Guest speaker brings experience from close encounters with president Edward Rosado Jr. has seen a lot of the world since graduating from Sycamore High School with the Class of 1976.

Rosado, who retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2011 as a colonel after 30 years of service, will be the keynote speaker and guest of honor at several of the many DeKalb County Memorial Day observances set for Sunday and Monday. (We’ll be running a list of planned events in Saturday’s edition.)

In 30 years in the service, Rosado held a lot of jobs, but perhaps his most high-profile assignment was in the mid-1990s, when Rosado was an advance agent for Air Force One. Whenever the leader of the free world touches down, it’s a highly choreographed production.

“It has to be perfect – there’s no room for screwing up,” Rosado, 58, said. “… The eyes of the world are upon you. There’s a lot of preparatory time spent coordinating with everybody to make sure everything goes off without a hitch.”

Rosado said everything has to be put together precisely – from the motorcade or helicopter that takes the president off the tarmac to the security in the area, the food and communications infrastructure, securing and testing fuel for the plane’s next trip, lodging for the flight crew – you name it, it’s someone’s job to think about it.

“When President Clinton did his Pacific run in 1996, he had probably eight or nine stops, and every single one of those stops had to be choreographed out,” Rosado said.

On that trip, Rosado ended up in Canberra, Australia, working to prepare for Air Force One’s arrival there.

Although he crossed paths with the president and the world’s most famous plane repeatedly, Rosado said that wasn’t his favorite job.

Rosado spent much of his career as a navigator in the Air Force’s KC-135 Stratotanker, a plane that conducts mid-air refueling missions in support of combat aircraft, including the SR-71 Blackbird, one of the fastest to

The recon planes, which were capable of reaching speeds faster than Mach 3, burned so much fuel on takeoff that they needed to be refueled shortly after. The Air Force retired the Blackbird in 1999.

Rosado said that working as chief of training for the KC-135 at Beale Air Force Base in Northern California was actually his favorite job – one he would have done for free.

“It’s just kind of fun to be able to go up and fly with guys, and show them new ways to do things,” Rosado said. “It’s exciting.”

This weekend, Rosado will be speaking at several events, including at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Northern Illinois Veterans Memorial in Kirkland, and at 3 p.m. at the Joiner Cemetery west of Sycamore on Old State Road.

He’ll be at the $12 steak dinner at the Genoa Veterans home later that day, with a social hour beginning at 5 p.m. and the meal at 6 p.m.

As for the message that Rosado will deliver this weekend, he says it’s simple: “All the citizens of our nation need to take just a moment to kind of reflect upon what Memorial Day really means – and what it’s there for is to observe those who died in battle,” Rosario said. “They were in battle to defend our freedoms, our nation, our constitution.

“Because of their sacrifice, we live in the greatest country in the world. I’ve been all over the world, and I will tell you without a doubt America is the greatest nation.”

Farmers markets in DeKalb, Sycamore also plan to offer new options

news@daily-chronicle.com GENOA – A sure sign summer is right around the corner is when local farmers markets start popping up around DeKalb County.

Genoa’s Homegrown and Handmade market kicked off its season from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, gifts and baked goods.

“The market is hugely popular, and we get people from all over northern Illinois,” said Cortney Strohacker, executive director of the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce. “There’s a strong sense of community here, and people like to support local merchants.”

Joanne Burrows, a longtime Genoa resident, said she has come to almost every farmers market because she likes the variety of fresh food at reasonable prices. She said she’s been looking forward to the first market for a while.

“I bought some flowers and tomatoes,” she said. “It’s just nice. I like to support the people who are here.

There are a lot of Genoa merchants.

It’s also nice to see people that you haven’t seen in a while.”

Dee Arrigo of Genoa was just browsing the market with her family, but said she’d been eyeing some flowers to take home.

“This is only my second time here, and it’s very nice,” she said.

“There are a lot more crafts than I thought, and it’s bigger than I thought. It’s also very important to support local merchants.”

Fresh-picked asparagus was a big hit at the Yaeger’s Farm stand. The vegetables had been picked in Cortland the day before, vendor Gene Bradford said.

“We also have some rhubarb that was grown in our backyard, and in another month or so we’ll have more locally grown produce,” he said. “The market is a good opportunity to meet a variety of customers and see people we’ve known for years.”

Sycamore teachers set up lemonade stand for students

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – At the sound of the year’s final school bell Thursday, students bolted from Sycamore Middle School and headed downtown on skateboards and bicycles, fueled by the promise of summer vacation.

A surprise waited for them down the road, however, where the school’s physical education teachers set up a lemonade stand, stocked with cookies, Popsicles and goody bags. The lemonade stand has been a tradition at the school for the past six years, and has evolved with the end of each school year, physical education teacher Denny Miller said.

Between 100 to 200 students walking home from school visited the stand Thursday.

“We want to get the local community into the mix here so the kids can, maybe, experience some other stuff besides just the teacher stuff,” Miller said. “It’s to have some fun at the end of the school year.”

Sycamore police officers and firefighters handed out frozen treats and goody bags stuffed with calendars of upcoming events, while a mob of teenagers grabbed for cups of lemonade and baked goods.

Meanwhile, teachers hoped they handed out enough free passes and brochures to encourage the kids to continue engaging with their community well past school’s end, physical education teacher Ray Borgman said.

Born: March 31, 1928; in Chicago Died: May 24, 2016; in DeKalb Leroy Louis “Roy” Vos, 88 of DeKalb, formerly of Dixon, IL, died May 24, 2016, at home. Roy was born March 31, 1928, in Chicago to Louis Vos and Emma (Knourek) Vos. He had two younger siblings; a brother, Robert, and a sister June. Leroy married the love of his life, Lois Drake, on June 15, 1950, in Council Bluffs, IA. Leroy is survived by his wife, Lois; his children, Mark (Kathy) Vos, Jean Kelly, Susan (Michael) Tesch and John Vos; as well as his 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Emma Vos; and his siblings, Robert Vos and June Bahr.

Petitioners ask to be annexed into Sycamore District 427

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Twelve neighbors along Coltonville Road are asking to annex their property into Sycamore School District 427.

The group of homes along Coltonville Road between First Street and the South Branch of the Kishwaukee River have Sycamore mailing addresses, but fall just inside DeKalb School District 428’s boundaries. No school-aged children currently live in the area, although one family has two children who are 2 years and 5 months old, the petition shows.

District 427 board members reviewed the petition Tuesday and must choose whether to support or oppose with a resolution, or submit a letter to the Regional Board of Education expressing a neutral stance.

The Regional Board of Education would then hold a public hearing, where representatives of both the Sycamore and DeKalb school districts would be welcome to present and elaborate on their stance.

“My initial reaction is just to remain neutral on this and see what happens,” District 427 board President Jim Dombek said.

The hearing, which likely will take place in July, would determine the outcome of the petition, Sycamore Superintendent Kathy Countryman said.

The property has an equalized assessed value of $514,899 – $451,899 of which is taxable, board documents show.

However, District 427 board members expressed concern at the district’s meeting Tuesday that the property has no future land use on the city map.

“I think the land use gives me great pause – that it’s not designated yet,” board member Kristin Wrenn said.

