Toddler’s toast leads to mom’s anxiety POLL YESTERDAY’S Working mothers are always trying to balance their priorities.

It can be exhausting, juggling (in no specific order) work, me time, romance, friends and motherhood. To each priority, I try to give 100 percent effort. My goal is to concentrate on one thing at a time. However, that goal is sometimes impossible. I find myself multitasking to meet my needs because there is just not enough time in a day, week or month.

My daughter, Hannah Jo, enjoys playing with her neighborhood friend, Jillian, across the street. It just so happens that her friend’s mother and I are good friends as well.

In order to get in some adult time, we have taken our daughters for walks, played at the parks and used sidewalk chalk all over the driveways on the court. If they have not hung out in a while, they will ask, “Where is Jillian?” or “Where is Hannah Jo?” It is a perfect storm that my daughter has a “best friend forever” across the street, and so do I. As mothers, we can have some interesting conversations. We ask for advice, and we complain. Thank goodness, most of the time, we laugh. Inevitably, during these chats, my best friend and I will have a beer in our hand. We are not alcoholics by any means, but we do enjoy grown-up juice a couple of times a week. Of course, this is to relax and laugh a little easier about the stressors of the day or week.

Women sue city over topless ban, calling it discriminatory

DENVER – A growing movement to remove laws against women going topless is headed to court in Colorado.

A federal lawsuit filed Tuesday challenges Fort Collins’ indecency code, which makes it a crime for women but not men to show their nipples.

The Fort Collins City Council voted unanimously last year to keep a law that prohibits the display of female breasts, rejecting a growing movement to remove gender-specific indecency codes.

The hometown of Colorado State University did make an exception for nursing mothers. But otherwise it remains a $250 fine for a woman over the age of 10 to display her breast “below the top of the nipple.”

Two women suing Fort Collins say the law is sexist.

As I pondered these questions, I came to the conclusion that everything was going to be OK. The reason I know it will be OK is because I drink responsibly. I do not stumble around drunk. I do not become mean. And I am not making a fool of myself. My job never has been in jeopardy, and I am physically fit.

I justify drinking a beer or two with the stressors of balancing my working mother’s life. I want my booze, and I want to drink it, too. Without shame, I declare to all the moms out there, “Cheers beers!”

Fort Collins spokesman David Young said in an email that the city is “evaluating its response” to the lawsuit and has no further comment.

Other Colorado cities, including Boulder, Denver and Vail, have removed gender-specific language in their indecency codes. Indecency codes are largely local, with very few states having laws on the books banning the exposure of female breasts.

A federal judge in Chicago recently ruled against a woman challenging that city’s law against women displaying nipples. The woman fought a $150 fine tor participating in a 2014 “Go Topless Day” protest near Lake Michigan.

Local traditions, community celebrations planned through September Voice your opinion

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The calendar is jampacked with local traditions and community celebrations scheduled through September, which is good news for anyone hoping to avoid crowded airport security lines this summer.

With tourism season in full swing, families looking to cut loose and unwind this season should consider a “staycation,” filled with visits to each of the county’s local attractions, DeKalb County Visitors and Convention Bureau Director Debbie Armstrong said.

“Tourism week is usually the first or second week in May. This year, it was May 1 through the 7th. It indicates the start when families are thinking about getting out of school and planning their vacations,” Armstrong said.

“Basically, that’s the kickoff to the very busy season that we experience all the way from there up until December.”

From Corn Fest – one of the area’s top draws – to a budding Sycamore tradition – the Ribs, Rhythm and Brews Fest – DeKalb County has events planned for all interests and walks of life, Armstrong said.

“I think that we also are very aware that we’ve got changing demographics, and we’re trying to appeal to both visitors and community members,” Armstrong said. “Obviously, from my perspective, it’s about bringing visitors into the area.”

Here are a few of the many events to look forward to this summer:

Genoa Days

Dates: June 8-11

The 81st annual Genoa Days festival has a lineup of celebrations scheduled. The Genoa Days King and Queen contest will kick off at 8 p.m.

June 8 on the festival’s main stage, with performances by Beaux, Beth Fowler School of Dance, and Wade Buzzard Band to follow throughout the weekend.

Chuck Criswell, 66, died March 4, leaving behind his local family business, Chuck’s Auto Center, which opened in 1990 and closed its service doors in March.

Criswell began Sycamore’s Turning Back Time Car Show, now the Fizz Ehrler Memorial Turning Back Time Car Show, on a rainy day in July 2000.

The weekend showcases vintage and classic cars and motorcycles, and it has come to draw a significant number of out-of-state visitors.

“Of course, ‘Turning Back Time’ is another one of the big draws,” Armstrong said. “Everybody loves cars.

That’s for sure.”

The show is judged by participant voting. The day’s top 100 vehicles and other awards are decided based on a vote tally, with a some special awards determined by the show’s committee, and Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy.

Corn Fest

Dates: Aug. 26-28

DeKalb’s most widely attended festival will take place Friday, Aug. 26, through Sunday, Aug. 28, in downtown DeKalb. The headlining band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, is set to perform Aug. 28, after sets by The Neverly Brothers and Back Country Roads.

“With Corn Fest, one of the highlights there is the music and the ability to hear music along with all the different booths that are there, and the community events that are featured,” Armstrong said.

Along with the traditional Chuck Siebrasse corn boil, the festival will host an auto show of its own Saturday, Aug. 27, at the former DeKalb police department, 200 S. Fourth St., DeKalb.

Visitors older than 12 will be required to pay a $5 entry fee to enter the beer garden and sound-stage area. No

Sandwich Fair

Each year, 90,000 to 240,000 people gather at the Sandwich Fair, which will take place at the Sandwich Fairgrounds.

The Sandwich Fair offers live entertainment, arts and crafts, food vendors and carnival rides, among other attractions.

Although planning for this year’s fair – the 129th annual – still is taking place, advance five-day season passes are available by mail or in person starting Sept. 6. Five-day passes for adults cost $22, or $8 for children. Daily general admission also is available for $5 at the gate. Children younger than 5 may enter for free.

