Killer Nile crocodiles in Florida? POLL

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Step aside, Burmese python – you may no longer be Florida’s scariest invasive species. Researchers have confirmed that three Nile crocodiles were captured near Miami, and they say it’s possible more of the man-eating reptiles still are out there, although no one can say for sure.

The big question now: How did they get to Florida?

“They didn’t swim from Africa,” University of Florida herpetologist Kenneth Krysko said.

“But we really don’t know how they got into the wild.”

Krysko and his co-authors just published a paper showing that DNA testing proved the three animals captured in 2009, 2011 and 2014 are Nile crocs, a species whose males grow to over 16 feet long and weigh upward of 1,600 pounds. Nile crocs are believed to be responsible for up to 200 fatalities annually in their native sub-Saharan Africa. Compare that with

an annual average of six reported shark attack deaths globally.

Krysko, who works at UF’s Florida Museum of Natural History, said the captured crocodiles matched genetically, meaning they are related to one another, but didn’t match Nile crocs kept at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and other licensed Florida attractions. That means the crocs probably were brought to Florida illegally by an unlicensed reptile collector who either didn’t contain them properly, allowing them to escape, or, more sinisterly, planted them in the Everglades in hopes they would multiply.

The Nile croc, if it became established in the Everglades, would pose another invasive threat to its teetering ecosystem. Through crossbreeding, they could endanger the smaller, less aggressive American crocodiles, which have never been responsible for a confirmed human death in the U.S. About 1,000 American crocodiles live in South Florida, mostly in mangroves and estuaries. Any hybrids would degrade the genetic integrity of the endangered American variety.

The KishHealth System Physical Therapy Center, part of Northwestern Medicine, will host its ninth annual 5K Run/Walk event at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The event is intended to promote health and fitness for the local community. Although many participants will run, this event is intended for walkers as well. Strollers are welcome but no pets are allowed. Proceeds will be donated to Adventure Works of DeKalb County, a nonprofit, interactive counseling agency that serves youth ages 6 to 18 providing individual, family and group counseling through adventure.

The run/walk will start and end at the KishHealth System Physical Therapy Center, 2111 Midlands Court, Sycamore. The course is flat and follows city streets.

Event-day registration and packet pick-up will be available from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. Registration closes at 7:45 a.m. and the run/walk begins promptly

at 8 a.m. Pre-registered runners are guaranteed a race T-shirt. Event-day registrants will receive a T-shirt while supplies last.

Refreshments will be served to all participants both pre- and post-race. Physical Therapy Center staff will be available for post-event stretching and massage. Post-event stretching, food, music and water will be provided.

Registration fees are $20 for the general public, and $25 for event-day registrants. Awards are given to the overall male and female winners, plus the top three male and female runners in these age groups: 14 and younger, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+. A number of raffle prizes also will be given out.

Nursing home workers picket, are seeking pay raise

rgillespie@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Dozens of DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center union workers hoisted picket signs Thursday along the road outside the facility to protest county officials’ refusal to budge on offering some union employees a 1 percent pay raise.

“One percent won’t pay the rent,” read a sign Jane Bock pumped in the air. Bock, a 50-year-old DeKalb resident, has worked at the nursing home as a laundry aide for going on four years.

She and the dozens of other county employees on the picket line are represented by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council 31. The union represents about 150 county nursing home workers, in addition to 60 health department employees and 34 county government personnel.

Many county nursing home workers earn low or even the minimum hourly wage, making a 1 percent increase worth in some cases only pennies more an hour. The certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, and housekeeping, dietary and laundry workers are paid up to $600 a year to stay in the county’s employ – in an industry known for high turnover. The workers get extra money if they don’t take unscheduled days off or have other attendance issues.

They chose to demonstrate after May 12 negotiations with county managers yielded no agreement on wages and bonuses. AFSCME represents certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, and housekeeping, dietary and laundry workers, several of whom joined the demonstration.

“I take no exception to that (picketing),” said Paul Miller, head of the county’s planning and zoning department who also represents the county administration on all three of the AFSCME bargaining units. “That is their right, the county would never object to that.”

The union and county have agreed to mediation to help resolve the lingering issues. Nevertheless, both sides have said there’s no vitriol between them, especially compared with what’s happening at the state level.

“So far, we’ve been able to have a good relationship with the county,” said Sara Dorner, the AFSCME staff representative. “We just hope that we can keep that good relationship. But part of that relationship is recognizing that our people need to make a living wage.”

Bock’s workday starts at 4 a.m. She is part of a team that washes clothes for residents of the 190-bed-facility, folds them and returns them to their closet or drawer. She makes just more than minimum wage, according to salary data provided by the county, and another laundry worker who has been there for 21 years has only reached $10.23 an hour, records show.

In fact, the salary information reveals that 19 of the 31 union dietary

aides employed at the nursing home make $8.25 per hour. Of the 11, housekeeping workers there, five are at minimum wage, and a 24-year-employee has been able to climb to $10.34.

While the nursing assistants make at least $11 an hour, $18.01 an hour is the highest rate, according to the salary information – and that’s with 35 years of service.

“It’s a misconception that people on these jobs are just high school students,” Dorner said . “We have several people who need to support families on this job, and they can’t.”

Only five nonunion county employees, total, make minimum wage. The county has been relatively consistent in keeping employee raises to a minimum. Nonunion employees and some department heads received 1 percent raises this year, according to the county’s budget plans, as did unionized court services officers. Unionized po-

lice and highway department workers received 2 percent raises this year.

Mark Pietrowski, chairman of the DeKalb County Board, which ultimately approves the county budget, would not comment on union employees wages or the collective bargaining.

“I’m hopeful that our negotiating team can come up with an agreement that both sides agree with,” Pietrowski said. “I believe that both sides are close, I’m holding out hope for that.”

Workers said they are attracted to the positions in the first place by the idea of working for the government – job security – and a chance to grow and earn more money over time. They said they don’t want to quit their jobs, they just want to be better compensated.

“We love our (nursing home) residents. We love DeKalb County,” Bock said. “It’s really hard to leave when you get so attached.”

Charles Ridulph: Schmack promised to drop charges against McCullough

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The brother of a 7-year-old Sycamore girl murdered in 1957 has added to his request to have a special prosecutor appointed in the recently dismissed murder case against Jack McCullough.

In a filing in DeKalb County Court this week, Charles Ridulph claims DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack made a promise during his 2012 campaign to drop murder charges against McCullough, and this constitutes a conflict of interest.

