Health officials: Person with the measles visited several DeKalb locations

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – State health officials have released more details about potential measles exposure, including the places in DeKalb the infected person visited.

A family member of a Northern Illinois University student who graduated during the 1:30 p.m. ceremony May 14 at the NIU Convocation Center was diagnosed with measles.

“This individual visited several locations in northern Illinois, including hotels and a college graduation,” Illinois Department of Public Health Director Nirav D. Shah said in a statement. “Measles is highly contagious, and a person with no immunity can become infected simply by being in the same room with someone who has the disease. To eliminate the potential spread of the disease, we are working with the Chicago, DeKalb and Evanston health departments to notify anyone known to have had potential contact with this person about their possible exposure.”

Potential exposures in Illinois may have occurred to: • Guests and staff at the Holmes Student Center Guest Room Hotel from May 13 to 15 on the NIU Campus, 340 Carroll Ave., DeKalb.

• Attendees of the NIU College of Business reception at 10 a.m. May 13 at the Barsema Hall Atrium, and the graduation ceremony at 1:30 p.m. at the NIU Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb.

• Customers and employees from 11:30 p.m. May 13 to 2 a.m. May 14 at Wal-Mart, 2300 Sycamore Road, DeKalb.

• Customers and employees from noon to 3 p.m. May 14 at Panda Express, 1015 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb.

• Guests and employees May 15 to 16 at the Chicago Essex Inn, 800 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.

A person who was potentially exposed

and is experiencing a fever of 101 degrees or higher, a cough, runny nose and red eyes, with or without a rash, should call their health care provider to arrange for care.

Health officials said these people should not go directly to a doctor’s office or the emergency room without first calling ahead to avoid infecting others around them.

The highly contagious respiratory disease is transmitted by contact with an infected person through coughing or sneezing and can remain in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Health Department.

Infected people are contagious from four days before their rash starts through four days after.

While people who are fully vaccinated (two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine) are at low risk of becoming infected, those who have not been vaccinated could become ill. Two doses of the vaccine are 97 percent effective at preventing a measles infection and are required for all Illinois school children.

“This case in Illinois is a reminder of the importance of immunizations,” Shah said in a statement. “While Illinois did have a cluster of measles cases last year, we typically only see a handful of cases each year.

However, measles is much more common in other countries and is only a plane ride away. It’s important that anyone who can be vaccinated get vaccinated. It will help protect you as well as others who can’t be vaccinated, like infants younger than a year old.”

In July 2015, the Washington State Department of Health confirmed a measles-related death. The last reported measles infection that resulted in death in the U.S. was in 2003.

Hinckley-Big Rock students look to continue success after high school

rgillespie@shawmedia.com HINCKLEY – With its 48 graduates, the Hinckley-Big Rock High School Class of 2016 is small in number but big on achievement and potential, school leaders said Sunday.

Family and friends piled into the school’s gymnasium to cheer on the students as they officially completed high school, walking across the makeshift stage to pick up their diplomas and turning their tassels.

“The sky’s the limit for this group.

They are incredibly talented,” Principal Jay Brickman said. “They are very typical in their unity ... but there are so many strong individuals in this class.”

Rebecca Baker is an example of the go-getters Brickman said make up this year’s graduating class. She finished high school Sunday and in two weeks will graduate cosmetology school.

Baker attended high school during the day and studied to be a beautician at night. She said she plans to enroll in

Waubonsee Community College in the fall to major in business, as she looks forward to someday opening her own salon.

“I am so super proud of her,” said Andrea Baker, her mother. “Her last two years of high school have been an example of someone who is very diligent in their goals and knowing what they want. ... I can’t wait to see where

this is going to take her in life.”

Zachary McNanna is looking ahead to Cornell College, where he will continue to run track as he pursues a biology degree. He’s the last of his mom and dad’s two sons to finish high school.

“I’m looking forward to having my freedom,” said McNanna, who will be three hours west of home when he goes off to college.

Hinckley-Big Rock School District 429 Superintendent Travis McGuire spoke during the ceremony and told all of the graduates to continue on their paths of outstanding achievement.

“Continue to be,” McGuire said. “Be the inspiration. Be the change. Be the ones that really are focused on not just the success, but the work that goes into that.”

Kishwaukee College celebrates Class of 2016

Deborah Neff decided to attend Kish after graduating from DeKalb High School in 2013.

Neff, who graduated with an associate degree in science, said she got a great experience, and the professors also helped her figure out her career path.

Neff plans to go to Northern Illinois University in the fall to study finance.

“I realized I was good in my businesses classes,” she said. “Coming here helped me figure out what I want to do, and now I’m one step closer to my bachelor’s degree.”

LOCAL BRIEFS Cortland man killed while working for Kane County DOT

DeKALB – A Cortland man who worked for the Kane County Department of Transportation was killed Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while he was on the job filling potholes.

Steven Chidester, 43, was part of a two-man crew working on a stretch of Harter Road in Blackberry Township around 10:40 a.m. when the driver of a 1999 Ford F250 failed to slow down and hit Chidester from behind, according to information provided by the Kane

County Sheriff’s Office.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The driver of the F250 was identified as Christopher Flamand, 27, of Kaneville. He and the other KCDOT worker were treated at the scene by Sugar Grove paramedics for minor injuries, the sheriff’s office reported.

Kane County sheriffs responded to the call for the traffic crash. They were assisted by Sugar Grove fire and police departments and the Kane County Office of Emergency Management. The Kane County Accident Reconstruction

Team also was called to the scene.

At press time, no charges had been filed in the incident. Kane County officials said the investigation is ongoing.

DeKALB – The police chief is expected to unveil his long-term crime-fighting plan to the mayor and aldermen today at the DeKalb City Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

The committee also has on its agenda to hear about the city’s crime-free housing program and its 2015 work.

The Committee of the Whole meets at 5 p.m., an hour ahead of the regular City Council meeting.

That meeting includes the swearing-in of police officers recently promoted to sergeant and a mayoral appointment to the Environmental Commission.

Mayor John Rey also is scheduled to make an appointment to the DeKalb Fire and Police Commission.

Aldermen are expected to take more action on amending liquor laws, this time considering changes to the application and renewal of liquor licenses.

SOMONAUK – Jacob Kenyon had a lot to celebrate this weekend. Not only did the team he is captain for, the Somonauk High School boys varsity baseball team, win regionals, but Kenyon also graduated Somonauk High School as the Class of 2016’s valedictorian.