Ayala: ‘I have an open-door policy’ New Maple Park police chief wants to focus on community outreach

editorial@daily-chronicle.com MAPLE PARK – According to new Maple Park Police Chief Tony Ayala, the community should have no trouble getting to know him.

“I have an open-door policy with my office. When someone comes in my door, I like to give them my full, undivided attention,” Ayala said.

“One thing I want people to know is that I’m an approachable guy. I’m understand- Tony Ayala ing, and I’m fair to people.”

Ayala’s goal as chief in the coming months is not to only introduce himself to the community, but also get to know Maple Park residents as well.

“I believe that we need that strong commitment with each other. Police can’t be everywhere, but they need to find out who they can contact if need be. A community needs to know its officers, and officers need to know their people,” Ayala said. “As one of the leaders, I think it’s important to know the community members. I’ve always believed police officers need to know their environment [in law

enforcement].”

Before joining the Maple Park police force, Ayala had an extensive background in not only in law enforcement, but also the mental health field. It was in his position at Ogle County where Ayala first saw the opportunity to use his experience in the mental health field simultaneously with law enforcement. For Ogle County, Ayala helped develop jail programs for those suffering from addiction.

Ayala became a part of the Maple Park police force just three years ago, after an impromptu meeting with past chief Mike Acosta. Since then, Ayala has been serving the community as an active police officer. Ayala said the transition to chief has been relatively smooth because of his lengthy experience in other roles.

“I think one of the things that helps is for me is to have that handson experience in my prior positions.

I believe it’s going to be one of those things where at least I’ll have that experience, and I’ll be able to not only provide the training for my staff, but be involved in it, too,” Ayala said.

Over the next couple of months, Ayala hopes to not only continue his transition into the new position, but also to better assess the needs of the community.

Ayala said one of his goals is to offer more outreach programs for the community.

“My commitment extends to youth services,” Ayala said. “We’ve talked about the outreach center, the Special Olympics fundraiser …

I want to continue that role and that leadership and really [focus] on what our community needs.”

DeKalb County unemployment rate up from last April DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – DeKalb County’s unemployment rate stood at 5.7 percent in April, up a percentage point from April 2015, when it was 4.7 percent, according to preliminary figures released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The jobless rate in the city of DeKalb was 5.8 percent in April, up from 4.8 percent in April 2015.

The unemployment rate identifies those who are out of work and looking for work, and is not tied to collecting unemployment insurance benefits.

Statewide, all metropolitan areas in experienced over-the-year unemployment rate increases for the third consecutive month.

“Illinois is tied for the highest unemployment rate in the nation – even though, in prior months, some areas have experienced relatively low unemployment rates,” IDES Director Jeff Mays said in a statement.

“This is the first time since January 2010 that every county has had overthe-year increases in their unemployment rate. This is significant in helping to determine true economic

creases were in Lake-Kenosha (plus 3.1 percent, plus 12,200 jobs), Rockford (2.2 percent, 3,300) and Springfield (1.5, 1,700). Six metro areas lost

jobs including Bloomington (minus 2.7 percent, down 2,600 jobs), Carbondale-Marion (minus 1.7 percent, down 1,000) and the Quad Cities (minus 1.6 percent, down 2,900).

The not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in Illinois was 6.2 percent in April and stood at 12.2 percent at its peak in this economic cycle in January 2010.

Nationally, the not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in April 2016 and 10.6 percent in January 2010 at its peak, according to the news release.

OBITUARIES ELSIE M. DRAKE

1957, he was united in marriage to Patricia “Pat” Jensen. He graduated from Illinois State Normal Teachers College (NIU) in 1959. Gilbert taught general science in Galesburg and later taught biology in Elsie M. Drake, 79, Sycamore at the high school. He later former longtime resident worked for Turner-Cleanweld Industries in the Rollo area, passed in Sycamore. He was one of the designers away peacefully with of the 1984 Olympic Torch and traveled at family at her side, Sunday, the beginning of the Olympic Torch Run. New York man accused of crashing stolen car

WATERMAN – A New York man faces felony charges after police said he crashed a stolen car on his way back to his home state.

James M. Dayton, 27, of the first block of Mary Street, Binghamton, New York, is charged with unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle. If convicted, he could face three to seven years in prison.

Police, on their way to a unrelated call on James Dayton Tuesday, spotted a gray 2003 Nissan Altima in a field east of Route 23 and Minnegan Road near Waterman.

Shortly after, officers found Jones walking south in the 12000 block of Route 23, according to a news release.

Police said Dayton told them he was trying to get back to New York, but had car troubles north of where police found him.

At the time, police said, Dayton had on him belongings from the Nissan Altima, which had been damaged after striking a ditch and going into a field. The car had been reported stolen Monday from Janesville, Wisconsin.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s officers arrested Dayton about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and took him to the DeKalb County Jail. His bond will be set in court Wednesday.

Jefferey Jones, 22, of the 100 block of North Jefferey Jones Maple Street, was charged Monday with forgery, theft, unlawful possession of ammunition and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. If convicted of the most serious charge, forgery, he could face two to five years in prison.

A worker at the Subway in Hinckley called the sheriff’s office to report the crime, telling police the suspect had used counterfeit $100 bills on two occasions that day. Deputies canvassed the area and spoke to a resident who was able to identify the suspect as Jefferey Jones, authorities said.

Printed on the bills he used to pay for the sandwiches were the words “for motion picture use only” and “for cinematic use only,” court records show.

Deputies said that when they arrived at Jones’ residence, he invited them inside. Deputies said they saw drug paraphernalia, Subway sandwiches and a small stack of money in plain view and arrested Jones.

His bond was set at $3,000 in court Tuesday. He must post $300 bail to be released.

Jones is due back in court June 14.

SYCAMORE – The city’s fire department has been awarded new CPR equipment and a fire alarm system, thanks to funds from a federal grant and Homeland Security program.

City officials learned late last month that they would be awarded a $52,700 grant to buy two new CPR chest-compression devices that will be carried by each of the fire department’s front-line ambulances, according to a news release.