McCullough was convicted of Maria Ridulph’s murder in 2012, and the case was upheld on appeal. Judge William Brady agreed with DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack’s request to dismiss murder charges against McCullough, 76, last month.

“The only just solution would be the appointment of a special prosecutor to review Mr. Schmack’s findings to

Chicago attorney Gabriel Fuentes, who represented McCullough for free in his bid to get out of prison, declined to comment Thursday on the request.

Schmack said his office is preparing a response, which must be filed before June 3. While he declined further comment on the matter, Schmack previously has denied his actions in the case were politically motivated.

In the amended motion for a special prosecutor, Brandwein claims his argument would be supported by testimo-

ny from Charles Ridulph and former DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Julie Trevarthen.

During McCullough’s bench trial in the 2012 election year, Trevarthen “heard Mr. Schmack state that if elected as state’s attorney he would dismiss the murder charges,” according to the motion. She also would testify that Schmack posted on Facebook “indicating that Mr. McCullough was innocent and this prosecution was politically motivated,” according to court documents.

Trevarthen worked under thenState’s Attorney Clay Campbell.

Schmack defeated Campbell in the No-

vember 2012 election and brought in his own team of prosecutors when he took office. Trevarthen and Victor Escarcida didn’t stay on. Both had prosecuted the McCullough case.

“The then-candidate for state’s attorney had made up his mind that Mr. McCullough was innocent without being privileged to the state’s evidence and after being elected followed through on his promise to drop charges against Mr. McCullough,” Brandwein wrote in the motion. “This predisposed mindset of Mr. Schmack has created a conflict of interest between his duty as state’s attorney and his campaign promise not to go forward with this case.”

Brandwein said this puts the public’s trust in the criminal justice system in question and requires the appointment of a special prosecutor.

The case is next up in court June 23.

McCullough, who returned to Seattle after his case was dismissed last month, is technically no longer involved in the case.

Kingston, Genoa officials eager for school district plans

browland@shawmedia.com KINGSTON – Municipal leaders in Kingston and Genoa said Thursday they are eager to hear more about the plans the Genoa-Kingston School District 424 board is considering for consolidating the school district.

One of the plans under consideration is closing Kingston Elementary School, Davenport Elementary School and Genoa-Kingston Middle School and turning the district’s other two schools into academic centers. The district would renovate Genoa-Kingston High School to accommodate students in grades 7 through 12 and renovate Genoa Elementary School to accommodate kindergarten through sixth-grade students.

Genoa Mayor Mark Vicary said he had heard about the proposals, but had no official communication with school administrators.

“We want to discuss this more with the school board,” Vicary said Thursday. “We’re looking forward to hearing more.”

Kingston Village President Jim Baenziger said he heard rumors about what was being discussed, but

hadn’t heard from board members or district administrators about any plans to close the only school in his village.

He said he wants to know what would happen to the Kingston Elementary School building, should the school district decide to move forward with a plan to create two academic centers.

At a meeting in April, District 424 Superintendent Joe Burgess told the school board that “it is important to communicate the value of the

district’s intergovernmental agreements with the City of Genoa and Genoa Park District and many other community members” and that “the city and the parks have been very positive and extremely supportive and will assist with communicating our message to the community,” according to minutes of the meeting posted on the district’s website.

Both Vicary and Baenziger said they have had no formal discussions with or communication with school administrators about the proposals.

District 424 board President Paul Kruse said Thursday that there had been informal meetings with municipal officials and referred to city and village partners in the district’s plans. Kruse said it was still early in the process and that the school board hadn’t made any decisions about the proposals.

Man faces burglary charges in DeKalb break-in DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – A 25-year-old man is facing felony charges after police said he broke into a friend’s downtown apartment, destroyed her property and started a fire, police said Thursday.

Jacob E. Roodhouse, 25, a transient, faces charges of attempted residential arson, residential burglary and criminal damage to property, according to a news release from DeKalb police. If convicted of the most serious charge, residential burglary, Roodhouse could face four to 15 years in prison.

Police were called at 6:52 a.m.

Wednesday to an apartment in the 100

block of East Lincoln Highway, where a woman told them she had returned home to find someone had forced their way into her apartment through the front door, according to the news release.

Police said after Roodhouse entered the woman’s apartment, he destroyed two televisions, Jacob a microwave and a cable Roodhouse box. Police said he also gathered up the woman’s clothes, put them on her bed, sprayed them with lighter fluid and set them on fire.

The victim told police that she thought it might be a friend of hers who

had sent a text message to her Tuesday evening telling her he was going to destroy her apartment, police said.

Investigators found blood samples inside the apartment, and police believe that the person who broke in cut their hand, according to the news release. Roodhouse was later found in the 500 block of College Avenue, with what police described as “an obvious injury to his right hand that had dried blood on it.”

Roodhouse was being held in the DeKalb County Jail on $100,000 bond.

He would have to post $10,000 bail to be released and would be required to be on electronic home monitoring.

His next court date is June 2.

Cyril R. Sherman, age 86, of Maple Park, IL, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at his home.

He was born May 31, 1929, in Aurora, IL, the son of Raymond and Louise (Jeanblanc) Sherman.

Cyril was united in marriage May 26, 1951, to Nancy L. Schwartz and they spent the next 64 happy years of their lives together. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption in Maple Park, IL, and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Sherman was a longtime member of the Aurora Carpenters Local # 916 in Aurora, IL. Cyril was also a member of the Masonic Order Raven Lodge #303 in Oswego, IL. He had great

interest and enjoyed working with gas engines.

Cyril was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Hastert’s honorary NIU degree rescinded DeKALB – Now, it’s as if Northern Illinois University never honored former U.S. Rep. Dennis Hastert after trustees voted unanimously Thursday to rescind his NIU honorary degree.

Hastert, a now-infamous alumnus of the university, was given an honorary Doctor of Laws in 1999. Decades before, he had earned his master’s degree at NIU. “While Hastert has been a longtime supporter and advocate for NIU, his recent admission of criminal activity and sexual abuse of children does not reflect the values of the university or the spirit in which the degree was awarded,” NIU’s eight trustees said, collectively.

Further, a federal judge Thursday said the former Speaker of the House must report to federal prison by June 22 to start serving his 15-month sentence.

Hastert, 74, an Illinois Republican, was sentenced April 27 after pleading guilty to charges he evaded bank laws when he paid about $3.5 million to cov-

er up decades-old sexual abuse. He molested an athlete he coached as head of the wrestling program at Yorkville High School – where he also taught.

The move to rescind his honor is an unprecedented one for the university, as Hastert is the first to have his NIU honorary degree revoked.