Kenyon was one of the 64 students who graduated Sunday from the school. He was the class valedictorian with a 4.20 GPA, and Liridona Ashiku was the class salutatorian with a 4.16 GPA. “It’s a great feeling to be graduating today,” Kenyon said. “Somonauk was a great place to grow up, and Somonauk High School is a great place to be. I’m going to miss all my friends and teachers, but they have made me ready for the next step, whatever happens in the future.”

In the fall, Kenyon will attend the University of Iowa to study business.

Kenyon’s mom, Fran Kenyon, is the high school’s athletic coordinator.

“I’ve seen all of these kids grow up, whether they were my son’s

friends or I coached them in soccer or soccer camps,” Fran Kenyon said.

“They’ve done great things, and I know they’ll do even greater things going forward.”

During her welcoming speech, Ashiku compared Somonauk High School to the theme song from “Cheers,” because both places are “where everybody knows your name.”

“We all grew up together, from kindergarten to high school, and we all know each other’s names,” Ashiku said. “Growing up together made a big difference in our lives. We’re more like a family than a class. …

Graduating today still doesn’t feel real. It’s a shock to realize that we’re not coming back in the fall.”

After graduation, Ashiku will attend the University of Illinois at Chicago to study mechanical engineering.

For Somonauk District 432 Superintendent Jay Streicher, the graduation of the Class of 2016 is especially memorable.

“This year’s graduation is special, at least personally to me, because I was there the day they started kindergarten,” Streicher said. “I was

there when they walked into school 13 years ago, and now I’m here on the day when they walk out as graduates. … The students are going near and far after graduation. They’re going to local community colleges and trade schools, and to colleges and universities in-state, and as far away as Iowa and New York.”

Class officer and graduate Ashli Lumsden said that what sets apart the graduating class from others is that they achieved success by

working together. After graduation, Lumsden plans on attending Illinois State University to become a special education teacher.

“Our class is a mix, but everyone is successful, in either sports, academics or extracurriculars,” Lumsden said. “We’ve spent so many years together. I want to thank them.

I also want to say thank you to my family and my teachers. You’ve made me the woman I am today and shaped me into the teacher I want to be.”

Strawn grumbled, while waiting to ambush unsuspecting runners in a swine barn, her face wounds remaining intact. “The novelty runs are always fun and exciting, and the fact that it’s in my hometown – I usually have to travel so far out of my way to do these, so this is perfect.”

About 50 runners had one thing on their brains during a 5K Saturday in Sandwich: Don’t let them get devoured by zombies.

The Sandwich Park District resumed its annual Radioactive Zombie Run after it was discontinued last year by a Colorado-based company because of low turnouts in 2013 and 2014, program coordinator Candace Kissel said.

Participants in the 5K ran through obstacle courses on the Sandwich fairgrounds and avoided not-so-slow and not-so-pleasant zombies who attempted to snatch flags from runners’ belts.

“It’s for the non-marathon runners,” Kissel said. “It’s for the people who need the motivation to get it done.”

The goal of the event, other than promoting fitness in a fun way, is to establish an annual fundraiser for Sandwich kids to attend summer camp, Kissel said. The park district barely broke even this year, but Kissel said she plans for the 5K to pick up steam among the community in the future.

“Hopefully, it will grow into something that can really sustain a sum-

Budget impasse erodes interest in some colleges

CHAMPAIGN – High school seniors’ unease over the lack of state funding for Illinois universities is contributing to a drop in applications at a number of campuses, and the problem appears to primarily affect schools facing some of the toughest financial struggles.

A review of admissions data by The Associated Press found that applications for the 2016-2017 fall semester are down for at least four of the state’s 12 public university campuses – all of them smaller schools that don’t have as much money coming in from sources such as research grants and tuition and have smaller endowments .

At least three schools have seen an increase in applicants this year, including the University of Illinois’ flagship campus. Others did not provide complete numbers or declined to discuss their situations.

Some schools in neighboring states, meanwhile, say more Illinois students are applying.

Belleville resident Bryce Evans considered Eastern Illinois University, among other schools, but the Althoff Catholic High School senior is instead opting for Butler University, a private school in Indianapolis. He said one factor was the uncertainty over education

Illinois prisons chief to lead mental health overhaul

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ top corrections official said an overhaul has begun of prison mental health programs after a settlement in a class-action lawsuit.

Illinois Department of Corrections Director John Baldwin told The (Bloomington) Pantagraph he wants the state to be a national model. Baldwin said Gov. Bruce Rauner is committed to making funding available.

The agreement in a 2007 class-action lawsuit calls for new treatment units at the Logan, Pontiac and Dixon prisons as well as in Joliet. The cost has been estimated at $90 million, including staffing. U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm approved the settlement earlier this month.

Audit: Lottery broke law to get around budget impasse

BELLEVILLE – The state’s auditor general said the Illinois Lottery violated state finance law by prepaying $20 million to ensure it could participate in future multi-state lottery games even without a state budget.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that the lottery made two $10 million payments on June 30, 2015, when it was clear lawmakers had failed to agree on a state budget that should have begun the next day.

The Lottery Department disputes the findings and denies any laws were broken.

According to the audit, lottery officials made the early payments because they worried the looming budget stalemate would prevent participation in the Multi-

Grandmother, uncle held in 7-year-old’s shooting death

QUINCY – The grandmother and uncle of a 7-year-old girl who died after a shooting in southwestern Illinois are in custody in connection with the incident.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reported authorities on Friday arrested 49-year-old Julie Roberts for obstruction of justice.

They arrested 32-year-old Daniel Roberts that day for endangering the life of child, possession of a weapon by a felon and obstruction of justice.

It was not immediately clear if either has an attorney. Their names were listed Sunday on the Adams County Jail inmate list.

Adams County Coroner James Keller said 7-year-old Melina Torres of Quincy died at a hospital as a result of a gunshot wound.

Naperville highway chief suing trustees over budget

NAPERVILLE – The Naperville Township highway commissioner is suing the township board to stop it from stripping $540,000 from his budget.

Stan Wojtasiak contends the board’s decision to slash his funding was an illegal act of retaliation for his rejection of an agreement under which the city of Naperville would have taken over maintenance of some township roadway.

