Say what you will about knocking wood ... POLL I have been jinxing myself lately.

The trouble started a few weeks ago. I was walking to the St. Mary’s Memorial Hall banquet center in Sycamore with Brett Rowland, the Daily Chronicle’s news editor. We were talking about sunglasses.

Brett buys cheap sunglasses. I have a weakness for expensive ones.

“One of the good things about buying expensive sunglasses,” I said at the time, “is that you don’t let yourself lose them.”

Last week, I lost my sunglasses.

Yes, I am bummed out about it, thank you.

I’d had that pair of Maui Jim black aviators for a year and a half.

I think they fell out of my jacket pocket while I was at one of my daughters’ softball games in Sycamore, but I can’t say for sure. They’re just gone.

Then on Monday, I said to Brett – who was taking me apart in a game of chess during our lunch break – that things tend to slow down in DeKalb once the students leave Northern Illinois University.

Not 10 minutes later, we learn that there’s been a bomb threat at Clinton Rosette Middle

Am I a person who knocks on wood? Usually, I am, and if that makes me a superstitious fool, well, so be it.

All I know is that I forgot to do it after both of these ill-fated statements, and look what happened.

Luckily, the bomb threat turned out to be nothing more than a time-wasting hoax. Maybe whoever did it will brag to their friends about the trouble they caused and it will catch up to them.

Also, if you happen to find my sunglasses, maybe let me know? Or enjoy them as I did, at least – they weren’t cheap.

VA Secretary compares health-care lines to Disney

WASHINGTON – Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald said Monday that the VA should not use wait times as a measure of success, comparing waits for VA health care to the hours people wait for rides at Disney theme parks.

“When you go to Disney, do they measure the number of hours you wait in line? Or what’s important? What’s important is, what’s your satisfaction with the experience?” McDonald said during a Christian Science Monitor breakfast on Monday. “And what I would like to move to, eventually, is that kind of measure.”

McDonald’s comments set off a political firestorm, with Republicans denouncing the remarks as inaccurate and inappropriate.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., called McDonald’s comments “flippant” and said they show “just how seriously the Obama administration’s VA is taking life or death problems” at the agency.

McDonald took office in July 2014 after his predecessor was forced out amid a scandal over chronically long wait times at VA health care

TODAY’S TALKER sites and reports that as many as 40 patients died while awaiting care at the Phoenix VA hospital. Similar problems were discovered at VA health sites nationwide, along with a widespread practice among VA employees of creating secret lists to cover up the long wait times and receive VA bonuses.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and a longtime veterans’ advocate, called McDonald’s comment “outrageous and completely inappropriate,” especially since McDonald himself is an Army veteran.

“Our veterans aren’t in line for a theme park ride – they are in desperate need of timely access to quality medical treatment,” McCain said.

“The VA secretary’s statement reflects a fundamental lack of understanding about the serious problems plaguing veterans’ health care.”

Citizens Against Government Waste, a nonpartisan watchdog group, said McDonald was “playing the role of ‘Dumbo’ in his very own ‘Fantasyland.’ Disney does, in fact, monitor how long its customers wait in line because they have the astonishingly simple belief that serving their customers quickly and efficiently is the best measure of overall performance.”

Automated bomb threat at Clinton Rosette Middle School could be ‘swatting’ DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Clinton Rosette Middle School on Monday was one of several schools around the country that received what appeared to be an automated call making a bomb threat, authorities said.

DeKalb School District 428 Superintendent Doug Moeller said the school’s main office received the call at 11:25 a.m., and administrators ordered everyone out of the building.

“We knew within eight minutes that every student was safe, every staff member was safe and the building was clear (of people),” Moeller said.

The bomb threat was one of several reported Monday at schools across the U.S., many of them under similar circumstances. The Associated Press reported that schools in Colorado, Utah, Delaware, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Wisconsin all received similar threats as part of a national campaign of “swatting” – triggering an official response based on a false report of a high-level threat situation. Media outlets in the United Kingdom also reported evacuations.

The calls were placed to elementary, middle and high schools. Some did not evacuate because the threats were described as “automated.”

The incident appears to be similar to what is being reported around the country, but local authorities are not going to jump to conclusions without investigating local leads, DeKalb Deputy Police Chief John Petragallo said.

“The end result, everyone being safe, is what we want,” Petragallo said. “So now we just have to backtrack to try to find the source of the threat.

“Could it be complicated? Yes. So we’ll use all our resources, and that could include contacting state and federal officials. We definitely want to get to the bottom of it.”

A search of the school with bomb-sniffing dogs turned up no suspicious items, he said.

Shortly after the call was made to Clinton Rosette, school officials had students wait a safe distance from the school, then loaded them onto buses on First Street and took them to the DeKalb Park District Sports and Recreation Center, 1765 S. Fourth St., DeKalb.

At 12:22 p.m., the school district told parents about the bomb threat and evacuation. Parents were told they could pick up their children at the rec center.

Traffic was backed up on Fourth Street as parents rushed to pick up their children.

Among them was Fred Paoletta, whose daughter, Elaine, is a seventh-grader at Clinton Rosette. Paoletta said his wife had called and told him about the situation Monday afternoon.

“The bomb threat I was hoping was a prank,” Paoletta said. “I didn’t immediately think anything other than that.”

Paoletta said it was alarming to think about his daughter being in jeopardy.

“I’m a veteran, I know what can hap-

pen,” he said. “I got scared.”

Elaine Paoletta said the evacuation unfolded just as a drill would at first, but then seemed like something more the longer students spent waiting outside the building.

“I was getting a little antsy,” she said. “I thought, ‘What is actually going on,’ because my teacher didn’t know what was happening. “... When they lined us up to get on the bus, our principal told us that it was a bomb threat, and I was … a little freaked out about it. I was making sure all my friends were safe; I was texting

them and making sure everybody is OK.” Elaine Paoletta said she felt better after leaving the school.

Extracurricular activities at the school were canceled, although a joint band concert with Huntley Middle School students would go on as scheduled, Moeller said.

Moeller said this was the first bomb threat he had encountered since he started with the district in 2009.

“We practice this (evacuation) protocol often, and today it went off without a hitch,” Moeller said.

He said Monday evening that he had not been aware that schools around the country had been receiving similar threats.

“This is the first I’ve heard of it,” Moeller said. “At the time we were not aware of any of these schools anywhere (receiving threats).”

Most of the students were picked up by parents before 2 p.m. The rest were taken to DeKalb High School and put on their regular bus routes, Moeller said.

Tyler Elementary School will have an evacuation drill today, according to an automated message the district sent Monday afternoon.

Farm machinery flips after close call near DeKalb DAILY CHRONICLE

MALTA – A close call between a tractor and an oncoming vehicle Monday led to a piece of farm machinery overturning, but no injuries, police said.

The incident occurred about 9:35 a.m. Monday on University Road, south of Malta. DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies said a tractor pulling a soil finisher was driving north on University near the intersection of Gurler Road when an oncoming vehicle approached, driving too close to the center line. The tractor driver, Nicholas Smith, 33, of 400 block of Robinson Street, Earlville, was forced to move off the shoulder by the southbound vehicle, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. The soil finisher went down into the east ditch, broke free from the tractor and overturned. It landed upside down.