Illinois set to enter 2nd year with no budget

“Today we end the spring session of the General Assembly in stunning failure,” he said, blaming Democrats for prolonging the budget battle.

The Republican governor’s temporary budget proposal is a last-ditch effort to give the state some near-term stability after an 11-month stalemate between the Republican and Democratic lawmakers over a spending plan.

Democrats argue Rauner’s insistence on passing pro-business legislation and curbing the power of unions – one of their strongest constituencies – is the reason for the historic impasse.

CHESTER – Jurors on Tuesday found former suburban Chicago police officer Drew Peterson guilty of trying to hire someone to kill the prosecutor who helped to convict him in the killing of his third wife.

Lawmaker seeks to revoke Hastert’s state pension

SPRINGFIELD – An Illinois lawmaker is pushing legislation to take away former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s taxpayer-funded state pension following his conviction in a hush-money case.

Six killed, dozens wounded in bloody Chicago weekend

CHICAGO – Chicago began the unofficial start of summer over Memorial Day weekend with dozens of shootings that killed six people and wounded 56 others, contributing to a spike in violent crime in the city this year.

13-year-old girl is dead, brother is missing in river

WILMINGTON – Authorities said a 13-year-old girl is dead and her 12-year-old brother was missing after they became trapped in water near a dam on the Kankakee River in northeastern Illinois.

Police in Wilmington said the search for the boy resumed Tuesday morning. The Will County Coroner’s Office identified his sister as Abiyail Arroyo of Joliet.

She was pronounced dead Monday evening after being taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Wilmington is about 60 miles southwest of Chicago.

Police Chief Phil Arnold said the siblings went into the water, and two bystanders tried to help.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the children ended up in the water. Officials said the area is marked with “no swimming” signs.

Poll: Americans back change in party nomination system

Many Americans are not happy with the way presidential candidates are chosen and have little faith in the fairness of either the Democratic or Republican system, according to a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

According to the survey, the public prefers open primaries to those that are closed to all but party members. They like primaries instead of caucuses, and they oppose the party insiders known as superdelegates, who have a substantial say in the Democratic race.

“It’s kind of like a rigged election,” said Nayef Jaber, 66, a Bernie Sanders supporter from San Rafael, California. “It’s supposed to be one man, one vote.”

Changing the primary process has become a rallying cry for Democrat Sanders. Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump also has criticized the system.

According to the poll, 38 percent of Americans said they hardly have any confidence that the Democratic Party’s process for selecting a presidential nominee is fair; 44 percent said the same of the Republican Party’s process.

Just 17 percent of Republicans and 31 percent of Democrats have a great deal of confidence in their own party’s system being fair.

“The common man needs to be included more,” said Gwendolyn Posey, 44, a registered independent from Sparks, Oklahoma, who said she could not cast a ballot for Texas Republican Ted Cruz because she had not changed her registration to Republican in time.

Sanders has little if any chance of catching up to rival Hillary Clinton in votes or delegates, but he still hopes to influence the party platform, as well as spark debate about the rules. Trump also has called the Republican process “rigged.”

Both parties have complex mechanisms for choosing presidential nominees, with each state holding caucuses or primaries under different rules. Candidates earn delegates to back them at the summer nominating conventions, with a certain number required to clinch the nomination.

Democrats embraced superdelegates in 1982 to make sure party leaders have a say in who is nominated. By giving key insiders more voice, leaders hoped to avoid what some saw as a mistake in 1972, when George McGovern won the nomination but was a weak general election candidate. About 15 percent of the total delegates this year are superdelegates, and critics said this group has given Clinton an advantage. She holds a commanding lead over Sanders, however, even without counting the superdelegates.

Supporters of Sanders are especially incensed about the use of superdelegates, who can back any candidate at the convention regardless of how people voted in primaries and caucuses. Republicans have no equivalent to superdelegates.

Fifty-three percent of Americans said the Democrats’ use of superdelegates is a bad idea, according to the polls, while just 17 percent said it’s a good idea. Among Democrats, 46 percent said it’s a bad idea, and only 25 percent said it’s a good idea.

Sanders also has called for more open primaries, slamming states that won’t allow independent voters to participate, as well as ones where people must register with a party in advance. Americans generally also said that open primaries are fairer than closed primaries, 69 percent to 29 percent. Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say open primaries are the fairest, 73 percent to 62 percent.

The defense of closed primaries is that these are party events, designed for party members to pick their candidate for the general election. Just how difficult it is to register with a party for voting varies by state, with some allowing same-day registration and others requiring registration weeks or months in advance.

Caucuses, too, are on the outs with many people. They are often lengthy meetings held at a fixed time, unlike primary elections, which just require a stop at a polling place, if not a vote in advance. Poll respondents preferred primaries 81 percent to 17 percent, with overwhelming majorities of Democrats and Republicans saying so. Sanders has performed well in caucuses, however, in part because his supporters are willing to invest the time in them.

Police investigate parents of boy rescued from gorilla

The Associated Press CINCINNATI – Police said Tuesday they are investigating the parents of the 3-year-old boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo and had to be rescued by a team that shot the 400-pound animal to death.

Authorities said the investigation will look at the parents’ actions leading up to the incident – not the operation of the zoo, which is overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Police then will confer with prosecutors over whether charges should be filed, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said.

The incident has triggered a furor online, with some saying the boy’s mother should be charged with child endangering, while others want the zoo held responsible for the animal’s death.

Separately, USDA said it will investigate Saturday’s incident for any violations of the Animal Welfare Act. Zoo authorities said the unidentified boy climbed over a 3-foot-high railing, walked through bushes and plunged about 15 feet into a shallow moat. The zoo’s dangerous-animal response team

Ohio State University criminal law professor Ric Simmons said he doubts

a charge of child endangering could be proved in this instance, since the offense typically involves leaving a youngster unattended for an extended time, not a case of a child momentarily wandering off.

“The mother was standing next to a zoo exhibit and lost track of her child for perhaps a minute or so,” Simmons said in an email. “That has happened to almost every parent in the world in a public place.”