Wojtasiak disputed the amount of money the city claimed would have been saved under the agreement.

The commissioner said he’ll be forced to lay off several employees if the budget cut takes effect. The suit filed in DuPage County Circuit Court names Naperville Township Supervisor Rachel Ossyra and two trustees as defendants.

Obama looks to strengthen Asian economic, security ties

The Associated Press HANOI, Vietnam – President Barack Obama’s mission in Vietnam and Japan is to build stronger economic and security ties with Asian-Pacific allies anxious about the rise of an increasingly muscular China.

That forward-looking message will be delivered even as he confronts the legacies of two wars long past – Vietnam and World War II – that still are fraught with emotion.

Obama’s first stop on his weeklong Asia trip was Vietnam, where he is the third sitting president to visit since the end of the war.

Four decades after the fall of Saigon, and two decades after President Bill Clinton restored relations with the nation, Obama is eager to upgrade relations with an emerging power whose rapidly expanding middle class beckons as a promising market for U.S. goods and an offset to China’s growing strength in the region.

Obama arrived in Hanoi late Sunday. During his three-day stay in Vietnam, he’ll make the case for stronger commercial and security ties, including approval of the 12-nation trans-Pacific trade agreement that is stalled in Congress and facing strong opposition from the 2016 presidential candidates.

Vietnam also is hoping that Obama will use the visit to erase an irksome vestige of the war by lifting the U.S. partial embargo on selling arms to the country. The idea is under consideration, but concern about Vietnam’s human rights record could weigh against it.

In Japan, Obama will attend a summit of the

Group of Seven industrialized nations, where the uncertain global economy will be a top concern of the G-7 leaders.

They’ll also grapple with a full array of world challenges, including the fight against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, the refugee crisis in Europe and Russian aggression. Also on the agenda will be Beijing’s assertive claims in the South China Sea that are causing tensions with other countries in the region.

While the summit isn’t expected to produce any breakthroughs, it gives leaders a rare opportunity to talk through the intractable difficulties they confront.

“Remember that leaders are lonely people,” said Michael Green, senior vice president for Asia at the private Center for Strategic and International Studies. “These people don’t have much time to sit down with their peers to talk about common challenges.”

For all of that, the culminating moment of Obama’s trip will be a solemn visit to Hiroshima, where the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb that killed 140,000 people, ushering in the nuclear age seven decades ago. Another bomb killed 70,000 in Nagasaki three days later.

It will be a moment to reflect on the devastating costs of war and to try to give new impetus to the call for a nuclear-free world that Obama issued seven years ago in his first year as president.

Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said the Vietnam and Japan visits both reflect Obama’s world view “that we can move beyond difficult and complicated histories” to find areas of common interest.

‘Bathroom laws’ cause problems The movement to ban students from using restrooms that conform to their gender identity is a solution in search of a problem.

There is no evidence, no data that these young people present a threat to their fellow students or anyone else.

However, it’s a solution that can cause lots of problems and a great deal of pain.

Transgender people are much more likely to be victims of sexual violence. Forcing them to use restrooms set aside for them or for those of the gender with which they don’t identify is akin to placing a target on their backs.

Henry Brousseau hated using the unisex bathroom in his public high school in Louisville before it adopted a policy allowing students to use the restroom of their gender identity. Born a girl, he had identified as a male for three years when he spoke to a Kentucky Senate panel last year.

“I was outing myself every time I had to go in there,” he said.

Using that unisex bathroom put him in the crosshairs of potential harassers, marking him as something other than the “normal kid” he wanted to be.

Henry’s concerns are at the heart of the U.S. Justice Department’s battle with North Carolina over HB2, the law just passed in a special session to overrule a fairness ordinance in Charlotte and compel public schools to make students use the bathrooms of the gender identity assigned to them at birth.

The Justice Department sued North Carolina, saying HB2 violates civil rights. Friday, Justice joined the Department of Education in a joint letter to schools saying they must assure all students, including transgender students, “can attend school in an environment free from discrimination based on sex.” Implicit is that schools that violate this principle risk losing federal funding.

This is not a departure from previous federal guidance, nor is it new to many schools. Atherton High in Louisville, where Henry attended, adopted a policy in 2014 allowing students to use the bathroom of their gender identity. Atherton Principal Thomas Aberli told the Louisville Courier-Journal Friday that the new policy had been a “non-issue.” “Students feel safe and that we value the diversity in our school and see it as a strength rather than divisive.”

Aberli acknowledged that changing mindsets about gender identity can be difficult, but “as leaders we must do our research” to understand the issue and the impact of discrimination on students.

Not feeling accepted takes a tremendous toll. Transgender kids attempt and commit suicide at a greater rate than their peers, and they miss school more often.

If it weren’t so serious, these bathroom bills would be ridiculous.

Politicians whine that a bullying federal government is trying to force its values on states – while state legislatures try to force their values on their own cities.

And, of course, these laws are unenforceable. Would a bathroom monitor stand outside every door, demanding a valid copy of a birth certificate or inspect genitalia before kids can enter? Or should students use their cellphones to spy on their peers inside stalls?

But neither human dignity nor common sense is enough to stop those who want to raise money or bolster political careers by demonizing transgender students who just want to be themselves.

His response? He has accused Democrats of “rigging the system” against him and implicitly threatened to withhold his support from Clinton if he doesn’t win. He has made noises about a contested convention and suggested that he doesn’t care whether his tactics aid the presumptive GOP nominee, Donald Trump.

In so doing, he simply makes the case for Clinton, who clearly is better suited, not only by experience but also by temperament, for a demanding job where you don’t always get your way.

She has been just where Sanders is now – remember 2008? She didn’t threaten to turn the nominating convention upside down or insist that she’d been cheated.

Clinton ran an energetic contest against a young senator named Barack Obama – a contest that was sometimes rancorous and racially tinged. There were suggestions of a breach that would

never be repaired, of a rivalry that was all-consuming, of a Democratic Party that would be riven for decades to come.

But Clinton never suggested to her supporters that they stage a revolt.

And after she lost, she and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, campaigned tirelessly for Obama. She later became his loyal and dedicated secretary of state.

(Obama, for his part, exhibited the equanimity for which he has become well known throughout the testy 2008 primary season. Although he started far behind Clinton in support from superdelegates, he persuaded many of them to change their allegiance to him without resorting to hints of blackmail. Can you imagine, by the way, what would have happened had the supporters of a black candidate thrown chairs and issued death threats?)