The John Deere tractor remained upright and there were no injuries, police said.

DeKalb police chief shares vision with City Council

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery’s crime fighting plan includes programs centered on fortifying police-community relations, tackling growing cyber offenses and addressing heroin use, he told city officials.

“I think the goal, overall, is to connect with all residents,” Lowery said.

The police chief said there is no set timetable for rolling out and implementing the “20/20 Vision for the Future: Phase Two” plan that he presented to City Council members at their Committee of the Whole meeting Monday.

Also, police personnel will have to take on more duties as the chief explained that he doesn’t plan to increase his $12 million budget to pay for any of the efforts.

One of the things the plan calls for is making the popular Camp Power program, which started with youth in University Village, accessible in an additional locale.

The city is teaming up with Kishwaukee YMCA to help fund the mentoring, nutrition and leadership program, and also offer it to residents of

the Pleasant Street area.

“It was another neighborhood that had seen some stressors. There were more calls for service by the police, there were some quality of life issues in the neighborhood,” said Lowery, pointing out trends indicated in the police department’s 2015 annual report.

“We also know the investment in youth is so important,” he added.

“Sometimes to break a paradigm or to change a paradigm, we have to [focus on] the kids.”

Michael Marquardt, 3rd Ward alderman, said that the Pleasant Street area, located in his ward, has changed, but overall is safe.

He is pleased to see Camp Power offered in his neighborhood and supports the chief’s overall plan, he said.

OBITUARIES STEVE CHIDESTER Steve Chidester, age 44, of Cortland, died tragically while working on road detail for KDOT, Thursday, May 19, 2016. In a blink of an eye, a life was lost, worlds were shattered and in the wake of an inexplicable accident, a devoted wife, loving family and proud parents struggle to carry on.

Steve’s life, love and friendship touched so many, and his loss has touched so many more.

His spirit lives on through his legacy and Steve’s memory will never diminish. The broken hearts will mend, but will forever carry a piece of him in the shadows of their lives.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine; his parents, Larry and Sandi Chidester; two siblings, Tammy Lynn (Bill) Miller and Shellie Kay (Daniel) Sparks; his mother-in-law, Lucy Bradley; sisterin-law, Annie Ruelas; nephews, Travis Miller, Dominic Ruelas and Adryan Ruelas; nieces, Olivia Miller and Alanna Ruelas; many aunts, uncles and cousins; his best four-legged friend, Gracie; a countryside of family, friends and “Klap-LindSter’s Clan” – you know who you are.

He is preceded in death by his daughter Alyssa Lee Chidester; his paternal grandparents, Lawerance and Beverly Chidester; and his maternal grandparents, Stephen and Ruth Dawson; and his faithful dog, Montana Marie.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at the St. Charles United Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., St., Charles, IL 60175. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, also at the church, with a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. The Rev. David Pattee, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Kathy Lawes, will officiate with private family interment to follow cremation at a later date.

Born: Feb. 6, 1929; in Elgin, IL Died: May 8, 2016; in Sycamore, IL

Richard “Dick” L. Pearson peacefully passed away due to complications relating from colon cancer on Sunday, May 8, 2016, at his Sycamore, IL home and surrounded by family. He was 87 years young.

Dick was born on Feb. 6, 1929, to Spainer and Inez Pearson in Elgin, IL. After graduating from Maple Park High School in 1947, he attended Monmouth College for one year and, in 1949, earned a junior accounting degree from Ellis Business College.

On Nov. 29, 1949, Dick married Martha Self, to whom he was married until her death in 2000.

After making their initial home in St. Charles, IL, where he worked for Hotel Baker, Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a yeoman for four years.

While he was stationed in Norfolk, VA, both Roger and Sally were born. After leaving the Navy, Dick attended Worsham College of Mortuary Science.

Upon his 1956 graduation, he accepted a job at Coultrip Funeral Home and moved his family to Sycamore where his youngest son Ric was born and the children attended school. LOCAL BRIEF Crash sends Sycamore police officer to hospital

SYCAMORE – A Sycamore police officer responding to an emergency call with his emergency equipment activated collided with another car Monday and was taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t believed to be life-threatening.

Sycamore officer Steven Elbrecht, 52, was driving south on Peace Road shortly after 1 p.m. Monday in a Sycamore squad car, a 2014 Chevrolet Impala, with “emergency equipment activated,” according a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Tyler Banta, 19, of the 1200 block of Highpointe Drive, DeKalb, was driving a silver 2000 Mazda east on West State Street. He did not see the police car because of other vehicles in traffic and collided with the police car in the intersection, the release said.

Hospital, Banta was uninjured, the release said. Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene, according to the release.

Monday’s crash marked the second time this year that a Sycamore police officer was involved in a collision.

In March, a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Sue E. Scott, 72, of the 600 block of Windsor Drive in Sycamore, was hit by a Sycamore police vehicle driven by officer Johnathon S. Miller, 31.

Miller had activated the lights and siren on his 2014 Ford Explorer to pursue a driver on DeKalb Avenue and went through a red light at the intersection.

Scott had a green light at the intersection and was crossing DeKalb Avenue when her vehicle was hit on the driver’s side by the police vehicle. Both were transported to Kishwaukee Hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

SYCAMORE – Sycamore School District 427 board members are expected to vote today on whether to reduce the amount of impact fees the district collects from homebuilders.

The district’s portion of impact fees, which go toward schools’ purchase, construction, or modification of land hasn’t been adjusted since 2005, Superintendent Kathy Countryman said at the board’s May 10 meeting.

Until now the district hadn’t touched the fees since before Sycamore Middle School was remodeled, board President Jim Dombek said.

The remodeling work made the school capable of housing more students.

Now the district is faced with a decrease in property value – which is estimated at $99,375 per acre – and an increase in Sycamore Middle School student capacity, Dombek said.

The suggested change would mean a $200 drop in fees for single-family homes. Projected figures for three-bedroom single-family homes propose collecting: $2,453 from detached homes, $1,107 from attached homes and $1,599 from apartment units, board documents show.

The board also will decide whether to update the numbers used to calculate the district’s impact fee distribution every two to three years.

If the proposal is approved, it will likely go before the City Council in June.

“I know sometimes that’s going to cut against us and we’re going to lose some revenue because property values go down, and there will be other times in the cycle when property values go up and that will help us a little more,” Dombek said.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. today at the district Administration Building, 245 W. Exchange St., Sycamore.

Man makes threat with knife near Sandwich eatery, grabs for officer’s gun

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Sandwich man who police said threatened another man with a knife and then tried to take an officer’s gun was being held Monday at the DeKalb County Jail.

Tahece H. Moore, 41, of the 300 block of Wilshire Drive, Sandwich, is charged with disarming a peace officer, resisting a peace officer and disorderly conduct. If convicted of the most serious charge, disarming a peace officer, he could face three to seven years in prison.

DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery set Moore’s bond at $150,000 Monday, meaning he must post $15,000 bail to be released from jail. Should Moore post bail, he would be required to wear an electronic home-monitoring bracelet, Montgomery said.