But it follows suit with his undergraduate alma mater Wheaton College. The school removed “J. Dennis Hastert” from its Center for Economics, Government and Public Policy, and Hastert resigned from its advisory board.

Lewis University had given the former congressman an honorary degree in 2002, and planned to take it away.

Last month, the NIU Graduate Council’s Honorary Degree Committee officially asked for the honor to be stripped from the Illinois leader who, at one point, was second in line to the U.S. presidency.

Committee members said in a statement this month that what Hastert did, “constitutes incontrovertible evidence that he has acted in ways that do not reflect the values of the institution.”

Carl Littlejohn

(1887-1966)

Carl Littlejohn was a DeKalb educator and member of the DeKalb school system professional staff for 50 years.

He began his career as a teacher and eventually served as principal of The Glidden, Ellwood and at he school named after him in 1954.

Elizabeth Sue Grabow (Jane Doe) (1958-1976)

Elizabeth Sue Grabow was known as “Jane Doe” for thirteen years. Her unidentified body was found on an abandoned farm in Sycamore in 1976. Police determined that she had been there for a number of years by the apple found in her pocket.

This was the first time facial reconstruction with clay was used to help identify the victim introducing us to the new field of Forensic Anthropology. The eerie photo was published in newspapers around the world. A NBC TV episode of “Quincy” was put together to help explain the process used to reconstruct the face.

On June 21, 1989 an official announcement stated that Jane Doe had been identified as Elizabeth Sue Grabow.

Glidden The Fairview Park Cemetery Association and the DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association are partnering to host a walking tour at the Fairview Cemetery, as well as tours of the cemetery’s historic and recently refurbished mausoleum.

The self-guided walking tours starting at the mausoleum will feature an annotated map directing visitors to the grave sites of prominent citizens and explaining their importance to the community. Dennis Collins attended Northern Illinois University and studied law at Northwestern.

In 1928 he opened a law office in DeKalb and continued his practice until his death in 1974.

He served a record fortytwo years in the Illinois State Legislature with twelve years as a Representative and thirty years as a Senator.

Ben Gordon (1908-1971)

Ben Gordon was a DeKalb merchant and civic leader. He operated Gordon’s Hardware in downtown DeKalb. He served as chairman of the DeKalb County Mental Health Board. In 1968 the Ben Gordon Center was established which provides mental health counseling and substance abuse treatment services to DeKalb County. The Center is now part of the Kish Health System

Charlie Gunn (1886-1980)

Charlie Gunn was an early leader in hybrid corn research and a co-founder of DEKALB AgResearch. He came to DeKalb County as a corn breeder and worked with open-pollinated varieties and developed one variety grown in Northern Illinois known as “Gunn’s Western Plowman.”

One of his early varieties, 404A, became the foundation for what became DEKALB AgResearch.

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb woman, who was charged with murder in the death of a 15-month-old boy who bit her in 2014, plans to take her case to a jury in September.

Jessica Breuer, 27, formerly of the 500 block of East Taylor Street, faces up to life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder.

Jessica Police said she was L. Breuer holding John B. Hawks on April 23, 2014, when the child bit her on the chest, angering her so much she squeezed his neck for 10 to 12 minutes while the boy’s mother slept nearby, authorities said.

The boy and his mother were staying at Breuer’s apartment at Taylor Street Plaza at the time; Hawks died less than a month later on May 16.

In November 2014, Breuer was found mentally fit to stand trial on charges of murder and aggravated battery.

DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch, who represents Breuer, was out of the office Thursday and couldn’t be reached for comment.

DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein also couldn’t be reached.

A status review in the case has been set for June 1 with a final jury status set for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 15.

A jury trial is to start at 10 a.m. Sept.

20, according to court records.

Breuer remains at the DeKalb County Jail in lieu of $2.5 million bond.

SPRINGFIELD – An investigator hired by then-state Treasurer Dan Rutherford to review a former employee’s allegations of sexual harassment by the one-time gubernatorial hopeful found no evidence of harassment or retaliation, according to a copy of the review obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday.

The investigation, which Rutherford insisted was an independent review, was conducted by a Chicago-based firm that concluded interviews, travel vouchers and text messages didn’t corroborate Edmund Michalowski’s claims that he endured Rutherford’s unwanted sexual advances from 2011 to 2013, and that he was passed over for promotions or raises as a result.

Michalowski filed a federal lawsuit outlining his allegations in February 2014, two weeks after Rutherford publicly said a former employee had demanded $300,000 to stymie legal action for his alleged “misconduct.” Rutherford ordered the review to clear his name, but the lawsuit dashed his hopes of winning the Republican nomination for governor that March.

Judge orders Dennis Hastert to report to prison by June 22

CHICAGO – Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert has been ordered to report to prison by June 22 to begin serving a 15-month sentence in his hush-money case.

U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Durkin entered an order Thursday that said Hastert must surrender “to the designated institution” by 2 p.m. that day. The order doesn’t identify the prison. A Bureau of Prisons spokesman said that information won’t be released until Hastert reports.

Hastert pleaded guilty to violating banking laws while seeking to pay $3.5 million to someone he sexually molested.

Durkin described the 74-year-old Republican from Illinois as “a serial child molest-

Clinton grapples with Trump in the spotlight

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Donald Trump kept himself planted firmly in the political spotlight this week with one headline-grabbing move after another – launching a social media defense of his treatment of women, listing possible Supreme Court nominees, rapidly declaring an Egyptian plane crash an act of terrorism.

His likely general election opponent, Hillary Clinton, seemed content to hang in the background.

But Clinton’s stay-abovethe-fray attitude masks unresolved questions that have gnawed at her campaign since Trump virtually locked up the Republican nomination. How can the wonkish Clinton counteract Trump’s finely tuned ability to command attention?

Can she win the White House by letting Trump run on his terms, hoping his unorthodox candidacy wears thin with voters by November?

Or does she need to make a positive case for her own candidacy, something she has struggled to articulate during the Democratic primary?

“She’s going to have to do things to keep her side motivated, to keep people excited, keep it aspirational,” said Steve Schale, a Florida Democratic strategist who advised President Barack Obama’s White House campaigns.

“He’s good at dominating the news cycle and changing the news cycle to fit his purposes,” said Rick Tyler, former communications director for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s failed presidential campaign.

“He has this ability to just change the trajectory of where the news is going by using amazing distractions that are just too delicious to pass up.”

