The 5 worst kinds of voicemail messages POLL The phone in my office has a little red light that flashes when someone has left me a voicemail.

It always leads to a sense of foreboding.

Not because I don’t like talking to readers – I do. There even are some regular callers with whom I talk regularly.

But voicemail can be a uniquely frustrating means of communication. Here are the five worst kinds of messages: 1. The secret. The caller leaves their name, and their number, and I’m supposed to call back, with no idea what it is they want or if I’m even the right person for them to talk to.

Dialing the numbers feels like walking into a trap. Or maybe there’s just an upcoming bake sale. Who knows?

2. The one where you don’t leave your number. This one will drive you nuts for hours. Someone calls to say that we got something wrong or did something terrible, and there’s a perfectly good explanation for why we did what we did – but they don’t leave their number so I can call them and share it.

3. Mr. Hyde calling. Sometimes, people leave really angry messages on the machine, but after some time has past and they’ve cooled off, they’re much nicer. I get

4. “I know it’s short notice, but ... .” This message usually is about something that was happening in two hours – and it was left an hour and a half ago. Hey, there’s no harm in trying. But I’m probably not going to be able to get to something with very short notice unless something’s on fire.

5. “My number is 815-991-5-blurp-64.” I hate when people don’t return my calls, so I usually try to get back to them if I can.

This message usually results in me dialing a couple of wrong numbers until I give up, get the number right, or can’t stand bothering random people any more.

Googling yourself leads to privacy controls

SAN FRANCISCO – Soon, all you’ll need to do is Google yourself if you’re wondering how deeply Google has been digging into your digital life.

In coming weeks, a shortcut to personal account information will appear at the top of Google’s search results whenever logged-in users enter their own names in the query box.

The feature is part of an update to the “My Account” hub that Google introduced a year ago to make it easier for people to manage the privacy and security controls on the internet company’s services.

While Google isn’t making any additional information available, it is making it easier

to find.

The link to personal accounts will appear at the top right of the listings for searches done on personal computers and at the top of requests entered on smartphones.

Google is making the change because it learned that many users doing a “vanity search” under their name wanted a quicker way to find out what the company knew about them, as well as to see how they are depicted on various sites across the internet, said Guemmy Kim, a Google product manager.

A new feature on Google’s mobile app also will quickly take users to their account information with a spoken request. All that will be required are the words: “OK, Google, show me my Google account.” This option initially will be available only in English.

DeKalb’s Hopkins Pool opens for season; short-term, long-term needs eyed

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Hopkins Pool is open for the season, after some recent patching and inspection revealed more of what DeKalb Park District officials already know about the local aquatic attraction: It is old and showing its age.

The pool is safe, officials have said.

But it has some mechanical and cosmetic issues park district officials long have wanted to address.

“In general, it’s just that it is an aging pool,” said Amy Doll, who was promoted last month to executive director of the DeKalb Park District. “The pool’s shell, what you can see, holds water.

But what’s underneath the deck, and the gutter system ... we don’t know what the condition is of that.”

But they do know it leaks, she said.

In the days last month before maintenance workers filled the pool for the first time this year, they patched leaks beneath the pool surface. Previously, patches have been placed on the nearly 30-year-old water slides.

And, aesthetically, Hopkins Pool is every bit old-school.

The first one opened in the 1950s.

The current one is 42 years old this year. It is an Olympic-size lap pool that holds nearly 500,000 gallons of water, treated in a small nearby shed. The bright blue flumes – built in the late 1980s and early 1990s – fun sprays at the kiddie pool and diving boards that offer multiple height options for cannonballs could make it forgettable that Hopkins is a dinosaur among its kind.

“When park districts put in public pools now, they design them differently,” Doll said. “You don’t find many pools in the state of Illinois – especially in northern Illinois – that are the age of this facility.”

She said it is laudable that the park district has maintained the pool for so long, especially considering the often-frigid temperatures and snowfall that could affect the structure.

But there have been professional recommendations to scrap the pool and its amenities and build anew. Although the slides were inspected in 2015 and found to be sound, the last overall pool audit was about eight years ago, according to park district data. The DeKalb Park District hired the Carol Stream-based firm of Williams Architects in 2008 to take a thorough look at the pool and make recommendations.

continued to maintain and replace systems and components to keep the facility operational, it is becoming ever increasingly difficult and costly to do so,” auditors with Williams Architects wrote in their report.

Further, they found that the pool’s aesthetics were having an impact on the number of visitors and the money generated. Doll said the layout of the locker rooms is among visitors’ chief

complaints. She and the auditors note that the facility lacks some Americans with Disabilities Act compliance.

Also, the current kiddie pool gets pretty packed.

“If we were designing a pool from scratch ... we would potentially look at some different design features,” she said.

Williams Architect recommended they do just that – for the $5.1 million

it proposed. In the meantime, however, Doll pointed out that last year, the pool underwent a paint job that helped better define such things as the lanes in the pool and other markings.

Because the park district has no plans to ask taxpayers for money to renovate the pool, those kinds of small jobs will have to do for now, officials said.

It might not seem so to a passers-by who see kids whizzing down the slide, teens diving off the board and scores of sunbathers taking up the lawn chairs, but park district data shows annual attendance fluctuates quite a bit year to year.

In 2010, a total of 44,221 people visited the pool from the Memorial Day to Labor Day weekends it was open. That count dropped to 34,041 by 2013 and dipped to 30,665 by 2015.

The loss is directly related to the pool’s age, auditors suggested.

Schools in limbo after Springfield budget failure

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After Friday, all of DeKalb County’s public school students will be on summer break, but the infighting that continues in Springfield could delay the youngsters heading back to class on time in August.

After 11 months of not having a Fiscal 2016 budget in place, the spring legislative session ended Tuesday without a spending plan for Fiscal 2017 that the governor would approve.

“The budget that the Democrats passed is $7.5 billion out of balance,” Gov. Bruce Rauner said.

He indicated he would not approve such legislation, which included money for public schools, higher education and grants to low-income college students.

And so the budget stalemate continues, as Republicans on Tuesday introduced their own version of appropriations, presenting a standalone bill that included state aid for K-12 education and another that paid for most

other bills. The legislation would have gotten the state past the November election and to January. But House Democrats rejected the plans.

“This week’s actions are disappointing,” Sycamore District 427 Superintendent Kathy Countryman said. “We’re hopeful, though, that there will be a K-12 budget in place before school starts.”