LOCAL BRIEFS Health officials help with measles vaccine recommendations

Police responded to a call about 11 a.m. at Brother’s Restaurant and Lounge, 512 E. Church St., Sandwich.

A man had reportedly approached a customer outside the business and told him, “You’re wearing the wrong colors,” while holding a knife, court records show.

When police arrived, they saw Moore in a field behind the restaurant, walking in the direction in which the suspect was reported to have headed.

Moore also fit the description of the suspect, court records show.

Officers used a stun gun on Moore after he tried to pull away from them during a pat-down search, and while he was on the ground, Moore reached up and grabbed an officer’s holster and said, “I got your gun.”

Police used the stun gun on Moore again and arrested him, court records show.

He is due back in court June 6.

DeKALB – The DeKalb County Health Department released additional information about measles vaccine recommendations after a family member of a Northern Illinois University student who graduated during the 1:30 p.m. ceremony May 14 at the NIU Convocation Center was diagnosed with measles.

The person visited several places in DeKalb.

The recommendations include: • Measles, mumps rubella vaccine is recommended routinely for all children from age 12 through 15 months, with a second dose from age 4 through 6 years.

• Adults with no evidence of immunity (defined as documented receipt of 1 dose – two doses four weeks apart if high risk – of live measles virus-containing vaccine, laboratory evidence of immunity or laboratory confirmation of disease, or birth before 1957) should get one dose of MMR unless the adult is in a high-risk group.

High-risk people need two doses and include health care personnel, international travelers, students at post-high school

CHICAGO – A plan to make Illinois the next state to allow automatic voter registration is moving through the Legislature despite the state’s leading election authority having serious doubts that it has the ability and money to roll it out, especially with one deadline before November’s election.

After the Senate easily approved it, the House is poised to take up a proposal in the coming days making the State Board of Elections the clearinghouse for automatically registering voters.

By Sept. 1, the board would have to conduct a voter file update with state agencies’ data going back a year. The whole plan would be in place by 2018.

Similar to laws in Oregon, California, West Virginia and Vermont, the Illinois plan would allow voters to opt out of automatic registration. Democrats, including those in the House where a committee listed it on a Sunday agenda, say it’ll increase civic participation and modernize systems. Inmate says Drew Peterson admitted to killing missing wife

CHESTER – A prison inmate whom Drew Peterson allegedly enlisted to kill a state’s attorney said the former suburban Chicago police officer also admitted killing his missing fourth wife.

The Chicago Tribune reported Antonio Smith testified Monday that the ex-Bolingbrook sergeant referred to Stacy Peterson as a “dead woman” while discussing how to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

Peterson never has been charged in Stacy Peterson’s disappearance and has maintained his innocence.

He is serving a 38-year sentence in the 2004 death of ex-wife Kathleen Savio in a case

High court says it won’t reconsider Blagojevich case

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court won’t reconsider its decision to reject former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s appeal of his corruption convictions.

The justices Monday denied without comment a long-shot petition urging the court to take another look at the case.

The court first turned down Blagojevich’s appeal March 28.

He challenged an appeals court ruling that said he crossed the line when he sought money in exchange for naming someone to fill the vacant Senate seat once occupied by President Barack Obama.

Batavia man to finish 50-state marathon quest in Michigan

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – An Illinois man is set to complete his goal of running a marathon in all 50 states after he makes it across the finish line at a 26-mile race in Michigan.

Kevin Ely of Batavia will run Saturday in the 34th annual Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported.

Ely initially began his quest to run 50 marathons in 50 states as a personal goal. He had already checked 13 states off the list when he attended an expo in California, where he learned

Illinois farmers see changes in property tax assessments

CARBONDALE – Illinois farmers are paying attention to assessed land value as they pay their 2016 property taxes because of a remedy to a disparity that hinged on soil quality.

In Illinois, calculating the value of cropland takes soil productivity into account. Central Illinois acreage with better soil is valued higher for tax purposes.

Southern Illinois’ less-productive acreage is valued lower. State law had held value changes to 10 percent a year. That meant the assessed value of lower-quality soils was held artificially low.

A fix was enacted in 2013, limiting value changes to 10 percent of the state median cropland productivity value.

The change reportedly means values on lower-quality soil will increase at a faster rate. Properties with better soil will increase at a slower rate.

Top court nixes all-white jury verdict, death sentence A state trooper was shot in the WASHINGTON –The Supreme Court upended the conviction and death sentence of a black Georgia man Monday because prosecutors violated the Constitution by excluding African-Americans from the all-white jury that determined his fate.

The 7-1 ruling in favor of death row inmate Timothy Tyrone Foster came in a case in which defense lawyers obtained strikingly frank notes from prosecutors detailing efforts to keep African-Americans off Foster’s jury. The decision broke no new ground in efforts to fight racial discrimination in jury selection, but underscored the importance of a 30-year-old high court ruling that took aim at the exclusion of minorities from juries.

Man suspected in officer’s slaying had lengthy record

BOSTON – The man suspected of killing a Massachusetts police officer during a weekend traffic stop had a lengthy criminal record and had been released from a maximum-security prison in 2013, officials said Monday.

The suspect, Jorge Zambrano, 35, was fatally shot by police late Sunday after he fired at them from a bedroom closet inside a duplex apartment in Oxford, investigators said.

Oxford is about 7 miles from Auburn, where police Officer Ronald Tarentino was fatally

The trooper underwent surgery Sunday night and was recovering in the hospital Monday.

Woman, girl hospitalized after shark attacks

Officials said an 11-year-old girl and a 57-year-old woman were taken to hospitals after they were bitten by sharks at separate locations in Florida.

Multiple news agencies report the first attack took place Saturday afternoon when the girl was swimming in Jacksonville. Family members told news outlets the girl was bitten on her back, arm and hand. She was hospitalized and will need surgery.

The second attack took place Sunday afternoon in Vero Beach, about 200 miles south of the first incident. Police said a shark bit Mary Marcus, 57, in the leg as she swam about 100 yards off the beach. She was taken to the hospital with injuries not deemed to be life-threatening.

Baltimore officer cleared of all charges in Freddie Gray case

BALTIMORE – Prosecutors failed for the second time in their bid to hold Baltimore police accountable for the arrest and death of Freddie Gray when an officer was acquitted Monday in the racially charged case that triggered riots a year ago.

A judge cleared Officer Edward Nero of assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct, concluding that Nero played little role in Gray’s arrest and wasn’t responsible for the failure to buckle the black man into the police van where he suffered a broken neck.

Upon hearing the verdict, Nero hugged his attorney and appeared to wipe away a tear.

Nero, who is white, was the second of six officers charged in the case to stand trial. The manslaughter case against Officer William Porter ended in a mistrial in December when the jury deadlocked. Prosecutors plan to retry him in September.

Nero’s lawyers said he and his wife and family are “elated that this nightmare is finally over.”

“The state’s attorney for Baltimore City rushed to charge him, as well as the other five officers, completely disregarding the facts of the case and the applicable law,” they said in a statement.

Prosecutors had no comment; they are under a gag order.