The boy’s family said he is “doing just fine” at home, and it had no further comment.

A federal inspection by USDA less than two months ago found no problems with the Gorilla World exhibit, but earlier zoo inspections detailed an incident in March in which polar bears escaped through an open den door into a behind-the-scenes hallway. No one was hurt, but an inspector warned that the public could have been “at great risk for injury, harm or death.”

Zoo director Thane Maynard said that using tranquilizers on the gorilla would not have knocked the animal out right away, leaving the boy in danger.

Maynard said 17-year-old Harambe was agitated by the commotion from

the crowd and was extremely powerful, capable of crushing a coconut in one hand.

He said the zoo remains safe for its 1.6 million annual visitors, but a review is underway to determine whether any improvements can be made.

Donald Trump weighed in Tuesday, saying the zoo had little choice but to kill the gorilla. Trump said it was “a very tough call,” but the child’s life was at stake.

The executive director of a Cincinnati-based animal rights organization is calling on the USDA to fine the zoo.

“The barrier obviously isn’t sufficient to keep the public out,” said Michael Budkie of Stop Animal Exploitation NOW. “Otherwise, Harambe wouldn’t be dead.”

Jack Hanna, host of “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild,” said the zoo made the right call by shooting the gorilla, telling WBNS-TV: “I’ll bet my life on this, that child would not be here today.”

In an interview with Boston TV station WFXT, conservationist and television host Jeff Corwin suggested that the boy’s family should shoulder some of the blame, saying: “Zoos aren’t your baby sitter.”

LOS ANGELES – A jury Tuesday convicted an actor who played a police officer on TV of second-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife that was partially witnessed by their two young sons.

The verdict in the trial of Michael Jace, who appeared on the FX series “The Shield,” came after a weeklong trial in which Los Angeles jurors were told the actor shot his wife, April, in the back and then twice in the legs with a revolver that belonged to her father.

Jace, 53, did not testify in his own defense. He told detectives soon after the attack that he had retrieved the gun to kill himself but couldn’t do it.

Instead, he planned to shoot his wife, an avid runner, in the leg so she would feel pain, Jace said in a recorded interview.

Deputy District Attorney Tannaz Mokayef told jurors the actor was waiting for his wife, shot her in the back and taunted her before shooting each of her legs.

Jace’s 10-year-old son testified that he heard his father say, “ ‘If you like running, then run to heaven,’ ” before firing the second time.

Mokayef said the potential sentence would be 40 years to life in prison when Jace is sentenced on June 10.

She said during the trial that the actor was upset that his wife wanted a divorce and believed she was having an affair, although no evidence was presented during the trial that she was cheating.

Jace’s attorney, Jamon Hicks, said his client is remorseful for killing his wife. The actor may speak during his sentencing hearing to express his remorse, but he wants to be respectful of April Jace’s family, the lawyer said.

Hicks previously told jurors the actor accepted responsibility for killing his wife, but he should be convicted of voluntary manslaughter because he shot her in the heat of passion.

Jace surrendered to police after the shooting and has been jailed since.

April Jace, 40, was a financial aid counselor at Biola University. She was married to Michael Jace for nine years and they had two sons, who were 8 and 5 at the time of her death.

Michael Jace had small roles in films such as “Planet of the Apes,” “Boogie Nights” and “Forrest Gump.”

Protesters on left are doing their best to sully the process Violence damages democracy.

Democrats and other activists on the left are doing their part to ensure that the 2016 presidential election is one of the ugliest in decades.

Their actions sully the democratic process and detract voter attention from where it belongs.

In a recent incident, protests turned violent May 24 outside an Albuquerque, New Mexico, convention center where presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump was holding a rally.

Protesters broke a glass door, jumped on police vehicles and threw burning T-shirts, rocks and bottles at police. Police used smoke grenades and pepper spray. Protesters inside the center were forcibly removed by police when they tried to disrupt the event.

In March, Trump canceled a rally in Chicago for safety reasons after hundreds of protesters showed up in the pavilion where the rally was to be held.

After the cancellation, fist-fights broke out between Trump supporters and protesters.

In April, hundreds of demonstrators took over streets near an Orange County amphitheater where Trump was holding a rally. Protesters threw rocks, broke a window on a police vehicle, punctured the tires on another and hurled objects at passing motorists.

Occasionally, Democrats have turned on each other. After the Nevada Democratic convention gave most of the state’s delegates to Hillary Clinton, death threats were left on a cellphone belonging to the state party chairwoman. Here’s a sample: “Praying to God someone shoots you in the face and blows your democracy-stealing face off!” And, “Hey (expletive) ... We know where you live. Where you work. Where you eat. Where your kids go to school/ grandkids. Prepare for hell.”

The behavior of Bernie Sanders’ supporters have Democratic leaders understandably worried about what might happen at the Democratic National Convention in July.

Last month, Gabriel McArthur, a delegate from Colorado, told the Associated Press, “I don’t think we’re going to see a lot of violence, but we are going to see some screaming and shouting if the DNC does not humanize itself.”

Perhaps Sanders could be doing more to discourage violence among his supporters. Perhaps other Democratic leaders could be doing more to discourage violence at Trump rallies.

But the real responsibility for violence rests on the participants. Their actions disgrace American democracy. There should be no need for riot police at campaign events. The violence must end before it escalates into scenes that are even worse.

Abuse prevention can’t take summer break

To the Editor: As many of your readers know, Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer. Day camps, swim lessons, sports leagues, vacation Bible study and many other kids’ sports and activities are about to consume the schedules of adults and children across DeKalb County.

It’s an exciting time!

Unfortunately, it also can be a time when kids have less supervision and, therefore, are at risk. For example, one in four girls and one in six boys will experience child sexual abuse before they enter adulthood. Even more shocking for many parents is that 93 percent of offenders are people the kids know and trust.

Although these statistics can make us feel overwhelmed, there also is a lot of room for hope.

Throughout the school year, Safe Passage worked with more than 10,000 county students to educate them on body safety and

child sexual abuse prevention.

