jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After the Northern Illinois University’s football team won its game at Purdue in 2009, it took Huskies fans Bob Smith and Tom Bonnevier about an hour to get back to their car.

It came with the territory traveling with Diesel, the beloved Northern Illinois live mascot, Diesel. Diesel, a Siberian husky, frequently drew attention from fans and requests for pictures before retiring in 2013 and passing away last September after losing a battle with lymphoma.

Now Smith and Bonnevier are a part of a small group raising money to put up a statue outside Huskie Stadium of Diesel’s most iconic moment. They’re hoping to reach the goal of $25,000 in time to commission the statue and unveil it at the 2017 football home opener against Boston College.

“Tom took [Diesel] anywhere they let him in,” Smith said of Bonnevier, who was Diesel’s owner. “We traveled all over the place and everybody loved Diesel.”

Donations can be made by searching for the project, called “The Diesel Memorial Project,” on the website gofundme.com.

If the goal is met – a little more than $5,000 of the $25,000 needed has been raised as of Monday night – the statue will be of Diesel sitting with his left paw up, a pose that became famous when ESPN showed the real-life Siberian husky give a high-five to a Northern Illinois cheerleader after a touchdown in a game against Ball State in 2013 .

The idea originated with a group of friends on a Northern Illinois message board. Renee Bemis, who has more than three decades of experience as a sculptor, will create of the statue – which she said could take about a year to complete, including the creation of the mold and the bronzing process before it is handed over to a foundry.

The statue also will be on a pedestal, allowing it to be moved to other special events involving Northern Illinois.

Smith, 66, said it was a long process to get the idea approved by all the necessary parties at the university, which included university President Doug Baker. Northern Illinois Athletic Director Sean Frazier would not comment on the matter, saying he was not involved in the project.

It is believed the statue would be placed between the west grandstand of Huskie Stadium and the Chessick Center – allowing any passersby the opportunity to high-five the bronze Diesel.

He also praised Bemis and Alberta Solfisburg of the NIU Foundation for helping push the idea through.

While the project has had several people make donations up to $100, Smith said he knows the project will also need some bigger support.

“We’re realistic about it and we’ll need some donors to write some big checks,” Smith said.

“But we’re fully confident we can do it.”

Smith said the project is in good hands with Bemis doing the sculpting. She created the pack of three running Huskies on the east side of the Chessick Center.

Bemis said she’s already created a miniature version – around 6 to 8 inches tall – of the statue that turned out well. She expects the finished version to be about 3 feet, 4 inches tall from him sitting to the top of his extended paw.

Although her previous work for Northern Illinois – the pack of three Huskies – was more general in nature, she said the distinctness of having it be Diesel in his iconic pose will help.

“It’s pretty clear what I need to do – where he put his feet, how his head was tilted, what he looks like – so it makes it slightly easier,” she said.

Diesel was the Northern Illinois mascot for nine years before retiring with the title of mascot emeritus after the 2013 season. He still attended games – including the Huskies’ season-opening win over UNLV in 2015 right before his death – but a new husky, Mission, took over the duties as the new living mascot.

CELEBRATING MEMORIAL DAY DeKalb pays respect to those who gave their lives in service

news@daily-chronicle.com Robert Moga lost his older brother, Rome, at age 20 in World War II. So every Memorial Day, the 84-year old Big Rock resident and Navy veteran honors his brother and countless others who died while in uniform.

“Memorial Day is a very important holiday and it’s emotional for me,” said Moga, who attended DeKalb’s Memorial Day parade with his family. “I saw my mom and dad cry when the telegraph came to my house [when my brother died]. It was awful and I’ll never forget that.”

It was in the spirit of commemoration that Moga and hundreds of other DeKalb County residents honored the fallen and those still in uniform at the parade and Memorial Day ceremony at the Ellwood House on Monday morning.

Bands from Huntley Middle School, Clinton Rosette Middle School and DeKalb High School provided the festive music, while Scout groups, local firefighters and police and veterans’ groups marched. After the short parade, attendees gathered at the Ellwood House for a ceremony featuring keynote speaker, AmVet’s Department of Illinois senior vice commander Richard Shea.

He urged the audience to remember the “ordinary people who responded in extraordinary ways in extreme times.”

“American men and women have been answering the call of duty, and today, troops are still answering that call,” Shea said in his remarks. “Memorial Day is not a day to honor the living. On the contrary, it’s to honor the dead; many so very young who gave their lives for us. Memorial Day is a time to remember and celebrate those no longer with us. Our gathering is one small way to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.”

Earl Hansen of DeKalb was happy to see the large turnout. The Army veteran who served in Vietnam hopes the parade and ceremony give people a better perspective of military service.

“This needs to be done. If you’ve never been shot at, you don’t know what it’s like [to be shot at],” he said.

“I just want to thank everybody for caring about the veterans and caring about the country. This is very emo-

Pete Vander-Bleek of DeKalb wanted to bring his children to the parade so they could learn more about what Memorial Day really means.

“We come every year. It keeps the focus on what Memorial Day is about.

It’s not just a day off. It’s important to appreciate the veterans,” he said.

Heather Tomlinson of Sycamore said she brought her children because it was good for them to see the parade, because it can teach them respect.

“This helps us remember why we’re here in the first place, and this is good for the community,” she said.

University Veteran’s Association were proud to march in the parade and hand out flags to spectators.

“It’s to commemorate those who’ve lost lives serving our country and to remember them,” said Matthew Galloway, a Navy veteran and Northern Illinois University student.”A lot of college kids don’t have an in-depth realization about those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

The Firefighters Highland Guard, which is the pipe band for the DeKalb Fire Department, played traditional military marches and hymns along the route. Tom Murphy, a member of the group, said playing in the parade is important because it’s a way for them to

honor those who died.

“It’s important to remember the meaning of the parade. And this draws the community out to enjoy a beautiful day and honor veterans’ sacrifice,” he said.

The parade ended on a somber note, as members of the DeKalb Interfaith Network for Peace and Justice held up photos of those who died in Iraq and Afghanistan while they marched.

Those photos were strung along the Ellwood House lawn after the parade.

John Omerod, a Navy veteran and member of the group, said the purpose of the photos was to put a face on those who died in service.

“People were a little taken back when we first started marching with the photos a few years ago. No one applauded. But now they do,” he said. “It’s a respectful way to bring up the parade.

It’s a somber ending, but that’s the way it should be. Bands are nice, flags and fire trucks are great, but that’s not the purpose of Memorial Day.”

Avid cyclists riding cross-country to raise money for Shabbona Pathway

SHABBONA – When celebrating a 50th birthday, most people have a party. When Linda Novotny and Wendy Schnorr of Shabbona turned 50, they took part in RAGBRAI, a seven-day bicycle ride across Iowa.

