instead of just sitting around watching TV all day,” Porter said.

Camp Power organizers and stakeholders, including members of the Kishwaukee YMCA and the DeKalb Police Department, attended the kickoff event held in a University Village park where families got a peek at what’s planned for the summer.

“It’s very exciting to see that it’s becoming sustainable and that people are still interested in it,” said Mary Hess, a Camp Power founder and member of the DeKalb School District 428 Board.

“I’m looking forward to them [the children] having more experiences, because the YMCA is involved.”

Although the camp started in 2014, this year marks the first one where the Kishwaukee YMCA takes over running it. The nonprofit community center hired the camp counselors, recruited and registered participants and developed the programming, which includes using the University Village pool to provide the kids swimming lessons.

“Parents just want something fun for their kids to do, where they’re being productive over the summer months and experiencing new things,” Lesley Feyerherm said. She is head of youth development for the Kishwaukee YMCA. She said a typical day during the eight-week program starts with literacy activities provided by the North-

Lunch will be served daily before the kids close out the day with structured activities. On Wednesdays, she said, there will be field trips.

“It’s really about connecting the people in this neighborhood to the greater community,” Feyerherm said.

The program also will run in the Pleasant Street neighborhood.

Camp Power was founded as an outlet for youth in the mostly low-income, 534-unit housing community. Organizers say it was designed to address child hunger, quell youth violence in the area and engage youth with community stakeholders in an effort to foster positive relationships with such groups as the DeKalb police.

Community involvement with Camp Power has been the key to its success, according to organizers. This year, the literacy classes will be held at a local church. The nonprofit Voluntary Action Center will be preparing and providing the meals. YMCA aquatic staff secured a grant for the Y staff to offer the swim lessons, and the city of DeKalb offered some grant funding, among other partnerships.

paign she started will continue through the summer.

“This program touches so many different lives, in so many different ways,” said DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery, who attended the kickoff event along with several other police officers.

One goal of Camp Power is to foster trust between the police department and University Village residents. The housing community and its immediate

surrounding area are noted for their high volume of calls for police service.

“For the police, it’s so important for us to see people as people and not just as another police call,” Lowery said.

“We have to bridge those relationship gaps and those communication gaps, and this is one of the ways to do it.

“If you can’t get into helping a bunch of kids, you can’t get into nothing,” he said.

New season for farmers market Vendors new and old open at DeKalb event

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The farmers market returned to Van Buer Plaza for its 21st year Thursday with more than two dozen vendors and shoppers from around the area.

The DeKalb Farmers’ Market will feature more than 30 vendors offering locally grown produce, gourmet meats, bread, baked goods, cheese, pet treats, flowers and more from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Thursday from June to September.

Camden Luther, 24, of Sycamore stopped by Thursday to buy mangoes and Chinese gooseberries from Windy Acres Farm and a bottle of wine from Waterman Winery and Vineyards.

“You got to support your local businesses,” Luther said. “DeKalb needs more stuff like this.”

Damian Obando, 26, of DeKalb said the market made it easy to get fresh fruit and produce.

“They take [food stamps], which is great,” he added.

Vendors such as Windy Acres Farm in Geneva have been selling food and other goods at the DeKalb Farmers’ Market since it started 21 years ago.

“We’ve been here since Day 1,” said Amanda Srail, one of the owners of Windy Acres Farm, while showing customers strawberries that had been picked the night before.

Theis Farm Market in Maple Park also has been bringing locally grown fruit and vegetables to DeKalb since the market started.

“We have a lot of regulars who have been coming to us since the beginning,” Stevi Pondelick of Theis Farm Market said.

The locavore movement has helped bring in a younger generation of shoppers.

“We’re seeing a lot of younger faces, which gives us hope for longevity,” Pondelick said.

Clem Stiely, one of the owners of Waterman Winery and Vineyards, said the market serves as an outlet for the winery’s products, as well as a marketing tool to display the vintner’s offerings in Waterman.

“A lot of this is to get the word out,” Stiely said. “We want to get people to go to the winery, taste the grapes from vine and sample our 20 different wines.”

Jessica Antonacci, events manager at the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, called the first market of the season a success.

“It was a great first day – and the weather cooperated,” she said. “We have some new vendors and some returning vendors, which brought out a good crowd.”

New vendors this season include Shady Tree Farm Market, Hoppers Poppers and White Gate Farms. New Harvest Food Truck is another new vendor this year. The DeKalb-based food truck has been a staple at Northern Illinois University.

Once school is out for summer, Antonacci said she expects to see even more people shopping in Van Buer Plaza.

Born Jan. 15, 1947, in DeKalb, the son of Raymond and Phyllis (Gonterman) Wickness , Richard married Cynthia Meisch on NovemALBERT J. TIEKEN ber 7, 1976.

Richard was a member of the DeKalb Elks agriculture at Lee Center, Amboy, and Lodge 765 for 42 years.

SYCAMORE – The first distribution of property tax collections has been made to local governments, DeKalb County Treasurer Christine Johnson said.

According to a news release from Johnson’s office, the county has distributed $21.9 million of the $213.3 million in total property tax revenue it will distribute this year, or 10.3 percent of the total. Johnson said her office was ahead of schedule in doling out the payments that fund operations of local government units including schools, municipalities, libraries, park districts, fire protection districts and others.

Sycamore event supports breast cancer research

katiesmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – When all the signs seemed to tell Florence Mathison she would never be cancer-free again, she rolled up the sleeves of her pink athletic shirt and said flatly, “I can. I will.

Watch me.”