Sanders’ tactics, by contrast, are not only shortsighted and immature, but they also are dangerous, fueling the cynicism and suspicion that are eating away at the civic fabric. He is leading his voters to believe that he is being cheated out of the nomination, but that is simply not true.

The party rules that hand over outsized power to unelected superdelegates,

most of whom are Clinton supporters, are not democratic (small “d”), but those rules have been in place for decades.

Sanders never complained about them before.

Of course, Sanders hasn’t been a Democrat before, either. He has spent most of his career as an independent, a self-described socialist. While he usually votes with Democrats in the U.S. Senate, he often has snubbed them publicly, suggesting his colleagues were too wedded to a corrupt system. That is not the sort of history likely to persuade those same colleagues – many of whom are superdelegates – to support him for the nomination.

Sanders should reconsider his strategy. He could stay in the race until June (as Clinton did in 2008) and still gracefully concede and back her candidacy. He would return to the Senate in a position of power and prestige.

But if he continues his current course, his legacy might be to elect Trump as president. Is that terrifying prospect what Sanders wants?

Argument for drone blowback in Pakistan is a myth

The Washington Post Since 2001, the U.S. has used armed drones (or unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs) against Islamist militants in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Yemen and Pakistan. Obama administration officials and other proponents believe drones work because they deny terrorists sanctuaries and degrade their ability to plan attacks.

However, human rights organizations and even some former U.S. military commanders argue that drone strikes inadvertently increase terrorism by exerting a “blowback” effect. Their logic is simple. Drone strikes kill more innocent civilians than terrorists, which radicalizes affected populations and motivates them to join terrorist groups to retaliate against the U.S. Prominent American counterinsurgency expert David Kilcullen and co-author Andrew Exum wrote “every one of these dead noncombatants represents an alienated family, a new desire for revenge, and more recruits for a militant movement that has grown exponentially even as drone

strikes have increased.”

The perfect case for testing the blowback effect is Pakistan, where, since 2004, the CIA has launched an estimated 423 strikes, constituting 75 percent of the agency’s drone strikes worldwide. While the drone campaign in Pakistan began under the Bush administration, President Barack Obama sharply escalated it with 128 strikes in 2010 alone.

Since 2012, when Obama signaled a shift in counterterrorism away from targeted killings, the drone war has been winding down with sporadic strikes. Secretly endorsed by Pakistani authorities, these strikes were carried out in the country’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) bordering Afghanistan, where al-Qaida and Taliban militants found a safe haven after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

Opinion polls, such as those carried out by the Pew Research Center since at least 2009, indicate widespread Pakistani anger at drone strikes. Pew’s latest 2014 survey showed that 67 percent of respondents opposed drone attacks because they kill “too many innocent people.”

However, Pew data on drones is deeply misleading as the organization draws its samples mostly from urban areas not directly impacted by drone strikes because the Pakistan military and/or militants limit or deny access to the conflict zone.

Nonetheless, in a 2011 survey conducted by a local NGO in FATA, 63 percent of the respondents thought drone strikes “are never justified.”

But when the results are disaggregated, support for drone strikes is the highest in North Waziristan, the FATA district where the CIA has carried out most of its lethal drone operations, compared to the other six.

To assess local perceptions of drone strikes, I conducted 147 semi-structured interviews with adult (age 18 or older) residents of North Waziristan in the summer and winter of 2015. While the sample is not statistically representative of the entire population, it constitutes the largest set of in-depth interviews with people from the district, including maliks (tribal elders), reporters, lawyers, businessmen, rights activists, teachers, university students and last but not least, heads and members of the local chapters of

seven political parties.

The data contradict the presumed local radicalization effects of drones.

In fact, 79 percent of the respondents endorsed drones. In sharp contrast to claims about the significant civilian death toll from drone strikes, 64 percent, including several living in villages close to strike locations, believed that drone strikes accurately targeted militants.

While many interviewees did specifically point to pre-2012 “signature strikes,” which targeted groups of men based on behavior patterns rather than individual identity, as the cause of occasionally high fatalities, 56 percent believed drones seldom killed non-militants. And as the Crisis Group and Georgetown’s Christine Fair have noted, most locals prefer drones to the Pakistan military’s ground and aerial offensives that cause more extensive damage to civilian life and property.

Bernie Sanders is facing a critical test of his leadership, and so far he’s failing. When some of his supporters threw chairs at a mid-May convention of the Nevada State Democratic Party and threatened the life of Roberta Lange, the state party chairwoman, Sanders’ response was to paint the Democratic establishment – the leaders of the party with which he has had a marriage of convenience for decades – as corrupt.

He sounded more petulant than apologetic, more angry at his Democratic rival than alarmed at the actions of his supporters. That’s troubling.

There is an axiom, frequently quoted to younger folk who are facing difficulty, that says you are more accurately judged by your response to adversity than your response to advantage.

There’s much truth in that – and Sanders, who is no longer young, should know it.

He is losing. He has run a lively, imaginative and uplifting campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination and has attracted millions of supporters.

He has influenced Hillary Clinton, the likely nominee, pushing her to the left on some critical issues, including trade.

But, as often is the case in life, that hasn’t been enough. It’s nearly impossi-

At the next STEM Café, “RoboRevolution: The Future of Sentient Machines at Home and in the Workplace,” two Northern Illinois University thinkers will explore the many ways cutting-edge robotics and artificial intelligence are changing our lives.

“Many of the changes enabled by robots will be unquestionably good,” Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Ji-Chul Ryu said in a news release. He will discuss his research on robots that

help special needs children and disabled adults.

“But other developments are more complicated, and those complications are only going to increase.”

These more complicated developments include technological advances that allow robots to take over human jobs. Ryu and his co-presenter, Stephen Haliczer, will discuss the past, present and future effects of this workforce displacement on worldwide political and social stability. Haliczer is the Special Assistant to NIU’s Vice President for Information Technology Innovation (and an emeritus NIU Professor of History).

But the answers are not all bleak. Ryu and Haliczer will describe many ways in which humans and robots are working together now – and can work

together even better in the future, especially as robots become increasingly “sentient,” or capable of thought.

Ensuring harmonious human-robot coexistence will take work. Ryu and Haliczer will discuss government and private sector efforts to regulate the development of intelligent machines and ensure they don’t escape human control.