Six years later, the two friends and Novotny’s daughter, Vicki, will ride from Astoria, Oregon, to Washington, D.C. The three women will start their approximately 3,500-mile trip on Sunday, June 5. They plan on averaging 60 miles a day, reaching the end of their journey in the beginning of August.

The women’s cross-country bicycle trip will raise money to help build the Shabbona Pathway. To fundraise, they created a Go Fund Me page, https:// www.gofundme.com/3girlsonabike.

Schnorr and Novotny were part of the pathway’s initial committee, which plans to create a 3.1-mile multiuse community trail connecting downtown Shabbona to more than 30 miles of trails within Shabbona Lake State Park.

The path also would connect to Indian Creek schools, Chief Shabbona Forest Preserve, Indian Oaks Country Club and Lions Park.

“The pathway will be a safer route for the community,” Novotny said. “It would get kids to school safely and would be an economic boost for downtown. There are a lot of runners in the community, and

they always run in the road. Even as a bicyclist on the road, it’s dangerous. There are a lot of safety issues.”

More than $25,000 has been raised for the Shabbona Pathway already, and the committee plans on applying for federal and state grants. The committee’s ultimate goal is to connect the state park and forest preserve trails and the Shabbona Pathway to all of DeKalb County.

Novotny and Schnorr first met through a mutual friend who knew that the two had a passion for biking. Novotny rode her first 100 miles in one day when she was 14 years old. Schnorr took her first bicycling vacation with her son about eight years ago, and has since bicycled in England and around the San Francisco Bay area. Novotny helped

Schnorr train for a bicycling vacation, and the two have been biking together ever since.

The women have been training for their trip, spending hours at a time on their bikes. Novotny spent the winter in Florida to practice biking. Schnorr has practiced riding her bike in cold, rainy weather. Schnorr, a second-grade teacher at Ashton Franklin Elementary School in Franklin Grove, challenged her students to earn points for reading to compete with her miles of biking.

“It was fun to see how motivated they were when they were trying to beat me,” Schnorr said. “It is a 55-mile ride for me to get to and from school, and I would do it a few times each year. My kids always beat me even when I rode over 50 miles

a week to keep up with them. It gave me good training, and they became better readers for it.”

The women’s cross-country journey will follow Adventure Cycling Association’s Lewis and Clark Bicycle Trail, which is made of paved roads, bike paths, unpaved rail-trails and short sections of gravel roads. The route winds through cities and rural areas and various terrains, including 6,000-foot-tall mountains and the flat plains of prairie states.

The women already have most of their waterproof bags packed. They’re taking along a tent, camping gear, a small solar panel to charge electronics, cameras, a GPS and maps. Since the women will be exposed to different temperatures and weather, they will bring arm warmers and foot covers for cold, snowy climates, jackets for the rain and shorts and T-shirts for hot weather.

They will stay at a hotel at least once a week and will use www.warmshowers.org, a website that gives traveling cyclists free rooms, camping space and showers.

“I’m looking forward to traveling by bike, of seeing the beauty of our country,” Schnorr said. “Last year, while biking around San Francisco, I saw millions of grape vines before I got to Napa Valley.

We know that there will be things that we’ll have to deal with: fixing our bikes, the weather and temperature. We’re up to the challenge.”

Born: July 10, 1923; in Sycamore, IL Died: May 27, 2016; in Huntley, IL Jerome W. Deutsch, 92, of Sun City Huntley, formerly of Hampshire, passed away peacefully Friday morning May 27, 2016, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born July 10, 1923, in Sycamore, the son of Michael and Cathryne (Barthel) Deutsch. He was a 1941 graduate of Hampshire High School and was a longtime farmer in Hampshire.

Jerome was an active member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and served many years as a cemetery board trustee for both Hampshire Township Cemeteries and St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Gloria M. Cirrincione, whom he married June 28, 1952, at the St. Laurence Catholic Church in Elgin. Also surviving are his four loving children, Michael (Vicki) Deutsch, Nancy (Mike Smart) Deutsch, Thomas Deutsch, and Joanne (Paul) Belonax; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Anita (the late Bill) Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his daughter and son-in-law, Susan (Michael) McKay; and granddaughter, Jennifer McKay. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 297 Jefferson Ave., Hampshire. Burial will follow in the St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the St. Charles Borromeo Church with prayers and remem-

Sharon was born on July 23, 1939, in Ottawa to Wilbur and Eleanor (Swanson) Thomas. She married Robert F. Trumbo on September 18, 1960 in DeKalb. She was a member of Prairie Lakes Golf Course.

Fire causes damage to DeKalb home

DeKALB – Four fire departments responded to a fire in the garage at a home in the 500 block of Bush Street on Saturday.

The first firefighters on the scene, from the DeKalb Fire Department, arrived around 1:05 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the garage, the door to which was partially open, according to a news release. DeKalb Police and the homeowner were trying to put the fire out with a garden hose, the release said.

The garage door was forced open and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within about 5 minutes, the release said.

The fire started on rack storage in the garage, and its cause is undetermined pending further investigation, the news release said, and caused about $25,000 worth of damage to the garage. The homeowners were not displaced due to the fire, the release said.

Firefighters from Sycamore, Malta and Genoa-Kingston fire departments assisted on the scene.

Leoni said he hopes to keep the listing updated weekly.

“We wanted people to be able to get ahold of us via the website and we wanted people to be able to know the status of their complaints via the website,” Leoni said. “People would call, [inspectors would] start working on it, and then they’d call back and say, ‘I called weeks ago and nothing’s been done.’ This way, they can see.”

The online data show one common complaint is about snow and ice removal – a lot of people don’t realize city code requires people to shovel the walks in front of their property, Leoni said.

Rubbish and trash left behind when tenants move out or are evicted is another common issue. Leoni said often large amounts of rubbish will be left behind on the parkway or elsewhere on a property when people move out. City officials are now acting quickly to have this trash hauled away so it doesn’t pose a hazard to

the neighborhood, Leoni said. The property owner gets the bill.

Complaints from tenants are far less common, Leoni said.

City records show only a handful of complaints about living conditions, many related to broken heat or pest infestation.

Complaints are also sometimes made related to mold, but there’s no ordinance that addresses mold, Leoni said.

Generally, Leoni said, property owners will be sent warning letters or door hangers when their property is seen to be in violation. Often, they’ll be given three weeks to either fix the issue or submit an action plan to fix the issue.

“Typically with any tenant complaint we ask the tenant if they’ve called the landlord because most landlords will just take care of stuff,” Leoni said. “There’s nothing about this process that’s meant to be adversarial, and I’d really like to stress we’re not interested in the fine aspect.”

The sunny days and regular spring rains have been great for growing grass – and when property owners don’t have it mowed down, Carl Leoni hears about it.