Today, Mathison has been a breast cancer survivor for 28 years, and Thursday marked the 12th anniversary of a fundraiser started in her honor, Ladies Night Out. More than 80 vendors lined the sidewalks Thursday as locals in pink tank tops and carefully bedazzled rhinestone visors bobbed up and down State Street.

“It’s a night to come together for women to celebrate and honor each other,” the night’s coordinator, Dawn Sukach, said.

The evening’s proceeds will be distributed as donations among cancer center and hospice programs through the KishHealth System Foundation and the YMCA Livestrong program. Sukach hopes to beat last year’s total of just more than $17,000 by raising enough to donate $20,000 to cancer research, she said.

Breast cancer, the second most common cancer in women and men worldwide, affects not only the person diagnosed, but also their family, friends and caregivers, Sukach said.

“Some people come down and say ‘thank you for doing this.’ Some people come down and it makes them feel closer to the person they lost,” Sukach said. “They come down, and it’s just something that helps lift them up and

give them joy to be around other people who understand what they’re going through. That’s the whole purpose in a nutshell right there.”

Sukach and her family understand, particularly her mother, Mathison, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987.

“It kind of runs in our family, and I was very proactive in what I did because I saw what my sisters went through ... “ Mathison said. “When I found out that I had breast cancer, I was like, ‘I’m not doing that.’ So I just opted to have a double mastectomy, and I believe that saved my life.”

Six months later, doctors found and removed another tumor, and after seven years Mathison found herself being treated for melanoma.

“I’ve been clear and free ever since,” she said.

The attitude that got her through each round of cancer was the same one printed on the shirts for sale outside D&D Jewelers Thursday: “I can. I will.

Watch me.”

“We’re encouraging people now to not only go get checked and be proactive with your body, but hopefully there’s a cure,” she said. “Or with this money we can do some research and learn there is a cure.”

Friends Trish Diedrich and Dorothy Hitzeroth wore their brightest pink garments to Thursday’s fundraiser.

“It’s the hometown charm,” Diedrich said. “You come to support this wonderful event and a lot of us are affected by this – friends, family, mothers, sisters.

It’s really a great event. It’s a tradition now, I think.”

Autopsy: Prince died of fentanyl OD

MINNEAPOLIS – Prince died of an overdose of fentanyl, a powerful opioid painkiller that is up to 50 times more potent than heroin, autopsy results released Thursday show.

The findings confirm suspicions that opioids played a role in the death of the superstar musician, who was found dead April 21 at his Minneapolis-area estate.

It was not immediately clear whether Prince had a prescription for the drug and, if not, how he obtained it.

At least one friend has said he suffered from intense knee and hip pain from many years of stage performances.

The results raised the possibility that anyone who provided the drug illegally could face criminal charges.

Although the death was formally ruled an accident, that merely signified that it was not intentional and in no way precludes prosecution.

After Prince died, authorities began reviewing whether an overdose was to blame and whether he had been prescribed drugs in the preceding weeks.

According to a one-page report released by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, Prince administered the drug himself on an unknown date. The office said the death investigation is

CHICAGO – A special prosecutor will handle the case of a white Chicago police officer who shot a black teenager 16 times, a judge said Thursday, while civil rights attorneys pressed for a broader investigation into whether other officers at the scene attempted a cover-up.

NEW YORK – United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz knows his airline has alienated some of its most loyal fliers.

His effort to win them back starts with a new business class product that he personally unveiled Thursday at his first major public appearance since becoming CEO. Business travelers, who may pay $5,000 for a trans-Atlantic flight, want seats that are comfortable to work, eat and sleep in. They want direct access to the aisle, particularly on overnight flights where nobody wants to have to crawl over a sleeping passenger to use the bathroom. SPRINGFIELD – A Democratic state lawmaker wants Democratic Illinois Auditor General Frank Mautino to take a leave of absence after learning federal officials questioned him about campaign expenses.

In a letter sent Wednesday, state Sen. Laura Murphy of Des Plaines asks Mautino to step aside until the investigation is complete. Murphy said a leave is in the best interest of state government and taxpayers.

LOS ANGELES – A former UCLA graduate student killed a woman in Minnesota before carrying two semi-automatic pistols and a grudge back to Los Angeles, where he fatally shot a young professor he once called a mentor and then killed himself, police said Thursday.

The two victims were on a “kill list” that Mainak Sarkar had composed – as was a second professor authorities believe the gunman intended to kill but could not find Wednesday on the bustling campus, police Chief Charlie Beck said.

Authorities did not publicly identify the unharmed professor or the woman. A law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press the woman on the Ashley Hasti list was Ashley Hasti, who documents show married the gunman in 2011.

Authorities pieced together the case as most classes resumed a day after thousands of students and staff members were locked down on the sprawling grounds of UCLA. Its normally tranquil paths and hallways were swarmed by a small army of officers clad in body armor and wielding high-powered rifles.

Records in Hennepin County, Minnesota, show Hasti married Sarkar in 2011, though more recently they had different residences and their current relationship was unclear.

In pursuit of GOP unity, speaker endorses Trump The ASSOCIATED PRESS JANESVILLE, Wis. — House Speaker Paul Ryan endorsed Donald Trump’s bid for president on Thursday, bringing an end to the extraordinary public split between the GOP’s presumptive White House nominee and the nation’s top Republican in office.

“I had friends wishing I wouldn’t support Paul Ryan him. I had friends wishing I would,” Ryan said in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press. “I really didn’t feel any pressure, other than my goal is to make sure that were unified so that we’re at full strength in the fall so we can win the election.”

Ryan’s announcement, made in a newspaper column published in his Wisconsin hometown, marks a significant step for a Republican Party trying to come together ahead of a general election matchup against likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

And Ryan made clear he had Clinton on his mind when he decided to join the ranks of Republicans who have slowly come around to backing Trump, the brash billionaire few expected to emerge as the party’s nominee when the campaign began in earnest last year.