Others, such as board member Eric Jones, didn’t see a surface reason to oppose the request, since the petitioners said they identify as Sycamore residents, and work, shop and bank in Sycamore. The petitioners’ homes are located in the jurisdictional area of the Sycamore Fire Department and

the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Aside from being included in what petitioner Sharon Johnson believes to be a more favorable school district, the annexation could make her property more marketable, she said. When she tried to sell her home 10 years ago, the family looking to buy eventually turned down the offer, she said.

“The only reason they did not buy it was because it was in the DeKalb school district,” Johnson said. “I know I was very upset when they built the new high school in DeKalb because my taxes went up $600 a year.”

Granting the petition would not increase the percentage of minority, low-income, or English learners by more than 3 percent, according to the petition.

The Sycamore Public Library is in the process of seeking a referendum for the authority to create the Sycamore Library District.

If the Sycamore Library District is created, the petitioners would be able to seek annexation to the new library district, should they be annexed into the school district.

Man faces charges after punching driver

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A man whom police said punched a driver repeatedly in the face, and in the same day stalked and hit a woman, remained at the DeKalb County Jail on Thursday.

According to court records, Kyle Miller, 32, a DeKalb transient, was walking in the 1000 block of Crane Drive around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when a driver, who did not see Miller, stopped just in front of him in the road.

When the man asked if Miller and

the person he was with were OK, Miller said they were, then punched the man – still in his car – three times in the face, and also damaged the rain guard above the winKyle Miller dow, court records show. Less than three hours later, at 10:15 p.m., Miller followed a former girlfriend to the building where she lives, and hit her when she tried to get inside.

He had been following the woman for the past week and ran when po-

lice came to arrest him, court records show.

Miller is charged with aggravated battery, criminal damage to property, domestic battery, stalking and resisting a peace officer. The most serious charge, aggravated battery, is punishable by two to five years in prison.

DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery set Miller’s bond at $250,000 Thursday.

He must post $25,000 bail to be released form the DeKalb County Jail, and wear an electronic home monitoring bracelet upon his release.

He is due back in court June 27.

SYCAMORE – A former Sycamore High School student facing criminal charges and a civil lawsuit in connection with an October 2014 crash that severely injured a classmate wants a better deal from prosecutors.

Connor Shaver, 18, was charged in 2014 with aggravated reckless driving and driving more than 35 mph faster than the limit. Aggravated reckless driving is a Class 4 felony typically punishable by one to three years in prison.

Shaver turned down prosecutors’ offer of a plea deal Wednesday that would have spared him a felony conviction.

His attorney, Rick Amato, asked judge Philip Montgomery for another week to continue negotiations with the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Assistant State’s Attorney Howard Oestry said Shaver was offered a deal that would have allowed him to plead guilty to misdemeanor reckless driving and speeding charges.

Amato declined to comment.

Shaver is next due in court at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The mother of Morgan Witmer, the girl injured in the crash, has filed suit against Shaver, his father, Todd Shaver, and Sycamore School District 427.

Debra Witmer filed the suit both individually and on behalf of her daughter; it seeks more than $50,000 in damages.

On Oct. 27, 2014, Morgan Witmer and friend Connor Shaver, who was 17 at the time, decided to

three broken ribs on each side of her rib cage.

The civil suit claims District 427 officials failed to enforce their policy prohibiting students from driving their own vehicles to classes at KEC. It also seeks damages from Connor Shaver and his father, Todd Shaver, who owned the 2004 Nissan 350z sports car his son was driving that day.

The school district has claimed in court filings that Morgan Witmer – who was 16 at the time of the crash – was at fault; not the district.

The district claims Witmer voluntarily violated school district policy when she chose to ride with Connor Shaver instead of taking the bus.

Thomas Boswell, the attorney representing the school district, couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Thursday.

The civil matter is due back in court June 16, according to court records.

Kishwaukee College seeks opinions on listening tour

rgillespie@shawmedia.com GENOA – Kishwaukee College officials are holding listening sessions as they seek to make connections with residents of the communities the college serves.

The listening sessions, being held at locations around the community college’s service area, also are needed for accreditation purposes.

“We will gather the information ... present it to our board, and from there we’re going to set a strategic plan for the college,” said Laurie Borowicz, who became president of Kishwaukee College in January.

The first three of five sessions were held this week. Monday’s event was at Sycamore High School, and Tuesday the forum was at Rochelle Township High School. No residents came out for the session Wednesday at Genoa-Kingston High School, so it ended earlier than anticipated.

Nevertheless, Borowicz said she is learning from stakeholders what they expect and need from the college.

“We are hearing that we need to be responsive to business needs. We really need to look at the local industries here and make sure we’re helping build that pipeline from high schools into college,” Borowicz said.

“It’s part of [Kishwaukee College’s] mission to be representative of what the communities that we serve need,” said Nicklas, who previously ran the DeKalb County Long Term Recovery Corp. established after a tornado hit Fairdale last year.

“We’re rooted in the community, the taxpayers who we serve are looking to have certain needs met, and we’re trying to mesh those with what our students’ needs are.” said they wanted to offer more options for lunch to encourage business people to stop by the market and eat during their lunch breaks.

“Rolling Harvest has sliders, wraps, hummus, salads, so it’s a good mix,” she said. “People know where their food is coming from and can ask the vendors and talk to the farmers.

There’s a transparency there that people like and a trust factor when they see the same vendor every week.

But it’s also nice to check out the new vendors, too.”

Sycamore’s Farmers Market opens June 7 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and runs every Tuesday through September at the corner of Elm and Somonauk streets.

The market also will feature Tinez Tacos, Mike’s Empanadas and Rolling Harvest food trucks to give shoppers dining options, along with several returning favorites including Waterman Winery, DeKalb County Community Gardens and many local farms.

Hoppers Poppers will sell popcorn and Rovers Canine Snacks will have goodies for man’s best friend.

Kishwaukee College was stricken by a number of issues this past academic year, starting with the state not having a budget. That left state higher education institutions without millions in state aid. It wasn’t until legislation passed last month that the college received $1.1 million of the $5 million its budget anticipated from Springfield.

With the state not funding Monetary Award Program grants for low-income students, the college was not able to front the money to hundreds of students affected, officials said.

So the students were on the hook for the portion of their tuition bill that MAP grants would have covered.

Borowicz said the school also saw enrollment declines for the 2015-16 school year. That translated to a loss of $275,000 in tuition and fee revenue, she said.

Further, 24 employees were laid off in March as part of cost-cutting measures, which also included a tuition increase, cutbacks in some student and college services and an overall introspective of the college’s state of fiscal affairs.

Officials hope the listening sessions, which wrap up Wednesday in Shabbona, will yield information that could be used to formulate future strategies.

“It’s been about five years since Kish has done these feedback sessions,” Borowicz said. “We’re going to look at our strategic plan and make sure we’re on track.”

is known as the father of barbed wire. He invented barbed wire with the help of a coffee mill where he placed barbs along a wire and twisted another wire around it to keep it in place. By his death in 1906, Glidden was named one of the richest men in America, Glidden gave 63 acres of his homestead as the site for Northern Illinois Normal School which opened in 1898.

Henry Gurler was a Civil War veteran in the 42nd and 132nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was owner of Clover Farm in Afton Township where he developed the dairy innovations which made him world famous. Clover Dairy farm was the first in the state of Illinois to test for tuberculosis.