To be sure, Clinton has overcome her messaging struggles in the primary and is close to clinching the Democratic nomination. But facing Trump will be another matter, with his capacity to set the tone for the day in the morning through frequent tweets and calls into news shows, catching his rivals off guard and leaving them scrambling to catch up.

The last days underscored Trump’s grip on the spotlight, and his willingness to stay there even when attention turns negative.

After a newspaper article detailing his behavior with women, Trump kept the story alive by repeatedly bashing the reporters and defending his actions. He shifted the conservation to his possible presidency by announcing a list of judges he might nominate to the high court. He then said on Twitter the roll out went so well that he might add more names.

In between, Trump said he could negotiate with North Korea’s leader. He called Ferguson, Missouri, and Oakland, California, more dangerous than Iraq. And he used the word “rape” in speaking about Bill Clinton’s past indiscretions.

While Clinton’s campaign released paper statements responding to some of Trump’s statements, the candidate herself stayed largely quiet. In an interview with CNN Thursday, she said Trump is “not qualified” to be president.

Clinton’s advisers and outside backers say they’re not making the same mistake as Trump’s Republican primary rivals. The GOP contenders spent months predicting the businessman’s collapse under the weight of a controversial comment – or collection of them – and tried to avoid alienating his supporters while they waited.

Morley Safer, who helped create CBS News, dead at 84

NEW YORK – Viewers didn’t need to see Morley Safer’s reporting to feel its effects.

They could have almost heard the yowling from the Oval Office and the Pentagon after Safer’s 1965 expose of a U.S. military atrocity in Vietnam that played an early role in changing Americans’ view of the war.

They likely felt a flush of gratitude on learning that Safer’s 1983 investigation of justice gone awry resulted in the Morley Safer release of a Texas man wrongfully sentenced to life in prison.

They might have headed to their wine shop with a heightened sense of purpose after word spread of Safer’s story that quoted medical experts who said red wine can be good for you.

Safer’s far-flung journalism got reactions and results during a 61-year career that found him equally at home reporting on social wrongs, the Orient Express, abstract art and the horrors of war.

That career came to an end this week, with a “60 Minutes” tribute Sunday and, then, with Safer’s death, at age 84, Thursday.

He is survived by his wife, the former Jane Fearer, and his daughter Sarah.

NBC News Special Correspondent Tom Brokaw visited with Safer last Friday, two days after his retirement was announced.

They spoke about the towering journalists of Safer’s era, men such as The Washington Post’s Ben Bradlee and “60 Minutes” creator-executive producer Don Hewitt.

Safer said quietly, “All the great ones are gone,” Brokaw recalled in an email.

“No, Morley, you’re still with us,” replied Brokaw before kissing Safer on the forehead.

During his 46 years on “60 Minutes,” Safer did 919 stories, from his first in 1970 about U.S. Sky Marshals to his last this March, a profile of Danish architect Bjarke Ingels.

It was in 1970 that Safer joined “60 Minutes,” then just two years old and far from the national institution it would become. He claimed the co-host chair alongside a talk-show-host-turnednewsman named Mike Wallace.

During the next four decades, Safer’s rich tobacco-and-whiskey-cured voice delivered stories that ranged from art, music and popular culture, to “gotcha” investigations, to one of his favorite pieces, which, in 1983, resulted in the release from prison of Lenell Geter, the engineer wrongly convicted of a holdup at a fast-food restaurant and serving a life sentence.

His honors include three George Foster Peabody awards, 12 Emmys and two George Polk Memorial Awards.

Born in Toronto in 1931, Safer began his news career in Canada and England before being hired by Reuters wire service in its London bureau. Then, in 1955, he was offered a correspondent’s job in the Canadian Broadcasting Company’s London bureau, where he worked nine years before CBS News hired him for its London bureau.

In 1965 he opened CBS’ Saigon bureau. That August, “The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite” aired a report by Safer that rocked viewers, who, at that point, remained mostly supportive of the U.S. war effort in Vietnam.

What he encountered, and captured on film, was the spectacle of American soldiers employing their Zippo lighters

to burn thatched-roof, mud-plastered huts to the ground, despite no resistance from the village’s residents.

Safer’s expose ignited a firestorm, with President Lyndon Johnson giving CBS President Frank Stanton a tongue-lashing.

Safer rotated in and out of Vietnam three times, then, in 1967, began three years as London bureau chief.

In 1970, he was brought to New York to succeed original co-host Harry Reasoner on an innovative newsmagazine that, in its third season, was still struggling in the ratings, and would rely on Safer and Wallace as its only co-anchors for the next five years.

He quickly became a fixture at “60 Minutes” – and part of that show’s rough-and-tumble behind-the-scenes culture as the stature and ratings of the show took off.

By 2006, Safer had reduced his output, accepting half-time status. But he remained after the departures of Wallace – who retired in 2006 at age 88, and died in 2012 – as well as Don Hewitt, who stepped down in 2004 at 81, and died in 2009, and Andy Rooney, who, at 92, ended 33 years as the resident essayist in October 2011, and died a month later.

CAIRO – An EgyptAir jetliner en route from Paris to Cairo with 66 people aboard veered wildly in flight and crashed in the Mediterranean Sea early Thursday, authorities said. Egyptian and Russian officials said it may have been brought down by terrorists.

There were no signs of survivors.

EgyptAir Flight 804, an Airbus A320 with 56 passengers and 10 crew members, went down about halfway between the Greek island of Crete and Egypt’s coastline, or about 175 miles offshore, after takeoff from Charles de Gaulle Airport, authorities said.

Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos said the plane spun all the way around and suddenly lost altitude just before vanishing from radar screens around 2:45 a.m. Cairo time.

He said it made a 90-degree left turn, then a full 360-degree turn to the right, plummeting from 38,000 feet to 15,000 feet. It disappeared at about 10,000 feet, he said. There were no reports of stormy weather at the time.

Egyptian and Greek authorities in ships and planes searched the suspected crash area throughout the day for traces of the airliner or its victims, with more help on the way from the

months.

In October, a Russian passenger plane that took off from an Egyptian Red Sea resort crashed in the Sinai, killing all 224 people aboard. Russia said it was brought down by a bomb, and a local branch of the Islamic State claimed responsibility.

Thursday’s disaster also raises questions about security at De Gaulle Airport, at a time when Western Europe has been on high alert over the deadly Islamic extremist attacks in Paris and at the Brussels airport and subway over the past six months.

French Foreign Minister JeanMarc Ayrault said that airport security had been tightened considerably before the disaster, in part because of the coming European soccer championship, which France is hosting.