The district announced several layoffs earlier this year. Countryman said this latest Springfield impasse complicates district leaders’ future planning efforts.

“The biggest concern for us is the uncertainty,” she said. “This makes it difficult for us to plan.”

Lawmakers have said they would

work through the summer – again – in hopes of reaching an agreement.

Some said they especially want to ensure that elementary and high schools are funded, and even give money to higher education. This year, the state’s public universities received only a fraction of what they expected, and that money came more than nine months after the start of the fiscal year.

“It’s very frustrating,” said state Sen. Dave Syverson, R-Rockford. “We shouldn’t be using education as a political tool.”

Democrats, led by longtime House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, both of Chicago, have said the governor inappropriately ties his change agenda to a budget.

This latest wrangling, however, puts the state’s 2 million schoolchildren – in some 3,764 schools that are part of 859 school districts – in jeopardy. If there’s no budget by August, the more than 16,000 students who attend 41 schools in eight DeKalb County school districts, as well as their fam-

ilies, would be affected.

“My advice to them (school districts) is, if we don’t have a budget very quickly, they don’t open come August,” said state Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley. “That will be a total crisis that will force the [legislative leaders] to get to some compromise.”

Countryman said the district would use the funds it already has to make sure school starts on time.

Genoa-Kingston District 424 Superintendent Joe Burgess said his district would work out a plan to welcome students back as scheduled.

He said District 424 officials foresaw the state’s current fiscal distress and made adjustments in advance, including cutting staff and expenses.

“Our first obligation is to our students and educating them,” said Burgess, who is set to retire at the end of next school year.

He called the state’s budget debacle “Draconian.”

“All the results of this budget impasse,” Burgess said, “there’s no silver lining to it.”

Judge sentences driver in crash that injured Sycamore student

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A former Sycamore High School student was sentenced Wednesday to 24 months of nonreporting probation after he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors in connection with an October 2014 crash that severely injured a classmate.

Judge Philip Montgomery sentenced Connor Shaver, 18, of the 800 block of Janet Street, to 24 months of nonreporting probation and 100 hours of community service. Shaver also must pay $2,500 in fines and court costs, according to court records.

Shaver was charged in 2014 with aggravated reckless driving and driving more than 35 mph faster than the limit. Aggravated reckless driving is a Class 4 felony typically punishable by one to three years in prison.

On Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless driving and misdemeanor speeding as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

Shaver had rejected a similar offer last week; and his attorney, Rick Amato, and Assistant State’s Attorney Howard Oestry were unable to reach a deal. The disagreement focused on whether Shaver should be given pro-

Amato argued for nonreporting probation. He said this punishment made more sense in the case because

Shaver had complied with the conditions of his release on bond and had no previous criminal record. Amato also said Shaver was working with a software company and may have job opportunities out of state. Working in another state would be difficult if

Shaver had to report to a probation officer on a regular basis.

Oestry said formal probation was warranted because of the seriousness of the crimes. Earlier, he had told the judge that he spoken to the crash victim, Morgan Witmer, and that she wanted the case dropped entirely.

Oestry also said the victim wouldn’t object to nonreporting probation.

Judge Montgomery sentenced Shaver to nonreporting probation after admonishing him for driving more than 100 mph at the time of the crash. The judge said that during the conference he learned Shaver was in a relationship with Witmer.

“Do you have any concept of life and death? Do you have any concept of long-term relationships?” the judge said. “If she had died, this would be a totally different matter. ... Is this sinking in?”

Shaver, dressed in a suit and tie, looked down at times while the judge spoke. His parents sat in the gallery.

William “Bill” Cody Weeks, 90, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2016, at his home. Bill was born Oct. 11, 1925 to John William and Ellen (Johnson) Weeks in Malta, Illinois. On Nov. 13, 1948, he married Patricia Cote in Oregon, IL. She passed away on May 7, 1974. He then married Ardis Davidson on June 9, 1984. In 1952, Bill was approached by Smith Oil Company out of Rockford to open up Weeks Goodyear Service in Rochelle. This proposal proved to be a long, successful and lucrative opportunity for him.

Bill is preceded in death by his wife, Ardis, on Nov. 6, 1999; his brothers, Bob and John; sister, Anna Belle Weeks and his son-in-law, Richard “Dick” Anderson.

Witmer’s mother has filed suit against Shaver, his father, Todd Shaver, and School District 427. Debra Witmer filed the suit both individually and on behalf of her daughter; it seeks more than $50,000 in damages.

The civil suit claims District 427 officials failed to enforce their policy prohibiting students from driving their own vehicles to classes at KEC. It also seeks damages from Connor Shaver and Todd Shaver, who owned the 2004 Nissan 350z sports car his son was driving that day.

The lawsuit is pending.

Shaver was driving west on Rich Road when he accelerated to 110 mph in a 55 mph zone.

He lost control of the vehicle, which swerved off the road, hit a utility pole and rolled over several times, police said.

Shaver had passed the KEC-bound school bus just before the crash. In the aftermath, a student on the bus called Witmer’s mother, who was at O’Leary’s Restaurant and Pub, the restaurant the family owns in downtown DeKalb.

KINGSTON – A Kingston man faces felony charges after being accused of raping two girls at a party on his 18th birthday, a day before he graduated from Genoa-Kingston High School.

Brenton W. Cleveland, 18, of the 34700 block of Glidden Road, Kingston, was charged with unlawful restraint, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault.

If convicted of the most serious charge, criminal sexual assault, he could be sentenced to four to 15 years in prison.

A warrant was issued for his arrest Friday, and Brenton W. Cleveland surrendered Cleveland Tuesday at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, according to court documents. He was released the same day after posting $25,000 bail, according to jail officials.

Both of the alleged rapes happened May 14 at a party at Cleveland’s home in Kingston, police said. The father of one of the victims, a 16-year-old girl, said Cleveland was serving alcohol to minors at the party, according to court documents.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said no further charges are expected in the case and no other suspects are believed to have been involved as of Wednesday morning. He said it would be difficult to prove whether alcohol was being served at the party more than two weeks after it occurred.

A 16-year-old girl went inside Cleveland’s house the night of the party to use the bathroom, according to a statement from the girl’s father. Cleveland pushed his way into the bathroom and closed and locked the door before raping her, the father’s statement said.

It also claims Cleveland only stopped when the girl fell to the floor and that he left her lying there.

Cleveland also is accused of forcefully touching a 15-year-old girl’s breasts and raping her, according to court documents.