“This to me is about saving the country and preventing a third progressive, liberal term, which is what a Clinton presidency would do,” Ryan said.

Trump celebrated the endorsement on his favorite venue, Twitter.

“So great to have the endorsement and support of Paul Ryan,” Trump wrote. “We will both be working very hard to Make America Great Again!”

There are still some GOP leaders who say they won’t support Trump, including 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who tapped Ryan as his running mate four years ago.

A day earlier, Romney signaled that he’d support a possible third-party candidate instead of the presumptive Republican nominee.

Tourists in Africa get close, but not too close, to gorillas

JOHANNESBURG – In some parts of Africa, tourists and researchers routinely trek into the undergrowth to see gorillas in their natural habitat. There are no barriers and no enclosures, and the apes, many of whom are accustomed to people, sometimes move past first-time visitors frozen in place, their awe mingling with apprehension.

This delicate interaction usually happens without incident, overseen by guides who brief trekkers on rules designed as much to protect infection-prone gorillas from humans as to shield humans from hulking wild animals. It’s a very different situation to the tense, rapidly unfolding events on May 28 at the Cincinnati Zoo, where an animal response team shot and killed an endangered adult male gorilla named Harambe after a 3-year-old boy fell into an enclosure.

Researchers today, Breuer said, don’t practice the up-close methods of Dian Fossey, the American primatologist who won the confidence of gorillas by imitating their noises, moving on her knuckles and chewing on vegetation. Fossey, who brought international attention to the endangered primates’ plight and whose book, “Gorillas in the Mist,” inspired a movie starring Sigourney Weaver, was murdered at her Rwandan research camp in 1985.

In Rwanda, guides who lead tourists to see habituated gorillas ask them to stay at least 23 feet away from the animals. They also say: Don’t point, speak softly, don’t cough or sneeze in the animals’ direction and if a gorilla approaches, crouch down, don’t make eye contact and make a low sound similar to that of clearing the throat,

which gorillas use to express friendliness.

Tourists must be over 15 years old to be eligible for gorilla-trekking, according to Rwandan park officials.

The Cincinnati scenario was unpredictable. The zoo said it made a hard decision to kill the gorilla to ensure the child’s safety. Video shows Harambe swiftly dragging the boy through the moat water, and also pausing and touching the child in a way that some people viewed as protective. Alarmed calls of onlookers can be heard.

The Jane Goodall Institute released an email sent by the primatologist and conservationist to Thane Maynard, the director of the Cincinnati Zoo, expressing empathy with him over what she called the “devastating loss” of the gorilla.

Goodall wrote that she feels sorry for Maynard having to defend a shooting that he “may disapprove of” and that it looked like the gorilla was putting an arm around the child.

SAN DIEGO – Previewing a rancorous fall campaign, Hillary Clinton assailed Donald Trump on Thursday as a potential president who would lead America toward war and economic crisis. She portrayed her own foreign policy as optimistic, inclusive and diplomatic, born from long experience in public life.

There was nothing diplomatic in her remarks, a clear indication of how she’ll take on Trump. Electing him, she said, would be “a historic mistake.”

During a speech in San Diego that was billed as a foreign policy address, the Democratic former secretary of state unloaded on her likely Republican election opponent, counting down reasons he is not qualified – from his aggressive Twitter attacks to his emotional outbursts.

“He is not just unprepared; he is temperamentally unfit,” she told supporters in a ballroom. “We cannot let him roll the dice with America.”

She said a Trump presidency could spark nuclear conflicts overseas and ignite economic catastrophe at home.

“There’s no risk of people losing their lives if you blow up a golf course deal, but it doesn’t work like that in world affairs,” Clinton said of the celebrity businessman. “The stakes in global statecraft are infinitely higher

She hit Trump for his reality TV past, for his snarky Twitter feed, for his hotel experience.

She ran down a list of people he has insulted, including the pope.

“He has the gall to say prisoners of war like John McCain aren’t heroes,” Clinton said. “He says he has foreign policy experience because he ran the Miss Universe pageant.”

Emphasizing her experience as first lady, senator and secretary of state, Clinton said she recognizes what it means to deploy American troops and would provide the steady diplomacy the country needs.

Clinton and Trump offer starkly different visions of U.S. foreign policy.

Her proposals reflect the traditional approach of both major parties. Despite differences on some issues, such as the Iraq war and Iran, Democratic and Republican presidents have been generally consistent on policies affecting China, Russia, North Korea, nuclear proliferation, trade, alliances and many other issues.

All or nothing for budget this summer Top state Republicans, including Gov. Bruce Rauner, on Thursday held a news conference at which they called for Democrats to pass a pair of stopgap budget bills – one designed to fund public schools, another to fund higher education, human services and core government operations through January.

Rauner and other Republicans say we need these bills “so the people of Illinois can get what they need from us.” They say that core state services should not be “held hostage” by this ongoing budget standoff.

Likewise, local school officials also hope to receive state funding this year in time for the start of the next school year.

But simply getting money to schools so they can open on time isn’t all the people need from their state government.

What we need is for lawmakers to move beyond this budget standoff so that we can begin addressing the other pressing issues confronting our state’s government.

For going on a year, there hasn’t been sufficient public pressure. Families of schoolchildren around the state just might need to be inconvenienced by Illinois’ budget crisis in a way that affects their day-to-day lives if there is to be an end to this standoff.

Otherwise, it is too easy for most of us to forget about the damage being done to our state.

In discussions on the floor at the state House of Representatives on Saturday, lawmakers from the two parties often seemed to just talk past each other – when they weren’t attacking one another.