We’ve also provided professional training to hundreds of their teachers and school administrators. During those workshops, we taught educators about the red flags of abuse, handling disclosures in a victim-centered way, the dynamics of grooming by child sexual predators and other critical issues.

We’ve gotten positive feedback and look forward to continuing these trainings next year.

However, in spite of these efforts, we recognize the vulnerability that kids face during the summer months.

For that reason, we already have teamed up with the DeKalb Park

District to provide similar trainings to its camp counselors and are having discussions with other youth serving agencies to do the same. Adults who work with children and want to fulfill their obligation to protect them should call Sarah Slavenas, our prevention coordinator, to arrange a free training at 815-756-5228.

I had a friend, a white guy named Dave Weitzel. Ordinarily, we spent much of our shift goofing on each other the way you do when you’re 19 or so and nothing is all that serious. But on that day after, the space between us was filled with an awkward silence.

Finally, Dave approached me.

“I’m sorry,” he said, simply. “I didn’t know.”

It is highly unlikely the new version of “Roots,” airing this week on the A&E TV networks, will be the phenomenon the original was. There are, putting it mildly, more than three networks now; and, with the exception of the Super Bowl, we no longer have communal TV events.

But the new show will be a success if it simply kindles in us the courage to confront and confess the history that has made us.

I didn’t know much about that in 1977. Sixteen years of education,

including four at one of the nation’s finest universities, had taught me all about the Smoot-Hawley tariff, but next to nothing about how a boy could be kidnapped, chained in the fetid hold of a ship, and delivered to a far shore as property.

As a result, I had only a vague sense of bad things having happened to black people in the terrible long ago. It stirred a sense of having been cheated somehow, left holding a bad check somehow, but I didn’t really know how or why.

I was as ignorant as Dave.

Small wonder. The history “Roots” represents embarrasses our national mythology. As a result, it has never been taught with any consistency.

Even when we ostensibly spotlight black history in February, we concentrate on the achievements of black strivers – never the American hell they strove against. So you hear all about the dozens of uses George Washington Carver found for a peanut, but nothing about Mary Turner’s newborn, stomped to death by a white man in a lynch mob.

We don’t know what to do with those stories, so we ignore them,

hoping that time, like a tide, will bear them away. But, invariably, they wash up instead in mass incarceration, mass discrimination and the souls of kids who know their lives are shaped by bad things from long ago, even if they can’t always say how.

Almost 40 years later, I’m embarrassed by the righteous vindication I got from Dave’s apology.

Dave Weitzel, the individual man, had not done anything to me. But, like me, he had never been given the tools to face the ugly truths America hides from itself, had never been taught how to have the conversation.

So we had only his shame and my anger. Had we managed to push through those things, we might have found common humanity on the other side. But we couldn’t do that because we didn’t know how.

Indeed, as best I can recall, we never talked about it again.

Trump’s vision for ‘energy independence’ is nonsensical Last week’s Wall Street Journal/ NBC News poll shows voters think Donald Trump would handle the economy better than would Hillary Clinton.

But from his destructive tax proposals to the illogical energy plan he detailed Thursday, there is little basis for that belief.

Trump’s vision on energy, as on almost everything, starts with the premise that the country’s politicians have sold out the American people.

President Obama has “done everything he can to keep us dependent on others,” he argued, with a policy of “death by a thousand cuts through an onslaught of regulations” on oil, gas and coal.

Trump’s headline policy is “complete American energy independence” by “lifting these draconian

barriers” so “we are no longer at the mercy of global markets.”

Setting “energy independence” as an overriding policy goal is a policy mistake of long standing in Washington. In fact, it is far less risky to participate in the global market than to erect barriers to energy imports or ban them entirely.

If you rely only on yourself for your oil, you put all of your eggs in one supply basket.

Disruptions because of a natural disaster or anything else that would be relatively localized in a global oil market would cause major volatility in a closed domestic market. The best way to insulate the country from oil price volatility would be to make the economy less dependent on oil, but Trump has no interest in doing so.

Trump’s error reflects a deeper

contradiction in his thinking. He praises the unencumbered free market, insisting that, “the government should not pick winners and losers” and that he would “remove obstacles” in the way of private enterprises.

At the same time, he promises energy independence, a renaissance for the coal industry and other goals that would require government interference in the market.

The decline of coal, for example, has occurred in large part because, under the Obama administration, natural gas drilling has boomed – lowering the price of gas and spurring utilities to move away from coal.

Trump’s plan is dangerous as well as incoherent. In his zeal to revoke environmental regulations, Trump promises to kill the Envi-

ronmental Protection Agency’s carbon dioxide rules and pull the country out of the Paris climate agreement.

He also promised “clean air and clean water”; but over the past half-century, it has been government regulation, sometimes market-based, that has helped clear up the nation’s air and water.

Trump’s plan would lead to dirtier air and water – and to a massive blow to the global fight against climate change. With great care and difficulty, President Obama persuaded major polluting countries such as China to listen to scientists and move with the United States toward cuts in emissions.

Future generations will suffer if Trump succeeds in reversing that progress.

Everything was different, the day after.

If you are a child of the millennium, if you’ve never known a world without 500 networks, it may be difficult for you to get this. You might find it hard to appreciate how it was when there only were three networks and no DVR or even VCR, so that one major TV program sometimes became a communal event, a thing experienced by everybody everywhere at the same time.

So it was on a Sunday night, Jan. 23, 1977. I was a senior at the University of Southern California, working part time at the campus bookstore. When I went to work the next day, you could feel that something had shifted.

Your black friends simmered like a pot left too long on the stove.

Your white friends tiptoed past you like an unexploded bomb.

Bliss doll houses, wooden houses covered with a colored paper lithograph that includes doors, windows, bricks and even hedges, are among the best of the Victorian toys. The company started in 1831 in Pawtucket, R.I. making wooden screws. Toys were made from about 1871 to 1914 but the name Bliss was kept in use until 1935. Bliss made many wooden toys with lithographed exteriors like trains, ships, houses, blocks, games and even an ark with animals.