Parents of both girls requested emergency stalking no-contact orders Tuesday in an effort to keep Cleveland from having any contact with them. However, Judge Marcy Buick dismissed both requests “for the reasons stated on the record,” court documents show.

As a condition of Cleveland’s release from jail, the judge ordered that he have no contact with either of the girls, court records show.

St. Charles-based attorney R. James Haule read a brief statement from the Cleveland family.

“In light of all that has transpired over the last week, we would like to thank our family, friends and community, which we have lived in our entire life, for their support,” the statement said. “In America, you are innocent until proven guilty, and the truth shall reveal itself. We deny all the hearsay statements made by the alleged victim’s father and look forward to meeting our accusers in court.”

Cleveland is next due in court at 1:30 p.m. June 22.

Bruce Rauner and Illinois’ ruling Democrats began looking for other options Wednesday even as they focus on November and try to convince voters the other side is to blame for the state’s enormous fiscal mess.

Just hours after lawmakers adjourned their spring session, Rauner and fellow Republicans began touring the state, bashing Democrats.

But there’s huge political risk for both sides leading up to the general election. As Senate President John Cullerton put it late Tuesday: “(Rauner) is in trouble, just like we’re in trouble.”

“We have universities that might close, social service providers that might close and schools that might not open,” the Chicago Democrat said.

“And we’re all confronted with this right now.”

CHICAGO – A judge has determined that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s emails, texts and other communications transmitted over private devices aren’t exempt from disclosure.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Kathleen M. Pantle denied Emanuel’s motion to dismiss the Chicago Tribune’s lawsuit alleging that he violated the state’s open records laws by refusing to release private emails and text messages about city business.

The lawsuit filed in September seeks an order to have the mayor’s office comply with a state Freedom of Information request and to produce the documents, the Tribune reported. It also seeks to have Emanuel declared in violation of the Illinois Local Records Act if he failed to preserve the emails and texts.

The state’s largest state employees union, which is locked in a bitter contract dispute with Rauner, criticized his visit to the prison, with a spokesman for Bruce the group saying in a Rauner statement he was “exploiting state worksites for his own political purposes.”

“Gov. Rauner should focus on his own job – signing a budget without precondition – and leave state employees to do theirs,” said Anders Lindall, spokesman for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Council 31.

Police have names of suspects in death of woman

CHICAGO – Chicago police said they have the names of some in the group of men who allegedly chased a couple onto Lake Shore Drive over the weekend, resulting in the death of a 32-year-old woman.

Report: Airports need more help keeping intruders out

While intruders routinely breach the security fences protecting runways and planes at U.S. airports, the federal Transportation Security Administration is not keeping up with the threat or doing enough to help airports identify their vulnerabilities, according to a government report.

Congress asked the U.S. Government Accountability Office to investigate how often people get past airport perimeter security, and whether the TSA could do more to help airports anticipate and prevent incidents.

Using TSA data, the accountability office identified more than 2,500 security incidents in each of the past three years at the nation’s roughly 440 commercial airports. Those incidents ranged from people jumping fences to reach jets and passenger terminals to workers who forgot their security badges piggy-backing with a colleague through checkpoints.

Illinois officials: Look out for potentially rabid bats

SPRINGFIELD –The Illinois Department of Public Health is warning the state’s residents to look out for potentially rabid bats and avoid any contact.

The department said in a news release Tuesday that 10 bats found in the state this year have tested positive for rabies.

Bats are becoming more active with warm weather, so the possibility of exposure is increasing.

The department said 97 bats were found with rabies in Illinois in 2015.

Rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system. Without treatment, it is usually fatal.

People can get rabies when bitten by an infected animal or if saliva from an infected animal gets into their eyes, nose, mouth or an open wound.

Officers swarm UCLA in response to shooting The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – Hundreds of heavily armed officers swarmed the sprawling UCLA campus Wednesday following a shooting that forced thousands to barricade themselves in classrooms and offices, some using belts and chairs to secure doors, until authorities determined the gunman and the professor he shot were dead.

About two hours after the first 911 call came in around 10 a.m., with the center of campus still saturated with officers, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said it was a murder-suicide and declared the threat over.

Two men were dead, and authorities found a gun and what might be a suicide note, he said.

William S. Klug, a professor of mechanical engineering, was gunned down in an engineering building office, according to a law enforcement official. The official has knowledge of the investigation but wasn’t authorized to publicly discuss it. The shooter has not yet been identified.

Colleagues of Klug’s tell The Associated Press he was a married father of two and a kind, gentle person.

UCLA biology and chemistry Professor Charles Knobler said those who knew Klug are in shock. He described the professor as “a very lively, lovable, likable guy.”

Olivia Cabadas, a 22-year-old nursing student, was getting ready to take a quiz in the mathematics building when her classmates began getting cellphone alerts. Through a window, they could see students rushing down the hallway. An officer yelled that everyone should get out.

“It was just a little surreal – this is actually happening,” Cabadas said. “It was chaos.”

Congress is playing games over Zika As members of Congress visit their districts over the Memorial Day recess, we hope they have kept in mind a warning from Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Zika virus, for which there is no effective vaccine or therapy, can infect a person in a flash, he said during a visit Thursday to The Post. “You can get a mosquito bite, and your life changes,” he said.

The virus is mild for most people but in pregnant women can lead to fetal neural defects, and the prospect that local transmission soon will begin in the United States is very real.

The Republican congressional leaders – Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky – and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin – have vowed to end gridlock on Capitol Hill.

But in response to Zika, they have inexcusably dithered.

President Obama asked for nearly $1.9 billion in emergency funding in February. When Congress failed to act quickly, the administration redirected existing funds in order to scale up an initial response.

After much delay, the House and Senate passed widely divergent bills, neither entirely fulfilling the president’s request. The Senate made a serious start with what Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., calls a $1.1 billion “down payment,” with no offsets, which was supported by all Democrats and slightly fewer than half the Republicans. House Republicans wasted weeks and weeks quibbling over whether Obama’s request was detailed enough, then approved a $622 million bill that would raid accounts for Ebola and other important work, such as emergency preparedness, and would last only through September.

The House bill is woefully inadequate. Even more irresponsible was the GOP diversionary tactic to push through a bill to weaken the Clean Water Act under the guise of a Zika response.

Congressional Republicans are playing games with a public health emergency.

The enemy here is a formidable one. As Frieden told the National Press Club on May 26, the Aedes egypti mosquito that carries Zika is “the cockroach of mosquitoes.