This event is one of the STEM Outreach Office’s monthly STEM Cafés, all of which are free and open to the public.

DeKalb’s Long captures state championship in the 300 hurdles

STATE CHAMPION DeKalb’s Savannah Long competes in the Class 3A 300-meter hurdles finals Saturday at the IHSA Track and Field State Finals at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Field in Charleston.

CHARLESTON – A year ago, DeKalb hurdler Savannah Long was amazed that she finished in sixth place at state in the 300-meter hurdles.

On Saturday, she became a state champion.

Long capped her prep career by narrowly winning the Class 3A state championship in the 300 hurdles on a sunny afternoon at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Field.

“I remember a year ago, sixth place was amazing for me,” Long said. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe I got sixth place.’ Now I’m in first. It feels awesome.”

Long came from behind to win with a time of 43.34 seconds – just ahead of Lincoln Way East’s Alexis Pierre-Antonie (43.41) and Alton senior LaJarvia Brown (43.47).

“It came down to who wanted it more, and I wanted it more,” a smiling Long said after the race.

She became the third DeKalb track and field athlete to win a state championship in school history, and she also placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles.

At the 2015 state meet, her sixthplace time was 44.39.

It was a photo finish Saturday, with Long closing on the home stretch – leaving the stadium PA announcer unable to tell who had won.

“I was recording the whole race and Savannah got to the last 30-40 meters, I saw in her face that she wasn’t going to lose that race,” DeKalb’s first-year coach Tywon Green said.

“She wanted it and she always wanted it. When it got to the finish, I was like, ‘Did she win?’ I almost dropped my iPad.” Long said it wasn’t a perfect race for her, either. She noted she stuttered on the curve, something she said could add a full second to her time. Regardless of the hiccup, the strong finish helped her achieve her season-long goal of winning the state championship.

“There’s always that fear in a race, but that’s when you have to tell yourself that you will do it,” she said.

1,600-relay win helps Knights share team title

jseverson@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Coming into the final race of the day, the Kaneland girls 1,600-meter relay team needed to win in order to catch defending Class 2A state champion Cahokia.

After the team of junior Nicole Sreenan, seniors Carly Bartholomew and Allie Heinzer and sophomore Jamie Martens cruised to a first-place finish, it helped the Knights to become the co-state champions with the Comanches on a sunny Saturday at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Field in Charleston.

“It’s a dream come true for my senior year, I couldn’t ask for anything more for my teammates,” said Heinzer, who also took fourth in the 200 dash.

It’s the best finish for the Knights since they won back-to-back Class A championships in 1987 and ’88.

While the relay team needed all 10 points to earn a tie with Cahokia, Kaneland relays coach Keith Snyder said he kept the team blissfully ignorant on the matter.

“I don’t think they knew. We weren’t going to tell them,” Snyder said. “When they ran together this year, there wasn’t many teams in Illinois that could beat them.”

The 1,600 team led almost the entire race – helped by a strong push by Heinzer in the third leg – and Martens maintained the advantage to beat Springfield Southwest for the title.

It was another strong day for the relay teams for the Knights, who finished with 53 points. All four relays finished in the top five: the 1,600 (first), 400 (second), 800 (fourth) and the 3,200 (fifth).

“To have four relays place that high, it shows how strong of a team we have,” Snyder said. “We got contributions from everywhere.”

The 400 relay team of sophomore Shanya Hurston, Heinzer, Sreenan and junior Carly Elliott, which came into the finals with the top prelim

time, finished with a time of 48.30 seconds.

“Honestly, I was a nervous wreck – I was,” Elliott said about running in the final. “But once the gun goes off, you just have to clear your mind and run your race and do your thing.”

Springfield Southeast ended up taking first with a time of 48.15. Sreenan said being the state runner-up is a good step for the team, which will bring back three of the four legs in the relay.

“I think it’s good encouragement for next year,” she said. “We’re second, which is awesome, but that

leaves room for improvement. I think that’s what that means. Allie won’t be here, but we can still hold on to the legacy that we made this year.”

The fourth-place 800 relay team of Heinzer, Bartholomew, Martens and Elliott finished in 1:43.42 and the 3,200 relay of junior Sarah Daley, seniors Noelle Espino and Brianna Bower and junior Becca Richtman crossed in 9:46.

The Knights had multiple little moments throughout the day that helped add up to their point total, also. Junior Lexie Guerra was eighth in the pole vault, which netted them two valuable points and in the 400 dash, Sreenan had a strong finish that helped propel her to second place.

“I think that’s my strong point in the 400 is to be able to push harder at the end – that’s what I’ve really had going for me in the end,” said Sreenan, who was also second in the 100.

Kaneland narrowly missed getting a trophy last season, finishing fifth and was one point behind a two-way tie for third. According to Knights coach Doug Ecker, who was an assistant on those 1987 and ’88 teams, the moments like Sreenan’s late surge and Guerra placing eighth in the pole vault are what helped put them over the top Saturday.

“When you’re down here, that’s what it is when you have the best relays and best individuals – the difference between first and fifth can be one little thing,” he said. “That’s why you never know how many points you’re going to score, or what you’re going to place. I thought we might have a chance to get a trophy.”

DeKalb’s Cory Mata, Sycamore’s Alyssa Feuerbach and Genoa-Kingston’s Carly Fischer all ended their prep careers by making the podium, while Hinckley-Big Rock runner Audrey Harrod had a pair of runner-up finishes at the girls track and field state meet at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Field in Charleston.

“I cried to my coach after they announced (my distance) – more tears,” said Mata, who was seventh in Class 3A with a distance of 128 feet, 1 inch, and also admitted to tearing up when she won the Class 3A Huntley Sectional meet earlier this month. “(DeKalb coach Tywon Green) said I’m the most emotional athlete he’s ever met.

I’m emotional. I’m going to be on the podium. Are you kidding? How great is that?”

For Feuerbach, the goal was to final break the 120-foot mark that she’s chased her entire career with the Spartans. Coming into the day with a season-high of 119-8 and a career-high of 119-9, she fired a 122-2 on her first throw.

“After (the judge) said, ‘One tw–” I was like, ‘Yes! I got it!’ Then I just got emotional because it’s the end of senior year and graduation is next weekend and it’s the last of the last,” said Feuerbach, who ended up placing eighth to make it to the podium, which holds the top nine finishers.