The Egyptian military said it did not receive a distress call from the doomed plane, and Egypt’s state-run daily Al-Ahram quoted an unidentified airport official as saying the pilot did not send one. That could mean that whatever sent the aircraft plummeting into the sea was sudden.

Its erratic course suggested a number of possible explanations, including a catastrophic mechanical or structural failure, a bombing, or a struggle over the controls with a hijacker in the cockpit.

Russian response to doping shows problem persists

Of the things Vitaly Mutko, Russia’s minister of sports, wrote in his “apology” for what he described as Russia’s “problem” with doping, one is true: “It cannot be right that clean athletes should suffer for the behavior of others.”

That is exactly why Russia was suspended from international track and field competition by the International Association of Athletics Federations in November and why its participation in those events in August’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro is in limbo. Clean athletes should not be made to suffer for Russia’s systematic cheating.

Alas, that is not what Mutko had in mind, and his statement is far from demonstrating any acknowledgment, much less contrition, about the widespread state-sponsored doping of which Russia stands accused.

In the statement, published in The Sunday Times in Britain, Mutko crudely passes the buck, claiming that “serious mistakes have been made by the federation management, along with athletes and coaches.” Taking the hypocrisy up another notch, he declares, “We are ashamed of them.” Ashamed of whom? The athletes who were regularly fed anabolic steroids by the very officials who were supposed to be protecting them from performance-enhancing drugs, encouraged and assisted by state security agents? Where is the shame for the state agencies, including his own ministry, that are behind the doping of Russian athletes?

Of that, there is no hint in Mutko’s statement. He also gave no response to the report on Russian doping prepared for the World Anti-Doping Agency that was issued in November or the conclusion of Dick Pound, the chairman of the independent commission that wrote the report, who declared at the time that Mutko had to be aware of the program, “and if he’s aware of it, he’s complicit in it.”

The director of Russia’s anti-doping laboratory, Grigory Rodchenkov, now in self-imposed exile in the United States, recently provided astonishing details of how the doping was done during the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, with Russian agents swapping drug-tainted urine samples for clean samples and resealing the purportedly tamper-proof caps. The response of Mutko and other Russian officials has been to pose as aggrieved victims of “the information attack on Russian sport” and to threaten lawsuits.

Mutko no doubt calculated that his nonapology would persuade the International Association of Athletics Federations to lift Russia’s suspension in time for the Olympics. In fact, his refusal to address the role of the state and his ministry in the doping program is evidence that he and his government are nowhere near the “change of culture” that the IAAF wants to see before letting Russian athletes back on the field.

Obama’s new OT rule is bad for workers

President Barack Obama is right to want to put more money in the pockets of lower-paid workers. Issuing another government regulation, however, is not the best way to get it there.

Once a new Labor Department rule takes effect, workers earning between $23,660 and $47,476 will be entitled to overtime pay – extending a provision that already applies to the lowest-paid. The new upper threshold will be increased every three years in line with a measure of wage growth. More than 4 million workers will be newly eligible, according to the government, boosting wages by an estimated $12 billion over the next 10 years.

The vice president of the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank that pressed for the reform, praised it as “sort of a minimum wage for the middle class.” That’s exactly the problem: Like the minimum wage, the new overtime policy raises the cost of labor and thereby puts jobs at risk. The new rule is sure to have other unintended consequences, too, once employers start looking for ways around it. There are better ways to help workers.

Employers already contending with rising minimum wages will now be all the more likely to find ways to automate processes, cut workers’ hours, reduce other benefits and bonuses, or all of the above. In the case of overtime, the scope for this kind of arbitrage is especially wide: Where the newly eligible workers are paid more

than the minimum, basic rates can be cut to make room in the budget for the new mandate.

On top of any direct cost, there’s the added burden of one more complex layer of regulation and the overhead required to comply. Labor markets vary enormously from place to place and industry to industry. That’s why it’s best to let employers tailor their offers accordingly, according to their preferences and market conditions.

Please note: This is not a call for laissez-faire.

Be hands-on about improving workers’ prospects, by all means – but be smart about it. It’s not hard to devise policies that raise incomes while boosting, not reducing, demand for workers. The earned income tax credit does both, and works well. Expanding it should be a top priority. Helping workers move or retrain also serves both purposes. Numerous poorly coordinated subsidies for training and mobility are in place; they should be simpler, better attuned to the needs of employers, and more generous.

And there’s no better way to raise incomes and get more people into better jobs than to educate them well in the first place.

Ask Europe (average unemployment rate: 10.2 percent) what layer upon layer of kind-hearted, cost-enhancing regulation has done for the prospects of the working and nonworking poor.

Meddling ineffectually in the labor market may be good politics, but it does American workers no favors.

Trump’s judges list creates more problems than it solves

On Wednesday, Donald Trump’s campaign released a list of 11 judges, including familiar conservative favorites, whom Trump said he would use “as a guide to nominate our next United States Supreme Court Justices.” Even for Trump, who now dubs every policy position a “suggestion” and changes them almost hourly, that is pretty weak tea.

In fact, the list only underscores a number of problems plaguing Trump.

First, no one really imagines he knows who the judges are, what cases they’ve decided, and why they would be better or worse than others. (Does he ever read an opinion? This was the man who said his sister the judge “signs” bills.)

If he is ever asked about the judges – or why someone is not on the list – it will be painfully obvious he knows very little. Moreover, as soon as he learns that some or all of them do not favor the untrammeled exercise of executive power he might want, they are likely to disappear from consideration.

As conservative legal scholar John Yoo put it, “I am thrilled by this list. But that being said, I cannot trust Trump to keep his word. He has already flip-flopped on so many issues, before, during, and after the primary campaign. How do we know he would not start wheeling and dealing on judicial appointments if he were to win the Oval Office?”

Second, imagine Trump being asked about legal issues. Do you want a judge who thinks there is a right to privacy in the Constitution, Mr. Trump? The results would likely be cringe-worthy. You cannot choose judges – or Cabinet members – without knowing your own principles. Because Trump has none, he might as well throw darts at a board – or more likely, pick cronies because they are “terrific people” (i.e., loyal to him).

Third, the identity of those who crafted the list is unknown – and that is a problem. Who are really choosing the judges for Trump, and why don’t we know who they are? Because Trump is so ignorant on so many fronts, he in essence becomes a prisoner to advisers. Those advisers may

or may not have conflicts of interest, biases of their own and questionable backgrounds.

They may be experienced in judge-selection or may have made horrible goofs in the past. If any of them favorably comment on the list without revealing they contributed to it, that is another sign this is a thinly disguised sham. (And if any of them are practitioners, think-tankers or in other capacities that might be affected by their dabbling in presidential politics, that is a problem as well.)