“It lives indoors and outdoors. It bites through the daytime and in the nighttime. Its eggs can last more than a year. They can hatch in a drop of water. ... When they take a blood meal, they will often bite four or five people at once. So they’re capable of rapidly spreading the infection. There is no example of effective control of this mosquito in the modern era.”

To fight an outbreak requires resources and time. Congress is undermining the effort on both counts. Vaccine development, now underway, is a long-term project; surveillance is a multiyear endeavor; creating rapid diagnostics is a major undertaking; mosquito control is fragmented in local governments, often uneven and urgent.

Those on the front lines need to know – now – that programs to fight Zika will not start and stop. When members of the House and Senate return next week, they must go to conference immediately and pass emergency supplemental funding, along the lines of the Senate bill, to enable a determined and serious battle against the Zika virus.

Scientists and public health experts know what to do. Why are Republicans in Congress impeding their necessary work?

Illinois awaits regret, remorse Memorial Day weekend TV viewers might have caught a showing of “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” the 1957 fictional tale about British POWs – led by a proud, obstinate colonel – who help their Japanese captors construct a crucial railway bridge in Burma.

Only after the colonel unwittingly nearly ruins an Allied attempt to blow up the bridge does he realize the error of his ways.

“What have I done?” he exclaims at the climax before, fatally wounded, he stumbles, falls onto the detonator near the riverbank, and sets off the dynamite charges.

What have I done?

By uttering those words, the colonel, played

by Alec Guinness, showed remorse and regret – even shame. Would that Illinois political leaders could feel the same.

The House of Representatives, led by Speaker Michael Madigan, the Senate, led by Senate President John Cullerton, both Democrats, and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration have failed to reach agreement on a budget for Fiscal 2017, which will start July 1. They also have failed to reach an agreement on a budget for Fiscal 2016, which started last July 1.

Their political pride and obstinacy have prevented them from working together for the good of all the state.

And now, May 31 – the Illinois General Assembly’s adjournment date – has come and gone. The chances of a grand budget compromise have very likely come and gone, too – a compromise that would have boosted tax revenue by billions of dollars, which Democrats

support, in exchange for business-friendly reforms and curbs on union power supported by the governor. After May 31, legislation requires three-fifths support to pass, not just a simple majority.

In the wake of the Legislature’s inaction, unfortunately, future prospects for Illinoisans who depend on state spending have gone from bad to worse.

Those threatened include public schools, colleges, universities, grants for low-income college students, myriad human service providers, soil and water conservation districts, and more. The state’s abysmal credit rating will get worse.

So will the state’s finances, as court-ordered spending – which covers about 90 percent of the budget – pushes deficits higher and higher.

How long will it take before state leaders realize how far their political gamesmanship has pushed the state toward the abyss?

How long will it take before, gazing at the fiscal turmoil and wreckage around them, they realize the error of their ways and exclaim, “What have we done?”

How about a little remorse, regret and shame – followed by positive collaboration to find solutions to the state’s pressing problems?

The problem is, happy endings are a lot easier to come by in the movies than in our troubled state. One thing is certain: More and more Illinoisans must be shaking their heads about electing this bunch of uncompromising leaders.

“What have we done?” It’s a good question for remorseful voters to ask themselves.

‘Star Wars’ prequels predicted current political era CASS SUNSTEIN

The Washington Post Cool people dislike the “Star Wars” “prequels” – Episodes 1, 2 and 3. The dialogue is wooden, the actors are stiff, and there’s far less energy and wit than in the beloved original trilogy. But if you’re looking for a quick guide to current political struggles – both in the United States and all over the world – you should give the prequels another chance.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, paralyzing political divisions threatened democratic governments.

Disputes over free trade, and the free movement of people and goods, were a big reason. Stymied by polarization and endless debates, the Senate proved unable to resolve those disputes. As a result, nationalist sentiments intensified, leading to movements for separation from centralized institutions. People craved a strong leader who would introduce order – and, simultaneously, combat growing terrorist threats.

A prominent voice, Anakin Skywalker, insisted, “We need a system where the politicians sit down and discuss the problem, agree what’s in the interest of all the people, and then do it.” And if they didn’t, “they should be made to.”

Eventually, something far worse happened. The legislature voted to give “emergency powers” – essentially, unlimited authority – to the chief executive. An astute observer, Padme Amidala, noted, “So this is how liberty dies ... with thunderous applause.”

That, in a nutshell, is the story of the “Star Wars” prequels: the triumph of empire over democracy, facilitated by Anakin Skywalker and resulting in autocratic rule by Chancellor (later Emperor) Palpatine.

It’s a cartoon. But before filming, George Lucas studied real transitions from democracies to dictatorships – which sometimes occurred right after nations had moved to embrace democracy in the first place.

He asked why “the senate after killing Caesar turn(ed) around and g(a)ve the government to his nephew?. ...

Why did France, after they got rid of the king and that whole system, turn around and give it to Napoleon?”

He noted, “It’s the same thing with Germany and Hitler. ... You sort of see these recurring themes where a democracy turns itself into a dictatorship, and it always seems to happen kind of in the same way, with the same kinds of issues, and threats from the outside, needing more control.” The problem is “a democratic body, a senate, not being able to function properly because everybody’s squabbling.”

In Germany, Hitler’s rise was solidified by his successful claim to unlimited authority to make law, free from any requirement of legislative permission. In the midst of an apparent crisis, signaled by a fire at the Reichstag building, Hitler demanded that authority.

A chilling newspaper account from Feb. 2, 1933, reads right out of “Star Wars” (above all, the grant of emergency powers to Palpatine), but it’s real: “The power to dissolve Parliament at his discretion and to rule Germany by decree without Parliament was entrusted today to Adolf Hitler, Germany’s new chancellor, by President Paul von Hindenburg, according to the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, an organ close to the government. President von Hindenburg signed a decree for the dissolution of Parliament, which is expected to become effective before the reconvening of Parliament, scheduled for next Tuesday.”

Which brings us to the present day. After the

breakup of the Soviet Union, Russia showed significant movement in the direction of democratic self-government. But amid the nation’s economic and political challenges, Vladimir Putin rose to power. He often has been a recipient of thunderous applause, not least when he defended the illegal seizure of Crimea.

More recently, authoritarian politicians with nationalist tendencies have been attracting significant support in Austria, Germany and France. Their platform? Protection against terrorism and crime, economic nationalism, doubts about free trade and an insistence on a muscular government, striking against the pervasive forces of disorder.