Trial No. 3 – that of van driver Caesar Goodson, who prosecutors believe is most culpable in Gray’s death – is set to begin in

two weeks. He is charged with second-degree murder.

David Weinstein, a Florida attorney and former federal civil-rights prosecutor who has been following the case, said the verdict probably will serve as a “wake-up call” for prosecutors.

“This speaks to the notion a lot of people had when this first happened, which is that it was a rush to judgment,” Weinstein said.

“The state’s attorney was trying to balance what she had with the public outcry and call to action given the climate in Baltimore and across the U.S. concerning policing, and I think she was overreaching.”

Gray died a week after suffering a spinal injury in the back of the van while he was handcuffed and shackled but not belted in.

His death set off looting and arson that prompted authorities to declare a citywide curfew and call out the National Guard to quell unrest in Baltimore for the first time since the riots that erupted in 1968 over the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Gray’s name became a rallying cry in the growing furor over the deaths of black men in clashes with police.

Nero, 30, waived his right to a jury trial, choosing instead to let Circuit Judge Barry Williams decide his fate. The assault charge alone carried up to 10 years in prison.

“The state’s theory has been one of recklessness and negligence,” the judge said in his ruling. “There has been no evidence that the defendant intended for a crime to occur.”

BERLIN – Bayer’s potential acquisition of Monsanto would create a giant seed and farm chemical company with a strong footprint in the U.S., Europe and Asia, combining two businesses with complementary geographical focus.

But Bayer might have to shed part of its business because of anti-trust concerns. And the price tag on any deal would be huge: Monsanto’s market value is around $42 billion.

Germany-based Bayer AG said Thursday in a short statement that its executives had met recently with their Monsanto counterparts “to privately discuss a negotiated acquisition” of the specialist in genetically modified crop seeds.

The news of a potentially costly deal sent Bayer shares tumbling. They were down 8.6 percent at 88.10 euros in afternoon trading Europe time. Monsanto shares were 5.0 percent higher at $101.98 in New York.

Both companies are familiar brands on farms around the globe. Bayer, whose farm business produces seeds as well as compounds to kill weeds, bugs and fungus, said the proposed acqui-

pesticides and a strong presence in the U.S. corn and soybean seed business.

Huwald said that the two companies do overlap in their vegetable and cotton seed business, which could require divestments because of anti-trust issues. Bayer also might have to sell parts of its weed-killer business.

Anti-trust regulators can scrutinize mergers and takeovers and block them if they hinder free-market competition.

If companies get too much control over a market, they can charge higher prices and have fewer incentives to innovate.

News of the talks comes after a wave of consolidation in the chemicals industry: DuPont and Dow Chemical agreed to combine last year, and ChemChina agreed to buy Syngenta of Switzerland in March after Monsanto’s own bid for its Basel-based rival failed.

Monsanto has about 20,000 employees and produces seeds for fruits, vegetables and other crops including corn, soybeans and cotton, as well as the popular weed-killer Roundup.

Its sales have suffered recently as falling crop prices have reduced farmers’ spending on its genetically enhanced seeds. Meanwhile, the strong U.S. dollar has meant its products are more expensive overseas.

Riccardi’s to reopen as late-night diner in June

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A longtime Sycamore hot dog joint, Riccardi’s Red Hots, will reopen in June as State Street Diner, new owner Danny Carney said.

Carney, who also owns Joker’s Bar and Grille, 530 N. Main St. in Sycamore, took over the former Riccardi’s site in late April, when the restaurant’s owners officially shut down the business. The building, 418 W. State St. in Sycamore, is undergoing minor renovations before its grand opening scheduled for June 1.

“I’m just mainly cleaning it up, and adding new equipment in the kitchen,” Carney said.

“I’m adding a charbroiler, a couple deep fryers so we can do fish fries, and we’re adding a TV.” Though the restaurant’s menu isn’t complete, it will include burgers, fries and ice cream, and eventually alcohol, he said.

“There are plenty of burgers on the menu – more charbroiled versus pan-fried. We’ll offer dinner options and a lot of different types of desserts with our homemade ice cream,” he said.

“We’re still going to do the late-night business on the weekends.”

Carney said he would also like to apply for a liquor license, although he hasn’t yet.

State Street Diner will operate from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

“If you wanted to eat healthy it wasn’t the place to be, but they still had good food and ice cream. I know we would go to the museum with our grandchildren, and then go to the movies and Riccardi’s without getting in the car,” Mundy said. “We’re sorry that they are going out and we wish Dan Carney good luck in reopening in the area.”

Activity no substitute for real achievement You may have read the Illinois General Assembly has been active during this past month of the legislative session, which is scheduled to end May 31.

And indeed, legislators have kept themselves busy.

Only Wednesday, the House followed the Senate’s lead by approving a bill to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana in Illinois.

The House and Senate approved a bill to restrict how police use stingrays, or devices that mimic cell towers, in order to track phone locations in criminal investigations.

The Senate approved a bill to legalize daily fantasy sports betting.

Senators approved a bill to allow automatic voter registration in Illinois.

The House approved a bill to increase wages for workers who care for senior citizens.

And lawmakers approved a measure to fully fund tuition grants for low-income students.

In a normal year, such activity would be expected and entirely acceptable.

However, this is anything but a normal year.

Illinois state government has gone 326 days without a budget for fiscal 2016.

Much of the government is funded through court orders, but key areas – human services, colleges and universities, MAP grants for low-income students, soil and water conservation districts among them – have not been adequately funded, or haven’t been funded at all.

The result is uncertainty, pain and existential threats to service providers across the state.

Meanwhile, state spending continues to outpace revenues – despite the Illinois Constitution forbidding it.

State debt continues to rise.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Months-long delays in payments to vendors continue.

And no solution has been forthcoming to deal with the state’s massive unfunded pension obligations, pegged at well over $100 billion.

Providing a backdrop to the lack of state budgets so far for this year and next is the state’s sluggish economy. While the U.S. unemployment rate stands at 5 percent, Illinois’ jobless figures have gone up the past half year, rising to 6.6 percent in April.

The Legislature has the authority and responsibility to address and solve the major problems faced by the state.

That would signify real achievement.

And that’s what lawmakers are elected to do.

But in Illinois, many lawmakers are more worried about keeping their jobs than making hard decisions that might rile constituents.

They apparently hope to fool voters into thinking the Legislature is doing important work.

They hope their activities with marijuana legalization and automatic voter registration and fantasy sports betting mask their inactivity on the state’s dire financial straits.

Well, the people know better.

They know activity is no substitute for achievement.

They know Illinois is in real trouble.

They know the ship is sinking.

They know lawmakers have 10 days to make tough decisions to right the ship.

And they know lawmakers scurrying to rearrange deck chairs on the Good Ship Illinois just won’t cut it.

The soon-to-end session might merely consist of more busywork from politicians.

Or it could be marked by real achievement from statesmen and stateswomen.

The choice is theirs.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Speaker Madigan has blocked progress in Springfield To the Editor: The Speaker has spoken.

I am delighted to read in his letter to the editor May 21 that Illinois Speaker of the House Michael Madigan wants not only a budget for 2016, but also 2017.