Awarded a gold medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition for his innovations in clean milk and cold storage when his samples of milk remained sweet for four days after arrival in Paris despite seventeen days of transit. His improvements in the dairy industry won him respect of dairymen all over the world.

(1903-2011)

A large towering stone is the centerpieces for the surrounding family in the “Bradt Circle.” Among the family in the circle is the grave of Charlie Bradt who lived to be 108 years of age. Charlie established Bradt Travel in DeKalb and was the first board president of Kishwaukee Country Club and helped to establish Oak Crest and Voluntary Action Center. He served on many committees and boards.

Rosette owned a printing and publishing business in DeKalb, and was editor of the DeKalb Chronicle.

He helped found Northern Illinois University and is recognized as the original patriarch for NIU. In 1968 DeKalb School District honored him by naming a school after him.

Katz Family

The Katz families of DeKalb have been loyal supporters of this community. The family was owner of Fourth Street Motor Sales and DeKalb Motor Sales. Best Known today for the family park that turned into a complex on Dresser Road in DeKalb. The six acre park has several lighted baseball diamonds, a skate park area, playground equipment, shelter house and dog park. One of the Katz’s grave has the following inscription - ”God Bless America, with their strength of character and spirit of idealism, they left a legacy of devotion to the family and community.” Today the Katz family is still active in the area in the banking business.

The Fairview Park Cemetery Association and the DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association are partnering to host a walking tour at the Fairview Cemetery, as well as tours of the cemetery’s historic and recently refurbished mausoleum.

The self-guided walking tours starting at the mausoleum will feature an annotated map directing visitors to the grave sites of prominent citizens and explaining their importance to the community. Forty sites will be listed, including the graves of such notable figures as Isaac Ellwood, Jacob Haish, John Glidden and Annie Glidden.

Jacob Haish was one of the first inventors of barbed wire. In competition with other barbed wire inventors, Isaac Ellwood and Joseph Glidden, he patented three styles of barbed fencing, but was most famous for his “S-barb” design. Haish had bequeathed a $150,000 gift to the library in his will in 1931. The Haish Memorial Library otherwise known as the DeKalb Public Library still stands as a tribute to him today. Haish would have been the first thing you see when you entered the cemetery.

However, over time the land to the east has sold and First Street became the main entrance leaving Haish’s beautiful monument at the back of the cemetery.

William Eckhardt was the first Farm Advisor in the nation. He was appointed to that position by newly formed DeKalb Soil Improvement Association on June 1, 1912. The association would later split and become the Farm Bureau and DeKalb AgResearch.

Eckhardt patented a way of dying corn which is still used today.

Dee Palmer (1914-2011)

Dee Palmer was a conductor of the DeKalb Municipal Band for 63 years. The band made up of about 50 musicians performs free concerts each week during the summer. The concerts are sponsored by the City and DeKalb Park District.

Ellwood Family Mausoleum (1886-1980)

Originally from New York, Isaac Ellwood settled in DeKalb where he opened a hardware and implement store. He rose to prominence when he began to acquire farm properties around the area. He eventually began to import Percheron draft horses which resulted in a 3,400 acres stock farm. Ellwood met Henry Rose of Waterman who had patented a fence that intrigued Ellwood, who thought he could improve it. He did just that with his version of barbed wire. The businessman in Ellwood recognized that another inventor, Joseph Glidden had a better version of fencing, so Ellwood bought 1/2 partnership in the Glidden design. The family Mausoleum holds 23 members of Ellwood family.

Chicago school leaders and students, parents and community members from around the state rally Thursday in the rotunda at the state Capitol for fair education funding.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – A day after Republicans booed and yelled at Illinois House Democrats for passing their own budget without GOP input, leaders from both parties and the governor resumed talks Thursday on how to end an 11-month budget stalemate.

But negotiations remain tenuous, and lawmakers conclude their spring session Tuesday.

“The Democrat leaders now share our sense of urgency of bringing this impasse to a close,” Republican House Leader Jim Durkin said after the meeting in Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office.

Their comments came less than a day after House Democrats approved a nearly $40 billion budget within hours of its introduction Wednesday evening. The Republican governor already has threatened to veto it if it passes the Senate.

The spending plan that the House Democrats proposed includes money for schools in one single bill – unlike last year, when it was separated from the rest of the budget. Schools then were largely spared the consequences of the budget impasse because Rauner approved their funding.

AP: 12 security fence breaches at 2 big airports in Chicago

CHICAGO – An Associated Press investigation has found that people climbed over or crashed cars through security fencing around Chicago’s two main airports more than authorities have disclosed.

In all, there were 12 intrusions from 2004 through mid-February at O’Hare or Midway.

Chicago’s Department of Aviation cited five breaches when AP first asked last year. Federal records revealed another four.

A department spokeswoman would not explain the discrepancy.

Chicago Schools CEO leads Springfield rally over funding

CHICAGO – The head of Chicago Public Schools said the district has “reached the point of no return” and faces severe cuts without “equal” funding from the state.

Schools CEO Forrest Claypool led hundreds of teachers, parents and students in a rally Thursday in Springfield seeking more state funds for Chicago’s schools. The district faces a $1

Autopsy finds man found dead after shootout killed self

CHICAGO – An autopsy has determined a suburban Chicago man found dead in his home after a shootout with FBI agents committed suicide.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said Wednesday that 50-year-old Melvin Toran

is “continuing to urge the governor and aides to be more persuasive on their efforts to pass the personal agenda” and that they should “avoid the temptation to hold Illinois hostage as a tool.”

Rauner said the Democrats’ latest plan is “not really helpful to anything because it’s not realistic, it’s not honest; there’s no way to pay for that spending level.”

His office has said the Democrats’ budget is $7 billion out of balance.

Democrats note that the budget Rauner proposed in February was also $4 billion short of expected revenue.

Rauner declined to say Thursday what he would do with the education portion of the budget. Instead, he said he is “cautiously optimistic” that lawmakers in several working groups can reach agreement on some of the pro-business, union-weakening proposals he wants as a condition to raising taxes.

The state is facing a $5 billion deficit and growing.

Democrats have shown no interest in considering Rauner’s ideas, which he said would improve the state’s economy. Instead, they repeatedly have called his plans an attack on the middle class.

Authorities described Toran as a street gang member with a long criminal record that included murder at age 18, drug dealing, assaulting a police officer and weapons violations.

Study: Barges can pull small fish past electric barriers

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – A federal study said small fish can be trapped in water currents

created by commercial barges and pulled through electric barriers designed to prevent invasive Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said tests show that fish swimming near barges can remain caught between them for substantial distances. In one trial, live fish were transported more than nine miles along the Illinois River. They went through a shipping lock and the barriers 37 miles from Lake Michigan at Chicago.

Researchers used golden shiners for the experiments.

They’re about the size of small Asian carp.

Fish and Wildlife official Charlie Wooley said Thursday the results are worrisome but there still is time to reduce the risk of the hungry, aggressive carp slipping past the electric barriers.

HORSE CAVE, Ky. – A group of college students trapped by flash flooding on a field trip to a Kentucky cave Thursday walked through neck-deep water to get to safety, authorities said.

The 19 people who escaped more than six hours after entering Hidden River Cave included students from Clemson University, four tour guides and two police officers who became trapped when they tried to rescue the group, police said.

There was no communication between the stranded cavers and the more than 150 emergency personnel at the scene.