That is Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s platform as well. With respect to the Islamic State: “I would just bomb those suckers. ... I’d blow up every single inch.” He warns and threatens those who oppose him; sometimes he sues them. He doesn’t seem to think well of freedom of speech, promising to “open up” libel laws. He exclaims, “We need law and order!”

When he says such things, Trump often is greeted with (you guessed it) thunderous applause.

Is this how liberty dies? We can’t really know what Trump would do as president, and for more than 200 years, U.S. institutions have proved to be spectacularly robust. In our country, any question about the potential death of liberty – as occurred in a galaxy far, far way – seems wildly excessive. But here’s a lesson from “Star Wars”: That’s an essential question to ask.

Most voters don’t think she’s honest, either, and think she also is looking out primarily for herself. Besides, she doesn’t need to gain support from people who are being fooled by Trump; she needs to win over people who dislike him but dislike her, too.

Henry Olsen, a conservative election analyst at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, said: “She needs to be the candidate for the person who is not irretrievably committed to blowing up the system. And I don’t think there’s a majority of those people.” The fact that the incumbent president has a 51 percent approval rating in the same Washington Post-ABC poll that has Trump slightly ahead suggests that Olsen is right.

Americans already think she is qualified to be president and he isn’t. The path should be open to get them to follow the implications of that thought. “I really think this is a race about temperament,” Axelrod said. “If I were a strategist on the other side of him, that would be the thing that I would work hard.”

My guess is that Clinton and her advisers will reach the same conclusion, and make Trump’s unfitness for the presidency the central message of her campaign. Her real meaning will not be explicitly spelled out, but will be unmistakable nonetheless: You may not like either of us, but you should fear him.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Taryn Mathey decided to forgo soccer last year, instead focusing on basketball.

At the start of this season, the Sycamore junior decided to return to the pitch.

Now, Mathey is a part of a Sycamore defense that has given up 14 goals this season and has powered the Spartans into a Class 2A State semifinal against Rochester at 1 p.m. Friday at North Central College in Naperville.

“I’m so glad I came out this season,” Mathey said. “I was just talking to Meagan Schwartz on the team, we’re both like we can’t believe it. I was like, what if I took this season off? It would have been ridiculous. I’m definitely glad I came out this year.”

Mathey came off the bench as a freshman but sat out her sophomore year. Her sister, Taylor Mathey, played one of the two center defense positions in the Spartans’ scheme alongside Anna Haub last year. Taylor Mathey graduated; and since Taryn came back, she took over her sister’s position.

Haub said both Mathey sisters are similar players and made the transition easier.

“Even though she hasn’t played for a year, it still feels the same,” Haub said.

Taryn Mathey said she went from needing a break to needing to return to playing soccer.

“Freshman year, it was kind of difficult because I was playing with my sister, who’s a junior on varsity,” Mathey said. “I had been pulled up, and it was all great and everything. But I decided coming in my sophomore year – I did all the offseason stuff – but I decided that I’m just not feeling it this season. I wasn’t getting into the groove. But this year, I missed it, and I needed it back. It was kind of like a last-minute decision.”

Mathey said she was able to stay in shape during her year off – she was still a part of the Spartans’ basketball program. Both she and Sycamore girls soccer coach Dave Lichamer said there are basketball skills that translate to the field.

“I’m very defensive-minded coming in,” Mathey said. “I’m not as well-talented in the offensive aspect, but defense is my thing. It’s very easy to use my skills from basketball in soccer. It’s helpful.”

“She’s certainly not afraid to body up on the ball or go up and get it, too.”

Lichamer said he respected Mathey’s decision to pursue basketball for the year, but was very happy when he found out she was going to return to soccer.

“We were certainly happy,” Lichamer said. “When we heard she wasn’t going to play last year, it was a bit of a downer. We were really happy she decided to come back to us. She obviously had a big impact on the back line that’s really solidified with her back there.”

three runs against Davis and junior reliever Aly Jesionowski. The Broncos loaded the bases with no outs before Sclafani being hit by pitch forced home the tying run.

Emily Lezcano and Alonzo followed with a run-scoring single and double, respectively. Jesionowski prevented further trouble with a strikeout and groundout.

On the whole, Kaneland limited a po-

tent attack that entered the game with 55 home runs.

Kuefler said that “you can’t take anything away” from either Knights pitcher before praising Kaneland’s season-long work ethic. The Knights persevered after graduating a handful of key members from the 2015 team.

“We know these girls worked hard,” Kuefler said. “Early on in the season, our big goal was to win conference, and the next one was to win regionals. We missed conference, so the girls just did a great job on switching focus and working on everything that we needed to do to get ready for a state run.”

Cohrs represented the potential tying run with two outs in the seventh.

She lined out to right field to end the game.

Moments later, as what proved to be the final huddle of the Knights’ season dispersed, several players remained to talk with coaches, parents and friends.

“We struggled for most of the first half of the season, and I think we all came together as a team and figured it out toward the end,” Cohrs said. “And I think that us coming together and winning regionals, it was a good way to go out. … You know, it’s a great group of girls. It always has been. There’s no other high school team, anything, that I’d rather play for.”

“I think they definitely had a chip on their shoulder, and they came out and showed it,” Knights senior third baseman Meg Cohrs said. “But it’s not like we didn’t, you know.”

Lower-seeded Kaneland (22-15) hardly lamented leaving the bases loaded against Montini (33-3) in the top of the first inning.

Well, at least initially.

“You know what, it’s a positive,” said Knights first-year coach Mike Kuefler, a popular assistant before taking the reins of the program this season. “I mean, you load the bases up against Montini in the first inning, and then you think that we can do that the next couple innings. It just didn’t transpire.”

Montini out-hit Kaneland, 9-8, but the Knights stranded just four more runners after their first at-bat.

Fleet-footed sophomore second baseman Lexi Abruzzo, who had three of Kaneland’s hits and scored both runs, gave the Knights the game’s first lead in the third inning. With Cohrs on first base with one of her two hits, Abruzzo broke late from third base on a throw trying to nab Cohrs on the bases.

The Broncos responded in the bottom half, with Loyola-bound senior catcher Alyssa Sclafani singling home a run.

“There was a lot of emotions going on from that past game, and we’ve been working hard all year,” Montini junior first baseman Naomi Alonzo said. “I guess you could see we wanted it.”