Republican Rep. Bob Pritchard of Hinckley pointed out that things are falling apart and there has to be compromise, and minutes later, Democratic Rep. Mary Flowers (in the Legislature since 1985, probably not a fan of term limits) got up and said negotiating doesn’t mean closing day care centers on babies and that Republicans are simply protecting corporations in Illinois.

Note to Rep. Flowers – Illinois is tied for the highest unemployment rate in the country, and joblessness has grown three months in a row. Corporations don’t really like us all that much these days.

But the unemployment rate isn’t enough to force a deal.

When seniors, women and children who depend on state government-funded agencies for help lost access to services, it wasn’t enough.

When our state’s public universities were weakened to the point of closing their doors – and then offered a pittance in state aid as a “stopgap” – it wasn’t enough.

When the state’s backlog of unpaid bills once again approached $7 billion, and was projected to reach $10 billion by the end of June, that wasn’t enough.

But if hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren are sitting home sending Snapchats to each other by mid-September, something will have to happen.

In fact, just the thought of this happening might be enough to force a compromise. People suddenly would be acutely aware just how much the state government has failed everyone it is supposed to serve over the past year.

So this summer, no stopgaps. No partial funding bills.

Make it all or nothing.

But then, it all came tumbling down.

Because of a law passed in 2011, Lisa’s teenage crime denied her the chance to apply for the state license she needed to become a registered nurse.

“To be told, after all we’ve been through, that I wasn’t good enough … it was devastating,” she said.

But she didn’t give up. Instead, she began fighting for Senate Bill 42, which would allow ex-offenders such as herself to apply for a license to work in the health care field after a post-conviction waiting period.

After an ex-offender’s application is received, the state licensing board still would consider a number of factors in granting the license, such as the seriousness of the offense, overall criminal history, whether restitution was made to a victim and signs of rehabilitation.

But Lisa has bona fides in spades.

trips to Springfield. She’s proud of the example Lisa sets for others, showing it’s possible to break a cycle of crime and dependency with a positive attitude and a giving spirit.

Lt. Shane Brandel of the Decatur Police Department is proud of Lisa’s tenacity. The two have been close since Brandel investigated the death of Lisa’s fiancé.

“I applaud her for her efforts,” he said. “Most people would just give up.”

Unfortunately, hopelessness is a major byproduct of Illinois’ criminal justice system.

Of the 30,000 people who leave Illinois prisons each year, nearly half return within three years. Studies show as many as 60 percent to 75 percent of former offenders are unemployed a year after their release.

Thankfully, Lisa has been able to work as a nursing assistant for more than a decade. A job can make all the difference between a life of freedom and a life of crime.

Illinois ex-offenders who are employed a year after release have a recidivism rate as low as 16 percent, according to research from the Safer Foundation. It’s concerning, then, that

Illinois has at least 118 professional and business licenses applicants who can or must be denied because of their criminal history.

That’s why reforms such as SB 42 are so important. That’s why instead of leaving the state for greener pastures, Lisa stood and fought for more than just herself.

“This isn’t just me,” Lisa said.

“There are all types of productive careers that ex-offenders are prevented from pursuing. It’s time we stop beating the same drum. It’s not working, and the music is not pretty.”

It’s been more than a year since SB 42 passed out of the Illinois Senate.

On May 26, it passed the House. And as of Wednesday, the only hurdle that remains is the governor’s signature.

To Lisa and Illinoisans like her, it’s more than a bill.

In a state that’s short on opportunities, it’s reason to hope.

Attacks on press part of Trump’s whining strategy The day before the March presidential primary in Ohio, one of my journalism students at Kent State told me she was going to cover Donald Trump’s rally that evening in Youngstown.

She was excited.

I was immediately concerned.

Trump had already established a habit of working up crowds of supporters by mocking the journalists among them. Sounding like the mother hen I have repeatedly insisted to my students I am not, I rattled off a list of precautions to ensure my student’s safety.

“Don’t stand alone,” I told her. “Stay around other journalists. Introduce yourself to a bunch of them. If someone in the crowd starts to shove or otherwise manhandle you, yell for help.

Make sure your credentials are visible so that other journalists know to look out for you.”

She nodded, her eyes wide.

Driving home from the campus that day, I couldn’t stop thinking about our exchange. I didn’t relax until later that night, when I read her story online and knew that she was safe.

Earlier this week, he initiated yet another attack on journalists, this time for having the audacity to report that he had failed to make good on a promise in January to donate $1 million to a veterans charity. Insisting that the donation had now been made, he resorted to calling one male reporter “a sleaze” and said to another, “I’ve seen you on TV. You’re a real beauty.”

More from the presumptive Republican nominee for president of the U.S.: “I sent people checks of a lot of money. ... And instead of being like ‘Thank you very much, Mr. Trump’ or ‘Trump did a good job,’ everyone’s saying, ‘Who got it, who got it, who got it?’ And you make me look very bad. I have never received such bad publicity for doing such a good job.”

pesky AP reporters: “The Associated Press spoke or left messages with each of the organizations Trump named. Of the 30 groups that responded by Tuesday, about half said they had received checks from Trump just last week.

“Several said the checks were dated on or about May 24 and shipped out overnight – the same date as a Trump interview with The Washington Post, which for weeks had been pressing his campaign to disclose the recipients of the millions raised during the splashy telethon-style fundraiser in Iowa.”

Trump, however, insisted on continuing to cast himself as a victim.

“I’ve been dealing with the press a long time,” he whined Tuesday. “I think the political press is among the most dishonest people that I’ve ever met. I have to tell you that, OK? ... I’m going to continue to attack the press.