Leoni, the head of the city of DeKalb’s Crime Free Housing Bureau, said so far this year there have been 78 complaints about tall grass and weeds on private property. In about five of those cases, the city has mowed the grass itself.

DeKalb’s city code requires property owners to mow any vegetation on their property that grows higher than 8 inches.

“Last year we had 250 complaints (about tall grass and weeds),” said Leoni, who has headed the Crime Free Housing Bureau since it was formed in 2013. “This year we’re expecting more.”

DeKalb Fire Department to buy training tower

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb Fire Department secured a $239,000 federal grant to buy a special mobile tower that will give firefighters a feel for fighting a blaze in high-rise buildings.

The city of DeKalb provided a $21,727 match.

Having the mobile tower gives the fire department permanent training equipment, as well as a tool to learn how to fight fires in taller structures. Officials said the DeKalb area has some 30 buildings that would be considered high-rise.

“We have now a training facility that will allow the firefighters to train whenever they want. It allows them maximum flexibility so they can ... do their own specialized training as a company. They can identify and perceived weaknesses and they can go ahead and they can strengthen those weaknesses,” said Jeff McMaster, DeKalb deputy fire chief.

The money for the mobile tower came from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The annually awarded grants are “for critically needed resources to equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operations efficiencies, foster interoperability, and support community resilience,” according to FEMA. DeKalb’s fire department had, for at least the last two years, unsuccessfully applied for money through the program to get an additional ladder fire truck. McMaster said in 2014, the decision was made to go for the mobile training tower instead.

“The fire department severely lacks training facilities,” McMaster said. “In fact, there is no training facilities in DeKalb County.”

Historically, the fire department has relied on donations of houses and other structure that were to eventually be demolished to use in training firefighters. Fire personnel used the structures for drills on fire extinguishing, search and rescue, and other common fire emergency scenarios, McMaster explained.

Although the home donations are unpredictable and sometimes sporadic, he said, even with now having the mobile tower, the homes are still needed.

The mobile tower is about the height of a four-story building.

It is equipped with a four-landing staircase, six windows, a smoke machine, standpipe and sprinkler systems and a confined space simulator, among other critical training features.

McMaster said the tower is currently housed at the DeKalb Municipal Airport, but can be dropped off at any of the department’s three stations to conduct training drills.

Firefighters have not begun training in the mobile tower yet, but the deputy chief said they will start in the coming weeks. DFD is looking

for a permanent storage space for the tower, especially since it has to be stored indoors during the winter months.

DeKalb fire officials plan to allow other fire departments in the county to use the tower for training.

“Right now, DeKalb (county) fire departments, even though we work very well together, we don’t train together. This is really going to help us to strengthen that bond,” McMaster said.

McMaster said the collaboration makes the mobile tower even more valuable to the community, and it means more residents and area businesses could benefit.

Hope of budget deal before deadline dims

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers signaled Monday they won’t have a budget deal before a key deadline, leaving the state hurtling toward another fiscal year without a spending plan and bringing further uncertainty to public schools, colleges and social services providers.

Leaders from both parties met with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday in another attempt at compromise, exiting his office to deliver remarks that all but guaranteed they won’t find agreement before they adjourn their spring session Tuesday night.

“The bottom line for the taxpayers of Illinois is that as of tomorrow there will be no balanced budget,” Republican Senate Leader Christine Radogno said.

The meeting happened just moments after Democrats showed their force by overriding a Rauner veto on a proposal to lower Chicago’s pension payments for police and firefighters.

Lawmakers can still pass a budget after Tuesday, but it will be a heavy lift requiring three-fifths support from each chamber in what’s expected to be a bruising election year. A budget passed before the deadline would need only a simple majority.

Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan said after the meeting there was a “good exchange of ideas,” the brightest outlook he’s given yet after a discussion with Republican

leaders and the governor in recent weeks.

But even though he reported progress from legislative working groups trying to get a budget compromise, Madigan said the House is prepared to continue working through June.

“If there’s no agreement tomorrow night, I would ask the governor to keep his working groups functioning on a regular schedule because the House is going to ... schedule ourselves to be here every Wednesday through June starting next week,” Madigan said.

His chamber has already passed a budget that Rauner has said he’ll veto if it passes the Senate because it is $7 billion out of balance. By the Democrats’ design, that $40 billion spending plan includes funding for schools in an attempt to force Rauner’s hand; a veto would allow them to blame the governor if schools can’t open this fall.

The 11-month budget standoff on a budget that should’ve taken effect July 1 makes Illinois the only state in the country without a budget for the current fiscal year.

Already, that’s forced colleges and universities to lay off staff and decimated social service programs across the state.

About 90 percent of state’s spending is on autopilot because of court orders requiring funds for crucial services such as Medicaid and salaries for state workers. But those decrees don’t cover higher education institutions and some social service providers.

Illinois lawmakers propose study of lead in state water

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers are commissioning a report from the state’s Environmental Protection Agency in an effort to better monitor lead levels in state water supplies.

A resolution the House Environment Committee approved Monday would require the state agency to conduct a study of lead in Illinois drinking water and publish results online. The agency would present a report to Gov. Bruce Rauner and the state Legislature between Sept.

1 and Dec. 31.

Chicago gets pension relief as Rauner veto overridden

SPRINGFIELD – Chicago taxpayers will save $1 billion on police and fire pension costs in the short term under a law the General Assembly approved Monday after some House Republicans bucked their governor, who had railed against it as a ridiculous expansion of the Illinois’ growing pension hole.

The House voted, 72-43, to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of the savings plan, which trumps state law that required the city to pump $4.62 billion into retirement accounts for police officers and firefighters through 2020.

The huge payments could have forced a $300 million property tax increase, Mayor Rahm Emanuel had warned. But Rauner countered that shorting payments will cost an extra $18.6 billion in interest during the next 40 years.

The House quickly followed the Senate in reversing the first-term governor, a businessman who has pounced on the issue of Illinois’ woeful pension funding – in municipal as well as state accounts – since he was a candidate.

CHICAGO – A police spokeswoman said two officers were hospitalized after a man set himself and a building on fire during a Chicago street festival.

Officer Michelle Tannehill told The Associated Press the officers were being treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The man also was in custody at a hospital, and the extent of his injuries wasn’t immediately known.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in the southwestern part of the city a few blocks from the National Museum of Mexican Art.

Firefighter accused of using cigarettes in arsons

FREEPORT – The defense attorney for a northern Illinois firefighter accused of starting five fires said his client will have a mental evaluation.

Twenty-year-old Kenneth Grabow of Orangeville is next due in court July 7. He’s accused of tossing lit cigarettes to spark at least two of the blazes.