As Cohrs attested, Kaneland didn’t exactly concede. Montini sophomore pitcher Bri Clifton effectively kept the Knights off balance, however, spacing two walks and eight strikeouts en route to her 18th victory.

“I don’t really think it was anything special, pitching-wise. She was kind of like what we’d been seeing before,” Knights senior Courtney Davis said. “I

Albers’ 1st hit since 2007 lifts Sox over Mets

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Told he was going to hit in the 13th inning, Matt Albers scrambled.

The White Sox reliever had not batted since 2009, had not gotten a hit since he was a rookie in 2007.

Since he pitches right-handed but bats from the other side, Albers needed an elbow pad. Dioner Navarro found Brett Lawrie’s on the bat rack and strapped it on Albers.

Navarro gave him his 7¼-inch helmet, and fellow pitcher Mat Latos handed him a bat.

“It’s too big,” Albers said.

So Navarro gave him his own wood, a Rawlings custom DN4 made of ash, weighing 32 ounces and 33½ inches long.

Albers stepped in against New York Mets reliever Logan Verrett, took a ball followed by two strikes, fouled a pitch into the dirt and took another ball. And then the astonishing occurred.

Verrett threw a 91 mph belt-high fastball, and the pudgy pitcher sent the ball soaring the opposite way, deep beyond the drawn-in outfielders. It landed just short of the warning track, took two hops and bounced off the fence.

The 33-year-old Albers went into second standing up, pumping a fist three times as teammates roared, pounding the dugout railing and each other on

the back. He chugged to third when Verrett’s next pitch hit the dirt and caromed off the backstop and scored his first big league run on Jose Abreu’s 326-foot sacrifice fly to center, easily beating Juan Lagares’ off-line throw.

Then he caught his breath and got the three final outs, giving the Sox a wacky 2-1 win Wednesday.

“A lot of guys were laughing, saying like how funny that was,” Albers recalled in the clubhouse. “They basically couldn’t believe that I did that.”

Todd Frazier tied the game in the seventh against Jacob deGrom with his major league-leading 17th homer.

After rallying from a four-run deficit

Tuesday to stop a seven-game slide, the Sox won consecutive games for only the second time since May 6-9 and won a road series for the first time since April 25-27 at Toronto.

Albers had been 2 for 34 (.059) at the plate in his major league career, singling off Pittsburgh’s Zach Duke – now a Sox teammate – and San Francisco’s Barry Zito in 2007. He had been 0 for 21 in the minors.

As Albers awkwardly went into second standing up and second baseman Neil Walker tagged him on the right knee, Albers used his right arm to brace himself on Walker’s right shoulder and then grabbed the shoulder

with his left arm, too.

“He almost joined the cadaver club,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

Albers had thought about sliding.

“I’m not sure if I can do this,” he remembered thinking. “I almost ran Walker over. I was like, sorry, man, I don’t know how to slide.”

Verrett (3-3) thought he could blow a fastball by Albers.

“You saw his first couple of hacks,” he said. “He was backing out of the box, so I was very surprised that he hit a ball that well.”

Albers (2-4) relieved Sox closer David Robertson to start the 12th and worked around a leadoff walk and Walker’s two-out single. After walking Rene Rivera with two outs in the bottom of the 13th, Albers retired pinch-hitter Kevin Plawecki on a groundout to end a 4-hour, 41-minute game.

“That hit means nothing if I don’t go out there and get those next three outs,” Albers said.

This definitely was a wild win. In the first extra-inning game at Citi Field since Kansas City won Game 5 of last year’s World Series to take the title, Sox pitchers walked 13 while their fielders turned five double plays and the Mets stranded 14 runners. The Sox’s bullpen, which wasted late leads in three games at Kansas City last weekend, pitched 13 scoreless innings against the Mets in the three-game series.

Lester’s complete game, 10 Ks lead Cubs past Dodgers

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jon Lester pitched a four-hitter for his first complete game of the season, helping the Cubs edge the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-1, Wednesday despite another lackluster night at the plate.

The Cubs finished with just three hits against Mike Bolsinger and two relievers after they managed only one in Tuesday night’s 5-0 loss to Los Angeles.

But one of the Cubs’ hits was a long, two-run homer to center field by Kris Bryant in the third inning, and Lester (6-3) took over from there.

The left-hander struck out 10 and walked none in his second straight win, settling down nicely after Kike Hernandez’s leadoff homer on his second pitch. He retired his last 15 batters and threw 113 pitches in his 13th career complete game and first since a 2-1 win Sept. 15 at Pittsburgh.

With two relievers standing on the mound in the bullpen, Lester retired Justin Turner and Corey Seager on grounders to shortstop before Howie Kendrick struck out swinging for the final out.

Bolsinger (1-2) fanned six in five innings. Pedro Baez followed with two hitless innings for Los Angeles, and Casey Fien allowed Jason Heyward’s two-out single in the eighth before whiffing Bryant for the last out of the inning.

One mistake in the third was enough to drop the Dodgers to 3-3 on their seven-game trip.

Dexter Fowler reached on a leadoff walk and Heyward lined out to right before Bryant drove a 1-0 pitch to the bushes in center for his team-best 12th homer, snapping a tie with Anthony Rizzo.

The major league-leading Cubs (3615) won for the seventh time in eight games and improved to 5-1 on their 10game homestand.

Cubs dominate early NL All-Star voting

CHICAGO – Addison Russell got an update on the All-Star voting from his wife, Melisa. “She was making me blush a little bit,” a grinning Russell said.

The young shortstop had plenty of company.

The Cubs dominated the first update for the NL All-Star balloting on Wednesday, with first baseman Anthony Rizzo receiving the most votes and four of his teammates in position to start the July 12 game in San Diego.

“I mean it’s awesome to see,” Rizzo said before the Cubs’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. “It’s an honor with what we’ve been doing on the field as a group, all of us. For the fans to recognize that is awesome. It’s an exciting

time for the Cubs.”

Russell, third baseman Kris Bryant and second baseman Ben Zobrist also had the most votes at their respective positions, and Dexter Fowler had the second-most votes to Washington star Bryce Harper in the outfield. Ace right-hander Jake Arrieta also should be in the mix when NL manager Terry Collins of the Mets names his starting pitcher.

“I think our guys are likable. They’re approachable,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “They’re blue collar, man.

There’s not a white-collar guy among them. They come out there, they get their fingernails dirty and I think people appreciate that. I think they’re very Chicago.”