Fourth, whoever came up with the list forgot to check Twitter. It turns out: “One of the judges on the list, Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Willett, is also a prolific tweeter. Many of his tweets about Trump over the past year can be described as mocking at best, while others are clearly denunciatory. Trump University, a sore spot for the Trump campaign, appears to be a common target.”

Fifth, it reminds us you cannot run the presidency by autopilot or simply by consulting with aides. What if a judge who might be better comes along – how would Trump even know? What

if new information comes out about one of the judges, or his views change?

Trump would still have his little list, but it would be of minimal use.

Sixth, it is a useless exercise. Those who have drunk the Trump Kool-Aid were already willing to trust a man who has proved to be habitually untrustworthy. Those who have figured out he is unfit to be president won’t be impressed with this stunt. And the vast majority of voters who have no idea who any of the judges are don’t care.

If Trump wanted to learn about issues, get himself up to speed on conservative ideas and prepare himself to be president, he would have done so long ago. He is now trying to fake his way through the process, betting the press and voters are too lazy or dumb to realize he is dangerously ill-equipped for the presidency.

It would be a shame if he is proved right.

In August 1968, just weeks after Bobby Kennedy was killed, my father and I took a walk through the fields of my great-grandmother’s house and plotted my career.

We didn’t know that at the time. I was only 11. He was 31, a father of four, who already had worked for more than a decade at the local power plant. Those few facts about him make me shake my head at how young he was, how overwhelmed he must have felt so much of the time.

My beloved grandma BeBout’s farmhouse was a half-hour and a world away from our home in small-town Ashtabula, Ohio. I was supposed to spend just two weeks with her, which is why Dad was there. Minutes after his arrival, our collective tears persuaded him to let me stay longer.

For the first time, it occurred to me that my father was capable of missing me. He wasn’t in a hurry to leave, and he asked whether I wanted to go for a walk. We trudged through the cornfield and kept going, Dad jingling the coins in his pants pocket with one hand as we strolled.

I had just finished reading a paperback about Bobby Kennedy’s life. It was one of those quick-press editions sold down the street at a newsstand

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court of Immaculate Conception 996 again participated in the organization’s National Education Contest.

Students from St. Mary School in DeKalb and St. Mary’s School in Sycamore, along with three students from the DeKalb religious education program, entered the contest.

The themes for 2016 were “We are Stewards of God’s Creation” and “How Do We Care for the Environment?”

Participants competed for awards in five categories at three division levels. A total of 191 entries were received among the categories of art, essay, poetry, computer art and photography. The winners are:

The contest was judged by a panel of volunteers, including six current or retired teachers. They are Stephany Breed, Penny Rosenow, Jeff Gale, Mark Barwegen, Kevin Beverley and Rob Tiggelaar. Barbara Baie, a professional photographer and owner of Womack Photography, judged the photography entries.

The Beth Fowler School of Dance Performing Group recently competed in the Rainbow National Dance Competition in Milwaukee, which included 381 teams.

Trinity Lutheran Church to host fundraiser

The members of Trinity Lutheran Church, 303 S. Seventh St. in DeKalb, will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser and silent auction from 4:30 to 7 p.m. June 1, at the church.

A $10 donation will be taken.

Entertainment will be provided by DeKalb High School’s EnHarmonic Fusion at 5:30 p.m. Several baskets will be available for bidding that evening.

The fundraiser is to support church member Karen Podeszek, who is suffering from Moyamoya, a rare and aggressive cerebrovascular disease.

Benefit dinner planned at DeKalb VFW

A benefit dinner for Earnest Cagle will be from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 11 at VFW Post 2287, 421 Oak St. in DeKalb.

Cagle was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer that has traveled to his lymph nodes. He was born in 1939 and served the country from 1956 to 1964 and was also active in the National Guard. He has three children, 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

The family is seeking donations of silent auction and raffle items for the event.

Immanuel Lutheran Church in DeKalb will begin its summer worship schedule on May 29.

A combined worship service will be at 9 a.m. each Sunday, with adult Bible study offered at 10:15 a.m.

The last day for Sunday School will be Sunday.

All those who have served as part of the Sunday School staff during the 2015-16 school year will be recoznized this Sunday at both services. The staff members are asked be present at the end of the first service and beginning of the second service.

“America’s Gift to the World: Jazz and Dance” will be the subject of Just Make It Happen’s Artist in Residence music education program Monday at Clinton Rosette Middle School, 650 N. First St. in DeKalb.

Thanks to CRMS Principal Tim Vincent, the programs will be open to the public 15 minutes before the 7:45 a.m., 8:30 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. workshops. A photo ID is required.

Guest performers will be ballroom dancers Ken and Dorothy Stroud of Beloit, Wisconsin; John Smith and Shananigans Big Band; and vocalists Nancy Killeen and Denny Vaupel of the Shananigan Glee Club.

The Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation is sponsoring the three music education programs scheduled in the main gym.

Students will have a opportunity to learn and experience the classic big band jazz sounds motivating ballroom dancers to swing, rumba, cha cha, salsa, tango, foxtrot and waltz dance.

The program will feature selections from “The American Songbook,” “N’Awlins Jazz” and recent hits such as Donald Fagen’s “Walkin Between Raindrops,” Barry Manilow’s “Singing with the Big Bands,” Brian Setzer’s “You’re the Boss” and Santana’s “Smoothe.”

DeKalb’s Tate determined to qualifying for state again

eKalb sprinter and jumper Tony Tate isn’t worried about seed times and heat sheets at the Class 3A DeKalb Sectional boys track and field meet today.

Instead, he’s just focusing on getting to the state meet again.

“I never look at seeds and those predetermined things – heat sheets, whatever they are,” Tate said. “I never look at that stuff because nobody is guaranteed to run what they run on paper. Only

thing that matters is what they do that day.”

To make the state meet, Tate and the rest of the area athletes will need to finish in the top two or hit qualifying marks in their respective sectionals today.

The Barbs host their 16-team 3A sectional, while Sycamore, Genoa-Kingston and Kaneland are headed to the 14-team Class 2A Galena Sectional at River Ridge High School. In Class 1A, Hiawatha and Hinckley-Big Rock are participating in the 20-team Oregon Sectional, and Indian Creek goes to the 18-team Manlius Bureau Valley Sectional.

With Tate having another impressive season, he already has hit the qualifying marks this season in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the long jump.