As the maestro of the Legislature, he can make anything happen. I am just afraid of what that budget will do.

If any of the bills the Speaker has sponsored over the past 11 months are any indication, his budget will underestimate program costs and overestimate revenue.

In other words, the policies that have created a $7.5 billion backlog of state bills, $120 billion of unpaid pension obligations and the exodus of residents, students and jobs from our state will continue.

The Speaker attributed the success of passing six bipartisan budget proposals over the past year to Gov. Bruce Rauner abandoning his efforts to change the direction of our state.

As one who supported those six proposals, I know they passed because they had a source of revenue to pay for them.

That is one of the reasons every other spending bill has lacked my support.

Let me be clear, the battle in Springfield has not been over saving the middle class, supporting our students and institutions of higher education, or helping the most vulnerable in our society. I join nearly every other legislator in wanting to do those things.

The battle is over the failure to balance spending with available revenue and setting the right priorities.

As one who sits on two of the five House appropriations committees (elementary and secondary education, and higher education), I want a budget that supports education, assists those in need and creates a climate to grow the economy.

But again this year, the Speaker, who controls the process, has not allowed those committees to craft a desperately needed budget.

This week we will see the Speaker’s budget. I want to support passing a balanced budget that meets the needs of our residents and doesn’t overburden taxpayers.

VIEWS Michael Barone account for a large share of the national murder toll is, in historical perspective, very dire indeed. The most accurate word is “unprecedented.”

The only double-digit increases in national murder statistics going back to 1960 are 13 percent (in 1968), 11 percent (in 1966, 1967 and 1971) and 10 percent (in 1979).

As anyone familiar with the workings of compound interest might guess, such increases rapidly added up. The total number of homicides nationally more than doubled between 1966 and 1979. The number peaked in 1991.

During those years, most academic criminologists argued that high rates of violent crime resulted from economic distress and – noting nearly half of murders were committed by blacks – from the endemic racism in American society. Today the Brennan Center echoes this analysis: “Economic deterioration of those cities could be a contributor to murder increases.”

Political scientist James Wilson and maverick criminologist George Kelling dissented from this view. In their 1982 Atlantic article “Broken Windows,” they argued proactive policing and

elimination of signs of disorder (such as broken windows) could sharply reduce crime rates.

In the 1990s New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton put the “broken windows” theory into practice. Their proactive policing tactics were continued by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and widely imitated and adapted around the country.

The result was that homicides in New York were reduced from 2,445 in 1990 to 328 in 2014. Nationally, the number of murders declined 42 percent from 1991 to 2014.

The definitive chronicler of proactive policing, the Manhattan Institute’s Heather Mac Donald, spotlighted the Ferguson effect in a Wall Street Journal article in May 2015. She noted that arrests were sharply down in cities such as St. Louis and Baltimore because the “incessant drumbeat against the police” across the country had “officers scale back on proactive policing under the onslaught of anti-cop rhetoric.”

Those encouraging such rhetoric include President Obama and his first attorney general, Eric Holder – even though an intensive Justice Department investigation of Brown’s killing in Ferguson cleared the officer involved and made clear that charges that Brown had put up his hands and surrendered were baseless.

Obama has since said “there’s no

data to support” a Ferguson effect.

That puts him at odds with his appointee FBI Director James Comey, who said his conversations with police officials around the country convinced him there are “marginal pullbacks by lots and lots of police officers.” It also put Obama at odds with Rosenfeld, who has found clear evidence of “de-policing” in Baltimore and Chicago, where homicides have spiked.

The charge of cherry-picking data and misleading rhetoric can more justifiably be leveled against administration officials and mainstream media, who, after the Ferguson killing, created the impression of a rising epidemic of racist police officers shooting innocent blacks. The few such cases have received prompt and stern attention from local law enforcement.

Black Americans were the primary victims of the huge crime increase starting in the late 1960s, and they will be the primary victims again if the Ferguson effect continues to result in more homicides. Can’t we prevent this awful history from repeating itself?

Raising minimum age for tobacco would only benefit Illinois neighbors

Executive vice president, Illinois Association of Convenience Stores Are Illinois lawmakers once again trying to bolster neighboring states’ economies? With newly proposed tobacco legislation that would drive consumers to buy goods across the border, it sure seems that way.

The proposed legislation, which has passed in the Senate and is moving next to the House, would change the existing minimum age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21, and if passed, Illinois would be the only state in the Midwest to raise the minimum age from the federally regulated age of 18.

Not only is there no evidence that raising the minimum age prevents smoking, but doing so would also hurt Illinois communities, particularly those right on the border.

Our communities are already starving for economic opportunity, but instead of providing an environment for growth, lawmakers continually create higher taxes that in turn make

businesses less competitive. Having to deal with high fuel and sales taxes and already high tobacco taxes, local gas stations and convenience stores routinely watch as sales bypass them completely for more friendly prices in other states.

We need laws that strengthen Illinois businesses and communities, instead of hurting them with more legislation that has not proved to be effective.

If this tobacco legislation were to pass, it would just be another move to hurt local businesses and would lead to even fewer sales. Consumers are always looking for the easiest, most convenient way to obtain goods, and if that means crossing into neighboring states, Illinois misses out. When consumers buy tobacco outside of Illinois, what is stopping them from purchasing other household goods, such as lottery tickets, food, candy and gas across the border as well, especially if they’re less expensive?

The fact is this proposed legislation doesn’t take our state’s financial well-being into account. This measure

would advance the interests of other states that use the federal minimum age and allow them to have an even larger advantage over Illinois than they already have. And when it’s all said and done, we lose out on more than just sales, but much-needed tax revenue.

The federal minimum age is set at 18 because there has been no indication that raising it would prevent individuals from smoking. Additionally, the Federal Tobacco Control Act of 2009 requires the FDA to study the public health implications of raising the minimum age, and their findings have just been submitted to Congress.

Before Illinois moves on this issue, lawmakers should first see what the federal government determines from the report, especially seeing as how moving the age from 18 to 21 seems like an arbitrary leap.

In our society, we entrust 18-yearolds to serve in our military, participate in elections and sit on juries. But by passing this law, Illinois would be stating that they should not be trusted to make the decision on whether to smoke.

It is important to support tobacco prevention methods, but the fact is that this measure does not tackle the issue in the right way. Instead of focusing on the minimum age, our state needs to focus on comprehensive underage access prevention legislation and invest in organizations that provide programs designed to promote healthy development.

Through these tactics, we have seen cigarette smoking among eighth-, 10thand 12th-graders decline from a peak of 28 percent in 1997 to a record low of 7 percent in 2015. In Illinois alone, tobacco use among 12- to 17-year-olds has declined from 13 percent in 2007 to less than 7 percent in 2014.

So again, I ask why Illinois lawmakers intend to pass this legislation.

It seems the only ones that benefit are businesses right across the Illinois border who are more than happy to take our business.

University of Missouri at St. Louis criminologist Richard Rosenfeld has had “second thoughts.” Like many academic criminologists, he had pooh-poohed charges that skyrocketing murder rates in many cities in 2015 and 2016 result from a “Ferguson effect” – a skittering back from proactive policing for fear of accusations of racism such as those that followed the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014.