OAKLAND, Calif. – LeBron versus Steph. King James versus the Baby-faced Assassin. Nike versus UnderArmour.

Any way you slice it, it’s a dream matchup for the league in the NBA Finals. Again.

A second straight championship showdown between LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers and Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors puts the league’s two brightest stars on its biggest stage.

It also could mark the beginnings of a new rivalry between the longtime face of the league and the shooting supernova threatening to supplant him.

“It’s really annoying for me. That’s not what I’m playing for, to be the face of the NBA or to be this or that or to take LeBron’s throne or whatever,” Curry said Wednesday, one day before

the Warriors host the Cavs in Game 1.

“You know, I’m trying to chase rings, and that’s what I’m all about. So that’s where the conversation stops for me.”

Curry got his first ring last year, at James’ expense. And there have been subtle signs of a brewing rivalry ever since.

As the Curry hype was building during the Warriors’ run to the title last season, James went out of his way to proclaim himself “the best player on the planet” during the finals. He played like it, too, averaging 35.8 points, 13.3 rebounds and 8.8 assists while carrying a Cavs team missing Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love through six games in the series.

After Curry won his second MVP award this season in unanimous fashion – something no other player, including four-time winner James, had ever done – James offered a nuanced take on the achievement.

‘Love Story’and beyond A look at a few classic romantic tearjerkers

hen was the last time you had a good cry at the movies?

Call it emotional blackmail or just good storytelling, but there’s nothing quite like a romantic tearjerker, whether it’s a forbidden love, a terminal illness or just bad timing that conspires to keep our on-screen lovers apart, and us sobbing.

The filmmakers behind “Me Before You,” out Friday, hope that their film about a working-class girl and the wealthy quadriplegic she falls for might just be a worthy addition to the canon.

While we wait to indulge in the saga of Lou and Will, here are some romantic classics to prepare those tear ducts for maximum waterworks.

So stock up on your tissues and get ready for the feels-so-good despair.

LOVE STORY (1970)

“Love Story” didn’t invent the tearjerker, but Erich Segal certainly indulged in the melodrama of it, all to great effect in this story of a preppy Harvard guy and the feisty, not-so-wealthy Radcliffe girl of his dreams, who finds out she’s dying. Not only is it touted as being one of the

first modern-day blockbusters and the film that saved Paramount, but it’s also the one that, for better or worse, taught us the catchy, if questionable, advice that love means never having to say you’re sorry.

AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (1957)

It might look like a candy-colored musical dream, but Jacques Demy’s “Umbrellas of Cherbourg” packs quite a punch with its tale of a beautiful shopgirl (Catherine Deneuve) and a handsome mechanic (Nino Castelnuovo) torn apart by timing and circumstance. The tragedy is in the banality of the aftermath and the ordinariness of moving on and growing up. Michel Legrand’s luxurious score doesn’t hurt either.

An intoxicating rendezvous between Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr on a cross-Atlantic cruiser, the promise of a reunion atop the Empire State Building and a series of some of the more infuriating missed connections that ever befell two human beings has made this remake an enduring classic.

THE WAY WE WERE (1973)

Is it just more tragic when opposites attract and then implode? Katie (Barbra Streisand) and Hubbell (Robert Redford) had the passion but not the staying power in Sydney Pollack’s film. Maybe an apathetic pretty-boy and an impassioned activist weren’t meant to be after all, but it doesn’t make that goodbye any less heart-wrenching.

Sycamore summer concert series has music for all tastes DAILY CHRONICLE

Sycamore Park District will kick off its Summer Concert Series tonight.

Concerts take place Thursdays in June and July at 7 p.m. near the Good Tymes Shelter in the Sports Complex, ¼ mile south of Route 64 on Airport Road. Attendees can bring a picnic or purchase food on site from Caddyshack Grill. There will be no concert June 23.

Each concert attracts a crowd of nearly 300 music lovers of all ages.

The charming atmosphere of the Good Tymes Shelter and nearby pond add to the ambiance and make for an enjoyable evening.

There also are several amenities in the vicinity that can be enjoyed while listening to the music such as sand

‘My Fair Lady’ opens today

‘West Side Story & More’ opens Friday

For the first time in its 70-year history, Stage Coach Players will present “My Fair Lady.” The show opens today.

It is a timeless story of Eliza Doolittle, a scruffy girl who meets Col. Pickering and Henry Higgins while selling her flowers on the streets of London. A bet between the two men to teach her to speak properly within six months produces results that no one could foresee.

This story is adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play and Gabriel Pascal’s motion picture “Pygmalion.”

Songs including “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “The Rain in Spain” and “I’m Getting Married

in the Morning” will delight the audience.

Stage Coach’s Eliza Doolittle will be played by Rose McGregor, who recently appeared as Mary Poppins, and Henry Higgins by Gavin Wilson, who appeared as Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar” in 2013.

The cast of more than 50 actors and singers and other crew and musicians result in a group of more than 75 people to coordinate by director Sue Price Johnson.

Performances are 7:30 p.m.

Thursday through Saturday and June 9-11 and 2 p.m. June 5 and 12.

The series will conclude on June 18 with author Aaron Sitze who lives and teachers in Oregon, Illinois. His book “The Andrew Jackson Stories” is an illustrated collection of flash fiction stories about the seventh president told from the viewpoint of his gardener.

Join the Midwest Museum of Natural History on Tuesday, June 14, for the opening of its new exhibit “The Greener Side: Become a Botanist,” with free admission all day.

This exhibit will feature the importance of plants and many hands-on opportunities.

“We are excited to bring this exhibit to the museum in time for summer,” Beth Gilliam, operations manager, said in a news release.

“The ‘Become a Wildlife Biologist’ exhibit from 2013 was extremely well received, and visitors asked for more experiences like it. ‘The Greener Side’ gives visitors another chance to step into the shoes of a scientist and discover a part of natural history through play.”

The Greener Side explores botany – the study of plants. From the medicines that heal us to the foods that we eat, plants are essential to human survival. Greener Side botanists will explore plant cells, create leaf rubbings, and identify plants using a dichotomous key. This exhibit is fun and educational for the whole family.

Light refreshments will be served from 3 to 7 p.m. June 14. The exhibit will run through Nov. 18. The museum is located at 425 W. State St. in Sycamore.

WNIJ 89.5 FM will feature five regional works of fiction as part of its continuing Read With Me Book Series.