Other companies were also making similar toys. Theriault’s Auctions sold a pair of 13-inch-high wooden chairs for dolls with a lithograph that pictured a man reading a book on one, a woman in a shawl on the other. Made about 1885, they are by an unknown maker. The pair sold in a Theriault’s doll auction in Newport Beach, California for $952. *** Q: How long has Royal Doulton been making Bunnykin figurines? I have about 43 of the small figures but need more information to find the best ones. Aren’t some being reissued by the company?

A: Bunnykins were first made in 1939

by Royal Doulton. The British firm started making dishes and figurines in 1853 using the name Doulton. They changed their name to Royal Doulton in 1902, and although the company is now part of WWRD Holdings, the Royal Doulton backstamp is still in use. In 1939, they made six earthenware Bunnykin figures. Production stopped during World War II, then started again in 1972. They have made over 500.

In 2004, the production of Bunnykins was moved overseas to Thailand and then to China. Once a Bunnykin figure was discontinued, Royal Doulton never reissued it. Each figure has a name and number on the bottom that can be identified online

A: The original Apple I computer is considered one of the most valuable and collectible computers in the world. Sycamore scores twice in 2nd half to top Geneseo

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Ella Holland had just put the Sycamore girls soccer team ahead in the second half of the Class 2A DeKalb Supersectional on Tuesday.

Emma Stice and the Spartans needed just 21 seconds to push it to a twogoal cushion in a 3-1 win over Geneseo, clinching their first trip to the state tournament since 2008.

“We wanted so bad to make it to state,” Stice said. “We couldn’t lose when we were that close.”

Holland scored with 15:35 left in the game, taking Geneseo goalie Taylor Magerkurth out of the net, corralling the bouncing ball off a pass from Stice and high-kicking it into the empty net.

After the kickoff, Taylor Meier fired a shot straight off Magerkurth, but Stice was in the right spot for the rebound with 15:14 left.

“They say right after one you’re supposed to go out five minutes as hard,” Stice said. “I feel like we did that right after (Holland’s) goal and finished it away.”

Sycamore coach Dave Lichamer said Stice’s goal for the Spartans (23-21) was a big one, as his team prepares to take on Rochester at 1 p.m. Friday in a semifinal at North Central College in Naperville.

“Any cushion, yeah, you can just take a breather at that point and realize you can hold onto the ball,” Lichamer said. “It’s working out the clock at that point. There’s no threat, no real danger, just keeping them from getting one back.”

The teams went 31 minutes without scoring to start the game, a stretch that ended when Saydie Holland broke through the defense of Geneseo (19-3-2) and got into a race with Magerkurth to the ball. She tapped the ball to the far post for the first goal of the game with 9:01 left in the half.

Lauren Coulter tied the game for Geneseo on what appeared to be a cross attempt that ended up finding its way into the back of the Sycamore net.

“That’s the momentum switch we needed,” Geneseo coach Ian Kline said.

It was one of those games that could have gone either way at certain points, and that one minute went their way.”

Kline said the size of the field and his team’s unfamiliarity with it caused some problems in the first 40 minutes.

“Basically it took us the first half to adjust to the field,” Kline said. “This is one of the largest fields in the state that I know of for high schools to play on. That’s what I wish the IHSA had thought about, knowing they had a two-game advantage to warm up on this field. If it was all equal in terms of the field, that would be a different thing. This is an unfortunate advantage they had on us.”

With game tied at 1-1 in the 62nd minute, Claire Schroeder came up with a second goal-saving stop in as many games for the Sycamore defense.

Maturing Crosby back on top of his game

The Associated Press PITTSBURGH – Sidney Crosby does not have an off switch. If there was one, Patric Hornqvist believes he would have found it by now.

Not once over the last two years while playing alongside one of the NHL’s most popular players has Hornqvist seen an exasperated sigh, a roll of the eyes or so much as a smirk from the superstar who has dutifully served as one of the faces of the league from the moment the Pittsburgh Penguins drafted him No. 1 overall in 2005 and he became tasked with restoring the languishing franchise to glory.

“It’s crazy how well-prepared he is for everything,” Hornqvist said.

Of course it’s easy to say now, with the Penguins holding a 1-0 lead over San Jose heading into Wednesday night’s Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Fi-

nal. Their captain and two-time MVP seems restored to his place among the game’s elite after ending a seven-year drought between appearances in the NHL’s marquee event.

It’s a gap few saw coming when the 21-year-old Crosby held the Cup aloft in joy in Detroit back in 2009 after beating the Red Wings in seven taut games.

“Everybody thought (we’d) win 5-6-7 in the next 10 years,” recently retired Pittsburgh forward Pascal Dupuis said.

Everybody thought wrong. The burgeoning dynasty fizzled, with Crosby bearing the brunt of perpetual disappointment, accepting the blame for everything from his health to spotty goaltending to a top-heavy roster that lacked the depth necessary to make a deep postseason run.

“Look, this is his third final in his short career to this point, and that’s

pretty good,” said former Pittsburgh coach Ed Olczyk, who coached Crosby as a rookie in 2005-06. “Now, in saying that, there haven’t been many teams that have underachieved more than the Pittsburgh Penguins over the course of the last five or six years.”

A label Crosby took personally even as circumstances – some beyond his control, some not – made him struggle to shed it.

There was the protracted recovery from concussion-like symptoms that robbed him of two seasons in his prime. A series of meek playoff flameouts in which opponents found a way to stifle his brilliance.

“You just have to be able to put it all together at the right time,” Crosby said. “I don’t think we necessarily lacked those things in years we didn’t win. I think you just have to be able to put it together and come up with those big plays at timely times.”

OAKLAND, Calif. – Fresh charcoal gray NBA Finals cap on backward and wearing a wide grin, Stephen Curry summed up his wild, up-and-down postseason so far and reminded everybody he’s not close to done.

The MVP’s got his groove back, all right – looking healthy again at last after dealing with a troublesome ankle, right knee sprain that sidelined him and even a puffy elbow from an awkward dive into the stands.

“Now we’re four wins away from our goal, and that’s a pretty special accomplishment,” Curry said Monday night after his Golden State Warriors wrapped up the Western Conference finals by beating the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7.