The cavers became stranded in a portion of the cave known as “The Attic,” which has a higher ceiling, police said. They stayed there until deciding to find their way out as the water continued to rise, police said.

Trump sews up delegates to seal GOP nomination

BISMARCK, N.D. – Triumphantly armed with a majority of his party’s delegates, Republican Donald Trump unleashed a broadside attack Thursday on Hillary Clinton’s prescriptions for energy, guns, the economy and international affairs, shifting abruptly toward the general election with his likely Democratic opponent locked in a divisive primary contest.

The New York billionaire shrugged off signs of discord within his own campaign hours after sewing up the number of delegates needed to clinch the GOP nomination, a feat that completed an unlikely rise that has upended the political landscape and set the stage for a bitter fall campaign.

“Here I am watching Hillary fight, and she can’t close the deal,” Trump crowed during an appearance in North Dakota. “We’ve had tremendous support from almost everybody.”

Trump’s good news was tempered by ongoing internal problems. Those include the sudden departure of his political director and continuing resistance by many Republican leaders, including House Speaker Paul Ryan and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, to declaring their support for his outsider candidacy.

At the same time, Clinton faced fresh questions about her use of a private email server while secretary of state, even as she fought to pivot toward Trump, who she warned would take the country “backward on every issue and value we care about.”

The State Department’s inspector general released a report a day earlier concluding that Clinton did not seek legal approval for her private email server, guaranteeing the issue will continue nagging her campaign for a second summer. She insisted Thursday that she had done nothing wrong.

“It was allowed. And the rules have been clarified since I left about the practice. Having said that, I have said many times, it was a mistake. And, if I could go back, I would do it differently,” Clinton said, according to an interview transcript provided by ABC News.

Campaigning before union workers in Las Vegas, she decried Trump’s anti-union comments and his proposal to deport millions of immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally. She said he is an “unqualified loose cannon” who should never be president.

Complicating her election challenge, Clinton’s Democratic rival Bernie Sanders embraced the possibility of a one-on-one debate with Trump. The Republican said he’d “love to debate Bernie” as he faced reporters Thursday.

Just 75 delegates short of her own delegate majority, Clinton remains on a path to clinch the Democratic presidential nomination, according to an Associated Press count. But Trump got there first.

The New York businessman sealed the majority by claiming a small number of the party’s unbound delegates who told the AP they would support him at the national convention in July. Among them was Oklahoma GOP chairwoman Pam Pollard.

“I think he has touched a part of our electorate that doesn’t like where our country is,” Pollard said. “I have no problem supporting Mr. Trump.”

It takes 1,237 delegates to win the Republican nomination. Trump has reached 1,239 and will easily pad his total in primary elections on June 7.

Many on the right have been slow to warm to Trump, wary of his conservative bona fides. Others worry about his crass personality and the lewd comments he’s made about women.

Trump said during a press conference Thursday that he would “absolutely” end his habit of attacking fellow Republicans now that the nomination is effectively his. But that truce appeared to be short-lived.

Speaking later at a rally in Billings, Montana, Trump said 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney, who has refused to endorse him, had “failed so badly.” His campaign also released a celebratory Instagram video that features a montage of former rivals, including Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz, saying he would never be the party’s nominee.

Origin of key Clinton emails are a mystery

WASHINGTON – Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was supposed to have turned over all work-related emails to the State Department to be released to the public.

But an agency audit found at least three emails never seen before – including Clinton’s own explanation of why she wanted her emails kept private.

After 14 months of public scrutiny and skepticism over Clinton’s motives in keeping her emails secret, new questions emerged Thursday.

They centered on her apparent failure to turn over a November 2010 message in which she worried that her personal messages could become accessible to outsiders, along with two other messages a year later that divulged possible security weaknesses in the home email system she used while secretary of state.

The Clinton campaign has previously denied that her home server was breached, but newly revealed emails show an aide worried it could have been compromised.

The existence of these previously unreleased messages – which appear to have been found among electronic files of four former top Clinton State Department aides – renews concerns that Clinton was not completely forthcoming when she turned over a trove of 55,000 pages of work-related emails. And it has drawn fresh criticism from presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

On Thursday, Clinton said she had been forthcoming with her personal emails.

“I have provided all of my work-related emails, and I’ve asked that they be made public, and I think that demonstrates that I wanted to make sure that this information was part of the official records,” Clinton said, according to an interview transcript provided by ABC News.

Most of those messages have been made public by the State Department over the past year because of both a court order and Clinton’s willingness to turn them over. But hundreds were censored for national security reasons and 22 emails were completely withheld because the agency said they contained top secret material – a matter now under investigation by the FBI. Clinton said in March 2015 that she would turn over all work-related emails to the State Department after removing private messages that contained personal and family material.

“No one wants their personal emails made public, and I think most people understand that and respect their privacy,” she said after her exclusive use of private emails to conduct State Department business was confirmed by media reports.

Senate investigators have asked for numerous emails about Clinton’s server as part of their own inquiry into Clinton’s email practices in recent months, but they didn’t get copies of key messages made public by the State Department’s own watchdog this week, a senior Republican senator said Thursday.

CHICAGO – Taking Social Security benefits early comes with a price, yet more than 4 in 10 Americans who are 50 and over said they’ll dip into the program before reaching full retirement age.

An Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll released Thursday found that 44 percent report Social Security will be their biggest source of income during their retirement years.

Full benefits begin at 65 or 66 for those born between 1943 and 1954.

Americans can begin collecting as early as age 62, but with benefits reduced by up to 30 percent, according to the Social Security Administration.

“One thing we know for certain is that claiming early can have longterm repercussions on Ken your fiscal security as Chrzastek you age,” said Gary Koenig, vice president of Financial security at the AARP Public Policy Institute.

Koenig said benefits increase significantly for those who wait, rising around 8 percent more for each additional year past age 66 and up to 70, when benefits max out.

“So we encourage people to delay as long as possible,” he said.

But waiting is a luxury many Americans don’t have.

Ken Chrzastek of Chicago began drawing Social Security benefits at age 62 and pulled $50,000 out of an IRA after losing a retail job two years ago. He has been unable to find even part-time work. “Hiring a 62-year-old is a liability for a company,” he said.

The poll found that Americans 50 and older have multiple sources of income for retirement but that Social Security is the most common by far.

Eighty-six percent said they have or will have Social Security income. More than half had a retirement account such as a 401(k), 403(b), or an IRA. Slightly less had other savings. About 43 percent had a traditional pension.

The average age at which people expect to start or have started collecting Social Security benefits is 64. Just 9 percent said they would wait until after they turned 70.

While the retirement age has been

rising in recent years, particularly for women, the average American still retires relatively early, at age 64 for men and age 62 for women, according to the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College.

Charles Jeszeck, director of education, workforce and income security for the Government Accountability Office, said there is no one right answer to when people should take Social Security, especially since increases in life expectancy are not spread out evenly between the rich and poor, or between ethnic groups.

Included in any discussion about Social Security are lingering questions about its solvency.

The Social Security trust fund has been running a surplus every year since 1984. Those surpluses are forecast to stop sometime around 2020, as more boomers start claiming benefits.

The Social Security Administration said interest income from the fund should be able to bridge this gap until 2034. At that point, without changes, payments could shrink but not disappear.

Gary Burtless, a Brookings Institution economist, said that people taking benefits early – or late – should have no impact on the trust fund. “It costs the government roughly the same amount,” he said.