Grabow joined the volunteer Orangeville Fire Department in August. He’s charged with arson and criminal damage to property in connection with fires set at three barns, a shed and an abandoned home in the Orangeville area between April 14 and 19. Estimates are that each fire caused more than $10,000 damage.

Defense attorney Robert Fagan told The (Freeport) Journal-Standard that he doesn’t know whether Grabow is fit to stand trial or has any mental issues. Fagan said “that’s why we’re having him evaluated.”

22-year-old Illinois man dies in dirt bike accident

HEYWORTH – Authorities in central Illinois say a 22-year-old man died in a dirt bike accident.

Authorities identified the victim as Andrew Johnson of Heyworth. He was found Saturday afternoon in a creek near a wooded area in Heyworth.

McLean County Coroner Kathy Davis told The (Bloomington) Pantagraph that Johnson was unconscious from a blunt force head injury when he entered the water. Preliminary autopsy results indicate Johnson died of drowning because of the accident.

Toxicology results are pending. The McLean County Coroner’s Office and McLean County Sheriff’s Department are investigating.

Trump sits critically behind Clinton in digital campaign

PHILADELPHIA – Donald Trump trails Hillary Clinton by months, even years, in using fast-evolving digital campaigning to win over voters, data specialists working with the GOP say. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee has dismissed the science that defines 21st-century political campaigns, a tool that President Barack Obama used effectively in winning two terms and the Clinton campaign has worked on for nearly a year.

And while it is too early to tell whether the late start signals trouble for Trump, it illustrates the difference between Trump’s proudly outsider campaign and the institutional knowledge within Clinton’s.

“She’s been able to prepare a general election campaign since the beginning,” said Alex Lundry, former senior technology adviser to Mitt Romney’s 2012 Republican presidential campaign. “That head start in terms of time is extraordinarily valuable.”

Precision digital-marketing data, a person’s online footprints, have become an electoral science that Democrats have dominated, and Republicans have chased, for a decade. Campaigns used the data at first simply to track supporters.

The information now guides a range of decisions, such as the types and volume of advertising, where to deploy campaign staff to mobilize voters and where a candidate should visit.

Trump’s team has been unclear about its use of data in the general election.

Trump told The Associated Press this month

the tool was “overrated” and he planned “limited” data use during the general election, although his campaign has worked with firms and a small in-house staff to track voters during the primaries.

Later, senior adviser Rick Wiley, who was hired in April, suggested Trump would run a “state of the art” campaign and use data strategically, relying on Trump’s own list of supporters, the Republican National Committee’s voter list and a data service financed largely by the RNC called Data Trust.

“All of the data points – whatever they are – our ability to harvest that data is invaluable,” said Wiley, the RNC’s former executive director. He has since left the campaign, after what a source close to the matter said were disagreements with Trump loyalists about who should lead campaign efforts in key states. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity, lacking authorization to discuss internal campaign matters publicly.

Given how Republicans have long trailed Democrats in digital campaigning, Trump’s grudging talk and Wiley’s departure hardly signal a rush to catch up. Trump spent more than $1 million in April on campaign paraphernalia such as caps, T-shirts and signs. Even as he was effectively seizing the nomination, he spent less than a third of that amount on data and related functions such as telemarketing.

Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign revolutionized the way technology could be used to identify and keep track of supporters who attended his campaign events and gave money to his candidacy.

He had tried to expedite his screening by arriving three hours early and checking his baggage. “What can you do?” he said with a shrug. “I’ve never been in a line like this for security, ever.”

At California’s Sacramento International Airport, an early morning photo posted on Twitter showed a line into the airport stretching all the way back to a parking garage. The dispatcher said that was taken during the airport’s busiest part of the day and the line had shrunk by late morning.

MIAMI – Travelers who had braced for long lines and long waits were instead moving through most U.S. airports fairly quickly Monday, as the busy Memorial Day travel weekend drew to close.

“Honestly it wasn’t too bad,” said Kendra Morehead of Wooster, Ohio, who flew from Detroit to Denver for a conference. “I got to the airport an hour and a half early, but security only took like 15 minutes.”

However, the airlines weren’t ready to say “mission accomplished” yet, as it’s just the beginning of the busy summer travel season.

“Things have been going pretty well so far this weekend and we are working hard to make sure that we have no repeat of what we saw in Chicago,” American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein said, referring to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, which had some of the worst screening problems in recent weeks.

The TSA began deploying extra canine teams to the busiest airports months ago. The dogs can screen large groups of passengers for explosives, eliminating the need to remove shoes and laptops, TSA spokesman Mike England said last week.

The extra dogs were concentrated at the nation’s largest airports, but they weren’t used for all screenings.

Many travelers still had to observe the usual procedures. England said the extra dogs would remain at security checkpoints well beyond the Memorial Day weekend.

At Miami International Airport, Fernando Del Gaudio arrived three hours early for a flight home to Buenos Aires, Argentina, only to find that

wove through ropes directing them toward the main TSA checkpoint Monday afternoon. In recent weeks, passengers at the same checkpoint inside the world’s busiest airport have waited in single-file lines stretching into the airport’s atrium or back to baggage claim.

Reese McCranie, a spokesman for the Atlanta airport, said security wait times averaged 15 minutes or less throughout the weekend, aided by 30 TSA officers on loan from smaller airports and about 34 new officers who started work a week ago.

“Memorial Day is really a dress rehearsal for the rest of the summer,” McCranie said. “We’re hopeful that we’re working toward a similar experience for all other major travel periods.”

At Orlando International Airport, extra airport staff was helping keep wait times to just over seven minutes on Monday, airport spokeswoman Carolyn Fennell said.

The airport hired 27 extra customer service staff and added more disposal bins for prohibited items to help smooth out the security screening process, Fennell said. More than 600,000 travelers were expected to pass through Orlando from Friday to Tuesday, and 483,000 had already come through by Monday afternoon, Fennell said.

At JFK Airport in New York City, where a computer outage caused massive check-in delays on Sunday, officials and passengers said things were much better Monday for most travelers.

But not for everyone.

Bibi Ali, a banker from Queens, said she arrived extra early, fearing she might miss her flight because of security lines. “I was there early and it was one hour waiting in line” she said. “The flight is not bad, just the line, it’s hectic.”

NEW YORK – Nearly 40,000 striking Verizon employees will return to work Wednesday after reaching a tentative contract agreement that includes 1,300 new call center jobs and nearly 11 percent in raises over four years but also makes health care plan changes to save the company money, the company and unions said Monday.

The pact, subject to approval by union members, stands to end one of the largest strikes in the U.S. in recent years.

Workers and Verizon Communications Inc. had reached an agreement in principle Friday, but hadn’t released details or a date for the workers’ return. The strike began in midApril. The Communications Workers of America and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers unions, which both represent the strikers, called the deal a victory for American workers.