Curry is taking the 73-win Warriors back to the NBA Finals with a shot at a second straight championship, his plan from the get-go.

Golden State’s ultimate goal of a repeat title has been in the works since Day 1, even if the Warriors’ chances of digging out of a big hole against Oklahoma City looked dire just last week.

His body beat up, Curry had no choice but to watch fellow Splash Brother Klay Thompson and others carry the Warriors for much of this postseason run while he worked his way back.

His teammates have come to expect nothing less, even when Curry’s body is hurting and speculation swirls about whether he is playing somewhere around 70 percent. He has learned to block out the chatter along the way, knowing that just comes with being the best.

“That’s really one thing that I admire about him. He’s a person that’s never going to change for anybody. He hasn’t changed to try to prove anything,” 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala said. “He just stayed true to himself.”

As vets leave, it’s Long’s time to lead

In the past 14 months, Bears general manager Ryan Pace has cut guard Matt Slauson, left tackle Jermon Bushrod and center Roberto Garza.

The three had combined to start 357 career games – 21 more than the Jacksonville Jaguars have played in their history.

So yes, there’s a leadership vacuum on the offensive line.

The Bears have the perfect player to fill it: the one who went to college with center Hroniss Grasu, recommended new right tackle Bobby Massie to the Bears after training with him, and knows what new guard Cody Whitehair must be feeling.

One with three Pro Bowl berths, at least two years left with the team and the personality to connect with his teammates. And whose coach, John Fox, said he’d “take 11 of him all across the board.”

Kyle Long, however, is hesitant to say his leadership status is changing.

But make no mistake: For the first time since the Bears drafted him in the first round in 2013, Long won’t have to defer to anyone in the room.

He could join quarterback Jay Cutler as a captain, represent the offensive line on the Bears’ leadership council, or both.

This is his time to lead.

Not that he looks at it that way.

“I can hold somebody accountable, they’ll hold me accountable,” said Long, who’s moving back to right guard this season. “We don’t miss reps in the weight room. If something happens on the field, it’s covered immediately.

NEW YORK – Verne Lundquist will call one more season of Southeastern Conference football for CBS before Brad Nessler takes over the sport’s highest-rated TV package.

AP sources: NFL moving Pro Bowl to Orlando in 2017

ORLANDO, Fla. –The NFL is moving the Pro Bowl from Honolulu to Orlando this season, three people with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The people spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because an announcement has not been made.

The NFL and ESPN have scheduled a news conference for Wednesday at ESPN Wide World of Sports at the Disney complex, during which the league will announce the move, according to a person with knowledge of the move. The game will be played at Camping World Stadium.

Bruschetta, 3 ways, for a satisfying picnic main dish There are few dishes more elemental and satisfying than bruschetta. A mainstay at many Italian restaurants, it’s an appetizer comprising slices of grilled bread adorned with any number of toppings. According to Italian cookbook author Marcella Hazan, bruschetta likely originated in ancient Rome. Olive growers who brought their produce there to be pressed would sample the flavor of the fresh-squeezed oil on toasted slices of bread. (The word is derived from the Roman verb bruscare, meaning “to roast over coals.”)

I like to make bruschetta on my stovetop grill at home during the colder months. It’s a winning accompaniment to just about any soup or stew and a reliable favorite with the family. Having recently come to the conclusion there was no good reason why this simple and tasty concoction should be limited to an appetizer or side dish, I have here chosen to cast bruschetta as the star of a summer picnic.

As noted, bruschetta is simple to make. But you need to work with high-quality ingredients if you want it to turn out beautifully. Start with a loaf of fresh and crusty rustic bread. Then brush each slice of bread with your very best extra-virgin olive oil before it heads for the grill. When the bread comes off the grill, and while it’s still hot, rub one side of each slice with a cut clove of garlic. Then top it off with a light sprinkling of sea salt. By the way, this technique works just as well using a grill pan in the kitchen as it does with a grill outdoors.

This recipe spells out three different toppings, all vaguely Mediterranean: a white bean salad with fresh fennel thickened with mashed beans so that the filling sticks to the bread; smoked salmon rillettes – finely-chopped salmon flavored with capers, lemon and fresh herbs and bound with sour cream; and a chopped Greek salad. Again, I recommend using your best extra-virgin olive oil for the dressings. Each topping yields roughly two cups, which should be ample to top four large slices of grilled bread.

But bruschetta is nothing if not basic, meaning that just about any filling you’d ordinarily put between two slices of bread also will work as a topping for bruschetta: egg salad, tuna salad, runny cheese, hummus, grilled vegetables, you name it. Just bring the toppings in jars to the picnic, step aside and watch everyone go for theirs. No one’s going to wonder where the sandwiches are when

Salmon Rillettes

Start to finish: 25 minutes Servings: 4

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh oregano 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper flakes (optional) Kosher salt

8 ounces smoked salmon, finely chopped 1/4 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons minced shallot 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives, tarragon or dill or a mix 2 tablespoons well-drained capers, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard Black pepper, to taste

In a bowl of ice and water, soak the onion for 15 minutes, drain and pat dry.

Drain and rinse the white beans and pat them dry. In a medium bowl, mash the beans using a potato masher, leaving about half in large pieces and the rest mashed. Add the onion, fennel, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, oregano, hot pepper flakes and salt to taste and stir well. Chill until ready to serve.

In a bowl, combine all the ingredients and stir gently until just combined. Chill until ready to serve.

1 cup coarsely chopped cherry tomatoes 1/2 cup 1/4-inch dice seedless cucumber 1/4 cup finely cubed or crumbled feta 1/3 cup coarsely chopped pitted Kalamata olives 1/4 cup chopped pepperoncini 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons shredded fresh basil Kosher salt and black pepper to taste

In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients and stir gently until just combined. Chill until ready to serve.

Start to finish: 10 minutes Servings: 4 12 slices 1/2-inch thick rustic bread Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing the bread 1 garlic clove, halved Kosher salt Preheat a grill or grill pan over high heat.