Look, I find the press to be extremely dishonest. I find the political press to be unbelievably dishonest. I will say that. OK, thank you all very much.

Thank you.”

In response, Ari Fleischer, a press secretary during the George W. Bush administration, tweeted these words of wisdom:

“My advice to the press: Stop interviewing yourselves about Trump’s attack on the press. Don’t worry about it. Just do your jobs and be fair.”

Aw, so Fleischer does love us – not one bit.

Complaining about the media has long been a hobby of many politicos.

With Trump, however, it’s becoming something far more sinister – and potentially dangerous.

It’s easy to get cynical about Illinois politics.

Frustration is the norm in Springfield. Optimism is an emotional liability.

But Lisa Creason doesn’t play by those rules. When it comes to politics in the Land of Lincoln, the single mom from Decatur just pulled off the biggest underdog story of 2016. She drove to Springfield nearly every day of legislative session for two years to fight for her family.

And she won.

Lisa’s story is one of redemption, starting with a crime she committed more than 20 years ago.

She stole money from a Subway cash register when she was 19 to buy food for her newborn daughter. She spent one year in prison.

A stray bullet killed her fiancé in 2002. She raised three kids on her own, started an anti-violence nonprofit and went to nursing school.

Richard Ohlinger receives 2016 Roberts Award

Clausen, a graduate of Sycamore High School, is the son of Jeffrey and Anna Clausen. He has been active in FFA, math team and National Honor Society.

1st Farm Credit Services reClausen cently announced the 24 recipients of the $1,500 scholarship, which supports students who are pursuing a higher education in an agriculture field or a degree that will contribute to the quality of rural life.

Recipients were selected Ethan Plote from a pool of more than 145 applicants based on their future commitment to rural America, academic achievement, community activities and agriculture involvement.

An independent panel of leaders in farming, agribusiness, youth and education selected the scholarship recipients.

In the fall, Clausen plans to attend Kishwaukee College and then transfer to a fouryear university to study animal science. He hopes to obtain a doctorate degree and become an animal nutritionist.

Plote plans to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to study agricultural and consumer economics – farm management. He hopes to work for an agricultural equipment or other agricultural company and eventually become manager of his family farm.

A banquet and formal presentation of the scholarships will be hosted in July by 1st Farm Credit Services for the students and their parents.

Kishwaukee College named Richard Ohlinger of Rochelle as the recipient of the 2016 John C. Roberts Community Service Award. The award was established in 2009 to recognize the importance of community members in the success of the college.

DeKalb High School grad riding cross country to help raise money for students with autism DAILY CHRONICLE DeKalb native Drew Feltes is taking on a 3,838-mile Cross Country Bike Challenge this summer. He’ll cover 13 states in 52 days.

Feltes, a 2003 DeKalb High School graduate, is raising money for The Academy for Precision Learning in Seattle. He has been employed at APL as a paraprofessional teacher working with children on the autism spectrum since 2012.

Drew Feltes Last summer, Feltes completed the STP (Seattle to Portland) bike ride

raising $3,300 for the school. The STP was a bike ride of more than 200 miles with an elevation gain of more than 5,000 feet. Feltes completed this ride in 11 hours, 25 minutes.

On Sunday, Feltes will leave from San Francisco.

He is traveling with America by Bicycle Inc. and will arrive in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on July 26. His fundraising goal this time is $15,000.

Class project involved raising awareness of nursing as a career DAILY CHRONICLE

The Kishwaukee College Nursing Program hosted an induction ceremony for the Alpha Delta Nu Nursing Honor Society on May 18. Seven second-year nursing students were inducted as new members of ADN. Patricia Mitchell and June Callahan are the faculty advisers to the Kishwaukee College chapter.

ADN is the official honor society of the National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing.

To be eligible for admission to ADN, nursing students must have completed two semesters of nursing program coursework with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, have a minimum 87 percent (B) average in all nursing courses and complete a leadership project. The Spring 2016 induction class’ leadership project was outreach in the local high schools to raise awareness of nursing as a career

and the nursing program at Kishwaukee College.

The induction ceremony included welcoming remarks by Bette Chilton, dean of Health and Education and director of Nursing at Kishwaukee College. Representing the new inductees was student speaker and ADN President Jackie Koenig.

The inductees received their ADN cords and pins from each other to signify their interconnectedness as they complete their educational journey as nursing students.

The ADN members wore their honor cords and pins as part of their graduation regalia at the college commencement ceremony.

BRIEF Fly-in breakfast scheduled for Sunday in DeKalb

The DeKalb EAA Chapter 241 will hold its annual Fly-in, Drive-in Pancake and Eggs Breakfast at the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Cost for the breakfast is $7 for adults and $4 for children age 12 and younger.

The chapter uses proceeds from the breakfasts to fund a yearly scholarship for flight training, which is awarded at the DeKalb breakfast. This year, the award will be presented to Ian Curtis.

Kish College Nursing hosts Honor Society induction

Jackie Marco was selected as the State FFA Proficiency Winner in diversified horticulture. Marco is a member of the Somonauk-Leland-Sandwich FFA Chapter of the Illinois Association FFA. Illinois FFA recognizes students in 52 different areas based on their work-based learning, also known as Supervised Agriculture Experiences or SAE. FFA members who demonstrate outstanding agricultural skills and competencies through record keeping, leadership and scholastic achievement may be considered for this award.

SAEs allow students to learn by doing by either owning and operating an agricultural business, working or serving an internship at an agriculture-based business or conducting an agriculture-based scientific experiment and reporting results.

Marco was selected as the state winner by a committee of agriculture industry representatives and teachers knowledgeable in this work-based area.