“I’m just so thankful I was able to peak the last meet of the year. Those were happy tears – definitely happy tears.”

Fischer came into the finals with the second-best mark in the preliminary round and held onto the position with a throw of 133-11, finishing runner-up behind Dixon’s Tayla Schwarz, who broke the Class 2A record with a 145-8.

“It’s the greatest feeling ever,” Fischer said of her second-place finish. “I’m really, really excited. It’s

“On my third wind-up, I thought, ‘Just shut up and throw, Cory,’ ” Mata said. “That’s always what my coach tells me because I think too much. Mentally, that’s my weakness.

I whipped it out there, and I fell in the ring because I threw it so hard.”

Green, who is in his first year as the coach of DeKalb, jokingly took credit for the good throw because he was absent for her final attempt.

“What happens is whenever I’m over there, she’ll scratch or foul,” Green laughed. “I left and to see Savannah (Long) get her medal (in the 100 hurdles) and told (DeKalb freshman Maddie Overton) to let me know what happens. I was sitting in the stands and (Overton) said she got 128.”

Feuerbach, who already held the Sycamore record in the discus before her throw Saturday, said there wasn’t anything special about how her throw felt on her release, but added that it was a weight off her

shoulders that she finally broke the 120-foot mark. Sycamore coach Joe McCormick said he was happy that his senior thrower was able to end her career by getting the mark she wanted so badly.

“It’s that 120 mark … a 119-9, a 1198 – a 120 is just so much rounder,” McCormick laughed “It’s a nicer mark.

You got that 20 mark. I know that’s been the monkey on her back and she really wanted to medal. I’m just so proud of her. It’s a great day.”

Harrod took second in the 400-meter (58.84 seconds) and the 800 (2:14.76) for the Royals. It is the second year in a row that she was the runner-up in the 800 in Class 1A. “I have more work to do,” Harrod said. “I’ll be back next year stronger and better than ever.”

Long, who plans to run for Southern Illinois University next season, came into the state meet with the top time in the sectional meets – but was seeded second after the prelims Friday, behind Brown. Green, who said he pushed Long all season, was all smiles in the grandstands after the race.

“Nobody has worked harder than

that girl to get the state championship. It was a great day,” he said.

“Just the way it happened – she was losing and, then all of a sudden the last 40 meters, she gave all she had left and she deserved it.”

She became the first DeKalb girls state champion since Jasmine Brown took the top prize in the triple jump in 2013. With the Barbs winning their

first sectional title in school history this season at the Class 3A Huntley Sectional, Green said that Long leaves a lasting legacy for the returning DeKalb athletes.

“It helps our younger kids,” he said. “If you take the work ethic that Savannah has – she has a [heck] of a work ethic – and use it out on the track, you’ll be on that podium.”

IC loses 4-run lead, then regional final

ecarifio@shawmedia.com LANARK – Two outs away from an upset over the hosts and a Class 1A regional championship, the Indian Creek baseball team couldn’t hold on Saturday in a 6-5 loss to Eastland in eight innings.

The No. 3 Timberwolves (13-15) led, 5-1, in the bottom of the sixth against the No. 2 Cougars (20-9) and 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but No. 8 hitter Tanner Giedd hit a one-out single to right field, scoring Payton Clouse from third off Indian Creek reliever Austin Sommerfeld.

The Cougars still had two on and one out, but Sommerfeld induced two popups to force extra innings.

After the Timberwolves could only muster a walk in the eighth off reliever and Cougar ace Zach Randecker – who was available because of a light work load in a semifinal Wednesday – the first three Eastland batters singled to start the eighth, including the winning hit by Randecker on a full count.

“I was so proud of the effort today,” Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz said.

“We pitched very well. We fielded the ball very well. We had a few timely hits.

I have absolutely no complaints about how we played today. They scored one more run than us, but it wasn’t because we have them anything. They just had one more hit and one more play.”

He started by hitting Brock Myers and walking Olin Simpson and Caleb Cursio, setting up a double to center by Jordan Morris to score three runs.

Morris settled down, allowing only two hits between the second and fifth innings as the Timberwovles scored twice in the fourth – a single by Sommerfeld scored Cursio and Morris scored on a wild pitch – to push the lead to 5-1.

“For a sophomore to come out there, attack the zone and keep them off-balance, then that huge hit he had in the game” Piekarz said of Morris. “Their guy was pitching well, he just had trouble throwing strikes there. We were able to make him pay with the three walks and Jordan’s hit.”

But Morris struggled in the sixth.

“It was an amazing ending,” Eastland coach Weston Burkholder said. “It was a rough middle I guess, two through five was a little gut-wrenching. We started off good, the second inning we walked three and a big hit for them. We looked a little scared after that, and around the sixth inning I challenged them. I told them there’s six outs left in our season if you don’t do something. We strung together a couple hits together and scored three there in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. That was huge.”

The Timberwolves had only six hits in the game, five of them off Christains – who struck out 12 in five innings but walked three and hit a batter. Randecker pitched the final three innings, allowing only a double to Trevor Guerra – who was the only one of the Timberwolves with two hits – and striking out five.

“He’s been real competitive, he’s had his moments, but I put him in the toughest spots,” Burkholder said of Randecker. “He started as a freshman on the pitching staff and he’s been a leader here, the only senior to stick it out for four years, and a great way to end the season here at home.”

Before his game-winning hit in the eighth, Rendecker was 0 for 3, including making the final out of the seventh.

“I was just thinking hit the ball and get it in the outfield,” Randecker said.

“We needed to move up those runners and that’s what I was trying to do.”

Burkholder said he expects that kind of clutch attitude from the team’s only senior.

“He hit the ball hard two times,” Burkholder said. “He’s been struggling here of late but coming on now. We’ve been working on his swing, and being a senior he’s been working really hard cause he knows he’s been struggling. Hats off to that – most kids wouldn’t do that.”

The Timberwolves beat Hiawatha, 6-4, on Thursday to advance to the final, erasing an early 3-0 deficit to get the win.

“It’s tough, but that’s why you play seven innings,” Piekarz said. “You saw on Thursday we were the team that did that, where Kirkland took the lead on us, and we had to come back. We knew they were a good team and we knew we had to keep making plays. But you have to give them credit they started hitting the ball and they started finding holes where they didn’t the first five and a half innings.”