“We are turning the tide from cutbacks against working people to building a stronger labor movement and strengthening the power of working Americans,” Dennis G. Trainor, vice president of the union’s District 1 in the Northeast, said in a statement. The IBEW said it protected American jobs amid concern about concern about work moving overseas.

New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. said it was a good deal for workers, customers and the telecom giant alike.

“This will allow our business to be more flexible and competitive,” chief administrative officer Marc Reed said in a statement.

Union members will vote on the deal after returning to work.

center jobs, the tentative agreement includes $1,250 in signing bonuses and health care reimbursements for new workers, a 25 percent increase in the number of unionized crews maintaining Verizon’s utility poles in New York state, and three 1 percent increases in pensions, which Verizon had proposed to freeze, the CWA said.

It also includes a first-ever contract for wireless retail store workers, affecting 70.

The deal also entails changes that Verizon says will save significant money, such as adopting Medicare Advantage plans – private health insurance contracted with the government-sponsored Medicare program – rather than costlier insurance. The tentative agreement also increases flexibility to route customer service calls from one call center to another, the company said.

Installers, customer service employees, repairmen and other landline and cable workers in nine Eastern states and Washington, D.C., have worked without a contract since August.

During the strike, other workers have stepped in, but there were some delays in installations of Verizon’s Fios fiber-optic service.

The unions said they were striking because Verizon wanted to freeze pensions, make layoffs easier and rely more on contract workers. Verizon said it had high health care costs for its unionized workers, a group that has shrunk as Verizon sold off large chunks of its wireline unit and focused on its mobile business, which was not unionized. It also wanted the union workers, around one-fifth of its U.S. workforce, to agree to move around to different regions when needed, which

the union opposed.

The strike made its way into the presidential campaign. Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton visited strikers outside a Verizon store in midtown Manhattan, and rival Bernie Sanders cheered workers on a picket line in Brooklyn.

But the walkout was also complicated by allegations that strikers in Delaware intimidated and harassed non-union replacement workers.

Union locals said any problems were isolated incidents not sanctioned by labor leaders; a Delaware judge said Thursday he felt the unions had “a causal role” but declined a Verizon request to hold them in contempt of a court order on permissible strike activities.

Verizon workers last went on strike in August 2011, when about 45,000 were off the job for about two weeks.

As the school year comes to a close and graduation season is upon us, it’s time to think about what’s next.

For those children graduating from kindergarten, they are thinking about becoming a big kid. Full days of school, getting homework and listing off a number for their grade instead of a letter – pretty exciting stuff.

Those graduating from eighth grade are looking to change schools and move into a different position from the top of their current school to the bottom of the pecking order in high school. They’ll have new opportunities, new friends, a new building and a new daily routine.

This can be an exciting time to finally do what you want or a realization that you relied on your parents more than you ever realized. It could be starting a new job or taking classes while staying home.

College graduation provides a new starting point for what the rest of your life holds. Finding a job to live on your own, exploring your next academic goal, or possibly transitioning to the next phase of your career.

Regardless of what you are graduating from, the question is always, “What’s next?” It’s not always an easy question to answer as you try to find your way. Ideas of what you had hoped to do upon graduation may have changed or the world has changed in a way that steered you in another direction.

Twenty-two members of the DeKalb Leadership Academy will graduate next week and are looking at ways to make an impact. The class has developed projects to help make the community better than when they started. Each group will report on what they accomplished at the graduation. Funds were raised to support Proudly DeKalb’s efforts. New connections were made and our community will continue to be stronger because of what this group has done and will do going forward.

Just as with the other graduations described, new people will fill these roles and start this process all over again in the fall. It’s exciting to look ahead and think what’s next and what we can accomplish as a community. Even though you might not be graduating, I ask you to think about what’s next that you can do to make this a better community.

SYCAMORE – A new restaurant serving up dishes made with locally grown ingredients and prepared by a local couple could open in the city’s downtown this September.

Andrea and Stewart Hepker, a married couple and culinary team, plan to open their first restaurant, Monocot, in the formerly vacant space at 366 W. State St., Sycamore, near the intersection of California and State streets. The restaurant’s ever-changing menu will remain faithful to the seasonality of local food, beer and wine, Stewart Hepker said.

“Our food is purely just Midwestern, so it kind of draws influence from all the immigrants who came here,” he said. “... It’s really just kind of the melting pot of cultural cuisine.”

The restaurant’s name is derived from a group of flowering plants called Monocotyledones, the seeds of which produce ingredients such as wheat, barley, rice, onions, garlic, sugarcane, forage grasses and corn.

Although Andrea Hepker’s background is in French cuisine, which she studied while earning her a culinary arts degree from Kendall College, the restaurant will keep a “core menu” of favorites such as burgers and fries, Stewart Hepker said.

The restaurant’s versatility doesn’t stop at food, either.

“We are just as much into beer and wine as we are food,” Stewart Hepker said. “With our beer, we don’t want to just have 10 IPAs on tap.

We want to have a diversity on tap.”

For now, Monocot will likely operate as a dinner-only sit-down restaurant, while the owners get a feel for the business and its clientele.

“Really what we’re looking for is a funky, fun date-night spot,” Stewart Hepker said. “It’s

The 174-year-old building across State from the former Jane Fargo Hotel has long had vacant space. The building itself was once a hotel and has historic roots in the city – ones the Hepkers don’t plan on demolishing.

“When we found that building, it was just a fantasy,” Stewart Hepker said.

The storefronts outside will remain the same, with just minor renovations planned for the interior of the 2,100-square-foot building.

Until the restaurant’s anticipated opening in September, the Hepkers will spend their time perfecting an upper-middle-priced menu composed of as many local ingredients as the couple can get its hands on.

“For us, we want to have a focused menu, and a concise menu,” Steward Hepker said.

“I want to have everything on my menu be the best thing I can possibly have.”

Dr. Robert Bayer, a hematologist and oncologist, is moving his practice to KishHealth System Cancer Center from the Northwestern Medicine Cancer Center Delnor in Geneva.

Bayer is a member of the Northwestern Medicine Regional Medical Group. He has been in Dr. Robert practice for more than Bayer 24 years and is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology. Bayer will begin seeing patients in DeKalb on June 13.

Dr. Alan Wan also will begin practicing at KishHealth System Cancer Center, beginning on July 22. Wan will see patients at the DeKalb and Rochelle locations, and is a member of the Northwestern Medicine Re-

Hillary Clinton’s purposeful misjudgments Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while secretary of state from 2009 to 2013 has been justifiably criticized as an error of judgment. What the new report from the State Department inspector general makes clear is it also was not a casual oversight. Clinton had plenty of warnings to use official government communications methods, to make sure her records were properly preserved and to minimize cybersecurity risks. She ignored them.