Receiving this honor now makes her eligible for the national FFA competition. Marco was previously chosen as the chapter, section and district award winner in this area.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – In a tournament this year, the Sycamore girls soccer team gave up an early goal to Lemont but rallied to win.

That happened March 24. That also was the last time the Spartans have trailed in a game.

Sycamore heads to Naperville today for the Class 2A state semifinals, facing Rochester at 1 p.m. at North Central College.

“We have a somewhat younger team, but on the other hand, several players played in several games in their club seasons, so I would assume they’ve had pressure games before,” Spartans coach Dave Lichamer said.

“But we are a younger team, so, hopefully, we can direct that excitement into a nice, quality performance and not let nerves get to us.”

The Spartans (23-2-1) will face the Rockets (23-2-1), a team that has outscored its opponents 21-3 in the postseason and won the Class 1A state championship last year.

Lichamer said although playing from behind is an unfamiliar position for the Spartans, he’s confident in his team’s quick-strike ability to equalize the score if necessary. In the DeKalb Supersectional against Geneseo, the Spartans scored twice in 21 seconds to take command of a game that was tied at 1.

“Certainly if it’s early in the game, I think we’ll be OK,” Lichamer said. “We have enough offensive push that we’re

The defense has been an anchor for the Spartans all year, with senior Amanda Cook in goal and senior Anna Haub a vocal leader in the back. Sycamore has given up the second fewest goals among the four teams remaining in the postseason – St. Francis, which will play Deerfield in the other semifinal at 11 a.m. today, has outscored its opponents, 34-0.

The Spartans will be facing a team with two threats of its own up top.

BELVIDERE – With two outs, a runner in scoring position and a run already in, Jenna Levine and the DeKalb softball team weren’t content to rest.

Levine followed Skylar Haring’s RBI single in the first inning with one of her own as the Barbs went on to beat Crystal Lake Central, 3-1, in a Class 4A Belvidere North Sectional semifinal Thursday.

The Barbs (24-6) will take on Barrington (28-7) in the final at 3 p.m. Saturday, with the winner advancing to the final eight and the Barrington Supersectional on Monday.

“It was so important,” Levine said.

“You have to do your job, do it for the team. Without that second run, we wouldn’t have had as much as a lead, and we would not (have) had as much pressure on Crystal Lake Central.”

Erin Karasewski reached on an error with one out in the first when Central third baseman Claire Urbanski misplayed a short popup. With two outs and Karasewski on third, Mallory Warner walked, then Haring singled to left. Levine followed with a single to right, scoring Warner for the early 2-0 lead.

“It’s a real big hit,” DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said. “Jenna’s been hot lately. She’s been hitting everything.

We don’t want to move anybody in the lineup at this point. We feel pretty comfortable with everybody where we’re at, so we’re going to leave it as is.

But Jen has really stepped it up. She’s come through with some big, big hits to keep innings going and drive in big runs.”

The Tigers (16-18) broke through in the bottom of the third against DeKalb starter Morgan Newport, with three hits in the inning – capped when Kelly Iwanoto singled home Amy Walsh with two outs. But Newport picked up her fifth of 12 strikeouts in the game to escape the jam.

The Tigers got runners to second in the fifth and sixth innings, plus brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Newport found her way out of the jams, striking out six batters in the last three innings. She allowed eight hits and one earned run in the game, and walked none.

Barrington coach Brian Strombom said his team couldn’t get the big hit against Newport.

“I was happy with what our pitch-

ers did and what the defense was like,” Strombom said. “Newport is pretty good. When she gets in a groove, as we learned, you have to have your best swings. And we had several good swings, we got on base occasionally. But we needed more baserunners and bigger hits, and it just didn’t happen as often as we needed.”

DeKalb added an insurance run in the sixth when Karasewski tripled to start the inning, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Newport.

The win sets up a meeting with Barrington, which has reached the supersectional every year since IHSA softball split into four classes in 2008 – including a fourth-place finish in 2015 and a third-place finish in 2013.

In 2014, the Barbs lost, 6-4, in a sectional final to the Broncos.

“They are rich in tradition,” Davis said. “They host the supersectional, so if you want to make it downstate, you have to go through them on their field.

They’re a good ballclub, they play the game extremely well, they’re coached extremely well. We lost to them a couple years ago in a sectional game.

Hopefully, we can redeem ourselves come Saturday.”

Levine said she’s optimistic heading into the sectional final.

“We’re hyped, we’re really pumped for it,” Levine said. “We just really want to stay focused and tough throughout the entire thing.

We know they are a good team and a good program, but I think we can beat them.”

Sycamore rallies for semifinal win

treynolds@shawmedia.com ROCHELLE – Trailing by four runs after the first inning of a sectional semifinal is usually cause for great concern – especially when your starting pitcher is struggling to find the strike zone.

But even if the Sycamore baseball team was a bit flustered early on Thursday against Rock Falls, it sure didn’t show.

The Spartans scored in every inning except the second, and chipped away at the early deficit to stun the Rockets with a 10-7, comeback victory in a Class 3A Rochelle Sectional semifinal at Creason Athletic Complex.

“We weren’t going to fold or lay down once we got behind,” Sycamore junior James Marcinowski said. “We just stuck with it, had good at-bats, everybody contributed and we never let up.”

Trailing 5-1 after starter Jack Mizgalski struggled with his control in the first inning – he walked three, hit two batters, allowed two RBI hits and balked in a run – Sycamore (24-11) bounced back.

Mizgalski settled down and started throwing strikes and getting outs, and the offense picked up on his cue.