Now, after looking over 2015 data from 56 large cities, he’s changed his mind. Homicides in those cities were up 17 percent from 2014. And 10 cities, all with large black populations, saw homicides up 33 percent on average.

“These aren’t flukes or blips, this is a real increase,” Rosenfeld said. “The only explanation that gets the timing right is a version of the Ferguson effect.”

Rosenfeld thus parts company with the liberal Brennan Center, whose analysts argued that the 2015 homicide increase in large cities was not a “national pandemic.” He parts company also with FiveThirtyEight analyst Carl Bialik, who dismissed a 16 percent homicide increase in 59 of the 60 largest cities in 2014 and 2015 as “a less dire picture than the one painted by reports in several large media outlets.”

But a 16 percent or 17 percent increase in homicides in major cities that

DeKALB – The DeKalb baseball team cruised behind the pitching of Eric Nelson in an 11-1, five-inning victory over Rockford Jefferson on Monday in the first round of the Class 4A Belvidere North Regional on Monday.

Nelson took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and allowed DeKalb (1217) to end the game in five innings by mercy rule against Jefferson (3-26).

Nelson carried a simple mindset before taking the mound against the Jayhawks.

“I was just trying to go in there and throw strikes,” Nelson said. “I knew I had to do my part to help us get the win.”

Nelson struck out the side in the first two innings and finished his five-inning outing with 10 strikeouts, allowing only two hits and one walk.

“You can tip your hat to Eric for his tremendous pitching effort,” DeKalb coach Justin Keck said. “That’s something he can build on and work forward by trying to keep the ball down and not making mistakes up in the strike zone.”

The Barbs produced plenty of pop at the plate to complement their starting pitcher, scoring 11 of the 12 batters that Mary Beth Nolan photos for Shaw Media reached base. Genoa-Kingston Sectional The sixth-seeded Spartans took advantage of some errant pitching by No. 8 Boylan Catholic and came away with a 10-0 victory in five innings in the first round of the Class 3A Sycamore Regional on a sunny afternoon at Sycamore High School.

“It was nice to see us hit the ball on the ground more today,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said. “You get people on base and good things happen. We always say put the pressure on the defense. You get a runner on third base, you’re putting the pressure

on the catcher every single pitch. Our kids know they have the green light, so it’s up to them if they want to go. It’s nice to see them not hesitate and just go for it.”

The Spartans (14-16) scored six times on pitches that ended up at the backstop and also drew seven walks on the day. Freshman right fielder Amanda Swedberg walked twice and scored two runs for the Spartans – one on a wild pitch and another on a passed ball.

“Be ready for anything that you think you can go on and just be aggressive at third base,” said Swedberg, who also had a single. “Once we get a run, we believe that we can get more.”

Sycamore advances to play No. 2-seeded Burlington Central at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a regional semifinal.

Against Boylan Catholic (8-18) on Monday, Sycamore senior first baseman Kayley Aase went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, and junior catcher Lexi Gordon was 1 for 2 with a double and two RBIs. Seven of the nine batters recorded a hit for the Spartans.

“We had some great, long at-bats,” Carpenter said. “Just extend the at-bat.

When you do that, you’re either going to get a better pitch to hit or you’re going to get a ball from the pitcher.”

Sycamore senior pitcher Izzy Odom got the win, pitching four scoreless innings with four strikeouts, and freshman Madison Parks struck out two in a perfect fifth inning to close it out.

Despite the lopsided final score, Odom had to escape a jam in the first two innings. The Titans got runners

on second and third with one out in the first inning but couldn’t score because of a strong defensive play by shortstop Nati Morey, who fielded a groundball and eventually tagged out the runner caught halfway between third base and home.

The Titans had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the second, but Odom kept them off the scoreboard.

The Sycamore offense responded after both innings, as well, scoring two in the bottom of the first and adding five in the second to give Odom a 7-0 lead.

“I think the biggest play was Nati Morey chasing down that girl at third,” Carpenter said. “When you get out of that and then put two runs on the board for your pitcher, I think that makes you feel a lot better on the mound.”

Now the Spartans take on the Rockets, who defeated the Spartans, 10-0, in the third game of the year in Burlington. Aase said the Spartans need to continue their hot hitting, and the Spartans have won five in a row, not allowing more than two runs in that stretch.

It was a good sign for us to show we could be patient at the plate and execute in the second, third, and fourth inning.

“The biggest thing I saw today that we haven’t seen the past few weeks is patience at the plate. When we saw a pitch we liked, we jumped on it and made solid contact.”

DeKalb moves on to play top-seeded Harlem on Wednesday afternoon, and Keck knows his team needs to turn the focus to the semifinals.

“We’re going to enjoy this one and we get to have another practice tomorrow,” Keck said. “We know we have bigger things ahead of us, but we’re going to enjoy it right now and move ahead.”

TORONTO – Kyle Lowry scored 35 points, including a driving layup in the final minute, and DeMar DeRozan had 32 as the Toronto Raptors evened the Eastern Conference finals by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers, 105-99, in Game 4 on Monday night.

DeMarre Carroll scored 11 points and Bismack Biyombo had 14 rebounds as Toronto improved to 8-2 at home this postseason.

Game 5 is Wednesday night in Cleve- Kyle Lowry land.

Cleveland lost consecutive playoff games to an Eastern Conference opponent for the first time since dropping the final three games of the conference semifinals to Boston in 2010.

LeBron James scored 29 points, and Kyrie Irving had 26 for the Cavaliers. Channing Frye scored nine of his 12 points in the fourth quarter.

The Raptors led by nine points to begin the fourth, but Frye made consecutive 3-pointers as Cleveland opened the final quarter with an 8-0

run, cutting it to 78-77. The Cavaliers made their first 11 shots of the fourth quarter. Frye’s errant 3-point attempt at 4:12 was their first miss.

A long 3 by Irving made it 101-99 with 2:00 left, but DeRozan answered with a driving bank shot at 1:33. Toronto got the ball back after Biyombo blocked J.R. Smith’s 3, and Biyombo kept the offensive possession alive by rebounding Lowry’s missed shot. After a timeout, Lowry let the shot clock wind down before driving for the decisive layup, making it 105-99 with 22 seconds to go.

Toronto jumped out to a 13-5 lead as Cleveland missed eight of its first 10 shots.

Lowry scored 15 points in the second, making three of Toronto’s four 3-pointers, as the Raptors opened a 57-41 halftime lead despite not shooting a single free throw in the first two quarters. It marked the first time a team led by 15 or more at halftime in a conference finals game without shooting a free throw since Game 2 of the 2001 East Finals between Milwaukee and Philadelphia.

Report: NFL sought to influence study on brain injuries WASHINGTON – NFL officials improperly sought to influence a government study on the link between football and brain disease, said a senior House Democrat in a report issued Monday.

New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone said the league tried to strong-arm the National Institutes of Health into taking the project away from a researcher who the NFL feared was biased.