In fact, during the rain-soaked Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet last week, he hit them in the 200 (21.6 seconds) and the long jump (22 feet, 31/2 inches) – with 22.3 and 22-1 being the respective qualifying marks.

The speedy Tate is eyeing another trip to the 3A state meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, which is on May 27 and 28. At the state meet last year, he was disqualified in the long jump.

“It’s a confidence-builder that you’ve already done it – it’s just another day at the office,” Piccony said of Grant, who narrowly missed a trip to the state meet last season. “He needs to do it again, but he knows that he can do it.”

Even if the athletes had hit the qualifying mark during the season, it would be for naught if they don’t reach it or finish in the top two at the sectional meets. It’s a fact that adds a weight to the day, DeKalb coach Tim Holt said.

“You just have to do it Friday night,” he said. “There’s a little more pressure come Friday night because of what the outcome is – either you go or you don’t go. What helps is that you’ve cleared that height or time and don’t be nervous. Just be cool about it.”

The throw got away, allowing Myers to score. Simpson later scored on an error in the inning, but Hiawatha coach Sean Donnelly appealed that Simpson didn’t touch home, and the umpire disallowed what would have been the seventh run for Indian Creek.

allowed three earned runs in the complete-game loss. But he added he was glad to see his team bounce back after 16-6 and 18-3 run-rule losses to the Timberwolves last week.

“I thought our kids played with a lot of pride,” Donnelly said. “If you look at our first two games against Indian Creek, things did not go well at all. It would have been easy for them to come our here, crawl in a shell and say we’ll go home in five like we did the other two games. The fact they came out here ready to go in the first inning, put up some runs, get a lead, I was really proud to see that. They battled the whole way.”

Guerra allowed nine hits in the win and walked five. Three of the four runs he gave up were in the first inning.

The Timberwolves answered in their half of the the first when Sommerfeld reached on an error and scored on a single by Kevin Drendel.

“Trevor’s a strong kid, and I had no doubt he would be fine,” Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz said. “The team, too, knows it’s a seven-inning game. I thought it was important we got one back in the bottom of the first to slow the momentum down a little bit.”

Branden Watson led off the game with a double to left field for Hiawatha (7-13), than Elliott Mains singled him over to third. Adam Spear grounded out to score Watson, then after Guerra

got a strikeout, Hall sent a shot over the fence in left, which borders a private house’s backyard.

“Bart has been able to get big hits for us, and him being able to do that in this moment, strike early in the first inning, really helped everyone’s confidence, not just his,” Donnelly said. “It woke us up, and said, ‘Look at what we can do.’”

Hiawatha had two on and one out in the fourth, but Guerra recorded two strikeouts to end the inning. The Hawks loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth – an inning that started with Mlodzianowski doubling but getting caught in a rundown for the first out – but Guerra induced a groundout to end the rally.

Guerra struck out the side in the seventh, but he allowed Spear to get his second hit of the game. Watson and Mlodzianowski had two hits each for Hiawatha.

“You can get rattled sometimes when a team jumps on you like they did,” Piekarz said. “Trevor did a nice job, made some adjustments. ... Then we started hitting the ball hard and doing some things, and we did just enough to get a win.”

Indian Creek was outhit, 9-7, by the Hawks, and four of those Timberwolves hits came in the three-run third. Sommerfeld and Myers each had two hits for Indian Creek.

Another test awaits Cubs in San Francisco

Cubs no match for Guerra in loss to the Brewers MILWAUKEE (AP) – After losing two of three, the Cubs still have the best record in the majors and no panic.

Junior Guerra struck out a career-high 11, Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Chris Carter homered and the Milwaukee Brewers slowed the Cubs with a 5-3 victory Thursday.

“Their guy today, Guerra, pitched really, really well,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “They had a bunch of punchouts. We hadn’t been swinging and missing like that in bit. So, you got to give them credit. He had a really good splitter going on.”

The Cubs, a big-league best 28-11, have lost three times in a four-game span for the first time this season. The Cubs scored seven runs in the three-game series.

“They hurt us on defense and they hurt us on the mound,” Maddon said.

MILWAUKEE – The Cubs’ offseason of championship predictions and a spring of mirth and mimes inspired sarcasm among some rivals even before their 17 postgame celebrations the first month of the season.

One joke making the rounds in National League clubhouses last month went like this: “Did you go to Arizona for spring training? Were you there when the Cubs got their World Series rings?”

That’s the price of embracing a target that only gets bigger with every Jake Arrieta no-hitter, every series sweep against the Pirates or Nationals, and every mariachi band that plays “Tequila” in the clubhouse on Cinco de Mayo.

So far the Cubs are backing it up – series losses to the woeful Padres last

week and mediocre Brewers this week notwithstanding.

Even after Thursday’s 5-3 loss to the Brewers at Miller Park, they have the best record in baseball. And they’re 11-2 against the top three teams they’ve faced this year as they head to San Francisco to add a fourth to that list – in a series that provides another litmus test, this one with a twist.

This one is about the presumptive champs vs. actual champs.

The feel-good, would-be curse busters against the edgy, tested winners of the 2010, 2012 and 2014 World Series.

“You have respect for them because of what they’ve done in the past,” said Anthony Rizzo, whose Cubs leapfrogged the Giants into playoff position last August with a four-game sweep at Wrigley Field. “And what they’re trying to do this year is exactly what we’re trying to do.”

Anyone who doesn’t believe the Cubs

are on the NL West-leading Giants’ radar this season didn’t see the look in the Giants’ Madison Bumgarner’s face when he explained to media what led to the verbal altercation with Cubs right-fielder Jason Heyward over perceived sign stealing – in a spring training game less than two months ago.

“They always play with a chip on their shoulder,” Cubs catcher Miguel Montero said. “Nothing wrong with that. They play everybody hard. They play to win, just like we do. It’s going to be a really good series.”

The Cubs will miss ex-teammate Jeff Samardzija, who pitched Thursday night as the Giants tried to extend their winning streak to eight games.

But Bumgarner, the Giants’ ace, pitches Sunday’s series finale on national TV. And Jake Arrieta, the league’s ERA leader with more no-hitters (two) than losses (one) in his last 28 starts, opens the series for the Cubs on Friday.

LANARK – With a run already across in the top of the first, Bart Hall put an exclamation mark on a Hiawatha rally, belting a two-run home run and leaving Indian Creek and starting pitcher Trevor Guerra in a three-run hole before the Timberwolves came to the plate.

Sale tosses 4-hitter, improves to 9-0

CHICAGO – White Sox ace Chris Sale is on a historic roll, but that’s not the scary news for opponents.