Piekarz said he’s optimistic about what lies ahead for his young team that has only three seniors.

“We lost almost our whole team – this was a team that had zero varsity experience except for two people,” Piekarz said. “For them to grow as much as they did this year, they should be very proud. I’m very proud of how much they’ve grown and how much they improved.”

CLASS 3A DeKALB TRACK AND FIELD SECTIONAL

DeKalb 3rd; Tate qualifies for state in 4 events

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The Class 3A boys track and field DeKalb Sectional was completed Saturday morning with Huntley winning the meet and DeKalb finishing third.

In the second go around of the sectional meet after timing malfunctions Friday night, DeKalb finished with 72.5 points behind Grant and Huntley. Huntley finished with a comfortable 121 to 89 lead in the final standings. Although DeKalb finished almost 50 points behind Huntley, the program is sending multiple athletes to the state meet in Charleston next week.

DeKalb coach Tim Holt was relieved to complete the meet without a recurrence of Friday’s malfunctions.

“We had two cameras going today,

and Jacobs High School helped us out a lot,” Holt said. “It would’ve been nice to get this meet in last night, of course, and to get that 4x100 time to count, but we ended up having to do the whole thing over, but we’re still able to send them to state.”

DeKalb athletes who qualified for the state meet include the Zurek Day in the 300-meter hurdles, Izaiah Webb in pole vault, and the 100-meter relay team of Day, Tony Tate, Tristan Bujarski and Aljuwan Smith. Tate qualified for three other events – the long jump with a jump of 22 feet, 1 inch, the 100 dash in 10.6 seconds, and the 200 dash with a 21.88. Webb jumped 15-1 in the pole vault.

Tate won both the 100 and 200 by channeling some extra motivation he got from earlier in the meet.

“I felt like I ran alright, but I felt good in those races,” Tate said. “I had

a little bit of motivation by not finishing in the 4x100 the way I wanted to, so I was a little angry, and I took it out on the track. It’s a little nerve wracking having to come back and finished today, but I feel like it was a blessing in disguise to give us a whole new opportunity to compete and give it another chance on the track.”

Day’s time in the 300 hurdles was 39.24 seconds that was good for second place and his 100 relay team finished in second place with a time of 42.49.

“I felt good out there,” Day said.

“It’s all about pushing myself and making the state time which I did.

In late 2012, WADA asked for all 67 samples to be retested in Lausanne. One tested positive for low levels of a banned substance, 54 were clean and 12 had too little volume for proper testing. The Lausanne lab destroyed the samples after a standard three-month storage period despite a request from WADA to keep them.

An investigation by the Lausanne hospital, opened within days of the Pound report, cleared the lab of wrongdoing. Rodchenkov is now at the center of a scandal over Russian doping at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

CHICAGO – The White Sox’s offense has been struggling, but a struggling offense still can produce enough to win a game.

It happened through much of April when, “collectively,” the Sox weren’t all “clicking” at the plate, as manager Robin Ventura put it. But it “clicked” when it had to for a dominating pitching staff.

“I think we got hits when we needed them,” Ventura said. “There wasn’t anybody hitting .450, so on that part we still haven’t gotten to that point we felt it was clicking offensively.

“For us, our pitching has been the impressive thing. The defense has been better, and that will keep you in games when you’re not clicking offensively.”

That was precisely the picture Sunday, when the Sox went a dismal 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position against Kansas City.

But the lone hit in that 1-for-11 statistic came in the fifth from Melky Cabrera with two outs and the bases loaded.

Cabrera singled home two runs, making the difference in a 3-2 Sox victory and salvaging the last game of the threegame series.

“It was important. I had a good pitch to hit and we won the game,” Cabrera said. “It was a very important game for us. We needed to win that one.”

“It was just a clutch hit for us.

“It kind of relieved a lot of the pressure.”

It especially helped Rodon (2-4), who had lost his past three starts.

“We didn’t want to get swept during that series,” the lefty said. “I came out and pitched the best I could and gave the team a chance to win.

“It’s important to come back. The boys hit the ball for me and the defense was great.

“All those [Royals] can hit, and it’s a tough lineup. I just tried to throw strikes and let the defense work behind me.”

That was the formula in April, and it may prove to be what the Sox will continue to need.

“That’s how games are won,” said Frazier, whose 13th homer tied the score at 1. “I’ve said it before, you have to step up. Guys have to step up when the opportunity comes.”

Cubs slowed again by Bumgarner, Giants

SAN FRANCISCO – Off to a historically good start, the Cubs finally appear to be slowing down.

Of course, Madison Bumgarner probably had something to do with that.

The left-hander pitched 72/3 dominant innings and doubled in a run in the fifth to lift the San Francisco Giants over the Cubs, 1-0, on Sunday night.

The loss was the Cubs fourth in six games to start a nine-game road trip.

The Giants won for the 11th time in 12 games and took two of three from a Cubs team with the best record in baseball.

Bumgarner (6-2) struck out six and allowed three hits and two walks while winning his fifth straight decision. The Giants have won each of the left-hander’s

last six starts.

Entering play, the Cubs (29-13) had their best record in franchise history through 41 games since 1918.

“They played well, we played well.

Their pitcher drove in the winning run,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said.

“There’s nothing to be upset about when your team plays that hard and that well. Sometimes you don’t win. We pitched great but so did they. And they got the run and we did not.”

The Giants won despite a persistent problem hitting with runners in scoring position.

They were 0 for 7 in that department and have 16 hits in their last 98 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Bumgarner’s run-scoring double to left off Kyle Hendricks (2-4) followed Gregor Blanco’s leadoff walk.

As a long-term PPI user, you should consider the possible drug interactions and side effects of PPIs. They may decrease the effectiveness of clopidogrel (Plavix, others), a medication that helps prevent artery-clogging blood clots.

In addition, people taking PPIs seem to be more likely to get pneumonia than those who aren’t. That’s because some cases of pneumonia are caused when stomach contents are regurgitated up into the throat, and then drop down into the lungs. Since acid kills bacteria, stomach contents that are low in acid are more likely to contain bacteria.

Stomach acid also helps you absorb calcium in your diet. Theoretically, that might mean long-term use of PPIs would make you vulnerable to thin bones (osteopenia or osteoporosis). However, the evidence for that is weak. Experts do not recommend, for example, that people taking long-term PPIs get bone density tests or take calcium pills. However, I’d advise you to eat calcium-rich foods.