The NFL had agreed to donate $30 million to the NIH to fund brain research but backed out after the institutes went ahead with a $16 million grant to prominent Boston University researcher Robert Stern. He’s a leading expert on the link between football and brain

diseases such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Taxpayers are instead bearing the cost.

The NFL denied Pallone’s findings.

“The NFL rejects the allegations,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement Monday. The league acknowledged it had raised concerns about the study and a potential conflict of interest involving Stern, but McCarthy said the NFL had communicated its concerns through appropriate channels. It noted that the league stands behind its $30 million promise and that the government ultimately made the decision on funding the study in question.

Kevin White had to hit several milestones in his rehab to get to the point of being 100 percent. Now he faces several more, such as his first padded practice in Bourbonnais and his first preseason game, building up to his NFL debut Sept. 11 in Houston.

On Tuesday, White will be on the field with the Bears taking another step when the team begins OTAs and phase three of the offseason training program.

Wednesday’s session Kevin White will be open to the media.

It was the end of OTAs last year when White suffered the stress fracture in his shin that eventually required surgery and kept him out for his entire rookie season. His return to the field is a focal point as these practices begin to see how the team manages him and how he performs.

The Bears’ brass has expressed sentiments of both confidence in what White can do on the field and a lack of concern of any adjustment to the game after missing a year. “… I can tell you about his character, and he’s everything that we expected,” offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said at the rookie minicamp.

“He’s a hard worker. His attitude is contagious because he is very positive; he doesn’t have bad days.”

Receivers coach Curtis Johnson compared White to two pretty darn good receivers he coached at the University of Miami – Andre Johnson and Reggie Wayne.

“He’s a very, very smart guy,” John-

son said of White. “He knows what he’s doing. I just can’t wait to see him. … I think he’s going to do magnificent.”

Here are three other story lines to watch during the Bears’ OTAs: Where the rookies fit in: It likely won’t be until Bourbonnais before any rookie consistently gets first-team reps, but we might get an idea of how close a rookie is to starting based on team drills in OTAs. Cody Whitehair figures to have the best chance if he can win the left guard job. Jonathan Bullard should have an opportunity to be a starter in the base defense. How high can Jordan Howard climb the running back depth chart? Can cornerback Deiondre’ Hall make his way into the top three corners? Does Deon Bush make it two years in a row the Bears start a rookie at safety?

The outside linebackers: We’ve got a few things to watch here, starting with top pick Leonard Floyd and how he acclimates to the NFL game in his first reps. Willie Young reportedly is talking contract extension, as he enters the final year of his deal. Lamarr Houston came on strong late last season and still is under contract through 2018. And the leader of the defense, Pernell McPhee, returns after arthroscopic knee surgery in the winter.

Receivers without Jeffery: Alshon Jeffery is not expected to report until the mandatory minicamp (a story line in itself), which means more reps for White and two receivers coming off injuries – Eddie Royal (knee) and Marquess Wilson (foot). This is a position that will feature lots of competition for roster spots, too, between Marc Mariani, Josh Bellamy, Deonte Thompson and seventh-rounder Daniel Braverman.

Hornish doesn’t regret

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Some drivers fear the end of their career. They hang on long past their prime, trying to find a ride, any ride, in every desperate attempt at another shot at a checkered flag.

Not Sam Hornish Jr. He’s a father of three, devoted to his young famIN THE ily, and should he never race PITS again, semi-reJenna tirement at Fryer 36 is just fine with him.

It’s easy to forget that Hornish was one of the greatest American open-wheel drivers of his generation after his failed move to NASCAR. There was a seven-year period where Hornish was a contender every week in IndyCar. He won three championships, the Indianapolis 500 and his 19 career victories rank 15th on the all-time list.

Those glory days are almost a decade removed, and Hornish is on the sideline during one of the biggest racing weekends of the year. He is not a participant in Sunday’s historic 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 and

working skills. Hornish is building a wagon that resembles a Volkswagen bus for his son, and a teardrop camper for the American Girl doll collection his two daughters share.

Hornish also has found himself in high demand as a substitute teacher at his children’s Charlotte-area school. This career change began during flu season when the private school asked for volunteers to sub for sick teachers. Hornish signed up and has found himself pretending to be a music teacher, a gym teacher, a computer lab leader, a two-day substitute for his daughters’ second-grade class and, in his roughest assignment, a pre-calculus teacher for high schoolers.

“Some of it is a little bit beyond my capability,” he said in an interview with The Associated Press. “My math skills are such that I just told them, AP file photo ‘I’m here to make sure you stay on Sam Hornish Jr. waits in the garage to task. Work on your problems, but I practice for the NASCAR Sprint Showdown can’t help you.’”

The trick is to keep the students on May 15, 2015, in Concord, N.C. quiet, which is far easier in the upper he won’t be in NASCAR’s Coca-Cola grades.

him, there was a brief period when he didn’t have steady NASCAR work that he considered a return. Then Dan Wheldon was killed in the 2011 season finale and Hornish knew he never would return.

“That just, to me, it’s part of my life, but it’s not all of my life,” said Hornish, who traveled to Alaska with his father in recent days for quality time. “There’s a lot more things for me to do outside of [racing].”

Hornish still watches races, still considers himself a fan. He’s played his 2006 Indy win for his kids on YouTube, and he might bring them to Sunday’s 100th running to give them their first experience with “The Greatest Spectacle In Racing.”

It’s a journey he made each year with his family, bonding time from his Ohio childhood that he treasures.

Don’t feel sorry for the way his career has wound down to a footnote in history.

Hornish is just fine with where he’s at right now.

“My mentality was never that I needed to do it so people knew who I was,” he said. “It made it easier for me to step away.”

“The higher up you get in school, they take less advantage of you,” he said.

“The younger kids try to get away with more.”

This is his life now, quiet and content away from the track. He still has “ambitions to race,” but his career outside of IndyCar never took off. He left IndyCar behind a year after finally winning the Indianapolis 500. He had an opportunity to move to NASCAR with Roger Penske, and with the Indy 500 goal no longer hanging over him, Hornish didn’t see why a switch wasn’t the best way to pursue a new set of goals.

It was a disaster from the beginning.

Hornish wasn’t ready for the Sprint Cup Series and he wasn’t at all competitive. By 2011, he was a part-time driver before Penske put together a deal for select Cup races in 2012. He moved down a level in 2013 to the Xfinity Series in a chance to run for the championship, but he finished second in the final standings.

Hornish got only nine starts the next year and spent 2015 languishing near the back of the pack for Richard Petty Motorsports. The team didn’t bring him

back this year, and Hornish’s NASCAR résumé reads zero wins in 167 Cup races and three victories in 110 Xfinity Series events.

He has no interest in simply turning laps.

“I don’t have to race,” he said. “How I clarify that is, I don’t want it so bad and I stay out there and it doesn’t matter where we are running. I’m to the point, if we’re going to go out there and run 25th, I’ll just stay home. I just feel like my kids are only going to be young once. I’ve done this long enough to know I was super-successful in open wheel and I believe that with the right people around me in stock cars, I can be successful.”

He often gets asked why he left IndyCar, and his answer is always the same.