Michael Beaudoin, who singled in Zach Carlsen in the first inning, hit a sacrifice fly to score Jordan Wright in the third, then Marcinowski beat out a double-play grounder to drive in Carlsen and make it 5-3.

After Rock Falls (30-5) tacked on a run in the bottom of the third, Jason Wittenberg smoked a solo home run to left-center field to get back to within 6-4.

Beaudoin then singled with two outs in the fourth, then Marcinowski ripped a double to deep right field. It looked like the hit would be tracked down for the third out, but Rockets right fielder Reid Akerman collided with the fence just as the ball hit his glove, and courtesy runner Zach Dugger chugged all the way around from first. Marcinowski tied the score by scampering home when the throw to try to cut him down

“I took a 1-0 fastball in that at-bat that I should have hit, so I just wanted to put a good swing on the next strike he threw me,” Marcinowski said. “I thought it was going to be a flyout, because their right fielder got a great jump on it and tracked it down, but then I saw it on the ground and just kept going. After I slid

into third, Coach told me to get up and run home, so I just took off.”

Another two-out rally put the Spartans ahead. Pinch hitter Tyler Didio bunted his way on when Rock Falls third baseman Quinton Matznick couldn’t make a barehanded play, then went to second when Wright singled right back up the middle. Carlsen followed with an RBI single to left for the lead, then Wright scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-6.

An RBI groundout brought Rock Falls within 8-7 after six innings, but Tyler Maveus – who had struck out in each of his previous three at-bats – supplied insurance runs with a one-out, two-run homer to right-center in the top of the seventh. Beaudoin then struck out the side on 14 pitches in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory.

“We told the kids that the game is never decided in the first inning or

the last inning, but over the course of the whole game,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said. “We told them to shake off that first inning and let it go, and they settled in and chipped away.

It felt like that first home run was a turning point, and the guys just kept it going from there.”

Sycamore out-hit Rock Falls, 12-6, and stranded only four baserunners to the Rockets’ nine. After the rough first inning, Mizgalski settled down and allowed only three hits and two walks over the next four innings before Maveus and Beaudoin closed it out.

“It was so uncharacteristic of Jack the way he started; he usually is on top of things right at the beginning,” Cavanaugh said. “But he left runners on second and third in that inning, then did the same thing in the third, and he gave us a chance to win by gutting out four more innings.”

“Honestly, it’s indescribable right now,” Haub said. “The fact we didn’t win sectionals last year because of a rough game, but now we won supersectionals, and I’ve never been to state before in my four years in the program – it’s surreal right now is the best way to describe it. It’s like nothing we’ve ever felt before, and we’re very happy to be here.

“We have to make sure we don’t let the pressure get to us,” she said. “Getting first, second, third or fourth in

the state is a huge deal, but we need to make sure we keep our cool, play how we know how to play, and make sure that no matter what happens, we play to the best of our ability.”

The winner of the two semifinals meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the two losers facing off at 11 a.m.

“I think we’re as confident as one can be,” junior defender Taryn Mathey said. “We made it to the final four, and we’re ready to find our spot. We’re definitely not going to be backing down.

We’re going to be giving it all we got.”

Cubs’ starters look to be on historic run

CHICAGO – If the Cubs make the kind of October history they have in mind this year, it likely is going to start with the kind of history their five starting pitchers seem to have in mind two months into the season.

Which could make the Cubs’ past seven games a glimpse into what any successful seven-game run in the fall might take.

When No. 5 starter Kyle Hendricks pitched another strong eight innings Thursday to beat the Dodgers, 7-2, in the final game of a four-game series at Wrigley Field, the rotation’s collective performance for the previous seven games looked like this: A 5-0 record, 1.12 ERA and an average of seven innings a start.

“It’s been unbelievable. And it’s really been the full season so far,” said Kris Bryant, who smacked the left-field video board Thursday with his second homer in as many games. “That makes it fun for us because we know what we’re going to get on the mound.

So we’ve just got to go out there and do our job.”

Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester, John Lackey, Jason Hammel and Hendricks are doing things two months into the season that no Cubs’ rotation has done since the end of the dead-ball era – lead the majors with a 2.38 ERA through 52 games.

“This is one of the grittiest, gutsiest groups I’ve ever been around,” said catcher David Ross, who has caught

Not even the 1933 and 1945 rotations – the only Cubs’ staffs with sub-3.00 ERAs in the past 96 years – have done for a full season what this rotation is doing so far.

Of course, they’re a long way from doing it for a full season. But so far they’re the biggest reason the Cubs are off to their best start (37-15) since 1907 – and the reason this week’s four-game series against the Dodgers looked at

times like playoff-style, pitching-defense-heavy baseball.

“I’m always about starting pitching,” manager Joe Maddon said. “And Kyle was unbelievably good.”

And that was just Thursday, talking about his fifth starter, who has 17 innings in his past two starts.

Before that?

For the first three games of the Dodgers series, the Cubs scored a total of four runs, and in two of those games had a total of four hits. But they won two of the three because of the pitching, including Lester’s 2-1 complete-game

win Wednesday.

Consider that Clayton Kershaw didn’t pitch against them, and it doesn’t take much imagination to think postseason series against the pitching staffs of the Mets, Nationals, Giants and/or Pirates could look a lot like this.

“They give us a chance every night,” said Jason Heyward, who delivered his first Wrigley Field home run as a Cub in Thursday’s fifth inning – one pitch before Bryant’s blast. “It’s not always going to be perfect, but more often than not they’ve picked us up as an offense.”

During the seven-game, 1.12 stretch the staff takes into Lackey’s start today against the Diamondbacks, the Cubs’ only loss was their first since July when Arrieta starts – and Arrieta pitched seven scoreless innings in that game.