Sale and manager Robin Ventura believe they haven’t seen the best of the lefty just yet.

Sale went the distance on a four-hitter Thursday night, becoming the first major leaguer since 2008 to win his first nine starts, and the Sox edged the Houston Astros, 2-1, to snap their season-high four-game losing streak.

Sale joined the New York Giants’ Sal Maglie (1952) as the only pitchers to

win their first nine starts with sub-2.00 ERAs in major league history. His 1.58 ERA ranks second to teammate Jose Quintana (1.54) in the American League.

“I just see him continuing to get better as the season goes along, as he goes through his career,” Ventura said.

“He’s confident. He’s doing a lot of different things that he hasn’t Chris Sale done in the past as far as just adding a little bit (to his pitches), taking a little off in the heat of the moment.”

Sale walked none and struck out a season-high nine en route to his sec-

ond straight complete game. No other pitcher has more than seven victories in the big leagues this season.

“Just keep doing more of the same,” Sale said of the next step. “You got to stay on it, what you’ve done, where you’ve been, just try to better yourself.

Any athlete that respects the game will tell you that.”

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ Brandon Webb had been the last to post a 9-0 record in his first nine starts. The last Sox to accomplish the feat was Eddie Cicotte in 1919, when he won 12 in a row.

“9-0 is cool,” Sale said. “I enjoy it.

I enjoy snapping the skid we were in even moreso than that.”

Sale finished his 107-pitch masterpiece with a flourish. He caught Tyler White looking for the 1,073rd strikeout of his career, which moved him into a tie with Ted Lyons for eighth in team history.

Callaghan helps Valpo into NCAA softball tourney

The Valparaiso softball team had a furious four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning that sent the Horizon League championship game into extra inning. A walk-off double an inning later clinched the Crusaders’ automatic berth in the NCAA tournament with a 5-4, eighth-inning win against Wright State on Saturday at Flames Field on the campus of the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Valpo trailed, 4-0, heading into the seventh inning, but Callaghan, a Kaneland grad, got the scoring started with an RBI single. Callaghan was 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI for the Crusaders.

The sophomore left fielder and Valpo play at 6 p.m. today (on Big Ten Network) against No. 2 Michigan in Ann Arbor. Michigan, and Saturday against Notre Dame in the double-elimination opening round, four-team regional that also includes Miami (Ohio).

Vinz led Kish with a .435 batting average with 69 RBIs, 16 doubles, three triples and five homers. Johnson had a .381 average with 43 RBIs, 16 doubles, two triples and five home runs.

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois baseball team rallied twice to beat Ball State, winning the first game of the three-game series, 14-8, Thursday at Ralph McKinzie Field.

Huskies starting pitcher Will Anderson retired the first three Ball State batters he faced. The Huskies (23-29) then gave him an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

Anderson found himself in some trouble after allowing the Cardinals (31-23) five runs in the top of the second inning.

Anderson recovered after the inning and allowed three runs in the next 22/3 innings before being replaced by relief pitcher Aaron Rumfield with two outs in the fifth. Anderson explained how he kept his composure after giving up the early lead.

“I just had to keep calm and tell myself that it was no big deal,” Anderson said. “We, obviously, have one of the best offenses in the conference, if not the best, so even if I do have a bad inning and my relief pitcher is warming up, I know that my offense will pick me up. I can give up five runs and I know they can put up six and that really helps keep me calm.”

Salmon is good source of healthy fat Dear Dr. K: You’ve written fatty fish such as salmon are a good source of omega-3 fats. Does it matter whether the salmon is farmed or wild?

Dear Reader: Salmon and other fatty fish certainly are an excellent dietary source of omega-3 fatty acids, which lower the risk of heart disease. Many supermarkets offer both farmed and wild-caught salmon. The two types have noticeably different tastes and textures. Wild-caught also tends to be more expensive.

But is there a difference in the amount of omega-3 fats they contain? It turns out both types provide similar amounts of omega-3s per serving, although there is more variability among salmon raised in one farm compared with another farm.

I spoke to Dr. Bruce Bistrian, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

He noted in the wild, salmon eat smaller fish that are high in EPA and DHA – the beneficial, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.

Farm-raised salmon eat high-protein food pellets. In particular, farmers often feed young salmon pellets made from plant and animal sources. They then add the more expensive fish- and fish-oil-enriched pellets later in the salmon’s lifespan.

A 2014 study measured fatty acids in 76 different fish species from six regions of the United States. They found big variations in the omega-3 content in the five different salmon species tested – especially the two farm-raised varieties. The omega-3 content ranged from 717 milligrams (mg) to 1,533 mg per 100 grams of fish (equal to a standard 3.5-ounce serving).

Compared with wild-caught varieties, farmed fish tended to have higher levels of saturated fats – “bad” fats. That’s one reason to prefer wild-caught salmon to farmed salmon, but it’s not a reason to

Bottom line: I wouldn’t base a choice of farmed salmon versus wild salmon on the nutritional content. Instead, let affordability, availability and taste guide your choices. What’s more important is to follow the American Heart Association’s advice to eat two servings of fish a week.

Salmon isn’t the only good source of omega-3s. Other good fatty fish choices include herring, bluefish, tuna and mackerel.

Sardines, swordfish and mussels also are rich in omega-3s.

Finally, be sure to keep the big picture in mind when choosing what to eat. The healthiest eating patterns include fish as well as lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and olive oil, with minimal amounts of meat and dairy. Studies involving hundreds of thousands of people find folks who regularly eat these foods have lower rates of heart disease and sudden death.

With all of my adult patients, I recommend one or two meals of fish a week. I particularly urge my patients who have heart disease already, or who have many risk factors for heart disease, to follow this advice. When these people just don’t like to eat fish, I recommend taking fish oil supplements, although the evidence of benefit from supplements is less clear than from eating fish.

a senior (girl) in high school and have been dating a sophomore even though he’s less than a year younger than I am. (I’m very young for my grade.) We have a lot in common, and I think we both love each other a lot.

Next fall, I’m planning on going to a local community college, but I won’t be too far away. West should count up the highcard points. He has 12, and dummy has 16. That leaves only 12, yet South opened the bidding. East’s job is to avoid reneging.

To beat the contract, the defenders, with no more side-suit winners available, need two trump tricks.

Which card must West hope that his partner holds?

West should lead a third diamond, take the first round of trumps, and play a fourth diamond, hoping his partner can ruff with the heart nine.

This effects an uppercut, gaining a trick for West’s heart 10. Keep counting those points.