Brush both sides of the bread slices with the oil.

Add the bread to the preheated grill, reduce the heat to medium, and cook until bread is nicely browned on both sides (about 1 minute a side).

Remove the bread from the pan and, while it’s still hot, rub one side of each slice with a cut clove of garlic, then sprinkle it very lightly with kosher salt.

This salad gets its rich umami flavor from a cool combination of miso paste and nutritional yeast (not to be confused with brewer’s yeast). The croutons are back in for this recipe, but I just leave them out for my gluten-free daughter. To turn this salad into a fully vegan meal, top with nuts, seeds, lentils, white beans or tofu. And a note to my carnivore friends: Don’t let the word vegan scare you off this

recipe. It’s also great topped with a few ounces of meat.

Vegan Caesar Salad Start to finish: 20 minutes Servings: 6

1/3 cup raw unsalted cashews Boiling water 1/4 cup toasted walnuts 1/4 cup nutritional yeast flakes 1/4 teaspoon granulated garlic 1/4 cup lemon juice

In a small bowl, combine the cashews and enough boiling water to cover them. Let sit for several minutes.

Meanwhile, in a blender, combine the walnuts, nutritional yeast and granulated garlic.

Pulse until the mixture has the texture of sand.

Pour into a small bowl and set aside.

Drain the cashews and transfer them to the blender. Add the lemon juice, fresh garlic, mustard, olive oil, miso, pepper and cool water.

Blend until the mixture is mostly smooth. Taste and adjust seasonings.

In a large bowl, toss the lettuce with the dressing, then top with the bread cubes and the ground walnut mixture.

I’ve heard many restaurant chefs despise making Caesar salads, but I don’t understand why. Who wouldn’t love making lemony-cheesy-black-pepper-salad dreams come true?

So my resourceful little self always has had a solid Caesar salad game going at home. My original recipe was rooted in the classic for years: raw egg yolk, umami-laden anchovies, nutty Parmesan cheese, tart lemon juice. I then top that basic Caesar salad with almost any protein to turn it into a truly satisfying meal. Steak, shrimp or chicken work well, but so do turkey meatballs, roasted pork tenderloin and – my secret weapon – just about every kind of canned fish available.

Over time, I’ve adapted and adjusted my beloved Caesar salad recipe to account for changes in my family.

When I was pregnant, I avoided raw eggs. My daughter’s gluten intolerance kicked the sourdough croutons to the curb. And my vegetarian niece and nephew had me searching for a worthy umami substitute for anchovies.

Recently, I faced my greatest challenge: a completely vegan Caesar salad for some dinner guests. No Parmesan

This tale depicts the misadventures of canines with special powers.

Originally, the idea for the book began as an assignment for a writing class. The girls knew they were onto something big.

Kayleigh’s father helped them publish the book through Amazon. Currently, the book is available for Kindle devices, and plans are being developed for it to be sold in area bookstores. The girls plan to turn the book into a series.

28 Biofeedback can relieve tension headaches Dear Dr. K: I suffer from awful tension headaches. Could mind-body techniques help to prevent or relieve them?

Dear Reader: Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. Many people describe the sensation as a dull tightness or pressure that feels like a band wrapped tightly around the head.

Unlike migraine headaches, a tension headache is steady. It doesn’t throb. Also, it typically starts by hurting around the entire head. In contrast, migraine headaches tend to start on just one side of the head, often near the temple or eye. Mind-body therapies can help with tension headaches.

Tension headaches probably are the result of abnormal pain sensors in the tissues of the scalp. These sensors appear to be more sensitive, and more likely to send pain signals to the brain. Also, in people with repeated tension headaches, the pain-sensing parts of the brain also seem to become more sensitive to pain signals. Why all this happens is uncertain.

Mind-body therapies include meditation, relaxation techniques, yoga, hypnosis, stress management and biofeedback. These therapies lower stress, which is a widely accepted trigger of headaches. They also promote healthier lifestyle habits, such as getting adequate sleep, which can help to keep headaches at bay.

About half of all headache sufferers use some type of mind-body technique to alleviate the pain. Which techniques will be most useful for you will depend on your personal preferences, but in general, for tension headaches, relaxation techniques and muscle biofeedback seem to help the most: • Relaxation techniques: These can relax your muscles and ease tension, which should help reduce headache pain. No single relaxation technique works better than the others. Experiment until you find the

We’ve been dating two years and I want him to be my husband, but at the same time I want to live life. I’m not even 21 yet, and I haven’t experienced life. Since moving in, Chelsea has decided she’s not responsible for any part of the household duties, nor does she have to sustain herself as we previously had agreed. I work full-time, pay all the bills and provide everything. I also do the cooking and cleaning and pay for Chelsea’s cigarettes and personal items. She claims she wants to be a stay-at-home mom – although she is more “stay at home” than “mom.” This infuriates me and has led to many arguments.

I have tried reasoning with her and talking rationally; nothing works. It has turned into one shouting match after another. What can I do to set her straight while not putting our son at risk of suffering from all of this fallout?

Throwing her out obviously is not the answer.

In bridge, you try never to guess, but sometimes it is unavoidable. For example, look at the North hand.

South shows a balanced hand with a good 22 to 24 points. Should North pass, raise to three no-trump, or hunt out a 4-4 heart fit by using Stayman?

It would be cowardly to pass.

It could be best to raise straight to three no-trump. If South does not have four hearts, North avoids giving the defenders extra information about South’s hand. Here, though, the defenders ought to take five spade tricks to defeat three notrump. So, let’s assume North steers South into four hearts.

West leads the spade king. East overtakes with his ace and returns the two. After West wins two more tricks in the suit, what should South do if West continues with either a diamond or another spade?

South has 10 tricks (four hearts, four diamonds and two clubs) if he can draw trumps without loss. He must not overlook the power of his heart 10. He wins the diamond shift, cashes the heart ace, and plays a heart to dummy’s king. When the bad split comes to light, declarer finesses his heart 10, draws the last trump, and claims.

If West perseveres with a fourth spade, South must ruff it low in the dummy.