Among the presidential candidates, both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have called for an expansion of Social Security. Donald Trump said during a debate in March, “It’s my absolute intention to leave Social Security the way it is.”

Many Americans worry that they won’t have enough to live on once they stop working, the poll said.

Among those with incomes under $50,000, 58 percent said they feel more anxious than secure about the amount of savings they have for retirement.

People with higher incomes appear less anxious, but still 40 percent of those with incomes of $100,000 or more worry whether their savings will be sufficient.

Alison Cowen, 57, said she doesn’t see any path for her to retire – ever.

“Not unless a miracle happens,” she laughed sarcastically. “I just don’t have enough to live on for the rest of my life.”

The poll said a quarter of workers older 50 said they never plan to retire, a sentiment more common among lower-income workers.

Madigan, Dems vote to extend budget debacle Here we go again.

Despite the pain and controversy that followed Illinois going almost an entire year without an approved budget, Democrats in the Illinois House of Representatives have voted once again to pass an unbalanced budget certain to face a veto from Gov. Bruce Rauner.

That is bad enough. What’s worse is the way in which it was done.

The budget plan, a 500-page document, was introduced in the House on Wednesday and voted on the same day, after Democrats voted to end debate.

Then 63 members of the House, all of them Democrats under the command of House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, voted in favor. Nine Democrats joined the House’s 44 Republicans in voting “No.” How many of those who voted in favor had even read through what they were voting for?

Perhaps those capable of both speed-reading, and with a wonkish mastery of the complex finances of a state with more than 12 million people, and maybe a trusted few who were allowed any input into the Speaker’s budget decisions. We suspect the vast majority of Democrats simply did as they were told, and voted yes.This is the government we are getting in Illinois.

State Rep. Bob Pritchard accused his colleagues of ignoring the issues, and that’s certainly a fair assessment. House lawmakers approved a spending plan with a $7.2 billion deficit, despite the fact there has been no discussion about where the money to close that gap will come from There are also consent decrees and court orders requiring our state to continue funding certain services at 2015 levels, when the state was taking in considerably more in taxes, there are pension obligations that are consuming more and more of Illinois’ revenue – these issues, too, are being ignored.

The House has multiple appropriations committees whose job is supposed to be to help craft the budget. That work is not being done. Rank-and-file lawmakers were meeting independently to try to reach some compromises that could bring about a budget deal – their work was dismissed by Madigan as “not persuasive.”

What does appear persuasive is Madigan’s desire to show Rauner and the rest of Illinois that he is the one in charge.

So long as Madigan is in charge, this is the government we will get. It’s one where issues are ignored, budgets are passed with only cursory debate, and our state’s crisis situation appears set to deepen. Rauner and others have said they are “hopeful” a compromise can be worked out in the few days still remaining in May. As do many others, we would like to see this happen as well.

But the budget approved by House Democrats on Wednesday will not solve anything. There must be spending cuts, there must be reform, there must be compromise.

All we’ve seen so far from Madigan, and most of his party’s legislators, is more of the same.

Be safe and alert on the roads this Memorial Day weekend Memorial Day – the unofficial start to summer – is almost here, and plenty of DeKalb County residents are making plans for the long weekend.

For some, those plans will certainly include driving.

Whether it’s a short trip a town or two over, or leaving the state for an even warmer destination, tens of thousands will hit the road this weekend.

With an expected major influx of people on the roads over the next three days and the threat of severe weather, things can get dangerous out there.

We want to urge you to exercise extra caution and be safe behind the wheel.

AAA projects more than 38 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend.

That is the second-highest Memorial Day travel volume on record, according to AAA, and the most since 2005.

AAA also estimates about 70,000 more people will travel Memorial Day weekend this year compared with last.

With the lowest gas prices for this weekend in 11 years, it’s not much of a surprise to see an increase in travel on the roads.

With so many more cars on the road, it’s even more imperative to make good decisions.

Don’t drive recklessly.

Check your blind spots, especially for motorcycles.

Put your phone away – no texting, talking or otherwise looking at your phone while driving. Make sure to buckle up when driving and never consider driving if

intoxicated.

If you’re staying home and hosting a Memorial Day party, remember that you can be held liable if someone you serve is involved in a drunken driving crash. Make sure your guests designate a sober driver or help arrange ride-sharing with a sober driver, and serve lots of food and nonalcoholic beverages as well.

It may sound like the basics and we’re your parents reading the rules before you go have fun, but those things happen for a reason. We want you to enjoy the next weekend, too.

So by all means, please enjoy the first three-day weekend of the summer. But don’t put yourself in a position to make it the last one you can enjoy.

We must act now on compromise budget solutions

To the Editor: As a member of the bipartisan, bicameral Budget Working Group, my colleagues and I have been working hard to try to come to an agreement on a budget solution for both fiscal 2016 and fiscal 2017.

I’ve been pleased to be a part of the working groups, and I am encouraged by the fact that rank-and-file members have been stepping up to the plate and negotiating, but now it’s time for those positive discussions to become concrete proposals.

It is time to move forward and turn those talks into legislative action.

I’m proud to see this drive from rank-andfile members, but we have a very limited window for leaders in both parties to get on board with the compromises we’ve been proposing. We must act now.

Unfortunately, what we saw recently in the Democrats’ budget proposal is not what we’ve been talking about in the working group. I can’t believe my Democratic colleagues would support a spending plan that’s $7 billion out of balance. Instead, I’m confident we can get to a compromise

Here in the U.S., I mean. I’ve written many times already about his misogyny, xenophobia and racism. To leaders of countries around the world, he is an abomination. His rhetoric of hate turns rallies into mobs and deceives so many into thinking he actually cares about them.

This is why all of you good women and men who normally steer clear of politics must find ways to influence the debate over who should be our next president. You are the ones who can have the greatest influence in winnowing those margins. Most of the people in your lives don’t care what people like me have to say about elections. They do, however, care what you think.

I stand ready and willing to compromise with members on both sides of the aisle for a real solution for all of Illinois.

What is the meaning behind Memorial Day?

To the Editor: The coming holidays have a great mix of memories; my earliest perhaps was my father holding my hand for safety, and lighting a beautiful Roman candle. I can still

It can be scary wading into those choppy waters. When I saw my friend’s Facebook post, I thought of a 46-yearold woman who called me at my desk in the Plain Dealer newsroom in September 2008.

I had written several columns during that campaign season about how white working-class voters were reportedly struggling with the issue of race in the presidential election. I come from the white working class, and I knew from raw experience the content of too many of those conversations.

In those columns, I encouraged people like me, who were eager to elect the first black president of the United States, to talk to their loved ones – those who might only watch Fox so-called News Channel, but were willing to listen to an opposing viewpoint from someone they love.

That woman who called me was one of the brave souls who took me up on it.

In a trembling voice, she told me she had finally told her beloved father, “Stop.”

I described our conversation in an essay for The Nation the day after the election:

“He said he wouldn’t vote for a black man,” she told me. “And I held up my hand and said, Daddy, stop.”

She said it was the first time in her forty-six years that she had stood up

feel that “tug” as it fired.

I was 10 years old or so when in Brownie Scouts we got to carry beautiful bouquets in our local town parade, and place them, with perhaps some solemnness, at the veteran’s markers in our park. I had no idea what the markers meant.