The 83-page report declares that “beginning in late 2005 and continuing through 2011,” the department revised its Foreign Affairs Manual and “issued various memoranda specifically discussing the obligation to use Department systems in most circumstances and identifying the risks of not doing so.” Clinton didn’t.

During her tenure, State Department employees were told that they were expected to use approved, secure methods to transmit information that was sensitive but unclassified, or SBU. If they needed to transmit SBU information outside the department’s network, they were told to ask information specialists for help. The report said there is no evidence that Clinton ever asked, “despite the fact that emails exchanged on her personal account regularly contained information that was marked as SBU.” On March 11, 2011, an assistant secretary sent a memorandum on cybersecurity threats directly to Clinton, noting a “dramatic increase” in attempts to compromise personal email accounts of senior department officials, possibly for spying or blackmail. That didn’t stop Clinton either. There were also numerous notifications that some emails (but not all) are considered federal records under the law and that she should print and file those in her office and, before leaving office, surrender all emails dealing with department business. She did so only about two years later, in December 2014.

Starting in 2009, there was a new, electronic system, known as SMART, to properly archive department emails without having to print and file them, but Clinton opted not to use it, out of concern that there was “overly broad access to sensitive materials.” According to the report, after a staff member “raised concerns” with another official about Clinton’s personal email server, the staff was instructed “never to speak of the Secretary’s personal email system again.”

The department’s email technology was archaic. Other staffers also used personal email, as did Secretary Colin Powell (2001-2005), without preserving the records. But there is no excuse for the way Clinton breezed through all the warnings and notifications. While not illegal behavior, it was disturbingly unmindful of the rules. In the middle of the presidential campaign, we urge the FBI to finish its own investigation soon, so all information about this troubling episode will be before the voters.

Civility takes a hit as protesters cry foul There’s a toxic stew brewing in the American political bloodstream this year. It’s bubbling up on both sides and not just in a presidential race that is shaping up as one of the more venomous in this nation’s history.

A protest, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at a Donald Trump rally last week quickly turned into a riot, with flaming T-shirts and plastic bottles hurled at police and rocks tossed at police horses. Inside, the ever-pugnacious Trump stoked the ire, taunting protesters to “Go home to mommy.”

A Democratic convention in Nevada recently ended with supporters of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders shutting that event down amid screaming and profanity, followed by days of threatening phone calls and texts to the convention chairwoman.

In Minneapolis last week, Mayor Betsy Hodges was cornered by protesters at a talk she was giving on equity.

Protesters shouted her down, strode onto the stage and edged within inches of the mayor, grabbing her microphone before police finally escorted them out. Similar protests have

disrupted Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and school board meetings.

Every one of those protesters doubtless believe their cause just, and the frustration is, in some instances, understandable. Nevertheless, they are indicative of a troubling trend: Americans who have decided their issues and feelings are so important they override the need to behave within acceptable bounds.

Democracy has proved to be an audacious but durable experiment in self-governance, much copied across the world since its birth in this country more than two centuries ago. But it does rest on a few pillars. One of those is that the self-governed must forgo violence and intimidation as a means of achieving their ends. The peaceful passage of power, whether at the smallest local school board or with the presidency itself, is foundational to our way of government, and it rests on the willingness of some citizens to take on responsibilities that most would rather not.

Effecting change in this system is hard, and it’s meant to be. It’s much harder than just

shouting down someone you disagree with, or setting fire to a plastic bottle and pitching it at someone.

There are groups across this country doing that hard work of civic engagement. Some of them met in Minneapolis earlier this week, searching for new ways to get underrepresented Americans engaged in the system, to find positive ways to make that system work for everyone.

They know the path to change that improves lives is not violence and intimidation, but numbers. If everyone who grumbled about Trump turned out at GOP primaries, he would not be the presumptive nominee. If low-income voters were as reliable a bloc as seniors, their voices would ring louder.

The late Walter H. Judd, a congressman from Minnesota in the 1950s, noted that “people often say that in a democracy decisions are made by a majority of the people. Of course, that is not true. Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote – a very different thing.”

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Trump, Clinton tied in polls: Were all the wise men wrong?

It was conventional wisdom among the political cognoscenti during most of the primary season that Donald Trump could not win the general election.

The evidence seemed strong.

Over 12 months of polling from May 2015 to April 2016, Hillary Clinton ran ahead of Trump in 63 national polls, while Trump led her in only six and tied her in three. Polls in the dozen or so 2012 target states showed similar results.

But Trump enthusiasts insisted their man would easily prevail. Now May polling suggests, to paraphrase the former British Prime Minister Lord Melbourne, that what all the wise men promised has not happened and what all the damned fools said would happen has come to pass.

The current RealClearPolitics average of recent polls shows Trump with 43.4 percent and Clinton with 43.2 percent. The five polls in question were conducted between May 13 and May 19, well after Trump’s decisive victory in Indiana May 3.

Those numbers are not etched in stone. His 43 percent is not much different from what he was polling against Clinton between September 2015 and February 2016, but it’s above his levels during the heat of the Republican contest in March and April.

Clinton’s 43 percent is the lowest she’s been averaging against Trump since the cycle began. It’s possible,

VIEWS Michael Barone though not assured, that her numbers may rise after Bernie Sanders’ increasingly aggressive but doomed candidacy ends.

Trump’s sky-high unfavorable ratings declined somewhat after he clinched the nomination. It’s possible that Clinton’s rising unfavorable ratings – higher than Trump’s in some May polls – may decline as well by the time she is officially nominated in Philadelphia July 27.

Note that, despite the two candidates’ universal recognition, the percentage of undecided voters seems rather high, at least 11 percent in the May polls. That’s not surprising, since, as many commentators have noted, majorities of voters have unfavorable feelings toward both nominees – the first time that’s been the case since polling began in 1935.

Even so, the patterns of support are familiar, in line with the close partisan division that’s prevailed for the last two decades. The irresistible force of corrosively negative public opinion may have prevailed in primaries, where two candidates almost no one took seriously 12 months ago, Trump and Bernie Sanders, have won 41 percent and 42 percent

of popular votes.

But that force has not succeeded, so far at least, in altering what has been the immoveable object of partisan polarization. Trump has big margins among men, whites and white evangelicals, Clinton among women, blacks and Hispanics. More than 80 percent of self-identified Republicans back Trump and more than 80 percent of self-identified Democrats back Clinton.

Support for both candidates is within the narrow range of 41 percent to 46 percent of the vote in the four May polls sponsored by television networks – CBS/New York Times, Fox News, NBC/ Wall Street Journal and ABC/Washington Post.

Examination of the internal numbers suggests Trump is running worse than Mitt Romney among white college graduates and better among non-college whites. Clinton seems to be running weaker than Barack Obama among men, especially non-college whites.