Even if you have a prescription for a PPI, you and your doctor should review the reasons for it periodically to make sure they’re still valid. If you do need that prescription – and many people do – it should be for the lowest effective dose.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve had heartburn for years, and I began taking Prilosec as soon as it became available. It gives me relief, but I worry about taking any drug for a long time. Should I be worried?

Dear Reader: As I’ve often said, no drug is 100 percent safe. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take one if you need it. But you continually should weigh the risks and benefits.

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), a drug that reduces stomach acid.

We need stomach acid to help digest food, but if too much of it is produced, it can inflame and irritate the esophagus, causing heartburn. (Recurring heartburn is called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.) It also can cause ulcers in the stomach and small intestine.

PPIs are the most commonly prescribed drugs for acid reflux and heartburn. They include omeprazole (Prilosec), esomeprazole (Nexium), lansoprazole (Prevacid), pantroprazole (Protonix) and three other medicines. The four PPI drugs I’ve mentioned have other brand names in addition to the ones listed.

So, like you, many people take PPIs. Also like you, people often take PPIs every day for years. This makes sense if you have a chronic problem with stomach acid, but the occasional case of mild heartburn does not need to be treated with a PPI. For that kind of spot duty, antacid medicines such as Tums, Rolaids and Maalox likely will do the trick. They directly counteract acid in your stomach. So will drugs such as cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid) and ranitidine (Zantac). Like the PPIs, these drugs cause your stomach to make less acid, but they work faster than PPIs. You also can tackle your heartburn with changes that don’t involve taking any medicine. Eat smaller meals and cut

Henry Gurler

is known as the father of barbed wire. He invented barbed wire with the help of a coffee mill where he placed barbs along a wire and twisted another wire around it to keep it in place. By his death in 1906, Glidden was named one of the richest men in America, Glidden gave 63 acres of his homestead as the site for Northern Illinois Normal School which opened in 1898.

(1840-1928)

Henry Gurler was a Civil War veteran in the 42nd and 132nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was owner of Clover Farm in Afton Township where he developed the dairy innovations which made him world famous. Clover Dairy farm was the first in the state of Illinois to test for tuberculosis.

Awarded a gold medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition for his innovations in clean milk and cold storage when his samples of milk remained sweet for four days after arrival in Paris despite seventeen days of transit. His improvements in the dairy industry won him respect of dairymen all over the world.

Charlie Bradt (1903-2011)

A large towering stone is the centerpieces for the surrounding family in the “Bradt Circle.” Among the family in the circle is the grave of Charlie Bradt who lived to be 108 years of age. Charlie established Bradt Travel in DeKalb and was the first board president of Kishwaukee Country Club and helped to establish Oak Crest and Voluntary Action Center. He served on many committees and boards.

Clinton Rosette (1850-1909)

Rosette owned a printing and publishing business in DeKalb, and was editor of the DeKalb Chronicle.

He helped found Northern Illinois University and is recognized as the original patriarch for NIU. In 1968 DeKalb School District honored him by naming a school after him.

Katz Family

The Katz families of DeKalb have been loyal supporters of this community. The family was owner of Fourth Street Motor Sales and DeKalb Motor Sales. Best Known today for the family park that turned into a complex on Dresser Road in DeKalb. The six acre park has several lighted baseball diamonds, a skate park area, playground equipment, shelter house and dog park. One of the Katz’s grave has the following inscription - ”God Bless America, with their strength of character and spirit of idealism, they left a legacy of devotion to the family and community.” Today the Katz family is still active in the area in the banking business.

Glidden Gl The Fairview Park Cemetery Association and the DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association are partnering to host a walking tour at the Fairview Cemetery, as well as tours of the cemetery’s historic and recently refurbished mausoleum.

The self-guided walking tours starting at the mausoleum will feature an annotated map directing visitors to the grave sites of prominent citizens and explaining their importance to the community. Forty sites will be listed, including the graves of such notable figures as Isaac Ellwood, Jacob Haish, John Glidden and Annie Glidden.

Jacob & Sarah Haish

Jacob Haish was one of the first inventors of barbed wire. In competition with other barbed wire inventors, Isaac Ellwood and Joseph Glidden, he patented three styles of barbed fencing, but was most famous for his “S-barb” design. Haish had bequeathed a $150,000 gift to the library in his will in 1931. The Haish Memorial Library otherwise known as the DeKalb Public Library still stands as a tribute to him today. Haish would have been the first thing you see when you entered the cemetery.

However, over time the land to the east has sold and First Street became the main entrance leaving Haish’s beautiful monument at the back of the cemetery.

(1879-1959)

William Eckhardt was the first Farm Advisor in the nation. He was appointed to that position by newly formed DeKalb Soil Improvement Association on June 1, 1912. The association would later split and become the Farm Bureau and DeKalb AgResearch.

Eckhardt patented a way of dying corn which is still used today.

Dee Palmer (1914-2011)

Dee Palmer was a conductor of the DeKalb Municipal Band for 63 years. The band made up of about 50 musicians performs free concerts each week during the summer. The concerts are sponsored by the City and DeKalb Park District.

Ellwood Family Mausoleum (1886-1980)

Originally from New York, Isaac Ellwood settled in DeKalb where he opened a hardware and implement store. He rose to prominence when he began to acquire farm properties around the area. He eventually began to import Percheron draft horses which resulted in a 3,400 acres stock farm. Ellwood met Henry Rose of Waterman who had patented a fence that intrigued Ellwood, who thought he could improve it. He did just that with his version of barbed wire. The businessman in Ellwood recognized that another inventor, Joseph Glidden had a better version of fencing, so Ellwood bought 1/2 partnership in the Glidden design. The family Mausoleum holds 23 members of Ellwood family.

Thomas Jefferson Lewis, age 12 was the first Boy Scout in America to pass away; he was buried in his Scout uniform. The DeKalb area mourned his death on June 30, 1916 and was DeKalb County Chronicle front page news. Cub Scout Pack #131 place flags on Veterans’ graves annually on the Saturday prior to Memorial Day. This year ,that date coincides with the Walking Tour at Fairview Park Cemetery. The last flag placed by the Pack is next to the tombstone of TJ Lewis which sports the Boy Scout emblem.