Parades were the order of the day across our great country. Ours was led by the American Legion, then our own Grandpa White proudly marching. We all marched on to the park for the speeches that always followed.

The crowds dispersed by noon, and the rest of the day was fun-filled and carefree, usually ending with fireworks at night.

At our house the past 66 years I’ve been married to him, it is also around the time of my husband’s birthday – he was born on Memorial Day – so we have always had the greatest time with family and friends. We had horseshoes and croquet and swimming for the children, and many years of exuberant card games.

When evening came we always settled on music. We all love to sing the old songs, and have had organ and piano, guitars and banjos. One year we had four generations

to her father, and that her knees were trembling after she did it. When I asked her what happened next, she laughed.

“Well, after he got over the shock, we talked. And we’re still talking. I don’t know if he’s going to vote for Obama, but at least he understands now why I will.”

Eight years later, I still think about that woman because of the peace she described washing over her after she had stood up for what was right.

There’s nothing like it, and there’s only one way to find it.

You may think you don’t have it in you to speak up when someone you know talks about why he or she is voting for Donald Trump.

You’re just one person, you might say.

Multiply you by millions, I say.

I’m asking that you consider how you’re going to feel if Trump is elected and you know you could have done something to stop him.

But mine came home. They make such sacrifices with bodily injuries, leaving their homes and families. Through the centuries they went, eager and young; and you and I experience the precious freedom bought at such a tremendous price.

So many others went with the fierce hope that young people have, and they didn’t come home.

So, parents and teachers, teach our young to respect our flag and the military so they may know more than I did. Go ahead with fun times, fly the flag, with perhaps a moment of silence to remember.

Too many just didn’t come home.

Earlier this week, a friend of many years signed on to Facebook and surprised me – and surely many others who know her – by writing a short but powerful post about politics.

Specifically, she addressed that small and vocal percentage of Bernie Sanders supporters who insist they will never vote for Hillary Clinton in the general election.

My friend’s message to them: If Hillary loses by a narrow margin, you will share the blame.

This is so unlike her. She has plenty of political opinions she shares privately, but on social media, she is relentlessly kind and uncontroversial.

She is also, however, so worried about the future of our country.

The ensuing discussion on her Facebook wall was spirited but never ugly. She was lucky. I’m not naming her, nor am I quoting her exact words, because I don’t want angry strangers to read this and hunt for her on Facebook.

Almost daily, I hear from women who want to either explain why they keep secret their support for Clinton or share their regret that they didn’t.

We veterans of the misogyny wars – women who are columnists, activists or in a leadership role of any kind – know how ugly it can get when a woman dares to share her opinion.

NEIGHBORS New tornado warning system dedicated in Fairdale DAILY CHRONICLE About 20 people assembled at the new tornado warning siren in Fairdale on April 22 to recognize the siren’s funding organization, Rotary District 6420 and the Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary club.

David Dosier, president of the Kishwaukee club, delivered some short comments to a mix of Rotarians and Fairdale residents. He emphasized that while they were there to recognize the efforts of Rotary, the organization was simply one contributor among many.

“Rotary is only one of many service organizations that contributed, and continue to contribute, to the recovery efforts here in Fairdale,” Dosier told the crowd. “We are one of many who donated time, money or material goods to help the residents of Fairdale get back on their feet. ... So, while the spotlight is on Rotary for these few minutes, let me emphasize that we are proud to be part of a much larger effort.”

Rotary District Governor Jim Nelson of Rockford was on hand for the ceremony and unveiled the bronze sign that now is mounted on the tower, recognizing Rotary’s role in providing the siren system.

Marcie Richardson, a resident of Fairdale, attended the ceremony as well. She recounted for the group that she wouldn’t have survived the tornado that hit Fairdale in April 2015, if she had been home. Luckily, she was away that day.

She testified that the new warning siren works well.

“It gave me quite a scare the first time they tested it, but I’m not complaining. I’m thankful for it,” she said.

Dosier finished by thanking Bill Nicklas and the DeKalb County Long Term Recovery Corp. for helping Rotary identify the need and facilitating the purchase and construction of the tower and system.

Summer music classes registration open DAILY CHRONICLE

Registration is due by June 6 for summer music classes for children at the Northern Illinois University Community School of the Arts.

The following classes are offered: Prelude is a group music class for toddlers ages 1 to 3 with singing, dancing and rhythm and music games. New songs and activities are added every semester. Laurie Rodriguez teaches this class, which meets from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturdays.

Development group music class is for children ages 3 to 5 and helps prepare little ones to begin music lessons.

Children enjoy more songs, dances and rhythm games as well as basic music theory and demonstrations of musical instruments. Laurie Rodriguez teaches this class, which meets from 10:35 to 11:05 a.m. Saturdays.

Prelude and Development classes meet June 25 through Aug. 6, with no class meeting on July 2. A parent or caregiver attends every class with their child. Early enrollment is recommended as these classes usually fill up quickly.

Guitar for Kids provides children ages 8 to 12 with an introduction to guitar playing through a fun, song-oriented approach to learning. Guitar teacher Quentin Dover introduces music fundamentals such as scales, chords, rhythm, melody, harmony and playing technique that allow students to begin building their own toolbox of musical skills. Group lessons foster an encouraging environment in which students can explore the art of making music. No previous guitar experience is required; however, students should bring a guitar to class.

A benefit dinner for Earnest Cagle will take place from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 11 at the Knights of Columbus, at 1336 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb.

Cagle was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer that has traveled to his lymph nodes. He was born in 1939 and served the country from 1956 to 1964 and also was active in the National Guard. He has three children, 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Federated Church donates to Open Door

Pastor Dan DeWitt of the Federated Church of Sandwich presented the Open Door Rehabilitation Center with a donation of $1,350 on May 23.

The donation was a result of proceeds from a bake sale and bazaar earlier in May at the church. The sale was solely for the purpose of raising funds for the Open Door.

“We are pleased to be able to make this donation,” DeWitt said in a news release. “Your organization is a tremendous asset to the community. We are thrilled at the sum we were able to donate to the rehabilitation center. Despite the weather, we had great turnout from the community.”

“Thirteen hundred dollars can go a long way to help them accomplish their goals, and we know that every dollar will be spent to help those in need,” he said in the release.

Church begins summer worship schedule

The Somonauk Leland Sandwich FFA has earned a spot at the national FFA convention again this fall, competing in the food science career development event (CDE). The team comprises (from left) Kara Klemm, Grace Ballas, Jenna Baker and Molly Toft. This is the third time in three years the chapter has won a state-level event and moved on to national competition. There are more than 300 FFA chapters across the state, and 20 competed at the state-level CDE. These competitive events help students showcase their knowledge on a career area in agriculture. With all four members placing within the top 12 in the state, this team edged out Iroquois West High School by 15 points on a 1,500-point scale to earn the top place. The FFA’s national convention will be in October.

The summer worship schedule will begin Sunday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 511 Russell Road in DeKalb.

A combined worship service will be at 9 a.m. each Sunday.

Although Sunday school for children will not resume until fall, adult Bible study will continue to be offered at 10:15 a.m.

SYCAMORE – Jack Mizgalski served as the hero who kept Sycamore’s baseball season alive with his walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Mendota, 7-4, Thursday night in a Class 3A Sycamore Regional semifinal.