There has been much focus on Trump’s negative numbers among women, but Clinton does even worse among non-college white men, only 14 percent of whom support her according to the ABC/Washington Post poll. That’s less than the 20 percent to 28 percent the May network polls show Trump winning among Hispanics.

This year was the first time since primaries have dominated the nomi-

nation process that both nominees owe their victories to majorities from their parties’ most downscale constituencies.

Almost all of Clinton’s popular vote majorities have come from black voters, especially in the South. Exit polls showed her losing white voters to Sanders in every non-Southern state where one was conducted.

Trump’s biggest majorities came, especially in the crucial March primaries, from non-college whites. Not for nothing did he say on the night of the Nevada caucuses, “I love the poorly educated.”

The higher turnout this year in Republican than Democratic contests suggests that Trump voters are energized, while Clinton may have trouble turning out heavily Democratic voters, especially the young.

Trump has benefited from one other thing: the dynastic candidacies of Jeb Bush, who was leading Republican polls when he announced, and Hillary Clinton, whose numbers have been falling even as Barack Obama’s job approval has risen. Association with past presidents doesn’t help when voters want change. That’s one more reason the wise men may turn out to be wrong.

The conversation we are not having about the effects of pornography

Recently, a nonbinding resolution declaring pornography a “public health crisis” passed by unanimous vote through Utah’s state House and Senate, and was signed by Gov. Gary Herbert. In response, droves of Internet commenters tore into the legislators and the activists who pushed for its passage. Often, they discounted the resolution as theocracy or moral policing masquerading as public health policy, ignoring any evidence-based merit it might have.

While people are entitled to their skepticism regarding the backgrounds or motivations of those behind the resolution, this does not address the reasoning behind its arguments. In reality, criticisms of pornography transcend religion and morality.

Internet pornography is a very recent development, especially when compared with humans’ evolutionary timeline – and our brains have yet to adapt. Porn producers are hard at work each day developing audiovisual expe-

riences that are ever more abundant, ubiquitous, novel and stimulating. Just as fast-food franchises hacked our appetites by developing synthetic flavors, aromas and textures that target our brain’s reward system – leaving us with an obesity epidemic – porn producers are learning to hack our libidos with new technologies such as HD video and virtual reality. It’s not unreasonable to pause and ask ourselves how their handiwork might be affecting our lives.

The negative effects of over-consuming Internet pornography is a well-documented phenomenon. Combine this with porn’s wild popularity and you have a recipe for a genuine public health concern. Individuals with porn problems are members of relationships, families, workplaces and communities, so individual porn problems trickle up to become societal problems. After all, we treat drugs, alcohol and gambling as serious issues not because everyone who partakes in them has an addiction but because the problematic few have a deleterious effect on our communities as a whole.

Thousands of individuals, often

young and male, are reporting that using porn multiple times per day trained their brains to associate their sexualities with pixels on their computer screens, rather than sexual activity with human beings. They are reporting that they have a decreased interest in seeking out human partners, and if they do so, they often cannot achieve sexual arousal during partnered sex, have a decreased sensitivity to pleasure or cannot experience an orgasm without porn or porn fantasy.

Their discussions have finally drawn the interest of researchers, clinicians and journalists. In reaction to their complaints, some good research is underway on the effects of porn addiction, such as the 2014 University of Cambridge study that used brain imaging to show that the porn-addicted brain reacts to porn cues the same way the drug-addicted brain reacts to drug cues.

These things require public interest, which requires open discussion about the subject – discussion that has been previously restricted to online forums and confidential sessions between clinicians and porn-addicted clients.

Utah’s resolution doesn’t call for an explicit ban on porn, but the open language calling for “policy change” is sufficiently vague to leave us all wondering. Is the best approach to porn addiction through legislation?

Certainly not, if that legislation leads to outlawing people’s right to consume pornography. Intimacy, sex, love and what we do with our genitals during our free time aren’t areas for a government to regulate.

Pragmatically, the resolution in Utah is great for the porn-recovery community. It served its purpose of sparking discussion about this under-discussed topic. While Utah’s declaration may cause disagreement, at the end of the day we don’t serve society when we avoid complicated, taboo subjects for the sake of comfort. We need to talk about these things openly to solve problems and progress as a species.

And yes, that includes porn.

Spartans making short trip to DeKalb for matchup with Geneseo

ecarifio@shawmedia.com One thing is for sure heading into the Class 2A DeKalb Supersectional – the Northern Illinois Big 12 will have a team playing in the state championship.

Whether it’s Sycamore or Geneseo will be decided at 5 p.m. Tuesday at DeKalb High School.

“We have a lot of experience on this field,” Sycamore defender Claire Schroeder said. “I think we can definitely use that to our advantage. I’m

confident my team has the skills and the willpower to go far, and I think that we can definitely do good things for the rest of the season. We have a good chance.”

While not a home game, the distance to the field from Sycamore High School is less than 5 miles. Geneseo has a 100mile trip. Not to mention, the Spartans have played three games on the Barbs’ turf field this season alone.

“It’s almost like having home-field advantage, without it actually being our home field,” Sycamore coach Dave Lichamer said. “The girls have expo-

sure to the field not just through high school but also possibly through their club teams. It’s nice to have a field very familiar, and close to home so you can bring your fan base out and no one has to travel.”

The Spartans (22-2-1) won the DeKalb sectional with a 1-0 win over Kaneland, their fifth shutout of the Knights in the past two seasons. Geneseo (20-2-2), which beat perennial power Peoria Notre Dame earlier in the postseason, beat Alleman, 5-2, to win the Peoria Notre Dame Sectional.

It’s not just the records of the two

teams that are similar – the Maple Leafs have outscored opponents 116-18 this year, while Sycamore has beaten its opponents by a total of 102-15. The Spartans have outscored foes 17-1 in the postseason so far, Geneseo has won by a combined 13-3 in its four postseason games.

Geneseo played a pair of NIB 12 East teams, beat Morris, 6-0, and tying Yorkville, 3-3. The Spartans swept the Foxes, 3-1 and 8-4, and swept Morris, 2-0 and 5-0.

Defender Maegan Schwartz, who filled in for Cook in goal, said the team is confident heading into its Elite Eight showdown.

“I think that if we play how we’ve been playing, and we want it as bad as we’ve been wanting it, we can definitely play a really good game,” Schwartz said. “It will be a good game no matter who we play.”

CHICAGO – Jason Hammel wasn’t thrilled to leave Monday’s game after two innings of one-hit ball because of right hamstring cramps.

At least he could joke about it afterward.

“I blew the no-hitter,” he cracked.

Travis Wood and three other relievers combined for seven perfect innings after Hammel left, and the Cubs one-hit the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2-0 victory.

It was the Cubs’ sixth straight victory after losing eight of 12. They have the best record in baseball and are a season-high 21 games over .500 (35-14).