He’d spent so much of his life focused on winning the Indy 500 that he had nothing left to do once he did it.

“I accomplished more than I ever dreamed of,” he said. “I miss certain aspects of open wheel, but I guarantee I wouldn’t still be racing there now. I might have retired much earlier. It was time to try something new.”

Hornish also gets asked whether he ever would consider going back. Although things about the series bothered

Still plenty of air in ‘Deflategate’ court case

NEW YORK – Tom Brady’s lawyers asked a federal appeals court for a new hearing before an expanded panel of judges, telling them Monday it is not just a silly dispute over underinflated footballs – it’s the basic right to a fair process that is shared by all union workers.

Setting the stage for the “Deflategate” scandal to stretch into its third season, and putting Brady’s four-game suspension back in the hands of the courts, the players’ union asked all 13 judges of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to hear the case that a three-judge panel decided in the league’s favor.

In the appeal filed Monday, Brady’s lawyers said commissioner Roger Goodell’s “biased, agenda-driven, and self-approving ‘appeal’ ruling must be vacated.”

ST. LOUIS – Joe Pavelski scored two goals, including the go-ahead score in the opening minute of the third period, and the San Jose Sharks beat the St. Louis Blues, 6-3, to take a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference final Monday night.

Grichuk’s homer in 9th lifts Cards over Cubs

The Associated Press ST. LOUIS – Randal Grichuk told reporters Monday afternoon his sore back was OK. A few hours later, Grichuk proved it with his first career walk-off home run.

Grichuk’s solo homer in the bottom of the ninth lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 win over the Cubs.

“I was trying to battle and get a pitch in the zone and put good wood on it and get on,” Grichuk said. “Luckily, I was able to get a homer.”

Matt Adams tied the score with a two-run homer in the seventh for St. Louis’ major league-leading ninth pinch-hit homer of the season. It also ended a streak of 13 innings of one-run pitching by Cubs starter John Lackey against his former team.

“This is a team that can do damage in a hurry,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “That’s something we haven’t had in the past as much, the ability for quite a few guys in that lineup that feel good about getting the ball over the fence and create instant offense.”

CHICAGO – Rajai Davis’ two-run homer in the fifth inning put Cleveland ahead to stay, Jose Ramirez hit his second long ball of the day and Juan Uribe also went deep to lead the Indians to a 5-1 victory over the White Sox and a doubleheader split Monday night.

Davis’ shot to left field off Erik Johnson (0-2) on a 3-0 fastball snapped a 1-all tie. That was enough offense for Cody Anderson (1-3), who struck out a career-best nine in seven innings as the Indians snapped a three-game skid.

In the opener, Brett Lawrie broke a fifth-inning tie with a three-run homer, Todd Frazier hit his 14th of the season and the Sox held on for a 7-6 victory.

Ramirez homered on the last pitch he saw in the opener and the first of the second game for Cleveland, which finished the day with six homers.

The second game featured two pitchers called up from Triple-A to make the start, and Johnson tired. He allowed five runs and six hits in 62/3 innings.

Frazier doubled and scored on Melky Cabrera’s single in the third for the Sox, but Anderson was dominant from there, retiring the final 13 batters he faced.

In the first game, Austin Jackson had three hits and two RBIs, Mat Latos (6-1) allowed three runs in six innings and David Robertson pitched a hitless ninth for his 12th save.

Marlon Byrd’s two-run homer in the fifth off Latos tied it at 3 a half-inning before Lawrie sent Mike Clevinger’s fastball into the left-field seats.

“I saw a bunch of pitches, sliders and curveballs, and it allowed me at 3-2 to get a fastball and I didn’t miss it,” Lawrie said.

Lawrie also singled and walked three times. Frazier’s solo shot in the first was his second in two days and gave him the AL lead.

Clevinger (0-1) gave up seven hits over five innings in his second big league start.

Few surgery options for emphysema Dear Dr. K: My mother has severe emphysema. Medication and oxygen therapy aren’t helping much anymore. Are there any good surgical options?

Dear Reader: Emphysema is a long-term lung problem that makes it harder and harder to breathe as the disease progresses.

It often is grouped together with chronic bronchitis under the label of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Emphysema destroys the walls between tiny air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. When this happens, the lungs cannot absorb oxygen and expel carbon dioxide normally. So they deliver less oxygen to the bloodstream.

(I’ve put an illustration on my website, www.askdoctork.com.) The lung tissue also loses its resilience, which makes it harder to expel air as forcefully. This leaves air trapped in the air sacs.

All of these changes result in shortness of breath. As the disease worsens, a person with emphysema may have trouble catching his or her breath even while sitting or lying down.

Medications that help open the airways are the cornerstone of treatment. Many people eventually also need supplemental oxygen therapy.

Surgery is an option only for people with severe emphysema who have trouble breathing despite medical treatment and pulmonary rehabilitation. (Pulmonary rehab is therapy that combines exercise breathing retraining, patient education and psychological support.)

The most common surgery is lung volume reduction surgery, in which a surgeon removes damaged areas of the lung. The idea is to create space in which healthier lung tissue can expand and contract more easily. It also enables the diaphragm to return to a more normal position, so it can work more effectively to get air in

A newer, less invasive procedure called bronchoscopic lung volume reduction surgery sometimes can be done instead. It involves putting one-way valves into the airways leading to the diseased parts of the lung. The valves let air out but not in. This collapses the diseased parts of the lung.

This procedure does not involve cutting open the chest, as traditional surgery does, but the result is similar: The space taken by an ineffective part of the lung is freed up.

In another procedure, bullectomy, the surgeon removes large, abnormal air pockets in the lungs. This procedure is done infrequently.

The final option is lung transplantation. It is a last resort for people whose lungs are failing because there is just not enough healthy lung left from the ravages of emphysema. This physically demanding procedure is usually done only on younger people, who are more likely to withstand the risks.

In other words, the few treatments available for end-stage emphysema are pretty drastic and only partly effective. But at least there is something to offer your mother that may have some benefit.

The vast majority of cases of emphysema are caused by smoking tobacco. That means there’s a way to never have to face those drastic choices: Quit, before it’s too late.

co-worker has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. She’s not sure how long she may have. She is relatively young, so it’s tragic.

We have excellent insurance from work, national health care and disability insurance.

Another co-worker sent out an email with a link to a crowdfunding site as well as an invitation to a party selling products. The proceeds will be donated to fulfilling a “cancer bucket list,” which includes pampering, trips and other luxuries. I sympathize with anyone having a terminal illness, but why does that mean I have to give money? Do they have a right to be pampered on other people’s dime?

This kind of fundraising, without real financial need, seems to happen often: Co-workers who have had accidents, fires, unexpected or stressful incidents all have office collections set up, even when they are fully insured and the damage is covered by their policies. A friend (or Human Resources) contacts everyone who has had even a passing interaction with the individual and solicits donations. I am happy to write letters and notes to people I know are having a hard time. I visit with closer friends and may bring a meal or flowers to their home. But people I’ve spent only a few hours with asking for money for luxuries seems nervy to me. Am I a tightwad, or is a financial donation necessary to express condolences?