With the bases loaded with two outs, Mizgalski stepped up to the plate with Sycamore (22-11) trailing Mendota (1915), 4-3. Mizgalski patiently waited for the pitch he liked and connected to put it over the left-field fence and extend the Spartans’ season.

“I was just thinking I had given up a three-run home run earlier to give them a 4-3 lead,” said Mizgalski, also the starter for the Spartans. “I was 0 for 3, and I was thinking the entire time I had to pick my team up because they did that for me all game. I didn’t remember much after that.”

Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said it was a huge swing in momentum for the Spartans.

“We had the bases loaded with two outs after two strikeouts in a row, and Jack hasn’t been swinging the bat well at all lately,” Cavanaugh said. “For Jack to do that in that type of situation is unbelievable. That’s two out of the last three regional games to end with a home run from us.”

Mizgalski gave up a 1-0 lead to the Trojans in the first inning but was able to keep his composure in the remaining four innings he was on the mound. The senior gave up three hits the rest of the game – one of them being a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Mizgalski finished his outing with six hits allowed, two walks and 11 strikeouts.

“My first inning, obviously, wasn’t the ideal first inning,” Mizgalski said.

“I gave up a few hits and a run scored, but I was just missing my spot. Once I started to hit my spots, they struggled at the plate a little bit.”

The Spartans regained a 3-1 lead in the second inning after six straight batters reached base. Sycamore was led at the plate by Mizgalski, who went 1 for 4 with four RBIs. Right fielder Jarod Montavon went 2 for 3 with an RBI. “I thought we were a base hit away

Third-seeded Freeport scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal an 8-7 victory from the fifth-seeded Cogs in a regional semifinal Thursday.

“There’s not a lot you can say,” Cogs coach Mike Lauer said. “It’s tough. It’s tough. ... I thought going in it would be close and it’d be a tight game. Little things are going to make a difference, and they did.”

The Cogs (19-13) broke a 6-all tie in the top of the seventh inning, when a single by senior Kelly Hensley got past the Freeport right fielder – allowing Hensley to advance to third – and then Hensley scored on a wild pitch.

The Pretzels (21-8) had a runner on second base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Haley Bunker hit an RBI double and Ashling Greene followed with a walk-off RBI single to the outfield. It was the only lead of the game for Freeport, which will play No.

2 Burlington Central in the final at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sycamore.

It was a big day offensively for the Cogs, with four players collecting a pair of hits.

Senior pitcher Kendyl Strack went 2 for 5 with a solo home run, senior second baseman Dani Mathey was 2 for 4, freshman center fielder Ashley Petersen was 2 for 3 with an RBI sacrifice fly and Hensley also added a threerun double in the top of the first.

However, the Cogs left five runners on base in the first two innings.

Freeport’s speedy leadoff hitter, Jordan Fleck, was 3 for 4, Taylor Murray was 2 for 4 with a two-run triple in the third and Bunker was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. The Pretzels also scored twice on runners who reached base on errors.

“We felt like we played well enough offensively to win, we just needed to make more plays defensively,” Lauer said. “I think defensively is where we’re disappointed. I didn’t think we’d

give up eight runs, by any means.”

After Strack’s home run to left field gave the Cogs a 4-1 lead in the top of the second, the Pretzels answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to tie it – thanks to Murray’s two-run triple.

However, the Cogs answered with two runs in the top of the fourth, but Genoa-Kingston sophomore Madison Wagner was thrown out at home to end the inning.

“Speed kills, we know that,” Lauer said. “We had a runner thrown out at home. They really put the pressure on you with their speed. They did a nice job.”

After Freeport tied it at 6 in the bottom of the sixth, the Cogs again answered with Hensley scoring on a wild pitch to retake the lead. However, the Pretzels’ two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh finished the wild contest.

Lauer said it will be tough for the Cogs, who would have met Burlington for a third time this season with a win, to replace their strong core of four seniors – Strack, Hensley, Mathey and Melissa Clemente.

“Nineteen wins is always nice to have – we wanted 20 or 21 or 22,” Lauer said. “It’s tough to see the seniors – we have a group of four really good seniors. It’s going to be tough for a while.

We’re going to have to do some things.

It’s sad because we feel like we’re a little short-ended here. If you get beat on Saturday, you can handle that a little better. We just felt we wanted a chance at Burlington a third time. It’s tough.”

MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland baseball team advanced to the Class 3A Kaneland Regional title game after starting pitcher Jake Violett led them to a 5-0 win over Plano on Thursday afternoon.

Violett was dominant for Kaneland (14-13), striking out 15 Plano batters.

The senior allowed six hits and only one walk, which was in the seventh inning.

“I was able to locate my off-speed pitches today and got ahead in the count,” Violett said. “Pitching is very important at this point in the season, including our relievers, who are some of our most important guys.”

Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said Violett “pitched a heck of a game.”

“When you can limit the fielders to only have to make six plays on defense in a game,” Aversa said, “that’s just great to see and it makes it easy for us.

Credit to Jake on getting the job done, and our guys responded with no errors in the field and made some really nice plays out there for him, and we just seemed to be clicking today.”

When a defense makes zero errors, confidence for a pitcher is boosted, Violett said.

“Knowing I have that kind of defense behind me just makes me want to attack the batters,” Violett said. “I want to show them my fastball and see if they can hit it because I know my guys behind me will help me out.”

The Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and had at least one hit in every inning except for the fifth. After scoring in the first two innings for a 4-0 lead, the Knights were unable to score another run until the sixth inning, where they added a run on three consecutive hits.

Kaneland was led at the plate by Luke Calabrese and Joe Laudont, who each had two RBIs. Both players went 2 for 4.

DeKalb baseball team rallied but fell short in a 6-5 loss to Harlem on Thursday in the conclusion of a Class 4A Belvidere North Regional semifinal.

The game resumed Thursday in the bottom of the second with the Huskies (24-7) ahead, 3-0, after rain and lightning postponed the game Wednesday.

Jake Perkins began the day on the hill in relief of Bryce Wheeler for the Barbs (12-18) and inherited a 0-1 count, striking out Brock Soter on two pitches.

“I thought we bounced back pretty well,” Keck said. “Once we got a couple hits, the kids really believed in themselves. Jake did a really nice job pitching early on, a two-pitch strikeout to start the afternoon was kind of interesting. But our guys fed into it.

We made things interesting. We forced Harlem to do some stuff they didn’t want to do, as far as their pitchers and stuff.”

But heading into the sixth, DeKalb was down, 6-1. But the Barbs rallied, and scored on back-to-back two-out, two-run singles by No. 8 batter Eric Nelson and No. 9 batter Jake Neidel.

“It shows their heart, their neversay-die attitude,” Keck said. “Even in the seventh, we’re chasing one, all year we didn’t get it, but at no point did a guy just leave a bat on their shoulder and just take it. We battled, and that’s all you can ask for.”

Harlem ace Thomas Chance came on to pitch the seventh, getting the Nos. 2 through 4 batters – Derek Kyler, Connor Hoyle and Dani Garcia – in the Barbs’ lineup on only eight pitches. He was the fourth pitcher of the day for the Huskies.

“I felt real good,” Keck said. “Any time you can roll things over, score some runs with the bottom of the order, you gotta love it. Obviously, I believe in one through nine – one through 18 actually – but to have two, three, four to start that inning, I believe we had a

chance. Obviously, Derek hit the ball right on the nose, one-hopper right to the shortstop, there’s not much you can do about that. Connor looked like he got fooled maybe a little bit on a straight change, and Dani just missed it a little bit, got under it a little bit, but still hit the ball.”