Maddon said the biggest reason the Cubs’ rotation looks so much better than last year’s playoff group (3.36 ERA) is the addition of Lackey, the veteran who averaged 71/3 innings a start during his 2.09-ERA May. “Just the fact that he is pitching so well, and the edge that he brings to the group,” Maddon said.

But it has been a five-man phenomenon to this point – with three Cubs among the top six in National League ERA, and Hendricks (2.84) knocking on the top-10 door.

“Listen, man, they’re doing great,” Maddon said. “I have no complaints, and I really anticipate, with good health, they’re going to continue to pitch this way.”

Rio seeks to allay concerns 2 months before games

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Seeking to allay political, economic and health concerns as the games approach, Brazilian organizers assured IOC leaders Thursday that final preparations for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro would not be derailed by the Zika outbreak, a presidential impeachment or construction delays.

With South America’s first Olympics just more than two months away, Rio organizers made their final presentation to the IOC executive board ahead of the Aug. 5 opening ceremony.

“We are confident the games will take place and will be very successful,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams told reporters.

Also Thursday, the IOC cleared all four cities bidding for the 2024 Games – Los Angeles, Paris, Rome and Budapest, Hungary – to advance to the next stage of the race. Under new bidding rules, the IOC has no plans to trim the field and expects all four to go to the final vote in September 2017.

The IOC also authorized Kuwaiti athletes who qualify for the Rio Games to compete as individuals under the Olympic flag if, as expected, their national Olympic committee remains sus-

pended for government interference.

The suspension has been in place since October, and Adams said no progress has been made since then.

IOC President Thomas Bach plans to visit Brazil from June 14 to 16 to check on Rio’s preparations. He will meet acting President Michel Temer, who took over last month after Dilma Rousseff was suspended pending a Senate impeachment trial. A final vote on Rousseff’s removal could come just three days before the opening of the games.

AP sources: Ali hospitalized in Phoenix area

Boxing great Muhammad Ali is hospitalized in the Phoenix area with what two people familiar with his condition said might be more serious problems than his previous hospital stays.

The people told The Associated Press on Thursday that Ali is fighting respiratory issues that are complicated by the Parkinson’s that he was diagnosed with in the 1980s. The two spoke separately in describing Ali’s condition that they say is concerning to family members.

NEW YORK – The New York Knicks have hired Jeff Hornacek, who emerged last month as Phil Jackson’s surprising coaching choice. Jackson went with the former Phoenix Suns coach over anyone who had played or worked under him, even though he had said after the season he would likely pick somebody he already knew.

Good nutrition vital for seniors Dear Dr. K: I’m 84. My doctor is concerned about my declining weight. But ever since my husband passed away last year, I haven’t been very motivated to cook. Any advice?

Dear Reader: I see this with my patients quite often. The sadness and depression that follow the loss of a loved one can cause apathy. After years of cooking for two, it can be hard to make the effort to prepare regular, nutritious meals for one.

Also, when you do make the effort to cook, little things remind you you’re only cooking for one. One of the great songwriters of the past 50 years, Joni Mitchell, said it this way: “But when he’s gone, me and them lonesome blues collide. The bed’s too big, the frying pan’s too wide.”

If you’re not motivated to cook, you might wind up skipping meals. Or you might rely on less-healthy convenience foods, such as cereal, frozen dinners or canned foods.

Some of my patients eat the same thing for every meal. They don’t bother with fruits or vegetables. They eat poorly, and their diet lacks variety.

That can lead to malnutrition – deficiency in vitamins, fiber, protein or calcium. And malnutrition can lead to poor digestion, weight loss, bone problems and fatigue.

Here’s my advice. Aim for three meals a day, using these general nutrition targets: • Fill a quarter of the plate with protein (chicken, fish, legumes, eggs or cheese).

• Fill a quarter of the plate with whole grains (wild rice, quinoa, whole-wheat pasta).

• Fill half the plate with vegetables (go for variety and color).

• Add one piece of fruit, yogurt or both.

I don’t mean every single meal must have each of these components, just that

For example, the following simple meals all are healthy: • a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich on whole-wheat bread, with a piece of fruit; • an egg atop whole-grain toast, with yogurt and fruit; • a whole-grain waffle with a little peanut butter, along with fruit and a small glass of milk.

Another tip is to blend convenience with fresh food. For example, take low-sodium soup stock and add some frozen vegetables. Or buy rotisserie chicken and use it throughout the week in soup, sandwiches or a salad.

Finally, set aside one or two days a month to make a big batch of something – lasagna, soup, stew or a casserole. Divide each into individual servings and freeze for later use. That way, you have something healthy to just reheat on days when you don’t feel like cooking.

The sadness that follows a loss can cause you to neglect caring for yourself, including eating well, and then poor nutrition can make you feel worse. It can be a vicious circle. You might feel as if you don’t have the energy to cook, but once you start to eat right, you suddenly may have the energy to see your friends or family more often, go to the store, pursue a hobby – or even cook a healthy dinner.

parents and I live on opposite coasts of the United States. I have visited them many times over the years. I’d like them to visit me, but my mother refuses to travel. (She is healthy and not scared of flying or traveling.)

At first, she said she didn’t have the money, so I offered to pay for the ticket and lodging here in California. Her next excuse was she didn’t have the time off, so I suggested she request it months in advance, or travel during her company’s annual two-week shutdown. She wouldn’t consider it.

My sister, who lives in the South, has had the same problem with Mom. We have told her how it makes us feel and asked her why she won’t travel to either of us. Mom just mumbles she knows how we feel, but she will give us no reason. Even Dad has become fed up with Mom’s inertia, so he came to visit me on one trip and my sister on another.