Hammel exited after cramping while warming up for the third inning. Wood (3-0) pitched four perfect innings in his

longest stint of the season to get the win.

Justin Grimm, Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon pitched one inning each for the Cubs, with Rondon getting his ninth save.

That’s the longest hitless performance in a game by Cubs relievers since they went 81/3 innings Sept. 26, 1948.

Cubs pitchers retired the final 25 batters Monday, a franchise best since at least 1974, according to STATS. “I think it’s truly Travis Wood’s day,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said.

“He set that whole game up. Period.”

Hammel said he is “very optimistic” he will be ready for his next turn in the rotation but will see he how he feels today. He said he never had had a cramping issue such as that and was surprised by this one.

Indy winner Rossi chased a career INDIANAPOLIS – When Alexander Rossi pulled into victory lane after his upset win in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 victory, the American had no idea what he was supposed to do during the famed celebration.

And there’s the million-dollar question – just what does the future hold for Rossi?

Jacques Villeneuve won the 1995 Indianapolis 500 and was world champion in Formula One two years later. Juan Pablo Montoya won the Indy 500 in 2000 and immediately made the leap to F1.

Rossi is still a reserve driver for the Manor F1 team. Should a seat come open on that team, he could be called on to race. He also could try to position his win Sunday into a full-time return to F1. He was passed over by Gene Haas when he launched his North Carolina-based F1 team this year, but Haas could try to position more marketability in the future with an American driver and Indy 500 champion.

It’s not something he wanted to discuss a day after his big win.

“What’s happening in the long term, I don’t know, and I’m frankly not that interested at the moment,” he said. “I watched the Monaco race Sunday morning, and it was a great race. Then I forgot about it and moved on and went and drove in the Indy 500, and we came out with a win.

“For the time being, that’s all that matters to me, and I’m going to carry that forward.”

It makes him an anomaly of sorts for the Indy 500, a race in which many hope to see an American driver win, only few know anything about this one.

But the 24-year-old is very American, even though he spent the last eight years based in Europe.

Some things to know about Rossi: • The movie “The Breakfast Club” and the TV show “The Blacklist.”

• Chicken wings, particularly from Indianapolis’ own Big Lug Canteen.

• He’s a New England Patriots fan.

• He listens to a variety of alternative rock, country music and Chris Brown.

• Rossi doesn’t eat carbs, but will make an exception for Jimmy John’s sandwiches and In-N-Out burgers.

• His favorite place in the world is Lake Tahoe.

• He grew up racing NASCAR star Kyle Larson and the two were rivals as children.

As for his preferred fashion? Well, Rossi can switch back and forth between a regular pair of jeans and the slim-fitting cut that Europeans prefer.

“Depends on the scenario and the girl that you’re going on a date with,” he said.

In many respects, the 6-foot-2 Rossi is

very much a millennial. In others, he’s a hyper-focused race car driver with a commitment level that tolerates very little compromise or deterrence from a strict regimen.

He’s had to make some very different changes this year as he’s adapted from F1 to IndyCar, mostly in his exercise routine.

He works out seven days a week, but has switched from a focus on cardiovascular activities to more strength training. The upshot is he can now eat chicken wings.

“For the past three years I’ve been very, very concerned about the weight that I am because in Formula 1 it’s hyper critical,” he said. “Being 6-2, it’s a little bit difficult to manage that. In IndyCar, it doesn’t really matter ... so that means I can eat what I want.”

Rossi called his Indy 500 victory the biggest win of his career to date, and likely the biggest he’ll ever have. He mentioned several times that it’s going to be a life-changing victory, and expanded on that Monday by saying it answered many questions about himself and his goals.

“There was huge question marks, rightly so, over me and IndyCar and specifically oval racing, having absolutely zero background,” he said. “I think that this has kind of cemented the fact that, A: I don’t have an issue with it. B: I do enjoy it. C: I’ve fully committed to this program and being successful in IndyCar, and this

26 Treatment varies for arterial blockages Dear Dr. K: A test showed a 50 percent blockage in one of my coronary arteries.

That sounds pretty bad to me. But the cardiologist said I didn’t need an angioplasty and stent. Why? Dear Reader: Coronary arteries send needed blood to the heart muscle. That blood flow can be blocked by cholesterol-rich plaques of atherosclerosis. When the blockage seriously reduces blood flow, it increases your risk of a heart attack. An angioplasty and stents can be helpful for restoring blood flow, but the procedure is not risk-free.

Every time a doctor considers whether to order a test or a treatment, he or she balances the likely benefit against the likely risk. When an artery feeding the heart muscle is blocked “just” 50 percent, there still is good blood flow to the heart. So the benefit of reducing that blockage is small.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me describe how an angioplasty and stent work. First, the doctor pushes a soft tube (a catheter) from an artery in your leg or arm up to your heart. Inside the catheter is a thinner catheter that has an inflatable balloon near its tip. And inside that catheter is an even thinner wire with a soft tip.

Once the catheter reaches the heart, the doctor guides the wire down the artery until the wire tip is beyond the blockage and the balloon is right where the blockage is. Then the doctor inflates the balloon. This squashes the plaque against the wall of the artery, making the inside of the artery wider. As a result, blood flows through the area more easily.

Around the catheter, surrounding the balloon, is a tiny, expandable mesh wire tube: a stent. When the balloon is in-

However, the expanded stent is left in place, keeping the plaque squashed against the wall of the artery and allowing good blood flow through the artery. Most stents are coated with a drug that helps to prevent re-narrowing of the artery.

Minor risks of angioplasty include discomfort and bleeding at the insertion site. Rare but more serious risks (such as a heart attack) occur in about 3 percent of people undergoing the procedure. And to prevent blood clots at the stent site, people need to take anti-clotting medications for up to a year afterward.

As a result, cardiologists typically don’t do angioplasties with stents unless an artery is at least 70 percent blocked.

That’s the point at which the benefit of stenting outweighs the risks.

There are many ways to slow the growth of plaques – in your case, to keep the plaque from increasing from 50 percent to 70 percent blockage. If you are not already doing so, ask your doctor if you should be taking medications, such as aspirin, and cholesterol- or blood-pressure-lowering drugs. You also should exercise regularly and eat a heart-healthy diet. Finally, if you smoke, quit.

I’m a 51-year-old gay male. I have a sweet, dear friend I’ll call “Samantha” who is slightly older. The problem is, she wants more than friendship. She insists on spending time with me and calls me daily. She hugs me repeatedly when she goes to leave, and kisses my neck or cheek – whichever she can get to.

Samantha has touched me in a way that makes me uncomfortable. She places herself so her body touches my hand or arm. When she does, I quickly remove it. She says I remind her of her brother, but I’m not feeling a sibling relationship here. She invites herself over and gets mad if I tell her I have other plans.