Harlem advances to face the winner of Friday’s semifinal between Jacobs and Belvidere North. Although that team will be playing on short rest, the Huskies go on having burned four pitchers – although Chance, the MVP of the conference, threw only eight pitches.

“This time of year, you can take what you can get,” Huskies coach Doug Livingston said. “It’s going to be a battle every time, and DeKalb has solid players on their team. We had to go through four pitchers to get this win. They didn’t make it easy on us.”

Although he didn’t pitch Thursday, Wheeler took the loss for the Barbs. Joey Sauser drove in the first run of the game for the Barbs in the fourth, and scored in the sixth as he had one of DeKalb’s seven hits in the game. Nathan Sisler was 0 for 2, but scored twice. Seven Barbs had one hit.

Keck said it was an “interesting” season for the Barbs, who ended the season on a 3-10 skid.

“It was definitely a season with its challenges, with different kids in and out of the lineup and things like that,” Keck said. “Some of that was out of our control as coaches, and even as kids. It was tough, but it was something we can build on. It’s something for our juniors and our sophomores to build on. Hopefully, our seniors had a good experience and they can remember this fondly as they move forward.”

Hunter Tiggelaar and Jack Fellabaum opened the boys tennis state championships with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to a Hinsdale Central on Thursday, but bounced back with two wins in the consolation bracket before being eliminated.

The DeKalb duo lost to Michael Czionka and Nick Calzolano, who still are alive in the championship bracket.

Tiggelaar and Fellabaum followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over T.J. Saas and Joe Medala from Brother Rice, and a 6-4, 7-5 win against Brendan Drinkard and Blake Van Niel from Homewood-Flossmoor.

Their season ended with a heartbreaking, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 10-4 loss to the St. Ignatius duo of Matthew Sherlock and Ian Waller.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Well, the White Sox still are in first place after a day in Kansas City.

Their rainout Thursday of the scheduled opener to a four-game series and 10-game road trip, coupled with an off day for the second-place Cleveland Indians, assured the Sox – who came to town riding a three-game losing streak and a skid of 11 Jose Abreu losses in 15 games – of maintaining their halfgame lead.

A silver lining? In their past two losses, Jose Abreu appeared to be finding his much-needed hitting stroke with three hits in each game.

“I don’t like to think about if they are pitching me inside or outside,” he said. “My focus is to swing at balls in the strike zone, not at pitches that are out of the zone. My focus is to get back to my good approach.”

CUBS

They are 6-6 in one-run games, 3-5 in two-run games, 2-1 in three-run games, 3-0 in four-run games and – are you ready for this? – 17-2 in games decided by five or more runs.

The higher the margin, the more you pretty much know which team is winning the game. Perhaps that’s the most impressive thing about a Cubs performance that has been, for more than a quarter of the season, transcendent. Every opponent is going in knowing it’ll have to hang on like grim death to beat them.

If there’s a downside to being the team that can’t be blown out, it’s being hit with a sizable share of narrow defeats – tough ones to swallow, as Wednesday’s 9-8 Cubs victory surely was for the Cardinals.

Only five National League teams have more one-run losses than the Cubs’ six.

“It’s hard when you lose by one run,” catcher Miguel

Any fan should be able to relate to that. Lopsided losses aren’t the ones that stick with you into the next day. It’s the close ones that leave players and fans with regrets, second-guesses and what-ifs.

Not everyone takes one-run losses as hard as Montero and Fowler.

“Whether we lose by one or by six, the one thing that matters with this team is, ‘Did we go out there and play our hardest?’ ” shortstop Addison Russell said. “The people we have in our clubhouse are warriors, man. They don’t give up or get down no matter what the score is. If we lose sight of the daily goal of playing our hardest, then we lose the goal entirely.”

First baseman Anthony Rizzo actually prefers a 2-1 heart-breaker to an 8-2 snoozer any day.

“Getting blown out, getting your tail kicked in, it’s way worse. Those are the ones I have a problem with,” he said. “You lose a one-run game, it’s just baseball. Playing in these close games battle-tests you throughout the year. The more, the better.”

NOT EVEN CLOSE

If there’s a single stat that continues to define these Cubs, it’s their monstrous season run differential of plus-119.

It’s a number that, like a raging wildfire or Bartolo Colon, seems never to stop growing. Even during their recent 4-8 stretch, which ended with Monday’s series opener in St. Louis, the Cubs had a run differential of plus-six.

Since their worst defeat of the season – a 13-5 debacle in Cincinnati nearly five weeks ago – the Cubs have gone 18-9.

The losses came by a total of 14 runs.

The wins? By 74.

And about that Cincinnati series: The Cubs still took three of four from the Reds – by a cartoonish aggregate score of 33-1. The four-game score was a slightly more respectable 38-14. Chicagoans would dance in the streets if the Bears ever beat the Bengals like that.

Warriors stay alive Pens into Cup Final

OAKLAND, Calif. – Stephen Curry scored 31 points, raising his arms in the early moments to awaken Golden State’s raucous crowd, and the defending champion Warriors staved off elimination with a 120-111 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals.

The MVP made a layup late and dished out six assists, while Klay Thompson added 27 points as Golden State sent the best the best-of-seven series back to Oklahoma City for Game 6 on Saturday night. Golden State trails 3-2 and is trying to become only the 10th team to rally from a 3-1 deficit.

“We’re not going home! We’re not going home!” Curry yelled at the top of his lungs in the waning moments.

Kevin Durant scored 40 points and Russell Westbrook added 31 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and five steals for the Thunder, trying for the fifth NBA Finals appearance in franchise history and chasing only the second championship after the 1978-79 Seattle SuperSonics won it all.

The record-setting, 73-win Warriors, coming off their first back-toback defeats all season, had been blown out in two losses at Oklahoma City by a combined 52 points.

Durant’s 3-pointer with 4:34 left got the Thunder within 103-98, then Curry answered with a three-point play.

Screening tests reveal teen issues Dear Dr. K: A friend of mine just took her teenager to the doctor for a checkup. The girl’s cholesterol was checked, and she was tested for HIV. What’s going on? Will my teenage daughter’s pediatrician do the same?

Dear Reader: The yearly checkup is the perfect time for a doctor to see how kids are growing and give any needed shots.

But it’s also an important time to see how they are doing more generally, and to help ensure they grow into healthy, happy adults.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has a checklist for pediatricians called “Recommendations for Preventive Pediatric Health Care.” These recommendations, which are updated every few years, are based on the most up-to-date research about the health of children now – and in the future.

I spoke to my colleague Claire McCarthy, a pediatrician at Boston Children’s Hospital. She mentioned most of the changes in the latest version of the AAP recommendations pertain to adolescents.

Here’s what the AAP thinks pediatricians should be doing with their preteen and teen patients: • Lipid screening. High cholesterol (particularly LDL cholesterol) and high triglycerides (another type of fat, or lipid) can damage blood vessels over time and lead to heart disease and stroke. It’s true heart disease from atherosclerosis (cholesterol-filled plaques) usually doesn’t become apparent until after age 50 or older. Many people are squeamish about staying in a room in which someone has died. I see no reason to banish these people to a hotel during their visit.