The series, hosted by Dan Klefstad, broadcasts interviews with the authors, who read selections of their work and share their inspirations. Read With Me will air every morning at 6:52 and 8:52 a.m. beginning Tuesday, June 14, through Friday, June 17, during the station’s broadcast of Morning Edition, and at 7:35 a.m. June 18 during Weekend Edition.

WNIJ developed the Read With Me Book Series as a way to introduce and engage its listening audience with outstanding work by writers across the region.

The first installment of the series airs June 14 and will feature a novel by Kristin Oakley, who titles the book after its setting, the fictional town “Carpe Diem, Illinois.” It is a population that has

quietly “unschooled” its children for decades, eschewing tests and classrooms for real-life experiences. Now, long-smoldering political feuds – and personal secrets – threaten to ruin this community.

Oakley’s book was named Book of the Year by the Chicago Writers Association.

The book series continues June 15 with “HoneyLee’s Girl,” by G.K. Wuori, who judged WNIJ’s first writing contest, Three Minute Fiction, last October. When the FBI enters your life, they are not to be trusted.

So says Wuori’s character Michelle Monelle, who must describe the turmoil of her youth to two special agents, including her marriage at age 14, mysterious strangers who may or may not have been government agents, and the passionate Native American woman on the run from everything.

June 16 will present the first young adult novel featured in the series. Written by Maria Boynton, “Ruthlessly Aadi” is the story of 15-year-old Aadi Benoit, who flees a neglectful, abusive mother and discovers what it means to be

Swimming is good form of exercise Dear Dr. K: I’m overweight, and I want to exercise. But I have painful knees that make it difficult to walk. Is swimming a good alternative?

Dear Reader: In terms of convenience, it’s hard to beat brisk walking as a form of exercise. You don’t need any special equipment or venue, and you can do it in many places. But during the winter, harsh weather can make walking outdoors unpleasant – even treacherous at times. And for some people – such as those with achy knees, sore hips or substantial weight – walking may be uncomfortable.

The good news is swimming allows you to meet your fitness goals with less stress on your joints and muscles than brisk walking.

Large studies looking at the benefits of physical activity have tended to lump swimming together with other types of exercise. That’s because relatively few people swim on a regular basis. But plenty of evidence points to lower rates of heart disease among people who do regular, moderate- to vigorous-intensity exercise. And swimming laps definitely qualifies.

Recreational swimming will burn about the same calories as brisk walking. One key advantage to swimming is water makes you buoyant, which takes the stress off your joints. This can be especially helpful for people who are carrying excess weight.

Water also offers resistance as you move through it, which allows you to work out vigorously (if you’re able) with little chance of injury. Swimming laps also can be relaxing and meditative, which may offer some stress relief. Finally, swimming is an activity you can do throughout your life.

If you haven’t been swimming in a while, start slowly. Try swimming just five to 10 minutes while coordinating your breathing, strokes and kicking. Invest in a

These exercises are done in waist-deep or higher water and sometimes use floating devices and weights. Many community centers, YMCAs and other facilities with pools offer water aerobics classes.

One downside to swimming is, because it’s not weight-bearing, it’s not optimal for keeping your bones strong. If you do decide to take up swimming as your main form of aerobic exercise, you’ll need to supplement it with some weight-bearing exercise.

Strength training, walking, dancing, stair climbing or gardening all fit that bill.

True, they put stress on the knees. But the exercises will have strengthened support for your knees, and that should reduce any discomfort.

Severe arthritis of my right hip caused me to have a hip replacement. I attributed the arthritis in that hip to the jogging (on hard surfaces) I’d done for decades, so I stopped jogging. If I lived in Southern California (where I was raised) and had a pool, I would have switched to swimming.

However, in Boston where I live, only indoor pools have water most of the year, and getting to a pool every day is a hassle.

So I use an elliptical cross-trainer. It minimizes the impact on leg joints, though not as much as swimming. A local gym is very likely to have these machines.

In bridge deals, numbers rule, especially tricks taken. In tandem with that, the defenders should bear in mind the number of tricks they need to defeat the contract.

How should East let that number guide his play in today’s deal? South is in four spades, and West leads the heart queen.

Partner opens one no-trump.

You have game values with one or two four-card majors. Should you use Stayman to try to find a 4-4 major-suit fit? Certainly when you have a singleton or void. When you are 4-3-3-3, though, go with three no-trump. With 4-4-3-2, my basic rule is to use Stayman when we have only the minimum values for game, and my hand has a weak doubleton.

East sees three defensive tricks: the spade king and two top hearts.

Since from the point count West can have no other winners, the fourth trick will have to be a club ruff. But East shouldn’t drop the heart two at trick one, hoping partner will get the message. Instead, he should take control; he overtakes the heart queen with his king and returns his singleton club. Then, when East gets in with his spade king, he leads a low heart, putting West on play to deliver the contract-killing club ruff.

PUBLIC NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE Hinckley-Big Rock CUSD #429 will be destroying temporary special education records for students who either graduated or exited special education in Hinckley-Big Rock CUSD #429 between the years of 20102011. These records will be destroyed thirty days after publication of this notice. The Illinois Housing Development Authority (the “Authority”) gives notice that it will hold a hearing on June 16, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the offices of the Authority located at 401 N. Michigan Avenue, Suite 700, Chicago, Illinois 60611 in connection with the proposed issuance by the Authority of not to exceed $55,000,000.00 in aggregate principal amount of its tax-exempt bonds (the “Bonds”), in one or more series, pursuant to a common plan of finance. The proceeds of the Bonds will be used to finance or reimburse, through one or more loans to the Owners listed below (or affiliates thereof), (i) all or a portion of the costs of acquiring, rehabilitating and equipping the multifamily residential housing properties set forth below (the “Developments”), and (ii) a portion of the costs of issuance for the Bonds.

The Authority is a body politic and corporate of the State of Illinois created by the Illinois Housing Development Act, as amended (20 ILCS 3805/1), for the purpose of assisting in the financing of decent, safe and sanitary housing for persons and families of low and moderate income in Illinois. The Authority is authorized by the Act to issue the Bonds to finance the Developments described in this Notice.

This public hearing is being held to comply with the requirements of Section 147(f) of the United States Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, and the relevant regulations promulgated thereunder. Oral comments may be limited to ten minutes. Written comments may also be submitted to, and additional information obtained from, the Authority at its offices at 401 N. Michigan Avenue, Suite 700, Chicago, Illinois 60611 at any time prior to the public hearing.
